Here is another little extract from the book currently being written by Kettering based musician Dave Clemo. Dave’s book ‘Too Young for Rock & Roll’ will be published this autumn and will be available in Kindle and iTunes formats as well as in print.

By now it was now late 1967. I’d just started work, had some money and my interest in music was blossoming. One Sunday evening in October we drove up to the West End to the ‘Sundays at the Savile’ concert, with Andy and his girlfriend Pauline on one scooter, and my friend Dave and I on another. These were almost the first bands I’d seen playing live. I can still remember that first night when we went to see Pink Floyd at the Savile Theatre, and how the hairs on the back of my neck stood up as the curtains opened and the first band- Fairport Convention- launched into ‘Season of the Witch’. They’d been playing for less than six months and it was their first big gig. I have loved their music ever since. Singer Judy Dyble played her electric autoharp. After fifty years I’ve never seen another like it.

After Fairport we had Tomorrow, featuring a young Steve Howe (later with Yes) on guitar. Their singer Keith West had recently had a hit with ‘Excerpt from a teenage opera’ and they were far too poppy for my liking. Remember- this was the autumn of 1967 and we’d just experienced ‘the Summer of Love’, which mainly consisted of wearing kaftans, hanging miniature cowbells around our necks and sticking flowers in our hair. I liked Tim Rose who was a late addition to the bill. He was a great singer with a big gritty voice. He was

backed by Aynsley Dunbar’s Retaliation. Aynsley was the thrashiest drummer I’d ever seen! Head down, arms flailing, hitting his drums as hard as he could. Rumour has it that he lost out to Mitch Mitchell for the drummer’s job with The Experience on the flip of a coin. Rose was excellent. Hendrix had taken his song ‘Hey Joe’ and set the world alight a year earlier, and Rose sang that and followed it with his anti-war anthem ‘Morning Dew’. It’s a pity he got left behind in the rush. He eventually settled down and lived out his days in West London. The next act was The Incredible String Band. My friend Andy loved them from that moment on and bought all their albums. I saw them several times afterwards but they never appealed to me in the way that Fairport did. I don’t know what I expected when Pink Floyd took the stage. They were riding high in the charts with their second single ‘See Emily Play’ and I think I expected to hear that and more of the same. What I didn’t expect was to see four musicians hunched over their instruments in semi darkness with their coloured shadows projected onto a screen behind them. They played a series of instrumentals that would soon appear on their debut album ‘Piper at the Gates of Dawn’. I quite liked the sound of the Farfisa organ and the drummer’s double kit- but they bombed. This was my first experience of a light show. The audience, me included, were underwhelmed. No-one clapped. We'd never seen anything like it. To be fair, no-one had.

Author and Kettering based musician David Clemo.

Ayleys Comet was formed by 4 musicians from Northamptonshire in 1986 & were originally known as Roys Rockets; A local haulage company called Aileys Transport in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire took an interest in the band, sponsored us and we consequently became Aileys Comet. The original line up was Mick playing bass, Ian on drums, Robbie on guitar and Roy singing lead vocals. In the early days the guys were predominantly rock and roll. Unfortunately, as happens all too often, the band folded in its original format and everyone went their separate ways in the mid 80's; however our guitarist, Robbie, formed a new band with Ian the drummer and 2 others which lasted for approximately 8 years. Ayleys Comet reformed in late 1999 for a couple of fundraisers plus a Millenium gig, then after a while they decided it may be worth another go on the circuit, but this time without Roy as vocalist; the vocalist we recruited was Mel Peake who is now very well known as a solo artist in his own rite. A phone call from out of the blue gave the guys (but ony the original line up) a chance for their 5 minutes of fame on the pilot programme on BBC Television of Jon Culshaw's 'Dead Ringers' - formerly a radio show. The programme was a huge success and the sketch the lads appeared in is saved for posterity on a BBC DVD of the first series.........the band's name got mis-spelt though in a poster done for the sketch and they became Ayleys Comet with a 'Y' instead of an I. It was

decided to keep the name change and go back on the circuit on a regular basis which proved very successful. Many clubs were pleased to see Ayleys Comet back on the scene and continued to repeat book us. The band had always been a predominantly male line up but in a revamp in 2006 we took a chance on a young female vocalist called Hayley Blanchett who had been 2nd in a BBC Television competition called 'Junior Star for the Night'. Hayley, whose family are all in the music business in one way or another, changed the dynamics of the band and breathed new life in to it; when Hayley left us in late 2007 it was decided to keep a female vocalist in the line-up and we continued with a couple more female singers from thereon. The band merged with another in 2011 but Ayleys finished again on a high!! The last remaining founder member of the band is still with us - Robbie and for as long as he is here, Ayleys Comet will continue to be. Ayleys reformed in January 2017 with Robbie at the helm as lead guitarist following his battle with cancer. We have an awesome female vocalist called Vicki who brings her own style to the mix singing all styles from the 50's, 60's and 70's Country, Soul, Motown and Rock and Roll. We are taking bookings now so please feel free to contact us on 01536 391839 or 07715 448021. www.ayleyscomet.co.uk
