The Benefits of Sleepaway Camps for Children and Teens FREE

Volume 20, No. 3, Section A

A

Article courtesy of BPT

s a parent, you worry about your child’s future. Will they be confident enough to weather life’s ups and downs? Will they find happiness and success? How will they navigate their future challenges? According to research by the American Camp Association (ACA), a traditional sleepaway camp - where a child or teen spends one to four weeks away from home - helps them experience growth and development beyond a specialized day “camp” or class. Rather than spending a

week learning computer coding or at a hyper-focused sports camp, a sleepaway camp develops qualities that last a lifetime.

Enhanced self-development

It may seem hard to let your child spend so much time away, but camp can be a huge boost to their confidence, independence, and resilience. It also builds social-emotional skills to benefit them through adulthood. » Confidence comes from doing. A child who must do things on their own, without a parent nearby, learns they can accomplish much more than they thought. » Becoming self-reliant and developing a feeling of competence comes from attempting - and sometimes failing - until they succeed. » Learning to persevere through discomfort helps a child feel like they can handle anything, creating resilience. A camp experience that builds independence, self-reliance, and confidence is a huge gift - and parents can give that

gift to their children by finding a camp that boosts a child’s sense of self. For example, Cheley Colorado Camps, a traditional sleepaway camp celebrating its 100th year, is designed to give children a chance to slow down, learn about themselves, connect with nature, and explore new things in a relaxed, supportive environment. “Parents and campers tell us the camp experience was life-changing,” said Brooke Cheley-Klebe, camp director and fourth-generation Cheley family camp leadership. “It is not only a mechanism for growth, but an experience that shapes their life in a positive way for years to come.”

Expanding horizons

Being away from home means your child leaves their comfort zone. Sharing space with kids they’ve never met, from different backgrounds, states, or countries, is also a completely new experience. Exploring challenging activities expands your child’s world, which can be fun, exhilarating, and self-affirming.

If your child or teen has never ridden a horse or gone rafting, these activities may stretch their abilities beyond what they thought they could achieve. Cheley campers partake in dozens of outdoor activities, crafts, and more. Trying a variety of new things changes a child’s idea of what they’re capable of - much more than camps focusing on one subject - fostering curiosity, perseverance, a love of learning, and inner confidence.

Connecting with nature

As young people increasingly spend time indoors, they lose opportunities to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty around them. Spending time outdoors improves young people’s ability to live in the moment. Affinity for nature was one of the top benefits of camp found in the ACA study. Sleeping under the stars and exploring the outdoors foster an appreciation for nature that can’t be achieved any other way. continued on page 2A ...

Unplugging from technology

Sometimes it seems like technology and social media have taken over, especially for young people. Giving up technology for weeks may seem impossible, but the results are astonishing. A decrease in anxiety and an increase in happiness are noticeable in most campers when they unplug. In the ACA research, teens and children who unplugged reported learning how to live in the moment. They stopped worrying about the past or future, instead focusing on their present experiences. Putting down technology means learning to look other people in the eye. They develop better social skills while reading each other’s non-verbal cues, like facial expressions and body language. Face-to-face interaction is the only way to develop those skills.

Lifelong friendships

Kids at sleepaway camp bond with other campers in a deep, lasting way. Sharing the camp experience creates a sense of community, fostering lifelong friendships. In the ACA research, children and teens said making new friends was the best part of camp. They - and their parents - said social skills learned from camp helped them develop friendships at school, long after camp ended. While you may initially feel reluctant to send your child to camp, giving your child this gift can be life-changing. To learn more, visit www.cheley.com.

Annual Arts Gala in Athens on March 7th

T

he annual Arts Gala, Athens Area Council for the Arts’ most significant fundraiser, is scheduled for Saturday, March 7, at The Arts Center in downtown Athens. The event is a 40th Birthday Party theme and celebrates and supports the arts in our area. The hours for the event are 6:30 to 11 pm, and dressing in finest attire for the period of your choice from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 00s is suggested. Tickets are $75 per person, and advanced reservations are required. Arts Gala 2020 promises a variety of experiences throughout the event. The evening begins with the opening of the silent auction, cash bar, and hors d’oeuvres. Live music is the soundtrack during cocktail hour as guests peruse auction items donated by area artists, individuals, and businesses. Before the buffet catered by Michael’s, there is a live auction of larger items ranging from original art to travel. Then soul party band Jason Eskridge & Friends continue playing, bringing guests to the dance floor until 11 pm. Proceeds from The Arts Gala are earmarked to support school and community arts education. AACA has been a vital presence in McMinn County since 1979, presenting thousands of performances, exhibitions, artist residencies,

art classes, and more by international, regional, and local artists of all types and genres. It has created and sustained many arts groups throughout the years, including the Athens Community Theatre, the Athens Area Children’s Choir, the Unity Gospel Choir, and has contributed technical assistance to many more groups and individuals. AACA’s current program of work is featured at www.athensartscouncil.org.

Tickets and table reservations are available at The Arts Center, located at 320 North White Street in Athens, online at www.athensartscouncil.org, or by phone at 423-745-8781. The event organizers kindly request that attendees purchase tickets by March 3. This event is for patrons 21 and older. Anyone interested in donating to the auction or to the event in any way may call The Arts Center.

A

thens Area Council for the Arts (AACA) is pleased to announce a Spring Craft Show on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, from 10 am to 8 pm each day, with a ticketed preview party on Thursday, April 2, from 6 to 8 pm. Show, and more vendors are registering each day. TWU Dental Hygiene Program Moves to Athens

T

ennessee Wesleyan’s Dental Hygiene Clinic has successfully moved from Madisonville to Athens and is now serving the community. According to Dental Hygiene Program Director Randa Colbert, the number one mission of the clinic to deliver oral care service whether patients have insurance or not. The new facility, which is located at the former McSpadden Furniture building on White Street, has all-new equipment. Services include cleaning, x-rays, fluoride, and sealants. The TWU Dental Hygiene program is fully accredited through Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) of the American Dental Association. “The Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program fits with the mission and vision of TWU to serve the region by providing relevant programs of study in allied health,” said TWU VP of Academic Affairs, Dr. Grant Willhite, of the program’s academic strength. “The TWU Dental Hygiene program is very similar in structure to the TWU-Fort Sanders Nursing program that continues to set the standard of excellence in the Knoxville area for undergraduate nursing preparation. We anticipate that the TWU Dental Hygiene program will likewise set the standard of excellence in the region for dental hygienists.” Tennessee Wesleyan acquired the dental hygiene program after Hiwassee College closed its doors last year. After the college’s closure, Hiwassee’s Board of Trustees met on May 2, 2019, to determine the fate of the program and chose the fellow Methodist-affiliated institution to continue dental hygiene. March Highlights From the Publisher

f you are like me, you probably are excited at the prospect of spring especially after this challenging wet winter season. Temperatures are now on the rise and although there might be a cold snap on occasion, I know it is short lived as spring pushes through. During the colder days that keep us indoors, a type of “cabin fever” sets in which makes it undesirable to venture out. But warmer days invite us to get outdoors and enjoy the area such as hiking in the mountains; cleaning up the winter debris in the yard; shopping the area’s boutiques; attending area events such as musicals, theatre presentations and workshops and lectures; and enhancing our interior and exterior living spaces. In this March edition we have included a variety of products and services for the home and garden that will help to eliminate those spring chores on your list. Check out all that we have to offer. March is a transitional month between winter and spring so bear with the crazy weather. And don’t forget to turn your clocks one hour forward on March 8th! Let spring begin!

he Blount County Public Library is excited to host and welcome Steve Ross and Dana Jester. Steve is the son of the artist Bob Ross and has been seen with Dana Jester on the well-known “Joy of Painting.” Ari Baker, Education Services Manager, is excited to welcome the pair to the library. “Some of the library’s favorite programs start from serendipitous connections that lead to unique opportunities for our community members - whether that’s robotics, or woodworking, or bluegrass, or quilting, or painting happy little trees!” said Baker. “We love that people think of BCPL when they want to share their skills with our community.” On Thursday, March 5, at 6:30 pm, Mr. Ross and Mr. Jester will be giving a seated lecture that is free and open to the public. Mr. Ross will hold a painting demo while he speaks about his life as an artist, working with his father, and will take questions from the audience. Although there is ample seating in the Main Gallery, the library asks that patrons prepare for a crowded evening and plan accordingly. In addition to the public program, Mr. Ross and Mr. Jester will be facilitating four separate workshops on

March 4-7. These classes will be $125 per day, and each day will be an individual painting class from 9 am to 4 pm with a lunch break. Participants must provide their own supplies, and there is an age limit of age 16 or older. Dana Jester will be teaching the Wednesday and Friday class, and Steve Ross will be teaching the Thursday and Saturday class. Seats are limited and filling quickly. To register, email steverossdanajester@gmail.com. Signsups can only be done through this email. “One of the most exciting parts of coordinating this experience has been being able to bring a program to the public that is accessible and may be a once in a lifetime experience,” said Janna Federer, Public Events Coordinator at the library. “We’re expecting a large crowd on Thursday night and hope that patrons of all ages and backgrounds can come out and learn from Mr. Ross as he spends time with members of our community.” Open to the public, this program is hosted by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street in Maryville, where services are an example of your tax dollars at work for you. For more information about library programs or services, call the library at 865-982-0981 or visit www. blountlibrary.org. uch has been said in this column about how to handle visits to your salon, but until now, nothing has been discussed concerning how to “exit” your salon if there are irreconcilable differences. While there are very few instances that cannot be resolved with proper communication and a little hard work, there are times you can become the recipient of one or more undesirable results and decide to try a new provider. The first Exit Strategy is when you simply leave the salon and do not return. Many times guests of a salon will

leave, never to return without having had a constructive conversation about their visit with either their provider or the manager of the salon. It is very difficult to provide satisfaction to our guests under this Exit Strategy, and it is best to pursue a better solution that will lead you to a desirable result. Also, leaving a salon without ever making anyone aware of your unpleasant visit is the best way to make sure you are never satisfied at that particular salon. Another Exit Strategy is when a guest chooses to leave their current provider for another within the same salon.

Custom Closets Keep the Family Organized and Happy

M

ost families have both organized and messy individuals, and they don’t always live in sweet harmony. Constantly tripping over someone’s shoes in the middle of the floor gets old and frustrating. Organization is not a natural inclination for everyone, but it is essential for a less stressful life. And when you live with others, it’s also a courtesy to maintain your own stuff and space. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help get life under control for all your family members with custom closet systems to meet the specific needs of each person.

Kids’ Closets That Grow with Them

It’s never too early to start introducing the habit of organization into your child’s world. Starting with a closet they can manage on their own or with a little help, this encourages them to be organized and responsible. There is no such thing as a “one-size-fits-all” kid’s closet, but a basic design includes:

Preschool and Grade School

» Low-level bins and shelves for toys and shoes they can put away themselves » Tiered hanging rods multiply the hanging space and are adjustable as they grow » Drawers or slide-out baskets to put away socks, pajamas, and underwear

Middle School and Teen

» Tiered hanging rods for long and short items, scaled to the child’s height » Adjustable shelves for clothes, shoes, books, and favorite collections » Decorative hooks create easy storage for jackets and backpacks » A pull-out laundry hamper corrals dirty clothes and keeps the floor clear » Drawers can organize folded clothes or be customized with dividers to hold small items

Shared Master Closets That Keep the Peace

A shared closet can be a perpetually frustrating experience, but it doesn’t have to be. With a carefully designed space, a shared closet can provide individual, organized storage for two, accommodating both wardrobes and accessories. Each person will have space for what they need so they aren’t competing for territory by including: » His and hers hanging sections and drawers, including a jewelry drawer for her » Dedicated individual shoe racks » Shelves for folded items, hats, purses, and more » Tilt-out hamper to toss dirty clothes » Specialty racks for belts and ties » Retractable valet rods are an extra hand for putting an outfit together or handling dry cleaning Whatever your needs, Tailored Living of Knoxville will design a custom closet for any member of your family. As whole-home organization specialists, Tailored Living also has innovative storage solutions for the pantry, laundry, home offices, garage, and more. We help turn chaos into calm! Big Ears Festival in Downtown Knoxville March 26-29

March, 2020, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 9A

K

noxville’s internationally acclaimed Big Ears Festival is only a few weeks away, opening Thursday, March 26, and running through Sunday, March 29. Both the Bijou Theatre and Tennessee Theatre are proud to be some of the featured venues and look forward to hosting many of the festival’s most compelling performances.

programs at the Tennessee during Big Ears. On Saturday, March 28, they take the stage with their dynamic live-documentary, A Thousand Thoughts, a collaboration with filmmaker Sam Green, which received a Special Selection award at Sundance. On Sunday, March 29, Kronos will join forces with the singular composer Terry Riley, with whom they shared a Grammy Award this year, to chart a musical partnership that spans over four decades.

Lineup at the Bijou Theatre

Led Zeppelin bassist and keyboard player John Paul Jones will offer two extremely rare performances during Big Ears. Always a musical adventurer, Jones’ post-Zeppelin work encompasses rock, opera, folk, bluegrass, and a number of forays into the avant-garde. On Friday, March 27, he’ll introduce audiences to his duo, Sons of Chipotle, with Finnish cellist Annsi Kartunnen. On March 28, he’ll perform a rare solo concert employing piano, mandolin, and electronics - an extended improvisatory reverie from one of the most iconic musicians of his generation. On Saturday, March 28, the enigmatic Annette Peacock will make a very rare live appearance at Big Ears. In the 1960s, Peacock made her mark with a songbook of mysterious jazz tunes; in the 1970s, David Bowie signed her to his new label. In the intervening decades, Peacock has continued making groundbreaking excursions into punk, new wave, and chamber music. The New York Times called her “the most remarkable - and mercurial living singer and composer you’ve almost certainly never heard.” A pair of celebrated and groundbreaking young female composers will present new work at the Bijou. North Carolina-born singer, composer, and violinist Caroline Shaw - 2013 Pulitzer Prize and 2019 Grammy Award winner - will present a new collaboration with Sō Percussion on Saturday, March 28. Nathalie Joachim, a singer, composer, and flutist, offers her collaboration with the Spektral Quartet on Friday, March 27. They’ll showcase music from the Grammy-nominated album Femn d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti), a homage to Joachim’s Haitian heritage.

Other Weekend Highlights at the Bijou Theatre

» Efterklang & Múm: Two of the turn of the century’s most enigmatic alternative rock bands, Denmark’s Efterklang and Iceland’s Múm make return appearances in the USA for the first time in many years. Efterklang performs on Friday evening, and Múm performs on Saturday evening. » Electric Appalachia: The musical duo of harpist Mary Lattimore and guitarist William Tyler will present their collaboration with Knoxville’s film archivists TAMIS (Tennessee Archive of Moving Image & Sound) on Sunday afternoon. » Jeff Parker, Myra Melford, Peter Brötzmann, and

Other Weekend Highlights at the Tennessee Theatre

Andrew Cyrille: Jazz sets from Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker & New Breed and 2013 Guggenheim fellow pianist-composer Myra Melford’s Snowy Egret. Plus, German free jazz titan Peter Brötzmann goes head to head in a duet with powerhouse heavyweight drummer Andrew Cyrille. Shows run through the festival weekend. » Bang on a Can All-Stars: Classical new music ensemble Bang on a Can All-Stars will re-imagine their initial recording, Renegade Heaven, updated with work by Ornette Coleman and Julius Eastman, along with BoaC founders Michael Gordon, David Lang, and Julia Wolfe on Saturday afternoon. » Daniel Piori & Valgeir Sigrudsson: The young British classical violin wizard Daniel Pioro, a muse for Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, will present his collaboration with Iceland’s producer, composer, and pianist Valgeir Sigurdsson on Thursday evening. » Winged Victory for the Sullen: The musical duo of Dustin O’Halloran and Adam Witzlie return to Big Ears with a program of ambient soundscapes inspired by Swedish abstract artist Hilma af Klint’s spiritualist group “The Five” on Sunday evening. » Arooj Aftab & the Vulture Prince Ensemble: Sufiinspired Pakistani singer and composer Arooj Aftab introduces her all-star band, Vulture Prince Ensemble, at Big Ears on Thursday evening. » The Necks: The miraculous Australian jazz trio, The Necks, who have been described as a “magic act disguised as a band,” or sometimes simply “the greatest band in the world,” return to Big Ears for two shows - the second at the Bijou on Sunday afternoon.

Lineup at the Tennessee Theatre

This year legendary rock icon, poet, and National Book Award winner Patti Smith will perform two unique concerts during the festival. On Thursday, March 26, Smith will present an intimate acoustic evening called “Words and Music” that blends readings of her poetry and prose with a special selection of songs. On Friday, March 27, Patti Smith & Her Band will perform in all of their glory. Visionary ensemble Kronos Quartet will also present two

» Meredith Monk with the Bang on a Can All-Stars: Memory Game. The fearlessly innovative and visionary singer and composer presents a collaboration with the legendary new music ensemble. A world premiere is on Sunday evening. » Anthony Braxton’s Thunder Music Ensemble: Avantgarde legend, NEA Jazz Master, and MacArthur Fellow Braxton ends a 75th birthday celebration weekend at Big Ears premiering new music performed by a 10-piece ensemble. A world premiere on Sunday afternoon. » Jason Moran & The Harlem Hellfighters: Dazzling jazz pianist, MacArthur Fellow, and curator of Jazz at the Kennedy Center pays tribute to the neglected ragtime pianist James Reese Europe, who is credited with bringing American jazz to Europe as a soldier during World War I. Moran brings a 10-piece band to Big Ears for this acclaimed multimedia project on Thursday evening. » Tindersticks: The legendary British alternative rock champions of beauty, longing, and melancholy present their first American concert in more than a decade, on the heels of a new record, No Treasure But Hope, on Saturday evening. » Joe Henry’s 115th Dream: A “dream band” assembled by the exceptional singer/songwriter/producer Joe Henry, especially for Big Ears, and featuring guitarist Mark Ribot and pianist Jason Moran on Friday evening. » Sound for Andy Warhol’s KISS: Rock goddess Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), with guitarists Bill Nace and Steve Gunn, along with drummer John Truscinski, create live accompaniment to Warhol’s infamous film. A commission of the Warhol Museum on Friday evening. » The Haden Triplets: Daughters of the legendary jazz bassist Charlie Haden explore the roots and branches of American music and their family traditions, with music from their new album, The Family Songbook, on Friday afternoon. While both weekend passes and single day passes remain available to Big Ears, quantities are limited, and the festival is on track to sell out, for the first time, in advance of the weekend. Premiere Consignment

T

Your Home’s Makeover Headquarters By Aaron Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

here are very few days that I would describe as dull or boring at Premiere Consignment in nearby Tellico Village. The vast variety of household items that we accept for consignment, combined with the personalities and stories of both our consignors and customers, provide an endless source of fascinating anecdotes. When you consider that the items we sell were acquired from throughout North America and occasionally from around the world as our consignors pursued their individual careers, and that many of the items we re-sell include antiques, as well as items that have been in some families for many generations, shopping at Premiere Consignment can be an adventure in itself. Retirees converge on the Tellico Lake area from all around the globe, bringing with them possessions they have acquired throughout their lifetimes, many of which find themselves at Premiere Consignment. We encourage our many customers to visit us often, as we accept new inventory items daily. Discover room settings and individual accent pieces from the nation’s top furniture brands, including Henredon, Bernhardt, Hooker, and more. We also feature quality Oriental and area rugs, table and floor lighting, décor items, and a large selection of wall art, including limited edition prints from both national and regional artists. So whether you need to furnish an entire home or just a single room, you’re likely to discover what you’re looking for locally at Premiere Consignment - and at prices far below their original retail cost. If you own unused, quality, pre-owned furniture, room décor, art, or Oriental rugs resulting from downsizing, relocation, or an update, Premiere Consignment can help turn those unneeded items into cash without the hassle of placing classified ads, waiting for strangers to show up at your home, or hoping the buyer’s check clears your bank. We take the uncertainty out of re-selling your unneeded household items. We can even help you with your moving or estate sale. Just give us a call, visit us online, or, better yet, visit our retail showroom, and we will be happy to share with you the many ways Premiere Consignment can assist you. And while you’re here, don’t forget to ask us about our online eBay store that opens the entire world to all of our consignors. 14A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, March, 2020

T

he Tellico Village Community Church Crafters will be holding their spring craft and bake sale on Saturday, April 4, from 9 am until noon in the Christian Life Center of the Church, which is located at 130 Chota Center in Tellico Village. Items for sale include a wide variety of floral arrangements, including wreaths, table arrangements, and other silk floral displays. If you need a decorative cover for your mailbox, the Crafters have a wide range of seasonal covers that are available either at the sale or by special order. The many talented sewers and knitters create a host of home décor products for sale, including the ever popular “scrubbies,” golf seat covers, baby quilts, table runners, placemats, knitted items, and dolls, just to name a few. Paper goods, such as note cards and envelopes, bridge tallies, etc., are also available for purchase at the sale. The jewelry makers always have a group of shoppers lined up who are looking for something original for themselves or for friends and family. Be sure to arrive early to get the best selection of homemade baked goods. They go fast, and some items can be frozen and used at Easter. Another favorite at the bake sale is the ever popular “Jezebel” Sauce. Women from all across Tellico Village and beyond work with the Crafters. You don’t have to be a member of the church to participate. Whatever the skill level, there is always a place for newcomers. Crafters meet most Mondays from 9:30 to 11:30 am in the Christian Life Center of the Church. All proceeds from the craft sales benefit local organizations and charities. Last year $26,400 was donated to the community. So come and find some treasures and contribute to your community at the same time. Bring your cash or a check since credit cards are not accepted.

What’s New at 143 Chota Center in Tellico Village

M

ost of us are familiar with the Lutheran Church that shares space with Click Funeral Home, but some major changes are happening. To accommodate our growing congregation, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church purchased the building housing Click Funeral Home in 2019. That business will remain, but Edward Jones and Physicians Hearing Care are in the process of moving to new locations. An extensive redesign of the exterior to allow the building to look and function as a church is underway. To provide for current and future growth, we needed to expand our worship, fellowship area, and offices. We are now in the process of starting the interior Phase 1: » The bathrooms are being enlarged, and a family restroom is being added. » The church offices are being moved to the other end of the building, allowing us to substantially enlarge our fellowship space. As development continues, we will share the continuing progress being made by our expansion team, architect, and contractors. We look forward the enhancement of Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church to serve our parishioners and the community as we live out our mission of sharing God’s love with the world. The community is welcome to stop and take a look.

Phil Keaggy by

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

n the history of Contemporary Christian Music, one of the patriarchs of the genre is a man who played with some of its early trailblazers. That man is the world-renowned guitarist, Phil Keaggy. Keaggy has been active in Christian music since his conversion in 1970, blowing people’s minds with his amazing guitar wizardry that has earned him much respect from within CCM and many accolades from outside the genre as well. In a recent extensive interview, Keaggy shared openly about his career in and out of the CCM industry, the challenges he and his wife had with suffering the pain of multiple miscarriages, his prolific production of work, both solo as well as collaboratively, and who he’s been able to meet and play with. Pil Keaggy About his solo work and how it’s “getting out there,” Keaggy shared: “I’ve been an Indie artist now for about 18 years, since the last record label I belonged to was Word Records. They let me go in 2002, and since then, everything I’ve been putting out has been just Indie. That means no marketing or distribution. Very little radio. But I keep working, because that’s my job, and I still do concerts because a number of people still like to hear me play and sing and do my songs. So the thing is, I keep creating, and I’ve been doing a lot of collaboration, especially during the last, I’ll say 10, 12 years with other writers and artists/musicians.” Then, turning a little more serious, Keaggy shared some of his feelings about the CCM industry. “The industry has changed,” he said. “We don’t have CD stores like we used to. We don’t have record stores except for Bernadette & Phil’s specialty shops, you could say, where you can find LPs. So Wedding Day when I do concerts, I make my music available to people at the concerts.” In addition to his amazing catalog of work that is still growing, Keaggy has played with various names outside of CCM. He humbly talked about them when asked. “I’ll be 69 in March, and I’ve had great opportunities during my lifetime to play with people I really admire. Say, for instance, Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta. Those two guys - to be on the same album with guys that played with Peter Gabriel and McCartney and Lennon and all these all these amazing musicians and all these amazing artists. “I did get a chance to play at Linda McCartney sister’s wedding back in 1990. As a result of that, I had a chance to just sit down and play guitars with Paul McCartney for about 20 minutes. After which McCartney said, ‘You have a nice voice. Remind me a bit of James Taylor.’ I mean, he was a great influence on me from a melodic standpoint, a tonal standpoint, vocally. One of the great, great writers and artists of all time, of course, and it was an honor to meet him. It was kind of surreal, actually. “So anyway, that’s one of the stories I wouldn’t have ever presumed or assumed or

imagined in my wildest dreams - that I’d be in the studio with someone like McCartney or Clapton or any of those kinds of players that were influential. But I have played for Rick Derringer on one of his tracks and on Airborne Ranger with Mark Farner, the guitarist from Grand Funk. I have played on a few projects by other people. Greg Martin of the Kentucky Headhunters is a great guy. Great guitar player, fun guy.” Later in our conversation on some other subjects, Keaggy added, “I enjoyed meeting Mickey Dolenz. I played on six of his 12 songs on his album called Remember. I’ve been to his house out in California. We had a listening party with a lot of friends and artists that you would recognize that were there. One of my favorite solos I’ve ever done on anyone’s album was on his album - on the Nilsson song called Remember, the title song. Yeah, Mickey - he’s fun. A talented guy. For his age, the guy’s singing is still great.” With our chat wrapping up, the guitar meister said this of his life: “We all have a chance to leave a mark - leave something behind worth remembering. Those are the things that matter to me. You know, the fruit of the spirit stuff: Love and joy and peace. I want to be a peacemaker.” This interview was quite extensive and can be read in its entirety at www.boomerocity. com. You can also order Keaggy’s amazing work at www.PhilKeaggy.com, as well as see a wide range of his performances on YouTube.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

“Consumer Choice” or “Consumer Beware?”

T

here is a movement across the country to reduce the number of regulations imposed on consumers, including the licensing and regulation of professional licenses. It is being promoted as a reduction or elimination of “barriers to enter a profession.” Most of the legislation introduced across the country would allow a consumer to make the choice of using a licensed or unlicensed professional. They generally require the consumer to sign an acknowledgement that the person is not licensed to perform those services and the consumer accepts any risk. Two bills recently introduced in Tennessee, HB1945 and SB1914, would allow unlicensed workers in certain fields to do business without a license as long as the consumer knows and acknowledges that fact. The lists of professions include accountants, architects, engineers, barbers, cosmetologists, funeral directors and embalmers, contractors, home inspectors, plumbers, land surveyors, real estate brokers, private investigators, those engaged

in the application of pesticides, tattoo artist, body piercing artist, alarm contractors and fire extinguisher and fire protection sprinkler systems. Other bills introduced across the country are similar and some include lawyers and doctors.

But should every licensed profession be allowed to be performed by unlicensed individuals?

Responsible professional licensing ensures a minimum level of qualifications and is critical in professions that have a high impact on public health safety and welfare – professions such as architecture, professional surveying and engineering, landscape architecture, and public accounting. To address complex challenges, these professionals meet rigorous standards that ensure a comprehensive understanding of their field and the complex codes and laws that govern it. Licensing is about more than just entry into a profession. A responsible licensing system: » Protects consumers from unqualified practitioners and services » Ensures continuing education so that

ecently Keener Homes completed a major remodel on our home in Rarity Bay, and we could not be more ecstatic. We bought our first home in Tellico Village from the Keeners in 2002 and knew they were the right choice for our major remodel, which involved removing all stucco and replacing with brick and stone; adding a screened-in porch; replacing the deck; adding hardscape and pavers for the driveway, dry below under the deck, outdoor patio with a kitchen L, fire pit, sitting wall, and walkway to the dock; as well as redoing the landscaping. This remodel was just like building a new home. From the initial design to the destruction and construction phases, we could not be more pleased. Kit Keener, his project manager (Derek Miller), and office manager (Krisha Loud) were superb throughout the entire process, making recommendations that greatly enhanced our initial vision for our “Cabin on the Lake” and one that will be a legacy for our family for years to come. Thanks to Kit, Derek, and Krisha for making this our ultimate retirement home and one that the entire family will enjoy for years to come. Keener Homes is certainly a “5-Star” builder who goes the extra mile for their clients. It has indeed been a pleasure knowing the Keeners for almost 20 years and giving them a special thanks for making our dream home a reality. Thanks!” www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759 Rick andPlaza, CathyLoudon, Dickson 218 -Lakeside TN 37774

licensees in highly technical and complex professions remain knowledgeable about best practices and changing regulations » Provides for official oversight and a means of sanctioning bad actors through licensing boards So-called “consumer choice” legislation could discard professional licensing in favor of “qualifications optional,” should it really be called “Consumer Beware!” Should a notice and a waiver be adequate substitutes for meeting minimal qualifications to perform the work – particularly work that impacts the health, safety, and welfare of the public.

practitioners. Consumers will be at greater risk from unqualified practitioners without the minimum qualifications, ongoing training, oversight and enforcement responsible licensing models provide. The licensing boards that oversee these professions bestow authority to individual engineers, surveyors, architects, landscape architects, and CPAs to certify compliance, quality, and integrity of work. This “seal of approval” confers a legal responsibility for upholding the integrity and safety of our public and private spaces and financial systems. And, this level of responsibility – and liability – rightly requires intensive and ongoing education, examination, and experience provided by good licensing models. Some consumer decisions impact not only the consumer who makes the choice, but the greater public. Such legislation could allow the choice and unlicensed architect or engineer to design a new bridge, to be constructed by an unlicensed contractor and inspected by an unlicensed inspector. The risk of this decision reaches far beyond the person who accepts this risk, it reaches to every person who drives across that bridge. A distinction should be acknowledged that it is not a one size fits all. Some consumer choices only impact the individual consumer, others impact the public as a whole. Consumer Choice or Consumer Beware?

Professional licensing protects consumers and the public: Consumer Beware puts them at risk.

Professional licensing is an important indicator of a baseline level of expertise and qualification that helps protect the public from unqualified practitioners. Professional licensing as an indicator of qualification is particularly critical in highly complex, technical professions for which lay people do not have the specialized knowledge needed to evaluate qualifications and performance. Professional licensing boards play a critical role in ensuring and enforcing qualifications that protect the public. Proposals to eliminate licensing would shift the burden of ensuring qualifications from experts to the public and exposes the public to greater risk from unqualified

The Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir

T

By John Shryock

he beauty and versatility of Tellico Lake and the reservoir from Chilhowee Dam to Tellico Dam in Lenoir City is important to us all. The Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) is a not-forprofit organization dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of this body of water and the streams and rivers that feed into it. WATeR recognizes that growth of algae causing a “greening” effect in the reservoir is a present threat to water quality because algae can lead to the development of slime and the growth of unwanted plants at the shoreline. Clean water is important to those who swim and fish in the reservoir and esthetically pleasing to recreational visitors who spend millions of dollars in our area. Property values are sustained by pristine waters and shorelines. Prevention is key! To protect the greening effect in the watershed, WATeR is enlisting the help of property owners around the lake to take action to prevent greening. One major solution is for lakefront homeowners to plant a “riparian garden” (a garden that exists alongside a river) on their property to reduce the flow of nitrogen, phosphorous, and bug and weed chemicals into the Tellico Reservoir and damaging its water quality. What does it do? An effective riparian buffer zone on

The demonstration riparian garden in Tellico Village. Note the swale in the middle one-third of the garden. It holds water from lawns, allowing the plants time to absorb phosphorous, nitrogen, and other harmful chemicals from entering the lake.

the waterfront slows and absorbs rainwater runoff from the fertilized lawn above it. Plant roots in buffer zones take up nutrients off the lawn, and bacteria take up and metabolize pesticides in runoff from the lawn so they do not enter the lake. The larger the size of the riparian zone, the greater the likelihood that it will be effective to absorb excess nutrients that run off from lawns, but even a small buffer zone with native plants and porous soil is preferable to lawn grass. The riparian zone can decrease the risk of soil erosion and also serve as an esthetically

pleasing way to increase wildlife habitat. Where can I see one? WATeR volunteers recently installed a demonstration riparian garden at the Rock Point boat dock in Rarity Bay. It was dedicated to Mary Bridges in a well-attended ceremony on October 28, 2019. A second demonstration garden was installed on the waterfront behind the Tanasi Clubhouse in Tellico Village and will be dedicated on April 6th of this year. A second problem is algae. Algal growth is increased by phosphate, and the major source of phosphate is fertilizer that is applied to, and runs off from, waterfront properties into the lake. The quantity of these negative nutrients or fertilizers and pollutants such as weed and bug killers increases each year due to the increase of homeowners in and around the Tellico Reservoir. A second solution to prevent greening is the use of low-phosphate fertilizers on lawns. Homeowners are encouraged to ask local lawn maintenance services and fertilizer suppliers to use and sell low or phosphate-free fertilizers. Where can I get more information? Visit WATeR’s website at www.tellicowater.org or email ihm23@aol. com to request a consultation from a WATeR specialist because other conditions such as sun, shade, and elevation can influence the design of your garden. Please visit either demonstration site. The kiosk has construction information and a list of native Tennessee plants used.

Knoxville High Apartment Living LIVE EASY. LOVE LIFE.

O

n the corner of 5th Avenue and Central Street, the elegant old Knoxville High School building is a well-known landmark to those who love the city of Knoxville - and a cherished memory for those who studied within its walls. The school officially closed its doors to students in 1951, but it remained a part of city life through various uses until 2015. That’s when local firm Dover Signature Properties saw incredible potential in the bones of the place. Owners Laurie and Rick Dover and their team planned a thorough restoration effort that would bring back life to the old classrooms by turning them into luxury senior apartments.

The layout and design of the former school building were a natural fit for creating living spaces, and its appealing architectural details gave the new space a personality and character you simply can’t find in new construction. As a building in the Classical Revival style that appears on the National Register of Historic Places, Knoxville High was restored with faithful attention to historic detail while also meeting stringent LEED environmental standards. The result is a building that’s beautiful to look at - and comfortable to live in. Knoxville High Apartment Living, which was named the number one renovation project for senior living in the country by Senior Housing

avid Brewster, co-owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, has been a frequent guest on my radio show, “Around the House,” on Newstalk 98.7. My live home improvement show can be heard on Saturdays from 7 to 9 am. David helped me and my listeners understand how Aqua Clear Water Systems could eliminate the lime deposits on my home’s faucets, in addition to my dry skin condition, which resulted from using untreated water. My laundry detergent also goes twice as far, and the treated water rinses my clothing so much better. And, best of all, my drinking water tastes great. My ice is clearer, and it’s taste and odor free. Aqua Clear Water Systems even helped clear up my dog’s dry skin. The in-home consultation and water testing was thoroughly and professionally done. Everything was done as I looked on, and I was shocked to see how many solids were in my water! I could not believe my eyes! We then discussed a variety of options to select from.

The installation team was exceptional! They left no mess at all. The Aqua Clear Water Systems installers, Brian and Jesse, were truly professional and courteous! Everything was explained to me, and they answered all of my questions. They even took pictures of the installation so if I have any questions in the future, they can refer to the photos on file in real time, saving time and money. I am an Aqua Clear Water Systems believer. My hair is softer and has more shine. My skin is so moist, and my cost of soap has been cut in half - and all from a filtration system that doesn’t even require electricity. Amazing! I would rate my Aqua Clear Water Systems experience as ★★★★★ exceptional! Aqua Clear Water Systems really does change your water... it has changed my life! I never knew what I was missing. It’s an unbelievable value. Aqua Clear Water Systems 1767 Kevin Lane Lenoir City, TN 37772 865-225-6555 www.aquaclearws.com

Monroe County Friends of Animals Pets of the Week

R

osita is our dog of the week. She is a mixed boxer who was picked up as a stray in Madisonville. Rosita is healthy and a little over a year old and is full grown at 43 pounds. She has striking blue eyes, a happy, charming personality, and loves attention. Rosita appears to get along well with other dogs. When coming to the shelter to meet a dog, please remember their true personality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. They may consider their kennel a safe place and be uncomfortable when taken out. This doesn’t mean they aren’t sweet, loving dogs. It just means they are unsure or scared in this environment. Take some time to meet each dog. Let them get used to you for a few moments before you take him/her for a walk around the shelter grounds. Once you get your new pet home, allow them time to become adjusted to their new life. Depending on their background, living in a home may be a new experience for them. This may not happen overnight, so be patient and you will wind up with a happy, well-adjusted pet. Winkie and Whoopie (5 month old Orange Tabby brothers) came in as strays and were brought to us in a trap. We originally thought they would both be better as barn types, but Winkie has decided that humans are kind of useful. He is a bit shy and will give a small hiss when his condo is approached but soon becomes curious. He likes to be softly stroked and goes bonkers for feathers and toys. He will do best in a home with patient humans who grasp that he is a work in progress and will be well

worth the wait. Milo (DSH 1 year old) is quite the character. He was surrendered by owner because he will not stay in the house and wants to roam the neighborhood. (He is neutered and chipped.) He can be trained to be an indoor (safe at home) guy. He is incredibly sweet and affectionate but does not appreciate restraint or being picked up and held for any length of time. As such, we recommend a home without young children. Milo likes to play and is quite insistent that you pay him the homage he deserves. Inky (DSH 5 months old) is our resident Houdini! Sweet as molasses but a stinker for managing to escape his condo! He is playful, inquisitive, and affectionate, not to mention smart as a whip! Domestic cats are a social species. Yes, you can have cats that are buddies because they really like each other and not because they have to be. Kittens crave playmates, and they especially bond with their littermates. But even if you adopt kittens from separate litters, they will likely become instant besties. For most kittens, the way they learn social skills is by interacting and playing with each other. Please remember their true purrsonality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. Their condo is now their “safe place” and some struggle a bit when removed from it. That, by no means does NOT mean they aren’t sweet, loving lap cats. It means they are uncomfortable or scared. Take the time to meet each cat. There is great information on how to introduce animals into a new home at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals. org under Pets/Helpful Hints. Check it out – there are many more “Helpful Hints” for pet caregivers provided there. All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or

neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. Have you been to the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of The Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA)? It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. Donations are greatly appreciated and are accepted Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm. All proceeds go to help the homeless animals of Monroe County. Worker volunteers are always in high demand. Like us on Facebook for up to date sale information or call 423-420-3423. Would you consider becoming a foster for puppies, kittens, and adult dogs and cats? Some just need a break from shelter life, some are awaiting their turn on a rescue transport, and some just need some love. If you feel that you cannot adopt at this time, think about a short- or longterm foster situation. Call the shelter to find out more information. It’s a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

10-40 tons of trash from the river’s shorelines and its tributary creeks. “In 2019, about 700 volunteers removed 33 tons of garbage from 34 sites in Knox, Blount, Loudon, and Anderson counties,” said Bird. “A site captain’s work isn’t terribly strenuous or hard, but they determine how many sites can be cleaned up. If you have a friend, spouse, or partner, you can volunteer as co-captains, which will make it more fun.” For details about Ijams River Rescue or to volunteer to be a site captain, contact Lauren Bird at lbird@ijams. org or 865-577-4717, ext. 135. The Ijams grounds and trails are open every day from 8 am until dusk. The Visitor Center is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. jams Nature Center is looking for volunteer site captains for its 31st annual Ijams River Rescue scheduled for Saturday, March 28, from 10 am to 1 pm. “We need to add 30 additional site captains to be able to reach more areas,” said Lauren Bird, Ijams Education Administrative Coordinator. “Site captains are crucial because they keep each site running smoothly and help address any issues that arise.” A site captain’s duties range from checking in volunteers and going over safety procedures to handing out snacks and completing a brief cleanup report. There are one to two site captains at each location. These volunteers receive training prior to the event. The Human/Pet Bond

ere’s a number for you, a big number: 84.6 million. That’s approximately how many American homes have a pet of some kind. For the elderly in particular, the human/pet bond goes especially deep. As socially-active and socially-minded beings, humans in general need interpersonal contact; and if that contact is diminished for whatever reason – loss of

a partner or friend, transition to retirement – a pet can be a wonderful substitute for that companion or contact. ionship. Pets can actually lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and may even reduce direct pain. And for the senior adult, pets are wonderful companions to help offset the challenges of loneliness and depression. Just ask Parkview Senior Community resident Carole Prevett. Yes, of course she fulfills her pet Molly’s basic needs and provides affection, but what she receives in return is limitless. “When my husband died in 2006, I was all by myself and was lonely inside the house,” she said. “I needed something to move around in the home and be company to me, so I got this little white poodle named Molly. She keeps me company, and I just love her to death. I am so glad I have her. Having her makes me get out and do exercises, which we all have to do, but sometimes we don’t. She makes me get up and do my walking, so that’s a plus. The two most positive things in my life right now are Molly and Parkview, and I am so grateful for both.” Looking for a place to call home that will accommodate both you and your pet? very week for the past 10 1/2 years, Random Acts of Flowers has stayed focused and true to its mission of improving the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering re-purposed flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness. Here in Knoxville, we deliver hundreds of arrangements each week thanks to the hard work of our more than 400 dedicated volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors and committed Perennial Society members. However, we can always use more support to keep delivering hope in our community. Helping Random Acts of Flowers serve others can take many forms. To make a financial donation, you can visit our website (www.RAFKnoxville.org) and click on the “Donation” tab and make an online contribution, or you can mail a check to 3500 Workman Road, Knoxville, TN 37921. Another way to support Random Acts of Flowers is to experience the mission firsthand. Have your next private celebration or team building event here at our workshop or at your facility. These events typically include an overview on Random Acts of Flowers and its mission, followed by a demonstration on how to create beautiful flower arrangements. Then you and your team are guided through the process of creating bouquets that will be delivered to individuals in local healthcare facilities. We also have a variety of regular volunteering opportunities available, from picking up floral donations and prepping donated flowers to creating arrangements and delivering the completed bouquets. For more information on making a donation, having a Random Acts of Flowers event, or volunteering, please call us at 865-633-9082, email us at info@RAFKnoxville. org, or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org.

ou watch what you eat, you exercise regularly, but that’s simply not enough. You may have even achieved your ideal weight, but those problem areas that you’ve “targeted” remain unchanged. Sound familiar? Stubborn areas, particularly around the abdomen and flanks, can be annoyingly resistant to diet and exercise. Here’s where the revolutionary Personalized Body Sculpting system from truSculpt® 3D can help. “For a no downtime procedure, I achieved results that I was not able to get from diet and exercise.” - SG Developed by Cutera, the global pioneer in performance and innovation within the cosmetic and aesthetic laser device field, this non-invasive truSculpt® 3D procedure can help you sculpt your body by quickly and easily targeting both large and small problem areas. Using innovative monopolar radiofrequency technology, truSculpt® 3D selectively targets and eliminates fat tissue using therapeutic heat. Patients achieve an average of 24% fat reduction in as little as one treatment. truSculpting also tightens and improves skin tone. “I am so happy that I decided to do truSculpt® 3D. I have two kids and workout but have stubborn love handles. This is one area that I have the most trouble with. It was a painless treatment, and it didn’t take long at all - one hour. They treated my upper and lower flank areas. I was thrilled when I went back three months later and took my after photos. Now I don’t have that ‘muffin top’ over my pants.” - MR FDA cleared, safe, and non-invasive,

truSculpt® 3D body sculpting technology can produce visible results in as little as six to 12 weeks, with maximum benefits at 12 weeks. Some clients report seeing results in as little as four to six weeks. It is also possible to treat multiple areas in a single session, including the neck, upper arms, abdomen and flanks, back, and thighs. There is no restriction on activity following the procedure. “After delivering two children by C-section, I had fat and loose skin on my abdomen and was looking for a treatment that could address my concerns without the downtime. The truSculpt® 3D treatment was quick and easy to tolerate. Now, at 12 weeks out, I see a noticeable difference in my abdomen – my pants fit better and my skin even looks better. truSculpt® 3D is a great treatment for busy people who are looking for improvement without the downtime and headaches of surgery.” -LB truSculpt® 3D treatments are provided by Dr. Kevin Buchanan, MD, and his compassionate and caring team of healthcare professionals at their Farragut Family Practice medical facility. To learn more about the truSculpt® 3D treatments, call Ashley Burchfield at 865-675-1953, ext. 224 for more information or to schedule a free consultation or visit www.cutera.com/ trusculpt3D. A Wife’s Chronicles of a Passionate Nerd By Christina Fitzwilliam

W

hen I was in the market for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. When we are passionate about something, that “something” naturally jumps out at us. For my husband John, one of his passions is floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do too, but since we entered the deep-cleaning and restoration business 12 years ago, he notices floors. Every. Single. One. Imagine conversation starters like: “Wow, this company chose a great tile! This floor will really last!” Or “It looks as though an acid wash has destroyed the integrity of this beautiful stone.” More than once he’s approached a business owner to share some knowledge and free expertise, and a friendship is born. Sometimes I chuckle when he gets so excited about his day’s work. He often takes before/after photos of his day’s work, and when he gets home, he often whips them out, describing each one in detail. I know that it’s his passion that makes him so good at cleaning and a big reason why our clients appreciate him so much. If you are wondering if John is as passionate about other things as he is floors… the answer is yes. Whether it’s being a D&D Dungeon Master in full get-up or dressing to attend the annual Renaissance Festival, he’s ALL IN. I love my nerdy man, but I’m also happy to share him. (Business hours only!) It’s not only John’s passion that sets Surface Doc apart from other cleaning companies. The equipment his crew uses is mind-blowing all by itself. A self-contained disc uses purified water and 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction to literally blast dirt out of the pores of your floor and whisk it away. John’s knowledge and enthusiasm, partnered with the strength and precision of Surface Doc’s equipment, makes the difference, and that’s what sets Surface Doc apart from everyone else. If you’d like John and the crew to swing by your home for a no-hassle consultation, just give him a call at 865-567-1986. You can also visit Surface Doc online to see before/ after photos and streaming videos at www.SurfaceDoc.com. And if you only read this story because of the odd title, then you may have realized at this point, I may be a bit of a nerd, too! Surface Doc

he inaugural Southern Skies Music Festival, curated by hometown favorites The Dirty Guv’nahs, comes to World’s Fair Park in Knoxville on May 16. The one-day event will feature seven musical acts across two stages, food trucks, craft beer, wine, specialty cocktails, a Maker Market, and more. In addition to The Dirty Guv’nahs, the music lineup includes headliner Ben Rector, Elenowen, Sawyer, Electric Darling, Carly Bannister, and one more surprise guest to be announced soon. Festival passes are on sale at www.southernskiesmusicfestival.com. Tier 1 prices are $40 while supplies last, or go VIP for $125 with access to premium viewing area, hangout space with private bars and restrooms, festival merchandise, and more. “We’ve been dreaming up a festival event in our hometown of Knoxville for nearly a decade,” said James Trimble, Guv’s frontman. “This is the city that gave us a shot and supported our rock & roll dreams. Fourteen years later, we’re still at it. We’re still writing new songs and dreaming about how to bring people together for good through music. It is an absolute honor to work with Dogwood Arts as we officially launch Southern Skies Music Festival as an event that we intend to grow together for many years to come. We love their mission, creativity, and our shared authentic love for Knoxville. Can’t wait to see where this goes!” The Guv’s live experience has been hailed as one of the best in the southeast, and according to Music Connection Magazine, “The Dirty Guv’nahs don’t just play music; they capture the human experience through song.” Likewise, Southern Skies will capture the spirit of Knoxville and honor the Dogwood Arts mission to promote emerging local and regional musical artists. Southern Skies is produced by Dogwood Arts and is the newest addition to their music programming, which includes Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival, Open Mic Nights in the Dogwood Gallery, and musical entertainment at the Dogwood Arts Festival. Dogwood Arts is working with Born & Raised Productions, the Knoxville-based music production company behind Sunset on Central, the Outpost, and Silent Disco Knox, on this year’s festival. “Dogwood Arts is proud to introduce this one-day celebration of music, art, and community and invites everyone to experience Southern Skies in its inaugural year,” said Sherry Jenkins, Executive Director of Dogwood Arts. pring is in the air! Except when it isn’t. Temperatures are warmer than average in general, but then we get a cold snap just frigid enough to nip new growth. My daffodils have been blooming since January, my forsythia has started to open buds, and there is new growth on everything! This makes me nervous, but I have learned that nature is adaptable. There is nothing you can do other than cover things up, and it is really too early to do that. That will come next month! My main word of advice is don’t get carried away. I don’t know exactly what the weather will do, but I do know that our average last frost is early to mid-April. I have seen people plant too early way too many times, and it never works out well. There are, however, many things that you can do on pretty days: » Do a walk around. You have to know where to begin before you know where to finish. Do you have trees that need to come down? Do you have trees that have grown so that a formerly sunny area is shady? Is a formerly shady area now sunny because the lot next door has been cleared or a tree has already come down? What condition are your plants in? What condition is your soil in? What would you like to do this spring to improve your yard? » Once your plan is in place, do a good cleanup. Get fallen leaves and plant debris out of the beds and see how badly the weeds have taken over. Cut perennials back to where new growth is emerging. Pull weeds and treat the beds with Preen or another pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. Work some good compost

into the soil to add nutrients. » Mulch isn’t just for aesthetics. It also protects the plants from the freeze/thaw cycles and keeps moisture stable. Do NOT use too much, however! Three inches is optimal. NEVER pile the mulch around the base of plants or create volcanoes around trees. Your mulch should look like a flattened donut around trees and shrubs. If you already have a good base of mulch in place, give it a good raking to “fluff” it. Mulch can become very compacted and hard over the winter. » You can plant cool season annuals, perennials, and vegetables. Please do not plant warm season annuals and veggies yet because they don’t like cold soil. A tomato planted while the soil is cold will grow, but it will not bear well. Flowers will sit and pout. Roots do not go out into cold soil, so you are wasting time and money rushing the season. » Please stop pruning your plants without research. You can seriously damage them. Crepe myrtles get murdered, hydrangeas and spring bloomers don’t bloom, and trees are horribly deformed by homeowners (and some bad “landscapers”) who have no idea what they are doing. It is also important to have sharp tools. Would you want a surgeon to operate on you with a dull knife? » Houseplants are ready for some TLC this time of year. Clean them up, check for problems, and up-pot if necessary. Don’t go too big! One pot size is enough. Use the best potting soil you can afford, because that will be what your plant lives on. Cheap dirt is like a junk food diet: It isn’t good for long term survival. » This is a good time to get your con-

tainers ready for the spring. You can dump the soil from small pots into your garden beds and work it in. Some pots may just need a quick rinse, and some may need a thorough scrubbing. If you had a fungal problem with the plants that were in the pot, rinse it with a mild bleach solution. If there are white lines on your pot, it is an indicator that you have been a bit overzealous with your fertilizing and salts are building up, so you need to scrub those off. If your containers are large, you don’t need to dump the entire thing out every year. If there are trees, shrubs, or perennials planted in them, you can top dress with compost. If you do seasonal planting, replace the top

6”-12” with fresh soil. If you have had problems with fungus or insects, however, you may want to start all over. Both can hide out in your soil and re-infect new plants. I’ll finish up this month with a reminder to take care of our feathered friends. Keep your feeders clean and full, keep birdbaths clean and full, and protect the birdhouses. We are getting shipments in on a daily basis right now, so stop in and see what’s new! Rethink Your Garage Flooring

G

one are the days of a dirty, oil-stained, and cracked garage floor. Today’s garage floor coatings leave the garage looking like a true extension of your home. Garage floors have a hard life. They are subject to constant pressure from the car and hot tires as you drive over them, as well as temperature extremes and abuse from oil drips and substances brought in on your tires. As a result, the concrete often ends up cracking and crumbling. There are a few flooring options to protect your concrete; however, not all floor coatings are created equal. The decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, devel-

oped and installed by PremierGarage. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” Polyurea flooring systems present the most-advanced, fast-curing, and hardening system in concrete flooring technology. It withstands more abuse and impact than any traditional epoxy coating. It also provides better protection against harmful agents like oils, chemicals, and gas,

and it doesn’t stain, crack, or peel. PremierGarage’s polyurea floor coating will look new for years to come. While do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with, the down side is many things can go wrong when applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface and peel it away from the concrete. For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating instead of epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage! UT Gardens Plant of the Month: Euphorbia

uphorbia, often called spurge, belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, a very diverse group of flowering plants with more than 2,100 species. The genus is represented all around the world and can vary dramatically in appearance, with some species having

forms that look like small cacti and others that become large, long-lived trees. In Tennessee, several herbaceous euphorbias are perennials. Historically, the milky latex often found in the stems of euphorbias has been used in traditional medicine to treat skin ulcers, warts, and intestinal parasites. However, protective gloves should be worn while handling spurge, as the latex can sometimes be an ex-

treme irritant to the skin and eyes. Several species and cultivated varieties are listed below. These are available to gardeners and are valued for their year-round foliage color and unique flower interest. Varying climates across the state can affect durability, so be sure to check with the UT Gardens site in your region to see which specific varieties have performed well in your area. E. corollata is native to the United States and can be seen growing along our roadsides. This underutilized native is grown more for the baby’s breath-like blooms that start in late summer and continue into early fall. While not as cultivated as other species, the ‘Carolina Snow’ selection boasts showy blooms, proving why this tough native is worthy of a spot in the garden. Both E. amygdaloides and E. characias are native to Europe, and both species, as well as hybrids between the two, are largely responsible for the cultivars available today. E. x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow’ is highly sought after and for good reason. This hybrid features variegated foliage in shades of greens and yellows, with new emerging foliage tinged with red hues. Foliage also has red and orange hues during fall and winter months. E. characias ‘Tasmanian Tiger’ is another popular cultivar, with green leaves and striking white variegation. When viewing from a distance, this cultivar almost looks completely white to silver. E. amygdaloides ‘Waleuphglo’, also sold as E. amygdaloides ‘Ruby Glow’, is a wonderful selection that has bright ruby red spring foliage that matures to a dark purple-black color and has a more compact habit than other cultivars. These ranges of color make euphorbia fun to pair with other annuals and perennials for striking color combinations. While these cultivars look wonderful during spring and summer, their evergreen foliage is outstanding during dreary months. Flowers appear during late spring and into early summer with each stem topped by a thick, bottlebrush-like inflorescence. Bloom colors range from shades of yellows to greens and should be removed once spent to avoid reseeding. Their size typically ranges from one to three feet tall and wide, making these perfect to tuck into mixed borders, rock gardens, and containers. Spurge likes to be planted in full sun and in very welldrained soils. They will tolerate a little shade but tend to get leggy and look unkempt. Once established, they are fairly drought tolerant but appreciate moisture during the hot summer months. Along with being a fuss-free addition to the garden, they are also deer resistant. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, we have E. amygdaloides ‘Waleuphglo’ featured in containers around our Children’s Garden and E. x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow’ surrounded by mixed perennials in our popular truck bed. UT Gardens, Crossville also has Waleuphglo located near the flag pole in the Americana Garden. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

The Best Home Underdecking System Available Anywhere – Period! By Jim Conn, Owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee

by promoting the free circulation of air that aides in the drying of your deck’s support joists. All we install is Undercover Systems’ patented decking systems. We are not remodeling contractors installing windows today, cabinets tomorrow, and siding the day after. All of our installers are factory trained and certified. I think that what our clients appreciate most is that I, Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems of Tennessee, personally supervise each and every installation. In fact, I often help install our patented underdecking system as well. If you have ever considered installing an underdeck system under your home’s raised deck, I invite you to discover why Undercover Systems is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and why we have received the much coveted Consumers’ Choice Award and Green Business Certification. Available in a variety of color options and our premium bead board design, discover how you can better enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces all year-round by protecting your family from unexpected rain and the searing sun with Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system.

e frequently receive inquiries from homeowners who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. I think it’s the appealing aesthetics that first catches their eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from. That’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase generic “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-theart manufacturing facility specifically for your project. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge generic aluminum substitute. Our patented system does not attach itself to the underside of your deck. Our system is fully supported by our gutter system that is installed along the perimeter of your raised deck. This protects your deck

re you starting to anticipate retirement with its less pressure-packed days and no alarm clock? You may have a dollar amount, age, or career milestone in mind that’s associated with your retirement date. But... before you leave your profession, money, and lifestyle, don’t let these three critical need-to-know items catch you by surprise. 1. If the stock market corrects in the first few years of your retirement, it will have a lasting negative effect on how much income you can withdraw over your lifetime and how long your money will last. It’s called a “negative sequence of returns,” and people who retired in 2007, ahead of the bear market 2008, can attest to its power. 2. For an age 65 couple, there is a 50% chance that one of you will live to age 91 and a 30% chance that one of you will live to age 95. Your money needs to last a long time in retirement. 3. Healthcare will cost more than you might anticipate. A Fidelity study estimated that retirees spend 15% of their income on healthcare costs, excluding long-term care costs. Healthcare is the number one thing that my retired clients acknowledge they underestimated. We are hosting two complimentary workshops where we will share important ways to prepare yourself ahead of time so you can enter retirement feeling in control of your money and life. At our workshops, we will answer important questions like: » How can I structure my portfolio now to limit the impact of a market downturn in my early retirement years? » What kind of preparation can I do now that will make sure I have enough cash flow to live the lifestyle I want? » What kind of simple long-term care options should I consider so I don’t have to worry if my spouse or I have any health problems? » What kind of preparation can I do now that will make sure I have enough cash flow to live the lifestyle I want? » What “draw down” strategy would work best for minimizing my taxes? Together, with the team at Marsh Wealth, we can help you create a comfortable and secure retirement!
