5 Reasons a River Cruise is the Ideal Way to See Europe

A

Article courtesy of BPT

n international trip is the experience of a lifetime. If you’re looking for a travel option that offers up-close interactions with a cross section of countries – but without the hassle of planning and executing that level of detail yourself – a river cruise may be the option you’re seeking. Unlike an ocean cruise, which typically docks farther away, the size of a river ship allows guests the opportunity to port in small, lesser-known towns and sail into the heart of iconic cities, such as Budapest and Amsterdam. Each destination offers

extensive time to absorb and experience landmarks, cuisine, and cultural offerings. Whether exploring castles along Europe’s Danube River appeals to your wanderlust or making your way through the rich and complex history of France’s Bordeaux wine region is more your speed, river cruising offers the perfect opportunity for those with a hunger to expand their minds and deepen their cultural enrichment. Before you plan, here are some of the most important features and benefits of an international river cruise. » Less hassle, less stress: A river cruise offers a greatly simplified mode of travel. Once you step aboard your river cruise ship, you unpack once and spend the rest of your trip focused only on enjoying the journey. Some cruise lines feature inclusive pricing, so things like your meals, Wi-Fi, and lodging are already settled. » Craft your own journey: Many river cruise packages offer flexible options to help you design the journey you’ve always imagined. You can select from a variety of

port excursions, putting you in charge of your perfect day out. While land excursions are an additional cost in most cases, Viking’s river cruise itineraries offer one free shore excursion in each port along with additional optional excursions to book based on your specific interests with knowledgeable local guides. Also, preand post-excursion stays at the start and end points of your voyage let you explore the area for a few extra days. » Ample time to engage and explore: River cruising lets you spend a lot of time in many towns and cities along the river. Typically each day of the journey begins in a different port. Just step off the ship, join your chosen excursion, and start learning and experiencing. » A rich, cultural sampler: If you’re eyeing grand destinations like Central Europe and France for your travels, you’re probably the kind of person who is hungry to learn about the art, cuisine, history, daily living, and other fascinating aspects of culture. Viking has not only developed

engaging and culturally immersive excursions, but also created programs onboard the ship to deepen your knowledge and appreciation of the places you visit, from home visits to Privileged Access excursions exclusive to the cruise line. Before you embark, be sure to avail yourself of the many online resources available through Viking. From online videos to reading and film lists, you’ll find plenty of enriching content to help you feel prepared and excited for your journey. » Enjoy the riches of the river life: Of course a host of pleasures await that only a cruise down the river can bring. On your journey, expect scenic views of cities, landscapes, and architectural features not easily seen while taking a traditional land tour, as well as alfresco dining and relaxing on the deck. Once you experience a river cruise in a new country, you’ll discover what an enriching experience a vacation can be. Athens Chamber Welcomes George W. Bush to Annual Benefit T 2A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2019

he Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce George W. Bush will be the special guest at the chamber’s 13th Annual Benefit on June 22 at McMinn County High School. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.athenschamber.org or by calling the chamber at 423-745-0334. George W. Bush, the 43rd President of the United States, was sworn into office on January 20, 2001, and served as Commander in Chief for two consecutive terms. Before his presidency, he served for six years as Governor of the State of Texas. As President, George W. Bush worked to expand freedom, opportunity, and security at home and abroad. His first initiative as President was the No Child Left Behind Act, a bipartisan measure that raised standards in schools, insisted on accountability in return for

federal dollars, and led to measurable gains in achievement – especially among minority students. Faced with a recession when he took office, President Bush cut taxes for every federal income taxpayer, which helped lead to an unprecedented 52 straight months of job creation. The most significant event of President Bush’s tenure came on September 11, 2001, when terrorists killed nearly 3,000 people on American soil. President Bush responded with a comprehensive strategy to protect the American people. He led the most dramatic reorganization of the federal government since the beginning of the Cold War, reforming the intelligence community and establishing new institutions like the Department of Homeland Security. He built global coalitions to remove violent regimes in Afghanistan and Iraq that threatened America, liberating more than 50 million

people from tyranny. Recognizing that freedom and hope are the best alternative to the extremist ideology of the terrorists, he provided unprecedented American support for young democracies and dissidents in the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere. In the more than seven years President Bush remained in office following September 11, 2001, the United States was not attacked again. Through events like the Warrior Open Golf Tournament, a 36-hole competition that brings together patriots who volunteered to defend our nation in the face of danger and were severely wounded in the War on Terror, and programs such as Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon, an innovative partnership established to leverage public and private investments in global health to combat breast and cervical cancer in developing nations in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, President Bush continues his public service and advancing the policies he has championed throughout his life through the work of the Bush Institute.

Oak Ridge Junior Playhouse Theatre Camp T

HE OAK RIDGE

Junior Playhouse Theatre Camp will be held during two consecutive weeks in June: Week 1, June 10 through June 14, will be for rising grades 3 to 5 and 9 to 12. Week 2, June 17 through June 21, will be for rising grades 6 to 8. Both weeks will have the same format. The camp will run from 9 am to 3 pm for the first four days and will go longer on Friday, as it will end with a showcase performance at 5 pm on the stage of the Oak Ridge Playhouse. Courtney Minton and Rollin Prince are experienced theatre teachers, as well as area performers. Both teachers are excited to provide a creative, encouraging, and collaborative environment where students can build confidence while pushing their abilities and also having fun. With a camp theme this year of “Theatre Through the Ages,” campers will, through games, exercises, and instruction, travel through the history of theatre during the course of their week. The showcase on Friday will give the campers the experience of performing on the historic Oak Ridge Playhouse stage while also enabling their friends and family to see what they’ve learned and accomplished. Tuition for each of the week-long camps is $225. For more information or to register, visit www.orplayhouse.com/summer-camp.

DRAPERIES SUMMER

The ability of drapes to reduce heat gain depends on fabric type and color. Mediumcolored draperies with white lining can reduce heat gain by 33 percent, according to the DOE. Hang the draperies as close to the window as possible. For maximum effect, install a cornice at the top of the draperies.

Air conditioning is blissful during the summer, but running it nonstop during a heat wave will have you cursing when you get your utility bill. Fortunately, clever use of draperies, blinds, and other window treatments can help keep your house cool and your bills in check.

ENERGY

SHADES On summer days, keep your draperies closed. "Particularly on the side of the house or apartment where the sun is coming in," says Allen Drury, a representative of Con Edison.

The Department of Energy says that smart management of window coverings can reduce heat gain by up to 77 percent. And, as a bonus, these same practices can reduce heat loss in the winter! Combinations of draperies, valances or cornices, roman shades, cellular shades, blinds, and films have the best effect.

For more tips and ideas to keep cool this summer, call us today!

& MORE... SAVINGS Cellular shades are the best and most energy efficient window coverings you can buy. They use a series of cell pockets to trap air around your windows, keeping your rooms warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The cells use a unique design shape similar to a honeycomb and are often referred to as such.

June Highlights

L

From the Publisher

ast month was devoted to honoring moms, and in June, we set aside a day to honor dads and all that they do for their families. My dad held a very special place in my heart, and although he has been gone for a number of years, he is still sorely missed. As a youngster growing up, my dad was always there for both of his daughters. He would do anything for us, whether it was playing catch in the backyard after his hard day at work, playing a board game in the evening, or just treating us to a day out in the park topped off with an ice cream sundae. My dad was the best. Later, when I was in school and needed help with my studies, my dad would be there to quiz me in math and spelling. He always encouraged education, and I know he wanted both of his daughters to go to college. It was a proud day when he saw me graduate. The influence my dad had on me has helped me in school, at work, and in business. Dad was always organized and detail oriented. He wrote everything Visit online at down on sticky notes. Tellico Village, Kahite Community American Raises $25,000 for Hopewell Legion Post 256

O

Volunteer Fire Department

n May 4th, with one eye on the sky and one on the radar screen, the Annual Hopewell Volunteer Fire Department fundraiser and Kahite Community Day kicked off their annual fundraiser event and major fundraiser for the Hopewell VFD, which provides fire and EMR support to the Kahite neighborhood of Tellico Village. The event started with a golf tournament with a 9 am shotgun start at the Links at Kahite in Vonore. This year’s major tournament sponsor was Hughes and Associates headquartered in Cleveland, TN. This year’s event was supported by more than 75 local Vonore and Madisonville business organizations that made donations and/or provided silent auction items for local residents to bid on. In addition, Kahite residents made personal donations totaling $13,000 in support of the fire department. Total contribution in the amount of more than $23,000 will be presented to Jerry Allison, treasurer of the Hopewell VFD. While it was a partly cloudy day with rain threatening, 84 golfers teed off and enjoyed the Links at Kahite course. After each foursome had completed at least 11

holes, the rain came. While everyone waited to see if the sky would clear, lunch was served to all the golfers and approximately 25 other people. After waiting 45 minutes, the tournament was called complete. Prizes were awarded for the top two teams: 1st – David McDonald, Bronco Vonhoerling, Brian Johnson, and Randy Roffers 2nd – Rich Hughes, Granger Hughes, Chris Odom, and Jeremy Smith (the Hughes and Associates team, who donated their winnings to the Hopewell VFD) Five Hopewell Firefighters brought three fire trucks for viewing and community education. The LifeStar helicopter was scheduled to land, but weather conditions canceled its appearance. In addition to the golf tournament, a silent auction, a “putt-putt” course on the putting green, and a Hand and Foot Card Tournament added to the fun for non-golfers. This made it a complete community day! Anyone wishing to donate to the Hopewell Volunteer Fire Dept. may contact Don Hageman at 423-884-3501.

Knoxville. Para athletes will complete one, two, or three laps of the course depending on their classification. The professional men and women will compete on a modified version of the same course but with an additional 100+ feet of elevation thrown in for extra challenge and a few daring downhills. The Para-cycling Road Race will be held Saturday, June 29, through the heart of Knoxville. Racers will use the same section of the James White Parkway that pro cyclists will use during Sunday’s USA Pro Road Championships. Merging onto the James White from Riverside Drive, racers will loop the parkway from Riverside to Sevierville Pike multiple times before rocketing back down to Riverside Drive and a fast technical finish at Gov. Ned McWherter Park. “We are thrilled to welcome these Para athletes to East Tennessee,” said Kim Bumpas, President of Visit Knoxville. “This is our third consecutive year to host the USA Cycling Time Trial, Criterium, and Pro Road Championships. The ability to include additional Championships with U.S. Paralympics Cycling creates an incredible fan experience in downtown Knoxville. We can’t wait to see it all come together.” For more information on the athletes, events, and membership programs, visit www.USACycling.org. Moving Out

M

any retirement communities are currently experiencing a very high volume of turnover, and Tellico Village and Rarity Bay are certainly no exception. As we begin moving out and into the next chapter of life, there are a few things that can be done to help with a smooth transition to the next salon. First, if you have been in a long-term relationship with your stylist, there could be some emotions that get triggered when you begin thinking about life after your upcoming move. It is easy to think that people, places, or

things in our lives are irreplaceable, but believe me, life will go on. Begin your research for salons before your arrival in your new city. This can easily be done with the assistance of the Internet, and do not be afraid to share potential salons with your existing stylist before you move. There are a number of websites and apps that rate local businesses, and you may find that gathering as much information as possible before your arrival will be quite helpful. Second, if you use hair color, make sure your stylist

writes down your formula in detail, and include their name and contact information. Should your new operator wish to ask any questions, your former Brian K. Whitehead stylist will likely be more Managing Partner than happy to answer any The Village Salon questions regarding your hair color. The Village Salon Next, after your final 222 Village Square haircut with your soon-to-be in Tellico Village former stylist, take several 865-458-9332 pictures of your hair from a thevillagesalon@aol.com number of different angles. These photos of your fresh haircut will be much more helpful than your new operator getting a look at a six week old haircut. Bear in mind that your new stylist in your new town will not have the years of experience or the intimacy of the relationship with your irreplaceable stylist of the past. Those things take time to develop, and it is only human nature that you would compare the two, even though a comparison in the first several visits is totally unfair to your new operator. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask around your new community’s bridge club, golf league, or dinner parties for referrals. In my experience, this is the single best form of advertisement that a successful stylist could ever have. Good luck if you find yourself moving out, and best of luck to those who are moving in.

Make Every Day Father’s Day with a Custom Garage

t’s almost Father’s Day, the day we celebrate dads. One day a year just isn’t enough to let your dad know how important he is to you, so give him something that will remind him of how much he means every day of the year. A custom garage design from PremierGarage of Knoxville will put a smile on his face that never goes away. The perfect garage will be different for every dad. A custom garage design can transform the family garage into his own personal kingdom, whatever your dad’s passion.

The Car Lover

Dads who love cars and motorcycles like to park them indoors. Garage cabinets, made just for the weather

extremes in the garage, and PremierGarage’s floor coating will turn any garage into a showplace. The space stays clean, and the cabinets eliminate clutter so that his vehicles are the key feature in the garage. Supplies and tools for working on and shining up his “toys” are easily reached when the garage is organized.

The Craftsman

For the handyman or craftsman who likes working with his hands, custom storage cabinets, countertops, and drawers organize tools and supplies. Refinishing furniture or household repairs are easier with slatwall panels above the work countertops to keep tools within arm’s reach for easy use. Upper cabinets can keep paints, glue, varnish,

and other items out of kids’ reach. Optional locks for cabinets and drawers add extra security where needed, and LED lighting under the cabinets will conveniently light up the workspace.

The Sports Enthusiast

For the sportsman, keeping sports equipment organized is important. Wall hanging systems like slatwall panels with attachable accessories can handle large and small items for any sport. Specialty hooks will hold bikes, golf bags, skis, skateboards, and more. A combination of garage storage cabinets and wall hanging systems can eliminate floor clutter, keeping balls, bats, mitts, and hats stored safely away so they’re available whenever it’s game time. No matter your dad’s hobby, a custom PremierGarage floor is the perfect foundation for any garage. With several colors to choose from, it transforms oil-stained, pitted concrete into an easy-care, highly functional space that can withstand whatever dad can dish out. The industrial-grade hybrid polymer blend epoxy floor coating goes on twice as thick as other floor coatings and creates a permanent chemical bond with the concrete. The finish is resistant to spills, including gasoline, acetone, brake and transmission fluid, and other common garage products. Help create a Father’s Day gift that every time dad walks into the garage, he’ll think, “Wow, what a Father’s Day!” Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

The gates at 10,000 Lake Hardeman Road will be open to all from 10 am to 2 pm to enjoy a free fishing day at the main lake. A fun event for the whole family, the First Annual Community Open House at Lone Oaks Farm is an opportunity to spend the day enjoying the 1,200 acre property full of pastures, woodlands, and lakes. “Bring your own lawn chairs, canopy tents, fishing poles, bait, and a big smile,” said Scott Cagle, Director of Lone Oaks Farm. “We really want folks in the surrounding communities to come and enjoy a fun day with us. This is an amazing place.” Operated by University of Tennessee Extension, Lone Oaks Farm is a working farm and 4-H youth development and conference center in Middleton, Tennessee.

The farm currently hosts 4-H camps, field trips, and STEM education programs. Future plans for the development of Lone Oaks Farm include the construction of a 4-H STEM and Farm Center, a 4-H camp facility, a shotgun clay target shooting complex, a hospitality complex, and an adult leadership center. Barbecue sandwiches, chips, drinks, and desserts will be available for purchase, and games will be set up for kids to enjoy as well. Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency officers will be on site to answer questions about fish populations, techniques, and more. A fishing license will not be required on this day. University of Tennessee Extension is excited to partner with TWRA, the Grand Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Middleton Fire Department, and the Women’s Auxiliary for Middleton Fire Department to make this event possible. A Clean Answer to Our Prayer

12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2019

By Christina Fitzwilliam

I

want to share with you one of our family’s biggest GOD stories. Whenever we wonder momentarily if we are walking out God’s plan in this business, we simply remind ourselves how it all started. It was the beginning of September 2008. My husband, John, was managing a local restaurant, working nights, weekends, and holidays. Meanwhile, I was home raising three children, feeling like a single mom to our teenager, our 6-year-old daughter, and our 4-year-old son, who is on the autism spectrum. To be honest, I was a bit overwhelmed and prayed John could have a different career. I ran across some cleaning videos online by a company out west that seemed a bit too incredible to be genuine. I watched every single video I could find. I was truly fascinated by the equipment, so when John got home, I showed him. He was equally impressed and called the company. They offered to fly us out to see the equipment firsthand that weekend. John rarely had two consecutive days off at the restaurant, so we thought there was NO way he could get time off with just a few days’ notice. Miraculously, they gave him FIVE days off with no questions asked. We flew to Arizona, fell in love with the equipment, and really WANTED to bring it back to Knoxville. But with the recession that year, our meager savings, and living on one income, we just didn’t see how that could be possible. Feeling defeated, on the airplane trip back home, we prayed, “Lord,

we’d love to do this, but we don’t see how it’s possible. If this is in Your plan, we need a BIG SIGN. Amen.” The next morning, as John was going through the mail, he unbound a license plate we’d been waiting on for several weeks. We’d purchased a van, and the plates were quite late. As he looked at the plate in disbelief, he turned them toward me and said, “Honey, here’s our sign.” Printed on the plate was the date we visited the company (September 8), as well as the name of the company (TMT, which stands for The Master’s Touch). John called the

restaurant immediately and gave his four-week notice. It may not be a glamorous calling, but we know that cleaning to the best of our ability, with the tools that God provided for us, is part of His great plan for our family. We at Surface Doc just want to say thank you, Knoxville, and God bless!

riends of the Smokies has opened registration for the 2019 Classic Hikes of the Smokies “Overnight Experience,” which will take place on June 25-26 in Gatlinburg, TN. Day one of this special event features a guided experience of the Twin Creeks area of the Smokies, home to exciting and diverse park treasures like the Twin Creeks Science Center and Ogle Homestead, and an easy afternoon hike. Day two offers a choice between two guided hikes, one moderate and one strenuous. The first, a 5.4 mile hike, will highlight the recently completed restoration work of the highly-skilled Trails Forever crew and end at stunning Rainbow Falls. The second guided hike will combine three trails for a 15-mile adventure across the southern exposures of Roundtop and Little Roundtop Mountains to a section of the Smokies that few visitors ever experience. Participants will be treated to a surprise guest who will speak about the current state of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Lodging and meals are provided at The Buckhorn, East Tennessee’s classic country inn, which features stunning views of Mt. Le Conte. Since 1993, Friends of the Smokies has helped fund

critical projects and programs in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, like environmental education for schoolchildren, trail rehabilitation, and protection against invasive species. The proceeds from the Gatlinburg Overnight Experience will further these efforts by supporting suppression of the hemlock woolly adelgid infestation using a multipronged approach, including treatment of 30,000 trees and the release of 570,000 biological control beetles. The overnight experience will also raise money for the park to treat trees in high-use areas that are at risk of the emerald ash borer, another invasive species. The cost to attend is $300 per person. Those who register should be prepared to hike at least six miles and climb more than 1,500 feet on challenging terrain. For more information and to register, visit www.hike. friendsofthesmokies.org. Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised more than $65 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Smokies License Plates Pass New Milestone in Tennessee and North Carolina

T

wenty years after the launch of the program, drivers in Tennessee and North Carolina have raised more than $15 million in support of Friends of the Smokies through specialty license plate sales. The iconic black bear is depicted on both states’ plates and contributes to their popularity on both sides of the mountains. The Tennessee Smokies plate underwent a multi-year redesign and hit the roads in winter 2018. It features a silhouette of a black bear against the original orange and purple sunset design. Less than six months later, sales increased by 30% over the same time in the previous year. A black bear was added to the North Carolina Smokies plate in 2007, and sales have seen a steady increase since then, placing the Smokies plate among the most popular in the state with representation in all 100 counties. “It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to the banks of the mighty Mississippi, there are generous people who support this national park

with our specialty license plates,” said Tim Chandler, Executive Director and COO of Friends of the Smokies. “These plates provide meaningful and dependable support for the critical projects we fund in the Smokies.” Both specialty plates fund a variety of projects and programs in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, including those related to the park’s black bear population. Last year the plates also provided support for a new Preventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) program, a coordinated volunteer effort to provide valuable information to hikers at trailheads about trail safety, trail difficulty, and proper preparation before beginning a hike. “We are heading into another busy year for the

Smokies,” said Chase Pickering, Friends of the Smokies board member. “Visitation was at an alltime high last year, and that trend looks like it’s going to continue for 2019. It’s amazing to think you can do something as simple as getting a license plate to support your national park. Having a bear on the plate is just a bonus.” The North Carolina Smokies plate was designed by Micah McLure. The Tennessee Smokies plate was designed by Kristin Williams. For more information or to get a plate, visit www.BearPlate.org or stop by your local Tennessee County Clerk’s Office or North Carolina Vehicle and License Plate Office. Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised $65 million to support critical park programs in North Carolina and Tennessee. Shepherd of the Lake Celebrates Its Five-Year Anniversary

GOD’S WORK – OUR HANDS Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran ChurCh ... SHARING GOD’S LOVE WITH THE WORLD

Worship with Holy Communion Sundays at 9 am 143 Chota Center, Loudon, TN

DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM TELLICO VILLAGE POA

O

n Pentecost Sunday, June 9th, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church in Tellico Village will celebrate its fifth anniversary as a fully chartered congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). At a time when many traditional churches are struggling, this one is growing. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran began living out its mission statement as “A Christian Community Sharing God’s Love with the World” in 2007 in Lakeside Plaza in Tellico Village as a satellite campus of Faith Lutheran Church in Knoxville. The worshiping community moved to its current location in Chota Center across from the POA in April 2009. In June 2014, Shepherd of the Lake was welcomed into the ELCA. The congregation is active, compassionate, and supportive, focused on sharing God’s love with others through fellowship and outreach to friends, neighbors, others in Tellico Village, the surrounding community, the nation, and the world. It’s a place where all are welcome. With compassion and a commitment to serve, this congregation actively gives. “Our focus is on God’s work. Our hands,” said Ingrid Schalk, Shepherd of the Lake Pastor. “We use our time, talents, and treasures to support each other and those in need. In recent years, we were involved in our first Habitat for Humanity home build in Loudon County in partnership with Community Church of Tellico Village. We volunteer regularly at The Good Shepherd Center in Madisonville, Kiddie Kingdom in Lenoir City and Philadelphia, and University of Tennessee campus ministry. We have also funded the construction of seven wells in Ethiopia and Uganda and a water filtration system for a school in Nepal. We also serve within our own congregation, assisting ministers, choir members, altar guild, lectors, ushers, and greeters. There’s something for everyone.” A traditional service with holy communion is held on Sundays at 9 am, with multiple bible studies ongoing throughout the week. Men’s Fellowship and Ladies of the Lake meet monthly with additional group activities, including card making, movie night, and knitting, quilting, and crocheting. As a member of the ELCA, Shepherd of the Lake shares a living, daring confidence in God’s grace. Liberated by faith, the ELCA embraces individuals as a whole person – questions, complexities, and all. With four million members who actively participate in God’s work in the world, ELCA members believe they are freed in Christ to serve and love its neighbor. It is a church that belongs to Christ, and everyone is welcome. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church 143 Chota Center Loudon, TN 37774 865-816-4756 admin@ shepherdofthelaketn.org

TVA Grant Funds Park Programs for Boys & Girls Club

F

riends of the Smokies has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to fund summer programs in Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) for urban youth in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley. Funds provided by TVA will pay transportation expenses for elementary aged students in Knoxville to visit GSMNP this summer. These summer programs and activities will expose young people to the natural wonders of the Great Smoky Mountains, including science and social studies education initiatives that reinforce Tennessee school curricula. Park Rangers will go on-site to the Boys & Girls Clubs to present fun, hands-on activities that help the children become comfortable with the rangers and begin learning about the park’s natural ecosystems. The program also provides a summer day camp experience with one-day in-park field trips to learn about the cultural history of the area and the park’s natural biodiversity. Most of the students participating in this program are from Title I schools, which include students near or below the poverty level, qualifying for the free or reduced lunch program, and are at the most risk of failure. Their participation in the program will be at no cost to them or their families. Friends of the Smokies anticipates reaching more than 1,500 students through the summer program for urban youth in 2019. “We are excited to fund this summer education program in the Smokies again this year,” said Tim Chandler, Friends of the Smokies Executive Director & CEO. “These kids are the next generation of park users and stewards, so we will jump at any chance we have to reach them and introduce them to the wonders of the natural world in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.” Friends of the Smokies will provide an additional $5,000 towards the program through proceeds from its specialty license plate program in Tennessee. For an additional $35 annual fee, drivers all across Tennessee can support programs like this with a specialty license plate featuring a black bear and sunset over the Great Smoky Mountains. Learn more at www.BearPlate.org or visit your local county clerk’s office. Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised $65 million to support critical park programs and maintain the Smokies as a crown jewel of the National Park Service. Stu Cook

E

ast Tennesseans are more than familiar with the iconic band from the 60s and early 70s, Creedence Clearwater revival. Their music catalog includes Proud Mary, Who’ll Stop the Rain, and many other songs that occupy the soundtrack of baby boomers’ youth. They were veterans of Woodstock and other huge festivals of 1969. Wikipedia states that, just in the U.S., they’ve sold 28 million records. All of this led up to their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 – 21 years after the band broke up on pursued years of litigation between Stu Cook and Doug Clifford and their lead singer/guitarist, John Fogerty. For more than 26, Stu and Doug toured as Creedence Clearwater Revisited (the gem of one of the post-breakup lawsuits), bringing back musical memories to long-time fans and new fans alike. That is, until their recent announcement that they are retiring from the road after this year. That news came on the heels of a re-hashed announcement that Stu and Doug have settled their pending lawsuits with John Fogerty. I reached out to Stu to have my second interview with him to chat about these announcements. When I called Stu at his home, we caught up on news and small talk before I mentioned the retirement announcement and asked if East Tennessee was going to wind up being on their itinerary. “No, we don’t play in East Tennessee,” he said. “We haven’t been in East Tennessee in quite a while. We never know where we’re going. We have virtually no say in it. The offers come in, and our booking agency, William Morris, and our management try to figure out – they put the dart board on the wall then they decide: ‘Which dates they can possibly make it from A to B to C without killing themselves?’ We call it ‘No heroics,’ ha ha! If we can’t get there safely overnight, we probably shouldn’t take the gig.” Later in our conversation, when we chatted about the “Revisited” incarnation of CCR, Stu indicated, “Twenty-five. This is year 25 of ‘Revisited.’ Who knew that it would go on like that? At the end of last year, we said, ‘The playing is as great as ever. The audience is as great as ever. And, of course, the music is supreme for us. The road is just not much fun.’ Twenty-five straight years of straight… you know, most bands take a break. Most artists tour behind product – new product or recent product. We’re touring on our legacy. We do it every year, but when you start going back to the same place multiple times and it wasn’t your favorite place to begin with, the travel has really gotten unromantic. “We’re not retiring from the music business, as such, or from music, or from being CCR, or even Creedence

Clearwater Revisited. We’re just taking a break from the road which, at our age, this will likely be the last year of regular revisited appearances anywhere.” We then segued into the subjects of the litigation settlement and the retirement announcement. Why this? Why now? “Well, the settlement actually occurred a couple of years ago,” he said. “The settlement I refer to is our most recent legal battle. It started at the end of 2014 and then went through 2015 and 2016. I think we settled at the beginning of 2017. It really had no connection at all that I can call on or pull down and attach to our decision to get off the road. But, that said, to your question as to what it feels like, what our settlement looks like: At this point, it’s just a business arrangement, but it’s far more than we ever had in the last 45 years. We have a company together, and we hope to do some interesting things with it. “In the meantime, other projects have been in the wings and are now about to take stage. I believe that Creedence’s full performance, the quartet’s first and full performance at Royal Albert Hall, is going to be released.

It’s a DVD. Coming up also I believe this year, because this is the 50th anniversary, of course, of Woodstock. We’re trying to get together a complete set to be released on DVD as well. We weren’t in the movie. Hopefully people will be able to judge for themselves how good that performance was. I think it was one of the best of the event. A journeyman set under any circumstances, but Woodstock was not your normal circumstance.” Organize a group to travel where CCR is playing this year. Visit www.Creedence-Revisited.com, purchase tickets, and plan a trip to catch this iconic act one last time. Visit www.boomerocity.com to read what else Stu had to say about the lawsuits, Woodstock, and advice to new talent. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

No Warm Weather Pests Here… We Called Dayton’s!

18A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2019

No Mosquitoes, Carpenter Bees, Ants, or Other Warm Weather Pests We called Dayton’s!

M

osquitoes: Your pets are playing and birds are chirping, all while you’re NOT being bitten by mosquitoes! Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program uses a treatment process that kills these irritating, disease-carrying pests and helps prevent their eggs from becoming biting adults. Mosquito breeding sites lurk in many unseen places, so Dayton’s thorough approach includes mosquito resting areas, landscaping, vegetation, trees, shrubs, standing water, ponds, and waterscapes. Plus this treatment will not harm your pets, garden, or landscape. Carpenter bees: Talented at drilling perfectly round holes, carpenter bees will just drill another hole if you plug one up. Dayton’s treats the source of carpenter bees, which is the chambers they build inside wood areas around your house for laying eggs. Some of their favorite places to drill are on wooden porches and roof eaves. Ants: The key to getting rid of ants is to treat the source, which is often outside, underground, and requires a pest professional to find. Wasps/yellow jackets: Let Dayton’s take the risk of getting rid of a nest, NOT YOU! New customers will receive 1) $25 OFF the initial service for Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with a contract through October and 2) $25 OFF one treatment for warm weather pests with an annual pest agreement. Other services include monthly/quarterly/one-time pest control services, convenient quarterly perimeter pest control, pest control for ladybugs/bedbugs/other pests, fungicide/moldicide treatments, VA/FHA inspections, CleanSpace® Crawl Space Encapsulation System, and radon testing/mitigation. What Will the Markets Do When You Retire?

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

magine the markets decline 15% on your first day of retirement! Your $500,000 nest egg is now worth $440,000. You will need an almost 18% rebound to recover. What if the opposite were true? The markets increase 15%. Your $500,000 is now worth $560,000. In retirement, you can do everything right – you save diligently, work with a fiduciary advisor, focus on low fees and tax efficiency – but market corrections early in your retirement years can dramatically alter the ability of your money to last your lifetime. Called Sequence of Returns investment risk, it’s the luck of the draw and can devastate your best laid plans. Few investment professionals talk about or even understand it.

For example: John and Sue retire at age 65 with $500,000 in identical balanced portfolios and plan to withdraw $25,000 annually, adjusted for 3% inflation. John retires as the markets go down. He averages an 8% return but runs out of money by age 83. Sue retires in a market rally. She averages the same 8%, with her corrections coming in later years. Her portfolio at age 90 is $1.6 million. Why the disparity? Markets don’t give averages; they give you actual returns that work out to an average. The order in which you earn that average matters! What’s a retiree to do? Work with a fiduciary to structure your investments according to time and purpose. Invest conservatively for assets needed earlier. Invest for growth with assets needed later. Typically advisors simply invest by account type: IRAs one way and brokerage accounts another way. This simply does not mitigate Sequencing Risk.

Secondly, have enough guaranteed income to meet your basic needs. This gives you the flexibility to wait out a down market. If Social Security isn’t enough to do that and you don’t have a pension, create your own pension annuity with a highly rated insurance company. Many new income opportunities exist today that didn’t exist 10 years ago. Your early retirement years define your later retirement years – all due to the unknowable Sequence of Returns risk. Take the steps today to protect your tomorrow. Give us a call to learn more. remiere Consignment is a great place to save up to 90% off the original prices on top brand name furniture, home décor items, art, and Oriental rugs, but did you know that it is also a great way to repurpose household items that you may no longer need? Whether the result of a recent move, downsizing, remodeling, redecorating, updating, or new empty nesters, many of us have accumulated items that we may no longer need that can easily be turned into cash by consigning them for resale at Premiere Consignment, conveniently located in Tellico Village. Premiere Consignment is your premier choice for reselling furnishings, home décor and art items, and Oriental rugs that you may no longer use. “Tellico Village is an ideal location for Premiere Consignment,” said Aaron Hunt, co-owner. “We receive most of our consigned merchandise from Tellico Village and surrounding upscale lake and golf front communities, including Rarity Bay; therefore, we are able to offer our customers a great selection of quality, brand name items at incredible savings.” What is as equally important is the opportunity that Premiere Consignment offers its consignors.

“We offer consignors three unique opportunities to resell their consigned items,” said Aaron. “By combining our in-store showroom, high-profile eBay presence, and on-site estate sales, our clients have the best of all worlds representing the very best opportunity to resell their consigned items. Our retail store offers customers the same opportunity to browse through our current selection of furniture, home décor items, art, and rugs that conventional furniture showrooms display but at a significant savings. Tellico Players Produce Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie

O

In this early rehearsal photo, the players are looking at “the moon coming up over Garfinkel’s Delicatessen.” From L to R: Harrison Huegen, Freddi Birdwell, Lisa Silverman, and Jordan Phillips.

ne of the most famous plays of the modern theatre, The Glass Menagerie has been described as a drama of great tenderness, charm, and beauty. In its initial opening in Chicago in 1944, the play was not expected to last long, but the critics loved it and gave it rave reviews. When it opened in New York in 1945, the cast received an unbeatable 25 curtain calls. The play is introduced to the audience by Tom, the narrator and protagonist, as a play based on memory. Tom cautions the audience that what they see may not be precisely what happened. Amanda Wingfield, a faded Southern Belle of middle age, shares a dingy St. Louis apartment with her son, Tom, and his slightly older sister, Laura. In The Glass Menagerie, the themes of illusions and impossible dreams offer an escape from reality, but they cannot be sustained. The past informs the present, and the possibility of escaping the past is only an illusion. The cast includes Amanda Wingfield played by Freddi Birdwell, Tom Wingfield played by Jordan Phillips, Laura Wingfield played by Lisa Silverman, and Jim O’Connor played by Harrison Huegen. James Fisher is directing, and Len Willis is producing. Dates for this third Tellico Community Players performance of 2019 are Thursday through Saturday, June 13-15, and Thursday through Sunday, June 20-23. All shows begin at 7:30 pm except for the matinee on Sunday, June 23, which begins at 1:30 pm. Reserved seats are $21 and are on sale on the Tellico Community Players website, www.TellicoCommunityPlayhouse.org.

Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c. “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.” “Our decision to build our first house on the lake took us to many areas of the United States. Then we discovered Tellico Village. It had everything we wanted in our new retirement area. We found and purchased a lot. We also found a builder, Kit Keener. Our only experience with building a new home was in a retirement community in Texas. There our choices were basically pick a model, level of cabinets, floors, and counters. Even that seemed stressful at the time. Was building this house from scratch stressful? A thousand times YES! But we were very thankful that we were working with Kit. He gave us good guidance on many issues. One specific issue was the way the house would be positioned on the lot. After he thought about the situation, he came up with a plan to place garages on the opposite side of the house. He said that would save a lot of money over our original plan. We had never considered that option, and it made no difference to us which side the garages were on. We did that, and it did save us money. Did we have some instances of discussion? Of course, but throughout the entire process, Kit was honest, attentive, and we were able to come to a win-win for everyone. We relied heavily on Kit’s many years of building experience and ended up with a house we love. Kit and his company have been here longer than most any another builder. Several have come and gone. He doesn’t overextend his building capacity and is focused on building quality, not quantity. We could have not found a finer individual or company to build with.” – Bill & Joyce Denton

Mary

Oso

H

i, my name is Oso. I’m a three-year-old Jack Russell mix that weighs about 25 pounds. I live with a foster family, just a mom and dad. I tried to like young kids, but they move too fast and make me nervous, so if you decide to adopt me and have kids, they need to be older (over 10 at least) and be gentle with me. When new people come to visit, I usually end up in their laps. My foster home has several very large dogs (Great Pyrenees) and some smaller Chihuahua dogs. The small dogs make me nervous, and I prefer the bigger ones; I like to wrestle and play with one of the younger females, and I even like their cat! When I’m home, I’m either in my dad’s lap or sitting as close to mom as I can get; she reaches down and scratches me a lot. I enjoy being outside and have turned into a true “squirrel-hound!” If there’s a squirrel out there, I’m going to try to get it. (I haven’t had any luck so far.) The cat stays inside, so I haven’t had a chance to chase her yet, but I bet it would be fun. I like to chew on elk antlers; they keep my teeth shiny and white, and my breath smells good. I eat well, mom always adds treats (canned food/scrambled eggs/cooked gizzards, or something else) to my kibble (Fromm). I trimmed down a bit when I got here by running more and eating well. I’ve worked hard on my house training, and my foster mom takes me outside frequently to help me. I love to snuggle in bed at night, and I’m learning about car rides. (They’re okay as long as they don’t end up at the groomer, who keeps me as handsome as can be.) I’m not wild about being groomed, but I like getting all soft and silky as I get

more attention! I’d love a good forever home... please call to meet me. Fuzzy, Stewie, and Mary are 15 year old siblings from the same indoor home. All are litter box proficient. Fuzzy is a medium-long hair Tabby… “a mad genius.” He learned very quickly how to open his cage door. That issue was fixed, so then he learned how to open the side compartment doors. He is quite the character. He’s very expressive and is a mumbler. When you are talking to him, he looks like he is hissing, but he’s sort of grinning. He also mumbles under his breath and will do some chattering. He likes to be held for a few moments but then wants to be in motion. He is a very busy boy! Stewie and Mary are both short hair, white and gray. They are having a bit of a difficult time adjusting to shelter life without their siblings, their human family, and their home. They are still in “shy mode.” We are looking for an understanding, patient adopter or a temporary foster home for both of them together. They are very bonded, and we won’t separate them. They need to get into a home environment as soon as possible so they can be relaxed cats again. They need a quiet bedroom where you can spend quality time with them multiple times per day until they are ready to roam the house. They need to feel loved and free again. Let your cat set the rules at first. Don’t be surprised if the cat hides in a box you have provided (a hiding spot) for several days. Stack up a bunch of pillows; he will burrow under them. As long as he has food, water, a litter box, and toys (ping pong balls), he will be okay. Chances

are when you are not in the room, he will be coming out to eat, use the litter box, or explore. Gradually increase your together time. Talk to your cat when you are in the safe room. You may want to sit on the floor or bed and read a book out loud but softly. Let him or her learn the sound of your voice. He’ll come around when he finally feels safe with you, but don’t rush it. Count your victories in small increments: The first time he peeks out at you from the hiding spot; the first time he plays with a wand toy with you; the first time he takes a treat you offer him. When he finally jumps up and settles in on your lap, you’ll know that he is now your cat and no longer a fearful cat. All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. There is a $50 adoption fee over one year old and $60 under one year old. Check out the MCFA Thrift Store run entirely by volunteers – clean, gently used items at great prices. It’s open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 3:30 pm and is located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). Like us on Facebook for up-to-date sale information. McKenry Receives National Closet Design Award

June, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

C

hris McKenry, Chief Organizing Officer of Closets by McKenry, is this year’s recipient of the Designer of the Year Award for Closets from the Interior Design Society. The announcement was made at the IDS Awards Gala in Palm Springs on May 4th. Presented by celebrity designers Carson Kressley and Thom Filicia, the award recognizes the creation McKenry did for the Master Closet in the 2018 Alzheimer’s Tennessee Designer Home and Garden Tour. “While it was a privilege to have been chosen to participate in the inaugural Home and Garden Tour, this national recognition for my closet design is truly humbling,” said Chris. This year the Interior Design Society had the largest ever number of submissions from across the county, and each award was chosen by a panel of 16 leaders in the interior design field. When asked about the specifics of this project, McKenry shared, “The homeowner’s needs were considered, as well as the craftsman style of the home. The footprint of the master closet totaled 175 square feet. In the closet, gray melamine with mission fronts complemented the master bath design. Antique mirrors were inserted into the doors above the custom dresser, which was topped with white quartz. “The entry is in her Lady’s Boutique and features an island with hamper and jewelry drawers under a white quartz top. Above hanging garment and shoe shelves are high cabinets available to store out-of-season items. “The smaller Gentleman’s Haberdashery contains open cabinets for his hanging garments with shoe storage and drawers and cabinets above for long-term storage behind doors. This area leads to the laundry, which is divided by an 8’ dark stained pocket door. For this reason, the entire system is 101” high and features base and thin top trim to not compete with the crown molding in the room.” Closets by McKenry was opened in 2015 after Chris returned to Knoxville after 15 years in Los Angeles, where he was a professional organizer. McKenry said that when he was in LA, he often found that new closets did not always meet the storage needs of the client. “I just love the beauty of an organized home, and my first step to design is a thorough assessment of needs,” he said, adding that the last step is the follow-up after installation.

2019 Symphony ShowHouse to Be Held at Regas Square Luxury Private Residences

T

he Knoxville Symphony League Designer ShowHouse will be held at Regas Square luxury private residences in June, with local designers putting their signature and full touches on four different units. The 2019 Symphony ShowHouse, which will take place June 12-30 in downtown Knoxville, will include more than 7,000 square feet of decorated spaces on the sixth floor of the building. Four Knoxville designers each have taken a residential unit to decorate in the completely renovated Regas Square, which will open for public viewing for the first time since the project was announced in 2016. Of the four units to be designed, three already are owned, and one will be available for purchase. “The new Regas Square, on the site of the former Regas Restaurant, will showcase the work of four talented designers in four penthouse-level condominiums,” said Joyce Simms, advisory chairman for the event. “We can hardly wait to see each designer’s vision of luxurious urban living come to fruition.” The Regas Square luxury condominiums, located at 333 W. Depot Avenue, blend classic and contemporary features with thoughtful, modern design. The six-story midrise offers 101 residential units atop ground-floor retail spaces. The building features large terraces for each unit, private parking and storage, fitness center, and indoor and outdoor entertainment lounges. “It’s such an honor to get to showcase our residences through the Knoxville Symphony League’s signature ShowHouse event,” said Joe Petre, owner and agent with Conversion Properties Inc., which developed Regas Square. “It’s a great way to support the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and local designers while sharing our beautiful new downtown building with the community.”

I

The Symphony ShowHouse, now in its 32nd year, will be open for public tours every day except Monday. Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday from 1 to 5 pm. Day passes are $20, and season passes are $30. Proceeds benefit the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra’s Education and Community programs. Private and corporate event space will be available in the building’s community clubhouse and spacious outdoor terrace for parties and special events. Contact Private/ Corporate Party Chairman, Robin Smith, at emailrobin@ juno.com to book an event. A Symphony ShowHouse Gift Shop, which will offer a variety of gift and home décor items for purchase, also will be set up in one of the decorated units.

The Wrinkled Shirt in Your Closet Has Something to Say

f your closet is too crowded and disorganized, you probably have several blouses or shirts that you never see because they are crammed in the corner or laying on the floor underneath other clothes. Well, if that shirt could write you a letter, this is probably what it would write: I am really a nice looking shirt. I fit you well. You used to love me, and you wore me to some of your most important meetings or dinner with friends. We looked so beautiful together.

However, as time went by, I wasn’t the center of attention. I was pushed further and further back in your closet. I am feeling unloved and disrespected. You never look at me because you can’t see me! It’s dark and cramped back in the corner. And yes, I know I’m wrinkled, but you would be too if you were living in this crowded space where the other hangers are constantly stabbing me. You are to blame for my condition. If you just took the time to give me – and yourself – a new, organized closet system, we could both be happy. I can just see a new

custom closet where I have glorious space to be my best self. I wouldn’t be a wrinkled mess, and you would love me again. Please call Tailored Living of Knoxville and set up a free consultation. They can design a new closet and show you a 3D rendering of the design so you’ll know exactly where I will be placed. The sooner you call, the sooner you and I can be together again! P.S. A pair of your sandals and a pair of great fitting black pants feel the same way. If you are wasting time every morning trying to find missing clothing items, you didn’t need your shirt to tell you that you need a new, organized closet system. From the closet to the family mudroom, and from the garage to a home office, Tailored Living of Knoxville can help organize every room in the home. Tailored Living is known for its innovative and affordable in-home storage solutions. A custom design starts with an in-home consultation with a space-planning expert who listens, offers experienced advice, and discusses solutions to your needs that meet your budget. Then, using their proprietary 3D software, Tailored Living designs each space while at your home. You’ll see the finished project before it begins! Do take your shirt’s advice to call Tailored Living for a free consultation. Tailored Living can help you love your clothes again. June

S

in the Garden by

Lisa Grugin

ummer is in the air! It has certainly felt like it this week at least. We jumped straight from 40 degree lows to 95 degree highs, and that is hard on everyone. It is also hard on your plants, and you may have noticed some wilting on things that would normally be able to take the heat. That is because the plants do not have a strong enough root system established yet to supply the leaves that are losing water through evaporation. Don’t panic. Give them time to adapt. You won’t know what is struggling in your yard unless you go out and look, however. I know it is hot and you really just want to sit in the comfort of your AC, but you need to walk around and take a good look at everything at least once a week. The mild, wet winter didn’t do us any favors when it comes to diseases and insects. The abrupt leap into summer weather has made the plants even more vulnerable by causing them stress. Again, don’t panic. Treat what needs to be treated, and let Mother Nature do her magic on the other things. Call us if you need help. Let’s spend some time talking about perennials since June is Perennial Month. Here are some basics: » What is a perennial? A perennial is a plant that comes back year after year. That does not mean they will live forever! Some only live for a few years, while others can live for decades. » Each has its own list of needs and wants. These can range from shady and wet to sunny and bone dry. Please remember that it is critical to work with the characteristics of the plant instead of plopping it down somewhere and expecting it to adapt. It won’t, and you will be mad/sad. » It takes some perennials a little while to get going. They may sit there for the first year or so and not do much, then take off in year three. Others may spread so prolifically that they need to be divided every three to five years. A couple can try to take over the world! Again, each has specific behaviors that you will need to work with.

JUNE IS

PERENNIAL MONTH

LOOK FOR SAVINGS ALL MONTH LONG

VISIT OUR FACEBOOK PAGE » If you put them into good soil, most don’t need fertilizer. » Most can be moved if they (or you) are unhappy with their location. There are a couple that hate to be moved, however, so always do your research. » There are some perennials that are toxic to animals and humans, so ask us about them if you have a dog/cat/small child that likes to chew on plants. » Several of our perennials are attractive to pollinators. We keep lists of plants to attract bees, butterflies and birds, and we really need you to plant some! » Most perennials only have a four to six week bloom time, so I think it is best to plan for the transitions. Plant perennials that bloom in each season so you will have color from spring through fall. We continue to get fresh plants in, so stop by and see what is blooming that you can add to your garden! Now I’m going to jump from perennials to vegetables, because some of you with veggie gardens are having a rough time this year. There are all sorts of nasty little creatures that are coming after your plants. Fungus, wilt, blight, leaf spot, and root rot are appearing. Beetles and worms can decimate your plants overnight. I have a few

suggestions: 1. Never use overhead irrigation. Water at soil level, and use mulch of some sort to prevent splashing. 2. Diatomaceous Earth will keep all sorts of crawly things away from your plants and is non-toxic. 3. If your soil is terrible, consider raised beds or container gardens. It is easier to manipulate the soil conditions in these. 4. Don’t underestimate the mature size of your plants. I often see customers put three tomato plants in an area that can only support one. Crowding decreases air circulation leading to fungal disease and insect infestations. It also causes the plants to have to compete for nutrients and water. Give them more room than you think they will need. I want to finish up by talking a little about planting. We have had a couple of customers that were panicking because they didn’t have all their planting done.

Relax! I haven’t done all of mine either! You can still plant throughout the summer, but you have to be a little more careful and do more plant babying. Water is the most important element of plant success, and sprinklers are inadequate for getting trees and shrubs established. You will need to supplement with hand watering or drip irrigation. I recommend a root stimulator to get those baby feeder roots down, but don’t be too generous with other fertilizers. Water and good nutrients in the form of amended soil are the best things to provide. That is all I have for this month. Stop by and see what is new! Organization Hacks for an Easy Cooking Experience

hether you’re an expert chef or a novice in the kitchen, it’s good to have organization hacks on hand for an easy cooking experience. With planning and space management, you can make cooking at home quicker, easier, and more enjoyable.

Create a weekly menu

Plan your menu in advance so you can get the ingredients needed on your weekly shopping trip. With everything on hand, you won’t be scrambling to run to the store

or skip cooking altogether. Keep extras of your favorite menu ingredients in your pantry so you can make an impromptu meal when necessary. Keep a running grocery list Hang it on the fridge or the pantry door, and add to it when you are running low on an ingredient. Buy in bulk when you can to stock up on supplies and save on items you use frequently. If time is an issue, order your groceries online and schedule a pick-up. Make everything easy to see and access Store pots and pans on glide-out shelving near your cooking station, organize your utensils with divided drawer inserts, and keep spices organized and visible with pull out racks or trays. Glide-out shelving in your pantry will keep all items in view so you can quickly grab what you need when cooking. Use counter space wisely Preserve counter space with an over-the-sink cutting board. Vegetable peels and other foods you’re slicing and dicing can be moved into the sink with ease and you’ll avoid the mess on your counter. This will also free up your counter for other cooking tasks. Label everything For easy access to spices, grains, and other ingredients, label them so you can quickly scan your cabinets or pantry and grab what you need. You can color code or buy different types of labels for various items to take the guesswork out of it. Store fresh ingredients properly Plan to buy fresh ingredients more frequently so they don’t spoil. Determine which items need to be refrigerated and which should be room temperature. Store fresh veggies and fruits in bins near your cooking station. Use an herb keeper to keep your favorite herbs fresh and flavorful. Determine what needs to be done in your kitchen so you can be more organized. Make a plan and stick to it. When everything is accessible, you’ll find cooking more enjoyable. o you have the desire to immerse yourself in an entertainment experience that rivals, and even exceeds, an IMAX theater or seats on the 50yard line for the biggest game of the season? Thanks to today’s cutting-edge technology, you can recreate these and other experiences, including streaming, gaming, and more. While there are a variety of home theater packages available for the do-it-yourselfer, these onesize-fits-all systems often do not measure up to all the hype. So just what are your options? The answer is simple. Lenoir City entrepreneur, Chris Limburg, offers homeowners wishing to recreate the true-tolife theater and sporting events experience the perfect solution for creating the ultimate in-home theater immersion. Propelling Audio Visual, first launched by Chris, combines his 25 years of experience in aviation electronics with his 20 years of experience as a computer engineer with his enthusiasm to recreate the true home theater experience designed to exceed his clients’ expectations.

“We customize each home theater system and media room to fit the individual lifestyle and budget of our clients,” said Chris. “We offer a true, turn-key experience, including sales, design, installation, and service.” Home theater enthusiasts also appreciate the fact that Propelling Audio Visual thoroughly researches each and every audio and visual component they sell to ensure you the performance and reliability you deserve. Propelling Audio Visual partners include JVC, Sony, Klipsch, Onkyo, Sonos, and SANUS, just to mention a few. For a more complete list, you can visit www.propellingaudiovisual.com.

If you’re tired of the lines at your local theater or the often rowdy fans at your favorite sporting events, replace the noise and the hassle with the true-to-life experience of owning your very own home theater or media room. Besides, the popcorn is fresher and the beverages cooler. Experience the ultimate in-home theater with Propelling Audio Visual. Propelling Audio Visual 423-745-4518 www.propellingaudiovisual.com

Since 1960, KARM has been devoted to helping restore lives in Jesus’ name by combining emergency rescue with positive, encouraging relationships. oo Knoxville has a new dining option for visitors located in Asian Trek with great views of Gibbon Trails and Langur Landing. The Beastro Café is now open featuring signature Asian-inspired menu items created by Executive Chef Richard Harris that includes the Asian Burger, Vietnamese Chicken Salad, Teriyaki Chicken Sandwich, a variety of stir fry options, and a selection of grab-and-go sandwiches and salads. With the opening of the Beastro, the zoo has expanded their commitment to sustainable operations and reducing plastic waste by using reusable plates and cutlery in the dining area and offering more beverages in recyclable aluminum cans. The opening of the Beastro completes the $18 millionBoyd Family Asian Trek expansion, and provides zoo guests the convenience of amenities on the east side of the park. Zoo Knoxville identified the need for expanded dining options as attendance continues to grow each year with a projection of welcoming more than 800,000 annual visitors by 2025. The Beastro is also an optional venue for private catered events after hours. Zoo Knoxville is a non-profit entity situated on 53 wooded acres just east of downtown Knoxville.
