PARK CHAN-WOOK “The audience seems hazy to me, shrouded in a veil through which I can’t see.”
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY Park Chan-wook, a South Korean film director. He is considered as one of the greatest filmmakers in the Korean film industry. His work has been admired by many famous directors, including Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino even went on to cast his vote for Park’s popular movie, ‘Oldboy,’ helping it win the Grand Prix Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival. Park is known for embellishing world cinema with visually mesmerizing movies, such as ‘Joint Security Area,’ ‘Thirst,’ ‘Oldboy,’ ‘Lady Vengeance,’ etc. His movies often display violence as they usually deal with intense subject matter. Not surprisingly, he has been targeted by journalists and critics for producing violent movies that glorify vengeance, but Park reckons that as an artist, he has complete freedom when it comes to capturing the essence of an emotion. In spite of making movies that display excessive violence, Park is one of the most celebrated directors in Korea.

DESIGN BRIEF
To create a cohesive visual system, I use different thematic conceptual tools to help me construct guiding principles that serve as design decisions.
FESTIVAL NAME Black Desire Dirty aspiration is something hidden deep in people’s hearts, darkness is their carnival times
THE THREAD Written to summarize the style and overall vision of Park Chanwook’s films, it is the paramount part of the entire festival’s visual system, which is used to build the core concept.
In the shadow of the city, desires, sins, and anger are suppressed. Rationality and humanity are madly blooming. Men who are controlled by negative emotions attempt to use violence to break this cage. Men finally walk out of that cage and restored their original conscience and humanity while blood and sins stain their hands.

STORYLINE GRAPHIC
A graphical representation of all the ups and downs in park chan-wook’s films to understand his work more visually
PLOT GRAPHIC Considering that most of Park Chan-wook’s movies are narrated, story plots and plot reversals with the characters’ emotional ups and downs, and even use violence and blood to reflect the characters’ inner struggles and crazy sickness. Simultaneously, similar actions or recurring objects are used to express the relationship between the characters and the characters’ hearts and transitions. Therefore, as a whole, it can be said that the emotional ups and downs support and wrap the movie

WHO I am a police academy intern. This is the first day I joined the Behavioral Analysis Unit of NCAVC. WHERE I wandered on the street, watching the pedestrians in this city. WHAT I have just finished today’s crime scene survey with my senior, and it is the first time that I have come into contact with violence and blood in person. I suddenly realize that crime is not far from real life and how dark the sins suppressed in people’s hearts are once they are released.

SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE Urgently in need of the money to pay for his gravely ill sister’s kidney transplant, Ryu, a punky deaf-mute factory worker, resorts to kidnapping the daughter of a wealthy industrialist—an act of desperation which leads to a series of events that spiral into a bloody cycle of violence and revenge. Park Chan-wook began his famed “Vengeance Trilogy” with this wild, magnificently stylish thriller.

OLDBOY “Oldboy” tells of a drunken, abusive lout named Joe Doucette (Josh Brolin) who’s imprisoned for a long time by a mysterious jailer. He gets clean in prison, then escapes to learn the identity of his tormentor and punish him. Like Park’s version, this one’s a reptilian brain film, all violence and sex and fear and revenge and crying and screaming. The lighting is dark but the colors are supersaturated, especially in scenes with a lot of blood, neon, or wet pavement.

LADY VENGEANCE After being wrongfully convicted, a woman is imprisoned for 13 years and forced to give up her daughter. While in prison she gains the respect of her cellmates and plots her revenge on the man responsible. Once released, she begins her elaborate plan of retribution, but discovers a horrifying truth. Park Chan-wook ended his “Vengeance Trilogy” in style (and to great blockbuster success) with this characteristically twisted, baroque thriller, whose Lee Young-ae will forever haunt our dreams. A beautiful trip to the dark side, and the end of the series’ rocky road towards salvation.
