business. In retrospect, I had no idea what lay in front of me! Here was a young girl with no experience, putting herself into competition with big established furniture stores, selling product not geared to the masses. Contemporary furniture was definitely not as popular then! However, I was totally fearless, a bit flamboyant, and determined to make the business work. I have always pushed the boundaries by offering uncommon products and was not (and am not) afraid to be different. Luckily, people found me, and I began to develop a strong client base, many of whom still shop with me today. My business has grown and evolved a lot since those early days. I like to say it grew up with me. Friends

and sales reps have mentored, encouraged, and supported me and GRATEFULLY, loyal clients have helped me continue in the business I love. MV: How does your store continue to stand out from the other area businesses that also sell furniture? Paula: Nouveau Classics sells Modern and Contemporary furniture, while most stores in Knoxville and Nashville focus on Traditional or Transitional furniture. Most of my lines are from Europe and are exclusive in the Southeast region to Nouveau Classics. I carry several lines that are otherwise only available in cities like NYC or LA. It is exciting to have these sources to offer my clients. Not only is the quality

of my product outstanding, but so are the designs of the furniture pieces themselves. MV: What is your overriding business philosophy? Paula: It is of the utmost importance that each and every client feels they had a great experience after working with me. My goal is to always give more than expected and my client be beyond thrilled with the outcome. To succeed with this philosophy, I learn about my client, listen and ask questions in order to understand how they live, and then I am able take them to how they WANT to live. Each space, like each client, is unique. High design and quality are also key. After changing the atmosphere in someone’s home or business, in many cases, the end result can be like a personal reinvention. That is heady stuff and very fulfilling. MV: Tell us more about the services you offer. Paula: 30+ years of experience working in the contemporary furniture field is significant. This means I have developed a relationship with many credible vendors and have extensive product knowledge of the pieces I offer to my clients. Going to trade shows every year, visiting manufacturing facilities, building relationships with the companies, buying and placing furniture in real life situations helps you understand quality, scale, and what works and what doesn’t. AULA CLANCY, designer and founder of Nouveau Classics and Design, began her business shortly after graduating from the University of Tennessee. Nouveau Classics, located downtown at 101 S Gay Street, has definitely filled a void in the Knoxville area by offering clean, contemporary furniture and creative design services. East Tennessee’s Mountain Views had the opportunity to talk to Paula about the start of her business and how she hopes to continue to broaden Knoxville’s concept of interior design well into the future. MV: What made you decide to open your own business, and how were you able to accomplish this at such an early age? Paula: I have loved modern furniture and interior design since I was a little girl. In 1989, there was no place in town to buy the type of furniture I liked. There was a huge opportunity to fill a niche in the market while pursuing a field I was passionate about. Bartending my way through college and continuing well into the third year of being open enabled me to self-fund my

“Decorating is not just about function, it’s also about fashion.” understanding the contemporary furniture world, I am an Interior Designer and work with contractors, electricians, plumbers, custom cabinet craftsmen, etc. In many situations, I am the creative lead - coming up with the renovation plan - and then the liaison between the subcontractors to oversee the project. MV: What are some unique or new offerings you'd like to share? Paula: I am forever evolving and constantly looking for new lines to add to my library of sources. Outdoor furniture has always been part of the lineup, but recently I have expanded in that area of my business by adding Gloster, Harbour Outdoor, and Unopiu to my sources. In addition, the Harlequin Zero Gravity mattress from Literie Laurier, a Canadian Line, is now available at Nouveau Classics. (It’s amazing, by the way!) Quality is extremely important, so prior to offering a new line to clients, I must see the product in person and be educated on the details. Home and business staging is another service offered. I can work with what clients already own or pull together a creative and cost-effective plan to help the client in selling or renting property. MV: What do you consider to be your personal successes? Paula: Although I have been a designer for the Symphony Show House several times and sat on several boards in Knoxville, I am most proud of the relationships I have built

with my clients. There is no bigger compliment than getting a call or referral from a happy and satisfied client. In fact, I have been in business for so long now that I am even getting calls from the 2nd generation, past clients’ grown children who remember me working with their parents or designing their own playrooms and bedrooms. When the 3rd generation starts calling, it may be time to stop... ha ha. MV: How can interested customers learn more about Nouveau Classics Contemporary Furniture & Interior Design?

Paula: They can call me! They can visit my store and design studio to actually see/touch/feel the products and learn more about what is offered on-site. I am an unusual case, as many Interior Designers do not have showrooms. Clients can experience the products in person. I am all about having a conversation with clients. It’s so important to learn all you can about each other - and this goes both ways, as it has to be a good fit for both parties when working together. With so many years of experience, there are a ton of projects and people I have worked with throughout the years. I am happy to share information about my projects. The showroom does not keep set business hours in the Knoxville or Nashville locations, as I need the flexibility be with clients on the jobsite. Please call 865-525-4755 or 615-383-3164 to make an appointment. Visit my website at www.nouveauclassics.com to learn more about the product lines. February Highlights

From the Publisher

ebruary is a challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine. And we are still dealing with a worldwide pandemic. But one bright spot this month is the celebration of Valentine’s Day. It’s a day we can make plans for a special night at home and have a wonderful dinner or get away to a favorite warmer location. I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her. How about a Valentine gift of a home or room renovation? We have highlighted some interior designers, cabinet makers and designers, a reclaimed lumber company and more. All the businesses we highlight can help you with updating and improving your home’s look. And if you want to improve your own personal look and get ready for your special Valentine Day celebration, we have salons/spas that can help make you feel your best. So I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with joy and happiness in spite of the pandemic. Living in beautiful East Tennessee, we are blessed with its scenic beauty, mild weather and lingering sunsets. We have recreational opportunities with hiking trails in the parks and Smokies, fishing, boating and water sports on our many lakes and beautiful country drives. Invisalign: Clearly Your Best Solution for a Great Smile

I

t’s only natural to compare your smile to the smiles of others who exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth. Perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve your very own whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces. Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. And while there are other clear aligners on the market, you are encouraged to examine these alternatives very closely. According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been more than 1,800 consumer complaints across the country filed against one such Invisalign competitor promising significant savings with their DIY, in-home alignment system. These same complaints allege that patients have had to spend from $800 to $5,500 to correct the misalignment resulting from the use of these DIY aligners. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.

T

Also, what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend a treatment without ever having examined you personally. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist? To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at

WATeR Investigates Lake “Greening”

he mission of the Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) is to protect and improve the environment in the Tellico Reservoir Watershed. Last year, some boaters and residents living along the lake shore reported “greening” at the shoreline, particularly in coves. They also reported a developing density of weeds near the shoreline. If some parts of the reservoir are greening with algae and weeds, what’s the food source that’s fostering this growth? There are no large cities upstream to pollute the waters of the Little Tennessee and Tellico Rivers. Additionally, there are minimal issues with industrial discharge because the industries in Vonore’s industrial park were constructed after environmental regulations were in effect and are considered clean industries. Members of WATeR decided that it was important to investigate this increase in growth on the lake. One of the ways to study such change is to look at trophic levels. Trophic levels are a measurement of the availability of food/energy in a defined ecosystem. WATeR sampling team leader Bill Atkinson, fish biologist Garry Lucas and wastewater professional engineer

By Marilyn Morete, President, WATeR

Jim Hawkey designed a sampling project to define the trophic status of Tellico Reservoir and provide baseline data for a more comprehensive monitoring of the reservoir’s water quality. Mr. Lucas explained how this sampling would be done. He stated: “Tellico Reservoir will be sampled at 6 different locations in April, July and September of 2021. Two samples will be taken at each location for analysis by two different labs. Phytoplankton species and total nitrogen will be sampled in July. This is a large financial commitment for WATeR as these three sets of samples will cost about $4,700.00.” Another measure of change is water clarity. WATeR began sampling the lake’s water clarity in 2018 at multiple sites along the shoreline. The purpose of this sampling is to analyze trends in water clarity, an indication of the trophic status of a body of water. It also provides a quantitative basis for setting goals for water quality. Interpretation of the collected data and its conversion to trends and analysis is complicated. The seasons affect the water with differences in day/evening air temperatures and they affect water temperatures. The reservoir is 656

square miles large, has 15,600 acres of water surface, 357 miles of shoreline and is up to 80 feet deep. At any one given day or time, conditions will not be identical for all areas of the reservoir. Therefore, interpretation of conditions for seemingly similar areas may not be the same. That’s why someone can report greening at the shoreline and not see it in the middle of the lake. WATeR’s goal will be to look at conditions near and about the shoreline and determine the sources of food/ energy that encourages greening – growth of algae - and increased vegetation. Bill Waldrop, Chair for WATeR’s water quality committee, says, “We suspect that stormwater runoff from increased development around the lake is carrying too many nutrients into the lake.” Based on our data, WATeR will develop a plan to identify causes and solutions that maintain the pristine conditions of the water for recreational and esthetic purposes and that maintain property values. WATeR is a not-for-profit organization. Go to its website at www.tellicowater.org to learn more and print out a membership application. Support WATeR’s mission by becoming a member.

New Year

New Projects for your Kitchen or Bath!

W

ith the New Year comes inspiration to tackle some projects around the house. Although you may have dreams of gutting your kitchen or renovating the bathroom, these big jobs are costly and timeconsuming. Instead, consider taking on smaller projects that will give you the best bang for your buck. Here are some ideas to spark your creativity. 1. Organize and better utilize your pantry. Throughout the year, you probably accumulate all sorts of things in your pantry. By removing the contents and throwing away expired items you can start with a clean slate. Consider installing pull-out shelving to better access your items. Hard to reach items will be at your fingertips, and you

will increase your storage capacity. 2. Create usable storage space in your bathroom cabinet. Bath products, hair products, and cleaning solutions may be taking up all the space under your bathroom sink, leaving you no room for essentials like toilet paper and tissues. With a two-tiered pull-out shelving system, you can maximize your storage and easily find what you need. 3. Declutter and find more space for your pots and pans. Are you frustrated with the way you store your pots and pans? Most people get frustrated looking in their cabinets for the right size pot and matching lid. With pullout shelving, you can easily arrange your pots, pans, and lids so you can access them quickly when cooking.

4. Make better use of corner cabinets. Most kitchens have a corner cabinet that has dead space that is often hard to access. With a unique, pull-out solution for corner cabinets, you can add more storage space in your kitchen. It’s a cost-effective way to use the space you already have without adding to the footprint of your kitchen.

You may not be able to redesign your whole kitchen, bathroom, or pantry at this time, but you can ease your frustration by working on smaller projects that will have lasting impacts throughout the New Year! ShelfGenie® 865-409-1197 www.shelfgenie.com

Oriental Rug Washing is Truly an Art Which Combines Today’s Technology with Old-World Craftsmanship

O

riental rugs continue to grow in popularity among homeowners and business owners. Often referred to as art for our floors, Oriental rugs embrace centuries-old hand-craftsmanship that remains literally unchanged. These rugs combine all-natural fiber, primarily wool, all-natural dyes, and are still hand-knotted on looms as they have been for many hundreds of years. Oriental rugs can last almost indefinitely when well cared for and have earned a reputation for being extremely durable. In fact, many Oriental rug owners pass on their treasured rugs as family heirlooms to be enjoyed by future generations. But these durable and long-lasting rugs also have a gentler side. Their all-natural fibers and dyes make proper, periodic care all the more important. Unlike their wallto-wall cousins, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using traditional carpet cleaning methods, as they would likely be damaged in the process. Genuine Oriental rugs can only be thoroughly and safely cleaned by “washing” them – a process that can’t be properly performed by even the most ardent DIYer. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have used our more than three decades of experience to create a proprietary 11-step rug washing process to safely clean even your most valuable Oriental rugs. You can watch our informative rug washing video online at www.superiorofknoxville.com. But our commitment to you doesn’t end there. We routinely attend training seminars offered by Oriental rug washing experts from across the nation to learn

By Kerry McDuffie, Owner of Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning the Centrum to an immersion pool is like comparing your morning shower to a bath. Be sure also to ask about our large selection of rug cushions and the application of rug protectant, both of which are designed to prolong the life of your Oriental and area rugs Committed to protecting your precious

how to improve our craft. We also make significant financial investments in the latest, state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, which further enhance our already modern, state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique located in Farragut. Recently we have invested in the latest technological advancements in the Oriental rug washing marketplace, including the “Marinator Decon System,” which enables us to wash the most difficult area of any rug, the inner rug fibers. The Decon System is perfect for the removal of pet contamination. In addition, we have just installed the Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor which directs a gentle cascade of 100% pure, clean water down the sloped floor and over and through your rug to ensure that it is as bright and clean as possible. P

umpkin is an adorable neutered male Terrier mix. He weighs 20 pounds and is 6 years old. Pumpkin came to the shelter as a stray on November 14. He is heartworm positive, but has started his treatment on January 6. He is a lively little guy that loves attention. It is suspected that he had a fractured hip in the past, but that doesn’t stop him!

Ellie is a beautiful 1-1/2 year old Pit Mix. She is a very friendly dog and loves to jump in your lap for attention. She has a lot of energy and would appreciate a fenced-in yard where she could play. Ellie would love to find her “furever” family who would take her on long walks and play catch with her.

Hubie is a delightful 2 yr. old blue and white DSH boy with a very sociable personality. He will follow you anywhere, in demand of head rubs and food. Hubie loves boxes and playing with his toys. He found his way into a barn and the barn owners would have kept Hubie but the resident kitties vetoed that idea. Hubie is a sweetheart with perfect litter box manners. He would be great in a home that has safe outdoor access such as a screened porch. He has grown accustomed to his soft, warm bed and lazy lifestyle. Justine, a 1 yr. old female tabby is a sweet girl who adores human company. She would be best in a home that appreciates a very extroverted kitty. Justine enjoys lap cuddles, curling around your ankles and chin scratches. She prefers human love over playing with her toys. She enjoys the perks of being indoors but has had outdoor access in the past and she uses her litter box just fine but is very diligent in burying her deposit. Litter tends to scatter in all directions. A covered litter box would be ideal for her. Ellie is a 2 yr. old white and brown tabby girl. Ellie is already people friendly. She is a particular little lady who expects her meals on time and the occasional head pat. Ellie would be a wonderful addition to any home or farm looking for rodent control. She would trade her services in exchange for a warm, safe home and daily meals.

If you are interested, please email mcfa37885@gmail.com. Much of the newsletter is boiler plate, so it only requires writing the “cat portion” of the article. The holidays are over but the need for donations does not stop. If you’re interested in making on-going donations, an easy way to donate is through Chewy’s Autoship program. Check it out at chewy.com. https://www.chewy.com/g/monroe-county-friends-of-animals_b71613221. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to individually thank you for your generosity. LOOKING BACK AT 2020 W

hat a year! We have all struggled through this horrible pandemic and so sorry for all the sickness and losses everyone has had to experience. We found out early on; as Realtors we are an essential business; so, we continued to work. I just want to say how proud I am of all our agents. We have handled closing docs outside title companies for clients that are sick and could not come into the title company. We’ve welcomed people into our office, not knowing if we are being exposed to the virus or not. We’ve had zoom meetings and we have added video tours for most of our listings. We have worn masks for many hours daily, used anti-bacterial for our hands until they’re in bad shape and used Lysol so much we smell like it. We’ve went to work when we have had family members struggling with the virus, knowing we would rather be with our family but knew we were an essential business. We’ve covered for each other when one or more of us were in quarantine. It has been an emotional year for all of us; but we have managed to put our clients’ needs first. Once again, our clients, customers and agents have made us one of the most successful Real Estate Offices in this area. According to the Knoxville Multiple Listing Service for dates January 1, 2020 - December 31, 2020; Smoky Mountain Realty had more closed transactions among other Loudon County real estate offices during this timeframe. We had 260 transactions for nearly 57 million dollars in sales; that’s an absolutely incredible year while dealing with a pandemic. Our agents are irreplaceable and at times seem invincible. We currently have 24 agents that are dedicated to your needs. If you or anyone you know are ever in need of a Realtor, please give us the opportunity to show you how we can help you. After a year like this our agents ended 2020 by helping some families in great need. We provided 40 food boxes for a complete Christmas dinner; we provided gifts for 45 children and some adults that faced some unfortunate times in 2020. Our agents went shopping for several other children. We had help from family and friends outside our office as well. I appreciate everyone so much for the endless hours of shopping, wrapping, deliveries and monetary gifts. Be watching for our box truck service. It will be available to use for your moving needs soon. We look forward to helping you with all your real estate needs in 2021 and we are always available. Our hope is for good health and success for everyone. Please continue to pray for our country and a specific prayer request in our office is for Billy Gooden. Billy is the brother of our secretary Candi Goodwin and has been hospitalized battling Covid since December 4th. 1010 E. Broadway

~ Singing the COVID Blues ~

s many of the regular readers of this column know, the past 10 months have had a heavy dose of The COVID as the primary topic. This month, we talk about Singing the COVID Blues. We have all been affected in one way or the other by The COVID. Some have had it, some have been in direct

contact, some have been in indirect contact, and the list goes on and on. But some have been impacted when it comes to their personal appearance. Recently, while speaking with a friend, she was going on about how much she disliked her hair. However, from my prospective there was not a single thing I could find

that was unappealing about her hair. As the conversation went on, the real culprit in regards to her feelings suddenly became clear. The COVID. How could The COVID Brian K. Whitehead be responsible you ask? Managing Partner Well, while working from The Village Salon home or not getting out of the house, it is easy to The Village Salon get into the habit of having 222 Village Square no make-up, wearing sweat in Tellico Village pants, not styling your hair, 865-458-9332 no fingernail polish, yada, thevillagesalon@aol.com yada, yada. While looking into a mirror wearing a mask, this can add up to having a dramatically negative impact on one’s self perception. The problem is not necessarily with the hair, but with the entire program. If you happen to have negative feelings concerning your hair, take a moment to assess your situation. You may find that the source of your frustration may be coming from the trickle-down effects of The COVID and not necessarily from your hair itself. Hopefully, everyone is staying well and let us also hope that this is the last column where we discuss The COVID.

Zoo Knoxville Welcomes a Baby Zebra for the Holidays

Z

oo Knoxville had a happy surprise for the holidays with the birth of an endangered mountain zebra! The foal was born to parents Lydia and Die Toekoms, and is the first mountain zebra to be born in Knoxville. The baby is nursing and healthy. The foal’s gender is yet to be determined as zoo staff is giving Lydia and the baby time to bond. Zoo Knoxville is one of only 18 zoos in the country who work with this species as part of the Hartmann’s Mountain Zebra Species Survival Plan, a collaboration of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to save them from extinction. Native to southwest Africa, mountain zebras are vulnerable to extinction due to habitat loss due to farming and livestock production. It is estimated that only 8,300 remain in the wild. “This birth is a goal we have been working and planning toward for several years,” said Curator Petty Grieve. “It is our job to help ensure the survival of this species and it is exciting to see the impact our herd will have for the future.”

Sneak Preview… Spring 2021 T

February, 2021, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 13A

Fashion Sense

he idea for spring and summer 2021 is casual comfort… Even before the Covid-19 pandemic, fashion had been headed in an overall comfier direction for some time! The athleisure category has held strong for years, and stylish sneakers have overtaken sleek high heels as the footwear of choice for women everywhere. Best of all, there’s now a comfortable look for everyone! Matching lounge sets have become a huge style staple – whether it be funky tie-dye or simple all black, these coordinated outfits can take you from morning errands to afternoon zoom calls with ease. If the matchy-matchy outfits aren’t your thing, an outfit made up of comfortable separates may be the 2021 trend you should explore. Try a cotton jogger pant paired with a statement t-shirt – perhaps one with puff sleeves (all hail the return of the eighties!) or a colorful print. Of course, all the comfortable outfits for the upcoming season are best paired with sneakers! Whether you choose a simple white, a funky print, a pastel color, or a stylish platform – each sneaker “look” has its place in the fashion world for spring 2021. At The Lily Pad, we have evolved with these ever changing times to offer our customers the stylish comfort we are all looking for – and a safe environment to shop in.

Zoo Knoxville Excited to Announce Birth of Baby Giraffe

Z

oo Knoxville is excited to announce Frances’ giraffe gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Christmas Eve morning. Frances and her new calf are being given time to bond in the barn with the zoo’s other female Lucille and father Jumbe. The team of caretakers will be monitoring the calf closely to make sure it is getting enough nourishment and gaining strength. Frances and the calf will be given access outside when temperatures are warm enough for the baby to be out safely. This is the second giraffe birth at Zoo Knoxville in 18 years. This is also the second offspring for Frances and Jumbe (pronounced JOOM-bay). The two were paired on the recommendation of the Giraffe Species Survival Plan, a collaboration of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) working to save giraffes

from extinction. “This is a happy note to end a challenging year on,” said Lisa New, President and CEO. “We are very grateful for the outpouring of support for the Zoo and our mission to care for and protect these endangered animals. Our entire community rallied behind us and all became zookeepers in 2020. This little giraffe is a great testament to what your support made possible.” The population of wild giraffes has declined dramatically over the last few years, and now there are fewer than 100,000 giraffe left in Africa. They are threatened by habitat loss, competition with growing human populations and being hunted for bushmeat. With a recent 40% decrease in their populations, giraffe are now critically endangered. This calf will help ensure a healthy giraffe population for the future

conservation of his species. Zoo Knoxville is a nonprofit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville features exhibits of wild animals in natural habitats and is world renowned for its efforts in conservation and species survival. Zoo Knoxville is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Knoxville’s largest attraction, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Currently, the zoo is open Monday through Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and Thursday through Sunday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. Toto's Steve Lukather Shares His New Album & His Birthday Gift to Ringo Starr by

R

EA DERS MAY already know that Toto’s Steve “Luke” Lukather is a good friend of Boomerocity, going back at least eight years. Luke has always been generous with his time and a gracious host for several Toto shows, in addition to a show with Ringo Starr. Luke has been a member of Ringo’s All-Starr Band for almost 10 years. I reached out to Luke at his SoCal home to discuss his new album and to catch up on Toto’s post-litigation news. We started off, however, discussing a new music video that features Ringo Starr, titled “Run to Me.” “That was a gift to Ringo,” said Luke. “That’s why I put it out so early (before the album), because it’s nothing like the rest of my record, stylistically. But it was a cool tune written for Ringo for his 80th birthday. It was supposed to be included in a video thing that never actually came out. Me, Colin Hay (Men at Work), Gregg Rolie (Santana & Journey), and a bunch of the guys who made it never used it, and I’m like, ‘Why didn’t it happen?’ “So I said, ‘Well, you know what, this is so cool. We got Ringo to play on it and everything. I love the tune. So let’s put it out in the summer. It’s a happy tune for unhappy times!” Luke finished by saying, “It was made for

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

zero dollars! Joseph Williams (also of Toto fame) made it on an iPhone and then got Brent Carpenter to go to Ringo’s, and we taped him playing. He then sent the film to Joe, who put it all together. It was just meant for Ringo’s birthday, but it came out so good! I thought, well, let’s put it on it (the new album). Let’s put it out. Come on. It’s a happy tune. Look, it has Ringo Starr one of my favorite human beings on planet Earth, as well as one of my favorite drummers - and he just came in and killed it Ringo-style and played the tambourine. That tambourine was the same tambourine that was on the Beatles records, and it was on Revolver. You’re like, pinch yourself! I have a lot of pinch me moments.” Luke is right, it is a cool video with Ringo playing the drums and that iconic tambourine. It’s done in classic “pandemic home video” style, complete with dance moves in the kitchen, loved ones, and, of course, a cute dog. Be sure to catch the “Run to Me” video on Boomerocity.com. Click on the “Read More” button on Steve Lukather’s photo to watch Ringo Starr’s special birthday song while we find out more about Luke’s pinch me moments. Luke and the band he has been with for more than 40 years, Toto, have had a tumultuous few years, legally speaking, that has recently been settled.

Luke and lead singer Joseph Williams, along with Toto’s David Paich, are continuing Toto’s legacy, with Luke’s upcoming release of a new solo album, “I’ve Found the Sun Again,” and a new release on the same day from Joseph Williams. On the subject of his and Joseph Williams’ solo albums that both land this month, Luke said, “We’ve been rehearsing the new band from a distance, wearing masks and all that. It’s been a long year for everybody. We put together a plan to have our albums come out the same day and have a similar cover. We’re on each other’s records. David Paich is on mine and also Joe’s, and we co-wrote together. I did duets with him. It’s not a Toto record, but it’s probably as close as you’re ever going to get to one again.” Boomerocity asked Luke to share more about his new solo album, and he responded: “My record’s harder, more jam. There are longer pieces of music. A lot of improvisation. It’s cut 90% live. I overdubbed the vocals the same day, and we made the whole album in eight days. All

the solos are real. I got David Paich, Jeff Babko from Jimmy Kimmel’s band, Jorgen Carlsson from Gov’t Mule, John Pierce (Huey Lewis & The News) on bass, Gregg Bissonette (drummer, also in Ringo’s All Star Band), and myself. We didn’t rehearse. I pointed to guys to solo like I was conducting in the studio! It’s all on film. Brent Carpenter, my dear brother, came down and filmed ‘Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys,’ which was a big jam! I was really proud of the way it came out and just had so much fun making this record. We wanted to make a record old school with 1972 values. Everybody’s playing live in the studio but with 2020’s fidelity.” There is so much more that Luke shares, including insights into how the album was made, more about the Toto litigation, playing with Ringo, and how it is being Steve Lukather; blasting his guitar to a neighbor who made the mistake of mowing his yard a tad too early in the morning… You can watch it all on video by visiting www.Boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Incorporating the Beauty and Sustainability of Reclaimed Wood into Your Story

edicated to the preservation of our remaining old growth forests, Plantation Reclaimed reclaims the unique species of wood discovered in centuries-old tobacco barns, old abandoned barns, and warehouses that might otherwise deteriorate to an un-useful state. In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are excited to feature Plantation Reclaimed founders and owners, and daughter and father team, Jenny and Jim Blalock. You’ll learn how this antique wood can be incorporated into both new and existing homes in a variety of applications, including flooring, siding,

mantels, and beams, just to name a few. The sheer beauty and rich patina from these reclaimed pieces of history simply cannot be replicated. MV: Describe how you successfully create an authentic sense of style using reclaimed antique wood in homes and offices that is difficult to achieve using modern building materials. Jenny: Reclaimed antique wood is unrivaled in terms of its ageless beauty and charm and is unparalleled in its architectural quality and character. Using authentic reclaimed wood in your home or office adds great character that you cannot duplicate

using newly sawn wood alternatives. By incorporating reclaimed wood into your home or office, you are restoring a part of history. As we like to say, “Reclaiming history one floor at a time.” MV: You also describe salvaging antique lumber as environmentally responsible. Why? Jenny: We are dedicated to the preservation of our old growth forests, protecting them as a legacy to future generations. Our unique, antique wood comes from tobacco and abandoned barns and warehouses and other structures as much as 200 years old! Not only is it environmentally responsible to recycle antique lumber, but

the character and unique patina of each piece of reclaimed wood, which occurs naturally over decades and centuries, just can’t be replicated. Using reclaimed wood in your home or office offers you that one-of-a-kind look that cannot be duplicated. MV: Describe some of the creative uses for reclaimed wood at home or at the office. Jenny: With the wide variety of hardwoods we mill that are available to be used for flooring and siding, we have the perfect opportunity to really get creative. By combining our talents with our clients’ desires, we create our one-of-a-kind masterpieces.

We can customize any flooring or siding to have rounded edge beveling to provide more of a plank look. We can even custom mill any species of un-reclaimed wood. We take pride in being a custom mill shop dedicated to creating the finished look you want. We are also very proud of our custom designed barn doors, shutters, tables, and countertops, which offer you that extraordinary, one-of-a-kind look you’ve been searching for. MV: Describe your customer care experience. Jenny: Plantation Reclaimed is dedicated to providing you with the very best customer care experience possible. We want each of our clients to love their finished products as much as we do. You can depend on us to provide you with quality products that add value to your home or office. We stand behind it. That’s our commitment from my family to yours. MV: You have a spectacular gallery that can be found at www.plantationreclaimed.com, which can serve as inspiration for home or business owners open to the idea of using reclaimed antique lumber in a future building or remodeling project. For our readers who might wish to learn more about Plantation Reclaimed, what is the best way to reach you? Jenny: Thank you for recommending our website as a resource for our clients. We are very proud of the reclaimed wood products produced by Plantation Reclaimed and enjoy sharing our clients’ photos in our online gallery. They really have served as an inspiration for new clients. For your readers wishing to contact me, the best way to reach me is either by email at jenny@plantationreclaimed.com or by phone at 865-243-4604. I’ve discovered that most people prefer to email. MV: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Jenny: First, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our many customers for both their support and encouragement since first launching Plantation Reclaimed. I would also like to thank my dad, who works so hard alongside me every day. I’ve had the honor of working with him for 20 years now. Many people have told me throughout the years that they could never work with their parents, but despite the inevitable ups and downs of self-employment, these challenges have actually strengthened our relationship. We absolutely love what we do and feel blessed to be able to serve our customers each and every day. Plantation Reclaimed 865.243.4604 www.plantationreclaimed.com jenny@plantationreclaimed.com

Discover Your Home’s Showcase Kitchen & Bath at Knox Cabinet Co.

“Affordable Cabinetry Without The Long Wait” By Megan Thomas, Co-owner of Knox Cabinet Co.

H

omeowners agree that their home’s kitchen is the most important room in their home. Our kitchens are the center of our family’s day-to-day living and activities. Our day begins in our kitchen with our first cup of coffee and continues on throughout the day as we cook, dine, and socialize in the kitchen with family and friends. If you’re designing a kitchen for your new dream home or re-designing a new kitchen for an existing home, we think you will enjoy our recent interview with Knox Cabinet Co. owner and area entrepreneur, Megan Thomas. If you are in search of the highest quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry at near wholesale pricing, we’re certain you’ll enjoy this interview with Megan. MV: What inspired you to open Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: We’ve been remodeling existing homes for resale for many years. During this process, we learned the importance of creating dynamic kitchens and baths in the homes we sold. They became the centerpiece of each successful sale. After discovering several new and exciting cabinet manufacturers, we decided to launch Knox Cabinet Co. We completed our first showroom on Hardin Valley Road in October 2018 and our second Maryville location in 2019. MV: How has your experience influenced the Knox Cabinet Co. brand? Megan: Because we were the customers for so many years, we gained an appreciation for what homeowners shopping for kitchen and bath cabinetry wanted from their cabinet supplier. Our goal is to make your experience of shopping for quality and affordable cabinetry as easy and as seamless as possible, creating for our customers that showcase quality look they are searching for while remaining within their budget. MV: Describe some of the features and benefits of Knox Cabinet Co.’s kitchen and bath cabinetry. Megan: All of our cabinets are built from all wood construction and all drawers are dovetailed. Just a few of the available options include pull-out trash receptacles, microwave cabinets, spice rack pull-outs, and file drawers for starters. But the favorites are the multiple stain and paint options and door styles available to select from. We can also provide cabinets in your favorite Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams colors. These are truly high-end cab-

inets at surprisingly affordable prices. MV: It would appear that many of the standard features of your cabinets are optional with other cabinet manufactures. Megan: At our price point, you would be correct. Homeowners will find that other comparably priced cabinets do not include the soft-close doors and soft-close dovetailed drawers that we offer as standard features. MV: How are you able to offer both superior quality cabinetry and competitive pricing? Megan: Our goal is to offer top quality, affordable, all wood cabinetry that offers the options that we know our customers want. We have developed a proprietary business model with low overhead, custom design capabilities, and intelligent logistics and warehousing in order to offer this unique value to all of our customers. MV: Describe your typical customer experience. Megan: Based on our past retail cabinetry marketplace experience, we simply set out to make the Knox Cabinet Co. experience easier and more enjoyable. Our showrooms feature multiple designer created vignettes to help inspire you to discover that showcase quality kitchen and bathroom within your home. And with the assistance of our design team, we guide you through every step of the design process, answer all of your questions, offer recommendations, and even offer CAD drawings using our 2020 design software, allowing you to see your new virtual kitchen and bath before any work begins. MV: Do you also offer countertops? Megan: All of our designer vignettes feature a variety of solid surface countertops. We also have samples displayed throughout our design showrooms for your convenience. Should you discover a surface that you love, we can provide pricing and arrange to have our preferred fabricator/installer come to your home to measure, fabricate, and install your countertops once your new cabinets are installed. MV: Do you offer in-home design services? Megan: In the home construction and remodeling marketplace, I learned that it is often difficult to accurately describe the kitchen or bath design that the homeowner is attempting to achieve. In those instances, we offer an in-home design service to enable our experienced design staff mem-

e’re in the midst of winter. The sun is lower on the horizon, and the outside temperatures have dropped. Outdoor activities have moved indoors, warm weather clothing has been put away, and our furnaces are replacing the warm air that Mother Nature was providing free of charge just a few short months ago. But is that sunshine that you welcome into your home on these cold winter days really as welcomed as you might have hoped? The winter’s UV rays from the sun can still damage your home’s furniture, draperies, carpets, and wood floors, so it remains a good idea to protect your home’s interior, not to mention eliminating that annoying and blinding glare from the sun coming through your windows and glass doors, reflecting off a nearby lake, pool, or patio. Like sunglasses for your home’s windows, Retractable Sunshades from Screens of East Tennessee can enhance your view of the out-of-doors by filtering the sun while reducing annoying and unwanted glare. Exterior mounted Retractable Sunshades provide a clean look from inside your home without affecting your interior window treatments and operate with your windows whether they are opened or closed. You can maintain your views from your living room and kitchen or opt for a complete “black out” effect in your media room. A variety of fabric types and styles can filter as much or as little light as you

desire, and Screens of East Tennessee offers a wide selection of options to match or complement your home’s décor and color scheme. Unlike permanent shade products, Retractable Sunshades are in place only when you require them and retracted out of sight when you don’t. Usually operated by wireless remote control, motorized shades can be raised and lowered simply and easily to suit your individual needs. They also have the added feature of being operated automatically by an adjustable sun sensor or can be incorporated into many home automation control systems. Many homeowners already use Retractable Sunshades to prevent passive heat gain in the summer months by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching windows and doors, helping to keep your home cooler and more comfortable while reducing energy costs, in addition to providing UV protection for your home’s interior and furnishings. Whether preventing the glaring winter sun or protecting your home from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays, now is a great time to call Screens of East Tennessee to receive your no-cost, no-obligation consultation and estimate for Retractable Sunshades for your home. Think You Won’t Owe Estate Tax? Think Again! By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

T

he current estate tax exemption amount is $11.7 million per spouse before a 40% estate tax kicks in. Think this won’t matter to you? Stay with me and I’ll show you how estate taxes just might reach out and grab you. Changes are on the horizon. Congress tinkers with the estate tax exemption more often than you think. As recently as 2008, the exemption was only $2 million. It’s already legislated to be reduced to $5.5 million per spouse in 2026. The new administration’s tax plan reduces it further to $3.5 million while increasing the rate to 45%. Here’s how that could play out: Let’s suppose the ex-

emption is $3.5 million. A married couple has a combined estate of $3 million when the wife passes away. There’s no estate tax on marital asset transfers…so far, so good. The husband lives another 15 years, and the estate grows to $5 million before passing to their daughter. Since he can only pass $3.5 million tax exempt, the daughter pays estate tax on the excess $1.5 million. At 45%, the cost is $675,000. Whew, that’s a chunk of change. What could the husband have done differently to save his daughter from losing $675,000 to taxes? He could have paid about $250 to have a timely Form 706 estate tax return prepared, where he would have elected the “portability

provision” which allows the surviving spouse to claim their deceased spouse’s unused exemption. Simply by filing that return, he could have claimed his wife’s $3.5 million exemption as his own, raising his total exemption to $7 million. His daughter would have paid $0 estate tax on his $5 million estate. Since he didn’t, the portability was lost. How would he have known about this obscure rule? He didn’t owe any estate taxes when his wife died, so why would he have filed an estate tax return? Truthfully, he couldn’t have known, but his financial advisors should have. It was a $675,000 mistake. As part of our integrated wealth management services, we make it our business to understand these intricate tax rules and advocate for our clients. If your investment professional isn’t talking to you about taxes (or can’t do so without the proper licensing), then you should be talking to us. Our Certified Financial Planners® are also CPA’s. There’s too much at stake to get investment advice without tax advice. The two are intertwined. It’s Still Not Too Late to Lower Your 2020 Tax Bill

T

here’s still time to take steps to lower your 2020 income tax bill. It’s true that most money-saving opportunities are limited after December 31, but there are still a few options you can take to make the tax-filing season cheaper and easier. MAXIMIZE YOUR RETIREMENT CONTRIBUTIONS If you have not already funded your retirement account for 2020, you have until April 15, 2021 to make your contribution to your Traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) and to a Roth Individual Retirement Account (ROTH). If you have a Keogh or Simplified Employee Plan (SEP) and you file for an extension you have until October 15, 2021 to deposit your 2020 contributions into those accounts. However, due to tax-free compounding you may want to make your contribution as soon as possible. Making a deductible contribution will help lower your tax bill this year and your contributions will compound tax deferred. If you contribute $5,000 a year for 20 years in an individual retirement account with an average annual 8% return, your $100,000 in contributions will grow to $247,000. The same investment in a taxable account would only grow to about $194,000 if you are in the 25% federal tax bracket. For 2020, the maximum IRA contribution you can make is $6,000 ($7,000 if you are age 50 or older by the end of the year). To qualify for the full annual IRA deduction in 2020, you must not be eligible to participate in a

Submitted by WarrenJackson

company retirement plan, or if you are eligible, you must have adjusted gross income of $65,000 or less for singles, or $104,000 or less for married couples filing jointly. If you are not eligible for a company plan but your spouse is, your Traditional IRA contribution is fully deductible if your combined gross income does not exceed $196,000. For self-employed persons, the maximum annual addition to SEP’s and Keoghs for 2020 is $57,000. Although choosing to contribute to a Roth IRA instead of a Traditional IRA will not cut your 2020 tax bill, it could be the better choice because all withdrawals from a Roth can be tax-free in retirement and they are not subject to Minimum Required Distributions (RMD’s). Withdrawals from a Traditional IRA are fully taxable in retirement. Withdrawals before reaching 59 ½ may be subject to a 10% early withdrawal penalty. To contribute the full $6,000 ($7,000 if you are age 50 or older by the end of 2020) to a Roth IRA, you must earn $124,000 or less a year if you are single or $196,000 if you’re married and file a joint return. The amount you save for contributing will vary. If you are in the 25% tax bracket and make a deductible IRA contribution of $6,000, you will save $1,500 in taxes. START NOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR TAX RECORDS For many taxpayers, the biggest hassle at tax time is getting all the documentation assembled. As the mail starts to arrive and you start to receive your tax records such as W-2s, 1099s and mortgage interest statements

(Form 1098) be careful not to throw out any tax-related documents, even if they do not look important. It may be helpful to collect receipts and information throughout the year. Identifying a place to save your records throughout the year can reduce the stress and time it takes to locate them at tax time. Filing documents together, putting them in different folders throughout the year can save time at year end. FILE AND PAY ON TIME If you can’t complete and file your return on time, make sure you file an extension request, Form 4868 by April 15, 2021. Filing Form 4868 will give you an extension of the filing deadline until October 15, 2021. The extension is only an extension of the filing due date of the return and does not extend the payment due date. You will need to make a reasonable estimate of your tax liability for 2020 and pay any balance due with your request. Filing for an extension in a timely manner is especially important if you end up owing tax to the IRS. If you file and pay late, the IRS can hit you with a late-filing penalty of 4.5% per month of the tax owed and a late-payment penalty of 0.5% a month of the tax due. The maximum late filing penalty is 22.5% and the late-payment penalty tops out at 25%. Filing Form 4868 can avoid the costly late-filing penalty. GF Environmental Group Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida, has a 35+ year history of providing the world with the safest air, water and food without the use of chemicals. RGF manufactures over 500 environmental products on its 9 acre campus, home to over 130,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Perhaps RGF’s most exciting and recent innovations are their REME HALO residential and commercial air purification system that has been shown to inactivate the SARSCoV-2 virus, commonly known as the coronavirus 2019 or COVID-19. Based on a study which commenced in March 2020, and overseen by Dr. James Marsden, Executive Director of Science and Technology at RGF, Dr. Marsden stated that “the study results show the REME HALO to be effective in combating the COVID-19 virus and a valuable solution to immediately improve the Indoor Air Quality of residential and commercial spaces and protect occupants against exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” The independent third-party study focused on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 using RGF’s proprietary REME HALO air purification system with PHI-Cell technology. The testing was performed at the Innovative Bioanalysis Laboratories in Cypress, California. The virus was nebulized into a large 1,280 cubic foot chamber representing a real-world, air-conditioned office or home. With the REME HALO operating inside the chamber, the virus was reduced on contact resulting in a 99.9% reduction of the virus within the simulated real-world space, reducing the risk of person-to-person infection by respiratory particles and aerosols. This is great news. But the even better news is that you can have the REME HALO air purification system installed in your home today for probably less than you might have imagined. RGF strongly recommends that their REME HALO system only be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. In East Tennessee and the Tellico Lake area the REME HALO air purification system is installed by Gent Heating & Cooling. Gent Heating & Cooling owner, Shane Gent, and his team of highly trained technicians, have earned a well deserved reputation for quality workmanship, professionalism and fairness for over 20+ years. Gent has the REME HALO system in stock and ready for installation. February In the Garden

S

by

Lisa Grugin

ome of you may wonder why I even write a gardening article in the winter. Frankly, this is one of the most critical times of the year for your yard, because this is when the dreaming and planning starts. In order to have a successful season, you need to begin thinking now about what you want to do. Some of you did a lot of work in your yard last year. Some of you did a vegetable garden for the first time, or for the first time in years. Many of you did a lot of container gardens. Whatever you did now is the time to plan how to keep your successes going and fix the failures. If you didn’t do anything, maybe 2021 is your year! The first thing I suggest you do is a good walk-around. Pick a pretty day and venture into all the corners and nooks in your yard so that you can see what is going on. Remember to look up, down, and all around. Look up at tree branches to see if you have sparse canopies, broken or damaged branches, loose bark, woodpecker holes or mushrooms. Look down for weeds, mole tunnels, vole holes, or shallow holes where possums, skunks or raccoons are digging for grubs. Look all around in shrubs, perennials, and annuals for signs of disease or overwintering insects. Do you have plants that need to be pruned, divided, or moved? Make notes and call us if you have any questions. While you are out there, visualize changes that you would like to make. Do you want to add any structures or hardscapes? Would you like a new patio, fountain, fire pit or seating area? Do you have too many deciduous shrubs and not enough evergreens, or do you have a sea of green with no color interest? Think about what you would like to see, and then talk to us about how you can make it happen. Here are some other things that you can do this month: • If a vegetable garden is in your plans, this is a good time to get it ready by tilling processed manure and compost into the soil. All those nutrients will break down

If you did raised beds, work in compost with a shovel. • By the end of the month, it will (hopefully) be warm enough for you to sow greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onion in those beds. • If you have a cold frame, you can start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. • Perennial herbs can be planted indoors, but wait a little longer on annuals and warm season vegetables. I know you want a real tomato, but if you plant a tomato before the ground is warm enough, it will not bear fruit. Patience, grasshopper! • Our winters tend to be erratic, and a 3” layer of mulch helps keep the temperature of the soil more stable. Remember to make donuts and not volcanoes around trees. Piling mulch around the trunk damages the tree. • Yes, you can prune. It always causes my stress level to rise when I say that because some of you will use it as an excuse

to take out all your frustrations for the year on your plants. Please don’t. Educate yourself about what you should and shouldn’t prune and how to prune properly. Please do not commit Crepe murder, and do not prune your spring bloomers or you will have no bloomers. • This is a great time to cut out the privet, honeysuckle and wild grapes that hide amongst your shrubs. That is where you can take out your frustrations! You can also get some really good exercise pulling weeds. Herbicides will not work when it is cold, so please check the directions for minimum spraying temperatures. • Do not forget the birds. They are having a hard time in the cold, and will really appreciate a full, clean feeder. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet will help them stay warm. A heated birdbath will also make their lives ever so much better. It is hard to drink or bathe in ice. There are some things going on in the gardening world that I need to tell you about before I finish up. Number one, there

are some shortages. Chemicals, bagged goods, birding supplies, and garden tools are much harder to get right now. There are several items that I have been out of for months, and no one seems to know when they will be back in stock. There are also shortages in the plant world. Many growers had sold through the 2020 crop by the beginning of September and had tapped into the 2021 crop. What I am telling you is that some plants may not be available or may be smaller than usual. Please be patient. We can’t print out plants on a 3D printer! That is it for this month. I know you will soon have lots of questions about your plants, so don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by. We want to help you have a beautiful home! Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c. “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”

“M

oving to Tellico Village has been one of the best decisions we’ve made, and choosing Keener Homes to build our dream retirement home was also a great decision.

We had built five homes previously, so we knew what was important in selecting a builder, particularly since we would be building long distance. Once we purchased our lot in 2013, we traveled to Tellico several times for several years to meet and interview builders. Fortunately, we met Kit during one of our first trips, and we found ourselves comparing each of the other six builders to Keener Homes. During those trips, we were able to walk through a number of Kit’s homes in various stages of construction both in Tellico Village and in Rarity Bay. The quality and attention to detail was evident in all his homes, regardless if the home was in the $200,000 range or in the million dollar range. During one trip, we attended an open house for a new builder and met a couple who volunteered that they had built with Kit Keener and invited us to see their home. Listening to an unsolicited description of their positive building experience with Kit spoke volumes to us. After seeing his homes, comparing him with other builders, and speaking with his clients, we knew selecting Kit was the right decision. We frequently say we love Kit Keener and the Keener Home team, and recently, someone asked us why we think so highly of them. There is not one reason, but many reasons. Kit Keener and the Keener Homes team have met and exceeded every expectation, and we had none of the pain points we have experienced with prior builds. They are very organized, which was especially important in making the best use of our time when we traveled here for inspections and/or product selections. Kit spent a lot of time with us learning what was important to us and making suggestions that improved our ideas. Kit and Krisha communicated on a regular basis, so we knew what was happening and when. When something was in question, Kit asked our opinion rather than just proceeding. He was gracious in making changes during the building process when we had a request. His tradespeople are highly skilled and do exceptional work, and his vendors have good selections available. He delivered everything he said he would and more. He and Krisha have been equally helpful even after we closed, and they have been very quick to address any punch-list issues. We would readily choose Kit if we were to build again. So you see why we always say, ‘We love our builder, Keener Homes.’” – Joe & Freddie Jacob

Are You Tired of Dry, Cracking, Itchy Skin?

By david Brewster, Owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

or the longest time, I thought it was the grass that caused my dry, flaky, itchy skin. As a kid growing up in the country, that made the most sense to my parents when itchy, red bumps formed on my skin! Typically we managed it by grabbing a bottle of lotion formulated for “skin relief” or visiting the dermatologist when the pain worsened. Those creams and even the dermatologist only helped temporarily. It wasn’t until I got into the water treatment business that I discovered what the CAUSE of my dry skin was - my water! Below are the top 3 skin irritants that were present in my water and are most likely in yours! 1. Chlorine: The water I bathed in had as much chlorine, if not more, than a swimming pool. Chlorine is made to kill bacteria, and it’s extremely effective at destroying both the good and bad kind. This means your dehydrated skin could be because of your water killing off the good bacteria that lives on your skin’s surface. 2. Hardness: Hard water has high levels of calcium and magnesium. This caused a soap film on my skin and hair, just like on your glass shower door. Why, you ask? The chemicals in soap bind to the dissolved rock in your water, which clogs your pores and strips your hair of essential oils. Soft water can eliminate that soap build-up and begin to heal your skin. 3. Chromium: Have you ever heard of Erin Brockovich? This is the chemical she fought the power company, PG&E, over! Many experts consider chromium-6 to be a human carcinogen, which causes skin irritation, serious skin rash, and allergic contact dermatitis, among other things. The grass or our laundry detergent made the most “logical” sense as the culprit of my issues, but once I improved the quality of the water, everything changed. I fixed the CAUSE of my skin issues and stopped merely treating the symptoms. We believe that improving the quality of your water

is the easiest health upgrade you can make. For anyone struggling with skin problems - not only have I been there, but so have hundreds (if not thousands) of my 9,000+ clients until they gave us the opportunity to educate them about WHY they were having skin issues. I’m not a doctor, but I am someone that has improved people’s water for the last 26 years and seen success story after success story! You could have your own success story, and we’d love to help you on that journey! Give us the opportunity to solve your skin issues with one of our whole-home

Kinetico water treatment systems, and you won’t regret it! As an extension of good faith, we’ll give you a 100% refund and uninstall the system if you don’t see results. article appearing on mayoclinic.org, Dr. William F. Marshall, III M.D., points to several studies which have examined the impact of vitamin D on COVID-19. “One study of 489 people found that those who had a vitamin D deficiency were more likely to test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 than people who had normal levels of vitamin D.” “Other research has observed high rates of vitamin D deficiency in people with COVID-19 who experienced acute respiratory failure. These people had a significantly higher risk of dying. And a small, randomized study found that of 50 people hospitalized with COVID-19 who were given a high dose of vitamin D (calcifediol), only one needed treatment in the intensive care unit. In contrast, among the 26 people with COVID-19 who weren’t given calcifediol, 13 needed to be treated in the intensive care unit.” Known as the sunshine vitamin, traditional sun exposure rarely provides an adequate amount of vitamin D. And it is estimated that nearly 40% of Americans are deficient in vitamin D. We can even assist you in scheduling a test to determine if you have a vitamin D deficiency. But before you start popping vitamin D supplements ask yourself these questions: • What type of vitamin D should I take? • Should I avoid synthetic sources of vitamin D? • What is the proper dosage I should take? • Can I trust an unknown manufacturer? • Should I also take a vitamin K supplement along with vitamin D? These are just a few of the considerations you should consider before beginning a vitamin D regimen. Need some guidance? At believeRX we have helped many individuals just like you to achieve their optimal health.
