urrounded by the highest peaks in the East, Asheville is steeped in natural history, fall adventure, and cultural legacies – including America’s Largest Home, Biltmore. Significant variances in altitude among mountain ridges, slopes, and valleys, as well as a large variety of deciduous tree species, give the Blue Ridge Mountains one of the longest and most vibrant leaf seasons in the world, regularly placing the

Check out the scenery while sipping your beer of choice at Highland Brewing Company’s rooftop patio, along the French Broad River at New Belgium’s “Liquid Center,” or at the top-floor tasting room of Green Man Brewery’s “Greenmansion” in the South Slope. Destination breweries have also been popping up in the scenic countryside around Asheville: Turgua Brewing Company, a small farmhouse brewery set on a five-acre farm in Fairview and using locally sourced fruits and root vegetables, and Whistle Hop, with its antique train-caboose taproom, disc-golf course, and sweeping mountain sights.

Fall Fun: Signature Events

Fall Facts, FAST!

» Oktoberfest (October): Bavarian traditions meet Asheville’s eclectic vibe, with lots of local beer on tap » CiderFest (October): Cider, kids’ activities, and more set along the French Broad River at Salvage Station » Carolina Bonsai Expo (October): Showcasing juried exhibits by bonsai enthusiasts hailing from a seven-state region at The North Carolina Arboretum » Burnpile Harvest Fest (October): Hosted by Burial Beer Co., this burgeoning event features seasonal beers from 40+ regional and national breweries, a harvest feast by Burial’s permanent “food truck” kitchen, Salt & Smoke, and live music » LEAF Festival (October): For more than two decades, LEAF Festival has grown into an epicenter of music, art, and culture for thousands of families, set upon the beautiful Lake Eden grounds in nearby Black Mountain » Hickory Nut Gap Farm Barn Dances (Fridays in October): Perfect for families – enjoy dinner before dancing the night away, from Contra to Square Dance and Two-Step to Swing For the latest updates on all things fall, stay tuned for Facebook Live remotes with Explore Asheville’s fall-color experts at www.facebook. com/Asheville. Also, weekly color reports at www. FallintheMountains.com will gather input from biologists and weather experts, color-progression updates from area parks and attractions, autumn travel deals, and fall events. For more information, visit www.exploreasheville.com.

Asheville is fortunate to have one of the most vivid displays of autumn foliage in the world. Here’s why: »» Extreme Elevations: Ranging from 1,500 feet in the valleys to 6,684 feet at Mount Mitchell (the highest peak east of the Mississippi River), the color show descends the mountains »» Unmatched Biodiversity: There are more than 100 species of deciduous (leaf-shedding) trees in the Blue Ridge Mountains »» This results in an unusually long leaf season, starting late September in the higher elevations and extending through early November in the lower regions For more information, visit www.ExploreAsheville.com/ science-behind-fall-color.

Re: imagined Themed Art Competition and Exhibit

A Brown Bag Lecture with Rick Beyer

n a Brown Bag lecture on Monday, October 8, Rick Beyer will discuss one of the most extraordinary units in military history that trained in Tennessee, then went to Europe in 1944 to put on a traveling road show of deception on the battlefields of Europe, with the German Army as their audience. Armed with inflatable tanks, sound effects, and more than a few tricks up their sleeves, the men of the Twenty-Third Headquarters Special Troops, known as the Ghost Army, conjured up phony convoys, phantom divisions, and make-believe headquarters to fool the enemy about the strength and location of American units. A local East Tennessee boy from Sevier County, Claude W. Cardwell was a member of this company. He was the son of Robert Walter Cardwell and Lola Mae Clabo and is buried in Husky Grove Cemetery in Sevier County. Rick Beyer is a multi award-winning documentary filmmaker, whose works

have appeared on the History Channel, National Geographic, PBS, and others. He is a New York Times best-selling author and co-author of “The Ghost Army of World War II.” The lecture is free and open to the public and will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, located at 601 S. Gay Street in Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “brown bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit www.EastTNHistory.org.

thens Area Council for the Arts seeks submissions to Re: imagined, a juried art competition and exhibit held at The Arts Center November 12 through January 4, 2019. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded in three divisions: High school, college, and open. Residents of McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Polk, and Bradley counties are invited to enter between now and October 26. Entry forms are available at The Arts Center, located at 320 North White Street, and online at www.athensartscouncil.org. Following submission of an entry form, artists should deliver work for consideration between November 1-6. Pieces must meet the exhibition criteria to be submitted and a limited number of works will be selected. Artists should read complete entry criteria and submission instructions in the exhibit prospectus before submitting work. Prospectus is available at The Arts Center and online at www.athensartscouncil.org/ events/re-imagined-exhibit. The goal of Re: imagined is to promote artistic expression while highlighting the importance of conservation of finite resources. Reducing waste, reusing objects, and recycling materials are all a part of that. Artists can use this exhibit as

an opportunity to explore these ideas and create work that seeks to “re-imagine” the ways art is created and observed. Eligible work could be constructed from recycled, reused materials, or take conservation as its subject matter. The competition’s three divisions are high school (9-12 grade students in the designated counties), college (students who live in or attend any college in the five county area), and the open division (for any other resident of the designated counties). There will be a first, second, and third place cash prize awarded in each division, as well as the Pat Armstrong Best in Show award, a “Recycled Materials Award” for the work that most creatively uses recycled or reused materials, and a “High School Innovator Award.” The Opening Reception on November 16 starts at 5:30 pm at The Arts Center, with the awards ceremony at 6 pm to allow time for viewing the entries. Light refreshments will be served. The public, artists, family, and friends are invited to attend. For more information about this and other AACA programs, call 423-7458781, visit www.athensartscouncil.org, or stop by The Arts Center at 320 North White Street in Athens.

~ SALON BIZ 2018 ~

New Kid on the Block

H

ard to believe that 23 years ago this month I was the “new kid on the block” here at The Village Salon. As it goes through growth or replacing staff members, every salon must make additions to its design team from time to time. Here are some thoughts on how the “new kid on the block” could possibly impact your salon visits. Thinking back to my own humble beginnings, it seems like so long ago and so far away. Some of my teammates

at the time marveled or scoffed at my ideas and interpretations, as my approach to styling hair seemed to be a bit cavalier to them at the time. After several years of building a practice, some of the ideas once deemed to be new had trickled their way into several of my teammates’ regular routines of styling hair. Now it would seem that the tables have turned. Now, after 23 years of doing hair at the same station, I find myself as part of the old guard and watching our

“new kid on the block,” Andrew Hess, bring his new and youthful ideas into our salon. Basic elements of styling hair have been in place for centuries, but believe me when I tell you Brian K. Whitehead that a breath of fresh air Managing Partner from time to time is good The Village Salon for everyone involved. Having begun his styling career in the 21st The Village Salon century, Andrew has his fin222 Village Square ger on the pulse of both the in Tellico Village newest styles and the newest 865-458-9332 techniques. The infusion of thevillagesalon@aol.com his youthful approach has been good for our salon and our guests. Being the new guy should provide him with a wonderful opportunity to have an impact on the Greater Tellico Village Community for years to come. Even this old dog has been forced to learn a few new tricks in an effort to just keep up. If you are new to an area or come to a new salon without a referral, you are likely to end up with the “new kid on the block.” In our particular case, you would find yourself in very talented and capable hands indeed, and I, for one, am truly thankful Andrew chose The Village Salon to build his practice.

THE TENNESSEAN Hotel Opens Pat Summitt Suite to Benefit Iconic Coach’s Foundation

T

HE TENNESSEAN Personal Luxury Hotel has officially dedicated the Pat Summitt Suite to honor the iconic coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols and raise funds for The Pat Summitt Foundation. “The Pat Summitt Suite is an enduring tribute to a legendary leader,” said Nicholas G. Cazana, innkeeper at the AAA Four Diamond-rated THE TENNESSEAN Personal Luxury Hotel. “We wanted to honor the late Pat Summitt in a way that would be lasting and appropriate for an iconic coach and native Tennessean who did so much for Knoxville and the University of Tennessee.” Summitt coached the Lady Vols basketball team for 38 years and won 1,098 games and eight national titles with a graduation rate of 100%. After her diagnosis in 2011 of early onset dementia, Summitt and her son, Tyler Summitt, formed The Pat Summitt Foundation to raise funds to support Alzheimer’s patients, caregivers, and clinical research. Pat Summitt died June 28, 2016, at the age of 64, and her foundation continues the fight to find a cure. A portion of all room rates from the suite will be donated to The Pat Summitt Foundation. THE TENNESSEAN is located at 531 Henley Street alongside World’s Fair Park and within walking distance of the UT campus. Patrick Wade, Executive Director of the foundation, thanked THE TENNESSEAN for the high-profile partnership in downtown Knoxville. “We are grateful to THE TENNESSEAN for creating the Pat Summitt Suite and joining our efforts to help Alzheimer’s patients and caregivers and to advance clinical research,” said Wade. “A partnership like this not only raises awareness, but also allows visitors to the hotel and the Knoxville area to become even more acquainted with the foundation and Pat’s legacy in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.” Among those in attendance for the official opening were former Lady Vols, including Shelley Sexton Collier, who spoke at the event, members of the current Lady Vol coaching staff, UT representatives, community leaders, and elected officials. “I am grateful to be here to both see this suite in person and honor my coach,” said Sexton Collier, the captain of Summitt’s first national title team in 1987 and the Lady Spartans head basketball coach at Webb School of Knoxville, where she has won six state championships. “Pat’s influence guides my thoughts and actions to this day. I hope everyone who stays in this suite will leave with an appreciation of how special Pat Summitt truly was and how she continues to make a significant impact on the lives of others.” Heather King, who designed The Pat Summitt Clinic at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, also handled

the interior design of the suite. Design features of the suite include: » Natural wood elements in the chandelier, lamps, living room sofa, and side chair to represent a wooden basketball court. » Large wall graphic at suite entry outlining Summitt’s basketball accomplishments. » Living room sofa upholstered in fabric from Luna Textiles, which also is used in The Pat Summitt Clinic. Luna Textiles founder and creator, Anna Hernandez, lost her battle with Alzheimer’s disease on October 30, 2016, at the age of 56. » Sofa tufting on seat and back reminiscent of a basketball goal net with orange and white fabric. » Graphic element outlining Summitt’s “Definite

Dozen” rules for success. » Images from her esteemed coaching career. The announcement of the Pat Summitt Suite coincided with World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign by Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) in September to raise awareness and challenge the stigma that surrounds dementia. “Pat Summitt was a Tennessean to the core, and her death from Alzheimer’s disease affected all of us,” said Cazana. “By opening this suite, we can participate in efforts to raise research funds for a disease that has devastated far too many families.” For more information about THE TENNESSEAN and to make reservations, call 865-232-1800 or visit www. thetennesseanhotel.com.

GFWC-Tellico Announces 23rd Annual Charity Home Tour

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2018

November 4 from 1–5 pm

T

his year there are four beautiful homes to tour and a presentation at the Tellico Village Yacht Club by Braden’s Lifestyles on decorating trends at 1:30 and repeating at 4:00. This year’s homes include: • A charming arts and crafts design located in the Mialaquo neighborhood, which incorporates a touch of the Tennessee rustic! This home features beautiful Tellico Lake in its backyard, and in the house a gourmet kitchen (complete with large hidden pantry), a fireplace on the screen porch, and, of course, what home is complete without a unique spa area for four-legged BFFs? The Tedescos are clever and crafty and have incorporated their talents and hobbies into the home with great spaces for hobbies and creativity – Mr. Tedesco is quite the builder/carpenter, who gives most of the credit to his better half! This home offers a gentle stroll to the water and is a great spot for relaxing and enjoying the best of lake living. • A beautiful 4,200 square foot home in the Toqua neighborhood greets you with a great room that offers a stunning 29’ cathedral ceiling of Eastern pine above, exotic hardwood flooring below, and phenomenal windows straight ahead. This artistic

and cleverly designed home is shared by brother and sister families, Luers and Loy. It was created to be a wonderful, peaceful environment for their large family gatherings, as well as each having their private sanctuaries. They have an amazing collection of sconces throughout the home that were saved from opera houses and grand theatres from around the world. An elevator from the main floor to the second owner’s suite, a tram from the deck to the dock, and a family room in the loft are just a few of the many interesting concepts of this house. This home is a wonderful, peaceful retreat with all the things the families treasure and love. • A 5,000 square foot brick lakefront home in the Tanasi neighborhood was designed to offer panoramic main channel views of the lake. The creative designs and renovations that the Snyders and their talented daughter made can be seen as soon as one walks into the house and then reviewing the before and after pictures. They have wonderful mementos of time spent living all around the globe, and the delightful mix of the new with the old and the antique creates an inviting home for all to visit. • A custom built 4,200 square foot home

For Truly Unique Holiday Gifts

in Tommotley Shores is perfectly situated to capture panoramic views of Tellico Lake, the Tanasi golf course, and even adventurous divers on the lake-immersed silos. The furniture look of the kitchen, the relaxing and built-in banquette, the dining space in the large window area, bright windows, coffered ceilings, and the peaceful office setting were well designed by the Herzogs and their builder, Weaver Homes. The first floor is 2,400 square feet, and the lower level is 1,800 square feet and is, as Mrs. Herzog says, “A spacious ranch sitting on top of a three bedroom guest resort.” Come and enjoy the indoor and outdoor clever surprises everywhere you look! For the 2018 Home Tour, our Diamond Level sponsors are Amish Excellence (Knoxville), Lakeside Real Estate Group (Tellico Village), Kit Keener of Keener Homes, AWS/EcoWater System (Louisville, TN), Braden’s Furniture (Knoxville), and the Painted Room (Knoxville). At the reception, you will be able to enjoy artisan coffee from Lenoir City’s very own Ugly Mug and home-style cakes, visit with our sponsors, and look at the baskets of gifts to bid on. All of our sponsors (Diamond, Platinum, Gold) will have tables at the Yacht Club with information about their products and how they can help you with your financial, legal, construction, insurance, and/or home décor needs. In addition to sponsors, we will have a silent auction on baskets that

have been donated by our sponsors and friends of the GFWC-Tellico Women’s club. Some of the items that have been donated so far include a Pampered Chef basket, dining out gift cards, travel bag filled with items, golf lessons, wine, and home décor items. The GFWC-Tellico Women’s Club is known for its home tour, but we are also known for the support we give to local charities in Monroe and Loudon counties, as well as international from the proceeds of the Home Tour. Included in those charities are the Boys and Girls Club, Child Advocacy Center, IVA’s House, Good Samaritan, Weekend Food 4 Kids, Imagination Library, Habitat for Humanity, Smoky Mountain Service Dogs, WATeR, Steekee School for STEAM Class supplies, Yellow Ribbon Fund, as well as Kisame Orphanage in Kenya for scholarship and For One Another (a water filtration system). Our 2017 Home Tour allowed us to give more than $14,000 to these charities. We couldn’t have done it without the support of you and our sponsors. Tickets can be purchased in the Village at Sloan’s Hardware, United Community Bank, and The Village Salon. They can also be purchased from GFWC-Tellico women’s club members, or you can call 865-408-0138 or 865-458-5253. “BeDazzled” Jewelry Show

T

he Art Market Gallery, a 60+ member juried artist co-operative in downtown Knoxville, celebrates Tennessee Craft Week October 5-14 by showcasing the work of five jewelry artisans. This special show, called “BeDazzled,” will run at the gallery throughout the month of October. Tennessee Craft Week is a collection of craft events and happenings taking place across the state every October. Its purpose is to connect and celebrate the work of craft artists and the businesses that support them. The Art Market Gallery is lucky to have five talented jewelry artists as members: Roger Kroll, Jennifer Lindsay, Nancy Rowland-Engle, Lynn Straka, and Kristine Taylor. Each will have their work on display during “BeDazzled,” bringing their own perspectives, inspirations, and skills to the craft of jewelry making: Roger Kroll’s aim is to create a functional art form with his jewelry and metal art by exploring form, shape, color, and texture; Jennifer Lindsay fashions one-of-akind, intricately beaded pieces inspired by architecture, gardens, and historical customs; Nancy Rowland-Engle creates contemporary metallic jewelry with an edgy, sculptural form; Lynn Straka is influenced by nature in making her mixed-media jewelry, incorporating sterling silver, copper, and bronze with semi-precious stones; and Kristine Taylor is inspired by good design and beautiful color in crafting her unique polymer clay designs, blending contemporary and ancient forms with abstract images. Please join us in celebrating these talented artists and some of the finest jewelry craft that Tennessee has to offer. In addition, you will also enjoy the wide variety of fine craft and fine art on display every day at the Art Market Gallery – voted Knoxville’s best place to buy art in 2016 and 2017 in the Knoxville News Sentinel poll. Owned and operated by more than 60 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery is located at 422 South Gay Street next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Charles Peters: Action Paintings on the North Wall Charles Peters will display paintings made with oil/ enamel, charcoal, sand, and/or collage. Although Peters has taken many art classes, he is primarily self-taught. He uses books, online courses, documentaries, and other resources to study technique and art history. Artist statement: “I paint everything I see and every way it makes me feel. There is no single subject in my work. My work, to me, is instinctual; I do it as an infant breathes. If I am not an artist in this life, I’m not anything. I’m unhappiness, I’m terror. I paint my chaos so that I may live one day in peace. I work hard to make a living out of my art, and I will thankfully go wherever this life takes me.”

Bryan Wilkerson: Tales from the Kiln – Skulls, Goons, and Toons in the Display Case A collection of handmade ceramics and original drawings by Bryan Wilkerson, a Tennessee native and Professor of Art and Design at Roane State Community College. His creative practices are focused primarily on ceramics and public art but extend into design and drawing. His work explores humor, craft, irony, and play through common symbolic references. He is also the creator and director of the ArtMobile traveling gallery and pop up workshop space. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday 9 am to 5 pm. For more information, contact the Arts & Culture Alliance at 865-523-7543 or visit www.knoxalliance. com. Dollywood Earns Three Golden Ticket Awards for Entertainment, Friendliness, and Christmas Event

D

ollywood continued its winning last month, racking up three more “best of” awards at Amusement Today’s Golden Ticket Awards ceremony held at Silver Dollar City theme park in Branson, Missouri. Dollywood earned finalist placement in eight categories. “I’ve said it before, but back when I started Dollywood, I remember just prayin’ that people were going to come visit us that very first year,” Dolly Parton said with a laugh. “Here we are in our 33rd season, still earning some of the biggest awards and honors you can get, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of what we’re accomplishing. I started Dollywood because I’m proud of the Smoky Mountains and wanted more people to come experience the beauty God has put right here in our backyard. We’re adding Wildwood Grove next year, and I know it’s going to give families more room to explore, imagine, play, and spend time together here in the Smokies. “The other reason I started Dollywood was because I wanted to hire the good people of Sevier County to work in the park. I knew when folks came and met the people who live and work here, they’d want to come back year after year because they would feel like part of the family. It must be working; we just won Friendliest Park for the seventh year! I’m so proud of the job our people do treating our guests well and going above and beyond to give them a truly memorable experience.” Dollywood’s three Golden Ticket Awards include: » Friendliest Park, for the seventh consecutive year » Best Shows, Dollywood’s 10th consecutive win » Best Christmas Event, the only park to ever earn this award, Dollywood celebrates its 11th consecutive win Dollywood also had Top Ten (finalist) positions in five additional categories: » Best Food, second place » Cleanest Park, third place » Best Water Park for Dollywood’s Splash Country, fourth place » Best Park, fifth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Lightning Rod, sixth place » Best Wooden Coaster for Thunderhead, 10th place “During the two decades that Amusement Today has honored parks with the Golden Ticket Awards, it has been incredibly impressive to see Dollywood continue one successful move after another,” said Tim Baldwin, Golden Ticket Awards Communications Coordinator. “The park’s presence spread through all the categories is undeniable. They seem to hit the key ingredients to creating a wonderful guest experience – the food, the staff, the

entertainment, and rides are all top-notch.” Calculated from an international poll conducted by Amusement Today, the industry’s leading trade publication, the Golden Ticket Awards are the results of a detailed survey sent to a database of experienced and well-traveled amusement park fans around the world in balanced geographical regions. Voters are asked to rate the “best” in a number of categories such as best parks, roller coasters, water rides, shows, kids’ area, landscaping, and Christmas events. “I think our voters, along with any guest that enjoys a visit to Dollywood, are moved by the wonderful experience,” said Baldwin. “The environment is fun and welcoming, which makes it so memorable. I think each of us embraces those times when family or friends just have a wonderful day together. That’s Dollywood.” The Golden Ticket Awards are the most sought after awards in the business of amusements and attractions. The awards have become the subject of much discussion by park aficionados the world over and garnered mentions in such notable media outlets as USA Today and the Chicago Tribune and by the late radio newsman Paul Harvey. The awards also were the topic of a one-hour Travel Channel documentary. A number of memorable moments are in store for Dollywood guests in the coming months. Dollywood’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana features the return of an even larger Great Pumpkin LumiNights with double the displays and double the fun! Additionally, more than 625 Southern gospel concerts take place throughout the festival. Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana, now the 11-time winner for Best Christmas event, grows with the addition of Glacier Ridge, an immersive new experience that adds more than one million lights to the park. Now boasting five million spectacular lights, Smoky Mountain Christmas puts guests in the holiday spirit with stunning lights displays, tantalizing food options, traditional shows, and fun experiences like the Parade of Many Colors and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and friends. In 2019, Dollywood opens Wildwood Grove, an extraordinary new land that features 11 thrilling experiences for guests, comprised of six unique ride attractions – including a suspended family roller coaster called The Dragonflier – the 55-foot-tall Wildwood Tree, live entertainment, various indoor and outdoor play areas for families to enjoy, a new restaurant, and more. For more information about Dollywood, call 1-800-DOLLYWOOD, visit Dollywood.com, or download the Dollywood App.

Eric Johnson

G

uitar aficionados are all too aware of guitar maestro, Eric Johnson. His 1990 release Ah Via Musicom, which was certified platinum plus and launched Eric’s signature hit “Cliffs Of Dover,” won the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance and made him a much envied and mimicked guitarist. Eric and his band will be performing at the historic Bijou Theatre on October 10th, which promises to be an incredible evening of amazing guitar mastery. I called Eric at his Texas home and asked about what his current tour and show will be like for Knoxville. “This is a retrospective thing with the original members of the Ah Via Musicom record – Tommy Taylor (drums) and Kyle Brock,” he said. “We did almost a

three-month tour about six months ago, and it went really well, so we decided to do a second leg to try to go to all the places that we didn’t get a chance to go to on the first run.”

When asked when he last played the Knoxville area, Eric said, “You know, it’s been years. We’ve played Nashville, Memphis. We haven’t been to Knoxville in quite a while. Probably been 10 years.” I asked if Eric was going completely acoustic orgoingfull-blownelectricforthislegofthetour. “I might do a few acoustic things, but it’s with the bass player and drummer, originally, that I played with on the Ah Via Musicom record,” he said. “Basically, I’ll do like a short set of just whatever to start the evening and then take a quick break and come back and play the whole Ah Via Musicom record from start to finish for the second set.” As for what it was like for Eric, Tommy, and Kyle to get back together and play again, whether it was different, and if it bred a new feeling and interpretation for the album, Eric said: “There’s a lot of improvisation with most stuff I do – especially the electric stuff. So there’s a lot of room for improvisation that will be a little bit different than it originally was. But the main frame of the theme once we got together was, like, immediately, there was a chemistry that we had originally. I think certain people have certain chemistry and they’re able to do certain things. It just kinda fell into place – as if there had been no time in between.” Every tour seems to have a crowd favorite with a particular artist. I asked Eric if there is a particular tune that seems to draw the biggest reaction. “I think everybody likes to hear ‘Cliffs

of Dover,’” he said. “There are a couple of other ones like ‘Trademark’ and ‘Righteous” and stuff that did well when they came out back in the ’90s. I think they enjoy just hearing the vibe of that record. I guess it’s nostalgic, obviously. They’re pretty open to whatever we want to play.” His tour runs into early November, so I asked what was on his plate after that and what’s going on for him next year. “Well, I’m really well into an acoustic and piano record right now,” he said. “I’m more than halfway finished with that. I’ve just been working on that for the last month and a half. Gonna try to get that done and out. Next year I’ll probably do some new touring on the new stuff. I just want to keep recording and got a bunch of new tunes and ideas for a new electric record as well. Doing a two-volume acoustic record.” While Eric will likely be entertaining us for many, many years to come, I asked him how he would like to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “I think being remembered for just trying to make people feel good while we’re here, you know?” he said. “Standing on that side of the balance system that is making people feel a little more good or more positive or more wholesome. God knows the world needs it! The more people that stand on that balance, the more energy – you truncate that energy. We’re here, so what are we gonna do while we’re here? Are we gonna use our fantastic talent or art or gift or whatever gift we have… how do we use it? Do we use it to disperse more pandemonium or negativity, or do we want to use it to put smiles on somebody’s face? Nothing more, nothing less is what I’d like to be remembered for.” Then, putting a bit of levity into his final comment to me, Eric adds: “Other than that, I want a 200-foot sculpture right in the middle of Austin, Texas. Just kidding!” Tickets can be purchased at www.knoxbijou.org. The extended version of this interview can be read at www.boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Art Market Gallery’s October Featured Artist Exhibit and Reception

18A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2018

R

ecent works by artist Fran Thie and potter Larry Gabbard will be featured throughout October at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the artists, including complimentary refreshments and live music performed by Harold Nagge, will begin at 5:30 pm on October 5th during downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk. The show will highlight Fran Thie’s pastel and watermedia works and Larry Gabbard’s fast-fired clay pottery. The Art Market Gallery is also happy to welcome four new members in painting/drawing – Carole Quin, Kara Lockmiller, Pebbie Mott, and Linn Stilwell – whose work will be on display beginning October 1st.

Fran Thie Fran is an established pastel and watermedia artist whose work reflects her love of creative writing and literature by presenting sensitive, impressionistic, and expressive interpretations of nature in both landscape and abstract paintings. Through intuitive use of color and texture, she strives to transform an ordinary scene into a special place where both drama and serenity can co-exist. Fran paints in both pastel and watermedia, but her primary specialty is pastel. By first preparing an

underpainting in acrylic or watercolor, she lays a foundation for visual depth and richness, which she then overlays with pastel. While many of her works have been painted on location, she often begins the painting from a photograph or sketch in her studio, then puts the resource material aside and completes the painting by intuitively reacting to the painting surface. Her works, whether representational or abstract, always have their foundation in the world of nature. Fran regularly exhibits in juried exhibitions across the Southeast, with a number of awards to her credit. Her paintings have been juried into the Oak Ridge Open Show, the Southeastern Pastel Society’s International and Members Exhibitions, The Appalachian Pastel Society’s National Exhibition, and the Virginia Highlands Festival, among others. She is active in the Knoxville arts community, having previously served as president of the Tennessee Artists Association and the Knoxville Watercolor Society. She is also a member of Art Group 21 and the Tellico Art Guild. During several years in the past, she participated in the Knoxville Museum of Art’s Artists on Location, Covenant Health’s Artsclamation, and taught workshops in pastel painting.

Larry Gabbard Larry began his pottery career after moving to Kingston, TN, in 1999 and training initially at the Oak Ridge Art Center (ORAC). Most of his pottery is wheel thrown; he seeks out unique, alternative kilns and firing techniques (e.g. raku, horse hair, saggar, obvara, and pit firing). Larry attends workshops of well-known potters throughout the Southeast, studying and applying their unique techniques. He has attended classes at John Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC; Hambidge Center for Creative Arts at Rabun Gap, GA; Mudfire Gallery, Decatur, GA; and the ORAC in Oak Ridge, TN. Larry enjoys fast-firing techniques, which create a rich variety of textures and colors on bisque clay. He finds the unexpected marks made when clay, heat, and smoke interact to be among the most intriguing and challenging

of finishes to perfect and reproduce. Larry is a member of The Foothills Craft Guild, The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville, The Art Market Gallery of Knoxville, The Oak Ridge Art Center, and The Haywood County Arts Council. Owned and operated by more than 60 professional regional artists, the Art Market Gallery, located at 422 South Gay Street, is a few doors away from Mast General Store and next to Downtown Grill & Brewery. Hours are 11 am to 6 pm Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday, 11 am to 9 pm Friday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and parking in the abutting garage and on the street is free on weekends and after 6 pm weekdays. For more information, call 865-525-5265 or visit www.artmarketgallery.net or www. facebook.com/Art.Market.Gallery.

Plan the Perfect Pantry

O

nce used just to stock food, today’s pantries, whether a walk- or reachin, are often designed to also store small appliances, serving pieces, and even a second refrigerator. They can serve as an extension to the kitchen. While we all would like the largest pantry possible, a small, well-designed pantry is always better than one that is large but badly designed. If you’re planning your pantry for a renovation or new home, there are several important ideas to keep in mind:

Examine the Space

Make the pantry easily accessible to areas where you prepare food and cook. Everyone’s kitchen layout, habits, and cooking styles are different, so think about your kitchen space and how you use it. Once you know where your pantry will fit best in your kitchen and how much you need to store in it, you can begin planning the layout.

Allow for Walking Space

In a walk-in pantry, the temptation is to design for minimum aisle space and maximum storage. This is always a mistake. The minimum walkway width should be 34”. Unloading groceries in too narrow of an aisle may make you feel like a contortionist.

Create Effective Storage

When designing a pantry, the most important features maximize convenience, visibility, and accessibility. The pantry should be laid out to quickly see the items you need and easily reach them. By making everything convenient, visible, and accessible, you’ll save time and money, because you won’t keep food past its expiration date or forget about items because you can’t see them.

Plan on Adjustable Shelving

Altering the height of your shelves will accommodate various sizes of food products and small appliances. Make sure the shelves are not too deep and you can see everything at once by placing smaller items at the front and larger ones at the back.

Include Special Storage Features

Using narrow cubbies for large platters, spice or wine racks, pull-out wire baskets for root vegetables, and other storage compartments are ideal for awkward items that are hard to stack.

Include a Counter

If you have the space, include a countertop to set bags of groceries on while they are being unloaded. This area should be at least 15” wide. There are a number of small appliances you may want to use on the pantry counter, so plan on installing an outlet above the counter. Even if you don’t plan to include any outlets, you never know what you’ll want in the future, and at that point it’s not easy to add them. With preplanning, you’ll be surprised at the storage space, no matter the size of your pantry. Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

Planning Continues for the UW Kick-off Street/Business Fair

T

his annual event will again take place this year in Tellico Village Square on Saturday, October 6, starting at 11 am and ending at 2 pm. Plans have moved closer to finalization with the completion of the list of businesses and partner agencies that will sponsor and participate in the fair. The following are the sponsoring businesses that will participate: Edward Jones, Gary Stuart Office, American Commissary (Lenoir City), Premiere Consignment, South East Bank, Village Realty, Plemmons Law and Title, Gallaher Plastic Surgery, Summit Medical Group, Caribbean Canines, and Flexx Fitness. Each firm will have a booth where representatives will be available to answer any questions about the goods or services they offer. Some have indicated they also may have prize drawings for visitors. As a condition of their participation, each firm has made a donation to the TV United Way drive, thus giving the 2018 campaign a healthy kick-start. The business booths will be in tents adjacent to the Welcome Center. Opposite them, across the parking area, will be a tent housing the partner agencies that will be participating. These are service agencies that receive funds from United Way based on a very vigorous vetting process. It requires they provide detailed justification for the funds they request from United Way. Their participation will provide an opportunity for fair attendees to learn directly from them how the funds they receive are spent. The following are the agencies that will be present: Stayin-TV, TV Volunteer Fire Department, CASA of the Ninth Judicial District, Kid’s First Child Advocacy Center, The Good

Samaritan Center, Loudon County Health Improvement Council, Loudon County Senior Center & Office on Aging, East TN Epilepsy Foundation, Project Lifesaver, Iva’s Place, and Senior Citizens Home Assistance Service. Of course the big drawing card for the event is the vehicle show. As in past years, three village clubs will participate. These include the Village Vettes, the Classic/ Vintage Car Club, and the Motorcycle Club. The vehicles will be situated in the parking and grassy areas in front of the Welcome Center. Attendees to the fair will be able to vote for their favorite vehicle in each of the three categories by donating $1 per vote to United Way in a container mounted near each vehicle. Multiple dollar donations equal multiple votes. Vehicles in each category garnering the largest amount of donations will be declared the class winner. Each winning owner will receive a prize from the UW committee. Rounding out the entertainment will be DJ Gary Bluemel playing a lot of music that is favorite to TV residents. And, of course, no real TV event would be authentic without some free food. In this case, it will be hot dogs, chips, cookies provided by the Neighborhood, and water. This is a non-football weekend for the Vols, so come on out and join us. It is after the TVCC Garage Sale, so you can pick up some goodies at the sale and then join us for the fun.

What Every Woman Should Know By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

L

adies, do you ever feel like you’re juggling so many balls in the air that if someone hands you one more ball, it’s all going to come crashing down? Now add into the mix the startling statistic that 75% of unpaid caregivers are women, and those caregivers are providing 20 hours/week caring for their mother. Being a woman is a twoedged sword when it comes to long-term care (LTC) – we are both more apt to be the caregiver and the one ultimately needing care. Sociological expectations dictate that women step into the role of caregiver first and indeed handle the most difficult tasks of helping with toileting, bathing, and dressing. The sacrifice of these caregivers is not just personal time – it is the physical stress of caregiving, time lost toward their career, parenting their own children, or leading a healthy lifestyle. Women are more apt to need care too. We live longer than men, are more predisposed to Alzheimer’s and dementia, and, in fact, typically need LTC for 1.5 years longer than men. But as widows, we are more likely to live alone, with no one to help with daily activities, and have less household income.

Women are more apt to need care too. We live longer than men, are more predisposed to Alzheimer’s and dementia, and, in fact, typically need LTC for 1.5 years longer than men. Here are three simple steps to help you prepare for these challenges: 1. Think about your life and the impact if you or a loved one would need care. Can you provide it without sacrificing your own career or financial well-being? Can you physically perform the tasks, or can you pay someone to do it for you? 2. Plan for LTC as a family. Talk with your spouse, siblings, parents, and in-laws. Have a group meeting with a financial professional versed in LTC planning who can provide planning options and facilitate the discussion. 3. Call us or visit www.marshlongtermcare.com and request a complimentary copy of Don Quante’s book, Don’t Go Broke in a Nursing Home, to start educating yourself on the many positive ways to solve the LTC challenge. Learn about veteran’s benefits, asset-based LTC solutions that also provide a death benefit for your heirs, and how to leverage the cash value in existing annuities or life policies for tax-free LTC.

LTC costs can derail the most carefully thought out retirement plan, so get started today – there’s no time to waste. Rev Up Your Garage

e’ve all seen it: The house that is the epitome of curbside appeal – until the garage door opens, revealing a disorganized mess. If your garage’s main purpose is random storage, maybe it’s time to repurpose all that valuable space. PremierGarage of Knoxville can help you transform your overlooked and underused garage into functional living space, starting with a custom garage floor to take your garage from frantic to fabulous. Why consider anything beyond your standard-issue concrete garage floor? » Protect concrete from the harsh chemicals and liquids that leak from your automobile. Even the water, salt, and snow your car brings into the garage promote deterioration and cracking. » Cleaning is easier. Untreated concrete gives off dust, but a flooring system significantly reduces dirt and dust. It prevents materials from cars and your other garage-based activities (gardening, building, painting) from soaking into the porous concrete. » Fill and cover-up existing cracks for looks, safety, and protection. » Open up new activities in your garage. It could double as a workout room, gardening center, or children’s play area. » Increase the resale value of your home. For a striking and durable garage floor coating that is easy to maintain, Knoxville’s PremierGarage can transform an oil-stained, pitted, and peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage, serving East Tennessee for more than 10 years, combines its proprietary hybrid polymer flooring system technology with their extensive industry knowledge and experience to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. The two-day process starts with technicians who diamond grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond that substantially outlives traditional epoxies. The polyurea topcoat, which cures two times harder than epoxy, provides a continuous, non-porous coating surface that naturally resists various liquids that may leak from your automobile’s engine. It’s like armor for your concrete floor. Your garage will look more “finished,” and cleanup requires only a hose or mop. Available in dozens of various chip and color combinations, you can customize your garage flooring to fit your home and style. PremierGarage’s flooring solutions are also suitable for commercial and light industrial applications. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. ich Seymour, fundraising chair for Monroe County Friends of Animals says, “Anyone who loves cat and dogs – save the date Saturday, October 27, from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm and join us at the Dining for Cats and Dogs event at Kefauver Park in Madisonville. If you do, you will have a great lunch, have fun, and help a great cause.” The event will feature different types of specialty hot dogs smothered in all the condiments that make them distinctive. The featured specialty hot dogs are Chicago Dog, Michigan Coney Dog, West Virginia Slaw Dog, and Southwestern Dog. Admission is $10 for all you can eat and paid at the door. It includes chips and soft drinks. Kids under 12 eat free. Corporations wishing to support this worthy event can do so for just $250. In return, sponsors receive recognition banners, eight sponsorship tickets to the event (an $80 value), and free advertising materials. Proceeds for Dining for Cats and Dogs go to helping Monroe County Friends of Animals support the Monroe County Animal Shelter, to help support spay/neuter efforts in Monroe County, and humanely treating homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Monroe County. The mission of Monroe County Friends of Animals is to support Monroe County care for stray cats and dogs, prevent cruelty to animals, promote public safety by spaying/ neutering, and to provide education for cat and dog owners. In addition to attending the upcoming Dining for Cats and Dogs event, people can also help Monroe County homeless cats and dogs by adopting or fostering an animal, donating funds or merchandise to the Thrift Store, volunteering, or some or all of the above. Those who would like to attend but can’t can make a donation at www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org and clicking the donate button. About Monroe County Friends of Animals Monroe County Friends of Animals (MCFA) is a notfor-profit volunteer organization with 501(c) (3) status located in Monroe County, Tennessee. This group was created in 2004 by concerned citizens who recognized a dire need existing throughout the county for animal welfare. They consulted with the county’s governing body and entered into negotiations with the Monroe County government. This led to the formation of a county-run animal shelter, which was approved by a narrow commission vote at the end of 2004.

Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Week

E

rza is a brindle and white Plott Hound/Boxer mix who is about 14 months old. He has a wonderful puppy personality and is eager to play. He came to the shelter in June, and we believe he had been accidentally separated from his owner, although no one has claimed him. Ezra walks well on a leash and wants to play and be snuggled. He shows no aggression toward other dogs and seems happy to see anyone who walks by. He is a medium size dog and would be great with children who are past toddler age. Ezra smiles when we come to walk or feed him and is looking forward to finding a family he can call his own. George is a beautiful and healthy medium size boy who is about three-and-a-half years old. He’s probably a mountain cur/hound dog mix. He was picked up as a stray and has been at the shelter since the middle of July. Based on his good manners and friendly demeanor, we believe he was a family pet who was either lost or abandoned by his owners. We do not know if he is housebroken, but he appears anxious to go for a walk whenever possible to do his business. George is a happy guy who likes to play and is looking for a family to love him. He shows no food or dog aggression, and the tail starts wagging to greet any person who comes to see him. His rapidly wagging tail might be an issue with small children, so George is looking for a family with children over toddler size who want to run and play with him. Noel is a female DSH and looks very striking with her tuxedo coat and bobbed tail. She’s just over one year old and is very calm for her age. Medium sized and easily held and petted, she has a very sweet and friendly disposition and loves head and chin scratches. She would make a wonderful and loving companion. Mews is a big, friendly white and grey female tabby and is so sweet and calm. She’s one-and-a-half years old and likes to look out her condo window and watch what’s going on. She would love to have a cat tree in front of a window. She would earn her keep as a “watch cat” and advise you via body language and chattering of anything unusual outside.

Zig Zag is a medium sized DLH with grey in the front (male pets) your animals. Spaying helps prevent uterand brown in the back. October in the Garden

O

ctober is one of my favorite months! I love fall with its cooler temperatures and beautiful colors. I like fall food and decorations, and I really love fall plants. Let’s talk a little about those fall plants. What does your yard look like once summer colors start to fade? Do you still have some things that are lovely, or does it turn into a boring, barren wilderness? If your yard leans toward barren, here are a few plants to brighten things up: Trees – For red foliage, you can’t beat maples. In addition, dogwoods, some crape myrtles, and serviceberries have pretty red leaves. If yellow is more your color, go for Gingko (only males please, the females produce seed pods that smell like rotten meat), yellowwood, redbuds, hickory trees, and maples. Shrubs – Burning bush is very popular, but remember to give it some room. It gets quite large. Ditto for Oak Leaf hydrangeas. In addition, Virginia Sweetspire, Cotoneaster, blueberries, Clethra, and Witch Hazel have dazzling leaf color. If you want blooms, Camellias are the way to go. Sasanqua camellias are available with white, pink, or red flowers. They prefer morning sun and afternoon shade, and some can get very large. We have a good selection, so stop by and pick one out. There are also several shrubs that provide interesting berries in the fall. Beautyberry is one of my favorites, but viburnums, cotoneaster, hollies, pyracantha, and nandinas will also provide berries for weeks if not months. It is my sad duty to inform you, however, that there have been recent studies linking nandina berries to bird death. Evidently there are small amounts of cyanide in the berries that can

BY LISA GRUGIN

build up in some bird’s systems. If you need more suggestions for adding color to your fall and winter landscape, please stop by, give us a call, or send us a message. Now for a complete change in subject matter. I have done quite a bit of traveling these last couple of months, and when I am in another part of the country, I love to drive around and look at people’s landscapes. No, not in a creepy way! It seems to me that no matter what part of the country you live in, most people fall into one of five categories of gardener. Here are the types I have come up with: Let’s start with Naked Nellie. This is the homeowner who has bought or built a house and there is no planting whatsoever. The house sticks out like a sore thumb and looks unfinished and barren. Sometimes this is because the person doesn’t know where to start, or sometimes their “pocketbook needs to season,” as my father-in-law would say. Next we have Overplanted Oscar. This homeowner went to the store and bought some cute little plants without checking how big they would be at maturity. (Sometimes this can also happen because a landscaper needed to sell a lot of plants or a builder wanted the landscape to look “finished” as soon as it was planted.) Whatever the reason, Oscar is now forced to spend his weekends pruning or his house will be taken over by plants and he will have to machete his way through a jungle to get to work. Wrong Plant Wilma is our next homeowner. She is related to Oscar. She doesn’t realize that plants have specific needs in order to perform, so she just plants them wherever she feels like it. The plants usually die, struggle, or outgrow their area, and she is very frustrated. There is no rhyme or reason in her organization, so it looks chaotic. Next on the list is Overwhelmed Olivia.

Olivia has bought a house with extensive, high-maintenance landscaping, and now she doesn’t know where to start. We also see this when the spouse or partner who was the gardener in the family passes away or is no longer able to garden. What was once a perfectly manicured landscape is now a wreck. Perfectionist Paul is my final example. Paul has a perfectly manicured landscape and either loves to work in the yard or has a service. He gets frustrated because plants are actual living things that get bugs and diseases and grow beyond the very strict borders that he has allotted for them. Where do you fall on this spectrum? Wherever it is, we can help. Stop by and see

us or bring us some photos so that we can see what you have to work with. We will help you pick the right plant for the right area so that you can have a lovely yard that enhances your home without destroying your budget! We have gotten several shipments of trees, shrubs, and perennials in, as well as everything you need for fall decorating. Stop by and find something wonderful for your home! “I was wiring trains before I could do multiplications!” said Allan Gartner, a member of the club. There seems to be a special joy in taking things apart to figure out how they work and then putting them back together. The operation of these trains is not as easy as it may appear. Many hours go into programming each one of the locomotives, and each one is different. In one of the detailed displays, the unique history of the region plays the starring role. A replica of the communities of Townsend and Walland have been modeled and even include the famous covered bridge and the tannery in Walland. Without the railroad’s influence, these communities would be completely different. The city of Townsend got its start from The Little River Lumber Company, which started hauling lumber out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in the early 1900s. This lumber and the various products related to logging were vital to the community and surrounding area and were shipped across the country to places like Chicago and many other major cities. After the founding of the National Park, it was the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) who was able to utilize these now unused railroad beds and turn them into the hiking trails we know and love throughout the Smokies. Dennis Cherry, one of the members of the MMRC, has been working and playing with model trains for 65 years. The display he has been working on will be the largest by far, with the trains measuring in feet rather than inches. “We all have the scales that we like to work on,” said Dennis. “Garden scale, the big ones, are my specialty and all the wiring that goes with it.” A different scale known as “O” will capture the holiday spirit with its snowcapped hills and scenery. A special holiday train will disappear through tunnels and race across trestles in a North Pole themed display. Having an eye for detail, Don Clark, another member of the MMRC, has diligently worked to create this display and hopes to share his love of model trains with all ages. A special “Boarding Pass” will be included in the admission price to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center ($8 for adults and $6 for children and seniors) on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 9th through January 6th. It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. This experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. The exhibit will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on Sundays from noon to 5 pm. Each day the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer any questions and to show how they run the trains. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit has been made possible by funding from Blount Partnership, East Tennessee Foundation, and donations from Richardson Construction.
