PE RSONAL NOTES _ As a female, your period is something you learn to hide and your sexuality is something to be ashamed of. I remember growing up feeling embarrassed to buy pads from stores—I couldn’t even look at the cashier when they scanned them. Buying condoms was an even higher level of anxiety. Not only purchasing them, but making sure my parents didn’t find out. Why must we pretend that something so natural doesn’t happen? I created this brand to help younger females feel comfortable getting the necessities they needed to be safe and to normalize the conversation and perception around periods.

PE RSONAL NOTES _ Growing up, my love and obsession for the paranormal, cryptids, and the unknown flourished. Coming from a Hispanic background, the presence and stories terrified me and fueled my imagination. The legend of the chupacabra has always been one of my favorites because of the interpretation of it being dog-like. The design of this Piquin is a perfect reflection of me as a designer— merging the dark with the colorful, both in a visual and conceptual sense.

PE RSONAL NOTES _ I find it fascinating that the tiniest of adjustments change the entire feel and personality of a letterform. Sanskrit has been a recent obsession of mine—from the way it’s read to the way it’s written out. I knew that I wanted to create a project that incorporated and showcased the beauty I saw in it. A pocket square brand, with its various square folds, was the perfect opportunity. The way that the fabric curves over and folds reminded me of the flourishes and edge often seen in that type of script. The Zataari & Reed monogram represents the merging of two letterforms, two languages, and two cultures.

PERSONAL NOTE S _ As a child, I was obsessed with optical illusions. While designing the brand identity for Illusion, I realized there were strong similarities in the structures of the letterforms “ILL” and the “devil’s fork” illusion. The smooth transition of this classic illusion into the word itself hides this integration in plain sight, just as a magician does with their sleight of hand. The finished logo creates a visual tension and confusion that I felt perfectly mimicked the reaction I always feel when witnessing magic.
