Why Bring the Party Back Inside?

Volume 22, No. 6, Section A

June 2022

W

hen family and friends are outside enjoying a special event or just a time of relaxation, why be forced to bring your party back inside because of an unexpected afternoon shower or that relentless summertime sun? The solution is simple thanks to Undercover Systems. If your home has a raised deck, Undercover Systems will install a modular designed roof system under the underside of your deck. Their patented roof/ceiling system, consisting of individual ceiling panels and integrated gutters, collect rain water and melting snow or ice, channeling water and debris from the panels to the system’s perimeter gutters and downspout system. While protecting you from rain, this same ceiling system will also provide much needed shade during those “Dog Days” of summer. Homeowners appreciate the fact they can select from a variety of colors and panel profiles to create that showcase quality look that not only enhances their home’s exterior appearance, but also increases the value of their homes. “But be careful not to confuse Undercover Systems with the competition which uses generic, off-theshelf components purchased from the local

big-box retailers,” says local Undercover Systems owner, Jim Conn. “Every system we install is custom engineered, designed and manufactured by Undercover System specifically for your home’s raised deck. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here at Undercover Systems.” Here are some other important facts to consider when selecting an underdeck roofing system: » The Undercover System is self-supported by its structurally engineered load bearing gutter system that attaches to the inside perimeter of the area being covered. J

une ushers in the good old summertime in East Tennessee and temperatures have already been heating up. As a child growing up in Northern California, June meant the beginning of summer vacation and three months of freedom! Soon after school got out, we’d load up the trailer, hitch up the boat, and depart for one of the many beautiful camping locations around to enjoy God’s beauty – and get in some water-skiing. As soon as we’d make camp, and my chores were finished, I’d get on my bicycle and explore the area, basking in the cool mountain air and the gorgeous trees! I love trees! I guess that’s one of the reasons we choose East Tennessee to make our home. I get that same “Aaahhh” feeling when I explore the gorgeous cool wooded areas around Tellico Lake and the Smoky Mountains as I did as a child exploring the northern Sierras. June also marks the month in which we gather with family to celebrate Father’s Day. And although my dad has been gone now for a number of years, I still reflect back on memories of him when Father’s Day arrives. Memories of camping trips from Yosemite to Yellowstone, of going down the superslide, of accompanying him when he sang solos at church, of walking down the aisle with him at my wedding, of him insisting on fixing my sink for me on Thanksgiving, and so much more. Dad taught me a lot. He taught me to read, to always try my best, and about fixing things, just to name a few. He also taught me to love and revere The Lord. Even though he’s been gone for almost three decades, I still think about sharing things with him and asking his advice. I miss him. My dad was a hard worker, and he passed that strong work ethic on to me. He spent most of his working career working in education for the California Youth Authority, starting as a parole officer. He was a veteran, and was intelligent, dependable, responsible, honest, and patriotic. This Father’s Day is particularly special to our family, as this is also our only son’s first one as a father. Watching him dote on his precious little girl reminds me of watching my husband doting on our son at that age. Children learn from their parents and take on many of their traits. Seems so much of life comes full circle. I’m proud of the father I had. I’m proud of the father my husband is. And, I’m proud of the father my son is becoming. So, to all dads and to those who fill the role of dad, we wish you a very happy Father’s Day.

Don’t Let this Retirement Cost Sneak Up on You

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

just read a research report that said less than 15% of pre-retirees they surveyed have ever tried to estimate how much money they might need for health care and long-term care in retirement. The biggest barrier was that information available was “confusing, frustrating and overwhelming.” And to make it worse, less than 11% said they had a trusted resource to help them figure out how to cover health care costs in retirement. No wonder it ranks in the top 2 worries for retirees! People who have had the task of caregiving for an aging relative know it is challenging – both emotionally and physically, much less financially. They typically talk in terms of “I’ll never do that to my kids” or “I can’t believe my parents just assumed I could handle all of this”. You

get the picture. They wanted to be the care-coordinator, not the actual caregiver. If you’d like to avoid a similar fate for you and your family, here are a few simple steps to figure out if you’re ready for the health care unknown in retirement: 1. Go to www.genworth.com/aging-and-you/finances/ cost-of-care.html, where you can see exactly what care costs are in your county or zip code, and then use the slider bar to see what they are projected to be in 10, 20 or 30 years. This will give you costs for items Medicare doesn’t cover: home health care, assisted living and full-skilled care. 2. Think about your income sources and figure out the gap between the monthly costs from Step 1 and the amount of income you’d have available to put toward your care. If you’re married, consider that your spouse would still need to sustain their own lifestyle too. 3. Decide how you’re going to fill the gap in Step 2: with other invested assets, with a reverse mortgage, with traditional long term care insurance or with asset-based long term care insurance (my tax-free financial favorite). 4. Consider the tax-effect: if you’re going to use IRA money, add about 28% to the Genworth costs because

you’ll have to pay tax on the IRA withdrawals. Tax-free sources could include Roth IRA’s, and both traditional and asset-based long term care insurance. It’s important to answer these questions and make a plan. In the same research report, only 37% of respondents thought they would ever need long term care, yet statistically over 70% will, in fact, need some form of long-term care in their lifetime. That reality gap is huge. Let me help close it. Ask me a question through our website and I’ll be happy to answer. Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

We believe there is more than one way to prevent or treat disease and we offer alternative therapies such as Halotherapy (dry salt therapy for breathing conditions, skin and mental well-being), infrared heat sauna sessions, peptides, and a large selection of high-quality supplements such as Terry Naturally products, and many more. believeRX is very different from the “national chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being,

and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic! Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. Remember the old-fashioned pharmacies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those pharamicists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that it would be a step-up for them to treat people like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging that believeRX still believes

y wife Cheryl and I never planned to build a home mainly because we had heard some very sad stories from friends and family over the years. The stories ranged from general frustrations to all-out horror stories! Once we decided to build, we met with several local builders. The first thing we learned was that there is a big difference between a custom home builder and a tract home builder. We determined we needed a custom home builder so that we could have the flexibility to modify certain areas of our home. It became very clear that selecting Keener Homes would allow us that flexibility; we could be involved in the design and layout, as well as many ofwww.keenerhomes.net the construction| 865-458-1759 218 Lakeside Plaza, Loudon, TN 37774 details along the way. Working with the Keener Homes team was an absolute joy. The owner, Kit Keener told Cheryl and I in the beginning; “Enjoy the process” and we tried to do just that. Several folks at Keener Homes have also become what I hope to be lifelong friends which says a lot about how the process went. Especially since Covid had just started to pop its ugly head up, right about the time we started to build. We did see some material delays and some scheduling issues, but nothing that caused our build to go outside of the initial estimates. Even the suppliers they connected us with were very professional, honest, and trustworthy. Several of the suppliers made suggestions that allowed us to come in under budget, which ultimately allowed us to splurge on other areas like appliances, countertops, and cabinets. In the end, we have a home that we are thrilled with, proud to have friends and family visit and a home that we see ourselves in through the rest of our lives. I can say for certain that there are not too many areas in which another builder can outshine Keener Homes because we cannot imagine the process going any smoother than it did. Thank you, Kit, Dona, Krisha, Derek, and all the incredible partners you have developed throughout Southeastern Tennessee in the 30 plus years you have been building custom homes! We are forever grateful! Dave & Cheryl Byrne

Taking a Vacation?

O

ur lives are so busy throughout the year that when summer comes, we often think that it’s a time to relax from the duties, chores and humdrum of our everyday lives. Sometimes when we retire, we think of letting go of many of those activities that that occupied the time of our pre-retirement days. But can we retire from church or the fellowship of God’s people? Ever wonder why we sometimes feel that we’ve lost some of the joy that we felt in our busy days? Taking a walk, playing golf, or that extra cup of coffee on a Sunday morning loses its luster and we don’t know what happened to joy. Perhaps if we want to be filled with the power of heaven’s joy, then we need to turn to the Word of God for answers. 80 Years, 959 Months, 4171 Weeks, 29,200 Days, 700,800 hours, and 42,048,000 Minutes. This is the average lifespan of a person. There may be some more and less, but if you live to be 80 years old, these are the numbers of your life. How many years, months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes are we really HERE? Awake? Alive? Inhaling and exhaling this NOW moment? The HERE and NOW. It sounds simple – what’s so hard about being present? The problem is most of us don’t know how to do it. Many of us navigate through our lives on autopilot, unconsciously or habitually forming thoughts and judgments without knowing what we are doing, thinking, or feeling. We just react our way through our life. Our bodies may be here, but emotionally and spiritually we are not really here. We become disconnected from what is happening in our lives and run on autopilot. We live in “what was” or “what if” and forget to be here in the “what is now.” Your thoughts race at night. You think that one day your life will be better than it is now. You strive to fix that problem, lose that weight, get that job. You try to numb your thoughts with any kind of addiction. Your life feels unmanageable. Your life is boring. This is not how God created us to live. We will never experience the peace of God if we don’t dwell in the present with God. Psalm 46:1 says God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. While God is the same yesterday, today and forever, the only place to experience the presence of God is in the present with God. He is never not present; we are the ones missing from the present. How do we get there? Try attending a church of your choice on Sunday morning. You may just find that hearing God’s words in the fellowship with other seekers is your ticket back to the present. Your fellow travelers will help – Matthew 18:20 Where two or more are gathered in my name, there I am with them. Live now – it’s the only life we have. Loudon County Habitat for Humanity

Dedicates Another House O

The house on dedication day.

Rebeca Cisneros Parra, her husband, Jose, and one of their sons, Joaquin.

n Sunday, April 24th, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity dedicated its 120th new Habitat house. It was a beautiful, warm spring day for Loudon County Habitat’s first dedication of 2022. Family, friends, and many of the volunteers from house sponsor Concord United Methodist Church gathered with Rebeca Parra and her family to celebrate the completion of their new home. The property was donated to Loudon County Habitat by the City of Loudon. The house that was on the property was completely demolished and a new home built for Rebeca, her husband, Luis and five children. The ceremony included the pledge of allegiance led by Mayor Buddy Bradshaw, a blessing of the new Habitat home by Rev. Wil Cantrell, Senior Associate Pastor at Concord United Methodist Church, presentation of the keys to the house by Loudon City Vice Mayor Tim Dixon, and a new Bible was presented by Nedra Cook of Concord UMC. “We are so glad to be sharing this wonderful moment with Rebeca and her family,” said Cantrell. “Our members feel blessed to be part of this celebration.” “We are especially excited when we can take an existing property and renovate it for one of our families,” said Executive Director Tony Gibbons. “When we dedicate a new home, it helps us all see how much difference a home can make for a family, all made possible by our loyal supporters and sponsors.” Additional funds for this house came from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Cincinnati through SouthEast Bank. Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses. Habitat for Humanity 238 Hwy 70 W Lenoir City, TN 37771 865-458-0704 www.loudoncountyhabitat.org

Innovative Solutions for CHEO Invites You To: Your Kitchen Challenges Packing Your Pantry for

Y

ou may have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization, or access. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy. Issue #1—Deep or Narrow pantry shelves: Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping frequently used items up front can help. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier Issue #2—High overhead cabinets: If you have a high cabinet that is hard to reach, consider putting in vertical dividers to use this space to store flat items such as baking sheets and trays. You can reach each item at the bottom which makes access much easier. Issue #3—Blind corner cabinet: Some homeowners struggle with cabinets that extend back to a corner which makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50 percent and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4—Tricky space under the sink: The area under the sink is hard to reach and keep organized. A ShelfGenie under-sink Glide Out with a riser shelf is custom designed to your cabinet to avoid pipes, hoses, and the garbage disposal so it maximizes your usable space- and increases access. Issue #5—Hard-to-reach spaces: For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie Designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6—In-the-way trashcans: Keep your trash / recycling out of sight- but always within reach- with a Glide Out trash / recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution. To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary in-home consultation with a ShelfGenie Designer today.

Heritage Family Dentistry

“I Feel Just Like Family” “I first learned about Heritage Family Dentistry when I was a patient of Dr. Bradshaw at the University of Tennessee,” said Heidi Hodges. “I had stopped going to the dentist because of several past negative experiences. “I chipped a tooth when I was pregnant with my fourth child. I knew Dr. Bradshaw from my church, so I called him and he quickly took care of my chipped tooth. I was so happy with how he cared for me that I decided to follow him to his practice. “I was very apprehensive at first, but Dr. Bradshaw and his team fully explained treatment and procedure to me in detail. They have been very understanding of my fears. I now visit Heritage Family Dentistry every six months, and they feel just like family. “All of the people that work at Heritage Family Dental are wonderful. I have had cleanings, a filling, a crown, and currently have Invisalign.”

Invisalign is the latest and most advanced treatment for straightening teeth without metal braces. The clear aligners are almost undetectable by others, and some patients see visible results in as little as six months. “I would highly recommend Heritage Family Dentistry to everyone,” said Heidi. “My experiences have been great, and I am so thankful to have a dentist to go to where I am not fearful.” To learn more about Heritage Family Dentistry or to schedule a tour and no-obligation consultation, contact them at 865-816-9211 today. American Legion Veterans Preparing for Memorial Day

M

By James Patterson

emorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May, a day to honor members of the military who were killed in service, both during deployments overseas or in training. Across the country, Americans spend the day visiting cemeteries and attending Memorial Day events. First known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Each year, members of Post 256 place American flags at veteran graves in cemeteries throughout our local area. Placing them the week ahead of Memorial Day and retrieving them the week after. Post 256 services 15 cemeteries with a total of over 500 veteran’s graves. For additional information about the American Legion visit the Post 256 website: www. tellicolakepost256.org.

American Legion Post 256 members placed flags on veteran graves prior to Memorial Day: (LtoR) Dan Callan, Jim Warner, Steve Buelow, Richard Comiso, Marty Wright, Tony Adams, Bruce Blodgett, and Tom Simcox. Not pictured are other post members who will lead teams for placing of flags: Terry Boyer, Jim Patterson, Don Elliott, Robert Haldi, John Reiner.

Local Plumber Lives and Works by the Golden Rule Volume 22, No. 6

June 2022

“I started Tactical Plumbing to provide quality, affordable plumbing repair services to the local community. I worked for many companies in the past that put quantity over quality. At Tactical Plumbing we like to do the exact opposite - quality over quantity.”

“U

h oh! We’ve got a plumbing problem!” Scary words, to be sure. Who are we going to call that will return our call, come out, and do a good job? As contractors get busier and busier, it is getting harder and harder to find experienced people that show up on time and do the job well. Many plumbing problems require that the job be done really quickly! Recently, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views had the opportunity to interview Chris Flores, the owner of Tactical Plumbing, Inc. Launched in 2015, Tactical Plumbing is focused on doing a great job and treating their customers right. We are excited to bring you that interview with Chris Flores. MV: Tell our readers a little bit about yourself and why you started your plumbing business. Chris: I started Tactical Plumbing to provide quality, affordable plumbing repair services to the local community. I worked for many companies in the past that put quantity over quality. At Tactical Plumbing we like to do the exact opposite - quality over quantity. I have been in the plumbing industry since 2003. In 2011, I opened my first business, named Golden Rule Handyman Services, LLC, where we lived by the rule, “Treat others the way you want to be treated”. In 2015, I passed my plumbing exam and acquired my Florida Registered Plumbing License. I then changed the name of Golden Rule Handyman Services to Tactical Plumbing where we were still very focused on “The Golden Rule”. In 2021, I obtained my Florida Certified Plumbing License (the highest-level plumbing license in Florida). In addition, in March of 2022 I obtained my Tennessee LLP plumbing license. MV: What led you to move to Tennessee from Florida? Chris: My family and I left Florida and moved to Tennessee to follow God’s call for us to go into a ministry here. We are still searching for that ministry, but Tactical Plumbing will continue to serve the local community in Eastern Tennessee. MV: It sounds like missions and community service work are important to you. Chris: Missions work and helping people are very important to me. One of the main reasons I started Tactical Plumbing when I was in Florida was to help fund missions work. I also worked with Home Depot to benefit veterans in Jacksonville. MV: What are some of the most common plumbing jobs that you do? Chris: Our most common jobs involve drain cleaning, water heaters, fixture repair and replacement, water softeners, and bathroom and kitchen remodels. MV: What makes you different than other plumbers our readers might use? Chris: At Tactical Plumbing we don’t build clientele, we build relationships. We treat our customers like family. We want to make sure they feel respected and cared for. A lot of companies care more about how much money they make from customers and forget to take care of them and give great customer service. These companies also never get called back. I’d like to believe we do a good job at building relationships that will have customers calling us back. MV: Speaking of calling back, businesses are so busy today that customers may not get called back when they ask for an estimate or they don’t know when things are going to be done due to a lack of communication. How do you deal with those concerns?

Pictured from the bottom upwards: Makayla (daughter), Carleigh (wife), Tony (son), and Chris Flores.

want customers to be informed of all phases of the job from estimate to completion. MV: How would you describe your business philosophy? Chris: At Tactical Plumbing we build relationships, not just clientele. We do this with a Christ-centered approach while serving our customers with integrity and honesty. Serving you is our Ministry! MV: Anything else you would like to add? Chris: Yes. It’s important to note that, while in Florida, we earned great customer ratings on Facebook, Google, Angi.com, Home Advisor, and Yelp, etc. We love our customers! So, if you have plumbing needs arise and are looking for a company that strives to go above and beyond the normal service, contact Chris at Tactical Plumbing, Inc. and see his brand of extra service for yourself.

Chris: At Tactical Plumbing. we make it a point to promptly call, email, or text all customers back. We use a software that allows our customers to receive notifications when jobs are scheduled, started, or finished. We

ince the majority of our Tellico Village residents were not here during the early years of development, this month, we will celebrate Brian K. Whitehead both the old and the new. Managing Partner In 1992, our salons founder Miss The Village Salon Faye Whitehead, negotiated a longterm lease agreement with Cooper Communities that would ensure our ability to serve the Greater Tellico Village Community for many years to come. Well, after thirty years of doing business with Cooper we now have a new landlord. As many of you now know, Tellico Village POA has acquired The Village Square and is now our new landlord. Please allow me this opportunity to say how delighted we are to have entered into yet another long-term lease, this one with Tellico Village POA. Tellico Village POA has already shown a great commitment to making The Village Square the best version of itself possible, and we have been notified that there are projects already planned that will spruce up our thirty-year-old building. Special thanks to Winston Blazer and Beth Kuberka for making us feel appreciated and also for their efforts to make The Village Square the best that it can be. The Village Salon has proudly served this community since 1988 and remains the oldest and longest tenured privately owned business in all of Tellico Village. Thanks to our Tellico Village POA, we are now positioned for The Next Thirty Years.

Frame and Capture Your Financial Plans

C

an you remember the last time a photograph stopped you in your tracks? The moment the subject matter, framing, or simple lighting caught your attention and would not let go? Needless to say, such a photo is not easily made, and a truly striking picture is not simply the result of a point and click of the camera. To capture a good photo, one must have patience, vision, and clarity. Patience to wait and be prepared for the perfect moment to commit the camera. Vision to imagine, properly frame, and bring to fruition what you intend. And clarity to not only nail down the precise focus of the image, but to know what non-important elements to tone down, and what contrasts to play up so that the viewer’s eye zooms in immediately on the intended subject. The onset of the pandemic brought a lot of drastic changes to our everyday lives, many of them negative. But in pursuing a means to cope, I took up amateur photography, and these realities were brought home to me in a way I had not considered previously as I worked to discover and build on this brand-new skill and pastime. And in considering these things, I realized that pursuing patience, vision, and clarity are not at all unique to photography. In fact, these concepts are also inseparable from my work as a financial advisor. At Fairweather Financial, patience, vision, and clarity are key tools when advising each of our clients. As each photo is unique, tailored to perfectly-capture the circumstances of its subject, so also must each financial plan be uniquely fitted to the needs and goals of the client. For this reason, we adamantly believe one-size fits all policies are best left at the door. We strive to adjust our plans not only to fit your current situation, but to also provide a foundation for future growth. No matter where you are, it requires patience to commit to the next level, vision to take in the big picture, and clarity to see the individual steps in between. Just like framing the perfect picture, growing your wealth requires these qualities, and through them our time-tested investment strategies help you build long-term profitability through short-term planning. Allow us to help you and your family frame your financial goals, using the tried-and-true methods we know best, whether it be surrounding you with insurance policies suitable for both you and loved ones, or providing any number of our other services, from finalizing a will, to securing a medical or financial power of attorney. Fairweather Financial offers all-encompassing services for our clients, and our reputation thrives on our high-level customer satisfaction. So, enlist the expertise of your own Financial Advisor today, who is trained and licensed to assist you in mapping out and following your financial plan to circumvent tomorrow’s uncertainty. I invite you to call me today and set up your private, no cost or obligation consultation. In doing so, allow us to put our services at your disposal to properly frame and capture your financial goals as you aim for a better future for both you and your family.

Protecting Your Hearing – Preserve Your Memory and Focus By Connie Ferraro – Tellico Hearing Solutions

M

any of us are familiar with the simple phrase “If you don’t use it, you lose it.” This is true in so many settings, be it loss of physical fitness due to inactivity, or rustiness in certain neglected skills. Unfortunately, this reality also holds true for our cognitive function as we age. Interaction and socialization are key to keeping our minds sharp, and if hearing loss sets in, retaining those skills becomes increasingly difficult. A recent study among older adults found that cognitive abilities ranging from memory to focus and concentration declined faster in individuals with hearing loss, compared to those without. Effectively, hearing loss increases your risk of cognitive decline. If you need hearing aids, but put off getting them, you will be more tempted to withdraw from conversations due to the increased challenge of interacting in them properly. You may find yourself self-isolating out of frustration and embarrassment. But the consequences of doing so mean you don’t experience sufficient mental stimulation and social activity to keep sharp. According to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, patients with hearing loss on average wait 7 years before seeking treatment. During this time, hearing loss may affect cognitive function, leading to an irreversible decline. Furthermore, hear-

ing loss is often not detected or treated in people with a diagnosed cognitive impairment. The cognitive tests that are used when assessing possible dementia are affected by various factors, including sensory impairment. If a person is not able to hear the question that is being asked, he is obviously less likely to supply a correct answer. This becomes a problem when assessments are performed in environments with background noise, such as hospitals. So it would be possible to misdiagnose a person with normal cognition as having cognitive impairment. But here is the good news. Available evidence confirms hearing impairment is an independent and changeable risk factor for cognitive decline. In other words, it has been proven that hearing rehabilitation positively impacts elderly brain function, improving both attention and memory, and helping recuse behavioral symptoms of dementia. This is where we come in. Tellico Hearing Solutions was started so you could discover if a hearing device might help you, your spouse, or your family member recover lost hearing, and with it, aim to improve communication and increase quality of life. Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, embarked first as a hearing instrument wearer, and so is intimately familiar with the comprehension difficulties that accompany hearing loss. We use the latest technology to perform complete test-

ing and will provide you with a complete testing of your current hearing. If appropriate for your situation, we will equip you with the optimal hearing aid for you and your budget. Not only that, but we can provide assistive listening devices for use with your tv, phone, or audio equipment to help make your day-to-day activities easier and more enjoyable. Thanks to the new technology available, we can help you maximize your hearing recovery, and in so doing, help you retain and improve your mental fortitude. Much of our dayto-day function and personal safety is tied to our hearing, and many of us never realize it until we begin to experience its loss. If you or your family member is experiencing hearing loss, don’t wait to address it! Take it as a warning and come visit us right away. Better to get fitted for a hearing aid to take back your life, than to let it pass you by. Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation. Yes, it’s free, and it’s that easy. Experience the compassionate care that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Call us today and take the steps to take back your hearing, your focus, and your confidence moving forward. TRUST Your Comfy Chair!

Everyone needs a relaxing space. The place in your home you can instantly relax and rejuvenate. Whether that's a small reading nook to get away from it all, or a recliner in your home office, a comfortable chair is the foundation for feeling relaxed. When looking for upholstery there are many factors to consider, beyond the style and the color!

June 10 Little Italy 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM June 17 Sherrill Hills Retirement Center 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM June 18 RBHOO Picnic (Rarity Bay) 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM June 24 Little Italy 5:45 PM to 8:30 PM

When helping clients select upholstered furniture, we consider the parts of a chair you see, and the parts you don't. Upholstery is a great example of the idiom "Don't judge a book by it's cover." The construction and materials on the inside are just as important (if not more so) than the fabrics and style of the frame that you can see. We also consider factors that would affect the cushion choice. Do you like a firm seat, sinking into a cloud, or somewhere in between? How about the appearance - do you like it to be tight and hold its shape? Or would you like a sofa that feels relaxed and a little disheveled? The density of the foam inserts, and what it is paired with makes a big difference in how a chair feels when you sit in it. We also make sure the scale of the chair fits you ergonomically based on your dimensions.

UT Gardens’ May 2022 Plant of the Month

New Vinca Series is Tiny and Terrific I

Submitted by Jason Reeves, research horticulturist, University of Tennessee Gardens, Jackson

have always been a big fan of the annual, Catharanthus roseus, better known as vinca. They are blooming machines, flowering all summer despite our heat and humidity. They are also drought tolerant once established, and pest free. The Titan, Pacifica, Mega Bloom, Tattoo and Mediterranean series have long been favorites of mine. In 2019, while attending a trade show in Ohio, I met Soiree® Kawaii and knew I had to give this series a try. The following spring Suntory sent us samples of each color to grow and evaluate. They were fantastic performers, and we fell head over heels for the cute little things. This summer you see them growing at the UT Gardens in Jackson, Crossville and Knoxville. We even grow them for our plant sale at the UT Gardens, Jackson, so you can enjoy them, too! Developed in Japan by Suntory Flowers and introduced for sale in 2016, Soiree Kawaii® has taken a few years to catch on. They are described as tiny, but terrific! Indeed, they are. The word “kawaii” means cute in Japanese, describing the flower size and shape. These plants are produced from cuttings, whereas most vinca on the market are seed grown. Unlike seedgrown vinca, the plants grow more like a little mounding shrub reaching 6 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide. They are dense, well branched and covered with hundreds of blooms half the size of most vinca. The foliage is deep glossy green like standard vinca but also half the size. Think of them as vinca’s cute little sister! Like all vinca, Soiree should not be planted until the soil warms, and they need six or more hours of full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, they will tolerate drought but will perform best with supplemental water when there are long periods without rainfall. They work well in the landscape at the front of the border, as well as in containers where they will trail over the side by late summer. Just don’t plant them with aggressive plants such as sweet potato vine and trailing petunias, which will overtake Soiree. Soiree Kawaii® comes in seven colors: Lavender, Blueberry Kiss, White Peppermint, Red Shades, Coral, Coral Reef, and Light Purple. Also, in the Soiree® family is Soiree® Double. The growth habit of Soiree® Double vinca are more like standard seed-grown vinca, but with a double flower. Soiree® Double comes in Orchid, Pink and White, which is a pale pink rather than a true white. If you’re looking for carefree color all summer, give Soiree® Kawaii a try! The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public.

Let’s talk pollination before I close. If you do only one thing for the earth this year, let it be planting host plants for pollinators. There are many beautiful annuals, perennials, and shrubs that are also great for the birds and bees. Your HOA might not be happy if you turned your lawn into a native garden (although it would be much better for the environment), but you can easily tuck some butterfly weed, salvia, hyssop, or dill into a corner. A quick Google search will give you a whole list of beneficial plants, so be sure to add some to your yard. Have a great summer! Get Up – Get Out On the Water!

Y

By Patrick Boring

ou’ve probably noticed the weather outside is gorgeous. The air is getting warmer, and so is the water. Boating season isn’t just around the corner. It’s here. And there’s nothing quite like it. You can already feel the wind in your hair and picture the cool spray of the water as it flashes and glimmers in the sunshine, not to mention the gentle back and forth rocking in the lake’s embrace. It’s not a question of if you’ll take your boat out on the water, but when. More than that, when you take your boat out, will it be only after spending precious minutes detailing said boat, removing its cover by hand, cleaning up the spider and bird leavings that have accumulated over the months, all while knowing you’ll have to wrestle said cover back on later? Or will you cut out all that unnecessary to-do completely, spending your precious time as intended – out on the lake? Taking your boat out really can be that easy— that is if you have a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Here’s the concept: invest in a garage for your boat that protects your craft like your home garage protects your car. Be prepared to cover and uncover your boat in 30 seconds without laying a finger on it, all at the touch of a button. Be prepared to get the full value out of your boating experience— to not be weighed down into staying home because the struggle just to launch your boat isn’t worth the effort. Be prepared to slather on that high SPF sunscreen – you’ll need it as you find yourself wanting

to get on the water more and more all thanks to the quality boating experience our Touchless Boat Cover System provides. It’s an investment you won’t regret, with immediate results you can’t ignore. Even better, you can choose from a variety of maintenance packages, from Basic, where Lifetime Docks LLC will lubricate the system’s 20 to 25 pulleys, and adjust components, all the way up to Lifetime, which offers an even greater variety of helpful maintenance packages to adjust to your exact situation.

Don’t wait now! It’s time to wake up, get up, and get out on the water. It’s time to invest in your Touchless Boat Cover System, cutting out all the wasted time spent fighting with covers manually. And it’s time to call us at Lifetime Docks, LLC to reserve your system before the crowd truly descends. Lifetime Docks, LLC Patrick Boring 865.719.0027 patrick@lifetimedockstn.com

e’ve all seen it: The house that is the epitome of curbside appeal, that is until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. If your garage’s main purpose is random storage, maybe it’s time to repurpose all that valuable space. PremierGarage of Knoxville can help you transform your overlooked and underused garage into functional living space, starting with a custom garage floor to take your garage from frantic to fabulous. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials -- from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) -- from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover-up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can trans-

form an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 15 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical-, stain- and slip-resistant. The two-day process starts with trained technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more ‘finished’ and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in dozens of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Discover the affordability and beauty of transforming your garage floor. The Art and Science of Oriental Rug Washing

10B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, June, 2022

By Kerry McDuffie, Owner – Superior Rug Cleaning

L

ike Oriental rug weaving, oriental rug washing is a true art! And yet, there’s so much science behind the proper care of your treasured rugs. Today, as ever-growing numbers of homeowners and businesses are choosing hand-crafted Oriental rugs to replace wall-to-wall carpeting, Superior Rug Cleaning has demonstrated its talent for innovation by creating a state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique that safely and affordably cleans and revitalizes your family’s Oriental rugs. Just how does Superior Rug Cleaning ensure your rug is cleaned safely and effectively? 1. Pre-inspection: We check very carefully for pre-existing conditions such as fading, dye migration, tears, and pulls, and then take a photo of the rug. Rugs can come in damaged, unbeknownst to the customer, so pre-inspection is critical. 2. Dye-stabilization test: Your rug undergoes a couple of tests to ensure the colors are stable and will not run during the cleaning process. This will determine which method of cleaning is the safest. 3. Pre-Vacuum: Aggressively agitate the rug, with our state-of-the-art Badger machine, to loosen the soil that regular vacuuming cannot remove. All loose soil is removed. 4. Pre-condition: A mild cleaning detergent solution is applied and brushed into the fibers to loosen the soil.

5. Washing: Based on the type and construction of the rug, it is submerged, or surface washed, and then scrubbed again and rinsed very thoroughly with our Kinetico softened water. 6. Extraction: The rug is then taken out of the wash area, and excess water is removed. 7. Neutralizing: Leaving the rug in a balanced ph condition is a must to ensure a soft feel to the fibers while the drying process begins. 8. Drying: One of the last steps in the cleaning process is proper drying of the rug. It is then taken to our temperature controlled drying chamber. Hoisted on a drying pole and up it goes. It takes anywhere from 8 to 36 hours to dry depending on type of rug. 9. Grooming & Combing: Setting the pile and combing out the fringe is important to the finishing and pile lay of the nap. 10. *Fringe: Cleaning of the fringe can either make or break the look of the rug. It can hold quite a bit of soil that cannot be vacuumed out. We clean the fringe while hanging with our exclusive fringe table using the best products available to make it as clean and bright as possible. *Fringe can sometimes be permanently discolored from day-to-day wear. 11. Post-vacuum and inspection: Last, but not least, your rug is vacuumed to remove loose fibers and to check to see if any stubborn spots or stains remain. If it does not pass our rigorous inspection, it is then spot cleaned or even recleaned, if necessary, to ensure you are

With six titles and a total of 56 performances, the complete lineup of the upcoming season of Broadway at the Tennessee Theatre is presented by Greater Knoxville Honda Dealers and includes: » DEAR EVAN HANSEN – Nov. 15-20 (8 performances) » JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR – Nov. 29-Dec. 4, 2022 (8 performances) » TOOTSIE – Jan. 3-8, 2023 (8 performances) » HAMILTON – Feb. 7-19, 2023 (16 performances) » CATS – April 11-16, 2023 (8 performances) » AIN’T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS – July 18-23, 2023 (5 performances) In addition, the Tennessee Theatre has released a sneak peek of the 2023-2024 season, revealing that the lineup will include the smash hit WICKED. The best way to guarantee tickets to WICKED is to purchase a season package for the 2022-2023 season. Subscribers will then have the opportunity to renew for the 2023-2024 season and can secure their seats for WICKED before tickets become available to the general public. The Broadway sensation WICKED looks at what happened in the Land of Oz...but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman, born with emerald-green skin, who is smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships...until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.” “Broadway at the Tennessee is expanding each year, entertaining thousands of returning and new patrons at Knoxville’s Grand Entertainment Palace,” Tennessee Theatre Executive Director Becky Hancock said. “As our Broadway series continues to grow, we are able to attract bigger titles for more performances, ensuring that more people have the chance to experience and enjoy the best of touring Broadway right here in Knoxville.” Existing subscribers of the Broadway the Tennessee presented by Greater Knoxville Honda Dealers series will have renewal periods based upon their subscription type, providing the opportunity to renew and secure their season tickets before new subscriptions and single-show tickets go on sale. Starting June 27, subscription packages go on sale to the public. Subscriber benefits include first notification of season lineups; the opportunity to purchase tickets to individual shows before the general public; reduced ticket fees and the best available prices of the season; and the ability to renew the subscription for the 2023-2024 season, thus securing seats for WICKED. To renew a current subscription now through June 24 or to purchase a new subscription starting June 27, call the Tennessee Theatre Box Office at 865-684-1200, extension 2, or visit the Clinch Avenue Box Office in person. The Box Office is open Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The 2022-2023 season of Broadway at the Tennessee presented by Greater Knoxville Honda Dealers features a

diverse lineup of stories set to come to life on the stage of the Historic Tennessee Theatre. DEAR EVAN HANSEN includes eight performances from Nov. 15-20, 2022. Winner of 6 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theatre Album, DEAR EVAN HANSEN is the deeply personal and profoundly contemporary musical about life and the way we live it. The Washington Post calls DEAR EVAN HANSEN “Theatrical magic. One of the most remarkable shows in musical theater history.” JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR includes eight performances from Nov. 29-Dec. 4, 2022. With lyrics and music by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber, this musical theater classic is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Appealing to both theater audiences and concert music fans alike, this production pays tribute to the historic 1971 Billboard Album of the Year while creating a modern, theatrical world that is uniquely fresh and inspiring. TOOTSIE includes eight performances from Jan. 3-8, 2023. This laugh-out-loud love letter to the theater tells the story of Michael Dorsey, a talented but difficult actor who struggles to find work until one show-stopping act of desperation lands him the role of a lifetime. Featuring a hilarious Tony Award®-winning book by Robert Horn and an outrageously clever score by David Yazbek (The Band’s Visit, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), TOOTSIE is a joyful delight. HAMILTON includes 16 performances from Feb. 7-19, 2023. This is the story of America then, told by America now. Featuring a score that blends hip-hop, jazz, R&B and Broadway, HAMILTON has taken the story of American founding father Alexander Hamilton and created a revolutionary moment in theatre—a musical that has had a profound impact on culture, politics, and education. HAMILTON is based on Ron Chernow’s acclaimed biography and completely transformed theater and the way we think about history. CATS includes eight performances from April 11-16, 2023. Audiences and critics alike are rediscovering this

beloved musical with breathtaking music, including one of the most treasured songs in musical theater – “Memory.” CATS tells the story of one magical night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which cat will be reborn. The original score scenic and costume design are combined with allnew lighting and sound design and updated choreography and direction to make this new production for a new generation. AIN’T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS includes eight performances from July 18-23, 2023. AIN’T TOO PROUD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE TEMPTATIONS is the electrifying new smash-hit Broadway musical that follows The Temptations’ extraordinary journey from the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Nominated for 12 Tony® Awards and the winner of the 2019 Tony Award for Best Choreography, it’s a thrilling story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal during a decade of civil unrest in America. Set to the beat of the group’s treasured hits, including “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,” “Get Ready,” and “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” AIN’T TOO PROUD tells the unforgettable story of the legendary quintet that Billboard Magazine named the greatest R&B group of all time. The Tennessee Theatre announced that in addition to the 2022-23 Broadway season titles, 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL will be a featured add-on show! This smash-hit musical features a book by the iconic movie’s original screenwriter Patricia Resnick and an Oscar, Grammy and Tony nominated score by the Queen of Country herself, Dolly Parton. 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL tells the story of three co-workers pushed to the boiling point by their sexist and egotistical boss. Concocting a plan to kidnap and turn the tables on their despicable supervisor, will the ladies manage to reform their office – or will events unravel when the CEO pays an unexpected visit? Inspired by the iconic 80’s film and brought to you by Dolly herself, this hilarious new production is about teaming up, standing up and taking care of business! While 9 TO 5 THE MUSICAL is not included in the 2022-23 subscription season, this show will go on sale individually in 2023 and subscribers will have early access to tickets. Turning Chaos into Calm Is your closet a jungle of clothes?

H

ere is the thing about cluttered closets: Most people think of closets as “out of sight, out of mind”. Just close the door. Nobody will see it. However, YOU see it! There’s lost time scouring the closet for missing items and a financial drain of replacing things you can’t find. In fact, research shows there is a physiological impact as well. If you’ve got closet clutter, you’ll experience negativity and frustration because of the physical chaos. “If your closet is organized and everything is easy to find, it starts the day on a positive note,” says Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “Having a closet designed for your specific needs is worth the time and investment.” When it comes to closet design and features, depending on the size of your closet, there are probably more options available than most people realize. Besides rods to hang your clothes, some of the most common features people want in their closets are: Dedicated Shoe Storage Shelving for shoes makes it easy to see each pair you own instead of constantly bending down and searching the floor for the match to the shoe you want. Slanted shoe racks are one of the most popular ways to store shoes since it is easy to see each pair. Straight traditional shelving provides easier adjustability when you need to transition from winter boots to flip-flops.

Drawers Once considered a luxury, drawers in a closet are now part of a basic design. Drawers not only increase storage inside the closet, but they allow you to get dressed without having to walk back and forth, back and forth, from your closet to a dresser in the bedroom. Keeping all your clothes in one place is definitely a time saver. And of course, while shelves and hanging rods put your shoes or clothes on display, drawers conceal items, an essential for things like underwear and pajamas. Accessory Display and Storage If you don’t have the proper storage for items like jewelry, belts, and other accessories, they often get lost or they’re hard to find when you want them. For jewelry, a dedicated lined drawer with compartments keeps jewelry organized and away from damaging dust. Jewelry drawers can also have locks installed. The most popular accessory is a slide-out valet rod mounted to the side of a panel. It serves as a temporary place to hang clothes as you move them around or place your next-day clothes at night on the valet rod to make getting ready in the morning even faster. Tailored Living of Knoxville can help you discover closet organization that brings calm to the chaos. Tailored Living® 865-947-8686 www.tailoredlivingknoxville.com
