April Highlights From the Publisher

pring is a time of renewal when we witness new leaves starting to show on trees and bushes and colorful spring blooms putting on a beautiful show. Here in Knoxville, dogwood blooms are celebrated month long with the annual Dogwood Arts Festival. Color is finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our surroundings and lifting our spirits. I know I get energized and inspired in spring to make some changes in my interior décor, and although we have been making renovations all last season, I still like to brighten up my rooms with a touch of spring. If spring energizes you to spruce up your home, then consider contacting some of our advertisers that cater to your home’s interior and exterior décor, like our featured business on the cover of Section B, CertaPro Painters. Their team of professionals can give your home a fresh look both inside and out, and they have services that go beyond painting. April in Knoxville is full of activity, and we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views hope you can get out and enjoy some of our area’s events. It’s time to shed the winter blues and enjoy the bright colors of spring in East Tennessee.

Amish Furniture is Not a Style

By Angie Carroll, Owner of Amish Elegance

W

hen asked to describe Amish made furniture, the majority of those asked would likely respond that Amish furnishings are handmade from American hardwoods, particularly oak, in the shaker and mission styles. Well, they would only be partially correct. The fact is that “Amish made” more correctly describes not the style of furniture, but rather a quality standard or level of excellence not commonly found in most home furnishings today. “Amish made” describes the centuries old commitment of individual Amish artisans to their craft and not any particular style of furniture. One of our greatest delights that we experience on a daily basis at Amish Elegance is the expression on the faces of customers who are visiting our showroom for the very first time. At Amish Elegance, you will discover traditional, rustic, retro, modern, contemporary, casual, urban, and yes, shaker and mission styles. What you will also discover is a level of quality that you might have remembered as a child but that you thought no longer existed. You will also find a willingness to give you exactly what you want – not merely a production line piece of furniture now manufactured offshore, sitting on a warehouse shelf with hundreds of identical pieces. Would you like to substitute hardwoods, shift colors or stains, incorporate a performance fabric, or supple leather into your design? Perhaps you would like to increase the diameter of a dining room tabletop or increase the length of your new sideboard. What might surprise you more is that our genuine Amish made furnishings are competitively priced with assembly line manufactured furniture – and often less. At Amish Elegance, you will discover quality your way, in your style, and at a price you can afford. So if you think “Amish made” only describes a style, we invite you to rediscover the real truth behind “Amish made” at the all-new Amish Elegance.

Plans Being Made to Celebrate McMinn’s Bicentennial

6A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2019

By Rob Preston, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce

The first railroad in East Tennessee, the Hiwassee Railroad, began construction in McMinn County in the late 1830s but was halted due to financial difficulties. Work was resumed by the East Tennessee and Georgia Railroad (ET&G) in 1849, and by the mid1850s, rail lines connected Chattanooga, Knoxville, and the Tri-Cities. Like many East Tennessee counties,

McMinn was polarized by the Civil War and the issue of secession. On June 8, 1861, the county voted against secession by a margin of 1,144 to 904. The county provided 12 regiments for the Union Army and eight for the Confederate Army during the course of the war. In August 1946, an uprising known as the Battle of Athens erupted when the McMinn County sheriff and several other county officials attempted to fix local elections. A group of World War II veterans launched an armed assault on the jail in Athens, where the county officials had retreated with the ballot boxes. After an exchange of gunfire, the county officials turned over the ballot boxes, and the votes were counted in a public setting. For more on the history of McMinn County, visit the Living Heritage Museum located in Athens or online at www. livingheritagemuseum.org.

cMinn County is preparing to celebrate its 200th birthday. In the fall of 1819, legislation was signed that created McMinn County, and a few months later, the first county meeting took place in the spring of 1820. A Bicentennial Committee is in place and working on getting numerous events planned beginning later this year and running over into 2020. Ideas currently considered include a lecture series on a variety of topics, including those that celebrate the county’s military history, as well as the transportation history. McMinn County was created in 1819 from Indian lands and was named in honor of Joseph McMinn (1758–1824). McMinn was a militia commander during the Revolutionary War, a member of

the territorial legislature, speaker of the state senate, and eventually governor of the state of Tennessee. McMinn died on October 17, 1824, and is buried at Shiloh Presbyterian Cemetery in Calhoun.

~ SALON BIZ 2019 ~

Don’t Say No

s we get older, we oftentimes continue to discover some of the little secrets of human nature. In my own experience, one of the most consistent human nature traits is that we do not like to hear the word NO. Here are some hints as to how you can avoid hearing the word no during your salon visit. At our salon, our entire staff works on the premise that people do not like to hear the word no, and as a guest of

the salon, you should almost never have to settle for a no in any shape, form, or fashion. When discussing possibilities for your hair with your stylist, it is of course important to effectively manage your expectations when asking for a particular style. When we make reasonable requests of people, the opportunities to hear the word no are almost always reduced. Should you find yourself in a conversation with your stylist and they

have been forced to tell you “no,” don’t be afraid to ask what a possible compromise might be. When it comes to scheduling your salon visits, Brian K. Whitehead make sure you do not have Managing Partner to hear the word no from The Village Salon the front desk. When you have a stylist with a large The Village Salon practice, sometimes find222 Village Square ing an appointment that fits in Tellico Village your needs can be difficult, 865-458-9332 and sadly, the front desk is thevillagesalon@aol.com not able to accommodate every scheduling request. In order to not hear the word no, simply ask the salon representative to take your name and number, along with your request, and give the note to your stylist to be placed on their waiting list. Oftentimes your stylist can find openings to squeeze you into their book at a time that the desk representatives simply do not have the authority to schedule. Everyone enjoys their salon visits more when they do not have to hear the word no, and if you have played your cards right, you will never have to hear it again. Thank you all for the continuing stream of ideas for this column, and should you have any problems at all with your salon visits, please consult your salon professional.

Get Your Spring Wardrobe Ready with a Custom Closet

N

ow that spring is here, it’s time to put away the winter coats and heavy sweaters. It’s also time to make a seasonal assessment of your closet and update your spring wardrobe. The highlights from New York Fashion Week include these 2019 spring fashion trends: » Puff shoulders on both dresses and blouses » Western-influenced clothes, jackets, and shoes » Pleats » Florals » Larger hats » Dressy shorts Before you grab your so-last-year purse to go shopping, take time to shop your own closet, assessing your wardrobe and de-cluttering. Go through your closet, piece by piece, and only keep what you will actually wear. The clothes that make you feel good about yourself!

After discarding clothing, you’ll have a base wardrobe to supplement with new spring pieces. You can buy only the clothes and accessories you need to keep both your budget and closet under control. Admittedly, much of what makes the runway never ends up in your closet, and not because of the price. Designers take bold liberties with style striving for a “wow” factor but often ending up with a “yikes!” Align the new trends with your own style and select new elements that enhance your personal fashion aura.

Custom Closet Design to Fit Your Needs Personal style is also true for closets. A custom closet from Tailored Living of Knoxville lets you decide exactly the features and accessories you need to make your closet truly your own. For example: » Shoe lovers require lots of custom racks to organize a wide array of styles. » Love purses? From Hobo bags to clutches, you’ll need shelves or deep drawers. » An extensive jewelry collection is protected in velvet-lined drawers with sections for rings, bracelets, necklaces, and watches. » If you’re much taller or shorter than average, items can be hung at the height that’s comfortable for you. A Tailored Living designer maximizes your closet space while helping you achieve the perfect closet with regard to style, accessories, and budget. By planning space for jackets and blouses, dresses, pants, shoes, and other accessories, everything will have its own place so your closet stays uncluttered and organized. If it’s a shared closet, customization accommodates the needs of both people. From the closet to the laundry room and the garage to the home office, Tailored Living enhances your style during every season. Termite Trivia

12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2019

O

ne reason termites are difficult to detect is because they live in colonies underground and move around through subterranean tunnels. Termite tubes are not often visible but can sometimes be seen on block walls, in crawl spaces, etc. They have voracious appetites, munching 24/7 on cellulose which includes all wood – such as flooring, framing, and windows – wallpaper, books, stored items, etc. An established subterranean termite colony with several million termites can consume the amount of wood equivalent to one cup of sawdust in as little as two hours. Termites have specialized jobs within the colony so it can grow – workers, soldiers, nymphs, reproductive individuals, queen, and king. Termites are social insects, and the activity of a colony is dictated by “swarm intelligence.” This means the colony works as a single unit with the needs of the group always taking precedence. You can trust Dayton’s professionals to know exactly what to look for in finding termites. New customers will receive $25 OFF an initial pest control treatment with an annual agreement and $150 OFF a termite treatment with the Termidor® HP Injection System. Dayton’s other services include radon testing and mitigation, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, pest control for bed bugs/rodents/wasps/ bees, fungicide/moldicide treatments, and VA/FHA termite inspections. Seal Your Spring Cleaning Efforts I s your tile dingy? Does your tile and grout refuse to succumb to your best cleaning efforts? Why is cleaning tile and grout so difficult? How can you keep it clean once you GET it clean? Here’s the scoop… chemicals cause soil and dirt to build up over time and get pushed down into your floor as you mop. The more you mop, the more build-up occurs,

which over time causes your tile to look dull and your grout lines to discolor and darken. Much of the dirt you are attempting to remove actually becomes trapped within your floors, which often requires special equipment to dislodge. While you may be successful in removing the uppermost surface dirt, anything that gets into the pores creeps deep within your floors, which leads to staining

and becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Marble, granite, and polished natural stone are especially sensitive to cleaning solvents and result in permanent damage. If you aren’t comfortable cleaning your floors or your high-traffic areas are a concern, it’s time to call a professional. John at Surface Doc gets more requests for tile and grout cleaning than any other service his company offers. Surface Doc uses a four-step restoration process: High heat, eco-friendly emulsifiers and purified water, adjustable pressure, and contained suction. Afterwards, the homeowner may opt to seal. Sealing is a great way to keep those professional results for years after your initial cleaning. If your floors are already clean, you may wish to have them sealed before any damage is done. The best way to test whether your grout needs resealing is to place a few drops of water on the grout line and see if it remains on the grout surface or soaks right in. If it disappears, it’s time to reseal. Using a quality sealer will ensure that newly cleaned and sanitized floors will continue to look beautiful. Sealing also makes cleanup a snap. All you need is hot water and a microfiber pad. To inquire about tile and grout cleaning, professional restoration cleaning, or sealing, call John Fitzwilliam at 865-567-1986 today. Olympian-Guided Hiking Series Kicks off 21st Year with Friends of the Smokies

“G

et on the Trail with Friends & Missy” is kicking off its 21st year as a guided hiking series to raise funds to support Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The series features day hikes in the Smokies led by U.S. Olympian and personal fitness guru, Missy Kane, each Wednesday in April.

» April 3 – West Prong to Campsite 18 (5 miles round trip, easy difficulty) » April 10 – Huskey Gap to Fighting Creek Gap (5 miles round trip, moderate difficulty) » April 17 – Rainbow Falls (5 miles round trip, strenuous difficulty) » April 24 – Big Creek to Campsite 17 (11 miles round trip, difficult due to distance) Since 1998, Missy Kane has helped hikers of all ages explore the park, learn more about exercise and physical fitness, and experience the history, wildlife, and natural beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. To date, these hikes have raised more than $200,000 through the generous support of participants and sponsors to help fund critical park projects, including wildlife conservation efforts and trail maintenance. “It’s hard to believe we are starting our 21st year of Get on the Trail with Friends & Missy,” said Missy. “I especially love the spring series, as the Smokies should be putting on a great wildflower show.” To register for any of the upcoming guided hikes, hikers must pre-register by calling the Covenant Health Call Center at 865541-4500. Space is limited, and the hikes will sell out. The cost for each hike is $20 per person, with proceeds supporting Friends of the Smokies and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. A complimentary Friends of the Smokies membership is provided with registration of the entire series. Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised $65 million to support critical park programs in North Carolina and Tennessee. The Ease of Women’s Fashions Today Fashion Sense

Weddings before & weddings now

W

hen you walk into The Lily Pad, you may sense a little different approach to ladies’ fashions this year. It’s a little more casual to accommodate the lifestyle of our customers. Whether we like it or not, it’s a trend we are seeing not only in East Tennessee, but across the entire country. Many of the lines we previously carried, which would have fallen into the “dressier” category, are no longer in business, thanks to our laidback lifestyle. So, let’s embrace and enjoy it! Not so long ago we would have never worn slacks to church, a wedding,

One of the definite advantages to this simplified way of dressing is that you never feel overdressed or underdressed. Anything goes! The structured “stiffer” look is no more. A relaxed, still very feminine, and put together look now rules the fashion world. There has even been a new category added to ladies’ wear called “athleisure” wear. It’s a combination of both athletic and leisure wear. We are not talking about your old sweatpants and sweatshirts, but a whole new look that

takes you through your day with ease. Although we still carry a wonderful selection for those events where you may still want to really “dress up,” or if you are a special attendee to a wedding, mother or grandmother perhaps, we continue to stock wonderful selections for your special occasions. However, if you are like most of us and want to look well put together, stylish, and updated every day, stop by The Lily Pad and give us your thoughts on fashion for spring 2019. We think you are going to love it!

Reflections of Rev. Paul Elbert (Ret.)

t has been said that the difference between a pilgrim and a tourist is that a pilgrim goes on a journey to experience God in a new or different way. That is what 24 people did last December when they went to Israel, Jordan, and Palestine to walk the way of Jesus and Moses and the disciples and the Israelites. To visit “The Land” is to immerse ourselves in the Story of God – to trace our steps along the biblical paths, both well-known and forgotten. Our group was primarily Lutheran, so we were steeped in asking the question of both place and story: “What does this mean to us today in our faith and in our lives?” We stepped back into the story of the Incarnation and followed the story to the Crucifixion. But we lingered where Jesus taught and the disciples fished. From the summit of Mt. Nebo, we gazed out onto the wilderness where the Israelites wandered for 40 years and listened again to the story of Moses invited to view but prohibited from entering the land God had promised Abraham. It was at the wonder of Petra where we could imagine wise men from the

Baptism in the River Jordan

east proceeding through this hub of incense trade on their way to Bethlehem. At the Dead Sea, we imagined David hiding from Saul. Did he float, like us, in that great Salt Sea? The Psalms tell us that the oasis of En Gedi were as verdant to him as they were to us. We met the Jordan River at its headwaters in the north and then again further south where we reaffirmed our baptisms in the place where John baptized. We prayed at the ancient and massive foundation stones of the Western Wall and at the new church built in the village of Mary Magdalene. The stones of the Land tell ancient stories

Sunset in Jerusalem

that become new – to pilgrims willing to listen. And now to hear the biblical witness with new ears – rehearsing the words of prophets, priests, and our King – we see a bit more clearly the Land we had only imagined.

Community Church at Tellico Village Uses Technology to Share Easter Service Live Online

A

s an interdenominational church, one of its missions is to welcome all Christians. One way it does this is by live streaming its 10:15 am Easter service, and every 10:15 am Sunday service, at TellicoChurch.com.“We invite people from all faith and denominational backgrounds to join us at our Easter services at 8 and 10:15 am,” said Dr. Stephen Prevatte, Senior Pastor at Community Church at Tellico Village (CCTV). “In addition, we want to make sure all know that we stream our Easter service. The streaming of the 10:15 am Easter service provides an opportunity for those who are shut-in or traveling and who can’t make it to the church to still participate by being able to view the service.” Those who would like to view the live streaming video of the service can do so by going to TellicoChurch.com. “Another important reason we want to make everyone aware of our 10:15 am Easter service being streamed is to reach out to those who may be searching for a church home,” said Prevatte. “This is a great opportunity to begin to get to know us, and what better time to start that process than the day Christ has risen?” Whether you attend the Easter service in person or view it online, your ears will be filled with joyous sounds. CCTV’s chancel choral, bell ringers, musicians, and a unique organ add a rich vibrancy to the Easter service. “Easter is a unique season where the religious and the secular both interact with the same question: Who was Jesus and what do His teachings mean for us today?” said Pastor Devin Phillips, CCTV Pastor of Connections.

E

“Those who have never been to church or are looking for one, come and join us for Easter and our Holy Week services as we wrestle with this together.” Holy Week will include a Maundy Thursday Service at 7 pm in the Founder’s Chapel and Good Friday Meditation service from noon to 3 pm. There will be a sunrise service at Kahite and Rarity Bay, that all are invited to attend, at 6:45 am, followed by Easter services at the Community Church at Tellico Village at 8 and 10:15 am. An Easter egg hunt for the children will begin at 11:30 am.The Community Church at Tellico Village is conveniently located at 130 Chota Center in Loudon. Bernard Fowler by

E

ast Tennesseans are Rolling Stones fans. Not just fans of Mick, Keith, Charlie, and Ronnie, but also of Lisa Fischer, Daryl Jones, and, of course, Bernard Fowler. Mr. Fowler graced Everything Knoxville’s pages almost four years ago (and first on Boomerocity’s pages six years ago). With a Stones tour already announced and Fowler’s release of his own new CD, Inside Out, it was a great time to catch up with him again. I called him while he was at Denver’s airport on his way to a performance of A Bowie Celebration with some of David Bowie’s former bandmates. (You can read the extended version of this interview on www.boomerocity.com for his comments about those shows.) According to Fowler’s press release for Inside Out, Mick Jagger made a comment about how he was handling a Stones song during a soundcheck, and that’s what kicked off this album. “It was that comment from him that made me get the recording process started,” said Fowler. “I had plans to do it already, but getting that comment from him just put a stamp. Right after the tour I went to work on it.” The album is a bit of a surprise from Fowler. It’s an album of Rolling Stones tunes spanning most of their entire career. However, it’s his treatment of those classics that will cause listeners to sit up and lean into what they’re hearing. Take, for instance, the song selection. The disc’s eight songs are pulled from the Stones’ Beggars Banquet, Sticky

Fingers, It’s Only Rock and Roll, Goats Head Soup, and Undercover. Five great Rolling Stones albums with some of the most popular songs of their 50+ year career. Fowler shared why this was the case. “The criteria was strong lyric content,” he said. “Then I opened the Rolling Stones songbook. I read some lyrics, and I saw the lyric content and I went to it. Sympathy for the Devil is a pretty obvious thing. That’s the last thing that I recorded, because I had a deadline, and that lyric content – it was strong. So it just made sense to add that to the whole thing.” The obvious question is has Mick and/or Keith heard the album, and, if so, what was their reaction to it? “I’m sure that they’ve probably heard it by now, but I have not spoken to them, so I don’t know,” said Fowler. “I’ve not performed it yet. It’s not even released yet officially. It’s the 19th of April. But the people that have heard it, the response has been incredible. “When I was recording it, I played Keith a little taste of it. I wrote that in the liner notes. He looked at me, smiled, and said, ‘Damn, Fowler! You went deep!’ I was really in the early stage of recording. He hasn’t heard it in its completion, as far as I know. I’m not sure if he’s heard it.” Artists often like to point to one song from each of their albums that is a “calling card” for the entire album. I asked Fowler which song from Inside Out would he point to as the calling card for the album. “Probably ‘Sister Morphine.’ I like how it turns out.

It’s exactly what I wanted when I envisioned it, which was a jazz piece, and it worked out perfect. I couldn’t have asked for any more. It’s exactly what I wanted.” Interestingly, Fowler went into the studio determined not to sing the lyrics, which may disappoint some of his – as well as Rolling Stones – fans. We all love hearing Fowler’s silky, Smoky Robinson-like voice. But don’t let it keep you from getting the disc. It’s a keeper. That said, I did ask him what made him decide to take the non-singing approach to the Stones catalog. “It’s something I wanted to do,” he said. “Although people pretty much know me as a vocalist, I’m a producer. I wanted to do something different. I didn’t want to do a record like The Bura again this particular time. I wanted to do something different – something really different coming from me. It would be a spoken-word record.” One can’t speak with any of the Rolling Stones team without asking about an upcoming tour or album. When I asked Fowler what kind of show can fans expect from the upcoming tour, he chuckled and said, “You know what? You know what I know. I won’t know what that is until I get to rehearsal. I’ll start rehearsal the end of March/first of April.” We can hardly wait to see which cities the Rolling Stones will be performing. In the meantime, you can order Fowler’s three solo albums, Friends with Privileges, The Bura, and now Inside Out. All three are a worthy addition to your listening library. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Have You Had Your Annual Checkup?

Y

By Douglas Warren

ou may initially think I am talking about your annual medical checkup, but actually I am referring to your annual financial check-up. Just like it is critical to review your medical health, you should take similar care of your financial well-being with an annual checkup of essentials, such as wills and living trusts, life insurance, and retirement funding. Also, don’t be fooled into thinking you should only have a financial checkup when you get older and are nearing retirement. A financial checkup may be as important in your younger life.

Read and Review Your Will When was the last time you read your will? I must admit a few years ago, I pulled out my will and read through it. I was surprised how outdated it was. My choice of personal representative had passed a few years earlier, and it still named my choice of guardians for my children who were in their mid-30s. While these were important at the time I wrote my will, they were outdated. I found that some of my interests and desires had changed over time. It was time to rethink my desires and goals and make them more relevant. Your beneficiaries and allocations may

no longer fulfill your current wishes. Other important documents such as Powers or Attorney, living wills, and medical directives should also be reviewed or considered if not in place.

Set Financial Goals Financial goals are simply financial targets and a road map to accomplish them. Building a retirement fund, creating an emergency fund, and saving money are just a few examples of financial goals. Setting your goals and evaluating your progress can insure they become a reality. Knowing how much to invest today to reach a financial goal in the future can better insure success. Monitoring and measuring your progress can reduce the stress and anxiety in planning for your financial future.

Protect Your Personal Security Request a free credit report and protect your personal data. Scammers target older individuals as they often don’t understand technological weaknesses and may be more willing to comply with the requests of strangers. Check the information on your credit reports for accuracy. Each of the three credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and Transunion – are required to give you a free copy of your credit report every year. You can obtain your reports at www.AnnualCreditReport.com.

Your Insurance Coverage This is another review that people overlook. Failing to review your life insurance could leave you dangerously exposed. Life insurance is often used for specific events that could occur. As with my will, my annual review revealed my insurance policies were outdated. When my children were young and I had a home mortgage, I was concerned about my family’s financial well-being in the event something happened to me. I selected an amount of life insurance that would financially provide for my family, including educational needs. As I mentioned, my

children were in their mid-30s and already educated and financially dependent. My life insurance was no longer appropriately structured. While the need to have life insurance at some level remained important, the amount of coverage was no longer appropriate. Other needs like long-term care and retirement funding were more important.

Analyze Your Retirement Funds You need to ensure the amount you are saving meets your needs and retirement goals. You should start setting aside retirement funds when you begin to work. As we get older, we need to make sure our retirement portfolio has the right mix of assets. When we are young and years away from retirement, we can take more risk and a more long-term approach to our retirement funding. But as we get older and the access to our retirement funds is more imminent, we may need to migrate our investments to a more conservative approach. Also, while some of the funds may be needed in the early years of retirement, some of the funds to be used later in retirement can be invested in a more aggressive manner. Determining our future needs and the timing of funding can assist in properly structuring our retirement portfolio. Evaluate returns and re-balance your investments as needed.

Plan for the End Life events such as divorce, marriage, death, and changes in financial circumstances can necessitate changes in our estate and financial plans. Coordinating your will, trust, life insurance, and investments with your goals can be critical to achieving them. Evaluating your financial progress can be stressful and overwhelming. Take control of your future and plan for success. If you need assistance in conducting your annual review and assessing your progress, the professionals at WarrenJackson can assist you. f it’s time to move your family’s events back outdoors, the professionals at Undercover Systems can provide you with the unlimited out-of-door options that your family can enjoy all year-round. Spring is the perfect time to install Undercover Systems’ totally unique underdecking ceiling system under your home’s existing raised decks. This totally proprietary and patented underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, snow, and the searing summertime sun. “Spring is a great time to weatherproof all of your future out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you each step of the way, from consultation to project completion, until you are completely satisfied. And because each underdeck system we install is custom made by Undercover Systems specifically for your home, you can be assured of many years of reliable, trouble-free family enjoyment. Most competitive systems use generic, off the shelf components found at the big home

improvement box stores. Homeowners also appreciate the fact that their new underdeck system is totally supported by Undercover Systems’ gutters and not your home’s deck as with competitive systems. This promotes greater deck air circulation and deck longevity.” You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan. Delivering an Extraordinary Experience with Every Painting Project

S

pring has become that favorite time of the year when so many of us make plans to update our home or business. The experts agree that there is not a faster or more cost-effective way to update your interior and exterior surfaces than painting. With a virtually unlimited palette of colors and finishes to select from, you’ll no doubt discover those justso-perfect colors for your every mood and space, magically transforming your home and business. The success of every painting project depends entirely on your selection of a qualified painting contractor ahead of your selection of a paint brand, paint type, and colors. So just how should you go about selecting the right painting contractor? In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are excited to share with our readers this interview with CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee’s Jim Mazrimas (Residential Sales Associate), Salomon Velasquez (Job Site Supervisor), and Liz Kaleida (customer). CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee is the proud recipient of numerous awards and honors for their expertise in the fields of both residential and commercial painting during the last 16 years, including 2018 National Franchise of the Year. They continue to earn a reputation for honesty, integrity, value, and quality craftsmanship. MV: How did you hear about CertaPro originally, and what motivated you to make the call for an estimate? Liz: We got several estimates with references, but we just weren’t sure about hiring one of those painting contractors. Then we got a mailing from CertaPro. It was perfect timing. Usually we would consider those ads junk mail. This ad was a gem. We were happy we called. We HIGHLY recommend CertaPro and every member of this team. MV: How do you make each estimate experience personal for your customers? Jim: On the sales side, we try to connect with our customers even before we meet them in person. We do a setup call prior to the estimate to confirm the appointment time and to discuss the scope of work for their home improvement project. We attempt to get to know our customer personally and not just talk paint. We continue to build this relationship once we meet in person for the estimate. We want our customers to know that we are here for them and that we really care about their individual projects. We like to think that we are painting lives, not just homes. MV: Describe the CertaPro Painters process and how this process differentiates from other contractors/home improvement specialists you’ve hired. Liz: Jim came to our home to give us an estimate. We pointed out repairs that needed to be made, and we were pleased that CertaPro would be able to handle those. Jim went over the process and his plan to send sufficient staff so the work could be finished in a reasonable time. CertaPro recommends Sherwin-Williams paint. We had a preference for another brand, and Jim accommodated us without any pressure. CertaPro didn’t require a deposit and applied a discount for having the work done in the winter. Jim was very friendly and professional. MV: You advertise that you “don’t paint houses, you paint lives.” How does that look from a painter’s prospective? Salomon: Having clean shoes, leaving the home cleaner than when we arrived, offering to change light bulbs, or rearrange furniture. We’re happy when a customer loves the work. We also make

Jim Mazrimas

sure we put things back in the same place and communicate with the customer every day and let them know what progress has been made. MV: Did CertaPro Painters deliver on the promises that were made during the estimate? Liz: Absolutely. We had our entire home painted, including ceilings and closets, and it was completed in a week. Jim said we would be pleased with the staff he sent. We liked Salomon, Luis, Alexis, Stephanie, and Felix so much that we were sorry to see them leave. English is a second language for some of them, and they were patient while we practiced our Spanish. We had no problems communicating. They are skilled painters and carpenters (as needed). They took great care with the trim and furniture, moving and protecting other surfaces. MV: Poor communication is often cited as the number one complaint of both home and business owners when hiring a contractor. How do you communicate with your customers to overcome a challenge? Jim: All of us at CertaPro Painters recognize that communication is key to a

successful and long-lasting relationship with our customers. We have multiple levels of contact with our customers, starting with the office staff, to the sales team, and on through the production team. We try to ensure that our customer is fully aware of our process and what they can expect once the painting crew arrives. This communication continues with follow-up after the project is completed to be sure we have met or exceeded their expectations. Our main goal is building customers for life as we provide them with an extraordinary painting experience. MV: How did CertaPro handle any potential issues that came up during the job? Liz: We had done some remodeling since Jim gave his estimate. This required extra repairs. I let him know in advance, and he assured me they would be able to handle it. Additional charges for this work were reasonable. It was also necessary to put a third coat on one section of wall, where you could see the cutting in underneath – hatband effect. CertaPro paid for the additional gallon of paint, and

I was pleased that Andy, the supervisor, readily agreed to the need for an additional coat. MV: What makes CertaPro different than other companies you have worked with? Salomon: They are more professional, a true partnership, and service managers come around and help. It makes you feel like a family. MV: Tell our readers about the other services CertaPro Painters offers their customers. Jim: We feel CertaPro stands out from the competition with the additional expert services we provide. Besides interior and exterior painting for residential and commercial customers, we provide all levels of drywall, carpentry, and remodel work as we strive to become your “one-stop shop.” MV: How can our readers learn more about CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee? Join Premiere Consignment in Celebrating Its 7th Anniversary

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2019

By Becky Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

O

n behalf of the entire Hunt family, as we begin our 7th year in business, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for both your support and encouragement since we launched Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village. In addition to offering you incredible savings on thousands of square feet of quality, name brand, pre-owned furniture, home décor, lamps, Oriental and area rugs, and art from homes in area lake and golf front communities, including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay, Premiere Consignment also offers you the opportunity to sell your unused personal items through our eBay store. We provide you with the perfect venue to take full advantage of this growing selling phenomenon. The key to

success in selling many of your household items at the highest price available is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers. Through the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and often at a much higher price than you might expect – and with very little effort on your part. Premiere Consignment has made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, software and computer hardware, and a packaging station de-

signed to bring the power of eBay to you. Here’s how it works. Items are evaluated for acceptance at our intake area; accepted items receive a tracking number. Those items are professionally photographed, and their descriptions, pricing, and photographs are entered on eBay’s website. As items are sold, they’re carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. You then receive payment for your sold items. The key to success on eBay is to present your item in as professional a manner as possible. That’s why professional quality photos and well-written descriptions are essential. The other important feature we offer is our ratings, which are very important to buyers. Because of the quality

and quantity of items we sell on eBay, we offer buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. Buyers are often reluctant to buy from a seller with no track record or a limited record. To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call us at 865-458-9721 or visit us at 320 Lakeside Plaza in Loudon today. “Through Her Eyes” Award-Winning Paintings by Judy Lavoie

E

ast Tennessee fine artist, Judy Lavoie, will be featured in a solo exhibition during April, May, and June at Rarity Bay in Vonore. A multiple award-winner, Judy paints in watercolors and acrylics, exploring a wide variety of topics. The show titled “Through Her Eyes” reflects the way Judy presents common subjects in an uncommon way. The title is also a fitting description for Judy’s amazing paintings of animals, for the way she captures life and character in their eyes. Judy paints in a highly representational manner with intricate detail. She won Best in Show in the 2018 Tennessee Watercolor Society Exhibition for her colorful cow painting “Eat Chicken,” which the juror described as “making ordinary into beauty.” Judy has also been selected as the 2019 Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage Artist of the Year. The designation is made by the renowned Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, in conjunction with the 69th annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This recognition combines two of Judy’s greatest passions – painting and spring wildflowers – making it a wonderful personal milestone. Her unique watercolor painting, “Bloodroot,” will be featured on the 25+ page Pilgrimage brochure, event t-shirts, coffee mugs, and more. In addition, as the Artist of the Year, Judy is being honored with a solo exhibition at Arrowmont’s Wolpert Gallery in Gatlinburg from March 22 – April 26. A public reception is scheduled on April 24 from 5 to 7 pm, which is during the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage itself. Judy feels there is always more to learn about her craft and likes to venture beyond her comfort zone with new challenges. Most recently she has added scratchboards as her painting surface for certain works, and many of these unique pieces are in the exhibit, including her new alpaca painting “Happy Harley,” which she is featuring for the “Through Her Eyes” show at Rarity Bay. The art show is open to the public and takes place at the Rarity Bay Community Activity Center, located at 150 Rarity Bay Parkway in Vonore, from April 1 to June 28. An opening reception with the artist is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, from 1 to 4 pm, and all are welcome. The gallery space is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. Judy’s work can be seen on her website, www.judy-lavoie-art.com, and she shares many tips and techniques through her art blog.

“Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”

“I

n 2004, my husband and I toured Tellico Village and as a result, purchased a plot in the Coyatee Cove area. Since this time, my husband passed away, but my desire to build our dream home was strong. After much research and a few interviews with builders, I selected Kit Keener of Keener Homes. To begin the process, Kit referred me to a local designer. After several months of tweaking the design, we finally connected with the perfect plan; Kit patiently worked with me in regards to my budget requirements. Living in Indiana, and being single, the thought of not being present during the build was overwhelming. Kit introduced me to his project manager, and both of them reassured me that I was in good hands. We broke ground the beginning of October 2016. Pictures of the ground clearing and the foundation build were being sent to me on a weekly basis. Emails were often sent updating me on the progress of the build. In November 2016, I made a trip to Tennessee for the electrical walk-through. At that time, the walls were up, so I was able to visualize the home for the first time in person and felt more at ease. As months went by, pictures, emails, and phone conversations often kept me updated. Of course those who have built a home know that nothing goes as smoothly as you would like; however, Kit and his team were always there making me feel as if there weren’t any problems at all. Of course I can’t forget Krisha Loud, Office Manager. She was instrumental in so many ways and helped me watch the bottom line. I can’t thank Kit and his team enough for making the entire building process very comfortable for me. I definitely have new Tennessee friends.” – JoEllyn Brockmeyer

The Retirement Road Trip

April, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

R

etirement is like a long road trip with two options. You can use a map and take the highway, where there are well-maintained roads and gas stations at regular intervals. You enjoy the journey, confident and relaxed. Or you can take the backroads with no map, not knowing whether the next bridge is washed out or if you’ll run out of fuel before you find the next gas station. That journey is filled with anxiety and fear. Which do you choose? Well, if you prefer well-maintained roads and gas stations on your retirement journey, a solid financial plan makes that happen. Our firm believes that financial planning should be straight-forward and understandable. We use specialized

retirement software that shows us how to preserve your lifestyle and standard of living, no matter how long you live. We optimize your Social Security strategy, make sure you have a guaranteed floor of income, and design an investment strategy that can help weather the inevitable market ups and downs. We’ll also show you how to protect your nest egg from market loss or unexpected health care costs. Just as you insure your home and your auto against catastrophe, you can also insure your assets against market loss or the drain of increased health costs in your later years. How much, or how little, protection you want is up to you. If you and your spouse are still several years from retirement, we’ll look at disability insurance and life insurance to be sure your financial plan isn’t accidentally driven off the road before you even get to retirement. Lastly, we’ll look at how to use tax-planning to reduce taxes for you and your heirs and to protect your estate from unintentional planning errors. Whether it’s a Roth conversion strategy to create tax-free assets,

New Home Construction & Remodeling

or cash value life insurance for tax-free income, we can show you strategies to get Uncle Sam’s hand out of your pocket. And please don’t think that estate and tax planning are just for the super wealthy, because they aren’t. With good financial planning, your hard-earned savings goes to your heirs, rather than to the government in taxes. So which will it be? Certainty versus uncertainty. Confidence versus anxiety. It’s your choice! Call us today to learn more about our financial planning process. It’s understandable, affordable, and transformative. Priorities for Design in the Laundry Room

6B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2019

Y

ou are ready for a new laundry room, the workplace of your home. Designing always starts, like a painting, with a blank canvas. Deciding on the first stroke of the brush depends on what is important to your needs. We all have different priorities, so start making your list. Organization

The most important element for any storage of the home is organization. How can the new design improve the ease for tasks to be performed? What will keep clutter out of the way and help you be more productive? An organized laundry room makes work easier for everyone in the home. Equipment

Also, don’t forget laundry hampers if you do not wash right away. Design

Finally, design a space that makes you happy. Even a laundry room can and should be beautiful. Just because your budget may be limited doesn’t mean your new laundry room can’t be a welcoming space. Call today and let us create and implement a picture perfect design for your storage needs. Closets by McKenry

865-249-6382 www.ClosetsbyMcKenry.com

What equipment is needed? Are you considering a new washer and dryer? If so, research the best machines for your needs. Front loaders allow a flat surface above the machines for folding or even room for a countertop to use as a working surface. Most front loaders are also available for stacking, allowing more storage should that be a priority. Drawer units are available for underneath front load machines to reduce bending, but then hanging clothes over the machines is no longer an option. Top load washers will require extra space to be available for opening the door to the machine. These machines will not allow a counter space like front load washers. Sinks seem like a no-brainer for a laundry, but if you are not using an existing laundry sink, removing it greatly adds to your storage space. If hand washing is important, then consider finding space to add a sink. Tasks Need a spot for ironing? If storing a full-size ironing board, then allow a vertical space to store it and place for your iron, distilled water, steamer, and starch. When ironing is not a priority but you want to be prepared, a compact ironing board might be what is needed. A rod for hanging clothes right out of the washer for drying is at the top of many lists for the ideal laundry. Those that do not hang clothes find that the wall space is more valuable for cabinets.

We trust Megan and are excited to recommend Knox Cabinet Co. to our clients who might be interested in updating their kitchen, bath, or family room cabinetry. pring has been in the air on and off for months, but now it is on the calendar! That doesn’t mean that Mother Nature won’t have any more tantrums, however. I have seen frosts as late as May, so be prepared to protect tender plants from cold weather. Now that I have that warning out of the way, I can talk about all the things that can be done now! I know that many of you have been chomping at the bit, and several of you are already knee deep in landscape renovations. If you are in need of plants for a new installation or if you are re-doing old, overgrown beds, we have gotten in several loads of trees and shrubs. There are old favorites, new versions of old favorites, and some new and/or underutilized plants that we will be happy to show you! Since many of you are planting trees and shrubs, l am going to briefly touch on the way to do it properly. The top landscape problem we see is the wrong plant in the wrong place. Shade plants are put in the sun or sun plants are put in the shade. Acid lovers are planted into alkaline soil. Cute little three gallon plants that turn into 10’ shrubs are planted under windows. Please take the time to educate yourself. Know what kind of soil you have, what amount of sun you get, and how big you want the plant to get. Let

us help you make good decisions. That is what we are here for. The next problem we see is lousy planting. Have you ever heard the saying “dig a $20 hole for a $5 plant?” This means that if you just go out in your clay yard and chisel out a hole big enough to wedge your plant in, you probably aren’t going to be successful. The hole you dig should be a welcoming bed for your new plant to snuggle into. The optimal hole is no deeper than the growing container but two times the width.

(Contrary to popular opinion, most plants do not shoot roots deep into the soil. The vast majority send roots out, not down.) As you remove the clay from the hole, dump it onto a tarp or into a wheelbarrow. You then need to add in a good planting mix or soil conditioner until you have a 50/50 mix. Use this mixture to backfill your hole. Water the plant well and add more soil if the dirt settles. It is helpful to add Root & Grow or another root stimulator to help feeder roots become established. It is also beneficial to make a small dam around the plant to help hold water around the plant. Once you have the plant firmly in the ground, apply mulch to stabilize moisture and temperature levels. Donuts, not volcanoes! Never pile mulch around the base of your plant. Now let’s talk about water. Believe me when I tell you that sprinkler systems are great for grass and flowers, but they don’t do diddly for trees and shrubs. Sprinklers only water the top inch of soil at best. Trees and shrubs need water to penetrate to the bottom of the root ball once a week, which is at least a foot! This means that you will need to hand water or use a drip irrigation system for those plants. You have to continue this at least until the plant is established, which can take up to three years for larger trees. Our rainfall often takes care of this chore for you in the spring and early summer, but fall tends to be dry. It hasn’t been that long ago that we were in an exceptional drought. Who

knows what this year will hold! Once your plants are in the ground and settled in, don’t abandon them. I strongly advise you to take a nice walk around your yard at least once a week so that you can keep an eye on things. It is much easier to treat insect and disease problems if you don’t wait too long. If a plant doesn’t seem happy, snip off a little piece of it and bring it in so that we can diagnose the problem and get you the proper treatment. Speaking of insects, this is the time of year when bugs start hatching! Some plants are especially susceptible, so start treating them as soon as you see signs of problems. Check Azaleas for lace bugs, Euonymous for scale, and Alberta Spruce for spider mites. Treat as needed. Fungus is also appearing a bit early thanks to our cool, damp spring. Watch for signs of powdery mildew, black spot or other fungal spots, and rust. Treat as needed, but remember that good hygiene is critical. Remove any fallen leaves and debris from around the plant and trim as needed to improve air circulation. That’s all for this month. We are getting loads in weekly, so stop by and see what’s new! Put Your Garage in Gear

10B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2019

A

re you embarrassed to leave your garage door open very long? Have your cars been displaced from their rightful home to make room for more

clutter? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. Of all U.S. homes that have two-car garages, 35% can’t park their cars in the garage because of the junk! Garages often become a dumping ground for whatever doesn’t fit into the house. So with spring’s arrival, let’s cut the clutter and talk about getting your garage organized!

Plan the Space

How are you going to use your garage? If there’s enough space, homeowners are now using the garage for “flex space.” Besides parking cars, people utilize the garage for multiple purposes, workshops or hobby area, exercise space, or a man cave. People are planning garages so it looks and works like a part of the house, rather than an addition. Eliminate the Waste Go through everything in your garage. Place items into three piles on tarps in your driveway: Keep, donate, or There are several color combinations offered for PremierGarage’s floor coating. Shown is Smoke.

toss. Toss or donate outgrown toys, things that are broken beyond repair, outdated chemicals or paint, which may need special disposal, and anything you haven’t used in two years. If you need to store items for a couple of nights, renting a trailer is the least expensive way to store something short term. Maximize the Space When putting items back into the garage, put similar items near each other, making it easier to find things. For example, all the sporting equipment goes in one area and your everyday tools in another. Place things you use the most, like bikes or the lawnmower, close to the garage door. Put seasonal items that you use once a year in hardto-reach places. The most important clutter-busting tip is to keep items off the floor. You’ll free up more room for your car. PremierGarage can help maximize wall and ceiling space by designing and installing cabinets and organizational systems. They can also install a durable floor that stands up to the heat and friction of tires, making your garage organized and beautiful. Let PremierGarage of Knoxville help you get your garage in gear by taking it from chaos to clutter-free! PremierGarage Powered by Tailored Living 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

Townsend Artisan Guild to Present 10th Annual Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival

T

he 10th annual Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival is set for April 12-14 at Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend. The weekend event, organized by the Townsend Artisan Guild, offers 43 instructional classes by fiber arts professionals, family activities, demonstrations, live animal displays such as alpacas, llamas, angora rabbits, sheep, and goats, and the always-popular Marketplace of Vendors. The 40 vendors come from East and Middle Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Indiana, and beyond. Thirtyone vendors are returning, including Andy’s Treasures, Hickory Bluff Farms, Liles Acres Organic Farm, Saddle Brook Farm, Smoky Mountain Spinnery, and Stony Hill Fiber Arts, who have participated in all 10 of the festivals. Nine new vendors will display their fibers, tools, and finished products. All will be sharing their expertise and demonstrating tools and techniques during the festival. Two-thirds of the 43 classes are new for 2019. Popular instructors are returning, including Jennifer Bennett, Geri Forkner, and Nancy Shedden, who have been successfully instructing fiber artists and hobbyists for all 10 years of the festival. Five instructors are new to the event. Classes include hands-on instruction of the total processes, including fiber preparation, to dyeing, to spinning and then creating through crochet, embroidery, felting, knitting, tapestry, weaving, and more. Classes are kept small for individual attention, and most are designed to complete a project during the class time. On Saturday, April 13, the festival will host a Fashion Show at noon where the vendors, instructors, students, and participants will have an opportunity to display their creations. This was a popular addition last year, especially when the alpaca with her scarf decided to lead the parade. For a complete list of classes, visit www. smokymountainfiberartsfestival.org. Early registration for classes is encouraged. The 2019 Smoky Mountain Fiber Arts Festival is presented by the Townsend Artisan Guild, the Tennessee Valley Handspinners Guild, and the Scenic Valley Weavers Guild and supported by the Arts and Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, the Blount Partnership, and the Tennessee Arts Commission. The Townsend Artisan Guild, founded in 2007, brings fine artists and fine crafts persons together to promote education and development of arts. The group, through the individual participation of its members, strives to promote community interest in and appreciation of the arts through participation in events, demonstrations, classes, festivals, and workshops. The Guild provides member artists opportunities for self-promotion through art shows, exhibits, community activities, and printed and electronic means. Monthly meetings and other events provide members a creative forum to share ideas, to inspire others, and to explore business realities. In 2015, the Guild opened its own Gallery to exhibit and sell the original works of its artists. The Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday from 1:30 to 5 pm and is located at 7719 East Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend.

MCFA Pets of the Week

M

e e t Rosie. Rosie is an 18 month old black and brown shepherd/collie mix who weighs about 40 pounds. As a young adult, Rosie is full grown but still has a playful puppy personality. She came from a local family home/ farm and loves to run and play with children. Rosie was surrendered due to her love of eggs and her unfortunate habit of stealing those eggs directly from Katie Niko the chickens before the family could collect them. She is spayed and ready to go to a new home where she can bond with her new family. Also, meet Katie and Niko! Katie is a VERY new Tabby cat (indoor only) to the shelter. She was surrendered with Niko and is still a bit “shell-shocked.” At the wonderful age of eight, Katie was surrendered because the owner is moving. She has lost her human family, her home, her dog, and the only life she has known through no fault of her own. Niko is a three-and-a-half year old Aust. Shepherd/Jack Russell mix – a perfect size dog at 28 pounds – with a great personality. They need a fresh start with someone who will love them forever. The sooner they are in a new loving home, the sooner they will feel safe again. We don’t have the facilities to kennel them together, so we aren’t sure just how bonded they are, but we would love to adopt them together as a ready-to-go family. However, they are available for adoption individually as well. Please come visit them and help them learn to trust humans again. Having a cat in yourStarting lap andAta dog by your feet is one of the most peaceful feelings ever. Older cats and dogs are /SF Installed! calmer and smarter. You’ll feel their gratitude! All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. There is a $40 adoption fee if over two years old and $50 under two years old. Have you been to the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of The Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA)?
