The importance of tyres THE importance of tyres – they’re not just black and round. New research has found more than 10 million tyres used by British motorists could be past their safe lifespan. The study discovered that 59 per cent of those surveyed didn’t know their tyre displayed information about its age, with many being used after their recommended limit had been exceeded. In total only 17 per cent of UK motorists and car insurance policy holders could accurately assess how old their car’s tyres were. Roger Griggs, communications director at Kwik Fit, has spoken about the dangers of old tyres, saying: ‘We would recommend drivers consider changing a tyre that’s more than five years old, even if it’s not down to the legal tread limit. ‘At a glance it may well look like the tread is in top condition, but the structure of the tyre may have decayed over time – check for tell-tale signs of cracking on the sidewall. And we would remind drivers to include the spare, which sometimes lays forgotten

and unchecked. If drivers have a puncture, a perished spare will obviously be of no help at all.’ Wheel Alignment

e g a p t e p s ’ t e v e h t l u Pa MA VETMB PHD MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM

l in both small animal and large anima Has more than 30 years’ experience of Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd veterinary practice and is a director

We always have a regular stream of people bringing their pets in for nail clipping. Sometimes the owner has tried to do this at home and it has gone wrong – too much of the nail has been clipped back and there is bleeding – so the owner then hurries to the practice justifiably worried and full of remorse. I hope to explain below how to do it properly to try to avoid any problems. If you are in the slightest bit worried about doing it or not sure if nails need clipping go to your vets and ask to see a nurse, as they will happily let you know if they need clipping and show you how to do it. Most cats and dogs do not like having their claws trimmed. Start trimming claws in young animals so that they get used to the process. Some cats and dogs will sit contentedly in your lap or on a table while you trim their claws, but others may be less happy about things and need some form of restraint. If your pet has his / her own views about whether or not their nails are going to be trimmed, you are probably better off going to see your veterinary nurse – but please tell them that ‘attitude’ might be a problem…. One method to restrain the pet is to place her / him on a table. Stand on the side of the table opposite to the claws you are trimming. Drape your arms and upper body over the dog. When trimming the front claws, keep your left forearm over the neck to keep the dog from lifting its head. Hold the paw in your left hand and hold the trimmer in your right hand. If the dog tries to stand, lean your upper body over their shoulders to prevent them from rising. If your pet is too wriggly, try laying them on their side. Use your right arm and upper body to keep the dog on their side. Hold the trimmer

in your right hand. Use your left arm to keep the head on the table and use the left hand to hold the paw. Like most things in life this is easier to do if you have a helper!

Although the dew claw seems to be flat to the side of the paw, it can usually be bent away from the leg so that you can fit a guillotine type trimmer over the tip of the nail. The guillotine type trimmers have stationary ring through which the nail is placed, and a cutting blade that moves up to slice off the nail when the handles of the trimmer are squeezed.

There are several styles of nail trimmers, including a guillotine type, a standard human fingernail clipper or scissors type. The guillotine type is the easiest to use in dogs, though either the guillotine type or a human fingernail clipper are easiest to use in cats. The scissors-type is used if a nail has grown so long that it’s sticking into the toe-pad.This most often happens to dew claws, which are the claws on the inner side of the paw. Dew claws do not touch the ground so they are not worn down as the dog walks. Cats have a dew claw on the inner side of each foot too, so you may need to trim these as they are not worn down when the cat scratches, and they also can grow in a circle, growing into the pad and causing problems.

Unlike cats, dogs do not have retractile claws. The colour of the nail is determined by the colour of the surrounding skin and hair. As you can see from the photo below, this dog has black claws on the brown paw and a mixture of white and black claws on the white paw.

Cats have retractile claws so you need to gently squeeze the toe between thumb and forefinger to expose the claw.

Light coloured claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see.You want to cut the claw to within approximately 2 mm of the quick, if you cut the quick your pet will bleed and feel pain – and may in turn make sure that you bleed and feel pain too!

The tip of the nail is placed in the stationary ring in the trimmer with the clipper perpendicular to the nail (cutting top to bottom). If the trimmer is placed parallel to the nail (cutting from side to side), the nail is crushed and may splinter. This same principle applies if you are using human style nail clippers on your cat The cutting blade should be facing you, NOT your pet.The screws on the handle of the trimmer should be facing your pet. If you turn the trimmer around with the screws toward you, the cutting blade is cutting closer to the quick than if the trimmer is held with the cutting blade toward you.You are less

www.falmouthwave.co.uk likely to cut into the quick if the cutting blade faces you.

TO ADVERTISE CALL ASHLEY ON 07800986216 You cannot see the quick on dark coloured claws, making them more difficult to trim without cutting into the quick. Therefore it pays to trim dark coloured claws with several shallow cuts to reduce the chance of cutting into the quick. As you cut off small pieces of the nail, look at the cut edge of the nail. The light tissue (1) is the curved bottom part of the nail.

FALMOUTH

The mottled light and dark tissue (2) is the top part of the nail. As you cut the nail deeper, you will see a homogeneous gray to pink oval (3) starting to appear at the top of the cut surface of the nail. Stop cutting the nail at this point as additional cutting will cut into the quick. The sharper the trimmer, the cleaner the cut. You can file the end of the nail to smooth the cut surface, but in

|15

most cases it’s wiser to quit while you’re ahead! If the claw is cut too short, you can use a styptic pencil containing silver nitrate to stop blood flow, although many animals object to this just as much, or more, than claw cutting, because it stings slightly. Even without any treatment the nail should stop bleeding in about 5 minutes or less; if it goes on longer than this then go to your vet straight away. Many thanks to Washington State University for the use of the photographs.

Happily loved up with musician Alex - hey, they're tying the knot soon! - and with her work life going INCREDIBLY well, it seems as if Angela's life is running pretty smoothly indeed.Well, that is until her irate mother (parents HATE it when they find out about your upcoming nuptials during an eavesdropping sesh in the local supermarket) summons her back home to England. Cue rain, bad memories, an ex boyfriend worth running away from, terrifying newborn babies, sparring friends and, yes, a hastily planned garden wedding. Can Angela overcome the wedding planning dramas and get her fashionable self down the aisle? It's just as funny, just as entertaining and just as perfect for the beach as the rest of the books in the Lindsey Kelk series - just don't blame us if you find yourself too wrapped up in Angela's life to ever step outside the hotel room...

I SUCK AT GIRLS by Justin Halpern

What could be better than sunning yourself on the beach while getting the inside scoop on what men think about dating? Meet Justin Halpern, twitter legend and author of the bestselling 'Sh*t my Dad Says,' book. This book spans his entire life, detailing all of his (cringeworthy) encounters with girls along the way and, yes, his hilarious Dad is there to chime in with advice along the way. So if you've ever wondered why little boys bully the little girls they secretly love, what they REALLY think about asking you out on a date and, yes, what makes a man decide he's going to pop the Big Question, then THIS is the book for you. It documents two decades of his sometimes hapless, sometimes sweet, and always CRINGE love life.

GOLD by Chris Cleave

Fancy something wildly different for this summer's holiday read? Then you need to go Gold and try out Chris Cleave's latest novel. This book is pretty topical, with the main focus being an Olympic Cycling Race - cue two wildly different female rivals, Zoe and Kate, on a quest to win that coveted (you guessed it!) gold medal. Think Fast Girls.Think Wimbledon.Think Bend It Like A Beckham. There's just something about sports that allows for such incredible d-r-a-m-a. Bitter rivalries, emotions bubbling on the surface, plenty of life lessons and a good old dose of that, "it's not about the winning, it's the taking

part" stuff. Perfect for reading on an airplane, on a sun-soaked beach or on the balcony, after a long hard day working that bikini body.

FIRST CATCH A HUSBAND by Sarah Bridge

Good news, your dating woes are set to pale into insignificants when you check out this fab ‘bitta chick lit’. Meet Sarah Bridge. She's smart, successful... and single. As a journalist, she has a hectic day job, a busy social life and is perfectly happy with both. But something - or someone - is missing. Cue a quest to find a soulmate which takes Sarah from self-help books and fortune-telling to climbing mountains in Morocco and swimming at midnight in the Caribbean - but will she ever meet Mr Right? Perfect beach reading, this inspiring dating story is perfect for everyone who's ever been (or wanted to be) in love, anyone who's ever wondered why British men are so TERRIBLE at approaching women they don't know and anyone who's ever spent hours wondering why that cute guy never called her. Sarah's been there, done that and, yes, written the actual book. Bring on the hilarity...

INVISIBLE by James Paterson

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire. Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, field agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected. That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day--and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes? James Patterson is the man responsible for more missed tube stations than any other author, he is the master at keeping his audience enraptured. Open and prepare not to eat, talk, or sleep until you hit the last page. INVISIBLE is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

FLASHBOYS: CRACKING THE MONEY CODE by Michael Lewis

By and large if there’s one book that every man should have read by the end of August it’s this one. Lewis’s investigation into the way in which high frequency traders, or HFTs, rigged the American financial system by covertly shaving nanoseconds off trades (and then gaining hundreds of millions of dollars in the process) is a tale of our age that not only will be told many times over, but may very well shape the future of Wall Street itself.

newton’s news

Better transport links means better social and working lives for all of us.

Ensuring that Cornwall gets at least it's fair share of funding for transport improvements remains a high priority for me. I have been working hard on improving the road links we rely on and helped secure significant investment in the major roads serving the Duchy - dualling the remaining parts of the A303 and the A30 at the infamous Temple bottleneck and between Carland Cross and Chiverton. While there is short term disruption, I am pleased that road improvements at Union Corner and Treluswell are moving forward. Cornwall Council has been allocated £4.3 million of extra funding for fixing potholes and I have a handy app on my website to help you report potholes. http://www.sarahnewton.org.uk/campaigns/sarah-newtonstreet-repairs-api Some communities in Falmouth & Penryn have been badly affected by changes to bus services in recent months. Cornwall Council is responsible for maintaining bus routes and has special funding to do this – I want to see this funding maintained and effectively used to ensure that our bus network meets the needs of its users. I am currently helping Cornwall Council on an innovative pilot in Falmouth using Regional Growth funding to improve local bus services and link them with our rail, ferry services, cycle and footpaths.

Argal Reservoir Water Park, Mabe, Near Falmouth

The Maritime line linking Falmouth to Truro continues to be a much used service - the fastest growing branch line in England - with plans for free wifi and better connectivity to the Great Western mainline that is currently seeing a £7 billion investment. I am determined to ensure that the pledged improvements for new trains, carriages, more frequent and reliable services are actually delivered. The most modern of all connections, the internet makes a real difference to people’s lives. I am closely monitoring the roll out of Superfast broadband that has reached a milestone of connecting 95% of Cornish properties. I want to get as close to 100% connectivity by 2020 as possible. In addition, the Government has reached a deal with the four mobile networks to improve coverage across Cornwall. A binding agreement has been reached with EE, O2, Three and Vodafone to tackle poor signal issues in so-called partial not-spots. My summer survey aims to find these "not spots" and those homes and businesses that want Superfast broadband so please do get in touch.

GAMES REVIEW Suggestions by Stan and written by Kristian Greet Batman: Arkham Knight – PS4, XB1

The final part in Rocksteady’s epic Arkham trilogy finally arrives. For the first time players will be able to explore a fully rendered Gotham City and drive the famous Batmobile. The game follows Batman as he confronts the Scarecrow, who has launched an attack on Gotham City, causing a citywide evacuation. Aided by the mysterious Arkham Knight, an original character created for the game, the Scarecrow unites Batman's greatest foes in a plot to finally kill the Dark Knight. The new dual play feature allows you to seamlessly switch control between his allies such as Robin and Nightwing. There are also significant upgrades to Batman’s gadget arsenal. DLC for the game will actually give you control over characters as Harley Quinn and for the first time Batgirl in a prequel to Arkham series. I have no doubt that this will be the game of 2015. Excitement meter 10/10

Lego Jurassic World – All Formats

To coincide with the films release, the ever expanding Lego games universe adds the Jurassic Park franchise to its line up. As with most of the Lego games, this is aimed for kids but its game that everyone can play young and old. It’s an enormous amount of fun. It’s also not limited to the new film, you can play levels and adventures from the first, second and third films. There is a tendency with the Lego games that they can get very repetitive but there are a certain amount of challenges to them with the prospect of different combinations with the building of vehicles.
