REVOLUTIONARY, NON-SURGICAL BODY SCULPTING AND CONTOURING A
former Farragut High School graduate, Kevin Buchanan, MD, is well known to many area residents and more than just a few of his former classmates that are now patients at his Farragut Family Practice. Specializing in Family Practice Medicine, Dr. Buchanan and his team have earned a reputation as compassionate and caring medical professionals dedicated to the well-being of their patients. As is so often the case with today’s advances in medical technology, new technologies emerge that allow physicians to offer new services to their patients that were unavailable just a few short years ago. One new technology available today that a growing number of patients are taking advantage of is truSculpting, an innovative, non-surgical treatment that helps to contour your body regardless of your shape or fitness level. truSculpting can produce impressive results in as few as four 45-minute treatments and with no downtime, allowing patients to significantly eliminate fat in stubborn areas around their abdomen and flanks, where no amount of exercise and dieting succeeds. Perhaps the most remarkable outcome from the truSculpting experience extends far beyond just your enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence. It also encourages many patients to focus on their overall well-being, including proper nutrition and exercise, which can lead to a more fulfilling life and greater longevity. In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, Dr. Buchanan and his team will share with our readers the many benefits of truSculpting and answer some of the most commonly asked questions from patients. MV: Briefly describe how truSculpting can benefit our readers. Dr. Buchanan: truSculpting treatments have been clinically proven to safely, effectively, and permanently eliminate body fat in stubborn areas by up to 24% while also tightening the skin. Treatments
Kevin Buchanan, MD are safe, producing quick results in most patients – usually within 12 weeks. Patients experience little discomfort with no downtime. truSculpting patients also report improved self-esteem, confidence, and better fitting clothes. And, best of all, no one will ever know that you had the treatment performed. MV: There are other similar systems available that promise to reduce or eliminate stubborn fat cells. Just how does truSculpting work? Dr. Buchanan: truSculpting uses an innovative monopolar radiofrequency technology to selectively target fat tissue and therapeutically heat it – until it’s eliminated and passed through the body naturally. Treatments are clinically proven safe and effective to get rid of stubborn fat cells. Many patients compare truSculpting treatments to a hot stone massage. MV: Why did you select truSculpting instead of the alternative systems that are available? Dr. Buchanan: We chose truSculpting for a variety of reasons but, in particular, because of its ability to tighten and improve skin tone, as well as to eliminate stubborn fat cells. Also, truSculpting is usually less expensive. MV: I imagine that patients enjoy the peace of mind that comes from the fact that their truSculpting treatments actually take place in a medical physician’s facility.
HALF THE COST OF COOLSCULPTING Abdomen & Flanks: $1,000 Neck & Chin: $300 Arms: Starting at $500 Legs: Starting at $500 Dr. Buchanan: Yes. As with any treatment, patients often have some level of apprehension. Patients seem to experience a peace of mind from knowing that we have a medical provider on site. MV: Patients express excitement about their clothes fitting better after treatment. Describe your patients’ newfound self-confidence. Dr. Buchanan: Patients share with us their excitement in fitting into clothing that they haven’t worn in years, especially their skinny jeans. We have had several women tell us that they will now wear sleeveless shirts after receiving treatments on their arms, which both eliminated stubborn fat and tightened their skin. MV: Describe how truSculpting can reduce cellulite. Dr. Buchanan: Many truSculpting patients have reported that in addition to the elimination of stubborn fat cells, they have also observed a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.
MV: truSculpting can also tighten saggy skin. Explain. Dr. Buchanan: Unlike alternative sculpting treatments that use cold to eliminate fat cells, the gentle heat generated by truSculpting can actually help to tighten the skin by reducing saggy skin. This tightening of the skin is a major advantage over other treatments. MV: We’ve also learned that patients often seek treatment as couples, groups of friends, sisters, and mother/daughters. Dr. Buchanan: That’s correct. Much to our surprise, we have hosted several treatment “parties.” It has helped lessen the minor apprehension that some people may experience with the treatment. Aside from that, patients seemed to genuinely enjoy themselves. We encourage friends and family to encourage and support each other with these treatments. You have our assurance that we will do everything in our power to make this a memorable event for everyone involved. MV: What are some of the most commonly asked questions raised by new patients considering truSculpting, and how do you respond? Dr. Buchanan: The most common questions we get are: Does it hurt? And does this really work? truSculpting treatments do not hurt. During the treatment, the temperature of your skin will rise but will remain comfortable. There may be some slight discomfort, but truSculpting is effective, safe, and the results are even and consistent. Treatments can be compared to having a hot stone massage. It absolutely works! You do have to make sure you are drinking 64 ounces of water a day to be able to flush out the eliminated fat cells from your system. You should also continue your diet and exercise plan to maximize your treatment benefits. MV: How has truSculpting encouraged your patients to improve their overall lifestyle? Dr. Buchanan: They have gained more self-confidence from looking better and feeling better, which further motivates patients to eat more healthy and exercise more regularly. Patients seem to take a greater interest in their overall health, which we find encouraging. MV: What is the best way for our Continued on page 2A ...

readers to learn more about your family medicine practice and truSculpting? Dr. Buchanan: Call Ashley at 865-675-1593, ext. 224 for more information or to set up your free consultation appointment. MV: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Dr. Buchanan: We have been performing truSculpting procedures for almost three years with excellent results. Most clients have seen improvement in hard-to-treat areas that dieting and exercise don’t seem to help, particularly the abdomen and flanks. It has also been personally exciting to observe the improved sense of self-esteem and self-confidence on the part of our patients, which frequently encourages them to make other healthier lifestyle choices. Reporting Suspicious Activity

ost 256, 2nd Vice Commander Philip Boruszewski served with the Coast Guard and was stationed in Memphis, TN. His career with the Coast Guard gave him an extensive knowledge of the Mississippi River; then later in his dedicated career, he segued into the Coast Guard’s Homeland Security program where he specialized in the subject, “Suspicious Activity Reporting”. Speaking to fellow American Legion members, Mr. Boruszewski gave a detailed briefing of the upper & lower Mississippi River jurisdictions which include 652 navigational miles with multiple locks and dams. On the subject of Suspicious Activity Reporting he explained to his fellow Legionnaires that with hostilities all around us today, it’s extremely important to stay on your guard, be alert and relay any information that could be important to authorities. He
gave the group examples of suspicious activities and many links of phone numbers, websites and one notable reporting method which is Tennessee’s Mobile App: SafeTN. With SafeTN, you can anonymously report suspicious or criminal behavior and other safety concerns. You can do this by reporting observed threats, behaviors, or actions. Here is an example of some of the common behaviors and incidents to report: assault, sexual misconduct, bragging about an upcoming planned attack, threats of violence or planned violence, physical injury or harm to self or others. This mobile application is a secure, open door communication platform where citizens can send in tips and access useful resources to help keep their schools and community safe. April Highlights
S
pring is a time of renewal when we witness new leaves starting to show on trees and bushes and colorful spring blooms putting on a beautiful show. Here in Knoxville, dogwood blooms are celebrated all month long with color finally coming back to the landscape, brightening our surroundings and lifting our spirits. And activity is picking up in the area as more people are receiving the vaccine and the pandemic is subsiding. Restaurants, event venues and travel options are slowly opening up again which is welcomed after a long year of restrictions. I know I get energized and inspired in spring to make some changes to my interior and exterior décor, and although we have been making renovations all last year, I still like to brighten up my rooms with a touch of spring. Sometimes all it takes is to add a nice colorful spring floral or maybe just change out some pillows on the sofa. And my outdoor landscape is energized with color from azaleas, dogwoods and ornamental flowering trees as well as spring blooms like tulips and daffodils. After a year of staying at home, your rugs and Oriental carpets might be in need of a thorough Everything Knoxville is now out on distribution. Visit online at cleaning. Could This Happen to Your Family? W
By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA
ell, it happened again. I got a call from an adult daughter whose dad had just died, and she and her four siblings could not find the will. I knew her dad, and we agreed that there was no way he would have left them hanging like that. He was an organized, methodical man. Her mom had already passed, and there was literally no one to ask. They turned his house upside down, visited several banks looking for a safe deposit box, and finally had to hire an attorney to help them get the daughter established as an executor. You can imagine how hard this was for the family, trying to plan a funeral and contain their grief, while feeling adrift from knowing what their dad’s final wishes really were. I wish I could say I’ve never seen this scenario play out before, but that wouldn’t be true. So here’s my chance to be your little nudge to ensure your family doesn’t find themselves in this same tragic predicament. I suggest you: • Get your legal planning done NOW, including an updated will, financial powers of attorney and healthcare directives. • Tell your executor where your original will is kept. (They cannot probate a copy; it must be the original) • If your will is in a safe deposit box, make the executor a signatory and give them a key. • If your kids will inherit pre-tax IRA money, put a note on your will that says “Stop! Do nothing until you talk to a qualified CPA or tax professional”. You can’t un-ring the tax bell if they make a wrong move. • Check your beneficiary designations on all IRA’s and 401k’s and make sure you have named primary and back-up beneficiaries to keep those accounts out of your probate estate. We’ve also created a Sound Solutions Checklist to help you inventory your personal, financial and legal affairs and give your family a lighted path to follow when that day comes. It’s yours; free, to download at www.marshwealth.com/checklist. Trust me, they’ll thank you for it.

Like a Garage For Your Family Boat
T
By Tom Irmen
he 2021 boating season is about to get underway and so is the season of endless boat detailing if you don’t own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. But it wasn’t until multiple boat owners on our community dock in Rarity Bay installed the Touchless Boat Cover that we made the decision to make the investment by redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Previously when we arrived at our dock for a day on the lake, we had to first clear away the cobwebs from the sides of our boat. Then we removed the straps that secured our boat cover and then removed the cover. We shook the cover off to shake off the spiders that remained before folding the cover and placing it in our dock box. We would wash the bird and spider droppings off the cover when we returned. Before we had started to wipe the cobwebs and spider
droppings from the now exposed topside areas of our boat, the boat owners in the slip across from ours arrived. They pressed their key fob; their Touchless Cover was fully raised in 30 seconds or less. They lowered their boat lift, started their outboard engine and were off in 5 minutes or less. On a recent outing on the lake, we pressed our key fob. While our Touchless Cover was rising, we lowered our boat lift. We turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. And yes, we’re using our boat far more than before.
And the spiders? I can’t explain it. They’ve mostly disappeared. And our newly detailed boat looks just like it did on the showroom floor in 2007. Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today. The large covered and screened deck and open grilling porch provide an abundance of outdoor living space. The great room and kitchen feature soaring 10’ and 11’ ceilings, and there will be tray or coffered ceilings in all other rooms. The elegant and functional granite kitchen design includes a pantry and the large, cabinetted laundry room features a laundry sink, space for an optional “drop zone” with cabinets and bench or second refrigerator. The master bath can be designed as shown with a large tub – or a very large marble walk-in (no curb) shower with seat and drying area with seat. Bedrooms 2 and 3 enjoy a “Jack & Jill” bath with tub/shower or large shower. The open floor plan in the dining room offers extra area to expand for larger get-togethers with family and friends – which we have all missed this last year! There is also space in the dining room for an optional built-in granite wet bar or buffet (or this space can be allocated to the laundry room.) “Spring Awakens What God Has Put to Sleep!”
“S
pring awakens what God has put to sleep!” That was the verse on a counted cross-stitch picture I made for my mother-in-law many years ago. It served as a great reminder then, but even more so today with the COVID-19 pandemic putting a halt to life as we had known it pre-virus. Like no other time of year, spring gives us all hope for so many reasons! Just when the cold, dreary days of winter seem to be getting the best of us, we see those buds on the trees and the daffodils pushing up from the ground getting ready to bloom. So, it will be with this pandemic. It has, indeed, been a long winter! Last Easter we never imagined that more than a year later we would still be dealing with this virus and continued social distancing, little or no travel, face masks and diligent hand washing. We may have been sleeping all these months but so many of us during this time have been regrouping, reorganizing, and relearning and that’s not such a bad thing. Now spring is here – literally and figuratively! The number of Covid 19 cases is way down and vaccines are being distributed all across the nation. This spring brings us all renewed hope of getting our lives back to “normal”. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, like most churches through this pandemic, has had Sunday services via YouTube and Zoom bible studies and social gatherings. It has truly been a very long winter in the life of our church! But this forced hiatus has given
Donna Navratil, Charter Member Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church
us the opportunity to get some much-needed work done. While everyone has been away, a group of contractors and church members have been busy transforming the inside of our building to better meet the needs of our growing congregation and our community. Our bathrooms have been made handicap accessible and our pastor and administrative assistant have been moved into larger office spaces. Heating and air conditioning have been updated to more efficient systems. And our kitchen and social hall have both been enlarged. Soon this long winter of the COVID-19 virus will be over, and Shepherd of the Lake will be welcoming back its members to a newly refurbished space. While we have all been “sleeping” through this virus, God has done wondrous things for so many of us for which we should all be grateful. At Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, we are feeling especially blessed right now for all the changes in our little congregation. Watch in the weeks ahead when COVID-19 restrictions are no more, and we can safely gather in groups again. Then we will invite the community in to see what has sprung up at Shepherd of the Lake! Hope to see you all soon! Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church 143 Chota Center Loudon, TN 37774 865-816-4756 www.shepherdofthelaketn.org

parkey is a 7-month old, 32-pound, Terrier mix. He is a little timid, but he is trying hard to learn to trust people. His tail wags, he thrives on attention, and he loves giving and receiving hugs. He loves to play and is dog-friendly. Sparkey is very submissive and needs a quiet home where he can blossom. He is gentle, smart, eager to learn and affectionate but easily overwhelmed- Do you need a companion that will be your best friend? Sparkey’s your boy! Daffodil is a sweet 2-year old spayed female. She is a medium size (approximately 54 pounds) mixed breed sweetheart. She loves going on walks and is pretty good walking with a leash. She is a tail wagging, butt wiggling, happy girl who basks in any and all attention and loves her treats! She jumps in your lap for attention and loves people. Daffodil is heartworm positive and will be undergoing treatment soon. When coming to the Shelter to meet a dog, please remember their true personality may not show through immediately in the shelter environment. They may consider their kennel a safe place and be uncomfortable when taken out. This doesn’t mean they aren’t sweet, loving dogs. It
just means they are unsure or scared in this environment. Take some time to meet each dog, let them get used to you for a few moments before you take him/her for a walk around the shelter grounds. Once you get your new pet home, allow them time to become adjusted to their new life. Wally should have been named Mr. Lover. He is just a ball of affection. Wally is an 18-month-old white/brown Long Hair Tabby with an adorable pink nose, who came in as a stray. He is beyond friendly and enjoys human attention like you would not believe. Ear rubs, head scratches, you name it, he likes it. He has a super soft coat and loves to be brushed with a soft bristled brush. He does not seem cat reactive and has been pretty much indifferent to the few dogs he has seen. He will make a great addition in your home as a house cat. Juniper is a soft, adorable kitten who has been with us for a few weeks. She was brought in as a stray with a cold so we had to makes sure she was healthy before posting her for adoption...and she is rarin’ to go! She’s a white/ brown Tabby about 4 months old with a short coat that is very dense/thick. She is very loving, likes to be cuddled, and adores playing! Juniper would be best in a household that understands that kittens go through many stages as they grow! Miss Kitty is an independent senior who is very set in her ways. She’s around 7 years old, is a gorgeous brown Tabby, and will do best in a home where she is the only boss, I mean only pet. She likes attention and affection on her terms. She wants to patrol her home and have laps to jump into on demand. She gets squirmy when picked up

and has virtually no tolerance for other animals. She was probably raised as an only pet, and was surrendered to the shelter because of landlord issues. She is looking for humans that will treat her like the queen that she is. All adoptions include spay/neuter, age appropriate testing and vaccinations (including Rabies), worming, and microchip (including registration). Cats are litter box trained. Microchips ($10) may be purchased by the public during shelter hours. We need your help at the shelter! If you can help clean, feed, walk dogs and/or do laundry, please consider volunteering. Shelter Staff or other volunteers will be happy to train you. Assistance is particularly needed in the morning when the Shelter Staff is getting the shelter to open. Would you consider becoming a foster for puppies, kittens, or adult dogs and cats? Some just need a break from Shelter life, some are awaiting their turn on a rescue transport, and some just need some love. For more information, look under Fostering on our website, www. hile we all know a thing or two about how salons operated the past twelve months during the time of COVID, how will salon operations look Post COVID? It is fair at this time to discuss life Post COVID. With rapidly diminishing numbers of active cases, and more and more people being vaccinated, most people are becoming quite comfortable managing their risks regarding The COVID.
One of the most effective pieces of PPE (personal protection equipment) used in the salon this past year has been the plexi glass partition separating our nail technicians from their guests. This was essential as our nail technicians and their guests are 18-24 inches apart and directly face to face. Our team of nail techs has indicated that they may want to keep using this partition Post COVID, especially during the cold and flu season. Multiple dispensers of hand sanitizers throughout

the salon will also likely survive Post COVID, as clean hands seem to be the greatest defense against spreading cold and flu. No signatures on credit cards also seem to be gaining traction as Brian K. Whitehead a policy to survive Post Managing Partner COVID, as this drastically The Village Salon reduces the amount of possibly contaminated surfaces our guests come The Village Salon 222 Village Square in contact with. in Tellico Village Another protocol that will 865-458-9332 likely remain in place is our thevillagesalon@aol.com insistence on not serving sick guests or allowing sick teammates to work. Common sense should tell us all that if we are not feeling well and might possibly be contagious, it is a good idea to reschedule our salon visit or take the day off from work. Continued use of facial coverings however, does not seem to have much of a future in the Post COVID world. Many guests as well as operators tired long ago of the facial coverings and will look forward to the day where they are no longer a conversation piece. We all look forward to the Post COVID world, and will embrace it with open arms, and hopefully that day is sooner rather than later.

LIBRARY CORNER
I
Those Who Plant a Tree, Plants Hope
n 2010 the Friends of the Tellico Village Library Board of Directors had a fundraising dream to raise money to help pay for the operating expenses of the Library by asking patrons to buy leaves for a Giving Tree to be displayed in the lobby. The Tellico Village Woodworkers took up the call and built a beautiful tree with enough branches for 225 leaves showing donor financial support. Since the Library Giving Tree was planted, the tree has blossomed with over 150 leaves. It is Spring again in East Tennessee, and as we look at the beauty surrounding us
– colorful flowers, budding trees, glorious sunrises and sunsets, we should consider now to be an opportunity to branch out and have our giving tree continue to bud and bloom. The Board would like to encourage you to consider buying a leaf. There are three choices of leaves on the tree, bronze, silver and gold. Perhaps a Spring neighborhood challenge would be a fun way to raise money for the Tree. Each neighborhood would receive a leaf and will bloom on a special limb with other neighborhoods that have met the Challenge. Some of the
neighborhoods who have raised $500 for a leaf are: Saligugi Mud Turtle, Seminole Wild Bunch, Coyatee Quakers, and Saloli Squirrels, to name a few. If you are considering donating a portion of your upcoming stimulus check to a worthy cause, please consider buying a leaf and helping the Library. For more information on The Giving Tree leaves donation, please contact Elizabeth Hall. She will be glad to assist you with any questions you may have. Her phone number is 865-657-9542 and her e-mail address is ejhall61@gmail.com.

Spring 2021…
Fashion Sense
April, 2021, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 13A
A Season of Change! A
hhh... Spring 2021 has finally arrived and we are all SO ready! A season of rebirth, hope and finally renewal… not only of friendships but of family we have been isolated from. In our case, it’s our customers who are now feeling more confident about visiting The Lily Pad, where it’s easy to social distance, and where you know our COVID-19 protocol for your safety is our #1 concern! It’s as though the designers knew we would need an uplifting season in fashion, and wow, have they delivered! They’ve put a modern twist on the traditional spring colors and paired them with the vivid brights to refresh and revive us for spring. Three very adaptable pastels are on one end of our palette for spring and can be combined with any other color in the spectrum. Placid blue, like a picture-perfect, tranquil sky, induces a sense of calmness, while violet tulip, a romantic, vintage purple, evokes a wistful nostalgia. Hemlock, a summery, ornament green, provides a decorative touch that’s very different from the greens of recent seasons. Pair any of these pastels with a bolder hue for a fresh beginning to spring! As the weather warms, so do the colors, with spring beginning softly, leading to vibrant orange and dazzling blue for the summer months. Don’t be shy about playing around with color – remember, fashion is fun! Spring is a season of change… and new beginnings! We look forward to being your Spring 2021 resource for all of the fabulous, fun colors and styles available this season!

Step up Your Shoe Storage 14A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, April, 2021

eals, flats, wedges, strappy, platform, sandals, boots. Yes, ladies, we have a wide variety of shoe styles because there are so many different occasions that require different kinds of footwear, clothing and accessories. Unfortunately, without dedicated storage in a closet, shoes are usually piled on the floor where they get kicked around, stepped on and need replacing more often. Properly storing shoes in your closet will help display your favorite footwear while saving space, time and money. No matter what the size of your closet, these options will help you step up your shoe storage.
Shoe Shelves
Using dedicated solid shelves keep shoes in top form and are easily seen when organized by type and color. To maximize space, place one shoe forward and the other backwards, which allows four pairs of women’s shoes on a 24” long shelf. This placement will also let you see the shoe and heal height at a glace. To better protect shoes, they can be placed in their original boxes or see-through plastic keepers. The same 24” shelf will only fit three shoe or plastic boxes side-by-side, but they can be stacked two or three high.
TAILORED
Slanted Shelves with Shoe Fence
Slanted shelves with a low decorative rail in the front also keeps shoes visible and organized and adds a decorative touch to a closet. However, if you have a large number of shoes and a small closet, slanted shelves take up more space than flat shelves because they are hung at an angle. This reduces the number of shoes that can be stored in the same space.
TO THE WAY YOU LIVE
Baskets for Flip-Flops
It’s spring and women love their flip-flops! Storing them in a pretty basket and clipping pairs together will save valuable space on your shoe shelves. The basket can fit on the floor or the top shelf of your closet.

Shoe Cubbies
Each side-by-side mini bin houses one pair of shoes. This makes for easy storage and minimizes dust. However, individual cubbies take up more closet space than dedicated shelving. Today, as ever growing numbers of homeowners and businesses are choosing hand-crafted Oriental rugs to replace wallto-wall carpeting, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning has once again demonstrated its talent for innovation. Superior has built a state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique that safely and affordably cleans and revitalizes your family’s Oriental rugs. We hope you will find our recent interview with Kerry both informative and instructional. MV: There’s no question that Oriental

rugs are replacing wall-to-wall carpeting in many American homes and businesses. Aside from their obvious visual differences, how do Oriental rugs and carpets differ? Kerry: Conventional carpeting is machine made and tufted with synthetic material, although cotton and wool are sometimes used in higher end wall-to-wall carpeting. Genuine Oriental rugs, on the other hand, are created using natural fibers such as cotton, wool and silk. These handcrafted rugs are woven one at a time, with artisans paying individual attention to detail, color, pattern, and the motif of each piece of art they are creating. Each rug tells a story based on its origin and time in history in which it was created. These rugs are truly art for your floor. MV: Does the use of all-natural fibers and organic dyes in the hand-crafting of Oriental rugs require a different cleaning process than that traditionally used on conventional carpeting? Kerry: Absolutely. Because of the use of natural fibers, vegetable and plant dyes, meticulous care must be taken in order to ensure that dyes remain stable during the

entire cleaning process. While wall-towall carpeting can be cleaned with high heat and strong cleaning agents, Oriental rugs must be washed using pure deionized cold water and natural fiber safe washing agents, then thoroughly rinsed, and hung to dry in a temperature-controlled drying room. MV: Alex Zahir, owner of AZ International, LLC Rug Gallery, whose family has hand-crafted fine Oriental rugs in his native Afghanistan for three generations, expressed his surprise at your extraordinary level of knowledge related to the Oriental rug industry. How did you gain that knowledge? Kerry: Our company is certified by a national certification board called the IICRC. We attend classes and seminars regularly to learn and keep up with the latest in rug washing knowledge and advancements in technology. I also frequently collaborate with Oriental rug specialists like Alex. MV: Why is knowledge of the rug industry important in washing these Oriental rugs? Kerry: You must know and understand the construction, fiber, and dye content to correctly and safely wash each rug. Many heirloom quality rugs are passed down from generation to generation. Oriental rug buyers often invest a great deal of time and money in selecting just the right designs, colors, sizes, and natural materials they want in their rugs. You and your rugs deserve the decades of experience that we can offer to ensure that your rugs are thoroughly and safely cleaned. Oriental rug washing, like rug weaving, is an art form in itself. MV: How did your knowledge and experience in Oriental rug washing help you in the design and creation of your Farragut based rug washing boutique? Kerry: After visiting numerous other rug washing facilities nationally and attending a variety of schools and seminars, I decided to create a state of the art rug washing boutique featuring our proprietary 11 step washing process designed to provide a rug washing experience unavailable anywhere else. In fact, as advancements are made in our industry, we continue to invest in this new technology to deliver even better results. Recently we purchased a Marinator Decon System which cleans your rugs from the inside out by moving up to 80 gallons of deionized washing solution per minute through rugs to safely clean those difficult inner and
back sides of your rugs. We also recently purchased and installed a Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor that replaces the wash pits used by the competition. The Centrum only uses clean deionized water to wash your rugs. The best way to differentiate the two systems is to compare them to your choice of a morning shower or a bath. With a shower you always bathe in clean water. MV: You have also earned a reputation for safely removing pet stains and odors. Explain. Kerry: Most rugs can be safely and successfully cleaned in our state-of-the-art rug washing boutique. However, the presence of pet urine or other animal accidents can compromise the dyes and degrade the natural fiber makeup of your rugs. Based on the construction of the rug, 100% removal of urine cannot always be guaranteed, although using our proprietary washing process, we have had good results. So the presence of pet urine does not necessarily mean that your rug is ruined. Time is of the essence, so act quickly when an unexpected accident occurs. MV: Lest we forget, Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning also cleans home and commercial carpeting and upholstery. Kerry: We not only wash rugs, but we have mobile state-of-the-art equipment to clean your wall-to-wall carpet as well as upholstery and tile in your home or business. Like our rug washing boutique, our mobile washing systems use water treated by Kinetico. Clean carpets and rugs start with pure water. MV: Kerry, how can people learn more about Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning? Kerry: You can find out about us by visiting our website, www.superiorofknoxville.com, email us at info@superiorofknoxville.com, call or text us at 865-680-1450, or look us up on Facebook. MV: Anything else that you would like to share with our readers? Kerry: All throughout our 37 years in business, our company has remained committed to delivering the highest level of quality and customer satisfaction in the industry. Hundreds of satisfied customers give testimony to that fact. “Quality plus service equals superior value… guaranteed!” For a truly Superior level of clean call: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning 865.691.5686 www.superiorofknoxville.com

Hello Spring! It's finally spring! For me, springtime inspires brighter colors with little touches of whimsy throughout the home, especially for my tablescapes. Here's my tips for a fun, yet effortless dining space. Wall Color - Whether opting for a new pop of color, a soft neutral, or even wallpaper, your walls make a huge difference in the mood the space.
Upcoming Schedule for April April 23: Sherrill Hills 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM April 20: Little Italy 5:45 PM to 8:45 PM
Lighting - The chandelier is often the focal point of a dining area. This is a perfect spot for dimmers to add a bit of ambiance and romance. Textiles - This is a great way to bring in some seasonal color - don't forget to layer! On the right we combined texture with function to enhance the table. Centerpiece - You can't go wrong with a beautiful floral arrangement, especially for spring. I like to keep a single object in the center for everyday and then add additional flair for holidays and hosting. Window Treatments -The room on the right utilizes soft woven woods and faux iron designs in the transoms to enhance the view but also cut down on the mid day sun. Beautiful and functional.

Make Plans to Really Enjoy Your Home’s Outdoor Living Spaces in 2021
A breath of fresh air for your home Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com
G
et ready to let the great out-of-doors in! The sun is getting stronger, and the days are getting longer. Before you know it, summer will be here, and with it will come the endless ways to have fun right in your own backyard. But are you really enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their full potential? If your outdoor spaces don’t include retractable screen solutions, the answer is most likely no. Here’s why. Homeowners across the country are making significant investments in the design and creation of outdoor “rooms,” including porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful accent lighting, and even weatherproof artwork. However, the hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners and their guests from enjoying their new outdoor spaces to their full potential. Retractable screens provide the perfect answer to this dilemma. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience, allowing people to enjoy the outof-doors during hot summer days while extending the amount of time they can spend on patios and decks, where biting insects can become a nuisance in the evenings. Large, motorized screens are the perfect
solution for blending function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of your home, thereby remaining truly hidden when fully retracted. And the best part about using retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your home’s views or esthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of these retractable screen solutions can be incorporated into virtually any architectural style. Increasing in popularity is the availability of a variety of custom color and wood grain finishes that help to blend your screens into your existing interior or exterior color schemes. Also, the screens can be programmed to lower and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s general building automation system, allowing the screens to come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection is needed. For more information about retractable screen options that will allow you and your family to fully enjoy your home’s outdoor living spaces this year, visit www.tennesseescreens.com. n behalf of the entire Hunt family, as we begin our 9th year in business, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for both your support and encouragement since we launched Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village. In addition to offering incredible savings on thousands of square feet of quality, name brand, pre-owned furniture, home décor, lamps, Oriental and area rugs, and art from homes in area lake and golf front communities, including Tellico Village and Rarity Bay, Premiere Consignment also provides the opportunity to sell your unused personal items through our eBay

store. We are the perfect venue to take full advantage of this continuously growing selling phenomenon. The key to success in selling many of your household items at the highest price is to target a marketplace with the largest number of potential buyers. Through the power of eBay’s millions of buyers, products can often sell much faster and at a much higher price than you might expect – and with very little effort on your part. Here’s how it works: Potential items are evaluated at our intake area; accepted items receive a tracking number. Those items are then professionally photographed. Item description, pricing, and photographs are
entered on eBay’s website. As items are sold, they’re carefully packed and shipped to the winning bidder. You then receive payment for your sold items! To get positive results on eBay, items need to be presented in as professional a manner as possible. Premiere Consignment has made a significant investment in photographic and lighting equipment, computer software, and hardware to bring the power of eBay to you. Our expertise ensures quality photos with well-written descriptions. And because buyers are often reluctant to purchase from sellers with limited records or no track record at all, Premiere Consignment’s high eBay seller
rating is another plus. With the quality and quantity of items we sell on eBay, we give potential buyers the peace of mind that comes from selecting a seller with an established track record. To learn how to take advantage of a world of opportunity to sell many of your unused household items through Premiere Consignment, powered by eBay, call us at 865-458-9721 or visit us at 320 Lakeside Plaza in Loudon today. o what can you do to protect yourself, friends and family you might ask? The experts at Gent Heating & Cooling and RGF Environmental Group have the answer. RGF Environmental Group Inc. of Riviera Beach, Florida, has a 35+ year history of providing the world with the safest air, water and food without the use of chemicals. RGF manufactures over 500 environmental products on its 9 acre campus, home to over 130,000 square feet of manufacturing and distribution facilities. Perhaps RGF’s most exciting and re-
cent innovations are their REME HALO residential and commercial air purification system that has been shown to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly known as the coronavirus 2019 or COVID-19. Based on a study which commenced in March 2020, and overseen by Dr. James Marsden, Executive Director of Science and Technology at RGF, Dr. Marsden stated that “the study results show the REME HALO to be effective in combating the COVID-19 virus and a valuable solution to immediately improve the Indoor Air Quality of residential and commercial
spaces and protect occupants against exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus.” The independent third-party study focused on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 using RGF’s proprietary REME HALO air purification system with PHI-Cell technology. The testing was performed at the Innovative Bioanalysis Laboratories in Cypress, California. The virus was nebulized into a large 1,280 cubic foot chamber representing a real-world, air-conditioned office or home. With the REME HALO operating inside the chamber, the virus was reduced on contact resulting in a 99.9% reduction of the virus within the simulated real-world space, reducing the risk of person-to-person infection by respiratory particles and aerosols. This is great news. But the even better news is that you can have the REME HALO air purification system installed in your home today for probably less than you might have imagined. RGF strongly recommends that their
REME HALO system only be installed by a licensed HVAC contractor. In East Tennessee and the Tellico Lake area the REME HALO air purification system is installed by Gent Heating & Cooling. Gent Heating & Cooling owner, Shane Gent, and his team of highly trained technicians, have earned a well deserved reputation for quality workmanship, professionalism and fairness for over 20+ years. Gent has the REME HALO system in stock and ready for installation. Gent Heating & Cooling is a full-service HVAC company specializing in existing and new residential and commercial heating and air-conditioning work, including sales, installation and service of all brands. Highlights Of The American Rescue Plan Act Of 2021
H
ere is a summary of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 (H.R. 1319) for individuals. The bill was signed into law by President Biden on 3/11/2021. Special information that may impact individuals who received unemployment in 2020 Taxpayers who received unemployment in 2020 and have an Adjusted Gross Income of $150,000 or less, the first $10,200 of unemployment received is considered non-taxable. Adjusted Gross Income determination is made without including the unemployment compensation received. This is only in effect for 2020. This does not impact your unemployment benefits received in 2021. Our firm can provide future guidance to our clients that may be impacted. INDIVIDUAL TAX PROVISIONS IN 2021 Many of these tax provisions are for Tax Year 2021 only. Continuation of these items will require congress to extend these provisions. 2021 RECOVERY REBATES As many individuals received Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks) in 2020 and early 2021, another round of rebates started to be distributed mid-March. The eligible credit is $1,400 for single taxpayers and $2,800 for married filing joint filers. A credit of $1,400 is also available for eligible dependents. The income limits and phaseout for the recovery rebates will be determined by your 2020 tax return (if it has been filed), otherwise they will default to your 2019 tax return. There are a number of online calculators that can be used to determine the projected amount of the third stimulus check. If your 2020 return has been filed, you will need your Adjusted Gross Income amount, which can be found on line 11 of Form 1040. Otherwise, you will need your 2019 Adjusted Gross Income, which can be found on line 8b of Form 1040. Here is a link to a calculator to calculate your recovery rebate: https://www.forbes.com/advisor/personal-finance/third-stimulus-check-calculator/ CHILD TAX CREDIT (CURRENTLY IN PLACE FOR 2021 ONLY) The Child Tax Credit has been increased to $3,000 per child ($3,600 for certain children under 6). The child tax credit is now applicable to children under 18. The child tax credit in 2020 was $2,000 and applicable for children under 17. ADVANCE PAYMENTS OF THE CHILD TAX CREDIT Along with changes increasing the Child Tax Credit, the Department of Treasury will also begin sending advance payments of the credit. This means you will get a monthly amount during the year instead of getting the full credit when doing your tax return. Affected taxpayer’s should take special note of this change. This means your traditional tax refund may be lower starting in 2021 or the amount you traditionally owe may be more than usual. The IRS will send you a tax form reporting all advance payments you received. This form will be required to complete your return. So be sure and retain it as you will need it to complete your 2021 income tax return. For children born during the tax year, you will not receive an Advance Payment in the first year; you will receive the credit with your tax return. DEPENDENT CARE BENEFITS (CURRENTLY IN PLACE FOR 2021 ONLY) The Dependent Care Credit has multiple changes in place for 2021. 1. The calculation of the credit is now 50 percent of the eligible expenses. a. The calculation traditionally has been 35 percent of eligible expenses. 2. The amount of eligible expenses is now $8,000 for one qualifying child or $16,000 for two or more qualifying children.
Submitted by WarrenJackson
a. The amount of eligible expenses was $3,000 for one qualifying child or $6,000 for two or more qualifying children. 3. There is still an income phaseout for the credit. It was increased from starting to phase out at $15,000, to beginning to phase out at $125,000. 4. Starting in 2021, the credit is now a refundable credit. The credit traditionally was only allowed if the taxpayer had sufficient tax liability. Starting in 2021, the amount in excess of the tax liability will be included in the tax refund. Example of how this impacts an individual. The credit now goes from a max of $1,050 for one qualifying child (35 percent of $3,000) or $2,100 for two or more qualifying children (35 percent of $6,000) to $4,000 for one qualifying child (50 percent of $8,000) and $8,000 (50 percent of $16,000). EMPLOYER PROVIDED DEPENDENT CARE BENEFITS (CURRENTLY IN PLACE FOR 2021 ONLY) Dependent care benefits offered through an employer (reducing taxable income) have been increased for 2021.
The amount of dependent care benefits that can be excluded has been increased from $5,000 to $10,500 per family. EARNED INCOME TAX CREDIT EXPANDED (CURRENTLY IN PLACE FOR 2021 ONLY) The Earned Income Tax Credit has been expanded to most individuals 19 and over instead of 25 and older and will no longer have a maximum age of 65. The credit income limits and phaseout have also been increased. The credit has also been expanded to certain married filing separate filers. STUDENT LOAN FORGIVENESS (FOR TAX YEARS 2021-2025 CURRENTLY) Certain student loan debt forgiven between in 2021 through 2025 can be excluded from gross income. Currently, the amount of student loan forgiveness is considered taxable income. The tax professionals at WarrenJackson can assist you in analyzing if and how you might be impacted by these changes. April In the Garden
S
by
Lisa Grugin
pring is in the air! Well, it is today. Who knows what tomorrow will bring. That is the main thing I want you to remember as we go into April: Mother Nature is very unpredictable! Our last frost can be anywhere from late March to May. The average is April 15th, but please wait on tender plants or be prepared to protect them. We still have Blackberry winter and Dogwood winter to go! What are things that you can do this month? There is a big list! • Number one, of course, is the monthly checkup. Take a long walk around your yard and give your plants an upclose-and-personal look. What has freeze damage? What has insect damage? What has started to sprout fungus? What needs to be pruned, divided, moved, or composted? What has changed that will mean a difference in your gardening? Look up, down, and all around, then make your plans. Also, think about what is realistic for you to accomplish by yourself and what you will need help with. Contact lawn services and landscapers soon because they are already getting very busy. • Let me talk just a little about landscapers. Please do not hire someone unless you have done some checking. Your landscape has a huge impact on the look of your home, so you want to make sure the person you are hiring is reputable. Look at photos and check reviews, but please be careful of Nextdoor and other places where it is easy for a nasty person to ruin the reputation of a good company. • When you are looking for insects, please remember that not every bug is a bad bug. There are many that can help you out! If you do see damage, however, it is best to start treating before you have an infestation. Call if you have questions, or bag the little critters and bring them in. • Last year was a fungal nightmare because of all the rain. If you had problems with some of your plants last
Spring IS IN THE AIR!
year, keep an eye on those and start treating if you see fresh signs. Those that are susceptible to black spot, rust, powdery mildew, etc. may benefit from a systemic product. • You can get your planting beds ready even if you are waiting to plant. Add compost or aged manure to beds to up the nutrient level. Get weeds out, but do not apply a pre-emergent if you are going to plant seeds. I have become a fan of worm castings, so you can also add a thin layer of that to the top of your beds. • I suggest planting flower beds in stages because some plants are more tolerant of cool temperatures than others. Petunias, geraniums, lantana, and some other annuals will handle a light frost. Begonias and impatiens turn to mush. • Did you plant containers last year? If so, get those ready to go. If your planters are small, dump the soil out and rinse the pot. If the plants had any fungal problems, mix a tablespoon of bleach into a gallon of water and pour it into the pot, then rinse it out. Refill the container with fresh, good quality soil. I’m a fan of Happy Frog, but any good quality soil will do. If your containers are large or have permanent occupants (shrubs, perennials,
OPEN MONDAY-SATURDAY 9-6 & SUNDAY 1-5 9885 HIGHWAY 11E, LENOIR CITY, TN 37772 WWW.MEADOWVIEWGREENHOUSE.COM • 865-986-7229 etc.), top dress them with a couple of inches of compost or fresh soil. A 1/4” to 1/2” of worm castings or some mycorrhizae will help these, too. After 3-5 years, you really need to take everything out and start all over. Remember to NEVER use ground soil in containers. Potting soil is for pots, garden soil is for gardens. You cannot substitute one for the other! • How about vegetables? You are safe planting any of the cool season vegetables, but wait until mid-month for tomatoes, peppers, and corn. Super sweet varieties of corn should wait even longer, until the soil is around 70 degrees. This is usually early May. • Let’s talk a little about pruning. Prune spring blooming shrubs within a couple of weeks after they finish blooming. Older forsythia, quince, weigela, and lilacs can be severely pruned to rejuvenate them if needed. You can prune crepe myrtles as they start to leaf out if you have not already pruned them, but DO NOT commit crepe murder! Don’t cut bulbs back until after the foliage has yellowed so that
they can store up nutrients for next year. Please call us with questions. Don’t go out and start whacking! • This is also the time to fertilize if you haven’t done so already. Acid lovers need an acid type fertilize such as HollyTone. General purpose fertilizers will work on everything else. April 15th is your end date for fertilizing warm season grasses. • I want to put a quick plug in for the birds and other pollinators before I run out of space. Please plant at least part of your yard with plants that help them survive and lay off the toxic chemicals as much as possible. It is also baby bird season, so keep those feeders clean and full! We have new loads of plants and garden décor coming in almost every day. Stop by and see what is new! one are the days when you had to settle for a drab, oil-stained, cement-gray garage floor. Today, your garage floor can be as beautiful as any other room in your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 13 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. It is the toughest floor coating available and: • Stands up to the heat and friction of hot tires. • Protects the concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. The flooring also protects the concrete from the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage, which promote deterioration and cracking, • Resists chipping, peeling, fading or stains • Resists spills, including water, gasoline, oil, other auto fluids and paint thinner • Reduces the buildup of allergens, dust and dirt that cling to unfinished concrete • Cleans up easily; nothing sticks to the surface so spills are no problem. For general cleanup you only need a mop and water. • Comes with a 10-year warranty • Increases the value of your house The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more ‘finished’ and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. So to speak, we stepped away from our comfort zone and took a giant leap of faith.

We were not planning on making the physical move to Tennessee until we were ready for retirement. There are a lot of builders in this area that we could have chosen to build our house, but we were drawn to Keener Homes, Inc. After meeting with Kit Keener, we had a sense of reassurance that we would be secure building a home from 700 miles away. And so the process of building our home began in the early summer of 2019. As anyone who has had the privilege of building a home knows, there are a lot of questions that need answering. We worked with a team of skilled professionals who were available to meet with us on every occasion that we had the opportunity to come to TN. Our project manager, Derek Miller was indeed smart, reliable and efficient. Derek answered our calls and e-mails in a timely manner. He kept us up to date with pictures of the building process. He helped us to feel relaxed and assured that we were in good hands since he had a handle on every detail. We all know what the impact of Covid spring and summer 2020 had on all and in particular to travel opportunities. Nonetheless, the process of building our house never stalled or even slowed down. We arranged to meet with Keener’s flooring and plumbing and electrical teams virtually. We chose paint and granite and siding from NJ with the assist of Keener Home’s professionals. Through it all, we felt really supported and taken care of during some rather extraordinary times. www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759
The end result is that we are now living in a beautiful home that we designed and Keener Homes 218 Lakeside Plaza, Loudon, TN 37774 built for us. We love our home and are incredibly happy here thanks to the Keener Team. The only regret that we might have is that we didn’t do it sooner.

Watering
Y
By Marilyn Morete, President, WATeR
OU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Soon, spring temperatures will prompt us to water our lawns. Over watering our lawns damages the grass and potentially the lake. The key is to set your watering timer to odd/even days. If your home address number is odd, water on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. If your home address number is even, water on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. WATeR has outlined generally accepted best management practices (BMPs) for watering lawns that are supported by research from the UT’s Agricultural Extension Service. 1. Per your house number, only water on odd/ even days. 2. Water deeply twice a week. 3. Water between 3 - 9 a.m. 4. Turn off your automatic sprinkler system if it rains one inch (1”) or more per week. These four basic BMPs are meant to keep your lawn healthy, the lake free of excess chemicals that promote the growth of algae and unwanted vegetation, help balance water pressure in the Village and likely in other neighboring communities, and keep money in your pocket. Watering deeply means soaking the soil 4” – 6” inches deep. This practice promotes deep rooting of lawn grasses which reduces root burning from direct sunlight and preserves the root system when extended droughts occur. Avoid light, frequent watering because it will cause a shallow root system to form and your lawn will suffer from the burning sun and periods of drought. How does a homeowner determine the length of time it takes for his/her watering system to achieve a deep watering? An established lawn requires 1” to 1 ½” inches of water per week including rainfall or ½” to ¾” per irrigation period for two (2) periods per week. An easy way to figure out the amount of time you need to water your lawn to achieve the ½” to ¾” per period goal is to place three (3) 2”- 3” inch deep cans in one of your watering zones. Water your lawn until the water in the can reaches the desired level. Average the volume of water accumulated in the three (3) cans. The amount of time you need to achieve a deep watering goal is now known. You may have to increase or decrease your duration timer to maintain your deep watering time goal. Per your house number, set your timer to water 2 days per week on odd or even days. But, if rainfall is equal to or exceeds 1” inch per week, turn your timer off, save money and let “Mother Nature” water your lawn for free. After each deep watering, let the lawn thoroughly dry out. When you see your footprints on the lawn, it is time to water. Watering between 3 - 9 a.m. is ideal. First, in the early morning the wind is most calm. Strong day time breezes blow the water about and distribute it unevenly. Second, you limit the amount of time droplets are exposed to the sun. This reduces

the amount of water loss from evaporation. Third, watering earlier than 3 a.m. will leave water on the blades too long and can cause the growth of fungus. Low water pressure is a concern to many and is caused when most homeowners water lawns on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings. Simultaneous neighborhood demand for water puts enormous strain on the supply. An easy no-cost way to resolve this problem and maintain stable water pressure is for residents to water from 3 - 9 a.m. two (2) days a week on odd/even days. The result is a “balancing” effect on neighborhood water pressure. And, the amount of water available for showers and laundry later in the morning is increased. The odd/ even watering pattern has been adopted by many communities throughout the United States whether they live in a water rich area like ours or in a drought prone region. It is time to realize that if this didn’t make financial and management sense, people wouldn’t do it. Let’s implement the program in our neighborhoods. BMPs may require you to work with your irrigation service technician who may not fully understand BMPs for your lawn. Talk to your service provider technician when they set up your watering timer to establish a deep watering program per your house number on odd or even
days. Or, for best results, do it yourself! How useful are automatic rain sensors? They are designed to turn off your irrigation system if it is raining and avoid over watering. Great idea, but they commonly fail in about a year and must be replaced. The BMP is not to use the sensor and manually turn your timer off in heavy rain because the weekly goal of 1” to 1 ½” inches of water accumulates quickly. Over watering your lawn is an unnecessary expense and can damage the lawn with mold and diseases. In summary, the four (4) BMPs to effectively water your lawn can do the following: keep money in your pocket, sustain a healthy lawn, keep phosphorous and nitrogen out of the lake which decreases the risk for algae and unwanted vegetation, and balances water demands that decrease the risk for low water pressure for all residents. Spring is the perfect time to install Undercover Systems’ totally unique underdecking ceiling system under your home’s existing raised decks. This totally proprietary and patented underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, the searing summertime sun, and wintertime sleet and snow. “Spring is a great time to weatherproof all of your future out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you each step of the way, from consultation to project completion, until you are completely satisfied. And because each underdeck system we install is custom made by Undercover Systems specifically for your home, you can be assured of many years of reliable, trouble-free family enjoyment. Most competitive systems use generic, off the shelf components found at the big home improvement box stores. Undercover Systems’ gutters and not your home’s deck as with competitive systems. This promotes greater deck air circulation and deck longevity.” You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan. T
he Tellico Community Players first production of 2021, the drama/comedy Second Samuel, will run Thursday-Sunday, April 8-11 and April 15-18 at the Tellico Community Playhouse, 304 Lakeside Plaza, Loudon. Reserved seats at $21 are available on the website www.tellicocommunityplayhouse. org. Due to the pandemic, seating will be limited in the Playhouse and available seats will be identified in the online seating diagram. Masks will be required, and patrons’ temperatures will be taken as they enter. Last year the Players invested in a state-of-the-art ultraviolet air filtration system to help keep patrons safe. Hand sanitizer stations will be placed in high traffic public areas of the theater, and seating areas will be sanitized before and after each performance. Set in the late 1940s in a sleepy little town called Second Samuel, Georgia, (so-named because General Sherman burned down the first incarnation of the town), this Pulitzer-nominated play by Pamela Parker tells the story of what happens when a small town discovers the big secret of one of its most beloved and recently deceased citizens, Miss Gertrude. With an unforgettable narrator in the form of a mentally challenged, big-hearted young man called B Flat, we are introduced to an array of colorful yet compellingly familiar characters -- the small-town doctor who takes no nonsense, the ditzy and narrow-minded preacher’s wife, the nervous undertaker, the chatty hairdresser, the black man working in the local saloon. Len Willis is directing the show; Rosie Sylvester is producer. Says Willis: “It is significant that eight of the 11 cast members of Second Samuel are new to our stage, furthering our goal to bring new acting blood to the Players.” The cast: Cameron Cleveland as B-Flat – the main character– reminiscent of Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump. Marshall Stone as Frisky – the town’s unofficial leader. Malik Baines as US. Baily Dufty as Mansel – a harmless redneck. Vern Russell as Mr. Mozel – the town bigot. Ku Adams as Omaha Annette Dufty as Jimmy Deeanne. Lisa Dawn Maleske as Ruby. Jennie Lee-Pace as Marcela. John Swenson as Doc. Alex Dufty as June Cline. The men inhabit the Bait and Brew Bar, the women the “Change Your Life” Hair and Beauty Emporium, and B-Flat moves between the two and Miss Gertrude’s front porch. The revelation of Miss Gertrude’s secret forces the people of Second Samuel to re-evaluate their perceptions of the world, each other, and themselves. Along the way they must also contend with issues of racism, the treatment of the mentally challenged, religion, and fear of that which is different. The ending is both poignant and uplifting. Sponsor of the play is J & D. Estate Liquidators & Auctions. James Fisher, a principal of J & D, also is serving as stage manager for 2nd Samuel. He has directed several Players productions.

Prevent a Family Boat Dock Tragedy
A
recent article in BoatUS describes how two young friends, boys ages 10 and 11, drowned in Cherokee Lake. Sadly they died from Electric Shock Drowning or ESD. ESD occurs when low levels of A/C current enter the water from faulty electrical wiring on family docks and boats. This current incapacitates a swimmer, causing them to drown. It also poses a significant health risk to those attempting to rescue these individuals. The article went on to say that as many as 7 other swimmers were reportedly drowned from ESD nationally during this same summertime period and that there were probably at least as many near misses. It is also likely that other ESD drownings occurred but went unidentified as such. Electric Shock Drownings have been likened to entering a bathtub with an electric hair dryer in your hand. But in this case, the hair dryer is your boat or dock. The real tragedy of these stories is that these drownings needn’t have taken place.
The solution is a simple one costing only $799. That’s right. For the combined annual costs of detailing and winterizing your family’s boat, these deaths likely could have been prevented. Called ShockIQ, this state of the art device can be installed on your dock to detect stray A/C electrical current in the water near your dock. At the first sign of current in the water, ShockIQ swiftly and safely shuts down the A/C power to your dock while sounding an audible alarm. Tragedy averted. The ShockIQ is available from Lifetime Docks for only $799 and can easily be installed by the dock owner. To learn more, call Patrick Boring at 423-566-7401. Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading your home with a water filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health.
pring cleaning has arrived! Most of America is cleaning out closets, welcoming the warmer weather, and maybe even dabbling in some home renovation projects. While renovations are an important update to your home, we at Aqua Clear Water Systems believe that upgrading your home with a water filtration system is the #1 way to increase your home’s value and your family’s health. In the last year, we’ve spent more time in our homes than ever before, and the housing market has absolutely exploded. So, we’d like to give you 5 reasons why a Kinetico Water System is your next best home improvement investment. 1. Improved Water Quality, Taste & Odor - East Tennessee’s water is known for its hardness as well as chlorine, iron, sediment, and other harmful contaminants polluting the water. A whole house Kinetico water filtration system can remove all of these contaminants to give you tasteless, odorless, and silky feeling soft water throughout your home. 2. Improved Life of Appliances & Fixtures - A system will protect your home from damages caused by a variety of water contaminants! You could be extending the life of your water heater, washing machine, dishwasher, pipes, refrigerator, and more by installing a Kinetico water system because reducing the build-up in these appliances allows them to work efficiently. 3. Increased Value of Your Home - With the housing market booming, we’d love to help you get a bigger bang for your buck when selling. 4. Improved Health - Chlorine is a harmful chemical used to treat bacteria in water. While it’s necessary to kill bacteria,
chlorine can’t differentiate between good and bad bacteria. When you shower in chlorinated tap water, your skin absorbs the chlorine like a sponge, leaving you at risk. To name a few, high amounts of chlorine can cause breathing and lung problems and cancer from THM agents. Filtering your water could save you from unnecessary illnesses. 5. Improved Skin & Hair - A whole house filtration system reduces the amount of build-up on your applianc-
es as well as your skin and hair. Who wouldn’t want that? Softened water results in brighter skin, shinier hair, and longer-lasting clothes. Now that you know the benefits of installing a whole-home filtration system, we’d love the opportunity to help you improve your home in 2021 by doing an in-person or virtual free water health checkup. We’ll come to your house for FREE or connect via Zoom. It’s your choice! For East Tennessee’s Mountain Views readers
only, we’re offering an exclusive designer faucet in the color of your choice ($195 value) and $200 off when you purchase a system before April 30th, 2021.
