nd what have you done?” as John Lennon asked in what has become one of those timeless seasonal classic songs. The end of the year is always a time for reflection on the events, good and bad, of the past 12 months. In my editorial for the December 2016 issue of GOLD, I noted that “We are already looking to 2017 with what the diplomats call ‘cautious optimism’. It could be the most momentous year in the country’s history if the January talks end in agreement and the people vote to accept and implement it. On the other hand, those of us who have been close observers of the Cyprus Problem over the past four decades have seen hopes dashed at the last minute on more than one occasion, so there is also a touch of fear of disappointment once more.” In the end, that fear of disappointment proved to be well-founded and we are about to start yet another year, still hoping that everyone involved in the process will make another effort to reunite the island. Much will depend on the results of next month’s presidential elections, as far as the chances of resuming talks are concerned and, in Cypriot politics, nothing can be taken for granted. As far as GOLD is concerned, 2017 has been another excellent year, in which we have published another dozen issues of the magazine – three of which were of 140 pages – all of them well-received. In June, we featured the first-ever cover story on the Turkish Cypriot economy, which brought much praise and positive comment from both sides of the divide, and we were happy to see that our special issues dedicated to the annual CIPA International Investment Awards (July) and to Maritime Cyprus 2017 (September) sold out fast. GOLD has always taken pride in being a platform for professionals, local and foreign, to express their views and opinions on a broad range of issues and this year was no exception. You will have read interviews with half of the Cabinet, with Cypriot CEOs and the heads of both private companies and public sector organisations as well as a plethora of big names/experts from abroad. Among them were Riley Newman, Panos Panay, John Botham, Michael van Gestel, Mark Yeandle, Nick Parker, JeanEric Paquet, Simon Osborne, Joseph Maltezos, Roger Bootle, Maneesh Juneja, Spiros Margaris, Paul Hodgkins and many more. John Vickers, I wish you all the very best for Christmas and the New Year. Whatever happens, we’ll be here to encourage debate, report on Chief Editor developments and give you a comprehensive picture of Cyprus john@imhbusiness.com in 2018. See you next year!
