THIS TIME last year I wrote an article about damage limitation and added tips over the Christmas period to avoid the rapid weight gain, as we all love to enjoy fine dining and great festive food. Sadly I got slated for it! Some kindly soul began a campaign, which was targeted towards me. What was said was hurtful and from a stranger who had opinions on me, my shape and told me to drop the evangelical preaching over Christmas – people just want to relax, and not have diets rammed down their throats. So I thank that person as this year I am going to advise REST! Award wining Tattoo Artist

Comes to Falmouth! Meet Jason Ling

of Ship to Shore, an

award winning tattoo artist who has travelled the world to some of the biggest conventions as a guest artist and has experienced many different cultures and art forms. Originally from Portsmouth, Jason moved to Cornwall to be with his girlfriend after spending many years travelling to and from the county every weekend. With the original intention of working for somebody else as a guest artist, the opportunity arose for Jason to take over the studio in Church Street and the rest in history! The premises have been given a huge overhall and it now presents itself as a state of the art studio with a unique ‘retro boutique’ feel. The aim of the studio is to provide a friendly and professional environment for their customers. Jason can put his hand to any tattoo requested, and loves to take on the larger, bespoke work that comes into the studio. They offer a free consultation service and will work closely with you to ensure you get the tattoo you really want, never forgetting that while you may only spend a short time with them, your design is for life, so they will ensure you always get their best advice in every aspect of the process. As well as the very limited selection shown on this page, Jason has a whole portfolio of work available to view in the studio. When it comes to tattooing, you get what you pay for. Do not expect a good artist to come cheap, because if ‘cut price’ is the way that you go, you could end up spending a great deal more further down the line, when you have to pay for a large cover-up or laser tattoo removal. Save your money until you can afford what you really want! Don’t settle for something just because you are impatient to get some ink, the end result of your decision will be with you for a long time. Most of the laser removal performed is for just that reason, impulse tattoos! As from the beginning of

the New Year, Ship to Shore will be offering laser tattoo removal using the very latest state of the art equipment. Ship to Shore is beautifully presented and spotless! If a tattoo artist can’t keep their house in order, what other corners might they be cutting? You could potentially be putting your own health and wellbeing at risk.Ask yourself; if this was a dental surgery and not a tattoo studio, would I let them touch my teeth? Potentially there are a great deal of similarities between the two regarding the possibility of cross contamination of instruments and equipment, and the transmitting of blood-borne pathogens. The regulations in the tattooing industry are minimal at best, so it is very much up to the individual studio to police themselves past the very basic health and safety requirements. Because of this, the cleanliness of their studio very much reflects their attitude towards their customer and their customer’s wellbeing. You can find Ship to Shore at 58 Church street @shiptoshoretattoofalmouth Falmouth, or on

Party Season

Patient Comments I am thrilled with the result! You have given me my confidence back and I feel much better about myself

As we enter the month of December many of us will be turning our attention to the many social gatherings and parties we will attend this festive season. The excitement of meeting with family and friends everyone dressed in their finest clothes, eating the finest food and feeling special. Unfortunately however, there will be many people who will not join in the excitement of the party season those with no teeth or loose fitting dentures often feel too embarrassed to attend social gatherings. Research reveals that many of these people lack selfconfidence and avoid everyday activities such as eating out in public, being intimate and going out with family and friends. For those who do attend a dinner with friends the inability to chew their food properly often results in heartburn and indigestion which ruins their evening. Dentures are custom made to fit your mouth and should not need any fixative however over time the mouth changes shape and the dentures may become loose and not fit well.A poorly fitting denture can easily break or cause irritation and sores leading to considerable discomfort. Many people will not seek professional advice because of the stigma associated with dentures and the fear of having an oral examination even thoughThe British Dental Health foundation advises replacing lost or missing teeth is very good for your health and

appearance. Dentures replace your lost teeth and give support to your cheeks and lips.Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person appear older and they will find it difficult to eat and speak properly. A Free one hour consultation at the discreet private clinic with Martin Docking will give you the opportunity to consider your options with no obligation. The clinic set on the outskirts of St Agnes in a countryside location, has ample parking and we give a warm welcome and to all our visitors. The consultation is completely Free and Martins role is primarily to put your mind at ease and show you how a denture can be made to give you a natural looking appearance. If you decide to commence treatment with us Martin will carefully explain each stage of the pain free procedure. You will always be seen by Martin and he will create the denture that returns your confidence and smile. Call Changing Faces today and make 2015 a year to smile about. Finally I would like to wish all readers a wonderful Christmas and prosperous NewYear from all of us at Changing Faces Dentures Cornwall. By CLAIRE BLACKER

TMB PHD MRCVS PAUL COCKERHAM MA VE all animal and large animal

in both sm Has more than 30 years’ experienceof Rosemullion Veterinary Practice Ltd veterinary practice and is a director KENNEL COUGH This is one of these canine diseases (and be reassured it doesn’t affect cats) which is just what it says it is: it’s a bug – actually sometimes two bugs – which produce a cough in dogs, frequently when they’ve been in kennels. It’s most often caused by a bacteria called “Bordetella bronchiseptica”, but there’s often a virus involved as well, called “Parainfluenza-3”. Either by themselves, or together, these bugs invade the lining of a dog’s larynx (the voicebox) and windpipe, causing inflammation, so that when air passes over these sore areas it results in an irritating cough. How is kennel cough transmitted? Kennel cough is a highly contagious disease. It goes from one dog to another much the same way as a human cold transmits in humans – after all, coughing is a great way of spreading bugs into the air! – or it can go via direct contact of one dog with another, like sniffing noses and suchlike. So, it’s often spread in areas where many dogs are confined together, such as boarding kennels or animal shelters. Other ‘at risk’ situations are dog groomers and dog shows. One infected dog can soon infect many others even if it is not showing any symptoms of kennel cough at the time. That’s because the incubation period – which is the time the dog first gets the infection to the time that signs start showing, is typically between 7 to 10 days. Unfortunately that means that you can have an infected dog in kennels, at a show, in the groomers, without anyone knowing it, and so the bugs spread from one dog to another

with nobody any the wiser. What are the symptoms of Kennel Cough? Kennel Cough starts off as a very dry, hacking, coarse cough, with urging and gagging. It often sounds like your dog has got something caught in the back of his throat and he is trying to cough it up and many owners mistakenly think that their dog has a bone caught in his throat. The coughing can be quite violent, so they may also cough up white frothy material almost like a mild vomiting. All that said, they’re usually quite well (apart from the cough) with a normal temperature and they’re very keen for their daily routine – walks, running around and all the rest of it – and they very rarely stop eating! Labradors never stop eating, obviously, but even other breeds less dedicated to their guts don’t seem too badly affected. What’s always intrigued me is that the cough starts incredibly suddenly – middle of the night, halfway through the morning, whenever – and starts off as it means to go on. There’s no gradual build up to it like with other diseases, but it’s full on right from the start. The coughing can get worse on exercise and often goes on and on, day and night, which can become very distressing not only for your pet but also for you! What’s to do? If the cough is mild and your pet seemingly otherwise fine, then probably you don’t need to do anything immediately, but you can just see how the cough goes on. Uncomplicated cases of Kennel Cough often resolve without any treatment within 714 days. But it helps to remove

their collar and use a harness if you can, so there’s no pressure on the throat if they pull on the lead. Soft food usually goes down well, too. However, if the coughing is getting worse or your pet is struggling, then go and see your vet. They will probably prescribe an anti-inflammatory drug, as a cough suppressant, and may advise a course of antibiotics if the signs are severe. If left untreated sometimes these cases deteriorate into bronchopneumonia, and that’s no joke. Honey is also quite a good cough suppressant – particularly last thing at night, and most dogs love it! Should we vaccinate? There are two vaccines, one for each of the two bugs. The Parainfluenza virus is incorporated into the booster vaccination, but the Bordetella one is separate, and is given down the nose. Now this isn’t always the easiest of jobs, particularly with dogs who are old hands at the game as they think it’s the canine equivalent of waterboarding!

The reason for giving it down the nose is that the vaccine produces an immunity in lining of the dog’s nose, so it kicks the bug out before it’s got a chance

?

to start invading. So, if your dog is going into kennels, or mixes regularly with other dogs – such a dog-walking group, or goes to training / obedience / agility classes, or is a working dog – then yes, vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate! Especially in winter, as just like human colds, these bugs survive much better in wet weather! DRIED FRUIT I mentioned this in my last article as a cause of poisoning in dogs – but it’s well worthwhile mentioning again, because with Christmas approaching, and people busy making Christmas cakes / puds, then not only do these occasionally get snaffled by dogs, but often they steal the ingredients even before you start!

?d

The chief problem is from our point of view is that nobody knows how or why dried fruits causes toxic effects in dogs. Also, why one dog can eat an entire bag of raisins / bowl of mincemeat quite happily (albeit, after a while, with some undesirable effects at the other end), and another dog can do the same thing and die…. If in doubt ring your vet and get advice. Every practice has a 24/7 number –it’s there for a reason. INTHE MEANTIME, ON BEHALF OF ALL OF US AT ROSEMULLION VETS, LET ME WISH YOU AND YOUR PETS A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND A PEACEFUL NEW YEAR.

Dragon Age 3 - Taking the series back to its RPG beginnings, it’s a game that will give you hours of fun in the huge world created by Bioware. While its story leaves a lot to be desired, the games keeps you distracted from that with everything else. 9/10 Assassins Creed: Unity - Unity offers upgrades to the free running and amazing graphics. Small tweaks have been made to the combat but that’s about it. It’s a fun game and very good in parts but still leaves a lot to be desired. 8/10 Assassins Creed: Rogue - There is really nothing new in Rogue. It’s essentially Black Flag without the pirates. Playing on the Templar side does give you something different but not really enough to stand out from the previous game. 7/10 Far Cry 4 - It’s very pleasing on the eye but story is very disappointing. However the gameplay is so good it’s keeps you from noticing that. The side missions tend to be more fun and more rewarding than the actual main missions. Fans of the series will love the game. 9/10 Grand Theft Auto V - The best game of last year finally gets its next gen upgrade. Everything has been tweaked here from the amazing graphics to a new first person mode. The only downside is that if you played and finished the game last year. There is very little new to do with this one. 10/10 Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 - PES has been overshadowed in recent years by the more successful Fifa. But this year PES is back with a brand new rebuilt engine and it’s a massive success. If Fifa is Lionel Messi then PES is Cristiano Ronaldo. 8/10

Winter Motoring

CHECKLIST

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best

Two out of the last three winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly falling below -10°C. You’re more likely to break down in a bad winter – Emergency breakdown services had its busiest day on Monday, January 4, 2010, and then again, less than 12 months later, on Monday, December 20, 2010 when patrols handled more than 28,000 breakdowns. There’s more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. If vehicles ahead lose control – a jack-knifed lorry for example – you won’t be able to get through no matter how well-equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions.

Xpress Garage can check your car for you... Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Xpress offers a comprehensive computerised battery check with print out. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (wD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.
