With dishes like Braised Rabbit, Fried Catfish and Waffles, and Crispy Quail with Hot Water Cornbread, five-time James Beard semi-finalist Chef John Fleer’s newest venture, Benne on Eagle at the Foundry Hotel, will pay homage to its historic Eagle Street neighborhood and the often overlooked contributions of AfricanAmerican cooks to Appalachian and Southern food. February Highlights

F

From the Publisher

ebruary is a challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine. But one bright spot this month is the celebration of Valentine’s Day. It’s a day we can make plans for a special night out and have a wonderful dinner or get away to a favorite warmer location. I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her, like my husband who sent me an early Valentine. It was a personalized gift of a sentiment he wrote himself and had etched on a large acrylic heart that now sits on my dresser. The personal touch to a gift like this is what is cherished and remembered for a lifetime. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we want to highlight not only gifts that will make your Valentine feel special, but we want to highlight events and activities that can be enjoyed. Whether you are looking for a gift that pampers like a day at the spa, something that sparkles and glitters, or a special sweet treat, we invite you to check out all the possibilities inside our February edition. You will be sure to find the perfect gift that your special someone will cherish long after February 14th. I hope your February is filled with joy and sunshine. From all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we wish all of you a very happy Valentine’s Day!

Amish Excellence

“We Enjoy Not Having to Say No” O By Angie Carroll, Owner of Amish Excellence

n behalf of all of us here at Amish Excellence, we are delighted to welcome the newest member of our sales and design team, Chad Rial. Chad will be well known to many of your readers, having worked in the Knoxville area furniture marketplace for four years. A graduate of Oregon State Chad Rial University with a degree in Landscape Design, Chad’s formal education in design has helped him earn a reputation for design excellence and integrity among his thousands of satisfied customers he has served since 2001. “I guess most East Tennesseans will best remember me from Haverty’s Furniture,” said Chad. “My recent transition to Amish Excellence made great sense from a customer service perspective. At Amish Excellence, 100% of the furniture we sell is custom made. What I enjoy most about custom made furniture, however, is rarely ever having to say no. Because all of our furniture is designed and crafted one piece at a time, we can offer different solid hardwood species, fabric choices, wood species, paint, stains, finishes, and, more importantly, furniture made to your precise size specifications. That means not having to settle for anything less than exactly what you want. “I also enjoy offering all of our customers a level of quality craftsmanship that is becoming more and more difficult to find today – and at a price competitive with similar quality furniture you might find elsewhere. Also, there are no veneers masquerading as solid hardwoods.” Some other recent additions you’ll discover at Amish Excellence is our new 2D furniture design software service that we make available to our clients for either in-showroom or in-home consultations. We are also pleased to offer a full line of performance fabrics from Revolution and Crypton that provide unprecedented levels of environmentally friendly moisture, stain, bacteria, and odor protection for all of your home’s furnishings. We are also your source for everything décor for your home, including lighting fixtures, lamps, wall décor, mirrors, wall art, home accessories, and more. At Amish Excellence, we invite you to experience our uncompromised quality in furnishings, craftsmanship, a full line of fashion-forward home décor, combined with our signature design and sales expertise. The Need for Speed

nyone who has ever spent any time at all in a salon knows that there are distinctively different speeds operators can work. This month we will discuss how a slow or a fast stylist can affect your visit to the salon. The first speed is, of course, slow. Some people just naturally move slower than others, and this natural tendency just results in you spending more time in their chair. Some stylists are slow because of their cutting technique. Precision cutters almost always tend to be slower than free form cutters. The uniformity of this method and its

commitment to every hair on the head being exact can sometimes unjustly label a stylist as being slow. Also, talkers can be quite slow. Some stylists have the ability to carry on a conversation and still be able to focus on their technical skills, while others must completely halt the procedure in order to engage in the conversation. The latter generally has a tendency to be a little slow. The last type of slow operators are the overbookers. The overbookers are the stylists that have multiple guests going at the same time and can often run into complications that can make the transition times off, which results into sitting

and waiting for the chair to empty for your turn. Fast operators can also impact your choice in stylists. As was mentioned earlier, there are some Brian K. Whitehead people who do everything Managing Partner fast. They walk fast, talk The Village Salon fast, and, as a result, they are usually very fast doing The Village Salon hair. Also as before, the free 222 Village Square form cutters have a tendency in Tellico Village to be faster than the preci865-458-9332 sion cutters. The free form thevillagesalon@aol.com method focuses more on the natural fall of the hair and usually has a more casual and random shape. As with stylists, our guests will have different speeds at which they wish to enjoy their visit. If a guest is time sensitive, a slow operator might produce an anxious visit for them. On the other hand, someone looking forward to a nice, slow afternoon at the salon might feel rushed out by an effective fast operator. By all means, always let your operator know if you are ever in a time sensitive situation, and also let them know if you are looking forward to a nice relaxing visit to the salon. How they accommodate those requests will let you know if your stylist can operate at a speed that you are comfortable with. Thanks to everyone who helps provide fodder for this column, and should you have any questions on how to enjoy your visits, please consult with your salon professional.

Storage Wars: Don’t Live It in Your House

W

hile you may enjoy watching the TV show Storage Wars, it’s definitely not fun to be living a storage war! Living in your own storage war at home means you’re constantly battling for space and organization to store things, especially in your closets. Piles of shoes on the floor, shirts and sweaters thrown chaotically Including drawer space on a shelf, and a jumbled in your closet saves time mess of scarves and belts getting dressed, since on a spare hanger. And of clothing items are all in course we all have clothes one location. stuffed in our closet we don’t wear – we’re just hoping that someday we can fit into them again! Here are a few practical tips on being more organized and sharing a closet space with your spouse:

Stay on Your Side of the Closet Respecting one another’s space and belongings is key to maintaining shared closet harmony. Make an effort to keep your area of the closet tidy, and don’t let your collection of workout clothes or jeans overflow into your partner’s area.

No mater the size of your closet or budget, call Tailored Living of Knoxville to give you a design that maximizes your storage space and budget! Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

Her Side vs. His Side Sharing a master closet is nearly impossible when a couple’s clothes are mixed together. It’s often confusing and definitely frustrating as you struggle to find your clothes. And yes, typically women need more space for their clothing and accessories. Women have tall boots, ankle-high boots, longer dresses, knee-length dresses, and purses. All these items need dedicated space in the closet. Many couples create a visual “dividing line” in their closet to clearly indicate who has what side, such as a double set of drawers in the middle if you’re sharing the space fifty-fifty, or the woman gets an additional wall for hanging items.

Avoid the Back-and-Forth Routine to the Bedroom Having drawers in your closet for socks, underwear, jewelry, and other items means you don’t have to go back and forth from the closet to the bedroom dresser. This saves you valuable time getting dressed, and you don’t wake up your spouse if he/she gets up later in the morning. New houses now have larger master closets to accommodate space for drawers.

Use Vertical Storage Space

Pantry

Garage

If you have ceilings nine feet or higher, taking advantage of vertical storage is important. Even small closets designed with taller cabinets will provide big storage. For many older homes with lower ceilings, the standard height of the top shelf is often at just over seven feet. Today’s new homes have ceilings that are nine feet or higher.

Why Should You Join Your Local Chamber of Commerce?

12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, February 2019

By Rob Preston, Athens Chamber of Commerce

O

ne of the questions I often get asked is why should I belong to the chamber? I thought in this article I would share some good reasons to belong. »» Membership brings credibility to your business. You can increase positive perception among consumers and business owners when you’re identified as a member of a chamber of commerce. »» Increase your visibility in the community. As a member of the chamber of commerce, you will be listed in the chamber newsletter, e-newsletter, on Facebook, and have the opportunity to be highlighted in other chamber publications. You also can grow your business by advertising with the chamber and sponsoring events. The chamber may also promote your grand opening/ribbon-cutting ceremony and assist with any public relations efforts. »» Make business contacts. The chamber’s most fundamental mission is to generate more business activity for the community. The chamber initiates more business-to-business commerce and more opportunities for networking and connecting local

professionals than is available through most other local organizations. »» Receive chamber newsletters. Newsletters provide new member information, interesting information about operating a local business, articles about the local community, a community calendar, and details about up-and-coming chamber events, among other things.

Legally Blonde The Musical Auditions at The Arts Center in Athens

A

thens Community Theatre (ACT) presents Legally Blonde The Musical, music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, book by Heather Hach, based on the novel by Amanda Brown and the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer motion picture. Show dates for Legally Blonde The Musical are Fridays and Saturdays, February 15, 16, 22, and 23, at 7 pm and Sundays, February 17 and 24, at 2 pm at The Arts Center in Athens. A fabulously fun award-winning musical based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde The Musical, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. Action-packed and exploding with memorable songs and dynamic dances, this musical is so much fun, it should be illegal! Macy Rexroad makes her ACT debut as Elle Woods, as does Christian Luithle, who plays Warner. Other lead roles are played by ACT veterans Tyler Peaden (Emmet), Dave Siklosi (Professor Callahan), and Leslie Arnold (Paulette), a long-time ACT volunteer making her first on-stage appearance in this production.

ACT is pleased to welcome a number of newcomers in this production: Chrissy Baker, Rachel Brannen, Ashley Copeland, Matthew Crabtree, Larae Graves, Cord Jones, Lindsay Markham, Brittany Morrow, Jonah Nelson, Sara Peglow, Audrina Rekittke, Kristin Schrader, Katie Sumner, Kanykei Usubelieva all make their ACT debut, along with their canine friends Rascal Fox (“Bruiser” Week 1) and Miss Elizabeth Bennett (Bruiser Week 2). The cast is rounded out by return ACT performers, including Emma Brannen, Ben Burchfield, Trey Byrge, Bethany Carideo, Blake Chastain, Art Kimball, Rebecca Nelson, Claire Offutt, David Offutt, Miriam Offutt, Coltyn Parks, Colby Pilkey, and Jenny Yates. Legally Blonde The Musical is directed by ACT veteran directing duo, Melonie Carideo and Ellen Kimball. Traci McKenzie is assistant director and Julie Offutt stage manager. The Arts Center is located at 320 North White Street in downtown Athens. For more information, call 423-745-8781.

»» Acquire customer referrals. Every day your local chamber receives calls from individuals and businesses looking for potential vendors, and chamber members typically recommend chamber members. »» Chamber events and programs. Chamber events and programs provide members with great opportunities to get to know new people and expand their prospect base. Chamber events are innovative and fun ways to help members meet potential customers, clients, and vendors and generate new business leads. »» Promotion and publicity. With a chamber membership, you can reach potential clients through member exclusive advertising and opportunities for business-to-business advertising and publicity. Most chamber membership fees are very small considering everything you receive. With our chamber, I tell prospects to just give it a year, and if they’re not fully satisfied, I will refund their money. In 13 years, I’ve never had to refund anyone. Of course the more you put into something, the more you get out of it, and the chamber is no different. For more information about the Athens Chamber, call 423-7450334 or visit www.athenschamber.org.

Still Love These Leggings!

F

ebruary is always a perfect month to tell you about something you’ll love… Lyssé Leggings! When doing a fashion show or speaking with customers in the store, we love to introduce you to Lyssé… the legging that’s a little bit about wanting to be dressy but comfortable as well. If you’ve done any shopping in the past three years, then you already know that leggings and tunic tops are here to stay. Even though during the winter you’ve paired them with boots, we’re now thinking of transitioning to the next season. Ballet flats or heels are flattering with leggings also. Lyssé Leggings are a revolutionary combination of clothing and control for women of all shapes, sizes, and ages. Designed with a built-in tummy panel and a wide waistband, you’re left with a super smooth, slim silhouette, and it might be interesting to note they’re available in plus sizes as well! Endorsed by Kathie Lee on The Today Show, Lyssé Leggings are a perfect companion to all of the fabulous tunic tops available at The Lily Pad… still the number one look for spring 2019! It’s very rare a customer tries this legging on and doesn’t LOVE it – even those who think they can’t wear leggings for any reason… large calves, “muffin top,” large tummy, etc. We’re almost through the tough part of East Tennessee’s winter and ready to kick it up a notch as we head into springtime. Enjoy the interesting mix of color available at The Lily Pad – lots of coral and turquoise, as well as the new emerald green and surprising new orchid! Remember the special women in your life – wife, mom, sister, daughter – with a Valentine’s Day gift certificate from The Lily Pad! We are happy to ship to your home or office.

Random Acts of Flowers Knoxville Welcomes New Executive Director

R

andom Acts of Flowers (RAF) Knoxville kicked off the new year with a new face in the workshop! Mick Reed officially started his role as the new Executive Director on January 2, 2019. He brings with him a rich background of education and experience that will help RAF Knoxville bloom this year and in the years to come. Prior to joining Random Acts of Flowers, Mick was an Account Executive at WATE TV/WATE.com, and before that, he had a career in banking working for both large and small banks and credit unions here in Knoxville. In addition, Mick has been active in various non-profit organizations as a volunteer, board member, and board officer. “I am honored to be able to work with the hardworking staff and the great team of dedicated volunteers here at Random Acts of Flowers to further our mission,” said Mick. “I know that delivering moments of kindness through repurposed flowers really does have an impact on recipients’ outlook, optimism, and mental health, and I am glad to be part of that.” One of lasting impressions Mick took from his initial meetings with RAF founder and CEO, Larsen Jay, was Larsen telling him that giving flowers to people in a trying situation transcends all demographics. And, he has now seen this firsthand. “On my first trip out to deliver flowers, I noticed that no matter the person, their reaction was always the same – a big smile!” said Mick. As we start a new year and will soon be heading into the blossom of spring, Mick asks for your support. “Please consider supporting Random Acts of Flowers by volunteering or donating to our efforts,” he said. “You can help us deliver real moments of kindness and connection to those in our community that most need them!”

ENTERTAINMENT

“King Charles III” to Play On the Clarence Brown Mainstage February 6-24

T

he Clarence Brown Theatre kicks off the second half of the season with Michael Bartlett’s “King Charles III” running February 6-24 on the CBT mainstage. A Pay What You Can Preview performance, where patrons can name their own price, will be Wednesday, February 5. A free pre-show discussion with director John Sipes exploring the Shakespearean element will take place on February 7 from 6:30 to 7 pm in the Lab Theatre. A panel discussion entitled “Enemy of the People” will take place following the February 17th 2 pm matinee. This discussion will revolve around the issues of freedom of the press, protection of privacy, government authority, and more. The Open Captioned performance is Sunday, February 24, at 2 pm. In this “modern future history” play, Queen Elizabeth has died. Charles, the “King-in-waiting,” finally ascends the throne. Then, defying centuries of tradition, Charles boldly attempts to reassert the crown’s power in matters of government, landing himself – and his country – in a royal mess. Exploring power and betrayal, the drama reveals the people beneath the crowns as nuanced flesh and blood and turns a Shakespearean lens on relationships in the world’s most famous and exposed family. John Sipes (Director) is a Professor in the Department of Theatre at the University of Tennessee. Before joining the UT faculty, he was a Director and the Resident Movement Director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival for 15 seasons. Prior to his residency at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, he was a Director and Movement Director for the Illinois Shakespeare Festival for 12 seasons and served as the Festival’s Artistic Director for five seasons. Directing credits include productions at the Clarence Brown Theatre, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Milwaukee Rep, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, the Illinois Shakespeare Festival, and others. Little Engine Playhouse Expands 2019 Tour

T

he Little Engine Playhouse Tour, presented by Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, brings another delightful children’s book to life with expanded dates and new locations in 2019. Audiences will enjoy the theatrical adaptation of “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon,” which delivers a positive, anti-bullying message. When Molly Lou Melon starts a new school, Ronald Durkin, the school bully, makes fun of her on her very first day. He mocks her teeth, clumsiness, and small frame. With advice from her grandmother, Molly Lou shows Ronald her perceived flaws are really her talents. Molly Lou is an example of overcoming obstacles and self-acceptance. “The anti-bullying message in this book is so important in today’s world,” said Natacha Hylton, Dollywood Entertainment Manager. “We all felt like this was a great

(From L to R) Sauni Rinehart as Yvonne Fouchet, Steve Allen as Albert Donay, Marlyce-Jean Dezzutti as Gabrielle Buonocelli, Len Willis as Andre Bouville, Sue Aukerman as Mariette Levieux, and James Fisher as Claude Pichon.

T

he Dinner Party, the first Players performance of 2019, will be performed on Thursday through Saturday, February 21-23, and Thursday through Sunday, February 28 & March 1-3. All shows begin at 7:30 pm except for the matinee on Sunday, March 3, which begins at 1:30 pm. In this hilarious story directed by Steve Mayberry, five people are invited to dine at a first-rate restaurant in Paris. They do not know who the other guests will be or why they have been invited. Tossed together in a private dining room, they have a sneaking suspicion that this unorthodox dinner party will forever change their lives. It is eventually revealed that the guests at this dinner were once married and divorced from one another!

It is said that Neil Simon himself married five times and drew upon his own experiences to create the thematic materials for this farce-turned drama. John Ritter and Henry Winkler starred as Pouchon and Donay in the wildly successful Kennedy Center production and on Broadway in 2000-2001. The cast includes Sauni Rinehart as Yvonne Fouchet, Len Willis as Andre Bouville, Sue Aukerman as Mariette Levieux, James Fisher as Claude Pichon, Steve Allen as Albert Donay, and Marlyce-Jean Dezzutti as Gabrielle Buonocelli. Steve Allen also is producing. Reserved seats are $21 and are on sale on the Tellico Community Players website at www. TellicoCommunityPlayhouse.org.

Cynthia Blackman-Santana

February 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 17A

by

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

I

t’s often been said that behind every great man is a great woman. This is literally the case with Carlos Santana with his wife of eight years, Cindy Blackman-Santana. Cindy is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s touring and studio drummers. Astute music fans will know Cindy as a phenomenal musician who stands quite well on her own. Having cut her musical teeth on hard-core jazz, she has played with a long list of jazz artists, including Sam Rivers, Angela Bofill, and Sonny Simmons. She’s also quite the rock drummer, first hitting it big as Lenny Kravitz’s drummer and performing on his huge 1993 hit “Are You Gonna Go My Way.” She’s pretty much played with him ever since. Her work as a rock drummer invaded her personal life when, in December 2010, she married Carlos Santana. The marriage is rocking along beautifully both personally and musically. I recently caught up with Cindy to chat about the new CDs and life with Carlos. At the beginning of my chat with Cindy, I congratulated her on her recent wedding anniversary and asked her if it has been anything at all like she envisioned it eight years ago. “Um, no, it’s not. Ha! Ha! It’s not in some ways, and in other ways, it’s gloriously like I envisioned it. I really like monogamy, because I love growing with a person. I’ve always been that way my whole life. I like that. I like seeing the growth of a person – doing things together, growing with somebody. We’ve certainly done a lot of that. It’s a beautiful thing, because we still have our freshness. We still have playfulness, and we still have fun.” About the new CDs coming out, Cindy said: “He’s got a great CD coming out called Africa Speaks, and it’s with the Santana band plus this incredible singer who Carlos came across by the name of Buika (pronounced BWEE-kah), and she’s SO amazing! This music, as the title would suggest, is based off of a lot of music that Carlos heard that is from

Africa – with some different kinds of African rhythms, but also with music that comes from Africa that was initially influenced by American music. American music – or classical music, which is jazz – comes in part from African music. We took the rhythms of Africa, and we took the harmonies of Europe and developed on both of those things and expounded on both of those things and created jazz music, which is what I call American classical music or American CLASSIC music. Carlos heard all those things and took them and did something else with them. It’s a nice back and forth influence, if you will, for what we come up with for this record. It’s really incredible. “That record is coming out. Prior to that, my record will be released. I’m really, really proud of the music that we’re doing. I recorded a lot of music with some musicians. There’s SO MUCH music at this point that I have basically two sides of the record. One is going to be, for the most part, instrumental. The second side is featuring my vocal debut. Those songs are more on a commercial/pop side, where the instrumental part is very electric and kind of a jazz/rock/ funk vibe. Both sides feature a guitar-heavy roster. “John McLaughlin is on one track on each side, so he’s on one instrumental and one vocal track. Carlos is on both sides. Vernon Reid is on the instrumental side, as is Kurt Hammet. So it’s really got those heavy hitters on guitar. “On the second side, with the main vocal things, they were produced by Narada Michael Walden, who is in

his own right a great drummer, but he’s also a very great producer as well. Narada is very sweet! A very kind individual. Wonderful to work with.” How does Cindy want to be remembered, and what does she hope her legacy is? “I have a song on my new record called ‘Change Is in Your Hands.’ I believe that it’s a true title. I believe that we can all make change happen, and we’re all responsible for it happening or not happening. I want to be an instrument for change for the good; change for the better; change for the higher level of awareness; change for the higher level of everyone’s life circumstances. It’s not the ‘crabs in a barrel,’ and I know that that exists, especially in our society. But I don’t take on the energy of the crab in the barrel. I just take the energy of upgrading and uplifting. I’m not going to be the crab that’s going.” You can read the extended interview with Cindy at www.boomerocity.com the learn latest about her at www. cindyblackmansantana.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

A Tax Saving Opportunity – Qualified Charitable Contribution

A

s a consequence of the new tax law, fewer taxpayers will be itemizing expenses because of the doubling of the standard deduction and reduction of deductions allowed. This means fewer charitable contributions will be deductible and the tax benefits from making charitable gifts will be lower. However, a substantial tax saving opportunity is available to taxpayers who are over 70.5 years old. It is known as a qualified charitable deduction (QCD). Charitable contributions are included on Schedule A, Itemized Deductions. A taxpayer deducts the greater of their total itemized deductions or the standard deduction. For tax year 2017, the standard deduction for a married couple both over age 65 and filing a joint tax return was $15,200. This amount has been increased to $ 26,600 for tax year 2018. Therefore, a qualifying taxpayer can get the benefit of the higher standard deduction in addition to a Qualified Charitable Contribution Taxpayers who have reached age 70.5 are generally required to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) from their Individual Retirement Account (IRA) annually. If they wish to make a charitable contribution, they should consider making a charitable donation directly to the charity from their traditional individual retirement account. The charitable transfer can satisfy their required minimum distribution and lower their taxes if properly structured.

Taxpayers may transfer up to $100,000 per year to a qualified charitable organization. The contribution is not included in adjusted gross income and can provide additional tax benefits. To qualify for the tax-free treatment, it must be a direct transfer from the IRA custodian to the charity. It does not qualify as a tax-free transfer if you withdraw the money first and then make a contribution to a charity. The IRA owner cannot receive any benefit from the charitable contribution and any small gift or reward from the charity can make the entire contribution ineligible for QCD treatment. A QCD, however, can be used to satisfy a pledge the IRA owner made to the charity. All the regular rules for substantiating charitable contributions must be followed. This means the IRA owner should have documentation in writing from the charity acknowledging the amount and date of the contribution. QCDs can be made only to public charities that are eligible for charitable contribution deductions under the regular IRS rules. Not eligible for QCD treatment are gifts made to private foundations, donor-advised funds, and charitable gift annuities. The tax professionals at WarrenJackson can assist you in analyzing the tax benefits of a Qualified Charitable Deduction and make sure the transaction complies with IRS rules and regulations. First, visit the shop and discover fresh cut flowers, florals, women’s apparel, designer-inspired jewelry, home décor, and gifts galore that are perfect for just about every occasion. Secondly, visit the all-new Upstairs at the Mansion restaurant, now called Kelly D’s Upstairs at the Mansion after Kelly Raper Dalton, our new Executive Chef. Kelly, a lifelong resident of Monroe County, discovered her love for the culinary arts at an early age, spending many hours in the family kitchen with her mom, Pat, who was an excellent cook. Kelly’s actual career as a chef started soon after she catered a large wedding for a family member. Self-taught, Kelly’s experiences have consisted mainly of catering weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and special events, in addition to restaurant management. Kelly’s other hobbies include singing, horseback riding, and bowling. Kelly’s dream, which has been to own a tea room style restaurant with a southern flare, will be realized in February when Jack

leases Kelly D’s Upstairs at the Mansion, (formerly Upstairs at the Mansion). Kelly D’s Upstairs at the Mansion will open for business on Monday, February 4, after her Grand Opening on Saturday, February 2. Kelly D’s Upstairs at the Mansion Grand Opening on Saturday, February 2, from 2 to 5 pm will feature samples of many of the featured menu entrees Kelly will offer, including homemade soups, salads, sandwiches, paninis, and teas – all served with a southern flair. Plan Today to Save Taxes Tomorrow By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

A

re you ready for a surprise? You could be in a higher tax bracket when you are retired and reach age 70 than when you are working at age 60. On the face of it, it seems counterintuitive, since surely you would have less income in retirement. But for retirees who have built a nice nest egg in their tax-deferred retirement plans, the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) dictated by the IRS at age 70½ can create enough taxable income to push them into a higher tax bracket – and create a Medicare premium surcharge to boot. Tax planning can save the day! The window of time between retirement and age 70½ is a golden opportunity to convert a portion of your taxable retirement accounts into tax-free Roth IRAs. Your taxable income may drop a significant amount in the year after you retire, especially if you defer Social Security and delay withdrawals from your taxable retirement accounts. Structured correctly, you may be in the 12% or 22% bracket and may even be in the 0% capital gains bracket for some period, too. Yes, you’ll owe tax on the dollar amount you convert to Roth IRAs, but by measuring how much you can convert and still stay in the lower brackets, you pay less tax to create this forever tax-free asset. Once you’ve

Tax planning can save the day! The window of time between retirement and age 70 1/2 is a golden opportunity to convert a portion of your taxable retirement accounts into tax-free Roth IRAs. held the Roth for five years, you can withdraw money tax-free (and it’s not counted in the Medicare surcharge calculation, either). Or just leave the account to grow, since Roths are not subject to RMD withdrawal requirements. Plan ahead for this strategy, because you’ll need a combination of cash and brokerage accounts for low-tax cash flow to live on while you’re using your low tax bracket years for taxable Roth conversions. Remember, even if you do need to sell appreciated stocks or mutual funds, you may owe no (or minimal) capital gains tax in these lower brackets. Even if you didn’t need another reason to act, I’ll still give you one: Taxes are on sale under our new tax code! Through 2025, tax rates are probably the lowest of your lifetime. A multi-year Roth IRA conversion strategy is

complicated, so don’t go it alone. Give us a call to arrange a complimentary meeting. Fashions of the Gilded Age Recreated by Oscar-winning Designer Highlight Biltmore’s New Exhibition A Vanderbilt House Party – The Gilded Age opens February 8th

This colorized version of a photograph from the Vanderbilt archives depicts afternoon tea on the Loggia of Biltmore House with the Vanderbilts, May 1903. (L to R) Edith Vanderbilt, Mademoiselle Rambaud (Edith Vanderbilt’s former chaperone), Lila Vanderbilt Webb (George Vanderbilt’s sister), Mary Webb (Lila Webb’s sister in law), Isabella Stewart Gardner, William Blodgett II, and George Vanderbilt.

John Bright, Academy Award-winning costume designer.

Bright works on a recreated dress with Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s Curator of Interpretation.

Klingner compares samples of tweed for recreated clothing to be featured.

Detail of a 1903-era gown belonging to Edith Vanderbilt alongside of the archival photograph that inspired it.

An Immersive Experience “This exhibition is unlike any we’ve ever done before,” said Leslie Klingner, Biltmore’s curator of interpretation. “You will get a sense of what life was truly like at Biltmore.” That sense of the Gilded-Age era is enhanced by a new Premium Audio Guided Tour. This component of the exhibition combines innovative 360 degree sound techniques with stories told from the perspectives of those who lived and worked at Biltmore in the early 1900s. This creates a unique, immersive audio-visual experience for guests. Klingner and Ellen Rickman, Biltmore’s director of museum services, traveled between London and Asheville during the course of two years to work with Bright

to recreate the Vanderbilt wardrobe, researching fashion magazines of the era and studying archival photography and portraits from Biltmore’s collection in great detail in order to create the designs found in the exhibition. “To bring these photographs that have been in black and white for more than a century into vivid, living color representations has been incredible,” said Klingner. Among the artwork, tapestries, and antiques in Biltmore House and the Vanderbilt collection, there are few pieces of clothing from the Gilded Age-era. Clothing tends to deteriorate through the years. “This exhibition is like we’re replacing a piece of the collection that was missing,” said Dini Cecil Pickering, great-granddaughter of George Vanderbilt who was Biltmore’s founder. Biltmore and Bright

This is not the first time Biltmore and Bright have teamed up. The collaboration dates back to when the estate began making plans to display a selection of costumes Bright created for the wildly popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.” Biltmore hosted the premiere showing of Dressing Downton: Changing Fashion for Changing Times in 2015. The exhibition then traveled to several U.S. cities. legant fashions worn by the Vanderbilts recreated by Oscar-winning designer, John Bright, will fill the grand rooms of Biltmore House when Biltmore’s newest exhibition, A Vanderbilt House Party – The Gilded Age, opens February 8 and runs through May 27. In collaboration with Biltmore curators, Bright and his team at Cosprop, London meticulously recreated fashions favored by the Vanderbilts and their guests at turn-of-thecentury celebrations known as house parties. Throughout his career, Bright has received 12 Academy Award nominations and a win for Best Costume Design in 1985 for the Merchant Ivory adaption of “A Room with a View.” The film starred Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, and Daniel Day-Lewis.

Guests visiting the estate may also tour the estate’s gardens, explore hiking and biking trails, dine at one of seven restaurants, and spend time at Antler Hill Village & Winery. The Winery offers complimentary tastings from among more than 20 of Biltmore’s handcrafted award-winning varieties. Additionally, Biltmore’s winemaker has created a special red dessert wine, Mariporta, for the new exhibition. Endangered African Painted Dog Pups Born at Zoo Knoxville

E

leven endangered African painted dog pups were born at Zoo Knoxville on January 2nd. The pups are currently being monitored by video camera in their den and appear to be healthy and thriving. This is the second litter for mom Swiss and dad Puzzle. Zoo Knoxville is one of 34 zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) working to save their species as part of the African Painted Dog Species Survival Plan, a collaborative effort that works on a national level to maintain a healthy genetic population. Species Survival Plans work to ensure a reserve population of endangered animals that are threatened in their native range with the long-term goal of supporting those populations. African painted dogs are endangered, with only 6,600 estimated to remain in the wild in Africa. Their numbers continue to decline as a result of fragmentation of their habitat, conflict with humans, and infectious disease. In the U.S., approximately 160 painted dogs are housed in 34 accredited zoos. “The work being done to save animals in AZA-accredited zoos is one of the largest conservation initiatives on the planet,” said Lisa New, President and CEO. “These painted dog pups, born here in Knoxville, are part of a bigger picture, and we are proud to be a part of the future for this species. Their arrival is also a testament to the care and expertise of our staff.” The pups are expected to begin venturing out of their den at about one month of age. Their arrival brings the total number of African painted dogs to 18 at Zoo Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville features exhibits of wild animals in natural habitats and is world renowned for its efforts in conservation and species survival. Zoo Knoxville is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. The zoo is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. udweiser is a gentle giant of a dog. He is a black and tan Rottweiler mix, weighing about 85-90 pounds. We estimate his age at a little over two years old. Although he was brought into the shelter as a stray in early December, Budweiser is housebroken and knows his manners when walking on a leash. He is a big lovable goofball, friendly, and eager to play with other dogs, both male and female, and shows no food aggression. He is calm, does not jump on people, and is friendly to everyone as he struts through the shelter and acts as our “ambassador.” He loves being outdoors and would do well in a house with active children. Budweiser is anxious to get his forever home as soon as possible so he can start loving his new family.

Merlin is a large energetic Labrador Retriever/Dalmatian mix. He weighs about 65 pounds, and we estimate him to be about two years old. Although no one has claimed him, his gentle demeanor and good manners indicate that he was someone’s pet. He walks nicely on a leash, sits

and gives a paw on command, and is a gentle and handsome big boy. Merlin is almost completely white with the black Dalmatian spots. He is not animal or food aggressive and is looking to find his new family. Hogan and Sneakers are a bonded pair and will be adzpted to one home together, as Sneakers is Hogan’s companion cat and BFF (Best Furry Friend). Hogan is a twoyear-old former feral Russian Blue mix. He and Sneakers can be found most often hanging out on a cat tree in front of a window. His meow is a funny chirping/trilling sound. He is a sweet, lovable guy – just a bit fearful and submissive but becoming more affectionate every day. Patience and kindness is what he is used to and needs in his adoptive home. He knows his name and loves to be scratched and petted by his foster mom. One day a kitten named Sneakers came into his life. Sneakers is a 9-month-old gray/white ticked-striped tabby with four white paws. She is a very silly, lovable purr machine who loves to be held like a baby. In a very short time together, by imitation, Hogan has learned to “cat” from Sneakers. He loves to play and wrestle with her, he has learned that a lap is a great place to sit, he purrs when being petted, he winds his body around human legs at feeding time, and ear, chin, and cheek scratches ROCK! No young children (they move too fast) and no other pets, please. Their foster home is a quiet place, and they are not used to strangers (and loud noises) and will hide temporarily when someone new comes into the house. Hogan and Sneakers have perfect litter box manners and both are INDOOR ONLY cats. They are both altered, combo tested negative, up-to-date on vaccinations/Revolution flea (and heartworm) preventive, and microchipped. Hogan and Sneakers are currently at their foster home. Please call the shelter to arrange a meeting with these two wonderful cats.

Looking for an independent kitty? Eclipse (about one year old) would make a wonderful farm/barn or office cat. He likes to be outside and stick to his own schedule. He would make a great mouser. He tolerates being held and petted on occasion but would prefer to limit his contact to just that. He was brought in as a stray. A kind, knowledgeable person had gotten him neutered and ear tipped, but no one has come in to claim him. He is up-todate on all vaccinations and testing and is ready to go home. We have a special “Barn Cat” program for adoptions of cats like Eclipse. Visit our website at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org and click on programs to see the application and more information. Come visit the shelter and see these and all the other pets we have available for adoption. While you’re there, please remember their true purrsonality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. Their kennel is now their “safe place,” and some struggle a bit when removed from it. That does NOT mean they aren’t sweet, loving dogs. It means they are uncomfortable or scared. Take the time to meet each dog. Pet them while they are still in their kennel, and let them get used to you for a few moments before you take him/her for a walk around the shelter one-on-one. Once you get them home and they feel secure, all will be well. All animals adopted are spayed or neu-

his event is a double bill featuring the chamber opera “Beneath Suspicion” and a performance of the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn (from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride).” The event will be held March Lindsey Fuson 14-16 at 7:30 pm at Blount Mansion, located at 200 W. Hill Avenue in Knoxville. Beneath Suspicion is a one-act opera by Knoxville Native composer Jesse Ayers. It is based on a true, little-known story of two daring, American women who played on prevailing gender and racial stereoDenisha Pompey types to fight slavery by spying for the Union during the Civil War. Elizabeth Van Lew, a passionate abolitionist known around Richmond as “Crazy Bet,” is the middle-aged daughter of a recently deceased, wealthy Richmond slave owner. Upon her father’s death, she frees her Elena Stabile family’s slaves, including a young household servant named Mary. Bet, recognizing Mary’s extreme intelligence, sends her to Philadelphia to a Quaker School to be educated, after which Mary returns to Richmond to work in the Van Lew home as a free woman. Mary has a photographic memory. She can memorize documents verbatim in one quick reading, as well as repeat lengthy conversations word for word. As the war breaks out, Mary is in her early 20s, Bet, her 40s. Though Richmond is the capital of the Confederacy, about half of its inhabitants are Union sympathizers. Bet, a firebrand, uses her contacts to set up a spy ring to report Confederate movements to the Union military. Her information is so reliable that her coded messages go directly General Ulysses S. Grant. This works imagines a key scene in the lives of these two women: The crisis moment when Mary must decide if she will risk her life to undertake the daring plan she believes God has revealed to her or if she will shrink back to maintain her safety and personal freedom. Both women were inducted into the Military Intelligence Hall of Fame in the 1990s. Elizabeth Van Lew will be played by Lindsey Fuson, soprano, and Mary will be played by Denisha Pompey, soprano. “Good morning, darling, the sun has just come up. It is a beautiful morning…” So begins a letter from 1944 that 1st Lt. George W. Honts wrote his wife, Evelyn Honts, while deployed during World War II. The text to these letters has been set to music by composer Alan Smith in the song cycle “Vignettes: Letters from George to Evelyn, from the Private Papers of a World War II Bride.” Performance will be by Elena Stabile, soprano. Tickets are $30 for adults and $15 students. For more information, visit www.MarbleCityOpera.com.

Cumberland Piano Trio

he Oak Ridge Civic Music Association – home of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, Chorus and Chamber Music Series – continues its 74th season, Distinctly Oak Ridge, with concerts and events from February through April. “Oak Ridge and Oak Ridgers are unique, and ORCMA’s concerts must meet a standard of excellence and innovation for both long-time listeners and new listeners,” said Dan Allcott, Music Director. Allcott’s Cumberland Piano Trio performs February 9 at 7:30 pm at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church and will introduce the audience to innovative carbon fiber string instruments. “The term ‘innovative’ is often used too loosely, but as we learn more and more about the demand for carbon fiber musical instruments, we begin to understand how truly innovative they are,” said Lisa Muci Eckhoff, Executive Director. “Anyone with a love of science, music, and the environment will be fascinated by this concert. We’re thrilled to feature instruments provided by Oak Ridge-based company, Pulcir Music, and to host Amit Naskar, Senior Researcher and Leader of the Carbon & Composites Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, who will join the musicians in the pre-concert talk at 7 pm.” The trio will perform music by Dmitri Shostakovich, David Baker, and Antonín Dvořák. Adult general admission to the concert is $25. Carbon Fiber Pairings is a student-friendly pre-concert dinner with taco bar and carbon-ated beverages, and attendees will have the opportunity to touch and “try” the carbon fiber instruments from 5:30 to 6:45 pm. Adults are $20, and youth 18 and under attend all activities free. You can sponsor a student for $10. On February 16, the all-day music festival from Rock to Bach returns. Held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, this fun, fundraising event treats attendees to multiple genres of live music performed on two stages throughout the day. “Doors open at 10 am, and Kelle Jolly kicks off the morning performances at 10:30,” said Lois McKeever, ORCMA volunteer and event planner. “Lunch and snacks will be available for purchase onsite, and a silent auction runs from 10:30 am to 6 pm. All proceeds support the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.” Adult tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. A family ticket is available for $30. Children 5-18 years are $5, and children under five years attend free. Call 865483-5569 by February 14th to RSVP for the $50 catered Celebration Dinner with wine, hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment by Indus Tennessee. “The Big Galut(e) Klezmer Ensemble is a group we’ve wanted to present in Oak Ridge for quite some time,” said Bill Schwenterly, Chairperson of the Chamber Music Series, unique to the Greater East Tennessee region. “The five-member ensemble will wow listeners with spice and variety and will share insights into the history of Klezmer music and its instrumentation during the 7 pm pre-concert talk and throughout the performance.” The ensemble performs on March 16 at 7:30 pm at Pollard Auditorium. “Something new is always being created in Oak Ridge, and the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus capture this spirit with a regional premier of Lucas Richman’s Symphony, This Will Be Our Reply, on March 30 at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center,” said Allcott. The piece is “a call to heal the world” and is based on Leonard Bernstein’s speech “An Artist’s Response to Violence.” It will be sung in Hebrew. Anyone interested in joining the Oak Ridge Chorus is invited to contact the ORCMA office at 865-483-5569 or via email at office@ orcma.org. All are welcome. Eroica, Beethoven’s Sym-

Contact the ORICL office at 865-481-8222 for more information. Watch for details on a concert-themed event prior to the concert. The Oak Ridge Chorus presents its final concert of the season, Bach to Broadway, on April 13 at 7:30 pm at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. Two intermissions, wine, and hors d’oeuvres complement the silent auction, with proceeds benefiting ORCMA. Adult tickets are $15. “Always an enjoyable evening, the chorus will delight you with Jesu, meine Freude, and then Broadway tunes,” said Jaclyn Johnson, Chorus Director. “This concert clearly shows the versatility of our volunteer Oak Ridge Chorus!” Allcott rounds out the 2018–2019 season with Cham-

ber Delights & Dances, featuring Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Karen Kartal and Principal Oboist Ayca Yayman in solo spotlights. The delightful concert on April 27 at 7:30 pm at First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge concludes with a year-end reception with the musicians. The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association gratefully acknowledges its audience members, volunteers, advertisers, venues, contributors, and sponsors. ORCMA is a participant in the Penny4Arts initiative, enabling youth 18 and under to attend all ORCMA concerts for free during the 2018–2019 season. You Can Take It with You …Your Organized Closet

6B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, February, 2019

Y

our closet affects you more than you realize; after all, it is where the day begins. For most, the feeling of relaxation when entering a favorite resort is the goal for home décor. Your closet is no exception. It is such an important part of your day. If it is a welcoming, organized place, it is easy to get dressed and be out the door for what lies ahead. If clutter is the theme of your closet – along with inadequate storage – then time is wasted looking for the day’s outfit. It takes more time to coordinate the image that will impress everyone you will encounter in the coming hours when there is no order to your closet. Stress builds as the hunt is on for shoes buried under a pile of clothes, and once stress starts, you know it will only continue. The first tip of an organized closet is to have a hamper so dirty laundry is not lying on the floor. Organize your closet so you can go shopping every day in your very own store. Have shirts, pants, skirts, suits, and shoes all in their own department and neatly arranged. Grouping is the key to organization. If your favorite ensembles are grouped together, you are limited in choices. Once you create your “store” by organizing “like with like,” it is easier to see new combinations and your wardrobe choices will increase. When traveling, packing is easy when your closet is serene and orderly. Having luggage handy, kept in the closet, makes packing quick as you go through your own personal “store” assembling everything needed for your trip. You will have more time on your trip by recreating your organized storage at your destination. Digging through the suitcase can be unnerving; take your closet with you and spend a few minutes unpacking upon arriving at your destination. Sort “like with like” at the hotel just as in your closet. Then you know exactly where your garments are for the day, whether you’re going to a meeting or sightseeing.

When choosing a design style, think of your favorite place, retail store, or destination when starting a remodel of your closet. Inspiration may come from a trip to the beach, the mountains, or travel overseas. You can take it with you and replicate your favorite experience. oo Knoxville commemorated the legacy of Ted Beattie, the zoo’s second executive director, by naming the central part of the African animal area in his honor. The Ted Beattie Heart of Africa was unveiled at a reception hosted by Natalie and Jim Haslam and was attended by family, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Beattie and supporters of Zoo Knoxville. The surprise announcement was made in the newly-christened area of the zoo that is home to animals native to Africa and designed to give guests the experience of exploring an African forest. Heart of Africa was constructed under Beattie’s leadership and the zoo’s first modern exhibit featuring natural habitats. Ted Beattie’s brilliant marketing and promotional skills raised the zoo’s profile in the community during his tenure from 1987 until 1992, and he impressed upon the business leaders and elected officials the importance of supporting it. Under his leadership, the zoo added many new departments and gained national recognition for its conservation work. “Ted laid the foundation for Zoo Knoxville to become a modern and forward-thinking zoo,” said Lisa New, President and CEO of Zoo Knoxville President. “What he put in motion 30 years ago was the zoo’s evolution into a conservation or-

ganization working to save animals from extinction on an international level.” “Ted Beattie inspired the community to share his vision of what our zoo could be,” said Jim Haslam. “He set high goals, saying we should be a great zoo doing extraordinary things. Today our remarkable zoo has achieved his vision.” Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Knoxville’s largest attraction, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Currently the zoo is open from 10 am to 4 pm daily. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. For more information, visit www. zooknoxville.org.

February

his weather is giving me a headache. Seriously. These temperature swings are hard on us and hard on our plants. The early winter was mild enough that I have daffodils ready to bloom, Lenten Roses that are blooming, and new growth on evergreens. Those plants are not going to be happy when we hit 18 tomorrow night! The extended forecast is for a roller coaster ride, so be aware that you will need to watch for damage this spring. No, there is nothing you can do except add mulch if you don’t have three inches. This help keeps the soil temperature more stable. February is a frustrating month for gardeners. It tends to have our most brutal weather (I am sure those of you from the north find my view of brutal amusing), and I hate to be cold. My glimpses of my yard usually just depress me because there is so much to do! We usually have some nice days, however, so you will have a couple of chances to go out and get your gardening fix. My main chore this month is pruning. Summer flowering plants like butterfly bush, Rose of Sharon, Limelight Hydrangeas, and Annabelle Hydrangeas can be done now. If you have fruit trees and blueberries, they need to be pruned this month. Most experts suggest waiting until March to prune roses, but I have to do mine this month, too, if I want to get them done. They never seem to mind. Grasses can also be cut back now, but you will need to leave enough of the old growth to protect the new growth as it emerges. Six to 12 inches is usually good enough for taller grasses and three inches for the short ones. I just run over our Liriope with the lawnmower set on its highest setting. Taller grasses are best done by tying the stalks with twine and then using hedge shears (or a chainsaw) to cut below the tied area. Use gloves when handling grasses! Some of those blades will shred your hands. During the nasty days, you can get your garden fix indoors with your houseplants. Yours are probably due for a shower or sponge bath because dust accumulates on their leaves during the winter and clogs their pores. Smaller plants can be placed in the sink and sprayed. Larger plants can be placed in the shower. If that isn’t possible, use a washcloth or sponge (or Swiffer) to clean them up. While they are having their spa day, check for insects or other problems and treat if necessary. Sprinkle cinnamon on the soil to stop any fungus gnats, and use insecticidal soap or neem oil on other invaders. Mealybugs are resistant to insecticides, so alcohol is your best option for those. Alcohol cannot be used on fuzzy succulents; however, check with us if you

have questions. Do your houseplants need supplemental light? I have arranged mine under a couple of lamps to give them a boost. A florescent bulb is adequate, but our 5-leafplant growing friends are causing the price of grolights to drop. If you have several plants, it might be worth the cost to keep them healthy. Also, be careful to not overwater. Many houseplants go dormant, so they aren’t taking up as much water. Do any of your houseplants need to be bumped up to a larger pot, divided, or composted? If you are re-potting, here are some general guidelines: » It is usually best to only go up one size pot. It is also best to use a container that has a drainage hole. If yours does not, you will need to add gravel and horticultural charcoal to the bottom of the pot. In general, plastic pots are better for people who underwater and clay is better for those who overwater. Heavy pots are harder to move but are more stable if you have a large plant. Thicker pots provide more insulation for root balls and so are better for plants that are kept outdoors year-round. » Use the best quality potting soil you can afford. Cheap potting soil is the plant equivalent of living off beer and potato chips. » Loosen the root ball before replanting. If the pot is terribly rootbound, it may be best to remove the outer layer of roots entirely with a knife or saw. » I use a coffee filter in the bottom of my pots to keep the soil from washing through the drain hole. » If the thought of transplanting or dividing your plants causes you to have an anxiety attack, bring it in to us. We will be happy to do it for you. You can also give us a call and we will walk you through it. The other plant related thing you can do now is planning. Visualize what you would like to see when you look out the window and figure out how to make it happen. Stop by if you have questions or just need to bounce some ideas off us. We love to help you! On another subject entirely, have you been paying attention to the birds? They are cold, and their water is frozen. Keep your feeders full of high fat feed such as black oil sunflower seeds or suet, and try to make sure they have a water source. There are birdbath heaters if you have a bath that can be left outside all year. That’s all for this month. Hang in there folks, spring is coming! urprises come in all shapes and sizes, but there are two distinct types… good and bad. While good surprises can leave you feeling warm and fuzzy for years, bad surprises can wreak all kinds of havoc and inconvenience to your life. What’s the best surprise you ever received? I can think of a few that still evoke warm memories and a smile. Several years ago, my husband called to tell me to shower and change quickly. “Wear something nice but comfortable,” he said “Don’t worry about the kids; a sitter is on her way.” A limo driver whisked me away to a spa where I was pampered with a facial and a most needed body massage! Later that evening, the same driver shuttled me and several other ladies to a secret dinner where our husbands sang love songs quartet style and prepared a five-course meal for us to enjoy. I was the envy of all my friends that year, and I of course soaked up the attention! February is the time each year when we should take some time to create those lasting memories and do something extra for those we love. Dinner and a movie? Absolutely. But, don’t stop there. As a woman, I know we all love to feel special. We need those occasional “over the top” surprises that spice up our marriage and make us feel cherished. Each February we get numerous requests for surprise cleanings. We’ve cleaned while the misses was at work and while the mister has been sent out for some “man time.” Everyone loves a clean house, especially when you aren’t the one doing the cleaning. If you are struggling with what to do for the love of your life, let us help. We are experts at making everything sparkle and shine and helping you create the ambience in your home that fosters those coveted warm, happy feelings. Also, in the spirit of surprises, we have one of our own. Anyone that books a cleaning during February will get something special from our crew. Perhaps it’s an extra room cleaning or a deep-cleaned front porch. Each home is unique, but we look forward to surprising YOU and helping you surprise the one you love. Tip: If your partner is the type that needs a little help zeroing in on exactly what you want, you can shamelessly snip this article and put it on the fridge. I have even been known to leave articles open on the coffee table with portions highlighted, and it even worked… once. Give John a call at 865-567-1986 and schedule your cleaning (and surprise!) today. Surface Doc 865-567-1986 www.surfacedoc.com

amellia is a shrub prized for its showy flowers in the South’s winter landscape and its glossy evergreen leaves that stay a deep, shiny green all year. These woody plants, which can be rounded shrubs or rangy 20-foot trees, are native to Asia. When they first started gaining in popularity in America in the 1800s, they were thought of as hothouse bloomers or the darlings of the Southern garden, because the Japanese camellia (Camellia japonica) is only cold hardy to about 10 degrees. After decades of breeding with species from South Korea and Japan, hardier varieties are making their way north, and there are plenty of camellias that perform reliably well in Tennessee. Blooms can be as large as five inches across with yellow centers or full in the center with rounded overlapping petals, much like a rose. More than 30,000 cultivars of camellia have been named and introduced according to the American Camellia Society. Depending upon selection, they can vary from blooming in the fall, winter, or spring. Plants are rated as being early flowering (prior to January 1st), mid-season flowering (January through February), and late flowering (March or later). Keep in mind that bloom time can vary depending on environmental factors in your landscape such as sun, soil condition, and water. Once in bloom, flowers can last for a period of four to six weeks, but a hard freeze can burn the blooms, thus shortening their show. Bloom colors include shades of pink, red, lavender, white, and even multi-colored. Selections can also vary in size, growing to a height of 10 feet to 15 feet tall with a spread between six feet to 10 feet wide. Camellia likes an acidic soil (a soil pH below 7.0) with plenty of moisture, and good to excellent drainage is essential. Water as needed in the summer and in times of drought. Camellia will benefit from being fertilized in the spring with a fertilizer labeled for acid-loving shrubs. It thrives in a partial-shade location or a location with morning sun and afternoon shade, and it makes a good, large specimen plant. It can also be used in mixed screens in the garden. Only if needed, prune camellia within two months after it has finished blooming since next year’s flower buds will soon begin to develop. Camellias of old were famous for their lack of winter hardiness (to just USDA Cold Hardiness Zones 7-9 or 0 to 30 degrees Fahrenheit), but the group known as the Ackerman Hybrids buck that trend. William L. Ackerman with the USDA (now retired) bred a series of interspecific crosses between C. oleifera and C. sasanqua, C. hiemalis, or C. vernalis selections. Many, not all, are identified as the winter series, because they bloom in the fall into very early winter. Being reliably hardy as far north as USDA Cold Hardiness Zone 6 (-10 to 0 degrees), this group is better equipped to handle the cold. Petals are shed individually when bloom is completed, eliminating the tiresome task of dead-heading for the gardener. I recommend having not just one camellia in your garSHOWER DOOR SPECIAL den, but a couple that are known to flower at different times during the fall through spring seasons. This way you can enjoy having a bit of “flower power” in your landscape when it is least expected!
