A NOTE FROM A NOTE FROM VINCENT M. LANCISI ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, FOUNDER, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR VINCENT M. LANCISI

appy Holidays and welcome to Everyman Theatre. When I first learned that the lauded playwright Ken Ludwig was commissioned by the Agatha Christie estate to write the first stage adaptation of her famous novel, Murder on the Orient Express, I was eager to read it in the hopes of producing it at Everyman. Ken Ludwig’s plays and adaptations are always so smart, so dashing, and audiences just love his gift for writing sharp and clever dialogue. Considering that Agatha Christie is one of the finest mystery writers of all time, I knew the resulting play would be loaded with suspense. We love a good mystery at Everyman, especially at the holidays!

It’s been wildly exciting and challenging to stage Murder on the Orient Express. It requires multiple settings in exotic locales, elegant costumes, lots of props, and a large cast of talented actors. The resources required are immense. The plot is a complex puzzle and suspects lurk around every corner. It’s a veritable whodunit and what’s worse, nearly everybody has read the book or seen one of the movies beforehand. Both Mr. Ludwig and Ms. Christie have great senses of humor, so we have laughed our way through rehearsals. Everyone working on the play has had so much fun putting it all together.

generosity of our donors. The opportunity to present large plays like Murder on the Orient Express is made possible by these loyal contributors who understand that these shows are very expensive to produce. If this were a for profit, commercial theatre, your ticket price would need to be well over $150 per person just to break even. Here at Everyman, we want everybody to be able to afford to see our plays. We do this through our strategic discount programs, pay-what-you-can night, and High School Matinee program in Baltimore City schools. The Matinee Program allows students to see five plays a year and engage with teaching artists in their schools before and after each performance. Because of our donors, this wonderful program is free to the students every year. In order to keep the Matinee Program thriving and the price of tickets affordable to all, we need your help to offset the costs. Please consider making a taxdeductible gift to Everyman Theatre today. There’s a lot to celebrate these days in our fair city. We have world class cultural offerings in many neighborhoods and around every corner in Baltimore. Let’s all keep working hard together to be sure these institutions continue to thrive as they entertain, enlighten, and improve the quality of our lives. Enjoy the show.

As we welcome patrons at Everyman during the holiday season, I am reminded of the MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS | 3

WHAT WAS THE ORIENT EXPRESS? By Lindsey R. Barr

n 1883, after a number of false starts, financial troubles and difficulties negotiating with various national railway companies, Nagelmackers's Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits (wagons-lits being French for "sleeper cars") established a route from Paris to Istanbul, then called Constantinople. The newspapers dubbed it the "Orient Express"—though Istanbul was as far toward the "Orient" as this train would ever travel—and Nagelmackers embraced the name.

Similar to the First World War, the start of the Second World War in 1939 interrupted the service, which did not resume until 1945. During the war, the German Mitropa company had run some services on the route through the Balkans, but Yugoslav Partisans frequently sabotaged the track, forcing a stop to this service.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHIES AGATHA CHRISTIE (Author) Agatha Christie was born Agatha May Clarissa Miller on 13 September 1890 in Torquay, Devon, England to Alvan Miller and Clarissa Margaret. Though she was raised by both parents, her father passed away when she was 11 years old. Agatha married an aviator named Archibald Christie and had a daughter named Rosalind in 1919. During the First World War, Christie volunteered to work for the Red Cross. After the war, Agatha turned to writing, and her first novel The Mysterious Affair was published in 1920. Though many novels featured the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, this was the first novel that introduced one of Christie’s most famous protagonists. Agatha was a prolific author, writing many books including Murder on the Orient Express (1934), Death on the Nile (1937) and And Then There Were None (1939). During the Second World War, Agatha Christie worked as a pharmacist, which may have directly influenced her knowledge of poisons and chemicals that would later appear in her novels. Agatha Christie died on January 12, 1976 and is buried in a churchyard in Cholsey, Oxfordshire. KEN LUDWIG (Playwright) Ken Ludwig is a two-time Olivier Award-winning playwright who has written 28 plays and musicals, including six shows on Broadway and seven in London's West End. Lend Me A Tenor won two Tony Awards and was called "one of the classic comedies of the 20th century” by The Washington Post. Many of his works have become a standard part of the American repertoire, including Crazy For You (five years on Broadway, Tony and Olivier Awards for Best Musical), Moon Over Buffalo (starring Carol Burnett), Twentieth Century (starring Alec Baldwin), Baskerville, Shakespeare in Hollywood (Helen Hayes Award), The Game’s

Afoot (Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year), A Fox on the Fairway and Leading Ladies. His stage version of Murder on the Orient Express was written at the request of the Agatha Christie Estate and his newest play, Dear Jack, Dear Louise is currently running at Arena Stage. His book How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of the Year. His work has been performed in over 30 countries in more than 20 languages, and is produced somewhere in the United States every night of the year. www.kenludwig.com

A HISTORY OF EVERYMAN

E

veryman Theatre was founded by Vincent Lancisi in 1990. From the beginning, Everyman strove to provide top-notch theatre that is affordable and accessible to everyone. With a Resident Company of local, professional artists, Everyman has staged critically-acclaimed productions ranging from classics to contemporary works to world premieres over the past 29 years.

Everyman’s first production—The Runner Stumbles—was produced in the winter of 1990 at Saint John’s Church. For the next four years, Everyman could only afford to produce one production per year at various locations in Baltimore, including Vagabond’s Theatre, the Theatre Project and even a classroom at MICA.

subscriptions numbers grew and a string of popular and acclaimed productions, including Amadeus, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Lion in Winter, The Glass Menagerie, The Crucible, and the wildly successful Proof, proved that Everyman was a mainstay in the Baltimore theatre scene. Through a generous donation from Bank of America and the Harold A. Dawson Trust, Everyman was given its new home on Fayette Street. Over the span of six years, Everyman completed a successful $18 million capital campaign co-chaired by Gina and Dan Hirschhorn. In January 2013, Everyman celebrated the Grand Opening of its new permanent home on Fayette Street with the record-breaking production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama, August: Osage County.

The 1994/95 Season marked a series for firsts for Everyman. It was the first year at Everyman celebrated its 25th anniversary 1727 North Charles Street, which would during the 2015/16 Season by producing be Everyman's home for 18 years. It also "The Great American Rep," a feat featuring marked the first multi-production line-up— American classics Death of a Salesman and A starting with Sam Shepard's Buried Child— Streetcar Named Desire performed with the and also offered subscriptions to patrons for same cast in rotating repertory. the first time. Now in its 29th Season, Everyman invites you Throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, to be a part of its next chapter.

WHAT IS THE BROMO DISTRICT? Imagine an arts district that connects the Stadiums and Downtown with a major corridor of Theatres, Galleries, and other public displays of art. Heading north, up the main arteries of Eutaw and Howard Streets, encounter Theatres, a public marketplace, and incubators spawning pop up galleries and emerging artists to be discovered. Continue on to find arts organizations celebrating the history and heritage of Baltimore and cultural institutions leading visitors up to the northern reaches of the district at Read and Howard Streets. In the next decade the Bromo Tower Arts and Entertainment District will become a premiere district for performances and arts exhibitions sought out by citizens of Baltimore and visitors alike. The district will offer opportunities for artists of all disciplines to live, work, and create here. The district encourages the collaboration among its stakeholders and will attract new ones offering resources towards the creation and display of the arts.
