Delivering Extraordinary Results One Home at a Time

C

ertaPro Painters of East Tennessee, a complaint free member of the Better Business Bureau in 2020, has been delivering extraordinary results to area homes and businesses for nearly 2 decades. Because painting is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to update and protect your home’s interior and exterior surfaces, growing numbers of East Tennesseans have come to rely on CertaPro Painters. Offering a worry-free experience from start to finish, locallyowned CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee has earned a reputation for superior customer service and craftsmanship. After visiting CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee offices, one thing became abundantly clear – every CertaPro team member genuinely enjoys their chosen careers. Each member embraces the contribution they make in the total customer service experience. From the first customer contact through the “Pride Walk” at the completion of every project, each member is confident in the knowledge that the CertaPro Painters team delivered results designed to exceed your expectations. East Tennessee’s Mountain Views recently spoke with CertaPro Painters president, Devin Taylor and associates to discover just what makes them rise above the competition to deliver superior customer experiences. Here’s a portion of those interviews: ETMV: What does CertaPro Painters offer that other painting contractors might not? Devin: We focus on our level of service and the experience our customers receive. There are many painters out there, but few are as easy to do business with as CertaPro. We want to make our customers’ experience easy and worry-free. We do that by implementing proven and time-tested processes for everything we do. This allows us to provide a consistent experience from project to project. Andy Barton, Director of Residential Operations, along with Matt Riley,

» Re-texturing Drywall and Ceilings The team at CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee is excited to be the most trusted and referred house painters in the entire Knoxville area. They are committed to delivering experience and customer care at every stage of your residential or commercial painting project.

Director of Residential Sales, and Melissa Smith, Scheduling Coordinator, offered their insights on this important issue. Andy: I think it’s the overall attention to each job, regardless of how large or small it is. We say that we paint lives, not houses, and we work very hard to deliver on that promise to each and every homeowner we have the privilege to work with. We put great emphasis on remembering that we are working on or in the largest investment most people will ever make - their homes. It’s not just caring about the paint we apply; it’s valuing the emotions and memories our clients associate with their homes. Matt: It’s definitely our genuine concern for our customers’ needs. I really try to take the time to listen to customers, not just be an order taker, and present solutions that fit within their desired outcomes and budget. Melissa: I interact with all of our Job Site Supervisors on a daily basis. These incredible team members take tremendous pride in their workmanship - many of them have been with us for years. We offer a consistency of character that not all businesses can provide today. ETMV: What are some of the biggest benefits that CertaPro customers are likely

to experience? Devin: The certainty of a job well done. At CertaPro, we have processes in place to ensure things go smoothly, and if for any reason we hit a bump in the road, we have management teams in place to address any issue that might arise. Carl Lemmon, CertaPro’s Residential Service Manager, and Kimble Manuel and Jacob Thurber, two of the Residential Sales Associates, added: Carl: Quality and service. Our painters and carpenters take extreme pride and ownership in their work. Our management team is always available to answer all of your questions and to guide you in your decisions. You will never be left guessing about costs, what’s going on with your project, or when it will be completed. Kimble: As a reliable, trustworthy contractor, we know it is nerve-racking inviting people into your home, but you can trust CertaPro from beginning to end to get the job done right. We have been locally owned for 18 years and make sure that your project goes according to the agreed upon plan. Jacob: We are also proud of the fact that CertaPro is the most referred company in Knoxville, and that speaks a lot to what

HHHHH we are providing our customers! Because we deliver exceptional experiences, people want to tell their family, friends, and co-workers. With multiple levels of management on each project, we fulfill our promises, and I think that means a lot to the East Tennessee community. ETMV: What do you enjoy most about working at CertaPro? Carl: I have an awesome team to support me in my role and really enjoy helping our customers to transform one of the most personal things in their life to something they have always wanted or dreamed of. It is a great feeling to be a part of that transformation and to bring joy and happiness to someone through painting. Matt: I love working with people. I get to meet 3-4 new families each day, learning about their lifestyles, work and what makes them go. Being able to help them accomplish a project, care-free, in their busy lives, just keeps me motivated daily. Andy: This job is great because of the people. I have the opportunity to meet and get to know several hundred people each year. It is incredibly rewarding when we deliver on the promises made to every Continued on page 2A ...

Most of them have been with us for several years, so we have been able to really get to know them and even their families. I love being a part of that experience. Harry Puckett, Residential Service Manager, and Jim Mazrimas, Residential Sales Associate, also responded. Harry: There is an obvious “family” environment here. Everyone that works at CertaPro understands that teamwork is essential to getting projects completed successfully. There is a real sense of pride in doing their jobs well that I appreciate. Jim: CertaPro presents an opportunity for me to help a homeowner protect and beautify the largest single investment that they will likely own. Whether a small condo or a large home, we are there to help them customize their living spaces to their desires. We do not think of ourselves as salespeople as much as we think of ourselves as consultants and problem solvers. ETMV: What personal business philosophy do

you embrace? Kimble: It’s simple - I always try to put myself in the other person’s shoes. This really helps bridge any gaps in understanding. Jim: The philosophy I bring to every customer estimate is to serve as a consultant to listen to your needs, then offer the best available options to bring those needs to fruition. I want a homeowner to be comfortable with me as a person first and confident that I will be able to provide them with the best options or solutions available. Jacob: Don’t make excuses; just make improvements to the process. Devin: And always treat people the way you want to be treated. At the end of the day, we want to ensure that we are listening to our customers’ needs and ultimately meeting or exceeding their expectations. ETMV: CertaPro Painters of East Tennessee has been the recipient of a number of awards recognizing your achievements. Tell our readers about some of CertaPro’s business and individuals’ achievements? We have won the award four times and have been a finalist for half of the years we have been in business. We have earned more nominations and wins than any other CertaPro company in the system. ETMV: Is there anything else you would like East Tennessee’s Mountain Views to tell our readers? Devin: In addition to residential and commercial interior and exterior painting, we also provide all levels of drywall, carpentry, and remodeling work as we strive to become your “one-stop resource shop.” We would especially like to take this opportunity to thank our many loyal customers. set so loud it nearly blew me out of the car. ETMV: What effect did your personal hearing experience have on you? Robert: When I realized what a difference being able to hear “normally” again made in my life, I wanted others with hearing loss (especially those who may not even realize or accept that they are suffering) to know how easy it can be to get back into life fully. That’s why, even though I was retired, I went back to school to become licensed and certified in Tennessee to be able to test peoples’ hearing, and if appropriate for them, fit them with proper hearing aid devices. And I know this may sound “hokey”, but I’m still “retired” – that is, I don’t consider this a job. I do it because I just want to help people with hearing loss get as close as possible back to “normal” hearing so they do not miss out on any parts of their life. I want them to have the best possible hearing experience at the lowest cost possible. ETMV: What do you mean by saying people are missing out on parts of their lives? Robert: One of the main effects of hearing loss is social isolation due to not taking part in conversations because you can’t hear them. Brain scans have shown that it literally takes too much effort and energy to keep up. Social isolation

definitely leads to a diminished quality of life. Also, much new research has shown that hearing loss increases risk of cognitive decline and dementia. And as we age, falls become more common, and for those with impaired hearing the incidence is much higher because your hearing is essential for balance. Hearing loss is the third leading cause of disability, ranking only behind arthritis and heart disease. ETMV: Robert, how can I learn more or assist others who may be experiencing hearing loss? Robert: My first recommendation is to avoid inaction. The sooner you act, the better the outcome. Also, as one who has experienced hearing loss firsthand, I’d encourage you to call me and to learn from my personal experience. I would like to personally invite you to call today to schedule a free, no obligation hearing test. The ABCs of Invisalign

Your New Smile is Waiting!

D

The Clear Alternative to Braces

By Jonathan Bradshaw, DDS

eciding to transform your smile is a big step. That’s why I meet with patients on almost a daily basis in order to help them decide the best way to proceed. Up until recently, patients relied on the traditional metal braces that most of us are familiar with. Fortunately, today patients can now take advantage of a brand new technology from Invisalign. These clear aligners from Invisalign represent an all-new and exciting alternative to traditional metal braces. They are: » Virtually invisible » Easily removable for eating and drinking » Easily removable for brushing and flossing » Comfortable If you’re ready to see if Invisalign is right for you, just call our office to schedule your no-cost, no-obligation consultation. If you’re ready to get started, we will create your very own personalized treatment plan. Your treatment plan begins with a precise digital scan (no goopy putty required). Next, your digital scan is used to create your custom aligners. Your custom aligners are carefully designed to gently shift your teeth in stages to achieve your desired smile. Patients typically wear aligners for a minimum of 20 hours per day and replace aligners at two-week intervals during the treatment period. Because each of our teeth is surrounded by periodontal ligaments that permit controlled movement at the teeth, Invisalign aligners gently realign your teeth by shifting them to the new desired location. If you’re ready to discover that perfect smile, I encourage you to call Heritage Family Dentistry at 865-816-9211 to schedule your free consultation. Our compassionate and caring dental care professionals can help you achieve that healthy looking smile that you’ve been dreaming of. At Heritage Family Dentistry, we offer every member of your family a full range of dental services, including routine dental care, cosmetic dentistry, crowns and bridges, Invisalign orthodontics, digital radiography, gum treatment, implant dentistry, sedation dentistry, and more. Innovative Solutions for Your Kitchen Challenges

ou may have a particular challenge in your kitchen related to storage, organization or access. Luckily, ShelfGenie has some organizational tips and solutions to help transform these frustrations into joy. Issue #1—Deep or Narrow pantry shelves: Deep or narrow pantries make it more difficult to see and access items you’re storing. Grouping items in like categories and keeping frequently used items up front can help. ShelfGenie Glide Out shelves can also help since they pull out the full depth of your pantry, making seeing and retrieving items easier Issue #2—High overhead cabinets: If you have a high cabinet that is hard to reach, consider putting in vertical dividers to use this space to store flat items such as baking sheets and trays. You can reach each

T

item at the bottom which makes access much easier. Issue #3—Blind corner cabinet: Some homeowners struggle with cabinets that extend back to a corner which makes full access nearly impossible. ShelfGenie has a solution that can increase usable storage space by up to 50 percent and brings items from the back of the cabinet to the cabinet door for more accessibility. Issue #4—Tricky space under the sink: The area under the sink is hard to reach and keep organized. A ShelfGenie under-sink Glide Out with a riser shelf is custom designed to your cabinet to avoid pipes, hoses and the garbage disposal so it maximizes your usable space- and increases access. Issue #5—Hard-to-reach spaces: For those with mobility issues, bending down to grab

pots and pans in lower cabinets can be a real struggle. To make accessing these items easier, ShelfGenie Designers suggest storing heavier items higher up on Glide Out shelves that pull out for easy retrieval. Issue #6—In-the-way trash cans: Keep your trash / recycling out of sight- but always within reach - with a Glide Out trash / recycling unit installed in a lower cabinet. The unit pulls out for easy access and can be attached to the cabinet door for an elegant, functional solution. To bring these solutions to your home and begin turning your frustration into joy, schedule a complimentary in-home consultation with a ShelfGenie Designer today. Smart Strategies Before You Retire I

f you’re looking forward to the day when you can permanently silence your morning alarm clock and pursue your own interests, you’re not alone. Perhaps your days will be filled with a hobby, golf, tennis, exotic travel, or just relaxing. Here are some suggestions to help

you to achieve that goal: » If you’re retiring before age 65, budget for the health insurance that will be required to fill the gap between the end of your employer’s plan and the beginning of Medicare. Shop for individual insurance policies, and make sure you understand the true cost of Medicare once it begins. » If you are married, create a Social Security claiming strategy that will allow you to maximize your benefits as a couple. At our firm we have proprietary software that can help you identify a strategy to maximize your

Social Security benefits. » Create an after-tax emergency fund so you don’t create taxable income by dipping into your 401(k) or IRA to pay for an unexpected home or auto repair. » Segregate your investments into time horizons. Conservatively invest a portion of assets for the first phase of your retirement years, and use a growth focus for phase two assets. A key to success is having a well-diversified portfolio that can withstand the market’s inevitable rollercoaster ride. » Have enough guaranteed income to cover your fixed living expenses. If you don’t have a company pension to combine with Social Security, you can create your own. The right pension annuity can pay you (and your spouse) lifetime income that keeps pace with inflation and provides a death benefit to your heirs if you pass early. » At age 72, Required Minimum Distributions (RMD) begin, creating additional taxable income for you. Prepare in advance and create a smart tax strategy for the years between retirement and age 72.

Your retirement can become the dream that you’ve worked and saved toward for so many years, and proper planning is the key to help you achieve those retirement dreams. Call me today and discover how together, we can help you secure your retirement by scheduling a oneon-one, no-cost consultation or introductory phone call today. Retirement dreams begin here. Meeting our neighbors at the Farmer’s Market

S

By Donna Navratil hepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church has been setting up at the weekly Farmer’s Market located at the Yacht Club in Tellico Village. Since we are the “little” church bookended by two larger churches we thought this would be a good way to make our presence in Tellico Village known, particularly to the many newcomers to our area. If you have never been to the Tellico Village Farmer’s Market, come by on Wednesday mornings from 9-noon. It’s a great way to shop and

meet your neighbors. Twice now I have sat at our church table giving out bottles of water on hot summer days and I have to tell you that it has been one of the most pleasant experiences. There is so much negativity in our world today, even in our own community, that it can put anyone in a miserable frame of mind. But not at the Farmer’s Market!! Everyone is smiling! Everyone is friendly! Animated conversation is everywhere! Everyone is enjoying the fresh air, the fresh produce, the home baked goods, and

the handicrafts! Kindness is everywhere! And all it entails is neighbors interacting with neighbors! “Shepherd of the Lake is here to quench your thirst!” That is the message we are espousing when we are at the Farmer’s Market as we offer free water to shoppers. We are chatting with our neighbors, telling of the growth of our church family, taking prayer requests and inviting the unchurched to join our little neighborhood where kindness and community is bountiful.

Now that the confining pandemic days are behind us and our church building/ expansion project is officially completed, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church would like to invite our friends and neighbors to tour our newly expanded facilities at 143 Chota Center. Watch for the date and time coming up soon - in the meantime, see you Wednesdays at the Farmer’s Market. Shepherd of the Lake 865-816-4756 www.shepherdofthelaketn.org

Good Shepherd Re-Opening Free Clothing Center August 9th

T

he Good Shepherd Center, Monroe County’s food pantry and service center, will re-open it’s free clothing center August 9th. While the Good Shepherd Center has remained open for food distribution during the past year, clients were not allowed inside the building to choose free clothing or meet with counselors because of Covid-19. Though the pandemic has caused an extra strain on everyone, the mission of the Center, to assist all of those in need in Monroe County, has continued to be fulfilled over the past year. Hours will remain the same: 9:00am to 12:15pm-Monday through Thursday at 5150 Hwy 411 South in Madisonville. There will still be some restrictions as to the number of people allowed inside at one time; however free summer clothing and other items will be available to all clients. The Good Shepherd Center provides three pieces of free clothing to each person in a family per month. To ensure the safety of everyone in the building: » All persons must wear masks while at the Center » Only one person from a family may choose clothing » Only six (6) people will be allowed in the building at any given time » All food distribution will be handled as is currently in place The Center utilizes air filtration systems throughout the building and has placed safety shields where appropriate. The Board of Directors encourages vaccination for all clients. Volunteers are needed at the Center to serve clients, distribute food items and clothing, help with building maintenance, pick up food and help with some administrative duties. To volunteer, call the Center at (423) 420-8888 during regular hours. Demand at the Center has increased with many new families needing assistance due to the Covid-19 crisis and related unemployment. Currently, the Center serves an average of 1,000 people per month and distributes approximately 40 boxes of food per day, or 30,000 pounds of food per month. “Our focus shifts between winter and summer needs, but the need for food distribution never changes,” said Margaret Cummings, president of the Board of Directors for the Center. Individuals and organizations can make a one-time donation or a pledge to the Good Shepherd Center monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation is appreciated, and contributions are tax deductible as the Center is a 501 (c) 3 organization.

ABOUT THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTER

~ Vacation ~

12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2021

V

acation is a word we all love to hear, especially those who are still in the work force. But how can a vacation by your provider impact your salon visits? At our salon, we encourage vacations by our teammates, and most often during the summer months someone is on vacation every single week. Now, while we all look forward to being on vacation, everyone who has ever worked in the salon business has come to dread the week

before and the week after their vacations. Seems as if we always try to squeeze as many of our guests into the weeks before and after vacation as possible, as time is a perishable asset and salon providers rarely get vacation pay. This ‘squeeze’ we referred to can cause a number of problems with both scheduling and quality control. Be advised that this time period before and after your providers vacation is usually not a good time to do a total makeover.

This vacation time crunch can also mean that you end up in another chair with another provider for your services. In the salons that enjoy a Brian K. Whitehead ‘team’ atmosphere, you Managing Partner should have little to fear The Village Salon regarding the outcome of your visit. Most likely, your regular operator has provided their teammates with your color formulas and haircut instructions in an effort to maintain the quality you have come to expect. There is however an unexpected twist that can happen in this situation. You may find that the fill-in/vacation provider does just a little better job than you are accustomed to. This happens every single time a vacation is taken by someone in the salon industry, and is simply one of the consequences that come from being absent from your post. It usually is a pretty good idea to keep in mind when your provider will be taking a vacation, and it will help to plan accordingly.

The Season of Transition F or those of you who are new to this gorgeous East Tennessee Valley, welcome to our distinct change of seasons, which may be part of why you’ve chosen to join us!! You’ll hear a sound when you’re outside in the late evening that’s very recognizable and familiar to those of you who were fortunate enough to be born here… the cicada or the “Katy-dids” as we East Tennesseans prefer to call them! It’s a sound that, to us, signals the ending of summer and the transitioning into autumn or “Indian Summer”. Just as the seasons change wonderfully four times a year, so do our wardrobes, leaving us no time to become bored either with the weather or our own closet. Of course, you’ll still want to enjoy many of your summer pieces as you begin the transition and with The Lily Pad’s selections, you’ll find cottons and linens are the perfect wardrobe extenders. Many of the fabrications available today are seasonless, especially in our area. We have no need, fortunately, for wool sweaters

and coats; only lightweight blends will be important. If you remember, last winter was extremely mild; not until after the holidays was there a need at all for a coat! You’ll begin to see a deepening of color hues, pastel pink will lead the way to dusty rose; lime green deepens to a shade of palm and sage; beige leads the way to copper and so it goes, transitioning our way into the warm days and cool evenings we associate with fall. It’s difficult to choose a favorite season, each being so perfect! The focus for fall will be strongly on a brown color palette; however, don’t worry – we’ll never be giving up black as THE staple in women’s apparel. Grey is coming on strong again, also, so you know whichever

color you choose there will be many color combinations for your skin tones and hair color. Browns are extremely striking on redheads, brunettes and blondes when used with the right accent pieces; grey works well with any skin tone when the right color is paired with it, nearer the face. Blacks, as we all know, just work! If you don’t have at least one great pair of black pants that are your staple in your wardrobe, please, let us help you as you select them. They are absolutely a must when you’re beginning to purchase for any season and we have many great styles to choose from. Remember our complimentary alterations as you choose your slacks for fall; a big plus, as many times a simple adjustment of the hemline makes a tremendous difference in the fit. Enjoy this time of the year! There’s a calming and slowing down of all of nature, a beautiful season to behold… and a valley that’s about to be painted with the colors of fall both in nature and in your wardrobe.

Elle’s photography showcases the unique artistry that can be found in window reflections. Although her images appear to be taken as a double exposure, each image is captured in a single shot that reflects a moment-intime. She encourages viewers to take a deeper look into her layered imagery, as hidden components are often waiting to be discovered.

Elle Colquitt, Fiber Vessels

Elle has been working as a professional textile artist since the early 1970’s. Currently, she is enjoying the challenge of designing fiber vessels. The wide variety of texture and pattern of her fabrics create designs that impersonate other materials; her work falls somewhere between quilting, basketry, pottery, and sculpture. Mudrooms Ensure a Good First Impression

A

s the saying goes, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” And it’s true. From interviewing for a job to a new relationship, first impressions are important. And first impressions include the feelings the entryway to your house makes on your guests and family members. If your entryway is cluttered, it can set a negative tone for the rest of the house. In fact, one of the most important areas of the house to keep neat is the entrance. If you always enter and exit through disorder, you’ll carry that clutter -- emotionally and physically -- into the rest of your home and out into the world. Having a clean entryway and garage will flow into the rest of your home and life. A custom built-in mudroom cabinet provides a go-to zone for family organization and efficiency. It is now a common feature in both new and renovated homes. The built-in should be tailored to your family’s specific needs, adding convenience and storage for everyday items. From places for shoes to sweaters, to umbrellas and the dog leash, everything has its place so you’re more organized and it’s a more welcoming experience for everyone. The key features to consider are:

Sitting Bench

You need a place to sit down to take your shoes on and off, or simply put down a bag of groceries. A bench should be approximately 17 inches high, which is standard chair height.

Individual Sections

Assign one section of the mudroom built-in to each member of the family. You’ll save a lot of valuable time getting out the door each morning.

Shoe Storage

Most of us have multiple pairs of footwear we wear at any given time of the year, so incorporating lots of shoe storage for each person is important.

TAILORED

TO THE WAY YOU LIVE

Lots of Hooks

Including sturdy hooks throughout the space provides a place to put almost everything, including heavy backpacks.

Style

A mudroom is a transitional space, so the built-in needs to be user friendly, as well as attractive and inviting. If your older home doesn’t have space inside for a built-in, consider putting it just outside the door in the garage. If your entryway or mudroom needs a complete overhaul or just some sprucing up, now is the perfect time for Tailored Living of Knoxville to provide custom design to maximize your space for functionality and a fabulous new look!

Today’s Window Treatments are Class Acts

By Darla Zorn – Owner/Founder – Express Blinds

C

alled on to perform a myriad of functions within our homes, window treatments are class acts to be sure. In fact, we view individual window treatments as actors on your home’s very own stage. Designed to complement each and every room in your home, well designed window treatments will accentuate your room’s décor, they provide just the right amount of personal privacy, they blend light from outside your home with light from within your home to strike a perfect balance, and they also provide energy efficiency and savings. With the pandemic in the rear view mirror, and friends and family visiting as before, perhaps it’s time to restage your home’s window treatments as you welcome new and more frequent guests into your home. With you as director, your home as the stage and your window treatments as actors, now is the time to create that showcase quality look that you’ve been dreaming of. LIGHTS! Last month we directed our lights to a different actor, the amazing and versatile honeycomb shade. In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we will introduce you to another exciting and equally rising star, the natural woven shade. Crafted from exotic organic fibers from jute to rattan and bamboo to wood, natural woven wood shades offer global texture to compliment our mist shrouded, rolling, Tennessee countrysides, mountains and pristine Lake Tellico shorelines. And these same fibers are designed to perfectly accentuate the décor within our homes as well. CAMERA! From harvest to fabrication, focus on up to 20 artisans handcrafting each shade. Meticulously hand-fed on a loom by skilled artisans using man-made yarns spun from natural by-products. Picture their enduring quality by examining the intricate details such as hand-sewn rings stitched right into the weave and handsome sewn-edge binding options that add a finished flair. Observe as the incomparably variegated textures and hues of naturally processed fibers, become the hallmark of each and every one of your natural woven shades

ACTION! Select your colors and fabrics. Choose from light-filtering grasses, reeds, papyrus, and bamboo woven by artisans which exhibit all the perfect imperfections. Revel in the rich hues that only nature can capture, offering an organic, sophisticated style. And be bold. Venture into an exotic twist by adding a pigmented stain option. Next, set the stage by selecting from a variety of motorized and cordless options to create the proper balance between beautiful form and beautiful function, and to ensure a safe and serene environment. And don’t forget those added touches of class, including top-down/bottom-up option, fixed liners and more. IT’S SHOWTIME! Ready to get YOUR SHOW on the road? Choosing the Right Refrigerator

2B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, August, 2021

Submitted by Pattersons Home Appliance Center

T

he refrigerator is arguably the most important appliance in your kitchen. When you choose a new refrigerator, it’s not just about function: Consider its features, style, and build. Your next refrigerator should last for years, and part of its longevity depends on how much you love it. Size Matters Before looking at new refrigerators, measure the space where it will be placed. Don’t measure your old fridge - refrigerator dimensions change over time. Modern refrigerators usually fit into a 36” wide and 72” tall opening. The only exception to that is the built-in refrigerator, which can be as wide as 48”. When measuring refrigerator depth, add an inch to your measurement to allow space for cords and water lines. Your refrigerator also needs at least half an inch of space on either side. Full Depth Vs. Counter Depth Counter-depth refrigerators and most built-ins are usually shallow enough to sit flush with your countertops.

This is helpful for smaller kitchens, or if you prefer a smooth transition between your counters and appliances. These refrigerators make up for lost depth by being a little taller and/or wider than average refrigerators. If you’re not worried about floor space, maximize your refrigerator’s internal storage with a full-depth refrigerator. There’s more room for chilled food and drinks, plus you’ll save money since full-depth refrigerators are usually less costly than counter-depth. Build Quality Build quality is often best graded by the features of the refrigerator. For instance, a fridge with automatic humidity controls for its crisper drawers would be higher quality than a refrigerator with non-humidity-controlled crisper drawers. An easy test for build quality is by checking the type of track that drawers run on. Higher quality refrigerators use metal tracks for a smoother glide, while lower quality refrigerator drawers run on plastic tracks. Refrigerator Style The most noticeable features of your refrigerator will be the color and style. Most refrigerators come in stainless steel,

but you can also find white, black, black stainless steel, and panel-ready refrigerators, which means you can add your own personal style to it. The style of your refrigerator depends on how convenient the style is to your lifestyle. For example, a french door refrigerator is perfect for someone who uses their refrigerator more than their freezer, while a side-byside refrigerator offers more freezer space in exchange for a slimmer fridge space. If you prefer a single-door refrigerator, you can

still choose between a top mount or bottom mount freezer. Refrigerator features to consider include an interior water dispenser, in-door-ice system, sophisticated temperature and humidity controls, slide-away shelves, and can caddies or wine racks. Proven Protection From Nature’s Most Destructive Force!

I

By Tom Irmen

t is estimated that lightning strikes occur 25 million times a year in North America resulting in $5 billion in property damage. Do you think that lightning can’t strike your home? What are the odds? Think again. In just the last several months, lighting has struck two homes in Rarity Bay. One home was a total loss. The other home, which was under construction, sustained fire damage. Fortunately there were no injuries or fatalities. The solution is easier than you might imagine. Acting on the recommendation of a neighbor whose home was next door to one of the two lightning strikes I mentioned earlier, I contacted William Burden at WB Lightning Rods at (321) 217-3438. This three generation old, family owned business, has been in business since 1950. Rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and a National Fire Protection Association member, WB Lightning Rods installed air terminals (rods) on our roof which were connected to down connectors (cables) which in turn where connected to copper grounding rods. So just how does this system work? It’s quite simple actually. The system provides a pathway for lightning to be safely dissipated to the system’s grounding rods. Installed in about 4 hours, this system will provide you with the peace of mind you deserve. This lightning protection system is an inexpensive alternative to the loss of a home, personal possessions, injuries or worse. To learn more call William Burden at WB Lightning Rods at (321) 217-3438 today.

It Might Be Your Water…

By david Brewster, Owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

have heard pinhole leaks are a huge pain. Not from personal experience, but from the clients I have worked with. Stories of

massive floods, ripping out drywall, hidden mold growing behind the wall, and $10k-20k re-plumbing jobs having to be done. And the

sad part is most people think it’s just their old plumbing, and there is no alternative but to invest in totally gutting the plumbing. Luckily,

we have saved many clients from turning their home into a job site by fixing the water that travels through those old pipes. Chlorine is corrosive to copper. It reacts with the copper to create a chemical compound: Copper chloride. This compound slowly but surely corrodes copper from the inside, which results in those tiny but destructive pinhole leaks. Also, hard water (an abundance of calcium/magnesium) can create pitting in the copper. Our systems remove the chlorine, chloramines, and hardness that destroy old copper pipes. We also add a special filter between the system and copper pipes to recoat the lines from decades of damage. After installing hundreds of these to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that it works. We’ve been saving our valued clients from $10k-20k re-plumbing jobs and from turning their home into a job site. And not only did they save their plumbing, but they also get all the other benefits of installing a whole house water filtration system. We are so confident that we have a turn-key pinhole leak prevention system that we will refund your investment if, for some reason, it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Call or text 865-213-1139 to schedule your free pinhole leak assessment and get your questions answered.

The Easy Way to Buy and Sell Your Items By Aaron Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

or years, individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not anymore. In more recent times, Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Nextdoor, OfferUp, and similar sites have been used. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell household items by themselves. In fact, those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the time and effort? Do you really want to invite strangers to your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying no-shows? We launched Premiere Consignment nine years ago with the goal of helping our neighbors sell their gently used, name-brand furniture, art pieces, home décor items, and Oriental rugs without all of the hassle asso-

ciated with attempting to sell their unused household items themselves. We offer our consigners a complete turnkey experience, which greatly enhances their potential to sell their items at the best possible prices for both the buyer and seller. Our retail showroom location and convenient hours, in addition to our print and online advertising, ensures that your items will be seen by even more qualified buyers. Premiere Consignment handles the entire transaction from beginning to end! No sitting at home waiting for strangers to arrive or wondering if their check is good. We also offer you the opportunity to market many of your personal items online using our very own and very successful eBay store. So forget the ad in the local paper or on Craigslist, put away the yard sale signs, and discover the safe, easy, and most convenient way to sell your gently used furniture, décor, art, and Oriental rugs – the no-hassle, Premiere Consignment way. 10 years!

A Place to Gather If you're like me, you're eagerly anticipating being together with your friends and loved ones this holiday season. After spending so long apart, this season will feel even more special than before. Adding a few fresh touches before your guests arrive - start now. Often times you can completely revitalize the look of a space with a few small touches. Here's a few ideas to consider: custom window treatments, fresh wall art, a larger rug, wallpaper or a new coat of paint, accessories, or a new seating area.

he 2021 boating season is now fully underway and so is a new season of endless boat detailing, unless of course you own a Touchless Boat Cover System from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by the Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. So we installed a new Touchless Boat Cover System last summer, redirecting a portion of the money we saved from a canceled 2020 Mediterranean cruise. Well the proof as they say is in the pudding. When we opened up our boat for the beginning of the 2021 boating season, we were pleasantly surprised. And although we had considered using our old boat cover as added protection, we avoided the temptation. We simply pressed our Touckless key fob and our boat, which was detailed last summer, appeared, looking showroom new. No bird droppings and no spiders.

Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC.

Or maybe it's more the function of your spaces you're wanting to change, like additional seating. Benches are a great way to incorporate more seats at a dining table, and ottomans are great flexible seating options in a room and can double as storage. Do you have too much glare on your television or computer? We can make it go away with properly fitting shades and window treatments.

Your home will be the perfect backdrop for all of your new memories together. Call us today and we'll help your home become your favorite place to gather.

In the Garden by

Lisa Grugin

e are now officially in the “Dog Days.” Did you ever wonder where that term came from? It doesn’t have anything to do with our pets! In ancient Greece and Rome, the Dog Days were believed to be “a time of drought, bad luck, and unrest, when dogs and men alike would be driven mad by the extreme heat.” I got that from The Farmers Almanac. Now we use the term mostly about the time of summer’s peak temperatures and humidity. That was a long and meandering way of saying it is pretty miserable outside. It is hard to make yourself go out and water or weed or deadhead when the air is swampy and the mosquitoes are trying to suck out every drop of your blood. I’m sorry, but your plants need help. The rain has been erratic, fungus is everywhere, and insects have arrived en masse. If you don’t help your plants get through this stage, be prepared to replace them this fall. Here are the things you need to do: » Monitor your yard. Do a walk around at least once a week to see what is going on. It is much easier to treat problems when you catch them early. This is also a great time to evaluate what has happened in your yard this year so far. What has done well? What hasn’t? What needs to be moved, removed, cut back, fertilized, treated, or composted? Do you need to add or subtract? It may be too hot for the actual work, but you can dream! » Can you plant? Yep. It just requires a little more effort. We still have plenty of beautiful annuals, perennials, trees, and shrubs. Pull up ugly annuals and replace them with fresh color. Add perennials to sunny or shady locations. Trees and shrubs can also be planted but will take a little more care. That means you will have to water the daylights out of them. » Since I mentioned water, let’s talk about that. You may believe you are getting plenty of rain, but sometimes it isn’t as much as you think. If you don’t have a

WE CAN HELP YOU GET THROUGH THE

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER WITH FRESH PLANTS AND IDEAS.

PLAN FOR A BEAUTIFUL FALL! rain gauge, you can use plants (like hydrangeas, forsythia, weigela) that droop when they are thirsty to tell you when things are dry. By the time hollies, azaleas, and other evergreens tell you they are dry, it is usually too late. Please remember sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but are NOT adequate for trees and shrubs. Those need a drip system or hand watering. » Powdery mildew, rust, black spot, and shothole disease are making an appearance everywhere. Your first round of defense is removing infected leaves and making sure they do not remain on the ground. Pruning (carefully) to improve air circulation will help with airborne diseases, and spraying with a fungicide will kill fungal spores. I am also seeing many plants succumbing to root rot. Root diseases are much harder to treat, and it usually involves removing mulch and applying a systemic product. Call us, stop by, email us, or contact us on Facebook if you have questions. » Check for bugs, but make sure you have bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is causing two serious problems: The “bad” bugs are becoming resistant to the chemicals, and “good” bugs like bees are getting wiped out. Don’t add to the problem.

9885 Highway 11E, Lenoir City, TN 37772 www.meadowviewgreenhouse.com • 865-986-7229 » Summer is not the time to do major pruning of shrubs and trees. It is simply too stressful. As I mentioned above, you can take off wonky or diseased branches and do some minor shaping, but save the bigger jobs until the plants are dormant. If someone is doing surgery on you, wouldn’t you rather be asleep? » Cut back perennials and annuals that have gotten leggy. Many will have new growth at the base, so be careful not to cut that off. » Keep deadheading those annuals! Some of them could use a haircut and a good shot of fertilizer. Many will perk back up as the temperatures cool, so don’t give up. One the other hand, don’t be afraid to compost them and replace them with new plants. » Did you plant vegetables? How did they do? If you didn’t enjoy the success you had hoped for, come in and talk to us and let’s see if we can figure out what went wrong. Sometimes the solution is

very simple, like plant rotation or installing drip irrigation. If you have an overabundance, consider donating some to a food pantry. » Isn’t it amazing how fast the weeds can take over? Keep pulling and spraying them, and don’t forget to apply a pre-emergent. There are some really nasty plants like Smilax (an awful, thorny vine that can have roots 20 feet long) that are really difficult to eradicate, so don’t give up! » The fall bird migration will start soon. Keep your bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full so visiting birds can have an Airbnb at your house! Our fall merchandise has started arriving, so stop in and see what is new! GARAGES

A Valuable Part of Your House

G

one are the days of a dirty, oil-stained and cracked garage floor. Today’s garage floor coatings leave the garage looking like a showroom. Garage floors have a hard life. They are subject to constant pressure from the car and hot tires as you drive over them, as well as temperature extremes and abuse from oil drips and substances brought in on your tires. As a result, the concrete often ends up cracking and crumbling. There are a few flooring options to protect your concrete, however not all floor coatings are created equal. The decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and installed by PremierGarage. “There have been many improvements in coating technology over the past 20 years and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” explained Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” Polyurea flooring systems present the most-advanced, fast-curing and hardening system in concrete flooring technology. It withstands more abuse and impact than any traditional epoxy coating. It also provides better protection against harmful agents like oils, chemicals, and gas, and it doesn’t stain, crack, or peel. PremierGarage’s polyurea floor coating will look new for years to come. While do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely avail-

able and easy to work with, the down side is many things can go wrong when applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface and peel it away from the concrete. For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarage technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating over epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage!. PremierGarage® 865-947-8686 www.tailoredlivingknoxville.com

recent article in BoatUS describes how two young friends, boys ages 10 and 11, drowned in Cherokee Lake. Sadly they died from Electric Shock Drowning or ESD. Knoxville’s Best Oriental Rug Washing Boutique Just Got Better T

By Kerry McDuffie – Owner – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

oday, thanks to enhanced cleaning technologies and new and improved synthetic carpet fibers, we are able to clean your home’s wall-to-wall carpeting and Oriental rugs more effectively and efficiently then ever before. But the technologies used to clean carpeting and to wash Oriental rugs are as different as night and day. While carpeting is manufactured primarily from synthetic fibers, their cousins, the Oriental rugs, continue to be hand-crafted using the same all-natural materials that have been used for centuries. Their wool and cotton construction and natural dyes, while durable, make them susceptible to permanent damage if washed improperly. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have pioneered a proprietary 11-step Oriental rug washing system that is the result of my more than 35 years of carpet and rug washing experience. Our system not only thoroughly washes your Oriental rugs, but it also protects them from the damage that can result from improper handling and cleaning by inexperienced tradesmen. We’re proud of our proprietary Oriental rug washing system and even more proud of our most recent investments in the latest advances in Oriental rug washing technology that makes Knoxville’s best Oriental rug washing boutique even better. We recently installed the new Marinator Decon System that allows us to circulate up to 80 gallons of solution per minute throughout your entire rug, leaving your rug cleaner than ever before. We have also installed the all new Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor that allows us to thoroughly rinse your rugs using pure, 100% treated water, and not recycled water. Think of it as a shower rather than a bath. Our nearly 4 decades of delivering a Superior level of customer service, and our continued investments in new state-of-the-art technologies, underscore our commitment to you to remain the very best Oriental rug washing service in East Tennessee. Pets For Patriots M

any of the dogs and cats at the Monroe County Animal Shelter are qualified as “Pets for Patriots (PFP)” adoptables. Our shelter was the first in Tennessee to partner with PFP. Anderson is a qualified cat and so are dogs Duke, Admiral and Dan! Come to the shelter to meet any of these great companion candidates! If you are a veteran, please check for your qualifications and apply, and then re-contact the shelter once approved. There is no adoption fee for Pets for Patriots animals and there are a lot of benefits. Check their website at https://www.petsforpatriots.org/ adopt-a-pet/veteran-benefits/ and veterans who adopt through Pets for Patriots receive a range of benefits to reduce the lifetime costs of having a pet and to nurture the person-pet bond. Animals adopted through the program are for companionship and emotional support only. They are not service animals nor are they suitable

for service training. Anderson is a handsome 3-year-old male orange tabby. Anderson loves to be stroked and gently rubbed. This handsome boy is a quiet, observant kitty and would make an excellent outdoor cat for someone who has plenty of space for him to roam. Give him the option and he may choose to be an indoor cat! Admiral is a 2-year-old, 57lb, Pit mix with a unique bi-color face. This handsome boy is high energy with a goofy, fun personality ready to bring a smile to all. He loves to play ball for as long as someone is willing to play with him. Because of his youthful, high energy level, it is recommended that he go to a home with a fenced play yard. Duke is a 54 pound, 3-year old mixed breed. This handsome boy has a calm, friendly personality and loves human attention. He already has some great “plus” factors for his forever family: he is housebro-

ken, leash trained, and knows basic commands like “sit” and “paw”. He also offers great entertainment with his goofy antics while playing with stuffed toys. NO cats. Dan is a 10-year-old 47 lb. Treeing Walker Coonhound mix. This handsome elderly fellow is looking for a nice retirement home with a fenced yard. With his hound heritage, a home with small children or small animals would not be recommended. Enhance the Heart of Your Home

ake no mistake about it; your kitchen is the heart of your home. It’s your family’s gathering place. It’s where you enjoy your first cup of coffee in the morning while casually surveying another spectacular East Tennessee sunrise. It’s where you endeavor as a budding gourmet to perfect that new recipe that will delight family and guests. It’s where you celebrated your most recent anniversary and the news that you were about to become a grandmother. And it’s where family members continue to delight in our annual Christmas cookie assembly line, which we first experienced with our children, and now with our grandchildren. It’s a place where family memories are created that will be treasured for many generations to come. In my over 30 years of experience as a residential home builder and remodeler, I’ve discovered that few areas within our homes generate more enthusiasm on the part of the homeowner then planning their kitchen. Having worked closely with hundreds of families just like yours to create homes and kitchens that reflect their personal tastes and individuality, I anxiously await the opportunity to help you and your family to create your very own showcase quality kitchen. Kitchens are far more than a collection of cabinets, countertops and appliances. A showcase quality kitchen begins with a well conceived plan. Ijams Nature Center’s Symphony in the Park Rebrands to Twilight at Ijams

I

jams Nature Center’s most important annual fundraiser is getting an update, and with it comes a new name: Twilight at Ijams. The 2021 Twilight at Ijams, presented by Clayton and Colonial Pipeline Company, will take place Sunday, Sept.12, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets are now available. Formerly Ijams Nature Center’s Symphony in the Park, the new name reflects the continuing focus of this beloved event: To raise awareness and funds for the nature center so that Ijams can continue to educate and inspire people of all ages to appreciate and care for the natural world. “We’ve known we needed to change the name because, while Ijams Nature Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, many in the community are under the impression that it is a City of Knoxville park and is fully funded by the City,” Ijams Executive Director Amber Parker said. “Additionally, we continue to hear many in the community as well as some attendees believe the event is supporting the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, not Ijams Nature Center. “Being transparent with donors and honoring their intent are incredibly important for Ijams. Realizing that people

Before

might be purchasing tickets from Ijams and thinking they were supporting the KSO with their funds was troubling. It was time to rebrand the event to create clarity.” The original event was created as a fundraiser for the nature center 36 years ago by Sherri Lee, the late Bill Miller, M.D., and other members of the Ijams Board of Directors. “My goal was to raise new friends and funds for Ijams. I wanted a unique event that would appeal to a large number of people,” Ijams Board of Directors Emeritus Member Sherri Lee said. “Sitting on picnic blankets and enjoying symphonic music under the stars seemed magical. It has been an incredible evening and the KSO has been creative, imaginative, fanciful, lyrical and fun.” The event has grown and changed over the years, including moving from picnic blankets to tables, adding guest musical artists and introducing a featured visual artist. The pandemic forced another change in 2020: Ijams planned a virtual experience, and, due to another rainy forecast, held the event – Ijams Nature Center’s Symphony from the Park – inside the Emporium Building. That evening featured three new performers after the KSO was unable to play.

The overwhelmingly positive reaction to the music in 2020 – a blend of bluegrass, classical and Appalachian – brought the realization that Ijams could create space for new artists and rotate performers from musical genres to expand the reach and diversity of the event. While still including the KSO in the rotation, it would be a way to increase relevancy with new audiences while also honoring the past. Both the name and programmatic changes were approved by the Ijams Board of Directors and received the blessing of the event’s co-presenting sponsors. Carl Hill, Vice President of Marketing for Clayton Homes, is enthusiastic about the change. “This event has always been special, but rebranding and focusing the spotlight on Ijams Nature Center’s story will make it even more so,” Hill said. “Ijams has been and continues to be an important part of this community. Clayton is proud to return as a presenting sponsor of Twilight at Ijams.” “The KSO has been a wonderful partner and has done an amazing job,” Parker said. “In addition to being featured cyclically for Twilight at Ijams, I look forward to finding new ways we can work together.

“This year’s musical performance will be created by classically trained pianist and WUOT ‘Afternoon Concert’ host Melony Dodson, who has music-directed a host of local theatre productions and has numerous connections in the region. The program will feature nature-themed music, including Broadway, classical, Appalachian and other genres. It will illustrate a day at Ijams from dawn’s first light to twilight. I’m excited about the program and the opportunities it will provide.”

An Enlightening Conversation with Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson

A

By Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

nyone in the mid-70s that actively listened to popular radio heard the band Jethro Tull, who commanded a lot of the radio airwaves. Even today, our ears perk up when we hear their songs such as “Bungle in the Jungle,” “Aqualung,” “Locomotive Breath,” and “Living in the Past.” The band was founded in 1967 and led by Ian Anderson, who handled its vocals, some guitar, and flute. Under his leadership, the band has remained active and relevant despite many personnel changes. That activity has produced 21 studio albums, 11 live albums, and 17 compilation albums. Until the pandemic hit, Anderson had kept Jethro Tull’s catalog of music alive and well, often touring to the delight of the band’s loyal fans. Sharing how he has weathered the lockdown in his home in England, Ian indicated that he has been helping others with their recordings - collaborating with a wide range of artists and groups and even playing some instruments that he hadn’t picked up in years. While Ian has been working on a new album, and that was the primary reason I reached out to contact him, he wasn’t ready to discuss the album yet as it won’t be released until next year. He did, however, spend close to an hour on a Zoom call with me to discuss Covid, music, political diplomacy, and the future. Already known as a highly intelligent person with a broad range of interests, Ian also showed himself to be a gracious interviewee. It was a thrill and honor to speak with him, and I was again reminded of the incredible breadth and depth of his subject matter. When asked how he had filled his extended time at home, Ian lamented on having spent a large amount of time on “housekeeping stuff - a lot of it involves planning tours that don’t happen and then having to cancel them or move them when they don’t. That actually does take up and waste a huge amount of time.” But he also explained that “in more creative terms, last year we released the Jethro Tull book, ‘The Ballad of Jethro Tull,’ which took quite a lot of my time intermittently through 2019 and into 2020.” Knowing that Ian had been influenced by American blues artists, I asked if there would ever be a blues-oriented album from Jethro Tull. “The only time I’ve done really anything that you might call was essentially blues would be when, on rare occasions, I’ve got up with somebody to do something and that

is the genre in which they perform,” said Ian. “But no, I made a decision back in end of 1968 to not in any way be what I consider frivolous and maybe potentially disrespectful to a genre of music that was so important to me when I was growing up as a teenager. As a middle-class white boy, I don’t believe I own the credentials to sing music that is Black American folk music.” Years ago, I happened upon a newscast wherein it showed Ian chatting with the show’s host, Tony Snow (former press Secretary to President George W. Bush). In the piece, it became clear that Ian and Tony - two men with opposing political views - had a mutual respect and admiration for each other. They also shared a mutual talent for the flute. Tony succumbed to colon cancer in 2008. Ian eulogizes his dear friend on his website. I asked him for his comments about Tony and his advice as to how people can disagree agreeably in today’s political climate. “It’s about listening to what other people have to say,”

said Ian. “And if you disagree with it, then you choose your words with some diplomacy as to how you make a counter argument. Tony Snow was a Southern gentleman, a lifelong conservative and deeply wedded to the Republican ideology. But he could see things from both sides, and he had - you had to have if you were the press secretary for George W. Bush - you had to have diplomacy and tact and political skills if you are going to survive a White House press conference.” Closing his thoughts about Tony, Ian concluded: “You know, we’ve lost someone who was a very intelligent, very bright, very experienced, very learned person known primarily within the media, and as a speech writer for Bush, junior and senior. I think he had political skills. And, above all, he had political charm to go with that native intelligence.” As we wrapped up our chat, Ian shared his outlook for the future. “It’s nice to be busy. It’s nice to have something to look forward to in terms of some challenges. Right now, I suppose the thing that hurts the most is just not being able to jump on a train or a plane and step out onto a stage in front of an audience. Now you’re my age, you do necessarily have time running out. Hopefully we get to see it happen quite soon. It might never happen at all. I try to be optimistic and try to keep hopeful. We’ll see how it pans out in the weeks and months to come.” The chat with Ian was quite extensive and covered topics from his views on politics in the U.S. to his experiences within the music business and can be viewed in its entirety at www.Boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirtysix years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.
