ome travel trends come and go, but others have staying power. Sports-themed travel is gaining momentum in 2018, and experts predict that it’s only going to get bigger. If you like the thrill of competition, the history of the game, and the joy of being a fan, consider sports-themed destinations for your next vacation.

Location

A prime example for sports-themed travel is Green Bay, Wisconsin. Whether you are a Packers fan or a football fanatic, this distinctive area is ideal for couples, families, or guy-and-girlfriend getaways - particularly the new Titletown development, which offers travelers an array of sportsthemed activities to explore, with something to tempt all of the senses.A 45-acre development adjacent to Lambeau Field, Titletown is the place to be, boasting a variety of amenities, a big brewery, and an impressive outdoor park experience with year-round programming. Check out a concert or start a pickup game of football on the artificial turf. Everyone feels welcome here.

Accommodations

Located just yards from Lambeau Field, LODGE KOHLER gives you a home field advantage in the heart of the action. The hotel design is rugged yet refined, and it commemorates the game with historic Biever family photos of the Green Bay Packers throughout the timeless brick building. Revel in the convenience and comfort of boutique-style hotel offerings, featuring (continued on page 2A)

warm and spirited accommodations, on-site dining, encapsulating spa, family pool, and a fitness center featuring yoga classes from the resident yoga instructor. The authentic Midwestern hospitality will make you feel at home no matter how far you’ve traveled.

Attractions

Of course the time-honored draw of Green Bay has been and always will be Lambeau Field - one of the most storied and hallowed stadiums in the United States. At the Packers Hall of Fame in the Lambeau Field Atrium, visitors can discover interactive displays, guided tours, and the seasonal Packers Training Camp. Explore more of the sports team’s past on the Oneida Nation Walk of Legends or the Packers Heritage Trail, which pays homage to the buildings, businesses, and people that have historical significance to the team. Team history abounds around every corner of Green Bay’s scenic and extensive urban trail and may be traveled by foot, Segway, or trolley.

Celebrations

There’s even more worth celebrating this year in Green Bay: The Packers have spent a century on the gridiron. The 100 Seasons

celebration will feature numerous events in Titletown and throughout Green Bay, culminating with an epic 100th birthday party on August 11, 2019. Want more than football? Neighboring Lambeau Field, the Resch Center - home of the Green Bay Phoenix men’s college basketball team and USHL Green Bay Gamblers hockey team - offers year-round entertainment, as it hosts an onslaught of spectacular national touring artists and family entertainment on and off the ice.

Eats and Sweets

Hunger will lead you to LODGE KOHLER for memorable dining. Meet at Leaps & Bounds Cafe for a quaint breakfast, lunch, or coffee perk-up featuring signature Nitro Draft Coffee. Revel in the sweeping views of the stadium from the outdoor terrace and panoramic windows at Taverne in the Sky, which features modern rotisserie cuisine for lunch and dinner. For dessert or a sweet treat, get a taste of artfully crafted KOHLER Original Recipe Chocolates. Craft your perfect sports-themed travel experience to Green Bay for a game day or any day. Amish Excellence: You Imagine, We Guide

C

By Angie Carroll, Owner of Amish Excellence ustomer order is our specialty at Amish Excellence. Whether you’re in the market for dining, bedroom, or home office furniture, here you will discover endless possibilities. We offer Amish hand-crafted solid hardwood furniture. No veneers, laminates, pressboard, or imports. The process for creating beautiful custom furniture for your home is easy. With so many options available, it may seem overwhelming, but our design team will help by listening to your needs and preferences and offering suggestions. Let your imagination be your inspiration. The first step is simply to visit the design showroom, where you will find examples of various American hardwood species, dozens of options in finishing, and beautiful fabric and leather selections. You don’t have to settle for onesize-fits-all, factory-made furniture that is imported from China, Vietnam, Brazil, and Africa. It’s important to buy American hardwoods for several reasons. One of the most important being that the wood and other materials are not treated with pesticides and other chemicals that continue to emit toxins into your home long after you made the purchase. Amish furniture is made from domestic hardwoods such as maple, cherry, oak, and hickory. By the way, pine and poplar are not considered hardwoods; therefore, these woods aren’t used to make fine Amish-built furniture. When you come into Amish Excellence, bring photos and dimensions of your space. If you have favorite styles, we’d like to hear about those as well. Chances are that we can build exactly what you desire and help you determine what you want if you simply aren’t certain. Our team will help you create individual masterpieces that will become the center of attention in every room in your home. We’ll help you determine style, dimensions, wood species, stains, and finishes, as well as leather and fabric choices. Our furniture prices are competitive, often lower than big stores offering furniture that is of lesser quality and craftsmanship. Additionally, the choices available at Amish Excellence are limitless. When working with a limited budget, start with one piece and add to it whenever you like. For example, buy the bed and add a dresser in the next few months. Most factories will discontinue styles after a period of time. You’ll be able to add more pieces of furniture for many years. As mentioned earlier, buying American products is important. Even more important is to support local small businesses. Here, you have someone locally you know will help if there’s ever any question or problem with your purchase. Placing orders for groceries or clothing online may be ok for some, but it’s rarely a good idea to make a significant purchase such as furniture online. We encourage you to visit Amish Excellence to explore the many possibilities in custom furniture. Carefully hand-crafted. Beautifully American. Amish Excellence 613 N. I

From the Publisher

t has been a very hot, humid summer here in East Tennessee, and those “lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer” prove to continue throughout August. Typically school begins this month, so for many, it is the last chance of the season to take a family vacation. And then the closer time comes to that first day back hitting the books, there is the back-to-school shopping rush with the focus on that first football game of the fall season. Summer is just too short, but it eventually ushers in cooler days. In this edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we and our advertisers continue to celebrate summer with bargains on seasonal items and services. Also, August has many family friendly events and entertainment that will enhance your summer fun like concerts and festivals. Summer will be past before you know it, so get out there and enjoy all that Knoxville and East Tennessee have to offer.

The Art of Furniture Consignment By Becky Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

F

or years, individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not so much anymore. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell any number of household items by themselves. In fact, things have gotten so bad that those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the effort? Do you really want to invite strangers into your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying no-shows? We launched Premiere Consignment six years ago with the goal of helping our neighbors sell their gently used, name brand furniture, art pieces, home décor items, and Oriental rugs without all of the hassle associated with attempting to sell their unused household items themselves. We offer our consigners a complete turnkey environment, which greatly enhances their potential to sell their items at the highest

possible prices. And our convenient retail showroom location and hours, in addition to our print and online advertising, ensures that your items will be seen by even more qualified buyers. Also, Premiere Consignment handles the entire transaction from beginning to end. No sitting at home waiting for strangers to arrive or wondering if their check is good. We also offer you the opportunity to market many of your items online using our very successful eBay store. So forget the ad in the local paper or on Craigslist, put away the yard sale signs, and discover the safe, easy, and most convenient way to sell your gently used furniture, décor, art, and Oriental rugs – the no-hassle, Premiere Consignment way. Just call 865-458-9721!

“A Meal with Amelia” to Raise Scholarship Funds for Women

P

.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) Chapter AU, Maryville, will host “A Meal with Amelia,” a gourmet brunch meal and program, at 10 am on Saturday, August 11. The site of the event is First Baptist Church, Maryville (202 West Lamar Alexander Parkway). Tickets are $25 each. Tables for six may be reserved in advance. In addition to the program and brunch, the event will include baked goods for sale and a silent auction. All proceeds will be donated to P.E.O. Philanthropies to support women seeking higher education. To purchase tickets, contact Leslie Lucas at lkl2@lucasfr.com or Liz Blackburn at Ewb21@aol.com. “A Meal with Amelia” will be presented by local caterer and nutrition expert, Amelia Geis-Scott, who will share her magic tricks for a delicious brunch. Amelia moved to Maryville in 1998 from North Carolina, where she was born and raised. She went to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she received her degree in Nutrition. Amelia worked for Williams-Sonoma, Inc. for 16 years in management and teaching cooking classes. In 2002, she attended cooking school in Thailand, and she taught cooking classes for Blount Memorial Hospital for six years. In 2011, Amelia began running and cooking for the Welcome Table at both New Providence Presbyterian and Maryville First United Methodist churches. She has also undertaken cooking for Celebrate Recovery and other non-profit groups. She is married to Roger Scott and has two sons, Liam and Jack. P.E.O. International supports six educational philanthropies. Local chapters raise funds and recommend candidates. In the last year, Chapter AU successfully recommended Tennessee women for grants and scholarships valued at more than $26,000 and raised more than $3,000 to support the endowed philanthropies. All funds raised by Chapter AU for “A Meal with Amelia” will be used to support these philanthropies: 1. Educational Loan Fund (ELF), which makes loans between $12,000-$20,000 to qualified women at 2% simple interest who desire higher education and who need financial assistance. 2. Project for Continuing Education (PCE), a need-based grant program providing onetime financial assistance to women whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to complete a degree or certification. 3. The International Peace Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States and Canada. 4. P.E.O. Scholar Awards are one-time, competitive, merit-based awards for women of the United States and Canada who are pursuing a doctoral level degree at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Priority is given to women who are well established in their programs, study, or research. The current maximum award is $15,000. 5. P.E.O. Star Award, a non-renewable $2,500 scholarship for graduating high school senior women which must be used in the academic year following graduation. 6. Cottey College, a fully accredited four-year independent liberal arts and sciences college for women in Nevada, Missouri, owned and supported by the P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1927. 6A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2018

I

By James Patterson n a recent meeting, American Legion Post 256 once again hosted lecturer and author, Rachael Yarnell Thompson. Through her research and role as educator at the George C. Marshall home/museum site in Leesburg, Virginia, she has extensive knowledge of General Marshall. The General is recognized for distinguished service in both World Wars, earned the rank of Five-Star General, and held positions as United States Chief of Staff of the Army, Secretary of State, and Secretary of Defense. He negotiated wartime strategy alongside President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sr., and it was these inter dealings with President “FDR” that was the subject of Mrs. Thompson’s detailed and interesting lecture. She described many of the behind the scenes situations, which described General Marshall’s influence as FDR’s counsel during the planning and execution of World War II and most notably of the Normandy Invasion. For more information about the American Legion, contact Commander, Vic Vickery, at 423-884-6476 or visit www.tellicolakepost256.org.

Ticked Off

A

s we enter the Dog Days of Summer, most everyone in East Tennessee has come in contact in one way or another with at least one tick. These pesky parasites are often thought of as an insects, but they are actually arachnids. Here are a few helpful hints should you find yourself face to face with one of these tiny little bloodsuckers. Ticks are tiny little eight-legged creatures that embed their heads into the skin of their host and feed on their blood. We are most likely to come into contact with ticks during outdoor activities, but as many people have indoor animals these days, ticks can hitch

a ride inside on our pets also. Tick bites are most often harmless, and here are a couple of helpful hints should you encounter one this summer. As hair stylists, we encounter a great number of ticks on the scalps of our guests. This is obviously a favorite place for a tick to find a place of shelter and steady food supply. At home, if we simply do a thorough scalp massage on ourBrian K. Whitehead selves after outdoor activities, they can easily be discovered Managing Partner before there is any time for The Village Salon problems to occur. Once you have found an embedded tick, the The Village Salon first thing you need to do is 222 Village Square to remove it as quickly as in Tellico Village possible. In order to safely Styling Techniques 865-458-9332 remove the tick, simply use a thevillagesalon@aol.com pair of tweezers to grasp the arachnid as close to the skin as possible and use a slow and smooth upward motion until the tick is removed. The bite area should then be disinfected with rubbing alcohol, and the person doing the removal should do the same with their hands and the tweezers used on the job. In most tick cases, this is the end of the story; however, if the bite area is not looking better the next day, it may be a good idea to consult your physician. You never know what you can run into during your salon visit, but should your stylist encounter a tick on your next appointment, you will know exactly what to do.

In the Footsteps of Sergeant York,

A Feature Exhibition at the Museum of East Tennessee History, Extended Through August 26th

D

ue to the overwhelming response from the public, the Museum of East Tennessee History is extending the very popular exhibition, In the Footsteps of Sergeant York, through August 26th. If you haven’t experienced life in the trenches, now is your chance to see the traveling exhibition from the Museum of the American Military Experience, showcasing groundbreaking York research and allowing visitors to retrace the steps of one of America’s bestknown military heroes. The exhibition will also be on display for the East Tennessee History Fair on Saturday, August 18, which will feature World War I Living History, a WWI vintage baseball game of Army vs. Navy at the historic Bill Meyer field, and tours of the old Knoxville High and “Doughboy” statue. About In the Footsteps of Sergeant York Between 2006 and 2009, an international team of historians, archeologists, and geographers traveled to the Western Front battlefields of World War I to rediscover and

document where Fentress County-native Sergeant Alvin C. York made his heroic stand against overwhelming odds and was awarded the Medal of Honor for his courage under fire. Sergeant York is one of the most decorated and colorful soldiers of World War I. He was born of humble beginnings in Pall Mall as the third of 11 children and raised in a one-room log cabin. Nearly 100 years ago, on October 8, 1918, York displayed valor and courage worthy of a Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Croix de Guerre, the Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur, and later, a major motion picture, when he single-handedly killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 more in a battle in the Argonne Forest in France. Until now, the movie Sergeant York, staring Gary Cooper, has provided the most compelling story of York. The exhibition, produced by the Museum of the American Military Experience, includes 18 exhibit panels, eight exhibit cases of artifacts, a documentary film, and a supporting interactive website. The East

Tennessee Historical Society augmented the exhibition with East Tennessee stories and artifacts. It includes a bible carried by Sgt. York during WWI and later carried by a friend’s son who had it with him in WWII and every day until he died at the age of 94, as well as examples of American and German gas masks, U.S. uniforms, medals, banners, firearms, and wartime souvenirs. One of the most compelling features of the exhibit is that visitors are invited to walk through a life-sized trench much like the ones American troops hunkered down in during the war. Museum visitors will develop a sense of York’s home life through a sampling of items from the York home, experience the sounds of war and machine gun fire, view clips from the famous movie portraying Sergeant York’s life, and take away a copy of his draft card, where he claims his exemption from the draft is that he “don’t want to fight.” About East Tennessee Historical Society Established in 1834, the East Tennessee

Historical Society is widely acknowledged as one of the most active history organizations in the state and enjoys a national reputation for excellence in programming and education. For 184 years, the East Tennessee Historical Society has been helping East Tennesseans hold on to our unique heritage, recording the events, collecting the artifacts, and saving the stories that comprise the history we all share. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm, Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. The museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center (601 South Gay Street in Knoxville). For more information about the exhibition, scheduling a school tour, or visiting the museum, call 865-215-8824, email eths@eastTNhistory.org, or visit www.easttnhistory.org.

It’s Still Summertime

By Vickie Saladin, Owner of Gallery on Main

ow that nearly two-thirds of our summer vacation time has already past, our thoughts, which should come as no surprise, turn to enjoying our remaining vacation time to its fullest. Our remaining days are filled with plans to experience a whole host of summertime activities that we all love, including fishing, swimming, boating, hiking, and travel. Gallery on Main has a great selection of paintings, wood carvings, and other mediums created by local and regional artists that capture many of the summertime activities. If you treasure your summertime memories, why not let Gallery on Main help you select that perfect piece that will create a lifetime of memories for you and your loved ones? Items that would be just perfect include a fisherman gnome by Karen Stevens, a wooden carved Smokies black bear and a fisherman by Phil Pugh, a ceramic fishing boat by Charles Schwaner, and a bench and table by Fred Wallace. Also, a special note to our readers and customers. The last couple of years have been a blessing to both my husband and myself. Your friendship, support, and words of encouragement have truly been a source of strength to us. But, as so often is the case as we age, we experience health challenges that are God’s gentle reminder that life is all too brief and precious. We have recently made the decision to move on to that next season of our lives, which sadly means that we will be selling Gallery on Main. If you or someone you know has any interest in continuing or furthering our efforts to promote our many local and regional artists, as well as the arts in historic downtown Sweetwater, we would greatly appreciate it if you would pass on our contact information to them. Those interested can contact me at 423-337-7400 Tuesday through Saturday. Once again, I would like to thank you for allowing us to bring so many talented artists to you through our consignment Gallery on Main in historic downtown Sweetwater.

thens Community Center presents Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird on Friday and Saturday, August 17 & 18 and 24 & 25, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, August 19 & 26, at 2 pm at The Arts Center, located at 320 N. White Street in Athens. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students. It’s 1935, and racial tensions are high in Maycomb, Alabama. Nonetheless, young Jean Louise Finch - or Scout, as she is fondly called - manages to live a rather carefree, privileged existence, insulated from issues of race. All that changes when Scout watches her father, Atticus Finch, defend an innocent man, Tom Robinson, against a potential death sentence, which looms threateningly against him because of racial prejudice. Scout begins to realize that just because society portrays something as being true doesn’t mean that it actually is fact. With the help of Atticus and her older brother, Jem, Scout learns that “growing up” often means doing what is right, even when it comes at great cost. To Kill A Mockingbird is an American masterpiece about the power of childhood innocence, morality, and love. However, it is important to note that the author, Harper Lee, always defined it as a simple love story. The cast includes Jason Carusillo as Atticus Finch, Emma Stratton as Scout Finch, Lauren Trew as Jean Louise Finch (older Scout), Coltyn Parks as Jem Finch, Jason Carusillo as Atticus Finch, Cynthia McCowan as Calpurnia, Sophia Chamberlain as Dill, Whitney Kimball Coe as Maudie Atkinson, Shelley Griffith as Walter Cunningham, Joshua L. Bragg as Reverend Sykes, Ben Burchfield as Heck Tate, Judi C. Griffith as Stephanie Crawford, Joe Littleton as Nathan Radley, Bailey Dufty as Boo Radley, Barbara Morgan as Mrs. Dubose, Jonathan Berry as Tom Robinson, Megan Mooney as Helen Robinson, Wade Stone as Judge Taylor, Brad Jewell as Mr. Gilmer, Brad McKenzie as Bob Ewell, and Katie Bragg as Mayella Ewell. “W

e bought our lake lot in 2004 and talked with several builders before deciding to go with Keener Homes. We made a point to meet with Kit regularly when we were about 3 years out and he provided lots of good suggestions regarding the style of home that would work with the slope of the land. When it came time to break ground, we were prepared to encounter rock (our lot is in Tellico Village in Mialaquo Point), and sure enough - we did! This is when we were so glad that we had an experienced builder like Kit on our team.

Kit and his excavating crew came up with a solution to move the house closer to the lake so we could still have a walkout basement. He also worked with an engineer to make sure that the fourth corner of the home was on concrete since the other 3 corners were on rock. He also worked with us to develop a plan for some ‘creative erosion control’ so that we did not need to remove all the large rocks that resulted from the excavation - instead, they were repurposed to help with our landscaping and erosion control. In addition to building a quality home, we got so much more in terms of Kit’s creative problem solving, which saved us lots of money in the long run all things considered given the challenges we encountered with our lot.” — Ed and Barb Park

Community Church at Tellico Village Celebrates its 30th Anniversary with a Commemorative Quilt By Julie Best, Chair of the 30th Anniversary Celebration Team

T

hroughout the year of 2018, the Community Church at Tellico Village is celebrating its 30th anniversary. So far the church has enjoyed a Charter Member Recognition Sunday and a community-wide Ice Cream Social. Just recently a Commemorative Quilt was presented to the church as a part of this year-long celebration. A commemorative quilt is a great way to have a tangible reminder of what this church means to Tellico Village, the surrounding community, and even beyond. What do a quilt and a church have in common? More than you might think. Generally speaking, for a quilt to be attractive, there must be high contrast – light colors and darker colors, fabrics with small prints, and fabrics with larger prints. And, sometimes even an element of surprise. But, in all of that contrast, the combined fabrics must complement each other and work toward the overall beauty of the quilt. Likewise, generally speaking, for a church to be vibrant, there will be a variety of opinions among the members, there will be people with different skills and abilities, but in all of these differences, the

overall mission of presenting the love of God to others is the entire focus of the congregation. Three women worked on the construction of the quilt: Pat Schwartz, Judy Bland, and me. The quilt is unique to our church, not just a “religious” quilt.” At the front of the sanctuary is a beautiful stained glass window overlaid by a wooden cross. That element became the focal point of the quilt. Since we are celebrating the 30 years of our existence, we wanted to incorporate something that would link our early days with the current time. Our church has two distinct steeples – the one on Founder’s Chapel, called The Cross in Every Direction, and the one on the new sanctuary, which features a cross pointing to the sky. Both of these steeples are symbols of the focus of our church, which is to lead people to Christ. The quilt header includes photos of these steeples to remind folks of the past and the present. The quilt is named Gratitude, because we have much to be grateful for – we are grateful for God’s presence in our lives, we are grateful for this church which serves as the conduit for all our members as they share the love of God

with others, and we are grateful for all that this church means to our community. Several people were involved in making this project a reality. In addition to the ladies constructing the quilt, John Ouderkirk took the photos of the church steeples, Janet Armstrong did the beautiful quilting, and David Brunson made the lovely hanging device. The Community Church at Tellico Village was founded when Tellico Village was just developing into a community. For 30 years, the Community Church has called people who come here from many directions to come and follow Christ in this, their new home. That is still the message of the Community Church today. Our quilt is very simple, but that, too, is the message of the church – just keep your eyes on the cross. Everyone is invited to come by the church to see the quilt. As you enter the front doors of the church, look to the left. The quilt will be hanging on a wall nearby. We hope the quilt will serve as a reminder of what this church means to its members and to our community.

r. John R. Orr, Pastor of Music and Worship at The Community Church at Tellico Village, recently announced the line-up for the church’s annual Fine Arts Concert Series. This season’s series will include seven diverse and rich performances that include: » Cantus Men’s Vocal Assemble “Alone Together” on Thursday, September 27 » Knoxville Choral Society: Handel Masterworks featuring selections from “Messiah” on Sunday, November 4 » A Community Church Christmas on December 9 & 10 » Lenoir City High School Choir, Jordon Cross, Conductor on Thursday, February 21 » The Tellico Village Singers and Tellico Voices on Sunday and Tuesday, March 3 & 5 » The Janoska Ensemble from Vienna to Liverpool a Tribute to the Beatles on Sunday, April 7 » The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra on Thursday, May 2 Ticket prices for the concerts are only $10 except for the Christmas Celebration and the Lenoir City High School Choir, which are free. All concerts are at 7 pm. “The Community Church Concert Series is a non-profit fine arts series hosted and sponsored by the Community Church at Tellico Village,” said Stephen Prevatte, Senior Pastor. “We are very pleased to be able to share the series with not only Tellico Village, but the surrounding community. All who love and enjoy music are welcome.” The series is funded entirely through the annual donor drive and ticket sales. Dr. John R. Orr serves as the Executive Director and Jan Martin is Music Team Leader. For more information on the individual concerts, visit www.tellicochurch.com/events and click newsletters. Those interested in becoming a 2018-20198 Concert Series Donor can call the church office at 865-458-1516 or inquire by email at john@tellicochurch.org. The Community Church at Tellico Village is located at 130 Chota Lane. Our services are at 8 and 10:15 am on Sunday. We call ourselves a “community” church because we believe Jesus made himself available to the whole world, not just a little group of select people. We’re not overly troubled by folks who come to us with different beliefs, ideas, or experiences. We find reason to “commune” with each other not because we all think or believe alike, but because we are all seeking the same thing – a Way to a better world, a Truth that sets people free, and a Life that is abundantly full and meaningful. ext month will be 15 years since the world lost the great Johnny Cash. Cash was brash, creative, and even bleeding edge in his approach to music and performing. If you have ever wondered: “What if he were young and alive today?” “What if he were writing and performing music today?” The answers to those questions just may be in the person of his eldest grandchild, Thomas Gabriel. It was because of Long Way Home and coordinating with his label, Cashtown Records, and his publicist team at Blue Moon Experience Group that I had the privilege of speaking with Thomas by phone at his Middle Tennessee home. Because his name isn’t yet a household name, Thomas gave me the Reader’s Digest version of his story. “I’m the oldest grandchild of Johnny Cash,” he said. “I’m originally from Ventura, California, and moved to the Nashville area when I was young. My mother was extremely young when she had me, so I spent a lot of time with my grandparents; I spent a lot of time on the road and in motels, hotels, buses, and planes - that sort of thing. I called it ‘The Fish Bowl’ growing up. We were in the bowl looking out to see all these faces every time we pulled into a new city. That’s where I started. “I got into music early on. In the early ‘90s, I was working on some projects and felt pretty good about it, actually. I had a pretty good EP together. I played it for my grandpa, and he said he liked what he heard, but because of that, he wanted me to have a backup plan - go finish

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

school or get a job or whatever - in case it falls through. He said, ‘I don’t want you to put everything into music quite yet. You’re too young.’ “I had just turned 21, and he said he wanted me to go to the police academy. So I went to the police academy. I was a police officer for just less than eight years. During that time, I always had addiction problems like my grandfather did. Same chemicals. Same type of addictions. Pills got involved, and that caused some series of events that led to me having to resign. Soon after I started building an arrest record that got to be pretty lengthy pretty quick. The next thing you know, I also did about seven-and-ahalf years in prison. About the same amount of time that I was a police officer, I was in prison! “While I was in prison, I worked on music again. It was the first time in a while that I had a clear enough head to sit down and really start putting my time and efforts back into that. It’s a God thing that that happened. “When I got out, I immediately started working on the projects that I had started in prison. That was in 2013 when I got out, so it’s been about five years now. When I got out, I still had some chemical issues, but I went to a rehab facility. After I was clean a year, Brian Oxley, the executive producer of the album, called me up and said, ‘Hey, you’ve been clean a year. You’ve had time to get your stuff together. Are you ready to hit this full-force?’ I said, ‘Yeah, let’s do it!’ So we’ve been doing it ever since.” Thomas described his music.

“I’ve tried to put a genre on what I do and what the music is. I’ve got a lot of influences. I’ve got country influence, obviously. I’ve got folk influence, obviously. Granddad didn’t even call himself a country artist. He called himself a folk artist. My album is a mix of rock with some Indie mixed in with some country mixed in with some – I don’t know. It’s just whatever I’m feelin’. “My big thing is, like I said, I want to get it all out. But also, because of my history and because of the things I’ve been through, the prison thing and the drug experiences and all that, I kinda see it as there are so many times that I should’ve been dead, that now it really is about what I can do for everybody else. If my album, my presence, my show, whatever helps a couple of people that are going through the same thing that I was stuck into for so long, that, right there, I think that God gave me that extra chance. If I didn’t do that, then I wouldn’t accomplish anything.” You can read the extended version of this interview at www.boomerocity.com and keep up with Thomas at www.ThomasGabriel.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

ORCMA’s 74th Season is Distinctly Oak Ridge

T

he Oak Ridge Civic Music Association has announced its 74th concert season – Distinctly Oak Ridge – with concerts beginning in August and culminating in April 2019. Audience members will experience jazz, klezmer, Americana, film, Broadway, folk, and classical music, highlighted by the trumpet, oboe, cello, organ, violin, and voice. The season opens on Sunday, August 26, at 3 pm with the Free Family Concert “What’s Up at the Symphony,” featuring music from Looney Tunes and the dazzling sister-and-brother violin duo of Lydia and Garren Anderson, winners of the 2018 Youth Aliyah Concert sponsored by Oak Ridge Hadassah. “The Free Family Concert is a wonderful opportunity for families and children to experience the world of a symphony orchestra,” said Dan Allcott, Music Director. “We’ll play fun music that will make you laugh out loud, and you will be star struck by the youth talent featured on stage and in the lobby. An instrument petting zoo caps off the joy of music making.” Back by popular demand, the Tesla String Quartet and Thomas Gallant collaborate in music for strings and oboe to open the Oak Ridge Chamber Music Series on Sunday, September 23, at 3 pm at Pollard Auditorium. “There is no shortage of exceptional chamber musicians eager to perform in Oak Ridge,” said Bill Schwenterly, Chamber Music Series Chairperson. “Our audience will also hear performances by the Cumberland Piano Trio, the Kosower & Oh Cello & Piano Duo, and Big Galut(e) Klezmer Ensemble.” The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra & Chorus subscription series opens on Saturday, September 29, at 7:30 pm in a concert featuring a wide variety of music representing America. Jaclyn Johnson, Chorus Director, will lead the ensemble in music by Randall Thompson set to poetry by Robert Frost. “The entire concert is one that audience members of all ages can connect to,” said Johnson. ORCMA is a proud participant in the Penny4Arts programming that enables all youth 18 and under to attend any ORCMA concert for free during the 2018–2019 season. Additionally, each concert will have an element of interest to youth. “Maestro Allcott has curated a season that meets our mission on many levels, and the residency presented by Mark Kosower, Principal Cellist of The Cleveland Orchestra, provides a wonderful offering for the community at large and in particular for students,” said Lisa Muci Eckhoff, Executive Director. Kosower will lead a Free Masterclass for ORSO cellists and their students, area music teachers and their students, and anyone interested in learning more about music through the classical cello repertoire. Kosower will be joined by his wife, Jee-Won Oh, on the Chamber Music Series and will close his residency with a performance of two cello concertos with

In March, the ORSO & Chorus join forces for the Tennessee premier of Symphony: This Will Be Our Reply, composed by Lucas Richman after Leonard Bernstein’s speech “An Artist’s Response to Violence.” Beethoven’s magnificent Symphony #3 Eroica is also on the program. Rounding out the subscription series, the Oak Ridge Symphony strings will perform a rousing finale entitled Chamber Delights & Dances with Concertmaster Karen Kartal and Principal Oboist Ayca Yayman in the spotlight. Susan Shor, Chairperson of the Free Coffee Concert Series, anticipates another year of outstanding performances by locally based musicians. “Visit the ORCMA website, sign up for the ORCMA eNewsletter, and watch for flyers around town advertising these fabulous programs,” said Shor. Your Biggest Financial Threat in Retirement Might Surprise You

W

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

hile most retirees worry about stock market downturns, an even bigger financial threat is an unexpected health event that Medicare doesn’t cover. The average cost of home health care and assisted living is more than $40,000/year and a full-skilled care facility is more than $70,000/year. This retirement planning decision is truly a family one – if you don’t make plans to cover these costs, the burden falls to your adult children, who are trying to save for their own retirement and their kids’ education. That is not a scenario anyone wishes for their children! Several options exist to pay for home health and longterm care costs: 1. Self-insure and rely on family members Pros: If you never need long-term care, you haven’t spent money on unnecessary premiums. Cons: A couple’s funds can be depleted providing care for the first spouse, leaving the second spouse with few options. Additionally, the psychological and physical toll on the caregiving spouse is significant. 2. Let my money run out and rely on the government Pros: Minimal cost. Cons: Medicaid requires you to be impoverished and

gives you little control over the facility in which you will live. It does not cover home health or assisted living. 3. Use traditional long term care insurance Pros: Annual premiums provide insurance benefits for a variety of home health, assisted living, and skilled facilities. Cons: Premiums do increase over time, and it has the “use it or lose it” stigma of paying for something you may never use. 4. Asset-based long term care insurance Pros: This is, by far, my favorite option. It allows you to reposition a portion of your savings into a type of life policy that provides a multiplied amount of your investment, tax-free, if you need long-term care. And there is no “use it or lose it” – your investment simply turns into an inheritance for your heirs, or you can even cancel the policy and request your money back. Cons: Need to have the necessary investment mini-

mum of $35,000 already saved, though a 10-year payment plan is available. There is even insurance available for people who already need long-term care and are afraid they will run out of money. As a financial planner, my job is to protect my clients’ financial lives. Get started today – call my office to schedule a complimentary conversation. Your family will thank you. “T

he opening of the Monroe County Friends of Animals Thrift Store was a success any way you wish to define it,” said Bob Korts, Monroe County Friends of Animals board member. “People were lined up to get in when we opened, and the parking lot was filled all day. I don’t have the figures for sales we did, but I am confident it is a record.” The grand opening included a ribbon cutting ceremony attended by Monroe County Chamber of Commerce President, Brandy Gentry, Monroe County Economic Director, Richard Kirkland, Monroe County Commissioner, Mitch Ingram, Monroe County Friends of Animals board members, volunteers, and thrift store shoppers. “This is an exciting day for Monroe County Friends of Animals, an opportunity for this thrift store to be in a prime location, that will ultimately support such a need and a wonderful cause in our county,” said Ingram. “Thank you to all the volunteers and donors who support MCFA.” The store is conveniently located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville across from the Kentucky Fried Chicken store. Thrift hours are 10 am to 4 pm Wednesday through Saturday. The thrift store is an important revenue generator for Monroe County Friends of Animals. It is believed the new location will not only produce more revenue for the organization, but also create better visibility the organization in general. There is discussion to examine the possibility of showcasing some adoptable cats and dogs at the store. Monroe County Friends of Animals has already purchased land on which to build a new shelter. Even though this should be a county responsibility, the organization along with huge support from the community has worked in partnership with Monroe County since 2004 in providing safe and humane treatment for homeless and abandoned cats and dogs. “We are doing our part to assure that Monroe County has a modern animal shelter and are confident the county will do everything possible to partner with us in obtaining that goal,” said Walt Marshall, the organization’s board president.

About Monroe County Friends of Animals Our mission is to support the Monroe County Animal Shelter both monetarily in animal rescue efforts and with hands-on assistance in the shelter. Since its founding in 2004, the organization has contributed hundreds of thousands of people hours to the shelter and millions of dollars of funding to help convert Monroe County’s record of humane animal treatment from a dismal one to one that its citizens can be proud. This improvement would not have occurred without the incredible support the citizens of Monroe County have provided Monroe County Friends of Animals. As the organization increases its activities to raise funding for the new shelter, it is seeing increased support by those citizens who wish to see the continuation of humane treatment of abandoned and homeless cats and dogs. Large Dogs Available MCFA Pets of the Week at the Monroe County B Animal Shelter

W

e’ve chosen Piper, Rosebud, and Shelly to highlight the wonderful larger dogs who are still calling the Monroe County Animal Shelter home. For many of our larger dogs, finding a home through PetSmart events is one of the few options they have since they generally do not qualify for rescues or transports because of their size or breed. Unfortunately, none of our nine transported dogs were adopted at the last event. Larger dogs are harder to adopt from shelters for the same reasons. They are often some of the most loving and gentle dogs that are passed over by adopters because of pre-conceived assumptions. For even the most active dogs, basic training in a loving home is all they would need to become the ideal dog for a lifetime. We do offer discounted training lessons with a qualified trainer for those dogs and families who just need a good start. Piper is a 2-year-old Labrador/Terrier mix and an all-round great dog. He smiles at you to get your attention, walks well on a leash, and looks like he’s prancing when he walks. Rosebud is a 3-year-old Pitbull Terrier mix. She is easy to handle and is a well-behaved, loving gentle giant. Shelly is an 8-month-old Plot Hound mix. She’s very sweet, but quiet at the shelter - just waiting for her forever family to bring her home. It takes much planning to bring our animals to an adoption event - is it worth it, especially when the adoption numbers ar-

en’t great? YES, for many reasons. The animals get a chance to be out of the shelter environment for a day, where they will experience special attention. We raise awareness for shelter animals. We network with animal rescue groups and PetSmart staff. Because of our participation, PetSmart donates several boxes of much needed cat and dog food for the shelter. The public shows their appreciation for what we do by donating cash to our donations box. None of this just happens, it takes volunteers. There are so many ways that you can help. Give the shelter a call at 423-442-1015. MCAS, along with many other open admission shelters across the country, are finding their kennels constantly full. Thanks to rescue groups and transports, we are able to save many more lives and open our kennels to receive even more homeless animals. There is a lot involved in preparing the animals for transport - trips to veterinarian for health certificates and required vaccines, bathing, socializing, and, in some cases, short-term foster care. You can help. It takes a village to help care for our lost and lonely. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed Sunday and Monday. Call 423-442-1015 or check out all available pets and shelter needs list on our website at www. monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org.

uddy is a 9-month-old retriever/ lab mix who weighs 70 pounds. He has been neutered. Buddy is very playful and has a lot of energy, as you would expect from a puppy. He is currently being fostered and has learned so much in just the short time he has been there. He is house trained and has mastered some of the basic commands. Buddy would make a great companion on long walks and can be on or off leash. Do you hate spiders? Buddy is great at catching them! He also loves to play with toys, especially chew toys. Buddy had a rough beginning and is a little hesitant when meeting new people or experiencing new things. A fenced-in yard would be a great place for him to learn more about the world. In his spare time, Buddy likes to watch TV. Maybe the Dog Whisperer?! Buddy is a sweet and loving dog who enjoys human interaction. He would be a great addition to your household.

Suzie, Alpine, and Shirley are the featured cats of the week at the Monroe County Animal Shelter. Suzie is a one-yearold Calico female. She’s a sweet cat with gorgeous golden eyes and gets along with other cats but does not like dogs. She loves

attention, especially tummy rubs on her bunny soft fur, and is good with cat-savvy kids. Alpine is a three-year-old handsome white short-hair male with some orange tint on his tail. He has golden eyes and is pretty shy and reserved right now but relaxes with petting. He needs someone to love so he can learn to trust and snuggle again. Shirley is a gorgeous one-year-old medium hair girl who is a bit on the shy side... until you start paying proper attention to her, then she’ll become your best friend. She has beautiful golden eyes and gets along with other cats. Because she is a medium-long hair, she should be brushed daily to prevent painful matting and to keep her fur beautiful and shiny. She’s looking for someone to love. Will you be that someone? Please remember their true purrrsonality may not show in the shelter environment. They may be uncomfortable or scared, so take time to pet them while they are still in their condo and let them get used to you before you pick him/her up. All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. There is a $40 adoption fee if over 2 years old and $50 under 2. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville behind the Walmart. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Call 423-442-1015 for a visit, or check out our website at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org.

Tennessee Theatre Invites Community to Celebrate “90 Days for 90 Years”

4B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2018

T

he Tennessee Theatre turns 90 years old on October 1, and to commemorate the milestone, the Official State Theatre of Tennessee is celebrating over a period of 90 days. From September 29 through December 31, the public is invited to attend and engage with the theatre through special anniversary events, giveaways, free tours and open houses, and a curated social media campaign that will include historical photos, fun facts, and more. Noted anniversary events include the Tennessee Theatre 90th Anniversary Gala on September 30 featuring bluegrass/ Americana musician Alison Krauss, the most-awarded singer in Grammy history, and a prohibition-era cocktail party on September 29. Tickets for both events are on sale now. “As we recognize 90 years of Tennessee Theatre history, we’re celebrating the memories and beloved experiences of millions of patrons, movie-goers, concert attendees, donors, and friends,” said Becky Hancock, Tennessee Theatre Executive Director. “The theatre experience truly is a community experience. That’s why we’re extending the 90th anniversary celebration over 90 days, sharing unique experiences, free activities, and fun information for everyone.” Anniversary weekend events kicking off the “90 Days for 90 Years” celebration include: » Saturday, September 29: Party Prohibition-style with a nod to the Roaring Twenties, when the Tennessee Theatre first opened. The 90-Year Speakeasy event includes dancing, themed cocktails, and more surprises at the majestic downtown theatre. Tickets are $90 plus service fees. » Sunday, September 30: Beloved bluegrass musician Alison Krauss returns

to the Knoxville stage for the Tennessee Theatre 90th Anniversary Gala. In addition to recognizing the theatre’s past 90 years, the event will raise funds for the non-profit’s ongoing preservation and free community events. VIP tickets, which include prime seating, reception, and silent auction, are $250. Concert tickets are $85 and $65 plus service fees. » Monday, October 1: Mighty Musical Monday, the Tennessee Theatre’s free monthly daytime event featuring Mighty Wurlitzer organ performances, coincides with the theatre’s actual 90th anniversary date. In addition to celebrating the theatre’s opening in 1928, this very special Mighty Musical Monday also will honor Dr. Bill Snyder as he retires as the theatre’s House Organist, a position he has held since 1979. Doors open at 11:30 am, and the event starts at noon. Brown bag lunches and snacks will be available for purchase, or guests may bring their own lunch.

» Monday, October 1: The evening will feature a lineup of on-screen entertainment typical of the Tennessee Theatre’s early years as a movie palace. Patrons will enjoy a vintage cartoon, timely newsreel, comedy short, Mighty Wurlitzer organ performance, and screening of a vintage film from the 1920s. The program begins at 7 pm and admission is free, but patrons are welcome to bring 60 cents as a symbolic purchase of a 1928 opening-day ticket. “Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more announcements, as we have many fun things planned to celebrate this incredible milestone,” said Hancock. “We are fortunate to have a community that has supported us all these years, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Tennessee Theatre during ‘90 Days for 90 Years!’” The Tennessee Theatre officially opened as a movie palace on October 1, 1928, showing “The Fleet’s In” starring Clara

Bow. Nearly 10,000 people attended, and guests also enjoyed a newsreel and musical performances, including the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Throughout the next 90 years, the Tennessee Theatre changed and evolved, struggled and flourished, and after undergoing a nearly $30 million renovation, officially reopened January 14, 2005, as a dazzling entertainment palace with 21st century technical amenities and a fully restored decorative interior. Shortly following the renovation and reopening, Krauss and her talented band, Union Station, performed as part of the theatre’s first subscription series, selling out two shows on the Tennessee Theatre stage. The 90-year history of the Tennessee Theatre is rich with stories of performers, patrons, parties, poignant events, and pop culture. Theatre staff have been gathering firsthand accounts of these memories from the public and key individuals, capturing and preserving the oral history and impact of the Official State Theatre of Tennessee in Knoxville and beyond. Those stories will be shared in person, on social media, and in other ways throughout the anniversary celebration and beyond. More activities, tours, stories, and surprises will be shared throughout the “90 Days for 90 Years” celebration, and a full list of events is available at www. tennesseetheatre.com/90years. “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens Adapted by Edward Morgan and Joseph Hanreddy Music by John Tanner November 29 – December 22 CBT Mainstage There’s a reason we perform this tale every year. A yearly tradition to treasure with family and friends. “King Charles III” by Mike Bartlett February 6–24, 2019 CBT Mainstage Queen Elizabeth II has died. After a lifetime of waiting, Prince Charles is finally King. How will he reign? And what do his children think about his ascension to the throne? Written like a Shakespearean history, this Broadway and London hit explores the potential rivalries of the Royal Family, the unwritten rules governing Britain’s monarchy, and the contemporary stresses on its democracy. “Detroit ‘67” by Dominique Morisseau February 27 – March 17, 2019 Carousel Theatre Summer 1967. When the 12th Street riots erupt after a raid on an unlicensed after-hours bar, the fate of the once booming blue collar town takes a turn for the worse on five young Detroiters. Set to a Motown beat, this Edward M. Kennedy Drama Prize winner explores an explosive and decisive moment in an American city. “The Real Inspector Hound” by Tom Stoppard March 27 – April 14, 2019

Lab Theatre Attending the premiere of a new murder mystery, two feuding theatre critics soon find themselves inside the play-within-a-play and implicated in the lethal activities of an escaped madman. “The Madwoman of Chaillot” by Jean Giraudoux Translated by Laurence Senelick April 24 – May 12 CBT Mainstage A group of corrupt oil men want to drill right under the streets of Paris, but Countess Aurelia and her band of eccentric followers are having none of it! A treasure of French poetic satire since its premiere in 1945, the characters, the absurdities, and the political commentary seem just as relevant today. Starring Carol Mayo Jenkins. August in the Garden

T

his month I am going to get a little philosophical and talk about life before I move to gardening. Bear with me. The one inevitable aspect of life (other than death) is change. That is also true of your yard. Trees fall and trees grow. What was once sunny may now be shady and vice versa. Some plants thrive and others struggle. Neighbors arrive, and areas that were once wooded are cleared. It isn’t only the outside that changes. Sometimes our health or the health of a family member declines, and we are no longer able to do the gardening that we once did. Sometimes the one who did all the work in the yard is no longer there. On the other side of the coin, children may arrive or take up a sport and suddenly your free time is no longer free. I am bringing all this up because I have visited several homes this past month that were dealing with change. At one, life had intervened, and a yard that was once lovely had become unkept and overgrown. At another, a person from a different area of the country was simply trying to figure out what was what. At still another, a mom wanted to shield their pool from prying eyes because her teenage daughter was being ogled! All of this is a roundabout way of telling you to not be afraid to make the changes that you need to make. I want your yard to be a place where you can go to enjoy life, not something that you dread! If you hate maintaining big beds and can’t afford to hire someone else to do it, take them out and sow grass. If you have shrubs that require constant trimming or treating or babying, take them out and replace them. If you need to shield your yard from prying eyes, plant some trees! Don’t be afraid of change,

BY LISA GRUGIN

because it is going to happen. Now that I have that out of the way, let’s talk about some general plant stuff that needs to be done. Yes, I know it is hot with 100% humidity and the mosquitoes are as big as hummingbirds, but you still need to do a few things. » Water. You may be getting plenty of rain at your house, but I have had to drag out the hose a few times at mine. Use sentinel plants like hydrangeas (that droop when they are thirsty) to tell you when things are dry. Guess what I am going to say next: Sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but don’t do diddly for trees and shrubs. Yep, I’ll keep saying that until everyone in the area understands and I stop hearing “but I have a sprinkler” when you come in and want to know why your plants are dead. » We have had some nasty storms, so remember to check your trees for damage. We often forget to look up sometimes until what was once up falls down. » Check for disease on your plants and treat as needed. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance, as well as the less treatable root diseases. If you are exhausted from constant spraying, you may want to try a systemic product. Remember that good hygiene is a primary way of stopping the problem, so remove diseased areas if practical and pick up any diseased leaves that fall to the ground. » Check for bugs, but make sure you have bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is causing two serious problems: The problem bugs are becoming resistant to the chemicals, and good guys like bees are getting wiped out. Don’t add to the problem. » Did you plant vegetables? How did they do? If you didn’t enjoy the success you had

Sometimes the solution is very simple, like plant rotation or installing drip irrigation. » Isn’t it amazing how fast the weeds can take over? Keep pulling and spraying them and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent. » If there are areas of your yard that are struggling with no apparent reason, do a soil test or at least purchase a pH tester. Sometimes your pH is wrong for the plant. I often see azaleas, hollies, and other acid lovers struggle because they are planted near a foundation or driveway that is leaching lime into the soil. The lime raises the pH of the soil, and those plants must have a lower

pH to survive or they will starve to death because they cannot pull the nutrients from the soil. You will need to add Sulphur to drop the pH below 6.5. » The fall migration will start soon. Keep your bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full so that visiting birds can have an Airbnb at your house! That is all for this month. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: The Castor Bean By Amy Dismukes, UT/TSU Extension, Williamson County

T

he castor bean, Ricinus communis, a member of the spurge (Euphorbianceae) family, grown both for its flowers and dramatic foliage, is indigenous to the southeastern Mediterranean, Eastern Africa, and India, but the plant can be grown throughout the United States as an ornamental annual. The name Ricinus is Latin for tick, for which the seed is so named due to its markings and shape. The common name castor oil is thought to come from its use as an alternative to castoreum, a perfume base derived from the dried glands of the beaver (castor in Latin). Another common name is palm of Christ, or Palma Christi, which speaks to the plant’s castor oil derivative and its reputed ability to heal wounds and cure ailments. Other common names include mole killer plant and castor oil plant. It is said that the plants were grown in English gardens, beginning around the 16th century, as well as in Egypt, where the oils were utilized as an alternative to lamp oil. In the United States, castor bean plants were grown to produce castor oil, which was used in making soaps, linoleum, nylon, paints, and electrical insulations. It was also used to make a military grade aircraft lubricant and was a popular medicine in the first half of the 20th century. Because the oil itself does not contain ricin, the poison naturally found in castor beans, it has also found its way into the

cosmetic world as a benefit for both skin and hair. Today, when we think of castor bean, most of us think of moles, those annoying little guys responsible for tunneling around your backyard in search of food… probably because castor oil is the main component in many mole deterrent sprays. The effectiveness of these sprays is still up in the air. Castor bean can vary greatly in both its appearance and growth habits. Over time, breeders have increased this variability by selecting specific cultivars for leaf and flower color, as well as oil production, leading to its new found popularity with gardeners. With its rapid growth rate, some cultivars

can reach the size of a small tree in a very short period of time. The giant castors, of course, can surpass those shorter varieties in both height and width. Dependent on the type of castor you choose to grow, its enormous, glossy palmate leaves can range between anywhere from 6 to 30 inches across, resembling a star, with anywhere from five to 12 deep, coarsely serrated lobes. Each leaf is attached by a slender, long petiole, arranged alternately up the main stalk. In some varieties, the leaves start off a dark, reddish purple, bronze, or green, gradually changing to a darker tone as they mature, whereas other varieties offer green leaves from the start.

The stems and alien-like, spiny seed pods also vary in color and are often prettier than the actual blooms. The male flowers are yellowish-green with creamy white stamens, whereas the female flowers hide within the spiny seed pods, have red stigmas, and are produced in lower numbers than the male. Each fruit is a spiny capsule containing large, bean-like seeds decorated with a brownish mottling pattern. The seed has a small wart-like appendage called a caruncle, which promotes myrmecochory – the dispersal of seed by ants. If you’d like to incorporate castor bean plants into your landscape, sow the seeds in a site with direct sun and deep, rich soil. Alternatively, you may start them early, inside, to get a jump on the growing season, transplanting young plants to a sunny location when the weather is adequate and the possibility of freeze has passed. Make sure to protect the plants from winds that could harm the large, glossy leaves. Castor bean plants love water, so make sure they receive an adequate amount of irrigation should drought be a concern at any time. The biggest drawback of castor bean is its lack of cold hardiness. As the year goes by and the temperatures begin to drop, you’ll notice your castor bean seems to disappear along with the long daylight hours. You can bring your baby back to life by saving its seeds. Its seed is the castor bean, which, despite its name, is not a true bean. Using rubber gloves, carefully cut the seed stalk (previous bloom) out, allow the seed pods to dry in a cool, dark, and dry room, and crack and remove the seeds carefully. You may store the seeds in a paper envelope, labeled, inside your refrigerator or wherever you store “saved seeds.” If you want to take a peek before you jump all in, Ricinus communis var. New Zealand Black and Ricinus communis var. Carmencita Red are both grown at the UT Gardens, Knoxville. Ricinus communis var. gibsonii – my favorite – makes an annual debut in UT Gardens, Jackson. All in all, castor bean is a star – literally! Don’t let the “poisonous” label scare you, as it would take a deliberate act to utilize it as a poison. Unintentional exposure is highly unlikely, except through the ingestion of the beans. So don’t eat the beans! The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Warm or Cool Weather Pests…

D

ayton’s takes care of them all! The pest population revolves around the weather and their need for food, water, and shelter, which is often in your home! Warm weather pests – mosquitoes, ants, bees, ticks, fleas, wasps, yellow jackets – are still out in full force during August, while Fall Invaders start gathering to hibernate inside your home before cooler weather arrives. Fall Invaders include ladybugs, kudzu bugs, box elder bugs, and stink bugs, and it’s best to have your home treated PRIOR to their arrival with a special treatment protocol. Call Dayton’s to take care of a bug problem when it’s small before these pests start multiplying and possibly cause a heavy infestation. However, if you are already infested with a pest, Dayton’s can take care of it – with all results guaranteed! Think about how you keep your car running smoothly with regular maintenance and oil changes. Pest management is similar in that using Dayton’s Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control as a regular pest maintenance service protects your home year-round. New customers can take advantage of $25 off the initial treatment for Quarterly Perimeter Pest Control with an annual agreement and $25 off one Warm Weather Pest or Fall Invader treatment. And yes, mosquitoes are still around, and new customers can receive $25 off their first treatment of Dayton’s Mosquito Control Management Program with an agreement through October 2018. It’s Great to be 10 Years Strong!

10B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2018

By Christina Fitzwilliam Co-Owner Of Surface Doc

I

cannot believe our summer has almost come to an end. All the scheduling that seemed overwhelming at the beginning of summer has come and gone, and I am both relieved as well as a bit remorseful. As I glance through my own home, it’s obvious it is going to need some TLC before I gear up for fall barbeques and weekend get-togethers. Enter the “honey-do list.” Luckily there is one chore my husband, John, doesn’t mind tackling in our home. But it wasn’t always so. Ten years ago, before we began the deep cleaning business, John was a restaurant manager. One of his most frustrating challenges was getting the commercial kitchen and dining areas clean. I think he tried most every cleaning technique, product, and tool in the market, but those restaurant floors never succumbed to his efforts. I had the same issue cleaning my own tile and grout kitchen floor, and there was little he could do to help me. So, in 2008, when John and I flew to Arizona to check out some innovative cleaning equipment, my husband was skeptical. His skepticism gave way to sheer excite-

ment as he saw what these magical tools could do. He still gets giddy from time to time when he encounters a floor that looks beyond help that he can transform into something beautiful. That first week we practiced in our own home, and I was astonished at how different my tile and grout floors looked. My carpet lightened several shades, and my driveway literally glowed in the dark. Many of our friends got free cleanings those first few weeks as well, and they

hop Farragut and Town of Farragut have teamed up with Smoky Mountain Dock Dogs and Ricki’s Pet Depot to once again bring a nationally sanctioned regional canine aquatics competition of DockDogs International. The festivities will take place in the Village Green Shopping Center parking lot, just south of Stein Mart and the new Planet Fitness, on August 17-19. “We had more than 45 dogs of every breed imaginable, totaling 258 entries into each of the various competitions last year,” said Steve Krempasky, Shop Farragut organizer. “These pets represented entries from six different states!” DockDogs was established in 2000; its first event was at the ESPN 2000 Great Outdoor Games competition. This competition will attract dog owners from across the Southeast. Last year there were more than 30 competitors and more than 2500 visitors at the first-time Farragut event. Registrants will be able to gain qualifying points towards attendance at the World Championships, which coincidently will be held once again in Knoxville at the Civic Center October 13-19. If you have never witnessed this, expect the unexpected! The festivities will start on Friday evening with a local dog “Pooch Plunge!” Local dog owners will have the opportunity to have their puppy try a Dock-Dive! K9 Pet Services of East Tennessee has underwritten The Plunge activity, which will allow non-competitors to try the DockDog experience free of charge. Between 4 and 7 pm, members of the Smoky Mountain DockDogs Club will assist area pet lovers with their introduction to the sport. “Last year our club helped 33 local pet owners try a Dock Dive,” said Trent Steele, Smoky Mountain Dockdogs President. “I believe that is a new benchmark for this type of event.” If anyone is interested in entering their dog (all breeds accepted) in the actual competition, they can email dd_ admin@dockdogs.com, call 330-241-4975, or visit www. dockdogs.com/eventscal/dog-daze-at-village-green. Actual competitions will commence on Saturday at 11 am. The final rounds of competition and award presentations will take place Sunday afternoon. Between qualifying rounds, spectators can shop the Village Green shopping center, visit the many merchant booths on-site, mingle with pet food suppliers, plus get food and drinks at the beer garden while visiting many pet related vendor booths and displays. There is NO admission to attend this exciting event. For more information, visit www.dockdogs.com.

were equally thrilled. Here’s what I’ve learned during the last 10 years. Every now and then, even the most well-cared for and well-maintained house needs an occasional deep cleaning – cleaning places that are not in a regular cleaning schedule or places that are hard to clean. Dirt contaminants build up over time and cause beautiful tile and grout to discolor. Dirt becomes trapped within the pores of your floor and cannot be removed without some powerful measures. Surface Doc has some really cool equipment that simply does what we can’t possibly do on our own. With a combination of high heat, high pressure, and a powerful spinning brush, all contained under a pressure hood, your floors will have no choice but to release the soil and contaminants buried deep within them. This process allows for the complete removal of years of build-up within your floor. If it’s time for your floors to look new again, give Surface Doc and John a call.
