Say Goodbye to Assembly Line Medicine Volume 20, No. 9, Section A

FREE

SCOTT GALLIAN, MD, MBA, and U.S. Air Force veteran, co-owner of Gallian Medical Group in nearby Hardin Valley, offers his patients a level compassionate caring, full-service primary care that you might have thought no longer existed today. Dr. Gallian is shown standing in the soon-to-be completed expansion of their medical facility.

Y

ou may have to take a number and stand in line at the Department of Motor Vehicles, but you don’t have to settle for the assembly line-like experience growing so common nowadays. Advances in medical science in the United States have dramatically enhanced life expectancies from 54.1 years in 1918 to 78.9 years in 2020. However, these revolutionary advances in medicine have come at an enormous financial and personal cost to patients as many rural hospitals are forced to close their doors and urban hospitals and medical centers are forced to consolidate or face going out of business. Today only one-third of physicians are still in private practice, and it is estimated that only 50% of our current health system will remain in place during the next decade. If you’re the type of individual who truly values your relationships with your medical providers once so prevalent in the healthcare community, it’s easy to appreciate your concern for the future as medical care becomes increasingly driven by bottom lines - often at the expense of you, the patient. Fortunately, a growing number of private practice medical providers are pushing back against these managed care, socialized medical models so common in

Europe and elsewhere today. Launched in 2016 by husband and wife team, Scott Gallian, MD, MBA, and U.S. Air Force veteran, and Lauren Gallian, FNP-BC, Gallian Medical Group in nearby Hardin Valley offers a fresh and totally new approach to providing caring and compassionate, full-service primary care to their patients, unlike the socialized medicine trends that so much of our healthcare system has embarked on. Complete with in-house diagnostic lab, EKG, and X-ray services, Gallian Medical Group offers their patients a level of medical excellence that’s becoming increasingly more difficult to find today. What patients appreciate the most about Gallian Medical Group is a level of compassionate caring that they remember from their past. Gone are the “bus station-like” waiting room experiences and “steeple chase-like” visits with your healthcare provider. What remains is a team of dedicated medical professionals who are totally committed to your individual healthcare needs in a caring, compassionate, and unrushed environment. We trust that you are going to enjoy this month’s issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views and our interview with Scott Gallian, MD, and Family Nurse Practitioner, Lauren Gallian, FNC-BC, and the newest member of the Gallian healthcare team, Family Nurse Practitioner, Gina Bearden, FNC-BC. We believe that at Gallian Medical Group, you will rediscover an entirely new level of personalized healthcare that you might have thought no longer existed. MV: You have all experienced today’s socialized medical trends firsthand as

providers. Describe your experiences and how they helped you to envision a new future for your patients at Gallian Medical Group. Scott: In the outpatient setting, we felt as if our employers were dictating the level of care and not the patient in consultation with their physician. At Gallian Medical Group, we put the focus back on the patient and provide them with the time needed to fully describe their symptoms and to treat them. We don’t lock our patients into 15 minute blocks of time. MV: How have your patients responded to the level of care they receive at Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: They thoroughly enjoy it. They don’t like being rushed or ignored. I think most of our new patients are surprised at our more measured approach to healthcare. Accustomed as they are to the assembly line medical treatments they experience elsewhere, they are often surprised to discover that we take the time to really listen to them. They genuinely appreciate the fact that we desire to have a meaningful provider/patient relationship with them. Patients who wish to be more proactive in achieving their optimum level of health really enjoy their new provider/ patient relationships. MV: I guess another indication of your success is the fact that your are currently expanding your medical facility to meet the needs of your growing group of patients. Tell us about your expansion plans. Scott: We’re grateful to our growing number of new patients, for their trust in us and their support and encouragement. To meet this growing patient base and the additional providers, we are currently

expanding our medical facility. We are adding 1,500 additional square feet of exam rooms, provider offices, and nurse work centers. Our new addition is scheduled to be complete in October. MV: Gina, as the newest addition to the Gallian Medical Group healthcare team, tell our readers a little bit about yourself. Gina: My family moved to Tennessee from Michigan when I was eight. I attended nursing school at Tennessee State University and earned my master’s degree from Vanderbilt University. I have worked as an ICU nurse and have 20 years of experience as a Nurse Practitioner, with a decade of that practicing in Endocrinology. MV: What most influenced your decision to join the Gallian Medical Group team? Gina: Like the entire team at Gallian, I practice evidence-based medicine and feel passionate about treating the patient as a whole - truly listening to them and getting to the root of their problem. Like my fellow team members, I am extremely thorough and detailed in my management and want the patient to feel comfortable and confident in their care, but, most importantly, I want to show compassion to each patient. I look forward to making a valuable contribution to Gallian Medical Group and their family of patients throughout our East Tennessee community. MV: What services do you provide at Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: We provide evidence-based primary care for patients age 12 and up. We have our own lab and X-ray machine. We also perform EKGs and spirometry services. We offer preventative care and Continued on page 2A ...

immunizations, chronic disease management, hypertension management, nutrition and wellness management, diabetes management, physicals, and a variety of other services. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm. Same-day appointments are available. We also offer Telemedicine for your convenience. MV: Because you’re a private practice medical practice facility, in what other ways do your patients benefit? Scott: Choice is clearly an important way in which our patients benefit. If they need a service we can’t provide, then they are free to go wherever they like. They can choose any specialist, any hospital, any other ancillary service they want - not just the ones under a certain corporate umbrella. Patients also want a provider they can stay with for life, not someone that will move on after the provider’s contract expires or if the corporate employer makes decisions affecting the doctor-patient relationship. Patients want their provider, not a replacement or substitute. We plan on being here for many years to come. MV: Unlike other area healthcare providers that experience high staff turnover, your team has been with you for a number of years. How important is this to your patients? Lauren: Extremely important. Our staff

Photos by D. Roberts Photography

is a big reason for our success. We feel the patient’s relationship with our staff is as important as the patient’s relationship with us. Our staff is like family to us. MV: What is a typical patient wait time? Lauren: Most of the time less than 15 minutes. Rarely more than 30 minutes. MV: You appear to attract a great many Medicare patients. Why is that? Scott: Medicare patients are a special population. They generally have more healthcare needs and have higher expectations than other groups of patients. They usually are more in tune with their health than a younger person and more

self-educated about their health. We want them to know we’re here to meet their expectations and provide the quality care they deserve in order to achieve their optimal level of health and well-being. MV: What other types of insurance do you accept? Scott: Almost all commercial insurances, Medicare, and Medicare Advantage plans. We don’t discriminate based on a patient’s insurance status. MV: How can people learn more about Gallian Medical Group? Lauren: Our website is www. gallianmedical.com. We also encourage

people to visit our Facebook page. MV: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Scott: We want your readers to know that we will go the extra mile to ensure they have a truly wonderful healthcare experience, the type of experience they might have thought no longer existed in today’s steeple-chase medical marketplace. very community has special places that are unique and draw visitors in from other areas. One of those special places in the Athens Community is Camp Living Stones. Camp Living Stones is a Christian outdoor recreation adventure youth camp located near the beautiful Cherokee National Forest at the foot of Starr Mountain. During the summer, the camp staff offers one week, gospelcentered, fully programmed experiences that are designed to challenge students in grades 6-12 in a relationally intentional, group-oriented environment to know and follow hard after Jesus Christ. In addition, year-round retreat services are offered. Since the camp is located in the mountains of the beautiful Cherokee National Forest, outdoor recreation and team building come naturally. The camp facilitates activities such as a climbing wall, rappelling, zip lines, high ropes, low ropes, mud pit challenge, archery and tomahawk throwing, horseback riding, sand volleyball, Gaga ball, and white-water rafting on the Ocoee River. T

September Highlights

his September brings a few things to mind such as cooler temperatures, colorful foliage, and usually fall festivals. But the pandemic has changed the activities that we have come to enjoy during the fall season. Many events have been canceled or postponed, but one attraction we still can enjoy this fall is the Smoky Mountains. They are especially striking during autumn, which is why visitors have traveled to our area to enjoy our special corner of Tennessee. And if you want to enjoy the Smoky Mountain atmosphere, then consider renting a cabin in the Smokies with breathtaking views. Read the article on page 14A and imagine cool mountain breezes while enjoying the awe-inspiring views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Health and safety are a priority these days as we all navigate through the pandemic, and our feature article on the cover of Section A focuses on Gallian Medical Group, a medical facility in Hardin Valley. Dr. Scott Gallian and his team provide a level of compassionate care that many of us remember from our past such as a caring unrushed environment. Their facility is expanding, so if you are looking for a healthcare experience that you thought no longer existed, then contact Gallian Medical Group. Labor Day is celebrated in September and it signals symbolically the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make to the strength and prosperity of our country and vital to our economy’s recovery. So celebrate and appreciate the American worker.

Finally I would be remiss if I did not mention a September day in our history – September 11th. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views will always remember those that were lost on that fateful day and those that suffered losses. Let’s not forget this now historic day that changed everything. So enjoy September and the coming of the fall season. It’s a great time to be in Tennessee!

Do You Have Pinhole Leaks? It Might Be Your Water…

I

By David Brewster, Owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

have heard pinhole leaks are a huge pain. Not from personal experience, but from the clients I have worked with. Stories of massive floods, ripping out drywall, hidden mold growing behind the wall, and 10k-20k re-plumbing jobs having to be done. And the sad part is most people think it’s just their old plumbing, and there is no alternative but to invest in totally gutting the plumbing. Luckily, we have saved many clients from turning their home into a job site by fixing the water that travels through those old pipes. Chlorine is corrosive to copper. It reacts with the copper to create a chemical compound: Copper chloride. This compound can slowly attack copper from the inside, which results in those tiny but destructive pinhole leaks. Also, hard water, an abundance of calcium/magnesium,

can erode copper pipes if a hot water recirculation pump is installed. Kinetico water systems remove the chlorine, chloramines, and hardness that can attack copper pipes. We also add a special coating filter, after the Kinetico system, to

recoat the copper plumbing from the years of damage. After installing hundreds of Kinetico Systems to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that it works. We’ve been saving our valued clients from 10k-20k re-plumbing jobs and from turning their home into a job site. And not only did they save their plumbing, but they also get all the other benefits of installing a Kinetico whole house water filtration system. We are so confident that we have a turn-key pinhole leak prevention system that we will refund your investment if it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Call or text 865-986-4234 to schedule your free pinhole leak assessment, and get your questions answered. Aqua Clear Water Systems 865-986-4234 www.aquaclearws.com

progression of the Woman Suffrage Movement and highlights East Tennessee contributions including those made by Lizzie Crozier French, Cora E. Burke, and Eliza Shaut White. The Streetscape with its recreation of a 1920s East Tennessee Main Street serves as the backdrop for visitors who are immersed in the drama of the Woman Suffrage Movement. Life-size mannequins dressed as suffragists hoist reproduction campaign signs, as interpretive panels recount the unique stories of how individuals affected change. The “march to victory” culminates in the display of the letter State Representative Harry T. Burn received from his mother, Febb E. Burn, encouraging him to vote in support of woman suffrage. This letter persuaded Harry Burn to change his vote, breaking a deadlocked state legislature, and ultimately changed history by making the ratification of the 19th Amendment possible. The letter is on loan from Knox County Public Library’s Calvin M. McClung Historical Collection. While visiting the museum, guests can also explore Black & White., Knoxville in the Jim Crow Era, which features the stories of African American artists Beauford

Delaney, Joseph Delaney, and Ruth Cobb Brice, with contributions by guest historian Robert J. Booker. The exhibition, which opened in February, has now been extended to provide visitors’ access to this important part of East Tennessee’s past.

he Rose Center Board of Directors announces the cancellation of this year’s Mountain Makins Festival due to the current COVID-19 health crisis. “After much discussion, we reached the conclusion that we simply couldn’t keep our festival volunteers, visitors, artists, and other participants safe,” said Kaye Schwalb, Board Chair. This would have been the 45th annual festival, Rose Center’s original, and still its largest fundraiser. During the past 44 years, more than 1,000 crafts makers from several states, and hundreds of musicians and dancers, have participated in the fall event. The award-winning festival draws visitors from around the Southeast. “The cancellation is not only a significant loss for Rose Center, but also for the makers and other vendors who depend on festivals and events for their livelihood,” said Beccy Hamm, Executive Director. “We are looking for ways to promote these artists to help make up for their loss.” Rose Center gratefully acknowledges the special COVID-19 relief grants it has received from the Tennessee Arts Commission, Humanities Tennessee, and the East Tennessee Foundation. Rose Center, located at 442 W 2nd North Street in Morristown, is currently open by appointment. Information on rentals, classes, programs, and events is available at www. rosecenter.org. Staff may be contacted at 423-581-4330.

ow that we are well into our third month of operations since the reopening of close contact businesses, signs point to a light at the end of the proverbial tunnel. While close contact businesses are operating under conditions that are far from “normal,” things are at least starting to feel a little more normal. Salons had a heavy demand for hair and nail services immediately after our reopening date, and now we are seeing a surge in the demand for skin care services. The Village Salon proudly continues its long-time partnership with Gallaher Spa M.D. to provide quality skin care services to our guests. Gallaher Spa M.D. is currently offering its full list of skin care services, along with non-surgical procedures, and is safely performing them both. Providers at Gallaher

are outfitted with both cloth facial coverings and clear plastic face shields in an effort to provide safe close contact facial services. Most of us have now become accustomed to screening questions, temperature scans, and facial coverings as a part of the temporary “new normal.” As is true in many cases, close Brian K. Whitehead contact businesses are likely “cleaner” now than at any other Managing Partner time because of the extra sanitizing work that must be done. The Village Salon So as your comfort level increases and you find yourself ready to resume your skin care or injectable maintenance, call your The Village Salon 222 Village Square local skin care provider and in Tellico Village book your next appointment. 865-458-9332 Hopefully the light at the thevillagesalon@aol.com end of the COVID tunnel will continue to shine brighter, and we sincerely hope for a return to our “old normal” sooner rather than later.

Telemedicine: The Convenient and Safe Way to Meet with Your Doctor

T

he days of making a doctor’s appointment just to sit in a waiting room and spend more than an hour in the office is over. Telemedicine is the new and improved way of meeting with your doctor. Telemedicine allows you to discuss medical issues, symptoms, and more with a healthcare provider in real time. You can receive a diagnosis, treatment options, and a prescription with just a short phone call, video chat, or email. Accessibility and affordability are the driving forces behind the growth of telemedicine. A patient may be in a remote area or unable to travel. Plus, it may help reduce the need to visit the ER. The average doctor’s visit is $149, and the average trip to the emergency room is $1,734. According to a 2017 study, the average telemedicine visit costs $79. As telemedicine becomes more popular, many health insurance plans are beginning to offer coverage. Before using telemedicine, check with your specific plan to know your financial obligation. These four tips will help you have an effortless visit: 1. Prepare - Write down your symptoms, medications, and questions you want to ask. Check that your technology works properly. 2. Find a quiet space - Find somewhere you can hear the doctor and allow yourself

time before the call to get settled. 3. Tell your doctor everything - Go into detail about your condition and explain concerns and any changes in your medical history. Provide any vital signs that may be helpful, such as temperature. 4. Agree on a plan - Ask questions about any prescribed medication, insurance, and agree on a treatment. Take notes and ask about follow-up visits. Telemedicine doesn’t mean that you’ll never step foot in a doctor’s office again. Remember, telemedicine is not intended for emergency situations. Health issues, including colds and flu, insect bites, rashes, and sore throats, are common issues. Telemedicine is a convenient, safe option for patients who may suffer from disabilities, want to stay in the safety of their home, or avoid possible infection. Parkview Knoxville

ur PLACE will be a licensed, non-profit, nonsectarian adult day center that will serve residents of Loudon, Monroe, and Roane counties who have been diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The new facility will be Our Legacy of caring and assistance for those who need our help. Our PLACE will operate five days a week: Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Each day participants will be offered a different program of activities suited to their abilities. These activities are designed to promote socialization and stimulation and may include music, exercise, crafts, games, pet therapy, reminiscence therapy, and more. Whenever possible, activities will be theme-based, highlighting the seasons, holidays, birthdays, and other special occasions. Fundraising for Our PLACE began with “A-Ride-To-Remember” sponsored by the First Baptist Church. The ride started on August 26 and was based on a 7,000+ mile motorcycle ride by Pastor Charlie Bernard, his wife, and two friends across the U.S. for which people made donations per mile or gave other amounts to Our PLACE. To continue to build a lasting Legacy, we are asking your help with two sponsorship programs. First, a “Commemorative Brick” fundraiser will offer engraved, 4”x8” bricks to donors that will be placed in an Our Legacy walkway adjacent to the new facility. Each brick will be engraved with three lines of the donor’s choosing and will cost $200. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church will sponsor the appeal and work with local churches and civic organizations to make it a great success within our local communities. For those wishing to make a larger donation, we offer the “Build Our Legacy” sponsorship program. Donations will begin at $1,000 and include various benefits like larger bricks or tiles for the Our Legacy park, tickets to a Grand Opening dinner, names in the Opening Program, sponsorship mentioned in the Our Place webpage and advertising, benches with engraved plaques, etc. Please help us build Our Place. It’s our legacy, now and for the future. For more information about either of the programs, call 865-801-1258, email legacysponsorOP@gmail.com, or visit www.ourplacetn.org. Good Shepherd Center Changes Annual Fundraiser

T

he Good Shepherd Center has traditionally held its annual dinner and auction fundraiser during late September/October. This year, because of the COVID-19 virus impacting the safety of the large number of people that normally attend the event, the Good Shepherd Board decided to take a new fundraising approach. Starting last month, there will be a direct mail solicitation to every household and business in Monroe County, as well as surrounding areas. Demand at the Center has increased with many new families needing assistance. Currently the Center serves an average of 1,500 people per month and distributes approximately 50 boxes of food per day or 30,000 lbs. of food/month at no charge. With the increasing need, the success of the fundraiser is critical. Funds will be used for purchase of food, for replacement of the van used to pick up food donations, and for building repairs. The mission of the Good Shepherd Center is “Give a helping hand to those in need.” The Center was started in 1986 to minister to people in crisis. The support services are for Monroe County residents that request food, clothing, or financial aid for utility bills. The Good Shepherd Center provides these services free of charge. More information is available on Facebook at The Good Shepherd Center. People can make a one-time donation or a pledge over time: Monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation would be appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible. The Center is a 501(c)(3) organization. Donations can be mailed to The Good Shepherd Center, P.O. Box 353, 5150 Hwy 411 S, Madisonville, TN 37354. The Center’s phone number is 423-420-8888.

Are Fish in Tellico Lake Safe to Eat?

12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, September, 2020

W

By Marilyn Hawkey

e are all concerned about fish consumption advisories for Tellico Lake. There are legacy issues with the water quality of Tellico Lake that remain and are frequently misunderstood, as questions arise about swimming, eating fish, and other recreational uses of the lake are safe. Bill Waldrop, a founder of The Watershed Association of Tellico Reservoir (WATeR) and Chair of the Water Quality Improvement Committee, has had a dialog with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) on this subject for decades. “Tellico Lake, the last of the lakes built by TVA, is considered one of the cleaner lakes in the TVA system,” said Waldrop. “Most of the water flowing into the lake originates upstream from national forests and the Smokies National Park. Essentially all industries in the drainage area are relatively new and comply with existing clean water standards.” What are PCBs? Waldrop said, “Many published articles discussing Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB) contamination of water bodies in this region mention the PCBs of Tellico Lake. This was a legitimate concern 30 years ago but not in recent years. The nonflammable, insulating properties of PCBs made them ideal for a wide range of industrial applications, including transformers and capacitors. However, in the 1970s, PCBs were found to have toxic properties and are likely a carcinogen and were banned by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). When disposing of transformers during that period, someone illegally dumped several into Chilhowee Lake (note dam and lake were owned by Alcoa) upstream of what was soon to become Tellico Lake. These transformers rusted and leaked the oily PCBs into the water,

and it flowed downstream. “When TVA initiated water quality testing in Tellico Lake in the mid-1980s, as they do all lakes throughout the Tennessee Valley, they discovered elevated levels of PCBs in lab analyses of the flesh of bottom-feeding catfish,” continued Waldrop. “This triggered TDEC to issue a Fish Consumption Advisory to discourage eating catfish from this lake. After a diligent search, TVA located and removed the transformers from behind Chilhowee Dam, thus eliminating the source of the pollution.” Although the source of the pollution had been identified and removed, the concern remained. The oily PCBs primarily adhered to sediment which was deposited in the lower depths of the lake. “The good news,” said Waldrop, “is that the natural downstream flow of the Little Tennessee River through the lake quickly flushed from the lake any PCB contaminated suspended material. This

natural flow rate also has steadily pushed the contaminated sediment on the bottom downstream along the lakebed to be accumulated in the deepest part of the lake near the Tellico Dam; only surface waters flow through the canal into Ft. Loudon Lake. Fortunately, clean sediment is being deposited over this PCB contaminated sediment. This process isolates the PCBs from bottom dwelling catfish and they are not contaminated by it.” Waldrop talked about how TVA samples. “TVA periodically collects six channel catfish for PCB laboratory analysis from two sites in the lake – near the Tellico Dam and mid-lake near Rarity Bay,” he said. “The concentration of PCBs in the six catfish collected at mid-lake shows that the concentration peaked in 1992 and has steadily decreased since then and is currently approaching the limits for detection. (See chart above.) Concentrations from fish collected near

the dam are also decreasing but have always been greater than those at midlake. Fish collected near the dam still contain concentrations of concern, and based on results from these two sites, TDEC continues to apply the Advisory to the entire lake. The Advisory is based on a steady diet of fish for a lifetime. U.S. Food and Drug Administration imposes a limit of 2.0 parts per million (ppm) for fish consumption, and this level has not been reached since 1992.” About mercury, Waldrop said, “Mercury was also temporarily included in the Fish Consumption Advisory for Tellico Lake for eight years beginning in 2008 when EPA reduced the risk limit for mercury in fish from 0.7 ppm to 0.3 ppm. The source of the mercury in the lake is from decades of mercury deposited from airborne emissions from coal-fired power plants. U.S. clean air standards have virtually eliminated the airborne mercury. The lab analysis of mercury in the fish collected by TVA exceeded the limit only once in 16 years, which triggered the Advisory. TDEC removed the mercury Advisory in 2016 after eight years of compliance, demonstrating that it is far easier to have a water body listed as polluted than to delist it when it meets a required limit. “The fact is,” continued Waldrop, “neither mercury nor PCBs are now a concern for any recreational use in Tellico Lake. The only pathway of concern issued by any environmental agency is by eating catfish from the lake every day of every month for 70 years.”

o you have a sentimental fur stole, jacket, or coat hanging in your closet not being worn? Let Restyle Your Fur perform an unforgettable “trans-fur-mation” by having expert furriers: » Convert it into a fabulous vest or 2-in-1 jacket with removable sleeves » Make a cuddly teddy bear, pillow, or throw » Enlarge, downsize, or repair your garment » Create a lightweight reversible fur/silk raincoat » Shear it to update the look Fur is one of the few materials that can be stripped apart and entirely restyled. Beyond alterations, it can be sheared to a short plush, updated to a different style, or, most commonly, added as fur collars, cuffs, or lining for raincoats and everyday coats to add luxury and style. At our Restyle Your Fur event, we will first assess the condition of the fur of your coat and then discuss updating and restyling options for you. Restyle Your Fur is proud to make perfect fur alterations, always with on-time delivery. If you were lucky enough to receive a fur coat from past generations, it may require a restyle to keep up with today’s fashion trends. Updating your furs will give you a new piece you can comfortably wear and even pass down to younger generations. Restyle Your Furs is an independent business that

Tennessee Medieval Faire Canceled Due to Pandemic

he award-winning Tennessee Medieval Faire has been canceled for 2020 due to the global pandemic. The rescheduled show dates were to be October 3-4, 10-11, and 17-18 in Harriman, TN. “With COVID-19 on the rise in Tennessee, the state guidelines were very clear to discourage large community events to keep people safe,” said Barrie Paulson, VP-Manager and Entertainment Director. “It was a difficult decision for us to cancel the show because we have been working for months on it, and people look forward to our events each year. But ultimately, our decision was based on safety.” The festival producers, Lars and Barrie Paulson of Darkhorse Entertainment, LLC, hope to continue hosting their annual Tennessee Medieval Faire and Tennessee Pirate Fest in the spring and fall of 2021. These events

are family-friendly outdoor interactive costumed themed festivals with numerous professional stage shows, street characters, crafts, food, games, and activities. The Paulsons would like to thank the participants, patrons, and community members for their support. In 2019, the Tennessee Medieval Faire received an Excellence in Tourism Award for Best Annual Festival by the Middle East Tennessee Tourism Council. In 2020, the Tennessee Medieval Faire received the Readers’ Choice Award for Best Festival in Roane County by readers of the Roane County News. For festival updates, visit www.TMFaire.com.

Discover Your Smoky Mountain Happy Place

M

any people find happiness in the Smoky Mountains. Burdens seem to roll off as the stately mountains come in sight. The Smokies are a restful place to retreat from the busyness of life and to be restored and refreshed by their beauty and serenity. Life is just better in the mountains. Having grown up in Gatlinburg, Carol experienced the splendor of the mist-shrouded Smokies that greeted her each morning as Mt. LeConte stood majestically outside her bedroom window. “My childhood was filled with the joys of living in the mountains,” Carol remembered. “My days were spent outside exploring, hiking, picking blueberries, sledding, building forts, and eating family meals on our front porch picnic table. My parents’ love of the mountains not only overflowed to my siblings and me, but also to everyone they met. They welcomed relatives and friends into our home who wanted to visit the Smokies.” In the 1970s, Gatlinburg’s popularity grew, and the local mom and pop hotels could not meet the demand for rooms. Visitors found themselves stranded with nowhere to stay. “Because the hotel owners trusted Mom and Dad, they asked them to take these desperate vacationers into their home,” Carol explained. “Our family would scramble to clean a bedroom and bathroom in time to welcome weary travelers to our mountain home.” Carol’s parents’ opportunities for hospitality continued to grow. Neighbors with vacation homes on the mountain began to leave their keys with her mom and dad so her parents could rent their homes. As Gatlinburg grew into a year-round vacation destination, people began to buy properties as a rental investment. As a result, Carol’s parents began managing more and more rental properties. Mountain Laurel Chalets Management Company was born – a true family business. “My siblings and I answered our home phone, Mountain Laurel Chalets, how may I help you?” Carol recalled. “We were reservationists, cleaners, laundry workers, customer service representatives, remodelers, and decorators. While in college, my siblings and I recruited friends to help us clean cabins on busy fall and holiday weekends. We had a

blast with our friends, and they enjoyed the extra spending money they earned.” Carol considers it a privilege to have grown up in a family who loved combining life and business together as they endeavored to bless others through their hospitality. Carol’s mom and dad are gone. They left her with this wonderful legacy of six incredible rental cabins nestled in the Smokies, which became Trillium Family Properties to be shared with families like yours. Imagine cool mountain breezes, the sound of gentle winds rustling through the surrounding trees, the smell of pine trees, an abundance of wildlife, and a crackling fire at sunset. And of course, the awe-inspiring views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Trillium Family Properties looks forward to the opportunity to share our mountains with you, your children, and grandchildren. Why not begin creating a lifetime of fond memories by contacting us today and reserving your family getaway or staycation? Why not start your own family legacy in the mountains? Visit us online at www. Greg Harris – CEO, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

BY RANDY PATTERSON, BOOMEROCITY.COM

R

ock and Roll is a staple of American – as well as Western – society. The genre has spanned eight decades. So it’s not hard to grasp that Rock and Roll needed a Hall of Fame and museum to commemorate, document, and memorialize its impact and accomplishments in the world. Halfway through rock’s life, that necessity became a reality with the establishment of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1983. Boomerocity has had an excellent relationship with the Rock Hall for going on 11 years as of this writing. The current CEO (since 2013), Greg Harris, has contributed comments for us on various Rock Hall inductees we’ve interviewed, and I felt it was high time we interviewed him to find out what is going on at the institution during these trying times. I reached Greg recently at his home. The Hall is now open, but at the time of our chat, the Hall was closed because of the pandemic. “The museum’s been closed since March 14, but we’ve been cranking,” he said. “We’ll talk a little bit about all the digital stuff we’re putting out there, going into our vaults, the Rock Hall classes, online learning for students and teachers - all that’s been terrific. We’re excited.” When asked about the changes he’s brought since assuming the helm of the Hall, Greg said, “We’ve changed the museum drastically. We recast the entire place with a brand new mission statement shortly after taking over as CEO. And we simply focus on... ‘to engage, teach, and inspire through the power of rock and roll.’ We’ve gone much heavier on live music and on experiential activities

in the museum. We now have a theater with a film by Jonathan Demi that’s an experiential theater with great, immersive screenings and amazing sound. You feel like you’re at the greatest concert ever. “We put in a restaurant on our first floor that’s a true restaurant with local celebrity chefs that do all the menus. We have food trucks that we own and a beer truck in a beer garden on our front plaza. A summer stage that we’ve gone from having a handful of concerts each summer to close to 100 days last year of live music on our plaza. And it’s all about creating an authentic experience. “When you arrive at the museum, there are giant letters out front that say ‘Long Live Rock’ that are immersive... you engage with them. We have speakers set up all throughout downtown Cleveland that play the same rock and roll song every hour - like church bells going off in downtown, but instead it’s rock and roll music. It’s synced up every single hour, and a new song plays. Then we’ve also grown our admission greatly - gone from about 400,000 people to closer to 600,000 people a year. Just in general, we’ve been in a really intense growth period until all this stuff hit us back in March. In fact, each year has been the best year we’ve ever had. January and February were our two best January and Februarys, March was trending to be the best that we’ve ever had, and suddenly everything ground to a halt. I forgot something before we get to that. We also took the entire second floor for the museum, called The Garage, and made it so visitors can play instruments and jam with each other.” I asked Greg if anything unique has taken place in the garage. “Oh, yeah,” he said. “We’ve had the guys in Metallica

in there cranking. We’ve had Booker T in there playing. We’ve had 100-plus artists in there. The band Berlin, Lita Ford, some of the guys from Deep Purple, some E Street Band members have been in there, Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC, and Glenn Hughes of Deep Purple. “Just about every rock fan knows the famous Prince guitar solo of ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ in honor of George Harrison. That was an induction ceremony. He’s there with Tom Petty playing guitar. Jeff Lynne of ELO is playing with him. Who else is with him? George Harrison’s son. And that’s only one induction moment. Inductions have happened for 35 years. There are a bunch more like that that are just off the charts and incredible. This week we’re doing Aretha Franklin’s induction, and we’ll share that. She also performs with Sam Moore. There’s another thing of Aretha singing with Reverend Al Green at the induction. It’s just the greatest footage at these important moments.” Greg shared so much more that you can now listen to by going to www.boomerocity.com. Also, visit www. RockHall.com to check out their online offerings, as well as to plan your visit there.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirtysix years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Discover the Art of Navigating Life’s Financial Uncertainties

Trish & Nick Chambers By Nick Chamber, CFP®, Chambers Wealth Management

A

s a Certified Financial Planner and investment manager for more than 30 years in Atlanta, my wife Trish and I decided to retire and move to the mountains of Western North Carolina near Cashiers and Highlands. However, after six years, I concluded that total retirement wasn’t for me. I had a strong sense that I could still make a difference by helping retirees and pre-retirees achieve their financial objectives. In addition, we felt somewhat isolated where we lived and had a desire to make new friendships and participate in various recreational activities, including pickleball and golf, which we really enjoy. After spending three of the winter months this year at our home in Roatan, we moved to Tennessee in April. Currently, we are living in a small townhouse rental while we build our home on a golf course. After speaking with Tom Irmen of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, I decided to advertise in his publication and write this short article. Basically, what I’d like to convey is that I’m just like you. At age 72, I confront the same financial uncertainties, stress, and physical challenges as you. And while I can’t provide solutions to all of life’s challenges, I promise that I will use my more than three decades of financial expertise and 72 years of life experience to help you achieve your financial and retirement goals. Whether you are investing for growth to maintain your purchasing power, increase your spendable income, leave a legacy to your heirs, or make a significant contribution to charities and ministries that are important to you, we can help. I think that you will also discover that our process will provide you with the peace of mind you deserve. To learn more about our services and our investment performance results (which have been remarkable), please visit www.chamberswm.com. You might also want to check out www.nc-entertainment. com, as I am a jazz vocalist as well. Thank you, and I look forward to helping you achieve your retirement dreams.

Say Hello to the Last Deck Board You’ll Ever Need L

et’s be honest, wooden deck boards just don’t cut it. They twist, warp, splinter, and require pressure washing and refinishing. And forget walking on them in your bare feet. Many of us replaced these old wooden deck boards with newer composite deck boards that, while more attractive than their wooden cousins, are easily stained and promote the growth of mold and mildew. Yes, you can pressure wash and bleach the mold and mildew away, but it will likely return after just a few short months. Well, say hello to the last deck board you’ll ever need. Manufactured from High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) reinforced with fiberglass, this revolutionary decking from WearDeck boasts the highest live load rating in the industry, resulting in unparalleled strength and durability. The deck boards are weatherproof, waterproof, and heat-reflective. Rated for ground contact and underwater installation, WearDeck will be the last deck board you’ll ever need. WearDeck is available in eight different colors and profiles in up to 28’ lengths. Every WearDeck board incorporates heat-reflective technology, a proprietary mixture of additives, and a limited lifetime warranty. Splinter-free and heat-reflective, WearDeck decking provides permanent static protection and an embossed wood grain surface for excellent slip-resistance. WearDeck also comes in two new barefoot colors designed to keep feet cool and comfortable on even the hottest days. Ready to replace those tired and worn out deck boards on your boat dock and deck? boost knowing someone cares for them. This recalled and recurring happiness not only positively impacts the recipient, but their family and friends, too! One of our recipient’s family members said, “Thank you for the beautiful bouquet that was delivered to my husband this week at Park West Hospital where he underwent surgery. Your thoughtful act of sharing brightened and not only lifted his spirits, but all of our spirits during his stay in the hospital. Thank you for this wonderful service you provide for our community.” It is these moments of kindness, encouragement, and emotional support that propels and sustains our volunteers to work so hard and so happily - collecting and preparing donated flowers, creating the individual bouquets, and delivering the re-purposed, upcycled bouquets to healthcare facilities. It is an effort that makes all of those involved in the process smile. Whether they are preparing the flowers, creating an arrangement, delivering a bouquet, or they are the recipient or the recipient’s family and friends – everyone gets a recurring emotional boost from the simple act of providing someone in a local healthcare facility with recycled flowers, encouragement, and a moment of kindness.

You Protect Your Car with a Garage... So How Do You Protect Your Boat?

By Patrick Boring, Certified Touchless Boat Cover Manager, Lifetime Docks, LLC stablished in 1997, Lifetime Docks, LLC has earned a reputation for superior craftsmanship, honesty, and integrity. Our expertise is why in August 2018, the Touchless Boat Cover company selected Lifetime Docks to become their exclusive representative for the sale, design, installation, and maintenance of their revolutionary and patented Touchless Boat Cover systems. Imagine a season on the water without the headache of having to clean your boat nearly every time you take your boat out. Instead, imagine pressing the button on your wireless key fob and stepping onto your watercraft and out onto the lake for a day of family fun in the sun. Say goodbye forever to boat cover snaps, straps and bungee cords, and bugs. Benefits to the Touchless Boat Cover: » Allows you to cover/uncover your boat in 30 seconds with a wireless key fob. » Saves you many hours of cleaning/waxing each season. » Protects the interior AND exterior of your boat from damaging UV rays and the elements, unlike a traditional snap-on cover. » Boaters say that they actually use their boats more often. Boaters often will pass on a 30 minute boat ride rather than spending 20 minutes to remove their traditional boat cover and 20 minutes to replace it. » Your investment made in the Touchless Cover comes back to you in a much higher resale value when you sell or trade in your boat in the future because it will still look showroom new. » You can select from 10 custom fabric colors. » Saves you $1,000s in boat detailing and re-gelcoating costs. » 5-year warranty protection. To underscore our commitment to our customers, Lifetime Docks, LLC has named me their Touchless Boat Cover Manager. My sole responsibility, and that of our dedicated team of certified technicians at Lifetime Docks, is the sale, installation, and maintenance of our Touchless Boat Covers. You protect your investment in your automobiles, so why not your boat? Like a garage on the water, I invite you to discover just how affordable your very own Touchless Boat Cover system can be. Call me today to set up your nocost, no-obligation consultation. Enjoy a season of family memories on the water and not on the dock cleaning your P boat. R

The SECURE Act is Changing the IRA Inheritance Rules Join us for a 30 minute Zoom webinar on Wednesday, September 16, at 10:30 am. You will learn:

Don’t Let the New SECURE Act Rules Take 40% of Your IRA

A

gentleman in his late 60s came to see me recently and told me that his beloved father had left him an IRA worth just over $1 million. He told me how he had already filled out the forms to withdraw the money and use it to pay off his house, take a trip, and give some money to his own kids and grandkids. And then he wanted help investing the rest of the money for his own retirement. I asked him a question that caught him by surprise: “Did you budget for the $400,000 in taxes you just triggered by taking a lump sum withdrawal of the entire account?” Sadly, he had not realized that the IRA withdrawal was taxable income. I had to tell him that the IRS doesn’t allow us to “un-ring” the bell, put the money back, and draw it out more slowly instead. There are no do-overs with inherited IRAs. I can see the potential for new tax mishaps under the SECURE Act that was enacted in 2019, which now requires beneficiaries to empty the inherited IRA account by the end

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

of 10th year following the year of death. Within that 10-year period, there is total flexibility - withdraw it all or withdraw none. I fear that the years might blur and heirs inadvertently lose track of how long it’s been and accidentally miss the deadline. Because if they empty the account on the first day of the 11th year, there is a 50% penalty on the late withdrawal PLUS income tax owed. A $1 million IRA would have a $500,000 penalty and a $400,000 income tax bill, leaving the heirs with $100,000. Crazy, isn’t it? On the plus side, the 10-year period is a great tax planning opportunity, allowing an heir to take large distributions in some years and none in others, using the flexibility allowed within that time period to their advantage, minimizing the amount of tax ultimately paid. The SECURE Act has raised the urgency of tax planning and ongoing advice. First, IRA account owners need their named beneficiary designations set up correctly to give heirs the option of the 10-year window, and second, the heirs need professional ongoing advice to minimize

their tax bill and avoid needless penalties. Navigating the nuances of inherited IRAs is not for the faint of heart - and there are no do-overs. As part of our wealth management services, we help our clients successfully navigate these intricate IRA rules. Our clients don’t spend their free time reading the complex tax code, because we do it for them! Peace of mind is priceless. Join us for a 30 minute Zoom webinar on Wednesday, September 16, at 10:30 am to learn more about how you can protect yourself from unintentional mistakes and use the SECURE Act IRA requirements to your advantage. Dollywood Announces Everyday Heroes Appreciation Days

D

ollywood officials have created a new campaign designed to recognize the hard work and commitment of essential workers. In celebration of the many frontline workers, first responders, public employees, and military who faithfully serve our country and communities, Dollywood’s Everyday Heroes Appreciation Days provide qualifying guests the opportunity to buy a one-day Dollywood admission ticket online for just $39 plus tax. The online-only offer can be purchased now for a limited time and is valid for use now through September 21. Frontline employees need a special redemption code - available from their employer - to complete the transaction. Eligible employees interested in the program should encourage their employers to fill out an online form (www.Dollywood.com/EssentialSignUp) to request a redemption code for their company. Everyday Heroes may purchase up to six $39 one-day

admission tickets to Dollywood Theme Park as part of the program. Additionally, they can receive rates as low as $129 per night at Dollywood’s DreamMore Resort and Spa. Dollywood officials also are extending another popular offer that asks the age-old question, “Why do kids get to have all the fun?” Thanks to the Everyone Pays Kids Price promotion, anyone who purchases a regular one-day admission online beginning now can do so at the kids’ ticket price. This ticket also is valid through September 21. To add to the value of the Everyone Pays Kids Price promotion, each ticket purchased as part of the offer includes a Dollywood refillable drink mug. The mug is valid for unlimited $.99 cold refills through January 2, 2021. It is a great value for everyone looking to squeeze a little more fun out of the summer months. Who says you can’t be a kid again?

Dollywood officials also recently made operational adjustments to the park’s current visit protocol by removing the reservation requirement for guests. The move is in response to favorable feedback from guests and the confidence of the park’s management team in being able to continue providing a satisfying experience for guests. There are still plenty of great memories to be made during Dollywood’s 35th anniversary season. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana (September 25 through October 31) features Great Pumpkin LumiNights presented by Covenant Health, while the season concludes with the 12-time winner for Best Theme Park Christmas Event, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana, November 14 through January 2, 2021. hen I was in the market for a paddleboard, I noticed them wherever I went. When we were expecting our first child, we shared knowing glances with fellow parents to be. When we are passionate about something, that “something” jumps out at us wherever we go. We tend to notice everything about the subject that interests us. For my husband, John, his passion is floors. You may laugh, and sometimes I do, too, but since we entered the deep-cleaning and restoration business a decade ago, he notices every single floor, walkway, and patio we encounter. Imagine conversation starters like: “This restaurant should have sealed this floor when they installed it. It could have stayed beautiful, but now it’s ruined.” Or “It looks as though an acid wash has destroyed the integrity of this tile. That’s unfortunate.” If the flooring is salvageable, sometimes he approaches the business owner and asks if he would like some help dealing with the problem. More than once, the owner is grateful for some free expertise, and a friendship is born. John has a vast array of knowledge about whether a stone is manmade or natural, if porcelain is old or new. He can differentiate between a color seal and a colored grout and which cleaning/sealing method the home or business owner should use. He knows how to properly clean and maintain tile, carpet, concrete, and even brick pavers. He often takes before/after photos of his day’s work. When he gets home, he often whips out his photos, describing each one in detail. Sometimes I chuckle when he gets so excited about his day’s work, but it makes me realize why he is so good at cleaning and why our clients appreciate him so much. He genuinely cares. It’s not only John’s passion about cleaning that sets Surface Doc apart from other cleaning companies. The equipment his crew uses is mind-blowing all by itself. A countertops self-contained disc uses purified water and 3,000 psi and 15 pounds of suction to blast dirt out of the pores of your floor and whisk it away. John’s knowledge and enthusiasm, partnered with the strength and precision of Surface Doc’s equipment, makes the difference, and that’s what sets Surface Doc apart from everyone else. If you want someone with the know-how, passion, and state-of-the-art equipment to make your home or business sparkle, call John at Surface Doc, or you can visit us tile & grout online to see before/after photos and streaming videos at www.SurfaceDoc.com. In the Garden by

Lisa Grugin

ell, we have made it to the end of the 3rd quarter. Thank you to those who have made plants a part of your coping mechanisms! Many of you have learned the joy of playing in the dirt, and we are excited to welcome you to the gardening family. If you have been frustrated, I encourage you to learn from your mistakes and keep trying. Any new hobby involves a learning curve, so don’t expect perfection. I’ve been doing this for well over 20 years, and I still learn new things all the time. Whether you are a seasoned gardener or a newbie, there are many things that you can do in your yard this time of year. Let’s get started on the list: » The most important thing that you can do this fall is to give your yard a good cleanup. Pull out ugly annuals and replace them with Pansies. Cut back perennials and divide spring and summer bloomers that have outgrown their location. Prune dead/diseased/ damaged branches out of shrubs. Most importantly, get any diseased or insect infested leaves that have fallen onto the ground up and away. Allowing the leaves to stay on the ground re-deposits the fungal spores and insect eggs into the soil. » You know I can’t go long without talking about water. Fall is usually great for planting larger trees and shrubs, but September and October can be dry. That means that you will have to make sure that any plants put into the ground during that time receive sufficient water. Sprinklers are just not adequate for anything larger than a one gallon plant. Hand watering or drip irrigation is a must. » What is your mulch situation? Even if you have a nice layer, go out with a rake and “fluff” it. The surface can become very hard and compacted druing the summer so that water does not penetrate. If most

of your mulch washed away during the storms, you should re-mulch or at least give a 1” top dressing. Not only does mulching improve the appearance of your yard, but it also helps keep temperatures and moisture levels stable during our yo-yo winters. » Do you have plants to add interest to your yard in the upcoming months? Too often I see homeowners who planned for spring and summer color but ignored the fall and winter. If your landscape is boring now, try some of these plants: In the tree category, Maples are a top pick for fall color. Red Sunset, October Glory, and Autumn Blaze are excellent reds. Gingkoes turn a wonderful yellow, but make sure you get a male. The females produce seeds that smell awful when they rot! (On an interesting note, the nut is delicious when roasted.) If you don’t have room for a big tree in your yard, remember that Redbuds, Dogwoods, and Crape Myrtles also have pretty fall foliage. There is an abundance of shrubs that offer fall color. For the sake of space, I will simply list some of my favorites: Burning bush, Cotoneaster, Fothergilla, Nandina, Oakleaf Hydrangea, Red Twig Dogwoods, and Virginia Sweetspire have beautiful foliage. Sasanqua Camellias usually starts blooming around Halloween and continue right on toward Christmas. Some Hollies such as the Winter Berry are also glorious, and Pyracantha is full of UT orange berries. Even blueberries provide a good fall show! Some of our perennials also have lovely fall foliage and/or blooms, and many will have some renewed growth with the cooler temperatures. Amsonia, Asters, Heucheras, Hostas, Ironweed, Joe Pye weed, and Sedum provide nice color. Grasses also provide color and movement all the way into winter. As for annuals, you get more bang for

These happy little plants will bloom for months and are available in a wide assortment of colors. Accent them with ornamental cabbage and kale. Last but not least are the fall vegetables. For those of you who did veggie gardens, you can continue them on into the fall and winter. Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuces, and spinach appreciate the cooler night temperatures of September. You can also sow carrots and radishes for salads. I’ll finish the plant section with mums, because there is a lot of incorrect info out there about them. First of all, there are perennial mums and hybrid mums. The perennials are taller and more open but are very reliable. The ball shaped hybrids that you see everywhere are a little trickier. Get them in the ground by the middle of the month and they may come back. They may, however, come back a different color or as lots of what

I call “mumlets.” There are also early, mid, and late season bloomers. The bloom time is usually four to six weeks, and that goes faster if it is hot and slower if it is cool. Buying them just as the buds are opening will give you the longest bloom span. To close, please remember our feathered friends. Fall migration is coming, and it is important to keep your feeders and birdbaths clean and full. Use a good quality seed or you are wasting your money on useless filler. We have gotten some beautiful new shipments of plants and fall decorations. Stop in and see how we can help you have a beautiful yard! Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month

T

from a very quiet home, but their owner is no longer able to care for them due to her own health issues. We believe that they’ve never been exposed to dogs or other cats and would be more comfortable in a home with no other pets. As is usually the case, one is more social (Prissy) than the other (Hannah). Hannah takes her cues from Prissy. If Prissy gives a thumbs up, Hannah will go with the flow. They are both a bit shy at first but are easy to warm up. Once you take them home, it is best to keep them in a bathroom for a few days with MANY visits by you. This will keep them from hiding in unreachable locations long enough to bond to you... you will be the bearer of clean litter, food, and love! You will be their ROCK STAR! Remember, these girls just lost their human and their home… their world is unknown and upside down right now. They need a new, understanding human to work with them… they are scared. There is a reduced adoption fee when you adopt both girls. All pet animals adopted from the shelter are spayed or neutered, wormed, have age appropriate vaccinations and testing, and are microchipped with registration. Cats are litter box trained. The adoption fees

he Dog of the Month from the Monroe County Animal Shelter is Silas. He is a 3-year-old hound mix who weighs 35 pounds. This rockstar is THE definition of determination! He came to us in pretty rough shape after he had been hit by a car. He has been an absolute gentleman during his recovery. Silas has never met a stranger and loves attention. He is a hound mix, so he can be quite vocal, but who doesn’t love a good conversation? Looking for a goofy, excitable, and loyal companion who will love you with his entire heart? Come meet Silas!

We also have a pair of indoor only, bonded sisters that are adults. Prissy is a Dilute Calico, and Hannah is a Tortishell. They are past the crazy kitten stage but still very young at 2 1/2 years old. They came

are $50 over one year old and $60 under one year old. Fostering a pet is a labor of love for most of us who do it. We all have a common goal of saving as many animals as we can. We can’t save them all, but through fostering, we can play an active and important role in saving many of them. Each month the Monroe County Animal shelter takes in far more animals than can be adopted out locally. In order to save as many as possible, we work with many rescues who are able to adopt them out quickly. Some of these rescues require that the animals be fostered in a home for a period of time, usually two to three weeks. Fostering ensures a

healthier and more socialized, therefore more adoptable, animal than one that is not fostered. Currently the shelter is overflowing with pets. Please consider fostering one. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is located at 170 Kefauver Lane in Madisonville (behind Walmart) and is open Tuesday through Friday from 114:30 and Saturdays from 11-2. The shelter is closed to the public on Sunday and Monday. Email animal.shelter@ monroetn.com or call 423-442-1015 for more information and to schedule a meet & greet with a pet. You can check out all available pets on our website at www. monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org. Due to an increase in the COVID-19 virus problems, the MCFA Thrift Store will be closed for the foreseeable future. However, the Thrift Store is presently selling furniture and other items via their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ monroecountyfriendsofanimals. Please check often to see postings off/on during the day. GREAT deals, cash only. Someone would meet you at the store for you to pick up your new furniture, including cribs, sofas, tables, desks, cabinets, dining room sets, TVs, etc. Fosters and volunteers ROCK! The need is great, so please help save the animals.

ccording to WebMD, Electric Shock Drowning, or ESD, “happens when an electric current - typically a low-level AC current from boats, docks, hoists or lights - ‘escapes’ and shocks nearby swimmers. The shock paralyzes them, so they can’t swim or help themselves.” Fortunately, there is a device called ShockIQ that can prevent ESD by monitoring the water around your dock for stray electricity. If stray electricity is detected, a siren sounds and the system’s monitor light flashes. Power to your dock is shut down instantly, and your ShockIQ system goes on battery backup and continues to monitor for electricity. To learn how to protect yourself and

Tennessee Theatre Launches New Streaming Ghostlight Series to Showcase Local Musicians

T

he Tennessee Theatre announces its new Ghostlight Series, spotlighting local artists by streaming concerts from the Tennessee Theatre stage. “The ghost light is a longstanding tradition designed to keep a theatre lit when it otherwise would be completely dark,” said Becky Hancock, Tennessee Theatre Executive Director. “Though the Tennessee Theatre currently is closed, or at extended intermission as we like to say, we aim to continue to celebrate music, arts, and entertainment. We want to bring that light into your homes even when we can’t gather together in the theatre. The Ghostlight Series will shine a light on Knoxville’s own outstanding artists and allow the theatre to continue to bring ‘live’ music to our community.” The Ghostlight Series will stream on Tuesdays, and the lineup includes Kelle Jolly and Will Boyd on September 1, Count This Penny on September 8, Frog and Toad’s Dixie Quartet with Brent Thompson on September 15, and Guy Marshall on September 22. All prerecorded concerts will stream via Facebook Live and can be accessed for free starting at 8 pm at www.facebook.com/TennesseeTheatre and on the Facebook app. In a flipped view from regular concerts, the auditorium will serve as the backdrop so viewers can enjoy the overall beauty of the historic theatre while watching the newly recorded concerts. The Ghostlight Series also provides an opportunity for the community and fans to support the arts, as the COVID-19 pandemic has had a tremendous impact on musicians, performers, behind-the-scenes crews, and venues. The Tennessee Theatre will accept donations that will be split with the featured performers. Donations can be made online at www.tennesseetheatre.com. The public also can support the Tennessee Theatre by sharing the free concert opportunity with friends and followers via social media and word of mouth, as well as tuning in to the performance on Tuesdays at 8 pm starting September 1. The lineup features artists known and beloved across East Tennessee. Vocalist Kelle Jolly, “The Tennessee Ukulele Lady,” is the host of “Jazz Jam with Kelle Jolly” on WUOT. Count This Penny is a singer-songwriter duo born in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains and who have graced the stage alongside Melissa Etheridge, Kacey Musgraves, and The Head & the Heart, among others. Frog & Toad’s Dixie Quartet focuses on Dixieland and early swing tunes. Guy Marshall is a band that blends country and alternative melodies with easy-to-singalong lyrics. “While the theatre remains closed to the public due to coronavirus concerns and suspension of touring acts, we hope this series brings light and joy to the community and showcases the musical talent in our own backyard,” said Hancock. “Thank you for supporting the Tennessee Theatre. We cannot wait to welcome you here once again to

HOLA Lakeway Cancels 2020 International Food Festival

H

OLA Lakeway regretfully announces that the community-favorite Lakeway International Food Festival will not take place this year. “Since its first iteration, the festival has grown into a treasured tradition in the community,” said attorney Willie Santana, co-founder and member of the board. “We held off on making this decision in hopes that we could salvage the event, but the board does not believe we can hold the event safely this year.” The festival, first conceived as a way to highlight the Hispanic & Latino community, has steadily grown into an important part of the Lakeway Area’s cultural, economic, and social character. During the past half decade, it has grown into a treasured institution in the region that showcases the important and unique cultural, economic, and social contributions that the immigrant families of the Lakeway Area make in our community. The Lakeway International Food Festival’s goal has always been to create an opportunity for the community as a whole to come together and celebrate the Lakeway Area’s rich and diverse culture. It also has made a lasting contribution to the local economy by attracting nearby residents to visit, eat, and shop here. “Our commitment to the continued growth of the festival remains strong,” said KC Alvarado, co-founder and current chairwoman of the HOLA Lakeway Board. “We will come back next year, and after the difficult year our community is having, we expect it to be a big party.” HOLA Lakeway encourages the public to stay tuned to its website and Facebook page because they are planning for other smaller events that will take place later in the winter or early next year in the spring that “will keep the community engaged,” according to Betsy Hurst, HOLA’s Executive Director. HOLA Lakeway succeeded the Latino Task Force of Morristown in 2014. In 2018, the organization began to see a growth in the community of immigrant families from other parts of the world like India, Micronesia, and Pakistan and decided to expand its efforts to serve all immigrants in the community. Today HOLA Lakeway is a grassroots, community-based organization with the mission of meeting needs and improving the overall quality of life for the immigrant population in East Tennessee’s Lakeway region. HOLA Lakeway offers various educational programs, such as English and Spanish classes, but is also actively involved in a variety of grassroots projects such as coordinating with the COVID-19 Task Force and Hamblen County’s Complete Count Committee.
