Tellico Area’s Premier In-Home Decorating Service

P

erhaps the only thing potentially more challenging than decorating your new home or redecorating your existing home is the selection of an interior designer. “A great interior designer possesses extraordinary listening skills,” replied Sandy Kozar, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, when asked what she felt was the single most important characteristic of a successful interior designer. Sandy went on to say that a great interior designer is also a great facilitator. “Your designer will ask a multitude of questions about you, your family and lifestyle, how you envision your home being used now and in the future, your personal preferences and individual tastes. And you should always be made to feel that you are a welcomed and integral part of the design team. Your completed design should be a reflection of who you are, and not your designer.” Sandy, an award-winning and professionally trained designer, and her multi-talented design group have been featured on HGTV as a Pro Network Designer, Best of Houzz three years in a row for customer service, and Dream Room Winner. Well known and respected throughout the Greater Knoxville area for her creative planning and design of both residential and commercial spaces, Sandy’s designs

are featured in the popular “The Kitchen Bible” book by Barbara Ballinger, “Love Your Home,” a newly published book by Carol Donayre-Bugg, and is a frequent contributor to “Everything Knoxville” and “East Tennessee’s Mountain Views.” Readers may also be familiar with Sandy’s work from her multiple Knoxville Parade of Homes entries and local designer Home & Garden tours. Sandy and her team have won multiple awards for their designs in an International Dream Zoom competition. In this month’s issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are excited to share with you, our recent interview with Sandy. ETMV: Sandy, what would you say sets you and your design team apart from your peers? Sandy: As degreed professional designers,

our team possesses both the education and experience required to design beautiful and functional spaces for our clients. We typically do not sell design hours, focusing instead on the quality of the products and services each client desires in order to provide them with the greatest impact for their individual budget. This unique approach allows us to spend the time necessary to design a complete and beautiful design for our clients and not be focused on the clock. We can offer our clients a curated collection of tried and true manufactured case goods, upholstery, custom window treatments, accessories, art, and more, with access nationally and internationally. We provide good, better, best, and even luxury lines for our clients with classics alongside all of the latest trends for today’s lifestyles. Clients also appreciate that we offer a complimentary

consultation to all potential new clients, including virtual consultations, which are a great opportunity to discover a little bit more about how we work. Our website SandyKozar.DecoratingDen.com has tons of information including photos of our work and how we work. ETMV: What is included in your complimentary consultation? Sandy: We tour the home with the homeowners and conduct a detailed question and answer period in order to understand what the client is looking for and considerations to include in the recommended design of their home. We like to know their personality, their needs, their likes, and dislikes so we can custom create their design to be one-of-a-kind and unique for them. We also help establish Continued on page 2A ...

the homeowner’s budget to determine the project’s scope, after which we schedule the design appointment and start making the magic happen for the client. ETMV: How long does it take for the “magic,” as you have described it, to happen? Sandy: If you truly want a beautiful room, it takes time, but it’s always worth the wait. After the initial consultation, it takes five to ten business days to create a design to present to the homeowners. Our comprehensive design plans include three-dimensional space plans, renderings, and elevations, as well as finish and fabric samples, customized for each project. Once the client makes a decision, we then order the selections, tracking all orders, updating the client on the status of their order, inspecting all as it arrives, scheduling our installer, mover and us to be there on every installation. Once everything is received, it is usually installed all in one go, just like you see on HGTV. We find that revealing the transformation this way really makes a statement. ETMV: Share with our readers what you enjoy most about interior design. Sandy: We truly enjoy the opportunity to exercise our creative skills, but our real passion is to involve our clients in this creative and transformative process. It’s difficult to describe how this energizes us. The opportunity to create something tangible from our clients’ dreams, wishes, personal tastes, preferences, and lifestyles is more rewarding than you can imagine. Even more rewarding are the personal friendships that have resulted from our close working relationships with our clients. We have truly been blessed with all of our new friends. ETMV: Sandy, how do your virtual consultations work? Sandy: Recently, we have seen a growing reliance on technology in the workplace. It has been shown to make more productive use of our clients’ time

and provides healthy safeguards as well. Everyone has a computer, so by using existing online apps, we can conduct a virtual consultation in much the same way as we would conduct an in-person consultation. And if you’re new to this type of technology, we are available to coach you and answer any question you might have. It’s easier than you might have imagined. Most of our clients have found working virtually both educational as well as exciting. ETMV: I was going to ask you to describe a typical client experience, but what if we share with our readers a recent interview we conducted with one of your clients? Sandy: In fact, that would be great. Eric and Melissa are a wonderful couple that we had the privilege of working with recently. ETMV: Melissa, what inspired you and Eric to retire to East Tennessee in 2019 after operating a small business after 40 years? Melissa: After visiting this area, we fell in love with the mountains, the lakes, the way of life and the people! We feel very blessed to live in this special place. ETMV: How did you learn about Decorating Den Interiors? Melissa: After buying our home, we decided to update the kitchen. Our kitchen designer told us about Sandy Kozar and Rachael Sheridan and recommended them highly. We decided to use Sandy because she was highly recommended and after meeting her and Rachael and checking out their prior projects, we felt very comfortable with them and knew that they would do a great job. Another consideration was that they brought everything to us and made the entire process easy.” ETMV: Describe the process. Melissa: They measured the rooms we wanted to furnish which included the foyer, the dining room, the open main living/kitchen/dining area, and the guest

bedroom. They designed different furniture layouts to choose from (with a computer layout of the room). For the main open living area, they brought pictures of furniture to choose from, fabric samples, and area rug choices. They also helped us with window coverings, draperies and custom bedding for the master bedroom and guest bedroom. And they also incorporated the artwork and things that we wanted to keep in the final design. When the furniture came in, they provided movers to not only move the new furniture in, but to move the old furniture to different rooms downstairs. They handled everything down to inserting light bulbs in the lamps. In the end, it was our vision because they listened to what we wanted and presented choices that we made. It was a positive experience from start to finish. We are happy with every single purchase and the overall look is exactly what we wanted. ETMV: And would you recommend Decorating Den Interiors to others?

Melissa: We highly recommend Sandy and Rachael from Decorating Den Interiors! Sandy: Eric and Melissa were absolutely wonderful. Their experience is typical of the experiences of all of our clients, and soon to be friends, whether you’re decorating a single room or your entire home. ETMV: Sandy, what is the best way for a respective client to reach out to you? Sandy: I suggest they first visit our website SandyKozar.DecoratingDen.com to view our portfolio and read “How We Work.” From there give us a call and we will discuss your project and schedule your complimentary consultation. ETMV: Sandy, thank you for this opportunity to help our readers discover the Decorating Den Interiors – Kozar Design Team Difference. Sandy: Thank you. New Year

5+ Classic/Designer Shelves. License #10800030 EXP 1/31/2021.

New Projects for your Kitchen or Bath!

W

ith the New Year comes inspiration to tackle some projects around the house. Although you may have dreams of gutting your kitchen or renovating the bathroom, these big jobs are costly and timeconsuming. Instead, consider taking on smaller projects that will give you the best bang for your buck. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity. 1. Organize and better utilize your pantry. Throughout the year, you probably accumulate all sorts of things in your pantry. By removing the contents and throwing away expired items you can start with a clean slate. Consider installing pull-out shelving to better access your items. Hard to reach items will be at your fingertips, and you

will increase your storage capacity. 2. Create usable storage space in your bathroom cabinet. Bath products, hair products, and cleaning solutions may be taking up all the space under your bathroom sink, leaving you no room for essentials like toilet paper and tissues. With a two-tiered pull-out shelving system, you can maximize your storage and easily find what you need. 3. Declutter and find more space for your pots and pans. Are you frustrated with the way you store your pots and pans? Most people get frustrated looking in their cabinets for the right size pot and matching lid. With pullout shelving, you can easily arrange your pots, pans, and lids so you can access them quickly when cooking.

4. Make better use of corner cabinets. Most kitchens have a corner cabinet that has dead space that is often hard to access. With a unique, pull-out solution for corner cabinets, you can add more storage space in your kitchen. It’s a cost-effective way to use the space you already have without adding to the footprint of your kitchen.

You may not be able to redesign your whole kitchen, bathroom, or pantry at this time, but you can ease your frustration by working on smaller projects that will have lasting impacts throughout the New Year! ShelfGenie® 865-409-1197 www.shelfgenie.com

Say Hello to Your New Smile

“I

believe that I may have a rare concept regarding the dental profession,” said Billymac, a small business owner that provides services to area telecommunication and data entry businesses. “As a child, I was raised to perform those personal dental hygiene steps every day. However, being the last of nine children, the personal attention to some of those tasks was not watched as close as maybe they should have been. As a result of this neglect, my teeth suffered. “My personal attention to my teeth came much later in life when I sought those that could help me have and keep a better appearance and longer lasting, healthy smile,” continued Billymac. “I would cover my natural smile, because I realized it was from neglect. Also, the expense to improve my smile was always a major factor. After years of visiting a variety of dental providers, I finally found the level of dental care I always sought at Heritage Family Dentistry when my dentist retired. Heritage Family Dentistry was committed to helping me achieve the new smile I desired. “At an age of 61, I really enjoy the compliments from others that my new smile brings,” said Billymac. “One of the best things that has happened to me is my renewed self-confidence and the new doors of opportunity that have opened up to me thanks to Heritage Family Dentistry. I love their professionalism as well. “I would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone, particularly if you enjoy smiling and laughing, which is contagious and begins the moment you enter their office and you meet Ms. Brandy.” Heritage Family Dentistry offers a full line of advanced dental services and procedures including: » Family Friendly Care » Implant Dentistry » Crowns & Bridges » Cosmetic Dentistry

~ COVID Fatigue ~

s we turn the page on the year 2020, there are none among us that have not experienced COVID Fatigue at some level. Some of us have had the challenges of guiding a small business through The COVID; some know of no one with The COVID, while others have been directly impacted by having The COVID. No matter which category you personally fall into, we all have experienced what has come to be known

as COVID Fatigue. As the promise of a successful vaccine is nearly a reality, many are choosing to view The COVID as waning rather than waxing. That said, positive case numbers have continued to rise during the cold and flu season, and continues to be a cause of concern for some. Salons in the State of Tennessee are still urged to adhere to the ‘Tennessee Promise’, which states that

businesses will do their best to provide a safe work environment for its employees and safely serve their customers. As we continue to safely provide close contact services Brian K. Whitehead to our guests, COVID Managing Partner Fatigue is clearly evident. The Village Salon People have tired of talking about The The Village Salon COVID; people have tired of 222 Village Square being tested for The COVID; in Tellico Village people have tired of the 865-458-9332 personal protection protocols thevillagesalon@aol.com for The COVID; and most of all people have tired OF The COVID. At the time of the deadline for this column, The Village Salon has NOT had a case of The COVID among its 21 Teammates. We are blessed beyond words, and truly thankful for all the hard work by our staff and guests which has made this a possibility. So, as we all deal with our own level of COVID Fatigue, let’s be optimistic, and look at the glass as being half full, and being closer to the end of The COVID than the beginning. From our Salon Family to yours, may you have a safe, blessed, and Happy New Year!

020 gave us the good, the bad, and the ugly, and we’re all excited and ready to take on 2021! In this new year, you might be contemplating some New Year’s Resolutions, such as staying on top of your housework, spending more time with your family, or hitting the gym to improve your heart health or aid in weight loss. When it comes to creating healthier routines, we all know that drinking more water can help in numerous ways. We at Aqua Clear Water Systems would love to join your team to help you along your journey to keep your New Year’s Resolutions by sharing with you the weight loss benefits of PURE water! Here’s the plan: First, water is a natural appetite suppressant. In a 2014 study by the National Institute of Health, results showed that after 8 weeks, 50 females had a reduction in body mass index, body weight, and body fat after drinking 500mL of water 30 minutes before breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Also, Men’s Health Magazine published an article in August 2020 about how proper hydration levels within the body can help maintain weight and regulate appetite. They recommend sipping on water throughout the day to prevent thirst, which is a sign you’re already dehydrated. Second, water intake increases calorie burning. In a study by the National Library of Medicine, 12 people experienced an increase in energy expenditure after drinking 500mL of cold and room temperature water, and they burned 2 to 3 percent more calories in the 90 minutes following the water intake. That’s pretty impressive if you ask us! Third, water is absolutely necessary to burn fat in the body. In order for your body to metabolize stored fat and carbohydrates, water is needed for the process of hydrolysis, which is the first step in metabolizing fat. This process occurs when water molecules interact with triglycerides (fats) to create fatty acids and glycerol, thus aiding in dropping those last few inches from your waist. Who knew how important PURE water was to your goal for a healthier life? To take advantage of these fantastic healthier living benefits, filtered water is a must, and that’s why we want to join your team! Kinetico Water Systems remove harmful chemicals, metals, and sediments from your water, which is essential to reaching your health goals. It also promotes good gut and skin health as well as improves your digestion and hydration levels, according to the National Institute of Health in a 2010 study. We offer drinking water systems, whole-home filtration systems, commercial-grade equipment, and more; we also customize our equipment to fit your needs. So, don’t hesitate on improving your health and losing those last few stubborn pounds! Let us help you today by giving us a call at 865-986-4234 or texting us, anytime, at 865-816-7061. Conquer those weight loss goals in 2021 with Aqua Clear Water Systems cheering you on! Aqua Clear Water Systems 1767 Kevin Lane Lenoir City, TN 37772 865-234-1970 www.aquaclearws.com

Animal and Human Pollution Entering the Tellico Reservoir

A

By Marilyn Morete, VP WATeR and Chair, Communication/Publicity Committee

ll living creatures give off waste products. Ingested food, air and chemicals are utilized by the body and residue – waste - is released back into the environment. All human and animal waste residue includes E. coli and other bacteria, phosphorus and nitrogen. E. coli is a major concern as some strains can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, respiratory illness and pneumonia. Unless controlled and managed, these pollutants negatively impact Tellico Lake, creeks within the watershed and all those who recreate in those bodies of water. One goal of the Watershed Association of the Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) is to protect and improve the quality of water in Tellico Lake and throughout the watershed of the lake. This includes attempting to reduce and eliminate the negative effects of human and animal waste within the Tellico Watershed. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) samples the water of most streams throughout the state on a five-year rotating basis to evaluate and classify streams for pollution. Results of these analyses have indicated that most creeks within the watershed of Tellico Lake have excess levels of phosphorus, nitrogen and E. coli which caused TDEC to list these streams as impaired water bodies. For the past 20 years, WATeR has worked to reduce and eliminate the negative effects of pollution within the Tellico Watershed. Because TDEC collects these samples at only one to three sites every five years on each stream, WATeR often collects additional samples for laboratory analysis to address specific issues requiring more resolution at targeted sites of concern. Both TDEC and WATeR sampling programs found that Madisonville’s old and inefficient wastewater treatment plant was discharging a major source of E. coli pollution into Bat Creek and ultimately into Tellico Lake. WATeR’s corrective effort was to work within the judicial system to bring the Madisonville treatment system into compliance by building a new treatment plant. The new plant opened in June of 2018 and was in full compliance with their discharge permit in 2019. This action greatly reduced E. coli, nitrogen and phosphorous from flowing into Tellico Lake via Bat Creek at the southern end of Tellico Village. A second source of E. coli, phosphorus and nitrogen in the lake is animal waste from unrestrained cattle, wild animals and pets defecating in or next to area creeks and Tellico Lake, and from failing septic tanks. WATeR’s corrective action to minimize this waste has been to recruit, encourage and assist local agencies to work with farmers to improve their best management practices with the goal of “delisting” these creeks meaning that they meet the state’s criteria as creeks free of pollution. WATeR partners with and provides data and analysis from its water sampling projects as well as general technical consulting services to the following agencies: UT’s Agricultural Extension Service, County Soil Conservation Districts and NRCS officials. These agencies have received and are managing over $1,400,000 in matching grants from the Federal Government. The money flows directly to farmers in Blount, Loudon and Monroe counties and supports their acquisition of knowledge and skills in best farming practices as-well-as paying for construction of fences, crossings, watering stations and riparian buffers to keep cattle out of the streams, increase the health of these animals and improve capital returns to the farmers. Owners of failing septic tanks in these three counties also receive funds to replace or repair them. Working with the Watershed community to change attitudes and well-worn behaviors that cause waste pollution is a slow and difficult task All of us contribute to waste problems and need to learn and be part of improving ways to handle them. It is not “they” that pollute; its “we” who pollute! And “we” doing our small part, will maintain our pristine lake water and improve our environment. A future article by WATeR will focus on sources of phosphorus and nitrogen pollution from chemical and organic fertilizers applied to residential lawns, golf courses and agricultural operations. WATeR is an all-volunteer not-for-profit organization. To learn more, visit its web site at www.Tellicowater.org or email WATeR at Tellicowater@aol.com.

THE WALLS CAME TUMBLING DOWN

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, January, 2021

L

ast year, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church purchased the building they had been occupying as renters for the past 10 years. The congregation had already begun to envision how to best use the space to fulfill our mission as a Christian community sharing God’s love with the world. Once plans were created and submitted, all the permits received and the ok was given, construction crews began their work. Walls did come tumbling down as bathrooms were remodeled, the office of the Pastor and Secretary were moved to a more suitable location in the building and a conference area was created. Now on to the current phase which consists of creating a new, larger fellowship/ meeting area. Once the Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed, we plan to be able to offer the space for community functions. The sanctuary remains as a quietly reverent space which we share with Click Funeral Home and Cremations Tellico Village Chapel. Join us for worship online on Sunday mornings at 9 AM. A Zoom Bible study resumes this month to which you are welcome to join. Visit our web site at shepherdofthelaketn.org for more

information about the congregation, news and activities. Call the church office 865816-4756 for online registration information. In the words of a beloved hymn written by John S. B. Monsell in 1863, we are gratefully “On our Way Rejoicing” as we move forward into 2021 and beyond. On our way rejoicing, As we homeward move, Unto God the Father Joyful songs we sing; Unto God the Saviour Thankful hearts we bring; Unto God the Spirit Bow we and adore, On our way rejoicing Now and evermore. On our way rejoicing, As we homeward move, Hearken to our praises, O Thou God of love! Hearken to our praises, O blest God of love! Organizations Learn by Partnering Together 1 + 1 = 4

T

wo Monroe County organizations have recently partnered to impact the lives of local children. The Knights of Columbus associated with St. Joseph the Worker Catholic church and The Good Shepherd Center, both located in Madisonville, TN recently combined resources to purchase winter clothing for children at seven area primary schools. They distributed 120 coats, 144 pairs of sweatpants and 288 pairs of winter socks. In the past, each organization had provided similar programs but with fewer results. Frank Urban, Community Director, of the Knights of Columbus stated, “Working alone, we normally would reach one or two schools per year but by working alongside The Good Shepherd and sharing resources we had a much greater impact.” The organization coordinated with the school counselors to ensure the clothing was distributed appropriately. The organizations jointly purchased

the clothing from Walmart and Crescent Socks located in Niota, TN, both organizations were very cooperative. The Good Shepherd Center provides free clothing year round but wanted to increase their efforts this year because of the COVID-19 economic impact. The clothing was delivered prior to the recent cold weather that East Tennessee experiences. “This type of partnering is a critical success factor in our ability to achieve our mission at The Good Shepherd. We work with many local organizations including Walmart, Little Caesars Pizza, FLEC, United Way of Monroe County and many area churches to provide food and our additional services. We expect to increase our network of local partners in 2021,” stated Tina Smith, Executive Director at The Good Shepherd. Normally The Good Shepherd does a fund drive to provide shoes for children in the late summer in preparation for the school season but because of the virus it was

Our winter merchandise is now 25% off, and on Saturday, January 16th, at 10:00 am, every piece that’s left goes to 50% off! There are a few things to note that will be different about our semi-annual sale this year, due to the on-going Covid pandemic. Masks will be required in the store on January 16th (for your safety, and for the safety of our staff!), and all clothing, as well as the dressing rooms, will be sprayed down with an antibacterial spray after each use. We also ask that you please stay home if you are experiencing any Covid symptoms. Thank you in advance for you cooperation and understanding – we simply want all of our customers to be able to shop our sem-annual safely! In addition to the 50% off winter merchandise, our “La Sale Boutique” (the big room in the rear of the store) goes to 70% off! Thus, the clearing out begins as we ready ourselves and the store for a brand new season! Spring fashions have been ordered, new, fresh looks are arriving and the holiday decorations have been put away for another year. We’ll look forward to seeing so many of our customers and friends during our unbelievable sale days! Plan to spend some time with us as you visit with friends and neighbors, every arm loaded with bargains and having the time of our lives! What a fun day during a not-so-fun month... it’s an event you won’t want to miss! At The Lily Pad, we reflect on how blessed we have been this year to again be a part of your lives. We truly appreciate the vote of confidence you place in us to be your fashion headquarters! Our most sincere wishes from the entire Lily Pad staff for a happy and healthy 2021!

THE LIBRARY CORNER

As we welcome in 2021 and hope that the pandemic will be controlled in 2021, the Public Library at Tellico Village invites you to share our vision to continue to be the center for lifelong learning, providing access to the information that will fulfill personal growth, cultural enrichment and knowledge in all fields of interest. There is a new Board of Directors of the Friends of the Library (FOTVL) effective January 1: Elaine Nagelson has moved from her position as Vice President to President and Sandi Jorgensen has taken on the Vice President role. New persons to the Board include Colleen Meese as Secretary and Susan Stalgaitis and Edie Volk as Members at Large. Other Board members are continuing their tenure. Our Friends membership has steadily been increasing and we now have 838 Friends. Please join us, annual membership is $30 for an individual membership and $50 for a family membership. You can join online using the application under the FRIENDS tab at the Library website. Ongoing programs in the Library are still on hiatus

JANUARY 2021

until we can start planning again for classes, workshops and lectures. We hope to see our First Friday Authors (local authors) as well as our series on Tennessee Bluebirds, and those informational sessions on retirement, taxes and legal needs of seniors being offered by summer. Also our information sessions on health issues we face, as well as computer based classes and Tennessee history have been popular and we want to get them up and running as soon as possible. Again, go to our website to see offerings Fundraising in 2020 was an area where the Library was successful due to “out-of-the box” thinking and creativity on the part of many FOTVL volunteers. In place of our large annual book sale in April, the book sale team tried something different – mini book sales focusing on particular genres of literature. To nobody’s surprise, these 4 mini book sales were a great hit. Mystery Madness was the first book sale in August, followed by Truth is Stranger than Fiction in September, History Repeats Itself in October and in December the Holiday Book Sale. Of course like so many ideas these mini book sales could not have been successful without the donations and support

from readers throughout Loudon and Monroe Counties, as well as our wonderful volunteers. We will be continuing these mini book sales through 2021. The FOTVL event committee is already hard at work exploring new ideas for fundraisers while continuing to plan those events we all enjoy. In 2020 “genre based teas” were planned, the first was to occur during the summer with a “From Jane Austen to Downtown Abbey” theme that included a three course meal and trivia related to English genre. While the tea was cancelled it didn’t dampen the spirits of the “tea committee”. They are already planning for the 2021 teas. Other fundraisers in the planning stage include: a silent auction, a road rally, ladies golf tournament scheduled for June 5 and the 4 B’s (Beer, Bluegrass, BBQ and Books). Library hours are Monday – Friday from 9:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 9:00 to 12:00. Drop by and see us. New Year’s Resolution: Organize Your Closet

14A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, January, 2021

J

anuary finds the holiday celebrations fading away and normalcy returning to our lives. This month also means its time to take on the challenge of some New Year’s resolutions. One of the most common New Year’s resolutions is to get more organized, and often that starts with your closets. However, organizing your closets sometimes feels more like a dream than a real possibility, and sometimes we try to convince ourselves that no one sees our closets but our family. Research shows that people waste as much as 50 minutes a day -- almost 8 days a year -- looking for things they own, but can’t find. So it pays to be organized because lost time is one commodity we can’t get back. Just a little time to organize can make even the most chaotic of spaces relatively manageable. The most important thing is to just start! Make sure to choose a day when you’re full of energy as you focus on dividing all your clothes and accessories into one of these three categories: • Throw it Away Is it torn, broken, stained or very, very old (but not vintage) … well, it’s probably time to let it go. • Donate Clothes that do not fit or you haven’t worn in a year or more? Do a good deed and help someone in need. • Keep Clothing and accessories that are in good shape and you’ve worn in the past year. While your closet is empty, clean the floor and shelves. Closets get dusty too. Now separate your clothing by item

type, shirts with shirts and pants with pants. Clothes that you wear often go in the easy-to-reach areas of your closet. Clothes and accessories that you rarely use, including out-of-season clothing, should go in the upper part of the closet or corner spaces. Other ways to keep items organized, creating a home for everything, are: • Wool, cashmere, and angora sweaters should be folded to keep their shape • Create tag or labels for the bins or boxes you use in your closet • Store accessories you rarely use on the top shelf • Use a storage box with a handle for items like hats or scarves and place it on a shelf • Standardize your hangers. It really does make a difference! Most of all, stay organized. You can keep everything in order by spending just 15 minutes a day decluttering. An organized home reduces stress by also decluttering your mind so you can focus on the important things in life! If your task seems overwhelming, why not ask the local design experts at Tailored Living for some friendly, professional help? Tailored Living has earned a well deserved reputation for taking home organization to a new level in every area of your home or garage. MCFA Pets of the Month W

e are affectionately known as the “U Gang”. Our foster mom says we are the best litter she has ever fostered. We love hanging out with our extended foster family. We are charming little DSH 13-week-old kitties that are always happy and friendly whether playing with the dogs, other cats or older children that live in the house with us. We haven’t hung out with younger children yet. Of course, we each have our own personality. UMI – I am the cute little girl with the white blaze down my nose. My curious personality keeps me on the move as much as possible, but I am still a lover. UKELELE - My little female black nose is always looking to see what is happening. I might be considered nosy. My independent streak is evident until I am looking for rubs and pets. Then I am a sweetie. UDON – As the male of the group one would assume I am the most independent. Not so! My favorite things in life are cuddling, snuggling, and being held. When you pay attention to me my purr is as loud as a big block engine. I find that makes it easy to keep right on being petted. DOMINO – My white with brown tabby markings make me a very handsome 16-week-old DSH boy. A soft cushiony perch by a window would suit my quiet, thoughtful personality. Analyzing the world around me is one of my favorite pastimes. DORY – I am a delightful 16-week-old minx of a kitty,

a torbie DSH female rascal. Upon first meeting me, I may seem a little haughty, but that is to keep you in the palm of my paw and steal your heart. Soft pets, head scratches and fuzzy toys will win you my heart. MACKA is a 4 year-old Boxer Mix and she weighs 36 pounds. Macka is a friendly girl and will lean against you while you pet her. She is heartworm positive, but is being treated. Once the heartworms have been cleared up, Macka will just need normal preventative treatments. Loyalty, affection, intelligence, work ethic, and good looks: Boxers are the whole doggy package. Bright and alert, sometimes silly, but always courageous, the Boxer has been among America’s most popular dog breeds for a very long time. RICK is a beautiful 42 pound mixed-breed dog. He is calm and compliant. Rick loves playing with toys. He is neutered and ready for his forever home. He is an escape artist so he requires a fenced-in yard with constant attention. In accordance with the Monroe County Government schedule, and due to the rising numbers of positive cases of COVID-19, the Shelter closed to the public on December 23, 2020 and reopens January 5, 2021, then it returns to the regular hours of Tuesday - Friday 11:00 - 4:30 and Saturday 11:00 - 2:00. Shelter staff will be providing for the daily care of the dogs and cats, as always, during the closure. Email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call

423-442-1015 for more information and to schedule a meet & greet. Out of an abundance of caution to protect our customers and volunteers, the MCFA Thrift Store will be closed for the foreseeable future. The Facebook page is still up and running and is frequently updated. New items arrive all the time. Check the FB page to see what bargains you will find! The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Wal-Mart) and is open Tuesday-Friday from 11-4:30 and Saturdays from 11-2. Never Expose Your Boat to the Elements Again T

By Tom Irmen

hat’s one New Year’s Resolution that is easier to keep than you might have imagined. In fact, it’s a 2020 resolution that we only just achieved.. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks, that are protected by Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. But it wasn’t until multiple boat owners on our community dock in Rarity Bay installed the Touchless Boat Cover that we made the decision to make the investment by redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Previously when we arrived at our dock for a day on the lake, we had to first clear away the cobwebs from the sides of our boat. Then we removed the straps that secured our boat cover and then removed the cover. We shook the cover off to shake off the spiders that remained before folding the cover and placing it in our dock box. We would wash the bird and spider droppings off the cover when we returned. Before we had started to wipe the cobwebs and spider droppings from the now exposed topside areas of our boat, the boat owners in the slip across from ours arrived.

They pressed their key fob, their Touchless Cover was fully raised in 30 seconds or less. They lowered their boat lift, started their outboard engine and were off in 5 minutes or less. On a recent outing on the lake, we pressed our key fob. While our Touchless Cover was rising, we lowered our boat lift. We turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. And yes, we’re using our boat far more than before. And the spiders? I can’t explain it. They’ve mostly disappeared. And our newly detailed boat looks just like it did on the showroom floor in 2007. Thinking about protecting that investment you’ve made in your boat in the New Year? Call Patrick Boring today and cross one New Year’s Resolution off your list. Patrick and his team can safely install your new Touchless Cover all year round. Your 2021 New Year’s Resolution Begin Enjoying Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces This Spring

omeowners everywhere are creating popular outdoor “rooms”. They include porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently installed grills, refrigerators, work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. But unfortunately, flying and biting insects can prevent you from fully enjoying your new outdoor living spaces. The solution is simple - retractable screens. When combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative retractable screen solutions enhance and promote your outdoor living experience by providing both shade and protection from annoying, biting insects, allowing your family and friends to enjoy more time out of doors. Large, motorized screens blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s exterior esthetics, as your screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the available retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes that help blend your screens with your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. Why not make a New Year’s resolution this year that your entire family can enjoy? Create a season of memorable out-of-door living experiences with family and friends in 2021 with retractable screens from Screens of East Tennessee. THE DUAL PATHS OF TAX PLANNING & SMART INVESTMENT STRATEGIES INTERSECT AT MARSH WEALTH MANAGEMENT

A New Twist on IRA Tax Planning T By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

he SECURE Act created a new twist in tax-planning when it took away the ability of most non-spouse beneficiaries to stretch their taxable inheritance out over their lifetime and instead forces them to take the taxable distribution within 10 years, pushing them into higher brackets. Let’s say there is a married couple, each with their own $1 million IRA, and they’ve named their spouse as primary beneficiary and their kids as contingent beneficiaries. Under the old rules, it was a no-brainer for the surviving spouse to take ownership of all the IRA money, withdraw their Required Distribution and then eventually pass the accounts to their kids at the second spouse’s passing, who then stretched their inheritance out. But under the SECURE Act, this strategy doesn’t always work so well. In the same scenario, if the

surviving spouse takes ownership creating a $2 million IRA and then ultimately passes it to the kids, the kids have 10 years in which to withdraw the $2 million and pay tax on it. Not such a great tax answer – it could easily be taxed in the 32% bracket and there goes $600k to Uncle Sam. Here’s an alternative worth considering: it’s called a disclaimer. What happens in this scenario is that the surviving spouse “disclaims” or formally refuses some or all of the deceased spouse’s IRA and lets it pass to the kids as contingent beneficiaries. So now they have the 10 years to stretch out one parent’s IRA, and then when the second parent passes, they’ll have another 10 year period to stretch out the second parent’s IRA. A much better tax answer. Planning has to be done ahead of time: 1. Spouses have to be named primary beneficia-

ries, and kids have to be named as contingent beneficiaries on the IRA beneficiary form. Your will is irrelevant – it has to be the IRA form. 2. Touch nothing after death! In order to execute a disclaimer, the beneficiaries cannot have “accepted” the property by taking distributions or transferring the account. 3. The disclaimer is a legal document that is executed by a qualified estate planning attorney. It is not a simple form from the IRA custodian. 4. The deadline for delivering the disclaimer to the custodian is 9 months from the date of death.

The SECURE Act requires us to take a fresh look at the old tax strategies – this scenario needs to be evaluated in a case by case basis. This is exactly the type of tax planning we provide to our wealth management clients included in their asset management fees. As fiduciaries, we believe that investment and tax strategies are intertwined, and we use our expertise as Certified Financial Planners and CPAs to proactively look for tax minimization opportunities for our clients. How Long To Keep Tax Returns and Records?

W

e are often asked the question; how long should I keep copies of my tax return and records? When can I toss out my old tax returns? The answer depends on the type of documents and records you have. You should keep copies of your tax returns for at least three years. This is the amount of time the IRS can audit or question items on your tax returns. It is also the period of time you can file an amended return to make changes to your original return. The IRS can go back up to six years if you underreport more than 25% of your income. If they can prove fraud, there is no limitation. Before you automatically toss out all tax returns and records after three years, you should review the documents to see if some of them should be retained for a longer period. For example, if you have purchased real estate during those three years you should retain those records for at least three years after you have disposed of them. If you sell the property, or if it is used in an income producing activity such as rental property, you may have to prove how much you have invested in the property. This would include original purchase price plus major improvements. It might be beneficial to keep these records in a separate file. You can toss the file that contains the records you can dispose of and retain the file containing records that should be kept for a longer period. This would also be true of securities transactions. Be sure and keep your purchase records for stocks and bonds.

Submitted by WarrenJackson

When you dispose of them you will need to include the purchase date and costs on your tax return in the year of sale. Be aware of stock splits, reinvested dividends as well as non-taxable distributions that could impact your basis. If you have inherited property, you will need to know the date of death and the date-of-death fair market value when you dispose of the inherited property. If you receive the property by gift, you will need to know the donor’s cost. This information is likely to be easier obtained at the time of inheritance or gift, as opposed to the time you dispose of the property. For example, if your parents transfer their property to you by gift, your tax basis is equal to their cost basis. That is what they have invested in the property. If the property is worth $200,000 on the date transferred, this value is used for gift tax purposes. If they had purchased the property and made improvements to it during the time they owned it totaling $90,000, your tax basis in the property is $90,000. When you dispose of it, you will be taxed on the gain realized, using a cost basis of $90,000. If you wait several years to sell it, it may be difficult to establish how much they had invested in the property. It may be after their death and you will have challenges establishing how much they had invested over the years. In some cases, they may have inherited the property originally and you may have to go back and determine the fair market of the property at the time they inherited it. Such details may be difficult to determine at the

time you dispose of it. Here are some other suggested document retention schedules: Banks statements and cancelled checks - 7 years Contracts and leases - 7 years after expiration Deeds, mortgages & bills of sale - Permanently Insurance policies - 3 years after expiration Payroll records - 7 years Sales records - 7 years Time books - 7 years Invoices for monthly bills - 3 years Employee personnel records - 7 years after termination Minutes, by-laws and corporate charter - Permanently Financial statements - Permanently Invoices to customers and from vendors - 3 – 7 years Petty cash vouchers - 3 years This list is only a suggested period of time to keep your valuable records. There may be reasons to keep your records for longer periods of time. You should keep your records in a safe and secure place. If you place some of your documents in a bank lock box, you should provide for someone to have access to your box in the event of your death. This can insure they are available in a timely manner, but expect delays in getting access as banks have procedures to follow when lock boxes are accessed after death. For this reason, you may wish to keep your will in a secure place, other than a bank lock box.

GF Environmental Group Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida, has a 35+ year history of providing the world with the safest air, water and food without the use of chemicals. RGF manufactures over 500 environmental products on its 9 acre campus, home to over 130,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Perhaps RGF’s most exciting and recent innovations are their REME HALO residential and commercial air purification system that has been shown to inactivate the SARSCoV-2 virus, commonly known as the coronavirus 2019 or COVID-19. Based on a study which commenced in March 2020, and overseen by Dr. James Marsden, Executive Director of Science and Technology at RGF, Dr. Marsden stated that “the study results show the REME HALO to be effective in combating the COVID-19 virus and a valuable solution to immediately improve the Indoor Air Quality of residential and commercial spaces and protect occupants against exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” The independent third-party study focused on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 using RGF’s proprietary REME HALO air purification system with PHI-Cell technology. The testing was performed at the Innovative Bioanalysis Laboratories in Cypress, California. The virus was nebulized into a large 1,280 cubic foot chamber representing a real-world, air-conditioned office or home. With the REME HALO operating inside the chamber, the virus was reduced on contact resulting in a 99.9% reduction of the virus within the simulated real-world space, reducing the risk of person-to-person infection by respiratory particles and aerosols. This is great news. But the even better news is that you can have the REME HALO air purification system installed in your home today for probably less than you might have imagined. RGF strongly recommends that their REME HALO system only be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. In East Tennessee and the Tellico Lake area the REME HALO air purification system is installed by Gent Heating & Cooling. Gent Heating & Cooling owner, Shane Gent, and his team of highly trained technicians, have earned a well deserved reputation for quality workmanship, professionalism and fairness for over 20+ years. January In the Garden

W

by

Lisa Grugin

ell, we have survived 2020! It was certainly an interesting year for small businesses, gardeners and humans in general. I don’t know about you, but I am crossing my fingers that 2021 will be less dramatic. One of the things that many of you learned is that working in your yard can be very therapeutic. There is something about getting your hands in the dirt and growing things that is soothing to the soul. Yes, I know that it can also lead to swear words and soreness, but there is something about connecting with the Earth that is healing. While I know that most of you won’t be doing a lot of gardening this month, let’s talk about the things you can do on those occasional days when the sun is shining, and you have to get out of the house. • Unless this is the first time you are reading my articles, you already know that the first thing I am going to tell you is to go outside and walk around! It is so much easier to fix problems if you don’t wait until Spring to get started. Here are the things you need to look for: 1. Check your trees for signs of damage. Look for obvious dead areas, but also look for heavy lichen growth, shelf mushrooms, oozing wounds and/or woodpecker holes. You don’t want to learn about a stressed tree by having it fall on your house! Call an arborist if you have concerns. 2. Next, check your smaller trees and shrubs for signs of damage, insects, and disease. Make notes of what you need to prune, treat, move or remove. You also need to make sure that falling leaves and needles do not get caught inside the plant and build up, because that makes a great place for insects and/or fungal spores to overwinter. 3. Sometimes perennials will heave themselves out of the ground as the temperature fluctuates. If yours do that, gently push them back into the soil. Some may also need to be cut back or mulched

for protection. While you are making notes, annotate any that will need to be moved or divided this year. 4. Do your pansies need to be fertilized? They are heavy feeders, so don’t wait too long between applications. We want them to be healthy and gorgeous this spring! • It is no secret that January is not my favorite month, but it is a great month for planning. Magazines, TV shows and Pinterest are great sources of ideas for your perfect garden. Think about how you use you yard and what you would like to do differently. Do you want an area for a firepit? Would you like a fountain or water feature? Do you want to grow a vegetable garden this year? Add to your list and come see us if you need help. • January is also a good month to prune a few things, but please remember that you are preforming a surgical procedure on a living thing. Don’t just start whacking like some deranged Edward Scissorhands! Don’t cut anything until you educate yourself about what you should or

shouldn’t prune and the correct procedure for doing it. If you are a Crape Murderer, please, please, please stop! Southern Living has a great step-by-step guide on their website, or just call us with any pruning questions. • Why is it that the plants that you least want are the ones that grow best? Weeds just laugh at the cold and keep going. Herbicides don’t usually work when temperatures are low, so that means you must get down and dirty to get rid of them. Dig those suckers up and apply Preen religiously to keep them from returning. • Keep your garden yearnings at bay with a few houseplants that will reward you with clean air. Dust them or rinse them in the sink periodically to keep their pores from getting clogged. You may find that they need less water during the winter months, but the dry air in a home is stressful. Running a humidifier or placing plants in a pebble lined tray of water will help your plants stay happy through the winter. Treat any insects that appear with Insecticidal soap. Mealybugs can be

treated with rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. • If your soil is naked, please dress it with mulch or chopped leaves. Mulch keeps temperatures and moisture levels stable. 3” is adequate, and no volcanoes! Never pile it around the trunk. • I will repeat my monthly plea for the birds: keep feeders and birdbaths clean and full! Don’t allow food to mold in the feeders as this will make the birds sick. If food has molded, clean the feeder well and rinse with a very mild bleach solution, and then again with water. Once it dries, refill with fresh seed. That is all I have for this month. As a reminder, we are closed on Sunday and Monday during January and February. Call or stop by if there is anything we can help you with, and have a safe and happy New Year! ecently Keener Homes completed a major remodel on our home in Rarity Bay, and we could not be more ecstatic. We bought our first home in Tellico Village from the Keeners in 2002 and knew they were the right choice for our major remodel, which involved removing all stucco and replacing with brick and stone; adding a screened-in porch; replacing the deck; adding hardscape and pavers for the driveway, dry below under the deck, outdoor patio with a kitchen L, fire pit, sitting wall, and walkway to the dock; as well as redoing the landscaping. This remodel was just like building a new home. From the initial design to the destruction and construction phases, we could not be more pleased. Kit Keener, his project manager (Derek Miller), and office manager (Krisha Loud) were superb throughout the entire process, making recommendations that greatly enhanced our initial vision for our “Cabin on the Lake” and one that will be a legacy for our family for years to come. Thanks to Kit, Derek, and Krisha for making this our ultimate retirement home and one that the entire family will enjoy for years to come. T

he barns of yesterday are pieces of living history and they still have a story to share. At Knoxville based Plantation Reclaimed, we are dedicated to the preservation of our remaining old growth forests, believing they should be left as a legacy to our future. That’s why all of our unique wood comes from abandoned farms, warehouses and other structures as much as 200 years old. Not only is it environmentally responsible to recycle antique lumber, but the sheer beauty and patina from reclaimed wood just can’t be replicated. Reclaimed wood is the best way to recycle wooden articles from old, unused, dilapidated or just plain neglected barns, warehouses, etc. The recycling of antique lumber leads to a decline in the demand for new wood from our already endangered forests. There is a multitude of ways of using reclaimed wood, most of the times in building portions of new homes. Whether it’s re-building your urban home to give it a rustic feel or building a new home or a country cabin in the woods, nothing can replace the aged feel and color tone of reclaimed wood. Everyone loves the warmth and homey feel that a great hardwood floor provides. Well, at Plantation Reclaimed, we believe that solid wood creates the very best flooring surface. There are various types of woods that will provide character to any area of the home. Tobacco Road is one such type wood, which was used during the 19th and early 20th century. Farmers, primarily tobacco farmers, living in the most fertile valleys of Pennsylvania, used a mixture of wood species to create siding and roof rafters for their barns, where they would dry their harvest. Over time the character of the wood

occurred from weathering and staining. Hence, wood reclaimed from these barns is termed Tobacco Road. The Southern Reclaimed Heart Pine, recognized by its rich yellow tone and the best in grain quality, is an ode to the American manufacturing era. These were the beams found in most of the largest manufacturing mills of this country. The mighty oak tree has provided the planks and beams used to create our symbolic American barns for centuries. Resawn beams from the oldest of these barns are used to create the incredible looking oak hardwood wide planks that will provide your home with the unique feeling of warmth that it deserves. Solid wood mantels provide that much needed character and style to your fireplace. Built with reclaimed wood, these mantels offer an all natural look that will become a featured focal point. Hand-hewn antique mantels are sourced from wood that were aged naturally over decades and centuries as structural timbers. Many still bear the hand-tool marks from when they were cut and shaped. Other rough sawn antique mantels bear the marks of both

early two-man crosscut saws and axes reminiscent of our pioneer past. Our mantels are a living legacy to our early pioneering history and our long tradition of American wood craftsmanship. Our selection of antique barn sidings, which feature rusty nail holes and deep weathered textures, offer you the opportunity to create the look of unparalleled and ageless beauty that simply cannot be matched by any other building material. Planks can be found in various colors and appearances, ranging from grey-brown antique barn siding, to the faded grey barn siding, to the all-naturally faded red barn siding, and finally the faced planed exterior barn siding. Contact us today to see how you can incorporate reclaimed wood products into your home or business. Reclaimed lumber from Plantation Reclaimed will certainly add one-of-akind, unique character to any area of your home! Plantation Reclaimed 865-243-4604 Jenny@PlantationReclaimed.com

What You Can’t See Can Harm You! “Fighting the Invisible Enemy”

e now know that COVID-19 first entered the U.S. much earlier than originally reported. In fact, the virus was detected by the American Red Cross in blood samples in California, Washington and Oregon as early as mid-December 2019. Unlike many of the potential threats we experience in our lives, threats from sources such as viruses and mold can go virtually undetected until we or a loved one begin to experience health related problems. That’s why I launched Bactronix in East Tennessee. Bactronix is rapidly earning a reputation as the nation’s leader in the residential and commercial disinfecting and mold treatment and remediation marketplace and is the first environmentally responsible, disinfecting service designed to eliminate all surface and airborne microbes. Our proprietary Two-Step Bactronizing Process safely and effectively eliminates: • Viruses (Including COVID-19) • Mold • Fungi • Algae • Bacteria • VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds)

All of our Bactronix team members are expertly trained and certified in the use of our advanced technologies and services. Grounded in an eco-responsible platform that is 100% safe for people, plants, and pets, our products and services help home and business owners alike to maintain healthy and sanitary conditions where we live and work. Our exclusive, patented Bactronizing Process uses environmentally responsible, hospital grade, EPA registered disinfectants which are distributed using an advanced electrostatic spray system that cleans, disinfects, and protects surfaces against dangerous bacteria, viruses, mold, mildew and odors, including cigarette smoke. Our state-of-the-art-technology, electrostatic sprayers covers 100% of the surfaces in the treatment area delivering a germ killing solution thoroughly and evenly including impossible to reach areas where microbes migrate and breed. The time required to treat a 1,500 square foot home requires about 3 hours on average. There is no need to vacate your home, although we ask that you not be in the same area as our technician during the Bactronizing Process. Nontoxic, our disinfectants can be applied to food processing equipment and food contact areas. For far less than you might imagine, you can safely treat 100% of the surface areas in your home or business,

including those important hard to reach areas, in far less time than required to disinfect by hand. If you or someone you know has been exposed to COVID-19, or if you have recently purchased a home that was visited by numerous other buyers, call us for the peace of mind you deserve. Bactronix is the first and only Microbial Control Company that is trained to conduct COVID-19 Surface Testing. If you detect unexplained odors at home or work, if you experience chronic coughing or sneezing, or if you can see mold and mildew on surfaces, we encourage you to call us, as harmful biofilm and microorganisms may be the cause. What you can’t see may already be causing you and your loved ones harm. Call Bacrtonix, the Nation’s leader in creating and maintaining a healthier living environment today? We can help you to win the fight against the “Invisible Enemy”. Bactronix of Knoxville 332 Lakeside Plaza Loudon, TN 37774 865-444-6364 scott@Backtronix-Knoxville.com www.bactronix-knoxville.com
