About US By Marty Hackett Inside this issue is a little quiz to help you determine how well you know your partner. One of the questions asks if you remember where you were and what you were doing when you met. The young entrepreneurs who venture to develop this magazine met while the two were living and working in Phoenix, Arizona. A talented and just as beautiful young lady was singing “Tainted Love” by Marilyn Manson in a Karaoke contest while our young man was at the same pub in a business meeting. That was how the partnership began that made them the success they are. Jay Martinez and E.R.A. McCarthy are the owners and designers of Around Trinidad, a new magazine they are working hard to offer the Trinidad community, because as Jay puts it, “We think Trinidad deserves better.” There is something about our town that people love. “It’s a beautiful town and we want to show it off,” E.R.A. explained. Even though, with the talent and experience these two young people have, they could work and live anywhere they choose, E.R.A. wants to raise her children here. Jay’s roots are in Trinidad. His mother, father and siblings have an extensive history in this community, having owned and owning their own businesses. “Jay’s mother is the only one that I trust with my children,” E.R.A. said. The couple have a 15-month old darling little girl named Tora and their precious little red-haired man, Jay Jr. came into the world just 6 weeks ago. “We were on our way back to Phoenix from Ft. Collins and we stopped in Trinidad to visit my family. E.R.A. fell in love with the town and so we’re staying,” said Jay. They purchased and remodeled a home and using their combined talents, have expanded their business to start a new website and news magazine –Around Trinidad. Through Merged Media, another company they started and have watched grow and flourish, they have designed and launched websites for the AR Mitchell Museum, Commercial Street Salon, The Trinidad Corner Shop and a website for former State Representative Wes McKinley. However, all of the recent accomplishments made in the past two years don’t compare to those preceding their move to Trinidad. Both began college at the age of 16, E.R.A. in Phoenix and Jay attending Trinidad State Jr. College and each one
studying various art forms-While Jay was studying to receive Bachelor’s Degrees in Design, Marketing, Computer Animation and Videography at the Phoenix Art Institute, E.R.A. was studying Art Education, Neuroscience, Art History and Computer Graphic Design. By 18 years of age, she was teaching K-12 art in Arizona at the Academy for Science and Technology. She has also taught 3D animation and computer graphics classes, ELL, English and ceramics. “My favorite job was working at Dunbar Elementary where we had many students from Somalia and Mexico who were in my English Language Learning classes. The school district and it’s families had very little money. None of the refugee students spoke English and they had never even seen a school bus,” E.R.A. explained. The school saw a huge influx of refugees, being the time when Somalia was suffering genocide. “It paid the lowest, but it was still my favorite!” Jay’s awe-inspiring career is just as interesting and varied. Finishing his education at the best art institute in the nation, he began work for Marvel, DC and Image Comics, drawing and coloring comic books. His mother, Elsie Martinez, has one of his first comic book covers framed and hanging in her home. “I did comics like Superman, GI Joe, Spiderman and Transformers.” He then went on to start his own business-Dreamality Studios, a technology marketing company. The company offered web design, interactive CDs, design print, motion theatres for such companies as Hummer where he designed virtual test drives and interactive virtual tours. He also produced two magazines Push, a nightlife magazine and Shake Magazine, a community news magazine similar to Around Trinidad. After That Jay became an Art Director working with print media and web design. He went on to work for Axway, a world-wide software company based in Paris. His job with Axway, which has offices all over the world and across the United States, took him to such countries as France, Italy, Spain and England, offering website marketing in multiple languages. It was when Jay was a business consultant in Phoenix in sales and marketing that he met E.R.A. who was working on a ceramic mural for Sky Harbor Airport. She put her efforts into working with Jay to build an amazing marketing and business consulting company. They moved to Ft. Collins where the couple started marketing and building the business systems for a nationwide Auto Buyer’s
They also have Right Choice Financial Advisors, where E.R.A. is a consultant to mostly elderly consumers who are being “ripped off ” by marketing and business companies. “I help them get their money back,” E.R.A. explained. Everything Around US, their website business, has all local communication platforms in cities such as San Diego, San Francisco, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Vancouver and they have added nearly 150 smaller websites for smaller communities. After two years of planning and hard work, they just recently opened their first school- Academy of CLASS- a culture language art society school in Ft. Collins. The after-school program, taught by teachers native to a variety of foreign countries, creatively teaches the students to learn a foreign language while experiencing the culture of that country. Using IPads, 3D televisions and taking virtual tours through foreign countries, E.R.A.’s hope is for her students to be “global!” “While they are learning to create Spanish pottery, they are being taught in that language,” a beaming E.R.A. explains of their creative venture. Beginning with just 15 pre-school, home-schooled and senior citizens, they are hoping to increase the student numbers this fall when school begins, and eventually expanding to the entire western hemisphere. How does the young mother and father juggle the companies they own, the employees that include a team in Bulgaria that handles all the programming and the 200 other associates that help maintain the businesses? 21st Century technology. “We run nationwide satellite companies by phone and internet, which allows us to live in Trinidad.” Here, they are energetically becoming a part of the community they have chosen to raise their children in. Jay was elected President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and E.R.A. is a board member; they have hosted, sponsored and donated funding and time to numerous events in collaboration with the Hispanic Chamber, Hometown Holidays and TSJC; and donated services to the AR Mitchell Museum for their website. Now, as the couple proudly puts it, “We want to bring the community together by putting everything in one place, a positive printed piece for locals and tourists.” Their goal is to use the Around Trinidad website and this magazine to help the residents of the community “Show Off Trinidad!” “There are so many good people here. We want to put the community’s best foot forward and show off the traditional values that make Trinidad what it is! And we’re having fun!”

News and information websites are popping up everywhere online as printed newspaper subscriptions dwindle…This is NOT a Coincidence. Why would anyone want to read a smelly newspaper, get ink on their fingers and read news that is days old when they can flip out a smart phone, go to a news website, read news minutes old and chat about it with their friends? The USC Annenberg Center for the Digital Future predicts that in 5 years most printed newspapers will be out of business. Many newspapers such as the Chicago Tribune and Minneapolis Star are bankrupt while others like the 150-year old Rocky Mountain Denver News have completely shut down. Savvy news companies like the Seattle
Post-Intelligencer have turned to an all-digital format. Magazine and book sales have gone down but they are still viable products in today’s digital society. Most likely, this is because the content is not time sensitive and many contain beautiful imagery that is better enjoyed in a tactile format. The point being… if you want breaking news, you need to get comfortable with the internet and subscribe to digital information websites that will give you news minutes old…not trivia about days long gone. Another wonderful feature of getting news online is the ability to read multiple articles from a varied group of sources. This helps you gain a clearer picture of the information presented and you can then evaluate it for yourself. You will no longer be told what you should think by one or two local journalists.

Making a Go of It Shirley Compton LOVES Mary Kay
By Doc Leonetti Like a horse and carriage, or love and marriage, Shirley Compton and Mary Kay Cosmetics are a definite fit. Mary Kay, a company that provides skin care products, sun care, anti-aging products, colognes, and an array of glamour items, has been a booming business since 1963. Mary Kay will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. Compton has been associated with the company since March 30, 29 fruitful years ago. In March of 1982, she began her venture with the corporation while still employed by the Trinidad School District as an elementary school teacher. “It’s a great home-based business,” explained Compton in a recent interview. “It can be worked full-time or part-time, and it can be easily massaged into one’s life style. I thoroughly enjoy working with clients and sometimes changing the lives of individuals, and I most thoroughly enjoy the work because of the endless personalities of all the wonderful people I meet on a daily basis, day after day, week after week, year after year. It has also been most fantastic because of the unlimited support of my entire family. Our girls were young children when I began working for Mary Kay. Dick did a million things to help,” she said of her supportive and loving husband. “His great support and the support of my children have been instrumental in my success with the company.”
A brief corporate history of the company shows us that it relates its corporate culture to its success through “independent consultants-product selling liaison and partnership.” It relies heavily on a network of consultants and franchises scattered across the world. This successful corporate model has contributed to a host of excellent beauty care and cosmetic products that are comparable to any other in the world.
Over two million consultants are staffed by the Mary Kay Corporation. Global sales for 2011 totaled three billion dollars. The effervescent Compton has sales recruits working with her in Colorado, Missouri, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, and Wisconsin. In Colorado, she has business associates working on her team in Trinidad, Walsenburg, Parker, and Cotopaxi. Mary Kay is successful for a reason, so believes Compton. The company’s philosophy is based on the Golden

Corporate priorities, most appropriately, are, ‘God first, family second, and career third.’ “I am so impressed with the company and with our founder Mary Kay Ash because of the personal interest she took in all her employees,” said Compton. “She took the corporate mottos to heart. I can personally vouch for that. She passed away in November 22, 2001, but I will never forget her kindness and sincere concern for the people who worked for her. She contacted me personally numerous times to inquire as to the health and welfare of me and my family. She created a great cosmetic company. This line of work presents a great opportunity for women seeking full or part-time employment. I would certainly recommend the Mary Kay Company very highly.”
Howdy Visitors Trinidad has Two Times the Charm ******Trinidad’s two local state byways will be participating in a program designed for kid friendly and family healthy vacations. ****** Photos by Trinidad and Las Animas County News Article by Tara Marshall Colorado Welcome Center TRINIDAD-----The two Colorado State Scenic and Historic Byways that pass through Trinidad and significant parts of Las Animas County have been chosen to participate in a new exciting program designed by the Colorado Department of Transportations State Byways Commission. The program will center on offering kid-healthy, family-oriented travel experiences. It will target families who enjoy nature based travel and seek affordable weekend getaway adventures. Each of the chosen byways is poised to capitalize on national programs designed to get kids moving and exploring the outdoors. The program will be seeking to build strong relationships between the adjoining communities along each byway by offering joint assistance to businesses in developing family centered experiences. Of the states 25 Scenic and Historic Byways, five individual byways were selected to participate in the program. To qualify, each byway was asked to submit an application
based on the ability to offer outdoor recreation year round to youth of all ages ranging from pre-school through high school. Two of the five byways selected are anchored in Trinidad: the Highway of Legends which runs between the Cities of Trinidad and Walsenburg on Highway 12 and the Santa Fe Trail which comes up from New Mexico on I-25, heading down Trinidad’s Main Street and stretches all the way to the Kansas state line. Also chosen to participate were the West Elk Loop Scenic Byway near Gunnison, the Los Caminos Antiguos Scenic Byway near Alamosa and the Gold Belt Tour Scenic Byway near Cripple Creek. The program was designed to raise Colorado’s profile on the National scene as the leading travel destination for family experiences. As the program launches and is marketed on a state and national level, Trinidad will benefit both in tourism and economics. “During the application process we partnered with Lamar & La Junta to submit an entry for the Santa Fe Trail and we partnered with La Veta and Cuchara to submit an entry for the Highway of Legends. Only 5 byways out of the 25 state byways were chosen to participate and both of our entries were chosen. Women on the Land: Creating Conscious Community

Purpose of this event: Screening of the new film, Women on the Land: Creating Conscious Community. The film shows why the sustainable, organic, local food movement is essential in our current world of dwindling natural resources and economic decline. The film features Trinidad local Jaquie Gipson’s exceptional music on the soundtrack and has many of the farm scenes that local artist Karen Howl has painted. Jaquie will play live music before and after the film and Karen will have her farm paintings on display in the Massari foyer. Amanda Gray (skilled farmer, goatherd, and all-around remarkable person) will be the guest speaker after the film. Many folks in our area are interested in this type of lifestyle as demonstrated by an increased number of small farms. a CSA, the Co-op, Trinidad Community Farmer’s Market, the community garden, the Baca-Bloom Heritage Gardens, Earth Mountain Farm, Foghino Farm and an increase in home gardeners, sustainable homes and growing domes. These groups will be encouraged to have information available to distribute after the screening. It is hoped that a large part of community will attend the showings and get involved with our local food producers, crafters and artists.

Lovely Locks Hair Tips
Find a shampoo that lathers less. Lots of suds doesn’t necessarily mean clean and can be just the opposite. Sudsy shampoos often contain moisturizing products that leave build-up in your hair, making it look and feel dirtier quicker. Try a sulfate-free formula.

Give your locks a burst of cold. Turn cold water on for a second before you hop out of the shower and quickly rinse it through your strands which helps seal the cuticle. This leaves a beautiful, sleek finish to your hair.

Play hot-and-cold as you dry. When blow drying alternate between the cool and heat settings of your blow dryer, letting your hair cool off for five seconds, before repeating on another section. Alternating between heat and cool-down time helps set your style, giving you more body.

Use rollers for high-volume. Blow out your locks until they’re dry. Then, section off the hair on top of your head—between your temples and all the way back to the crown of your hair. Divide that section into three smaller sections vertically and wrap each in a 2-inch velcro hair roller. Keep in for 30 minutes, unwrap your strands, lightly comb them out, and spray for hold.

Forget the turban. Keeping your wet hair wrapped in a towel for a half-hour as you do your make-up will cause frizz! Instead, squeeze out excess water as soon as you’re out of the shower, then let your hair air-dry for five or ten minutes before blow drying.

Apply products 10 minutes before styling. Applying product 10 minutes before you curl, straighten or whatever helps it fully absorb into your strands so you get all of its benefits.

Wrap—don’t clamp! When using a curling iron, you don’t need to clamp them to the barrel. Wrap sections around the iron and hold in place for about 10 seconds to score softly falling curls.

Use spray bottles as part of your lazy-day routine. Day off and you don’t want to go through the usual hair routine? Just spray the top layer of your hair until damp, and then use a big barrel round brush (2 inches or more) to blow your hair dry for a sleek look

Keep your hair healthy. Regular trimming every six to eight weeks will keep thin ends in check. Watch your diet as well - make sure you get sufficient vitamins and minerals especially B12 and Iron.

TSJC’s Robotics Students Propel to Top Honors By Kathleen Donnelly Mars rover ‘Curiosity’ is currently in the national news along with images of cheering NASA scientists and stories of Curiosity’s first test drives. Closer to home, two teams of young scientists at Trinidad State Junior College also anxiously waited for the performance results of the two robots they built this year for the 2012 Robotics Challenge held at the National Sand Dunes this spring. ‘Casper II’ was re-designed and improved from last year’s ‘Casper I’, by a team of four high school students, Greg Berry, Rachel Hadaway, McCoy Nguyen, and Janie Robinson. Their main goal was to correct last year’s issues and improve on last year’s performance. The new CASPER excelled this year, finishing four of the five courses. No other robot did as well, even though this year, nine universities and two community colleges participated, with a total of sixteen robots. Some of the improvements to CASPER II were stronger chains, better whiskers, a laser, and more power and durability. CASPER II was also designed to go a little slower this year to allow the programming to keep up with the robot. Rachel Hadaway and Greg Berry were invited to demonstrate CASPER II and his capabilities at the Colorado
Space Grant Consortium’s Research Symposium in Boulder. They were the first high school team ever invited to participate in the Space Grant’s Research Symposium. ‘SPAR’ was designed, created, and built by Trinidad State sophomore students, Onorio Franco, Jr., Edgar Meraz, and Zach Scott, last year’s CASPER team. They took a completely new design and managed to build a working robot by the time of the Challenge. SPAR has only one computer board that has eight integrated cogs working together. Franco, Meraz, and Scott had to learn a new higher-powered language to program it. SPAR has whiskers, compass, beacon, and a tilt sensor. There are two motors driving the front wheels, which were originally designed by Edgar Meraz last year for CASPER I. Zach Scott and Onorio Franco also attended the Colorado Space Grant Consortium’s Research Symposium in Boulder where Zach Scott set up the demonstration table for SPAR, winning the People’s Choice Award for the second year in a row. Onorio Franco was invited to present his research paper, which took second in the state out of twenty-two papers submitted, eighteen accepted for presentation. Most of the university presentations were senior projects. No other community colleges were accepted to present.
The teams were led by Cindy Clements, Mathematics Professor and Faculty Robotics Advisor, Earl Nesbitt, Electrical Advisor, and Karen Howl, Building Advisor. Andy Lindsay at Parallax was immensely helpful to the advanced team. He supplied the team with web-based lessons that the team beta-tested for him, got them some proto PropBOE boards, that they also tested, and regularly helped sort out problems with the transition to the SPIN language. This is the third year TSJC has participated in the Robotics Challenge due to the college’s keen academic focus in science, technology and math programs and the exceptional quality, expertise and commitment of its faculty. For the People of Trinidad in Memory of J.R. and Lidia Duran Joe Raymond (J.R.) Duran founded the Duran Oil Company in 1977 but the family has been supplying Las Animas County with Petroleum since 1957. J.R. served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and suffered a severe head wound. He was awarded a purple heart and many numerous medals for his bravery and for being wounded during service. He helped found the Trinidad – Las Animas County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Coal Miner’s Memorial and the Korean War Memorial. J.R. and his wife Maria Lidia Medina Duran were treasures in our community, supporting numerous events, organizations and families of Trinidad. Memories of our loved ones are what keep them alive and on no particular day or time of year do we remember them more clearly that on those special days when we shared time together. You can hear their laughter, see their faces with such clarity, and feel their presence stronger than ever. Labor Day is when J.R. and Lidia Duran would shine. The rodeo, the Las Animas County Fair and the Labor Day Parade held special places in their hearts and lives. They always supported the weekend’s activities. The honesty, integrity and hard work that were the foundation of Duran Oil Company rolled over into all the joyous happenings J.R. and Lidia were involved in during the Labor Day weekend. In J.R.’s spare time, he enjoyed ranching and tending to his horses and cattle. When he wasn’t busy doing that, he was irrigating, raising and bailing hay on his farms while attending to all other issues that a farmer is confronted with, but round-up time was always a favorite time of year for the Duran family.
J.R. and Lidia will always be remembered as “the nicest people one could ever meet.” They promoted Trinidad, Las Animas County and the surrounding area on a daily basis as a great place to live. J.R. spread the word about Trinidad and the area he loved wherever he was. They will be remembered for helping many people including complete strangers. Being a humble man, J.R. never spoke of the many compliments he received from people. He didn’t look for praise, recognition or expect anything in return. He felt contributing back to his community was his duty and a privilege. J.R. has four lovely children, three daughters and one son. His son, Ray Duran, has taken on the family business and is a blessing to our community. He works alongside his wife Christina to continue building the Duran Oil Company and to help the people of Trinidad. They donate time, money and services to The Chamber of Commerce, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, TSJC, Hometown Holidays, The Round-Up Association, the Trinidad Triggers and our local schools along with numerous others. Ray and Christina sponsored this issue of Around Trinidad. They are lovely people to work with, wonderful friends and great parents. Local Business Owner Makes A BIG Stink

We need to unite and come together as a community. We need to support local,” Rivera said. “I just bought a new work truck at J&J Motors. All of our trailers come from Topar, all of our parts for equipment and trucks are bought locally, and the local stores give us smokin deals.”
J.J. Rivera has made a big stink by helping a number of local non-profit organizations. He donates money, time, services and of course port-a-potties. His family is dedicated to supporting the community and any events that bring everyone together. Mr. Rivera started Little Stinker in May of 2010, “I wanted to get out of the oil fields and be my own boss. I was running a water truck company and wanted to do something different.” Rivera said. Little Stinker is a member of the Chamber of Commerce here and in Walsenburg as well as a member of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Little Stinker donates a lot back to all the non-profits in services and goods, more than anyone will ever think of,” Rivera said humbly. “We try to help out in any way to all local charities that we can, we donate and help because it is the right thing to do, not for the recognition.”
Little Stinker has donated to Santa Fe Trail Days, The Trinidad Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, The Coal Miners Memorial, cancer fundraising events, the Hoehne School District along with other school districts for many of their events including football games and the Ronald McDonald House. “The McDonald House is a charity close to my heart, my wife was premature…my nephew was premature… the great people of the Ronald McDonald Houses took care of us.” Rivera added. Little Stinker also donates to the UMWA at the Ludlow Memorial.
Rivera is trying to bring in a national portapotty manufacturer to build a warehouse here in Trinidad. It would create new jobs and add to our economy. The two nearest warehouses are in Albuquerque, NM and Rifle, CO. “Little Stinker is lucky to provide service to such a great community. We will shop local, buy local, and give back and take care of our great town,” Rivera added. “We all grew up together, we should never give up on Trinidad, we need to take care of each other, stop all the division, come together as a community and support local and one another. If we do this and focus on all the positive, Trinidad can be unstoppable.” By David J. Santistevan Jr.
Last year without hesitation, Rivera ran a number of his pumps and facilities out to the Hoehne schools after a water line broke. They were going to cancel school so Little Stinker sent out the necessary equipment to keep the school open at no charge to the district within 20 minutes. Little Stinker has five trucks that include a Tandem truck (currently in North Texas), an International (in Arkansas), a Ford Tandem in Pueblo and trucks locally. “We have a couple of hundred customers using our portapotties, we get about four to five hundred customers using our septic tanks every year. This is not only Las Animas County but it includes Colfax County in New Mexico to Texline, Texas to Oklahoma,” Rivera added. “We go everywhere if customers are willing to

HEALTHY LIVING Use it or lose it! Many of us have heard this mantra over the years and it is especially true of our bodies; our muscles and our brain. And it has nothing to do with age. True for young and old alike, if we sit around all day we will actually lose muscle girth, and therefore strength. We were born to move! Sitting is detrimental to our health. Exercising and remaining active is therefore important for maintaining strength and function. As with our body, it is important to exercise our brain every day. Watching television, even documentaries, doesn’t count as “brain exercise.” That’s like watching an aerobics DVD while eating a bag of chips. It may be fun, but it really won’t help us.
If you are into puzzles, I suggest activities such as Sudoku, Seek-n-Find and crossword puzzles. If you like games, I highly recommend card games and trivia board games and it’s great family fun time. You can also find many brain exercise activities available on the Internet. Make simple exercise a community discovery time. Take an evening stroll along the Purgatoire River Trail, join the local Yoga group or do a selfguided art and museum tour through downtown Trinidad. One of the easiest ways to use our brains daily is to stop using the memory function on the phone. In my opinion, applications such as memory functions and spell-check have weakened our ability to remember things. It’s OK to program numbers into your phone, but when you use your phone, skip the instant dial. If you have to look at the phone number, write it down and then dial the number. Another way to challenge your brain is to use your non-dominant hand and arm for tasks such as eating. This simple act will feel uncoordinated in the beginning, but it will become easier as you practice. If you are up to a challenge, practice writing your name with your non-dominant hand once a day, both in print and cursive.

Round-UP Queen Rides Again! Jessica Painter 2011-2012
Trinidad & Las Animas County Round-Up Queen What do you do when you have no contestants step up to vie for the coveted title of Round- up Queen? Well, when you have a young lady that has done such a bang-up job of representing the community and your organization for the past year, you offer her the opportunity to represent you for a second year. That is exactly what the Trinidad Round-Up Association decided to do, which means 2011 Round-Up Queen Jessica Painter rides again in 2012!
Jessica is very active in the sport, having been a member of National High School Rodeo and National Little Britches Rodeo. Jessica, riding either Buckshot, her mother’s horse, or Sin in Billy, her own horse, has turned around many a barrel or awed the spectators in the horse shows she has participated in. She has been a member of 4-H for four years showing horses and beef. She is also a proud officer of the very active Hoehne FFA chapter. “I respect my rodeo heritage as much as I value this amazing opportunity to encourage participation in the sport to my peers.” Jessica is the daughter of Mike Painter and Kim Palmer. Her very proud mother understands the honor that comes with being selected Rodeo Queen, having carried that title when she was a young girl. “It was such an honor serving as your 2011 Queen and I am looking forward to continuing the representation and title in my 2012 term!” said Jessica proudly. Truly, it is our honor as a community to have such a talented and lovely young lady representing this time-honored heritage known as the sport of rodeo! By Marty Hackett
“Honoring Trinidad this summer has been a blast!” the 17-year-old beauty said about her experience as rodeo queen. “I have had the opportunity to represent Trinidad in fairs, rodeos and parades and my travels have taken me from New Mexico to Wyoming. I was able to participate in Cheyenne Frontier Days where I rode in the famous parade and received complimentary rodeo tickets.” Much to the dismay of many young men at Hoehne High School where she is currently a senior, rodeo is Jessica’s true love! “I grew up as a ‘daddy’s girl,’ cowboying on local ranches throughout southern Colorado. Later, following in my mother’s footsteps, I was introduced to the sport of rodeo.”

BACKYARD VACATION Wild Wes Trail Ride
Looking to get away from everything for a few days but not willing to stray too far from home. Then a trail ride hosted by former state representative Wes McKinley could be just the activity you’re looking for. The ride begins at a lovely ranch in Branson and continues through into Trinidad. The trip takes about 3 or 4 days and during that time most cell phones don’t work, there is no television or internet, and no Motel 6. You ride all day long and enjoy the magical scenery, beautiful wildlife, and colorful companions such as Black Jack and Wes. At night, you rest under the stars and breathe the crisp air. The entire trip is a respite from the hectic over stimulated society we now live in. Everyone will

Trinidad Family Recipes…Our Kitchen Heritage! Fran’s Special Potatoes 10 medium Red potatoes 1 sm. Red onion 1 sm. Red pepper 1 sm. Green pepper 1 Yellow squash 1 Green squash 3 roasted Green chiles (mild or hot) ½ tsp. seasoned Black pepper Salt to taste ¼ tsp. minced garlic Sun-dried tomatoes
Peel potatoes and slice or dice to fry. Cut up all other vegetables. Fry all together in olive oil until tender, adding salt, pepper and garlic at the end. Fran Monteleone
Little Hat Soup (Capelletti in Brado)
Roll dough about 1/16 in. thick. Cut into rounds with a 2 ½ inch round cookie cutter. Place ½ tsp. chicken mixture in center of each round of dough. Fold each round in half, covering the mounds of filling. Dampen edges of dough with water and press together to seal. Bring two extreme ends together. Dampen and press together to seal. Bring chicken broth to boiling and add the little hats. Cook about 20-25 mins. Serve with broth. Jane Modica
Prepare and set aside 3 quarts chicken broth. Combine: ½ c. Ricotta or cottage cheese ½ c. finely chopped, cooked chicken 2 Tbs;. grated Parmesan cheese 1 egg, slightly beaten 1/8 tsp. salt Few grains nutmeg and pepper Set aside. Prepare a noodle dough: 2 c. sifted flour ¼ tsp. salt 2 eggs, beaten 6 Tbsp. water Chess Pie 1/3 c. butter ¾ c. sugar 2 eggs, well beaten ¼ c. evaporated milk 1/c. chopped dates ½ c. chopped walnuts or pecans 1 tsp vanilla
Cream butter, sugar and add eggs, well beaten. Add milk, dates, nuts and vanilla. Bake at 425 degrees for 10 mins. Reduce heat to 325 degrees for 30 minutes or until firm. Serve with whipped cream. Wilma Ruiz

Raggio! Raggio’s creative playground flows in and out of his home with sculptures and found art dotted about the yard, and a proliferating garden adding; just a clue as to the nature of the man who “lives!” inside. Abstract paintings and sculptures are found throughout his home, reflecting the mood of the artist at one particular time in his life or another; remnants of times when his creative free spirit soared in one direction or another. “The art direction goes the way the brain feels most comfortable going. It’s all open for the mind,” Raggio explained. A tour of his gallery gives one a chronological view of Raggio’s discovery of himself and his own talent. As he explained various pieces of artwork, he went through the forming process, the meaning of each piece, how the idea changed from what it began into what it ended up being. “There is no wrong way to create,” he emphasized, again and again. His philosophy is all about unleashing
one’s artistic powers, nurturing one’s mind with creative thought, letting it flow until… “Bam” there it is, your creation!” Raggio speaks in fluent exclamation points!!! or with the … (dot, dot, dot) that lets you finish the thought your own creative way. The exclamation point with which he signs his name is a good indication of John Raggio’s feelings for the compelling sculptural forms he creates. Raggio designs his one-of-a-kind pieces as he works, without sketches. His fascination with the human form is evident in all of his works, which range from wall-mounted unique expressions, to head forms with elaborate ceremonial headdresses, to more abstract flowing forms, which curl up to more than four feet in height. He hand-builds most elements using coils, balls and strings of clay, sometimes beginning with a wheel-thrown base. The paintings hanging hither and thither vary from “rubadubs” in fluorescent colors that make you want to look deeper to find an image, which made me reminisce about lying on my back and watching the clouds and finding the figures that moved and changed as I gazed. Others were three dimensional abstracts with a profound message.
Story By: Marty Hackett While still in college, a severe motorcycle accident channeled Raggio into his career as an artist. He was studying ceramics for physical therapy when a damaged pot became a prototype for his unique expressions. “My imagination picked right up on creating a distorted facial expression from a discarded mound of clay. Since then, my outlook has been: just make a mistake, recognize the possibilities, and create as the ideas flow into your mind.” That is exactly what Raggio has done during more than forty years as a sculptor, teacher and lecturer in Southern California. A painter, poet, potter and sculptor, his work is represented at numerous shows and galleries throughout the country, and in many public and private collections. You can see Raggio’s artistic flair at the upcoming Black and White Art and Fine Crafts Show presented by the Mitchell Art Center, 150 E. 1st St. in Trinidad. Opening night is Friday, September 21, open to the public beginning at 6:30 and the show will be up until October 13. “This journey has been great!...a timeless token ride…”
TRINIDAD TREASURES Timeless Beauty Theresa Passero Our Gorgeous Silver Queen Candidate

Although she didn’t win, her beauty and loveliness of spirit is a pleasure for us all to enjoy. Passero, 96 years old, was born in Sopris, Colorado one of the oldest and most productive mining towns located west of Trinidad on Highway 12, where she attended the historic Lincoln High School. During that time, she worked for a local dry cleaner caring for and talking to customers. “I worked in this industry my whole life. I devoted myself to serving the customers. Giving them a hometown feel and the best quality dry cleaning,” Passero said. “I always took the time to do the extra step of repairing a button, repairing a hem. I rarely took a sick day and I was often forced to take a day off and vacations. I loved what I did.” According to those that know her Passero is an excellent seamstress and she can make or repair most anything. “I love to knit, I love making many pairs of knitted slippers for Christmas,” Passero added. “I also love to embroidery and crochet.” She is active in the Catholic Church, managing St. Thomas Choir for a number of years and she was actively involved as a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Passero never married, but she loved to take in stray animals (cats). “When I came home from work, kittens would fill my trees waiting for me to feed them some supper,” Passero added. “I
took care of my parents late in life. I love my family.” The Colorado State Fair has been hosting the contest since 1974. The purpose is to focus on ladies over the age of 70 who live in Colorado Nursing Homes, showing the life and vitality of these special woman. The pageant is sponsored by the Pueblo Chieftain and is now held prior the Colorado State Fair. The contestants compete in a morning event/luncheon. All participants are encouraged to enjoy senior activities and festivals at the Colorado State Fairgrounds during Senior Citizen’s Day and all the parades including the big parade on Saturday Aug. 25 and the Fiesta Day Parade on Sunday Sept. 2. For 38-years Armstrong Jewelers of Pueblo has provided the crown for the Silver Queen winners. Since 1984 the Pueblo Chieftain has been a proud supporter of the event. There were 15 other contestants this year from Canon City, Florence, Pueblo, Colorado Springs and Walsenburg. You Lucky Cat The exotic and somewhat mysterious Siamese cat hails from the country of Thailand. They have always been a popular breed, some even residing in royal palaces. In the past Siamese cats were trusted to protect royal palaces and monasteries from evil spirits. These cats were also thought of as bringing good fortune to their owners. In 1884, the first Siamese cats were sent to England as gifts for a British general then they made their way to America. Today, Siamese cats are one of the most recognized breeds. Even though there are several different colors to this breed, there are markings that qualify a cat as a true Siamese. These cats are known for bodies lighter in color with darker areas around the feet, tail, legs, and face. They can weigh anywhere between 6 - 16 lbs, with bright eyes that are normally slanted - which is another clue that the cat is a true Siamese. Traditionally, Siamese cats are robust, with round heads and a truly muscular build. They are well known throughout the world for their color points and unique personalities. Unlike other breeds, Siamese breeds have a talent
for communicating with people. If you are looking for a cat that is nice and quiet, you wouldn’t want a Siamese. These cats love to play, love to make noise, and they also happen to be the most social breed of cats out there. Siamese cats demand a lot of attention, because in their minds, they believe that the world revolves around them. For this very reason, they can tend to be quite dependent on their owners. They love to play, and crave interaction. If you leave them alone for too long, they won’t like it. They like to get attention, love to play, and hate to be left by themselves.

Siamese cats have a life span that is similar to other breeds, which is normally around 15 - 20 years, sometimes even longer. As long as you feed him on a daily basis and take him to the vet for his regular checkups and shots, he will be around for years and years to come. Most people who have their Siamese cat for over 10 years, find the cat to be more like a child than a pet. No matter how you look at it, a Siamese cat is a great pet. Although the Siamese breed does require a lot of attention, they are excellent pets that you can smother with love. They are

Forward
Funding Now Secure for Construction Trinidad Utilities Superintendent Jim Fernandez and Former Trinidad Mayor John Rino sign the final paper work to receive funding for the North Lake Dam Project construction. The project is scheduled to start immediately and is expected to take up to nine months to complete.
After nearly five years of hard work, dedication and searching for funding, construction will finally get underway for the North Lake Dam Project. Colorado Water Association in Gunnison gave the city a majority of the funding to begin construction of the project. “It’s been a long process, but we finally got it done,” former Trinidad Mayor John Rino told Around Trinidad. “The residents deserve this.” Rino thanked many city employees including Trinidad Utilities Superintendent Jim Fernandez, former City Manager Jim Soltis and City Attorney Jerod Beatty. “They worked hard to get this done for the people
of Trinidad. We thank them and everyone else who helped get this done.” The process began with the city requesting bids on the construction of the project, with Sun Construction coming in with the lowest bid of around $979,000. Councilman Jim Toupal flew to Washington, D.C. to meet with former Colorado Congressman John Salazar to try to acquire funding for the construction of the project. Because of the downward spin of the economy, there was no funding or federal grants to place the project under the Colorado Water Bill Act. Project costs were initially estimated at $1.8 million, including over $800,000 in engineering fees for the re-construction of the dam to stop the leaks according to Fernandez. The original plan also had the city borrowing the sum of the money at around 4 percent on the interest. Beginning in April, Fernandez, the city attorney, and other city staff began working on getting money from the Colorado Water Association. The city requested $776,000 from the CWA, then instead of borrowing the money the
city would take about $355,000 out of the $4 million Water Reserve Fund to pay off the contractor to get this part of the project going. “All of this became a blessing, now we don’t have to borrow any money saving the residents of Trinidad money,” Rino added. “Now we are using only one-third of funding we would have spent if we would have borrowed it. Only one third is being taken out of the Water Reserve Fund not 30 percent, not 40 percent only one third.” The Water Reserve Fund over the years has sold water rights and water to different individuals and businesses helping build the reserve fund for water improvement projects just like the North Lake Dam Project. “This project is going to help protect our water, the upkeep and our domestic water use,” Fernandez said. “We needed this, the city really needed this and I’m glad we are close to getting it done.”

FAMILY TIME The Right Start One great way to prepare your child for school is to choose a good Head Start program for them when they are about the age of 3. RMSER is a non-profit organization that offers a wealth of resources to our community. RMSER (Rocky Mountain Service, Employment, Redevelopment) provides employment, training and education to those in need. They offer nutrition, clothing, transportation and even temporary shelter when necessary. In Trinidad they have a wonderful Head Start program that is open to all residents for free but lower income families are enrolled first. Trinidad’s RMSER Head Start is a place full of happy children and caring educators. They have a fun large motor skills development room, a colorful library and numerous cheerfully decorated classrooms. Students sing along together, play games, enjoy story time, have lunch, race around the playground and then take a nap to recover from all the excitement. NEW VIEWS RMSER Head Start from Presleigh Martinez’s Viewpoint
Presleigh Martinez, age 3, has just started school at RMSER Head Start. She loves attending school. Every day she gets to see her grandmother who works at the school. Her favorite things about school are lunch and the playground. The lunch served on Friday was roasted turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and yummy looking dinner rolls. The school has two playgrounds, one smaller for tiny tots and a larger gym for the older children.
EDUCATION Holy Trinity Academy - The Little School That Could Small in numbers, big in academics, HTA continues to give students a great education. The small faith-based school moves forward in a positive direction and gives Trinidad and Las Animas County residents a great educational alternative. Students receive personalized attention, the class sizes are small class, the student body is diverse and the staff is friendly and well qualified. Holy Trinity Academy is now located at 613 Prospect Street in the old Zion Lutheran Parish, Samuels Building on the Trinidad State Jr. College campus. This school year HTA enrollment is up with 30-40 students attending. “Home, faith, learning and community are the basic principals Holy Trinity Academy is founded on,” HTA teacher and long time staff member Andrea Jimenez told Around Trinidad. “We are a private, faith-based school for students from kindergarten through the 12th grades with small class sizes and a fantastic high school-prep curriculum. We are a great alternative for your child’s education.” Jimenez added, “A lot of our graduates had already completed many college courses meeting numerous college requirements when they received their diplomas.” HTA Academy was founded after Trinidad Catholic Schools closed in 2004. HTA has a college program in partnership with Trinidad State Jr. College that offers AP, Honors and IB courses for their high school students. HTA
has an average ACT score of 20.5, a 90 percent graduation rate and an 82 percent college entrance rate upon graduation. This private school accepts students of all faiths according to Jimenez. “We don’t discriminate on the basis of race, color, faith, or creed.” HTA’s educational values include Christian principles of respecting yourself and others with the goal of educating the whole person in cooperation with home, church, and community. This helps foster emotional and intellectual skills needed to become positive contributors to society. All students are required to attend Christian services on Friday mornings, “We work with a number of ministers from local parishes to bring our students a holistic image of Christianity with respect for our varied faiths,” Jimenez added. “Yes many of our students are Catholic, but if not that’s fine, you don’t have to be, we are all God’s children and respect everyone’s views.” HTA continues to gain strong support from alumni including Trinidad Catholic and Holy Trinity Schools. HTA is a 501cC3 non-profit organization that continues to move forward with the help of contributions.
