Athens Chamber to Start Small Business Incubator

s 2020 arrived, the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce a new small business incubator which will be on the top floor of the chamber building in downtown Athens. The facility will hold 10 office spaces and should be ready to open by March. A business incubator is designed to help new and startup companies to grow by providing services such as management training or office space. Since startup companies lack many resources, experience, and networks, incubators provide services that help them get through initial hurdles in starting up a business. These hurdles include space, funding, legal, accounting, computer services, and other prerequisites to running the business. According to the Small Business Administration’s

website, an incubator’s mission provides small businesses with four main services. These services are: 1. Plan your Business: Turn your great idea into a great business plan 2. Launch your Business: Turn your business plan into a reality (register, file, and start doing business) 3. Manage your Business: Master day-to-day operations and prepare for success 4. Blount County Public Library Helps Break Records for the Tennessee Regional eBook and Audiobook Download System

he Tennessee Regional eBook and Audiobook Download System (R.E.A.D.S.) recently announced that they achieved a record-breaking four million digital book checkouts in 2019. The Blount County Public Library was among the program’s leaders in checkout numbers. This accomplishment illustrates the continued growth and importance of lending of eBooks and audiobooks along with the creative ways libraries have served their communities with digital services. Tennessee R.E.A.D.S. is one of 73 systems around the world that surpassed one million checkouts through Rakuten OverDrive, the leading digital reading platform and its award-winning app Libby.

February Highlights From the Publisher

hen I was in grade school, classmates always exchanged Valentine cards. But in this digital age, paper cards are not used as often, and an email or digital Valentine just doesn’t have the same personal touch as a paper Valentine. My dad was a saver. He saved all the little mementos that my sister and I gave him over the years. And when he passed away, we found a shoe box full of paper cards, given to my dad by my mom, sister, and I for a variety of occasions that my dad saved. One in particular that touched me was a simple Valentine card with a little girl on it saying “To Daddy from his little girl.” And on the inside, there was a simple sentiment only a little girl would say to her dad with a series of X’s and O’s along with a signature written in my hand with the guidance of my mom. A card like that is just filled with sentiment and is more touching than anything “digital” can ever be. This Valentine’s Day give the special people in your life a personal sentiment and not just a digital version. I know the cards I have received from my husband mean a lot to me because I know he took the time to read the messages to find just the right one that conveys what he feels. That personal message you give will mean so much more. And I am following in my dad’s footsteps by saving those cards in a shoe box that I can look through from time to time and bring back all those wonderful memories. I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with joy. And from all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we wish all of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day!

Dogwood Arts Announces 2020 Co-Chairs

ogwood Arts is excited to announce Robin Wilhoit and Mike C. Berry as the 2020 Dogwood Arts Co-Chairs. Since 1961, Dogwood Arts has been represented by two prominent community leaders who are selected annually to act as ambassadors of our organization. Robin Wilhoit is the weekday anchor on WBIR Channel 10, where she has worked since 1992. She is passionate about issues involving women and children and is a member of several community organizations, including Variety of East Tennessee, A Children’s Charity, the United Way of Greater Knoxville, and the YWCA. Mike C. Berry is a local artist well-known for his urban compositions that bend and twist cityscapes. Mike manages the UT Downtown Gallery and is represented by The District Gallery in Knoxville and The River Gallery in Chattanooga. “We feel honored to have Robin Wilhoit and Mike C. Berry as Dogwood Arts Co-Chairs for the 2020 season,” said Sherry Jenkins, Dogwood Arts Executive Director. “Each year we rely on our co-chairs to be a source of energy, enthusiasm, and new perspectives. About the 2020 Co-Chairs Robin was born and raised in North Carolina but has been proud to call East Tennessee home for the last 20 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Just a few days after receiving her diploma, she started her reporting career at WJHL-TV in Johnson City, Tennessee. In 1992, Robin joined the WBIR news team as a reporter and joined long-time Channel 10 Anchor, Bill Williams, at the news desk in 1998. The same year she helped launch the Buddy Check 10 program to promote breast cancer awareness and has been sharing the stories of women and men who have so bravely battled this disease ever since. Considered a versatile painter who works in vibrant colors, bringing energy and rhythm to each work, Mike C. Berry creates urban compositions that bend and twist the cityscapes that have become his identifiable style. He credits the work of Wolf Kahn, Edward Hopper, and Knoxville artist, Joseph Delaney, for encouraging his use of color, line, and the cityscape as subject matter. Mike was the 2007 Dogwood Arts Festival Limited Edition Print Artist and was awarded Best Visual Artist in Knoxville by the Knoxville News Sentinel Readers Poll in2009. He has exhibited his work in numerous group exhibitions and a solo exhibition, Something Blue, in September 2017. Recently he illustrated a children’s book, “The Curious Adventures of Wickl Wackl and his Friends,” written by his friend Renee D’Elia-Zunino. Mike is originally from the Midwest and earned a MFA in Illustration from the Savannah College of Art & Design.

Ijams Nature Center Seeks Volunteers for Weed Wrangle Knoxville 2020

ne of the biggest “pull” parties of the year needs YOU to help restore East Tennessee’s native landscapes. Ijams Nature Center is looking for 100 volunteers to remove invasive species at the fifth annual Weed Wrangle Knoxville on Saturday, February 29, from 9 am to noon. “Invasive plant removal is vital to protecting natural ecosystems,” said Ben Nanny, Ijams Natural Resource Manager. “The work can be labor intensive, but it’s incredibly rewarding because you’re helping to create habitat to support the wildlife that makes Knox County - and East Tennessee - so special.” Weed Wrangle Knoxville will focus on five sites this year, including Lakeshore Park, Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum, Fort Dickerson, East Knox County Elementary, and Ijams Nature Center. Pre-registration is required; sites will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. To register, visit the Events Calendar on Ijams Nature Center’s website at www.ijams.org. The deadline to register is Wednesday, February 26, at 6 pm. Weed Wrangle Knoxville is part of Ijams Nature Center’s 2020 Take Action! Big and Small Ways to Save the Planet, which runs February 14 through March 15. The four-week series focuses on the many different ways individuals can have a positive impact on the planet. yra and Maybelle are adorable hound puppy sisters who were picked up as strays in Sweetwater in mid-December. Both little girls were sick when they arrived and are now healthy and happy. They are about six months old and love to romp and play. Maybelle is brown and black and weighs about 36 pounds. Myra is black and white and weighs 31 pounds. The girls love being together but can be separated.

Enzo is a two-year-old mixed breed housebroken neutered male who weighs 47 pounds. He is a snuggly guy who loves people, enjoys running and playing, walks well on a leash, and obeys basic commands. In addition to a family of his own, Enzo’s wish list includes a ball, one rawhide chew, and a cushy bed to call his own.

Celesta is a very friendly four-year-old tabby sweetheart, as so many tabby cats are! She always looks like she’s smiling at you, especially when you are paying undivided attention to her, and purring constantly. It’s music to your ears… so soothing. Amber was rescued by a kind soul who saw her hanging too close to a major road. Not wanting her to get hit by a car, they scooped her up and brought her to the shelter. She is about five months old and extremely friendly, as most Flame Point Siamese (mix) are. She loves to cuddle and play just like any kitten. She would probably do well in a home with other pets as long as the slow introduction method is followed. Lopez is a bit of a puzzle. He was surrendered to the shelter as a stray. He is a buff/orange tabby about one year old. He has a rather unique personality... he will tolerate being touched and does enjoy some human interaction. He likes to play but is very, very rough. He would make a wonderful, somewhat friendly indoor/outdoor kitty. It is very possible that he could be turned around into a more gentle, social cat if someone has the time to work with him and give him time to learn to trust his person. Please remember their true purrsonality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. Their condo is now their “safe place,” and some struggle a bit when removed from it. That by no means does NOT mean they aren’t sweet, loving lap cats. It means they are uncomfortable or scared. Take the time to meet each cat. Talk to and pet them while they are still in their condo, and let them get used to you for a few moments before you pick him/her up. Giving a new pet time to decompress, from whatever they have been through, before you meet them will be the best thing you ever do for your new pet. Some may have gotten lost, some may have been let loose, some may have lost their human for many reasons. They need time to learn their new home and their new

person or family. Once you get them home and acclimated, they will feel secure and all will be well… patience WILL pay off! Have you been to the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of The Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA)? It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. Clothing, shoes, furniture, kitchen ware, bedding, appliances, books - we’ve got it all. Donations are greatly appreciated and are accepted Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm. All proceeds go to help the homeless animals of Monroe County. Shopping hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and worker volunteers are always in high demand. Donations can be dropped off at the shelter during shelter hours (PLEASE specify that the donation is for the Food Pantry) OR at Food City in Vonore. Note: Food City moves the donation barrel around. Please consider offering a foster home to help the pets at Second Chance Pals (SCP), a program of Monroe County Friends of Animals. These foster homes help older and/or sick pets that need more assistance than the usual homeless pet. They often cannot be treated until they have a foster home commitment where they can safely stay until their recovery needs are met. Veterinary care and expenses are provided for their treatments, and they are closely monitored. Discipleship at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village

eginning January 22, First Baptist Church of Tellico Village embarked on a series of Discipleship Classes that runs through March 4. These classes are topical, short term, small group Bible Studies that meet on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 5 pm. The studies vary in length from four to eight weeks, and each class is made up of eight to 15 participants who have committed to completing the study preparation material each week. The following five classes are featured for the Winter Session: Overcomer: This five-week study draws from the film Overcomer to examine how we determine our identity and how we can find our true identity in Christ. God’s Grace Through Dementia: This four-week study not only looks at dementia, but serves as a support group for caregivers of dementia patients. Redeemed, Grace to Live Every Day Better than Before: This seven-week Ladies’ Bible Study explores the practical side of redemption, inviting us to lean upon Jesus for our real help and hope. Taking God at His Word: This eight-week Bible Study teaches what the Bible means for us – that it is knowable, necessary, and enough. Jesus Among Secular Gods: In this six-week study, participants will learn to challenge the popular and trending philosophies of the day, pointing out the fallacies in their claims and presenting compelling evidence for absolute truth as found in Scripture. ie-hard country music fans have, no doubt, heard of the new upand-coming artist, Kalie Shorr. With songs like “Fight Like A Girl” and “He’s Just Not That Into You,” Ms. Shorr is commanding the attention of fans of the genre from all around the country. Shorr is a tough girl with a sweet voice and strong work ethic who took the rocky road to country stardom. Born and raised in Portland, Maine, Shorr moved to Nashville as a teenager, working at a hot dog stand as she set her eyes on country music stardom. Self-taught on guitar, she played in bands in Portland, playing Nirvana and Pink Floyd tunes while her real passion was country music. Driven to pursue her passion, she took extra classes so she could graduate from high school early. She also worked two jobs so she could raise the money to finance her move to Music City, which she did by the time she was 19. Her first song, “Fight Like A Girl,” was independently released four years ago and received excellent buzz and airplay on digital radio. In 2017, a second single, “He’s Just Not That Into You,” as well as her next EP, Slingshot, garnered a ton of incredibly positive press from the gamut of country music publications. In this past year, Shorr received even more accolades and achieved even more accomplishments that are detailed in the expanded version of this article on www.boomerocity.com. About her debut album, Open Book, Shorr says, “The album is my first ever full-length album. I wrote every song on there. I’d been working towards an album ever since I released my last EP in January of 2018, called Awake, and I had the vision to potentially start doing a full-length album. I thought I knew where it was headed. Then I got hit back-to-backto-back-to-back with some of the hardest

things I’ve ever gone through. It was all in a one-year period. I had to deal with losing friendships and all that. Then also, six months later, my sister passed away from a drug overdose. “It was just like stuff all at once. It sent me catapulting back to how I wrote when I first fell in love with songs, which was me sitting on my bedroom floor, processing the world around me by making it rhyme. And I kind of stopped writing for any purpose other than myself and working through it. That really birthed these incredibly vulnerable songs. It’s a level of vulnerability and emotional exposure that I never thought I

would do. But it happened, and releasing it out into the world and having it be received well has been the best experience. It’s just so nice to know that you can bear that much of your soul and strangers will be kind to you about it – find some sort of common thread and know that we’re not all so different after all.” In listening to Shorr talk, I couldn’t help but ask her if she felt that there’s an invisible hand guiding her along. “Yeah, I really do,” she said. “I’m a very, very spiritual person, and I did a lot of prayer and meditation when preparing to do this record. I also have gotten a lot closer to my

family after my sister passed away because it really made me rethink my priorities. I go home ten times as much now. I think that God and my family – and even my fans – gosh, they pulled me through so much when things were really tough.” As for what’s on Shorr’s radar for the next year or two, she said, “Touring. Lots of touring. I’m excited because the album has been out for three months, and that’s been exciting. All the year-end lists that we’ve been getting on – like The New York Times said it was the number seven best album of the year. And it was like in the real New York Times that I can hold in my hands, which is crazy! Things like that, those bring my album to a whole new audience. I got on so many ‘best of’ lists, and I just did not see it coming – it just totally baffled me. That is definitely creating a lot of different opportunities that I wouldn’t have had two weeks ago.” Shorr shares at length more about the passing of her sister, her new album, and the surprises that awaited her in the country music industry as she continues to elbow her way into that rough and tumble business. An English playwright, actor, and composer, Coward was known for his likable sophistication and sharp sense of humor. Although he wrote some of the most popular plays of his time, he was also known for his entertaining personality and his abilities as a witty storyteller. It is interesting to note that “Blithe Spirit” was first performed in 1941 at the end of the London Blitz (1940-1941). It was the final play in what is now considered Coward’s great comic trilogy about marriage and infidelity, which included “Private Lives” and “Hay Fever.” Sharon Ott (director) makes her debut at the Clarence Brown Theatre with this production. She has directed both the classics and new plays at such regional theaters as American Shakespeare Center, Utah Shakespeare Festival, and Idaho Shakespeare Festival, Playwrights Horizons, the Public Theater, Manhattan Theater Club, Arena Stage, Roundhouse Theater, Milwaukee Repertory, Missouri Repertory, the Huntington Theater, La Jolla Playhouse, South Coast Repertory, Ford’s Theatre, and many others. She was the Artistic Director of the Berkeley Repertory Theater (for 13 years) and the Seattle Repertory Theater (for 8 years) and has won many awards for her directing and producing, including 3 Bay Area Theater Critics’ Awards, several Hollywood Dramalogue awards, and an Obie Award (with Theatre X, Milwaukee). During her final season as Artistic Director at Berkeley Rep, the company received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theater. Ott currently serves as the Chair of the Dept. of Theatre at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, where she is an Associate Professor. Prior to

Jesus Christ Superstar at The Arts Center

thens Community Theatre (ACT) announces the February production of Jesus Christ Superstar with a run of six performances from February 14 through February 23. Friday and Saturday shows will be held at 7:30 pm, while Sunday matinees take place at 2 pm. The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for more than 40 years. Jesus Christ Superstar tells the story of biblical Jesus in the final days leading up to his crucifixion. A rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the musical has no spoken dialogue and is sometimes considered a modern rock-opera. Loosely based on the Gospels, Superstar focuses on the personal conflicts between Jesus, his disciples, the people of Israel, and the leadership of Rome. Special attention is paid to the relationship between Judas Iscariot and Jesus, as well as Jesus’ relationship with Mary Magdalene. The musical is unique among biblical retellings in that it focuses on both Judas’ struggle making the decision to betray Jesus and

Jesus’ human psychology, fear, and anger in understanding and accepting his role as both leader and martyr. The show is a product of its era, permeated with 1970s rock, gospel, folk and funk themes, modern language and colloquialisms, and high-energy dance numbers. ACT veteran and Arts Center Technical Director, G. David Brown, is the director of this production, while seasoned ACT performer and musician, Kay Simmons, serves as music director. Melonie Carideo, Kelly Borwick, and Angie Hudson are working together as choreographers. Audiences will recognize the members of the band from their time on stage at

various concerts and musical productions in the past. Ellen Kimball will be the accompanist, and the rest of the band includes Ron Clayton, Cody Hensley, Andrew Kimball, David Ledbetter, Joe Littleton, and Kyle Littleton. Are You Ready for 2020?

ere are some recommendations to help you through 2020: Date everything important with the full date – It is recommended to write the full date – for example, January 1, 2020 or 1/1/2020 – when dating important documents. If you just enter 1/1/20, then someone could add digits after the “20” to indicate an earlier date such as 1/1/2017. Review your plan beneficiaries – Review the beneficiaries for your IRAs, qualified retirement plans, and life insurance policies. You should update any designations to reflect major changes in your life, such as marriages, divorces, and births, on a regular basis. Remember, these designations supersede your will. The new SECURE Act passed in late December make changes to IRA beneficiaries, so you may need to make some changes to reflect the new tax laws regarding IRAs. New mileage rates for 2020 - For business use of a car, van, pickup truck, or panel truck, the rate for 2020 will be 57.5 cents per mile in 2020, down from 58 cents per mile last year. The new 2020 rate for charity is 14 cents per mile and for medical and 20 cents per mile. Document your business mileage and meals – In order to claim a deduction for business miles and meals, you need to maintain adequate records. For mileage, you

should document at a minimum the number of miles, purpose of the trip, date, and whom you met with. For business meals, you need to document the business nature of the meal, those in attendance, and the costs of the meal. Documenting these details will better ensure a tax deduction. When the Job Act was passed more than a year ago, it was initially believed the deduction for business meals was eliminated. However, developments since then indicate that business meals for the self-employed are still available if properly documented. Contribute IRA funds to charity – If you are already over 70.5 and taking your required minimum distributions (RMD), consider transferring funds directly from your IRA to an IRS-approved charity. The deduction will not be deductible, and the distribution is not taxable. This opportunity is only available to taxpayers over 70.5 and taking an RMD. The same opportunity should apply to those who will reach 72 after 1/1/2020, the new age in which the RMD’s will be required. Start off the year getting organized – It may be a little late to do a great job with this tip for 2019, but it’s a great time to get started for 2020. Ideally, have a drawer, folder, or box where you place tax-related receipts and documents throughout the year. Once you’re sitting down to prepare your tax documents, everything you need will

be in one place. When you meet with your tax professional to prepare your tax return, it will be very helpful to be able to hand over all your necessary documentation instead of having to hunt for it. Maximize your retirement contributions – Are you contributing the maximum amount to your IRA, Roth, or 401(k)? It is amazing how many employees who are eligible for employer matching do not take advantage of this great employee benefit. Employers may offer to match an employee’s contribution up to a certain amount or percentage. For example, if an employee will voluntarily contribute 3% of their eligible compensation, the employer will match it with an additional 3%. If the employee elects to only contribute 1%, the employer matches 1%. One should maximize any employer match. In addition, you should consider contributing the maximum amount you can to your retirement savings. From time to time, Congress increases the amount one can contribute to your retirement savings. Keep up to date and increase your contributions to maximum allowed amount. Do an annual check-up of your will, powers of attorney, and trust – Are your legal documents up to date? Has your personal representative passed away? Do you have new children or grandchildren? Has one of your dependents recently married and

now has a different last name? Is the person you have chosen to hold your power of attorney still the right choice? These and other questions should be reviewed periodically. While name changes are generally not an issue, they can create confusion. Recently some confusion was created over the naming of a personal representative when two family members had the same first and last name. There was some uncertainty over who was the person being named in the legal documents. Make sure your documents are current and still express your wishes. Fund a Health Savings Account – If you have a Health Savings Account, fund it up to the maximum amount. If you don’t have one, set one up. You can contribute up to $3,550 in a health savings account with single coverage. That number goes up to $7,100 for family plans. Not everyone is eligible, but if you are, be sure and take advantage of this savings opportunity. These and many other suggestions can reduce your income taxes and save you money. The tax laws are complex and Congress makes changes to the tax laws every year. Funding a Roth IRA Through the Backdoor

o you make too much money to contribute to a Roth IRA? Or wish you could add more than the $6,000–$7,000 allowed each year? There’s a solution for both of those issues, called a backdoor Roth strategy. It avoids the income limits of traditional Roth IRAs, and it’s done within your employer retirement plan. If you’re self-employed, set up your own individual 401(k) plan and start saving! As a little background, there are three types of retirement account contributions: Pre-tax, after-tax, and Roth: » Pre-tax contributions are tax-deductible, but all withdrawals from the account are taxed at ordinary income rates when it’s withdrawn. » After-tax contributions are nondeductible, though the growth is tax-deferred. That growth is taxed when it’s withdrawn. » Roth contributions are nondeductible, and they also grow tax deferred. But the growth of the account is also tax-free when withdrawn! We can all agree that tax-free Roth dollars are the “best”

dollars in retirement, and here’s how you can accumulate more of them: In 2020, people age 50 and older can add up to $26,000 in employee pre-tax contributions. Yet there is a second limit of $63,500 in total additions to your retirement accounts, including your employer contributions. As an example, my client was maxing out his contribution of $26,000 and had an employer contribution of $4,500, so a total of $30,500 was added to his 401(k). He lamented the fact that he makes too much money to contribute to a Roth IRA. But I pointed out to him that his 401(k) plan allows for after-tax contributions, too. He still had room to add another $33,000 before he hit the $63,500 limit in total annual additions. Why is this so important? The IRS has ruled that after-tax contributions can be rolled over to a

Roth IRA, thus transforming not just the after-tax contributions, but all future growth of those contributions into a beautiful, tax-free asset. There are several aspects that have to be considered: (1) your employer plan rules, (2) the timing of the Roth rollover, (3) investment decisions before and after rollover, and (4) what the IRS defines as being eligible for rollover. t’s probably no surprise, but if you enjoy doing something, you’re more likely to stick with it. On the other side of that coin, variety is the spice of life. So, when it comes to remaining physically active in your golden years, a combination of both may be just what your doctor ordered. As we age, there’s no question our bodies change, and what you need from a workout will evolve as well. A focus on strength building, remaining mobile, and improving balance typically becomes our preferred goal rather than high endurance, high impact workouts. Your bones and knees may no longer be able to handle exercises that involve running, jumping, and lunging. Knowing and listening to your body is key. ebruary is not my favorite month, but I am trying to focus on the positive this year. With that being said, chilly, rainy days are great for planning what you want to do in your yard! Walk around during a nice day and see what is going on and visualize what you would like to change. Make note of where Mother Nature has changed things for you (I know some of you have lost trees to the storms) and what you will need to do to adapt. If you need guidance, stop by and bring us some pictures. We can help you make good decisions. I am starting this month with a focus on houseplants because they have become popular again, and February is a great month to give them some love and attention while they are not actively growing. » Step number one is to give them a good cleaning. Dust accumulates on the leaves and can clog the pores, reducing their ability to breathe. Smaller plants can be placed in the sink and rinsed with the sprayer. Larger plants can be put in the shower. If they are too large for those options, take a cloth, sponge, or Swiffer and wipe the tops and bottoms of the leaves. Check for any insect or fungal problems and treat them immediately before you have an infestation! Insecticidal soap and neem oil are safe to use indoors, and you can use rubbing alcohol on mealy bugs (except on fuzzy succulents). Sprinkle ground cinnamon around the soil to prevent fungus gnats. » Once you have them clean, evaluate their situation. Do they need fertilizing? I usually start my spring feeding at the end of February with a water-soluble fertilizer mixed at half strength. Most fertilizers are fine, but I choose the Espoma brand because I like to use organics when possible. » Are your plants getting enough light? If they are overly leggy and sparse or if

they are “reaching” for the light, you probably need to supplement. I have a lamp with an LED bulb for my plants that need more light than my house can provide, but the price of grow lights is dropping dramatically. If you have a large grouping, you might want to try one of those. Fluorescent bulbs will work too, but incandescent bulbs do not cover enough of the light spectrum for best results. » Please remember that your plants don’t usually need as much water during the winter months unless you are one of those that cranks the heat up to 75. Many plants will recover from drying out, but you can’t save them if the roots rot. I use my peace lily as my “sentinel” plant. When it droops, I water everything except my succulents. You can also buy a water meter or just stick your finger in there and see if the soil is dry. If low humidity is a problem, buy a humidifier or set trays of gravel under your plants and add water. You don’t want the water to actually be touching the pot (hence the gravels), but you want the evaporation to go straight to the leaves. » Do any of your houseplants need to be bumped up to a larger pot or divided? If you are re-potting, here are some general guidelines: 1. It is usually best to only go up one size pot. It is also best to use a container that has a drainage hole. If yours does not, you will need to add gravel and horticultural charcoal to the bottom of the pot. In general, plastic pots are better for people who underwater and clay is better for those who overwater. Heavy pots are harder to move but are more stable if you have a large plant. Thicker pots provide more insulation for root balls and are better for plants that are kept outdoors year-round. 2. Use a good potting soil that is appro-

priate for your plant. Get the best you can afford, because that is what determines the health of your plant. Succulents need a soil that is specific to succulents and cacti, and orchids need special soil, but most other plants will be happy with any good quality product. Never use soil that you dug out of your yard! 3. If you are afraid to repot your plants, bring them to us. The last part of my article this month is a plea to keep your birdfeeders and birdbaths clean and full. Use a good quality seed because up to 60% of the cheap bags end up wasted. Black oil sunflower provides a high oil content for winter feeding. Safflower will help deter squirrels, and grackles and starlings don’t like it. Thistle seed is best for finches. A hot meat or blazing hot blend will also help with animals who are food thieves because they can taste the pepper and birds cannot! We

shock waves through the retirement planning world. If you have a retirement account or will inherit a retirement account, it’s important to understand what just happened. The Act was designed to improve the ability

of Americans to save for their retirement, which overall it did. But true to form, they slipped in a taxation change that is projected to raise more than $15 billion in new tax revenue over the next decade, according to the Congressional Research Service. And we know whose pocket that is coming out of – yours and mine. Tax planning is truly imperative now. On the good side, the SECURE Act raises the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) age to 72 from 70½. This RMD age is when the IRS steps in and dictates an amount you must withdraw from your pre-tax retirement accounts and pay the associated income tax. Having more flexibility to wait until 72 is a plus for taxpayers. This change only applies to people who turn 70½ in 2020 and beyond – if you were born in July 1949 or later. For everyone else, the old rules still apply. The Act also removes the age 70½ restriction for contributing to an IRA. If you’re still working, you can keep contributing. Also on the good side, to combat retirees’ fears of running out of money, the SECURE Act has made it easier for employers to add a lifetime income annuity as an investment option in retirement plans. This is an especially important change for those employees without access to a corporate pension, now giving them the option of saving into their own annuity that will provide lifetime income in retirement. While the SECURE Act has many positive provisions beyond the two already mentioned, there is also a huge tax blow lurking for people who inherit IRAs and Roth IRAs beginning in 2020. Under the old rules, non-spouse beneficiaries could generally stretch their taxable inheritance distributions out over their lifetimes – thus leaving the bulk of the inherited IRA asset safely tax-deferred and generally growing at a rate that exceeded the required distribution. In theory, these inherited assets, especially Roth IRAs, could pass from generation to generation in a tax-sheltered way. But not anymore. The new rules dictate that non-spouse beneficiaries must empty these accounts by the end of the 10th year following the year of inheritance, and it applies equally to traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs. For traditional IRAs, that “emptying” process is all taxable income. Your heirs have to report that income on top of their regular

income, and at a time when they’ll probably be in their highest earning years. To think that a third of your IRA could be lost to taxes is a very real possibility. What are we to do? Take action now while taxes are on sale! Our current lower tax rates are legislated to expire in December 2025, so you have six years left to do systematic Roth conversions and slowly convert your taxable IRA to a tax-free Roth. Think of it as you’re paying tax on the “seed” knowing that your heirs will reap a tax-free Roth “harvest” when they inherit it 20 or 30 years from now. Someone has to pay the tax; either you, now, on a smaller amount or your heirs, later, on a larger amount – there’s no escaping it. There is no perfect solution, though. The SECURE Act has dampened the planning value of that Roth IRA “harvest,” because even though it is importantly taxfree to your heirs, they still have to empty the Roth IRA within 10 years and invest it somewhere else. They can’t put much of it into their own Roth IRA because the contribution limits are extremely low and income limits apply as well. They’ll have to invest it into a taxable investment account (thus having to report the associated income every tax year) or look to cash value life insurance to create their own version of a tax-deferred Roth IRA. Needless to say, the SECURE Act has created tax planning needs at both ends of the inheritance spectrum. Proactively, for IRA account owners to minimize the taxation at their passing. And reactively, for heirs to know how best to minimize the tax in that 10-year window and smartly invest their inheritance going forward. ecently Keener Homes completed a major remodel on our home in Rarity Bay, and we could not be more ecstatic. We bought our first home in Tellico Village from the Keeners in 2002 and knew they were the right choice for our major remodel, which involved removing all stucco and replacing with brick and stone; adding a screened-in porch; replacing the deck; adding hardscape and pavers for the driveway, dry below under the deck, outdoor patio with a kitchen L, fire pit, sitting wall, and walkway to the dock; as well as redoing the landscaping. This remodel was just like building a new home. From the initial design to the destruction and construction phases, we could not be more pleased.
