5 Tips to Tidy Up Your Finances By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

“I think we can all admit that the health pandemic and the incredible resulting economic shocks have given all of us pause, to think about our place in the world and how secure we really are – whether in our finances or in our good health.”

I

think we can all admit that the health pandemic and the incredible resulting economic shocks have given all of us pause, to think about our place in the world and how secure we really are – whether in our finances or in our good health. But good things can come from that kind of wake-up call, including the awareness that it might be time to do a little sprucing up in the area of your family’s finances. Here are five tips to get you started: 1. Take a look at your credit card statement and decide whether you’re really using all of those monthly subscription services that are so easy to sign up for. And how about that expensive cable or satellite bill? We cut ours from $140/month to $60/month, and that feels really good. 2. If you noticed that you were spending a lot less on expensive restaurants and fancy coffee, be deliberate in continuing to save that new-found source of money. Invest $100/week for 10 years earning an average of 5%, and you’ll have a cool $67,425. 3. It’s time to review your legal planning, no matter how old you are. A will is important, yes, but so is a financial power of attorney, which allows a trusted person to manage your finances if you’re incapacitated. No one (not even your spouse) can access your individually-owned IRA or 401(k) without a power of attorney. And don’t forget about healthcare directives, too. Let’s make life easy for our loved ones if anything ever happens to us.

4. Check your IRA and 401(k) beneficiary designations. Keep in mind that beneficiary designation forms override the terms of your will. And if your beneficiary forms are blank or incorrectly completed, your account will go through your estate and probate process. This triggers critical tax consequences, and those accounts can be claimed by your creditors. 5. If the pandemic triggered some thoughts of “What would my family do if something happened to me?”, it’s time to look at your life insurance and your disability insurance. If the results are reassuring and your family is protected, that’s great news. If it unnerved you, then it’s time to take action. Personally, I took some time to review my family’s finances, and I found a few items to tidy up; I’ll bet you will, too. Call, email, or contact me on our website if you’d like to learn more. Athens Community Theatre Presents Disney’s Newsies Auditions at The Arts Center

A

thens Community Theatre (ACT) announces auditions for the September 2020 production, Disney’s Newsies, a musical based on the Disney film. Advanced registration is required to audition on July 12 and July 13, and anyone interested must read information on how to audition. ACT seeks singers, dancers (including tap dancers), and actors age 14/rising 9th grade and older (including adults) of any and all ethnicities. There is one role for a 10 year old, many roles for “Newsies” late teen/young adults (men and women), and several roles for older adults (men and women). This production is directed by Tyler Peaden, with music directed by Matthew Crabtree. Andrea Kirkland is choreographer, and Melonie Carideo is producer. Athens Community Theatre announces new audition protocols during Phase 2 of COVID-19. Please visit www. athensartscouncil.org and read these procedures thoroughly to prepare for a safe, successful audition. Anyone interested in performing in the show must register to audition during one of the appropriate audition times. Each audition slot is limited to eight participants, which is why advanced registration is required. Each participant may register for one audition slot and one audition slot only. There is an exception for those interested in a tap role, in which case they should sign up for two slots: An open audition slot and a tap audition slot. Available audition slots are: » Sunday, July 12, at 2 pm – audition for Les (10 year old role) » Sunday, July 12, at 2:30, 3, 3:30, 4, and 4:30 pm (open auditions – singing & dancing) » Monday, July 13, at 5, 5:30, and 6 pm (open auditions – singing & dancing) » Monday, July 13, at 6:30 and 7:30 pm (tap auditions) Anyone interested in auditioning must register in advance for the appropriate time slot(s) and prepare a 16-bar solo. The open auditions include singing and dance auditions, which will be done as a group. As this audition is drastically different than past ACT processes, please visit www.athensartscouncil.org to read more about how to register and how auditions will work. You may sign up to audition at www.athensartscouncil. org. You may also call The Arts Center with questions, or to register on the phone, at 423-745-8781. The Arts Center is located at 320 North White Street in downtown Athens. Staff is available for questions during business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 11 am to 5 pm in July. For more information, call The Arts Center at 423745-8781, follow The Arts Center on Facebook, or visit www.athensartscouncil.org.

July Highlights

From the Publisher

eing an entrepreneur now for more than 35 years and knowing what is required to start and remain in business, I am a big supporter of the small business community. Anyone who truly embraces entrepreneurship has experienced the emotional roller coaster of managing and growing a company, and those ups and downs can be dizzying in today’s ever changing economic environment. It takes passion, determination, discipline, and delayed gratification, along with a financial plan and a solid marketing strategy, to create and sustain a business. This is not for the weak of heart.

That is why I applaud all of our small business partners that we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views represent and, many times, nurture in today’s exciting business environment. If you have the entrepreneurial spirit, I encourage you to consider following through on your dreams. Is it risky? Yes, there are risks, but the rewards are there for those who are persistent and consistent. This July 4th we celebrate our country’s independence, and that independence has provided the opportunity to set our own destinies. Let’s not forget that small business is the engine that drives our economy and we at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views remain your largest fan.

Visit Veterans Memorial Park in Athens

O

n September 2, 2000, the City of Athens, Tennessee officially dedicated Veterans Memorial Park in honor of all veterans of the armed services. The park was dedicated in to honor area veterans. There are several monuments in the park to honor area servicemen. In 2002, the park was dedicated a plaza area featuring memorial bricks purchased in honor of veterans, monuments represent the five branches of service, and a plaque in honor of Lt. Charles R. Ware. The park also offers sitting and picnic areas, as well as a half-mile walking trail. Our city does a great job making the memorial park very special and keeping it that way. As part of that effort, sections of the plaza and walking trail will be paved with bricks inscribed with the names of veterans. The City of Athens makes these bricks available to individuals wishing to

honor a veteran. Each brick placed on the walkway, and each replica, will be laser engraved with the name and branch of service of the honored veteran. Each 4” x 8” brick will have one line for the name (20 characters, including spaces and punctuation) and one line for the branch of service. If you are interested, please call Austin Fesmire, Director of Parks and Recreation, at 423-744-2704. “The City of Athens is pleased to offer this means of honoring our veterans,” said Fesmire. “This small token of our appreciation is a permanent way of recognizing those whose service has meant so much to all of us.” Veterans Memorial Park is located at 130 South Jackson Street near downtown Athens. We have several wonderful restaurants and stores downtown, and this would be a great opportunity to shop a little, grab a picnic lunch, and visit our wonderful park.

The Best Way to Water Your Lawn By Marilyn Morete, WATeR Board Member and Chairwoman of the Communication/Publicity Committee

S

oon soaring summer temperatures will prompt us to water our lawns. We all know that too much of a good thing is harmful. Over watering our lawns is harmful to the grass and potentially the lake. WATeR (Watershed Association of the Tellico Reservoir) has outlined generally accepted best management practices (BMPs) for watering lawns that are supported by research from the UT’s Agricultural Extension Service: 1. Water deeply. 2. Water your lawn twice a week. If your home address number is odd, water on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. If your home address number is even, water on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. 3. Water between 3 and 9 am. 4. Turn off your automatic sprinkler system if it rains one inch or more per week. These four basic BMPs are meant to keep your lawn healthy, the lake free of excess chemicals that promote the growth of algae and unwanted vegetation, help balance water pressure in the Village and likely in other neighboring communities, and keep money in your pocket. Watering deeply means soaking the soil 4”-6” inches deep. This practice promotes deep rooting of lawn grasses, which reduces root burning from direct sunlight and preserves the root system when extended droughts occur. Avoid light, frequent watering because it will cause a shallow root system to form, and your lawn will suffer from the burning sun and periods of drought. How does a homeowner determine the length of time it takes for his/her watering system to achieve a deep watering?

An established lawn requires 1” to 1 ½” inches of water per week including rainfall or ½” to ¾” per irrigation period for two periods per week. An easy way to figure out the amount of time you need to water your lawn to achieve the ½” to ¾” per period goal is to place three 2”- 3” inch deep cans in one of your watering zones. Water your lawn until the water in the can reaches the desired level. Average the volume of water accumulated in the three cans. The amount of time you need to achieve a deep watering goal is now known. You may have to increase or decrease your duration timer to maintain your deep watering time goal. Per your house number, set your timer to water two days per week on odd or even days, but if rainfall is equal to or exceeds 1” inch per week, turn your timer off, save money, and let Mother Nature water your lawn for free. After each deep watering, let the lawn thoroughly dry out. When you see your footprints on the lawn, it is time to water. Watering between 3 and 9 am is ideal. First, in the early morning, the wind is most calm. Strong daytime breezes blow the water about and distribute it unevenly. Second, you limit the amount of time droplets are exposed to the sun. This reduces the amount of water loss from evaporation. Third, watering earlier than 3 am will leave water on the blades too long and can cause the growth of fungus. Low water pressure is a concern to many and is caused when most homeowners water lawns on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Simultaneous neighborhood demand for water puts enormous strain on the supply. An easy, no-cost way to resolve this problem and maintain stable water pressure is for residents to water from 3 to 9 am two days a week on odd/even days. The result is a “balancing” effect on neighborhood water pressure. Also, the amount of water available for showers and laundry later in the morning is increased. The odd/even watering pattern has

been adopted by many communities throughout the United States, whether they live in a water rich area like ours or in a drought prone region. It is time to realize that if this didn’t make financial and management sense, people wouldn’t do it. Let’s implement the program in our neighborhoods. BMPs may require you to work with your irrigation service technician who may not fully understand BMPs for your lawn. Talk to your service provider technician when they set up your watering timer to establish a deep watering program per your house number on odd or even days. Or, for best results, do it yourself! How useful are automatic rain sensors? They are designed to turn off your irrigation system if it is raining and avoid over watering. Great idea, but they commonly fail in about a year and must be replaced. The BMP is not to use the sensor and manually turn your timer off in heavy rain because the weekly goal of 1” to 1 ½” inches of water accumulate quickly. Over watering your lawn is an unnecessary expense and can damage the lawn with mold and diseases. In summary, the four BMPs to effectively water your lawn can keep money in your pocket, sustain a healthy lawn, keep phosphorous and nitrogen out of the lake, which decreases the risk for algae and unwanted vegetation, and balances water demands that decrease the risk for low water pressure for all residents. Got GI Problems?

Maybe It’s Your Water

David Brewster, Owner Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

You may not know anyone experiencing GI problems, but there was a family I helped recently that suddenly had a thought: Maybe it’s their water causing their stomach issues. They tried changing their diets and taking a variety of medications, all with minimal success. Fortunately, we were able to help them by removing the contaminants in their water that was affecting their health. We believe that the health of your body begins with the health of your water.

Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church Renovation Updates

S

hepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church continues with their renovation. Due mainly to the COVID-19 outbreak, work with the architects, engineers, and contractors has been delayed. We have finished the remodel of the women’s bathroom and passed inspection. Very soon we will have finished mechanical and architectural drawings to submit for county approval. The finished restroom and the others are and will be ADA compliant. Once plans are approved, work begins on new office space and furniture, the remaining restrooms, and then onto enlarging the Fellowship Hall. The hall will nearly double in size to accommodate meetings,

community gatherings, and numerous church functions. A new kitchen facility will accompany the enlarged hall to provide additional refreshment capacity. Our next phase will be obtaining Tellico Village ACC approval to modify the entrance and exterior elevations of the building. This will include an extended front entry, new signage, front elevation accents, and landscaping upgrades. Our final phase will be the remodel of the sanctuary. Although we have been delayed by the pandemic, our renovation committee, contractors and engineers, church council, and members of our congregation are now moving ahead with renewed spirit and enthusiasm. To all those in our community, we thank you for your support and the good wishes you have given us. To our spiritual partners in Tellico Village, your prayers and encouragement have meant a great deal to our church family. As we continue through our renovation, we would like to provide updates to the community. Our congregation and pastoral staff all live here, and we are all neighbors in this beautiful village. As Tellico Village grows, Shepherd of the Lake will continue to grow. Again, thank you for your interest and prayers.

A Ride to Remember Helps Raise Funding for Our PLACE – A New Adult Center

A

Ride to Remember is part of a much larger effort in Loudon and Monroe counties, as well as surrounding communities, to establish support for those who are experiencing the effects of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Our PLACE, once constructed, will provide programs that will enrich the afflicted individual’s life and provide relief for their caregivers. Additional information concerning Our PLACE is available online at www. ourplacetn.org. In Loudon and Monroe counties alone, a conservative estimate shows approximately 12,000 seniors and their caregivers affected by Dementia. Alzheimer’s and Dementia are ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States according to Alzheimers.net but the only one in the top 10 that has no cure. Charlie Barnard, pastor of First Baptist Church in

Tellico Village, his wife, Teresa, along with another couple, Mike and Sonia Hosick, will be taking a 7,000mile motorcycle journey through the Southwestern and Midwestern States from August 26th through September 16th. Along the way, they will have scheduled speaking engagements to bring attention to the benefits of adult day services for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of Dementia. “We appreciate the opportunity to work with Our PLACE to get the word out about Alzheimer’s/Dementia and how it devastates families,” said Barnard. A departure dinner with two separate seatings is planned for August 26 at 5 and 7 pm. Charlie and his three companions will depart on their journey following the 7 pm seating. Corporate sponsors for the Ride to Remember include

Chick-fil-A in Lenoir City, Alcoa Good Times, The Cagle Cross Group at Merrill Lynch of Knoxville, and Matlock Tire, as well as First Baptist Church in Tellico Village. “My partners and I are very concerned about the burdens Alzheimer’s and Dementia place on caregivers, families, and friends in the area and are more than happy to be a part of this opportunity to improve their quality of life,” said Donnie Iverson from The Cagle Cross Group at Merrill Lynch. Personal sponsors are needed and encouraged to donate per mile or a flat amount. Individual sponsors could receive a commemorative t-shirt and departure dinner ticket. Sponsorship forms are available at First Baptist Church in Tellico Village or by visiting www.ourplacetn. org. Individual departure dinner tickets are $7 and only available for purchase at the church.

Local Organizations Step Up to Assist Good Shepherd’s Mission

R

ecently, due to the increased levels of demand and the high levels of unemployment because of the COVID-19 issue, area churches and organizations have provided additional food donations to the Good Shepherd Center in Madisonville during May. The Good Shepherd is proud of its church partners who stepped up: Christ our Savior Lutheran Church, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, Community Church at Tellico Village, and the First United Methodist Church. Good Shepherd also picks up food donations from Madisonville Walmart twice weekly and Little Caesars pizza. In addition, personal care products were donated by the Christ our Savior Lutheran Church, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, and First United Methodist. These items are in large demand. The Tellico Lake Rotary Club donated $1,000, along with a list of private donors that contribute each month to the Good Shepherd. Currently the Good Shepherd is not taking in clothing donations or providing clothing services to their clients. The Board of Directors is considering month by month as to opening the entire facility. When the Good Shepherd Center is officially opened, new policies and

Museum of Appalachia to Host July 4th Celebration and Anvil Shoot

W

hile most Americans celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, the Museum of Appalachia marks the occasion with an old-fashioned “anvil shoot.” Every 4th of July, the Museum uses gunpowder to launch a 200-pound anvil hundreds of feet into the air. Anvil shoots were once a common way for pioneers to commemorate holidays, elections, and other special occasions. While the tradition of anvil-shooting is nearly obsolete, the Museum has made it a nearly 30-year tradition, striving to keep this piece of history alive. On Saturday, July 4th, the Museum will host anvil shoots at 10 am, 12 pm, 2 pm, and 4 pm, alongside an all-day celebration that includes blacksmithing, sawmilling, bean shucking, dulcimer demonstrations, woodcarving, old time music, a national bell-ringing ceremony, colonial dancing, and patriotic processionals. In order to ensure proper social distancing, the Museum is limiting the number of attendees for each anvil shoot. They respectfully request that visitors purchase advance tickets for their preferred anvil shoot time by visiting www. museumofappalachia.org or by calling 865-494-7680.

ENTERTAINMENT

Adrian Vandenberg

dominant band from the soundtrack of the ‘80s is the band Whitesnake. A key reason is the signature sound of their guitarist, Adrian Vandenberg, who managed to reflect some of the sounds of the ‘70s into the ‘80s with his magnificent guitar work. After the split-up of Whitesnake, Vandenberg has stayed busy with various projects. Most notably, his own self-named band has a new album, Shadows of the Night. It’s the kind of album you would expect from Vandenberg and his band. Boomerocity reached Vandenberg by phone at his home in Holland, and he had this to say about that album: “I suppose it sounds cliché, because everybody says it about their new album, but I’m really, really excited and very, very happy about it, because it turned out exactly as what I was hoping for. Which is like very organic, fresh, dynamic, straight-in-your-face rock without too much polishing like what happened in the ‘80s, as we all know. It was a lot of production and got very, very polished and lots of reverb as if we were all the way in the back of a big stadium. That was basically my hope that it would turn out like that, and it did!” Comparing the new album with past projects, Vandenberg said: “I had maybe a more specific plan about how I wanted it to work out, as far as dynamics, the content of it. It was – I wouldn’t say relatively easy, but in a way it was. It fell together very naturally. And I was really, really happy to find the drummer and the bass player in the band because they play about 90% of the album. Rudy Sarzo and Brian Tichy, they play two songs, and all the other stuff is played by Koen Herfst and Randy van der Elsen – the bass player and the drummer. I’m really, really happy with the drummer.” Shifting gears, I asked Vandenberg to tell about his lead singer, Ronnie Romero. “I was blown away by this small Chilean guy singing like Dio in his best years,” he said. “At the same time, singing songs like Soldier of Fortune that were originally, of course, sung by Coverdale, and he sang it just as well. I got in touch with him. He was really enthusiastic, because he does quite a lot of session stuff, but he would prefer to be like in a main band like this, basically, and not sing everybody else’s music all the time, like he does with all these other projects. So it came at a good time for him, too.” What song would Vandenberg point to as a calling card for the entire album?

“Well, people who may never have heard of me, I would think if they hear Burning Heart, they will probably go, ‘Oh, yeah, I know that song’. But then I think a strong calling card would be ‘Shadows of the Night’ because it has all the elements that makes this band that strong. You know, it’s got great singing, amazing drumming. It’s got the shortest guitar solo being the modest guy I am, the shortest guitar solo on the album.” As for near-term plans, Vandenberg said, “I’m dying to take it on the road. I’m pretty confident that by the end of the year, it’s even possible to start touring again. I wouldn’t be surprised either if they had to take steps to make sure that everybody has to wear a mask or something. Maybe by that time there’s a combination of medication that can cure everybody. That could be possible, too. So that’s definitely one thing that I’m hoping for and relying on. “That’s another thing that I would like to be remembered for, is that I always musically did what I believed in such a way to stay close to my own heart; to make music that is honest and not contrived and that’s not written in order to try to make money with it. I’ve never made any decision in my life based on financial motivations. You have to make your money, of course. You have to make a certain amount of money to live a life that gives you the freedom to create. For me, my living style is not very different than it used to be 40 years ago when I was just an art student. For me, the ultimate freedom is the freedom to create, whether I live in a one-room apartment or whether I live in the south of France in whatever kind of place.” Vandenberg had much more to say, and you can read it all on www.boomerocity.com.

eing outside and enjoying the fresh air is a great way to stay active and rejuvenated, but before you step out into the sunlight, learn more about the potential dangers it may pose. July is the month of UV Safety Awareness, and with temperatures this summer expected to be above average, learning and taking preventative steps is crucial. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation are invisible rays that mainly come from the sun. There are two types of UV rays. UVA rays have the least energy, causing aging and indirect damage to DNA, and they are mainly linked to long-term skin damage like wrinkles. UVB rays have more energy and can damage DNA in cells directly, causing most skin cancers and are the main cause of sunburns. These rays can damage your skin in as little as 15 minutes. While enjoying the outdoors, it is important to be aware of your exposure and ways to prevent damage. • Wear sunscreen – apply broad spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30 to protect from both types of UV rays, even when cloudy • Protective clothing – cover your skin with long sleeves, pants, and a hat if possible • Stay in the shade – take a break from the sun in the shade • Wear sunglasses – UV rays can lead to eye problems UV radiation can cause more than skin and eye damage. It can lead to other health

problems such as a weakened immune system, making it harder to fight off infection. This is particularly dangerous for the elderly. But in smaller doses, sunlight can be beneficial. Sun exposure increases serotonin levels linked to boosting your mood and helping you feel calm. The sun can increase Vitamin D levels as well, an important nutrient for your body. With the potential damage UV rays can cause, it’s important to stay vigilant. If you like being outside or taking walks, consider walking earlier in the day or in the evening, as UV rays are the strongest between 10 am and 4 pm. Before stepping outside to enjoy the beautiful grounds and walking trail at Parkview Senior Living, or wherever you choose to take your stroll, be certain to apply some sunscreen and throw on a hat. You Protect Your Car with a Garage... So How Do You Protect Your Boat? By Patrick Boring, Certified Touchless Boat Cover Manager, Lifetime Docks, LLC

E

stablished in 1997, Lifetime Docks, LLC has earned a reputation for superior craftsmanship, honesty, and integrity. Our expertise is why in August 2018, the Touchless Boat Cover company selected Lifetime Docks to become their exclusive representative for the sale, design, installation, and maintenance of their revolutionary and patented Touchless Boat Cover systems. Imagine a season on the water without the headache of having to clean your boat nearly every time you take your boat out. Instead, imagine pressing the button on your wireless key fob and stepping onto your watercraft and out onto the lake for a day of family fun in the sun. Say goodbye forever to boat cover snaps, straps and bungee cords, and bugs. Benefits to the Touchless Boat Cover: » Allows you to cover/uncover your boat in 30 seconds with a wireless key fob. » Saves you many hours of cleaning/waxing each season. » Protects the interior AND exterior of your boat from damaging UV rays and the elements, unlike a traditional snap-on cover. » Boaters say that they actually use their boats more often. Boaters often will pass on a 30 minute boat ride rather than spending 20 minutes to remove their traditional boat cover and 20 minutes to replace it. » Your investment made in the Touchless Cover comes back to you in a much higher resale value when you sell or trade in your boat in the future because it will still look showroom new. » You can select from 10 custom fabric colors. » Saves you $1,000s in boat detailing and re-gelcoating costs. » 5-year warranty protection. To underscore our commitment to our customers, Lifetime Docks, LLC has named me their Touchless Boat Cover Manager. My sole responsibility, and that of our dedicated team of certified technicians at Lifetime Docks, is the sale, installation, and maintenance of our Touchless Boat Covers. You protect your investment in your automobiles, so why not your boat? Like a garage on the water, I invite you to discover just how affordable your very own Touchless Boat Cover system can be. Call me today to set up your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a season of family memories on the water and not on the dock cleaning your boat. Dollywood Parks and Resorts Now Open

A

fter much careful preparation, Dollywood Parks and Resorts reopened last month, including Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa, Dollywood Theme Park, and Dollywood’s Splash Country Water Park. “We are excited to welcome families back to the Great Smoky Mountains, said Dolly Parton. “Brighter days are here! We have been blessed to work with some incredible experts at Covenant Health and with the State of Tennessee as we have navigated this extraordinary situation. Their advice and teamwork has provided untold help to make sure we are doing the right thing.” All operations will adhere to the Tennessee Pledge and state operational restrictions. “As Dolly said, we are now ready to reopen and get back to the business of ‘Making Memories Worth Repeating’ for our loyal and passionate guests to both our parks and

resort,” said Craig Ross, Dollywood President. “The team has faced this challenge head on, and they have made numerous operational changes we believe will help with the safety of our guests and hosts as we continue to deal with the coronavirus. Safety is - and always will be - one of our highest priorities.” Social distancing guidelines will limit the capacity of the parks on a daily basis. As a result, season passholders will be required to reserve the date and time they wish to visit, and general admission guests will purchase a datebased ticket to ensure all have a safer, socially-distanced

experience. Reservations can be made at www.dollywood. com/reservations and on the Dollywood mobile app, where a how-to video will demonstrate the process. Additionally, prior to entering the facilities, hosts and visitors must have a touchless temperature screening and wear a mask. Children under three are not required to wear a mask at any time. Guests will not be required to wear a mask while eating. Masks are not required on all waterpark attractions at Dollywood’s Splash Country or on select coasters and water attractions at Dollywood due to the dynamics of the attractions. Additional information about masks and a video detailing the safety and operational changes at the park are available for review at www.dollywood.com/playsafe and on the mobile app. Dollywood will continue monitoring any changes in the CDC or state guidelines and will make appropriate adjustments to the guest experience.

Felix Cavaliere By Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

f you’re a baby boomer (or at least love the music that baby boomers love), then you’ve heard - and loved the music of The Rascals. Songs like “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “A Beautiful Morning,” and “People Got to Be Free” jammed the airwaves back in the day. Even today we’ll stop and turn up the radio just a tad whenever those phenomenal songs come on our radios and streaming gadgets. The Rascals’ contribution to the soundtrack of our lives was rewarded in 1997 with their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. These days you can enjoy the spirit of The Rascals by catching their keyboardist, Felix Cavaliere, who is wonderfully and brilliantly keeping the band’s spirit alive with a healthy tour schedule. Reaching Cavaliere at his Nashville home recently, I rung him up just as he was finishing his regular morning workout. Commending him on doing something that I really should be doing (especially during this pandemic), he replied, “I have no choice, man. I’m used to working out pretty hard. I haven’t been doing it. I’m feeling it. Let me tell you.” Cavaliere then told me about a new album he’s been working on. “It’s fun, man. We came up with an idea last year. I said, ‘Look, you know what? Why don’t we take five songs that influenced you, re-record those kinds of like as a tribute to people like Ray Charles and Ben E. King, and then write five new songs that shows the thread of influence?’ “We’re having a ball. I mean, I’m just really enjoying it,

because I moved to Nashville in 1988-89 to write. I love to write. I love to use that part of my brain - the creativity part. So I get a chance to do that. I get a chance to play because, as I say, we started this before this all happened, so we got a good jump on it. So that’s the concept. “But the whole thing is to keep busy mentally and physically right now. I was talking to you earlier about my exercise program. I’m really used to working pretty hard in the gyms and stuff like that. That’s taken its toll. Well, it’s the same thing for your brain. You’ve got to keep your mind going, otherwise you go to sleep. I’m not quite ready. I still enjoy what I do - tremendously.” I brought up the body of work that Cavaliere - especially with The Rascals - and his peers have recorded and that it has clearly stood the test of time while, seemingly, the more recent music seems to quickly fade from memory. I asked him what he attributes that to. “Yeah, there’s a lot of reasons for that,” he said. “First of all, the era that we were in. You have to understand that our competition, for want of a better word, were some of the best that ever lived. I mean, you got the Beatles in there. You got the Stones in there. You got people like the Kinks and the Lovin’ Spoonful. The musical level, the creative ability, was very high. Kind of like in the art world during the Renaissance in France, when you had all these great impressionist paintings. That’s what we were experiencing. So the level was way up there, and the products were way up there. That’s the first thing and the easiest answer I can give you.

“The other answer I can give you is the fact that we were on Atlantic Records, which I’m very proud to say. I understand that everybody knows they had to make money, but they had a very, very high kind of bar also for quality. They had some of the finest minds in the engineering world, with Tom Dowd and these people that were behind the scenes.” I concluded by asking Cavaliere how he wants to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy is. “Well, basically, I want to be remembered mostly as a musician and positive messages, peaceful messages, civil rights messages, and as a good father and parent and husband. That’s fine with me... I mean, you make a contribution, and all you really want is people to realize that this happened; you were part of it; enjoyed it. That’s what I kind of leave around, you know.” And that he definitely does. There is much more to this interview that you can read in its entirety at www. boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

For more information, visit www.knoxalliance.com/knoxville-photo. Throughout the remainder of the Emporium, the Alliance continues to exhibit its Summer Members Show, which opened on June 5. The Summer Members Show features works by 134 artists who live and work in the region. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. Please note, the Emporium will be closed on Monday, July 6, for the holiday. Is Your Grout a Sponge?

T

hat sandy strip of grout between your tiles is a very important part of your tile. Without it, anything spilled on your floors would start an ecosystem of its own. Your grout is your first line of defense against soil, dirt, and liquids. A properly sealed grout line will protect the integrity of your floors, but a tile and grout floor that has not been sealed acts like a sponge, soaking up every nasty spill and particle of dirt it comes into contact with. New grout should always be properly sealed, cleaned regularly, and a new application of sealer should be applied every 1224 months thereafter. Cleaning your grout can be tricky. Scrubbing the grout may remove dirt in the surface of the grout but not eliminate the stain. Stains can then creep back to the surface again, causing frustration to the homeowner. Bathrooms pose the toughest challenge, since this room tends to be damp and provides a breeding ground for bacteria, mold, and mildew. Chemicals can cause discoloration and break down the integrity of your grout, leading to costly repairs. In addition, marble, granite, and high gloss tiles are especially sensitive to some

cleaners, which can lead to permanent damage. The best way to test whether your grout needs resealing is to place a few drops of water on the grout line and see if they remain on the grout surface or soak right in. If they disappear, it’s time to reseal. If you aren’t comfortable cleaning your grout, or if persistent stains are a concern, it’s time to call a professional. Surface Doc, inc. owner, John Fitzwilliam, says he gets more requests for tile and grout cleaning than any other service his company offers. “We use a four-step restoration process combining high heat, eco-friendly emulsifiers, adjustable pressure, and contained suction,” he said. “Once a surface is deep cleaned and sanitized, I recommend a high-quality sealer to keep it looking new.” Surface Doc uses patented tools that get down into the deep porous areas of your floors, and the result is remarkable. Give John a call today for a free, no-hassle cleaning demonstration and personal quote for your home. Surface Doc 865-567-1986 www.surfacedoc.com

Southern Skies Music Festival Confirms Initial 2021 Lineup

B

en Rector, The Dirty Guv’nahs, and The New Respects are officially confirmed for Southern Skies Music Festival 2021. The inaugural event, produced by Dogwood Arts and curated by The Dirty Guv’nahs, was rescheduled to May 15, 2021, due to the spread of COVID-19. (It was originally scheduled for May 16, 2020.) The event will feature musical acts across two stages, food trucks, craft beer, wine, specialty cocktails, a Maker Market, and more. From the very beginning, this event has been a passion project for everyone involved – and the team at Dogwood Arts, the Dirty Guv’nahs, and Born & Raised Productions look forward to celebrating with the entire Knoxville community in World’s Fair Park next spring. Festival organizers are actively working to confirm the rest of the lineup and will release details as they become available. Festival passes are on sale now at www. southernskiesmusicfestival.com. Tier 2 prices are $45 while supplies last, or go VIP for $150 (with access to premium viewing area, hangout space with private bars and restrooms, festival merchandise, and more). All 2020 tickets will be honored for the new date and require no further action from the ticket holder. The Guv’s live experience has been hailed as one of the best in the southeast, and according to Music Connection Magazine, “The Dirty Guv’nahs don’t just play music; they capture the human experience through song.” Likewise, Southern Skies will capture the spirit of Knoxville and honor the Dogwood Arts mission to promote emerging local and regional musical artists. Southern Skies is produced by Dogwood Arts and is the newest addition to their music programming, which includes Rhythm N’ Blooms Music Festival, Open Mic Nights in the Dogwood Gallery, and musical entertainment at the Dogwood Arts Festival. Dogwood Arts is working with Born & Raised Productions, the Knoxville-based music production company behind Sunset on Central, the Outpost, and Silent Disco Knox, to produce the festival. July In the Garden

Lisa Grugin

e are moving into the second half of the year, and it is time for you to go walk around in your yard and take stock of what is going on. Gardening and yard work tend to get a little less fun as the season progresses, so now is a good time to re-evaluate your situation. Grab a cup of coffee or tea (or whatever beverage you prefer) and something to take notes on and head outside. Here is what you need to check: » Start with looking up to check your trees for health. How does the canopy look? Is it nice and full or sparse? Do you have broken or damaged branches? Do you have woodpecker holes, loose bark, oozing holes, or mushrooms growing on the trunk? Are the leaves nice and green or are they yellowing? Do you have curling or spotted leaves? Do they have holes? If you see problem areas, please give us a call. If we can’t help you, we can give you the name of an arborist. » The next level down is shrubs. Look for damaged branches, discolored/spotted/curling leaves, and signs of insect damage. Before you go out and start spraying, however, please come in with a leaf sample and get a diagnosis. It is not unusual for our customers to treat repeatedly for insect damage, only to discover that their problem is actually fungal. I also blast my evergreens (and deciduous shrubs that aren’t blooming) with the water hose once a week to knock off any insects that are setting up housekeeping. Please look for bird nests before you do this! » Level three is annuals. We have reached the point where some of the plants you put out this spring are starting to get a little shaggy. July is a good time for a haircut. Trim them back and give them a nice boost with fertilizer and many of them will perk back up. If they have insect and disease problems, try neem oil first. If that doesn’t help, progress to stronger chemicals. If nothing seems to work, compost them and come in for fresh ones. Life is too short for ugly plants. » The fourth thing to check is any perennials that you have planted. Look for insects, disease, and nutrient deficiencies. If they are getting leggy, give them a haircut and a boost of fertilizer. Remove diseased leaves and make sure fallen leaves do not sit on the ground. Make a note of any that need to be transplanted or divided this fall. » Did you plant vegetables? 16 million Americans planted a veggie garden for the first time this year, so you are not alone if you did. Keep an eye on them to monitor for insects and disease, and keep harvesting! » Now we have reached the ground. What is going on at the base of your garden? How is your mulch? (It isn’t only for aesthetics, you know. It keeps moisture and temperature levels more stable for your plants.) Have you been lucky and gotten rain, or do you have cracks in your soil that you can stick a finger in? Do you have mole tunnels? Is something digging holes in your yard? Do you have small holes in your flower beds? Let us know what problems you are having, and we will help you find a solution. » The last task is for you to make a plan on where you want to go. If your yard is gorgeous, take photos so that you can replicate it next year. If there are some areas that

865-986-7229 are lacking, make plans to change things. What can you add, remove, or re-do to make it better? Now that you have that out of the way, let’s talk about what you can actually do during the summer months. » You can still plant some things. Annuals, perennials, grasses, and shrubs can be planted throughout the summer but will require a little extra love. If you are using a sprinkler system, make sure to monitor the amount of water it is putting out. A rain gauge will work, or you can use a tuna or cat food can. Both are about an inch tall, which is how much water you want to be reaching your plants each week. Early morning is the best time to run your system so that the sun dries the leaves. If you run your sprinkler during the afternoon, you might as well go out and spit on your plants. That’s about how much good it does. » You can still mulch. We keep brown and black mulch and pine straw bales available all year. » You can keep the birds happy. Keep your feeders and birdbaths clean and full. Birds are a gardener’s best friend because they eat so many of the problem bugs. » Finally, go out and enjoy your yard. Many of you have worked more in your yard this year than you ever have, so now is the time to reap what you have sown! We continue to have fresh plants arriving weekly, so stop in and pick out some things or let us know if you are having problems. Enjoy your summer! Planning a Successful Estate Sale

E

state sales, also referred to as tag sales in many areas of our country, are used to liquidate the personal possessions of an individual, family, or estate. These sales, which are growing in popularity, are generally the most efficient way to sell unneeded personal and household items resulting from the passing of a homeowner, downsizing, relocation, bankruptcy, or divorce. Although an efficient way to dispose of personal possessions, estate sales require a great deal of preparation that can seem overwhelming to many if you are unfamiliar with how to properly organize a sale of this scope. Much more involved than a yard or garage sale, a successful estate sale needs to be well organized. Items for sale should be divided into categories. Sales items are often catalogued. Displays are typically set up in the home with valuable items, particularly smaller pieces, displayed separately for security purposes. Next, you need to price your items, set your sale dates, advertise, then prepare yourself for the crowds of buyers. Sound daunting? An estate sale can easily become overwhelming, which is why a growing number of Tellico area residents are turning to the professionals at Premiere Consignment in Tellico Village for assistance in conducting an estate sale. At Premiere Consignment, we offer our clients a complete turnkey estate sale experience. We help organize, display, price, advertise, and sell those no longer needed personal and household items. We are with you every step of the way to make certain that your sale is the complete success you hoped it would be. At the end, the client is left with a check and a home that is cleared of every unwanted/unneeded item. There are other ways Premiere Consignment can help you, too. We can place remaining unsold items for sale in our Tellico Village retail showroom or use our extensive eBay sales platform to sell a variety of other sales items, such as collectibles, to buyers across the country and the world. Experienced in estate sales, why not let Premiere Consignment help you make your sale the success it deserves to be? Call Premiere Consignment at 865-458-9721 today to learn more or to schedule your estate sale. Premiere Consignment 320 Lakeside Plaza Loudon, TN 37774 865-458-9721 www.premiereconsignment.com

Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month

Z

eus is a 2-year-old male terrier/American Pit bull mix and weighs 53 pounds. Zeus loves people and cuddly blankets. He would do best in a home without other pets. He loves kids and car rides! Morris and Murphy were brought in by animal control and seem to be best buddies. Both seem to have lived some of their lives outdoors but are very much loving their soft kitty beds, canned and dry food, fresh water, and air conditioning. We are designating them as indoor cats now. Morris is a male orange tabby, approximately two years old. Murphy is also a male orange tabby but is only about nine months old. Gypsy may be a Calico/Golden Tabby mix about five years old. She was left at a friend’s home temporarily and never picked back up. She is quiet and a bit shy and very confused as to what happened, but she does enjoy back rubs and ear scratches. Wesley is a 3-year-old male orange tabby. Hecame to us as a stray, but we have reason to think he may have had an owner at one point since he had already been neutered. He is nosy, pushy for affection, and very sweet - all traits of orange guys! For some reason, orange tabbies will always have some sort of pattern in their coat no solid orange cats! About 80% of orange tabby cats are male. This certainly seems to point to some genetic link between sex and coat markings, although no one has seemed to pinpoint the exact factors. There is great information on how to introduce animals into a new home at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org under Pets/Helpful Hints. Check it out – there are many more “Helpful Hints” for pet caregivers provided there. All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. The Monroe County Animal Shelter has reopened, and Zeus and his friends are anxiously awaiting your visit! The shelter is currently filled to near maximum capacity, so we are looking for people to help foster some of the animals. Many of the animals are housebroken, sweet, and family-friendly. They are often placed in the shelter because their owners are no longer able to care for them. If you are interested, please email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call the shelter at 423-442-1015, and they will put you in touch with Cathy Barrett, Foster Coordinator. Also, the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office has placed the trustees on lockdown; therefore, the shelter is in desperate need of volunteers to walk the dogs and assist with other shelter needs. If you can help, please call the shelter. The MCFA Thrift Store is presently selling furniture via their Facebook page: “Thrift Store of MCFA.” Please check often to see postings throughout the day. GREAT deals… cash only. Someone would meet you at the store for you to pick up your new furniture cribs, sofas, tables, desks, cabinets, mirrors, dining room sets, TVs, etc. The Monroe County Animal Shelter partners with Finding Rover. By using facial recognition software, Finding Rover attempts to match found dogs with lost dogs and then locate the owners. This wonderful software is a free app available to dog owners and organizations. And cat owners shouldn’t fret. Finding Kitty is in the works! Another program the Monroe County Animal Shelter partners with is Pets for Patriots. Veterans can find a new sense of purpose and a new pet friend when they save a lastchance dog or cat: Well-adjusted animals who find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own, waiting for their hero. Visit www.stripes.com to read about the potential value of this program for those wounded and suffering from PTSD. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. Email animal.shelter@monroetn.com or call 423-4421015 for more information and to schedule a meet and greet with a pet, and check out all available pets on our website at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org. The shelter has reopened with the regular hours of Tuesday-Friday 114:30 and Saturday 11-2. The MCFA Thrift Store will open July 1st and 3rd from 1-4 pm. We will resume normal operations Wednesday-Saturday 10-4 beginning July 8. Masks will be required. A limited number of customers will be allowed in the store at any one time. We have missed our customers and look forward to seeing you again.

At The M Salon, the personal safety of our clients and our associates remains our top priority. Our services are by appointment, and our waiting area is closed. Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival Brings Bright Blooms to Smoky Mountains

D

ollywood’s inaugural Flower & Food Festival presented by Covenant Health blooms to life with a vibrant new event that adds another touch of dazzling color to the natural beauty that already surrounds the award-winning theme park. During this spectacular event, guests can explore larger-than-life plant sculptures adorned in half-a-million colorful flower blooms. These colossal displays reach heights up to 14 feet and create breathtaking displays celebrating the spirit of the Smoky Mountains. Floral carpet beds envelope walkways, embellish buildings, and fill flowerbeds throughout the park. Throughout the festival, the park stays open until 9:30 pm every night to allow families more time to make memories together. Additionally, each evening concludes with a fireworks show to put an exclamation point on the day. “I know everyone is tired after being cooped up inside for the last few months, but I think all of us probably appreciate our family and friends even more right now,” said Dolly Parton. “I’m glad we’re able to start welcoming folks back to Dollywood with a brand new festival to help them make fresh memories together. Things may look a little different, but when they see all those beautiful flowers in bloom, I think it will help them take a bit of a break from everything that’s been going on. “When we had the idea for this festival, I definitely gave them some input, because you know how much I love flowers,” she added, “but I was just delighted when my creative team told me their idea for the biggest flower display would be my mama sewing the Coat of Many Colors. I was so surprised, and I know she would be so proud they represented her in this way.” Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival brings Dolly’s dreams to life with floral displays blooming in a kaleidoscope of colors. In partnership with internationallyacclaimed Mosaicultures flower sculpting team, a multitude of flowers come to life throughout Dollywood as Smoky Mountain turtles, raccoons, frogs, and black bears. Dolly’s rich influence through song comes alive thanks to tributes of “I Will Always Love You” with a floral heart umbrella, as well as “Coat of Many Colors” with the marvelous scenic sculpture of her mother Avie Lee sewing the priceless garment. The festival takes its blooms and brilliance throughout Dollywood, starting with photo opportunities as soon as guests step foot through the turnstiles. Once in the park, guests quickly find themselves under an Umbrella Sky,

an awe-inspiring sight which features more than 600 hundred umbrellas dancing above their heads. Special “Instagram-able” photo locations allow families to capture special memories that will live on long after the festival flowers bloom. The colorful splendor created by an artful array of flowers and plants is accented by delicious dishes of mouth-watering festival flavors. Dollywood’s team of culinary experts dug deep into the traditions of Southern and Smoky Mountain cuisine to create garden-fresh items sure to delight. Items on the menu include grilled citrus shrimp over delta peas and rice, gyros, Greek orzo pasta, grilled chili lime skirt steak, chicken stir fry, zucchini fritters, lobster rolls, charcuterie in a cone, and pork sliders with pineapple chutney. Dessert highlights include chocolate-dipped macaroons, toasted coconut cupcakes, blueberry tarts, and chocolate ganache brownies. Guests looking for a way to cool off have

a number of refreshing beverages to enjoy during the festival. The selection includes strawberry guava, blueberry lavender lemonade, blood orange lemonade, and watermelon lime fresca. After much careful preparation, Dollywood Theme Park and Dollywood’s Splash Country Water Park are now open. Social distancing guidelines will limit the capacity of the parks on a daily basis. As a result, season passholders will be required to reserve the date and time they wish to visit, and general admission guests will purchase a date-based ticket to ensure all have a safer, socially-distanced experience. Reservations can be made at www.Dollywood.com/reservations and on the Dollywood mobile app, where a how-to video will demonstrate the process. Guests should book their reservations early to ensure the date of their choice. Additional information and a video detailing the safety and operational changes at the park are available for review at www.Dollywood. com/playsafe and on the mobile app.
