Why is Destin so lucky?
Yes, the sand in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and Okaloosa Island really is sugar white and powder soft. It’s as brilliant as our photos depict – no Photoshop required! This is because the sand contains finely ground quartz crystal. At the end of the last Ice Age, the world’s temperatures began warming, icecaps began melting, and large volumes of water were carried by rivers to the world’s oceans. The rising Apalachicola River, originating in the Appalachian Mountains, carried quartz particles down into the Gulf of Mexico and deposited them along our coast. Over time, the sea level rose and the quartz sand formed the shoreline. This beautiful white sand remains cool even in the heat of summer and gives the water its trademark emerald color by reflecting sunlight back up through the surf.
The underwater 100-fathom curve, where our relatively shallow waters drop to dramatic depths, is a miracle of nature. This curve draws closer in to Destin than to any other spot in Florida, creating the speediest deep-water access on the Gulf and therefore, the speediest access to fantastic deep-sea fishing. As a result, the Destin Harbor boasts the largest and most elaborately equipped fleet in the state with more than 200 charter boats. Popular and delicious catches in the area include various species of tuna, grouper, and snapper. Blue marlin, cobia, and pompano are also easy catches throughout our waters. The Emerald Coast also yields more billfish each year than all other Gulf ports combined. In addition to great fishing, the Emerald Coast also offers breathtaking diving. Various reef clusters reveal four-foot basket sponges and purple sea whips, as well as vibrant yellow angelfish, six-foot manta rays, and protected 350-pound sea turtles.

20th Annual Spring Art Show
M
embers of the Art Guild of Tellico Village (AGTV) will exhibit a new art collection May 11-13 at the Tellico Village Community Church, located at 130 Chota Center in Loudon. All artists, aspiring artists, and art enthusiasts are invited to attend. Visitors will be treated to a wide variety of new original works, celebrating the artistic diversity of both emerging and established guild members. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional artwork will be on display – from painting, drawing, and photography to sculpture, jewelry, pottery, and fabric art. Carl Gombert, PhD, a professor of art at Maryville College, will be juror for the show. Dr. Gombert, who has exhibited his own artwork at more than 200 shows throughout the country, will select artist awards in a number of categories. In addition, all attendees are invited to vote for their three favorite pieces of artwork, and the “People’s Choice” awards will be presented on Sunday afternoon. The public is invited to the opening reception on Friday, May 11, from 5 to 8 pm. Refreshments and live music enhance the evening while guests have the opportunity to interact with the artists. The exhibit continues on Saturday, May 12, from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday, May 13, from 8 am to 2 pm. There is no charge for the public to attend the opening reception or the exhibition.
About the Art Guild of Tellico Village Guild members, guests, and individuals interested in joining the Art Guild are welcome to meetings, classes, and workshops. The Art Guild of Tellico Village is a 501(c)(3) association, which is organized to support and encourage creativity in and appreciation and patronage of the visual arts through educational activities such as lectures, tours, workshops, classes, and exhibits. The Art Guild’s premier event each year is the annual Art Show held in early May at the Tellico Village Community Church Life Center. Art Guild members have the opportunity to exhibit and arrange for the sale of their artwork. he second Sunday in May is traditionally set aside to celebrate mothers, past and present. Women who fill the role of mom deserve to be honored for all their contributions and sacrifices that they show daily for their families. Moms are role models for their children and their loving, caring demeanor will greatly impact their children’s upbringing. Those children will in turn go on to impact the lives of all they come in contact with daily. So moms should not take their role lightly. We, as sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, should make sure we take the time to honor the person in our lives who fills the role of mom not only on Mother’s Day but every day. It’s as simple as taking time out of a busy schedule to touch mom with a phone call or an unscheduled visit with a hug and an “I love you.” These are all gentle reminders to mom of how much she is appreciated. My own mother has been gone now for a number of years, and I miss her very much. I miss talking with her, visiting her and helping her to make those special holiday dinners. But every Mother’s Day, I reflect on my mom and all the wonderful memories I have of my days growing up. I even take out the old photo albums and relive the family moments captured on film that are so precious and all that I have left of mom. This Mother’s Day make sure you honor your mom. Your time with her on this earth is not unlimited so make the most of it. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views wish all moms a very Happy Mother’s Day.

Hiwassee College Dental Hygiene Program Awarded Funds

anda Colbert (right) Director of the Dental Hygiene Lab at Hiwassee College, received a check from Maggie Morrow (left), who is President of the Rotary Club of Tellico Lake. The money will be used for scholarship. It takes two years for a dental hygiene student to complete the dental hygiene program at a cost of $50,000. In addition to the training facility at Hiwassee College, Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Tennessee provided a grant that allowed the school to acquire a Mobil Dental Lab. It regularly visits schools and nursing homes and is used when there is an emergency in our area. The students provide dental hygiene advice and do teeth cleaning… all at no cost. The Rotary Club of Tellico Lake meets every Thursday at noon at the First Baptist Church in Tellico Village. The public is invited to attend all meetings.
Maloney Joins Rotary Club of Tellico Lake
M
ike Maloney, who lives in Tellico Village, recently joined the Rotary Club of Tellico Lake. He first joined Rotary in 1981, and through several business moves, has been a continuous member in six different clubs. Initially from Northern Illinois, Mike has been involved in education during his work years, first as a high school teacher and then as Superintendent of Schools for 33 years. He has a commercial pilot license, owns two airplanes, and ran a company that produced airshows on the lakefront in Milwaukee which entertained approximately 500,000 people. He’s also a Certified Flight Instructor. He flew competitive aerobatics Mike Maloney (left) was sponsored for membership in the Rotary Club of Tellico and taught licensed pilots how to loop, roll, Lake by John Everson (center). The induction ceremony was conducted by spin, and recover from unusual altitudes. Kathy Dickson, a former President of the Club. Mike and his wife, Linda, have been married for 48 years. They have two children and four grandchildren. Their son flies for UPS, and their daughter finished her Doctorate last December and is employed as Assistant Superintendent in charge of Special Education in a suburban Chicago school district. The Rotary Club of Tellico Lake meets every Thursday at noon at the First Baptist Church in Tellico Village. The public is invited to attend all meetings.

wenty years ago our salon’s founder, Faye Whitehead, had the brilliance to bring a physician into the salon to perform non-surgical procedures for our guests. Since that time, the injectable cosmetic industry has skyrocketed into enormous popularity with the over 40 crowd. While the growth of this market has made injectables routine, there are still many who are petrified of having something injected into their face. This month’s column will describe the actual applications from my own experiences and maybe even dispel a couple of myths associated with the procedures. First, there are two primary types of treatment for the lines and wrinkles of the face. While there are a variety of uses for BOTOX®, it is most commonly used on the lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. Fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® are used on the larger lines formed near the nose and mouth and in some cases as a mid-face filler. The BOTOX® applications are the most common and in my own personal experience the easiest to receive as a patient. The most common myth is that this procedure “freezes” the muscles and will not allow movement, while in fact, they actually relax the muscles of the face. Several injections are made into the muscles just beneath the skin, and they are completely pain free. The only part of the application that is even the least bit uncomfortable is the piercing sound made by the needle at the injection site. Swelling and bruising are not a factor in my experiences, and just a couple of ice cubes after your treatment for a few minutes will have you leaving the salon with no visible side effects. The final result is not immediate and may take up to two weeks to achieve the desired effects. The lifespan of this product varies from person to person and depends largely on the elasticity of the skin. In my own experiences, the actual effects of the product last between
three and five months. However, the muscle atrophy that occurs during that time can keep the wrinkles at bay for an additional six to eight weeks after the product has worn off, which increases the total lifespan. Brian K. Also, for some reason, drinking a little extra water in the 24 hours following the injection seems to help. The lifespan for the fillers also varies from person to person, but for me, they seem to last between 15 and 18 months. Hopefully you may find some of this information helpful if you find yourself searching for some non-surgical cosmetic help. Museum of East Tennessee History Wins Multiple Awards at 2018 Tennessee Association of Museums Conference

he Museum of East Tennessee History was recently awarded three Awards of Excellence and an Award of Commendation by the Tennessee Association of Museums (TAM) for exhibits, programs, audio visuals, and staff. The awards were presented at the Tennessee Association of Museums Conference held in Selmer, Tennessee, on March 21. An Award of Excellence was presented for best temporary exhibit for Rock of Ages: East Tennessee’s Marble Industry, as well as An Award of Commendation for best Audio Visual Exhibit Component for the introduction video produced in partnership with East Tennessee PBS. The Rock of Ages exhibit was developed in partnership with MTSU Center for Historic Preservation and the Knox County Public Library and was on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History November 2016 through July 2017. region’s rich marble history, the importance of the stone to the local jobs and economy, and highlighted buildings, sculptures, and furniture made from the unique stone. The exhibit also facilitated a variety of well received public programs and partnerships with Candora Marble Company, Knoxville Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Pink Marble Trail, to name a few. ETHS’s new children’s event, “Monsters at the Museum,” was the recipient of an Award of Excellence in the Special Event category. Nearly 400 people partook in the free Halloween event in its first year. Attendees participated in a variety of fun Halloween-themed crafts, games, and activities, with storytelling that focused on regional folklore and superstitions, such as the wampus cat, while artifacts demonstrating eerie Victorian mourning traditions were on display. The event also featured museum scavenger hunts, costume contests, and trick or treating. The Second Annual Monsters at the Museum event is scheduled for October 27. Hannah Rexrode, ETHS education and volunteer coordinator, was recognized as the East Tennessee Emerging Museum Professional. Hannah joined the ETHS staff in December 2016 and has since brought enthusiasm and new ideas to the historical society’s team. Hanna’s experience in children’s programming and interpretation at Belle Mead Plantation and Historic Travellers Rest in Nashville have improved ETHS’s school tours, outreach, and docent programs. Mrs. Rexrode has also been instrumental in developing new family programming, including the Monsters at the Museum event and a WWI Family Day coming up on June 9. The purpose of the TAM Awards of Excellence is to recognize, encourage, and promote excellence within the activities of the Tennessee museum community.

Sweetwater Main Street Opens New Doors!

he year 2018 is looking to be a banner year in historic downtown Sweetwater. In the past few months, Sweetwater’s nationally accredited Main Street district has helped four new businesses open. Building entrepreneurs is an important goal for the Sweetwater Main Street organization. In partnership with the City of Sweetwater and funded in part with a grant through the State of TN Economic and Community Development, a formerly vacant building in downtown Sweetwater is being transformed into a business incubator. The beautiful historic building, once known as the Carter Brick Mason Building, is owned by Sweetwater Architect Sam Moser. His vision for the building has created space for a restaurant, coffee shop and bakery, a retail store, and several residential apartments in the future, as well as the relocation of his own architectural office. Last fall the first business, Her Majesty Boutique, opened to much fanfare. It hasn’t been unusual to see a line out the door of this trendy second floor boutique. Clothing and apparel, jewelry, accessories, and more, as well as a new children’s line, Reign Couture, have drawn many new shoppers to downtown Sweetwater. The shop is owned by Ashley Ingram, Miss Tennessee United States 2017. “It’s a very good thing to have young, smart

entrepreneurs in Sweetwater,” said Mayor Doyle Lowe. “We’re so glad to play a part in these businesses success.” In January, Vittorino’s Italian Cucina Restaurant opened and has stayed busy even through the traditionally slow months of January and February. The cuisine is fresh and made with love by owner Rosa. The venue is beautiful and cozy. Open Tuesday through Sunday, a meal in Vittorino’s Italian Cucina Restaurant is well worth the trip to Sweetwater. March 1st welcomed the Cup Runneth Over Coffeehouse and Sweet Station Bake Shop. The Coffehouse serves Crimson Cup coffee, as well as a variety of hot teas, espressos, cappuccinos, and more. Paired with a treat or breakfast item from the Bake Shop, and this stop is a must when visiting Sweetwater. The eclectic interior spotlights the original brick walls and locally made countertops, tables, and chairs. A space was created for live entertainment, and the back section of the building
has a meeting room available for parties and gatherings. Several years ago the Sweetwater Main Street organization hired a consultant for a master plan as part of a grant through the East TN Foundation. The process of creating the master plan identified several goals for downtown Sweetwater. Some of those goals included a restaurant serving pizza that more locals would support, businesses that stayed open past 5 pm, and a coffee shop. “These new ventures are a clear fulfillment of several long-term goals, and it’s exciting to watch,” said Jane McGuire, Sweetwater Main Street Director. “We are so proud to play a part of this process.” Sweetwater is home to so many unique shopping experiences and dining options. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 15th Annual Heritage Happening Gala and Auction

reparations are well underway for the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center’s 15th annual Heritage Happening gala and auction. The theme of this year’s fundraising event is Smoky Mountain Memories, which honors the purpose of the Heritage Center to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. The Heritage Happening will be held at the Center’s home in Townsend on Saturday evening, May 19. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild’s of Knoxville. Guests will enjoy live Appalachian music and storyteller Elizbeth Rose as emcee. The wide array of unique items to be auctioned this year includes beautiful artwork from area artisans, destination vacation trips, wine, Smoky Mountain activities, and food and dining experiences, thanks to the generosity of donors across East Tennessee and to the dedication of our Guild members who solicit these diverse items. The Heritage Center Guild was founded in 2003 by a group of 21 women with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-be-built Heritage Center museum. According to
the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. Exciting new exhibits each year attract patrons of all ages, and new facilities are under construction. This year more than 8,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s educational programs. Invitations to Smoky Mountain Memories will be mailed in April to Heritage Center members and past attendees, but all are welcome to purchase tickets by calling the Heritage Center at 865-448-0044 or by visiting www. gsmheritagecenter.org. Tickets are $125 per person, $90 of which is tax deductible. Online pre-bidding on silent auction items will open on May 1st, and a code to access the auction site will be emailed to ticket holders on that date. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c) (3) Museum and Cultural Center. The Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. Admission is free for Heritage Center members, adults are $8, seniors 60+ and children ages 6-17 are $6, and children 5 and under are free. Anne of Green Gables at Knoxville Children’s Theatre May 4-20

noxville Children’s Theatre will present 14 live performances of the popular coming-of-age story, “Anne of Green Gables.” This beloved tale of how an unwanted orphan makes her way in Avonlea, Nova Scotia, has been adapted for film, television, and the stage. Performances will be May 4-20 at KCT, located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne’s coming-of-age are here: Her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, and, ultimately, the saving of Green Gables. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book has sold more than 50 million copies and is read around the world in more than 35 languages. The play is performed by 24 talented actors from ages 9-16. Averi Walker, a 13-year-old veteran of more than a dozen KCT plays, plays Anne. Two teens from South Knoxville, Charlotte Stark and Boone Sommers, play the Cuthberts, and Bella Patterson and Logan Bell play

ne of the best concerts East Tennesseans will ever see is coming to the Tennessee Theatre beginning at 7:30 pm (not the normal 8 pm start time). There’ll be a quiz at the end of this article. Because Chicago is coming to Knoxville, I was afforded the opportunity to chat with one of the band’s co-founders, Jimmy Pankow. While chit-chatting before getting down to talking about the upcoming show, I was delighted to learn that Jimmy is a fellow Tennessean by way of the Nashville area. He shared how that came about. “I relocated the family here almost eight years ago for a better life and, indeed, we found it,” said Jimmy. “We escaped the L.A. area. It was not doable any longer. My children were approaching high school age, and I did not like the idea of them growing up in a third world country. It was overcrowded and dangerous. I explored options and, actually, Nashville made a lot of sense – not only for a better quality of life, but a simpler life, a more affordable life.” As for what we can expect from the band at the Tennessee Theatre, Jimmy shared: “The band is just better than ever. The band is slamming. People are loving the shows. We’re doing sell-out business. We’re far from throwing in the towel! “The fact is, people not only love this music, they keep wanting more. They want to come back, and they want to re-live the

hen the Quebe Sisters from Texas take a stage, and the triple-threat fiddle champions start playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are usually transfixed, then blown away. It’s partly because the trio’s vocal and instrumental performances are authentic all-Americana, all the time, respectful of the artists that inspired them the most. And whether the Quebes (rhymes with “maybe”) are decked out in denims and boots or fashionably dressed to the nines in makeup, skirts, and heels, the freshfaced, clean-cut sisters, all in their 20s, look as good as they sound. Not surprisingly, the Quebe Sisters win standing ovations at just about every show. It’s been that way since 2000, when they started fiddling
together as pre-teens. The sisters’ past is as colorful and eventful as their future is bright. Growing up in Burleson, a southern suburb of Fort Worth, Hulda, Sophia, and Grace were ages 7, 10, and 12 in 1998 when they attended their first local fiddle competition in nearby Denton and decided fiddling was what they wanted to do. The girls earned solo
and group accolades early on, winning state and national championships in their respective age groups in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The Quebes’ evolution from the whiz-kid Western swing fiddlers they were back then to the smokin’-hot young adult Americana band they are today is a remarkable story, by any measure. Along with headlining their own shows to ever-growing audiences, they’ve shared stages with American music legends like Willie Nelson, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Ray Price, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, Riders in the Sky, and many others. Pull-Out Baskets Sturdy, wire baskets make it easy for a child to see their toys or older children to quickly identify clothing items. They can also be used for a hamper to toss dirty clothes into.
Adjustable Rods and Shelves If kids can’t easily reach hangers, shelves, and bins, they’re not going to put things away. For younger children, hang adjustable rods at lower, child-friendly levels. As a child grows, those rods are adjusted to accommodate bigger clothing items. Shelves can also be added and adjusted.
Color-Coded Hangers For younger children, establish which color hangers will be used for different types of clothes. Separate clothes into categories of school, play, and dress.
Hooks Placed at a child’s eye level, or within their reach along the inside walls of the closet, hooks keep accessories such as caps, purses, and necklaces organized and easy to reach. Or hang the next day’s outfit to simplify the morning routine.

he Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, Lenoir City hosted the “Painting with a Purpose” painting party with family and friends. Sparkling cider and hors d’oeuvres were served as the artists worked on their pieces. Teresa Karimian, owner of Unique Technique Painting, donated her time and talents to the cause, assisting guests with their creations and exploring the therapeutic benefits of art. The canvases, illustrated by the minds of those with Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions, will be on display during the Art for Alzheimer’s Auction on April 17 at the memory care community, located at 155 Morning Pointe Drive. The associates, families, and local volunteers are credited with pulling the gallery together for the seniors, who are the true stars of the show. Every week the residents will engage in creative self-expression as they prepare work to be featured. Funds raised from the auction will benefit the upcoming Alzheimer’s Tennessee walk in Knoxville. “Our volunteers have been very drawn to what we do here at the Lantern, and they are happy to give their time to seeing this project come to light,” said Maggie Devaney, Lantern Program Director. “We find so much joy from seeing our residents exercise their creativity with colors on the canvas.”

We hope you will enjoy this recent interview with Jesse. MV: How have your years of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner prepared you for today’s residential real estate marketplace? Jesse: Success in any worthwhile endeavor involves planning. Before launching any new business, every aspect of that new venture must be thoroughly examined, considered, and planned for. Comprehensive analysis and plans must then be developed. But, even more importantly, you need to consider the human component for every transaction, never forgetting that there are family members emotionally invested in every home that is bought or sold.
MV: What is the most important characteristic or skill required to succeed in residential real estate? Jesse: While there are a variety of skills required for success, the most important skill is the ability to listen to your clients. Without the ability to listen, all of your other skills are of little value. MV: You had multiple real estate companies to select from. What made you choose Exit Real Estate Professionals Network? Jesse: That’s simple. It was their comprehensive approach and commitment to provide a level of client service that is uncommon in today’s marketplace. It was the same commitment I made to each of my customers in my retail businesses that was required to achieve success; a commitment to provide a level of service that most people thought no longer existed today. MV: How would you describe a typical “buyer’s” experience? Jesse: As I stated earlier, it begins with listening. What are the buyer’s expectations? What are their priorities (schools, shopping, proximity to work, emergency services, churches)? We need to determine budget and pursue mortgage pre-approval. These are just a few of the requirements we need to consider, allowing us to transform ourselves from a real estate professional to a trusted advisor and ally. MV: How would you describe a typical “seller’s” experience? Jesse: Well, listening still is my number one priority. We need to establish a current market price for the seller’s home, as well as a realistic timeframe for the sale to take place. There are also a large number of recommendations we might make to the seller to enhance the probability for success at the highest possible price. This is also where our team goes to work to create a comprehensive marketing plan designed to achieve a successful outcome. MV: How important is communication in the buying and selling process? Jesse: Next to listening, communication is perhaps the most often neglected component in the real estate experience. Buyers and sellers deserve to be in the loop to whichever degree they wish
to be included. Also, with all of the communication tools available today, there’s really no excuse not to keep buyers and sellers informed. Regardless, it’s the number one complaint we hear from buyers and sellers today. he foothills of the Smoky Mountains come to life with bluegrass music, arts and crafts, time honored traditions, and Appalachian cooking at the annual Townsend in the Smokies Spring Festival. Scheduled for May 4-5 at the Smoky Mountain Visitors Center (7906 E. Lamar Alexander Pkwy) in Townsend, the Townsend in the Smokies Spring Festival and provides an atmosphere where family and friends of all ages can partake in time-honored Appalachian traditions at the free community event. Parking is $10 per day, with proceeds benefiting the Townsend Volunteer Fire Department. Two-day parking passes are available at the Visitors Center for $15. For everyone’s convenience, a free shuttle service provides transportation to and from the different Townsend sites participating in the weekend’s festivities from 10:30 am to 6 pm both days. “The spring festival provides an opportunity for our community to share the area’s history and heritage with families, friends, and visitors,” said Jim McBride, festival chair. “We all cherish our traditions, and there is no better way to celebrate them than to showcase them during the beautiful spring weather at the festival.” An event for all ages, the spring festival will center around traditional and contemporary bluegrass and mountain music, along with clogging and square dancing, art and craft booths, numerous Appalachian demonstrations, old-fashioned kids’ games, and Southern food, such as fried pies and kettle corn. Festival-goers can also take the opportunity to enjoy an interactive walking tour featuring a full-sized engine, coal and water tank at the Little River Railroad and Lumber Company Museum, as well as a unique shopping experience at Townsend’s downtown – Trillium Cove. On Friday and Saturday, from 11:30 am until after 9 pm, musical performances are scheduled on stage inviting locals and visitors to bring lawn chairs from home and sit back, relax, and enjoy the toe-tapping, mountain tunes. Arts, Crafts and Appalachian Demonstrations The festival grounds will showcase numerous art and craft booths, and local artisans will be demonstrating their talents while visitors watch. Among the many unique demonstrations will be cornmeal making, antique farm equipment, raptors, and apple and peach butter making. In addition, visitors will have the chance to experience the area’s natural history at the Cades Cove Preservation and walk through a replica of an old Appalachian church. The church replica at this year’s festival will be sponsored by CHilhowee Area Ministries (CHARM). Storytelling and Local Authors Local storytellers will educate and entertain visitors of all ages at this year’s spring festival, delighting them with mountain stories that will paint a picture of Appalachian heritage. The spring festival’s featured author is Roy Oliver, author of Last Man, from Tremont. He will hold signings on Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. here is a new Caregivers Support Group that started last month. The purpose of the group is to provide support and information to caregivers of all types: Caring for spouses, parents, special needs children, and grandchildren. The Arts Center’s 2017-18 House Blend Concert Series Closes with September Song on May 11

he Athens Area Council for the Arts is pleased to bring back “September Song” featuring beloved local musicians on Friday, May 11, at 7:30 at The Arts Center in Athens. Join Lindsey and Andrew Kimball and their band, September Song, in the Sue E. Trotter Theater for an evening of new and well-loved favorites featuring plenty of tight three-part harmony that concert-goers have come to expect from the group. The band includes local musicians Joe Littleton, Kyle Littleton, and Nathan Crisp, as well as Jennifer Nunley and Liz Schreck. The band also welcomes special guest Cody Housley. “Members of September Song have served as our house band, backing up many local performers in our House Blend Concert Series events and special events such as ‘Jazzy Christmas’ and ‘Sisters,’” said Lauren Shepherd, AACA Executive Director. “The band is a familiar presence on our stage, but it’s been several years since they headlined a concert of their own in the Black Box, so we slated them as our

an we all just send up a prayer that May will actually feel like spring? April was ridiculous! We always have temperature fluctuations, but rarely have I seen a month where you could go from shorts and t-shirt one day to a parka the next, and then back to shorts again. Those temperature swings were hard on us and hard on the plants. Nevertheless, many of our plants (especially Dogwoods and Azaleas) put on quite the show. Nature is a pretty resilient thing. Some plants did take quite a beating during the winter, so let’s talk about those first. Loropetalums that were planted within the last year were hit very hard. Every plant that I have checked, however, is showing new leaf buds. They may not have a single leaf left, but if the branches are flexible and you see swollen leaf buds, leave them alone. They will come back and be stronger than a new plant. Hydrangeas were also hit hard. Many of them were showing a lot of new growth, and then the temperature dropped and killed it. The good news is that most will recover. The bad news is that your old growth blooms no longer exist. If it is a variety that blooms on old and new wood, you will get some blooms. If it is a variety that blooms on old wood, you will have a green bush. Some of our Hostas also look pretty sad. What you need to do depends on the degree of damage. If the entire plant looks terrible, you can cut it down. Secondary leaves will emerge, but it will be smaller than usual. If just a few leaves look bad, clip those off. Don’t leave mushy leaves in place, because it will set up the plant for insect and disease issues. The last victim I am going to talk about is evergreen shrubs that had put out new growth. Much of that growth was damaged and has turned or will turn brown. You can just lightly prune that off later on this month after the plants have recovered.
Here is the main thing I want you to remember about plants that are stressed from cold damage or drought or anything else: Leave them alone! Our instinct is to try to “help” them by fertilizing and pruning them. This just adds additional stress. Give them a few weeks to recover and then remove damaged foliage and add an organic fertilizer if it makes you feel better. Applying a strong synthetic fertilize may just push it over the edge. Now let’s move on to planting. You can plant just about anything now except cool season veggies. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and warm season vegetables like to be planted in May, because the soil temperature has warmed and the air temperature is more stable. Those of you who have been chomping at the bit since March are free to play in the dirt! Are you planting vegetables this year? Remember that all veggies need at least six hours of sun. If you don’t have enough sunny space for a full-sized garden, try raised beds or even containers. Most herbs and vegetables will do well in either of those. Do your research, however. A few plants do not play well together. Also remember that some tomatoes can get very large, so save yourself the trouble of flimsy tomato cages and buy a sturdy one or make one from fencing. Those of you who planted earlier have now reached the maintenance stage. This means you need to check your plants daily for water, insects, and fungal problems. It is much easier to treat these problems if you find them early. Good hygiene will prevent many fungal problems, so remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves. If insects have invaded, make sure that it is a problem insect before you start spraying. Some insects are beneficial. For example, one
ladybug can clean all the aphids off your tomato plant in a single day! If it is a problem insect, always start with the least toxic product first. Usually this is an insecticidal soap. You also need to start fertilizing container gardens and annuals now. This is especially true of flowers that bloom prolifically. They tend to suck all the nutrients out of the soil very quickly. Don’t forget our birds and our pollinators! I encourage all of you to plant at least one plant in your yard that is friendly to these creatures. We have lists here, or check online for ideas. If you have bird feeders, please make sure they are clean and full. There are lots of babies, so those bird parents are busy and hungry! Monroe County Animal Shelter’s Dogs of the Week

his week’s Dogs of the Week at the Monroe County Animal Shelter are Grizzly and Luna. Grizzly is a 1+ year old cur/mountain mix. He has a beautiful brown coat with black and white patches. Grizzly came to us because he did not get along with his family’s new smaller dog. He loves to take walks and enjoys back rubs. He would love to live with an active family who has kids. He might seem shy when you first meet him, but this loveable pup will warm your heart. He may just be the family member you’ve been looking for. We would also like to introduce you to Luna, a purebred Doberman Retriever currently in residence. Luna was surrendered by her owners when they found she could outwit their invisible fence. Since physical fencing was not a possibility for them, Luna was not safe in their care so they made the hard choice to re-home her. She’s a little over two years old, is brilliant, protective, and great with children. According to the FIV Cat Rescue Organization, many shelters (both “kill” and “no-kill”) routinely euthanize all cats who test positive for FIV antibodies. Why? Because one time it was thought that FIV positive cats were highly infectious and the disease spread rapidly. She will be spayed, is up to date on vaccinations, and will be Microchipped and ready for adoption. Another myth about FIV is how rapidly it can spread. It can also be transmitted via blood, in utero, and from the milk of an infected mother cat. Many FIV-positive cats and FIV-negative cats live together in the same home for years without spreading the virus to the non-infected cats. There are no specific signs of FIV infection. Other than that, FIV-positive cats tend to live normal lives in a stress-free environment and have a normal length of life. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans. The risk of an FIV-positive cat spreading the virus to an FIV-negative cat can be minimized by putting both cats in separate rooms until you are confident that they will not fight with each other. Spaying or neutering your pets will also reduce any risk. FIV-positive cats should be strictly INDOOR to minimize contact with outdoor cats that may lead to fighting and can spread the infection. Can FIV-positive cats have a good and long life? Yes, FIV-positive cats can live normal lives, both in quality and duration. They just need to be monitored for infections and dental issues. But if they’re well cared for, they can be healthy, happy, wonderful pets. Feed a good, healthy diet (not raw due to immunity issues with uncooked meat and eggs), an immunity boosting supplement, and check-ups twice per year at the vet. enoir City High School HOSA students enjoy crafting with the residents at Morning Pointe of Lenoir City. The students took time to visit with the residents and make fresh flower arrangements for the dining room tables. The young people visit the seniors each week to spend time with them and do crafts and projects such as this one. Through the life enrichment program at Morning Pointe, local schools and organizations get the chance to interact with the residents to add a little fun to their day.

“S
omeone once told me that about managing weight and eating well,” said 52-year-old Kevin Waters, a husband, dad, and entrepreneur. “You pay for it now with your money to eat well and exercise or you will pay in medical bills and brokenness in the future. Your choice.” Kevin’s 6’3” height allowed him to hide his weight, which tended to range between 210 and 225 pounds. But at an annual physical, he was surprised to learn that his weight had increased to 232 pounds. “The doctor also informed me that my blood levels were elevated, which increased my risk for Type II diabetes,” he said. In January 2017, Kevin did what he had done so often in the past: Starve himself and also eat better. “It worked initially… it always does,” said Kevin. “I was down to 219 pounds and feeling that it was good enough to go back to the bad habits of snacking at night and not exercising.” By April, Kevin’s weight began to climb again. By October, his weight was back at 228, and he was feeling bad. Bad habits, 60-hour work weeks, and a sedentary lifestyle were all undermining Kevin’s goal of enjoying a fuller and healthier life. It was time to act! Kevin and his wife scheduled an initial assessment and complimentary workout with Andrew Henderson, trainer at Fitness Together. “We were sore for days!” said Kevin. “But something clicked. I discovered the importance of accountability. There was something about the physical environment, the encouragement, the fact that it was on my calendar.” Today Kevin works out two to three times a week with Mac Bowers, a certified Fitness Together trainer. Kevin is down to 205 and continuing to drop, hoping to hit the 190s for the first time since the late 1990s. He feels stronger than he was at 35, with more muscle mass and physical strength.
