The Heart of Florida’s Emerald Coast D

estin, Fort Walton Beach, and Okaloosa Island make up the heart of Florida’s Emerald Coast. Known for sugar-white sand, cascading emerald water, and long, sunny days, the Emerald Coast is a fantastic year-round vacation destination. Whether you like to golf, want to try your hand at reeling in “the big one,” or simply want to toss your towel on the sand for a few hours of relaxation, you can find that, and so much more, along the beautiful beaches of Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and Okaloosa Island.

Destin is known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” and it is just that – a fishing village. Throughout the years, it has grown up to also include attractions, events, and shopping. Here you can enjoy fast-paced watersports, fly high above the water in a parasail, and ride the waves to

shore on a paddle board. You can also stroll the famous harbor, jump aboard a charter fishing boat, and try your own luck at sea. Don’t forget to take your catch to one of the many delicious Gulf-to-Table restaurants in town to have your catch cooked for you! Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island offer a slightly slower pace while still allowing you to enjoy the emerald water and white sand beaches of Northwest Florida that you’ve come to love. Enjoy long days on the sand, splash in your Fort Walton Beach hotel or condo pool, and then head out to the boardwalk for a pickup game of volleyball. In the evenings, enjoy a scrumptious shrimp dinner at one of the delicious restaurants on the island. (continued on page 2A)

Emerald Coast cover article continued ... Sugar White Sand & Emerald Water

Why is Destin so lucky?

Yes, the sand in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and Okaloosa Island really is sugar white and powder soft. It’s as brilliant as our photos depict – no Photoshop required! This is because the sand contains finely ground quartz crystal. At the end of the last Ice Age, the world’s temperatures began warming, icecaps began melting, and large volumes of water were carried by rivers to the world’s oceans. The rising Apalachicola River, originating in the Appalachian Mountains, carried quartz particles down into the Gulf of Mexico and deposited them along our coast. Over time, the sea level rose and the quartz sand formed the shoreline. This beautiful white sand remains cool even in the heat of summer and gives the water its trademark emerald color by reflecting sunlight back up through the surf.

The underwater 100-fathom curve, where our relatively shallow waters drop to dramatic depths, is a miracle of nature. This curve draws closer in to Destin than to any other spot in Florida, creating the speediest deep-water access on the Gulf and therefore, the speediest access to fantastic deep-sea fishing. As a result, the Destin Harbor boasts the largest and most elaborately equipped fleet in the state with more than 200 charter boats. Popular and delicious catches in the area include various species of tuna, grouper, and snapper. Blue marlin, cobia, and pompano are also easy catches throughout our waters. The Emerald Coast also yields more billfish each year than all other Gulf ports combined. In addition to great fishing, the Emerald Coast also offers breathtaking diving. Various reef clusters reveal four-foot basket sponges and purple sea whips, as well as vibrant yellow angelfish, six-foot manta rays, and protected 350-pound sea turtles.

Activities, Attractions & Annual Events More than 300 festivals and events take place along our coast each year. Below, find a sampling of what to expect each season. Visit our event calendar to see more of what’s happening along the beach.

Activities One thing you won’t hear while on vacation to Florida’s Emerald Coast is “I’m bored!” The coast is packed with things to do, see, and eat. Hit the water on jet-skis or a paddle board. Sail above the emerald water in a parasail or even a helicopter. Sink below the waves to visit with wildlife on a SNUBA or snorkeling adventure. Or climb aboard a dolphin cruise, charter boat, or even a pirate ship to sail the seas. Off the water, stay cool with a visit to our local water park in Destin, Big Kahuna’s. Or take a break from the heat yet still enjoy the sunshine at fantastic open-air shopping destinations such as Destin Commons and the Silver Sands Premium Outlets. Museums and activity centers, such as the Destin History & Fishing Museum, Indian Temple Mound Museum, and Emerald Coast Science Center, are not only educational and interesting, but fun indoor options if you need a little beach break. Delicious, local dining is available for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and we always recommend the seafood! Stroll the Destin harbor or visit the boardwalk on Okaloosa Island to take in a great view and some fun with your meal. To taste truly fresh, Gulf-sourced fish fare, visit one of our Gulf to Table restaurants.

Access by Car U.S. Highway 98 travels along the Emerald Coast, edging along the Gulf of Mexico through Destin, Fort Walton Beach, and Okaloosa Island. From I-10, exit on to Highway 85 south at the Crestview/Fort Walton Beach exit and head straight to the beach!

Access by Air The Destin – Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is serviced by American Airlines, Delta, United, Allegiant, and Contour. Direct flights are available from a number of cities, including Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Memphis, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Newark, and many more. T

From the Publisher

he second Sunday in May is traditionally set aside to celebrate mothers, past and present. Women who fill the role of mom deserve to be honored for all their contributions and sacrifices that they show daily for their families. Moms are role models for their children and their loving, caring demeanor will greatly impact their children’s upbringing. Those children will in turn go on to impact the lives of all they come in contact with daily. So moms should not take their role lightly. We, as sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, should make sure we take the time to honor the person in our lives who fills the role of mom not only on Mother’s Day but every day. It’s as simple as taking time out of a busy schedule to touch mom with a phone call or an unscheduled visit with a hug and an “I love you.” These are all gentle reminders to mom of how much she is appreciated. My own mother has been gone now for a number of years, and I miss her very much. I miss talking with her, visiting her and helping her to make those special holiday dinners. But every Mother’s Day, I reflect on my mom and all the wonderful memories I have of my days growing up. I even take out the old photo albums and relive the family moments captured on film that are so precious and all that I have left of mom. This Mother’s Day make sure you honor your mom. Your time with her on this earth is not unlimited so make the most of it. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views wish all moms a very Happy Mother’s Day.

T

wenty years ago our salon’s founder, Faye Whitehead, had the brilliance to bring a physician into the salon to perform non-surgical procedures for our guests. Since that time, the injectable cosmetic industry has skyrocketed into enormous popularity with the over 40 crowd. While the growth of this market has made injectables routine, there are still many who are petrified of having something injected into their face. This month’s column will describe the actual applications from my own experiences and maybe even dispel a couple of myths associated with the procedures. First, there are two primary types of treatment for the lines and wrinkles of the face. While there are a variety of uses for BOTOX®, it is most commonly used on the lines and wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. Fillers such as JUVÉDERM® or JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® are used on the larger lines formed near the nose and mouth and in some cases as a mid-face filler. The BOTOX® applications are the most common and in my own personal experience the easiest to receive as a patient. The most common myth is that this procedure “freezes” the muscles and will not allow movement, while in fact, they actually relax the muscles of the face. Several injections are made into the muscles just beneath the skin, and they are completely pain free. The only part of the application that is even the least bit uncomfortable is the piercing sound made by the needle at the injection site. Swelling and bruising are not a factor in my experiences, and just a couple of ice cubes after your treatment for a few minutes will have you leaving the salon with no visible side effects. The final result is not immediate and may take up to two weeks to achieve the desired effects. The lifespan of this product varies from person to person and depends largely on the elasticity of the skin. In my own experiences, the actual effects of the product last between

three and five months. However, the muscle atrophy that occurs during that time can keep the wrinkles at bay for an additional six to eight weeks after the product has worn off, which increases the total lifespan. Brian K. Whitehead Fillers are quite different Managing Partner in their application and their The Village Salon effects. JUVÉDERM® and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® are the two types of fillers The Village Salon used in my own experiences, 222 Village Square and their application can come in Tellico Village with some slight discomfort. 865-458-9332 Normally a topical numbing thevillagesalon@aol.com gel is applied to the injection site to help with the discomfort, and in some cases, a numbing agent is mixed in with the actual filler. Some slight swelling and bruising can occur, and it is best to apply ice to the area immediately following the procedure. Also, for some reason, drinking a little extra water in the 24 hours following the injection seems to help. The lifespan for the fillers also varies from person to person, but for me, they seem to last between 15 and 18 months. Hopefully you may find some of this information helpful if you find yourself searching for some non-surgical cosmetic help. The Village Salon is proudly partnered with Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD. If you happen to have any questions, feel free to contact me at The Village Salon, and don’t forget to mention you heard about this from our column to receive your first-time discount. he Museum of East Tennessee History was recently awarded three Awards of Excellence and an Award of Commendation by the Tennessee Association of Museums (TAM) for exhibits, programs, audio visuals, and staff. The awards were presented at the Tennessee Association of Museums Conference held in Selmer, Tennessee, on March 21. An Award of Excellence was presented for best temporary exhibit for Rock of Ages: East Tennessee’s Marble Industry, as well as An Award of Commendation for best Audio Visual Exhibit Component for the introduction video produced in partnership with East Tennessee PBS. region’s rich marble history, the importance of the stone to the local jobs and economy, and highlighted buildings, sculptures, and furniture made from the unique stone. The exhibit also facilitated a variety of well received public programs and partnerships with Candora Marble Company, Knoxville Museum of Art, and the Tennessee Pink Marble Trail, to name a few. ETHS’s new children’s event, “Monsters at the Museum,” was the recipient of an Award of Excellence in the Special Event category. Nearly 400 people partook in the free Halloween event in its first year. Attendees participated in a variety of fun Halloween-themed crafts, games, and activities, with storytelling that focused on regional folklore and superstitions, such as the wampus cat, while artifacts demonstrating eerie Victorian mourning traditions were on display. The event also featured museum scavenger hunts, costume contests, and trick or treating. The Second Annual Monsters at the Museum event is scheduled for October 27. Hannah Rexrode, ETHS education and volunteer coordinator, was recognized as the East Tennessee Emerging Museum Professional. Hannah joined the ETHS staff in December 2016 and has since brought enthusiasm and new ideas to the historical society’s team. Hanna’s experience in children’s programming and interpretation at Belle Mead Plantation and Historic Travellers Rest in Nashville have improved ETHS’s school tours, outreach, and docent programs. Mrs. Rexrode has also been instrumental in developing new family programming, including the Monsters at the Museum event and a WWI Family Day coming up on June 9. The purpose of the TAM Awards of Excellence is to recognize, encourage, and promote excellence within the activities of the Tennessee museum community.

“My husband, Frank, and I bought our lot from Jim Doyel in January 1987. We always felt that we had one of the best lots and best realtors in the Village. We built our home and moved in 1990. Years later, after Frank passed away, I decided to sell and get a smaller place. I immediately called Jim and listed my home with him. With the help of Jim and my brother, Don, a buyer was found, and we just closed on the sale. I have known Jim for 31 years. He is my preferred Realtor. Graduation

I

t’s that time of the year once again. Time has really flown, and now we find ourselves at this special time when we celebrate our seniors graduating from high school and college. They are about to embark on an exciting new phase of their young lives, whether they are pursuing to further their education or to seek a lifelong career. According to Wikipedia, “Ceremonies for graduating students date from the first universities in Europe in the 12th century. The typical dress for graduation are gowns and hoods or hats adapted from the daily dress of university staff in the Middle Ages, which was in turn based on the attire worn by medieval clergy.” From the Daily Universe: “The traditional graduation dress of cap and gown started in the 13th and 14th centuries when universities began forming throughout Europe. The graduation cap and gown date back to England.” From The Daily Universe: “The ceremony, in

Islamic tradition, is vindication of knowledge that licenses one to teach what one has learned.” Regardless of just where the tradition of graduation gift giving arose, Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater has a selection of gifts for your graduate that will be cherished and long remembered. Choose from a hand-crafted fine writing instrument, art piece to decorate their college dorm room or first office, or a variety of other gift items. Visit us at Gallery on Main and discover that perfect gift for your graduate and create that memory that will last a lifetime. Gallery on Main 109 Morris Street Sweetwater, TN 37874 423-337-7400

Sweetwater Main Street Opens New Doors!

T

he year 2018 is looking to be a banner year in historic downtown Sweetwater. In the past few months, Sweetwater’s nationally accredited Main Street district has helped four new businesses open. Building entrepreneurs is an important goal for the Sweetwater Main Street organization. In partnership with the City of Sweetwater and funded in part with a grant through the State of TN Economic and Community Development, a formerly vacant building in downtown Sweetwater is being transformed into a business incubator. The beautiful historic building, once known as the Carter Brick Mason Building, is owned by Sweetwater Architect Sam Moser. His vision for the building has created space for a restaurant, coffee shop and bakery, a retail store, and several residential apartments in the future, as well as the relocation of his own architectural office. Last fall the first business, Her Majesty Boutique, opened to much fanfare. It hasn’t been unusual to see a line out the door of this trendy second floor boutique. Clothing and apparel, jewelry, accessories, and more, as well as a new children’s line, Reign Couture, have drawn many new shoppers to downtown Sweetwater. The shop is owned by Ashley Ingram, Miss Tennessee United States 2017. “It’s a very good thing to have young, smart

Photos by Napier Photography

entrepreneurs in Sweetwater,” said Mayor Doyle Lowe. “We’re so glad to play a part in these businesses success.” In January, Vittorino’s Italian Cucina Restaurant opened and has stayed busy even through the traditionally slow months of January and February. The cuisine is fresh and made with love by owner Rosa. The venue is beautiful and cozy. Open Tuesday through Sunday, a meal in Vittorino’s Italian Cucina Restaurant is well worth the trip to Sweetwater. March 1st welcomed the Cup Runneth Over Coffeehouse and Sweet Station Bake Shop. The Coffehouse serves Crimson Cup coffee, as well as a variety of hot teas, espressos, cappuccinos, and more. Paired with a treat or breakfast item from the Bake Shop, and this stop is a must when visiting Sweetwater. The eclectic interior spotlights the original brick walls and locally made countertops, tables, and chairs. A space was created for live entertainment, and the back section of the building

has a meeting room available for parties and gatherings. Several years ago the Sweetwater Main Street organization hired a consultant for a master plan as part of a grant through the East TN Foundation. The process of creating the master plan identified several goals for downtown Sweetwater. Some of those goals included a restaurant serving pizza that more locals would support, businesses that stayed open past 5 pm, and a coffee shop. “These new ventures are a clear fulfillment of several long-term goals, and it’s exciting to watch,” said Jane McGuire, Sweetwater Main Street Director. “We are so proud to play a part of this process.” Sweetwater is home to so many unique shopping experiences and dining options. These new businesses will help continue to draw visitors and locals alike and enhance what is already a great day trip. So make plans to visit Sweetwater soon! Tons of Gift Ideas for What Does Your Gift Say? Mom, Dad & Grad W

W

ith the start of May, families will be celebrating Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, as well as honoring their graduates. Finding the perfect gift is often a challenge as we set out to locate those just-so-perfect gifts that are truly unique and that will remind our loved ones of that very special day. Shopping at the big-box stores increases the likelihood of gift duplication, and they have a selection of gifts that are often generic. At Cones Cupboard Antiques, you will discover gifts, many that are one-of-a-kind, that are destined to become legacy items that will not only be treasured by the gift’s recipient, but that will also be shared with future generations. With a large selection of both antique and vintage items to select from, how about an antique rail top or secretary’s desk? Or perhaps vintage glassware or a Sterling silver serving set that can be used for special events or as a home décor centerpiece for mom? Also, for dad, there are a variety of nostalgic gift items that will remind him of fond memories of the past. You’ll also discover an eclectic mixture of antique, vintage, and unique gift items all personally selected by the owner of Cones Cupboard Antiques, Peggy Cones, who enjoys sharing with her shop’s visitors her knowledge of antiques she has acquired in her more than 25 years as an antique collector and retailer. Discover everything from glassware, Sterling silver, china, furniture, figurines, quilts, décor, gift items, and much more. But, most of all, discover gifts that have both a history and a future as a treasured family heirloom. Skip the big-box stores and select a truly unique gift for mom, dad, and grad this year from Cones Cupboard Antiques. And moms and grandmothers be sure to check out their latest arrivals in their new infants clothing section. They are beyond precious!

hat do our gifts say about us? We want them to say we are thoughtful, but are we always hitting the mark? For some of us, it requires thinking outside the box!

Hostess Gifts

If you are traveling out of the region, you might want to consider taking something from your home area like food or locally crafted goods such as pottery or woodwork. Other thoughtful ideas are things people can use every day, like napkins (with or without the napkin holder) or notecards from a local artist.

Wedding Gifts

Do you always buy off of a registry? Young people always need a lot of things, as most are setting up households for the first time. Think about a distinctive piece of pottery or a hand-turned serving bowl – a luxury that someone would likely not buy for themselves. Though gift cards are not considered by some to be thoughtful, sometimes gift certificates are the perfect gift. It is hard to buy art for someone else, so a gift certificate to a shop with art may be the perfect choice. This allows the new couple to buy that perfect piece to make their house a home.

Birthday Gifts

What does your friend love? From that special friend to the “thinking of you” gift, try to pick something that will make them smile each and every time they see it. Is it a floral arrangement, hand-crafted jewelry, a trinket for a shelf or table (think birds and bunnies!), or a garden stake or statuary? At The Town Framery & Gifts, we are here to help you find that special gift for that special person in your life. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 15th Annual Heritage Happening Gala and Auction

P

reparations are well underway for the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center’s 15th annual Heritage Happening gala and auction. The theme of this year’s fundraising event is Smoky Mountain Memories, which honors the purpose of the Heritage Center to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. The Heritage Happening will be held at the Center’s home in Townsend on Saturday evening, May 19. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild’s of Knoxville. Guests will enjoy live Appalachian music and storyteller Elizbeth Rose as emcee. The wide array of unique items to be auctioned this year includes beautiful artwork from area artisans, destination vacation trips, wine, Smoky Mountain activities, and food and dining experiences, thanks to the generosity of donors across East Tennessee and to the dedication of our Guild members who solicit these diverse items. To preview auction items, visit the Heritage Happening website at www.auctria. com/auction/HeritageHappening2018. Items are continually being added, so check the website frequently. The Heritage Center Guild was founded in 2003 by a group of 21 women with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-be-built Heritage Center museum. According to

the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. Exciting new exhibits each year attract patrons of all ages, and new facilities are under construction. This year more than 8,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s educational programs. Invitations to Smoky Mountain Memories will be mailed in April to Heritage Center members and past attendees, but all are welcome to purchase tickets by calling the Heritage Center at 865-448-0044 or by visiting www. gsmheritagecenter.org. Tickets are $125 per person, $90 of which is tax deductible. Online pre-bidding on silent auction items will open on May 1st, and a code to access the auction site will be emailed to ticket holders on that date. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c) (3) Museum and Cultural Center. The Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday noon to 5 pm. Admission is free for Heritage Center members, adults are $8, seniors 60+ and children ages 6-17 are $6, and children 5 and under are free. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is located between the traffic light and the national park entrance on scenic Highway 73. For more information, call 865-448-0044.

very year we hear news reports about people getting sick after being bitten by mosquitoes carrying diseases such as West Nile virus or the Zika virus. Since we’ve been experiencing frequent rain so far this year, you’ll probably notice mosquitoes very soon as the weather warms. The best way to help lower your risk of getting bitten is to take precautions like using Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program. Offered from May through October, this program is an affordable and effective way to interrupt the seven-day breeding life cycle of mosquitoes from egg to biting adult and eliminate these pesky nuisances from your yard! Dayton’s pest professionals know the specific areas to treat that foster mosquito breeding such as standing water, waterscapes, and mosquito resting areas like landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Just like we come outside more when temperatures rise, so do other warm weather pests such as carpenter bees, ants, and wasps. Dayton’s treats the source of where these pests are coming from, such as nesting places underground or inside wooden eaves, which is essential to keep them from coming back! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather pests with an annual pest agreement.

Other services provided by Dayton’s include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, pest control for ladybugs/ bedbugs, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation. Tickets on Sale for the May 18 Clarence Brown Theatre Gala Honoring Broadway Actor and Choreographer Rusty Mowery

T

ickets to the Clarence Brown Theatre 2018 Gala are on sale now. Tickets are $200 per person and can be reserved online at www.clarencebrowntheatre.com/galaRSVP. The event, which will be held Friday, May 18, at 6:30 pm at The Mill & Mine, located 227 W. Depot Avenue, will honor Broadway Actor and Choreographer, Rusty Mowery, with the CBT Artistic Achievement Award. CBT Gala attendees will join Honoree Mowery, Producing Artistic Director Cal MacLean, and Managing Director Tom Cervone for a show-stopping evening of glitz and glam with dinner, dessert, blind drawings, and special live entertainment you won’t want to miss! Mowery is the associate choreographer of the TONY Award-winning musical “Kinky Boots.” He has set “Kinky Boots” all across the world with productions in London (Olivier Award winner for Best Musical and Best Choreography), Toronto (DORA Award winner for Best Musical), South Korea, U.S. 1st National Tour, U.S. Bus and Truck Tour, Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane – Helpmann Award winner for Best Choreography), Tokyo, and Germany. His other Broadway credits include “CATS,” “Ragtime,” “Seussical,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Hairspray,” and “Legally Blonde.” His next Broadway project with Jerry Mitchell is “Pretty Woman the Musical,” with music and lyrics by Bryan

Adams. It will open on Broadway in August. “As an undergraduate at UTK, Rusty developed and demonstrated an exceptional talent for the musical theatre genre,” said Tom Cervone, CBT Managing Director. “In 1992, he carried this talent and a whole lot of good ole’ fashion grit and determination to New York City and found his place, his home away from home, actually, on Broadway. We couldn’t be more proud to commemorate and celebrate his success right here where it all began, the Clarence Brown Theatre. Thank you, Rusty, congratulations, and welcome home!” The CBT Gala benefits the Clarence Brown Theatre Artists Endowment, a fund that not only brings in professional actors you see on stage, but professional designers, directors, stage managers, and choreographers, like Rusty Mowery, that work behind the scenes with our undergraduate and graduate students, enhancing the training of their artistic career paths in live theatre. Members of the 2018 CBT Gala committee include Margie Nichols (Chair), Susan Farris, Bob Lederer, Maureen Dunn McBride, Whitney Ray-Dawson, Todd Richesin, Sandi Swilley, and Wendy Wortham. Tickets are $200 ($100 tax deductible). To purchase your ticket, visit www.clarencebrowntheatre.com/ galaRSVP. For more information, contact Amanda

Middleton at 865-974-5654 or amanda@utk.edu. With a dual mission to train the next generation of theatre artists and to provide top quality professional theatre, like that of a teaching hospital, the Clarence Brown Theatre at the University of Tennessee Knoxville is one of only 12 academic LORT (League of Resident Theatre) institutions in the nation. Under the leadership of Producing Artistic Director Calvin MacLean and Managing Director Thomas Cervone, the CBT season runs from August through May and features eight productions ranging from musicals to drama.

K

noxville Children’s Theatre will present 14 live performances of the popular coming-of-age story, “Anne of Green Gables.” This beloved tale of how an unwanted orphan makes her way in Avonlea, Nova Scotia, has been adapted for film, television, and the stage. Performances will be May 4-20 at KCT, located at 109 E. Churchwell Avenue in Knoxville. All the tragedies and triumphs that mark Anne’s coming-of-age are here: Her friendship with Diana, her feuds with Gilbert, her adoration of Matthew, the mistaken wine bottle, the cake disaster, the broken leg, and, ultimately, the saving of Green Gables. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s book has sold more than 50 million copies and is read around the world in more than 35 languages. The play is performed by 24 talented actors from ages 9-16. Averi Walker, a 13-year-old veteran of more than a dozen KCT plays, plays Anne. Two teens from South Knoxville, Charlotte Stark and Boone Sommers, play the Cuthberts, and Bella Patterson and Logan Bell play

Clare Carter, a senior at West High, directs the production, having previously helmed “The Three Musketeers” and “Pride and Prejudice” at the KCT. Kathryn Payne, a senior at Central High, is the stage manager. Senior Noah Seaman will be the play’s costume designer, and Max Harper, a student at Bearden Middle, will design the lighting. ne of the best concerts East Tennesseans will ever see is coming to the Tennessee Theatre beginning at 7:30 pm (not the normal 8 pm start time). There’ll be a quiz at the end of this article. Because Chicago is coming to Knoxville, I was afforded the opportunity to chat with one of the band’s co-founders, Jimmy Pankow. While chit-chatting before getting down to talking about the upcoming show, I was delighted to learn that Jimmy is a fellow Tennessean by way of the Nashville area. He shared how that came about. “I relocated the family here almost eight years ago for a better life and, indeed, we found it,” said Jimmy. “We escaped the L.A. area. It was not doable any longer. My children were approaching high school age, and I did not like the idea of them growing up in a third world country. It was overcrowded and dangerous. I explored options and, actually, Nashville made a lot of sense – not only for a better quality of life, but a simpler life, a more affordable life.” As for what we can expect from the band at the Tennessee Theatre, Jimmy shared: “The band is just better than ever. The band is slamming. People are loving the shows. We’re doing sell-out business. We’re far from throwing in the towel! “The fact is, people not only love this music, they keep wanting more. They want to come back, and they want to re-live the

The Quebe Sisters at the Clayton Center for the Arts May 12

W

hen the Quebe Sisters from Texas take a stage, and the triple-threat fiddle champions start playing and singing in multi-part close harmony, audiences are usually transfixed, then blown away. It’s partly because the trio’s vocal and instrumental performances are authentic all-Americana, all the time, respectful of the artists that inspired them the most. And whether the Quebes (rhymes with “maybe”) are decked out in denims and boots or fashionably dressed to the nines in makeup, skirts, and heels, the freshfaced, clean-cut sisters, all in their 20s, look as good as they sound. Not surprisingly, the Quebe Sisters win standing ovations at just about every show. It’s been that way since 2000, when they started fiddling

together as pre-teens. The sisters’ past is as colorful and eventful as their future is bright. Growing up in Burleson, a southern suburb of Fort Worth, Hulda, Sophia, and Grace were ages 7, 10, and 12 in 1998 when they attended their first local fiddle competition in nearby Denton and decided fiddling was what they wanted to do. The girls earned solo

and group accolades early on, winning state and national championships in their respective age groups in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002. The Quebes’ evolution from the whiz-kid Western swing fiddlers they were back then to the smokin’-hot young adult Americana band they are today is a remarkable story, by any measure. Along with headlining their own shows to ever-growing audiences, they’ve shared stages with American music legends like Willie Nelson, George Strait, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder, Ray Price, Connie Smith, Marty Stuart, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers, Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, Riders in the Sky, and many others. Today, after more than a decade of traveling the U.S. and the world and recording three

acclaimed albums, Grace, Sophia, and Hulda Quebe are pros in a variety of genres and count many famous musicians among their biggest boosters. The Quebes’ unbridled passion for American music, along with their talent, skills, and a lot of hard work, have taken them far beyond their wildest early aspirations. “One thing is for sure, you don’t see a group like The Quebe Sisters come along every day,” famed Opry announcer Eddie Stubbs told listeners on his own show on Nashville’s WSM. “Give them your undivided attention, and if you’re not already, you, too, will become a fan.” The Quebe Sisters will be at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville on May 12 at 7:30 pm. Tickets cost $18-32. For more information, visit www.claytonartscenter.com.

Kids’ Closets:

Go from Toddler to Teen

K

eeping ourselves organized is hard enough for most of us, but helping our children stay organized can seem almost impossible at times! And a child’s closet is an essential tool in helping minimize a messy room. A kid’s closet can be one of the more difficult spaces to design in your home and one of the most important. To grow from a toddler to a six-foot teenage boy, a closet design should provide flexible space to meet your child’s needs today while thinking about their future. Tailored Living of Knoxville, East Tennessee’s whole-home organization experts, suggests these tips and ideas when thinking about creating a new closet for a child:

Get Your Child’s Input Slide-out baskets and adjustable rods are key elements for a closet designed to change with a child’s needs

If they’re old enough, ask for your child’s opinion when designing a closet. When kids help with the organization, they feel a part of the solution versus being told what to do. Kids are more likely to maintain a clean closet if they help create it.

Pull-Out Baskets Sturdy, wire baskets make it easy for a child to see their toys or older children to quickly identify clothing items. They can also be used for a hamper to toss dirty clothes into.

Adjustable Rods and Shelves If kids can’t easily reach hangers, shelves, and bins, they’re not going to put things away. For younger children, hang adjustable rods at lower, child-friendly levels. As a child grows, those rods are adjusted to accommodate bigger clothing items. Shelves can also be added and adjusted.

Color-Coded Hangers For younger children, establish which color hangers will be used for different types of clothes. Separate clothes into categories of school, play, and dress.

Hooks Placed at a child’s eye level, or within their reach along the inside walls of the closet, hooks keep accessories such as caps, purses, and necklaces organized and easy to reach. Or hang the next day’s outfit to simplify the morning routine.

Slide-Out Racks Belts, scarves, and other everyday clothing items are hung on racks that slide in and out from the side of panels, allowing easy access and more space in the closet.

Seasonal Clothing Since most children’s closets are smaller in size, store hand-me-down and seasonal clothing in clear plastic bins in the back of the closet or on a shelf. Label the bin with a description and size of the contents. A Tailored Living custom closet organization system is the perfect solution for today and tomorrow by accommodating all the stages your child will go through. A custom-designed system allows you to keep pace as needs change without having to completely remodel the closet every few years. Make a few adjustments, add some new accessories, and the closet will be ready for the next stage! Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

New Design Trends at Amish Excellence By Angie Carroll, Owner of Amish Excellence

W

hile you may not think of Amish hand-crafted furniture as “trendy,” the fact is that Amish made furniture has actually led the furniture marketplace in a variety of important ways. Amish craftsmen have always embraced the responsible use and sustainability of our nation’s natural resources. By embracing timeless designs and superior craftsmanship, Amish furniture has earned a reputation for its heirloom quality that is made to last many generations. Time and time again our customers tell us they prefer to invest in quality furnishings that their family will not only enjoy, but they appreciate that it is sustainable and has little VOC or off-gassing. The imported furniture (wood, fabrics, finishes) is constructed of or treated with a variety of chemicals that emit toxins in the home for long periods of time. Families who share our environmental concerns and/or allergy sensitivities find great value in choosing American hardwoods that

are not chemically treated and finishes are low VOC. This year you will discover a variety of dramatic fabric colors, particularly in our dining and bedroom suites, in addition to a growing palette of all-natural wood stain colors that accentuate the rich grain of our all U.S. hardwood constructed furniture. Although traditional by nature, look for intricate wood inlay designs, contemporary influenced table and chair legs and wooden accents, and “live” edges on dining and accent tables. The upholstered furniture availability comes as a surprise to many. We now have a wide variety of sofas, loveseats, sectional sofas, chairs, and upholstered headboards. All are made with solid hardwood (maple) frames, 8-way handtied springs, and high-density foam. Add splashes of color with performance fabrics and superior quality leather. Rustic wood is growing in popularity, as is the use of reclaimed barn wood. The beauty of the original saw marks, nail holes, variation in wood tone and patina found only in aged and reclaimed woods has been in high demand in recent months. Here’s something else that we think you will enjoy about Amish Excellence. Every piece of furniture we sell is custom made. That means that your new furniture fits your interior design plans rather than being “forced” or “made to work.” What is even more surprising is that all of our custom-made furniture is competitively priced and is of higher quality than the assembly line furniture found online or in big box stores. I invite you to visit our showroom often, as new pieces are arriving every week. In fact, you might find that our newly expanded showroom is more of a discovery center, where you will realize there are virtually unlimited design possibilities for the highest quality furniture available anywhere. Everything is produced one piece at a time by our Amish craftsmen, who exhibit a level of skill and pride that you might have thought no longer existed. The Amish people, whether in their craft or home life, continue to be peaceful caretakers of the Earth by replanting, repurposing, and restoring. We look forward to your visit soon. he Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, Lenoir City hosted the “Painting with a Purpose” painting party with family and friends. Sparkling cider and hors d’oeuvres were served as the artists worked on their pieces. Teresa Karimian, owner of Unique Technique Painting, donated her time and talents to the cause, assisting guests with their creations and exploring the therapeutic benefits of art. The canvases, illustrated by the minds of those with Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions, will be on display during the Art for Alzheimer’s Auction on April 17 at the memory care community, located at 155 Morning Pointe Drive. The associates, families, and local volunteers are credited with pulling the gallery together for the seniors, who are the true stars of the show. Every week the residents will engage in creative self-expression as they prepare work to be featured. Funds raised from the auction will benefit the upcoming Alzheimer’s Tennessee walk in Knoxville. “Our volunteers have been very drawn to what we do here at the Lantern, and they are happy to give their time to seeing this project come to light,” said Maggie Devaney, Lantern Program Director. “We find so much joy from seeing our residents exercise their creativity with colors on the canvas.”

Discover a Fresh Approach to Today’s Residential Real Estate Marketplace

I

n today’s real estate marketplace, most buyers and sellers share a generic view of the agents that act on their behalf. You sign an agreement, the “for sale” sign goes up, ads go online and in print, buyers make inquiries, offers are made, contracts are signed, and a closing occurs. But decisions to buy and sell real estate are rarely that simple and often require the combined skills of a trusted real estate professional that can also act in an advisory role. Local entrepreneur and Exit Real Estate Associate Broker, Jesse Boling, first began his self-employment career at a very early age in his parent’s business and later launched two successful businesses, CH Interiors & Gifts in 2013 and Knox Graphics & Design in 2017. Jesse’s success in retail came about largely from his unique ability to build winning teams of associates and to differentiate his companies from his competition. Success also resulted from developing lasting relationships, comprehensive marketing strategies, and by developing all of the necessary skills needed to succeed at every new venture. Today, as an Associate Broker at Exit Real Estate Professionals Network, Jesse has combined his years of successful entrepreneurship, along with Exit Realty’s commitment to provide the highest level of professionalism and training, offering each of their clients an uncommon level of expertise when buying and selling a home in today’s fast-paced and evolving real estate marketplace. We hope you will enjoy this recent interview with Jesse. MV: How have your years of experience as an entrepreneur and business owner prepared you for today’s residential real estate marketplace? Jesse: Success in any worthwhile endeavor involves planning. Before launching any new business, every aspect of that new venture must be thoroughly examined, considered, and planned for. Comprehensive analysis and plans must then be developed. But, even more importantly, you need to consider the human component for every transaction, never forgetting that there are family members emotionally invested in every home that is bought or sold.

MV: What is the most important characteristic or skill required to succeed in residential real estate? Jesse: While there are a variety of skills required for success, the most important skill is the ability to listen to your clients. Without the ability to listen, all of your other skills are of little value. MV: You had multiple real estate companies to select from. What made you choose Exit Real Estate Professionals Network? Jesse: That’s simple. It was their comprehensive approach and commitment to provide a level of client service that is uncommon in today’s marketplace. It was the same commitment I made to each of my customers in my retail businesses that was required to achieve success; a commitment to provide a level of service that most people thought no longer existed today. MV: How would you describe a typical “buyer’s” experience? Jesse: As I stated earlier, it begins with listening. What are the buyer’s expectations? What are their priorities (schools, shopping, proximity to work, emergency services, churches)? We need to determine budget and pursue mortgage pre-approval. These are just a few of the requirements we need to consider, allowing us to transform ourselves from a real estate professional to a trusted advisor and ally. MV: How would you describe a typical “seller’s” experience? Jesse: Well, listening still is my number one priority. We need to establish a current market price for the seller’s home, as well as a realistic timeframe for the sale to take place. There are also a large number of recommendations we might make to the seller to enhance the probability for success at the highest possible price. This is also where our team goes to work to create a comprehensive marketing plan designed to achieve a successful outcome. MV: How important is communication in the buying and selling process? Jesse: Next to listening, communication is perhaps the most often neglected component in the real estate experience. Buyers and sellers deserve to be in the loop to whichever degree they wish

to be included. Also, with all of the communication tools available today, there’s really no excuse not to keep buyers and sellers informed. Regardless, it’s the number one complaint we hear from buyers and sellers today. MV: If a reader has an interest in buying, selling, or perhaps purchasing an income property, what is the best way for them to reach you? Jesse: Those interested in reaching me can call or text me at 865-335-7270 or email me at j.boling865@gmail.com. MV: In closing, is there anything you would like to add? Jesse: I would first like to thank the

many thousands of people that have helped us to succeed in business, in addition to the countless friendships that have occurred as a result. I would also like to ask you for the opportunity to earn your trust as an advisor and real estate professional on any residential real estate opportunity that you may become part of in the future. Success in Residential Real Estate Begins with a Comprehensive Marketing Plan

H

aving been active in the Tellico Village, Rarity Bay, and Tellico Lake area residential real estate marketplace since 2006, most area residents are familiar with my efforts both as a realtor and my marketing support efforts on behalf of other realtors in this same marketing area. While the marketing of residential real estate continues to evolve, one important characteristic that remains unchanged is that nothing can replace a well-thought out, comprehensive, and carefully implemented marketing strategy. During my time in the real estate marketplace, I discovered that the most successful realtors were also the very best marketers. As a result, I recently re-launched my real estate career with Woody Creek Realty, where I

will concentrate my efforts on behalf of both buyers in sellers in Tellico area communities. What I will be offering sellers in particular is truly unique. I will be offering every seller a comprehensive marketing analysis in which the seller is an active participant. I will personally prepare all marketing materials rather than sub-contract them to a third party. My skills include: »» Professional Real Estate Photographer »» FAA Licensed Drone Pilot (certificate # 3985893) »» Member of the Knoxville Association of Realtors since 2006 »» GRI Designation Since 2006, I have personally photographed and developed the digital and print marketing materials for hundreds

of area homes and have developed a unique ability to identify and market each home’s most unique and positive characteristics to enhance your potential for more showings and a successful sales outcome. I offer each seller a total turn-key experience, where I personally work hand-in-hand with my clients and where a high value is placed on communication. Why not put my 10+ years of residential real estate marketing and sales to work for you? The Arts Center’s 2017-18 House Blend Concert Series Closes with September Song on May 11

T

he Athens Area Council for the Arts is pleased to bring back “September Song” featuring beloved local musicians on Friday, May 11, at 7:30 at The Arts Center in Athens. Join Lindsey and Andrew Kimball and their band, September Song, in the Sue E. Trotter Theater for an evening of new and well-loved favorites featuring plenty of tight three-part harmony that concert-goers have come to expect from the group. The band includes local musicians Joe Littleton, Kyle Littleton, and Nathan Crisp, as well as Jennifer Nunley and Liz Schreck. The band also welcomes special guest Cody Housley. “Members of September Song have served as our house band, backing up many local performers in our House Blend Concert Series events and special events such as ‘Jazzy Christmas’ and ‘Sisters,’” said Lauren Shepherd, AACA Executive Director. “The band is a familiar presence on our stage, but it’s been several years since they headlined a concert of their own in the Black Box, so we slated them as our

House Blend closer as a way to say thanks for their unwavering support of our local performances.” The House Blend Concert Series gives stand-out local talent the opportunity to perform in a professional setting and allows the audience to experience an intimate concert in a world-class atmosphere. “Evening with the Stars,” slated for August 4, is an annual event where ideas are born and local talent is discovered. For instance, the band now known as September Song first played together during “Stars” 2010. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and include light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. Tickets are available at www.athensartscouncil.org or The Arts Center, located at 320 North White Street in Athens. Tickets may be purchased over the phone with a credit card by calling 423745-8781. Seating is general admission, and doors open at 7 pm. AACA member seating is at 6:50 pm. The box office opens one hour before show time.

May in the Garden

8B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, May, 2018

C

an we all just send up a prayer that May will actually feel like spring? April was ridiculous! We always have temperature fluctuations, but rarely have I seen a month where you could go from shorts and t-shirt one day to a parka the next, and then back to shorts again. Those temperature swings were hard on us and hard on the plants. Nevertheless, many of our plants (especially Dogwoods and Azaleas) put on quite the show. Nature is a pretty resilient thing. Some plants did take quite a beating during the winter, so let’s talk about those first. Loropetalums that were planted within the last year were hit very hard. Every plant that I have checked, however, is showing new leaf buds. They may not have a single leaf left, but if the branches are flexible and you see swollen leaf buds, leave them alone. They will come back and be stronger than a new plant. Hydrangeas were also hit hard. Many of them were showing a lot of new growth, and then the temperature dropped and killed it. The good news is that most will recover. The bad news is that your old growth blooms no longer exist. If it is a variety that blooms on old and new wood, you will get some blooms. If it is a variety that blooms on old wood, you will have a green bush. Some of our Hostas also look pretty sad. What you need to do depends on the degree of damage. If the entire plant looks terrible, you can cut it down. Secondary leaves will emerge, but it will be smaller than usual. If just a few leaves look bad, clip those off. Don’t leave mushy leaves in place, because it will set up the plant for insect and disease issues. The last victim I am going to talk about is evergreen shrubs that had put out new growth. Much of that growth was damaged and has turned or will turn brown. You can just lightly prune that off later on this month after the plants have recovered.

Here is the main thing I want you to remember about plants that are stressed from cold damage or drought or anything else: Leave them alone! Our instinct is to try to “help” them by fertilizing and pruning them. This just adds additional stress. Give them a few weeks to recover and then remove damaged foliage and add an organic fertilizer if it makes you feel better. Applying a strong synthetic fertilize may just push it over the edge. Now let’s move on to planting. You can plant just about anything now except cool season veggies. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and warm season vegetables like to be planted in May, because the soil temperature has warmed and the air temperature is more stable. Those of you who have been chomping at the bit since March are free to play in the dirt! Are you planting vegetables this year? Remember that all veggies need at least six hours of sun. If you don’t have enough sunny space for a full-sized garden, try raised beds or even containers. Most herbs and vegetables will do well in either of those. Do your research, however. A few plants do not play well together. Also remember that some tomatoes can get very large, so save yourself the trouble of flimsy tomato cages and buy a sturdy one or make one from fencing. Those of you who planted earlier have now reached the maintenance stage. This means you need to check your plants daily for water, insects, and fungal problems. It is much easier to treat these problems if you find them early. Good hygiene will prevent many fungal problems, so remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves. If insects have invaded, make sure that it is a problem insect before you start spraying. Some insects are beneficial. For example, one

ladybug can clean all the aphids off your tomato plant in a single day! If it is a problem insect, always start with the least toxic product first. Usually this is an insecticidal soap. You also need to start fertilizing container gardens and annuals now. This is especially true of flowers that bloom prolifically. They tend to suck all the nutrients out of the soil very quickly. Don’t forget our birds and our pollinators! I encourage all of you to plant at least one plant in your yard that is friendly to these creatures. We have lists here, or check online for ideas. If you have bird feeders, please make sure they are clean and full. There are lots of babies, so those bird parents are busy and hungry! I will also remind you that we get several trucks every week this time of year. Stop by often to see what is new. Now go play in the dirt! f your home is for sale, you probably know that the first impression you give to potential buyers is priceless. To get top dollar, your home must sparkle inside and out. In particular, bathrooms and kitchens must be immaculate. Exterior hardscapes (pool decks, walkways, etc.) need to look like the backdrop for future memories, and the siding to your home needs to look like it has 20 more years of service before maintenance is needed. Even if your home is in decent shape and repair, going the extra mile to make your home sparkle will boost your sale price and attract more buyers. forget. Surface Doc specializes in getting sellers top dollar for their property. Owners John and Christina Fitzwilliam and their crew can deep clean almost any surface, inside and out. One particular client, Kimberly Thomas, was especially thankful for the job Surface Doc did in her previous home. “Our home was for sale for 16 months, with little interest from buyers,” said Thomas. “Once we hired Surface Doc to come in and deep clean, we sold our property in just a few weeks.” What makes Surface Doc unique is their ability to clean just about any hard surface or carpet, so the homeowners don’t need to call a specialist for each area. Surface Doc offers cleaning and sealing of all tiled surfaces in the home, carpet, cleaning and sealing of all exterior hardscapes and concrete, as well as soft washing siding and roofs. “John and his crew cleaned my carpet, linoleum, walkways, bathrooms, kitchen, and oil stains in the driveway,” said Thomas. “I thought my carpet was fairly clean, although I knew there were some problem stains. I was very surprised to see how dirty it really was and the difference a restoration cleaning made. And my back patio and walkways literally glowed white after they were cleaned.” Thomas credits Surface Doc for the quick sale of her home and was thrilled with the results. What makes Surface Doc different from their competition begins with the tools they use. Instead of a traditional carpet shampoo that simply drives dirt and bacteria into the carpet, Surface Doc has an entirely different process that guarantees that the entire carpet structure is both cleaned and sanitized. They use eco-friendly emulsifiers, purified steam, and powerful suction. In addition to their tools, equipment, and four-step restoration process is the attention to detail that John Fitzwilliam personally provides, and the results are amazing every time. his week’s Dogs of the Week at the Monroe County Animal Shelter are Grizzly and Luna. Grizzly is a 1+ year old cur/mountain mix. He has a beautiful brown coat with black and white patches. Grizzly came to us because he did not get along with his family’s new smaller dog. He loves to take walks and enjoys back rubs. He would love to live with an active family who has kids. He might seem shy when you first meet him, but this loveable pup will warm your heart. He may just be the family member you’ve been looking for. We would also like to introduce you to Luna, a purebred Doberman Retriever currently in residence. Luna was surrendered by her owners when they found she could outwit their invisible fence. Since physical fencing was not a possibility for them, Luna was not safe in their care so they made the hard choice to re-home her. She’s a little over two years old, is brilliant, protective, and great with children. The shelter staff absolutely loves this sweet girl and wants the very best home for her with a secure fenced yard. Stop by the shelter and meet Luna – she could be the one! Would you be interested in adopting a pet? You can visit the shelter’s website at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals. org to pick a furry partner. Perhaps you could foster an animal? Fostering helps free up space at the shelter but also helps develop social skills in the animal, making it easier for him to be adopted. Please call the shelter at 423-442-1015 or visit our website for more information. Have you ever thought of adopting an older

pet? There are many sizable advantages to owning a more mature animal: » Older animals with a history of living within a family may settle in more quickly than a puppy or kitten. » Adult animals won’t have teething issues and will come into your life less likely to cause destruction. Many are already house-trained and have already mastered basic commands. » It may be easier to bond with older animals due to their typically calmer dispositions, their familiarity with home environments, and their experience living with other animals. » Adult animals require less supervision than puppies or kittens, who sometimes can’t distinguish between safe situations and dangerous ones and may not know – or care – what “no” means. » Whereas the personalities of puppies and kittens change as they grow up, the personalities of adult animals are fully-formed, which makes them more predictable. That doesn’t mean adult animals can’t learn – in fact, they can be amazingly adaptive. The best way to find a “perfect pet” is by checking preconceived notions at the shelter door, asking lots of questions, and letting their hearts guide them. A sweet dog or cat’s life may depend on it. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart). It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11-4:30 and Saturday from 11-2. It is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Please call 423-442-1015 during working hours.

ere she is. One-year-old Flaksey in the prime of her life. She’s has a sweet personality, is easy going, and the kind of cat that should be in popular demand for humans seeking a new feline companion. However, each day thousands of cats like Flaksey are handed a death sentence. You see, Flaksey tested positive for FIV (feline-immunodeficiency-virus). According to the FIV Cat Rescue Organization, many shelters (both “kill” and “no-kill”) routinely euthanize all cats who test positive for FIV antibodies. Why? Because one time it was thought that FIV positive cats were highly infectious and the disease spread rapidly. Recent findings show that FIV is a slow Myths about FIV doom thousands of cats acting virus. In fact, it acts so slowly that most cats like Flaksey to a death sentence. Since that test FIV positive die of old age, not from the the writing of this article Flaksey has virus. found a forever home, where she will live If one sees a parallel between HIV in humans a long and happy life. and FIV in cats, there is. At one time, both diseases were thought to be a death sentence to their victims. Unfortunately, many still believe that is the case for FIV. This misconception has another lethal and bizarre consequence. That consequence is felt by cats that are vaccinated for FIV. According to FIV Cat Rescue Organization, cats who have been vaccinated AGAINST FIV by loving owners will test positive FOR FIV antibodies! This leads to false readings all their lives. So if they are ever separated from their owners, they are literally “marked for death.” An act of love becomes a death warrant. This could have been the fate of Flaksey. Instead, she is in safe hands thanks to a group named Second Chance Pals that takes cats and dogs that have difficulty being adopted and finds foster or forever homes for them. Right now Flaksey is in her new temporary environment, but she does like to be picked up and held. She is a BIG girl at about 13 pounds. She will be spayed, is up to date on vaccinations, and will be Microchipped and ready for adoption. Another myth about FIV is how rapidly it can spread. Best Fiends the national animal welfare society reports that the most common route of FIV infection is a deep bite wound from an FIV-positive cat to another cat. It can also be transmitted via blood, in utero, and from the milk of an infected mother cat. It is very rare for cats to get FIV just from being around infected cats, sharing food bowls, or from a person touching an FIV-positive cat and then touching an FIV-negative cat. Many FIV-positive cats and FIV-negative cats live together in the same home for years without spreading the virus to the non-infected cats. There are no specific signs of FIV infection. FIV-positive cats have a weaker immune system, so they are more prone to getting infections, such as upper respiratory infections, ringworm, and dental disease. Other than that, FIV-positive cats tend to live normal lives in a stress-free environment and have a normal length of life. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans. If the risk of infection is low, can FIV-negative and FIV-positive cats live together? Yes, if the cats get along and do not fight. The risk of an FIV-positive cat spreading the virus to an FIV-negative cat can be minimized by putting both cats in separate rooms until you are confident that they will not fight with each other. Spaying or neutering your pets will also reduce any risk. FIV-positive cats should be strictly INDOOR to minimize contact with outdoor cats that may lead to fighting and can spread the infection. Can FIV-positive cats have a good and long life? Yes, FIV-positive cats can live normal lives, both in quality and duration. They just need to be monitored for infections and dental issues. But if they’re well cared for, they can be healthy, happy, wonderful pets. Feed a good, healthy diet (not raw due to immunity issues with uncooked meat and eggs), an immunity boosting supplement, and check-ups twice per year at the vet. If you are interested in adopting Flaksey or a cat or kitten, contact the Monroe County Animal Shelter. It is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart). Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11-4:30 and Saturday from 11-2. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. This article was written by the Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA) Cat Team to educate the public about FIV. Please visit our website if you are interested in becoming a volunteer, learning more about, or donating to MCFA. Note: Since this story was written, Flaksey was adopted by a human who didn’t believe the FIV myths and saw Flaksey for what she is: An adorable, lovable cat.

They treated us like we were family

“W

e approached Keener Homes to build our home because of their excellent reputation for building quality, long-lasting homes. Even though this was the second time we had built, Kit Keener helped us by giving us great suggestions to make our house a home here in Tennessee. The result was an awesome home that we love. One thing we liked was their approach to the customer; they treated us like we were family, trying to make sure we got the best within our budget. Any concerns we had were dealt with quickly and professionally by their staff, so we found the experience so much easier this time versus the first time we had built. Therefore, we recommend Keener Homes to people who want to build a quality home.” - Phil & Lynn Treers www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759 218 Lakeside Plaza, Loudon, TN 37774

We Don’t Have to Be Fat, Unhealthy, and Self-Conscious

“S

omeone once told me that about managing weight and eating well,” said 52-year-old Kevin Waters, a husband, dad, and entrepreneur. “You pay for it now with your money to eat well and exercise or you will pay in medical bills and brokenness in the future. Your choice.” Kevin’s 6’3” height allowed him to hide his weight, which tended to range between 210 and 225 pounds. But at an annual physical, he was surprised to learn that his weight had increased to 232 pounds. “The doctor also informed me that my blood levels were elevated, which increased my risk for Type II diabetes,” he said. In January 2017, Kevin did what he had done so often in the past: Starve himself and also eat better. “It worked initially… it always does,” said Kevin. “I was down to 219 pounds and feeling that it was good enough to go back to the bad habits of snacking at night and not exercising.” By April, Kevin’s weight began to climb again. By October, his weight was back at 228, and he was feeling bad. Bad habits, 60-hour work weeks, and a sedentary lifestyle were all undermining Kevin’s goal of enjoying a fuller and healthier life. It was time to act! Kevin and his wife scheduled an initial assessment and complimentary workout with Andrew Henderson, trainer at Fitness Together. “We were sore for days!” said Kevin. “But something clicked. I discovered the importance of accountability. There was something about the physical environment, the encouragement, the fact that it was on my calendar.” Today Kevin works out two to three times a week with Mac Bowers, a certified Fitness Together trainer. Kevin is down to 205 and continuing to drop, hoping to hit the 190s for the first time since the late 1990s. He feels stronger than he was at 35, with more muscle mass and physical strength. And his body fat percentage has fallen from 26% to 19%. Our longevity and quality of life are directly tied to our health. Everyone has a story to share. But whether it’s one of success or not will be determined by the decisions we make in our life. Why not let the professionals at Fitness Together help you rediscover a healthier, happier lifestyle? Call today to schedule your free evaluation and complimentary workout.

Put Your Garage in Gear

A

May, 2018, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 11B

re you embarrassed to leave your garage door open very long? Have your cars been displaced from their rightful home to make room for more

clutter? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. Of U.S. homes that have two-car garages, 35% can’t park their cars in the garage because of the junk! Garages often become a dumping ground for whatever doesn’t fit into the house. So let’s cut the clutter and talk about finally getting your garage organized this spring! Plan the Space

How are you going to use your garage? If there’s enough space, homeowners are now using the garage for “flex space.” Besides parking cars, people utilize the garage for multiple purposes, workshops or hobby area, exercise space, or a man cave. People are planning their garage so it looks and works like a part of the house, rather than an addition. Eliminate the Waste Go through everything in your garage. Place items into three piles on tarps on your driveway: Keep, donate, or toss. Toss or donate outgrown toys, things that are broken beyond repair, outdated chemicals or paint, which may need special disposal, and anything you haven’t used in two years. If you need to store items for a couple of nights, renting a trailer is

the least expensive way to store something short term. Maximize the Space When putting items back into the garage, put similar items near each other, making it easier to find things. For example, all the sporting equipment goes in one area and your everyday tools in another. Things you use the most, like bikes or the lawnmower, place close to the garage door. Put seasonal items that you use once a year in hardto-reach places. The most important clutter-busting tip is to keep items off the floor! You’ll free up more room for your car. PreCabinets, constructed for use in the garage, provide valuable space to store anything from holiday decorations to yard tools

mierGarage can help maximize wall and ceiling space by designing and installing cabinets and an organizational system, along with a durable, easy-to-clean floor that stands up to the heat and friction of tires. Let PremierGarage help you get your garage in gear by taking it from chaos to clutter free! PremierGarage Powered by Tailored Living 865-947-8686 www.PremierGarage.com/Knoxville
