Expanding horizons
Being away from home means your child leaves their comfort zone. Sharing space with kids they’ve never met, from different backgrounds, states, or countries, is also a completely new experience. Unplugging from technology
Sometimes it seems like technology and social media have taken over, especially for young people. Giving up technology for weeks may seem impossible, but the results are astonishing. A decrease in anxiety and an increase in happiness are noticeable in most campers when they unplug. In the ACA research, teens and children who unplugged reported learning how to live in the moment. They stopped worrying about the past or future, instead focusing on their present experiences. Putting down technology means learning to look other people in the eye. They develop better social skills while reading each other’s non-verbal cues, like facial expressions and body language. Face-to-face interaction is the only way to develop those skills.
Lifelong friendships
Kids at sleepaway camp bond with other campers in a deep, lasting way. Sharing the camp experience creates a sense of community, fostering lifelong friendships. In the ACA research, children and teens said making new friends was the best part of camp. They - and their parents - said social skills learned from camp helped them develop friendships at school, long after camp ended. Annual Arts Gala in Athens on March 7th
T
he annual Arts Gala, Athens Area Council for the Arts’ most significant fundraiser, is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at The Arts Center in downtown Athens. The event is a 40th Birthday Party theme and celebrates and supports the arts in our area. The hours for the event are 6:30 to 11 pm, and dressing in finest attire for the period of your choice from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s is suggested. Tickets are $75 per person, and advanced reservations are required. Arts Gala 2020 promises a variety of experiences throughout the event. The evening begins with the opening of the silent auction, cash bar, and hors d’oeuvres. Live music is the soundtrack during cocktail hour as guests peruse auction items donated by area artists, individuals, and businesses. Before the buffet catered by Michael’s, there is a live auction of larger items ranging from original art to travel. Then soul party band Jason Eskridge & Friends continue playing, bringing guests to the dance floor until 11 pm. Proceeds from The Arts Gala are earmarked to support school and community arts education. AACA has been a vital presence in McMinn County since 1979, presenting thousands of performances, exhibitions, artist residencies,
art classes, and more by international, regional, and local artists of all types and genres. It has created and sustained many arts groups throughout the years, including the Athens Community Theatre, the Athens Area Children’s Choir, the Unity Gospel Choir, and has contributed technical assistance to many more groups and individuals. TWU Dental Hygiene Program Moves to Athens
T
ennessee Wesleyan’s Dental Hygiene Clinic has successfully moved from Madisonville to Athens and is now serving the community. According to Dental Hygiene Program Director Randa Colbert, the number one mission of the clinic to deliver oral care service whether patients have insurance or not. The new facility, which is located at the former McSpadden Furniture building on White Street, has all-new equipment. Services include cleaning, x-rays, fluoride, and sealants. The TWU Dental Hygiene program is fully accredited through Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association. “The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program fits with the mission and vision of TWU to serve the region by providing relevant programs of study in allied health,” said TWU VP of Academic Affairs, Dr. Grant Willhite, of the program’s academic strength. “The TWU Dental Hygiene program is very similar in structure to the TWU-Fort Sanders Nursing program that continues to set the standard of excellence in the Knoxville area for undergraduate nursing preparation. We anticipate that the TWU Dental Hygiene program will likewise set the standard of excellence in the region for dental hygienists.” Tennessee Wesleyan acquired the dental hygiene program after Hiwassee College closed its doors last year. After the college’s closure, Hiwassee’s Board of Trustees met on May 2, 2019, to determine the fate of the program and chose the fellow Methodist-affiliated institution to continue dental hygiene. f you are like me, you probably are excited at the prospect of spring especially after this challenging wet winter season. Temperatures are now on the rise and although there might be a cold snap on occasion, I know it is short lived as spring pushes through. During the colder days that keep us indoors, a type of “cabin fever” sets in which makes it undesirable to venture out. But warmer days invite us to get outdoors and enjoy the area such as hiking in the mountains; cleaning up the winter debris in the yard; shopping the area’s boutiques; attending area events such as musicals, theatre presentations and workshops and lectures; and enhancing our interior and exterior living spaces. In this March edition we have included a variety of products and services for the home and garden that will help to eliminate those spring chores on your list. Check out all that we have to offer. Blount County Public Library Hosts Steve Ross and Dana Jester, Artists Featured in the “Joy of Painting”

he Blount County Public Library is excited to host and welcome Steve Ross and Dana Jester. Steve is the son of the artist Bob Ross and has been seen with Dana Jester on the well-known “Joy of Painting.” Ari Baker, Education Services Manager, is excited to welcome the pair to the library. “Some of the library’s favorite programs start from serendipitous connections that lead to unique opportunities for our community members - whether that’s robotics, or woodworking, or bluegrass, or quilting, or painting happy little trees!” said Baker. “We love that people think of BCPL when they want to share their skills with our community.” On Thursday, March 5, at 6:30 pm, Mr. Ross and Mr. Jester will be giving a seated lecture that is free and open to the public. Mr. Ross will hold a painting demo while he speaks about his life as an artist, working with his father, and will take questions from the audience. Although there is ample seating in the Main Gallery, the library asks that patrons prepare for a crowded evening and plan accordingly. In addition to the public program, Mr. Ross and Mr. Jester will be facilitating four separate workshops on
March 4-7. These classes will be $125 per day, and each day will be an individual painting class from 9 am to 4 pm with a lunch break. Participants must provide their own supplies, and there is an age limit of age 16 or older. Dana Jester will be teaching the Wednesday and Friday class, and Steve Ross will be teaching the Thursday and Saturday class. Seats are limited and filling quickly. Signsups can only be done through this email. “One of the most exciting parts of coordinating this experience has been being able to bring a program to the public that is accessible and may be a once in a lifetime experience,” said Janna Federer, Public Events Coordinator at the library. “We’re expecting a large crowd on Thursday night and hope that patrons of all ages and backgrounds can come out and learn from Mr. Ross as he spends time with members of our community.” Open to the public, this program is hosted by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. everend Ross Licata is the Chaplain for American Legion Post 256, Tellico Lake in Vonore, TN, and a resident of Madisonville, TN. Prior to moving to Madisonville in 2011, he had become an ordained minister and in 1997 became the Chaplain to American Legion Post 151 in New York. Recently Reverend Licata was approached by Tennessee’s American Legion District 2 Commander, Hugh Turpin, to be the District 2 Chaplain, covering 10 counties and as

many Post Chaplains. Supported by his wife, Cheryl, Reverend Licata, at age 76, continues to be very active by also serving his local spiritual sector, performing services at funerals, meetings, and church events. As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, Reverend Ross Licata says, “Yes, I’m very busy with the American Legion and with my local community, but I don’t want to slow down; I want to continue to serve ‘For God and Country.’” American Legion Post 256 extends an invitation to all veterans to join us for our meetings on the first Thursday of each month at Little Italy of Tellico Village. Tellico Village VFW Presents Awards to Three Teacher of the Year Regional Winners
ll three school teacher categories (elementary, middle, and high school) were selected as regional winners in this year’s Teacher of the Year awards. The three teachers all teach in the Lenoir City school district and were represented by Tellico Village VFW for nomination. Winners receive a framed certificate, a crystal apple plaque, and a monetary gift as recognition to their achievement. Commander Tony Newton and Al Porell presented the awards to teachers Felicia Breedlove (Lenoir City Elementary), Douglas Arnie Gross (Lenoir City Middle School), and Mary Webster (Lenoir City High School). These three exceptional teachers were recognized for their outstanding commitment towards teaching Americanism and patriotism in their classrooms. eterans of American Legion Post 256 received an informative and enlightening briefing from Dean B. Borsos, Director of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN. Mr. Borsos is also an Air Force veteran who served as the Commander of the Air Force Medical Support Agency. As a guest speaker for the members of Post 256, he described how the center is known as a highly specialized care facility with state-of-art technology. uch has been said in this column about how to handle visits to your salon, but until now, nothing has been discussed concerning how to “exit” your salon if there are irreconcilable differences. While there are very few instances that cannot be resolved with proper communication and a little hard work, there are times you can become the recipient of one or more undesirable results and decide to try a new provider. The first Exit Strategy is when you simply leave the salon and do not return. Many times guests of a salon will
leave, never to return without having had a constructive conversation about their visit with either their provider or the manager of the salon. It is very difficult to provide satisfaction to our guests under this Exit Strategy, and it is best to pursue a better solution that will lead you to a desirable result. Also, leaving a salon without ever making anyone aware of your unpleasant visit is the best way to make sure you are never satisfied at that particular salon. Another Exit Strategy is when a guest chooses to leave their current provider for another within the same salon.

noxville’s internationally acclaimed Big Ears Festival is only a few weeks away, opening Thursday, March 26, and running through Sunday, March 29. Both the Bijou Theatre and Tennessee Theatre are proud to be some of the featured venues and look forward to hosting many of the festival’s most compelling performances.

Led Zeppelin bassist and keyboard player John Paul Jones will offer two extremely rare performances during Big Ears. Always a musical adventurer, Jones’ post-Zeppelin work encompasses rock, opera, folk, bluegrass, and a number of forays into the avant-garde. On Friday, March 27, he’ll introduce audiences to his duo, Sons of Chipotle, with Finnish cellist Annsi Kartunnen. On March 28, he’ll perform a rare solo concert employing piano, mandolin, and electronics - an extended improvisatory reverie from one of the most iconic musicians of his generation. On Saturday, March 28, the enigmatic Annette Peacock will make a very rare live appearance at Big Ears. In the 1960s, Peacock made her mark with a songbook of mysterious jazz tunes; in the 1970s, David Bowie signed her to his new label. In the intervening decades, Peacock has continued making groundbreaking excursions into punk, new wave, and chamber music. The New York Times called her “the most remarkable - and mercurial living singer and composer you’ve almost certainly never heard.” A pair of celebrated and groundbreaking young female composers will present new work at the Bijou. North Carolina-born singer, composer, and violinist Caroline Shaw - 2013 Pulitzer Prize and 2019 Grammy Award winner - will present a new collaboration with Sō Percussion on Saturday, March 28. Nathalie Joachim, a singer, composer, and flutist, offers her collaboration with the Spektral Quartet on Friday, March 27. They’ll showcase music from the Grammy-nominated album Femn d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti), a homage to Joachim’s Haitian heritage.

With the pass, children born in 2015 or 2016 are able to visit Dollywood absolutely free for the entire 2020 season. Additionally, the pass allows children to splash and play for free during Dollywood’s Splash Country’s 20th anniversary season. With high demand for the free pass, Dollywood officials have extended the deadline for children to be registered. ennessee softball will host the 2020 USA Softball Women’s National Team in an exhibition game on April 8 at 7 pm at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium as a part of Team USA’s “Stand Beside Her” Tour. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. Fans will have an opportunity to see the Lady Vols take on Team USA as the Red, White, and Blue’s Olympic squad prepares for Tokyo 2020. Spectators will also have a chance to welcome back legendary Lady Vol Monica Abbott (2004-07), who holds the NCAA record in career strikeouts (2,440), innings pitched (1,448.0), victories (189), and starts (206). he Tellico Village Community Church Crafters will be holding their spring craft and bake sale on Saturday, April 4, from 9 am until noon in the Christian Life Center of the Church, which is located at 130 Chota Center in Tellico Village. Items for sale include a wide variety of floral arrangements, including wreaths, table arrangements, and other silk floral displays. If you need a decorative cover for your mailbox, the Crafters have a wide range of seasonal covers that are available either at the sale or by special order. The many talented sewers and knitters create a host of home décor products for sale, including the ever popular “scrubbies,” golf seat covers, baby quilts, table runners, placemats, knitted items, and dolls, just to name a few. Paper goods, such as note cards and envelopes, bridge tallies, etc., are also available for purchase at the sale. The jewelry makers always have a group of shoppers lined up who are looking for something original for themselves or for friends and family. Be sure to arrive early to get the best selection of homemade baked goods. They go fast, and some items can be frozen and used at Easter. Another favorite at the bake sale is the ever popular “Jezebel” Sauce. Women from all across Tellico Village and beyond work with the Crafters. You don’t have to be a member of the church to participate. Whatever the skill level, there is always a place for newcomers. Crafters meet most Mondays from 9:30 to 11:30 am in the Christian Life Center of the Church. All proceeds from the craft sales benefit local organizations and charities. Last year $26,400 was donated to the community. So come and find some treasures and contribute to your community at the same time. Bring your cash or a check since credit cards are not accepted.

ost of us are familiar with the Lutheran Church that shares space with Click Funeral Home, but some major changes are happening. To accommodate our growing congregation, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church purchased the building housing Click Funeral Home in 2019. That business will remain, but Edward Jones and Physicians Hearing Care are in the process of moving to new locations. An extensive redesign of the exterior to allow the building to look and function as a church is underway. To provide for current and future growth, we needed to expand our worship, fellowship area, and offices. We are now in the process of starting the interior Phase 1: » The bathrooms are being enlarged, and a family restroom is being added. » The church offices are being moved to the other end of the building, allowing us to substantially enlarge our fellowship space. As development continues, we will share the continuing progress being made by our expansion team, architect, and contractors. We look forward the enhancement of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church to serve our parishioners and the community as we live out our mission of sharing God’s love with the world. n the history of Contemporary Christian Music, one of the patriarchs of the genre is a man who played with some of its early trailblazers. That man is the world-renowned guitarist, Phil Keaggy. Keaggy has been active in Christian music since his conversion in 1970, blowing people’s minds with his amazing guitar wizardry that has earned him much respect from within CCM and many accolades from outside the genre as well. In a recent extensive interview, Keaggy shared openly about his career in and out of the CCM industry, the challenges he and his wife had with suffering the pain of multiple miscarriages, his prolific production of work, both solo as well as collaboratively, and who he’s been able to meet and play with. Pil Keaggy About his solo work and how it’s “getting out there,” Keaggy shared: “I’ve been an Indie artist now for about 18 years, since the last record label I belonged to was Word Records. They let me go in 2002, and since then, everything I’ve been putting out has been just Indie. That means no marketing or distribution. Very little radio. But I keep working, because that’s my job, and I still do concerts because a number of people still like to hear me play and sing and do my songs. So the thing is, I keep creating, and I’ve been doing a lot of collaboration, especially during the last, I’ll say 10, 12 years with other writers and artists/musicians.” Then, turning a little more serious, Keaggy shared some of his feelings about the CCM industry. “The industry has changed,” he said. “We don’t have CD stores like we used to. We don’t have record stores except for Bernadette & Phil’s specialty shops, you could say, where you can find LPs. So Wedding Day when I do concerts, I make my music available to people at the concerts.” In addition to his amazing catalog of work that is still growing, Keaggy has played with various names outside of CCM. He humbly talked about them when asked. “I’ll be 69 in March, and I’ve had great opportunities during my lifetime to play with people I really admire. Say, for instance, Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta. Those two guys - to be on the same album with guys that played with Peter Gabriel and McCartney and Lennon and all these all these amazing musicians and all these amazing artists. “I did get a chance to play at Linda McCartney sister’s wedding back in 1990. ach Lenten season local churches work together to assist the residents of Monroe County that are less fortunate or are facing a crisis. Each Wednesday during Lent our local faith community will gather at area churches at noon for a soup and sandwich lunch provided by the host church, a short devotion by the host pastor, and an offering will be collected to benefit the Good Shepherd Center. raditional bluegrass music will fill the air in downtown Etowah, Tennessee, as the Etowah Arts Commission (EAC) presents the 26th annual Cousin Jake Tullock Memorial Bluegrass Festival on Saturday, March 7, at the historic Gem Theater, located at 700 Tennessee Avenue. Local favorites Just Us serve as the host band to welcome Valley Grass Express and Sierra Hull & Justin Moses to the stage. A reunion set by Hiwassee Ridge will also take place. Join us on Friday night, March 6, for the annual John Studdard Memorial Bluegrass Gospel Concert featuring Just Us and Alan Bibey & Grasstowne. The Bluegrass Festival honors “Cousin Jake” Tullock, who grew up in Etowah and was a long-time member of Flatt and Scruggs renowned Foggy Mountain Boys during their heyday in the 1960s and 1970s. The Gospel Concert honors local educator, bluegrass musician, and founder of the Cousin Jake Bluegrass Festival, John Studdard. “Consumer Choice” or “Consumer Beware?”
T
here is a movement across the country to reduce the number of regulations imposed on consumers, including the licensing and regulation of professional licenses. It is being promoted as a reduction or elimination of “barriers to enter a profession.” Most of the legislation introduced across the country would allow a consumer to make the choice of using a licensed or unlicensed professional. They generally require the consumer to sign an acknowledgement that the person is not licensed to perform those services and the consumer accepts any risk. Two bills recently introduced in Tennessee, HB1945 and SB1914, would allow unlicensed workers in certain fields to do business without a license as long as the consumer knows and acknowledges that fact. The lists of professions include accountants, architects, engineers, barbers, cosmetologists, funeral directors and embalmers, contractors, home inspectors, plumbers, land surveyors, real estate brokers, private investigators, those engaged
in the application of pesticides, tattoo artist, body piercing artist, alarm contractors and fire extinguisher and fire protection sprinkler systems. Other bills introduced across the country are similar and some include lawyers and doctors.
But should every licensed profession be allowed to be performed by unlicensed individuals?
Responsible professional licensing ensures a minimum level of qualifications and is critical in professions that have a high impact on public health safety and welfare – professions such as architecture, professional surveying and engineering, landscape architecture, and public accounting. The risk of this decision reaches far beyond the person who accepts this risk, it reaches to every person who drives across that bridge. A distinction should be acknowledged that it is not a one size fits all. Some consumer choices only impact the individual consumer, others impact the public as a whole. Consumer Choice or Consumer Beware?
Professional licensing protects consumers and the public: Consumer Beware puts them at risk.
Professional licensing is an important indicator of a baseline level of expertise and qualification that helps protect the public from unqualified practitioners. Professional licensing as an indicator of qualification is particularly critical in highly complex, technical professions for which lay people do not have the specialized knowledge needed to evaluate qualifications and performance. Professional licensing boards play a critical role in ensuring and enforcing qualifications that protect the public. Proposals to eliminate licensing would shift the burden of ensuring qualifications from experts to the public and exposes the public to greater risk from unqualified

The Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir

he beauty and versatility of Tellico Lake and the reservoir from Chilhowee Dam to Tellico Dam in Lenoir City is important to us all. The Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) is a not-forprofit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of this body of water and the streams and rivers that feed into it. WATeR recognizes that growth of algae causing a “greening” effect in the reservoir is a present threat to water quality because algae can lead to the development of slime and the growth of unwanted plants at the shoreline. Clean water is important to those who swim and fish in the reservoir and esthetically pleasing to recreational visitors who spend millions of dollars in our area. Property values are sustained by pristine waters and shorelines. Prevention is key! To protect the greening effect in the watershed, WATeR is enlisting the help of property owners around the lake to take action to prevent greening. One major solution is for lakefront homeowners to plant a “riparian garden” (a garden that exists alongside a river) on their property to reduce the flow of nitrogen, phosphorous, and bug and weed chemicals into the Tellico Reservoir and damaging its water quality. What does it do? An effective riparian buffer zone on

the waterfront slows and absorbs rainwater runoff from the fertilized lawn above it. Plant roots in buffer zones take up nutrients off the lawn, and bacteria take up and metabolize pesticides in runoff from the lawn so they do not enter the lake. The larger the size of the riparian zone, the greater the likelihood that it will be effective to absorb excess nutrients that run off from lawns, but even a small buffer zone with native plants and porous soil is preferable to lawn grass. The riparian zone can decrease the risk of soil erosion and also serve as an esthetically
pleasing way to increase wildlife habitat. Where can I see one? WATeR volunteers recently installed a demonstration riparian garden at the Rock Point boat dock in Rarity Bay. It was dedicated to Mary Bridges in a well-attended ceremony on October 28, 2019. A second demonstration garden was installed on the waterfront behind the Tanasi Clubhouse in Tellico Village and will be dedicated on April 6th of this year. A second problem is algae. Algal growth is increased by phosphate, and the major source of phosphate is fertilizer that is applied to, and runs off from, waterfront properties into the lake. The quantity of these negative nutrients or fertilizers and pollutants such as weed and bug killers increases each year due to the increase of homeowners in and around the Tellico Reservoir. A second solution to prevent greening is the use of low-phosphate fertilizers on lawns. Homeowners are encouraged to ask local lawn maintenance services and fertilizer suppliers to use and sell low or phosphate-free fertilizers. Where can I get more information? Monroe County Friends of Animals Pets of the Week
R
osita is our dog of the week. She is a mixed boxer who was picked up as a stray in Madisonville. Rosita is healthy and a little over a year old and is full grown at 43 pounds. She has striking blue eyes, a happy, charming personality, and loves attention. Rosita appears to get along well with other dogs. When coming to the shelter to meet a dog, please remember their true personality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. They may consider their kennel a safe place and be uncomfortable when taken out. This doesn’t mean they aren’t sweet, loving dogs. It just means they are unsure or scared in this environment. Take some time to meet each dog. Let them get used to you for a few moments before you take him/her for a walk around the shelter grounds. Once you get your new pet home, allow them time to become adjusted to their new life. Depending on their background, living in a home may be a new experience for them. This may not happen overnight, so be patient and you will wind up with a happy, well-adjusted pet. Winkie and Whoopie (5 month old Orange Tabby brothers) came in as strays and were brought to us in a trap. We originally thought they would both be better as barn types, but Winkie has decided that humans are kind of useful. He is a bit shy and will give a small hiss when his condo is approached but soon becomes curious. He likes to be softly stroked and goes bonkers for feathers and toys. He will do best in a home with patient humans who grasp that he is a work in progress and will be well
worth the wait. Milo (DSH 1 year old) is quite the character. He was surrendered by owner because he will not stay in the house and wants to roam the neighborhood. (He is neutered and chipped.) He can be trained to be an indoor (safe at home) guy. He is incredibly sweet and affectionate but does not appreciate restraint or being picked up and held for any length of time. As such, we recommend a home without young children. Milo likes to play and is quite insistent that you pay him the homage he deserves. Inky (DSH 5 months old) is our resident Houdini! Sweet as molasses but a stinker for managing to escape his condo! He is playful, inquisitive, and affectionate, not to mention smart as a whip! Domestic cats are a social species. Yes, you can have cats that are buddies because they really like each other and not because they have to be. Kittens crave playmates, and they especially bond with their littermates. But even if you adopt kittens from separate litters, they will likely become instant besties. For most kittens, the way they learn social skills is by interacting and playing with each other. Please remember their true purrsonality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. Their condo is now their “safe place” and some struggle a bit when removed from it. That, by no means does NOT mean they aren’t sweet, loving lap cats. It means they are uncomfortable or scared. Take the time to meet each cat. Check it out – there are many more “Helpful Hints” for pet caregivers provided there. All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or
neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. Have you been to the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of The Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA)? It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. Donations are greatly appreciated and are accepted Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm. All proceeds go to help the homeless animals of Monroe County. Worker volunteers are always in high demand. Like us on Facebook for up to date sale information or call 423-420-3423. Would you consider becoming a foster for puppies, kittens, and adult dogs and cats? Some just need a break from shelter life, some are awaiting their turn on a rescue transport, and some just need some love. If you feel that you cannot adopt at this time, think about a short- or longterm foster situation. Call the shelter to find out more information. It’s a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

Ijams River Rescue Needs Volunteer Site Captains for Annual Cleanup March 28

jams Nature Center is looking for volunteer site captains for its 31st annual Ijams River Rescue scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 10 am to 1 pm. “We need to add 30 additional site captains to be able to reach more areas,” said Lauren Bird, Ijams Education Administrative Coordinator. “Site captains are crucial because they keep each site running smoothly and help address any issues that arise.” A site captain’s duties range from checking in volunteers and going over safety procedures to handing out snacks and completing a brief cleanup report. There are one to two site captains at each location. These volunteers receive training prior to the event. Ijams River Rescue, now in its 31st year, draws between 600-800 volunteers annually and removes between

oothills Craft Guild is the oldest member-based craft guild in Tennessee, with about 250 members. We have two jury sessions annually and host two fine craft shows each year – March 20-21 at the Venue at Lenoir City and November 6-8 at the Knoxville Expo Center. We also sponsor workshops and craft demonstrations of fine hand-crafted pieces. New members also may sell their work through the Foothills website. The Guild welcomes new members whose creative handiwork demonstrates stimulating visual appeal, good design, and fine craftsmanship. Work must go through a jurying process. All active Guild members are encouraged to participate in Guild activities by exhibiting or demonstrating at Guild shows, serving on committees or on the Board of Directors, or by participating in other activities sponsored by the Guild. How to Qualify for Membership 1. Applicants must reside in Tennessee. 2. Applicants must be accepted by the jury process. Applications and instructions may be found on our website at www.foothillscraftguild.org. 3. Applicants must submit five pieces of their craft along with five photos. 4. Items must be of original design and produced by the artist within the past two years. The next jury session for 2020 will be in July. pring is in the air! Except when it isn’t. Temperatures are warmer than average in general, but then we get a cold snap just frigid enough to nip new growth. My daffodils have been blooming since January, my forsythia has started to open buds, and there is new growth on everything! This makes me nervous, but I have learned that nature is adaptable. There is nothing you can do other than cover things up, and it is really too early to do that. That will come next month! My main word of advice is don’t get carried away. I don’t know exactly what the weather will do, but I do know that our average last frost is early to mid-April. I have seen people plant too early way too many times, and it never works out well. There are, however, many things that you can do on pretty days: » Do a walk around. You have to know where to begin before you know where to finish. Do you have trees that need to come down? Do you have trees that have grown so that a formerly sunny area is shady? Is a formerly shady area now sunny because the lot next door has been cleared or a tree has already come down? What condition are your plants in? What condition is your soil in? What would you like to do this spring to improve your yard? » Once your plan is in place, do a good cleanup. Get fallen leaves and plant debris out of the beds and see how badly the weeds have taken over. Cut perennials back to where new growth is emerging. Pull weeds and treat the beds with Preen or another pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. Work some good compost
into the soil to add nutrients. » Mulch isn’t just for aesthetics. It also protects the plants from the freeze/thaw cycles and keeps moisture stable. Do NOT use too much, however! Three inches is optimal. NEVER pile the mulch around the base of plants or create volcanoes around trees. Your mulch should look like a flattened donut around trees and shrubs. If you already have a good base of mulch in place, give it a good raking to “fluff” it. Mulch can become very compacted and hard over the winter. » You can plant cool season annuals, perennials, and vegetables. Please do not plant warm season annuals and veggies yet because they don’t like cold soil. A tomato planted while the soil is cold will grow, but it will not bear well. Flowers will sit and pout. Roots do not go out into cold soil, so you are wasting time and money rushing the season. » Please stop pruning your plants without research. You can seriously damage them. Crepe myrtles get murdered, hydrangeas and spring bloomers don’t bloom, and trees are horribly deformed by homeowners (and some bad “landscapers”) who have no idea what they are doing. It is also important to have sharp tools. Would you want a surgeon to operate on you with a dull knife? » Houseplants are ready for some TLC this time of year. Clean them up, check for problems, and up-pot if necessary. Don’t go too big! One pot size is enough. Use the best potting soil you can afford, because that will be what your plant lives on. Cheap dirt is like a junk food diet: It isn’t good for long term survival. » This is a good time to get your con-

tainers ready for the spring. You can dump the soil from small pots into your garden beds and work it in. Some pots may just need a quick rinse, and some may need a thorough scrubbing. If you had a fungal problem with the plants that were in the pot, rinse it with a mild bleach solution. If there are white lines on your pot, it is an indicator that you have been a bit overzealous with your fertilizing and salts are building up, so you need to scrub those off. If your containers are large, you don’t need to dump the entire thing out every year. If there are trees, shrubs, or perennials planted in them, you can top dress with compost. If you do seasonal planting, replace the top
6”-12” with fresh soil. If you have had problems with fungus or insects, however, you may want to start all over. Both can hide out in your soil and re-infect new plants. I’ll finish up this month with a reminder to take care of our feathered friends. Keep your feeders clean and full, keep birdbaths clean and full, and protect the birdhouses. uphorbia, often called spurge, belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a very diverse group of flowering plants with more than 2,100 species. The genus is represented all around the world and can vary dramatically in appearance, with some species having
forms that look like small cacti and others that become large, long-lived trees. In Tennessee, several herbaceous euphorbias are perennials. Historically, the milky latex often found in the stems of euphorbias has been used in traditional medicine to treat skin ulcers, warts, and intestinal parasites. treme irritant to the skin and eyes. Several species and cultivated varieties are listed below. These are available to gardeners and are valued for their year-round foliage color and unique flower interest. Varying climates across the state can affect durability, so be sure to check with the UT Gardens site in your region to see which specific varieties have performed well in your area. E. corollata is native to the United States and can be seen growing along our roadsides. This underutilized native is grown more for the baby’s breath-like blooms that start in late summer and continue into early fall. While not as cultivated as other species, the ‘Carolina Snow’ selection boasts showy blooms, proving why this tough native is worthy of a spot in the garden. Both E. amygdaloides and E. characias are native to Europe, and both species, as well as hybrids between the two, are largely responsible for the cultivars available today. E. x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow’ is highly sought after and for good reason. This hybrid features variegated foliage in shades of greens and yellows, with new emerging foliage tinged with red hues. Foliage also has red and orange hues during fall and winter months. E. characias ‘Tasmanian Tiger’ is another popular cultivar, with green leaves and striking white variegation. When viewing from a distance, this cultivar almost looks completely white to silver. E. amygdaloides ‘Waleuphglo’, also sold as E. amygdaloides ‘Ruby Glow’, is a wonderful selection that has bright ruby red spring foliage that matures to a dark purple-black color and has a more compact habit than other cultivars. These ranges of color make euphorbia fun to pair with other annuals and perennials for striking color combinations. While these cultivars look wonderful during spring and summer, their evergreen foliage is outstanding during dreary months. Flowers appear during late spring and into early summer with each stem topped by a thick, bottlebrush-like inflorescence. Bloom colors range from shades of yellows to greens and should be removed once spent to avoid reseeding. Their size typically ranges from one to three feet tall and wide, making these perfect to tuck into mixed borders, rock gardens, and containers. Spurge likes to be planted in full sun and in very welldrained soils. They will tolerate a little shade but tend to get leggy and look unkempt. Once established, they are fairly drought tolerant but appreciate moisture during the hot summer months. Along with being a fuss-free addition to the garden, they are also deer resistant. re you starting to anticipate retirement with its less pressure-packed days and no alarm clock?
