» Robocalls: A common scam is using automation to dial a large number of households. The robocall says “Can you hear me?” and the senior says “yes”. The robocall disconnects and now the scammers have the senior’s voice signature captured that can be used to authorize unwanted credit card charges. What to do? Simply hang up if you ever answer the phone and hear those words.

» Grandparents’ scam: By studying Facebook or simply calling and saying “Hi Grandpa, do you know who this is?” scammers can pick up the names of grandchildren. Posing as the grandchild, the scammer says he’s gotten arrested, or his car has broken down and he needs money fast. What grandparent doesn’t want to help their grandchild? So off they go to Western Union to send cash – for a totally fake scenario and the money is lost.

All funds to build in Loudon County are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income fami lies who are willing to partner with Habitat. These partner families help build their hous es and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses.

Ireceived a call a few weeks ago from a lady who excitedly told me that she’d just been notified that she won $5.4 million in a lottery, but first had to send $500 for processing to the National Sweepstakes Bureau. I had the unfortunate task of telling her there was no such thing as the National Sweepstakes Bureau and she was getting scammed. Certain scams targeted at senior citizens are particu larly egregious. According to the FBI, in 2021 there were over 92,000 older fraud victims which led to $1.7 billion in losses, up 74% from just the prior year. Here are a few of the top senior scams:

F all will be here before you know it, and it represents a season of change. Not only will the foliage start changing its colors, but temperatures will be more moderate. More festivals and venues are opening as compared to last year. Children will be going back to school, and though it’s time to start transitioning away from our summer wardrobe to warmer clothing, there is still an abundance of outdoor activities to enjoy. The pandemic has left its mark on all of us, and though it has changed the way we do many things, we can participate in so many of our favorite activities. We can still appreciate the beautiful area we live in and its scenery especially in the Smoky Mountains. Each season in East Tennessee brings its own unique beauty. Much of the lush greenery we so enjoy in the spring and summer is changing into vibrant yellows, glowing golds, striking ambers, and radiant reds. With such rich scenery all around us, it’s no wonder that this is many people’s favorite time of year to visit this special area we call home. We are blessed to live in this special corner of Tennessee. Labor Day is celebrated in September, and it symbolically signals the end of summer. Labor Day is a day that is dedicated to the achievements of American workers and the contributions they make to the strength and prosperity of our country and vital to our economy’s recovery. So, Labor Day serves as a reminder to celebrate and appreciate the American worker. With so many businesses experiencing staffing shortages, it is an es pecially challenging time to own a business; please show patience and appreciation for the workers with whom you come in contact.

» Government Impersonation Scams: Scammers call older adults and pretend to be from the IRS or Social Security. They tell them there are unpaid taxes and the senior will be arrested, or their SS benefits cut off, if they don’t pay immediately via wire transfer. Bank accounts are emptied and the senior’s identity stolen. Remember that NO federal agency will ever call. All legitimate communication is by mail.

I was called to serve as the interim pastor at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran church in Tellico Village in February. Living in Halls, I knew it was going to be a long commute every day, but I knew that, as an interim position, it could not last forever…a year, tops, and I would get used to the drive. This was my second congregation, but my first time as an interim, so I was sure I would not get too attached to this group. But I was wrong. I found the people of Shepherd of the Lake to be some of the kindest, most welcoming people around! They are a small, but mighty congregation, reaching out to anyone in the community who finds themselves in need. We have visitors walk in the door almost every Sunday. Time after time, those visitors end up returning and eventually become members. If you are looking for a congregation; if you have visited other churches, but you feel like something is missing, we welcome you to enter the doors at Shepherd of the Lake. I believe you will find what you have been missing…community…and a friendly one at that. August 14 was my last Sunday here. I have made many memories and some great friends along the way. My time of ministry here has gone quickly, but that would not have happened without the camaraderie and support of the members. Since the pandemic year of 2020, we have used several of these columns to discuss the impact Covid has had on our salon. This month, we will discuss how it has impacted our staffing. During the initial lock down of April 2020, we actually had two Teammates that decided not to return to work. Once we returned, two more decided that retirement sounded better, and just a few months later, yet another opted for an early retirement. Some had already been contemplating retirement, some didn’t care for the new operational procedures, and some were concerned with the safety of working in a close contact industry. Regardless of reason, we were left five Teammates short on a staff that normally has eighteen to twenty. No one seems to be able to give specific reasons why there has been such labor shortages, especially in the service industry, but suffice it to say the challenge has been very difficult. The Covid pandemic began a period of time that has presented us with the greatest staffing problems of our thirty-four-year history. While turnover has never been a significant problem at our salon, as evidence of the seven members of our Twenty-Year Club, it has become an issue that we have had to learn to deal with. We are now proud to announce that twenty-eight months after the initial lockdowns, we are back to being fully staffed.Weare thankful for the patience and continued patronage of all our Guests and are hopeful that we will not face cir cumstances like the ones that have led to our two plus year staffing shortage.

Barred Owl on Vine - It was a cold day as you can tell by her fluffed up feathers which keeps her warm. I say “her” because like many raptors, the females are larger, and she was a rather large barred owl. If you look you can see the barred owl has vertical bars on it abdomen and horizontal bars on its chest, this is where it gets its name from. When I came across this girl she was only a feet from the ground which is no surprise. We often think we have to look high up in trees but in reality they sit eye level or lower which I believe makes them faster at pouncing on prey which makes sense. Their food source include but not limited to, crawfish, snakes, small mammals. I couldn’t have asked for a better perch for her to choose to hunt from as it was “picture perfect.”

Barred Owlet - This is one of the owlets that came from the nest cavity photo I shared. While I have had the opportunity to watch several owlets being raised in this nest, this was the first time I was actually able to photograph one of the owlets this eye level after leaving the nest. As you can see, at this age they will have some main adult feathers but will still have white down on their heads. Typically they will stay amongst tree coverage where I can only hear them screeching away. If they can’t fly yet and were to fall from a tree, barred owlets are excellent climbers and can actually climb back up trees using their talons and bill. There were three owlets this particular year which is the normal number of chicks in a brood for barred owls. Mom and dad both care for the owlets for roughly 4 months which is longer than most owls.

We have seven species of owls that can be found here in Tennessee; 3 of those can only be found during winter months. Out of all the species of owls I have observed, the barred owl is the easiest to find. Barred owls prefer dense hardwood, coniferous forest, and wooded swamps, but can also be found in suburban areas. As mentioned in previous articles, nocturnal animals will be active during the day while raising young. So, this time of year is a good time to be out looking for barred owls because the owlets have left the nest and are learning how to survive. Barred owls will often use the same nest year after year and like large cavities in trees, stick platform nests previously made by another bird such as a hawk, or you can put out a nest box specifically for barred owls. If you ever do put out a nesting box for a barred owl, or any owl, proper placement is important. Make sure you have the right box for the right owl and you might get lucky! It’s also a good idea to stop the use of rodenticides if you do draw an owl in, as it can cause secondary poisoning to our precious owls and otherMostwildlife.myencounters with barred owls are calm, as they are usually quite com fortable with my presence as long as I am quiet and respectful. They have a distinctive call of 8-9 notes and can be described as “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?” which can be heard throughout the year as they are very vocal. Being in the presence of an owl is hard to explain, but there is just something so special about them and I hope you all get to experience it one day. Barred Owl in Nest Cavity - I have been following this particular nest since 2017 and her and her mate has raised several owlets. When nesting season is close they become very territorial in order to keep this nest. As you can tell from the scarce greenery that it was just starting to get spring time, so she didn’t have any eggs yet. She’s just simply staying close in order to not lose it to any rivals that might want it. The male is also stay ing close and was perched in a nearby tree keeping a lookout as well. They will chase off any threats and have been successful at it every year!

Barred Owl Portrait - This barred owl allowed me to get a close up of it so I’m taking that opportunity to tell you about this amazing face! As you can see the barred owl has dark brown eyes and only two owls in Tennessee have brown eyes; the barred owl and barn owl. Those eyes only see black and white and are as large as humans but 35 times more sensitive. You can notice around the barred owl face is framed with dark feathers; this is called a facial ruff. This racial ruff acts like a reflector for sounds that goes back into the ears, which are located just right behind the racial ruffs but are at different heights on the head, one lower ear and one higher. They can also altar the shape of its facial ruff to further detect its prey. It’s typical for barred owls to have asymmetrical ruffs; because of how they are built, they can hear sounds from ten miles away. They really are amazing!

Change is the one inevitable aspect of life, other than death. That is also true of your yard. Young plants mature. Trees fall and trees grow. What was once sunny may now be shady and vice versa. Sometimes our health or the health of a family member declines, and we are no longer able to do the gardening that we once did. Sometimes the one who did all the work in the yard is no longer there. Plants that look good from your patio might not look so healthy up close! ☼ You may be getting plenty of rain at your house, but I have had to drag out the hose a few times at mine. If you don’t have a rain gauge, use sentinel plants like hydrangeas (that droop when they are thirsty) to tell you when things are dry. You know what I am going to say next: Sprinklers are good for grass and flowers but don’t do diddly for trees and shrubs. Yep, I’ll keep saying that until everyone in the area understands and I stop hearing “but I have a sprin kler” when you come in and want to know why your plants are dead.

☼ Check for bugs, but make sure the ones you have are bad guys before you start spraying. Overtreatment is caus ing two serious problems: The problem bugs are becoming resistant to the chem icals, and good guys like bees are getting wiped out. Always start with the least toxic products first, then progress if the problem continues. I will add, however, that some insects will require a systemic product unless you can catch them in the crawler stage. Crepe Myrtle Bark Scale is one of those.

A challenging build during the worst of times….
