inner With Friends won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2000. Since then, it has proven to be a modern classic as the most produced play of Donald Margulies’ impressive array of great plays. In fact, this is Everyman Theatre’s fourth Donald Margulies play...clearly we have an affinity for his writing!
comfort, happiness, warmth, sympathy, and celebration—all of the many emotions of life. And these ups and downs of life are felt within both the romantic relationships and the friendships of this play. It’s real life; I’m certain we can all identify with being a Gabe or a Karen, or a Beth or a Tom at some point in our development.
I’m always eager to see our actors sink their teeth into Margulies’s characters. Dinner with Friends especially highlights the many layers and dimensions of friends, lovers, and relationships. His dialogue is so dynamic and filled with nuance, it’s a dream to work on scenes scripted by him.
Speaking of great food and great friends, if you haven’t already signed up for one of our springtime “Play-A-Role” events, do so now! This series is in its third year and invites guests into the homes of Everyman board members and supporters for an interactive playreading of a famous play. In addition to taking part in the reading, guests are also treated to a fabulous meal (food is love!) and fantastic company. This year, we are adding a twist to the series and adding two events right here at the theatre that will be hosted by Resident Company Members! Join Beth Hylton for a reading of the hilarious Blithe Spirit on April 13th or Bruce Nelson for a reading of the classic thriller An Inspector Calls on May 3rd. Proceeds from the events directly support Everyman’s artistic and education initiatives. Tickets are on sale on our website now.
Something that really drew me to this play was the idea of the impermanence of marriage and the unwritten contract between close friends. It's fascinating to explore our expectations and fears as middle age approaches. Will we double down on our marriage or blow it up? Something else that drew me to this play is the fact that I’m a chronic foodie. It’s no secret that I love preparing and eating an amazing meal with friends and family. Gabe and Karen are foodies too, and part of their relationship with their friends is creating fantastic meals for them. I believe that food is love! The act of preparing and sharing a meal together with friends and family is something that can bring
Thank you for joining us! I invite you now to sit back, relax, and enjoy Dinner with Friends.

Growing “Four Letter Words OK in School Mag, Judge Rules.” up in “Baby-Boomer Brooklyn”, Margulies was exposed to theatre from a young age. Though his parents were not artists (his father sold wallpaper and his mother was HIS PARENTS...TOOK MARGULIES TO SEE BROADWAY SHOWS. IT WAS a homemaker who eventually returned THERE HE DISCOVERED HIS PASSION to work in an office), they took Margulies FOR WRITING. to see Broadway shows. It was there Margulies discovered his passion for writing: he knew that he was not interested Margulies would later attend the State in performing, but he had a keen interest University of New York at Purchase, in writing sketch comedies, parodies, and majoring in Visual Arts, keeping his roots short stories. firmly grounded in the New York City metropolitan area. Though dedicated to his teaching at Yale University, Margulies is still actively writing plays, most recently publishing The Country House in 2014. He currently resides in New Haven, Connecticut with his wife, Lynn, and their son, Miles.

Keeping many of Margulies’ works grounded in his hometown has been a fruitful path: he has been nominated for multiple awards spanning his entire career, including: the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in Drama for Dinner with Friends, the 2010 Outstanding New Play Tony Award for Time Stands Still, the 1999 Outstanding Play Drama Desk Award for Collected Stories, and the 1992 Best New American Play Obie Award for Sight Unseen. inner with Friends was first commissioned by the Actor’s Theatre of Louisville, where it received its world premiere at the 1998 Humana Festival of New American Plays. Later that year, a revised version of the script was sent to the South Coast Repertory theatre in Costa Mesa, CA and produced in October 1998. Between its premiere in Louisville and subsequent production in Costa Mesa, a new director and creative team were brought on to further develop the script and narrative. Playwright Donald Margulies was very involved in the rehearsal process, stating that he made “almost daily changes” to the script, including structural adjustments. The change in production team provided Margulies an opportunity to refine what would become the final version of Dinner with Friends. While in rehearsals at South Coast Repertory, Margulies began positioning the show for a commercial run. He reached out to commercial producers across the country, but it was not until the EVERYMAN THEATRE | 6
production was nearing the end of its run at South Coast Repertory that a producer was interested in working on the piece. After taking the play through several outof-town tryouts, the play premiered OffBroadway to critical acclaim in November 1999 at the Variety Arts Theatre, playing 654 performances before closing. Between the production at South Coast Repertory and its eventual transfer to New York, most of the cast members left the show for other opportunities. At the time of its debut in New York only Julie White—who played Beth in the South Coast Repertory production—remained. After closing in New York, the play went on to have a long run in Paris at the Comedie des Champs-Elysees and productions in cities all over the world, including London, Berlin, Vienna, Stockholm, Tokyo, Mumbai, Seoul, Tel Aviv and Istanbul. In 2001 the play was adapted for TV by HBO, and the film, starring Dennis Quaid, was nominated for an Emmy Award.

In 2014, Dinner with Friends was revived on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company. It was at this time that Donald Margulies updated the script, changing references to things such as slides, video tapes, and car phones, to their more modern equivalents. Since 2014, all performances of Dinner with Friends use the updated script, giving a show with impressive longevity even more opportunity to be presented to new audiences without dating the context in which it was originally presented.
In addition to the Pulitzer, Dinner with Friends received an American Theatre Critics’ Association New Play Citation, The Dramatists’ Guild/Hull-Warriner Award, the Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Play, the Outer Critics Circle Award, a Drama Desk Award nomination, and was selected as a Burns Mantle Best Play of 1999-2000.

WHAT IS THE BROMO DISTRICT? Imagine an arts district that connects the Stadiums and Downtown with a major corridor of Theatres, Galleries, and other public displays of art. Heading north, up the main arteries of Eutaw and Howard Streets, encounter Theatres, a public marketplace, and incubators spawning pop up galleries and emerging artists to be discovered. Continue on to find arts organizations celebrating the history and heritage of Baltimore and cultural institutions leading visitors up to the northern reaches of the district at Read and Howard Streets. In the next decade the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District will become a premiere district for performances and arts exhibitions sought out by citizens of Baltimore and visitors alike. The district will offer opportunities for artists of all disciplines to live, work, and create here. The district encourages the collaboration among its stakeholders and will attract new ones offering resources towards the creation and display of the arts.

A HISTORY OF EVERYMAN
E
veryman Theatre was founded by Vincent Lancisi in 1990. From the beginning, Everyman strove to provide top-notch theatre that is affordable and accessible to everyone. With a Resident Company of local, professional artists, Everyman has staged critically-acclaimed productions ranging from classics to contemporary works to world premieres over the past 27 years.
Everyman’s first production—The Runner Stumbles—was produced in the winter of 1990 at Saint John’s Church. For the next four years, Everyman could only afford to produce one production per year at various locations in Baltimore, including Vagabond’s Theatre, the Theatre Project and even a classroom at MICA.
subscriptions numbers grew and a string of popular and acclaimed productions, including Amadeus, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Lion in Winter, The Glass Menagerie, The Crucible, and the wildly successful Proof, proved that Everyman was a mainstay in the Baltimore theatre scene. Through a generous donation from Bank of America and the Harold A. Dawson Trust, Everyman was given its new home on Fayette Street. Over the span of six years, Everyman completed a successful $18 million capital campaign co-chaired by Gina and Dan Hirschhorn. In January 2013, Everyman celebrated the Grand Opening of its new permanent home on Fayette Street with the record-breaking production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, August: Osage County.
The 1994/95 Season marked a series for firsts for Everyman. It was the first year at Everyman celebrated its 25th anniversary 1727 North Charles Street, which would during the 2015/16 Season by producing be Everyman's home for 18 years. It also "The Great American Rep," a feat featuring marked the first multi-production line-up— American classics Death of a Salesman and A starting with Sam Shepard's Buried Child— Streetcar Named Desire performed with the and also offered subscriptions to patrons for same cast in rotating repertory. the first time. Now in its 28th Season, Everyman invites you Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, to be a part of its next chapter.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT: JOE & PHYLLIS JOHNSON & SHIRLEY T. HOLLANDER
J
oe and Phyllis Johnson and Shirley T. Hollander are among Everyman’s long-standing supporters; in fact, both Artistic Director Vincent Lancisi and Joe will joke about how Joe was Donor #002 from Everyman’s early days (the search is still out for Donor #001!). In addition to both being longtime fans of Everyman, Joe and Shirley have a long history as good friends as well, going back to high school. “I met Vinny over 30 years ago, before there even was an Everyman!” said Joe. “I was first introduced to Joe through the Baltimore Playwrights Festival,” explained Lancisi. “He wrote a play called Playback, which I directed when I first moved to Baltimore. Joe and I became fast friends during this rehearsal process and he became instrumental in introducing me to Baltimore.” “Phyllis and I attended Everyman’s very first production, The Runner Stumbles, in a church hall on St. Paul Street,” explained Joe. They saw the subsequent productions (which, at the time, included just one or two shows per year) and quickly fell in love with the organization. “I am certain we have not missed more than three Everyman productions since its inception (if that!),” said Joe. Joe and Phyllis introduced Shirley and her late husband, David, to Everyman. “Joe invited us to attend a show in 1995, and we immediately signed up as subscribers that night!” said Shirley.
“Shirley has always been an incredible cheerleader for Everyman,” said Lancisi. “I even remember her taking postcards and putting them in her building and in restaurants in the early days. She’s always been an avid supporter and I am so appreciative for that.” “Everyman plays a very important role in Baltimore’s cultural landscape,” said Joe. “I believe that it is the best theatre company in Maryland and the surrounding states. The productions are always first rate and it has a marvelous acting company. It is professional in every way.” Phyllis, Joe, and Shirley have particularly enjoyed seeing the organization grow over the past 3 decades. “What Vinny has done to make his dream a reality, including but not limited to, his ability to raise money for the new theatre, astounds me,” said Joe. “I cannot think of anyone I know who could accomplish what he has. The fact that he handles so many tasks daily (more than I can comprehend) and does so flawlessly has me in awe. I marvel at what he has accomplished and what he continues to do.” With nearly 30 years of productions to choose from, it is tough to choose favorites! For Joe and Phyllis, productions of Proof, Fences, Deathtrap, and Death of a Salesman are among their very favorites. Shirley fondly remembers productions of The Last Night of Ballyhoo and Proof. All three sponsors love great theatre and, according to them, Everyman is the “gold standard.” DINNER WITH FRIENDS | 19
