T

he great outdoors, the kind that looks like a postcard and feels like a playground; where every adventure and every turn on a trail dares you to come back to Tennessee for more.

Hiking

Invest in astounding adventures and experience the beauty of Tennessee as a lifetime memory. Tackle the Appalachian Trail. Pit your strength against gentle giants such as Clingmans Dome, Chimney Tops, and Abrams Falls. The lake trail at Standing Stone State Park is brilliantly abloom in spring. Glimpse an early morning great blue heron on a shoreline hike. Trek the six-mile loop in T.O. Fuller State Park, with historic Chucalissa Indian Village and wetlands as a bonus. Tennessee’s lush landscapes offer endless opportunity for avid hikers and climbers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America and is a treasure trove for hikers. From its tallest peaks that reach more than 6,000 feet to its cool, rocky streams, through the forested slopes and shady glens, anywhere the interconnected web of hiking trails; this is the place to experience Appalachia in its wild and beautiful splendor. Hike Andrews Bald, where the steep, paved path to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower veers off to the right, the unpaved Forney Ridge Trail drops down to the left. It is an approximately 3.6-mile out-and-back trail. It’s a relatively easy hike to the bald, but considerably more strenuous getting back. Alum Cave Bluffs Trail winds out to the rocky overhang and is a popular day-hike in the park. This 4.6-mile out-and-back trail is moderately difficult with only a handful of short, steep grades to tackle and well-worth the exertion. Travel to Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area and experience Twin Arches in Oneida. Hike from Pickett Park Highway to these double sandstone arches. Follow the trail to Charit Creek Lodge, located on the six-mile loop, and cool off in the rocky stream. In Knoxville, hikers can explore more than 50 miles of trails and four historic Civil War sites at Baker Creek Bottoms. Montgomery Bell State Park in Burns features natural beauty and family hikes. Various hiking options are open to every guest. The longest hiking trail is 10.4 miles and is destined as an overnight trail. Choose a short day hike ranging from 0.2-mile hikes to 1.7-mile hikes that bring you up close to Made in Tennessee

natural beauty. Big Hill Pond State Park in Pocahontas has nearly 15.5 miles of a single track trail with a tower to climb and a swamp boardwalk almost a half-mile across. Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, with more than 1,200 acres, is home to at least 15 Native American mounds that were used as both burial and ceremonial locations. Hiking trails give guests access to the mounds. Choose from the 2-mile Mounds Great Outer Loop Trail along a paved surface or any of the natural surface hikes: Nature Trail, Earthworks Trail, and Hudson Branch Trail. Fort Pillow State Park in Henning offers a moderate 9-mile hike along the Red Trail. Learn the history of the area thanks to the well-preserved breastworks and reconstructed inner fort. Transport through history as the park offers Civil War artifact viewings along with a cannon and interpretive displays related to the Fort. Tennessee’s waterfall hikes are some of the most popular in the state. Burgess Falls in the Upper Cumberland region is 1.5 miles and classified as moderately strenuous. Greeter Falls is located within South Cumberland State Park in Palmer. The natural area is one of Tennessee’s most scenic wildernesses. The 90-foot Bald River Falls makes its roaring home in the Cherokee National Forest in Tellico Plains and is hailed as one of the greatest waterfalls in the region. The Great Falls in the 883-acre Rock Island State Park is a cascading 30-foot horseshoe. Fall Creek Falls in Spencer is one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States at 256 feet. The waterfalls are located in Tennessee’s largest and most visited state park with 26,000 acres.

Water Adventures

Whether you are in need of a soothing float down the river, or in the mood for a rip-roaring whitewater rafting adventure, the scenic rivers of Tennessee never fail to provide an inspiring experience. More than 50,000 miles of winding, enchanting rivers, and streams, along with more than a half million acres of pristine lakes and eco-diverse marshes, make the Volunteer State a paradise for those drawn to the wonders of water. In West Tennessee, you’ll find the Mississippi River with its endless water adventures. Along the Mississippi River Corridor, you can try your hand at hiking, biking, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and boating. Among the most scenic, Reelfoot Lake, nestled in northwest Tennessee, is famous for its year-round fishing, eagle-viewing, and lakeside dining. Chickasaw National Wildlife Refuge in Ripley lies in the Lower Mississippi River floodplain along the Chickasaw Bluff. Other places for paddling are the Beech River Watershed in Lexington, Natchez Trace State Park in Wildersville, and the big water of Kentucky Lake, where canoeing, kayaking and rafting are part of the fun. Cumberland are rife with opportunities for adventure. Center Hill, Dale Hollow, and Cordell Hull Lakes are great spots for fishing, boating, canoeing, and swimming. Several state parks like Cumberland Mountain, David Crockett, and Rock Island have plenty of water options. Tim’s Ford State Park and Dam, on the headwaters of the Elk River, is another great spot for adventure. The 125-mile Harpeth River Blueway and the Floating Mill Recreation Area, which runs 64 miles up the Caney Fork River, are both wonderlands for outdoor adventurers. The Duck River Blueway has the only Class II rapids on the lower portion of the river. The lakes, rivers, and mountains of East Tennessee are a paradise for boaters, bikers, hikers, and climbers, with a nice dose of horseback riding and zip-lining thrown in. Try the Obed Wild and Scenic River: The name says it all. The Big South Fork, Caney Fork, and Clinch Rivers are other beautiful and exciting places for testing the waters. Boone Reservoir in Northeast Tennessee is one of the best places for kayaking,

suitable for all levels of paddlers. Lakes like Chickamauga and Norris are great for a calm day on the lake, while the Hiwassee and Ocoee River Recreation Areas have some of the most famous whitewater in the nation, called one of “America’s Best Adventures” by National Geographic. You’ll find Class III and IV rapids in several spots, including the Tellico ledges, the middle prong of the Little Pigeon and the Tremont River. Check out the caves at Cumberland Gap National Recreation Area, try a zip line in Pigeon Forge, or explore the hang gliding and rock climbing opportunities in spots like Lookout Mountain or Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If winter sports are your thing, don’t forget the skiing and snowboarding at Ober Gatlinburg. Whatever type of outdoor thrills you seek, Tennessee has it all.

Discover Your Home’s Showcase Kitchen & Bath at Knox Cabinet Co.

W

ith their newly launched Maryville super-showroom and warehouse, Knox Cabinet Co. now offers East Tennessee homeowners two convenient shopping venues where you can discover how to transform virtually every room in your home. Homeowners agree that their home’s kitchen is the most important room in their home. Our kitchens are the center of our family’s day-to-day living and activities. Our day begins in our kitchen with our first cup of coffee and continues on throughout the day as we cook, dine, and socialize in the kitchen with family and friends. With their extensive lines of beautiful and affordable cabinetry for your home’s baths, den, library, and family room, Knox Cabinet Co. can assist you in transforming your dreams into reality. Whether you’re designing a kitchen for your new dream home or re-designing a new kitchen for an existing home, Knox Cabinet Co. will help you discover that showcase quality look that you’ve been searching for. In this issue of Mountain Views, we are excited to introduce you to Knox Cabinet Co. owners and area entrepreneurs, Megan Thomas and her brother, Lane Thomas, and area developer and Synergy Auto Wash owner, Brian Davis. If you are in search of the highest quality kitchen and bathroom cabinetry at near wholesale pricing and a turn-key experience, we know you will enjoy this month’s interview with Megan. MV: What first inspired you to open Knox Cabinet Co. and then your second location in Maryville? Megan: Launching Knox Cabinet Co. seemed liked a natural extension of our combined experiences and talents. We have been buying and remodeling existing homes for resale for many years. During this process, we learned the importance of creating dynamic kitchens and baths in the homes we sold. They became the centerpiece of each successful sale. Although we had a wonderful relationship with our cabinet vendor, we began to search for new cabinet lines that offered more options, yet were still affordable. After discovering several new and exciting cabinet manufacturers, we completed our first showroom on Hardin Valley Road in October 2018. Our second and newest location in Maryville makes shopping for cabinetry just that much more convenient for our customers, not to mention the flexibility offered by our large new warehouse. This expansion has also allowed us to add new lines of cabinetry to ensure that we have the right cabinets at the right price points for all of our customers. We like to refer to both of our showrooms as Discovery Centers, where you can discover all of the possibilities that exist for creating showcase quality kitchens and baths in your home. MV: You have decades of combined residential development, construction, remodeling, and property management experience. How has this helped you at Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: Because we were the customers for so many years, we gained an appreciation for what homeowners shopping for kitchen and bath cabinetry wanted from their cabinet supplier. Our goal is to make your experience of shopping for quality and affordable cabinetry as easy and as seamless as possible, creating for our customers that showcase quality look they are searching for while remaining within their budget. MV: Tell our readers about the many features and benefits of Knox Cabinet Co.’s kitchen and bath cabinetry. Megan: All of our cabinets are built from all wood construction and all drawers are dovetailed. Just a few of the available options include pull-out trash receptacles, microwave cabinets, spice rack pull-outs, and file drawers for starters. But I’m confident that your favorite option will be the multiple stain and paint options and door styles available for you to select from. We can also provide cabinets in your favorite Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams colors. These are truly high-end cabinets at a very affordable price. MV: It would appear that many of the standard features of your cabinets are optional with other cabinet manufactures. Megan: At our price point, you would be correct. Homeowners will find that other comparably priced cabinets do not include the soft-close doors and soft-close dovetailed drawers that we offer as standard features. All of these added features can transform an ordinary kitchen and bath into an extraordinary kitchen and bath. MV: Many homeowners will be surprised by both the quality of your cabinets and your competitive pricing. How is that possible? Megan: Our highest priority from the beginning was to feature top quality, affordable,

all wood cabinetry that offered the options that we knew our customers would want in order to create that quality, custom kitchen and bath look. We then developed a proprietary business model with low overhead, custom design capabilities, and intelligent logistics and warehousing in order to offer this unique value to all of our customers. MV: Share with our readers your turn-key approach, including sales, design, and custom installation. Megan: I believe this is truly another area that distinguishes Knox Cabinet Co. from its competitors. We already understood the retail cabinetry marketplace from the perspective of the customer. We simply set out to redesign the experience to make it easier and more enjoyable for our customers to achieve their dream of creating the look that they envisioned. Next, we designed our showrooms to feature multiple designer created vignettes to help inspire you to discover that showcase quality kitchen and bathroom within your home. With the assistance of one of our designers, we will guide you through every step of the design process, answer all of your questions, offer recommendations, and even offer CAD drawings using our 2020 design software, which can display your proposed layout design on our 65” flat screen monitors in our dedicated conference rooms. As I mentioned before, our goal has been to make things as easy and seamless as possible for our customers. Our showrooms are open Monday through Saturday, and our in-house designers can assist you with really anything you might imagine – whether it’s providing an opinion on selections or laying out your kitchen with our 2020 design software. And our customers especially appreciate the quality craftsmanship provided by our expert installation team and their more than 20 years of experience. MV: Do you also offer a preferred vendor for cabinet countertops? Megan: Because new cabinets typically require new countertops, each of our vignettes feature a variety of solid surface countertops on all our cabinets designed to inspire you. We also have samples displayed throughout our design showroom for your convenience. Should you discover a surface that you love, we can provide pricing and arrange to have our preferred fabricator/installer come to your home to measure, fabricate, and install your countertops once your new cabinets are installed. MV: You offer showroom design services. Do you offer in-home design services as well? “We carefully select all of our vendors and subcontractors Megan: In the home construction and remodeling marketplace, I learned that it is in order to provide our clients with the same high level of often difficult to accurately describe the kitchen or bath design that the homeowner is customer service we would expect if we were the customer. attempting to achieve. In those instances, we offer an in-home design service to enable Without hesitation, we would absolutely recommend Knox our experienced design staff member to see your project firsthand. Sometimes it’s not Cabinet Co. to anyone considering new cabinetry." just about the measurements of the kitchen, but it’s the layout and flow of the rooms - Taya Sharp, Co-Owner of Sharp Design & Construction C A B I N E T c o. adjoining the kitchen, doorways leading to the kitchen, and the style of the house that gives our staff a better perspective when recommending a particular layout, as well as cabinetry options. MV: What is your typical turnaround time for cabinet installation? Megan: While we are primarily focused on quality and service, we understand that time can be of the essence, particularly when your home is under construction. In these DISCOVER YOUR HOME'S SHOWCASE KITCHEN & BATH instances, we have developed a system that, with the help of our preferred contractor, allows us to have cabinets installed in our customers’ homes in far less time then you might imagine. MV: How can our readers learn more about Knox Cabinet Co.? Megan: We’d love for readers to visit one of our two showrooms, which are conveniently located at 10238 Hardin Valley Road in Knoxville and 1414 E. Broadway in Maryville. Our hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm and Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm. Appointments are encouraged and can be made by calling 865-6745669. Readers can also visit our website at www.knoxcabinetcompany.com or check us out on Facebook at Knoxville Cabinet Co. or Instagram at @knoxcabinetcompany. MV: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Megan: We understand that you have many cabinet options to select from, but we would like to encourage your readers to visit one of two our showrooms – even if you are close to making a final decision – to discover the quality of our cabinetry, the wide selection, and competitive pricing available, in addition to our excellent customer service designed to exceed your expectations. Knox Cabinet Co. can also provide your cabinetry needs in your den, library, and family room as well. We challenge you to compare our quality and price and to discover that showcase kitchen and bathroom that is waiting to be discovered in your home. Community Spotlight – Helping Hands Ministry

I

n the spring of 2010, Frank Davis, who was serving as the Executive Director of Habit for Humanity in McMinn County, took note that many of the calls they received for help did not entail building a house. The people who reached out for help had a leaking roof, a bathroom floor that was collapsing, a water heater that was leaking and rotting out the floor around it, and many requests for access ramps. With that in mind, Frank left Habitat for Humanity and began a process to help these homeowners by doing the needed repairs, and so Helping Hands Ministry was formed. Helping Hands Ministry is a non-denominational Christian outreach ministry. Helping Hands Ministry offers assistance to low income homeowners with home repairs and property “spruce up” for widows, veterans, shut-ins, and others who are unable or who do not have the skills or resources to complete or manage the repairs on their own. The ministry serves all of our Heavenly Father’s children who are in temporary need of labor assistance, regardless of race, religion, and ethnicity. Ever since our inception, Helping Hands has been able to make a positive change in the lives of a number of people by making their lives more comfortable and safer. In 2017, 100 families were visited, and it impacted the lives of 231 individuals. In 2018, we visited 93 families and impacted the lives of 213 individuals. The ministry strives to improve the “quality of life” for those who are helped. Helping Hands Ministry depends on grants and other monetary donations to purchase needed supplies to complete the tasks. Donations of building supplies such as wood, shingles, cabinetry, bathroom fixtures, plumbing supplies, etc. are always welcome. The real blessing from something like this comes by volunteering. For those interested, please call 423-920-4179.

Ask Yourself This One Question ... What’s the difference between a buyer’s agent and a seller’s agent? Today’s Tellico Village and surrounding real estate marketplaces are red hot, and most agents have multiple buyers searching for homes. So how can you as a seller take full advantage of this unique opportunity? A buyer’s agent will often tell you that they have multiple buyers who want to buy homes and that is why you should list with them. Simply put, these agents are agents for their buyers. What you need is a seller’s agent. Someone who works for you and looks out for your best interest. I started in 1986 as a seller’s agent working for Cooper Communities and later in 1989 when I started Village Realty. If you have a home to sell, I invite you call me. I will help you price it and market it. Buyer’s agents will try to get you to list at a low price so they can make a quick sale. In today’s market, you should get a price higher than just a few months ago due to the current short supply of inventory. List with me and I will work hard and use my over three decades of experience to get you top dollar for your home and not just a quick sale. ow through October 13, visitors to the Museum of East Tennessee History will have an opportunity to view special items associated with the “Freedom Engine,” a tribute gift from East Tennesseans to New York City following the events of September 11, 2001. East Tennesseans contributed more than $940,000 to purchase and equip a 95-foot tower ladder truck for Harlem-based Ladder Company 14, helping the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) replenish the largest vehicles in the city’s firefighting fleet. The so-called “Freedom Engine” went into service during March 2002 and was dedicated on September 11th of that year. FDNY typically retires their trucks from regular service after about 10 years. The Freedom Engine went into reserve status in 2013. Upon retirement, several artifacts associated with the truck, including a bucket door, captain’s helmet, memorial plaque from the people of East

~ SALON BIZ 2019 ~

The Price is Right

any people may have often wondered just what exactly goes into determining what they pay for their salon services, and this month’s column will touch on a few of those factors. Hair and nail salons are abundant in most every community, but rarely do they have the same price structures, and in many salons, prices on services may vary from provider to provider. The three primary considerations made in determining costs of services are location, market value, and the law of supply and demand.

First is location, and as the old saying goes, “location, location, and location” are three very important ingredients to any successful business. Location has a huge impact on the price of services, simply because the better the location, the higher the overhead of that particular salon will be. Second is the overall market value of the services based on the geographical region. Many of our guests moving here from large metropolitan areas are astonished at the value they find with the price of their salon services.

East Tennessee is able to provide us with that opportunity because of the relatively low costs of living and our affordable taxes. Lastly, the factor that Brian K. Whitehead may actually have the Managing Partner greatest impact on the The Village Salon prices of your salon services is the law of supply The Village Salon and demand. At our salon, 222 Village Square prices may vary from providin Tellico Village er to provider simply because 865-458-9332 of the demand for their time. thevillagesalon@aol.com Oftentimes people who have established successful relationships with their stylists will jealously defend their scheduled visits by booking their appointments well in advance. This type of demand can make the remaining appointments scarce, and as a result, make them more “valuable.” Applying this basic economic law will generally make the price of your service higher for the operators with the greatest demand. Most salons that have been in business for any length of time have figured out the formula for setting their prices, and most operators will strive to provide the best possible quality of service at the most reasonable value. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your stylist or salon owner if you have any questions concerning your salon visits, and as always, thanks for all the ideas for the column topics.

Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is Back at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

L

ast winter the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center unveiled their newest holiday tradition with the Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit, and since that time, the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have been painstakingly busy in their workshops adding intricate details and design elements to the displays. “We have added so many great new things to discover and cannot wait for folks to see all that we have created!” said Allan Gartner, Club President. Everyone, including our spouses, has been getting into the work.” “Getting to see the reactions on the children’s and parents’ faces last year made the all the work and planning well worth it,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “It truly felt like the holidays! The members of the MMRC put so many hours into the preparation and presentation of the exhibit, we

couldn’t be happier with our partnership!” The unique history of the region served as the inspiration behind this seasonal event, and the lumber industry was a key reason for the several communities in Blount County. In the early 19th century, The Little

River Lumber Company started hauling lumber out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This lumber and the various products related to logging were vital to the community and surrounding areas and were shipped across the country to places like Chicago and many other major cities. After the founding of the National Park, it was the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) who was able to utilize these now unused railroad beds and turn them into the hiking trails we know and love throughout the Smokies. After a successful first year, there have been several new additions to the exhibit for this holiday season. One of the new models to see is a replica of the Little River Sawmill that was once located along the Little River in Townsend. More than 90 hours, all volunteered by the MMRC, have been put into this one piece, and it will be completed right before the exhibit opens to the public on Friday, November 8th. The history of the locomotives and lumber in East Tennessee is in H/O scale, which is 1:87, which makes an H/O scale hotel the size of a loaf of bread. With some of the buildings having more than 1,600 parts, the tedious attention to detail is shown in the final product. Another new addition for 2019 is the Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone for kids. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is offering the chance to be creative and enjoy family time with your kids in our brand new, hands-on Train Discovery Zone. Bring out your junior engineers and conductors, as well as your own inner child, to create, design, and build your very own train landscape. The Heritage Center will supply the track, trains, and toys, and you supply the imagination. Complete with multiple building tables, lots of track, trains, and wooden building logs to create your very own miniature village, everyone in your family will be sure to bring out the curiosity and creativity in all generations. The Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone is sponsored by Blount Partnership. The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit and the kids’ Train Discovery Zone will be chugging along on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 8th through January 5th. Admission to the exhibit is included in museum admission ($8 adults, $6 seniors and children ages 6-18). It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. The experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. Each day that the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer questions and to show how they operate the trains. Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors: Blount Partnership, East Tennessee Foundation, Richardson Construction, and Herb Handley. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, which opened in 2006, preserves, interprets, and shares the history and culture of the diverse peoples and Native Americans who have inhabited the Southern Appalachians, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and offers exhibitions and programs for educational and cultural enrichment. It is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization. Located on the “Quiet side of the Smokies” in Townsend, Blount County, the Heritage Center offers gallery exhibits, educational programs, demonstrations, and festivals that guide you on an historic journey through time to visit the diverse cultures of Townsend and Tuckaleechee Cove. With my having to oversee the sale from the Boston area, Jan provided the professional assistance in making sure that all aspects of the sale were presented and communicated clearly and expeditiously. Because of my absence, Jan went out of her way to facilitate all required showings, as well as, when necessary, to coordinate required access to the Townhome for necessary minor repairs and inspections. TV Lions 15th Annual Oktoberfest T 12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2019

he TV Lions will be holding their annual Oktoberfest at the TV Yacht Club on October 7 at 4 pm. Food and beverage service continues until 7 pm. This marks the 15th year in a row that this event has been held. At a Lions Club meeting early in 2004, Lion Mike Kittl, a die-hard Austrian, came up with the idea of having this uniquely German event in Tellico Village. From its first iteration, it has been a huge success and a prime fundraiser for the club. In addition to great German food – bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, beans, condiments, and, of course, plenty of German beer – the Oktoberfest provides a great social evening where you can meet with friends and neighbors and enjoy the evening. You can also dance or sing along to great music, German and other, provided by DJ Steve Bartoleme. Because of its popularity and Yacht Club capacity, tickets are limited, so if you want to join the crowd, get

your tickets early. Priced at $14/person, they are available from any Lion, Sloan’s Home Center, the United Community Bank, and The Village Salon. Because of the crowd and somewhat limited capacity, you can park in

the lot at Tugaloo Pavilion and ride a free shuttle to and from the club. Events such as this provide funds to the Lions Club to support a myriad of activities. These include donations to numerous service organizations focused on visual problem remediation, as well as a program of health and vision screening in local service organizations and schools. A good specific example of the use of funds raised in this and other events is TV Lions Club participation in a Habitat for Humanity house build. This is a joint effort with the Kiwanis, Rotary Club, and Women’s Club all in Tellico Village and the Loudon Lions Club in Loudon. The build is currently commencing at the Hope Haven enclave, off Route 72, of the Loudon County Habitat for Humanity organization. A project such as this and many others is only possible thanks to the fantastic support from the residents of Tellico Village. Thanks and see you at the Oktoberfest!

Restyle Your Fur Event O ur first Restyle Your Fur Event was so successful that we are having another show on October 24th and 25th! Many laughs and memories were a part of our first fur show as we saw mothers and daughters restyle great-grandmothers’ long fur coats into unique, updated pieces they can now enjoy. The furs that are restyled at this upcoming event will be returned in time for Christmas... what a wonderful gift for yourself, your daughter, or granddaughter! Mr. Santa LaBelle, the owner of this 100 year old company, will be in our store for two days personally hosting our restyle event. Let Restyle Your Fur perform an unforgettable “trans-furmation” by having expert furriers: » Convert it into a fabulous vest or 2-in-1 jacket with removable sleeves » Make a cuddly teddy bear, pillow, or throw » Enlarge, downsize, or repair your garment » Create a lightweight reversible fur/silk raincoat » Shear it to update the look Fur is one of the few materials that can be stripped apart and entirely restyled. Beyond alterations, it can be sheared to a short plush, updated to a different style, or, most commonly, added as fur collars, cuffs, or lining for raincoats and everyday coats to add luxury and style. At our Restyle Your Fur event, we will first assess the condition of the fur of your

od’s Work — Our Hands is an annual event of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) as a special time set aside for community service by our congregations. Across the country this fall, nearly 9,300 congregations are engaging in service work to make a positive change in our communities, deepen relationships, and share God’s love. Since 2013, Shepherd of the Lake in Loudon has participated by serving at local community centers, animal shelters, day care and assisted living facilities, and more. This year the volunteers drove to the Second Harvest Food Bank distribution facility in Alcoa to help as needed. As it turns out, our contribution was to help bag individual portions for distribution as part of Second Harvest’s School Pantry program. School Pantries are in counties and schools where the need for food is greatest, where the percentage of students at an economic disadvantage are the highest and where students and their families are underserved through other programs. School Pantries impact some of the most vulnerable children in our communities – children who may be missing meals on a regular basis. Child hunger doesn’t stop when school is not in session. Summer Food for Kids ensures that children are able to bring food home over weekends and school holidays when they are not able to participate in the school programs. Shepherd of the Lake members filled 1,302 bags of cereal for those in need in East Tennessee. That’s 244 pounds! Additional members filled in on Wednesday at Second Harvest in areas they were needed. Last month we were delighted to welcome Seminarian James Trussell, a Second Harvest Food Bank employee, as our guest

preacher. Worship was followed by brunch and a presentation from Elaine Streno, Executive Director at Second Harvest Food Bank. The scope and value of the programs of Second Harvest are astounding. Although celebrating this special day designated by the ELCA, Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church is a hands on church and designates every day to God’s Work – Our Hands. Our members volunteer and participate where needed in both Loudon and Monroe counties on a weekly or daily basis. You’ll find us at the Good Shepherd Center in Madisonville, the Monroe County Animal Shelter, the Neighborhood Assisted Living Facility in Loudon, and at KARM Ministries. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) was formed in 1988 and currently has more than 9,300 congregations and 3.6 million members in all 50 states. Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ, unity among Christians, and service in the world. Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church is located in Tellico Village at 143 Chota Center. Traditional worship service with Holy Communion is at 9 am on Sundays. Clarence Brown Theatre’s New Play, “People Where They Are,” Focuses on Highlander Center Teaching

he world premiere of the CBT-commissioned “People Where They Are” will be performed in the Clarence Brown Theatre’s Carousel Theatre October 2-20. Written specifically for the current UT Theatre MFA actors by Anthony Clarvoe and directed by Calvin MacLean, the play dramatizes the famous Highlander Center’s expansion into the Civil Rights movement and more. Several ancillary events will accompany this production. In 1932, Myles Horton, Don West, Jim Dombrowski, and others founded the Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, Tennessee. They focused first on organizing unemployed and working people, and by the late 1930s, Highlander was serving as the de-facto CIO education center for the region, training union organizers and leaders in 11 southern states. During this period, Highlander also fought segregation in the labor movement, holding its first integrated workshop in 1944. Highlander’s commitment to ending segregation made it a critically important incubator of the Civil Rights movement. Workshops and training sessions at Highlander helped lay the groundwork for many of the movement’s most important initiatives, including the Montgomery bus boycott, the Citizenship Schools, and the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961, after years of red-baiting and several government investigations, the state of Tennessee revoked Highlander’s charter and seized its land and buildings. The school reopened the next day as the Highlander Research and Education Center. From 1961-1971, it was based in Knoxville, and in 1972, it moved to its current location near New Market, Tennessee. According to Clarvoe, all the actions depicted in the play actually happened, and all the characters are based on actual people. But the timeline of events has been rearranged and telescoped and the named characters are amalgams of several different historical figures. MacLean said that when he and the cast began work with the playwright in December 2017, the work of Highlander was largely unknown to them. Clarvoe brought to their attention the historical significance of Highlander and the ironies of its placement in rural East Tennessee. They had no idea that, while working on the play, the eruptions of violence would increase and even visit upon the Highlander Center in New Market. “This new play dramatizes Highlander’s expansion into the Civil Rights movement,” said MacLean. “But it also takes aim at our own time by dramatizing our own ongoing discussions about race, ‘otherness,’ and the eruption of violence our nation has endured since even before we began this particular artistic journey.” MacLean (Director) is in his 14th year as Theatre Department Head and CBT Company Producing Artistic Director. CBT productions he has directed include “A Flea in Her Ear,” “The Life of Galileo,” “The Secret Rapture,” “A Streetcar Named Desire” (with Dale Dickey), “Amadeus” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra), “Kiss Me, Kate,” “Sweeney Todd” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Dale Dickey), “Our Country’s Good,” “The Threepenny Opera,” “The Open Hand,” “The Crucible,” and “Candide” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra). He was the Artistic Director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival for 11 seasons. Professionally active in Chicago, his productions – mostly at the Famous Door Theatre – earned several Joseph Jefferson Awards for Outstanding Production and Direction. Most notable were Joshua Sobol’s Ghetto, a production that ran for seven months and honored with four Jeff Awards, including for Outstanding Direction of a Play and Anthony Clarvoe’s “The Living,” which won Joseph Jefferson Awards for Outstanding Direction of a Play and Outstanding Production. Playwright Anthony Clarvoe has received American

Theatre Critics, LA Drama Critics, Elliot Norton (New England drama critics), SF Bay Area Theatre Critics, Will Glickman, Garland, and Edgerton New American Play awards; fellowships from the Guggenheim, Irvine, Jerome, and McKnight Foundations, National Endowment for the Arts, TCG/Pew Charitable Trusts, and Kennedy Center; commissions from South Coast Rep, Mark Taper Forum, and Playwrights Horizons; the Berrilla Kerr Award for his contributions to American theater; and many others. The Chicago production of his play “The Living,” directed by Cal MacLean, produced by Famous Door Theatre, won three Joseph Jefferson Awards, including Production of the Year. He lectures on theater history at UC Berkeley and leads playwriting classes in Oakland. A native San Franciscan and long-time resident of New York and the Midwest, he lives with his family in Berkeley, CA. Dee Dee Battest (Co-Director) is a Chicago based actress, director, and teacher. She performed last year at the CBT in Detroit ’67. She received her undergraduate degree from Ball State University and her MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill. The UT Theatre MFA actors performing in this play are Aleah Vassell (Mrs. Clark), Owen Squire Smith (Mr. Carawan), Brittany Marie Pirozzoli (May), Brenda Orellana (Emma), Collin Andrews (Ned), and Jade Arnold (John). The creative team for the production includes John Merritt (Costume Design), Carrie Ferrelli (Scenic Design), Mike Ponder (Sound Design), Bill Miller (Lighting Design), Kathy Logelin (Dialect Coach), Casey Sams (Choreographer/Intimacy Coach), and Dane Urban (Stage Manager). Following each “People Where They Are” performance, patrons will have the opportunity to make voluntary donations support the Highlander Center. The Pay What You Can performance is Wednesday, October 2, at 7:30 pm. Half of the proceeds from the PWYC tickets sales will benefit the Highlander also. Behind the Scenes Sunday is October 2 following the 2 pm matinee. It will include a panel discussion with the playwright, director, and co-director, who will discuss what it takes to create a new play

or the 11th consecutive year, the Knoxville Opera brought glorious music and voices to the intimate setting of Rarity Bay Country Club (RBCC). The performance was paired with a three-course plated meal prepared by the club’s culinary team. Every year the RBCC looks forward to offering this exclusive event for residents of Rarity Bay. The program featured highlights from Knoxville Opera’s season, including selections from their extensive programming: Opera 101, Knoxville Opera Goes to Church, Madame Butterfly, Christmas Holiday Concert, Romeo and Juliet, and Harriet Tubman: When I Crossed That Line to Freedom. A big thank you to the Rarity Bay Ad Hoc Opera Committee for helping plan and organize this unique event.

and will delve into the themes of social activism present in the production. An Actor Talkback will take place on Sunday, October 13, following the matinee performance. A Highlander Benefit Concert will take place October 19 at 2 pm, featuring inspirational folk music by Michael and Carrie Kline. Michael served as a staff musician for the Highlander from 1968-1969, and they both have been studying Appalachian community culture and history for more than 40 years. The concert is free and open to the public with another opportunity to donate to the Highlander Center. A Sunday Symposium with Wess Harris will take place on October 20 following the 2 pm matinee performance. A sociologist and former coal miner and union organizer from West Virginia, Harris will recount his experiences with one of the co-founders of the Highlander, Don West. He also will shed light on his journey of collecting portraits created by another co-founder of the Highlander, Connie West, which were done to depict influential individuals of the Highlander. Select portraits, which echo the themes and characters present in our production, will be on display in the lobby of the theater. Harris also will be on hand October 9 through 20 to talk about the portraits and to sell his books, “Written in Blood: Courage and Corruption in the Appalachian War of Extraction” and “When Miners March.” For tickets to “People Where They Are,” call the Clarence Brown Theatre box office at 865-974-5161 or order online at www.clarencebrowntheatre.com. Steve Lukather by

A

nyone who has read Boomerocity or any of the publications that have ran abridged versions of our interviews knows that Toto’s Steve Lukather is one of our favorite guys to hang and/or chat with. We’ve interviewed him five times and have met him in person three times. When you chat with him, he’s a blowtorch of unvarnished truth and can string words together in a way that will have your sides hurting from laughing almost non-stop. Whenever we get a chance to chat with him, we jump at the chance. One such chance arose with the band’s release of their CD/DVD, Forty Trips Around the Sun – a video chronicle of Toto’s 40th anniversary tour a couple of years ago. I also wanted to talk with Lukather about Toto’s current tour that stops at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on October 8th. Reached at his home in Southern California, Lukather and I chatted, wherein he shared about the rigors of life on the road. He was quite philosophical about it. “I chose this life, and a lot of people don’t realize that it is an incredibly lonely life,” he said. “People think, ‘How could you be lonely, playing in front of tens of thousands of people every night?’ It’s very easy, actually, when you go from the highest highs to the lowest lows in the period of an hour. Very strange to go from the stage – that’s the rush. That’s what we all live for. We don’t get paid for that. That’s the fun part. We get paid for the other 20 hours of the day that we sit in a room. After doing it for most of my life, I just kind of hang in the room. Read. Try to find myself before the dirt nap hits.” When we last spoke, Lukather had just released his autobiography, The Gospel According to Luke. I asked him how the book did and is currently doing. “That thing has had a life of its own,” he said. “I had no idea! The most random people tell me they’ve read the book or they’re reading the book. I get a message from somebody. It’s still going, man. They’re after me to do number two now – continue the story. Talk a lot more about

my session life and certain records that I did in more detail. I got a million stories. I mean, I had 400 pages hit the floor. So I’m going to have to have the New Testament, right? Have the New Testament.” Lukather then went on to talk about the “40 Trips” CD/DVD. “Boy, what an excursion that has been in terms of… a real bad time for us – all but destroyed everything. And you know, that’s a tough pill to swallow, and that’s why it’s taken so long to get this DVD out, because we were held by hostage by somebody who’s evil, and we had to live through that.” After summarizing the legal hassles the band encountered to get the project out, Lukather concluded: “So we had no choice. We didn’t mean to do that, but we got held up at the last minute. As per someone who hates you that much, likes to plan that way. And then for reasons unknown, and we don’t even know what it was all about. You spent so much money. I wish I had the money we spent. But that’s the whole of the story. It’s been a whole betrayal. It just got tough. But I don’t want to get into that too heavily, because it’s just another reason to sue me, because I breathe. Sue me because I breathe. We actually recorded it and filmed it a yearand-a-half, two years ago when we started this 40 trips tour.” Here’s what fans can expect from the CD/DVD: “It’s a great snapshot of living for four years,” said Lukather. “I’m glad Paige is in it, because Dave’s not – you know, his health is not great. He’s 65, and he is pretty much is done touring, you know? What can fans expect from this tour? “We’re going to give it the best we’ve got,” said Lukather. “We’re fine. We just want to get through this and have a great time doing it. We’ve had an incredible run of this. I mean, the band’s going to go out on top of the world.” There is much more to this conversation than space here allows. Read about Lukather’s family, Ringo Starr’s new LP, and much more at www.boomerocity.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

ake homes are specialty properties. People selling or buying these homes benefit from a real estate agent who is a lake market specialist. The very best of these agents marries their local expertise with highly targeted market reach to lake home buyers and sellers across the country. For more than 20 years, Karen Packett has served the local communities on Fort Loudon and Tellico Lakes. Karen doesn’t just work in those areas – she lives there. “I’ve lived here my whole life,” said Karen. “So beyond knowing where the best fishing holes are and what parts of the lakes are best for tubing, I’m intimately familiar with the many fantastic communities located here in our area.” Karen’s expertise needed the perfect brokerage partner to realize her full potential. “I’ve seen them all!” said Karen. “When I decided to focus my efforts on lake-focused real estate, I knew which brokerages were not marketing focused and would not make good partners. When I found Lake Homes Realty, it was a game-changer for my clients and me!” Lake Homes Realty is a new type of hybrid real estate brokerage. The company owns LakeHomes.com, which is the country’s most popular lake-focused real estate website. The company is also a traditional local real estate brokerage in the 26 states where it operates. The website allows buyers to search more than 85,000 lake real estate properties for sale on more than 3,000 lakes and attracts more than three million visitors annually! That’s important because most

buyers of lake real estate are not local. Atlanta, Dallas, and New York are the top feeder markets for our local lakes. Buyers tend to be age 45 or older and are looking for a second home or a great community in which to retire. Whether you’re selling or buying, LakeHomes.com provides you with a reliable marketing platform to assist you. Creating an account allows you to save properties of interest, be notified of price changes, and offers searches for similar properties on one lake or hundreds of lakes. Plan the Perfect Pantry

D

id you know pantries weren’t always an essential part of a kitchen? During the post-WWII building boom from 1946 to 1960, pantries fell out of favor. Architects thought the new built-in cabinetry and the convenience of local supermarkets had made pantries unnecessary in the modern kitchen. Well, today’s pantries are bigger in size than ever. And while size does matter, organization is usually more important than size alone. A well-designed small pantry often provides better, more convenient, and functional storage than a poorly designed large pantry. No matter its size, today’s pantry should be: » Convenient – Located at or near the area where food is prepared. » Visible – Everything in the pantry can be seen at a glance. » Accessible – Every Slide-out spice racks and baskets item can be easily reached add welcomed convenience in a pantry. and removed without having to move anything else out of the way. Heaviest items, like a mixer, close to the floor and least used items at the highest point. When designing the layout of your pantry, Tailored Living believes what works best for the homeowner is a design that fits their lifestyle. Our designers will discuss with you how you want to utilize your pantry. Some of the questions our designer may ask are: » What will be in the pantry besides food? Do you want to store dishes, serve ware, table linens, grilling items, or cleaning supplies in the space? » Do you entertain a lot and need to store party supplies? » Do you have a specific design style in mind? » If you have the space, do you want a countertop – often called a landing area – to put bags of groceries on or, if there’s an outlet in the pantry, everyday items like a coffee maker? Other pantry elements to consider are drawers or pullout baskets. Incorporating baskets makes it easy for kids to see and get the food they like to eat or to store largebulk items like onions or potatoes. Drawers are perfect for linens, grilling utensils, napkins, or any smaller items. Slide-out spice and wine racks add convenience. How much you’re able to customize depends on the size of your pantry. Whether your pantry provides a walk-in space or is a reach-in, Tailored Living of Knoxville listens to your individual or family’s needs to design a space that works well for your lifestyle. Our job is to design and install a well-organized pantry that brings order to chaos. Tailored Living featuring PremierGarage 865-947-8686 www.TailoredLivingKnoxville.com

Iron Works Grille on The River

D

oug Morris, a former pilot with Delta Air Lines, discovered Tellico Plains about a decade ago while pursuing his passion for motorcycles. During one of his many trips, Doug fell in love with the area and decided to make Tellico Plains his home. He launched a cabin rental business in 2014 while contemplating the opening of a restaurant on the scenic Tellico River. Joined by his partner, Mary Spencer, the owner of an ad specialty company in Auburn, Alabama, Doug and Mary purchased the vacant restaurant on the Tellico River, formerly home to another popular area restaurant, Cardin’s Landing. The new restaurant, named Iron Works Grille on The River, opened in April of this year. “We chose the name Iron Works Grille on The River due to its close proximity to a historical site located less than 100 yards from the restaurant,” said Mary. “Known as the Tellico Iron Company, the iron works provided munitions to the Confederate Army during the Civil War.” “This area is rich in history, as it was also an important center of Cherokee culture,” said Doug. “When we first opened, we intentionally limited the menu,” said Mary. “We believed it was better to offer a few items done right. We listened carefully to our customers and expanded our menu offerings by introducing many of your traditional Southern favorites.” Savor their gourmet burgers, sandwiches, and salads while enjoying more than 300 feet of pristine and serene Tellico River frontage. Also, be sure to ask about their already famous and original bacon wrapped “Wickles Pickles” and homemade pork rinds available in five flavors with their homemade ranch dressing. Y

ou’re watching what you eat, you’re staying active, but you’re still unhappy with your body shape. Sound familiar? That stubborn problem area on your waistline can be annoyingly resistant to diet and exercise. That’s where the truSculpt® 3D procedure can help. Developed by Cutera, the global pioneer in performance and innovation within the cosmetic and aesthetic laser device field, the non-invasive, truSculpt® 3D procedure can help you sculpt your body by quickly and easily targeting both large and small problem areas. We recently interviewed J. Kevin Buchanan, MD, Knoxville area’s family practice physician and truSculpt® 3D practitioner, to discover just how this revolutionary, new, state-of-the-art medical breakthrough can help patients treat those problem areas around their midsections. MV: Dr. Buchanan, truSculpt® 3D uses radio frequency technology to help decrease circumference and diminish fat in patients. Tell our readers just how this technology works. Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D uses conductive radio frequency to achieve selective and effective disruption of the subcutaneous fat tissue, the fat that lies directly beneath the skin, while maintaining comfortable surface temperatures. MV: Just how safe is truSculpt® 3D? Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D, which is FDA cleared, is a safe, non-invasive body sculpting technology, where the temperature of the skin and subcutaneous tissue are maintained at comfortable levels while consistently achieving the best results.

HALF THE COST OF COOLSCULPTING Abdomen & Flanks: $1,000 Neck & Chin: $300 Arms: Starting at $500 Legs: Starting at $500

Dr. Buchanan: Clients can expect fat reduction of targeted areas of up to 24%.

TIS' (ALMOST)

MV: Is it possible to treat more than one problem area per session? Dr. Buchanan: Yes, it is possible to treat multiple areas in a single session, including the neck, upper arms, abdomen and flanks, back, and thighs. MV: Should clients experience any discomfort or downtime after the procedure? Dr. Buchanan: Some clients may experience some redness of the skin that typically resolves itself in 8 to 12 hours. Others report soreness of the treatment area that may last for a few days. There is no restriction on activity following the procedure. MV: Treatments are administered by an NP or medical assistant under your personal supervision, correct? Dr. Buchanan: We have a nurse practitioner, two medical assistants, and myself who are all trained and certified to perform the truSculpt® 3D procedure. MV: How can our readers who are interested learn more about the truSculpt® 3D? What is the best way to reach you? CBD Choice

4B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2019

C

By Ellen Phillips, Owner of believeRX

BD (cannabidiol oil) is one of many cannabinoids found in cannabis. Cannabis is the genus name for both marijuana and hemp. Today’s CBD comes from the hemp plant, which is rich in CBD while having negligible THC. CBD Types

» Full Spectrum (Whole Plant) – Contains all hemp cannabinoids, as well as terpenes (essential oil with healing properties) plus trace amounts of THC. CBD and terpenes produce the entourage effect, which results in a variety of health and wellness benefits. Third party labs include a terpene profile, which shows the levels of each terpene in the product. Do not use full spectrum if drug testing is a concern. » Broad Spectrum – Cannabinoids plus terpenes but no THC. These products have been processed to the isolate form, then have additional cannabinoids and terpenes added in. When CBD has a strength, it’s the amount in the entire bottle. For example, 100mg has 100mg CBD per container, not per piece. » Isolate – Pure CBD that has been isolated from the rest of the hemp plant up to 99.8%. The crystalline isolate CBD powder is usually in a carrier oil like MCT oil. Oil Types » Regular – Traditional oil good as an oral drop or mixed with food. » MCT Oil – Extracted from coconut oil and mixed with honey. Good when cooked, as an oral drop, or mixed with food. » CBD Honey Tincture – Mixed with honey and good when cooked, mixed with food, and as an oral drop. » Hemp Seed Oil – Hemp seed is a natural source of protein that contains polyunsaturated and omega fatty acids, vitamin E, and antioxidants. » Olive Oil – Can be added to salads or foods. The source of CBD is extremely important. Know where the product comes from. CBD from China is low potency and sometimes contaminated. Pick products grown in the United States. Extraction Method

Now Open!

The best extraction method is CO2 Extraction, which preserves all of the naturally occurring benefits found in the hemp plant. There are some cheap CBD companies that extract CBD with toxic solvents like propane, hexane, or butane, which is extremely hazardous. CBD should never make someone high. Even though hemp contains small amounts of THC (the chemical in marijuana that makes someone feel high), hemp and marijuana are two different plants altogether. How can people make sure they are buying the best CBD oil? 1. Read the label and make sure you know what is in the bottle. 2. Find a company that provides independent lab testing on their products and that makes it readily available to their customers. 3. Some companies have a customer experience team available to answer questions. 4. Third party lab testing-the lab checks for potency and for residual solvents and heavy metals. You can call the lab to verify if the report is real. 5. Do they have a current website? More important, does the brand have a website? Look for an address, email, and phone number. Search the address online to make sure it matches the company’s location. 6. Public feedback – A company’s reputation is very important. Don’t just believe ratings on their website; check other sites for negative information. Seek out news articles of police raids where the product might be mentioned. 7. Sourcing – Who is producing the hemp? Hemp from China tends to be low quality and high in heavy metals. 8. Transparency – If a brand has their own farm, are they willing to discuss harvesting and processing practices? Would they be willing to let you visit the corporate office? You don’t have to go that far, but transparency and being willing to communicate with customers is very important. 9. Synthetics – If you see a report that a product has even a hint of synthetic cannabinoids, steer clear. If a product gets someone high, there is a big chance that it contains synthetics. believeRX 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865-214-6672 www.mybelieveRX.com

The Only Things in Life That Are Certain

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes.” It’s kind of true, actually. And my job is to make sure that the “tax” part is kept to a minimum. There are actually several different types of tax triggered at someone’s passing, including estate tax and income tax. Under the current tax code, estate tax only comes into play if you have more than $11.4 million in assets, so for the vast majority of us, it doesn’t apply. But income tax is another story, and that depends on what type of account is inherited and whether beneficiaries have been named or not. Bank accounts and non-retirement invest-

ment accounts are not taxable to your heirs. They get a “step-up” in tax basis, meaning any unrealized gains are wiped away, and the inherited assets have a new, stepped up basis. Accounts are retitled into the heirs’ names and they’re done. Easy enough. Pre-tax retirement accounts: These are the MOST complicated accounts to inherit by far. They are taxable to your heirs as they receive distributions. Spouses have the unique ability to combine an IRA with their existing IRA and continue as if they always owned the account. They use their own age for Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules and wait until age 70½ to begin taxable withdrawals. Non-spouse beneficiaries can take a

lump sum distribution, or withdraw the balance over five years, or transfer the balance into an Inherited IRA and begin taking RMDs based on their age. The most tax-advantageous method is to set up an Inherited IRA. But many times beneficiaries don’t understand these options and inadvertently take a fully taxable lump sum distribution. In that unfortunate circumstance, almost 40% of your hard-earned retirement account could go to the IRS rather than to your heirs. An integral part of financial planning is ensuring that all beneficiaries are properly named, accounts are property titled, and your estate planning structure is in place to avoid accidental taxation at your passing. If your financial professional isn’t talking

to you about this critical topic, you should be talking to us instead. Call or email to set your complimentary meeting today. Deep Cleaning INSIDE and OUT Is What Surface Doc Is All About!

6B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2019

M

By Christina Fitzwilliam

ost of us have dealt with dingy tile and stained grout. How about traffic patterns in our carpet? Many of us also deal with algae, mildew, or mold streaking roofs and siding. Another common frustration is discolored driveways and walkways or moss-covered brick pavers. I could go on, but I’m sure you get the picture! If your tough spots are inside the home, you may have realized by now that traditional sweep and mop techniques don’t work for long. What you may not know is that the more you clean tile and grout, the dingier it begins to appear. This is simply because mopping can’t get to the soil load located within your floors. It takes a combination of high heat, high pressure, and high suction to get to any dirt embedded under the surface. To make matters worse, the more you mop, the deeper the soil embeds itself into the pores of your floor! Carpets can be equally frustrating! No matter how much you vacuum, your carpets will eventually show soil build-up in all of your traffic patterns. To effectively remove all the soil from your carpet requires specific tools that sanitize while leaving no chemical trace behind, as chemicals and cleaning solutions simply attract more dirt. If your problem areas are outside, perhaps you’ve tried to pressure wash on your own. Sadly, traditional pressure washing actually cause harm as they pit your concrete and damage your stucco or siding. To clean safely and effectively, the perfect combination of pressure and green chemicals must be used. For roofs and your home’s exterior, a professional SOFT wash is the only way to remove

algae, mildew, and soil. If this is done incorrectly, your home’s exterior will be permanently damaged. Every home presents its own distinctive challenges and requires professional knowledge and service so destruction can be prevented. There is no one-size-fits-all cleaning technique. Since every problem has a unique solution, why not call someone who specializes in each element

re you looking for a well-behaved older companion? Oreo is a 7-year-old shih tzu-mix dog who is looking for his furever home. At 14 pounds, he is just the right size for snuggling. He is blind but gets around just fine. Oreo is part of the Second Chance Pals program, which partners with the shelter to help get older dogs adopted. Adopting a senior dog has many advantages. Senior dogs at shelters need homes just as badly as younger dogs. Many older dogs were once owned and loved by someone. For whatever reason, they were given up and abandoned in a shelter and need a home. Just like puppies and younger adoptable dogs, they make loyal and loving companions. Older dogs usually come trained and understand at least basic commands. Most older dogs are potty trained and have mastered the basic commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “down.” Adopting an already-trained dog will save you a lot of time and energy that you’d normally have to dedicate towards training a young dog. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Dogs can be trained at any age, and older dogs are just as smart as younger ones. Older dogs have a greater attention span than a puppy, which make them easier to train. Older dogs are calmer and less energetic than younger dogs. An adult dog has graduated from the puppy stage and has an established demeanor and temperament. Older dogs have all their adult teeth and are out of the energetic puppy phase, which will result in less destruction to your home. Many of them do well with young children as they have a lower energy level and have possibly lived with them in their past homes. Older dogs make instant companions. Unlike a puppy, which requires leash training, etc., an older dog is ready to accompany you on a long walk and already knows how to play fetch. An adult dog will make a great workout partner, a loyal companion, and a

late night snuggle buddy. Dolan is the sweetest, most mellow guy at the shelter. He is a 46 pound mixed breed brown and white boy and about seven years old. Dolan loves other dogs, children, long walks on a leash, and just life in general. If you are looking for a chilled-out companion to travel or just hang out with, Dolan is the dog for you. Dolan is neutered and ready to roll if you would like to come and meet him. Dolan has many friends who are also at the shelter, waiting for furever homes. Beau is a medium size mixed Australian Shepherd with a huge grin. He is about three years old but still has a puppy personality. Beau is housebroken and can be crated if you are home; however, he will bark if he is crated with no one home. He is fully grown at 37 pounds and has a beautiful full black/white merle colored coat. Beau is a healthy and happy boy who is looking for someone to love him. Looking for something to do to get out of the heat? Come visit the MCFA Thrift Store run by volunteers of the Monroe County Animal Friends of Animals (MCFA). It’s located at 3949 Highway 411 in Madisonville (across from Kentucky Fried Chicken). If you haven’t been there for a while, you might be missing out on some tremendous bargains. New merchandise arrives daily and is priced to move. All proceeds go to help the homeless animals of Monroe County. Shopping hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm, and worker volunteers are

always in high demand. Like us on Facebook for upto-date sale information. For more information, call 423-420-3423. The Monroe County Animal Shelter is always looking for volunteers. Some of the “jobs” available are walking the dogs, caring for the cats, petting/socialization, bathing/grooming, help with rescues, fostering, transporting the animals to other shelters, clerical work, photography (especially of the animals to help them get adopted), communications (newsletters, fliers, etc.), and the Thrift Store. We know you’re an animal lover (that’s why you read this article every month!), so why not use your talents to help us out? Monroe County Animal Shelter is now partnered with Finding Rover, a free service that helps reunite lost dogs and cats with their families using facial recognition technology. As a partner, the community can now see if their lost pet is in our care with just a few clicks. We encourage everyone to register with a personal Finding Rover account by going to www.FindingRover.com. Please consider offering a foster home to help the pets at Second Chance Pals (SCP), a program of Monroe County Friends of Animals. These foster homes help older and/or sick pets that need more assistance than the usual homeless pet. They often cannot be treated until they have a foster home commitment where they can safely stay until their recovery needs are met. Garages:

A Valuable Part of Your House

G

one are the days of a dirty, oil-stained, and cracked garage floor. Today’s garage floor coatings leave the garage looking like a showroom. Garage floors have a hard life. They are subject to constant pressure from the car and hot tires as you drive over them, as well as temperature extremes and abuse from oil drips and substances brought in on your tires. As a result, the concrete often ends up cracking and crumbling. There are a few flooring options to protect your concrete; however, not all floor coatings are created equal. The decision usually comes down to a choice between a standard epoxy or PremierOne’s polyurea coating, developed and installed by PremierGarage. “There have been many improvements in coating technology during the past 20 years, and the preferred garage flooring is our polyurea coating,” said Brain Falls, co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville. “Polyurea is a hard wearing coating that’s widely specified in commercial settings where failure is not an option and floors are designed to last the test of time.” Polyurea flooring systems present the most-advanced, fast-curing, and hardening system in concrete flooring technology. It withstands more abuse and impact than any traditional epoxy coating. It also provides better protection against harmful agents like oils, chemicals, and gas, and it doesn’t stain, crack, or peel. PremierGarage’s polyurea floor coating will look new for years to come. While do-it-yourself epoxy kits are widely available and easy to work with, the downside is many things can go wrong when applying the coating. The epoxy may not set properly or have a weak bond to the concrete, and it takes a long time for the epoxy to dry and bond to the floor. And while the cost of epoxy is initially less expensive, epoxy also quickly delaminates when a vehicle’s hot tires bond to the surface and peel it away from the concrete. For the longest lasting concrete floor coating in the market, PremierGarge technicians diamond-grind the floor to the ideal surface condition to achieve a permanent chemical bond. Other benefits of PremierGarage’s professionally installed flooring coating instead of epoxy is: » Superior finish that cures two times harder, eliminating unsightly marks, peeling, or blistering from hot tires and abrasions » Chemical, UV, stain, and slip-resistant » Commercial-grade product that is guaranteed for 10 years » Easy to clean Available in a variety of colors, the flooring system is also perfect for concrete flooring in basements and retail stores. Call PremierGarage and discover the affordability of transforming your garage floor. Home really does begin in the garage! October in the Garden

T

he calendar says fall, but the temperatures while I write this still say summer! This is posing some problems, so let’s address those first. Number one: It is terribly dry, and October is typically our driest month. This means that you are going to HAVE to water well, or your plants are going to die. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because you need to get water 12” into the soil at least once a week, preferably twice during this drought. (As a guideline, I’m putting five gallons on smaller shrubs, 10 on trees and large shrubs.) You can’t do that with a sprinkler! Hand water or use a drip line. Number two: Some of your plants probably look like crap. This doesn’t mean they are dead. Many deciduous trees and shrubs are losing so much water through evaporation that they can’t pull it from the roots fast enough. The leaves are going to dry up and fall off. Some will try to replace them, and other plants will just decide that they are done for the year. As long as your branches are flexible, they will most likely come back out next spring. You still need to water them! The same is true for perennials. Some of mine have gone completely dormant, but I know from experience that they will come back. Number three: Yes, fall is still a good time to plant. We just have to push the timing back a little. The temperatures in October are great for planting, but it is dry as a bone (see #1). This means that for trees and shrubs, November has now become the star month. We usually start get-

(85% of root growth comes during fall and winCamellias are one of my favorites, and we just got a ter.). Perennials, grasses, and crepe myrtles prefer to go in new load, so let’s start there. The Camellia Sasanqua is while the ground is warm, so you need to plant those now a fall bloomer and tends to be a little less temperamental and just be prepared to water. than the Japonica, which blooms in the spring. The blooms Let’s talk about fall color. Most of you know the obvi- will last for several weeks. Camellias prefer morning sun, ous tree choices (maple, gingko, dogwoods, crepe myr- afternoon shade, and acidic soil. There is a new line from tles), so let’s talk about shrubs. Southern Living that stays a bit smaller, so the size range is 4’ to 20’. Most bloom white, pink, or red. A few have variegated blooms. They are all beautiful. I also love my Oakleaf Hydrangeas, which turn a deep burgundy in the fall. Even after the leaves drop, the shape and bark of the plant is lovely. Burning bush, Virginia Sweetspire, Cotoneaster, and blueberries also turn red. For yellow shades, try Clethra, Forsythia, or witch hazel. What if you are looking for berries? Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t forget viburnums, cotoneaster, hollies, Pyracantha (watch those thorns), and good ole Nandinas. (Side note on Nandina: Those berries that we have been growing for the birds actually contain cyanide. While the quantity is small, if a bird consumes enough, it will kill it. We no longer carry the Nandina domestica because of this.) Mahonia also has a good berry set in the fall and winter. There are also some perennials that either bloom in the fall or keep their foliage. Anemones, Joe Pye weed, Sedums, and Turtlehead bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers such as Coreopsis, Coneflowers, Black Eyed Susan, and Russian Sage often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the perennials that are evergreen! Dianthus, some Sedums, Lenten Rose, Heuchera, and Candytuft are just a few that stick around for the winter months. Grasses also add color and movement through the ugly months. As for annuals, you can’t beat a pansy for color. Plant them now and they will last until next May! They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good. I will finish by reminding you that there are a few chores that need to be done in the fall: 1. Clean up your flower beds. You can choose to leave plants that provide seeds for the birds but get fallen leaves and debris up so that fungal spores and insects don’t overwinter in them. This is especially critical if you had disease and insect problems. 2. Pull or spray any weeds and then apply a pre-emerSHOWER DOOR SPECIAL gent to keep them from coming back. 3. Keep harvesting cool season veggies and herbs along with any pumpkins, squash, and gourds that are still on the vine. ANY PIVOT HINGE, 4. Mulch bare areas to help keep the weed population down and the temperature and water levels stable. HEAVY GLASS 5. Don’t forget the birds! Keep those feeders clean and SHOWER DOOR full. If you have a birdbath that can remain outside, keep it clean and full also. Otherwise, clean it and store it for CLINTON GLASS 9007 Middlebrook Pike • Knoxville the winter. 865-247-0404 Please call or stop by if you have any questions. Don’t With this coupon. Tremont Institute Connects People with Nature Through Monarch Tagging in Cades Cove

reat Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont is connecting people with nature through its popular monarch tagging project in Cades Cove this fall. Monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico every year for the winter, and Tremont Institute uses tagging as a way to learn more about their migration and population status. Tremont has been tagging monarchs and inventorying other butterfly species for many years. Popular with participants of all ages, this program allows volunteers to spend time in sunny fields in Cades Cove with butterfly nets. Participants use field guides to identify the species they find. Choose the Best for Investing in a Home!

P

urchasing a home is one of the largest investments you’ll make, and selecting a real estate agent and mortgage loan officer who strive for excellence is an important part of the process. “There’s so much more involved than most people realize, and it’s important to work with professionals who stay on task and pay attention to detail,” says Aleex Conner, Realtor for Realty Executives Associates. A typical real estate transaction can involve as many as 35

people with buyers, sellers, realtors, mortgage loan officers, underwriters, title companies, appraisers, home inspectors, repair technicians, home service providers, pest inspectors, and movers! Juggling these entities takes patience and skill in working with different personalities to meet the deadlines and close the deal successfully. “If something goes sideways – which can easily happen with so many people involved – I guide you through the process and help resolve the issues,” says Aleex. The first step in starting the home buying process is to get

There are so many different loan options, such as a first-time home buyer’s loan or a rural development loan, and a thorough assessment of all the factors that impact the borrowing process is essential for both your short- and long-term goals. “Allow me to be your trusted advisor as you make one of life’s biggest decisions in purchasing a home,” says Lorie.
