"Reasonable, but unexpected", O Henry's work concept is always memorable. Coincidentally, the design ideas that I summarized at school and followed in my work also coincided.

The design of each architecture has a unique and complex background, such as the needs of users, the physical environment around the site, the culture and policies of the city, etc. I tend to sort out a corresponding design logic among such elements and formulate a reasonable design strategy to turn the challenge into an opportunity. At the same time, the entry point of the design can be unexpected. The clever design method under to guide logic cannot only make the building more unique, but it is also more likely to turn unfavourable design conditions into advantages.

Areas affected by Sea Level Rise

Background On Climate Issues

Singapore is facing the threat of rising sea levels. The project site is located in Pasir Panjang Power district, the southern coastal area of Singapore, which is also the lowest lying place in Singapore, and therefore faces the climate problems of sea water intrusion and flooding.

Historical Transformation

The site is rich in both historical resources (World War II heritage and industrial heritage) and ecological resources (Labrador natural resources and Marine resources).

Natural Conditions

Rich but separated green resources are underutilized.

Mobility Network

The roads are discontinuous with many dead ends .

Built Up Environment

Buildings in the site are large, and their function has exclusiveness.

M.O.D.
Improving coordinated management and opportunities for people and marine life in a continuous thread of Resiliency by building connections between our lives on land and the value of our coasts.

Vision

M.O.D : Engaging People With The Sea

Marine Oriented District has the potential to improve coordinated management and opportunities for people and marine life in a continuous thread of Resiliency by building connections between our lives on land and the value of our coasts.

The existing coastline will be expanded outwards as an organic and vibrant one based on guaranteeing the land for construction.

New Foreshore Line

As we raise the coast with earth-covered buildings, the height of the coast will gradually descend from the interior to the sea. The outward expansion's width will vary in different places.

Strategies

The strategies that are focussed on to achieve this are Site Protective measures, Nature Conservation, Low Carbon Transportation and Marine oriented functions.

Water Management System

The incorporation of green stormwater infrastructure and subsurface storage captures stormwater at both the park and neighborhood scales.

Current Coastline And Hill Edge Proposed Interweaved  Landscaped Protective Edge
M.O.D.

Green Network

Proposed viewing spine connects north and south. Mangrove species at different heights in the intertidal zone and shellfish-seaweed farming promote water quality and nutrient cycling.

Blue Network

Extend the existing canal to a more natural and ecological form and propose rain gardens as water collection points that are part of an integrated water network from plot to site scale.

Mobility Network

The transformation of Pasir prioritises the pedestrian and cyclist networks by providing shared ways, shared paths and dedicated cycleways, limiting vehicle movements within the outer fringes.

Program

The proposed programs focus on the study and utilization of Marine culture.

Land Use

The new landuse contains more public functions , including exhibition, music hall, reading room and so on.

Floor Area Ratio

The development intensity will gradually decrease from the city to the sea.

Figure Ground

Large footprint to meet research and office needs, and flexible ground floor promotes accessibility and vitality.

Active Coast

In ordinary times, people can enjoy the water-friendly space on the grassy slopes and floating gardens. When the sea level rises, the MRC will be turned into a barrier to protect the inland, and the floating garden will be lifted by the sea and continue to be used by people.

Wetland Greenway

The existing drainage ditch between the two power stations is widened into a greenway. On rainy days, it collects rainwater from both sides to protect the surrounding buildings.

From Outside To Inside

Nowadays, the low quality of semi-private space leads to the lack of neighborhood interaction.

Define our home with the WIND of freedom.

When the community reaches 50 households, there is only nodding acquaintance.

When the community exceeds 100 households, there is no intersection in social relations.

As the height increases, the perceptions and use of the external environment will weaken.

Above five storeys, there is little contact with ground activity.

Theory Of Communicative Space

Oxygen Transport Through The Body

An Analogy For Energy And Oxygen Transfer

Blood is the factor that transports oxygen in the human body. In architecture, wind can also be a factor that transports heat, thereby helping the shared space to achieve a higher degree of comfort and attracting people to communicate in semi-private spaces.

Spatial Framework

Shared space is classified into four modes to match different public life needs. Residents can decide on specific activities and locations within this framework based on their needs and perceptions of the climate, thus creating a more prosperous social life.

The site is located in Guangzhou, China, a city with a subtropical monsoon climate.

Modular will grow as various shapes guided by the wind.

Multiple Shapes To Match Different Site

Modular Design

Different individuals are organized by a cooperative principle, enabling individuals to combine and grow freely, thus creating a prosperous spatial structure. Under this system, and buildings can grow to Match Different Site

(Data from IWEC)

Guangzhou is dominated by southeast wind in summer and torridity lasts for a long time.
