Hendersonville, North Carolina

N

Jump Off Rock

estled in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina, 2,200 feet above sea level, Hendersonville has long been a popular summer destination for those looking to escape the heat. The area has evolved into a four-season travel destination, with scenic marvels to attract visitors of all ages. Offering a variety of interests, including outdoor recreation, live entertainment, historic sites, theatre, shopping, and a wide array of restaurants, the area boasts a range of accommodations – from elegant bed and breakfasts to rustic cabins offering a variety of amenities – to satisfy every guest’s desires.

No longer just a vacation destination, Hendersonville – with its almost perfect climate, combined with excellent health services, variety of housing options, and numerous recreational, cultural, and educational opportunities – has earned national recognition as one of the best places to live and retire.

History A mountainous county with deep, rich agricultural roots, Henderson County has evolved from humble beginnings into a welcoming destination for all whose growth was shaped by its railroads and commerce. For nearly 10,000 years, Henderson County belonged to the Cherokee Nation. Following treaties with the Cherokee in the late 1700s, early Appalachian Mountain pioneers initiated the settlement of this land, and in the 1840s, the village of Hendersonville received its original charter. During this time, agriculture was the first source of revenue for Henderson County’s residents, including corn, wheat, rye, potatoes, and cabbage. It also quickly became a popular summer retreat for Charleston, SC, residents seeking a retreat from the Lowcountry heat. Present day visitors continue to flock to Hendersonville because of its four distinct, yet moderate, seasons, which offer beauty, variety, and

year-round enjoyment of the outdoors. For more than a century, historic Hendersonville has welcomed guests, creating a strong tourism-based industry. In addition to tourism, today’s economy is also based on manufacturing, agriculture, and retirement. To learn more about the history of Hendersonville, make sure to stop by the Henderson County Heritage Museum and Henderson County Genealogical & Historical Society during your visit.

Outdoor Adventures » Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the 10,473 acres of DuPont State Recreational Forest, which is home to four major waterfalls on the Little River, five lakes, and 82 miles of trails and roads. Popular blockbuster hits “The Hunger Games” and “The Last of the Mohicans” both shot scenes at Triple Falls and Bridal Veil, two of DuPont’s waterfalls. » Jump Off Rock is a scenic overlook that provides a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge and Pisgah ranges. Its namesake originates from a more than 300-year-old Cherokee Indian legend when a heartbroken Cherokee mother received word of her son’s passing in battle, prompting her to climb the edge of the rock and jump. Legend has it that some nights one can see her ghost on the legendary rock. » The North Mills River Recreational Area, a rustic mountain getaway, provides campgrounds with access to a variety of cultural and natural attractions, including an arboretum, the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway, and numerous hiking, fishing, and mountain biking opportunities. Its shaded campsites have access to restrooms with hot showers, picnic tables, tent pads, lantern posts, and campfire rings with grills for campers.

Sierra Nevada Brewery

» The Gorge Zip Line Canopy Adventure elevates visitors to tree top levels to enjoy the spectacular views of the mountain region. It includes three rappels, a sky bridge, and zip lines. » At Shoal Creek Horseback Trail Rides, trail rides are available year-round and last anywhere from one to four hours depending on the rider’s preference. » Holmes Educational State Forest offers a series of well-marked trails, accented by exhibits and displays depicting ecology of a managed forest. Picnic sites with tables and a spacious picnic shelter are also available. It’s located about eight-and-a-half miles from downtown Hendersonville and is open mid-March to late November.

Annual Events and Festivals » The Rhythm & Brews summer concert series features fun for the entire family. Held on the third Thursday of the month from May through September, the series features local and regional bands from every genre. » Every Monday night in June, Monday Night Live brings the beat and rhythms of a variety of music styles to the historic downtown streets of Hendersonville. » Music on Main has become a favorite summertime event for music lovers of all ages. The concerts are held every Friday evening from June through mid-August on the perfect stage at the corner of Main and Barnwell Streets. » Recognized as the oldest street dance event in the United States, Street Dances entertains spectators with clog dancing every Monday night from July to August. Began after WWI to welcome soldiers home. » The North Carolina Apple Festival, a four-day celebration honoring the NC apple during Labor Day weekend, features a street fair along Main Street including live music, arts & crafts, apple growers, children’s activities, and food. » Art on Main, an annual two-day festival that takes place in October each year, features the incredible talents of gifted local artists. » The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony kicks off the holiday season and features storytelling, entertainment, and a visit from Santa Claus. » Each December the Olde Fashioned Christmas gets visitors in the holiday spirit with carolers, entertainment, merchants’ open houses, and refreshments.

From the Publisher

une officially ushers in summer with hot, humid days and with promises of vacations and summertime fun in the sun and on the lake. East Tennessee has a variety of local events that you can enjoy without having to travel any great distance. There are also summer activities taking place not only downtown, but around the Greater Knoxville area, so check out this issue for details. Also, don’t forget your own backyard for summertime fun with friends and family. June is also set aside to honor dads and all they do for their families. Let your dad know just how much he is appreciated. It can be with a gift, a family fun day, or just a phone call to let him know he is loved. My dad holds a special place in my life, and though he is now gone, he is sorely missed. I think of him each time I see a father enjoying family time or an elderly man who is still active with his daily routine. Cherish the time you do have with your father and make his day, as well as every day, a special one. All of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views wish all dads a very Happy Father’s Day. Everyone enjoy the start of the summer season.

History Repeats Itself

A

New Signs for the Village Entrances

bout 17 years ago the TV Lions and Kiwanis Clubs came together in a joint project to place informational signs at the north and south entrances to the village alongside Tellico Parkway. The purpose was to provide visitors a directory of churches and service clubs in the village. Well, history has repeated itself with some additions to (From L to R) Kiwanis members Rick Bailey and President Beth Mouse, Lions Club President Ed Roeber, Project the number of clubs joining Assistant Randy Heiden, and the Lead Lion, Wayne DeLawter the project, as well as the number of churches in the village. The latter has risen to six from the original four churches as can be seen in the photo of the new sign. In addition to the Lions and Kiwanis Clubs, the Rotary and GFWC TV Women’s Clubs have also joined in the project to place updated club informational placards on the entry signs, as well as refurbish the entry signs themselves. Also added to the new sign are two additional organizations, the Coast Guard Auxiliary and WATeR, both concerned with environmental and safety issues. The Lions were the lead club on the project, led by their Lead Lion Project Manager, Lion Wayne DeLawter. Their effort involved enlisting the Tellico Woodworkers to refurbish the signs, as well as replace the latticework that serves as the backdrop upon which the club signs are attached. The Lions also enlisted and effected coordination with the other clubs to update the information on the individual club signs. The entire effort was ably supported by the Public Works Department that did part of the work in installing the lattice work, as well as the signs. The effort was completed on a beautiful day where representatives of the clubs assisted in mounting their club placards. In addition to Lions and Kiwanis Club members who did the bulk of the work, others involved in the project included Woodworkers President Don Schmid, who did the work on the header on the top of the sign, GFWC Women’s Club President Nancy Benn and the GFWC Project Lead, Barbara Miller, Rotary Club President Maggie Morrow, and CG Auxiliary Commander Mike Colacone. Several POA Public Works employees also assisted in mounting the latticework and the signs. This project is emblematic the continuing coordination between the service clubs in the village to maximize the impact they can have by joining together in project of this nature. Granted, they are serving themselves by posting information about their clubs, but, more importantly, their efforts have improved the appearance of the signs and go just a bit farther to making Tellico Village the outstanding place to live that it is.

n another beautiful Tellico Village spring day, 116 golfers, 29 foursomes, fanned out on the holes of the Toqua Golf Course to begin play in the 18th annual Lions Golf-for-Sight Outing. In addition to the golfers, success could be measured by the number of sponsor signs – 53 placed at various places near the clubhouse. These sponsors, who donated more than $13,000, constitute the real backbone of the financial success that the outing enjoys. Of the 53 sponsors, four were corporate sponsors donating $1,000 each; they were Prosperity Partners Wealth Management, Tennessee Orthopedic Clinics (Drs. Cates and Ivie), Santek Waste Services, and Edward Jones, Gary Stuart CFP. At the next donor level, Gold ($500 donations), there were four sponsors, including Lakeside Real Estate Group, Lawncare of East Tennessee, Provision Center for Proton Therapy, and Zimmerman Wealth Management. This financial support, as well as revenue from the players themselves in the form of fees, mulligan purchases, and rent-a-pro fees, add to the funds raised from this event and will enable the TV Lions to continue their vision-related service projects in Loudon County. These include a program of providing free eyeglasses to indigent citizen through Health Fairs at the Good Samaritan Center, as well as vision testing in all of the county schools. A separate program, using a digital eye examination camera, is used to detect vision problems in children from several months to six years of age. In addition to these

service projects, the TV Lions also make cash donations to a number of service organizations in Loudon County, as well as East Tennessee. After a great day of golf, the following emerged as the team winners: » Women’s team: Cindy Townery, Kim Flaig, Nancy Galloway, and Ann Wellinghoff » Men’s team: Ron McDaniel, Larry Branum, Randy Bray, and Dewane Roberts » Mixed team: Carolyn & Harold Cates and Stephen & Chelsea Brooks In addition to the team prizes, the following individuals earned accolades for their achievements as noted: » Closest to the Pin (men): John Fuchs – 5’ 0” » Closest to the Pin (women): Susan Layman – 9’ 1” » Longest Drive (men): Steve Smith » Longest Drive (women): Patti Patterson » Senior Longest Drive (men): Jim Moodispaugh » Senior Longest Drive (women): Carolyn Cates » Most Accurate Drive (men): Bruce Christopher » Most Accurate Drive (women): Susan Layman Again, the TV Lions would like to thank all the participants and sponsors for making this outing another rousing success. The TV Lions are always looking for new individuals to join their ranks and serve the community. director. “Maybe grand success or epic failure. That’s what’s exciting to me. The camp will culminate in a performance of Robin Hood. Not the Disney Fox version. Not men in tights. Not prince of thieves. The campers will perform an original script adapted from the book The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle. The music? No one knows yet except Pam Thigpen, our genius songwriter. I do know we’ll be inspired to create great theatre when we meet our students, who will take classes during camp in preparation becoming the storytellers of an original musical that has never been performed. Risky? You bet. But that’s a risk worth taking, in my opinion.” Registration forms are available at The Arts Center, and the deadline to register is June 29. Only 25 spots are

available in this intensive camp, and early registration is strongly recommended. Tuition for the two-week camp is $150 per camper. All supplies are furnished, and campers are asked to bring their own lunch. Camp staff includes Pam Thigpen, retired Athens City Schools music teacher, and professional actors Kelly Balch Borwick and Bob Borwick. Scholarships are available from the Marian Biddle Trew Scholarship Fund. Scholarship applications are available upon request at The Arts Center and must be submitted by June 22. For questions or more information about this or any AACA program, contact The Arts Center at 423-7458781, office@athensartscouncil.org, or in person at 320 North White Street in Athens.

The Turtle and the Hair

T

his winter’s ongoing rain, cold, and gloomy days have had us all screaming, “Are we there yet?” When the temperature drops and clothing layers increase, it makes a stylist’s job more difficult. In this episode, let’s talk about our arch nemesis – the turtleneck. Jane Doe walks into her salon on a brisk winter day to get her dark brown color touched up. When her stylist comes to greet her, she notices Jane is wearing a down vest, a funnel neck sweater, and a turtleneck – all in a

lovely off-white shade. The stylist offers a color robe for Jane to change into, but Jane declines saying she’s cold. If you have ever played a video game, this is the level where you are thrown into the bonus round to fight the “big arch nemesis.” Not only does the stylist have to try and avoid getting color on all those layers, but she has to do a short haircut on a neck she can’t see, let alone get to. Dressing appropriately for your appointment will allow your stylist the freedom to navigate your session without

going through an obstacle course. For a proper cut, the hair needs to be able to lay flat against the neck. When collars and turtlenecks are in the way, it can cause over direction, resulting in uneven cuts. When it comes to color, Christy Noe Ingram clothing that sticks up Artistic Director above the cape is suscepThe Village Salon tible to being ruined. If it is cold out, try wearing a collarless shirt and a coat The Village Salon 222 Village Square and scarf. It should be warm in Tellico Village enough in the salon to shed 865-458-9332 the outer layers. Throwing thevillagesalon@aol.com an old shirt in your bag to change into helps on color days when coming straight from work. A button up shirt works best if you are getting a style for an evening out or an event. This will keep locks from getting messed up when changing clothes. Don’t forget that most salons offer robes to change into so you don’t have to worry about your clothing at all! Wishing turtlenecks were banned from the earth is not a realistic dream, but maybe keeping them out of the salon is. Being mindful of how you dress on appointment days will allow your stylist the freedom to navigate your session rather than fight through it! Amanda’s pieces are rendered on the potter’s wheel or slab-built by hand with texture and alterations. All pieces are water tight, non-toxic, and oven proof.

Bruce Bunting: The Alphabet Series on the North Wall

The alphabet series was inspired by Bruce Bunting’s desire to program an exhibition and create a larger body of coherent work. He typically works on a small scale, on individual pieces, and he selected the alphabet as the basis for his new series. Bruce Bunting He scoured the dictionary for inspiring words and antique shops and his attic for parts and pieces. Each of the works incorporate his handmade paper, newly-purchased parts and antiques, and some personal objects more than 20 years old. This exhibition represents the largest body of work Brue has ever made.

Celebrating Dad

ather’s Day, which is celebrated on Sunday, June 17, this year, will be here before we know it. I would like to personally invite you to visit us at Gallery on Main for that forever gift that Dad will cherish and remember for many years to come. Located in historic downtown Sweetwater, Gallery on Main has a wide variety of gifts for you to discover that you just cannot find in the “big box” stores. Consider a fine hand-crafted writing instrument created by area artisans that can be used and enjoyed by your father every day and that becomes a legacy gift to be shared with future generations. Or maybe Dad would enjoy a hand-crafted, rustic end-table created from white oak with cedar branch legs to rest his remotes and favorite beverage in his “man cave.” We also feature prints of popular vintage car grills, reminiscent of Dad’s teenage years, which can be framed and beautifully displayed in his special area of your home. While you are visiting Gallery on Main, come early and be sure to enjoy a custom brewed coffee (hot, iced, or frozen) at our new “Cup Runneth Over” and “Sweet Shop,” which are also located in historic downtown Sweetwater. Or enjoy a lunch to remember at one of our wonderful downtown restaurants. Also, be sure to visit Main Street Marketplace, a special event hosted by the City of Sweetwater. Visit the city’s Facebook page for a list of dates, times, and vendors who will be participating each weekend. We look forward to seeing you soon! Recycle Your Old Vases with Random Acts of Flowers

A breath of fresh air for your home

R

andom Acts of Flowers recycles and repurposes flowers by engaging dedicated volunteer teams to deliver beautiful bouquets and moments of kindness to individuals in healthcare facilities. RAF actively solicits vase donations to support our mission. Donating your unused vases is an easy way to support our mission. Practically everyone has unused vases in their garage or tucked away in kitchen cabinets. What may be trash or clutter to you is actually one person served in the eyes of RAF!

Screens of East Tennessee 865.919.1615 steve@tennesseescreens.com

FAQs Do the vases have to be a certain type, size, color, etc.? While RAF will accept any vase if brought to our warehouse, we have determined the best size for our mission is under nine inches in height, with an opening of no more than four inches in diameter. Coffee cups and small baskets also work well within our mission. RAF volunteers love unusual vases of all shapes and colors! How can I get vases to you? RAF relies on volunteer support to carry out our mission. We encourage any group or company to drop off their vases at our warehouse, located at 3500 Workman Road, Suite 101B, in Knoxville. Do the vases need to be washed? We always appreciate receiving clean vases when possible. However, RAF can enlist volunteers to wash them. What is the best way to transport them? Cardboard boxes work very well. You may also wish to wrap them in newspaper or tissue for safer transport, although we have discovered most vases are very sturdy! Any additional information? Make an even bigger impact by dropping $1 in each vase. Or use a vase as a piggy bank and collect loose change in it for a few weeks leading up to your vase donation. We depend solely on private donations. Every dollar, every penny, helps us serve the ill and elderly in our community! Since Random Acts of Flowers was founded in 2008, more than 340,000 vases have been recycled nationwide. In Knoxville, RAF has recycled more than 102,000 vases. If you have questions or want to learn more about Random Acts of Flowers, call 865633-9082, email info@rafknoxville.org, or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org. Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness.

atthew Dixson, a senior at Christian Academy of Knoxville, was recognized on May 6 for his contributions to the FISH ministry at First Farragut UMC. Matthew developed a software program to help map routes for volunteers who deliver food to Knox County neighbors in need. A student at Christian Academy of Knoxville, Matthew approached the FISH Ministry Team at First Farragut in October 2016 about partnering on his CAK Senior Capstone Project. Every senior at Christian Academy is required to complete a CAPSTONE Project that builds on the student’s passion. Matthew’s passion is computer programming. He offered to help develop a software program to map routes for FISH drivers. During the next 18 months, Matthew worked with the FISH Team to design a software program to capture all the information drivers need to make deliveries and create a report specific to each driver. He tailored the report to

include special requests for non-food items and needs. He linked all that information to an export file so volunteers can send data to Second Harvest and other funding organizations. He created a map linked to GPS that showed the best route for each driver’s deliveries. First Farragut UMC is a member of the West Knox FISH Pantry, the only delivery pantry in Knox County. First Farragut partners with 17 churches in Knox County to stock this pantry and deliver groceries to families in need who have no transportation. The FISH ministry has been active almost 50 years in Knox County. Member churches take phone calls and deliver groceries once a month. In April 2018, using Matthew’s software, the First Farragut FISH Team delivered to 44 households. The team was able to provide each driver with a delivery report and a GPS map showing the most efficient delivery route. Matthew will be attending UT this fall in the computer science program.

ayton’s treatment strategies can make your yard an enjoyable place to relax and not worry about getting bitten, stung, or just plain annoyed! Mosquitoes: Truly enjoy your yard during these summer months without getting bitten by irritating, disease-carrying mosquitoes! Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program uses a treatment process that kills biting mosquitoes and prevents many mosquito eggs from becoming biting adults. Mosquito breeding sites lurk about everywhere, so Dayton’s thorough approach includes treating mosquito resting areas, landscaping, vegetation, trees, shrubs, and breeding sites like standing water, ponds, and waterscapes. This treatment will not harm your garden, pets, fish, frogs, etc. Carpenter Bees: These pests often return to the same area you saw them the previous year. Unseen to you, they have built chambers inside wood for laying eggs, some extending to as long as 10 feet! Dayton’s treats the source of carpenter bees. If you simply fill up the holes, they’ll just drill new holes a few inches away!

Ants: Ants tramping through your kitchen in long lines? The key to getting rid of ants is to treat where they’re coming from, which is often outside, usually underground, and sometimes hard to find. Wasps/Yellow Jackets: No one likes getting stung, so let Dayton’s take the risk to destroy the nests, NOT YOU! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather pests with an annual pest agreement. Other services include monthly/quarterly/ one-time pest control services, convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, pest control for ladybugs/bedbugs/ other pests, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation. Announcing the 2018-2019 Broadway at the Tennessee Theatre Lineup

T

he Tennessee Theatre is pleased to announce the 2018-2019 Broadway at the Tennessee Theatre season. The complete lineup is as follows: » Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I December 7-9, 2018 » Les Misérables January 2-6, 2019 » Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella February 1-3, 2019 » Something Rotten! March 1-3, 2019 » Jersey Boys May 3-5, 2019 » Finding Neverland June 14-16, 2019 Since 2008, the Tennessee Theatre has presented classic favorites and recent hits in its Broadway at the Tennessee series, entertaining more than a quarter-million enthusiastic Broadway patrons. The 2018-2019 season of Broadway, featuring six shows and a total of 34 performances from December 2018 to June 2019, includes something for everyone. “Part of the mission at the Tennessee Theatre is to offer diverse, high-quality entertainment, which includes bringing a wide variety of Broadway shows to Knoxville,” said Becky Hancock, Executive Director of the Tennessee Theatre. “Broadway brings together long-time theatre attendees and first-timers to this beautiful venue to experience a popular art form and create lasting memories in the Official State Theatre of Tennessee. As we celebrate the Tennessee Theatre’s 90th anniversary later this year, I hope that Broadway-lovers from all across East Tennessee and beyond will join us!” The season opens with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s The King and I. Two worlds collide in this “breathtaking and exquisite” musical based on the 2015 Tony Award®-winning Lincoln Center Theater production. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, The King and I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. Start the New Year off with Les Misérables. Cameron Mackintosh presents the new production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables, direct from its acclaimed Broadway return. Featuring the beloved songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” and many more, this epic

and uplifting story has become one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history. With its glorious new staging and dazzlingly re-imagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, this breathtaking new production has left both audiences and critics awestruck. Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella is the Tony Award®-winning Broadway musical from the creators of The King and I, The Sound of Music, and South Pacific that’s delighting audiences with its contemporary take on the classic tale. This lush production features an incredible orchestra, jaw-dropping transformations, and all the moments you love – the pumpkin, the glass slipper, the masked ball, and more – plus some surprising new twists! Be transported back to your childhood as you rediscover some of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s most beloved songs, including “In My Own Little Corner,” “Impossible/It’s Possible,” and “Ten Minutes Ago” in this hilarious and romantic Broadway experience for anyone who’s ever had a wish, a dream... or a really great pair of shoes. Something Rotten! is “Broadway’s big, fat hit!” (New York Post). Set in 1595, this hilarious smash tells the story of Nick and Nigel Bottom, two brothers who are desperate to write a hit play. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical! They were just four guys from Jersey, until they sang their very first note. They had a sound nobody had ever heard... and the radio just couldn’t get enough of. But while their harmonies were perfect on stage, off stage it was a very different story – a story that has made them an international sensation all over again. Go behind the music and inside the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons in the Tony Award®-winning true-life musical phenomenon, Jersey Boys. From the streets of New Jersey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this is the musical that’s just too good to be true. The season closes in June with Finding Neverland. The incredible story behind one of the world’s most beloved

characters, Peter Pan. Playwright J.M. Barrie struggles to find inspiration until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys’ enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland, where nothing is impossible – and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. Subscription packages for the season are on sale now. A new package offering Sunday matinee performances has been added this year. Cast Selected for Upcoming Tellico Players Comedy The Dixie Swim Club

T

he cast has been selected for the Tellico Community Players July production of The Dixie Swim Club, a hilarious and touching comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, and Jamie Wooten. It’s all about five unforgettable southern women whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team. They set aside a weekend each August to recharge their relationships at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. There, free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. The play focuses on four of those special weekends, spanning a period of 33 years.

The cast Jo Beliles will play Sheree Hollinger, the spunky team captain who desperately tries to maintain her organized and “perfect” life and continues to be the group leader. Judy Douglas appears as Dinah Grayson, a wisecracking

overachiever. She’s a career dynamo whose victories in the courtroom are in stark contrast to the frustrations of her personal life. Cindy Archer is Lexie Richards, a pampered and outspoken woman determined to hold on to her looks and youth as long as possible. She enjoys being married over and over again. Barbara Kistler-Martin will play Vernadette Simms, a self-deprecating acerbic woman acutely aware of the dark cloud that hovers over her life, who has decided to just give in and embrace the chaos. Geri Denny appears as Jeri Neal McFeeley. Sweet and eager to please, she experiences a late entry into motherhood that takes them all by surprise. James Fisher is directing, and the producer is Betty Ann Sterner. Play dates are Thursday through Saturday, July 12-14, and Thursday through Sunday, July 19-22, at the Tellico Community Playhouse, located at 304 Lakeside Plaza in Tellico Village. Tickets will go on sale online on Monday, June 11, at www.tellicocommunityplayhouse.org.

Jonathan Cain by

O

ne of the most recognizable – and most downloaded – songs of all time is Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’." Co-written by then-lead singer, Steve Perry, and keyboardist, Jonathan Cain, the song has become the anthem of generations and is considered a staple of the soundtrack of teens of the ’80s. Jonathan Cain took time out of his incredibly busy schedule to talk with me about his just-released autobiography, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” as well as what fans can expect at Journey’s stop with Def Leppard at ThompsonBoling Arena on June 6th. I spoke with him by phone at his Florida home just before he headed out to church with his wife of three years, Reverend Paula White. With more than seven years spent working on his book, I asked him how he felt about the finished product. “It’s been quite a journey, no pun intended. It really has been a journey. I learned a lot. I must’ve re-wrote this book 10 times. But really, getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame changed my whole focus. From the lens of that, it was easy to look back and see how to tell the story. I think that really needed to happen before the book could come together the way it came.” When asked what he hoped people would take away from the book when they finished it, he said: “I hope it gives them a sense of confidence. They get hope. You have to continue to walk, because you may have a good season and make a million dollars. That doesn’t mean anything. This seeking – you can always be better. I feel that there’s always a way to improve. I kept looking and searching for ways I could get better and be more effective.

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

“Eventually I learned how to tell my own story, which took a lot of work. Just because you can write a song doesn’t mean you’re cut out to be a writer. I learned where my voice was. I learned a lot about grammar. It was like going back to school again really. “But all that just goes to when I wanted to write songs, I focused in on that early on. I realized I wasn’t going to be a virtuoso. But I think in the end, it’s confidence, perseverance – it takes work to get somewhere. Just because you think you got somewhere doesn’t mean that’s the end result, as my father said. It’s just a stepping stone. That was his big line: ‘It’s only a stepping stone.’ I’d say, ‘Dad, how far do I have to go to prove it to you?’ and he’d say, ‘I’ll tell you when you get it.’ “When Journey came along, he looked at me and said, ‘That’s what I said. That’s what I meant. That’s what I mean.’ Pretty cool, Dad. That’s why I dedicate the book to him. “Also, I hope all the young fathers out there take note and pay attention to the gifts your child has the way my dad did and lift them up in those areas they’re excelling in and recognize it. Give them confidence that it’s possible.” Jonathan makes it crystal clear in the book that his dad was his biggest influencer and encourager. I asked him how he thought his dad would feel about the book. “It is a legacy of our family, of the generations that he was part of. He brought me to the fiddle with my grandfather, and it turns out that my great grandfather played the violin. My uncles played. So that legacy that he shared is well represented in the book. I’m only a part

of him, so I think he would be very happy with it.” Since we last spoke, Jonathan’s spiritual walk seems to be much more prominent and devout. I asked him what would he like fans to know about that walk. “I want people to know you are worth it. I want fans to know this isn’t about religion. God isn’t about religion. It’s about the light and the hope and the love. He’s not an angry God. He’s not a judging God. He’s a good God. You can always return. So my point is that it’s never too late to return. He’s always there for you. He’s been there in the background. I tell people it’s like He pays for the suite that you’re in; He makes sure you have room service; He makes sure your room’s clean; and you just thank Him. He pays all the bills.” Knoxville will be showing Jonathan and the band that it won’t stop believin’ in the band on June 6th. “Don’t Stop Believin’” is available online and at your favorite place to buy books. You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

His songs have been recorded by such artists as Ray Charles, Faith Hill, and even the Muppets! He and his band will be playing oldies and goodies such as “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” as well as medleys from such bands as The Monkees, The Who, and The Doors. The ticket sales from this benefit concert will directly support the Heritage Center’s mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting the unique history and rich culture of this region. Space-Saving Murphy Beds

M

Awake to the Possibilities

urphy Beds have long been a solution for condos and other homes where floor space is a premium. Today many homeowners of larger homes are also opting for a Murphy Bed to make a room multi-functional. William L. Murphy invented the Murphy Bed in the early 1900s. He wanted to hide the bed in his cramped one-room apartment so he could have more space to entertain. He experimented with a folding bed, eventually receiving a patent. These beds have been helping homeowners save space for more than 100 years! Tailored Living of Knoxville, the area’s whole-home organization experts, designs and installs Murphy Beds

to meet each individual customer’s needs and style. Investing in a Murphy Bed can: » Create More Space – Most families live in all their space, so a dedicated guest room is not always practical. If you’re short on space but need an extra bed, a Murphy Bed is the perfect solution. It provides flex-space for any home. You can use the room as a bedroom at night and a playroom, home office, or living room at other times. You won’t lose any space, and guests will have a very comfortable place to sleep. » Increase Home Value – If you decide to rent or sale your home, maximizing space is an important feature for people. A Murphy Bed allows you the ability to maximize a home’s space, and it will also increase the value of the house. » Be Designed for Any Space – Designs depend on your needs and budget. Tailored Living design experts thoughtfully design each bed to seamlessly integrate into your space, proving you don’t have to compromise style when space is limited. A Murphy Bed can be elaborate or basic. Many designs include desks on one side so the room can also be a home office by day. Or the bed can be bordered by a bookcase, side cabinets, or pull-out drawers to give you extra storage. Most of all, it takes up very little space when closed, approximately 16” deep. Murphy Beds come in twin, full, queen, or king sizes to accommodate any space constraints. » Fit Any Décor – From a dark wood-grain to a solid gray finish, choose the look you want that fits your style. Also, there are also custom LED light options to ensure there is enough lighting when the bed is in use. If you want the flex-space a Murphy Bed provides, give Tailored Living of Knoxville a call for a free consultation using their 3D design software. Your Biggest Financial Threat in Retirement W

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

hile most retirees worry about stock market downturns, an even bigger financial threat is an unexpected health event that Medicare doesn’t cover. The average cost of home health care and assisted living is more than $40,000/ year and a full-skilled care facility is more than $70,000/ year. This retirement planning decision is truly a family one – if you don’t make plans to cover these costs, the burden falls to your adult children, who are trying to save for their own retirement and their kids’ education. That is not a scenario anyone wishes for their children! Several options exist to pay for home health and long-term care costs: 1. Self-insure and rely on family members Pros: If you never need long-term care, you haven’t spent money on unnecessary

premiums. Cons: A couple’s funds can be depleted providing care for the first spouse, leaving the second spouse with few options. Additionally, the psychological and physical toll on the caregiving spouse is significant. 2. Let my money run out and rely on the government Pros: Minimal cost. Cons: Medicaid requires you to be impoverished and gives you little control over the facility in which you will live. It does not cover home health or assisted living. 3. Use traditional long-term care insurance Pros: Annual premiums provide insurance benefits for a variety of home health, assisted living, and skilled facilities. Cons: Premiums do increase over time, and it has the “use it or lose it” stigma of paying for something you may never use. 4. Asset-based long-term care insurance Pros: This is, by far, my favorite option. It allows you to reposition a portion of your savings into a type of life policy that provides a multiplied amount of your investment, taxfree, if you need long-term care. And there is no “use it or lose it” – your investment

simply turns into an inheritance for your heirs, or you can even cancel the policy and request your money back. Cons: Need to have the necessary investment minimum of $35,000 already saved, though a 10-year payment plan is available. There is even insurance available for people who already need long-term care and are afraid they will run out of money. As a financial planner, my job is to protect my clients’ financial lives. Get started today – call my office to schedule a complimentary conversation. Your family will thank you. Gibbon Trails and Langur Landing Voted One of 10 Best Animal Exhibits in U.S.

oo Knoxville’s Gibbon Trails and Langur Landing have been voted one of the top 10 animal exhibits in the country by USA TODAY 10Best Reader’s Choice travel awards. Gibbon Trails and Langur Landing, a $6 million multiacre habitat for white-handed gibbons and silvered leaf langurs, officially opened on March 2. Part of the Boyd Family Asian Trek, Gibbon Trails and Langur Landing immerses zoo guests in a 360 degree aerial experience in a rainforest tree canopy. The habitats are designed with multiple viewing levels that allow the primates to pass directly over the heads of visitors or be eye-to-eye with them in a 60-foot-tall treehouse accessible by a suspension bridge. The new expansion also allows soaring views of Tiger Forest and incorporates a new outdoor training demonstration area for Malayan tigers. Gibbon Trails is home to one of the zoo’s most beloved ambassadors, Georgie. Langur Landing is home to Walter, Teagan, Melody, and Opie, a family of silvered

leaf langurs that are a new species to Zoo Knoxville. “It was an honor to be nominated, and we are thrilled our public considers these habitats among the most dynamic in the country for both animals and guests,” said Lisa New, President and CEO. “We have been focused on evolving from a great zoo for a ‘city of our size’ to being recognized as a great zoo, period. We are thankful our

community supports that vision.” The complete list of winning zoo exhibits can be found at www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-zooexhibit-2018. Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville. Zoo Knoxville features exhibits of wild animals in natural habitats and is world renowned for its efforts in conservation and species survival. Zoo Knoxville is nationally accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is committed to the highest standards in animal care and well-being, ethics, conservation, and education. Knoxville’s largest attraction, the zoo is open every day except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The zoo is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission and ticket sales stop one-hour before the zoo closes. For more information, visit www.zooknoxville.org.

The 3 “M”s in Real Estate: Marketing, Marketing, Marketing

I

By Jesse C. Boling, REALTOR®

n the real estate marketplace, you will often hear the phrase “location, location, location,” which emphasizes the significant role that location represents in the resale of your existing home. While important, your home’s location is just one of the many components that must be considered when developing a winning marketing strategy. Well-thought out marketing strategies greatly enhance your potential for success and replace what often has passed for marketing in the past, namely a for sale sign in the front yard. A well-thought out marketing strategy that is carefully implemented can often result in selling your home faster and for the highest price possible when compared to the for sale sign method.

I typically have a sit-down strategy session with the sellers where we discuss their expectations, the unique features and characteristics of their home, market valuations, schools, shopping, essential city services, etc. Based on this information, we carefully develop a strategy to target a variety of communication and advertising platforms designed to reach prospective buyers. In preparation for marketing your home, we recommend enhancements to its interior and exterior, take professional photos, including overhead drone photography, prepare sales sheets for each home, and then custom design signage for your home. Your home is unique, and your marketing strategy should be as unique as your home. That is why I am en-

gaged every step of the way. From staging and photography to custom sign design, market strategy development, and negotiations, I will do everything in my power to sell your home in as little time as possible, and at the highest possible price. There are no guarantees in life, but by taking a professional approach to marketing your home from the start, your potential for success is greatly enhanced. Jesse C. An open-air market located in historic downtown Sweetwater

T

he Main Street Marketplace opened on March 17th and is funded by the City of Sweetwater in an effort to continue their historic downtown revitalization efforts. Combining Sweetwater’s rich history of both agriculture and textiles, the Main Street Marketplace hosts a variety of area entrepreneurs providing fresh produce, nursery and plant vendors, as well as artisan crafters. Also, several retail pop-up shops provide everything from home décor to boutique clothing and

handbags. Of course Main Street Marketplace wouldn’t be complete without our popular food vendors featuring homemade ice cream, cakes and treats, shaved ice, BBQ, brick oven pizza made on-site, and hot dogs. Even Knoxville’s favorite Ham N Goody’s has booked a monthly date. It looks as if all of our combined community efforts are paying off, as 2018 is shaping up to be a banner year for retail businesses and restaurants in Sweetwater. Not only did a new Rural King store re-

cently open on Main Street, but Sweetwater will be welcoming a new Huddle House in early June. Last month we featured an article in Everything Knoxville on the new businesses that opened in our historic downtown through the State of Tennessee’s Main Street Entrepreneurs Grant, including the Cup Runneth Over Coffeehouse, Sweet Station Bakery, Vittorino’s Italian Cucina

June in the Garden I

8B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2018

t seems that summer arrived a little early this year. This transition from cold to hot has caused some problems, so there are several things that you will need to do this month: 1. Do frequent walk-arounds. Plants are stressed and therefore more vulnerable to disease and insects. If you catch problems when they are just beginning, you have a better chance of getting them under control. Keep in mind, however, that you do not need to spray every single thing that crawls on your plants! Make sure that it is doing damage before you spray it. An example is a lady who wanted to kill the ladybugs on her tomato until I explained that one ladybug can clean all the aphids off a tomato plant in a single day! 2. You can prune the winter damage from shrubs now if you haven’t already done so. You can also cut back spent bulbs, stalks of spring bloomers (iris, peonies, etc.), and annuals that are getting leggy. If you want to reduce the size of your spring blooming trees and shrubs, prune soon after they stop blooming so that they have not set bud yet. 3. Maintain your container plants. Most will need to be deadheaded, cut back, cleaned up (don’t let the spent blooms settle down into the container), and fertilized weekly. 4. How are your vegetables? You should be able to start harvesting soon if you haven’t already done so. Be vigilant in watching for trouble in the form of insects and disease and treat before it gets out of hand. Splashing water is a quick way to spread disease, so always use soaker hoses or water at the base of the plant. Mulch will help. Call us if you have problems. 5. Resist the urge to overfertilize stressed plants. Organic fertilizers are ok, and compost is ok, but throwing a strong chemical on a stressed plant is like giving a Red Bull to someone who just ran a marathon. It might cause them to croak! Now that those suggestions are out of the way, let’s talk about perennials, because June is perennial month! I love perennials and use them in all my flower beds. There are some things that you need to keep in mind, however, if you are going to make a transition from annuals. First and foremost, many perennials do not have a long bloom time. Four to six weeks is average. This means that if you want consistent blooms, you will need

to plant sequential bloomers. Start out your spring with creeping phlox, candy tuft, irises, peonies, brunnera, and baptisia. Add summer bloomers such as daisies, lilies, phlox, purple coneflower, yarrow, bee balm, rudbeckia, and salvia. If your yard is shady, hostas, coral bells, and ferns will give you blooms and wonderful foliage color combinations. As we move into the fall, asters, mums, sedums, and some of the sages will continue the bloom show. Winter has hellebores to bloom in the gloom. or most of us, the old-fashioned mop is the cleaning tool of choice for tile and grout flooring. When tile is new, the mop often does the trick. Over time, however, the appearance of your tile and grout will begin to have problems. Traffic patterns begin to emerge, while other areas lose their shine and luster. Because grout is porous, it absorbs most of the dirt and debris it meets. Mopping only removes surface dirt while ignoring the dirt locked below the top layer. The more you mop, the more soil gets trapped INSIDE your floor. That’s where we can help you, the homeowner. From soil removal to dealing with mold and mildew spores associated with high humidity areas, Surface Doc can solve your most frustrating tile and grout issues. Our truck-mounted system allows us to tackle your floors with a three-step process. To extract soil beneath the surface, extreme heat must be used. Our special tools combine 240º of heat with high pressure to completely eradicate all the dirt inside your floors. Then it’s whisked away with powerful suction, leaving no mess behind. We deep-clean most hard surfaces, including ceramic, porcelain, travertine, limestone, concrete, and brick pavers. Once you’ve had an area deep-cleaned to your satisfaction, you will likely want to protect your surfaces with our high-quality sealer. We strongly recommend sealing hard surfaces to prevent future damage and to make home cleanings a snap. Our patented sealer will protect your floors from staining, effervescence, fading, traffic

patterns, and sunlight. Once your floor has been properly sealed with our professional sealer, you can literally clean your entire floor with hot water and a damp microfiber pad. Gone are the days of scrubbing and bleaching. Say hello to a beautiful home that is easy to maintain. Please give Surface Doc a call to schedule a free cleaning demonstration so you can see the difference a REAL deep-down-clean clean can make in your home. Surface Doc guarantees all their work, so you can be confident every job is done to the owner’s specifications and delight. In addition to hard surfaces, Surface Doc also specializes in carpet, as well as soft wash power cleaning for your home’s exterior. Owner John Fitzwilliam may be reached at 865-567-1986. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ Submitted by Alice Kimbrell, horticulturist with the UT Gardens, Knoxville

oming from the Greek word for hedgehog due to its spiny, unique center, Echinacea, or coneflower, has always been one of my favorite perennials. The plant’s overabundance of summer-blooming flowers attracts a multitude of beneficial pollinators to the garden, plus the cultivars bloom in a rainbow of colors. One of the AAS Trial Winners for 2013, Echinacea x hybrida ‘Cheyenne Spirit,’ is stealing the show in the coneflower department. An herbaceous perennial, this cultivar requires minimal care – no deadheading, staking, or excessive watering, not to mention the plant is deer resistant. Also, it comes in nearly every color you can think of, including white, yellow, orange, red, and purple – sometimes all on one plant! Like other coneflowers, ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ requires full sun for the best and biggest prolific blooms. It is drought tolerant, especially after the first year, and it grows well in a variety of soils. It is also resistant to rain and wind damage, refusing to topple over in most storms in contrast to traditional Echinacea. ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ plants are somewhat bushy and upright and with blooms, measure about 32 inches tall. This plant will happily grow in zones 4-9. ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is perfect for pollinator or cottage-style gardens when planted in a perennial bed or used in mass plantings in a landscape border. All Echinacea species are native to North America, so this plant is also a suitable choice for a native garden. Blooming the first year, the 3-inch to 4-inch flower heads are sure to attract a variety of butterflies and other pollinators. Plus, if you leave the old flower heads on the plant into fall and winter, birds, especially goldfinches, will enjoy eating the seeds. You can find ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ growing all across the state, and specimens are on display in all three of UT Gardens locations: Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Echinacea ‘Cheyenne Spirit’ is also widely available at local nurseries. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Ijams Nature Center and Central Cinema Present 2018 Movies Under the Stars

“I

n 2004, my husband and I toured Tellico Village and as a result, purchased a plot in the Coyatee Cove area. Since this time, my husband passed away, but my desire to build our dream home was strong. After much research and a few interviews with builders, I selected Kit Keener of Keener Homes. To begin the process, Kit referred me to a local designer. After several months of tweaking the design, we finally connected with the perfect plan; Kit patiently worked with me in regards to my budget requirements. Living in Indiana, and being single, the thought of not being present during the build was overwhelming. Kit introduced me to his project manager, and both of them reassured me that I was in good hands. We broke ground the beginning of October 2016. Pictures of the ground clearing and the foundation build were being sent to me on a weekly basis. Emails were often sent updating me on the progress of the build. In November 2016, I made a trip to Tennessee for the electrical walk-through. At that time, the walls were up, so I was able to visualize the home for the first time in person and felt more at ease. As months went by, pictures, emails, and phone conversations often kept me updated. Of course those who have built a home know that nothing goes as smoothly as you would like; however, Kit and his team were always there making me feel as if there weren’t any problems at all. Of course I can’t forget Krisha Loud, Office Manager. She was instrumental in so many ways and helped me watch the bottom line. I can’t thank Kit and his team enough for making the entire building process very comfortable for me. I definitely have new Tennessee friends.” – JoEllyn Brockmeyer

acaroni is a very dignified black and white domestic longhair female. She is seven years young and loves attention; the makings of a perfect lap cat! She will ask you to brush her daily to prevent painful mats in her lovely coat. MacGregor is a very handsome three year old orange tabby male who is FIV positive and needs to be an indoor ONLY cat. He may come across a bit gruff at first but quickly becomes very affectionate and loves attention. He will do best as the only cat (or with another FIV positive cat). FIVpositive cats live normal lives and just need an immunity boosting supplement and check-ups twice per year at the vet. They need a healthy diet (not raw due to immunity issues). Bing, a black domestic shorthair male, is just a teenager at about one year old and

is looking to form a long-term bond with a loving owner. Of course cats don’t have owners, they have “staff,” but you can ignore that and think of her as your sleek and shiny house panther. She has lots of energy and is very friendly and playful. She’ll reach out of her condo to get your attention. All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. There is a $40 adoption fee if over two years old, $50 under 2. Please remember their true purrrsonality may not show in the shelter environment. They may be uncomfortable or scared, so take time to pet them while they are still in their condo and let them get used to you before you pick him/her up. We have kittens that need foster homes.

As a foster home, you help kittens that need to be bottle fed, older weaned kittens that just need to grow and gain enough weight so they can be spayed/neutered a adopted, or unsocialized cats or kittens that have had minimal human contact. They just need some TLC so they can be adopted. And one of the best reasons for being a cat/kitten foster is that even if it’s pouring rain, you don’t have to walk them. Please call the shelter for additional information.

Meet Hazel

The Dog of the Month from the Monroe County Animal Shelter is Hazel. She is a 2+ year old Basenji mix. Basenjis are known for their “barkless” feature, where they make more of a yodel sound than a bark. They have short hair and are known for being clever and endearing. Hazel is a gentle, calm dog who recently sat for a long period of time in one of our volunteer’s laps, soaking up the love and affection. Hazel would need a fenced-in yard and would do well in a family with respectful children. When you adopt a pet (or for those of you who already have a pet), you might be tempted to feed it people food. Be aware that the following foods can make

your cat or dog ill: Chocolate, grapes, onions, and salty foods like chips. Also, certain household products can be harmful: Vaseline, breath fresheners, bar soap, and fabric softener sheets. If you suspect your pet has been made ill because of these substances, contact Animal Poison Control Center at 888426-4435. Our shelter is full! If you can’t adopt a pet, please consider fostering a dog, cat, or kitten. Fostering is a wonder way to help socialize pets to get them ready for adoption while you get a great dose of unconditional love. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday 114:30 and Saturdays 11-2. For more information, contact the shelter at 423-442-1015. Check out all available pets on our website at www. monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org Do you need to update your spring wardrobe? Come by the Monroe County Friends of Animals thrift store at 884 Englewood Street in Madisonville. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. Open Wednesday through Saturday 10-4.

Garage Renovation: Starting from the Floor Up

June, 2018, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 11B

M

ost of us grew up with a totally utilitarian garage with a coated floor – coated with oil and dirt. But today’s garages have become an extension of a home’s living space, and that means creating a clean space with flooring that’s durable and easy to clean. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” said Brain Falls, Flooring Division Manager for PremierGarage. “Polyurea is a hard coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option, and floors are designed to last.” The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Any clean-up requires only a hose or mop. Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. The garage will be as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the home. Premier Garage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Having a PremierGarage floor installed will also: » Increase the resale value of your home » Improve safety with a floor that is slip-, impact-, and heat-resistant and brighten the area with increased light reflectivity » Open up new activities in your garage – it could double as a children’s play area or hobby nook Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor.
