Colonel Donald Edmands Briefs American Legion Post 256 on the Exploits of “The Band of Brothers” with Comments from WW II Veteran Clinton E. Riddle

parachuting into France on D-Day to capturing Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest at Berchtesgaden. This unit took over 150% casualties and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office. Attending this meeting to add to details of his own exploits during World War II was Purple Heart recipient, 98-year-old PFC Clinton E. Riddle of Sweetwater. PFC Riddle participated in six major campaigns: Two with the 325th Glider Infantry Regiments and four with the 82nd Airborne Division. Riddle was a co-pilot within the Glider Infantry. member of American Legion Post 256, Colonel Donald Edmands, known as a historian and avid researcher into the details of past events of history, briefed Post 256 of the daring acts of “Easy” Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division, World War II. Edmands began with noting the commendable accuracy of the well-known TV series “Band of Brothers.” Colonel Edmands drew much of his detailed briefing from his own research in Europe, where he followed the trail of this famous U.S. Army unit as they fought the Germans across Europe, starting with their initial training in the mountains of North Georgia and following them through their tough assignments in Europe from

impressive record of 83-32-2. In 1974, he was named Coach of the Year and his team won the NCAA Division II National Championship.

Yet, with these accomplishments, Kramer’s true impact on college athletics was only just beginning. In 1978, he returned to his home state of Tennessee as Vanderbilt’s Director of Athletics. Not only was he responsible for orchestrating the renovation of the McGugin Center, but he also piloted the construction of Vanderbilt Stadium. In January 1990, Kramer left Vanderbilt to become the sixth commissioner of the Southeastern Conference. During his 12 years as commissioner, the SEC experienced unparalleled growth. In his first year as commissioner, two new members were added (South Carolina and Arkansas). He guided the conference in formulating divisional play and the inaugural Division I-A conference football championship game. In 1998, Kramer was awarded the Distinguished American Award by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. During his time with the SEC, the conference won 81 national championships – the most ever in a decade by the league.

Rotary Club of Tellico Lake Charity Dinner

he Rotary Club of Tellico Lake will be hosting its annual charity dinner at the First Baptist Church in Tellico Village on Friday, March 22 at 6 pm. This year’s speaker is Roy Kramer, who for years served as Commissioner for the SEC Conference. He will be introduced by Phillip Fulmer from the University of Tennessee. Kramer, a graduate of Maryville College, coached high school football for nearly a decade. From his very first job as a head football coach, Kramer showed that he is a man who puts his words into action. He was once asked what the word “competitive” meant to him. “Excellence,” he replied. “It means you shoot for the top. I feel strongly that you play to win.” Beginning in 1958, Kramer coached three different high school teams in Michigan to undefeated records three years in a row. Certainly a sign of things to come, he then began coaching on the college level in 1967 at Central Michigan University. Kramer stayed at Central Michigan for 11 seasons, compiling an

He oversaw the distribution of a thenleague record $95.7 million to its member institutions for 2001–2002. Kramer negotiated multi-sport national television packages with CBS and ESPN, featuring football and men’s and women’s basketball through the 2008–2009 season. Because of his influence, the Men’s and Women’s SEC Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually as the Roy F. Kramer Award. ho do you call in a medical emergency in Rarity Bay? The first call should be to 911. Rarity Bay is very fortunate to have a group of 11 Rarity Bay residents that are licensed Emergency Medical Responders who will assist until the emergency personnel arrive. The First Responders provide initial emergency care to residents, visitors, and workers, as they are first on the scene. This includes CPR, AED, and controlling bleeding. They are part of the 911 call system and support Monroe and Loudon counties’ Emergency Services professionals. In the fall of 2018, the Rarity Bay Women’s Club (RBWC) held a dedicated fundraiser event open to the community to raise money for our First Responders. Proceeds from this event, along with three additional fundraisers held during the year, allowed the RBWC to present a check to the First Responders for $10,000. This additional funding will help offset the costs of the program, including the training costs for the current and new First Responders. To qualify as an EMR, you must complete 64 hours of classroom training and pass the National Registry Exam. Then

to maintain your EMR status, every two years you must complete 16 hours of continuing education and four hours of CPR, as well as three hours of online driver training annually. The First Responders are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Rarity Bay First Responders are Chief Jeff Koup, Assistant Chief Jim Post, Gail Bernstein, Judy Sikula Carter, Gary Cole, David Foote, Bob Lemanski, Bobbie Polacsek, John Porter, Ray Wallace, and Linda Wiese. They are supported by a board of seven, which includes Chair Rick Wills, Vice Chair Mary VanHyning, Treasurer Pat Murphy, Secretary Linda Riley, Chuck Brummund, Mary Lou Foster, and Cathy Filosi. The board’s job is to manage organizational and financial support, which allows the First Responders to focus on their medical duties. The Rarity Bay First Responders were formed in 2006 by a small group of residents who were interested in having volunteers help out in medical emergencies until the EMS arrived on the scene. It is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations made to the First Responders are charitable donations.

ith whimsical lyrics and a solid musical grounding in Americana tradition, David Mayfield and Abby Rose are taking advantage of their combined songwriting skills and tight harmonies to propel their new duo group, Cave Twins, into the Indie music spotlight. Each artist has seen success separate from their new pairing – as solo acts, within other groups, and behind the scenes in the producer’s chair. The deadline for entry is Monday, April 1. The goal of this show is to promote art by local high school students and to provide an opportunity to participate in an open art exhibit. In the spirit of preparing young artists for further exhibition opportunities, AACA has changed the entry process. Student artists should enter their own work for the 2019 show. During the past 10 years, Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 98,000 bouquets of re-purposed flowers to individuals in healthcare facilities here in the Greater Knoxville area. have often heard it said that the baby boomer generation had the greatest music. I happen to agree wholeheartedly. One of the reasons I feel that way is because of the iconic work by the legendary Graham Nash – whether it was his work during his time with The Hollies or the prolific period with Crosby, Still, Nash (and sometimes Young), or in his various solo pursuits. Because Nash was, once again, going to be performing in East Tennessee (this time at Chattanooga’s Walker Theater), I was granted the opportunity to chat with the musical icon about his latest album, Over the Years, and the supporting tour. When I mentioned that he was going to be playing in Chattanooga (easy driving distance from me) and that I met with him during his show in Knoxville (even closer to me), he interjected with this neat bit of news: “You know, in Knoxville, I was approached by the City Council just very quickly. The idea was that the Everly Brothers spent the first eight years of their life in Knoxville. They were on their parents’ radio show in Knoxville. So the Knoxville City Council approached me and said that they’re going to make a small park in honor of the Everly Brothers. Part of their design is that on the walk through the park, there are marble stones on the floor that are carved with quotes from quite famous people about the Everly Brothers. They wanted to know if I could help find people that would give a small quote and get permission to put their signature carved into the marble. So far I have me, of course. I have Keith Richards. I have McCartney. I have Paul Simon, Art Garfunkel, Brian Wilson. Incredible stuff, you know? I just thought I’d tell you that because you’re familiar with Knoxville. How could I not be involved when it’s the Everly Brothers? They’re part of the reason we are talking right now!” The new album, Over the Years, is a fantastic, musthave collection of some of Nash’s work. I asked him to tell me about the album.

“I realized a year ago that there’d never been a Greatest Hits of my music,” he said. “Yes, Greatest Hits of CSN. Greatest Hits of CSNY. Greatest Hits of the Hollies, etc. But not of me, personally. So I went on the internet and found out what my friends’ 15 most favorite songs of mine are, and I put them on. And then I thought, ‘You know, people have probably bought all this music – maybe even several times. How could I make it more interesting and more desirable?’ So I decided that I would go into my archives and find the demos of those songs and put them on. That’s what it became. The artwork was done by my wife, Amy Grantham.” Over the Years is a two-disc collection that includes original demos of some of Nash’s biggest hits. I asked him which song he would point to as a calling card for the collection. “It would be ‘Marrakesh Express’ because that was the demo that I sent The Hollies, and they made a very half-hearted attempt to record it,” he said. “To me, in my mind and being the writer of that song, I needed the energy of a moving train through it, which Stephen Stills brilliantly did on the CSN version of Marrakesh. I think if people hear the original demo, they’ll realize a couple of things. One is that the arrangement of the song didn’t change that much from my demos. I notice that the arrangement of each was already complete in my mind

when I made the demo. ‘Teach Your Children,’ of course, is another one. I started that song in the north of England, and I finished it in Los Angeles in early ’69. But you can hear that the arrangement – apart from the fact that there’s a solo in there that was done, of course, by Jerry Garcia – is pretty much the same as my demo.” Graham Nash is touring this year, and East Tennessee is privileged to have one of the tour stops being in Chattanooga. lues and rock have been losing some of the foundational artists of the genre. Greats like B.B. King and Johnny Winter left us far too soon. However, we still have many blues greats touring and putting out great blues. One such artist is someone we’ve had the privilege of chatting with a couple of times before: Walter Trout. Trout has a new CD out entitled Survivor Blues and will be hitting the road in support of that album. It was about the disc that I called him up at his home. It had been four years since we last spoke, so I asked what has been happening since our last chat. “I’m doing great, man! I’m feelin’ great! I’m very, very – almost shocked to be still alive. I had the transplant four years ago, and this is the fourth record I’ll be putting out since the transplant. I just feel lucky and blessed and grateful, and it’s an all-new thing to be alive after what I went through.” Trout was in the area last year for an intimate show in Maryville that was put on by a local blues organization of sorts. I asked him why he doesn’t hit the region more often. “I don’t know,” he said. “I’m really busy playing all across the world, but I am getting back to Tennessee. I don’t know if it’s near you, but I’m playing in Pelham at The Caverns – in the cave there – I think maybe in April. I’m going to double-bill with Eric Gales. “Let me tell you a story. My high school girlfriend, who I was deeply in love with after she graduated from high school in South Jersey, went to Maryville College to study piano. In 1970, I used to hitchhike down there

from South Jersey, and I used to stay with her in the girl’s dorm. They used to sneak me in, and I literally – literally – would climb the ivy and sneak in the window. So I have a lot of history in Maryville. I know it well. I spent a lot of time there with my girlfriend.” Turning to his new CD, I asked him for his “elevator speech” about it. “The short version is that all my life, I have thought there are all these amazing blues songs that have fallen by the wayside. When people decide they’re going to do albums of blues covers or they’re going to play covers when they’re playing love, they come out and do ‘I Got My Mojo Working’ or they do ‘Stormy Monday’ or they do ‘Caledonia’ or ‘Hey Hey The Blues Is Alright’ and ‘Missing With the Kid’ – all these songs that have been covered 853,000 times, you know? And I’m like ‘Wait a minute, here. There’s this vast catalog of these incredible songs that are just kind of forgotten.’” Trout recorded at the studio owned and operated by the Doors’ Robbie Krieger. He shared how and why that came about. “This is the first time I’ve worked with him,” he said. “The way that this happened is that my producer, Eric Corne – this is our 12th or 13th album together, we’re kind of a team – he came and he said, ‘You know, Robbie Krieger’s got this studio. It’s kind of a private studio across town, but it’s awesome. Let’s go over and see it.’

We went over and the place is beautiful. “So we started recording there and Robbie, who loves blues – that’s his main love in life is the blues – was coming in and hanging out. He’d be listening to playbacks. He’d be having meals with us. We’d be playing back – listening to a playback. He’d be sitting on a couch, with an acoustic guitar, playing along. One day I said, ‘Hey man! Let’s do something together!’ He’s like, ‘Yeah! That’d be great!’” When I asked Trout if there is a track that he would point to as a calling card for the whole album, he shared: “The cut that I think is the ultimate statement on that album is the opener, ‘Me, My Guitar, and the Blues’ by Jimmy Dawkins. When I heard that, I was completely devastated. I thought to myself, ‘This song that this guy wrote – which has basically been forgotten and unheard – is as good a blues song as anyone has ever written. This is classic. He basically took the entire genre of the blues and summed up the whole thing in two lines: ‘And now that you don’t love me, all I have left is me, my guitar, and the blues.’” Keep up with the latest about Walter Trout at www. Life is Going to Throw You a Curve Ball: Will You Be Ready?

f there’s one thing I’ve learned from my financial planning clients, it’s that life doesn’t always turn out like we think. We get laid off five years from retirement, or our beloved wife is diagnosed with dementia, or our strong husband dies before he turns 60, or the markets drop 40% the year after our parents retire and their plans of travel and relaxation are forever replaced with worry and penny-pinching. As a financial planner, I am a teacher and a student. I observe and study and learn how my most successful clients think and act. I don’t define success by how much money they have; I define success by how confident they are in their unknown future. They are confident because they don’t guess; they plan for the curve balls, and you can, too. » Have enough life insurance to make sure your family can maintain their lifestyle and pay for college if the primary income earner dies. My office manager’s 42-year-old friend just died in an accident, leaving behind a wife and a seven year old who needs a heart transplant. » Have a plan if the primary breadwinner in your family is disabled before he/she retires. Review your employer’s disability insurance. If you’re self-employed, buy your own policy.

Set up an auto draft and save monthly no matter how big or small. » A 2013 DHHS survey found that 37% of people thought they would need long-term care, yet more than 70% of people actually do need it (defined as home health, assisted living, or full-skilled care). I’ve helped a wife complete paperwork to receive the LTC insurance benefits for her husband’s Alzheimer’s care, and I’ve helped a wife with no LTC decide which assets to sell to pay for her husband’s care. The first conversation was easier.

he NAIA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships will find a new home in Tennessee as Visit Knoxville Sports Commission will be the new host for the 2020 and 2021 events at the Allan Jones Aquatics Center. In the 63 years of men’s and 39 years of women’s swimming and diving championship, the championships have never been hosted in Tennessee. These championships will be the 8th and 9th championships that have been held in the Volunteer State. Previous championships include baseball (1979-1980), DI women’s basketball (1991-2011), football (1986, 1989, 1996-2007), women’s golf (2011-2012), men’s and women’s indoor track & field (2001-2010, 2016-2017), and women’s volleyball (1994). “The NAIA is excited to partner with Visit Knoxville Sports Commission,” said Jim Carr, NAIA President and CEO. “The Allan Jones Aquatics Center will raise the competition experience throughout the championships.” The Allan Jones Aquatics Center was completed in 2008. The facility holds a capacity of 1,284 fans, and the deck area will accommodate up to 2,000 additional individuals, teams, and other personnel. The building features a full-size 50-meter competition pool, a separate competition diving well, a strength training center, sports medicine facility, and a high-tech timing room. “This is going to be an incredible event for Knoxville,” said Chad Culver, Senior Director of the Visit Knoxville Sports Commission. “We are very excited to host this NAIA National Championship at Allan Jones Aquatic Center. We look forward to showing the athletes, coaches, and fans a great experience in Knoxville.” Currently 29 NAIA institutions sponsor men’s swimming and diving and 36 NAIA institutions sponsor women’s swimming and diving. hat special room. For some it’s a wine cellar where friends can gather in the home and sip a favorite vintage. Some enjoy their theatre room where current features are viewed in a private setting. But if caring about appearance and wanting a retreat for dressing is your idea of luxury, it’s more easily attained than you may think. Look around your home for that room or space that is not being used to its potential. Being adjacent to the master bedroom is not a necessity. In New York, an organizing client designed her dream home with the master on main floor, but her dressing

room was in the basement. With a small closet in the master suite just for necessities, a large dressing room was down the steps next to the larder for dressing for day or evening events. When asked about the convenience of the main closet so far away from the bedroom, it was shared how nice it was to be away for the distraction of other household activities. This was her private sanctuary with a large island for drawers, and glass door cabinets held hanging garments. Shoes were displayed on pull-out shelves, and the room included a comfortable chair.

A Closer to home in Knoxville, we have taken rooms no longer needed for grown children and made them a place to house clients’ collections of couture. In one, a large sitting room – that was never used – was claimed for a dream closet, which then allowed the old master to become the husband’s. rchie is a small (about 20 pounds) mixed black and white border collie who will steal your heart. He is very shy and quiet but loves to cuddle and be held. He is hesitant when someone approaches, but as soon as he realizes you are friendly, he smiles and hopes for a treat. (Hot dogs are his favorite!) Archie came to the shelter as a stray but appears Archie to be housebroken. He is curious to explore when he is out on a leash but is easily scared and needs a patient understanding family who will let him get comfortable and feel secure in his new home. She is an indoor only, sweet little Tuxedo who came in with her three kittens and is now done nursing them. She is VERY social and outgoing, a roly-poly bundle of affection, and will adjust well to a household that will adore her-as she deserves. Brazil is a six-month-old boy with very unique markings. He is a brown tabby with striped legs, but his body has the ticked fur like an Abyssinian and a very distinct M of his forehead telling us that he proud to be a Tabby! He is the “full package” of purrsonality, and just like Tina – an indoor only cat, outgoing, cuddly, and he loves people. He would be the perfect addition to any home! Please come by the shelter to meet all available cats. We even have kittens ready now and some that will be ready in the coming weeks. All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. There is a $40 adoption fee over 2 years old, $50 under 2 years old. Cats are notorious for their appreciation of the finer lounging places in life, but despite their reputation for snoozing, they also enjoy the opportunity to stretch their legs and get some exercise on a daily basis. Fortunately, for cat owners, exercising a cat doesn’t take much time or energy. It’s estimated that between 25-40% of cats seen by veterinarians in the U.S. are overweight, with many being obese. Obesity is also associated with several medical problems, including increased chance of arthritis, ligament damage, diabetes mellitus, breathing difficulties, liver problems, surgical risk, and urinary tract disease. Although reducing food intake (ask your vet about the safest way to do this) is the number-one way to combat obesity, increasing exercise is also helpful and should be part of every cat’s daily routine. Exercise is important for your cat not only to keep him fit and trim, but also because he needs mental stimulation. Single cats (especially young cats) that are left alone all day with nothing to do can create their own games, which may not be healthy for your household belongings. March in the Garden

eware the trickery of March! This is the monthly article where I warn you not to go crazy and start planting all sorts of things in your yard. We will have warm, balmy days where the sun will try to fool us into believing that spring is here. Don’t believe it! If you remember (and lived here then), last April we had a hard freeze mid-month. There are several things that you can do in your yard and some things that you can plant, but don’t jump the gun! Our average last frost is mid-April, but there was thunder in February. Old timers will tell you that means a frost in May. Here are some things that you can do now: » Row, row, row your boat, gently across your yard! Yep, this has been a very wet winter, and some of you have bogs. Your main task will, therefore, be monitoring your yard for signs of trouble. The ground is extremely saturated and soft, so keep an eye on those big trees. Spring storms can bring them down. You will also need to monitor plants for signs of fungal diseases and root rot. While you are out there, go ahead and look for insects and make note of any pruning, moving, and replacing that needs to be done. If you have questions, please give us a call, send me an email, or stop by with samples of damaged plants. » Clean up, clean up, everybody everywhere! Did your kids watch Barney the Dinosaur? If so, you sang that line (just like you did the “row” line in the first paragraph). Anyway, the first and most important spring chore is a good cleanup. Get plant debris out of the beds and see how badly the weeds have taken over. Cut perennials back to where new growth is emerging. Don’t cut the tops off the baby plants though, because that doesn’t re-grow! » Pull those weeds out and treat the beds with Preen or another pre-emergent to keep

them from coming back. Aggressive weeds like privet will need to be treated with an herbicide if they are too big to pull. » Get those beds ready for plants by upping their nutrient levels. Work some good compost into the soil so it can be breaking down while you wait on warmer weather. » If you mulched last fall, take a rake and fluff up the mulch. It can become very hard and compacted during the winter. If you didn’t, a fresh layer will protect the plants from the freeze/thaw cycles and keep moisture stable. Do NOT use too much! Three inches is optimal. NEVER pile the mulch around the base of plants or create volcanoes around trees. » I told you there are things that you can plant, so let’s cover those. You can plant trees, shrubs, and cool season annuals, perennials, and vegetables. (Nowhere in that sentence is the word “tomato!”) I realize that some of you have no idea what plants are considered “cool season,” so here is a partial list: Annuals: Pansies and violas, snapdragons, sweet peas, nasturtiums Perennials: Dianthus, Lenten Roses, Candytuft, Phlox Vegetables: Greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, early potatoes, radishes, Swiss chard, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts Herbs: Rosemary, Lavender, Thyme » There is a troublesome word that begins with P. It is pruning. Some of you do what looks more like butchering. Worse, some of you pay someone to butcher your plants! We have a pruning workshop on March the 9th at 10 am. Please come or at least look online before you start whacking away like you are trying to escape the jungles of Africa. » March is a good time to get your containers ready for the spring. If the soil has

here are very few days that I would describe as dull or boring at Premiere Consignment in nearby Tellico Village. The vast variety of household items that we accept for consignment, combined with the personalities and stories of both our consignors and customers, provide an endless source of fascinating anecdotes. When you consider that the items we sell were acquired from throughout North America and occasionally from around the world as our consignors pursued their individual careers, and that many of the items we re-sell include antiques, as well as items that have been in some families for many generations, shopping at Premiere Consignment can be an adventure in itself. Retirees converge on the Tellico Lake area from all around the globe, bringing with them possessions they have acquired through-

been in there more than a couple of years, you need to dump it out and replace it with a good quality potting soil. Wash the pots out and rinse them with a mild bleach solution if you had fungal problems. If your containers are large or if there are trees, shrubs, or perennials planted in them, you can top dress with compost instead of replacing everything. If you do seasonal planting, replace the top 6”-12” with fresh soil. If you have had problems with fungus or insects, however, you may want to start all over. Both can hide out in your soil and re-infect new plants. » Let’s talk a little about the birds and the bees. They need our help! Please include

plants for them when you plan your garden. It is also good to add houses, baths, and feeders. A feeder will double the number of birds in your yard, and a water source will double it again. In addition, be very careful about chemicals that you use. If the pollinators die, we die. That’s all for this month. We are getting shipments in on a daily basis right now, so stop in and see what’s new!

array of choices available, it’s easy to find a hellebore you will like. When purchasing a hellebore, the best way to ensure you are getting what you want is to buy it in bloom. February into April is be the ideal time to shop your local garden centers and nurseries when they are stocked with a variety of selections in bloom. Hellebores are easy to grow if you provide organically rich soil and a part-shade location. Although plants need to be kept slightly moist when they are becoming established, they become relatively drought-tolerant with age. Plants tend to clump about two feet wide and two feet tall. Some hellebore will rapidly self-sow around the garden, and since many are now hybrids, you never know what color of bloom will result. The leathery foliage of hellebore looks best when sheared in late fall just before flowers and new growth emerge. Because they flower when the weather is cool, they have an exceptionally long bloom time, often flowering from January to May. Most selections are cold hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 5 (-20 degrees F) and are resistant to both deer and voles. Hellebores are the perfect winter-flowering perennial for the woodland shade garden. They combine wonderfully well with flowering bulbs such as daffodils and snowdrops, as well as other shade-lov-

ing perennials like ferns, heuchera, foam flower, hosta, woodland phlox, and lungwort. They lend themselves well to being planted in the foreground of a garden and look great in a woodland setting when tucked in next to natural elements such as stone, stumps, and logs. If you have a slope, planting hellebores on a hillside allows you to see into the blooms on selections that have nodding flowers. You can find numerous selections of Helleborous hybrids growing in all three UT Gardens locations across the state (Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson). Selections known to perform well, as reported by numerous horticulturists throughout Tennessee, include ‘Joseph Lemper,’ ‘Penny’s Pink,’ ‘Sparkling Diamonds,’ and ‘Golden Sunrise.’ The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Hellebore By Derrick Stowell, Education Administrator, and Susan Hamilton, Director of UT Gardens

ne plant sure to brighten the winter landscape is hellebore, as it is commonly known. Botanically it is known as Helleborus. You may also know it as Christmas rose or Lenten rose because of its rose-like flowers that are in bloom during winter and early spring around the Christian observance of Lent. The genus name Helleborus originates from the Greek words helein, which means to injure, and bora, which means food. Put together, these Greek words indicate that the plant is bitter and toxic to eat. There are about 15 species of hellebore, and all have some ornamental value. The most popular are the Oriental hybrid hellebores (Helleborus x hybridus cvs.). Recent breeding and hybridizing have expanded the palette of hellebore, and unique flower and foliage forms and textures have resulted in reviving interest in this woodland perennial. We now have incredible selections with improved characteristics such as new flower colors, double flowers, variegated

foliage, and flowers that stand erect rather than nodding. Some of the most exciting trends include truer and more unusual colors from amber to almost black, increased plant heights, and outward-facing blooms. Gardeners are not limited, however, to a rainbow of solid-color flowers. Hellebores can also have beautiful picotee edges (edges that are a different color than the rest of the flower) or veining to adorn the outside of the bloom. Inside the bloom, they can have spotting or a dark center that draws your eye into the flower. The varied hybrid offerings extend to the shape of the flowers as well. In addition to single, double, and star-shaped flowers, hellebores can have an anemone-flowered form, which looks like something between a single and a double. With the dizzying

This powerful, tuneful drama about a family caught in an explosive moment in American history contains adult language and themes that make it most appropriate for patrons 16 years and older. Chelle and her brother, Lank, are running an unlicensed after-hours bar in their Detroit basement – risky business – especially during a brutal police crackdown that has set off riots throughout the city.
