ABOUT THE SHOW

An annual tradition at Evergreen, welcome to QuiRING In The New Year! The Quiring Chamber Players (Reg Quiring & Rosemary O’Connor) and special guest musicians are here for a new Chamber Music concert to celebrate New Year’s Eve. This year, we are excited to welcome Principal oboist Joo Bin Yi and cellist Jonathan Lo from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and violinist Catherine French of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a magical evening of music. This concert includes gems of the chamber music repertoire like the phenomenal Mozart Oboe Quartet, selections from Bruch’s Eight Pieces for Oboe, Cello, and Piano, and the beautiful Schumann Piano Quartet.

MEET YOUR HOSTS

Host Reg Quiring has performed as principal violist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, Quebec Symphony and Vancouver Symphony. He often performs as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in concert and on CBC radio. As a chamber musician, Reg has performed in the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, Vancouver New Music Ensemble, Standing Wave Ensemble, Vetta Chamber Players, Turning Point Ensemble and Quiring Chamber Players. Reg and his wife, Rosemary O’Connor, are the Davidsbündler Duo and as such have recorded a CD of works for viola and piano and given concerts in many parts of British Columbia. He and his sister, Angela Goddard, founded and co-direct the Quiring Chamber Music Camp for young musicians, now in its 18th year. Reg has served on the music faculty at UBC and the Vancouver Academy of Music, and currently teaches at the Quiring Chamber Music School in Coquitlam. Reg studied violin with Lise Elson and viola with Donald McInnes at the University of Southern California, and studied viola at the University of British Columbia with Gerald Stanick. Reg is the Artistic Director of the Coquitlam Youth orchestra at Evergreen Cultural Centre.

Pianist Rosemary O’Connor is an avid chamber musician who collaborates regularly with members of the VSO and Opera orchestras and co-produces at the Evergreen Cultural Centre’s Chamber Music Series. In this capacity she has performed with guest artists such as Ian Swensen, Anita Krause, Dale Barlthrop , Francois Houle, Andy Dawes, Catherine French, and members of the St. Lawrence Quartet. Rosemary has performed solo and chamber music concerts in the US, Canada, and Europe. Other concerts include Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, Music at the Vinyards in Napa Valley, Pender Harbor, Chintimini Chamber Music Festival in Oregon, Sundays at 4 from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Rosemary currently teaches at the VSO School of Music and at her home studio in Coquitlam. For the past eight years she has been the Director of the Quiring Chamber Music Camp which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2019.

Joo Bin Yi, a native of South Korea, earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts as the Francis W. Hatch Presidential Scholar. He studied with John Ferrillo, Principal Oboe of the Boston Symphony, and Anne-Marie Gabriele, Second Oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He recently spent three years with the New World Symphony during which he recorded Aaron Copland’s “Quiet City” under the baton of Michael Tilson Thomas. Joo Bin is currently the Principal oboist of the Vancouver Symphony. As a guest musician, Mr. Yi has performed in concerts with the Cleveland Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the San Antonio Symphony. He recently appeared as guest Principal with the Seattle Symphony, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, the Florida Orchestra, and the Wald Ensemble in South Korea. As a student, he spent two extensive months at the Tanglewood Music Center in 2019-2020 and at the Round Top Festival Institute in 2013.

Jonathan Lo is a Canadian cellist that has performed throughout North America and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician, and has appeared as soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. His chamber music collaborations have led to performances with Geoff Nuttall, Mark Steinberg, Lynn Harrell, Dasol Kim, and Louis Schwizgebel; additionally, he has worked closely with leading composers of our time such as Osvaldo Golijov, Oliver Knussen, and Shulamit Ran. Jonathan was the founding cellist of the Rolston String Quartet, winners of the 12th Banff International String Quartet Competition and the first international ensemble to receive the Cleveland Quartet Award. Praised for their “maturity and cohesion rivalling the best string quartets in the world” (Musical Toronto), they performed throughout North America, Europe, and Israel, in such concert halls as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Wigmore Hall. In January 2024, Jonathan joined the cello section of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. For the 2021/22 season, Jonathan served as acting principal cello of the Vancouver Opera.

Canadian violinist Catherine French, a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1994, has established herself as a versatile and accomplished soloist and chamber musician in addition to her distinguished orchestral career. French has won grand prizes at all three of Canada’s major music competitions: the Canadian Music Competition, the CBC Radio Competition, and the National Competitive Festival of Music. She has performed as soloist with many leading Canadian orchestras and given recitals throughout North America and Argentina. French was featured with the Juilliard Orchestra and James de Preist, the Boston Pops and John Williams, and at Carnegie Hall in her debut with David Gilbert.

French is a dedicated member of the Calyx Piano Trio and Collage New Music. Her avid interest in chamber music has led to performances at the Marlboro, Banff, Portland, Carolina, and Missouri chamber music festivals; quartet tours of Germany and China; and annual concerts as part of the Prelude series at Tanglewood and the Curtisville Consortium. French has recorded for Albany Records and is featured in Donald Sur’s Berceuse for Violin and Piano with pianist Christopher Oldfather.

French began studying the Suzuki violin method at age 4 and continued her studies under the esteemed Canadian pedagogue Lise Elson. She graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Music and a Performer’s Certificate, then earned a master’s degree from the Juilliard School. Her teachers were Miriam Fried, Felix Galimir, and Joel Smirnoff.
