Biltmore Looks Ahead to 2021 with Favorite Seasonal Activities and New Experiences 2021 Calendar of Events

B

iltmore continues to safely welcome guests to its 8,000-acre estate in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville and will boast a range of favorite seasonal events along with several new experiences in 2021. A large-scale stick sculpture exhibition featuring tree saplings weaved into whirling animated shapes, a whimsical model train display traversing tropical plants, and new outdoor activities encouraging wellness are in store for the New Year at Biltmore. Biltmore continues to maintain a Health and Safety section on Biltmore.com with the latest COVID-19 updates and mandates. Planned events and activities

this year will comply with requirements to reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19, as the safety of employees and guests is always Biltmore’s highest priority. Biltmore will continue to closely monitor the course of COVID-19 and guests are encouraged to check Biltmore. com for updates prior to planning a visit.

New this Winter

Wellness experiences that connect guests with nature have been added to Biltmore’s slate of outdoor activities. A variety of hikes led by subject matter experts on topics such as wildlife, mindfulness, and trees & forestry are newly available. Winter bird watch sessions are a free and fun opportunity for guests to participate in an important research project to count and identify birds at the estate’s winter feeding station. Nature games like National Park Monopoly and puzzles led by the Outdoor Adventure Center guide team are perfect for families. Guests should contact the estate’s Outdoor Adventure Center to book activities and find out more about

the estate’s full outdoor offerings such as biking, falconry, horseback trail rides, carriage rides, float trips along the French Broad River and more.

Coming this Spring

Guests visiting Biltmore this spring will be lucky to witness an entirely new outdoor sculpture exhibition built by self-described

“stick sculpture artist,” Patrick Dougherty. Raised in North Carolina, Dougherty is a sculptor known worldwide who weaves tree saplings into sculptural installations. Dougherty’s interest in carpentry and love of nature inspired him to experiment with Continued on page 2A ...

tree saplings and learn about building techniques. Guests can view Stickworks Outdoor Sculptures at Biltmore beginning April 1. Back by popular demand, Biltmore Gardens Railway brings a large-scale model railroad and handmade buildings to the Conservatory. Running April 1 through Sept. 26, G-scale locomotives and railcars move along tracks placed around notable estate replicas, traversing bridges and trestles on varied levels in multiple rooms and weaving through the estate’s renowned collection of exotic botanicals. Here is the complete 2021 Biltmore Calendar of Events.

Opening April 1: Stickworks Outdoor Sculptures

Unique outdoor sculptural works by environmental artist Patrick Dougherty, known as “Stick Man,” will reside in Antler Hill Village starting April 1. Renowned worldwide for his monumental creations, Dougherty weaves saplings and branches into intricate artworks, fashioning whimsical forms ranging from gigantic snares and cocoons to sculptural interpretations of notable buildings. The visual appeal of these large scale artworks may be appreciated up close as guests are encouraged to walk through and around the creations, affording the opportunity to admire the artistry and technical skills required to make the sculptures. The installation opens April 1, and is included in Biltmore daytime admission and Biltmore Annual Passes.

April 1 through Sept. 26: Biltmore Gardens Railway in the Conservatory

Biltmore Gardens Railway in the Conservatory pays

homage to Biltmore’s founder George Vanderbilt, who was born into a well-known railroad family. His grandfather Cornelius “Commodore” Vanderbilt spent his life building an empire based on shipping and railroad concerns. Hundreds of feet of track carry G-scale locomotives and railcars through multiple rooms in Biltmore’s Conservatory, and weave through exotic botanicals and miniature replicas of estate landmarks. Created by Applied Imagination, an award-winning crew of artists, botanical experts, and landscape designers known for exhibitions at the New York Botanical Garden and the United States Botanic Garden in Washington, D.C., the exhibition in the Conservatory is a nostalgic delight.

April 1 through May 27: Biltmore Blooms

A progression of flowers blankets George Vanderbilt’s estate in color during Biltmore Blooms, an annual tradition that has delighted guests for many decades. Highlighted by thousands of tulips in the historic Walled Garden and across the estate, Biltmore Blooms honors the legacy of landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted and his accomplishments at Biltmore. Azaleas, rhododendrons, and mountain laurel bloom later in the season, with buds of every shade appearing in the Rose Garden. Stunning floral arrangements will fill the rooms of Biltmore House, featuring flowers and greenery gathered from estate grounds.

April 4: Easter Egg Hunt

The Easter Rabbit makes an annual appearance on Biltmore’s Front Lawn on Easter Sunday. Highlighting the day are the grand Easter Egg Hunts. Children ages 9 and younger may attend the hunt for free when accompanied

by an estate pass holder or a ticketed adult.

July through Aug. on select evenings: Biltmore Concert Series

Biltmore House and the Blue Ridge Mountains serve as backdrop for musical experiences during Biltmore’s annual concert series. Concerts take place on the South Terrace of Biltmore House. The concert line-up will be announced in spring 2021.

Nov. 5, 2021 through Jan. 9, 2022: 47th Annual Christmas at Biltmore

Holidays arrive at America’s largest home in style. More than a century ago, George Vanderbilt chose the holiday season as the time to unveil his new home to family and friends. This year’s Christmas at Biltmore promises another extravagant celebration, complete with dozens of Christmas trees, miles of ribbon, garland and lights. Festive menus in estate restaurants and holiday wine tastings make for a memorable visit.

Nov. 5, 2021 through Jan. 8, 2022: 38th Annual Candlelight Evenings at Biltmore Estate

Candlelight, firelight and live music bring holiday warmth to Biltmore House’s extravagant holiday décor during these nighttime tours. Candlelight Christmas Evenings include a self-guided candlelight tour of Biltmore House, next-day visit to the gardens, Antler Hill Village and Biltmore Winery. Evening guests can also take advantage of Antler Hill Village & Winery to enjoy free wine tastings. More information about these events, and how to purchase tickets, is available at Biltmore.com or by calling (800) 411-3812.

March Highlights

From the Publisher

pring is the season when we focus on our home’s interior and exterior, as well as landscaping and garden areas. It’s time to do a thorough house cleaning with organization of closets and storage areas and also time to set our clocks ahead an hour as Daylight Saving starts on Sunday, March 14th. Windows need washing, carpets require cleaning, walls could use painting, and I am sure you have a variety of household repairs that have been waiting for attention. Plus, during the winter, our garages, outdoor storage areas, and decks have been neglected. With the warmer weather, we become more motivated to attend to all those chores we’ve placed on our spring “to do” lists. And this month, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views focuses on the home and home improvements and enhancements all meant to get you motivated to eliminate those chores on your list. You’ll find services for your home, landscape, garage and even your boat. We have it all in this edition. Spring is all too short here in East Tennessee, so make the most of the milder weather and maximize your time outdoors. All the resources are in this edition to help you find the products and services you need to make outdoor living and spring spruce up enjoyable.

Heritage Family Dentistry

Care Beyond Compare

“I

believe I was one of his first patients,” said Virginia Curtis, Loudon native and former entrepreneur of 32 years, when referring to Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS, founder of Heritage Family Dentistry in Farragut. “The office staff is extremely nice and always ready with a cup of coffee, warm compress for my neck, lots of fun and laughs, and anything else I might need.” Recently Dr. Bradshaw replaced Virginia’s lower denture with implants.

The Clear Alternative to Braces

“I never have issues eating, and the convenience is a major factor as well. Dr. Bradshaw did a beautiful job.”

“They stay in place,” she said. “I never have issues eating, and the convenience is a major factor as well. Dr. Bradshaw did a beautiful job. I’ve had no pain and zero issues. He explained everything so thoroughly; I just didn’t worry about a thing. They look incredible, and I’ve received many compliments on my smile and teeth. Honestly, most people don’t even know they are implants.” But Virginia has other reasons to appreciate the caring and compassionate team at Heritage Family Dentistry. “I have multiple myeloma, and Dr. Bradshaw has prayed with and for me, given countless hugs, and even sent flowers during a rough chemo time,” said Virginia. “Not many people can say they have been pampered and comforted by their dentist. “I never hesitate to recommend Dr. Bradshaw. My entire family, including my late husband of 54 years, Allen, my children Tammy and Tim, their spouses Reid and Amy, my five grandchildren Jacob, Macey, Emma, Aly, and Will, and many friends are now his patients. I truly know they will receive the best care in Knoxville… well, anywhere.” Heritage Family Dentistry 11121 Kingston Pike, Suite C Farragut, TN 37934 865-816-9211 www.hfdsmiles.com

A Once in a Lifetime Pension Decision By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

A

widow sat across the desk from me as we discussed the financial implications of her husband’s unexpected passing at age 67. She told me that her husband had chosen a “single life” pension since it was the largest monthly payment and so, at his passing, his pension stopped, cutting her income in half. In another real–life scenario, a gentleman retired in 2007 and rolled his lump sum pension into an IRA invested in the markets. Along came 2008 when, in the panic of losing almost 40%, he sold out of his holdings and forever changed his and his wife’s retirement years. You get the idea – deciding how to take your pension

benefits is one of the most important decisions you will make, and it’s irrevocable once you decide. Here are some tips to make it easier. Ask your HR department for ALL of your options, and take the time to understand them. If you are married, weigh the joint-life survivor benefits payout options of 50% versus 100%. While the 50% survivor benefit will be temptingly bigger than the 100% survivor benefit, remember that your household will lose a Social Security check at your passing. The continued 100% pension payment can make the difference between a comfortable or meager retirement for the survivor.

Importantly, ask if your pension will have a cost-ofliving adjustment, to keep up with rising costs. According to the Genworth Cost of Care Calculator, the one-hour rate for a Knox County Home Health Aide in 2020 was $24/hour. In 2040, it’s projected to be $43.35/hour. You need income that can keep pace with inflation. If you’re not happy with your options, shop your lump sum pension around and see what kind of guaranteed payouts, increasing income options and death benefits a highly-rated insurance company can offer. You can rollover your lump sum into an IRA insurance annuity without triggering any tax. For employees who worry whether their employer is in good enough financial health to pay their lifetime pension, this can be a great alternative. If it feels a bit overwhelming, we can help you weigh your choices and find a solution that fits you and your family – just give us a call to chat. Then you can relax and enjoy the retirement lifestyle you’ve worked so hard for! The 2021 Boating Season is Just Around the Corner

T

By Tom Irmen

he 2021 boating season is about to get underway and so is the season of endless boat detailing if you don’t own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. But it wasn’t until multiple boat owners on our community dock in Rarity Bay installed the Touchless Boat Cover that we made the decision to make the investment by redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Previously when we arrived at our dock for a day on the lake, we had to first clear away the cobwebs from the sides of our boat. Then we removed the straps that secured our boat cover and then removed the cover. We shook the cover off to shake off the spiders that remained before folding the cover and placing it in our dock box. We would wash the bird and spider droppings off the cover when we returned. Before we had started to wipe the cobwebs and spider droppings from the now exposed topside areas of our boat, the boat owners in the slip across from ours arrived.

They pressed their key fob; their Touchless Cover was fully raised in 30 seconds or less. They lowered their boat lift, started their outboard engine and were off in 5 minutes or less. On a recent outing on the lake, we pressed our key fob. While our Touchless Cover was rising, we lowered our boat lift. We turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. And yes, we’re using our boat far more than before. And the spiders? I can’t explain it. They’ve mostly disappeared. And our newly detailed boat looks just like

it did on the showroom floor in 2007. Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today. Lifetime Docks, LLC 144 Industrial Parkway Jacksboro, TN 37757 423-566-7401 865-719-0027 (Cell) www.lifetimedockstn.com www.touchlesscover.com

A Congregation’s Lessons From the Pandemic

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, March, 2021

ll individuals and institutions have faced challenges in dealing with the effects of the pandemic. For religious institutions, requirements to shelter in place, limit the size of assemblies and observe social distancing strike at the core of their purpose and practice. “Congregation” is both the identity and activity of members of a religious community. Members demonstrate their commitment to their community by showing up - most frequently for common worship experience. When that experience is taken away, what do you have? That’s the question congregations wrestled with this past year. Most found solutions that allowed them to preserve a sense of community if only in a synthetic way. In the majority of cases those solutions were based on using technology that, while readily available, was totally unfamiliar to most everyone involved. Our experience at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church was likely representative of most congregations. When the initial Covid mandates were pronounced, we resolved to reach out to our members “virtually.” We would make our members “streamers”, “You Tubers” and “Zoomers.” We formed a team of the avid and inexperienced to lead the effort. Early returns were, at times, comical, though we did not think so at the time. Worship services were streamed without sound, not streamed at all when scheduled or streamed with modulations in volume that had home-viewing worshippers reaching repeatedly for their remotes. Our members

ground level have done remarkably well. Enthusiasm and commitment to mission has triumphed over reticence and unfamiliarity. Importantly, at Shepherd of the Lake, our members have envisioned new possibilities well beyond the current stopgap use of the technology. This has led us to invest in better equipment and training even before fully articulating what form those possibilities will take. These new tools of ministry have made us eager to expand their use in serving members of our existing congregation and in expanding our virtual congregation. They will never replace the in-person experience

of being a congregation. In fact, we anticipate that these social contact innovations will facilitate more frequent mission-driven in-person contact. Our Mission Statement defines us a “Christian community sharing God’s love with the world. “ In these times we approach that mission with new capability and confidence in sharing a message that is for all times. Listen were patient. We got better. Our services stabilized and our “attendance” exceeded early expectations. In a very short time we were holding all our meetings, Bible studies and fellowship gatherings via Zoom. The work of the church continued, though from the start, we have felt the sense of loss that comes from our inability to congregate as usual. None of us know when and how “as usual” will make its reappearance. At present we can say that the outlook is good. We can also say that we have learned a great deal from our recent experience. From what we have observed of ours and other congregations, people at the

R

osetta is a 1 year, 8 month old spayed female Pit Mix. She came into the shelter back in October, so it is time for her to find a home! She loves attention, jumps in your lap, she’s good with kids, but not with cats. She would make a perfect family pet. Imagine Rosetta and her new little humans running around the backyard making everyone tired! Win-win! Bridget came into the shelter in January as a stray. She is a beautiful, 3-yearold, spayed, 59 pound, mixed breed dog that is heart-worm positive, but is being treated. She is curious and happy. Bridget should be adopted by a family that does not have cats as she chases them. She loves walks and would do well in a home with active children. Bridget also loves to snuggle on the couch. When coming to the Shelter to meet a dog, please remember their true personality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. They may

consider their kennel a safe place and be uncomfortable when taken out. This doesn’t mean they aren’t sweet, loving dogs. It just means they are unsure or scared in this environment. Take some time to meet each dog, let them get used to you for a few moments before you take him/ her for a walk around the shelter grounds. Once you get your new pet home, allow them time to become adjusted to their new life. Dawkins is a very friendly and very vocal 2-year-old Long Hair cat. When he came in, his coat was coarse, rough, and dull. He’s been enjoying the perks of inside living so we are starting to see major changes in his appearance that comes with safety, security, and regular feedings. He loves to greet everyone who visits and is always eager for a good conversation. Dawkins loves to be stroked down his back and would awake from a coma if he heard the pop top of a food can. He has acclimated well to a fully indoor life but would really appreciate access to a secure, screened-in porch or patio. Diggs is a curious little 2-year-old, black short hair with a cute bobtail. He tends to watch and analyze the world before committing to an action. He is friendly but cautious. Diggs likes to be petted but can get antsy when held. He has the most adorable stub tail that has not affected his litter box habits in any way. He is young and may still have a bit of kitten in him so an indoor home that would like playtime with an active kitty is best. Miss Neve is the epitome of beauty. She is a 2-year-old Siamese mix (possibly an albino). Her coat is like newly fallen snow. Her eyes are like blue topaz. She is the perfect blend of beauty, sweetness, and goofiness. Neve will speak soft words of meow in search of caresses and while

you are stroking her soft fur, so relaxed, she will fall off her shelf, shake her head, and pretend that it was all in your imagination. Neve has such a light complexion that she absolutely MUST be an indoor only companion. All adoptions include spay/neuter, age appropriate testing and vaccinations (including Rabies), worming, and microchip (including registration). Cats are litter box trained. Microchips ($10) may be purchased by the public during shelter hours. THE THRIFT STORE IS REOPENING! Shopping days are Friday - 2/19 and Saturday - 2/20, 10am - 2pm and Friday - 2/26 and Saturday - 2/27, 10am - 2pm. All clothing will be 50% off. We have some beautiful clothes for everyone. All four days! In March we hope to go back to our regular schedule of Wednesday - Saturday from 10am to 4pm. We look forward to seeing all of our customers. We have missed you all. MASKS REQUIRED. Stay safe. We need your help at the shelter! If you can help clean, feed, walk dogs and/or do laundry, please consider volunteering. Shelter Staff or other volunteers will be happy to train you. Assistance is particularly needed in the morning when the Shelter Staff is getting the shelter ready to open to the public. A few hours a day, a couple days a week will really help!!! Would you consider becoming a foster for puppies, kittens, or adult dogs and cats? Some just need a break from shelter life, some are awaiting their turn on a rescue transport, and some just need some love. For more information, look under Fostering on our website, www. s vaccinations are on the rise and cases on the decline, we appear to be in the waning months of The COVID crisis. That said it has now become difficult to find someone that has not had at least a friend or a family member stricken with The COVID. Our own Salon is no longer an exception as we have now had our

Community Center to Act as Haven, Incubator for Services to the Lakeway Immigrants

OLA Lakeway is proud to announce it is launching the Sankofa Center. The center will act as a permanent home for HOLA Lakeway and its programs and as well a community center and nonprofit incubator. The Sankofa Center is located at 1045 South Cumberland Street in Morristown and is now open to the public on a limited basis. Members of the public can tour the center by appointment. For details on how to schedule an appointment, please see HOLALakeway.org or visit HOLA’s Facebook page. As part of the Launch festivities HOLA Lakeway is asking artists to submit their ideas for an artistic logo to

represent the center. “The launch of the Sankofa Center is a natural progression of HOLA Lakeway’s growth and development since we founded it” said Willie Santana, past chairman and co-founder of the organization. KC Alvarado, co-founder and chair of the board adds, “The doors opened to HOLA and the people it serves by the Sankofa Center are endless. Our current programs, like the Language Institute, will be improved by a permanent location but there’s no telling what opportunities to further our mission will come from the collaboration in the [planned] nonprofit incubator.”

“We have been very fortunate to have had incredible partners in the past that shared their space with us,” added Betsy Hurst. “But the challenges posed by the COVID-19 Pandemic made it clear we needed our own space. We prayed and planned and our prayers were answered in the generosity of donors from the community.” HOLA Lakeway succeeded the Latino Task Force of Morristown in 2014. In 2018 the organization began to see a growth in the community of immigrant families from other parts of the world like India, Micronesia, and Pakistan, and decided to expand its efforts to serve all immigrants in the community.

Today, HOLA Lakeway is a grassroots, community-based organization with the mission of meeting needs and improving the overall quality of life for the immigrant population in East Tennessee’s Lakeway region. HOLA Lakeway offers various educational programs, such as English and Spanish classes but is also actively involved in a variety of grassroots projects such as coordinating with the COVID-19 Task Force and Hamblen County’s Complete Count Committee. For additional information, or to volunteer or contribute to HOLA Lakeway’s activities, you can go to holalakeway.org or call 423-621-9065.

We will be hosting a Joseph Ribkoff trunk show featuring both summer and early fall designs for you to view and order for yourself! Our Ribkoff representative will be in store on Thursday, March 25, from 10 am to 5:30 pm and Friday, March 26, from 10 am to 2 pm. Ijams River Rescue Needs Volunteer Site Captains for Annual Cleanup March 27

jams Nature Center is looking for volunteer site captains for its 32nd annual Ijams River Rescue, presented by TVA, on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.Ijams River Rescue annually brings together 500-800 volunteers to remove between 10-40 tons of trash from the Tennessee River’s shorelines and its tributary creeks. “Site captains are critical to this event because they determine how many sites can be addressed,” Ijams Volunteer Coordinator Madelyn Collins said. “If you have a friend, spouse or partner, you can volunteer as co-captains, which will make it more fun.”

A site captain’s duties range from checking in volunteers and going over safety procedures to completing a brief cleanup report. There are one to two site captains at each location. These volunteers receive training prior to the event. In 2020, 500 volunteers safely removed 12.6 tons of garbage from 32 sites. “There was so much uncertainty about the pandemic in early 2020 that Ijams rescheduled the cleanup from March to November.” Collins said. “As we learned more about safety protocols, we discovered that cleanups are a great way to give back, get active and stay safe because you can be outside and

physically distance from everyone around you. While it’s only been six months since the cleanup, there’s a lot of trash out there, so there’s still work to do.” For details about Ijams River Rescue or to volunteer to be a site captain, contact Madelyn Collins at mcollins@ijams.org or 865-577-4717, ext. 135. A general call for cleanup volunteers will go out in March. Sponsors to date include TVA, City of Knoxville Stormwater Engineering, First Horizon Foundation and Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. Sponsorships still are available. For sponsorship information, email Cindy Hassil at chassil@ijams.org.

Ijams Nature Center is a nonprofit, 315-acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities and walks of life. Ijams’ mission is to encourage stewardship of the natural world by providing an urban greenspace for people to learn about and enjoy the outdoors through engaging experiences. Located just three miles from downtown Knoxville, Ijams features 12 miles of hiking and mixed-use trails, a public access river dock, swimming, boating, biking and more. The center offers hundreds of educational programs annually for all ages. The Ijams grounds and trails are open every day from 8 a.m. until dusk. The Visitor Center is open daily from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. For more information, visit Ijams.org.

10 years!

Luckily, spring is right around the corner! Our surroundings influence our moods, and color is proven to be one of those influences. After all of the winter greys and neutrals, bright spring colors are a welcome addition!

Don’t Sacrifice Form for Function

Your desk, shelves and storage should serve you, not the other way around. Consider your workflow and what items you need at your fingertips. While a basic office desk from a big-box store may be inexpensive, it probably won’t fit your needs. A custom home office doesn’t have to be expensive, just designed for your needs to enhance productivity.

One of the many factors we consider when designing a home is color theory, and we combine that with your personal preferences for a curated color palette.

Invest in a Great Chair

You spend hours sitting in your office chair; an ergonomically correct, comfortable seat is worth every dime!

Since it's March let's consider green. All greens are rooted in nature, and bring a touch of the outdoors in. However, colors change a space a little differently based on their shades and tints. A bright kelly green will feel bold and energetic, but a soft mint green, feels relaxing and calming.

Master Your Technology

Hide unsightly cords. Start by making sure your equipment is close to outlets and easy to access. Feed the cords into a desk grommet that helps guide cords through a hole in the desk and hides them underneath. Tame the cord jungle on the floor with cord winders, tubing or a wire organizer.

Let There Be Light

The bedroom on the right utilizes both of these colors with a bright pink to create a upbeat and vibrant space, that still promotes restful sleep.

Cut down on eyestrain and headaches by making sure you have plenty of light. Also, plan the position of the computer monitor so there’s no glare from a window or overhead light. No matter the size of your office, call Tailored Living of Knoxville to give you a design that maximizes your storage space and budget!

hen you started working from home last March, more than likely you didn’t put much thought into where you did your work. You probably thought it was only temporary. It wasn’t. Here we are more than year after the COVID pandemic changed so many aspects of our daily lives, especially working from home. The makeshift home offices we created that involved working on the laptop from the bed or flipping through files on the living room sofa are no longer acceptable. That’s why in 2021, and beyond, home offices will be more important than ever. Approximately 40% of Americans are now working from home fulltime. In fact, many Americans want to continue working from home even after the pandemic ends. So one of today’s top home trends is adding a home office or renovating an existing space in the house to work. “As people continue to work from home they don’t want to hold Zoom meetings or answer calls from the kitchen table,” explained Kathryn Norton, a co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Our customers want to develop a work space that will maximize their concentration, motivation and productivity. However, having an office at home doesn’t need to be extravagant. With the right design, an extra bedroom, a closet, quiet corner or loft can all be used to fill this need.” No matter where you choose to put your new home office, there are some important aspects to consider.

re you ready to let the great out-ofdoors in? The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here and with it will come the endless possibilities to enjoy your home’s backyard experience. In East Tennessee, homeowners are creating more and more outdoor living spaces yet are you really enjoying your new spaces to their full potential? In many parts of the country, if your outdoor space does not include retractable screen solutions, then the answer is most likely no. And here’s why. Homeowners are increasingly adding outdoor “rooms,” such as porches and lanais with kitchens, complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from fully enjoying their new outdoor spaces. Retractable screens provide a solution to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy being outdoors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios in areas where there are lots of biting insects that can spoil your family’s evening events.

Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. The best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of today’s retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity are different custom colors and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens with your home’s existing interior or exterior color schemes. Your screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are required. For more information about how to begin enjoying your home’s outdoor living areas to their fullest potential, call 865-919-1615 or visit www.tennesseescreens.com. INTRODUCING J. Kevin Buchanan, MD

A NEW DIMENSION IN BODY SCULPTING

Y

ou’re watching what you eat, you’re staying active, but you’re still unhappy with your body shape. Sound familiar? That stubborn problem area on your waistline can be annoyingly resistant to diet and exercise. That’s where the truSculpt® 3D procedure can help. Developed by Cutera, the global pioneer in performance and innovation within the cosmetic and aesthetic laser device field, the non-invasive, truSculpt® 3D procedure can help you sculpt your body by quickly and easily targeting both large and small problem areas. We recently interviewed J. Kevin Buchanan, MD, Knoxville area’s family practice physician and truSculpt® 3D practitioner, to discover just how this revolutionary, new, state-of-the-art medical breakthrough can help patients treat those problem areas around their midsections. MV: Dr. Buchanan, truSculpt® 3D uses radio frequency technology to help decrease circumference and diminish fat in patients. Tell our readers just how this technology works. Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D uses conductive radio frequency to achieve selective and effective disruption of the subcutaneous fat tissue, the fat that lies directly beneath the skin, while maintaining comfortable surface temperatures. MV: Just how safe is truSculpt® 3D? Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D, which is FDA cleared, is a safe, non-invasive body sculpting technology, where the temperature of the skin and subcutaneous tissue are maintained at comfortable levels while consistently achieving the best results. MV: How quickly will clients see visible results? Dr. Buchanan: Visible results can usually be seen as soon 6 to 12 weeks, with maximum benefits at 12 weeks. Some clients report seeing results in as little as 4 to 6 weeks.

MV: How much fat thickness reduction will patients experience? Dr. Buchanan: Clients can expect fat reduction of targeted areas of up to 24%. MV: Is it possible to treat more than one problem area per session? Dr. Buchanan: Yes, it is possible to treat multiple areas in a single session, including the neck, upper arms, abdomen and flanks, back, and thighs. MV: Should clients experience any discomfort or downtime after the procedure? Dr. Buchanan: Some clients may experience some redness of the skin that typically resolves itself in 8 to 12 hours. Others report soreness of the treatment area that may last for a few days. There is no restriction on activity following the procedure. MV: Treatments are administered by an NP or medical assistant under your personal supervision, correct? Is the Caller Really From the IRS?

he Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans experience some form of identity theft each year. It is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. These alarming statistics demonstrate that identity theft may be the most costly and prevalent crime in the United States. One identity theft scam that increases this time of year is the phone call where the caller claims to be from the IRS and they need to obtain some of your personal information. They may state that your IRS refund is being delayed due to some incomplete information needed to process your tax return or “click here to get your stimulus payment.” They will request personal data such as your date of birth, social security number or your banking information. Everything they need to steal your identity and maybe even gain access to your checking account. Another way they attempt to obtain your information is to send you an email or text message. Such emails or text will look very official and will attempt to entice you to click on a link, or respond to the text with your personal information. If it is an email and you click on the link, spyware is often loaded onto your computer allowing the scammer to gain access to your computer. Some Phishing scams turn out to be ransomware schemes in which the cyber-thief gains control of your computer and holds data hostage until a ransom is paid. They can change passwords, see your key strokes allowing them access to your passwords, usernames and financial data. Once the thieves obtain your personal data, they can obtain a fraudulent driver’s license, apply for loans, file fraudulent tax returns and obtain huge refunds in your

name and remove money from your checking and investment accounts. The emails, text messages and phone calls can be very convincing. The caller ID often shows the IRS or U.S. Treasury. Emails will often have the official seals and will be images of the real website. Text messages will look as if they are coming from the government. All designed to convince you that it is official. Other methods thieves use to obtain this information are Skimming – using a special device when your credit/ debit card is processed; Phishing – an email pretending to be your financial institution or companies to persuade you to reveal your personal information; Change of Address – completing a change of address request to receive your mail. What can you do to prevent Identity Theft? DO NOT GIVE your personal information over the phone, mail or internet (especially if you get a call and you did not initiate the contact). Ask questions for verification. Rather than give them your personal information, ask them to tell you the information and you can verify it. For example, if it is your bank, they should already know your account number. Ask them to provide it to you and you can confirm it. Shred all your documents that contain your personal data. Do not just throw your bank statements, account statements, and other documents that contain your personal data in the trash without rendering the documents unreadable. When using the Internet, create hard to guess passwords, install anti-virus software and keep it up to date. Do not submit social security numbers or credit card in-

formation on websites that do not use encryption. Avoid using computers in public areas such as libraries, internet cafés. Place alerts on your credit cards to notify when your card is used to make a purchase. Take precautions at ATM machines or in check-out lanes to make sure no one can see your PIN. The IRS will not call you, text you or send you an email requesting your personal data. If you think it may be a valid contact, hang up and call the number on the back of your credit card or a phone number from your records rather than the number they provide you or the number they called from. If you think you have been scammed you should immediately contact your bank, credit card companies and notify them of the breach or potential breach and put a freeze on your accounts. Contact the IRS if you feel it may involve your taxes. File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. They maintain a data base of identity theft cases. You can file a form with the IRS who will issue you a special PIN to use when filing your tax return. Use a monitoring program such as LifeLock to notify you if your personal information is being used without your knowledge. Basically, every business and individual is vulnerable to attack when it comes to your personal information and data. Take steps to protect your personal information and be alert to the deceptive ways thieves are using to steal your data. The professionals at WarrenJackson can assist you if you feel your tax return or personal data may have been violated by a scammer. Call us if we can assist you.

Reme Halo Air Purification System Reduce Viruses, Including Covid-19, By Up To 99.9%

R

GF Environmental Group Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida, has a 35+ year history of providing the world with the safest air, water and food without the use of chemicals. RGF manufactures over 500 environmental products on its 9 acre campus, home to over 130,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Perhaps RGF’s most exciting and recent innovations are their REME HALO residential and commercial air purification systems that have been shown to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly known as the coronavirus 2019 or COVID-19. Based on a study which commenced in March 2020, and overseen by Dr. James Marsden, Executive Director of Science and Technology at RGF, Dr. Marsden stated that “the study results show the REME HALO to be effective in combating the COVID-19 virus and a valuable solution to immediately improve the Indoor Air Quality of residential and commercial spaces and protect occupants against exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” The independent third-party study focused on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 using RGF’s proprietary REME HALO air purification systems with PHI-Cell technology. The testing was performed at the Innovative Bioanalysis Laboratories in Cypress, California. The virus was nebulized into a large 1,280 cubic foot chamber representing a real-world, air-conditioned office or home. With the REME HALO operating inside the chamber, the virus was reduced on contact resulting in a 99.9% reduction of the virus within the simulated real-world space, reducing the risk of person-to-person infection by respiratory particles and aerosols. This is great news. But the even better news is that you can have the REME HALO air purification system installed in your home today for probably less than you might have imagined. RGF strongly recommends that their REME HALO system only be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. In East Tennessee and the Tellico Lake area the REME HALO air purification system is installed by Gent Heating & Cooling. Gent Heating & Cooling owner, Shane Gent, and his team of highly trained technicians, have earned a well deserved reputation for quality workmanship, professionalism and fairness for over 20+ years. Gent has the REME HALO system in stock and ready for installation. Gent Heating & Cooling is a full-service HVAC company specializing in existing and new residential and commercial heating and air-conditioning work, including sales, installation and service of all brands. March In the Garden

I

by

Lisa Grugin

t is a good thing that March is coming, because February has been miserable. Today it is 36 degrees and sleet is falling. I have a heater going under my desk, and I am wearing multiple layers. The good news is that March is generally much kinder than February, and I am sure there will be at least a few beautiful days so you can start working in your yard without freezing! You’ll want to start getting ready as soon as possible, but do not rush planting. Tender veggies, herbs, and annuals will be angry if you plant them before the soil warms and will punish you by refusing to perform. • March is the month to finalize those plans you made in February. What needs to be done in your yard? What needs to be added, removed, divided, pruned, fertilized, or replaced? Would you like to set up a birding area? Do you need more blooms and less evergreens or vice versa? Would you like to establish a pollinator friendly area? Do you need to scale back on plants that require too much maintenance? Now is the time to make these decisions and call around for landscape installation before everyone gets too busy. As a note, remember that not everyone who slaps a “landscape” sticker on their truck knows what they are doing. It is better to pay a little more for someone who will put the right plant in the right place the right way. Ask your neighbors, check with the BBB, and have a good conversation with the person you choose, because you could be living with their work for a very long time. • March is also a great for preparing. Once you have your plans finalized, get your beds ready. Remove all weeds and work a little compost and/or topsoil into the beds if you have not already done so. Put down a pre-emergent like Preen to keep those weeds from coming back. If you have a problem bed where everything seems to die, this is the time to do a soil test to see if your nutrients are lacking. You can also go ahead and put

down some fresh mulch to keep the soil temperature and moisture levels stable during our roller-coaster spring! • You can plant trees, shrubs, and cool season perennials in your yard as soon as the ground is workable. By workable, I mean it isn’t a muddy mess. (Did you know that roots require oxygen? They get it from the soil, but if the soil is saturated, they “drown.”) You can also plant pansies if you didn’t get them in last fall or if your fall plantings failed. • You can start warm season annual and vegetable seeds inside, but they need to stay inside. Cool-season greens, onion sets, beets, carrots, potatoes, and radishes can be seeded directly into the ground. You can also plant cole crop seedlings mid-month if Mother Nature is cooperating. This includes head lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. • You can fertilize trees and shrubs after the middle of the month. Fertilize

perennials when they begin to show new growth, crocus after blooms have faded, and daffodils when they start to yellow. I like to use organic products, but I beg you to please read and follow directions no matter what kind of fertilizer you use. • Divide and transplant summer blooming perennials such as daylilies, hostas, and Siberian iris. • You can prune summer flowering shrubs like roses and Crepe Myrtles before they start putting on new growth. It is also a good idea to go ahead and prune out any dead or damaged wood from trees and shrubs. With that being said, there is a huge difference between pruning and butchering. Some of you are like a toddler that found some scissors: You just start whacking. Educate yourself! • Grasses and groundcovers can be cut back now. The easiest way is to set your lawnmower on the highest setting and run over shorter plants. Large grasses

should be cut back, but leave enough old growth to protect the baby grass as it emerges. Divide overgrown clumps. • You may have perennials that look terrible right now. Once the new growth has emerged at the base of your perennials, cut all that ugly, old stuff off. If you have questions, please call. • Don’t forget the birds! Keep feeders clean and full of a good quality birdseed, and keep birdbaths clean and full when they aren’t frozen. Clean out birdhouses, but make sure they are not occupied first! High fat foods such as black oil sunflower seeds and suet are best this time of year. We are getting shipments in daily of gift items and plants, so stop by and see what’s new! Country Carpet & Flooring / Cabinets Putting the “Know” Into “Know-How”

f you’re considering new flooring for your home, I highly encourage you to look beyond the multitudes of carpeting, tile, luxury vinyl flooring and hardwood options that are available before making your decision. Be sure to closely examine the surfaces that you will be cov-

ering. That surface, also referred to as the substrate, if ignored, could lead to the failure of your new flooring. And that could lead to a big repair or replacement bill. Inferior carpet padding can lead to premature carpet wear. Inadequate substrate preparation can lead to a loss of tile adhesion, grout failure and cracked tiles. Uneven floor surfaces can cause luxury vinyl floor planks to fail and result in unwanted floor noise and possible moisture related

e frequently receive inquiries from homeowners who have recently visited friends and relatives that have installed an underdecking system on their home’s raised deck. I think it’s the appealing aesthetics that first catches their Ask About Our Exclusive Bead Board Design eye. Let’s face it: The underside of a deck as viewed from the patio below is dreary at best. If you have ever investigated underdecking systems, you’ve already discovered that there are a variety of options to choose from. That’s why I would like to highlight a system that I truly believe you will find superior to any other system available. First of all, we don’t purchase generic “off-the-shelf” components. All of the materials we install at your home were manufactured and fabricated at our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility specifically for your project. We use only 22 gauge galvanized steel coated with a Dura Coat polyester paint. Many of our competitors use a light gauge generic aluminum substitute. Our patented system does not attach itself to the underside of your deck. Our system ENJOY YEAR-ROUND OUTDOOR LIVING is fully supported by our gutter system that is installed along the perimeter of your raised deck. Can You Actually Enjoy Something That is Both Delicious and Healthy?

L

ocal pharmacist and entrepreneur, Ellen Phillips, is often asked that question by clients, friends and even family members. “Not surprisingly, their questions are typically laced with a certain degree of irony, but my answer often comes as a surprise to many,” says Ellen. “My over 20 year career in retail and clinical hospital pharmacies was the inspiration behind my creation and launching of believeRx. believeRX offers clients a totally new and innovative approach to healthcare. Pharmacies are typically viewed by most patients as an impersonal, assembly-line type experience for dispensing prescriptions, combined with a mini-mart. believeRX, on the other hand, differs by combining a holistic and interactive approach to the pharmaceutical experience, delivering an experience designed to help you ‘Live Your Best Life’.” So it came as little surprise to those who know Ellen best that her answer to their ‘Delicious and Healthy’ question came in the form of a line of new products she recently introduced – fresh and individually crafted Smoothie drinks, bowls and juices made from her very own recipes. Not your everyday Smoothie, we recently asked Ellen to describe the delicious and healthy differences between her Smoothies and the often sugar added and artificial in-

Invest in Your Home, Invest in Yourself

S

Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading your home with a water filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health.

pring cleaning has arrived! Most of America is cleaning out closets, welcoming the warmer weather, and maybe even dabbling in some home renovation projects. While renovations are an important update to your home, we at Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading your home with a water filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health. In the last year, we’ve spent more time in our homes than ever before, and the housing market has absolutely exploded. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is your next best home improvement investment. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor - East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures - A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system because reducing the build-up in these appliances allows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home - With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. 4. Improved Health - Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria,

chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs the chlorine like a sponge, leaving you at risk. To name a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems and cancer from THM agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair - A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your applianc-

es as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes. Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you improve your home in 2021 by doing an in-person or virtual free water health checkup. We’ll come to your house for FREE or connect via Zoom. It’s your choice! For East Tennessee’s Mountain Views readers

only, we’re offering an exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice ($195 value) and $200 off when you purchase a system before March 31st, 2021.
