5 Tips to Relax and Recharge on a Boat This Summer

L

Article courtesy of BPT

ooking to get away this summer while social distancing? With annual traditions such as camps and sporting events canceled, the best way to seek relief and recharge with your loved ones may be to “get on board” for a summer on the water. Recent data suggests that interest in fishing and boating has grown amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent Harris poll, one in five Americans said they’re more likely to try these activities than they were prior to the pandemic. And, among parents, the statistic is one in four. Numerous marine dealers across the country are reporting strong spring sales with consumers eager to get on the water, and Discover Boating, the nation’s consumer boating resource, is seeing record growth in consumer web traffic and boat searches, signifying a high demand for close-to-home recreation. With boating restrictions lifting nationwide and

the COVID-19 response dictating where and how far people can travel, boating and fishing are ideal activities to de-stress and unwind while naturally allowing you to abide by social distancing guidelines. “The outdoors is a welcome remedy to stress and anxiety,” said Dr. Sue Varma, a nationally recognized psychiatrist. “Being in nature supports each of the four ‘M’s of mental health: Mindfulness, mastery, meaningful engagement, and movement. In particular, being on the water encourages mindfulness by helping you get away from distractions, it supports mastery by teaching you a new skill, it provides meaningful engagement through quality time with others you may be quarantining with, and it promotes physical movement by getting you outside without requiring a strenuous workout. From a psychiatrist’s perspective, it’s a smart way to follow social distancing guidelines while prioritizing your health and wellness.” There are several easy ways to go boating or fishing, whether you’re ready to buy a boat, test the waters aboard different vessels, or seek solace fishing on water or ashore. Here are tips from Discover Boating to help you find your way to the water this summer.

1. Purchase your dream boat.

Chart your own course to boat ownership by visiting www.DiscoverBoating.com, where you’ll find a boat finder and loan

calculator tool to help determine your budget and identify the different types of boats that fit your lifestyle and interests. The site can connect you with manufacturers whose boats best fit your needs and wants, plus learn about new boat shopping processes during COVID-19.

2. Join a boat club.

Find a boat club near you to access a variety of boats. You’ll pay a monthly fee and be able book your time on the water online. Most boat clubs take care of docking, cleaning, maintenance, and boat training courses, which all follow new CDC and social distancing guidelines.

3. Rent a boat.

Rental options are available on most waterways and provide hourly, daily, or weekly access to a variety of boat types. Rental outfitters give tutorials on operating a boat, provide safety instruction, and offer suggestions on destinations.

4. Share a boat.

Another rental option is peer-to-peer boat rentals. You can search by location or type of boat. Peer-to-peer rental services have tens of thousands of different boats available across the nation. You simply connect with the owner, find out what sort of gear is aboard the boat and included in the rental and other details, and then

hit the water. Most arrangements for boat sharing are made on an app or via computer, minimizing personal contact and eliminating the need to enter an office. You can also inquire with the owners about their boat cleaning and sharing procedures to ensure a healthy transaction.

5. Go fish.

There are thousands of bodies of water where you can cast a line. TakeMeFishing. org is an all-in-one resource to help anyone get started fishing in minutes. Features on the site include how-to guides, an interactive map of places to fish near you, and water access updates to help you fish safely while social distancing. You can even purchase your fishing license on the site. Whether you’re ready to purchase a boat or simply test the waters this summer, all marine businesses have new standard operating procedures following CDC guidelines to ensure the well-being of boaters and their staff. This includes personal protective equipment, socially distant classroom and on-water training, and enhanced sanitation protocol of boats. Visit www.DiscoverBoating.com for a host of resources and tips for getting on the water, boat shopping, safe practices amid the pandemic, public access maps, and more. Planning to “get on board” this summer? Use the social media hashtag #TheWaterIsOpen to share your boating and fishing moments.

If You’re Retired, You Need to Know about Sequencing Risk

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

T

his month I might get a little more technical with you, but it’s an important topic. I want to dive a little deeper into an investment risk that retirees face once they start withdrawing from their portfolios to either supplement income or satisfy IRA Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs). It’s called Sequence of Returns risk. Simply put, this is the risk that if your portfolio experiences losses early in your retirement years, your money may not last as long as an average rate of return might predict. Let’s unpack that together. We all talk about investments in terms of average rate of return, right? A portfolio might have an average annual return of 6% during the last 10 years, for example. But that average 10-year return was earned in a “sequence,” or an order of returns

during those 10 years. Up 10%, down 3%, up 5%, etc., so that on average, over 10 years, it earned 6%. What if you have a negative sequence early in your retirement years? Let’s say your portfolio experiences a 15% loss in year one, along with you also selling and withdrawing 5% of your account to supplement your income. Now your portfolio is reduced by 20% and the remaining balance has to earn 25% just to get back to even. If this happens for a couple of years, it becomes very difficult for your portfolio to recover and sustain your withdrawals through a long retirement. That’s why retirement distribution planning is specialized and imperative. Your investment strategy should be segmented into time blocks, with investments that will be sold in the near term more conservatively invested than investments for the longer term that can have more growth orientation. Even if you’re one of the lucky ones who doesn’t need

to sell assets to live on, the IRS still forces you to deal with sequencing risk when your Required Distributions start at age 72 and you have to make annual IRA withdrawals. Your IRA should be segmented into conservative and growth components to minimize this risk. You can learn more about this topic at our website, www.marshpros.com/losing-money-in-the-market. It’s too important to ignore. Our Contact Us page has multiple ways for us to connect if you’d like more information. Let us help you create a confident, independent retirement. August Highlights

From the Publisher

oing into the last full month of the summer season, I am reminded of how different this year has been compared to previous years. Looking back to just last year, families had a final chance to take that vacation before school started, and many had vacation plans that they were looking forward to before the fall season and the holidays were in full swing. But this year, we all are dealing with a new normal. Our focus is more on staycations, working from home, schooling from home, and updating our home. Home has become our priority. If you have been looking at how you can enhance your home during this time, this edition of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views has some inspiration for you. For example, how about installing a water treatment system by Aqua Clear or updating your interior rooms with some new furniture from Amish Elegance or new appliances from Plaza Electronics? You might be in the market to buy a home, and our featured real estate companies and home builders can help you with those plans. Outdoor activities are also a focus as we all stay at home. Boating is a favorite activity with all our lakes, and we have advertisers that cater to your boat and boat dock. Also, we have featured Trillium Family Properties, who can provide you with the perfect mountain getaway cabin where you can enjoy the Smoky Mountains and the breathtaking views. This is a great time to complete all your home improvement projects and enjoy the outdoors either in your own backyard, on the lake, or in the mountains. Stay safe, keep others safe, and enjoy the rest of the summer season.

Dollywood’s Splash Country Offers Best-Value Deals in Celebration of Milestone Year

D

ollywood’s Splash Country celebrates its 20th year of making cool memories for guests with new ticket offers, live entertainment, and the friendliest atmosphere in the region. In appreciation for two decades of being the Smokies’ most-trusted water park, Dollywood’s Splash Country extends some of the best offers in park history, including an online ticket for $29.95 plus tax for Sunday through Thursday visits. Another great offer, for the first time ever, all full-price tickets purchased include lunch with admission. “No matter what 2020 looks like, we are delighted to be open to celebrate our 20th season,” said Janet Dawson, General Manager of Dollywood’s Splash Country. “We wanted to say thank you to our community through some of the best-value ticket deals we can offer. And while

we know budget is a big part of vacation planning, the reason our water park has been so successful is because of the emotional connections our hosts make with our guests year after year. You’re not going to find better people who love their jobs and love their guests like our folks. That’s consistently what we hear, and we’re very proud to be known for our heart.” Throughout the 20 years of Dollywood’s Splash Country, water park guests have been treated to an immersive experience embodied through the Dollywood brand. The secret behind Splash Country’s staying power is the culture. Hosts pride themselves on

offering the friendliest, most-trusted water attraction in the Smokies. Beyond fun host and guest interaction, Dollywood’s water park offers a family environment full of theming, live entertainment at the wave pool, and natural shade, thanks to mature trees sprinkled throughout the property, which is built into a mountain hollow. Dollywood’s Splash Country is open daily through August 9. Then water park guests may visit August 11, 13, 15-16, 22-23, 29-30, and September 5-7. While masks are required for entry and when guests are not able to social distance from other parties, they are not required on attractions. Due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting capacity, water park guests must make a reservation by visiting www.Dollywood.com/Reservations. For more information, visit www.Dollywood.com.

ew individuals are certain of their path in life at the age of 15, much less already achieved a masterful grasp on it. However, Atlanta singer-songwriter Leah Belle Faser is one of those rare types - not only committed to her artistry, but also sharing an assurance and agility translated through her music that belies her years. This remarkable talent is on full display with Faser’s debut EP, Crossing Hermi’s Bridge (out October 16), which shows off her rootsy pop-country sensibilities and bell-clear vocals on seven compositions. Faser’s writing charmingly examines age-appropriate but nonrestrictive topics such as relationships gone both right and awry, the comforts of going home again, and the motives of certain people in one’s life - all carried by a delightfully rippling backdrop of melodies ranging from sweetly reflective to cathartically driving. Putting an exact tag on her sound proves difficult, as she moves smoothly through a variety of sonic directions, including elements of country, pop, rock, and folk. The seven songs on the set were written solely by

Faser, who started unofficially penning tunes at the age of seven and is continually working to expand on her lyrical prowess. “At my age, I don’t have as much life experience as other writers,” she said. “I have to write about what I know - whether it is an experience I’ve actually had in the past or a fear I have about the future. I write about simple things in a simple way that allows room for listeners to reflect on their own life experiences.” The EP’s title seeks to pinpoint the ability of music to cross boundaries between people, as it references a bridge in Faser’s hometown named after Hermione Alexander, a civil rights and social justice activist who died in 1983. “The plaque on the bridge reads ‘She built bridges across gulfs of prejudice and ignorance,’ and that is something that I hope to do in my life through music or in whatever way I can,” said Faser. Vocally, Faser adds plenty of her personal charisma to the recordings, which were captured earlier this spring at The Insanery in Nashville by Grammy Award-winning producer Casey Wood, who’s worked with a staggering roster of talent, including iconic artists Little Richard, Randy Travis, Kenny Rogers, and the recently passed

Charlie Daniels, as well as modern country sensations Randy Houser and Dustin Lynch. While it is tempting to compare the high schooler to another famous young songwriter who forged her path in pop country - Taylor Swift - Faser’s vocals have a different dimension, having drawn from a rich and diverse range of influences such as Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Kenny Loggins, Linda Ronstadt, Eva Cassidy, Lorde, and Tenille Townes. Faser, who is a remarkably confident performer for a teen, honed her delivery by playing live locally - starting, as with her songwriting, at an early age. The first single from the EP, “Better Than Mine,” will be released August 18 and serve as a welcome introduction of Faser’s infectious spirit. Directly following the release of Crossing Hermi’s Bridge, fans will be able to experience Faser’s remarkable talents live on October 17, as she will be opening for fellow Atlanta singer-songwriter Mark Miller at Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, GA. Faser will be showcasing her new music, as well as select favorites from the artists who influenced her throughout the years. Tickets for two showtimes (7 and 9:15 pm) are now available. But, what they – and you – may not realize is that the impact of our mission goes far beyond our direct recipients in hospitals, assisted living homes, hospice, and other community health organizations. Every arrangement delivered also impacts family members, friends, healthcare providers, and our volunteers. Families and friends can see the positive effect that a floral delivery has on their loved ones. “I just visited my mother and saw the beautiful flowers that you delivered to her today. Thank you for making her day and my day so much better!” - Ann, family member Recipients’ healthcare providers and caregivers also get an emotional boost knowing that their patients will be having better days because of the flowers and moments of kindness and connection extended to them. “The beautifully created bouquets provided our patients and staff with a lasting feeling of encouragement and kindness.” - Daniel, healthcare provider

Further, our volunteers often cite the joy that they get in brightening the days of their neighbors as their main reason for working with us. They know that their efforts don’t just provide one better day to a recipient, but many better days as the flowers will be a recurring reminder that someone cared for them and is thinking of them. “One of my friends called to tell me that she was overjoyed when she received a Random Acts of Flowers bouquet while in the hospital, and I was thrilled that one of my friends was the recipient of one of our gifts of encouragement!” - Queen, volunteer This is what Random Acts of Flowers calls “the ripple effect of delivering hope.” The number of lives impacted by a single delivery goes far beyond the recipient. Our deliveries affect family members, friends, caregivers, volunteers, and – hopefully – you, too! If you want to make an impact with Random Acts of Flowers, call 865-633-9082, email info@RAFKnoxville. org, or visit www.RAFKnoxville.org and fill out the individual volunteer form.

~ California Dreaming ~

T

here was once a time during the early years of Tellico Village where the state most commonly represented by its newcomers was Michigan. The marketing during the late 1980s and early 1990s specifically targeted that area, and before you knew it, our community quickly began having a significant representation from the great state of Michigan. More recently, it would seem that the state of California has taken over as the most popular origin for our new residents. There are likely a number of cultural adjustments in making a move from California to Tennessee, and salon visits are not excluded. If you wake up one morning and find yourself suddenly living in lovely East Tennessee, the first thing to do is be very thankful that you have landed in such a wonderful part of the United States. Next, you will of course begin the search for physicians, dentists, and, believe it or not, a salon. The best way to discover any of those relationships is the old-fashioned way, and that is word of mouth. Most states that have a large representation here in Tellico Village have their own clubs. These particular clubs are a nice place to meet others that have already been through, or are currently going through,

the same cultural adjustment you currently find yourself dealing with. Begin by finding others that have a hairstyle that you find desirable and simply ask them a few questions about their hair and their stylist. It is my experience that those who are happy with their hair usually don’t mind talking about it. The grocery store, local restaurants, golf course, and local banks are all good places to find someone who may potentially lead you to the right salon and avoid having to kiss very many frogs along the way. So here is a hearty “welcome” to lovely East Tennessee to all of our new Californians, and hopefully you will all deal with the cultural adjustments without any complications and your salon visits will all be happy and healthy.

nderstandably, most of us are spending considerably more time at home than we have at any other time in the past. As a result, many of us are updating, or planning to update, our home’s interiors and out-of-door living spaces as we facilitate this year’s stay-cation and work from home plans. Garden centers are bursting with homeowners tidying up existing planting areas or creating entirely new ones. Homeowners are night-scaping their homes with exterior LED landscape lighting to create an exciting new nighttime look. Old concrete driveways are being replaced

with beautiful multi-colored, variable sized pavers, further highlighted with beautiful geometric paver patterns. We’re painting inside and out, installing lawn irrigation systems, replacing screened porches with four-season rooms, hardscaping patios and adding built-in grills, ice-makers, and refrigerators. The sky’s the limit as we reallocate 2020’s planned vacation spending to investments in our home to make them more stay-cation and work-at-home friendly. At Amish Elegance in Knoxville, East Tennessee’s number one source for beautifully hand-crafted Amish

furniture, we would like to share with you some exciting new ways that we can help you enhance your stay-cation and work from home plans. For every other room in your home, we offer everything imaginable. That’s because most everything we sell, we create. We are your true all-custom source for all of your furniture needs. Hand-crafted from 100% solid American hardwoods, your furniture will be produced using the wood species you select, custom ordered to your exact specifications, with your choice of stains and finishes. Mural Program Expands with Wall Avenue Project

W

ork was recently completed on a new 12x50 foot mural titled “Windows to the Smokies” by Megan Lingerfelt on the side of the Lerner Lofts building in downtown Knoxville. Located on the prominent corner of Gay Street and Wall Avenue, the mural brings architectural elements from windows found all across the city (including St. John’s Cathedral, The Oliver Hotel, and several other historic buildings) to eye level, inviting the public to experience the blue haze of the Great Smoky Mountains reflected in them. Support for the project was provided by Dogwood Arts, the Downtown Knoxville Alliance, and the Lerner Lofts Homeowners Association. Lingerfelt has worked on a number of murals in Strong Alley and the Greater Knoxville area. She recently completed the restoration of the Dolly Parton Mural in Strong Alley after it was vandalized. “Windows to the Smokies” is the latest and largest addition to the Dogwood Arts Art in Public Places Mural Program, now entering its second year. Megan is one of eight muralists that received funding to create new work during this spring/

summer season. The Art in Public Places Mural Program was established in 2019 to advance existing creative efforts in Strong Alley, transform unique public spaces in our community, provide opportunities for local and regional artists to create new artwork, and improve access to the arts for everyone. Dogwood Arts coordinates and directs this ongoing program in collaboration with artists, property owners, the City of Knoxville, and the Downtown Knoxville Alliance. To date, Dogwood Arts has funded the creation and restoration of 22 murals in downtown Knoxville. Up to this point, efforts have primarily been focused in Strong Alley (between Market Square and Gay Street), which has been a popular canvas for artists and a creative

destination for visitors and residents of the city for more than a decade. “Since 2012, Strong Alley has continued to undergo physical improvements, thanks to collaborative efforts between the city and supportive business owners,” said Kate Creason, Program Manager. “Adding walkway pavers and bistro lighting significantly improved the alley’s pedestrian experience, and with artists consistently creating new work in the alley, the space transforms dramatically, making it one of Knoxville’s most popular downtown promenades and an Instagram hotspot.” The Dogwood Arts’ Mural Program provides artist stipends to cover supplies, equipment rentals, anti-graffiti coating, and other needs related to the creation of new artwork or the restoration of an

places to recreate, and to be close to nature and our national and state parks and forests – all of these desires involve trees and forests. Research has shown trees have an aesthetic value to our health because our awareness of them can lower stress levels, which in turn can decrease elevated heart rates and help us be calmer. But there is more. Trees also have a serious financial impact on our pocketbooks. The National Tree Benefit Calculator (www.treebenefits.com/calculator) is the brainchild of Casey Trees and Davey Tree Expert Co. The calculator allows you to calculate the financial value of a tree. For example, one 20” Eastern White Pine provides overall benefits of $112 per year as follows: $42.42 as a stormwater interceptor, $40.31 in property values, $10.09 in electricity, $9.78 in air quality, $5.10 in natural gas, and $4.20 in CO2 reduced

48 pounds of CO2 each year. They hold carbon and release oxygen through photosynthesis. It is estimated that yearly, U.S. forests (trees) absorb about 10% of our country’s CO2 emissions. Trees uptake fertilizer nutrients (N/P/K or nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) that otherwise could be washed into the lake as pollutants. Trees consume gallons of rainwater that they discharge into the air as oxygen and water vapor. Trees lower air temperature by evaporating water in their leaves. Think about it: Planting trees and shrubs can save you money on your energy bill because they provide shade to your home in the summer and shield your home as windbreakers in the winter. Treeless land opens the door to soil erosion. After a heavy rain, many people observe and then complain about the lake turning brown. That color is due to soil in the increased volume of stormwater running off property due to loss of both the tree leaf canopy and tree roots to hold onto it. Cutting trees off residential and commercial lots is a major cause of soil erosion and also contributes to increased pollution of the lake by allowing chemical pollutants to wash into it. These chemicals stimulate the growth of algae and unwanted shoreline vegetation and have the potential to decrease your home’s property value.

existing piece. Dogwood Arts accepts artist applications to work in the alley on a semi-annual basis; the next round of applications will launch at www.dogwoodarts. com on August 3rd and are due by October 5th, 2020. The 2019-2020 program artists include Cathryn Bozone, Tina Brunetti, Fawne DeRosia, Dawne Hawkins, Sherry Jankiewicz, Linda King, Lauran Lazarus, Megan Lingerfelt, Chance Losher, Sarah Moore, Jing Qin, Cody Swaggerty, Lacey Sutton, Lauren Ray Wagner, Dayna Walton, Stacie Williams, Gwyn Pevonka, and the Boys & Girls Club of the Tennessee Valley. Dogwood Arts intends to expand the program outside of Strong Alley, starting with Megan’s piece on the Lerner Loft building. Business or property owners looking to commission a mural are encouraged to reach out to Dogwood Arts for more information. Dogwood Arts, presented by ORNL Federal Credit Union, is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to promote and celebrate our region’s art, culture, and natural beauty. Trees Help Keep Us Alive and Make Good Neighbors

U

rban and community forestry are new terms in our verbal landscape. The Society of American Foresters’ Forestry Handbook defines urban forestry as “the management of publicly and privately owned lands in and adjacent to urban areas.” Its goals include identification of treasured trees and placement of new trees in communities and educating people about the importance of trees. While everyone doesn’t live in a city, we all live in a community. A community is comprised of residents, businesses, and social and government services, and each community has its pointof-view about trees. Managing the trees in our community is “community forestry,” where trees are managed on an individual basis. Most of us were born elsewhere and chose to come to East Tennessee for a less expensive cost of living, peace and quiet,

Trees around our homes and businesses have tremendous value. And yet, what is the first thing many of us do when building a new home? We let our contractor clear-cut our lot to make it easier to build. That’s a major mistake. If you are planning to build, make sure your builder knows the trees he is not to cut. Look into adding trees for shade, rainwater retention, and reduced stormwater runoff. However, trees grow slowly, so save as many large trees as possible. Do select them carefully, considering views and privacy concerns, and then protect them. Determine and mark the construction equipment pathway because equipment running back and forth over a tree’s roots will compact the soil and, in a year or two, that “to-be-saved” tree will die. If your lot was cleared by previous homeowners, you can fix the problem. You can plant trees and shrubs and renew the beauty, the natural breathing/exhaling cycle, and the soil maintenance of trees while you save money on household operating expenses. Our community can discuss and work for compromise to set priorities between our need for a clean and healthy environment, building contractor’s needs, and our preferences for lake and mountain views and privacy. The “bottom line” is that by saving many existing trees, we create the environment we want, we save money on home operating expenses, we improve the water quality of the lake, and we add to and maintain our home property values. hen you’re a senior citizen, having good friends and being social positively affects you both physically and mentally. Studies have found that socializing can strengthen your immune system, reduce stress, lower blood pressure and the risk of heart disease, as well as sharpen your memory and help you sleep better. Friends cause better overall health because they motivate healthy habits and keep your health on track by helping you stay vigilant. ENTERTAINMENT

Mark Farner BY RANDY PATTERSON, BOOMEROCITY.COM

B

aby boomers, no doubt, remember the iconic group Grand Funk Railroad. The voice from their historic hits was their co-founder, Mark Farner, who also wrote their epic hits, “I’m Your Captain (Closer to Home)” and “Bad Time.” Farner was with the band until their temporary breakup in 1976. Since those days, he has enjoyed a successful solo career, even after GFR “re-banded.” I first interviewed Farner nine years ago. That interview is still viewable on www.boomerocity.com and is an eye-opening, jaw-dropping chat. Recently I had the opportunity to chat with him again. I knew it was going to be another interesting conversation. In the last interview, Farner spoke extensively about the care he and his wife, Lesia, gave to their son, Jessie, who was totally paralyzed from an accident. Since that conversation, Jessie, sadly, passed away. As our conversation began, I started off by expressing my belated condolences on their loss. “I thank you for saying that, brother Randy,” said Farner. “And you know, he’s whole now. This is the only way we can really, in this earthly present tense, you know... what we are right now in this bone suit... because when you lose your child, it’s like you have that big hole. I heard it described very well as being ‘love with no place to go.’ And that’s what it is. You love them, but you can’t show them. But we know he is whole. Now he is back where he came from.” When there’s not a pandemic throwing a wrench in artist tours, Farner keeps up quite an active touring schedule. I asked him what his crowds consist of. “A lot of the fans bring their children,” he said. “The older fans bring their kids, bring their moms and dads. I had I think one of the oldest World War II veterans left alive - at 94 years old - last year when he came to the show at the casino. His son brought him - a veteran - and when I see people like that, my heart goes out, my love goes out to them. And the exciting part for me is that his son brought him because he thought enough of my music to bring his dad to an experience, a Mark Farner’s American Band show. That speaks volumes about the young people that are showing up. I’m telling you, teenagers that are rocking with me, and especially when we do South America, oh my gosh! They come out by the thousands; the young people fill the places up and they rock American style. They love me down there because I am who my songs say I am.” As Mark Farner fans already know, after he left GFR, he enjoyed a successful career in Contemporary Christian Music. I asked him if he planned to re-enter the genre with new music. “No,” he said. “I’m open to my heart, what’s coming

into my heart. I’ve got a completely different view of the church now that I’ve died and came back to life, I’m telling you. You just have a different take on life in general. And the debt-consciousness that prevails in society is changed. When you start going to a church, all you do is you take on the church’s debt consciousness. It changes from the world to the church, but there’s debt consciousness, and it’s contrary to the Word and contrary to reason.” What’s on Farner’s radar for the next year or so? “We’re gonna release the 2017 video of Santiago,” he said. “It’s ‘From Chile with Love - Mark Farner’s American Band’, and we’re working on another video with... did you see the ‘Can’t Stop’ video, the YouTube ‘Can’t Stop’... the same producer and same people are getting together; they want me to put my head together with them and come up with another video. And that’s going to be within the next couple of months here.” With our chat wrapping up and still getting my head around his back-from-death story, I asked Farner how he hoped to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “You know, dying and coming back will definitely change your life around,” he said. “Reprioritize. I want to be remembered as a farm boy with a big dream to save the world with a song and my guitar and go out there and spread love, peace; be used of the Great Spirit to make people smile and to bring light to the darkness.” Mark Farner had a lot more to say than could be shared in this article. You can read it all at www.boomerocity. com. You can also keep up on the latest with Farner by visiting his website at www.MarkFarner.com.

Pam Tillis

BY RANDY PATTERSON, BOOMEROCITY.COM

L

ike many of you Pam Tillis fans, I first became aware of her music in 1991 with the release of her album, “Put Yourself in My Place.” Being a fan of her famous dad, the late Mel Tillis, it was easy to become a fan of Pam’s. Talented, beautiful, and engaging, she made lifelong fans the world over. Pam has a new album out entitled “Looking for a Feeling” that, once again, knocks it out of the park with great, well-written, genre-blending, and stretching songs that will have you slapping the repeat button on your media player countless times. The new album afforded me the opportunity to chat with Pam recently for the first time. The album is definitely one you should purchase, with every song being great and radio worthy. I started off my conversation with Pam by telling her that. “I’m so thrilled to hear that kind of comment, because I kind of, I don’t know, I guess in some ways unintentionally, but in some ways intentionally - I kind of live in my own little musical bubble a little bit,” said Pam. “I was on the road all the time, and it’s funny, sometimes I’ll get tired. I’m funny about listening to too many other artists. Like when I go in and make a record, I don’t want to listen to too many current artists, because I don’t want to be influenced. I’ve actually heard a couple other people say that I want to be unique and I want to try to do my own thing, but I did kind of pull from my influences of the past. “But anyway, I worked really hard on that record,

and you don’t ever know how it’s gonna be received. I was actually pretty nervous about it, because it isn’t like everything that’s in style. It’s just me doing me. I’ve been really thrilled with the reviews, but it’s frustrating to not be able to get out there and promote it live. I think it will perform great live. I really do. I did have one concert with my trio, and that was good. But, you know, it would just be so great to just do the whole record with the band. Hopefully it’ll find its way into people’s hearts.” I asked Pam which song on “Looking for a Feeling” would she point to as a calling card for the whole album. “Wow. Well, I really love ‘My Kind of Medicine’. I really love ‘Burning Star’. I think those things are kind of indicative of the breadth of the record - you know, the span of it.” Pam said this about the feedback on the album so far: “A lot of strong, strong reviews. People are saying, ‘This is genuinely good.’ I don’t know. I mean, I always try to do the strongest record I can do, but people seem to think this one is really credible and relevant. Everybody can tell that I didn’t phone it in.” Wrapping up our fascinating call, I asked Pam how she wanted to be remembered and what she hoped her legacy would be. “Wow. Well, if you’re talking to artists, it’s a little different than the way you might phrase it to your fans. But to put the best, to give your best, is an act of love. And to make music that has integrity and has meaning to people, that’s a big deal. To make a song that means

something to somebody and they’ve made it part of the soundtrack of their life, it’s a reason people show up at your concerts. And the things that they say to you: ‘You were my first CD I bought or my first cassette I bought’, or ‘I wore this record out’. When it becomes a part of their life, that’s just an amazing thing to get to be a part of. And, you know, you can’t let it go to your head, because it took a team to get you there. It took all the musicians that played on your record and all the songwriters that you co-wrote with or recorded with. It’s very much a group effort that got you there.” What is definitely clear is that Pam Tillis is still putting out great music worthy of our attention, addition to our listening libraries, and airtime on radio. You can order “Looking for a Feeling” and keep up with Pam by visiting her website at www.PamTillis.com. There is also much more to this interview that you can read at www. boomerocity.com.

Make the Smoky Mountains Your Happy Place

M

any people find happiness in the Smoky Mountains. Burdens seem to roll off as the stately mountains come in sight. The Smokies are a restful place to retreat from the busyness of life and to be restored and refreshed by their beauty and serenity. Life is just better in the mountains. Having grown up in Gatlinburg, Carol experienced the splendor of the mist-shrouded Smokies that greeted her each morning as Mt. LeConte stood majestically outside her bedroom window. “My childhood was filled with the joys of living in the mountains,” Carol remembered. “My days were spent outside exploring, hiking, picking blueberries, sledding, building forts, and eating family meals on our front porch picnic table. My parents’ love of the mountains not only overflowed to my siblings and me, but also to everyone they met. They welcomed relatives and friends into our home who wanted to visit the Smokies.” In the 1970s, Gatlinburg’s popularity grew, and the local mom and pop hotels could not meet the demand for rooms. Visitors found themselves stranded with nowhere to stay. “Because the hotel owners trusted Mom and Dad, they asked them to take these desperate vacationers into their home,” Carol explained. “Our family would scramble to clean a bedroom and bathroom in time to welcome weary travelers to our mountain home.” Carol’s parents’ opportunities for hospitality continued to grow. Neighbors with vacation homes on the mountain began to leave their keys with her mom and dad, so her parents could rent their homes. As Gatlinburg grew into a year-round vacation destination, people began to buy properties as a rental investment. As a result, Carol’s parents began managing more and more rental properties. Mountain Laurel Chalets Management Company was born – a true family business. “My siblings and I answered our home

phone, Mountain Laurel Chalets, how may I help you?” Carol recalled. “We were reservationists, cleaners, laundry workers, customer service representatives, remodelers, and decorators. While in college, my siblings and I recruited friends to help us clean cabins on busy fall and holiday weekends. We had a blast with our friends, and they enjoyed the extra spending money they earned.” Carol considers it a privilege to have grown up in a family who loved combining life and business together as they endeavored to bless others through their hospitality. Carol’s mom and dad are gone. They left her with this wonderful legacy of six incredible rental cabins nestled in the Smokies, which became Trillium Family Properties to be shared with families like yours. Imagine cool mountains breezes, the sound of gentle winds rustling through the surrounding trees, the smell of pine trees, an abundance of wildlife, and a crackling fire at sunset. And of course, the awe-inspiring views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Trillium Family Properties looks forward to the opportunity to share our mountains with you, your children, and grandchildren. Why not begin creating a lifetime of fond memories by contacting us today and reserving your family getaway or staycation? Why not start your own family legacy in the mountains? Say Hello to the Last Deck Board You’ll Ever Need

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2020

L

et’s be honest, wooden deck boards just don’t cut it. They twist, warp, splinter, and require pressure washing and refinishing. And forget walking on them in your bare feet. Many of us replaced these old wooden deck boards with newer composite deck boards that, while more attractive than their wooden cousins, are easily stained and promote the growth of mold and mildew. Yes, you can pressure wash and bleach the mold and mildew away, but it will likely return after just a few short months. Well, say hello to the last deck board you’ll ever need. Manufactured from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with fiberglass, this revolutionary decking from WearDeck boasts the highest live load rating in the industry, resulting in unparalleled strength and durability. The deck boards are weatherproof, waterproof, and heat-reflective. Rated for ground contact and underwater installation, WearDeck will be the last deck board you’ll ever need. WearDeck is available in eight different colors and profiles in up to 28’ lengths. Every WearDeck board incorporates heat-reflective technology, a proprietary mixture of additives, and a limited lifetime warranty. Splinter-free and heat-reflective, WearDeck decking provides permanent static protection and an embossed wood grain surface for excellent slip-resistance. WearDeck also comes in two new barefoot colors designed to keep feet cool and comfortable on even the hottest days. Ready to replace those tired and worn out deck boards on your boat dock and deck? Just call Mountain View Dock & Deck Repair for a free, no-obligation consultation and estimate. here’s no denying that due to advances in medicine, we’re all living longer. But, ask yourself, does greater longevity increase the likelihood that I may require long-term care in the future? The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimates that at least 50% of Americans 65 years of age and older will require some form of long-term care and that 15% of these individuals will require care for five or more years. Will you have the necessary financial resources should you require LTC? Traditional long-term care insurance can be expensive, and monthly premiums will likely continue to rise. And the downside of traditional LTC insurance, for many, is that “if you don’t use it, you lose it” – the premiums are spent. QUARTZ ◆ GLASS ◆ STONE Clients of mine, a husband and wife, asked me if there was an alternative to conventional LTC insurance. They were motivated to act after both his father and stepmother were placed in long-term care facilities at a combined cost of $18,000 per month in the Chicago area. His father passed away, but his stepmother is still in the same facility five years later. So what was the solution I offered my clients? It’s called Asset-Based Long-Term Care Insurance. My clients transferred a modest lump sum of money from one of their savings accounts to an Asset-Based Long-Term care insurance provider, which purchased LTC coverage for both of them. No additional payments were required, and all of the benefits were guaranteed at issuance. It works like this. You transfer a lump sum or make multiple deposits to an Asset-Based Long-Term Care provider that best meets your needs. This creates a tax-free LTC benefit pool that is worth a multiplied amount of your original investment. You can access these benefits for home health care, assisted living, and full-skilled care. If circumstances change, you can receive your premium back. Or, if you should pass away without receiving any longterm care benefits, there is a tax-free death benefit for your heirs. It really is a winning combination. Long-term care may be unavoidable for many of us, but fortunately, there are affordable alternatives to traditional Granite Transformations Can Help You Create LTC insurance. You Protect Your Car with a Garage... So How Do You Protect Your Boat?

By Patrick Boring, Certified Touchless Boat Cover Manager, Lifetime Docks, LLC stablished in 1997, Lifetime Docks, LLC has earned a reputation for superior craftsmanship, honesty, and integrity. Our expertise is why in August 2018, the Touchless Boat Cover company selected Lifetime Docks to become their exclusive representative for the sale, design, installation, and maintenance of their revolutionary and patented Touchless Boat Cover systems. Imagine a season on the water without the headache of having to clean your boat nearly every time you take your boat out. Instead, imagine pressing the button on your wireless key fob and stepping onto your watercraft and out onto the lake for a day of family fun in the sun. Say goodbye forever to boat cover snaps, straps and bungee cords, and bugs. Benefits to the Touchless Boat Cover: » Allows you to cover/uncover your boat in 30 seconds with a wireless key fob. » Saves you many hours of cleaning/waxing each season. » Protects the interior AND exterior of your boat from damaging UV rays and the elements, unlike a traditional snap-on cover. » Boaters say that they actually use their boats more often. Boaters often will pass on a 30 minute boat ride rather than spending 20 minutes to remove their traditional boat cover and 20 minutes to replace it. » Your investment made in the Touchless Cover comes back to you in a much higher resale value when you sell or trade in your boat in the future because it will still look showroom new. » You can select from 10 custom fabric colors. » Saves you $1,000s in boat detailing and re-gelcoating costs. » 5-year warranty protection. To underscore our commitment to our customers, Lifetime Docks, LLC has named me their Touchless Boat Cover Manager. My sole responsibility, and that of our dedicated team of certified technicians at Lifetime Docks, is the sale, installation, and maintenance of our Touchless Boat Covers. You protect your investment in your automobiles, so why not your boat? Like a garage on the water, I invite you to discover just how affordable your very own Touchless Boat Cover system can be. Call me today to set up your nocost, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a season of family memories on the water and not on the dock cleaning your P boat. R

TRUST The Beauty (and Proper Fit) of Custom Window Treatments

10 years!

Fitting store bought drapery to your custom windows can prove a real challenge—or disaster.

Some homeowners struggle with cabinets that extend back to a corner, which makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50% and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4: Tricky space under the sink

We will professionally measure, design (with concepts and drawings) and install your custom window treatment to fit properly and look great for years to come! Our professional custom window designs are custom made to fit any type of window you may have—even those difficult ones you have no idea what to do with!

The area under the sink is hard to reach and keep organized. A ShelfGenie under-sink Glide Out with a riser shelf is custom designed to your cabinet to avoid pipes, hoses, and the garbage disposal so it maximizes your usable space - and increases access. Issue #5: Hard-to-reach spaces

The windows of your home are custom made to fit the architecture of your home. Why not show off that architecture and the beauty beyond the window with custom window treatments?

- Sandy ASK ABOUT OUR SPECIAL OFFER FOR WHOLE HOME CUSTOM WINDOW TREATMENTS! For safety and peace of mind for all, we will be wearing masks while in your home.

Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping frequently used items up front can help. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier Issue #2: High overhead cabinets If you have a high cabinet that is hard to reach, consider putting in vertical dividers to use this space to store flat items such as baking sheets and trays. You can reach each item at the bottom, which makes access much easier. Issue #3: Blind corner cabinet

We often get calls from people with sagging rods that don't function properly, draperies that are way too long—or too short, and sun issues that need to be addressed before everything it hits fades.

Give your home quality custom window coverings it merits by calling us for a complimentary inhome consultation. We look forward to hearing from you!

Issue #1: Deep or narrow pantry shelves

For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6: In-the-way trashcans FURNITURE | BEDDING | WALL & FLOOR COVERINGS | WINDOW TREATMENTS | LIGHTING | ART | ACCESSORIES | HUNTER DOUGLAS

Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month August, 2020, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 5B

F

elicity is a six-yearold American Pit Bull mix who weighs 43 pounds. She came to the shelter as a stray. She would love to find her forever home and bring her joy and happiness to a new family. Shelby is a puppy, at only four months old. She currently weighs 14.5 pounds and is a hound mix. It’s rare for us to have such a young pup available for adoption! Many people prefer adopting dogs when they’re puppies. Puppies bring a different set of challenges than an older dog. At this age, you can expect another five months to be Shelby challenging. It’s like raising a toddler. One of the first things you should do is get a crate. A crate will give the puppy a place of safety and solitude. Toss treats into the crate and say “in” so he associates the crate with positive things. Be sure the crate is just the right size for the puppy. If it’s too big, the puppy will use one end for bathroom behaviors. You also need to schedule regular feedings, as well as potty breaks, to help him learn proper potty training. Never punish your puppy for accidents. This is the time to get your puppy used to people of all shapes and sizes, as well as other animals, such as cats and dogs. You can carry treats around with you to give to people who will then give them to your puppy. This helps to associate good things with all kinds of individuals and avoids your dog from becoming aggressive. Teaching puppies not to bite is one of the most important lessons. Remember that your dog craves your approval but also needs your guidance. If he bites, say “no!” and remove your attention from him. New experiences are important for puppy development. Help stimulate your puppy’s mind with puzzle toys and appropriate playthings, as well as giving your puppy plenty of outdoor exercise. Bored dogs are more likely to engage in aggressive or inappropriate behaviors. The best advice is to talk to the staff at the shelter. They have a wealth of knowledge.

Kittens, Kittens, Kittens!

It is kitten season, and the Monroe County Animal Shelter has kittens galore! We’d love to get them out of the shelter and into a foster home. Kittens in a foster home solves two problems: It provides needed socialization for the kittens, and it frees up space at the shelter for incoming kittens. If you can help and think you would like to foster kittens, please call the shelter at 423-442-1015. Everything you need for fostering these babies will be provided! You can see some of these kittens at www. MonroeCountyFriendsofAnimals.org/availablepets_cats. The shelter also has many cats and kittens available for adoption. Size, color, personality you choose. There are Calicos and Tabby cats: Black, black & white, orange, and even one that is all white. Call to schedule a visit to choose your new best friend. Adult cats have the lowest adoption rate. This is really sad because adult cats can be just as cute and precious as kittens. Here are a few out of many reasons why people should consider adopting an adult cat over a kitten. An adult cat has already developed its personality. When you adopt an adult cat, the shelter may be able to provide you with information about its temperament so you can see whether the kitty is a good choice for you and your family. A kitten is still developing, and it’s hard to tell what personality it will have in the future. The size and appearance of an adult cat are also apparent. Kids can be rough with kittens even when they don’t mean to. Adult cats, especially those with placid personalities, are usually more patient and adaptable to such treatment. Beyond doubt, children need to be taught to treat the animal respectfully, but kittens are much more unpredictable and rambunctious.

Adult cats are better for seniors. They are loving and calm, so they are often a wiser choice for a senior, especially if they are over 70 or are disabled in any way. When you get older, you get wiser. This is applicable to cats, too. Older cats know there are more important things in life than toys and fun. They appreciate comfort you can provide them with as they grow older. It has also been reported many times that adult cats rescued from a difficult life situation and adopted later on become extremely affectionate and grateful. They know how lucky they are to be in your care! You can save a life by adopting a beautiful, older, and wiser adult cat. You won’t regret it, because he or she simply won’t let you! All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. You can visit Felicity, Shelby, and the other dogs and cats at the Monroe County Animal Shelter, located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart). Hours are Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Call 423-442-1015 to confirm the shelter’s hours due to COVID-19. The shelter is currently filled to near maximum capacity, so we are looking for people to help foster some of the animals (especially now). Many of the animals are housebroken, sweet, and family-friendly. They are often placed in the shelter because their owners are no longer able to care for them. If you are interested, email animal.shelter@monroetn. com or call the shelter at 423-442-1015, and they will put you in touch with Cathy Barrett, Foster Coordinator. Also, the Monroe County Sherriff’s Office has placed the trustees on lockdown; therefore, the shelter is in desperate need of volunteers to walk the dogs and assist with other shelter needs. There are many different tasks for everyone! If you are able to help, please call the shelter.

August In the Garden

6B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2020

I

by

t is August again. That means it is hot, humid, and generally unpleasant to be outside during any part of the day other than early morning and evening. August is also the month where I historically ask you to reflect on your spring and summer gardening to see what worked and what didn’t, so let’s start there. Did you do a vegetable garden this year? Was it the first time? For 16 million Americans, it was. How did it do? Make your notes about survival, production, disease and insect damage, and satisfaction. Did you plant too many peppers and not enough tomatoes? Did squash bugs infest your zucchini? I know that it is extremely easy to get discouraged if your garden wasn’t a raging success, or overwhelmed if it was, but you need to learn from your mistakes and prepare for next year! You have time to research, amend your soil, and do all sorts of things that will make next year better. You don’t expect a 1st grader to know the same things that a college graduate does, so don’t beat yourself up if things didn’t work out the way you had planned. Assess and adapt. Did you do any landscaping this year? How did that go? Are your plants surviving, thriving, or dying? Since I started on this topic, let me provide a little information that you need in case things didn’t go so well and you have to make some changes. Here are the problems I see on a daily basis: » The number one problem is wrong plant, wrong place. Azaleas, Rhododendrons, and other shade lovers are planted in full sun, where they cook like chickens on a grill. Crepe Myrtles, roses, and other sun lovers are placed in shady areas where they will not bloom. Acid lovers (azaleas, roses, etc.) are placed in an area where the pH is too high, and they starve to death. How do you avoid these mistakes? Go to a garden center where they have educated employees! We can help. » Number two is overplanting. Always read the tag to see what the mature size will be, and plant them at least that far from their neighbor. It makes me so sad when I see

trees planted 4’ apart, or a cute landscape that I know is going to look overcrowded in three years. You have wasted your money on plants you didn’t need, and a plant is giving its life because you didn’t plan for it to grow. » Trees planted too close to a house is another big no-no. The rule of thumb is that it should by half of its mature size away from a wall. This means a tree that is going to get 20’ tall should be 10’ from your house. One of our customers last year was going to re-do her landscape, but all the money they had saved ended up going to foundation repairs because the builder put an Oak tree 3’ from her house! » Be careful being cheap. A “good deal” isn’t so good if you have to do it again, whether it be cheap plants or cheap labor. A cheap plant can bring in disease and insects, and cheap labor that doesn’t do the work necessary to make sure the plants are properly planted is money thrown away. On the other hand, be suspicious of professional plans that seem excessive. If you have questions, stop by. I have seen “landscapers” put 15 plants in where five would do or apply 6” or more of mulch when 3”

We also have landscapers that have moved here from different climates, so they may be accustomed to different plants, soil, and sun exposure. Please do your research! » The last problem, and one of the biggest, is not planning for adequate water. I sometimes hear “I want a plant I won’t have to water.” I suggest people looking for those stick with artificial. I also often hear “I have a sprinkler system.” Sprinklers are designed for grass and flowers, not trees and shrubs. Those will need to be supplemented until they are “established,” and shrubs are not considered established for at least a year. Trees take three years. If you aren’t prepared to set up a drip system, use a tree bag, or hand water your

plants until they are established (or longer, if we have a drought), then don’t get them. I’m reading over this and I sound a little grumpy. I don’t mean to be, so I guess I’m just tired. It has been an interesting year to say the least, and we have no idea when and if things will return to normal. I hope that the trend to work in your yard continues and that more of you are learning to enjoy getting your hands in the dirt. If there is anything we can do to foster that love, please let us know! UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month

Say Howdy to This Plant from the Wild West By Carol Reese, UT Extension Western Region Horticulturist

Hesperaloe parviflora is native to west Texas and northeastern Mexico, so you can imagine that it is quite heat and drought tolerant. Many plants from these arid regions cannot tolerate the humidity and denser soils of the southeastern United States, but hesperaloe has done so admirably. Obviously, plant it in soils with good drainage and be aware that it flowers best with lots of hot sunlight, although it is surprisingly tolerant of a few hours of shade. Hummingbirds eagerly seek out the multiple small coral red flowers that stud the branching panicles, conveniently launched high on flowering stems over the foliage. Flowering can continue throughout the summer months, and over the years, this durable plant will slowly broaden, adding several more flowering stems to make quite a show. Expect some

S

ome plants feature beautiful flowers, others have interesting foliage, and still others are known for their strong architectural form. Hesperaloe parviflora provides all three. This plant is called a number of common names that include red yucca, coral yucca, false red yucca, and Texas red yucca; however, it is not a yucca at all. Other valid reasons to avoid using this plant’s common names are that yellow-flowering cultivars can be found, but the best reason is that the accurate name is truly easy to pronounce. Just substitute the consonants and make it rhyme with “desperado.” In fact, I suffer with the “ear worm” of the Eagles’ song that goes by that name whenever I look at this plant!

variability in flowering due to clonal differences and variations on siting. Weather may also play roles. There is little reason to lament the end of the flowering period. Hesperaloe’s appealing icy blue foliage springs from a central base as a yucca would, but the long curving leaves are rigid and narrow, and “prickle free.” It doesn’t form trunks, but grows wider and more densely each year until it takes on the appearance of a large, stiff grass. Use it as a component of winter interest in the landscape, where it pairs handsomely with conifers or even in winter containers as a sculptural statement.

In the ground, a well-established hesperaloe should be hardy throughout all of Tennessee, and some sites rate it hardy to zone 5 as long as roots are not in too much moisture. Be aware that dry soils in summer are not always so in winter, so site accordingly. The UT Gardens, Jackson, has hesperaloe displayed in the parking lot beds northeast of the building. At the UT Gardens, Knoxville, look for it along the perennial walk as you head to the rose garden. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville, and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit utia.tennessee.edu/statebotanical-garden.

or years, individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not anymore. In recent times, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, Letgo, and similar sites have been used. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell any number of household items by themselves. In fact, those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the effort? Do you really want to invite strangers into your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying no-shows? We launched Premiere Consignment eight years ago with the goal of helping our neighbors sell their gently used, name brand furniture, art pieces, home décor items, and Oriental rugs without all of the hassle associated with attempting to sell their unused household items themselves. We offer our consigners a complete turnkey experience, which greatly enhances their potential to sell their items at the best possible prices for both the buyer and seller. Our convenient retail showroom location and hours, in addition to our print and online advertising, ensures that your items will be seen by even more qualified buyers. Premiere Consignment handles the entire transaction from beginning to end. No sitting at home waiting for strangers to arrive or wondering if their check is good. We also offer you the opportunity to market many of your personal items online using our very own and very successful eBay store. So forget the ad in the local paper or on Craigslist, put away the yard sale signs, and discover the safe, easy, and most convenient way to sell your gently used furniture, décor, art, and Oriental rugs – the no-hassle, Premiere Consignment way. This underdeck system will ensure that all of your family events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain, the searing summertime sun, and the snow and sleet of winter. “Now is a great time to weatherproof all of your out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you, each step of the way, until your project is completed to your satisfaction.” While Undercover Systems’ patented underdecking system allows you to extend your outdoor season of enjoyment by protecting your family from August’s relentless sun, autumn rains, and winter snow, sleet, and ice, you’ll also appreciate their attention to detail, which comes from their years of experience, as they help you to craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, designed to perfectly complement your home’s existing architecture and landscaping. Using only proprietary components, and not those generic, one-size-fits-all, off the shelf components from the big box stores used by the competition, your underdeck system will have that “custom” finish you’re looking for. A complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau, Undercover Systems offers homeowners the peace of mind that they deserve in a building contractor. Why not surprise your family today with a special out-of-doors gift that the entire family can enjoy all year long and start creating a lifetime of family memories? Electric Shock Drowning:

A Silent Killer

A

By Patrick Boring, Lifetime Docks, LLC

ccording to WebMD, Electric Shock Drowning, or ESD, “happens when an electric current - typically a low-level AC current from boats, docks, hoists or lights - ‘escapes’ and shocks nearby swimmers. The shock paralyzes them, so they can’t swim or help themselves.” Fortunately, there is a device called ShockIQ that can prevent ESD by monitoring the water around your dock for stray electricity. If stray electricity is detected, a siren sounds and the system’s monitor light flashes. Power to your dock is shut down instantly, and your ShockIQ system goes on battery backup and continues to monitor for electricity. To learn how to protect yourself and your loved ones from Electric Shock Drownings, call me at 423-566-7401 today. Established in 1997, Lifetime Docks has earned a reputation for superior craftsmanship, honesty, and integrity. Lifetime Docks is the master distributor of ShockIQ in East Tennessee and has also been selected by the Touchless Boat Cover company to become their exclusive representative for the sale, design, installation, and maintenance of their revolutionary and patented Touchless Boat Cover systems.
