lanning a vacation? Look to Duluth for amazing events and activities not only this summer but year-round. With such a wide variety of amazing events, you’ll want to book your stay as soon as possible. Check out your options at www.visitduluth.com/lodging.

By Land, Air, and Water Duluth offers great natural beauty and outdoor experiences. One of the bestknown is the 43rd annual Grandma’s Marathon June 22, a 26.2-mile race along the scenic North Shore. Other races include the William A. Irvin 5K and the Whipper Snapper Races for kids 14 and under on June 21, then the Garry Bjorklund Half Marathon on June 22. For automobile enthusiasts, visit Spirit Valley Days July 30-31, hosting the Northland’s largest classic car show. Also included in the celebration is a canoe and kayak tour of the St. Louis River, the largest freshwater estuary in North America, and the headwaters of the Great Lakes. Plan your trip around the exciting Duluth Air Show July 20-21. Minnesota’s

largest air show features the U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Since Duluth is best known for its proximity to Lake Superior, there are two must-see events celebrating all things nautical: Cheer on the Duluth Rowing Club at the spectacular Duluth International Regatta, a 29-event rowing regatta held on a 2,000-meter course on July 13. But the most famous event this summer is the thrilling Festival of Sail August 11-13. When these sailing vessels visit Duluth, it is a rare chance to see the grandest ships of yore. Historic ships arrive in Duluth for a three-day visit, featuring tours and fun for the entire family! The World’s Largest Rubber Duck will visit the harbor, making an incredible photo backdrop for the ships. This event is extremely popular, so you

will want to book your lodging now if you plan to stay in Duluth that week.

Cultural Events For film aficionados, the Duluth Superior Film Festival (DSFF) May 29-31 presents an imaginative, diverse lineup of international, independent, and regional films. DSFF hosts visiting filmmakers, plus events and parties. Catch the Art in Bayfront Park Art continued on page 2A ...

Fair August 17-18 for the opportunity to purchase gallery-quality artwork, including jewelry, paintings, photography, ceramics, and more from around 180 artists. You can even take an art class during a fun-filled weekend of art appreciation.

Fun, Music, and Food Duluth provides an amazing array of musical talent year-round but especially during the summer months. Plan your visit around these exciting artists and festivals for a truly memorable vacation. National acts visiting Duluth’s Bayfront Festival Park this summer alone include Trampled by Turtles on July 6, Steve Miller Band on July 14, and O.A.R. on August 1. Concerts and festivals provide a great opportunity to enjoy Duluth. The annual Duluth Dylan Fest May 1826 celebrates iconic artist Bob Dylan, who was born in Duluth in 1941. The week-long festival includes an art show, poetry reading, concerts, lectures by Dylanologists, and a Singer-Songwriter Contest. The Concert on the Pier at Glensheen is held July 18 at the historic 20,000-squarefoot mansion. Concertgoers can bike, boat, or walk to the concert since parking is limited. The best seats in the house are on Lake Superior. Concertgoers can purchase a Glensheen tour on concert evenings. Check out the 14th annual Bayfront Reggae and World Music Festival July 20, showcasing international

veterans. For the tastiest food and drink in Duluth, visit the Taste of Duluth Festival July 14 or the All Pints North Summer Brew Fest July 27, both at Bayfront Festival Park. Taste of Duluth is a free event celebrating the cultural heritage of the area, offering great food, crafts, and music. The All Pints North Summer Brew Fest presents craft beer from Minnesota breweries and brewpubs of the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild. Meet brewers and enjoy craft beers, food, live music, and more. Duluth has so much for visitors to enjoy all summer and all year. Plan your best Duluth vacation at www. VisitDuluth.com.

Supporting Small Business and the Challenges They Face

performers, plus ethnic foods and artisans. Or visit August 9-11 for the 31st annual Bayfront Blues Festival, when 20,000 fans are treated to more than 30 acts at Bayfront Festival Park, highlighting the best artists in the blues s most of us know, it is very and blues/rock genres. If rock, country, and dance music important to support small are more your thing, see The Tribute Fest August 22-24, businesses in our communities. featuring many fun tribute shows. Enjoy the best tribute In Athens, like a lot of cities our size, bands in the country while raising funds for homeless small business is the backbone our town. Of the close to 500 members of our chamber, 80% are small businesses. So what are the challenges facing these companies today? Health Care One of the most challenging aspects of running a small business comes from managing health care for your employees. Without a doubt, your workers’ health is important, but the increased healthcare Rob costs make finances difficult to manage. Preston Government Regulations Each year it seems like the government’s collar around owners’ necks becomes tighter. One of those regulations deals with the environment. The Clean Air Act of 1990 forces you to remove air pollutants and your vehicles’ contribution to smog, gas, and other chemicals that crush the ozone layer. Federal Income Taxes Does it feel like each year federal income tax rates skyrocket? It’s unbelievable. Under current U.S. law, the corporate tax rate is currently 15% on the first $50,000 of taxable income. Expect 25% tax rate on the next $25,000, and a whopping 35% tax on income over $10 million. The Economy Not even Wall Street stockbrokers – or so-called “masters of the universe” – truly know how the economy is going to pan out. Fortunately, a SBA 504 loan can help you if you plan on purchasing commercial property or major equipment. Cash Flow From online invoice software to better budgeting systems and effective cash flow management, this challenge can be overcome. However, virtually every small business owner has cash flow problems. One simple tip is to keep strict track of your money, where it’s coming from, and where it’s going. Hiring New Employees Across the nation, many small businesses face employee hiring troubles. The cost (equipment, benefits, taxes, bonuses, etc.) of hiring new employees, unfortunately, keeps rising. All those hurdles come into play before outlining the position’s salary. Small businesses face a lot of challenges. As the Chamber of Commerce, one of our goals is to help these businesses succeed in a big way. For more information about our chamber, visit www.athenschamber.org or come by our office in downtown Athens.

May Highlights From the Publisher

I

have been blessed to have three great women role models in my life as I was growing up. My mother, grandmother, and aunt were all instrumental in shaping my character and my outlook on life, which has resulted in the person I am today. My mom taught me how a mother’s love is so important in a child’s development. Mom was devoted to her two daughters, and she unselfishly gave her all for them. I grew up in the ’50s when few women worked outside the home, but my mom (and dad) wanted a home in a nice suburb where their kids could grow up in a safe neighborhood. So my mom worked to help save for the down payment, but she was always there for us for all the important times in our life, and for that unselfish love, I am forever grateful. Grandma Emily, the only grandmother I knew, became a widow shortly after I was born, and her grandkids were the light of her life. But grandma was not one to sit idly. She kept busy with social events, club activities, and volunteering, as well as cooking wonderful meals for us when my mom was at work. Amish Elegance Exceptional Quality, Reasonably Priced, Hand-crafted by the Amish By Angie Carroll, Owner of Amish Elegance

L

et me begin by thanking all of you who participated in our April 29th Grand Re-opening celebrating the launch of Amish Elegance, formerly Amish Excellence. It was our pleasure to host local radio and TV personality, Hallerin Hilton Hill, during the live broadcast of his popular afternoon radio broadcast on Knoxville’s own Newstalk 98.7 WOKI. Also, we enjoyed having Dawn Steimer, Contractor with Master Remodelers and host of the popular radio broadcast Around the House with Dawn Steimer, broadcast from the showroom Saturday morning, March 30th. We particularly enjoyed the opportunity to share our Amish Elegance vision for the future with the WOKI radio listening audience and those in attendance. Amish Elegance’s origin first began with our 1,900 square foot showroom, which we opened on April 1, 2016. Not surprisingly, as our understanding and appreciation of the Amish furniture marketplace grew, and in response to the evolving needs of our rapidly growing customer base, we evolved as well. We expanded our existing retail showroom to 4,200 square feet, allowing us to display many new lines of Amish furnishings in furniture styles beyond the traditional Mission style of furniture most often associated with Amish furniture. A growing number of customers also began requesting upholstered furniture pieces, so we began displaying an expanded selection of sofas, recliners, chairs, and headboards featuring both performance fabrics and high-quality leather. In recognition of our efforts, we were recognized as the Number One Furniture Store in Farragut in 2017, Favorite Furniture Store in Knoxville in 2018, and Favorite Interior Design in Knoxville in 2018. But our efforts didn’t stop there, as we began offering our customers an extensive selection of outstanding designer-inspired home décor items, including lamps, mirrors, clocks, and more, as well as framed art from some of our most celebrated regional artists, to help you to create those showcase quality living spaces within your home. Although much has changed, one thing that has not changed is our commitment to providing you with the exceptional customer service, quality, and value you deserve, as we continue our tradition of offering you only the finest, solid American hardwood, custom hand-crafted Amish furniture, art, and home décor items that you have been searching for. We invite you to discover the exciting world of quality, hand-crafted Amish furniture, home décor, and art at the all-new Amish Elegance. We also invite you to visit our new website featuring many of our product catalogs and photo galleries. Also, be sure to watch for the special events that we will be hosting throughout the year, where we will be introducing you to many of our very own Amish craftsmen and an expanded selection of new products.

How to Recognize, Respond, and Survive an Active Shooting Incident T 6A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, May, 2019

By James Patterson

he guest speaker at the recent American Legion Post 256 meeting was Randy Allen. Mr. Allen started with the FBI in 1982 working Italian Organized Crime Investigations and became an organized crime instructor at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA. After 9/11, Mr. Allen was moved to terrorism investigations targeting al-Qaida cells inside the United States and spent time in Guantanamo Bay as a member of the U.S. Army’s Joint Detention Task Force. Mr. Allen ended his FBI career in 2017 as the FBI’s chief liaison to the Director of National Intelligence and currently operates Allen Security Consulting. Mr. Allen’s brief to Post 256 included some specifics to protect yourself in the event you are caught in a situation with someone randomly shooting in your area. You only

have three possible reactions: Run, hide, or fight. Running may always be a possibility, so when you enter a room, you should take about 30 seconds to identify your exits. To hide, if a door to a room is locked, the shooter is most likely to continue on and not hesitate with a locked door. If fighting is possible, such as when a shooter must reload, you should fight back if possible. (Note if there is a kitchen nearby, which is an excellent place for you to find a weapon to fight back with.) Mr. Allen says statistics prove “active shooters are cowards.” Mr. Allen informed the group that there are several phone apps that will assist you in calling authorities, dimming and silencing your phone with just the push of a single button. One of these is “SOS.” For more information about the American Legion, visit the Post 256 website at www.tellicolakepost256.org.

H

erbal medicine has been with humanity for thousands of years, and 80% of the world still relies on it for their primary health care. We can’t live without plant-based medicine. We owe a lot to grandmothers for their medicine cabinet of herbs. In allopathic or conventional Western medicine, we find that drug and insurance companies own the health care system. The approach to botanical and nutrition-based therapies is rising once again. Learn about Tonic and Adaptogenic herbs from Chinese, Ayurvedic and Western herbal traditions from the experts. Healing is about self-empowerment. Join us and be empowered. Please arrive at 6:15 so we can begin promptly. A short discussion will follow, time permitting. CHEO programs are open to the public and free for members, with a $10 suggested minimum donation for all guests. CHEO is a non-profit organization supporting wholistic and integrative wellness. CHEO provides the community with many opportunities to discover pathways to well-being. For more information, call Diane Minch at 423-884-6031 or visit www.cheoknox.org. Electric Scooter Pilot Program Launches in Knoxville

T

he City of Knoxville launched an electric scooter pilot program, with the first of two companies – Zagster, which operates the local Pace bike-sharing program, and VeoRide – selected through a competitive process. Both companies are the first electric scooter-sharing companies to provide services following a moratorium that allowed City officials time to review best practices and provide some guidance for a program. “We have taken our time to learn from other cities and feel we have selected two companies that will be flexible and responsive to the needs of Knoxville,” said Mayor Madeline Rogero. Initially the electric scooters will be staged across downtown and major residential and commercial corridors. “We’ve seen amazing success with Pace Bike Share and anticipate scooters to be welcomed by our community with similar excitement,” said Kim Bumpas, President of Visit Knoxville. Per the pilot program rules and City ordinances, electric scooters must be ridden in the streets and are not allowed on sidewalks or greenways. Electric scooters will be treated similar to bicycles ridden on city roads. All details around the operations of the pilot program will be subject to change as the program evolves. The scooters can be ridden on many downtown streets but not currently on Market Square, Cumberland Avenue, or Henley Bridge. The Spin App provides uses with a map

Riders must be 18 years of age or 13-17 with adult permission and supervision. A valid identification indicating age will be required to rent a scooter. Scooters can travel at a maximum of 15 mph, but speeds may be lowered or restricted remotely based on special events. Spin and VeoRide will each provide an initial supply of 250 electric scooters and will adjust supply based on demand. The companies are responsible for moving, recharging, and restaging the scooters throughout the day. Scooters should be parked upright and out of the way of pedestrians or moving vehicles. Users are encouraged to park scooters adjacent to Pace bike stations or public bicycle racks. Individuals who misuse a scooter or park the scooter in a position that impedes pedestrian, bicycle, or motor vehicle traffic may be fined or ticketed. The pilot program is for one year, which can be renewed. The City, or the companies, may end the pilot agreement with 30 days’ notice.

ur salon owner and founder, Faye Whitehead, has truly been “ahead of her time” in the 30-year history of The Village Salon. The meet and greet for cosmetic surgeons is one of the many areas where she has truly proven to be ahead of her time.

Before the turn of the century, The Village Salon was among the very first to introduce non-surgical cosmetic procedures into the salon, and now virtually every highend salon offers injectable cosmetics. Back in the late ’90s, choosing to have Botox or fillers was not exactly

Garage Renovation: Starting from the Floor Up

M

ost of us grew up with a totally utilitarian garage with a coated floor – coated with oil and dirt. But today’s garages have become an extension of a home’s living space, and that means creating a clean space with flooring that’s durable and easy to clean. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. “There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” said Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard coating that’s widely specified in commercial

settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last.” The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind each floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. Curing two times harder than epoxy, the flooring provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Any cleanup requires only a hose or mop.Available in hundreds of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. The garage will be as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the home. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Having a PremierGarage floor installed will also: » Increase the resale value of your home. » Improve safety with a floor that is slip, impact, and

heat resistant and brightens the area with increased light reflectivity. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a children’s play area or hobby nook. Call PremierGarage, powered by Tailored Living, and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

Sandy gets her inspiration for her paintings from hiking and traveling the back roads. She loves the ever changing skies and enjoys painting large clouds. The barns and farmland in Tennessee have been her focus since retiring. Lynn Straka, DVM, is a mixed media jewelry artist and practicing small animal veterinarian. Whether it is hand stamping designs or words, forging, creating three-dimensional forms, or impressing texture onto metal, each piece has its own one-of-a-kind, individual personality. The materials she uses most are sterling silver, copper, and bronze, with semiprecious stone accents or glass beads. As she learns and grows as an artist, she continues to gravitate towards materials that are recycled or repurposed. She love altering these metal items and incorporating them into her jewelry. Typically they are finished with an antiqued or aged patina to highlight their texture. The Art Market Gallery features two artists every month. Pirates Voyage Taking Shape in Pigeon Forge as Construction Progresses

D

olly Parton is making good on staking her claim in Pigeon Forge with the construction of the Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show, her newest attraction in the Smokies, and the treasure – buried and otherwise – already has begun to arrive and take shape at the venue. Construction on the Pirates Voyage building, located on the Parkway adjacent to The Island in Pigeon Forge, began the first week in January. The first – and biggest – task was to “build” the lagoon, the centerpiece of the set that will house the two pirate ships where the action of the entire show takes place. The digging of that foundation required removing more than 281 loads of dirt via dump truck for more than a month (that’s 4,500 cubic yards or 7,500 tons of dirt!); that part of the project was completed in February. That 15-foot lagoon soon will hold 300,000 gallons of water. The installation and finishing of 600

cubic yards of concrete and 50,000 lbs. of steel in the 30,000 square foot arena began the week of February 25. An extensive nationwide talent search began as soon as this entertainment project was announced last fall, and the cast of 20 has already begun show rehearsals and intense training for the acrobatic and diving skills required of pirates and mermaids alike in this show. One of the most anticipated phases of construction happened in late March when the exterior started to take shape and the

large Pirates Voyage sign was placed outside the building. “Among our ‘pirates crew’ here for our new Dinner & Show, we like to say that we are going ‘overboard’ with the details as we prepare everything – from the show elements to the new four-course menu to the exterior,” said Steve Cruz, Corporate Director of Marketing. “This is going to be a show that guests to our Smoky Mountain area are not going to want to miss. People have been asking for details, so we thought now would be a good time to share some of those.” Set to be complete in May, the construction phase is a $9 million project, in addition to the initial investment in the property for a total of $28 million. Reservations are now being taken for all 2019 shows. Ticket information is available at www.piratesvoyage.com or by calling 865505-AHOY (2469).

’ve used Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management since the first year it was offered, and I would NEVER consider not using it,” said a longtime client of Dayton’s. “I love being outdoors tending my flower garden and knowing that I won’t be bitten by those irritating pests! The monthly cost is affordable, plus it doesn’t matter if my neighbors use mosquito control or not; my yard is protected. I like the fact that this treatment is environmentally friendly and won’t hurt my dog or plants.” Besides being nuisance pests, mosquitoes can be serious public health threats by transmitting life-threatening diseases such as West Nile virus or the Zika virus, so it’s important to take precautions to prevent being bitten. Offered May through October, this program eliminates mosquitoes by stopping their seven-day breeding lifecycle from eggs to biting adults, treating mosquito breeding sites such as standing water, waterscapes, and mosquito resting areas like landscaping, vegetation, trees, and shrubs. Dayton’s is also your best resource for eliminating other warm weather pests such as carpenter bees, ants, and wasps. Professional treatment of the source of these pests, such as nesting places underground or inside wooden eaves, is the key to keep them from coming back! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather pests with an annual pest agreement. Other services include convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, pest control for ladybugs/bedbugs, monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation. Summer Is Upon Us! By Christina Fitzwilliam

ust typing those words sends a shiver of anticipation through my soul. For us, warmer weather means barbecues and weekend get-togethers with friends. But, before I feel comfortable inviting everyone over, my home needs some TLC. Perhaps your does, too. At the top of my list are reorganizing, lawn maintenance, and a good deep Countertops cleaning of all my hard surfaces, including floors, counters, walkways, and decks. Enter KItchen & Bath Cabinets the honey-do-list. Lucky for me, there is one chore on that list that John doesn’t mind tackling in our home. Guess which one! Ten years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant 35 Years of Prompt Professional Service manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and Deal directly with Country Carpet’s owners. dining areas clean. I think he tried almost every cleaning technique, product, and tool in No commissioned sales people. the market, but those restaurant floors never looked the way he wanted them to look. The LAST thing he wanted to do when he got home was to help me scrub the kitchen floor. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband fell in love with the equipment and the process immediately. He couldn’t wait to bring the equipment to Knoxville and tackle as many restaurant floors as he could manage. That first week we practiced using the equipment in our own home, and 3107 Hwy. 411 I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened Madisonville, TN 37354 several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got (Across from Sequoyah High School) free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they were equally impressed! Here’s some of what I have learned during the past 10 years. Every now and then, every home needs a deep cleaning – a time to clean places that aren’t part of a regular cleaning schedule or places that are generally overlooked. I’ve also learned that no matter how often a home is cleaned and the floors scrubbed, that dirt and contaminants build up over time, which cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. This dirt countertops tile & grout becomes trapped within the pores of the floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures and professional help. Surface Doc has the equipment that allows them to do what homeowners simply cannot do on their own. With a WE CLEAN AND SEAL: combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful showers & glass doors Tile & Grout • Concrete • Natural Stone • Carpet spinning brush, all contained under a pressure hood, floors Wood & Composite Decking • Travertine • Slate have no choice but to release all soil and contaminants burMarble • Granite • Bricks • Linoleum ied deep within them. Spring’s Super Separates Fashion Sense

I

f you’ve been shopping for a dress for the past few seasons, you’ve probably discovered that there aren’t many dresses in the market to purchase. But why stress for a dress? You can get the same look in this year’s strong separates! Lifestyles now are much more relaxed, very rarely calling for a dressy look that cannot be found by combining a beautiful, flowy palazzo pant with a gorgeous blouse. Even weddings, which at one time called for “a dress,” are attended now more in dressy pants or skirts, many times combined with a jacket to give a completed and quite formal look. Our models pictured are all wearing separates, enabling them to separate these pieces and combine them with other items in their wardrobe as well;

thus, wardrobe building at its best! Most any top can be mixed with denim, so use your jackets, blouses, and tunics to extend your casual wardrobe. Not the least important reason to choose separates instead of a dress is the fit. Larger top? Larger bottom? Separates will work perfectly for you! Most women are not perfectly shaped,

so it becomes almost impossible to find a dress style that fits her entire body. Look closely at our models, who are all wearing this season’s separates. Think of the many ways you can incorporate these pieces into your existing wardrobe… and remember, we’re always happy to have you bring pieces you already own into the store to freshen your look for a new season!

Caregivers Needed for Cats at Hiwassee College

N

ot only students and faculty are affected by the sudden closing of Hiwassee College. You may not be aware of the feral cat colonies that have been supported by students, staff, and faculty at the college. Feral cat colonies consist of homeless felines who are not adoptable due to their unsocialized history. The goal is to trap, spay/neuter, and release (TNR) these cats so that they are not reproducing and creating larger colonies. If cared for, they will live healthy, productive lives, and the colonies will eventually die off as the cats age. There are several such colonies on the Hiwassee Campus. It is not known if and how they will be cared for when the facility closes. It would be inhumane to abandon them. We are attempting to put a plan in place if needed to continue to care for these cats.

There are 25-30 cats in the area known as the Equipment Maintenance Barn that consists of two to four buildings. Twenty-one of those cats have been neutered. The “Hay Barn” has five cats, only one of whom has been neutered. There may be other caring areas on the campus as yet unidentified. One student has been handling the TNR of the cats and will continue to do so until the semester ends on May 10. We will be looking for someone to help with this necessary effort. The goal is to put together a plan of action to have caregivers ready to go over to the school once per day to feed the cats if and when the need arises. This is an emergency. If you think you might be able to help as a caregiver or in planning and implementation, please contact Judy via email at 1catnut@ gmail.com.

Performers and dates are subject to change.

About the Artists The Beach Boys

The B-52s Selling more than 20 million albums worldwide, the GRAMMY Award-nominated quartet The B-52s has impacted alternative music, fashion, and culture during the course of four decades with hits such as “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack,” and “Private Idaho.”

The Charlie Daniels Band and The Marshall Tucker Band North Carolina-raised Charlie Daniels made his mark with Southern rock anthems, award-winning country hits, and gospel albums. The Charlie Daniels Band’s performance at Biltmore this year is one of 100+ concert dates on the band’s 2019 schedule, coming to the stage with “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” “Long Haired Country Boy,” “The South’s Gonna Do It Again,” and “Uneasy Rider.” Equal parts rock, blues, jazz, country, soul, and bluegrass, The Marshall Tucker Band has a music catalog consisting of more than 20 studio albums, including songs like “Can’t You See” and “Heard It in a Love Song.”

T

o the casual rock music listener, the name Nils Lofgren may not ring a bell. However, you can be assured that you’ve heard him if not as a solo artist, you most definitely have as guitarist in Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, or time in Neil Young’s Crazy Horse (“then” – in the seventies – and now), in Ringo’s All Starr Band, or as the front man for one of his bands, Grin. So yeah, you’ve heard at least some of Nils’ work. It is because of the release of his latest album, Blue with Lou (featuring several songs he co-wrote with the late Lou Reed), that I reached out for my third interview with the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee by phone at his home in beautiful Scottsdale, Arizona. I hadn’t spoken with him since I interviewed him about his Face the Music release almost five years ago. After some small talk, Nils cut to the chase to tell me about Blue with Lou. “I’m excited to have a band of a great group of friends that made a record,” he said. “My dear brother, Tommy, who I don’t get to play with enough. It’s going to be exciting to get some new music out. Six songs co-written with Lou Reed is something; I knew those songs had to be shared on this record, too. Just a lot of elements that I set out to try to accomplish. Very important were the Lou songs and being able to play and sing everything live and really know the songs well; not having to write a line or two and then a bridge. ‘I’ll figure out the melody there later. I like the chords.’ I’ve done all of that. Now, especially as I get older, I know I’m much better off creating something as live as possible. With good friends and great players, I was able to accomplish that, thankfully. “I was coming up with some ideas. Years ago Lou and I wrote 13 songs together. Eight of them have been released; three by him. I put out three, originally, and a couple after that. And I always thought – regarding the ones left behind – Lou might call and say, ‘Hey, let’s take a look at those.’ And then, of course, tragically we lost Lou Reed, who was an incredible rock and roller, lyricist, poet, artist. I knew at that point – in the back of my mind – that

Chicago Chicago has garnered two Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and a Chicago street dedicated in their honor. The band hits the South Terrace stage to perform their well-known tunes such as “25 or 6 to 4,” “Saturday in the Park,” “Feeling Stronger Every Day,” and many others.

The O’Jays and Kool & The Gang The O’Jays have been performing for more than 50 years. Their single “Love Train” rose to number one on both the R&B Singles and the Billboard Hot 100 charts upon release. Other chart-topping hits include “Backstabbers,” “For the Love of Money,” and “Use Ta Be My Girl.” Classic R&B hits such as “Celebration,” “Cherish,” and “Ladies Night” have earned the Grammywinning group Kool & The Gang global fame and recognition and a following that spans generations.

Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman Amy Grant is recognizable in both the Christian and pop worlds, selling more than 30 million albums worldwide and receiving six Grammys, along with a

Nils Lofgren by

star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Music City Walk of Fame. Steven Curtis Chapman is the most awarded artist in Christian music history with accolades such as 58 Gospel Music Association Dove Awards, five Grammys, an American Music Award, and 48 number one singles.

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

the next record that I made, it would really be appropriate to get the notebooks out and get those songs in shape to record. That was part of it, too. “When we wrapped up the E Street Band tour in Australia – the River tour – our last legs were called the River. We did six weeks in Australia and New Zealand. And during that, I started writing in earnest and just kinda gathering my thoughts; working on the Lou songs; kind of refined them and arranged them. So there was that excitement. ‘Okay, now it’s time to make a record.’ “I’ve got the five Lou songs that nobody ever heard, and I wanted to re-do ‘City Lights’. That was a song that – when I sent Lou this cassette tape of 13 songs – was one that he said, ‘Look, I love your chorus. I’m going to keep it and write a song about Charlie Chaplin. It’s a beautiful chorus.’” Nils points to two songs as the album’s calling cards. “I’m very mostly proud and attached to all these songs,” he said. “Just because of the nature of the lyric, there’s a song called ‘Give’ that I think is kind of representative of the record in the sense that it’s a classic lyric by Lou. Give everything you got. There’s a six or seven minute jam that we kept on the record live as it went down. It reminded me of the old days of Cream and the Hendrix Experience, where there were power trios and long jams, which people don’t put on records anymore.” Nils shared so much during our chat, and virtually all of it can be read on www. boomerocity.com. But in wrapping up our chat, I asked Nils how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy would be. He said, in part: “Randy, I’m not ready to write my epitaph. I can’t go there. Ha! Ha! I hope I got a good piece of time left. I’ll be a bit more excited about what I’ve accomplished in the next 10 years than the past 67 years or whatever. But anyway, that’s the best I can give you right now.” Nils will be performing songs from Blue with Lou in Nashville and Atlanta this month. Visit www.NilsLofgren.com or www.boomerocity.com for details.

The Beach Boys have continued to create and perform with the same imagination and style that marked their debut more than 50 years ago with unforgettable classics such as “Surfin’,” “I Get Around,” and “California Girls.”

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Jimmie Ray Vaughan

B

lues aficionados are quite aware of guitar great Jimmie Ray Vaughan. He rose to fame as the axe handler for the Fabulous Thunderbirds and their smash hit, Tuff Enuff. This allowed him to work with such greats as The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and Carlos Santana, among many others. Since the T-birds disbanded, Jimmie has enjoyed a successful solo career, as well as teaming with others for fun side projects with such artists as Tanya Tucker and Dennis Quaid. He’s played in every one of Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festivals and will again later this year. It was because of the release of his seventh solo album, “Baby, Please Come Home,” that I was afforded the opportunity to fulfill one of my journalistic goals: Interviewing the blues great. Regarding the story behind “Baby, Please Come Home,” Jimmie said: “It was just a lot of songs that I love. I went and recorded them down in San Marcos, Texas. It’s my band. We went and recorded what we wanted to, and there it is! It sounds more simple than it is, I guess. It’s the real deal for us.” When I asked Jimmie how this LP is different for him than all of the other albums – solo or otherwise – in recording, approach, and related areas, he shared: “Well, I didn’t change my approach. I mean, basically, what I do is record live in the studio. I’ll get together with my band, and we rehearse and just play the songs. Then we just go into the studio and record them. If we need to overdub something, we do. But basically, it’s live.” Artists will often point to a particular song on their disc as a calling card for the entire album, but Jimmie actually seemed a tad stumped. “Gosh! Listen, I like everything on it. I’ve got Lefty Frizzell, Jimmy Donley. Songs by Lloyd Price, Bill Doggett, Earl Garner. Did I say T. Bone Walker? It’s really all over the place. When I first started playing, the first record that I bought was by a band called the Nightcaps. You know them. They were into the same thing. They even did some of the same songs. That’s really what I’m into. If you come see me, you’re gonna get all that, and I play stuff from my career over the years. But basically, I’m playing what I love.” I commented that the album is a “feel good” album that makes you involuntarily lift up your head and shoulders while tapping your feet. “I agree with you!” he said. “That’s really why we did it. It might be kinda hard to explain because it’s just what

we do. It’s real, and we’re not trying to put on any airs. This is us.” I know that fans would want to hear an answer to this, so I had to ask: Will there ever be any sort of reunion with the Thunderbirds, and is Jimmie Ray ever going to do any more recording with Dennis Quaid again? “Well, actually, I just did a song with Dennis Quaid and Tanya Tucker,” he said. “They came to town – they

came to Austin and called me and said, ‘Hey, come over here and we’re gonna record. Come over and play guitar on a song.’ I just did it! There’s the answer to that one. “I would love for the Thunderbirds to get back together! Of course a couple of the guys have died. We had a lot of drummers and bass players. So maybe we could talk Mike Buck into it and get us another bass player. I’d love to play with Kim Wilson. I’m playing anyway and very proud and happy about what we did, Kim and I, back in the day. That would be fun!” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Jimmie how he wanted to be remembered and what he hoped his legacy will be. “Oh, gosh! I don’t know that I want to come up with that answer,” he said. “I just want everybody to say what they want to say. I just have a lot of fun. I always have fun out here on the road with my buddies and me. We drive around and play guitars and play music, laugh and joke. This is the best job in the entire world! There couldn’t be a better job than this! You get to express yourself every night! Hang out with your friends. Sounds like a Willie Nelson song, doesn’t it? Ha! Ha! I can’t imagine that there would be a better job than this.” If you want to read more about what Jimmie Ray Vaughan shared – especially about the untimely passing of his brother, Stevie Ray Vaughan – visit www.boomerocity. com. He had a lot more to say. To keep up with all things JRV, visit his website, www.JimmieVaughan.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

A Home for Our Past: The Museum of East Tennessee History at 25 Feature Exhibition Updated and Extended

W

hen the Museum of East Tennessee History opened in 1993, it fulfilled a shared vision to preserve and interpret the region’s rich history for the benefit of all; a vision first articulated a century and a half earlier. On May 5, 1834, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey addressed a group of a historically-minded citizens gathered for the first annual meeting of the East Tennessee Historical and Antiquarian Society. Concerned that many of the participants in Tennessee’s early history were passing away and with them their memories, Ramsey issued a call to action: “Let us hasten to redeem the time that is lost.” Today, 185 years later, Dr. J.G.M. Ramsey’s plea to save Tennessee’s past continues to reverberate in the galleries of the East Tennessee Historical Society’s museum, a permanent home for our region’s cherished stories, traditions, and artifacts. The East Tennessee Historical Society actively began collecting artifacts and producing award-winning interpretive exhibits in 1993, which has now grown to more than 15,000 artifacts housed within the East Tennessee History Center. In this special exhibition, ETHS is excited to highlight East Tennessee’s unique history through a variety of artifacts, with at least one exhibited item from each year of ETHS’s active 25 years of collections, most of which are on display for the first time. The exhibition, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Museum of East Tennessee History and the 10th of the signature exhibition “Voices of the Land: The People of East Tennessee,” includes more than 35 artifacts and numerous photographs and illustrations representative of East Tennessee’s unique history. Some of the items include an 1883 Springfield penny-farthing, the first apparatus to be called a “bicycle;” an 1822 artificial hand that belonged to a teacher from Union County; a silver coffee and tea service from the East Tennessee

and Virginia Railroad presented to Superintendent James Baker Hoxsie upon his retirement in 1866; a coverlet woven by one of the famed Walker sisters of Greenbrier; a shirt stating “Healing in the name of Jesus. Take up serpents, Acts 2:38” worn during religious services practicing snake handling in Cocke County; an 1817 bead necklace belonging to Eliza Sevier, the wife of Templin Ross and the granddaughter of both John Sevier and Cherokee Chief Oconostota; a 1907 baseball uniform from a coal town’s team in Marrion County; and the distinctive backdrop and wall clock from the WBIR-TV variety program “The Cas Walker Farm & Home Show.” The exhibit also features a brilliant display of East Tennessee furniture, textiles, folk art, instruments, and vintage toys. New artifacts have been added to the exhibition for its extension, including a flag of the 39th Tennessee Regiment from the Battle of Horseshoe Bend; Civil War field drum, drumsticks, and daguerreotype that belonged to Martin E. Parmelle, Knoxville’s last Civil War veteran; a Tennessee muzzle-loading percussion rifle; a “Pots of Flowers” quilt attributed to Mary Jane Spangler Green that is said to have been hidden under her dress in Civil War raids to prevent being taken by Union soldiers; a wood-fired face jug by local potter Peter Rose; an 1825-1850 pie safe from the border of Greene and Hawkins Counties; a 1902 oak basket from the Riverdale Community of East Knoxville; a 1930s roadside sign for Indian Cave, the Grainger County tourist attraction; and paintings by Charles Krutch, Jim Gray, and Lucile Smith. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through June 9th. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children

hy not let the professionals at Undercover Systems help you take full advantage of unlimited out-of-door events this spring that your entire family will enjoy all year-round? Spring is the perfect time to install the totally unique and proprietary underdeck ceiling system from Undercover Systems under your home’s existing raised decks. This underdeck system will ensure that this year’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, searing summertime sun, and winter snow and ice. “Right now is the perfect time to weatherproof all of your out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you, each step of the way, until your project is completed to your total satisfaction. And because your project will be completed this spring, you can begin enjoying your new outdoor living spaces before barbeque season heats up.” Undercover’s patented underdecking system is designed by and manufactured exclusively by Undercover Systems, unlike other systems that use off-the-shelf, one-size-fits-all underdecking products. And because Undercover’s system is supported entirely by their patented drain system and not your deck, air is free to circulate under your deck to ensure the longevity of your deck’s wooden structural supports, preventing them from premature failure. You’ll also appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plan. You will also appreciate that every Undercover Systems decking project is personally supervised by Jim. A complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau, Undercover Systems offers homeowners the peace of mind that they deserve in a building contractor. Why not surprise your family this season with a special gift that the entire family can enjoy all year long and start creating a lifetime of memories? Who Do You Rely on for Your 401(k) Investment Strategy? By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

D

id you know that 6 in 10 people think their 401(k) will be their biggest source of income in retirement? Which makes sense when we consider that more than 73% of the employer pension plans that existed 20 years ago are now closed, frozen, or terminated. We’re on our own when it comes to creating retirement income using our employer-sponsored retirement plans. Your employer chooses which investment funds to offer within the plan, but they are prohibited by law from giving you investment advice. It can feel overwhelming when it comes to knowing which funds to pick and how often to rebalance. And who has the time or energy to research investment options after a long day at work? That’s where our new service, Plan Confidence, can help. A recent Schwab 401(k) participant survey found that more than 77% of people said they would be “extremely confident” or “very confident” in their investment

choices if they had the help of a professional. And in fact, a study published by the Vanguard Group in 2014 finds that using a professional investment advisor boosts your average return by 3% over time. The increase comes from improved portfolio diversification, regular rebalancing, and behavioral coaching. Using specialized software tools, we can provide customized 401(k) investment advice. And it’s easy! There is no need to roll your account over to an IRA. Your money stays right where it is – in your 401(k) plan, and we help you choose from within the options offered. Step 1: We assess your risk tolerance with an easy-to-use questionnaire. Step 2: Within your password-protected Plan Confidence account, we create personalized investment recommendations using your existing 401(k) options. Step 3: We give you step-by-step instructions on how to implement our suggestions. Step 4: We send you friendly quarterly reminders with

rebalancing instructions and any updates. With 24/7 access to your Plan Confidence account, you can review your recommendations and change your risk tolerance at any time. It’s easy to try because there is no long-term contract. And it’s economical: Monthly fees range from $35 to $95, depending on account size. If you’re one of the 6 in 10 people who think your 401(k) will be the biggest source of income in retirement, don’t guess at your investment choices. Get started building your Plan Confidence today. My People Fund Provides $200,000 to Sevier County Volunteer Fire Departments

T

he Dollywood Foundation’s My People Fund continues to provide for the local community, with Dolly Parton most recently presenting $200,000 to the fire chiefs of the eight volunteer fire departments located in Sevier County. The money, which Parton donated last month, will be used to support the volunteer fire departments in multiple ways. Each department receives $20,000 of the money for needed resources and equipment. The final $40,000 will go toward the construction of a new classroom at the countywide training center. After the pivotal role the departments played in fighting the 2016 wildfires, Parton said the donation only made sense at this time. “It’s only fitting that the last of the My People Fund will go to those who were the first to respond to the fires,” said Parton. Tim Baker, Chief of Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Sevier County Fire Chiefs Association President, said the money comes at a crucial time for both his department and the training center. The new classroom at the training center will be used by all county fire

departments and local law enforcement. “We are so thankful for this donation to all of the fire departments and for our training center,” said Baker. “The Waldens Creek VFD will use part of the money to purchase gear and part of the money to replace the roof on the station. We needed about $40,000 to meet our goal for the classroom, and now we have it. This is fantastic.” The Dollywood Foundation established the My People Fund just 48 hours after the 2016 wildfires. The Fund provided $1,000 each month for five months to Sevier County families whose primary residences were destroyed in the fires. During the sixth month, a $5,000 check was provided to each family.

Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c. “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”

“Building our retirement home in Kahite in East Tennessee was a dream that we had for many years - the mountains were calling us! However, building a home from a distance was a daunting task. We lived many miles away in Fort Lauderdale and, as an architectural project manager, Frank wanted to be there every day to make decisions. We had to hunt to find a local builder whom we could trust to produce the quality of product we desired and help us stay on budget, as well as keep us informed every step of the way. We made a number of trips to TN to interview builders, and we finally found one who could make our dream possible - Keener Homes. We were treated like our project mattered from the very beginning! The quality of their workmanship and attention to detail is excellent. Their project manager, Derek Miller, and their hand-picked subcontractors are the best in the business. Communication with us as long-distance clients was spot on - we were kept up to date with regular written reports, phone calls, and photos. We found Keener Homes to be very honest and knowledgeable, and they worked with us to produce a high-quality product within our budget. We are delighted to have a beautiful home, as well as wonderful new friends with the Keener Homes family! For quality, honesty, and reliability, we highly recommend Keener Homes!”

The Knoxville Choral Society Closes 2018-2019 Season with Sing! Knoxville Concert

T

he Knoxville Choral Society has for many years established itself as the premier ensemble for choral masterworks and classical choral music in East Tennessee. The Sing! Knoxville concert is an opportunity for us to show our audiences the versatility of the choral art in today’s performing arts scene. Choral music today spans far more than the masterworks and church music we regularly perform. We’ll be looking at new, atmospheric music by modern, living composers, artful arrangements by popular artists such as Ed Sheeran and John Legend, world music styles incorporating Spanish and Arabic languages, as well as new arrangements of well known spirituals. The audience will be invited to sing with the Knoxville Choral Society as well. We’re going to be singing about singing and why singing is such an important part of our culture and how we connect with each other through music and togetherness. Come sing with the Knoxville Choral Society under the direction of conductor and artistic director, John R. Orr. The Sing! Knoxville concert takes place on Sunday, May

19, at 7:30 pm at the historic Bijou Theatre, located at 803 S Gay Street. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased from a choral society member, by visiting the Bijou Theatre website (www.knoxbijou.org), or by calling 865-6841200, option 2. About Knoxville Choral Society The Knoxville Choral Society is an auditioned choir that has been bringing the joy and wonder of choral music to East Tennessee since 1951. They are dedicated to maintaining a rich tradition of choral excellence for both their members and audiences. For more information, visit www.knoxvillechoralsociety.org.

May 30-31 & June 1 at 7:30 pm St. John’s Cathedral

erformed with full cast and orchestra in the courtyard of St. John’s Cathedral, the Marble City Opera presents the Puccini classic “Suor Angelica,” which follows the events of a single day in the lives of Sister Angelica and the other nuns in a convent. Their peaceful lives are interrupted one day when Angelica’s aunt, the Principessa, arrives with news of their family. Having been cloistered within the walls of the convent for several years, the information is completely new to Angelica and shakes

her to the core. The tragic events that are set off eventually lead to her ultimate redemption, and the story masterfully told through Puccini’s score make this a can’t-miss staple of the operatic canon. The cast includes Kathryn Frady as Suor Angelica, Julie Belanger-Roy as The Principessa, and Jacquie Brecheen as Suor Genovieffa. Allan R. Scott is the conductor and James Marvel is stage director. Tickets cost $30 for adults and $15 for students. For more information, visit www.marblecityopera.com.

You Might Need a New Closet

May, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

B

orrowing from Jeff Foxworthy, here are some thoughts about organization: » If more clothes are on the floor than on your hanging rod, you might need a new closet. » If your wire shelving is falling from the wall, you might need a new closet. » If you wear the same pair of shoes every day because you can’t find the ones you want, you might need a new

closet. » If your organizing system is to shut the closet door so you can’t see the clutter, you might need a new closet. There are many reasons to consider getting a new closet system: To get better organized, to have more storage, to make a more beautiful space. The best reason to do any project in the home is to add joy to your life – to create a space that is welcoming and saves time getting dressed.

Before the current Maria Kondo craze, NAPO (National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals) members have helped clients deal with clutter and be better organized. Professional organizers help to demystify the challenges faced in being more productive at home. Barbara Hemphill introduced the “Art of Wastebasketry™” in her book Taming the Paper Tiger at Home. It was Barbara that said, “Clutter is postponed decisions™.” In other words, the first step is deciding what needs to be edited. Then Julie Morgenstern wrote Organizing from the Inside Out, which states that we have to accept responsibility for our disorganization. She shares that change starts within us; the problem is not caused by others. When Peter Walsh came on the national organizing scene, his theme was (and still is) we need to Lighten Up. Our clutter is weighting us down. Now it’s Maria Kondo’s time in the spotlight sharing that our things must bring us joy. These are all great principles to learn from when organizing around the house, especially starting a closet design project. After the clutter is gone, a good custom storage design will give the best use of space. It can be grand or simple. Either way, having a system designed for your needs will keep things accessible and organized. And today’s closet systems have flexibility to change as your needs change. If your closet does not add value to your life, then you need a new closet. Call Closets by McKenry for your complimentary consultation. Closets by McKenry 865-249-6382 www.ClosetsByMcKenry.com

Pokeadot Hops and Gardens: A Farm with a Mission

O

By Stephanie Trost

n August 20, 2012, Mike Trost, a 32-year U.S. Army veteran, was in a village in Eastern Afghanistan where he had been training Afghan nationals to become Afghan national police. While in this village, one of the policemen that he had been training turned a machine gun on them. Mike received five gunshots from a PK machine gun through both legs, buttocks, and his right hand. When a wife receives that call informing her that her husband has been wounded, you have absolutely no idea what you’re walking into. I had no idea that Mike would be hospitalized for a year or that we would be away from home as long as we were. It is a life-changing process emotionally, physically, and financially. You are literally juggling cats to try to stay above water and figure out all these changes. This led to a year of hospitalization at Walter Reed, requiring 35 surgeries. After returning home in 2013, Mike really struggled with his injured leg. They managed to save his leg, but he was in extreme pain most of the time. This was a daily battle for both of us. In 2014, due to his need for medical care, I retired from my position as Vice Pres-

ident and Branch Manager with Sun Trust to become Mike’s full-time caregiver. In 2016, Mike had to have his injured leg amputated. While life-changing, Mike was now free from his constant pain, and he came off all of his medications. This gave Mike an entirely new direction in his life, and he began refocusing on his future. Mike had always wanted to grow hops, so we started looking for land to make this happen. I always laugh and say we had one plan but God had a completely different plan. We had no idea what we were walking into farming hops. We purchased rural farm land in 2017 and began what is still an ongoing new journey for both of us. We cleared the land and have started an organic practices vegetable garden, a hop garden, built a log cabin, and a variety of equip-

ment and storage sheds. Again, God had a plan for us all along, and we were really on his ride. We would get up every day and go to the farm and tackle a new project, task, infrastructure, and direction. The property has completely changed from its humble beginnings and is continuing to improve daily. The land has given Mike a new purpose and direction in life. I have seen the light in his soul reignite. We have also invited other wounded warriors to come out to the farm and work with us. They share with us by telling us how healing it feels for them to work on the farm. This year we will have hops that will be harvested in August and will have a full vegetable operation in production by summer. We are in the process of moving our animals from our small farm in Maryville to our new farm located at 401 Sleepy Valley Road in Madisonville, where we also hope to build our permanent residence in the future. Are you in the market for some fresh, homegrown vegetables? You can purchase vegetables with the Homegrown by Heroes awarded by The Farmers Veteran Coalition at the Greenback Farmers Market on Tuesdays from 10-2 and Saturdays from 9-1. Step up Your Shoe Storage

eals, flats, wedges, strappy, platform, sandals, boots... yes, ladies, we have a wide variety of shoe styles because there are so many different occasions that require different kinds of footwear, clothing, and accessories. Unfortunately, without dedicated storage in a closet, shoes are usually piled on the floor where they get kicked around, stepped on, and need replacing more often. Properly storing shoes in your closet will help display your favorite footwear while saving space, time, and money. No matter what the size of your closet, these options will help you step up your shoe storage. Shoe Shelves Using dedicated solid shelves keep shoes in top form and are easily seen when organized by type and color. To maximize space, place one shoe forward and the other backwards, which allows four pairs of women’s shoes on a 24” long shelf. This placement will also let you see the shoe and heal height at a glace. To better protect shoes, they can be placed in their original boxes or see-through plastic keepers. The same 24” shelf will only fit three shoe or plastic boxes side-by-side, but they can be stacked two or three high. Slanted Shelves with Shoe Fence Slanted shelves with a low decorative rail in the front also keep shoes visible and organized and adds a decorative touch to a closet. However, if you have a large number of shoes and a small closet, slanted shelves take up more space than flat shelves because they are hung at an angle. This reduces the number of shoes that can be stored in the same space. Baskets for Flip-Flops It’s spring, and women love their flip-flops! Storing them in a pretty basket and clipping pairs together will save valuable space on your shoe shelves. The basket can fit on the floor or the top shelf of your closet. Shoe Cubbies Each side-by-side mini bin houses one pair of shoes. This makes for easy storage and minimizes dust. However, individual cubbies take up more closet space than dedicated shelving. If you have a small closet, opt for shelving. From high-heel shoes to your shirts, Tailored Living will design and install a custom closet that meets your individual needs… even on a shoestring budget! igger is a beautiful, lovable two-and-a-half year old Plott Hound/ Boxer mix who loves to walk and be around people. She is an active girl who is excited to see people and greets everyTigger one with a wagging tail and a big smile. She gets along well with children and other dogs but, because of her size, would probably do best with older children. If you are looking for a hiking companion, this is your girl. She is already spayed and ready to meet her new family. Shaggy is a young adult male mixed retriever. He weighs about 45 pounds, has been neutered, and is up to date on all shots. Shaggy is housebroken, cratetrained, and walks very well on a leash with no pulling. He was previously abused and is somewhat shy until he knows you will not hurt him. Shaggy loves attention, wants to play, and would be excellent with children. He does well with other dogs and cats and loves his treats. He does need a fencedin yard. Please make Shaggy part Shaggy of your family. Looking for a part-time couch companion? Bella’s your girl! She is a four-and-a-half year old, affectionate, gray and white shorthair who is perfect for people who will actively play with her and cuddle on the couch with her. She does need daily playtime and diet control (needs canned food and no dry until optimum weight is achieved) to keep her active and healthy. Bella is an indoor only cat who has not been around other animals. Properly introduced using the method recommended on our website (under Pets, Helpful Hints), she may adjust to another animal. As do all new pets, she will need some time to adjust to her new environment. Henna is a one-and-a-half year old brown tabby purring machine who was brought in as a stray. She is very sweet and loves everyone! She will sit and stare at you with a questioning look if you stop petting her. We don’t know if she gets along with other cats or dogs, but she sure loves people. Lightning is a gorgeous emerald green eyed, medium hair

made me laugh. It made me cry.” Written with the same humor and wit that won Piper an Emmy for Rugrats, an American Comedy Award Nomination for Top Female Comedian, and her own Showtime Special, Monica takes us on a hilarious journey from her childhood in the Bronx all the way to Broadway. Her questioning of what it means to “be Jewish” leads her on a journey of exploration that concludes with an understanding of what it means to have “a Jewish Heart” – one of humor, compassion, acceptance, and good deeds. In fact, a Jewish Heart is a human heart; something that can be shared universally and appreciated by those across all faiths and backgrounds. The audience falls in love with her whole family, but especially her father – who began his career as a comedian and provides some of the funniest, most poignant moments of the play. This one-woman play is written and performed by Emmy Award Winning writer, comedian, and actress Monica Piper. It’s a provocative, entertaining, and poignant exploration of faith, family, and the values that inform our lives. Critics have praised the show as “a gem” (New York Times) and “a wonderful evening of entertainment” (Broadway World). Often compared to Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays and Amazon Prime’s hottest comedy, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Not That Jewish is a story about everyday events written through the lens of a Jewish Heart. Attendees don’t need to be Jewish (or religious at all) to appreciate and enjoy the show – they need only to be human. Monsignor Jim Lisante, host of “Personally Speaking” on Sirius XM Radio, said, “Monica Piper – a great writer, comedienne, and actress – has put together a work of art about life, family, and values. One of the most moving things I’ve ever seen. It

other Nature has put on quite a show this spring in spite of her occasional dips into frost territory! Every morning it seems as if something new has bloomed out or leafed out. We had a fairly mild winter, even though it seemed to be always rainy. That leads to a good/bad scenario for our plants. On the good side, most did not suffer cold damage (other than those unfortunate plants that happened to start growing just before one of our cold snaps). On the bad side, it never got cold enough to kill back the insects and fungal spores. We also had a wet winter, which means that some plants that hate to have wet feet were very unhappy. If you do have unhappy plants, I need you to just take a deep breath and chill. Patience, grasshopper! I know you want to “fix” your plants, but fertilizing and pruning just add additional stress. Give them a couple of weeks to recover and then remove damaged foliage and add a nice, mild organic fertilizer. If you see signs of disease, pick up any leaves as they fall and get them away from the plant. Treat with a fungicide if the problem is continuing. If you see insects, make sure they are actually damaging the plant before you start freaking out and spraying. Some bugs are actually very beneficial! You can always bring a sample of your plant in if you need

help identifying a problem. We can help you find the correct solution. Now we can talk about planting, because that is what most of you are wanting to do! You can plant just about anything now except cool season veggies. Trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, and warm season vegetables like to be planted in May because the soil temperature has warmed and the air temperature is more stable. Those of you who have been chomping at the bit since March

are free to play in the dirt! Since we don’t know what the weather is going to do, be prepared! Water when it is dry, cover if it gets cold, and be flexible. Remember that you are dealing with living things that have needs, not plastic plants. We have many young people (and several older ones) that are planting vegetables or herbs for the first time. Here are a few things to consider: 1. All of them need at least six hours of sun. If you don’t have enough sunny space for a full-sized garden, try raised beds or even containers. Most herbs and vegetables will do well in either of those. 2. A few plants do not play well together. Do your research about smart ways of arranging plants so that they cooperate instead. 3. Flimsy tomato cages are not worth the cheap price you pay. Nothing is more frustrating than getting lovely tomatoes established only to have the cages collapse and dump them into a heap. Buy big, sturdy cages or make them out of metal fencing. 4. Make the soil as good as you can. Clay holds nutrients but can turn into a concrete-like state when it gets hot and dry. Combat this by amending with topsoil, peat moss, compost and anything else EXCEPT sand. Sand + clay = brick. If you already planted, you have now reached the maintenance stage. This means you need to check your plants daily for water, insects, and fungal problems. It is much easier to treat these problems if you find them early. Good hygiene will

prevent many fungal problems, so remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves. If insects have invaded, make sure that it is a problem insect before you start spraying. Some insects are beneficial. For example, one ladybug can clean all the aphids off your tomato plant in a single day! If it is a problem insect, always start with the least toxic product first. Usually this is an insecticidal soap. Keep an eye on your container gardens. After they have been planted a few weeks they usually need regular maintenance. Snip leggy plants, deadhead spent blooms, and fertilize regularly. This is especially true of flowers that bloom prolifically. We fertilize weekly with a mild strength water soluble product. I like the ones from Espoma because they have a measuring cap. Don’t forget out birds and our pollinators! I encourage all of you to plant at least one plant in your yard that is friendly to these creatures. We have lists here or you can check online for ideas. If you have bird feeders, please make sure they are clean and full. There are lots of babies, so those bird parents are busy and hungry! I will also remind you that we get several trucks every week this time of year. Stop by often to see what is new. Now go play in the dirt! Annual High School Art Show

A

thens Area Council for the Arts (AACA) announces the annual High School Art Show showcasing art by high school students in McMinn and surrounding counties. The exhibit is on display at The Arts Center, located at 320 North White Street in Athens, Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm through May 17. The goal of this show is to promote art by local high school students and to provide an opportunity to participate in an open art exhibit. The exhibit was judged by TWU art professor and artist Jerry Hagaman. Hagaman noted that the exhibit was difficult to judge, as there were many quality pieces worthy of recognition for skill, talent, and creativity. The 50+ attendees at the opening reception voted “Black History Month” by Darius Green as the People’s Choice winner. Additionally, three student artists were awarded cash prizes. Hagaman had this to say of the prize winners: 1st Honorable Mention: Sew in Style by Haley Linder “This dress is simply beautiful and perfectly crafted.” 2nd Honorable Mention: My Wonderland by Fara Howard “This painting really pulls you into the space. There is a

wonderful interplay between the figure and the background.” 3rd Place: Untitled by Sarah Elliott “This work has an exquisite dreamlike quality. The artist has deftly handled the medium and given us an image that both intrigues and satisfies. What are we looking at here? The colors suggest something floral but the form, or lack of it, suggests liquid or vapor. In the center of the image we start to see something solidify but not quite. As the colors, lines, and shapes expand outward, they soften and dissipate, thus enhancing the mystery.” 2nd Place: Flowers in Vases by Abigail Rayburn “It is difficult to put my finger on why I think this piece holds up. So many things are at odds in this work, but I think that is its charm. The flowers contrast so starkly with the rendering of the vases in black and white. Then there is the green bottle and the blue handle on the center large pitcher that weighs the drawing to the right, while the clear bottle on the left pulls us back by virtue of the high contrast and the difference in its shape and angle. The forms are beautifully crafted but the artist has chosen to let them float in front of a black void. Bravo.” 1st Place: Japanese Building by Madison Tuck

Haley Linder, Abigail Rayburn, Madison Tuck, and Darius Green were among the artists awarded prizes at Athens Area Council for the Arts’ Annual High School Art Show

“Japanese Building commands attention with the stark contrast of white on black. That alone is an insufficient reason to choose this piece for an award. Anyone can shout. What is striking about the work is compositional sophistication and meticulous line work. We look down on the house that seems to thrust itself outward toward us from a dense mixture of circles, lines, and dots (stones, steps, and foliage). Note the different points of view as you meander through this drawing. While we look down at the house, we look across a great distance to the mountains. We see the stylized clouds in varying sizes suggesting space. The sun is a simple circle with straight lines radiating outward creating a perfectly flat plane. The repetition of lines and shapes and the variety of them gives this work both its energy and its unity.”

Innovative Solutions for Your Kitchen Challenges

I

f you’re like most people, you have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization, or access. These challenges in your home can be extremely frustrating. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy. Issue #1 – Deep or narrow pantry shelves:

categories and keeping your most frequently used items up front, it’ll be easy to make the most of your pantry. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier Issue #2 – High overhead cabinets:

as baking sheets and trays. When these items are stored vertically, there’s no need to grab the entire stack to sort through items until you find what you need and you only need to be able to reach the bottom of the item, which makes access much easier. Issue #3 – Blind corner cabinet:

Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like

Some homeowners struggle with a blind corner cabinet, which is a cabinet that extends back to a corner and makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50% and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4 – Tricky space under the sink: The area under the sink often accumulates items over the years that you no longer need. It’s a good idea to go through this space and throw out items in order to free up space and gain organization. Once this is done, consider a ShelfGenie under sink Glide Out, which has a pull-out shelf for trash bags, dishwashing detergent, and other cleaning supplies, plus an attached riser that keeps sponges or brushes close at hand. It is custom designed to avoid pipes, hoses, and the garbage disposal so it maximizes your usable space. Issue #5 – Hard-to-reach spaces: For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6 – In-the-way trashcans: Having a trashcan in the middle of your kitchen takes up space and it can be unsightly. You can keep it out of sight – but always within reach – with a Glide Out trash/recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution. Most lower cabinets are deep enough that you can add a second can for recycling. To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary in-home consultation with a ShelfGenie designer today. Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces 16th Annual Heritage Happening Gala and Auction May 18

P

reparations are well underway for the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center’s 16th annual Heritage Happening Dinner and Auction. The well-attended event supports the Heritage Center’s goals to preserve, communicate, and celebrate the rich history of the Smoky Mountains and their people. This year the Heritage Happening will be held at the Center’s home in Townsend on Saturday evening, May 18. It will feature both silent and live auctions, as well as an elegant dinner catered by Rothchild’s of Knoxville. Guests will enjoy live Appalachian music and welcome from local writer and storyteller, Sam Venable. The wide array of unique items to be auctioned this year includes beautiful artwork from area craftsmen, destination vacation trips, wine, Smoky Mountain activities, and food and dining experiences, thanks to the generosity of donors across East Tennessee and to the dedication of our Guild members who solicit these diverse items. To preview action items, visit www.auctria.com/auction/HH2019. Items will be continually added, so check the website frequently. The Heritage Center Guild was founded by a group of 21 women in 2003 with a goal of helping to raise funds for the yet-to-be-built Heritage Center museum. According to the Guild’s mission, it annually hosts the Heritage Happening auction and dinner to help support the continuing development of the Center and its extensive educational programs for children. This year more than 6,000 students are expected to participate in the Center’s unique educational programs. Commenting on the Guild’s role in the Heritage Center’s story, Director Bob Patterson said, “We could not do educational programming, bring in new exhibits, maintain our grounds, and fund transportation for visiting schoolchildren, among many other needs, if it were not for this Guild. In addition to their fundraising efforts, they volunteer thousands of hours each year’s in support of school field trips, festivals, and concerts.” Invitations to the 2019 Heritage Happening were mailed in April to Heritage Center members and past attendees, but all are welcome to purchase tickets by calling the Heritage Center at 865-448-0044 Monday through Friday from 10 am to 5 pm or by going online to www.auctria.com/auction/HH2019 or visiting the Heritage Center website at www.gsmheritagecenter. org. Tickets are $125 per person, $90 of which is tax deductible. Online pre-bidding on silent auction items will open on or around May 1st, and a code to access the auction site will be emailed to ticket holders on that date. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is 501(c)(3) Museum and Cultural Center. The Heritage Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sunday from noon to 5 pm. Admission is free for Heritage Center members, adults are $8, seniors 60+ and children ages 6-17 are $6, and children 5 and under are free. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is a not-for-profit museum and is located between the traffic light and the national park entrance on scenic Highway 73.
