Theme How Would I Change the World?

Course Materials A selection of books and personal opinion texts leveled for each student's abilities and covering a variety of topics to meet students' interests.

Course Overview Students examine a variety of selections of opinion writing. They learn about some of the key elements of the genre and apply these to their own writing. Students work on presenting their opinion with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. They learn new vocabulary in the texts covered and focus on using strong opinion language in their own writing. Week

Genre Debate and Persuasive Writing

Theme The Art of Persuasion

Course Materials A selection of classic persuasive essays and current journal articles leveled for each student's abilities and covering a variety of topics to meet students' interests.

Course Overview Each week students focus on a different rhetorical device or persuasive technique. They apply these skills in weekly writing assignments culminating in a final project where they will present an argument for or against a current issue. We will also cover the rules of formal debate and engage in weekly class debates on the topics covered. Week
