Songbirds opens with rare and vintage pieces Songbirds offers a unique rock & roll experience with an unparalleled permanent and rotating collection of more than 500 rare vintage instruments. Each display features instruments that made the music, as well as the stories and artists that brought them to life. The main exhibits are self-guided and the All Access Tours include a guided tour through the main exhibits and access to the Green Room and the Vault, where some of the most exclusive guitars in the world are displayed (require advance registration). The museum also offers regular live music, educational workshops, and can be booked for special events. New music venue, The Signal, opens on Chattanooga’s Southside The Signal is Chattanooga’s newest live music venue located on Chattanooga’s vibrant Southside. The 1,300-capacity industrial-chic warehouse is fit for live music, receptions, fundraisers, corporate events, video shoots, trade shows, and conferences. Operated by Marathon Music Works out of Nashville, TN, The Signal will play host to all genres of music with artists like Gramatik, Corey Smith, X Ambassadors, and more. Southeastern Adventure Tours brings fun to the Tennessee River Southeastern Adventure Tours is an educational company devoted to giving everyone access to the adventures found in the great outdoors. Professional tours include a three hour raft float through the Grand Canyon of the Tennessee River. Summer day camps, nature walks, and mineral hunts, as well as gold prospecting day hunts, are also available. After a day of lively, educational, entertaining adventure, each safari will end with a question/answer period with all participants. Each adventure is filmed, offering guests the opportunity to purchase video of their individual safari. Songbirds adds Songbirds North and South Stages Just one year after opening, Songbirds has expanded into the downstairs section of the Chattanooga Choo Choo complex, formerly the Revelry Room. The 14,000 squarefoot addition will host a variety of different artists and performers that will provide a unique experience for live music enthusiasts on Chattanooga’s Southside. The recently renovated space features a new sound system and an atmosphere that ties into the collection of rare, vintage guitars and fretted instruments that can be found upstairs. Songbirds’s North Stage, located upstairs, currently accommodates 200 seated visitors, and the new South Stage downstairs has standing room for up to 500 guests. Station Street opens as Chattanooga’s newest entertainment destination Station Street, formerly a low-traffic alleyway along the side of the Chattanooga Choo Choo, is now pedestrian-friendly with an entertainment focus. The paved and landscaped street offers patio access to a broad range of entertainment options, including Songbirds, The Comedy Catch, Terminal Brewhouse, STIR, Backstage Bar, Hush, Frothy Monkey, Regan’s Place, and more in the works. The street is now used as an outdoor festival space and recently became the 11th street nationwide to allow on-street consumption of alcohol (only from businesses adjacent to the street). The North end of the street connects to businesses along Market Street, including Blue Orleans, Tennessee Stillhouse, and the Hot Chocolatier. The South end includes The Crash Pad, Flying Squirrel, Alleia, Main Street Meats, and additional businesses along Main Street. Lemur Forest Exhibit opens at the Tennessee Aquarium Red-ruffed and Ring-tailed Lemurs are playing in their lush rainforest setting under the Aquarium’s glass peaks on the top floor of the Ocean Journey building. Found only on the island of Madagascar, these captivating creatures are one of the most endangered groups of mammals on the planet. The exhibit provides an opportunity to better understand their story of survival and what’s being done to save them from extinction. Additional upgrades on this floor include renovations of the Stingray Bay touch tank and a dramatic new wall of tropical plants featuring Orchids and Nepenthes (pitcher plants), from the ceiling to the floor, and water gently cascading into a small, plant-filled pool. Tennessee Aquarium opens new exhibit featuring holographic technology From virtual reality immersive learning, the region’s first IMAX with laser projection system, to the only tweeting electric eel in the world, the Tennessee Aquarium continues to be a leader with technology. The new exhibit – Tiny, But Mighty Important – features never-seen-before holographic technology focusing on the role humans play in water quality and the importance of animals such as shiners, darters, and minnows. Guests can watch a short presentation appearing to float in mid-air that illustrates the devastating impact that silt and erosion can have on freshwater ecosystems. By telling the story of freshwater life in such a novel fashion, the exhibit will effectively show guests that even small species can be hugely important.

Miller Park undergoing $8.5 million renovation Miller Park, located in downtown’s Innovation District, will undergo major renovations that include elevating the park to street level, a larger open lawn, amphitheater with stage for entertainment, climbable rock outcropping, shaded area, more trees, garden walk, and an enclosed pavilion with restrooms, warming pantry for food, and a moveable glass partition. Additional $5 million improvements to the area around Miller Park include connecting Miller Plaza, adding trees to the median on MLK Blvd., making the area more pedestrian friendly, redesigning traffic and pedestrian flow on Patten Parkway, and more. Ruby Falls investing $20 million on expansion The multi-year, multi-phase expansion will enhance the visitor experience. Phase I and II highlights include modernizing the historic attraction, adding an outdoor observation area where guests can relax and enjoy spectacular views, new entrance lobby, improved ticketing experience, expanded retail, renovated and expanded restrooms and office space, and additional parking. Ruby Falls is home to America’s deepest commercial cave and tallest underground waterfall open for public viewing, featuring a 145-foot waterfall located 1,120 feet beneath the surface of Lookout Mountain.

Moon River Music Festival moves to Chattanooga in 2018 Founded in 2014 by musician Drew Holcomb, the annual Moon River Music Festival is an exciting, family-friendly, two-day event highlighting the music and culture of Tennessee. Originally taking place in Holcomb’s hometown of Memphis, Moon River has grown into an important and beloved institution in the Tennessee community. Now in its fourth year, Moon River will continue its celebrated tradition of bringing specially curated music lineups and community-focused experiences in its new location at Coolidge Park and will feature 20-22 national acts, two stages, local food vendors, and more. The 2018 line-up is The Avett Brothers, The Head And The Heart, Drew Holcomb And The Neighbors, Judah & The Lion, Trampled By Turtles, Margo Price, Mavis Staples, I’m With Her, The Dirty Guv’nahs, Joseph, Mandolin Orange, Penny And Sparrow, Durand Jones & The Indications, The Secret Sisters, The War And Treaty, Darlingside, The Ballroom Thieves, Caamp, Liz Vice, Boy Named Banjo, Wilder, and Family And Friends. This year’s festival is September 8th and 9th. Levitt AMP Music Series returns to Chattanooga for fall 2018 The Levitt AMP Chattanooga Music Series is a free, 10-week concert series with a diverse lineup of local, regional, and national artists. Held on the lawn of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center located in the Martin Luther King District, this series activates the area once considered a famed live music hub and center for African American community life while reestablishing it as a thriving cultural destination. Patrons will get to enjoy local food vendors, special themes, and special activities for children. The concert series will be held on Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm August 23 through October 25. American Legion Post 256 Presents Awards

hree Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (AFJROTC) students in Germany have been presented awards by local community organizations. Colonel (Ret) Don Edmands, Jr., representing American Legion Post 256 Tellico Lake and the Hiwassee Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, recently flew to Europe to make the awards. Edmands participated in a Spangdahlem (AFB) High School Annual Awards day presenting medals to the students. Cadet Technical Sergeant DeAndre Gray received the American Legion Scholastic Excellence Medal. Gray, who calls Hahira, Georgia, home, was the Squadron’s Personnel Officer for the past year. His father is Master Sergeant Daniel Gray with the 52nd Fighter Wing Maintenance Group. Gray was promoted to Cadet Command Chief at the ceremonies for the upcoming school year. Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Jordan Soles was
awarded the American Legion General Military Excellence Medal. Soles was Commander of the Corps for the past year. He plans to attend the AFROTC Flight Academy at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia. This father is planning to retire from the Air Force and return home to Florida. Cadet Second Lieutenant Andres Mercado was awarded the Sons of the American Revolution Bronze ROTC Medal. Mercado was promoted to Squadron Commander and Aviation Chief for the coming school year. His father, Staff Sergeant Andrew Mercado, is with the 52nd Fighter Wing Maintenance Group. His family calls Texas home. Ceremonies were conducted at a new location this year, as the high school has moved from Bitburg AFB to Spangdahlem AFB, Germany. The students are attending a school run by the Department of Defense for dependent children of service members serving overseas.

reviously in this column, my own experiences with the non-surgical cosmetics in the salon were discussed and met with an overwhelming response of both questions and comments. This month we will take those experiences to the next level and discuss a surgical
procedure. Injectable cosmetics are an entry level experience to the over 40 crowd and often lead satisfied customers to their first cosmetic surgery. In my own case, it was a procedure called blepharoplasty.

Blepharoplasty is the name of the procedure that takes care of deformities, disfigurations, or modifying the eyelid region of the face. For me, it was simply the removal of the sagging skin above the eyelid that seemed to make everyone ask me if I was tired all the time. Oftentimes people with severely sagging eyelids that impede their vision can have this type of surgery covered by their insurance. Others opt to have the sagging skin taken care of before it interferes with their vision because of vanity reasons. Either way, this is normally a very simple procedure performed in-office with minimal downtime. First is the consultation. During this time, the doctor will determine whether or not you are a candidate for blepharoplasty and discuss your options. After determining a course of action and scheduling the surgery, it is on to the big day. My own blepharoplasty was done with only local anesthesia and a little help from a valium, which was prescribed at the time of scheduling. Due to the “relaxing” effect of the valium, a driver was needed to take me to and from the doctor’s office. At first, there were major concerns
about being relaxed enough to have someone cut on my eyelids, but rest assured that by the time the procedure began, I had absolutely no concerns Brian K. Whitehead about anything. Actually, we were engaged in conversation the entire time, and there was nothing unpleasant about it at all. The slicing and dicing part of the surgery was over in what seemed like no time at all, and the next thing I knew, the stitches were going in. After a little nappy on the ride home, it was straight to the recliner with the ice packs. Icing is critical to keeping the swelling down and should not be bypassed for any reason. At bedtime, recovering patients are encouraged to sleep only on their backs for a few days until the eyelids have had an opportunity to heal a bit. Awakening the morning after and looking in the mirror was quite a shock. My reflection was hideous at best. The entire incision was red and swollen, and my eye sockets were black and blue. In spite of my alarming appearance, there was still very little if any pain, even though I looked as if I were the lone survivor of a terrible train wreck. A couple of days later, and it was back to work for me. Most of the swelling had subsided, and there was only a little discoloration left for me to deal with until the stitches were removed a couple of days later. Within 10 days of the procedure, there was no evidence that anything ever happened, except for the absence of the baggy eyelids that had plagued me for years. One year later there is not even the evidence of any scars on my eyelids, and I couldn’t be happier with the results and would easily recommend both the blepharoplasty procedure and my surgeon, Dr. Tom Gallaher. On Thursday, August 2, CHEO will be showing a double feature, which includes two episodes of the Docu-Series. Each episode is an entity unto itself, so attend often. Dr. Fred Pescatore, MD, practices integrative medicine in New York and will tell us about powerful natural medicines and remedies for Alzheimer’s. thens Area Council for the Arts offers classes, camps, workshops, art competitions, auditions, and more this summer for all ages at The Arts Center, located at 320 North White Street in Athens.
Summer 2018 Arts Camp Opportunities for Ages 4-17
Fine Arts Camp for ages 11-17 includes four hours of daily visual arts workshops Monday through Friday, July 23-27, ending in an exhibit on July 27 at the end of camp day. Only students who complete at least one project during camp may participate in the exhibit at the end of camp. Camp day is noon to 4:30 pm. The cost of camp is $75, and a snack and all materials are included. Registration deadline is July 20. Performing Arts Mini Camp for ages 4-10 includes two hours of daily performing arts workshops Monday through Friday, July 30-August 3, ending in a performance on August 3 during Evening with the Stars at 7:30 pm. Only students who attend all five days of camp may participate in the performance on August 3. Camp day is 10 am to noon for ages 4-6 and 1 to 3 pm for ages 7-10. Each group of campers will perform a choral selection from Mary Poppins at the beginning of Evening with the Stars. The cost of camp is $45 for all five days of camp, or $12 a day, and a snack and all materials are included. Registration deadline is July 20.

Drawing 101 meets Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on July 9, 16, 23, and 30. Drawing 102 meets Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on August 13, 20, 27, and September 3. The cost is $60 or $115 for both classes when purchased together. The materials fee is $20 or students can bring their own (list provided). Watercolor Painting Lab with Sandy Brown is for ages 16 to adult. This class allows students to explore their own creative style using this exciting medium. Studies in watercolor are provided or students may bring their own. These two intensives focus on individualized guidance and tips for creating stronger paintings. It is suitable for intermediate and advanced watercolor painters. There are two options for this class: July Watercolor Lab meets Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on July 19 and 26. August Watercolor Lab meets Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on August 23 and 30. The cost is $45 or $85 for both. Materials are not included. Athens Community Theatre Auditions start early this year. Auditions for Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins are on July 22 at 2 pm and July 23 at 5:30 pm at The Arts Center. Show dates for Mary Poppins are September 21-30. Chihuly Glass Sculptures, Concerts Under the Stars Help Make Summer Shine at Biltmore

rom towering, jewel-toned glass sculptures in the historic gardens and reflecting pools, to the array of stars gracing the concert stage, Biltmore shines this summer in multiple ways. Chihuly at Biltmore Meandering through the mesmerizing display of Dale Chihuly’s enormous shining glass sculptures in the estate’s historic gardens has the makings of a perfect summer day. Chihuly at Biltmore is the first large-scale art exhibit the estate has hosted. Each of the 16 vivid installations is highlighted by a complementary landscape design created by Biltmore’s horticulture team in collaboration with the Chihuly team. The gardens are open on select evenings for the first time ever during reservation-only Chihuly Nights at Biltmore. At nightfall, the artwork is dramatically illuminated to showcase their colors and shapes. Guests may take in sunset views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, enjoy live music in the gardens, and choose from a selection of wines from an alfresco wine bar. Chihuly Nights at Biltmore is offered throughout the exhibition’s run. The Biltmore Concert Series Summer nights heat up when nationally- and internationally-known stars take the grand stage on the South Terrace of Biltmore House during the annual Biltmore Concert Series. As we enjoy a bit of family fun celebrating this very special holiday, we should also reflect on the price we have paid for our independence and freedom. The Revolutionary War, the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm, and the ongoing wars being waged against terrorism all serve as reminders of the cost of freedom paid for by so many American lives. Please remember to thank a vet for your freedom this 4th of July.

Each student is assigned a mentor by the church’s Scholarship Team, who stays in touch with the students and provides encouragement and any assistance that may be required during the term of the scholarship. Each year the church hosts all active students in the scholarship program to discuss their life and educational status with the congregation during Scholarship Sunday service. It was held on June 24th. “We are thankful for the Community Church at Tellico Village and those who donated to make this scholarship program possible,” said Melanie Shepard, Greenback Guidance Counselor. “The committee does an excellent job in screening all the qualified candidates and making sure they pick someone who is in need yet deserves the scholarship money. For a couple of my students, receiving this award allowed them to attend and continue their education at their dream school. Some may view it just as a donation, but to me, it is CCTV making an investment for a better future.” “The scholarship given by the Community Church of Tellico Village means so much to Loudon students,” said Heather Waldron, Counselor. “Loudon High School students get financial support all four years of their educational
journey, as well as the prayers and support of a wonderful community. Upcoming Comedy The Dixie Swim Club Marks 100th Tellico Players Production

The play marks the 100th production by the Players since the group formed 28 years ago. They set aside a weekend each August to recharge their relationships at the same beach cottage on North Carolina’s Outer Banks. There, free from husbands, kids, and jobs, they catch up, laugh, and meddle in each other’s lives. The play focuses on four of those special weekends, spanning a period of 33 years. Jo Beliles will play Sheree Hollinger, the spunky team captain who desperately tries to maintain her organized and “perfect” life and continues to be the group leader. Judie Douglas appears as Dinah Grayson, a wisecracking overachiever. She’s a career dynamo, whose victories in the courtroom are in stark contrast to the frustrations of her personal life.
Cindy Archer is Lexie Richards, a pampered and outspoken woman determined to hold on to her looks and youth as long as possible. She enjoys being married over and over again. Barbara Kistler-Martin will play Vernadette Simms, a self-deprecating acerbic woman acutely aware of the dark cloud that hovers over her life, who has decided to just give in and embrace the chaos. Geri Denny appears as Jeri Neal McFeeley. Sweet and eager to please, she experiences a late entry into motherhood that takes them all by surprise. The Players’ first production was the melodrama Dirty Work Afoot in September 1990. They performed the play again in October 1998. Early Players performances were staged in the lower level of the Tellico Village Yacht Club and at various other venues. The current Playhouse opened in October 2014 with the comedy Red Velvet Cake Wars.

Ken Mansfield: “PHILCO” by

ew people have been able to experience the things that Ken Mansfield has been able to experience in his lifetime. He was the manager for Apple Records in the U.S. This put him on a first-name basis with each of the Beatles and their inner circle. It also allowed him to be a part of Beatles history and watch the famous “Roof Top Concert” that marked the end of the band. (Go to YouTube and type in “Ken Mansfield Beatles Roof Top” and you’ll see Ken in a white trench coat, sitting near Yoko Ono.) He’s worked with many other music icons, including Waylon Jennings, The Beach Boys, James Taylor, Roy Orbison, Dolly Parton, and many, many more. Ken fought cancer and, by the grace of God, won and is also a traveling minister, sharing his story and the gospel all across the country. Ken is also quite an accomplished author, having written six books. The first was “The Beatles, The Bible, and Bodega Bay.” His more recent one is his first novel entitled “Philco” – a brilliantly written, Twilight-style book that reminds the reader of what American society once was – like Mayberry. It was about “Philco” that I had the privilege of interviewing Ken for the second time. (The first was nine years ago and can still be read on www. boomerocity.com.) When asked why he wrote the book, Ken said, “Well, first of all, it’s my first fiction book. I’ve been writing this book for 18 years. I started it after my first book, ‘The Beatles, The Bible, and Bodega Bay’, and for some reason, another book would always take its place. ‘I gotta write this book next.’ It kept getting shoved back. “I felt like God had told me, ‘There’s a time for this book, and I’ll let you know when.’ So, as I would write this book, I would have fellow writers who I would pass ideas onto. It’s gone through about 12 titles – just remolding the concept. Then, just last year – I mean, God didn’t say, ‘Hey, I need to talk to you about your book. I think we should go with it, now.’ – I just felt that it was time, and some things fell together with my agent and this
publisher. So here it is, 18 years later.” Ken then goes into what the book is about. “What this book is about, in a way, is my yearning for what life was like when I grew up in the ’40s and ’50s. It was really an idyllic time. We weren’t a perfect society back then either, but there was a time when we would respect each other. We were brought up with certain moral values. An honest day’s work for an honest dollar. If you saw somebody alongside of the road, you stopped and said, ‘Can I help with that tire, ma’am?’
“Today I wouldn’t pull over to help somebody, because I’m afraid that I’ll be beat up and robbed or something because of all these scams and things. It was a time of innocence; a time of helping your neighbor out and a time when things weren’t so complicated." I asked Ken if we can go back to Mayberry. “No. I’ve written a song. Phil Keaggy and I were talking. They have theme songs for movies, why can’t we have a theme song for a book? We wrote a theme song for ‘Philco’. I posted it on Facebook. The point of it is I can’t go back there anymore from here. Not from where we are. We could just never get back there like it was.” We can’t go back to Mayberry, and we can’t put the bite of the apple back on it. I asked Ken what do we do? “I think we try to recapture as much of that as we can. Literature and the movies and everything are so dark these days. My wife and I like to go to movies, but there’s never anything to watch. Everything’s so dark. Sometimes we get up and leave just because of the foul language. I’m no prima donna. My gosh, I came out of the music business and was with Waylon Jennings for five years and rock and roll and stuff. But after a while, it’s just offensive. And dirty. We’ll be watching a beautiful movie, and you’ve got all this foul language and stuff in it. “I think we can go back – some of us can go back, in a way. But not all of us will go back. egarded as one of the most unique and eagerly anticipated cultural gatherings in the world – “a music festival with a rare vision” (The New York Times) – Big Ears Festival will return in 2019 with its 8th edition, taking place March 21-24 in historic Knoxville. Festival passes are on sale now. “Contained within a walkable radius of historic downtown Knoxville – in a range of ornate landmark theaters, refurbished industrial spaces, art galleries, churches, and clubs – it creates its own atmospheric climate, along with a center of gravity,” describes NPR Music. “From its first iteration in 2009, the festival has been a locus of expedition, defined more by a go-anywhere ethos than by any style or genre allegiance.” Big Ears is thrilled to share the first in a series of artist announcements for the 2019 festival. It’s going to be another mind-blowing experience, and we’re excited to start sharing the details sooner rather than later. ” About the Artists Since his stunning 2014 performance at Big Ears, Berlin-based pianist and composer, Nils Frahm, has continued to mesmerize with his unconventional approach to an age-old instrument, played contemplatively and intimately, and on an epic scale through his vast stage shows. His most recent record, All Melody, has a massive sonic landscape, combining hushed piano with epic electronic processing, which inspired Pitchfork to call it his “grandest statement yet.” After first appearing at Big Ears in 2016, with Anthony Braxton and playing solo, Mary Halvorson returned to Big Ears in 2018 for a mesmerizing set with Jason Moran and Ron Miles in BANGS. Next year Halvorson will return once again, this time with her brilliant and imaginative new project, Code Girl. Built around a unique collection of songs penned by Halvorson, Code Girl features the powerful young singer, Amirtha Kidambi, along with trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and the potent rhythm section of bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Tomas Fujiwara. Lonnie Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity since 1979. His art and music, born out of struggle, hardship, but perhaps more importantly out of furious curiosity and biological necessity, has
manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound, as seen in the mini-documentary The Man Is the Music. Holley’s journey seeking healing in the transformative power of art has led him to collaborate and tour worldwide with artists like Animal Collective, Bon Iver, Bill Callahan, and Deerhunter, to name a few. His artwork has been exhibited widely from The Metropolitan Museum of Art to the White House. Kentucky-based pianist and composer, Rachel Grimes, returns to Big Ears in 2019 to present her breathtaking folk opera and film The Way Forth, written for voice, strings, piano, harp, narrator, and choir. The Way Forth weaves through voices of generations of Kentucky women from 1775 to today, as Grimes traces new perspectives on key historical events through poignant personal recollections, letters, photos, and intimate portraits from her own family line. Amidst stories of hard-working, loving people, a quieter theme emerges: The systemic prohibition of the rights of women, indigenous peoples, and enslaved and subsequently freed African-Americans for the sole purpose of amassing wealth and the exploitation of resources. As a counter narrative, The Way Forth presents the emotional legacy of the silenced, the holistic, and the eternal grace and redemption of time as essential to how we may envision our future. Grimes has toured the world as a solo pianist, with numerous ensembles, and as a primary composer and performer in the groundbreaking chamber ensemble Rachel’s. Bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty – the rhythm force of Fugazi – have united with jazz and experimental guitarist Anthony Pirog to form an all-star trio. The result is The Messthetics, a band dedicated to the live ideal, where structure begets improvisation. Irreversible Entanglements is a liberation-oriented,
free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (a.k.a. Moor Mother), and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event, organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. The instrumentalists explore and elaborate compositional ideas, but the tone of each piece is driven decisively by Ayewa’s searing poetic narrations of Black trauma, survival, and power. This is music that both honors and defies tradition, speaking to the present while insisting on the future. Hailing from South Africa, guitarist Derek Gripper’s work explores the dialogue between numerous disparate styles of music from around the globe. In one concert, it is not uncommon to hear his solo guitar transcriptions of Toumani Diabaté’s kora compositions and Bach’s violin works, along with South African jazz and avant-garde Brazilian songs. Gripper’s concerts are at once intimate and explosive, improvised and composed, traditional and entirely new. Potomac Horse Fever Diagnosed in Kentucky

Information for equine owners on important disease characteristics
ith a recent case of Potomac Horse Fever identified in Bourbon County, Kentucky, it is important for Tennessee equine owners to
familiarize themselves with the disease. While historically has been found on the east coast, cases of the disease have been identified in Tennessee in recent years, with
additional reports in surrounding southeastern states and other geographical areas of the United States. Potomac Horse Fever (PHF) is an acute gastrointestinal disease that can result in mild colic, fever, and diarrhea in horses of all ages, as well as abortion in pregnant mares. Initially the disease was named due to the number of cases along the Potomac River in the eastern United States. It has also been referred to as ditch fever, Shasta river crud, and equine ehrlichial colitis. The causative agent is Neorickettsia risticii, a gram negative bacteria that has been identified in freshwater snails. The disease is commonly seen in spring, summer, and early fall and is associated with pastures bordering creeks, rivers, or irrigated pastures. Neorickettsia risticii develops in aquatic, freshwater snails, and then is released in immature flukes from the snail. During warmer weather in spring and summer, horses drinking from rivers or streams can swallow the immature flukes, exposing them to the bacteria. Another transmission method is from aquatic insects such as caddisflies, mayflies, damselflies, and dragonflies, which carry the organism and deposit the bacteria on pastures. The horse then inadvertently consumes the organism as they graze and are exposed to the disease. After exposure horses can begin showing symptoms in as little as two days. Clinical signs of PHF include: » Fever (102°-107°) » Off feed (anorexia) » Lethargy, depression » Mild colic with decreased gut sounds » Diarrhea A typical result of the diarrhea and dehydration and stress is laminitis. Pregnant mares are susceptible to abortion due to fetal infection at approximately seven months of gestation. Horses with PHF can be treated with oxytetracycline, an antibiotic. As with any other illness, the sooner a proper diagnosis is made and treatment started, the better the results. Generally, antibiotic treatment is for no more than five days. In animals that have mild colic, fluids and pain relief should be administered. If laminitis develops, more aggressive therapy may be necessary. Several killed vaccines are commercially available. Consult with your veterinarian to determine if vaccination is needed in your location. Consider fencing off pastures that are in low-lying areas where horses could easily be exposed to snails or long standing stagnant water. Use caution while riding on trails or in areas with streams, ponds, lakes, or other freshwater sources. Minimizing insect ingestion in stabled horses by turning off barn lights at night, which normally attract insects. ecent works by artist Kathy Holland and jewelry artist Lynn Straka will be featured throughout July at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the artists, including complimentary refreshments and live music performed by Wendel Werner, will begin at 5:30 pm on July 6th during downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk. The show will highlight the new drawing series, “A Sea of Color,” by Kathy Holland, as well as the mixed-media jewelry of Lynn Straka, one of the Art Market Gallery’s newest artists.
Kathy Holland I grew up enchanted and intrigued by the landscape around me: The undulating, mysterious, constantly changing forests, meadows, light, and weather of the central and southern Appalachians. Even in my travels to England, Scotland, and New Zealand I feel a pull toward similar terrain with an obviously dynamic geological past: Land masses folded by tectonics and molded by weather, moving water, and gravity. This sensibility goes with me on dives in tropical coral reefs. Vast amorphous schools of fish stretch before me like diaphanous scrims and recoil into biomorphic knots and vortices when threatened by predators. These shifting forms, the weather-like ocean currents, shafts and puddles of light, and a sense of weightlessness and distorted space form the framework for these new improvisational explorations of subtly morphing color relationships. Lynn Straka I am a mixed media jewelry artist and practicing small animal veterinarian. I began making natural and glass crystal beaded jewelry in about 2000, helping me through a tumultuous time. Jewelry making quickly became a second vocation, and I began selling my jewelry at craft shows. Ten years later I expanded my work and began to transition from stringing beads to creating my jewelry by letter and word stamping on sterling silver and copper. I opened an Etsy shop, making and selling personalized pendant necklaces, bridal gifts, and other unique pieces. At that time, I was self-taught, researching and learning technique and materials use on my own. I’ve always felt comfortable using small hand tools in these techniques, because the tools are similar to the tools I use in my veterinary surgical practice. In 2008, my husband and I moved to East Tennessee. I had always wanted to take my jewelry art more three-dimensional, and I wanted to learn to solder. I quickly realized that these techniques weren’t easily mastered by a simple video or book. I discovered Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and began taking yearly classes to develop my skills as an artist and metal worker. Having personal instruction reinforced my base knowledge and encouraged me to ask questions and troubleshoot subjects that have challenged me. I currently volunteer at Arrowmont regularly, which allows me to take courses regularly from a variety of expert instructors. The jewelry I make is adornment – created to produce joy to the wearer. Designs influenced by nature, they may evoke a memory, affirm a belief, or be an extension of the wearer’s personality. The common denominators of my work are texture and exercise in technique. Whether it is hand stamping designs or words, forging, creating three-dimensional forms, or impressing texture onto metal, each piece has its own one-of-a-kind, individual personality. Then yes, you can contribute up to $3,450 as an individual, plus an extra $1,000 assuming you are over age 55. The tax benefits of an HSA are triple: The contribution is tax deductible, the growth is tax-deferred, and the withdrawals are tax-free for qualified medical expenses. Pretty hard to beat! Question: I’m divorced after 22 years of marriage and want to retire next year when I’m 65. Can I claim Social Security under my ex-husband’s benefit and let mine keep growing until I’m 70? Answer: If you claim SS before your “full retirement age,” which for you is age 66, then the government looks at all of the benefits for which you are eligible – your ex-spousal benefit versus your own benefit – and gives you the greater of the two payments. However, if you were age 62 coming into 2016, and waited to retire until age 66, you would be in the grandfathered group that could claim an ex-spousal benefit and let your

Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center Announces “Music in the Round” August 10th
T
he Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center recently announced that tickets are on sale for the “Music in the Round” concert on Friday, August
10th. “We are pleased that we are able to bring three nationally known and critically acclaimed singer/songwriters from Nashville to the Barn Event Center in Townsend through the efforts of longtime Heritage Center advocates and sponsors, Mary and Mike Crawford,” said Bob Patterson, Director of Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center. Since 2015, this is the fourth “Music in the Round” benefit concert that has been hosted at the Barn Event Center courtesy of Debbie and Richard Way. The Townsend Community Choir, directed by Linda Gullufsen and accompanied by Sandra Headrick, will perform while guests arrive, followed by a beautiful buffet dinner prepared by the culinary staff at the Barn Event Center. Three nationally recognized singer/songwriters from Nashville will entertain guests and play the songs they have written and explain the stories and emotional background of their music for the rest of the evening.
Reservations are limited to 120 guests at $80 per guest for this exclusive and intimate concert. Zoo Knoxville Elephants Tonka and Edie Now Meeting for Play Dates Z

oo Knoxville’s African elephant male Tonka and female Edie have always been fond of each other, but after careful planning and preparation with an expert elephant behaviorist, the two friends finally got the chance to have a real play date in late May. Since their initial meeting, the pair has enjoyed regular play sessions where the very active Edie loves to engage Tonka in sparring, interactions on the sand pile, and sharing treats. These play dates also have another purpose. They allow zoo staff to assess Tonka’s behavior with females, possibly opening the door to future breeding opportunities through the African Elephant Species Survival Plan. This is a collaborative program of zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) working to save elephants from extinction. Tonka’s genetics are not represented in the North and South American populations, making him the most genetically valuable bull in the country for
breeding and a potentially important part of the future of elephant conservation. In Africa, an average of 96 elephants are killed each day to meet the demand for ivory. The ivory trade generates millions of dollars, which supports criminal syndicates that have been linked to extremist groups. The team of zoos that comprise the African Elephant Species Survival Plan are working to ensure a genetically healthy population in U.S. zoos while working with the Wildlife Conservation Society to protect wild elephant populations in Cameroon, Nigeria, and the Republic of Congo. New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on July 6

he Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from July 6-27. A reception will take place on Friday, July 6, from 5 to 9 pm as part of First Friday activities downtown to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. “My Life, My Art in East Tennessee” in the Main Gallery “My Life, My Art in East Tennessee” is a juried exhibition developed to recognize local artists ages 50 and up. The exhibition will feature fine art works of all media works by local artists reflecting the theme “My Life, My Art in East Tennessee.” Works in the exhibitions may also be a reflection of community, family, and history in East Tennessee. About the artists with featured images: Phyllis Parrot is in her 90s. East Tennessee is her home, and she worked in Oak Ridge during World War II. Jim Griscom has only recently taken up art and painting. His favorite art teacher is local artist Jessica Gregory. “Iron Dreams” in the Balcony Gallery “Iron Dreams” is a show of hand-forged ironwork made by five metal workers in Tennessee. The show will focus on functional and sculptural ironwork for the home and garden. A diverse collection of work results from the unique style and expression of each artist. Featured artists include Joe Babb, Brad Greenwood, Abraham Pardee, Mike Rose, and Ryan T. Schmidt. Joe Babb has been a maker of things in various materials for his entire life, working in steel with forge and anvil for the past 40 years. He currently devotes most of his time to the design and production of custom ironwork. Abraham Pardee holds a BFA in Metals from the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, TN, has completed the Apprentice Program at the Metal Museum in Memphis, and has worked for several professional blacksmith shops across the country. He has exhibited work nationally and taught workshops, and he has managed his own blacksmithing studio, Pardee Metal, since 2016. Brad Greenwood is a full-time coppersmith and blacksmith in Anderson County. He belongs to two professional guilds: The Clinch River Blacksmith Guild (CRBG) and the Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths (AACB). He hand crafts custom pieces in his own forge, utilizing the same techniques perfected throughout centuries by masters of the trade. Mike Rose’s work is a combination of traditional blacksmithing and sculptural expression. He has smithed for more than 40 years, including 25 as Master Smith at Dollywood theme park and eight years as Professor of Fine Arts at Pellissippi State College. Ryan T. Schmidt lives and manages his metal art studio and shop surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Park in historic Cumberland Gap. He learned the art of blacksmithing from William Brock, a traditional blacksmith and the owner of Rusted Bird Studio. Schmidt is a proud member of the Clinch River Blacksmith Guild (CRBG), Appalachian Area Chapter of Blacksmiths (AACB), and Artist-Blacksmith’s Association of North America (ABANA).

Work by Michelle Barillaro, Viktoria Cubbedge, and Emily Shane in the Display Case Michelle Barillaro, a 2018-2019 Bailey Grant recipient, will display paintings and jewelry. She has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She works mostly in abstract using pastels, paint, and charcoal. Viktoria Cubbedge will display four dolls that are made of air-dried clay, acrylic paints, pastels, fabrics, leather, vintage elements, and fabric. She was born and raised in Ukraine and has received degrees in library sciences and exhibition management. She worked as a photographer for almost 20 years. She lives in Seymour and has been making dolls for one year. Emily Shane, a 2018-2019 Bailey Grant recipient, has always been drawn to color and bold graphic design. Ten years ago she ran across three boxes of books destined for the landfill and decided to do something with them. She’s been making art with vintage hardback book covers and ephemera ever since. Inspired by nature, textile design, pop/op art, photography, and films, she uses a variety of tools to cut, shape, and arrange her materials into works of depth, balance, and symmetry.

Marcia Moffett: Summer Time Fun! on the North Wall Marcia Moffett graduated from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, in 1981 with a BFA in Commercial Art. During this time, she concentrated on acrylics and later expanded to poetry and calligraphy. She has also experimented with collage, watercolor, and mixed media to create unique and original paintings. Her current work has vibrant colors, stylized realism, and abstract forms that were not seen in earlier paintings. “Short Sleeve Pants, Socks Are Optional” by Rodney Yardley in the Atrium Rodney Yardley has walked the streets of Knoxville for nearly 45 years, most of the time alone, usually in short pants, and generally with no socks. He believes he may be the original “free range kid.” The exhibition showcases his photography of Knoxville. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. efore I get started, I want you to go outside and walk around your yard and take stock. What is going on out there? Are your plants happy or stressed? Overgrown or manageable? Insect and disease infested or healthy? If you keep a close watch on things, you can prevent a small problem from becoming a big problem. Take steps to remedy any little issues you find. Now that you have that out of the way, let’s talk about summer plants. This summer is starting out as one of those super-hot, energy sucking seasons that turns most gardeners into couch potatoes. You may be finding that some of the flowers that looked lovely in the spring months are looking a little bedraggled now. It’s no big deal! Compost that sucker and try again. Here are some plants that you may want to replace them with because they take the heat like a champ. To save space, I have only listed a few, so don’t hesitate to call if you have questions about others. Annuals » Angelonia – If you want a relatively tall, bushy plant that flowers all summer, this is it. The flower spikes are great as a “thriller” in a container or planted individually in a bed. Plants will re-bloom quicker if deadheaded, but it isn’t critical. » Lantana – This is probably the toughest plant we sell. Once established, it will bloom for the rest of the summer! Some are tall, and some are spreading. Some will come back next year. All are deer and rabbit resistant. Remember that the leaves cause an allergic reaction in some people, and the little black berries they produce in the fall are toxic. » Purslane/Portulaca – These succulents are related and very drought tolerant. They will bloom all summer and stay nice
in the Garden and compact if you deadhead them. Some may reseed and come back next year. Although they are listed as a weed in some garden books, I say that one person’s weed is another person’s wildflower! » Flowering vinca – No, this isn’t the same as the Vinca vine. It is a brightly colored flower that resembles an impatien and is sometimes called a Madagascar periwinkle. It thrives in hot, dry areas but will not take damp soil. It carries a bacterium in its roots and should not be planted in the same place year after year. » Wax begonia – These are the flowers that you see planted everywhere in big beds. The dark leafed varieties take the sun and the green leafed ones are for shade. They will sometimes wilt if they get too dry but will perk right back up when watered (unless you dried them to a crackly crunch, of course). Perennials » Coneflower – This little guy is available in many colors other than purple and is very tough! Some varieties are native here, and all are attractive to pollinators. Some are tall, and some are short. I love them, but some dogs (like my Great Pyrenees) will eat them. It won’t hurt the dog, but my Molly eats it to the ground and kills the plant! » Coreopsis – This grows as a bright yellow weed along the highway. There are many new cultivars in other colors, and all are very sturdy. » Rudbeckia – Black-eyed-Susan is the other name for these, and they are a tough species. The clumps will spread every year, and they have a nice long bloom time. Goldstrum is the most prevalent, but Toto is a smaller variety that is nice. » Salvia – Often called Sage, these are available in several colors and sizes. May Night is our top seller. No matter what it is, it is lovely! » Verbena – Whether you choose the spreading variety (Homestead or Endurascape) or the tall variety (Bonaris), these provide a longer bloom time than any other perennial. They do, however, tend to start dying out after about three years. Bonus » Perennial Grasses – There are many varieties of these, and almost all are sun and heat lovers. (Disclaimer: Many of you may have had some problems with grasses coming back this year, but remember that last winter wasn’t typical.) Small varieties like “Dwarf
Hamln” are great in a small area, and tall varieties like the Switch Grasses make good accent plants. Pink Muhly has a great colorful plume. There are grasses for every yard! All these plants are drought tolerant once established. This does NOT mean that you can plant them and walk away without another thought! They will need to be watered throughout the summer. M
any southern gardeners grew up with an “ordinary” green elephant ear (Colocasia esculenta) in the landscape, hardly worth a second glance. As more savvy gardeners became aware of the roles foliage textures play in a well-designed landscape, plants with large leaves were more appreciated. The movement morphed into a deservedly popular theme of creating a landscape with a bold tropical feel, and new forms of elephant ear began to appear in the marketplace. Even in colder parts of the country folks were willing to dig them and store in protected sites during winter or simply purchase them new each summer. Breeders responded with a surge of cultivars displaying black, chartreuse, or even variegated foliage. Most are not hardy beyond zone 8, but a few have demonstrated their hardiness through zone 7 unless the winter is particularly severe. ‘Black Magic’ was the first of the forms with dramatically dark foliage, which can range from purplish to truly glossy black forms such as ‘Black Coral’ and ‘Diamond Head’. If hardiness is desired, the form called ‘Illustris’ is often persistent through zone 7, and well-sited plants can even spread from the original plants so much as to be considered aggressive! Illustris does not present the solid dark leaf some prefer, with its bright green veins radiating from the center of the leaf. It is also not going to be as large as some of the other varieties, either in leaf size or in height. For the gardener who wants a tall form, seek out the 6-footer called ‘Big Dipper’. The large leaves are supported by dramatic dark stems and cup upwards to form a shallow bowl. A leaf may fill gradually with water during a light rain with no wind, until the weight of the water bends the stem just enough to dump its load. ‘Coffee Cups’ has even more steeply cupped leaves, which expose the gorgeous dark veins on the leaf underside. It is much less hardy, however, while ‘Big Dipper’ may overwinter where well sited in zone 7. Veins are the excitement in other cultivars such as the green-leafed form with richly purple veins called ‘Blue Hawaii’. ‘Elena’ has bright chartreuse leaves, with cranberry veins and a lovely delicate cranberry edge to the leaves. ‘Chicago Harlequin’ has crazy striped stems as its claim to fame, while ‘Mojito’ sports bright green leaves richly splashed and speckled with black. For a gee-whiz, good-golly, take-a-lookat-that-plant reaction, it’s got to be ‘Thailand Giant’ (Colocasia gigantea). With plenty of water and nutrients, this plant may reach 9 feet in height with leaves that measure individually at 5 feet in length and 4 feet in width. For best success with elephant ears other than ‘Thailand Giant,’ generosity with water and nutrients also holds true. These tropical plants love moisture and nutrients, so while they don’t re-

quire a lot for survival, they will richly reward the gardener with a lavish hand. They can be grown in sun or light shade but suffer in a hot sunny site if not given plenty of water. In fact, most of the C. esculenta are happy in wet sites, and good for pond margins, but be aware that C. gigantea will rot in these wet sites. You can find various specimens of elephant ears on display at all of the UT Gardens sites: Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. The gardener should be warned these plants can be addictive. One leads to another and another... The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. ter. Imagine conversation starters like: “This restaurant should have sealed this floor when they installed it. MCFA Pets of the Week
O
ogie is a one-of-a-kind, three-legged wonderboy! He had an injury to his front leg that unfortunately resulted in amputation, but he has not let it faze him in the slightest. He is a ball of endless energy and has never met a stranger. He runs upstairs, does zoomies around the yard, and can outrun every one of his furry foster brothers and sisters. He loves children but does jump and likes to play intensely, so he would be better with older children and teens. He needs lots of exercise, so he needs to be in a physically active household. He has gotten along well with smaller dogs in his foster home, but we recommend him as an only dog because his energy level can be overwhelming and irritating to other dogs. He should not be in a household with cats or other small animals. Oogie is accustomed to stairs, a fenced yard, and lots of activity. He loves to ride but will not jump in a
vehicle on his own. Did you enjoy Tigger’s adventures in the Hundred Acre Wood? With Oogie, it’s just like having your very own Tigger, and that is a wonderful thing!

Did you know this trait makes a good watch cat? Cats have excellent vision and react with a focused stare and perhaps some tail movement if something is spotted. If you look where a cat is intently looking, you will likely find something; maybe something you should be aware of? Willie gets along well with other cats, dogs, and children. He is litter trained, and while he enjoys his meals inside, he does appreciate the freedom to enjoy some fresh air. Sadly, his family has moved into an apartment that does not allow pets, so Willie is looking for a new family to love (and watch out for). All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fee is $40 if over 2 years old and $50 if under 2. Please remember their true purrrsonality may not show in the shelter environment. They may be uncomfortable or scared, so take time to pet them while they are still in their condo and let them get used to you before you pick him/her up. Please come visit all of our cats and kittens. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. he Sunset Arts & Music Festival celebrates creativity through music, art, and food. There will be live music, art and craftsmen vendors, food trucks, and beer ($5 per serving). The music lineup includes The Delights String Quartet, Blue Mother Tupelo, and JD McPherson. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for ages 13-17, $5 for ages 12 and under, and free for age 65+. oving to Tellico Village has been one of the best decisions we’ve made, and choosing Keener Homes to build our dream retirement home was also a great decision.
