Mudroom: Form and Function Work Together

M

udroom. While some hate the label “mudroom,” it’s a good description of how we often use the space. It can be a messy catchall for daily items like shoes, coats, bags, and dog leashes. However, the mudroom has evolved into a highly functional family center. Since it’s in a common entryway that visitors see, homeowners want the mudroom to match the style of the house while functioning as a control center. So besides a place to sit as you put on your shoes, the mudroom can be designed to do so much more.

Include Hooks and Cubbies

Every member of the family needs their own coat hook and cubby space. Kids are more likely to hang their backpack and jackets on a hook, keeping them organized and saving valuable time on school mornings. Cubbies help everyone keep track of everyday items like a purse or cap.

Add Cabinets

A mudroom is part of your home, so dress up the look of the space by adding cabinet doors over the cubbies. Doors make a mudroom look more stylish rather than a catchall zone. And, let’s be honest, a cabinet door hides any cluttered shelves.

Put in a Hamper

With a hamper, clothes that are wet or muddy have a place to go. Otherwise those clothes end up dropped on the floor or left in a kid’s backpack. Nobody wants to discover a smelly, wet t-shirt days later in a backpack!

Create a Communications Station

Since the mudroom sees daily traffic, make it a place for family communications. Include a chalk or corkboard for reminders such as grocery items or baseball practice. Now the refrigerator won’t be covered with notes, invitations, and pictures. Also, include USB

ports to create a place to recharge cell phones, tablets, and other electronic equipment.

Install a Sink

A sink helps to cut down on the dirt. So if you have the space, install one to help keep everyone – and your house – clean.

Use the Garage

If you don’t have the space for a mudroom inside your house, use the garage! Placed just outside the door, a garage mudroom serves the same purpose and keeps a lot of the dirt out of the house. Want to create a mudroom for your house? Tailored Living of Knoxville will work with you to design, select materials that coordinate with the rest of your house, and install the space that best fits your family’s needs. You’ll love your new space and ask yourself, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?” Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

President Ulysses S. Grant Visits American Legion Post 256

6A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views August, 2019

By James Patterson

A

merican Legion Post 256 once again enjoyed another presentation of Ulysses S. Grant as portrayed by E.C. Fields, Jr., Ph.D. During past visits, Dr. Fields has portrayed Grant as the Civil War General, but for this visit, he gave an exceptional briefing of Grant during his presidency. After Ulysses S. Grant had led the Union Armies to victory in the American Civil War, he was elected as the 18th president of the United States in 1869. Dr. Fields laid out the many accomplishments of President Grant’s term in office. He had a strong focus on reconstruction with efforts to heal the nation after the Civil War. He supported pardons for former

Confederate leaders while also attempting to protect the civil rights of freed slaves. In 1870, he pushed the ratification of the 15th Amendment, which gave black men the right to vote. Grant signed legislation establishing the Department of Justice, the Weather Bureau (now known as the National Weather Service), and Yellowstone National Park, America’s first national park. He also tried, with limited success, to improve conditions for Native Americans, being the first to use the term “Native Americans.” Grant’s administration made strides in foreign policy by negotiating the 1871 Treaty of Washington. Dr. E.C. Fields’ ability to portray Ulysses S. Grant makes history both enjoyable and personable, because you feel like Grant himself is standing before you. For additional information about the American Legion, visit www.tellicolakepost256.org.

Skin Care

S

ince my humble beginnings in the salon industry way back in 1995, a lot has changed, and no area of the business has advanced any more than skin care. The demand for better skin care was first brought about by the overwhelming desire to slow the effects of aging skin, and what once was available for only the Hollywood elite or the super rich is now widely available to all of us. The Village Salon proudly partners with Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD to provide our guests with the

most up-to-date skin care available. In an effort to maintain the overall health and appearance of our skin, regular maintenance is required. The types of products used on a daily basis, as well as the occasional treatments, can have a huge impact on how we feel about our appearance. Gina Brown, Aesthetician at Gallaher Plastic Surgery & Spa MD, can easily answer any daily skin care questions and can also provide a wide variety of maintenance

Cades Cove Loop Lope Registration Now Open

O

nline registration for the third annual Cades Cove Loop Lope, the only footrace in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is now open at www. LoopLope.org. Participation is limited to 750 total runners on the 5k or 10-mile courses. This year’s race takes place on Sunday, November 3. The Cades Cove Loop Lope is hosted by and benefits Friends of the Smokies, an official non-profit partner of the National Park Service and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The non-profit organization raises money to support critical projects and programs in the park, including environmental education, historic preservation, wildlife management, and more.

“We are so excited to bring back the Loop Lope for another beautiful fall in the Smokies,” said Kathryn Hemphill, Special Projects Director at Friends of the Smokies. “This is the only race happening inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park, so you do not want to miss out. Nothing else will match the experience!” This year, in addition to the 5k and 10-mile courses along Cades Cove Loop Road, the event features a virtual race option for those who cannot visit the Smokies to participate in person. Virtual runners can sign up online, run at the time and place of their choosing, and still support Great Smoky Mountains National Park. All participants must register in advance, and space is

limited. To protect the natural and cultural resources of Cades Cove, there are a limited number of parking passes available for runners to purchase at the time of registration. Free parking in Townsend and shuttle buses will be available for all registered runners without a parking pass. Registration for both course lengths, the virtual race, interested volunteers, and more information can be found at www.LoopLope.org. Friends of the Smokies is an official non-profit partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and has raised $65 million to support critical park programs in North Carolina and Tennessee. Lynnda is an award-winning artist, a native East Tennessean, and a UT grad. She is a member of the Art Market Gallery and Foothills Craft Guild and has served on boards of both and as president of both. Lynnda has art in several regional collections, including Park West Hospital, UT Hospital, Women’s Contemporary Health, and others. “I love paint, papers, patterns, colors, and layers,” said Lynnda. “I love experimenting with various materials to combine these elements into something fun and interesting. The glimpses of things “hidden” under previous layers or partially visible letters and numbers let the viewer create their own story. We recently moved to a house (and new studio), where we see the most beautiful sunsets every evening. Apparently I never saw sunsets before! I’ve tried to incorporate the delicate colors and nuances of the clouds into my work. It’s a goal in progress, and as with all art, it’s evolving.”

Jan provided us with a detailed market analysis that included appropriate pricing and marketing strategies and how our home would best be presented to potential buyers. MCFA Pets of the Week

Miss Kitty

G

Gene

ene is an Anatolian Shepherd Mix, probably about six years old and about 60 pounds. He was picked up as a stray in Tellico Plains but probably belonged to someone, as he is friendly and does not mind walking on a leash. Gene is not accustomed to being kenneled all day and wants to be around people. This is a big friendly mellow dog who would make a super companion for any family. He is easy going and does well with other dogs that he has met. By the time this is published, he will have gone to the groomer for his “summer cut,” which will make him look like a big puppy. If you are interested in making a difference in an animal’s life, please consider him so he can be your family’s new best friend! Gene is a good example of the type of pet found at shelters across the country. Many of them are housetrained and obey basic commands. They were once someone’s pet. They are looking for a new family to love. Please look at shelter animals or rescue groups before you go to a breeder or pet store. Another alternative is to foster a pet. Please consider offering a foster home to help the pets at Second Chance Pals (SCP), a program of Monroe County Friends of Animals. These foster homes help older and/or sick pets that need more assistance than the usual homeless pet. They often cannot be treated until they have a foster home commitment, where they can safely stay until their recovery needs are met. Veterinary care and expenses are provided for their treatments, and they are closely monitored. It’s Orange Week! Zepplin, Miss Kitty, and Buddy are just waiting for your lap to cheer on the Vols! Did you know that 80% of orange cats are male? And Miss Kitty is our 20 percenter! Miss Kitty is a tiny girl who has raised her kittens and seen them off to their new home. Now it’s her turn! She is very sweet and gentle and loves to be held and petted. Miss Kitty is about 18-24 months old, her bag is packed, and she’s waiting for you to come and get her. Zepplin is about two years old and a great people

here’s a new way to support Smoky Mountain Service Dogs and let fellow motorists know you’re doing so! Smoky Mountain Service Dogs is pre-selling custom license plates to Tennessee residents with registered vehicles. The plate costs $35, but $15.37 of the cost benefits the organization directly. The state requires a minimum of 1,000 pre-orders to start production of the new plate. After all orders are received, it will take four to six months for plates to arrive at local county clerk offices. Pre-order forms and additional information can be found at www. specialtyplate@smokymountainservicedogs. org or by visiting our Facebook page.

cat. Some of the volunteers feel that he would make a GREAT indoor only, therapy-comfort cat for his new owner. Zepplin is a very dominant (NOT aggressive) cat and would prefer to spend time with only humans, as he doesn’t want to share with other cats or dogs. He is a cat that wants interactive time with his human who is home a lot and loves to play. He is not a couch potato cat AND he qualifies as a Pets For Patriots (PFP) cat! He is available for regular adoption also. There is no adoption fee for qualified veterans for your new best friend! Plus a minimum 10% discount at PFP Veterinarians. Buddy is a baby… he’s only about 9-10 months old, and he is called a “cream or buff” color… a diluted orange boy. He is very social, loves to play, and is a normal, active kitten who loves petting and chin scratches. Is your lap all prepped for him? With proper, slow introductions, Buddy should get along with other cats and dogs. Marilyn is NOT special needs, but she sure is SPECIAL! A favorite of the shelter staff and volunteers! She has a very sweet, playful purrsonality, in addition to being a cuddle cat who loves to be held close. She reaches out to pet all visitors! Marilyn is a DSH gray and white. She has

tested positive for FIV as a three month old kitten, but she should be re-tested in three to four months, as results CAN be different with kittens based on vaccinations and other factors! In any event, she can live a very long, happy healthy life in the right home. She must be an indoor ONLY cat, and she needs to go to a home where any other cats are already altered. FIV positive cats can live with negative cats as long as long as all are fixed. Grace is a bit of a quiet cat – at least in the shelter. We have seen many quiet cats turn into lap cats once they are in a home environment again. She is a dainty, white and brown Tabby, approximately one year old. She is hesitant with new people at first but comes around quickly. Grace welcomes attention and likes to be petted and get chin scratches! She would blossom in a quiet home with a somewhat predictable schedule. India is DSH gray/white (and her sister Asia is a DLH gray/white). Both were brought in with their litters of kittens. Both were underweight (common with nursing momcats – it takes a lot of calories to feed those babies) and scraggly but are filling out nicely. (Asia will be available soon, she needs to gain some more weight.) India is very talkative, social, and sweet and enjoys petting and scratches. She has gorgeous markings. She would need to warm up a bit before being picked up and held. Adopt India now and Asia in a few weeks… builtin best friends and sisters! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! We need foster homes for cats and kittens! It takes ALL of us to save and rescue them. Many kittens just need socialization… nothing is more fun than playing and holding kittens! Then they come back to the shelter to be adopted, because YOU made the difference! All animals adopted are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturdays from 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. For more information, call 423-442-1015, and check out all available pets on our website at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org. The MCFA Thrift Store is run by volunteers of The Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA). It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. Like us on Facebook for up-to-date sale information.

Let Restyle Your Fur perform an unforgettable “trans-fur-mation” by having expert furriers: » Convert it into a fabulous vest or 2-in-1 jacket with removable sleeves » Make a cuddly teddy bear, pillow, or throw » Enlarge, downsize, or repair your garment » Create a lightweight reversible fur/silk raincoat » Shear it to update the look Fur is one of the few materials that can be stripped apart and entirely restyled. Beyond alterations, it can be sheared to a short plush, updated to a different style, or, most commonly, added as fur collars, cuffs, or lining for raincoats and everyday coats to add luxury and style. At our Restyle Your Fur event, we will first assess the condition of the fur of your coat and then discuss updating and restyling options for you. Restyle Your Fur is proud to make perfect fur alterations, always with on-time delivery. If you were lucky enough to receive a fur coat from past generations, it may require a restyle to keep up with today’s fashion trends. he Tellico Community Players presents The Glitter Girls at the Tellico Community Playhouse, located at 304 Lakeside Plaza in Loudon. Directed by Len Willis, this (mostly) female southern comedy will run Thursday through Saturday, August 8-10, and Thursday through Sunday, August 15-18. All shows begin at 7:30 pm except for the matinee on Sunday, August 18, which begins at 1:30 pm. The play revolves around an ad hoc meeting of a North Georgia women’s social club called “The Glitter Girls,” convened by its richest member – one Trudy Tromaine – who is supposedly at death’s door and wishing to bequeath some of her millions to one lucky “Sister of the Gleam and Sparkle.” The hitch is that it’s the members themselves who must decide to whom to award the small

fortune (with hopes that the Glitter Girl they select, will see it in her heart to share the money with the rest of her “sisters”). The play can be described as Steel Magnolias meets Survivor, with a big dose of quirky Mark Dunn humor thrown in for good measure. The cast features seven women and three men: Hugh Aukerman as Arpege Lacroix, Freddie Jacob as Trudy Tromaine, Jodi Moody as Patty Wesley, Brad Williams as Charley Seaburn, Judie Douglas as Valerie Fairhope, Pat Ezell as Flossie Price, Mary Gene Brancik as Mayvonne Rausch, Ku Adams as Mamie Ewing, Donna Devenuti as Corinne Culvert, and Mark Brashares as Dowd Foster. Reserved seats cost $21 and are on sale at www. TellicoCommunityPlayhouse.org.

Boz Scaggs Performs at the Tennessee Theater September 5

t’s appropriate that Boz Scaggs’ latest album is Out of the Blues (July 2018), since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career. Born William Royce Scaggs in Canton, Ohio, on June 8, 1944, he grew up in Oklahoma and Texas, where he spent his teenage years immersed in the blues, R&B, and early rock ‘n’ roll. While attending school in Dallas, he played in local combos. After several years as a journeyman musician around Madison, WI, and Austin, TX, Scaggs spent time traveling in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, eventually settling in Stockholm, where he recorded the album Boz. Returning to the U.S. in 1967, Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band in San Francisco, performing on that group’s albums Children of the Future and Sailor before launching his solo career with 1968’s seminal Boz Scaggs LP, recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, for Atlantic Records. Scaggs continued to mine a personalized mix of rock, blues, and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential ‘70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer, and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching number two and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks. It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: “It’s Over,” “Lido Shuffle,” and the Grammywinning “Lowdown.” Subsequently, “We’re All Alone,” from that same album, would become a number one single for Rita Coolidge. Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man and such hit singles as “Breakdown Dead Ahead,” “Jo Jo,” and “Look What You’ve Done to Me.” Despite his ‘70s successes, Scaggs spent much of the 1980s out of the music-biz spotlight, traveling, opening a family business, fathering young children, and founding the San Francisco nightclub Slim’s, He returned to the studio after an eight year hiatus and released Other Roads, Some Change, Dig, the Grammy-nominated Come on Home, the unplugged Fade Into Light, the in-concert retrospective Greatest Hits Live, as well as a stint touring with Donald Fagen’s New York Rock & Soul Review – all while continuing to maintain a loyal audience in the U.S. and overseas, particularly in Japan. A pair of albums of jazz standards, But Beautiful and Speak Low, the latter topping the Billboard Jazz chart, demonstrated Scaggs’

stylistic mastery, as did the Southern-flavored Memphis and the rhythm & bluesy A Fool to Care. “Music has been a constant companion and I’m feeling more free with it than ever,” said Scaggs. “I feel like I’ve found my voice through all these years, and I’ve gotten

he 4th of July Celebration is a long-standing tradition for the residents of Rarity Bay. The Rarity Bay Yacht Club (RBYC) began the tradition in the early 2000s. Joining together in 2016, the Rarity Bay Country Club (RBCC), Rarity Bay Women’s Club (RBWC), and RBYC held the first annual community-wide 4th of July Celebration at RBCC. Together these clubs host Rarity Bay’s largest and best event of the year! Every year, as the community continues to grow, the event becomes more popular, reaching close to 650 friends and family this year. Residents enjoyed a traditional cookout-style buffet, popcorn, snow cones, and Mayfield’s ice cream. Other event highlights included the national anthem presented by Karey Daniel, a patriotic themed parade, live entertainment from the band GRITS, and the RBWC Carnival with more than 20 games/activities for kids of all ages. The celebration concluded with lighting up the sky with a grand firework spectacular. We would like to give a special thanks to Premier Resort Management, the Ayres Family, and Dixie Lee Fireworks for helping make this event a success. There’s no bond stronger than a community coming together to celebrate America’s freedom. The overwhelming feedback from residents of the community assures us that Rarity Bay is the best place to be. “It was our first 4th of July celebration at Rarity Bay since buying our property six years ago. The festivities were above our expectations. Glad to be in our heaven on earth!” – Scott Clark, Rarity Bay resident “Thanks to all involved in making this event such a success enjoyed by us, our family visiting, and all the wonderful residents and their families here at Rarity Bay.” - Marilyn Hudoba, Rarity Bay resident

Gordon Lightfoot

I

magine being an artist whose career is about to span seven decades (yes, seven). Imagine writing songs that are immediately recognizable by every generation who listens to music today. Imagine writing songs that have been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton,

Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com Olivia Newton-John, John Mellencamp, Harry Belafonte, and countless others. The artist who personifies that and so much more is none other than Gordon Lightfoot. My earliest remembrances of the Canadian artist (and national treasure, in the opinion of The Band’s Robbie Robertson) are of hearing “If You Could Read My Mind” on the Phoenix radio stations when I was a radio listening 11 year old. I became an instant fan. That following was further solidified when I watched Elvis Presley cover “Early Morning Rain” on his historic “Aloha from Hawaii” televised concert. When I heard that the Canadian legend was going to be performing at Chattanooga’s Tivoli Theatre, I had to reach out for an interview and was thrilled that it was granted. I reached Gordon at his home in Toronto. After making small talk, I asked him how he felt about still performing and having performed for more than six decades. “Well, I think I better be prepared!” he said. “I think I had better be prepared and stay prepared. I have a group of people working with me, and they’re all prepared. We’re ready to go. We go on tour seven times a year. Each time we do about 10 or 11 shows. So if you add up the year, we’ve done about 80 shows, and we play all across North America!” Word has been circulating about a possible new album of new material by Gordon, so I asked him about it. “The record is from some newly discovered material that I had forgotten I owned. Honestly. At that point, I really didn’t have enough for another album, but when I found this stuff accidentally by

August, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 17A

one day while cleaning my office, it became apparent that I had enough material available. It was interesting, too, because it was done just before I had a serious illness. I was at full strength. I was playing really strong on my guitar. My vocals were really at a peak at that point. It was about the year 2000. The stuff was written over a three year period there. I dug it out, and it was so good that I kept it all. I was able to work on it and do some orchestrating. That stuff sounds great! That’s going to be my 21st album. All original material.” Since Elvis had a song or two of his, I asked Gordon what his thoughts were of the King. “He covered my song Early Morning Rain better than anybody, and I tell ya, a lot of people recorded that song. I like George Hamilton IV doing it best of all. But Elvis? Yes, I almost jumped out of my car when I heard it on my car radio, because that was the first time I knew that he even did the song, when I heard it one day on my car radio when I was driving down the highway. I didn’t even know about it. All of a sudden, there it was, and I said, ‘Oh my goodness! He’s done it!’ I remember buying a guitar when I was 14 when I first started hearing Elvis Presley, and there he was. I almost jumped out of my car, but I was doing about 75 miles per hour at the time. Ha! Ha!” And why does he still do it? “I’m over 80. You’re not supposed to still be doing this when you’re over 80, so they say; still out there playing music. They tell me some people still play until they’re 90. A prime example is Willie Nelson. Tony Bennett. They’re still playing their music. They’re not getting any younger. I really love the work. I feel confident, and I like my material. I stay ready to perform. I stay prepared. You’ve always got to be in a state of readiness to go out seven times a year.” We all hope that Gordon Lightfoot is around and performing for many more years to come. That said, I asked him a question that I’ve asked many of his peers: How do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy is? His answer was short, sweet, and to the point. “My answer is always so simple, it’s so stupid: That I took care of business! Yeah!” My chat with Gordon Lightfoot can be read in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Are Fall Invaders Already In Your Home?

A

s the summer heat continues through August, Fall Invaders – such as ladybugs, kudzu bugs, box elder bugs, and stink bugs – are building up large populations in and around your house. When the weather cools, they will try to get inside your home to hibernate. In the meantime, all the Warm Weather Pests are still out in full force – mosquitoes, ants, bees, ticks, fleas, roaches, and yellow jackets. Bedbug populations peak in the warmer months, so be on the lookout for them especially when you travel or buy any used furniture. Once bedbugs get inside your home, they can reproduce quickly and cause a heavy infestation. The best pest management approach is to have Dayton’s professionals protect your home year-round with quarterly perimeter pest control! It’s convenient, affordable, and effective in controlling bugs so you won’t end up with a bigger problem. Fall Invaders require a special treatment protocol, so it’s best to get your home treated NOW – prior to their arrival – so they won’t spend the fall and winter inside your home. And yes, mosquitoes are still out biting and carrying diseases like the West Nile or Zika virus! Dayton’s can get rid of all your pests, guaranteed! Dayton’s Pest Control

Could You Accidentally Have All of Your Investment Eggs in One Basket?

A

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

retired couple came to my office recently to talk about their investments. In the course of our conversation, the husband wondered aloud how he could have lost a third of his portfolio in 2008 when he had invested in mutual funds, rather than individual stocks. Didn’t he have his money well diversified? On the surface, it seemed so. But after we talked further, I found that he had inadvertently invested in mutual funds holding one kind of investment – large cap stocks – and that particular asset class had suffered a 37% decline that year. He had mistakenly put all his investment eggs in one basket. True investment diversification spreads your money across many asset classes – large cap stocks, small cap stocks, mid cap, growth, value, U.S., international, real estate, less-risky bonds and fixed income, cash… well, you get the idea. Each asset class performs differently under changing market conditions. The trick is to find the right mix that suits you and your unique risk profile. Understanding how well you can financially and emotionally withstand a market downturn is critical to building a diversified investment portfolio that suits you. Why is this so very important? When you are invested in your right mix, you’ll stay in the market through its inevitable ups and downs. If you inadvertently take too much risk, you’ll flee to safety as many investors

tors:

did in 2008. And if you get out, when do you get back in? For those too terrified to get back in the market, they missed the significant upswing in 2009 and beyond. The ability to stay invested in the market over time is critical. According to a Fidelity study, if you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 index in 1980, it would have grown to $659,591 by 2018. If you missed just five of the best days in that time period, you would only have $427,041. Those five days cost more than $230,000! The statistics don’t lie – jumping in and out of the market does not work. Diversification and disciplined rebalancing is THE key to building wealth over time. It’s simple but not easy.

Six Fun Fashion Tips for Summer

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2019

By Carrie McConkey, carriemfashionconsulting.com

S

ummer isn’t only about beach vacations and lying by the pool – it’s also the perfect season to add some zing to our everyday wardrobes. Certain items offer both fashion and function during the warm summer months and are easy and affordable to acquire if they aren’t already in our closets. 1. Make white your new neutral. It’s tempting to

fall into wearing black year-round. Resist the urge and introduce a crisp white blazer, pant, or other core piece of clothing into your summer wardrobe. Purchase washable pieces if you are prone to spills or stains! 2. Choose a cheerful purse. Airy and fun, woven straw bags bring a bit of the beach to your daily routine. Classy rattan purses provide a dressier look and are guaranteed to bring compliments. Seeking something more traditional? Opt for a colored leather in your choice of pastel or bright.

Love Your Closet Every space in your home should be loved, especially closets. Let us turn your dreams into beautiful designs we build for your enjoyment.

3. Seek out two pairs of shades. Two sets of sunglasses are all you need to look the part no matter where your summer adventures may lead. Choose a sporty pair for weekend and outdoor activities and an elegant set for when you want to feel as sophisticated as Jackie-O. 4. Invest in special coverage bras. While it’s always good to take stock of your unmentionables (experts recommend replacing bras every six months to a year depending upon how often they are worn), body-baring summer fashions often require strapless and racer back styles. Buy them before you need them! 5. Wear a pair of wedges. Wedge heels mimic the benefits of stilettos by elongating the leg, shaping the calf, and encouraging a sexy stride. But unlike their chic cousins, easygoing wedges provide the benefit of a sturdier, pain-free platform on which to strut one’s stuff. 6. Turn heads in a dress. Summer is the ideal time to break out every woman’s secret weapon: The dress. What can be easier in the morning than not worrying about mixing and matching pieces? Put on a feminine frock and off you go, projecting an effortless elegance the entire day. The lengthy days of summer are a time to recharge and renew before the busy school and holiday months begin. Make the most of the season by integrating these timeless elements into your daily fashion routine and enjoy the sunshine! Closets by McKenry

Let Us Help You Make Your Neighbors Jealous!

M

By Christina Fitzwilliam

any years ago my family got a great deal on a large home just outside of town. I loved the space, the possibilities, and the kitchen. The inside was everything I wanted in a home. Our home was dubbed the “office building.” It was undoubtedly because of its overwhelming brick facade and its lack of windows or landscaping. At that time, my husband, John, was working six days a week, and I was caring for our small children. Sad to say, in the five years we lived there, it STILL lacked curb appeal. Sorry neighbors! Fast forward 15 years… we now run a business that specializes in making homes look their best inside AND out. Most of you probably know as us the “tile cleaning company,” and that’s partially true. For 12 years, tile and grout cleaning has been our most known specialty. We clean most any surface inside the home, including tile and grout, carpeting, granite, and marble. It’s a lesser known fact that we are exceptional at cleaning outdoor surfaces as well. We offer soft-washing for your home’s roof, as well as

its exterior, whether brick, siding, or stucco. Soft-washing is effective and safe for your home because of the specialized detergents we use. Many homes are damaged by traditional pressure washing, which is a completely different process than we use. Because we only use a soft pressure spray, your foliage, shutters, and joints will remain intact and protected. We also remove black streaking from roofs before permanent damage occurs. Often sidewalks and pool patios develop mold or algae problems. Without proper cleaning and removal of the imbedded debris, these walkable areas will become slip hazards and suffer permanent damage. Driveways, especially white ones, can become unsightly as they lose their luster and accumulate oil stains. Traditional pressure washing will pit the concrete and cause costly repairs. We have visited many homes where well-meaning homeowners have sadly destroyed their sidewalks and driveways trying to pressure wash them. If you have wood and decking, you may also be dealing with slick areas due to algae build up. Perhaps it has become dry and brittle and needs to be properly cleaned

Sell Your Unused Household Items the Premiere Consignment Way

August, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 3B

Safely – Efficiently – Conveniently

By Aaron Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

F

or years, individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not anymore. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell any number of household items by themselves. In fact, things have gotten so bad that those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the effort? Do you really want to invite strangers

into your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying noshows? We launched Premiere Consignment seven years ago with the goal of helping our neighbors sell their gently used, name brand furniture, art pieces, home décor items, and Oriental rugs without all of the hassle associated with attempting to sell their unused household items themselves. We offer our consigners a complete turnkey environment, which greatly enhances their potential to sell their items at the highest possible prices. And our convenient retail showroom location and hours, in addition to our print and online advertising, ensures that your items will be seen by even more qualified buyers.

Also, Premiere Consignment handles the entire transaction from beginning to end. No sitting at home waiting for strangers to arrive or wondering if their check is good. We also offer you the opportunity to market many of your items online using our very own and very successful eBay store. So forget the ad in the local paper or on Craigslist, put away the yard sale signs, and discover the safe, easy, and most convenient way to sell your gently used furniture, décor, art, and Oriental rugs – the no-hassle, Premiere Consignment way. Ke e n e r H o m e s, I n c. “Trust is the foundation your home is built on.”

“W

e bought our lake lot in 2004 and talked with several builders before deciding to go with Keener Homes. We made a point to meet with Kit regularly when we were about 3 years out and he provided lots of good suggestions regarding the style of home that would work with the slope of the land. When it came time to break ground, we were prepared to encounter rock (our lot is in Tellico Village in Mialaquo Point), and sure enough - we did! This is when we were so glad that we had an experienced builder like Kit on our team.

Kit and his excavating crew came up with a solution to move the house closer to the lake so we could still have a walkout basement. He also worked with an engineer to make sure that the fourth corner of the home was on concrete since the other 3 corners were on rock. He also worked with us to develop a plan for some ‘creative erosion control’ so that we did not need to remove all the large rocks that resulted from the excavation - instead, they were repurposed to help with our landscaping and erosion control. In addition to building a quality home, we got so much more in terms of Kit’s creative problem solving, which saved us lots of money in the long run all things considered given the challenges we encountered with our lot.” — Ed and Barb Park

Create Zones for an Organized Pantry

I

f you’re like most people, your pantry could use a little more organization. An organized pantry helps create extra, usable space and allows you and your family to locate and retrieve items more easily. It will also help you keep track of the freshness of your food and manage your overall on-hand inventory. A great first step to more organization is to create pantry “zones,” which simply means that you are grouping like items together and assigning them to a specific area within the overall pantry. It will save you time and effort and increase the joy you get from your kitchen. Here are some suggestions for zoning success. Zone 1: Non-essentials Store lesser-eaten foods in remote areas

New Home Construction & Remodeling

like top shelves or back corners. Save the accessible areas for everything else. Zone 2: Dry ingredients Place dry ingredients like beans, rice, pasta, flour, and oats in clear, air-tight containers. This will keep them fresh and let you see how much you have left of an ingredient. Zone 3: Canned goods For safety, accessibility, and visibility, store canned goods within arm’s reach. Zone 4: Quick meals

Place quick breakfast, lunch, and dinner items at eye level. These are “meal helpers,” and it’ll help you if they’re easy to see and easy to reach. Add an area for snacks where kids and grandkids will be able to reach. Zone 5: Liquids Oils, vinegars, and any non-refrigerated sauces or condiments should be placed as low as possible on a spill-proof mat.

Visit us at the

Knoxville Home & Garden Show 2019 August 24 & 25 Knoxville Expo Center

Zone 6: Herbs and spices As long as your pantry remains cool and dry, spices can go just about anywhere. Just be certain to place them in an area where they’re easy to reach. A spice rack placed on the back of the pantry door is a popular option. Zone 7: Special foods Does someone in your home have allergies? Is someone in need of gluten- and wheat-free meals? Consider designating an area in the pantry specifically for those special needs. ShelfGenie®

The Ripple Effect of Delivering Hope

M

any people in our community already know that Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering hope, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness through bouquets of repurposed flowers. But what they – and you – may not realize is that the impact of our mission goes far beyond our direct recipients in hospitals, assisted living homes, hospice, and other community health organizations. Every arrangement delivered also impacts family members, friends, healthcare providers, and volunteers at both RAF and the facilities we serve. Families and friends can see the positive effect that a floral delivery has on their loved ones. “My husband was at UT Medical Center receiving his chemotherapy, and he received one of your beautiful arrangements. We want to thank you so much!” – Beth, family member Recipients’ healthcare providers and caregivers also get an emotional boost knowing that their patients will be having better days because of the flowers and moments of kindness and connection extended to them. “We can’t begin to thank you enough. They look so beautiful in all of our residents’ rooms.” – Beth, healthcare provider Further, our volunteers often cite the joy that they get in brightening the days of their neighbors as their main reason for working with us. They know that their efforts don’t just provide one better day to a recipient, but many better days as the flowers will be a recurring reminder that someone cared for them and is thinking of them. “He said he rarely got visitors, let alone flowers, and he really appreciated it. Amazing what a bouquet of flowers can do for a person!” – Becky, RAF volunteer This is what Random Acts of Flowers calls “the ripple effect of delivering hope.” The number of lives impacted by a single delivery goes far beyond the recipient. Our deliveries affect family member, friends, caregivers, volunteers, and – hopefully – you, too! If you want to make an impact with Random Acts of Flowers, call us at 865-633-9082, email us at info@RAFKnoxville. org, or visit RAFKnoxville.org and fill out the individual volunteer form.

New Feature Exhibition, “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew, Open at the Museum of East Tennessee History

M

ountain Dew. Today it’s the soft drink of gamers and programmers. It “fuels” skateboarders, snowboarders, and racecar drivers. And, for some, it’s the perfect pairing for Doritos or Taco Bell fare. High in sugar and caffeine, Mountain Dew ranks as the third most popular “liquid refreshment brand,” behind only Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. How did Mountain Dew become so popular at a time when many Americans are looking for healthier beverage options? In a new feature exhibition “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew at the Museum of East Tennessee History, you can explore the drink’s storied history, which began here in the hills of Appalachia. Mountain Dew was invented in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1946 when Barney and Ally Hartman, of the Hartman Beverage Corporation, first debuted their new soft drink at a Gatlinburg convention. The drink’s trademark became official in 1953. Originally, Mountain Dew’s flavor was lemon-lime similar to 7-Up or Sprite, and it was created by the Hartman brothers primarily as a mixer for hard liquor. In fact, the name Mountain Dew came about because the brothers joked that when mixed with liquor, the drink resembled a fine Tennessee moonshine. To continue the hillbilly aura, the old Mountain Dew bottles depicted a Tennessee moonshiner shooting at a revenuer as he exits an outhouse. Although Mountain Dew was born in Knoxville, it grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sales of the lemon-lime flavored Mountain Dew were modest around Knoxville, so the Hartmans decided to expand their reach by issuing their first franchise to Charlie Gordon of TriCity Beverage in Johnson City in 1954. Charlie Gordon used unique and aggressive advertising techniques to promote Mountain Dew and to dramatically increase the drinks hillbilly desirability. However, it was not until 1960 when Tri-City’s manager, Bill Bridgforth, changed the flavor to the citrus-lemonade flavor we know today, that the drink began to soar. As Bridgforth put it, “it took off like a cat hit on the tail with a hammer.” About “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A Hillbilly History of Mountain Dew The Museum of East Tennessee History will feature “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew, on view now through January 20, 2020. The exhibition highlights the drink’s history, from the origins of the term “mountain dew” and the development of the marketable hillbilly image that influenced media and culture to becoming the third most popular soft drink brand. The exhibition includes more than 200 artifacts highlighting the drinks history, moonshining, and the hillbilly image. The exhibition begins with video footage of early moonshine busts and a visit to a moonshine still in Cocke County in 1938. A variety of liquor jugs, dating from as early as the 1890s, are on display with other moonshine paraphernalia. There is an assortment of artifact reflecting the early color writers and their effects on the hillbilly image, as well as artifacts from Knoxville’s 1910 Appalachian Exposition. One case contains a variety of “hillbilly” memorabilia, including Beverly Hillbillies dolls, comic books, Lil’ Abner items, and a pair of Hee Haw overalls. The exhibition features a 1900 carbonation machine from the Roddy Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Knox-

ville and a sizeable display of rare and highly collectable bottles, including a few dating to Knoxville in 1927, a progression of Mountain Dew bottles over the years, and a variety of other vintage soft drinks from around the region. Of special interest are the “Barney and Ally” bottles, which were the first Mountain Dew bottles ever produced. In 1951 and 1952, the Hartman Beverage Company produced 7 oz. green and clear bottles. The applied color labels bare the name of the creators of Mountain Dew. In the early 1950s, green bottles were reserved for “colorless” flavors, while clear bottles were used for drinks where the color would reflect the actual flavor. Mountain Dew was originally bottled as a set of flavored drinks and not as a specific flavor like today. Also displayed are a variety of items relating to the Hartmann family. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is made possible through a partnership with PepsiCo Knoxville. The exhibit is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through January 20, 2020. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am

Styles include traditional cabinet doors or sliding doors for enclosed cabinets in narrow spaces. Cabinets can be integrated with countertops, drawers, and wall-hanging storage systems to maximize your storage space. Oneinch-thick adjustable shelves inside the cabinets hold large plastic bins and other large items. Other cabinet and storage options include: » Adding locks to doors or drawers provides additional safety precautions to keep tools or toxic products like paint thinner, radiator coolant, and fertilizer out of reach of children. » Slatwall with its various hooks and baskets is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels, and hoses. August in the Garden

elcome to the dog days. Nothing like 95 degrees and 100% humidity to clear out those pores! I keep telling our employees that they are lucky to work under these conditions because some of you pay to go to a sauna. They get that experience free! They aren’t excited about it, and I am sure you aren’t either. It is hard to make yourself go outside and water or weed or deadhead when the air is swampy and the mosquitoes sound like little helicopters. Unfortunately, your plants need your help. The rain has been erratic, fungus is everywhere, and the insects may be preparing to take over the world. If you don’t help your plants get through this stage, be prepared to replace them this fall. Here are the things you need to do: » Water. You may be getting plenty of rain at your house, but I have had to drag out the hose a few times at mine. Use sentinel plants like hydrangeas (that droop when they are thirsty) to tell you when things are dry. For the 999th time, sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but are NOT adequate for trees and shrubs. Yep, I’ll keep saying that until everyone in the area understands and I stop hearing “but I have a sprinkler” when you come in and want to know why your plants are dead. » Check for disease on your plants and treat as needed. Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance in just about everyone’s yard. I am also seeing an unfortunate amount of the less treatable root diseases. Remember that good hygiene is a primary way of stopping the problem, so pick up any diseased leaves that fall to the ground. You may also need to remove infected branches. Pruning to improve air circulation will help with airborne diseases, and spraying with a fungicide such as neem oil or copper will kill fungal spores. Root diseases are much harder to treat, and it usually involves removing mulch and applying a systemic product like Infuse. Call us, stop by, email us, or contact us on Facebook if you have questions. » Check for bugs, but make sure you have bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is causing two serious problems: The problem bugs are becoming resistant to the chemicals, and good guys like bees are getting wiped out. Don’t add to the problem. » Keep an eye on hydrangea macrophylla (Mophead) and Quercifolia (Oakleaf) and notice when they stop

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Chastetree

ncient chastetrees, also called Vitex agnus-castus, can be found at old homes across the South, a testimonial to its durability. A couple of decades ago old homesteads were about the only place you might run across them, as they were considered passé and were no longer carried in garden centers. Fortunately, chastetrees have gone through a revival in popularity, and many forms are currently available in the trade. A variety of growth habits, from small trees to rounded shrubs, will suit many landscapes. Terminal bloom panicles are usually in shades of blue, purple or lilac, but white- and

pink-blooming forms can also be found. Although its other attributes are plenty, the bloom time for this plant has been extended later in the year in some of the newer cultivars, making chastetree an even more garden-worthy plant. It is also extremely drought tolerant once established and has no pests or disease issues. Another endearing quality of this plant is the back story. Chastetree earned its name because it was said to be an herb given to monks to suppress their sex drive and thus help to keep them chaste. It was also strewn into the beds of women whose husbands were away in war to help cool their lust.

The plant’s Latin name acknowledges the story, with ‘agnus’ being derived from the Greek word ‘hagnos’, meaning pure or virginal, and the Latin word ‘castus’, meaning chaste and moral. If you peruse herbal products sold in drugstores that are intended to help women with a variety of hormone-based disorders, you will find chastetree listed as an ingredient, and in a small number of reputable double-blind studies, it has been shown to have some efficacy. This does not confirm the plant’s storied reputation for suppressing the libido, but it does hint that there is some effect on human hormone levels. Plant this deciduous shrub in full sun and well-drained soil. Larger cultivars can be limbed up to form small trees, and dwarf cultivars make rounded shrubs that range from three feet to several feet tall. When needed, chastetree size can be controlled by pruning back as it will bloom on new growth. This is an asset that allows it to be used as a cutback shrub in regions of Tennessee where it is marginally hardy. Even in warmer parts of Tennessee, there may be dieback during years of severe winter, but re-growth from roots can be expected from well-established plants. Some common cultivars include: » Blue Puffball™ (First Editions®), deep blue blooms, 3 to 4 feet tall and wide » Delta Blues™ (First Editions®), purple blooms, 10 feet tall » Blue Diddley® (Proven Winners®), purple blooms, 7 feet tall » ‘Shoal Creek’, purple bloom, 15 feet tall with 12-inch inflorescences Gardeners in colder parts of Tennessee may wish to try a different species of chastetree, Vitex negundo, which is hardier by several degrees. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

This year, due to a scheduling conflict at the

Smoky Mountain Retreat Tellico Plains

museum, we were unable to schedule “Fat Friday Mardi Gras,” but that’s not stopping us from bringing Roux du Bayou back to play for us. Led by Paul Gregoire from Dulac, Louisiana, Roux du Bayou plays authentic cajun, zydeco, swamp pop, mardi gras music, and more. The band has been together for 17 years, and in 2010, they won the prestigious 1st Runner-Up award in the category Prix de Hors Nous for best cajun band outside of Louisiana from the Cajun French Music Association. It’s a few months past Mardi Gras, so we’ll call it “Pardi Gras,” and everyone is encouraged to wear purple, gold, and/or green to add to the “Big Easy” merriment as we “laissez les bontemps roulez” on Labor Day weekend! Your trip includes a boat tour of Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, which offers a visit into the timeless world of this natural wonder. Stroll through the valley as guides share stories of the mysterious blue hole, Civil War soldier, and the cavern’s night club. Enjoy one-of-a-kind adventure floating on Kentucky’s only underground boat tour. We will also visit The Congregation of the Fathers of Mercy, founded in 1808, originally under the title of the “Missionaries of France.” The community was founded for the purpose of re-evangelizing the French people after the Catholic Faith had been subjected to years of attacks and persecution during the French Revolution. It is now an exclusively American community. The main structure of the church is representative of the Vatican in Rome. Before we return to Townsend, you will enjoy the finest old-fashioned, southern-style food, served in an elegant country setting that has been a place for families to come together for generations at Federal Grove Bed & Breakfast in Auburn, Kentucky. The cost is $399 per person (based on double occupancy) and includes all transportation, taxes, gratuities, and service fees. Single occupancy is available at $599 per person. Check-in begins at 6:30 am on September 19, and tours depart at 7 am from the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend. Reservations and payment are required on or before August 16. No refunds after August 16. For reservations, please call Don Alexander at 865-448-8838. Reserve early – overnight tours are limited to 24 guests. New Exhibitions Opening at the Emporium Center on August 2

T

he Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present five new exhibitions at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 2-30. A reception will take place on Friday, August 2, from 5 to 9 pm as part of First Friday activities downtown to which the public is invited to meet the artists and view the artwork. Most of the works are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. The opening reception features flamenco dancing by local group Tinadre at 7 pm.

This new exhibition features abstract paintings with acrylic, charcoal, and graphite. Michelle Barillaro is a native of South Florida and moved to Knoxville more than 20 years ago, graduating from the University of Tennessee, School of Architecture. She remained in the Knoxville area because of the friendly folks, natural beauty, and pleasant climate. However, many of her paintings seem to reflect the colors, movement, and serenity of the Florida coast. She paints with acrylic and oil and cold wax and often incorporates a dash of charcoal, graphite, and pastels. She uses palette knives, bowl scrapers, credit cards, her fingers, and an occasional hake style brush to create her work. As a result, her paintings are abstract in nature with a multi-textural, often ethereal feel.

Terina Gillette Terina Gillette: Discovery: An Exploration of the Nuances of Life in the Main Gallery Discovery: An Exploration of the Nuances of Life is a celebration in acrylic, pastel, and mixed media of all the small things that work together to bring joy, happiness, peace, or puzzlement. Sometimes hearing a bird singing or seeing a fish swimming makes us take notice of the simple beauties that create our world. Each of us have small nuances that greet us daily, and when we stop to discover them, we embrace who we are, where we have been, and where we are going. Many of the pieces in this exhibition represent special moments in the artist’s life, and perhaps these are things that you also celebrate. Terina Gillette is a Tennessee native. She works in a wide variety of mediums and is diverse in her expression and abilities. She creates colorful, texturized abstracts, as well as detailed local landmarks. She is also a face and body painter and spends each weekend painting theatrical face paints on living canvas. She believes that art is the full expression of life. You can find various installations of her painted window glass art, as well as her chalk murals, around East Tennessee. Gillette holds a double cognate in counseling and crisis, grief, and trauma, as well as business, and is currently completing her master’s in psychology. Her educational pursuits heavily influence her pieces, and her view of art is immersed in expression

Statement: Delusionary can be defined as one having the ability to see and believe alternate versions and personalities of others formed in an ever-evolving environment of the mind, which may or may not be based upon real interactions. Born of frustration and confusion, delusionary is an investigation. An intro, a sore yet needful beginning to what will hopefully yield a promising conclusion. A collection of introspective works presented through mixed media panels. Created by working through the subjective rather than the objective. Unlike my last project in which I utilized a realism style, here I work with less planning and in most all cases find myself coming to dead ends that I am forced to work past rather than simply starting over. The process mimics that of my thoughts in a romantic relationship. In viewing these panels, you see firsthand my struggles, and to this point failure, to orchestrate a working version of romantic love. Michelle Barillaro: Travel in the Display Case

Khoa Dinh League of Scruffy Photographers: Observing Knoxville in the Atrium The League of Scruffy Photographers was formed initially as a social group for local photographers. It became readily apparent that there was a tremendous amount of talent and experience contained in that initial group of seasoned individuals. As the group grew with younger, eager, and undiscovered artists, the potential for a group that could educate and put forth a number of projects coalesced. Currently the group includes educators and long-time volunteers, so workshops and collaborations with other entities are in the future. Taking a page from Roger May’s “Looking at Appalachia” and a photo project proposed for TVA in the 1980s, “Observing Knoxville” came about. The League intends over the next year to document all aspects of Knoxville. The good and the bad. A candid, no holds barred look at our fair “Scruffy” city. Beginning with its neighborhoods and moving on to its people and what they do for work and leisure to lifestyles, education, transportation, music, food, and drink to government. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 pm.
