Treat Your Sweetheart to the Ultimate

Sweetwater Valentine Shopping & Dining Experience

V

alentine’s Day is on the horizon, and it’s high time to nail down those sweet Valentine’s Day plans. Odds are you’re beset on all sides by so many options promising to make your own sweetheart’s day one he or she will never forget. But one date night option stands out from all the others this year, and we are thrilled to announce the Sweetwater Flower Shop and Upstairs at the Mansion joint Romantic Valentine’s Dinner event! If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of visiting the Sweetwater Flower Shop, allow us to set the scene. Located in historic downtown Sweetwater, this flower shop has a well-earned reputation for quality and exceptional customer service not spanning just a few years, or even a few decades, but a whole century. Thriving over time by expanding customer offerings and services, this shop, which was initially known for its fresh cut flowers and arrangements in the 1920s, now also

provides a constantly growing selection of beautiful boutique gifts, silk florals, women’s apparel and accessories, seasonal items, designer-inspired jewelry, art, and now, even the Upstairs at the Mansion Restaurant. In addition, the Shop also offers seasonal decorating, custom graveside pieces, and custom interior and exterior silks. While well-known as a destination for shopping aficionados throughout East Tennessee and beyond, what is often best remembered by visitors is Sweetwater Flower Shop’s own brand of southern

hospitality where customers become friends immediately upon entering the Shop. And though having experienced a changing of the guard with Sweetwater Flower Shop’s previous owner of well over fifty years Jack Wilson passing the torch to new owners, wife and husband team, Casey and Derek Camp, that brand is stronger than ever. And with the Upstairs at the Mansion Restaurant having opened January 31st on the second story of the Sweetwater Flower Shop, customers can expect a brand-new chapter of excitement to unfold

this month that you just can’t miss. After all, Upstairs at the Mansion Restaurant owners dynamic husband and wife duo Shawn and Adrianne have both come from rich backgrounds in the food service industry. Adrianne’s great grandmother started a drive-in BBQ joint long ago in Jonesboro Georgia, and Adrianne’s first job was at Boruff’s Drive-In in downtown Sweetwater. Discovering a love and passion in her work, she consistently found Continued on page 2A ...

herself coming back again and again to the restaurant industry. Shawn’s history is no less devoted to promoting quality food and customer service, as years ago he worked at Carrabba’s Restaurant, before transitioning to fast food management, and finally to a job as kitchen manager at Countryside Restaurant in Vonore, where he put years of honing recipes to the test and created many successful specials. “It has always been our dream to open a restaurant of our own. When our first option fell through, we trusted God to lead us to the right place. After we started chatting with Casey and Derek, everything just fell into place, and we knew our prayers had been answered,” shared Adrianne. And they have now hit the ground running at Upstairs at the Mansion. Located on the shop’s second level, Upstairs at the Mansion features an upscale antebellum décor complete with raised ceilings, crystal chandelier lighting,

rich, decorative wood molding, and exquisite table linens and place settings. The perfect oasis from shopping, Upstairs at the Mansion offers busy shoppers to Sweetwater’s iconic historic downtown retail district the perfect venue to pause with friends and family. Following their soft opening on January 31st, restaurant hours currently run 11:00AM – 4:00PM Monday to Friday, with other times available for private events. Once the weather improves, Shawn and Adrianne plan to expand to also provide Saturday and Sunday brunch, and, once summer arrives, aim to open some evenings as private parties allow. Using the best ingredients possible, including farm to table and seasonal items, Upstairs at the Mansion offers a limited regular menu including a Chef Salad, Club Sandwich, Grilled Chicken and Grilled Shrimp, and focuses on their daily specials and panini.

With introductions taken care of, it’s time to delve into the details of your ideal Romantic Valentine’s Dinner! Available for 4 days only, February 11th to the 14th, from 5:00PM-8:30PM, call Shawn and Adrianne in advance at (423)807-0541 to make this special dinner reservation priced at $175 per couple (plus $22 gratuity). Enjoy personalized place settings, a special dozen rose bouquet or custom centerpiece arranged from Casey at the Shop. The delicious menu for this special event includes: » An appetizer for two – either Shrimp Cocktail or a very special Valentine’s Charcuterie Board » Three entree choices – Hand-cut Filet, Ribeye, or Chicken Florentine » Choice of side dishes - Roasted Red potatoes, Cauliflower Rice, Steamed Vegetables, Bacon Wrapped Asparagus, or Garlic Mashed Potatoes » Also includes Salad, Dessert, and Beverage Chocolate covered strawberries will also be available to add to your Romantic Valentine Dinner experience. As an added bonus, guests will experience the music of live pianist and Sweetwater favorite, Dr. Hugh McCampbell. Dr. McCampbell comes from a long line of farmers and musicians. Growing up on a dairy farm, he also raised pigs and steers for 4H. He broke his first horse at age 7 and has been around them ever since. His mother was a church organist and pianist, and his daddy could really sing. Hugh and his brothers started in grammar school bands and branched out to all kinds of music from there. In college, he decided

to add to what few piano lessons he had and was determined to learn to play the piano better. It was logical for him to become a large animal Veterinarian, and hence a Veterinar Pianist – quite the unique combination! His 14th Annual Benefit Verterinar Piano Concert is Saturday, March 19th at Sweetwater Elementary School Auditorium. Dr. McCampbell’s skill at the piano will be the perfect finishing touch to your Valentine’s dinner. This one-of-a-kind Valentine’s experience has limited availability, so don’t put off making your reservation. Whether you’re planning to come with your significant other, arranging a double-date, or coming with family and friends, enjoy a unique experience of shopping through Sweetwater Flower Shop’s lovely boutique offerings, before coming up the stairs to enjoy a perfect Valentine dinner at a table personalized just for you, with a fresh cut flower arrangement and live music adding the finishing touch. Just dial (423)807-0541, make your reservation, and then sit back knowing you’ve secured your own special sweetheart the romantic Sweetwater Valentine dining and shopping date of a lifetime! Sweetwater Flower Shop Open Mon – Fri 9am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm 423.337.6623 Upstairs at the Mansion 11:00AM – 4:00PM Monday to Friday, available for Private Parties 423.807.0541 118 W. February Highlights From the Publisher

ove. That seems to be the traditional theme for the month of February. And yet, there are so many different types of love. We love food, we love cars, we love stores, we love vacations, movies, jokes, and so on. We love people. We love our friends and our family; those who truly make our lives worthwhile. There are those we love unconditionally; and those who love and accept us – despite our faults. There’s romantic love; the love we show to that extra special someone that rocks our world and whom we just can’t live without – our sweethearts, our significant others, our beloved. This tends to be the traditional focus of Valentine’s Day. But, the highest love of all is Agape love. The Greek word agape is used for God’s love toward us and for the love that we should display toward one another. Some call this “charity” – as described in 1 Corinthians 13; some call it sacrificial love. I’ve learned to love this East Tennessee area. I love the mountains, the trees, and the GREEN! We are blessed with scenic beauty, mild weather and lingering sunsets. We have recreational opportunities with hiking trails in the parks and Smokies, fishing, boating and water sports on our many lakes and beautiful country drives. However, what stands out even more, is the people. The people who, on a daily basis, quietly and unassumingly serve one another. Tennessee truly deserves to be called the Volunteer State; there are so many who have made helping others - serving others - a way of life. It’s just what you do. I believe that is how we show love to our neighbor. So, during this challenging month with winter weather still lingering and cloudy days more the norm than sunshine, we have a bright spot to celebrate - Valentine’s Day. It’s a day we can make plans for a special night at home and have a wonderful dinner or get away to a favorite warmer location. However, you choose to show your love, I know your Valentine will appreciate any plans you took the time to make happen or any special gift you chose just for him or her. But I also know that you, the amazing people of East Tennessee, don’t need a special day to demonstrate your love for one another. You show it every day with acts large and small. It’s just what you do. I hope your Valentine’s Day is filled with joy and happiness in spite of the pandemic. So, from all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we wish all of you a very Happy Valentine’s Day and many blessings of your own.

Worry Has No Room in Retirement

’m in the business of transformation – transforming clients’ financial lives from uncertainty to confidence, from nagging worry to assured, peace-of-mind. And the benefits ripple through their retirement years – creating a larger lifestyle because they have a solid plan in place which brings the mental relief to let go of worry and enjoy retirement. We create that transformation by looking at retirement risks head-on and creating a plan for each. Let’s look at the financial threat of an unexpected health event for example. In East Tennessee, the average cost of home health care and assisted living is over $40,000/year and a full-skilled care facility is over $70,000/year. If you need to withdraw taxable money from your IRA to pay for these costs, add about a 22% tax cost to those numbers and you’re looking at $50,000 to $90,000/year. There’s

a way to create a tax-free pool of long-term care dollars, and it’s as easy as shifting money from your left pocket to your right pocket. How? Reallocate a portion of your savings to an asset-based long term care policy. Based on your age and general health, the insurance company provides you a guaranteed 2 to 4 times multiple of your investment as a tax-free LTC pool, which you can use to pay the full gamut of care costs – from home health aides to assisted living and full-skilled facilities. Customize your policy with inflation growth guarantees, and the length of time you’d like your LTC pool to last. And there is no “use it or lose it” – if you never need LTC, your policy has a tax-free death benefit for your heirs, or you can even cancel the policy and request your money back. The LTC benefits and premiums are guaranteed at issue, and you can either pay a one-time policy premium or spread the premium out over 5 to 10 years. Policies can be issued through age 80, so it’s not too late! Tax-free asset based LTC policies are a clever way to hedge your

“He changes times and seasons” – Daniel 2:21

imes and seasons indeed do change, and this is most certainly true at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Tellico Village. Our congregation began as a second campus ministry of a larger Lutheran Church in Knoxville but quickly grew and became full-fledged congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in record time. The periods of transition we continue to experience bind us together and we constantly become a stronger, more vibrant flock. Pastor Ingrid Schalk has been our shepherd for the last 5 ½ years and has guided us through some major challenges – most visibly working through the ever-changing Covid restrictions and the purchase and renovations of our church facility which has been accomplished even during the pandemic. She has been a gift that we will be forever grateful for and wish her Godspeed as her “times and seasons” change and she begins a new chapter. Shepherd of the Lake also begins a new season as we experience the arrival of an interim pastor and choose a call committee to work with the ELCA Synod to discern a new shepherd for the flock at Shepherd of the Lake. We continue to move full steam ahead with shared Bible studies, the various ministries we support, and fellowship with both our church family and shared with the community. Coming up on March 17 from 9 am-2 pm we will be inviting all the women of the community to attend a Women’s Spring Day Retreat, “God is Talking in Our Sleep: Dreams in Scripture, Tradition, and Our Own Experience” presented by Laura Huff, a certified Dream Mentor and Spiritual Director. Save the date and watch for details. We are experiencing an exciting time in our congregation. We invite you to worship with us on Sunday mornings at 9 am and join us for fellowship and coffee in our Friendship Hall after worship.

On our way rejoicing, as we homeward move, hearken to our praises, O blest God of love!

~ Who Says, You Can’t Go Home? ~

M

any people have formed stereotypes of the folks that work in the salon industry. Among the many, we are often thought of as creative, expressive, temperamental, and maybe a little fickle about our places of employment. These qualities can often lead to frequent changes in employment and can also result in faithful guests having to make the choice of following their provider or staying in their current salon. Brian K. Whitehead If the distance between the last salon and the Managing Partner new salon a provider moves to is reasonable, The Village Salon they can easily expect to have at least half of their practice follow them to their new place. This makes perfect sense given the personal nature of most salon services. Most times when your provider is about to make a change, they will notify you before hand, and invite you to follow them to their new salon. However, when the change is sudden with little if any notice, you may face a difficult decision or have difficulties locating your exiting stylist. Most salons will be happy to provide you with the new location of a stylist that has left, while at the same time inviting you to try someone else there. But you can go home. We currently have three teammates here at our salon that have left for other opportunities and then returned. We would like to give a warm welcome back to Miss Christy Ingram, who returned from sabbatical at the end of the year. Miss Christy will of course return with a significant practice, and next December, will become our seventh member of The Village Salons Twenty Year Club. So, if you have been missing Miss Christy, now you know where to find her.

The Lakeside Renovations You’ve Been Looking For Volume 22, No. 2

oes your home match your vision for what it should be? If it falls short, as is so often the case, have you considered renovating your home, only to push the thought aside because the project either seemed too small to warrant it, or too big to be realistic? Perhaps you’ve struggled to find renovators you can trust to make your dream a reality. If this describes you right now, then it’s our pleasure to introduce you to Mike and Lisa Tapola and their local, family-run business, Lakeside Renovations. MV: So, tell us a little about yourselves and what inspired you to move your family out to Tennessee? Lisa: We are from Southern California, born and raised. Mike and I got married as high school sweethearts and are now blessed with 3 amazing children. As for what led us to move out to Tennessee, we really felt like God was leading us out of our home state due to the wrong direction California was headed. We traveled to 33 different states before we found beautiful Tennessee, and Tellico Village, and have been proud to call it home ever since. MV: Mike, how did you get started renovating houses? Mike: I have worked doing construction since I was a teenager, but I have my wife to thank for encouraging me to break into the renovation industry. Thanks to Lisa’s obsession with HGTV home renovation shows, she talked me into buying our first renovation project. She had faith I could do it, and with my skills and her knack for design and

strict time schedule, our business has taken off ever since. MV: And, where your business has taken you since then? Mike: Before we moved to Tennessee, I completed our first renovation and dream home, which we lived in for 10 years before heading out of California. From that house, we were able to buy 3 homes in Tennessee that we successfully renovated and sold. Once the market shifted away from flipping houses, we moved to home renovations. One of our clients, also from California, lives near us in Kahite/Tellico Village, and thanks to Lakeside Renovations, now enjoys a new, fully-renovated kitchen. MV: Tell us about one of your most challenging home renovation projects. Lisa: That would have to be a custom-built, 3800 sq. ft. house, and it was a foreclosure. Everything had been stripped from the home including the floors, kitchen, toilets, doors, you name it – it was missing, including the electrical. Mike: That was a huge challenge, but also worked as a blank canvas we could completely recreate all brand new. MV: What do you feel sets you apart from other home renovators? Mike: I believe what makes us different is we are a familyowned business that understands the importance of being honest and reliable. We have a passion for home renovation and take great pride in our quality of workmanship, from my own manual labor to my wife’s skills in design and giving

clients the greatest range of options and ideas. Our business philosophy has and will always be to treat our clients the way we would want to be treated. MV: It seems like most contractors are so busy today that they don’t have time to call people back when they ask for an estimate. Or, once a job is started, clients don’t know when things are going to be done due to a lack of communication. How do you deal with those concerns? Lisa: We know that many renovation and construction workers are not readily available right now, due to staffing shortages or taking on way too many jobs. Here at Lakeside Renovations, we only take on one job at a time and are honest and realistic about when we can get you on the schedule. MV: Is there anything else you’d like to say to our readers? Mike: Our goal is not to have quantity, but to strive for quality and the utmost satisfaction from our customers. So, we hope to hear from you soon for all your renovation projects, both big and small. Don’t wait any longer. Take the first step in making your home renovation a reality, and call Lakeside Renovations at 661-992-6333. Allow them to wow you with their excellent customer service and commitment to top-notch, quality results. Lakeside Renovations Mike Tapola 661.992.6333

A World Worth Hearing

ave you lost your ear for music? We discover so many gifts through our sense of hearing. It’s how we hear our parent’s voices for the first time. It’s how we can enjoyably experience the rain, which our sense of touch might otherwise write off as a cold, wet nuisance. It’s one of the methods that ensures our friends and family know just how much we love and care for them. And it provides the gateway to the realm of music. Music is a world all its own. The piano, the violin, the cello, and the guitar, are but a small sample of the players populating this world, that each still convey detailed scenes and heart-felt emotions. Consider the piano. Its range of keys varies in frequency from tones lower than the most grounded bass and reaches several steps higher than the most ambitious soprano, allowing the musician to bring to life

the classic, sweet, yet sometimes frenetic tunes of Beethoven’s Fur Elise, as well as delve into the ever-shifting moods of jazz. Whether it be a simple mother’s lullaby, a rousing national anthem, or the old worship hymns, music and song carry our hearts through the highs and lows of human experience where there is always a new song to discover, and the depths of harmony and melody are never truly plumbed. Our sense of hearing remains the gateway to this world, and our continued access remains contingent on the state and well-being of that hearing. So, what happens when age begins to set in, and our range of hearing begins to narrow? The signs that it’s happening aren’t always obvious. Certain frequencies may still reach you quite effectively, while others become very difficult to detect, no matter how high the volume. Because of

this, the songs you knew so well no longer sound the same and may not even sound like music at all. For some, it may be difficult to acknowledge this is happening, thinking it an admission of advancing age. But denying it’s happening and leaving it untreated can exacerbate not just the loss of hearing, but the loss of other senses, such as balance and cognitive function, making this period of transition in life that much harder. It’s true that most hearing loss occurs as we age, but just as corrective lenses can overcome loss of 20/20 vision, loss of hearing can be likewise addressed. The new hearing aids we sell are not your grandma’s hearing aids of years ago! Thanks to new strides in technology, you may no longer have to settle with going without your favorite songs, much less worry about whether you’ll be able to properly participate in everyday life

and conversation. So, ask yourself, what is the next step then? Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation of your/ their current hearing situation. Yes, it’s free, and it’s that easy. Experience the compassionate care that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Remember, Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, but he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Call us today and take the first step toward reclaiming the tones and frequencies, spoken word and songs, that have passed you by till now. Let us help you reopen the gate so you can again experience a world worth hearing. Tellico Hearing Solutions, PLLC 865-635-1887 contact@TellicoHearingSolutions.com www.tellicohearingsolutions.com

mbarrassed by the ugly black streaks or moss on your roof, but concerned the cleaning process would damage it? It’s a reasonable concern. After all, certain roof cleaning methods such as pressure washing can cause your roof significant damage. Asphalt shingles are especially fragile, and high-pressure water can – and will – cause problems. But what exactly are those troublesome stains on your roof, and what issues can stem from them? Caused by natural contaminants, the algae forming these stains aren’t just an eyesore to look at, but can also permanently damage roofing materials, shortening shingle life by as much as 30%, which can lead to you needing to replace your roof prematurely. Even repairing small portions of a damaged roof is more expensive than a roof cleaning, but if homeowners elect to pressure clean their roof, they can unwittingly cause even more damage to the roof than before. That’s where Clean Roof LLC comes in. We will professionally clean your roof using a soft wash process that will make it look great as well as potentially increase its lifespan, and are properly insured, trained, and licensed to clean and maintain your roof. What sets us apart from other roof cleaning companies? As former roof installers, we are trained and insured specifically for roof cleaning, which is different from pressure washing. We are so confident in our process; we also guarantee our results. We have researched the recommendations from each shingle manufacturer so we can tailor our cleaning treatment accordingly. From shingle to tile, we have installed and maintained all sorts of of roofs, and, because of our experience, we have especially skilled knowledge for cleaning your shingles safely without voiding your manufacturer’s warranty. It’s very important to us to provide great customer service, especially in this market. If I don’t pick up the phone when you call, I will give you a call back within 24 hours. After you decide to use us, we strive to be in constant communication with you until the job is done. In addition to roof cleaning, we also can clean your siding and gutters, do roof repairs, and if you wish, we can set up an annual or bi-annual plan to make sure your roof & gutters are always clean. We can even safely remove your old satellite dish! It only takes one look up to realize a clean, well-maintained roof is key to preserving not just the function, but outward beauty and appeal of your house. So, if you are sick and tired of the unsightly streaks and discolorations on the top or even sides of your home, give me a call at 865-3136779 or visit our website at www.cleanroofllc.com. There is no cost for an estimate. The only thing you have to lose are the ugly stains on your roof! Clean Roof LLC 576 Foothills Plaza #180 Maryville, TN 37801 865.313.6779 www.cleanroofllc.com

t’s only natural to compare your smile to the smiles of others who exhibit beautiful, straight, white teeth. Perhaps it’s time you discovered just how easy it can be to achieve your very own whiter, brighter smile. After all, how many of those people whose smiles you envy were actually born with that perfect smile? Probably not many. Let’s consider teeth straightening first. Did you know that there is a procedure – in fact, the most advanced teeth straightening system available anywhere – that has already helped more than six million people achieve straighter, more natural looking smiles? Called Invisalign, these transparent aligners incrementally adjust your teeth without the use of wire braces. Invisalign is the world’s most advanced clear aligner. By combining 20 years of research and data from six million smiles, you can trust Invisalign to deliver the smile that you deserve. And while there are other clear aligners on the market, you are encouraged to examine these alter-

natives very closely. According to the Better Business Bureau, there have been more than 1,800 consumer complaints across the country filed against one such Invisalign competitor promising significant savings with their DIY, in-home alignment system. These same complaints allege that patients have had to spend from $800 to $5,500 to correct the misalignment resulting from the use of these DIY aligners. Invisalign is a modern, fully digitized experience designed to help you achieve the smile you want, the way you want it. Unlike other competitive clear aligners, Invisalign aligners use a proprietary SmartTrack® material that offers treatment times that are up to 50% faster, with greater predictability and control than competitive aligners.

Also, what you will appreciate most about the Invisalign system is that it is administered and supervised by your family dentist and not some third party dentist or orthodontist who will recommend a treatment without ever having examined you personally. After all, who knows you better than your family dentist? To learn how Invisalign can help you achieve the smile you’ve always wanted, call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 today to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation evaluation. Fabulous Closet Trends in 2022

A

s primary bedroom suites have gotten larger, so have the closets. Today’s primary closets are about spacious organization and no more fighting over clothing space. “Closets have evolved from simply being a basic, and often problematic, storage area to becoming customized spaces to meet a homeowner’s individual needs and style,” explained Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Most importantly, no matter the size, it’s about maximizing storage space to keep clothes ordered, crumple-free and everything easy to see.” What are today’s trends? The design professionals at Tailored Living of Knoxville have noticed: Bigger is Better While new home construction includes larger primary bedrooms; during the pandemic, many homeowners have chosen to renovate their bedroom suite to create a much larger closet area. Often, two closets are included in the master suite to accommodate separate his and her clothing spaces. Neutral Tones In a closet, neutrals are by far the most popular color tone. Closet systems most popular colors are neutrals like white, wood-grain grays or white and other soft, light finishes. The ideal closet allows the homeowner to make a statement with organization, not color. Add Flair with Hardware Add a statement to your closet with personalized hardware. Knobs, handles, and clothing rods are available in an array of styles and finishes such as gold, nickel, brushed nickel, oiled brass, and more. When you add hardware with an extra pop, you give a closet a lot of personal personality. Everyone Loves an Island If there is enough space, islands are definitely the most requested closet feature. People love having this boutique-inspired element for extra storage and the horizontal surface to place everyday items like a purse or to use it for folding clothing and packing. However, using a flat front, which is often less expensive, gives the closet a more modern look. Another popular option is to substitute glass door fronts in the place of solid wood. Each style can give the closet a completely different feel. Jewelry Drawers No more mismatched earrings and hard-to-find jewelry. Velvet-lined jewelry drawers offer scratch-resistant

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

Try A New Perspective Are you in the middle of a home redesign? If so, you're probably experiencing one of the following: - design paralysis, where decisions may lie in limbo for months or years, - design impatience, buying furnishings the wrong size or color in a haste to make a decision and "get it done," often hating it later. It's also a good idea to try a new perspective by having trained home professionals come and meet with you about your space. We start each design with you in mind, balancing your style aesthetic, your functional needs, and your budget. We make it fun and easy to make your home decisions. believeRX is a full-service traditional pharmacy where you can get all of your medications and supplements, as well as receive a personal approach to your health. They believe there is more than one way to prevent or treat disease and they offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more. believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic! Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. When I was growing up, my dad owned a pharmacy in a small town in California. Like believeRX, he also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. He even had an ice cream and soda fountain. Also, like believeRX, it was very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. My dad knew his customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, I used to feel like I was treated like I was only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that I feel that it would be a step-up for them to treat me like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging to me that believeRX still believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service. believeRX even has a modern/healthy version of the old-fashioned soda fountain: believeRXtra Fresh Juices and Smoothies! To experience a friendly, caring pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today! believeRX/believeRXtra

It is cold and dreary, my bank account and waistline are still trying to recover from the holidays, and trying to get ready for spring this year makes me want to swear and drink alcohol. I digress. February is actually a good time for gardeners because it’s when the dreaming and planning can begin. You are stuck inside where you can watch all those gardening shows or go through Pinterest and plan the beautiful garden of your dreams. I will remind you, however, that some of those lovely plants you see will not do well here. Also many of the gardening programs show lawns so desperately overplanted that I want to call the producer and scream ugly things at them. Like overpriced landscaping companies, they will install 60 plants when 20 is a far more reasonable number. They want things to look TV ready and don’t give a flying flip that you will be pulling up or cutting down half the plants in 3-5 years because of overcrowding. Swearing, drinking, screaming… can you tell I don’t like winter? There will be some pretty days this

month, and that is when you need to go outside and do a good walk around. Do you have plants that need to be pruned, divided, or moved? Do you have some that need to be composted? Do you have bare spots that need to be filled? Do you have too many deciduous shrubs and not enough evergreens, or do you have a sea of green with no color interest? This is also a good time to visualize changes that you would like to make. Do you want to add any structures or hardscapes? Would you like a new patio, fountain, fire pit, or seating area? Think about what you want to see, then talk to us about how you can make it happen. While you are out there, check for problems or potential problems. Remember to look up, down, and all around. Look up at tree branches to see if you have sparse canopies, broken or damaged branches, loose bark, woodpecker holes, or mushrooms. Look down for weeds, mole tunnels, vole holes, or shallow holes where possums, skunks, or raccoons are digging for grubs. Look all around for signs of disease or overwintering insects. Make notes and call us if you have any questions. Here are some other things that you can do this month:

9885 HIGHWAY 11E, LENOIR CITY, TN 37772 WWW.MEADOWVIEWGREENHOUSE.COM • 865-986-7229 Are you going to do a veggie garden this year? This is a good time to get it ready by tilling processed manure and compost into the soil. If you have raised beds or container gardens, work in compost with a shovel or trowel so the nutrients can begin spreading into the soil. By the end of the month, it will (hopefully) be warm enough for you to sow greens, lettuce, peas, radishes, and onions. If you have a cold frame, you can start cold weather veggies such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage. Perennial herbs can be planted indoors, but wait a little longer on annuals and warm season vegetables. There is always a race to see who can get tomatoes earliest, but remember that if you plant in cold soil, you will get much less fruit. Patience is a virtue! A 3 inch layer of mulch on gardens and flower beds helps keep the temperature and moisture levels of the soil more stable. Remember to make donuts and not volcanoes around trees. Piling mulch around the trunk damages it. Yes, you can prune. Educate yourself about what you should and shouldn’t prune and how to prune properly. Please do not commit Crepe murder, and do not prune your spring bloomers or you will have no blooms. This is a great time to cut out the priv-

et, honeysuckle, and wild grapes that hide amongst your shrubs. You can also get some really good exercise pulling weeds. Herbicides will not work when it is cold, so please check the directions for minimum spraying temperatures. Do not forget the birds. They are having a hard time in the cold and will really appreciate a full, clean feeder. High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet will help them stay warm. A heated birdbath will create a spa! We are still experiencing some challenges with supply chain issues and grower lag. Some trees and shrubs will take 3-5 years to reach sellable size, so you may see smaller sizes. Some plants will simply be unavailable for now. We are also having trouble sourcing some bagged goods, chemicals, birding supplies, and gift items. Please be patient. We are doing the best we can. I know you will soon have lots of questions about your plants, so don’t hesitate to give us a call or stop by. We want to help you have a beautiful yard! East Tennessee’s Oriental Rug Washing Specialists

aunched in 1985, Superior Rug Cleaning quickly earned a reputation for quality and affordable home and commercial carpet cleaning in East Tennessee. During its 37-year history, Superior Rug Cleaning owner, Kerry McDuffie, also earned a reputation as an innovative entrepreneur who routinely invested in new, state-of-the-art technology. These technological advances not only helped successfully differentiate Superior from its competition, but it also resulted in far superior cleaning results for its customers. Today, as ever-growing numbers of homeowners and businesses are choosing hand-crafted Oriental rugs to replace wallto-wall carpeting, Superior Rug Cleaning

has once again demonstrated its talent for innovation. Superior has built a state-ofthe-art Oriental rug washing boutique that safely and affordably cleans and revitalizes your family’s Oriental rugs. Aside from their obvious visual differences, Oriental rugs and carpets are created very differently. Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting. Genuine Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of art they are creating.

Each rug tells a story based on its origin and time in history in which it was created. These rugs are truly art for your floor. It’s important to understand that the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the handcrafting of Oriental rugs requires a different cleaning process than that traditionally used on conventional carpeting. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken to ensure that dyes remain stable during the entire cleaning process. While wall-to-wall carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, Oriental rugs must be washed using pure deionized cold water and natural fiber safe washing agents, then thoroughly rinsed, and hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room. Oriental rug buyers often invest a great deal of time and money in selecting just the right designs, colors, sizes, and natural materials they want in their rugs. Many heirloom quality rugs are passed down from generation to generation. However, a thorough knowledge of construction, fiber, and dye content is required to correctly, and safely, wash each rug. Superior Rug Cleaning is certified by a national certification board called the IICRC. Kerry and his staff attend classes and seminars regularly to learn and keep up with the latest in rug washing knowledge and advancements in technology. After visiting numerous other rug washing facilities nationally and attending a variety of schools and seminars, Kerry decided to create a state of the art rug washing boutique. Located in Farragut, this state-of-the-art facility features his proprietary 11 step washing process designed to provide a rug washing experience unavailable anywhere else. In fact, as advancements are made in the industry, Kerry continues to invest in this new technology to deliver even better results. In fact, the recently purchased Marinator Decon System cleans your rugs from the inside out by moving up to 80 gallons of deionized washing solution per

minute through rugs to safely clean those difficult inner and back sides of your rugs. A Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor was also recently installed that replaces the wash pits used by the competition. The Centrum only uses clean deionized water to wash your rugs. The best way to differentiate the two systems is to compare them to your choice of a morning shower or a bath. With a shower you always bathe in clean water. If you are a pet owner, chances are you’ve had a rug ruined by pet urine. Though most rugs can be safely and successfully cleaned in Superior’s state-of-the-art rug washing boutique, the presence of pet urine or other animal accidents can compromise the dyes and degrade the natural fiber makeup of your rugs. Based on the construction of the rug, 100% removal of urine cannot always be guaranteed, although using their proprietary washing process, Superior Rug Cleaning has had good results. So, the presence of pet urine does not necessarily mean that your rug is ruined. Time is of the essence, so act quickly when an unexpected accident occurs. Find out more by visiting www. SuperiorofKnoxville.com, email Kerry at info@SuperiorofKnoxville.com, call/ text him at 865-680-1450, or look up Superior Rug Cleaning on Facebook. Throughout their 37 years in business, Kerry has remained committed to delivering the highest level of quality and customer satisfaction in the industry. Hundreds of satisfied customers give testimony to that fact. “Quality plus service equals superior value… guaranteed!” You and your rugs deserve the decades of experience that Superior Rug Cleaning can offer to ensure that your rugs are thoroughly and safely cleaned. ebruary has arrived, and with it the customary swell of red, pink, and white decorations in business fronts, chocolate displays in stores, and dinner reservations at high-end restaurants, all heralding that Valentine’s Day is coming around once again. Some people look forward to this holiday as a chance for quality time with one’s spouse or significant other, while others may have some trepidation, wondering if their gifts and preparations will live up to the expectations of their nearest and dearest. But for those who have seen their fair share of Valentine’s Days come and go, the truth remains that after the last piece of candy is eaten, and the final flower in the bouquet wilts, it’s the everyday, seemingly mundane gifts that, while more humble in appearance and concept, last not just to the next Valentine’s Day, but through all of them. We all know thoughtful gift-giving is a key aspect of demonstrating love for our family, and each gift, whether great or small, glamorous or practical, has its place. But actively planning for your own retirement and for the future of your loved ones remains one of the most key and poignant gifts of all. We’ve all witnessed the difficulties that come with retirement, and know they come in many forms. It can be the loss of a loved one, where the absence of a will makes it difficult to fulfill their final wishes. It can be the elderly couple struggling to subsist solely on Social Security because of inadequate plans for their retirement. These challenges, from the loss of a loved one, to retirement and other eventualities in life are inevitable, but the gift of well thought out plans can often serve to lessen their potential negative impact, not simply on our own lives, but on the lives of our families. If you’ve been tempted to postpone creating such plans, fearful they won’t meet your loved ones needs or expectations, then do not hesitate further. Ask yourself the hard questions. Do you have a will, a medical and financial power of attorney, or a financial plan tailored to help you enjoy retirement to the fullest while seeing to your loved one’s needs after you’re gone? It’s a daunting task to positively answer these questions, but remember, the best gifts of all are a culmination of patience and perseverance, and unless you’re one of the lucky few already equipped to create and execute your financial plan, there is no reason for you to work them out alone. So, enlist the expertise of your own Financial Advisor. Like a florist is skilled in assembling the most gorgeous Valentine bouquets, and the confectioner crafts the best chocolates, your own Financial Adviser is both trained and licensed to assist you in crafting your financial plan against tomorrow’s uncertainties. I invite you to call me today and set up your private, no cost or obligation consultation. In doing so, you’ll be taking the first step in securing a better future for both you and your family. That’s a Valentine gift that won’t just last an evening, but your entire lifetime and beyond. Garage Flooring: Make Sure It’s Durable

G

arage remodeling is currently the fastest-growing segment of the home-improvement industry. It’s a separate room -- and often the largest room in the house -- that is not only a place to park a car, but can be used as a workshop, storage for items that won’t go in the house, or an area to enjoy hobbies. To give a garage a finished look and make it a more user-friendly space that’s easy to clean, renovations usually include a floor coating. While there are a few flooring options, the decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and professionally installed by Premier Garage, doing business in Knoxville for more than 15 years. Do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with. The downside is many things can go wrong while applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tire bonds to the surface and peels it away from the concrete. “There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard-wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option, and floors are designed to last the test of time.” For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other primary benefits of Premier Garage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements, front porches, and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home begins in the garage!

Tax Season Tips and Tricks

T

ax season 2022 is upon us, and there’s no turning back. Opening day kicks off on January 24, 2022. It’s the third coronavirus pandemic tax filing season, and again, that’s expected to cause complexities in filing. Last year, our firm saw that the IRS caused continuous delays, and we expect more of the same for 2022. The good news is that there are still some key tax transactions you can make to reduce the taxes you owe and put you in a better position when filing your return. We have some tips to help you learn more—and please reach out to our team for additional insights that could save you even more this tax season. Rev up your retirement accounts A key tax-saving move is to increase the amount of money you put into your eligible retirement account for 2021. You still have until the April 15 deadline to do so. Making a deductible contribution will lower your tax bill this year and help you create future financial security. For 2021, the maximum IRA contribution is $6,000 ($7,000 if you’re age 50 or older by the end of the year). If you are self-employed, the maximum annual addition to SEPs and Keogh plans for 2021 is $58,000. All these contributions will compound on a tax-deferred basis, which can really lower your tax obligations now. Make any estimated tax payments you owe If you are a self-employed business owner and didn’t pay enough to the IRS in estimated taxes during the year, you may owe a significant amount of tax, interest, and penalties. Per IRS rules, you must pay the lesser of 100 percent of last year’s tax liability or 90 percent of this year’s to avoid an underpayment penalty. (If your adjusted gross income for 2020 was more than $150,000, you

will have to pay more than 110 percent of your 2020 tax liability to be protected from a tax year 2021 underpayment penalty.) If you make an estimated payment by January 15, 2022, you can erase any penalty for the fourth quarter, but you’ll still owe a penalty for any earlier quarters you didn’t pay. (Note: There’s a balance when it comes to paying too much vs. too little in taxes. Paying too much gives the IRS an interest-free loan, and they won’t pay any interest on taxes you overpay.) Determine whether you could benefit from itemizing your deductions The standard deduction may be easier in the short term. But if you are self-employed, own a home or live in a high-tax area, you may save more money by itemizing— especially when your qualified expenses add up to more than the 2021 standard deduction of $12,550 for most singles and $25,100 for most married couples filing jointly. This may be the case if you had significant medical expenses, too. What is the fastest way to get my tax refund? We have a couple of tips to make sure your refund will not get delayed. First, file electronically and choose direct deposit. Second, make sure you have all of your documentation. Those who received the Advanced Child Tax Credit and the Third Economic Stimulus payment will need to gather more documentation than they have in past filing years. For the Child Tax Credit, the IRS will require you to reconcile the payments you have already received on your tax return. The majority of folks received half of the credit in 2021 in monthly installments, unless you opted out. They will receive the second half when they file their tax return. In order to assist you in filing, the IRS is sending out Letter

6419 to provide the total you received in Advanced Child Tax Credit payments. You will need this letter to file and any discrepancies in the totals reported on your return will cause it to be delayed. The 2021 Economic Impact Payment aka “stimulus payment” true up works a bit differently. If you got the full amount for your stimulus payment, you won’t include any information about it when you file your 2021 tax return. The IRS says it will start issuing Letter 6475, Your Third Economic Impact Payment, to individuals who received a third payment and/or plus-up payments in 2021 in late January. While most eligible people already got their stimulus payments, this letter will help individuals determine if they’re eligible to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit for missing stimulus payments. File your taxes and pay them on time Delays happen. If you cannot finish your return on time, make sure you file Form 4868 by April 18, 2022, to get an extension of the filing deadline until October 15, 2022. You will still need to make a reasonable estimate of your tax liability for 2021 and pay any balance due with your request. If you file and pay late, the IRS may assess a late-filing penalty of 4.5 percent per month of the tax owed and a late-payment penalty of 0.5 percent per month of the tax due. LIGHT A CANDLE; BURN THE MORTGAGE The Friends major focus this year will be on the 10th anniversary of the present Library building. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the Public Library at Tellico Village, here is a little history. The Tellico Village Library started in 1987 as a book discussion group, with people sharing books from their personal libraries. In 1989, contact with the Loudon County Library Board resulted in 500 books being placed in a small alcove at the Yacht Club. A Friends of the Library group was incorporated in 1995 with 95 charter members. Membership dues were the first source of income, soon followed by a used book sale, preview party, auction, and other fundraising activities. With proceeds from the above, the Library expanded rapidly and outgrew the Yacht Club alcove. In 1997, the Friends signed a lease for a 1,000 sq ft site at Lakeside Plaza and in October of 1997, the Library became part of the Loudon County Library System with a Library Manager and is open to all County residents as a Public Library. In 2001, the Library had again outgrown its quarters, and in 2002, the Lakeside Plaza location was doubled in size to 2,000 sq ft with renovations, new shelving and furnishings obtained through the generosity of the community and the Friends of the Library.

Since the Library is in an unincorporated area of Loudon County and has no tax base, the Friends provide most of the Library funds, including mortgage, insurance and some operating expenses. The Public Library building is owned by the Friends, they maintain the interior and exterior, i.e. repairs on the air conditioning/heater system this summer required a substantial investment from the Friends. In 2004, the Friends began a program to build a new Library with square footage and resources capable to meet future needs of the community. Land was purchased in 2009 and design of a 6,500 sq ft facility began. Construction began in 2011, and the Library, now called The Public Library of Tellico Village, opened on November 5, 2012. So, you say, this is all interesting but what does it mean? The Friends need your help to pay down the mortgage. While monthly expenses are paid through fundraisers, book sales and memberships, we would like to pay the mortgage down to get out from under the debt. What can I do to help? By making a donation to the Library specifically stating mortgage reduction. A candle will be “lit” in your honor and added to the anniversary cake. Donations can be whatever you feel comfortable giving, and if you choose to make several donations throughout the year, we will be glad to put many candles on the cake for you.

Watch for the announcement of dates and themes. April and September will bring two more teas to the Courtyard. Something new and different this year is a Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre on May 12 and 13 to be held in the Library Courtyard. Details are still being worked out and, as soon as available, we’ll be putting out the publicity. Look for the information in late March, early April. We continue with another book sale in May along with our Memorial Day Patriotic Sing-Along, our golf tournament in June, mini book sale in July, Road Rally in September, the 4B’s in October along with a 4th book sale.
