LEFT HAND DRIVE THE STORY OF A SEVENTIES BAND
16
Left Hand Drive was a band that Jack Swann and I started in 1974 with but one aim- to make some good music. We didn’t have any plans beyond that. We were utterly naïve about the business of music. We had no contacts within the industry, no management, and hadn’t the faintest idea how to get a recording contract. We played the music we liked, and amidst all the changing musical fashions of the times we were more often than not a band out of time, caught between the prog rock scene of the early seventies and the emerging punk rock bands of 1976.
Jack & I looked at the variety of music on offer and decided we could do as well, or even better. There was a thriving live music scene both nationwide and locally, with live music available almost every night of the week, and a thriving college and university circuit which was able to keep a host of rock bands in full time employment. Every town had a pub where the local musicians and music fans would congregate. Northampton’s was The Black Lion in St Giles Street. We started rehearsing during the summer of 1974 and played our first gig that August. I stayed with the band until the end of 1976. Jack stayed on as the band embraced the punk movement and continued until their final gig in 1978, after which he and John Brassett formed The Russians. Both Jack and I could play lead guitar and so we decided to make twin lead guitars a feature of our sound. By a strange coincidence Jack was also playing a left handed Fender Telecaster through an H&H combo, so we had matching guitars, matching amplifiers, matching attitudes and matching aspirations.

Black Lion. The room wasn’t that big and could hold about a hundred at a very tight squeeze. There was a bar in the corner opposite the stage, the floor was sticky from thousands of spilled pints and the toilets were in a lean to on the other side of the alleyway. But the atmosphere generated in that room was the best! There was a buzz about the band in those first few months. We’d passed the first test with flying colours. We had successfully put a band together in just a few weeks and we were rocking. At that time the ‘must play’ venue was the County Rock, held every Saturday in the indoor cricket school at the County Cricket Ground. We got ourselves a gig there on October 12th. I don’t remember much about the show, except that it was loud! The pictures show Jack and me with our new guitars and old H&H amps, Shaun is playing his Rickenbacker bass through a hundred watt amp and two speaker cabinets and Robin has his head down and is rocking. The gig must have gone down well because the Cricket Club Secretary Ken Turner booked us as support act for the biggest gig of the year, when Leo Sayer was to play to a capacity crowd at the venue. The date was November 23rd 1974. An exerpt from Kettering musician Dave Clemo’s book ‘To Old To Punk’ due out next year. You can follow Dave on Facebook.
It was indeed a match made in heaven. One of our songs had a passage that could be played in harmony and we soon worked out how to play it. From then we decided that our band would feature the twin lead guitar sound as pioneered by Wishbone Ash. After a few weeks we decided that it was time to look for a bass player and drummer. We advertised in the local paper and had a couple of replies. The first was from Robin Waugh. He was a drummer- and he was left handed! Jack was also left handed. The name of the band was a no-brainer. Left Hand Drive. Our first public show was on August 31st 1974. We were advertised as ‘Live from London’! We played a single set, with Mick Garlick’s Kew G disco topping and tailing.I loved playing the
Dave playing with Left Hand Drive at The County Rock October 12th 1974.
