MARK Magazine

We wish to explore, celebrate and above all highlight the importance of drawing among the students of Central Saint Martins. Across all different disciplines at the university, we have observed and documented the practice of drawing. Mark magazine contributes to showcasing the importance of this practice and how drawing is still extremely relevant for a contemporary generation of students. The art of drawing is a cerebral act that is cherished among many at Central Saint Martins. However Mark magazine underlines its substance in helping to create the new visionaries, from the touch of the hand.

Students bring portfolios which are absolutely shocking, and work which is synthetic, cosmetic.

There is not a sketch, there has not been a pencil in hand.

Ji Yeon Lee Fashion Design Print The reason why I do hand drawings is that my tutors are always keen on seeing my hand drawings rather than just printed images. There are many ways to show my ideas apart from hand drawings but hand drawing is quite important.

Henry Daggett Architecture I draw either because I have to, or because I want to. Drawing helps with my design process, and also to help me make any neccessary plans, for further development in the future.

Yoonyoung Kang Fashion Design Print I study Fashion Design Print at Central Saint Martins. I often developed my ideas using my drawings and I think it is an easier way to show my ideas than just speaking or writing. I think hand drawing is not an absolute way to show my ideas and to be honest, I prefer to draw by using tablets or different materials. But my tutors at college always want me to do hand drawings rather than digital drawings or something like collages. .

Cosmo Meynell Product Design I do Product design at CSM, and I use drawing to visulaise ideas and concepts in the early phases of my design process. I prefer to use a pen and paper during the earlier phases of working out product forms and problem solving. Drawing helps me to communicate concepts and basic outlines. It is very useful and essential to getting a general flavour of what you want to create.

Sang Eun Lee Fashion Design Print I am currently studying Fashion Design Print at Central Saint Martins. I often use my drawings to show my ideas without detailed explanation. I believe that drawing is an easier way for me to show other people.

Is life drawing still important?

After taking part in a class oursleves, we spoke to life drawing model at Central Saint Martins, Phil, about his experiences as both model and artist.

Do you draw? Yes, I do draw myself. I like drawing basically, its also interesting to find artists and to see what its like drawing me on the other side. Also the problems they face, like which position I should take up, finding different angles and action poses. So its useful from that point of view. Do you ever sketch to help you in your design process or is it more of just a passion for drawing? Err, its a passion for drawing. I draw in classes or I draw in pubs or sometimes on the tube. and if I find a person that is suitable to draw/sketch or whatever. How long has your experience as a life model been? Very long, yeah, its about 16 years that I have been posing for various people. Yeah I have been to all sorts of different places, large, small, individuals, so I have a wide experience. How do you feel the Saint Martins experience is?

In general I find it quite impersonal at Saint Martins, I come in and do the poses, take my breaks and I go basically, I don’t really have a connection with anyone, apart from the tutor of course. How long have you done it here? At St Martins? Uhh about 15 years. What do you think of life drawing now? Do you think it has become more popular? or is it decreasing slightly in students? It seems that in the larger art schools like St Martins it is decreasing all the time, but there seems to be a lot of meet-up life drawing groups developing, in lots of pubs and places like that, and are doing it in smaller art groups. Do you do any drawings yourself, aside from life drawing? I quite like drawing buildings occasionally, yeah thats about it really. Its because I like the architecture of buildings. And the life drawing helps with that to get your perspective. Fugitempor a cone velias aut lanteceptiis nit aboribus net entur aut pari tem?
