The Osmocote for bedding plants
In 2011 Everris™ introduced Osmocote Bloom to the market. Osmocote Bloom is a specially designed controlled release fertilizer for bedding plants like petunias, begonias and geraniums. It helps improve the quality of the plant by delivering maximum nutrition throughout the crop cycle, selling and early consumer stages. Osmocote Bloom can also save you money on labor costs. Product Characteristics:
Directions for use
• Specially developed for bedding plants • Complete trace element package • Longevity of 2 – 3 months • Recommended rate is 2 – 4 gram per liter of pot volume • Using a starter fertilizer is not necessary, nor recommended • Mid-size granule is perfect for mixing into smaller pots and packs
Osmocote Bloom has been developed for incorporating into the growing media. Osmocote Bloom begins its nutrient release immediately after application, so the product should be mixed-in right before potting the plants. During the first period after mixing, EC levels will be low. Depending on the soil temperature, nutrients are gradually released throughout a 2 – 3 month period. In the majority of bedding plant cultures, this longevity matches the entire cultivation period and even the first weeks of the consumer stage. The recommended dosage is 2 – 4 grams per liter of pot volume. However, this depends on the crop and the growing situation (see page 7 for recommended crop rates). For more specific advice, please contact your Everris advisor or potting soil manufacturer.
4
Your benefits from using Osmocote Bloom • Specifically designed for bedding plants. • Healthy, compact and uniform plants. • Sustainable; less emission to surface and ground water. • Compliant with (MPS) regulations for nitrogen and phosphate emission. • Save on labor costs; one application is all you need. • Easy application; designed for mixing into growing media. • Lower EC value in the potting soil, better growth. • Less fertilizer inputs and better results • Improved shelf-life for consumer phase.
Keeping watering and nutrition phases seperate There are three possible fertilizer application methods when cultivating bedding plants: using a water soluble fertilizer, a coated fertilizer or a combination of the two. Controlled release fertilizer Osmocote Bloom enables the grower to keep the watering and nutrition phase separate, therefore less fertilizer inputs are necessary. Labor costs can also be decreased as one application is sufficient for a complete fertilizer program for bedding plants.
Sustainable nutrition As with all Osmocote products, Osmocote Bloom is a sustainable fertilizer. A considerable amount of fertilizer can be saved per hectare. This fertilizer should be applied directly into the growing media, near the plant’s roots.
Improved shelf life
The perfect analysis for bedding plants
With Osmocote Bloom, plants are fed from the initial potting stage and continue all the way up to the first consumer phase; increasing customer satisfaction. Nutrition is released throughout the fertilizer’s longevity, assuring healthier plants in garden centers and less-wasted plants. The plants will remain healthy and vibrant for a longer period of time and therefore customers are more apt to continue to buy the same plants.
Osmocote Bloom has a NPK analysis which is ideal for bedding plants which have a 2 – 3 month crop cycle. It has a full trace element package and the small granules are perfect for maximum distribution throughout the growing media. The NPK ratio is also specially designed for condensed growth.

Product information
Product description Osmocote Bloom is a controlled release fertilizer specifically designed for bedding plants in small pots. It contains NPK, magnesium and all other necessary trace elements for a healthy growth. The granule is 100% coated and has 2 – 3 months longevity. In some situations (e.g. when crop cycles are longer than 2 – 3 months, or when using plant hole dibbling equipment), Everris recommends using Osmocote Exact which will deliver the best safety and maximum performance. Product information • Packaging details: 25 kg bag • Product code: 8739.02.01XF • Coating process: 100% coated NPK + trace elements
Directions for use As a result of the unique resin coating technology of Everris, Osmocote Bloom, for bedding plants, has a very regular release pattern. It is especially suitable for use in short-term bedding plant cultures (from 6 weeks up to 3 months). For other bedding plant types we recommend using Osmocote Exact Standard High K 3 – 4M or 5 – 6M. The longevity of Osmocote Bloom is affected by temperature (product longevity is tested and determined at 21º C). Store Osmocote Bloom in a dry place. Partly used or damaged bags should be properly closed.

Application The recommended rates mentioned above are based on non-fertilized substrates. Maximum results can be reached when the potting soil does not contain a starter fertilizer. However, if a starter fertilizer has been used, we recommend using no more than 0.5 g/l in combination with the mentioned application rates. Osmocote Bloom is primarily meant for mixing in the growing media – we do not recommend this product when dibbling. Re-fertilization with water soluble fertilizers and/or adjustments for water quality can be required under certain circumstances. Contact your Everris advisor for more specific advice. Trial first on a small scale before rate, full application or other changes in your cultural practices are implemented. As circumstances can differ, and as the application of our products is beyond our control, Everris cannot be held responsible for any negative results.

Trial results in France
Osmocote Bloom outperforms treatments with organics and water soluble fertilizer + starter fertilizer To test the effect of Osmocote Bloom on the quality of bedding plants and leaching of nutrients, research was executed at the official trial station RATHO in Brindas, France. The trial was executed in 11 bedding plant varieties under standard growing conditions. Osmocote Bloom was compared to other organic and water soluble fertilizers. Organic fertilizers were included in this trial to test their performance and effect on the environment. The use of a base feed in combination with an application of water soluble fertilizer later on in the cultivation period is seen as a common practice and was therefore also tested. Trial set-up Crops: Lobelia, Tagetes, Zinnia, Verbena, Impatiens walleriana, Gazania, Celosia, Begonia, Ageratum, Nemesia, Petunia, Antirrhinum Location: trial station RATHO, Brindas, France Potting time: week 13, 2010 Pot sizes: sets of 10 pots of 8x8x8 cm Potting soil: standard peat (Irish peat based), without fertilizer Irrigation system: overhead irrigation, hose Assessments: growth (length), number of shoots, diameter, phytotoxicity, leaf color, root development, fresh weight, shelf life Treatments: 1) Osmocote Bloom 12-7-18+TE 2-3M, 2.5 g/l 2) Organic fertilizer 7-7-10, 4 g/l 3) Starter fertilizer, 1 g/l + water soluble fertilizer, 0.8 g/l each watering

Due to the controlled release of nutrients, it is possible to grow plants more gradually, without growth peaks caused by the availability of high quantities of fertilizer. Although plants were treated with growth inhibitors in the same way, it is possible to use lower rates of chemicals under certain conditions.

Having a low EC level directly after potting is essential for good root development. In this trial soil samples were taken and analyzed from pots from both treatments. The starter fertilizer, which is most commonly used, showed high EC and nutrient levels right from the start. However Osmocote Bloom gave a low EC value at the start, which is much more beneficial for better root development and healthy growth.

Better growth with Osmocote Bloom and starter fertilizer for short cultures In 2011 Everris conducted a trial to test the effect of Osmocote Bloom with a starter fertilizer in short cultures. The purpose of the trial was to find out if adding a small amount of starter fertilizer can enhance leaf color and branching. A single application of Osmocote Bloom appears to not be sufficient enough for short cultures (3 – 4 weeks). The build-up of nutrition appeared to be too low. The trials were conducted at Pot and Bedding Plant Nursery Peter van der Plas in Maasdijk, the Netherlands. Treatments were applied to Viola, under normal growing conditions. Osmocote Bloom without starter fertilizer was compared to a treatment of Osmocote Bloom with starter fertilizer.
Trial set-up

The best results were recorded in the treatments with 3 g/l Osmocote Bloom + 0.5 g/l starter fertilizer. Plants were well branched, showed good color and were nicely compact. Adding a small amount of starter fertilizer delivers the best results for short cultures like Viola cornuta.
Key conclusion • Adding 0.5 g/l starter fertilizer to an application of Osmocote Bloom gives the best results in short cultures of 3 – 4 weeks (and late summer cultures like autumn pansies).
