t’s hard to believe the New Year has already come and gone, and 2022 is here. The Christmas decorations are put away, and our homes have returned to their pre-holiday look. With the weather still rainy and dreary, and the temperatures ranging from nippy to downright chilly, we now survey the spaces we frequent the most and realize, with dissatisfaction - we need a change! It can be as simple as adding a new rug to the living room or placing a centerpiece on the dining room table, or it can mean the entire redesign of a room, or even a whole house. Either way, whether small or far reaching, these changes are key to bringing you closer to enjoying the ideal home of your dreams. If you thought you knew your home backwards and forwards before, odds are you’ve come to know it even better post the pandemic lockdowns. Perhaps, like many others, you’ve been working virtually from home since early 2020. Before you knew it, jury-rigged office setups that were supposed to be temporary have

become permanent. Maybe the blurring of boundaries between home and office life has prevented you from getting the decompression and relaxation you need when off the clock. It’s often difficult and frustrating to channel creativity and productivity if your surroundings seem to constantly stunt both. On the flip-side, it is so rewarding to truly make a room or space beautiful. A place that allows you to thrive, rather than just survive, that boosts your mood and provides both style and comfort all in one package. One way or another, your home is an expression of yourself and your current wellbeing.

You share it with your family and friends, experiencing both the highs and lows of life within its walls, and spending so much extra time inside can highlight the interiors that don’t yet live up to your personal vision of comfort and beauty. But how to go about getting the most from your home, making it an accurate representation of your unique tastes and preference? As with most other ventures worth taking, it starts with choosing the right guide. Whether you are redecorating your existing home, or a new one, the greatest challenge starts with choosing the right

interior designer. “A great interior designer possesses extraordinary listening skills,” replied Sandy Kozar, owner of Decorating Den Interiors, when asked what she felt was the single most important characteristic of a successful interior designer. Beyond listening skills, a professional interior designer is also a capable facilitator and communicator. “Your designer will ask a multitude of questions about you, your family and lifestyle, how you envision your home being used now and in the future, and about your personal preferences and individual tastes. And you should always be made to feel that you are a welcomed and integral part of the design team. Your complete design should be a reflection of who you are.” Sandy is an award-winning and professionally trained designer, and her talented design team has been featured on HGTV as a Pro Network Designer, Best of Houzz three years in a row for customer service, and Expertise.com Winner three years in a row. Featured in “The Kitchen Bible” book by Barbara Ballinger, and “Love Your Home,” by Carol DonayreBugg, and an article in Elle Décor, Sandy’s creative planning and design of residential spaces is well-known and respected through the Knoxville area, and she remains a frequent contributor to Everything Knoxville Magazine and East Tennessee’s Mountain Views. Constant and clear communication skills with each client are essential to the team’s success. From the beginning of each project to its conclusion, Sandy’s design team will be with you every step of the way, listening carefully to insure they make your vision a reality, but also keeping you up to date during every step of the process – one of the things Sandy’s team takes very seriously. Whether your goals are to redesign one room at a time, or an entire house, they will work with you to keep your project moving smoothly and efficiently. To kick off this year, we are excited to share our detailed interview with Sandy. MV: Sandy; what would you say sets you and your design team apart from your peers? Sandy: As degreed professional designers, our team possesses the education and experience required to design beautiful and functional spaces for our clients. We typically do not sell design hours, focusing instead on the quality of the products and services each client desires to realize the greatest impact for their budget. This unique approach allows us to spend the time necessary to design complete and beautiful living spaces and not be focused on the clock. We can offer our clients a curated collection of fine furnishings, upholstery, custom window treatments, accessories, art, and more, with access nationally and internationally. We provide good, better, best, and even luxury lines for our clients with classic styling, alongside the latest trends for today’s lifestyles. Clients also appreciate that we offer a

complimentary consultation, including virtual consultations. MV: What is included in your complimentary consultations? Sandy: We know every project presents its own unique set of circumstances. We will take the time necessary to help establish the scope of your project and the style you desire. Don’t worry about the time; our initial design consultation is always complimentary. Our first appointment will typically last about an hour. We ask to start with a 15–20-minute house tour; this allows us to see your style (or discuss a change in style), colors and discuss function of the room(s). We will also talk about any projects you may want to begin immediately, or in the future. Then we will spend a few minutes “getting to know you” asking specific questions and taking measurements to help with the design process. We do not get into deep design work or show product at this appointment, but we are information gathering for our next appointment. The more information we have, the more we can help you. Next, we will review how we work with you, all within your lifestyle, budget, and timing. We will work with you to determine a budget that accomplishes your overall project goals whether it is one room at a time or the entire home. Our extensive variety of products means we can satisfy almost any budget with good, better, best, and luxury line of all products. If you are purchasing product, we do not charge for our design time during the project. Before we leave your home, we will also schedule your

design appointment to keep your project moving efficiently. We can then make the “magic” happen. MV: How long does it take for the “magic” as you have described it, to happen? Sandy: If you truly want a beautiful room, it takes time, but it’s always worth the wait! After your initial consultation, we create a comprehensive design to include three-dimensional space plans, renderings, and elevations, as well as finish and fabric samples, fully customized for each project within two weeks. Once the design is finalized, we place and track all orders, updating our client on the status, inspecting as it arrives, then scheduling our team to be on-site to bring everything together in one visit, just like you see on HGTV. We find that revealing the transformation this way really makes a statement! MV: You mentioned earlier how important good listening skills are for a designer. Can you elaborate? Sandy: Good listening skills are crucial to working with clients. Many people just can’t articulate exactly what they want; they just know what they DON’T want. It’s up to us to not only listen to what the client is saying, but also guide them through the millions of design options to discover their own unique style. It’s like a treasure hunt! MV: Share with our readers what you enjoy most about interior design. Sandy: We genuinely enjoy the opportunity to exercise our creative skills, but our real passion is to involve our clients in this collaborative and transformative process. It’s difficult to describe just how

much this energizes us. The experience of creating something tangible from our clients’ wishes, personal tastes, preferences, and lifestyles is more rewarding than you can imagine. But even more rewarding are the personal friendships that have resulted from our close working relationships with our clients. We have been exceptionally blessed with so many new friends. MV: Sandy, what is the best way for a prospective client to reach out to you? Sandy: I suggest they first visit our website to view our portfolio and read “How We Work” at www.SandyKozar. DecoratingDen.com. Fill out our “contact us” form or give us a call. We always respond within one business day. Whether you just moved in or have lived in your home for years, we are happy to help you turn your design dreams into a reality. Then we schedule your first appointment. Either we call you, or you call us. We will talk together for about 15-20 minutes to learn more about you, your project, and the ideas you have for your home. Then, we will schedule your complimentary inhome or virtual consultation. Excited yet? Call the Kozar Design Team today at 865.392.6222 or visit www. January Highlights From the Publisher

I

t’s a new year. But you knew that. Flipping the page of our calendar from 2021 to 2022 tends to prompt thoughts of change, but you knew that, too. For some reason, January 1 gives us psychological permission to draw a line and forget the mistakes of the past and encourages us to resolutely resolve, “This year, I’m going to see this goal through to the end.” But where to start. Sometimes, we have so many things we want to fix or make better, we get overwhelmed and just don’t know where to start. Maybe you want to redesign your office, living room, or garage. Maybe you need to finally sit down with a financial advisor or just start saving more. Or, you might want to make some positive changes in your own look and feel. Whatever your focus will be for 2022, it is important to make a commitment and then follow through on it. If your list of resolutions, like mine, is as long as your arm, and you don’t know where to start, try this. First, write them all down. Second, narrow down the list to those that are manageable and could be accomplished in the short-term future; third, move the rest to a “medium and long-range goals” list. Next, read over the short-term goals list and think about how great it will feel to finally get each of those things done. Finally, choose to start with the one that bugs you the most; think about how great it will feel to lift that weight off your mind. The mental energy boost that you’ll gain is a huge by product of finally getting it done! That extra energy spurs motivation to attack the next item on the list. Then the whole process begins again. Just take on one item at a time – no matter how small. East Tennessee’s Mountain Views is looking forward to a great 2022. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, our loyal advertisers and readers, for helping to make Mountain Views successful. So, Happy New Year to all, and we wish you a very healthy and prosperous 2022. Now make your list!

The Art of Oriental Rug Washing

L

aunched in 1985, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning quickly earned a reputation for quality and affordable home and commercial carpet cleaning in East Tennessee. During its 37-year history, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning owner, Kerry McDuffie, also earned a reputation as an innovative entrepreneur who routinely invested in new, state-of-the-art technology. These technological advances not only helped successfully differentiate Superior from its competition, but it also resulted in far superior cleaning results for its customers. Today, as ever-growing numbers of homeowners and businesses are choosing hand-crafted Oriental rugs to replace wallto-wall carpeting, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has once again demonstrated its talent for innovation. Superior has built a state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing

boutique that safely and affordably cleans and revitalizes your family’s Oriental rugs. We hope you will find our recent interview with Kerry both informative and instructional. MV: There’s no question that Oriental rugs are replacing wall-to-wall carpeting in many American homes and businesses. Aside from their obvious visual differences, how do Oriental rugs and carpets differ? Kerry: Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting. Genuine Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of

art they are creating. Each rug tells a story based on its origin and time in history in which it was created. These rugs are truly art for your floor. MV: Does the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the handcrafting of Oriental rugs require a different cleaning process than that traditionally used on conventional carpeting? Kerry: Absolutely. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken to ensure that dyes remain stable during the entire cleaning process. While wall-to-wall carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, Oriental rugs must be washed using pure deionized cold water and natural fiber safe washing agents, then thoroughly rinsed, and hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room. MV: Alex Zahir, owner of AZ International, LLC Rug Gallery, whose family has hand-crafted fine Oriental rugs in his native Afghanistan for three generations, expressed his surprise at your extraordinary level of knowledge related to the Oriental rug industry. How did you gain that knowledge? Kerry: Our company is certified by a national certification board called the IICRC. We attend classes and seminars regularly to learn and keep up with the latest in rug washing knowledge and advancements in technology. I also frequently collaborate with Oriental rug specialists like Alex. MV: Why is knowledge of the rug industry important in washing these Oriental rugs? Kerry: You must know and understand the construction, fiber, and dye content to correctly, and safely, wash each rug. Many heirloom quality rugs are passed down from generation to generation. Oriental rug buyers often invest a great deal of time and money in selecting just the right designs, colors, sizes, and natural materials they want in their rugs. You and your rugs deserve the decades of experience that we can offer to ensure that your rugs are thoroughly and safely cleaned. Oriental rug washing, like rug weaving, is an art form in itself. MV: How did your knowledge and

experience in Oriental rug washing help you in the design and creation of your Farragut based rug washing boutique? Kerry: After visiting numerous other rug washing facilities nationally and attending a variety of schools and seminars, I decided to create a state of the art rug washing boutique featuring our proprietary 11 step washing process designed to provide a rug washing experience unavailable anywhere else. In fact, as advancements are made in our industry, we continue to invest in this new technology to deliver even better results. Recently we purchased a Marinator Decon System which cleans your rugs from the inside out by moving up to 80 gallons of deionized washing solution per minute through rugs to safely clean those difficult inner and back sides of your rugs. We also recently purchased and installed a Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor that replaces the wash pits used by the competition. The Centrum only uses clean deionized water to wash your rugs. The best way to differentiate the two systems is to compare them to your choice of a morning shower or a bath. With a shower you always bathe in clean water. MV: You have also earned a reputation for safely removing pet stains and odors. Explain. Kerry: Most rugs can be safely and successfully cleaned in our state-of-the-art rug washing boutique. However, the presence of pet urine or other animal accidents can compromise the dyes and degrade the natural fiber makeup of your rugs. Based on the construction of the rug, 100% removal of urine cannot always be guaranteed, although using our proprietary washing process, we have had good results. So, the presence of pet urine does not necessarily mean that your rug is ruined. Time is of the essence, so act quickly when an unexpected accident occurs. MV: Kerry, how can people learn more about Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning? Kerry: You can find out about us by visiting our website, www.superiorofknoxville.com. ast year, when a client tried to file his tax return, he was notified by the IRS that a return had already been filed under his social security number. After doing some research, we found that identity thieves had swooped in early and filed a fraudulent tax return, claiming a large refund which had been direct deposited to a bank account. We then had to submit additional proof that our client was the rightful owner of the social security number before the return could be processed – a long and laborious process, as you can imagine. And unfortunately, this isn’t an isolated instance – tax fraud is on the rise. While it seems that identity theft is all around us, the good news is that there are easy steps you can take to minimize your risk. Here are some quick tips: • Freeze your credit with all three major credit bureaus

- Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — which restricts access to your credit report so new credit can’t be open under your name without your permission. It’s a free service and you just need to remember to unfreeze it temporarily if you apply for new credit. • Stay vigilant and know what is being reported on your credit • Order a free credit report from the government-mandated www.annualcreditreport.com or directly from each credit bureau. • Order a free report of banking information reported in your name from www.chexsystems.com • Proactively request an IRS Identity Protection PIN that must be provided for your return to be successfully filed. • Be alert for statements that don’t arrive on time – the mailing address may have been changed. • Review not just your bank and credit card statements, but your health insurance statement of benefits too. Health insurance fraud is a booming business. • Shred credit card offers that come in the mail, or better yet, request to stop receiving them at www. optoutprescreen.com • Monitor your minor children’s credit report - a child’s

New Year. New Projects for your Kitchen or Bath!

W

ith the new year comes inspiration to tackle some projects around the house. Although you may have dreams of gutting your kitchen or renovating the bathroom, these big jobs are costly and time-consuming. Instead, consider taking on smaller projects that will give you the best bang for your buck. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity. 1. Organize and better utilize your pantry. Throughout the year, you probably accumulate all sorts of things in your pantry. By removing the contents and throwing away expired items you can start with a clean slate. Consider installing pull-out shelving to better access your items. Hard to reach items will be at your fingertips, and you will increase your storage capacity. 2. Create usable storage space in your bathroom cabinet. Bath products, hair products, and cleaning solutions may be taking up all the space under your bathroom sink, leaving you no room for essentials like toilet paper and tissues. With a two-tiered pullout shelving system, you can maximize your storage and easily find what you need. 3. Declutter and find more space for your pots and pans. Are you frustrated with the way you store your pots and pans? Most people get frustrated looking in their cabinets for the right size pot and matching lid. With pull-out shelving, you can easily arrange your pots, pans, and lids so you can access them quickly when cooking.

4. Make better use of corner cabinets. Most kitchens have a corner cabinet that has dead space that is often hard to access. With a unique, pull-out solution for corner cabinets, you can add more storage space in your kitchen. It’s a cost-effective way to use the space you already have without adding to the footprint of your kitchen.

Good Shepherd Center Productivity Benefits from TCF Grant

P

roductivity at the Good Shepherd Center (GSC) in Madisonville improved dramatically thanks to a grant from the Tellico Community Foundation (TCF). The grant was used to purchase six laptop computers, scanners and food pantry management software. Recently, TCF made an $8,000 grant, its largest cash grant in the foundation’s short history, to the GSC. The newly purchased technology has transformed the organization. “Most all of our tedious, manual intensify processes have been effectively streamlined,” says Tina Smith, GSC Executive Director. “Before we had our laptops, we were tracking and trying to manage the center by producing reams of paper records.” Donations of food, clothing, money, client/volunteer information and other items are now recorded electronically. In an operation which distributes more than 30,000 pounds

of food monthly, the laptops have enhanced the intake monitoring of donated food and its distribution to Good Shepherd Center clients. More than 1,700 monthly clients depend on GSC for all types of sustenance, including over 400 children . They are now quickly identified and serviced using the new software program. Volunteer scheduling has been simplified and made easier to coordinate. “The TCF Board recognized an acute situation at the Good Shepherd Center and saw how a grant from the foundation could have an immediate impact on the organization and on Monroe County,” commented Joe Beyel, chair of the Tellico Community Foundation. “We were in a position to act, thanks to the recent sale of our land parcel in front of the Food Lion. We’re delighted to help GSC address this critical need.” Margaret Cummings, chair of the Good Shepherd Center Board of Directors noted, “This TCF grant has totally changed our business operations. The true benefactors are the people we serve in Monroe County. We are now able to do a better job, quicker, more efficiently and effectively in getting them what they need.” Donations to TCF can be made online at www.etf.org/Tellico or by contacting Jill Murphy of the East Tennessee Foundation at jmurphy@etf.org or at 865-524-1223. People can make a one-time donation or a pledge over time: monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation would be appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible. The Center is a 501 (c) 3 organization. Currently the Center is running a State of TN approved Lottery with prizes at $5000, $3000, and $1500, tickets are $50. Donations can be mailed to: The Good Shepherd Center, PO Box 353, 5150 Hwy 411 S, Madisonville, TN 37354. The Center’s phone number is 423-420-8888.

Happy New Year and Happy Savings!

ANUARY IS always a great time to reassess your winter wardrobe. There is finally time to go through all of the pieces hanging in your closet that haven’t been worn this season and either donate them or take them to the nearest consignment shop. Whichever you choose, you’ve begun the process of updating your own winter wardrobe while selections are still great and on sale!

At The Lily Pad, our sales are huge semi-annual events which take place in January and July. Our winter merchandise is now 25% off, and on Saturday, January 15th at 10:00 am, every piece that’s left goes to 50% off! We’ve found this method to be quite effective to not only clear out the store, but also to pass tremendous savings on to our customers. As the winter merchandise goes on sale, our “La Sale Boutique” (the big room at the rear of the store) goes to 70% off! Thus, the clearing out begins as we ready ourselves,

and the store, for a brand-new season. Spring fashions have been ordered, fresh looks are arriving, and the holiday decor has been put away for another year. We’ll look forward to seeing so many of our customers and friends during our unbelievable sale days. If you’ve ever spent a day at Filene’s Basement in Boston, The Lily Pad is almost as wild on the first days of our sale! Plan to spend some time with friends and neighbors, every arm loaded with bargains, and having the time of our lives! What a fun day during a not so fun month. It’s a social event you won’t want to miss! At The Lily Pad, we reflect on how blessed we have been this year to again be part of your lives. We truly appreciate the vote of confidence you place in us to be your fashion headquarters! Our most sincere wishes for a happy and healthy 2022!

The Roof Cleaning Company that Knows Roofing

A

re you embarrassed by the ugly black streaks or moss on your roof but are worried that the cleaning process could damage your roof? You are right to be concerned. Certain roof cleaning methods, such as pressure washing, can cause significant damage your roof. Asphalt shingles are especially fragile, and high-pressure water can - and will – cause damage. In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are delighted to share this interview with Steven Sadler, the owner of Clean Roof LLC. Clean Roof LLC is a local business comprised of roofers trained and licensed in cleaning and repairing varying roofs. They are also a Better Business Bureau accredited company with an A+ rating. Clean Roof LLC professionally cleans your roof using a soft wash process that will make it look great as well as potentially increase its lifespan. Clean Roof LLC is both properly insured, trained, and licensed to clean and maintain roofs. MV: How did you get started in the roof cleaning business? Steven: As a roofer doing mainly repairs, I saw many roofs that had significant staining. Stains from natural contaminants aren’t just an eyesore to look at, they also take a toll on the life of your roof’s shingles. If not cleaned periodically, they can permanently damage roofing materials. I knew how roofs worked, I saw how important it is for homeowners to properly maintain their roofs, but there were so few companies doing it right. So, I decided to do it myself! MV: Can you elaborate on how these contaminants cause costly damage to shingles? Steven: Algae alone can shorten shingle life by as much as 30%. That damage could have you replacing the roof prematurely. Even repairing small sections of a damaged roof is more costly than a roof cleaning. I saw many homeowners using pressure washing to get their roofs clean, which could also lead to real damage. MV: What makes Clean Roof LLC different from other roof cleaning companies? Steven: As former roof installers, we are trained and insured specifically for roof cleaning, which is different from pressure washing. We are so confident in our process; we also guarantee our results. We encourage you to think twice before hiring a pressure washing company to clean your roof due to potential shingle damage and voided roof warranties. We have researched the recommendations from each shingle manufacturer so we can tailor our cleaning treatment accordingly. From shingle to tile, we have installed and maintained all sorts of roofs, and, because of our experience, we have especially skilled knowledge for cleaning your shingles safely without voiding your manufacturer’s warranty.

MV: Contractors are so busy today. Many times, they don’t even have the time to return customers calls. What is your philosophy on communication with customers? Steven: It’s really important to me to provide great customer service, especially in this market. If I don’t pick up the phone when you call, I will give you a call back within 24 hours. After you decide to use us, we strive to be in constant communication with you until the job is done. MV: So, what causes those black streaks we see on so many roofs? Steven: Algae – This typically causes the black streaking pattern seen on dirty roofs. Algae is most apparent on asphalt shingles of any color. Algae typically appears on the shady side of your roof or the north face, although it can be present on all sides. But we’ll also get rid of the moss or lichen on your roof. Those are pretty common in East Tennessee. MV: Are there other items homeowners should be aware of with Clean Roof LLC? Steven: Thanks to our roofing experience, we can

AFTER

check for maintenance needs, spot troublesome areas such as potential leak hazards or other unseen damage and provide a general overall inspection of your roof while it’s being cleaned. Also, during the winter months, we don’t clean if the temperature is 50 degrees or less, so winter cleanings are scheduled as the weather allows. MV: Does Clean Roof LLC provide any other services in addition to roof cleaning? Steven: Absolutely. We clean your siding and gutters, do roof repairs, and if you wish, we can set up an annual or bi-annual plan to make sure your roof & gutters are always clean. We can even safely remove your old satellite dish! MV: Can plants be harmed by your process? Steven: We protect your plants by neutralizing our cleaning solution, keeping plants wet before and while rinsing your roof. Be at ease, we have never killed a plant and we don’t plan on starting with yours! MV: Thank you for taking the time to share this information with us, Steven! Is there anything you would like to add? Steven: It only takes looking up to realize a clean, wellmaintained roof is key to preserving not just the function, but outward beauty and appeal of your house. So, if you are sick and tired of being sick and tired of the unsightly streaks and discolorations on the top or even sides of your home, give me a call at 865-313-6779 or visit our website at www.cleanroofllc.com. There is no cost for an estimate. The only thing you have to lose are those unsightly stains on your roof! hen we enjoyed the gift of time with our friends and family this past holiday season, whether it was when we were gathered round the table at Thanksgiving, or exchanging gifts on Christmas morning, one of the greatest treasures we received were the words

of our loved ones, and the laughter of our children and grandchildren. Is there any more magical sound than the laughter of a child?

Unfortunately, for many of us, experiencing that treasure grows more and more difficult over time. Sometimes we don’t even notice until that treasure eludes us altogether. When we, or a spouse, parent, or grandparent experience hearing loss, it

“We love you grandma and grandpa!”

“You heard that, right?”

You may be one free hearing exam and consultation away from rediscovering the sounds of life

can come as a shock, and create a sense of separation we could never imagine before. One may compensate by turning up the volume on the television or asking loved ones to speak louder and clearer. A good friend or spouse may repeat what others say when in circumstances where background noise or mumbling may seem to be the culprit. For some, it’s difficult to acknowledge they suffer from hearing loss, believing it’s an admission of advancing age or weakness. But denying that it is happening and refusing help from others comes with its own additional hardships, as untreated hearing loss can exacerbate loss of other senses, such as balance and cognitive function, making this period of transition in life all the more difficult. While it’s true that most hearing loss occurs as we age, just as corrective lenses can overcome loss of 20/20 vision, so too hearing loss can be likewise addressed. And thanks to the technological advances in today’s hearing instruments, it’s possible for you, your friend, or family member to again lead full and active lives. Have no fear. The new hearing aids we sell are not your grandma’s hearing aids! People will not even notice you’re wearing

them. Participate once more in everyday conversation, confident that your ears won’t get you into trouble. This last Christmas may have come with some disappointments if you found yourself realizing the difficulties of simply hearing the conversations of your family and friends, the laughter of the children around you, or the carols filled with holiday spirit. But instead of seeing this as a loss, think of it as a wakeup call - the nudge you needed to take action. What comes next? Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation of your/their current hearing situation. Yes, it’s free, and it’s that easy. Experience the compassionate care that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Remember, Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, but he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Call us today and make this new year one you will remember. Dollywood’s 2022 Season Features Anticipated Return of Guest-Favorite Experiences, Expanded Festivals New season pass types provide more options for guests

E

ven with all the activities and events that occurred at Dollywood during the 2021 season, the Pigeon Forge theme park plans for an even bigger 2022, thanks to larger festival offerings, the return of two guest-favorite experiences, and a new season pass structure that allows guests more options as they plan for next year. The park opens to the general public for the 2022 season on Saturday, March 12. Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival presented by Covenant Health (April 22-June 5) grows larger with several new iconic Mosaiculture displays that increase the overall footprint of this colorful springtime event. Vivid larger-than-life flower sculptures create an immersive atmosphere for park guests as they make their way through hundreds of thousands of blooms during this stunning festival. In addition, Dollywood’s culinary team showcases their world-class abilities with a menu full of delectable delicacies that highlight the tastes of spring in the Smokies. Dollywood’s innovative Sweet Summer Nights drone and fireworks show was one of this season’s most memorable highlights to date, and in 2022 the show grows with even more drones taking to the skies above the Smoky Mountains. In collaboration with Intel Drone Light Shows, Sweet Summer Nights combines the advanced technology of hundreds of sophisticated drones with a traditional fireworks extravaganza. It’s the perfect way for families to celebrate their unforgettable day at Dollywood. Sweet Summer Nights—which also includes a nightly dance party—takes place each evening during Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration (June 18- Aug. 7). The Gazillion Bubbles Show—one of Dollywood guests’ most requested shows—also marks its return during Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration and promises to leave every child and child-at-heart with a smile on their face, thanks to “gazillions” of bubbles and guest interactions that make up every performance. The Gazillion Bubbles Show is back for the first time since 2017. A family tradition for many families, Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana (Sept. 23- Oct. 29) celebrates the beauty of fall in the Smokies with thousands of carved pumpkins, spirited performances from talented artists and the fun of Great Pumpkin LumiNights presented by Covenant Health. Great Pumpkin LumiNights, which previously has been named the best theme park harvest event in the world, features elaborate displays that create the picture-perfect photo op for families to enjoy. New in 2022, guests will have a hoot in Craftsman’s Valley as it transforms into Hoot Owl Hollow thanks to a number of owl-themed displays both in the park and suspended in the trees above. The 13-time winner for Best Theme Park Christmas event—Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana (Nov. 5- Jan. 1)—concludes the park’s 2022 season with five million lights, festive holiday shows, and the warm Christmas atmosphere guests have come to expect during this joyous time of year. With so much new to experience in 2022, it is the perfect season for a Dollywood season pass. To accommodate the ever-evolving needs of Dollywood guests, a new season pass structure featuring several new pass types—Silver, Gold and Diamond—has been created to allow more options for visitors to tailor their experience. The Dollywood Silver Season Pass starts at $139 and offers unlimited visits, two Bring-a-Friend Free tickets and a discount on Dollywood lodging. For just $55 more, guests can opt for the Dollywood Gold Season Pass. The Gold Pass—which is priced $30 less than a 2021 Gold Season Pass—represents a tremendous value for guests thanks to unlimited visits, Saturday Early Ride Time for the passholder, four Bring-A-Friend Free tickets, and discounts on dining, merchandise, and lodging. In addition, the Gold Pass provides free parking, a one-day unlimited refill mug per pass, various other discounts, and access to special “Golden Events,” exclusive events just for Gold and Diamond passholders. Only the named passholder can receive the perks associated with each pass type. Diamond Season Passes provide a premium experience for guests. Diamond passholders receive six Bring-A-Friend Free tickets, larger discounts, an all-season unlimited refill mug per pass, and a free one-time preferred parking admission per pass. Diamond passholders also receive many of the other perks assigned to both Gold and Silver passes. In addition, Diamond Season Passes provide the passholder unlimited access to Dollywood’s Splash Country. Gold and Diamond Pass Holders also can take advantage of another exciting new perk created for the 2022 season, Dollywood’s new daily “Golden Hours.” During the first hour of each operating day, Gold and Diamond Season Passes will operate just like TimeSaver passes, allowing the named passholder expedited boarding on Dollywood’s world-class rides and attractions. Passes for 2022 are on sale now. For more information about Dollywood’s 2022 season or season passes, please visit Dollywood.com or download the Dollywood app.

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

ocal pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, along with her colleague, pharmacist Monty Roark, operate a unique, client-centered concept in pharmaceutical care: believeRX, located at 9627 Countryside Center Lane near the intersection of Middlebrook Pike and Bob Kirby Road in Knoxville. Ellen, Monty, and their compassionate, caring team of highly trained pharmaceutical associates have a mission to provide traditional pharmacy services combined with a holistic approach to health and well-being. believeRX recognizes that your local pharmacy can and should play an important role in your family’s total healthcare and wellness in partnership with your other healthcare providers. believeRX combines the personal and caring touch of the now almost non-existent neighborhood pharmacy with today’s rapidly evolving healthcare industry. Ellen and her team have created a holistic and interactive approach to your pharmaceutical experience designed to equip you to “Live Your Best Life.” believeRX is a full-service traditional pharmacy where you can get all of your medications and supplements, as well as

receive a personal approach to your health. They believe there is more than one way to prevent or treat disease and they offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more. believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweet-

eners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic! Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. When I was growing up, my dad owned a pharmacy in a small town in California. Like believeRX, he also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. He even had an

ice cream and soda fountain. Also, like believeRX, it was very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. My dad knew his customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, I used to feel like I was treated like I was only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that I feel that it would be a step-up for them to treat me like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging to me that believeRX still believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service. believeRX even has a modern/healthy version of the old-fashioned soda fountain: believeRXtra Fresh Juices and Smoothies! To experience a friendly, caring pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today! believeRX/believeRXtra 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865.214.6672 www.believeRXtra.com Monday - Friday 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 2 pm

Organization is Healthy

F

or many of us cleaning up and clearing out to get our home more organized can feel like a monumental task we probably prefer to avoid. While getting organized can be a challenge, the benefits are worth the effort. “Living in a cluttered home can create constant low-grade stress and subtly, but steadily, drain your energy,” explains, Kathryn Norton co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Just spending 15 to 30 minutes a day cleaning out a junk drawer or the family’s mudroom has proven to have many benefits to make our lives healthier and happier.” The biggest benefits of an organized home are: Save Time One of the greatest and most obvious benefits of an organized home is saving time. When you don’t know where to find things, you spend too long searching. You waste valuable time you could be spending on something else. If you

organize your things, giving every object a home that makes sense and is functional for your life, then you’ll know where they are, even when you’re in a hurry. Save Money Have you ever had to buy an extra flashlight or blouse because you couldn’t find the one you already had? Replacing items due to poor organization can obviously waste money. Once you get everything set up the way you want, you’ll also be less likely to impulse-buy odds and ends that are just going to take up space. Promotes Productivity Disorganization can make you feel unmotivated. How many times have you put off a work project or even a hobby because you had so much stuff you needed to do? The same goes for a cluttered home. It’s difficult to feel inspired to work on a project when there’s so much visual stimuli going on you can’t concentrate. Fostering a clean, decluttered environment can

help encourage your creative juices and give you time, energy, and the focus you need to see projects through to completion. Increases Energy Chaos and clutter is draining. It can sap your energy and even make it feel like it is hard to breathe. A well-organized space gives you an energized feeling. Pay attention to how you feel the next time you walk into a cluttered room. How does this compare to walking into a well-organized room? Soothing Surroundings Are Nurturing Being in a space characterized by order and a sense of tranquility, is soothing and helps relive stress. Coming home to an orderly home can help you feel like you’re entering a sanctuary away from the stresses of the outside world. From inside the home to the garage, Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage will listen to your specific needs and design systems that help you stay organized in your closet, home office, mudroom -- almost any room in the house. Turn chaos into calm with Tailored Living and PremierGarage.

Healthy Living Begins With Healthy Water

I

t’s a rare thing for the publisher of any newspaper or magazine to endorse an advertiser that appears regularly in their publication. But in the case of one such advertiser, Aqua Clear Water Systems, I’ve made this exception. In fact, it’s the first such exception in 21 years. I turn 72 next month, and I guess like many others my age, I invest more of my time making healthier living choices with the goal of enjoying a healthier lifestyle and enhancing my longevity. I select my healthcare providers only after thoroughly researching their health scores and patient reviews. I exercise regularly and make healthier food selections at the grocery store and when dining out. But, I believe one of the best decisions I’ve made has been to improve the quality of the water I consume, cook with, and bathe in. Human beings are made up of about 60% water on average, your heart about 75-80% water and your brain about 8085% water. To say that water might be the single most important element that our bodies and our overall health depend on is an understatement. I did a great deal of research of available water treatment systems for my home before selecting Aqua Clear Water Systems to install a water softener and drinking water filtration system. Their sales consultant was knowledgeable and experienced as was their installation team. We experienced one minor glitch which was quickly resolved to our complete satisfaction. Let me add that their equipment is state of the art, far superior to their competition and virtually trouble free. Today I drink, cook with, and bathe in

In the Garden by

e begin again. Another year has passed, and now we enter a season of reflection and renewal. What do you want to do in your yard this upcoming year? What needs to change? Often things have already begun changing in our yards; trees have grown and shade areas that used to be sunny, trees have died and formerly shady areas are now in the sun, a new neighbor moved in and you would rather not see quite so much of them. Sometimes, however, the change is in you. Maybe you have become a caregiver and you no longer have time to work in your yard. Maybe you have had physical changes to your health that make it harder to do yardwork. On the other hand, maybe you have retired and can finally spend some time playing in the dirt! Keep those things in mind as you plan any changes to your landscape, because January is the perfect month to begin. The “bone-structure” of your landscape is evident, so you can see what is going on at the basic level. The first step to getting started on your plans is to go out and make notes. Have a nice walk around your yard and check on everything. What did well and what did not? Do you have plants that need to be removed, relocated or refreshed? Have some plants

outgrown their location? Did you lose plants? Once you see where you are, you can start to plan on where you want to go. There are all sorts of places to get ideas, from magazines to Pinterest to HGTV. I would like to remind you, however, that some of those lovely designs are not suitable for our area. There are also shows that have the most horrendously overplanted yards I have ever see. Seriously, using half the plants that they install would still be overplanted. Before you spend a lot of money on a landscape that is doomed, stop by with those photos or ideas and have a chat with us. We can help you pick the right plant for the right place. If planting trees and shrubs is one of the things on your list, you can still do that. Winter planting allows them to focus exclusively on their root system so they will be ready to grow in the spring. The assortment of plants that is available might not be extensive, but you are likely to find bargains! Getting your soil ready for next year is another great gardening project for winter. Planting cover crops or simply adding topsoil and compost will replenish nutrients in the soil and give all your spring plants a nice boost. You also need to try to stay on top of the weed situation. If you don’t, you will

find yourself this spring out on your hands and knees trying to find you plants amongst the weeds. Kill what you can, pull what you can, and Preen, Preen, Preen! Pruning is another winter gardening chore, and a good way to vent some frustration! Pruning is a learned skill, however. Whacking away without educating yourself is like letting your 4-year-old grandchild cut your hair. It isn’t likely to be pretty. Here are a few pruning guidelines: 1. There is no rule that says you must prune. Pruning should be used, however, to remove dead, diseased or damaged branches. It is also useful to open up dense canopies to allow sunlight and air circulation. In addition, pruning can create larger blooms or more fruit, and will control and direct new growth. 2. Pruning should be done at a specific time of the year depending on the plant. Blooming trees and shrubs are generally done after flowering. Others are done when they are dormant. Pruning at the wrong time can eliminate your flowers or kill your plant. There are pruning tables available at utextension.utk.edu. I also have a printout that I can copy for you. Take a few minutes to read it before you cut all of next year’s blooms off. 3. Pruning should be done with a sharp pair of pruners or loppers. Dull tools

tear the wood and leave it open to disease and insects. A few evergreens can be done with hedge shears, but those are the ONLY plants that shears should be used on. Pruning saws are good for larger branches, but if you need to use a chainsaw you should probably leave it to a professional. 4. It is possible to salvage plants that have been butchered in the past, so stop by if you have questions. I will finish by imploring you to take care of the birds this winter. Our songbirds, like our bees, are in crisis. Help them build up fat supplies to get them through the cold weather by providing high fat foods such as sunflower seeds and suet. Keep your feeders full and clean and use a good quality food. It isn’t a bargain if most of it is kicked out onto the ground! We sell Cole’s, which is a great line with very few fillers. We reduce our hours in the winter, but we are still here 5 days a week. If you have questions, just give us a call, or stop by. We would love to help you have a beautiful yard! Common Fig: Ficus carica

T

Submitted by Celeste Scott, Horticultural Agent, UT-TSU Extension Madison County

ennessee gardeners often consider the common fig, Ficus carica, as not well suited to the majority of the state’s growing conditions. While many common figs are indeed best grown in Zones 8 to 10, several cultivars now possess cold hardiness and can be successfully grown in Zones 7, 6 and even 5 when properly sited and managed. The term ‘hardy’ refers not only to the limbs’ increased ability to sustain winter conditions, but more importantly to the roots’ ability to survive cold temperatures. Ficus carica cultivars ‘Brown Turkey,’ ‘Improved Celeste,’ and ‘Hardy Chicago’ are all touted for improved cold tolerance. In growing seasons following mild winters many cultivars, including those listed here, have the ability to produce two crops. The first crop, grown on previous year’s wood, is referred to as the breba. This crop is usually smaller and less flavorful than the main crop, which matures later in the summer on current year’s growth. In some cases, the breba may be the only crop that has adequate time to develop. In colder zones and exposed sites, it is common for the above ground plant parts to be injured and even killed to the ground by harsh winters, but two qualities in particular give these cold hardy cultivars a leg up. The cold hardiness of the roots ensures that the plant will survive, and their classification as a short-season producer (90 to 100 days to maturation) means that a crop can be produced on new wood the following season. These qualities provide an obvious advantage in colder climates with shorter growing seasons. While proper cultivar selection is non-negotiable, proper siting also plays an important role. Placement near a south or southwest facing wall or structure can provide protection from harsh winter wind, give access to high light, and even provide radiant heat. These conditions come together to create an ideal micro-climate. Obviously, while not everyone will have this ‘ideal fig paradise’ in his or her landscape, we can still make figs work for you! If no structural protection is feasible, young plants can be caged and surrounded with straw, hay or leaves for added protection from fluctuating cold temperatures. A final option is to grow fig plants in very large containers and move the plants to a more protected area, like a garage, during the winter months. ‘Brown Turkey’ is one of the most common cultivars on the market and it’s reliable. ‘Improved Celeste’ is from the breeding program at Louisiana State University and is often referred to as Sugar Fig because of its sweet flavor. It also has been noted for heat tolerance. ‘Hardy Chicago’ is likely the most cold tolerant with above-ground portions hardy down to 10 F and roots to 20 degrees below zero. Contrary to popular belief, the fruits of common fig do

not require internal pollination by a specialized wasp. The fruits of Ficus carica are parthenocarpic (fruit develops without fertilization) and therefore do not require multiple cultivars to set fruit. As fruits mature, look for three signs of ripeness: color change from green to brown or purple, softened fruit and hanging fruit. Figs are used in a variety of dishes, from sweet desserts to savory meat and cheese combos. For the staff of the UT Gardens, Jackson, a favorite pairing is fresh fig with goat or cream cheese on crackers or toast and drizzled with honey! Ficus carica collections at UT Gardens, Jackson, include ‘Giant Green Italian,’ ‘Pete’s Honey,’ ‘LSU Purple,’ ‘Violet de Bordeaux,’ ‘Hardy Chicago,’ and ‘Celeste.’ At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, you can see ‘Brown Turkey,’ ‘Celeste,’ ‘Panache,’ and an unnamed heirloom from George Wash-

ington’s father-in-law’s plantation in Virginia. I hope that this brief plant profile provides some enlightenment and inspires you to try Ficus carica in your own landscape! The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, see the Gardens website: utia.tennessee. edu/state-botanical-garden.

Anna Rykaczewska: Contemporary Landscapes in the upper gallery Anna Rykaczewska was born, lived in and received her education in Warsaw, Poland. She graduated from the High School of Fine Arts where she studied painting, sculpture, graphics, costume design, scenography, jewelry design, and photography. She then earned a master’s degree in art history at the University of Warsaw. Rykaczewska worked for seven years as the Art Specialist and Designer at Ars Christiana, the premiere and largest company in Poland specializing in religious art. She has resided in many European countries due to her husband’s scientific career, and since 1997 has lived in the United States. In 2001, the YWCA honored her with a nomination for the “Woman of Distinction” award in recognition of her volunteer work. One of her paintings was presented to His Excellency US Ambassador to Poland Victor Ashe by the local Polish-American Community in 2004, and the painting exhibited at the Residence of the US Ambassador in Warsaw for six years. Rykaczewska has had several solo exhibitions, including two at Peter’s Jewelers in Oak Ridge in 2006 and 2014, the latter of which resulted in “Visions Magazine” featuring an extensive article about her. Her first exhibition at the Emporium occurred in 2014, and this exhibition features oils, acrylics, and photographs. “My purpose in art is not to surprise or shock. Instead, I share my vision of the beauty that I find in nature. Observing nature is a fascination of mine. I love noting the colors, shapes, light, and atmosphere - I see the world as a beautiful painting. Capturing these observations, and the emotions they rouse in me, on canvas and in photos brings me great joy. The paintings and photographs presented for this exhibition are reflections of the delight stirred in me by the diverse formations of the wonders of the world which I have seen. In the abstract compositions, I wanted to render the rhythm, lines, and shapes of water and wind, like artists, immortalized in stone. I also wanted to give the impression of the ways light changes colors.” – Anna Rykaczewska. https://art-ar.com/

While he has painted interiors and exteriors of houses and fences, he never painted a canvas until turning 60 years old in 2020. After giving away one of his purchased abstract paintings, he sought a way to “replace” it by putting brush to canvas, and from then on, he has painted nearly 100 works in just 18 months. He is excited to share 21 of these new works in his debut exhibition. His favorite artist and a great inspiration is Jackson Pollock. Where Does the Light Come From: Works by

Mene Manresa Bodipo: Suyã (Dreams) on the North Wall “With Suyã, I want to reconnect with my audience in a new adventure of colors, poetry, dreams and stories. Within this exhibition, my world of colors and compositions manifest into abstract environments. First, viewers will encounter Míne télamû (Child of my land) as they begin a journey into my dreams. This exhibition represents a land of my past, a land that raised me. Before viewers “awake” from my dreams, they will have crossed many lands and seas only to find themselves shipwrecked and remembering where they came from – a dream that connects them to their ancestors.” – Mene Manresa Desiderio Manresa Bodipo, artistically known as Mene Manresa, was born on the island of Annobon (Equatorial Guinea). From an early age, he studied drawing, painting and ceramics at the Hispano Guinean Cultural Center in Malabo. He became part of the Monte Alen project where he was able to expand his skills as an artist along with professional artists from Spain. Mene Manresa has participated in several artistic competitions in Equatorial Guinea and has won several awards. He expanded his knowledge in graphic design, sculpture, animation, and in entertainment (circus), however he is most recognized for his paintings. In 2011 he did a cultural exchange tour in the U.S. funded by the non-governmental organization EG Justice. During the tour, his paintings were shown in several universities and at Highlander Research & Education Center. Manresa is inspired by everyday factors of his environment, and he interposes them in an abstract and modern-realistic world. His work is unique with vivid colors that impact viewers at first sight and help them navigate his world of imaginary composition. Recently, he represented Equatorial Guinea in the international art exhibition United Nations: Symbol of Life, Freedom & Happiness 2020-2021. He is considered to be one of the best young artists in his country, Equatorial Guinea, where culture and artistic expression are being absorbed by globalization and lack of focus in cultural sectors. www.instagram.com/menemanresa

Pepe & Jose Calabres in the display case This new exhibition features gouache, ink, and watercolor paintings as well as ceramic sculptures by father and son Pepe and Jose Calabres. “It is not easy to discern what exactly art is, but we know it has something to do with “energy” because all civilizations have told their stories through their art and not because of their money or weapons. As artists, we are assured that when someone is in front of a work of art, rather than knowing it, they can feel it. A work of art is the witness of a story, of a journey. Each of our pieces are a fragment of many life stories. Tiny pieces of learning that are marked by situations that are not exclusively ours; all of our stories are, in one way or another, connected to everyone else’s stories.” – Pepe and Jose Calabres Pepe Calabres was born in Valencia, Venezuela in 1947 and is an artist and graphic designer who graduated from the Royal London College of Arts and Printing of England specializing in typographic design. He is recognized for being a sculptor, ceramist, writer, jeweler, and theater director. He has received four national art awards and more than 150 exhibitions to his credit and is considered to be one of the most relevant living artists of Venezuela. He is one of the pioneers of body paint in Latin America since starting to work with it in 1996 to create avant-garde stage performances in which giant screens in movement and live music predominate. Some of his pieces are part of important collections such as the Vatican, World Bank, United Nations, and some renowned European museums. Jose Calabres was born in Trujillo, Venezuela, in 1980. The son of Pepe Calabres, he is a musician, photographer, video editor and journalist and is recognized for being a ceramist, screenwriter, sculptor, and filmmaker. He has learned and worked ceramics with his father since an early age and in 2000, he officially became part of the production team of Pepe Calabres. He has produced visual arts and opening performances for Pepe Calabres exhibitions, three World Bodypaint Festivals, and television shows for several worldwide broadcasting companies. www.instagram.com/knoxvillehandmadearts www.instagram.com/josecalabres www.instagram.com/jackiecalabres The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, 100 S. We interviewed numerous builders in the area and decided to go with Kit Keener as we toured some of their new builds and completed homes. We were very impressed with the attention to details and quality of workmanship. Kit was a pleasure to work with and answered all of our questions and took our design changes in stride. Derek Miller, the project manager, was awesome to deal with. He was right on top of things, returned phone calls promptly and made great suggestions. He went above and beyond. Krisha, the office manager, communicated with us on a weekly basis so we knew what was going on with suppliers and invoicing. She was so easy to talk to, is detail oriented and caring. www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759 Don and I would218 highly recommend Kit andLoudon, his team. Make Tax Filing Easier in 2022

F

iling taxes for 2020 was…challenging. Yes, that’s a good way to put it. Not impossible, but not exactly fun, either. While your 2021 return hopefully won’t be quite as much of a challenge, there are still several unusual factors to be accounted for (e.g., Child Tax Credits and Economic Impact Payments). However, there are some simple steps you can take now to help make filing those tax returns easier come January. Gather your tax records The best tax records are organized tax records. If your records aren’t quite there, now is the perfect time to get them together. First, be sure to notify the IRS if your address has changed and notify the Social Security Administration of any legal name changes. Next, you should have any year-end documents you’ve received from the IRS, such as: • Letter 6419, the 2021 Total Advance Child Tax Credit Payments • Letter 6475, your 2021 Economic Impact Payment • Form 1095-A, the Health Insurance Marketplace StatementW-2 from your employer(s) Most income is taxable, including unemployment income, state tax refunds, gig economy income and virtual currencies. So, you’ll need the following documentation: • 1099-INT or 1099-DIV from banks, unemployment compensation, dividends, and distributions from a pension, annuity or retirement plan • 1099-K, 1099-MISC, W-2 or any other income statements for contractors, freelancers and other gig economy workers

Your One-Stop Destination for All Your Flooring and Cabinet Needs

• Any other income documents and records of your virtual currency (e.g., Bitcoin) transactions • All 2021 information related to the Child Tax Credit and Premium Tax Credit • If you received a third Economic Impact Payment and believe you qualify for an additional amount, you’ll need your stimulus payment and plus-up amounts to calculate and claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit • Cash and non-cash charitable contributions Don’t forget the other “usual’s,” such as Form 1098 for mortgage interest you paid, receipts for deductible expenses, and your books and records for any business income and expenses. Set up your online account If you haven’t set up an online IRS account yet, do it now (you’ll find links and information at irs.gov/individuals). If you already have an online account, make sure you can still access your account. An online account is important because it allows you to securely: • View the amount of your Economic Impact Payment(s) • Access the Child Tax Credit Update Portal • Approve or reject authorization requests from your tax professional • Update your email address and opt in or out of paper notices Other steps If you always receive a paper check because you don’t have a financial institution, this is an excellent time to open an account at an FDIC-insured bank or an NCUA-insured credit union. That will enable you to receive your tax refund by direct deposit, which will get to you much faster than a paper check. If you prefer not to work with a financial institution, you can even get a pay card from your local grocery store or a large retailer like Walmart and have the refund deposited to the card. Also, check with your tax professional on a couple of important questions that may not make a difference in this year’s return but will give you a jump-start for the 2022 tax year: • Do I need to adjust the amount I withhold from my paycheck? (The IRS also has a Tax Withholding Estimator for your use at irs.gov/payments/tax-withholding) • Should I make estimated tax payments? (This is especially important for gig workers) In anticipation of a more “normal” tax season, the official tax deadline has reverted to April 15. So, we hope this information will get you started on prompt and easier filing. If you’d like more information, irs.gov/filing has a library’s worth of information to help you prepare for filing your 2021 tax return. As always, our firm is current on the latest rules and regulations, and we’re available and ready to help. Here’s to a stressless tax season for us all!
