Hiking

Invest in astounding adventures and experience the beauty of Tennessee as a lifetime memory. Tackle the Appalachian Trail. Pit your strength against gentle giants such as Clingmans Dome, Chimney Tops, and Abrams Falls. The lake trail at Standing Stone State Park is brilliantly abloom in spring. Glimpse an early morning great blue heron on a shoreline hike. Trek the six-mile loop in T.O. Fuller State Park, with historic Chucalissa Indian Village and wetlands as a bonus. Tennessee’s lush landscapes offer endless opportunity for avid hikers and climbers. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America and is a treasure trove for hikers. From its tallest peaks that reach more than 6,000 feet to its cool, rocky streams, through the forested slopes and shady glens, anywhere the interconnected web of hiking trails; this is the place to experience Appalachia in its wild and beautiful splendor. Hike Andrews Bald, where the steep, paved path to the Clingmans Dome Observation Tower veers off to the right, the unpaved Forney Ridge Trail drops down to the left. It is an approximately 3.6-mile out-and-back trail. It’s a relatively easy hike to the bald, but considerably more strenuous getting back. Alum Cave Bluffs Trail winds out to the rocky overhang and is a popular day-hike in the park. This 4.6-mile out-and-back trail is moderately difficult with only a handful of short, steep grades to tackle and well-worth the exertion. Travel to Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area and experience Twin Arches in Oneida. Hike from Pickett Park Highway to these double sandstone arches. Follow the trail to Charit Creek Lodge, located on the six-mile loop, and cool off in the rocky stream. In Knoxville, hikers can explore more than 50 miles of trails and four historic Civil War sites at Baker Creek Bottoms. Montgomery Bell State Park in Burns features natural beauty and family hikes. Various hiking options are open to every guest. The longest hiking trail is 10.4 miles and is destined as an overnight trail. Choose a short day hike ranging from 0.2-mile hikes to 1.7-mile hikes that bring you up close to Made in Tennessee

natural beauty. Big Hill Pond State Park in Pocahontas has nearly 15.5 miles of a single track trail with a tower to climb and a swamp boardwalk almost a half-mile across. Pinson Mounds State Archaeological Park, with more than 1,200 acres, is home to at least 15 Native American mounds that were used as both burial and ceremonial locations. Hiking trails give guests access to the mounds. Choose from the 2-mile Mounds Great Outer Loop Trail along a paved surface or any of the natural surface hikes: Nature Trail, Earthworks Trail, and Hudson Branch Trail. Fort Pillow State Park in Henning offers a moderate 9-mile hike along the Red Trail. Learn the history of the area thanks to the well-preserved breastworks and reconstructed inner fort. Transport through history as the park offers Civil War artifact viewings along with a cannon and interpretive displays related to the Fort. Tennessee’s waterfall hikes are some of the most popular in the state. Burgess Falls in the Upper Cumberland region is 1.5 miles and classified as moderately strenuous. Greeter Falls is located within South Cumberland State Park in Palmer. The natural area is one of Tennessee’s most scenic wildernesses. The 90-foot Bald River Falls makes its roaring home in the Cherokee National Forest in Tellico Plains and is hailed as one of the greatest waterfalls in the region. The Great Falls in the 883-acre Rock Island State Park is a cascading 30-foot horseshoe. Fall Creek Falls in Spencer is one of the highest waterfalls in the eastern United States at 256 feet. The waterfalls are located in Tennessee’s largest and most visited state park with 26,000 acres.

Water Adventures

Whether you are in need of a soothing float down the river, or in the mood for a rip-roaring whitewater rafting adventure, the scenic rivers of Tennessee never fail to provide an inspiring experience. More than 50,000 miles of winding, enchanting rivers, and streams, along with more than a half million acres of pristine lakes and eco-diverse marshes, make the Volunteer State a paradise for those drawn to the wonders of water. In West Tennessee, you’ll find the Mississippi River with its endless water adventures. Along the Mississippi River Corridor, you can try your hand at hiking, biking, camping, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and boating. Among the most scenic, Reelfoot Lake, nestled in northwest Tennessee, is famous for its year-round fishing, eagle-viewing, and lakeside dining. Chickasaw National Wildlife Refuge in Ripley lies in the Lower Mississippi River floodplain along the Chickasaw Bluff. Other places for paddling are the Beech River Watershed in Lexington, Natchez Trace State Park in Wildersville, and the big water of Kentucky Lake, where canoeing, kayaking and rafting are part of the fun. Middle Tennessee and the Upper

Cumberland are rife with opportunities for adventure. Center Hill, Dale Hollow, and Cordell Hull Lakes are great spots for fishing, boating, canoeing, and swimming. Several state parks like Cumberland Mountain, David Crockett, and Rock Island have plenty of water options. Tim’s Ford State Park and Dam, on the headwaters of the Elk River, is another great spot for adventure. The 125-mile Harpeth River Blueway and the Floating Mill Recreation Area, which runs 64 miles up the Caney Fork River, are both wonderlands for outdoor adventurers. The Duck River Blueway has the only Class II rapids on the lower portion of the river. The lakes, rivers, and mountains of East Tennessee are a paradise for boaters, bikers, hikers, and climbers, with a nice dose of horseback riding and zip-lining thrown in. Try the Obed Wild and Scenic River: The name says it all. The Big South Fork, Caney Fork, and Clinch Rivers are other beautiful and exciting places for testing the waters. Boone Reservoir in Northeast Tennessee is one of the best places for kayaking,

suitable for all levels of paddlers. Lakes like Chickamauga and Norris are great for a calm day on the lake, while the Hiwassee and Ocoee River Recreation Areas have some of the most famous whitewater in the nation, called one of “America’s Best Adventures” by National Geographic. You’ll find Class III and IV rapids in several spots, including the Tellico ledges, the middle prong of the Little Pigeon and the Tremont River. Check out the caves at Cumberland Gap National Recreation Area, try a zip line in Pigeon Forge, or explore the hang gliding and rock climbing opportunities in spots like Lookout Mountain or Great Smoky Mountains National Park. If winter sports are your thing, don’t forget the skiing and snowboarding at Ober Gatlinburg. Whatever type of outdoor thrills you seek, Tennessee has it all.

Off-road biking is allowed in Great Smoky Mountains National Park in several spots. The tranquil Cades Cove Loop encourages bikers, and rentals are available. Community Spotlight – Helping Hands Ministry

n the spring of 2010, Frank Davis, who was serving as the Executive Director of Habit for Humanity in McMinn County, took note that many of the calls they received for help did not entail building a house. The people who reached out for help had a leaking roof, a bathroom floor that was collapsing, a water heater that was leaking and rotting out the floor around it, and many requests for access ramps. With that in mind, Frank left Habitat for Humanity and began a process to help these homeowners by doing the needed repairs, and so Helping Hands Ministry was formed. Helping Hands Ministry is a non-denominational Christian outreach ministry. Helping Hands Ministry offers assistance to low income homeowners with home repairs and property “spruce up” for widows, veterans, shut-ins, and others who are unable or who do not have the skills or resources to complete or manage the repairs on their own. The ministry serves all of our Heavenly Father’s children who are in temporary need of labor assistance, regardless of race, religion, and ethnicity. Ever since our inception, Helping Hands has been able to make a positive change in the lives of a number of people by making their lives more comfortable and safer. In 2017, 100 families were visited, and it impacted the lives of 231 individuals. In 2018, we visited 93 families and impacted the lives of 213 individuals. The ministry strives to improve the “quality of life” for those who are helped. Helping Hands Ministry depends on grants and other monetary donations to purchase needed supplies to complete the tasks. Donations of building supplies such as wood, shingles, cabinetry, bathroom fixtures, plumbing supplies, etc. are always welcome. The real blessing from something like this comes by volunteering. The Freedom Engine: East Tennessee Remembers 9/11 Artifacts on Display at the Museum of East Tennessee History

ow through October 13, visitors to the Museum of East Tennessee History will have an opportunity to view special items associated with the “Freedom Engine,” a tribute gift from East Tennesseans to New York City following the events of September 11, 2001. East Tennesseans contributed more than $940,000 to purchase and equip a 95-foot tower ladder truck for Harlem-based Ladder Company 14, helping the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) replenish the largest vehicles in the city’s firefighting fleet. The so-called “Freedom Engine” went into service during March 2002 and was dedicated on September 11th of that year. FDNY typically retires their trucks from regular service after about 10 years. The Freedom Engine went into reserve status in 2013. Upon retirement, several artifacts associated with the truck, including a bucket door, captain’s helmet, memorial plaque from the people of East

ast winter the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center unveiled their newest holiday tradition with the Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit, and since that time, the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have been painstakingly busy in their workshops adding intricate details and design elements to the displays. “We have added so many great new things to discover and cannot wait for folks to see all that we have created!” said Allan Gartner, Club President. Everyone, including our spouses, has been getting into the work.” “Getting to see the reactions on the children’s and parents’ faces last year made the all the work and planning well worth it,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “It truly felt like the holidays! The members of the MMRC put so many hours into the preparation and presentation of the exhibit, we

River Lumber Company started hauling lumber out of what is now the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This lumber and the various products related to logging were vital to the community and surrounding areas and were shipped across the country to places like Chicago and many other major cities. After the founding of the National Park, it was the Citizen Conservation Corps (CCC) who was able to utilize these now unused railroad beds and turn them into the hiking trails we know and love throughout the Smokies. After a successful first year, there have been several new additions to the exhibit for this holiday season. One of the new models to see is a replica of the Little River Sawmill that was once located along the Little River in Townsend. More than 90 hours, all volunteered by the MMRC, have been put into this one piece, and it will be completed right before the exhibit opens to the public on Friday, November 8th. The history of the locomotives and lumber in East Tennessee is in H/O scale, which is 1:87, which makes an H/O scale hotel the size of a loaf of bread. With some of the buildings having more than 1,600 parts, the tedious attention to detail is shown in the final product. Another new addition for 2019 is the Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone for kids. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is offering the chance to be creative and enjoy family time with your kids in our brand new, hands-on Train Discovery Zone. Bring out your junior engineers and conductors, as well as your own inner child, to create, design, and build your very own train landscape. The Heritage Center will supply the track, trains, and toys, and you supply the imagination. Complete with multiple building tables, lots of track, trains, and wooden building logs to create your very own miniature village, everyone in your family will be sure to bring out the curiosity and creativity in all generations. The Smoky Junction Train Discovery Zone is sponsored by Blount Partnership. The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit and the kids’ Train Discovery Zone will be chugging along on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from November 8th through January 5th. Admission to the exhibit is included in museum admission ($8 adults, $6 seniors and children ages 6-18). It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. The experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center. Each day that the trains are running a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer questions and to show how they operate the trains. TV Lions 15th Annual Oktoberfest T 12A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, October, 2019

he TV Lions will be holding their annual Oktoberfest at the TV Yacht Club on October 7 at 4 pm. Food and beverage service continues until 7 pm. This marks the 15th year in a row that this event has been held. At a Lions Club meeting early in 2004, Lion Mike Kittl, a die-hard Austrian, came up with the idea of having this uniquely German event in Tellico Village. From its first iteration, it has been a huge success and a prime fundraiser for the club. In addition to great German food – bratwurst, sauerkraut, German potato salad, beans, condiments, and, of course, plenty of German beer – the Oktoberfest provides a great social evening where you can meet with friends and neighbors and enjoy the evening. You can also dance or sing along to great music, German and other, provided by DJ Steve Bartoleme. Because of its popularity and Yacht Club capacity, tickets are limited, so if you want to join the crowd, get

your tickets early. Priced at $14/person, they are available from any Lion, Sloan’s Home Center, the United Community Bank, and The Village Salon. Because of the crowd and somewhat limited capacity, you can park in

the lot at Tugaloo Pavilion and ride a free shuttle to and from the club. Events such as this provide funds to the Lions Club to support a myriad of activities. These include donations to numerous service organizations focused on visual problem remediation, as well as a program of health and vision screening in local service organizations and schools. A good specific example of the use of funds raised in this and other events is TV Lions Club participation in a Habitat for Humanity house build. This is a joint effort with the Kiwanis, Rotary Club, and Women’s Club all in Tellico Village and the Loudon Lions Club in Loudon. The build is currently commencing at the Hope Haven enclave, off Route 72, of the Loudon County Habitat for Humanity organization. A project such as this and many others is only possible thanks to the fantastic support from the residents of Tellico Village. Thanks and see you at the Oktoberfest!

od’s Work — Our Hands is an annual event of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) as a special time set aside for community service by our congregations. Across the country this fall, nearly 9,300 congregations are engaging in service work to make a positive change in our communities, deepen relationships, and share God’s love. Since 2013, Shepherd of the Lake in Loudon has participated by serving at local community centers, animal shelters, day care and assisted living facilities, and more. This year the volunteers drove to the Second Harvest Food Bank distribution facility in Alcoa to help as needed. As it turns out, our contribution was to help bag individual portions for distribution as part of Second Harvest’s School Pantry program. School Pantries are in counties and schools where the need for food is greatest, where the percentage of students at an economic disadvantage are the highest and where students and their families are underserved through other programs. School Pantries impact some of the most vulnerable children in our communities – children who may be missing meals on a regular basis. Child hunger doesn’t stop when school is not in session. Summer Food for Kids ensures that children are able to bring food home over weekends and school holidays when they are not able to participate in the school programs. Shepherd of the Lake members filled 1,302 bags of cereal for those in need in East Tennessee. That’s 244 pounds! Additional members filled in on Wednesday at Second Harvest in areas they were needed. Last month we were delighted to welcome Seminarian James Trussell, a Second Harvest Food Bank employee, as our guest

Clarence Brown Theatre’s New Play, “People Where They Are,” Focuses on Highlander Center Teaching

he world premiere of the CBT-commissioned “People Where They Are” will be performed in the Clarence Brown Theatre’s Carousel Theatre October 2-20. Written specifically for the current UT Theatre MFA actors by Anthony Clarvoe and directed by Calvin MacLean, the play dramatizes the famous Highlander Center’s expansion into the Civil Rights movement and more. Several ancillary events will accompany this production. In 1932, Myles Horton, Don West, Jim Dombrowski, and others founded the Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, Tennessee. They focused first on organizing unemployed and working people, and by the late 1930s, Highlander was serving as the de-facto CIO education center for the region, training union organizers and leaders in 11 southern states. During this period, Highlander also fought segregation in the labor movement, holding its first integrated workshop in 1944. Highlander’s commitment to ending segregation made it a critically important incubator of the Civil Rights movement. Workshops and training sessions at Highlander helped lay the groundwork for many of the movement’s most important initiatives, including the Montgomery bus boycott, the Citizenship Schools, and the founding of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). In 1961, after years of red-baiting and several government investigations, the state of Tennessee revoked Highlander’s charter and seized its land and buildings. The school reopened the next day as the Highlander Research and Education Center. From 1961-1971, it was based in Knoxville, and in 1972, it moved to its current location near New Market, Tennessee. According to Clarvoe, all the actions depicted in the play actually happened, and all the characters are based on actual people. But the timeline of events has been rearranged and telescoped and the named characters are amalgams of several different historical figures. MacLean said that when he and the cast began work with the playwright in December 2017, the work of Highlander was largely unknown to them. Clarvoe brought to their attention the historical significance of Highlander and the ironies of its placement in rural East Tennessee. They had no idea that, while working on the play, the eruptions of violence would increase and even visit upon the Highlander Center in New Market. “This new play dramatizes Highlander’s expansion into the Civil Rights movement,” said MacLean. “But it also takes aim at our own time by dramatizing our own ongoing discussions about race, ‘otherness,’ and the eruption of violence our nation has endured since even before we began this particular artistic journey.” MacLean (Director) is in his 14th year as Theatre Department Head and CBT Company Producing Artistic Director. CBT productions he has directed include “A Flea in Her Ear,” “The Life of Galileo,” “The Secret Rapture,” “A Streetcar Named Desire” (with Dale Dickey), “Amadeus” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra), “Kiss Me, Kate,” “Sweeney Todd” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and Dale Dickey), “Our Country’s Good,” “The Threepenny Opera,” “The Open Hand,” “The Crucible,” and “Candide” (with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra). He was the Artistic Director of the Illinois Shakespeare Festival for 11 seasons. Professionally active in Chicago, his productions – mostly at the Famous Door Theatre – earned several Joseph Jefferson Awards for Outstanding Production and Direction. Most notable were Joshua Sobol’s Ghetto, a production that ran for seven months and honored with four Jeff Awards, including for Outstanding Direction of a Play and Anthony Clarvoe’s “The Living,” which won Joseph Jefferson Awards for Outstanding Direction of a Play and Outstanding Production. Playwright Anthony Clarvoe has received American

Theatre Critics, LA Drama Critics, Elliot Norton (New England drama critics), SF Bay Area Theatre Critics, Will Glickman, Garland, and Edgerton New American Play awards; fellowships from the Guggenheim, Irvine, Jerome, and McKnight Foundations, National Endowment for the Arts, TCG/Pew Charitable Trusts, and Kennedy Center; commissions from South Coast Rep, Mark Taper Forum, and Playwrights Horizons; the Berrilla Kerr Award for his contributions to American theater; and many others. A native San Franciscan and long-time resident of New York and the Midwest, he lives with his family in Berkeley, CA. Dee Dee Battest (Co-Director) is a Chicago based actress, director, and teacher. She performed last year at the CBT in Detroit ’67. She received her undergraduate degree from Ball State University and her MFA from UNC-Chapel Hill. The UT Theatre MFA actors performing in this play are Aleah Vassell (Mrs. Clark), Owen Squire Smith (Mr. Carawan), Brittany Marie Pirozzoli (May), Brenda Orellana (Emma), Collin Andrews (Ned), and Jade Arnold (John). The creative team for the production includes John Merritt (Costume Design), Carrie Ferrelli (Scenic Design), Mike Ponder (Sound Design), Bill Miller (Lighting Design), Kathy Logelin (Dialect Coach), Casey Sams (Choreographer/Intimacy Coach), and Dane Urban (Stage Manager). He also will shed light on his journey of collecting portraits created by another co-founder of the Highlander, Connie West, which were done to depict influential individuals of the Highlander. nyone who has read Boomerocity or any of the publications that have ran abridged versions of our interviews knows that Toto’s Steve Lukather is one of our favorite guys to hang and/or chat with. We’ve interviewed him five times and have met him in person three times. When you chat with him, he’s a blowtorch of unvarnished truth and can string words together in a way that will have your sides hurting from laughing almost non-stop. Whenever we get a chance to chat with him, we jump at the chance. One such chance arose with the band’s release of their CD/DVD, Forty Trips Around the Sun – a video chronicle of Toto’s 40th anniversary tour a couple of years ago. I also wanted to talk with Lukather about Toto’s current tour that stops at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium on October 8th. Reached at his home in Southern California, Lukather and I chatted, wherein he shared about the rigors of life on the road. He was quite philosophical about it. “I chose this life, and a lot of people don’t realize that it is an incredibly lonely life,” he said. “People think, ‘How could you be lonely, playing in front of tens of thousands of people every night?’ It’s very easy, actually, when you go from the highest highs to the lowest lows in the period of an hour. Very strange to go from the stage – that’s the rush. That’s what we all live for. We don’t get paid for that. That’s the fun part. We get paid for the other 20 hours of the day that we sit in a room. After doing it for most of my life, I just kind of hang in the room. Read. Try to find myself before the dirt nap hits.” When we last spoke, Lukather had just released his autobiography, The Gospel According to Luke. I asked him how the book did and is currently doing. “That thing has had a life of its own,” he said. “I had no idea! The most random people tell me they’ve read the book or they’re reading the book. I get a message from somebody. It’s still going, man. They’re after me to do number two now – continue the story. Talk a lot more about

my session life and certain records that I did in more detail. I got a million stories. I mean, I had 400 pages hit the floor. So I’m going to have to have the New Testament, right? Have the New Testament.” Lukather then went on to talk about the “40 Trips” CD/DVD. “Boy, what an excursion that has been in terms of… a real bad time for us – all but destroyed everything. And you know, that’s a tough pill to swallow, and that’s why it’s taken so long to get this DVD out, because we were held by hostage by somebody who’s evil, and we had to live through that.” After summarizing the legal hassles the band encountered to get the project out, Lukather concluded: “So we had no choice. We didn’t mean to do that, but we got held up at the last minute. As per someone who hates you that much, likes to plan that way. And then for reasons unknown, and we don’t even know what it was all about. You spent so much money. I wish I had the money we spent. But that’s the whole of the story. It’s been a whole betrayal. It just got tough. But I don’t want to get into that too heavily, because it’s just another reason to sue me, because I breathe. Sue me because I breathe. We actually recorded it and filmed it a yearand-a-half, two years ago when we started this 40 trips tour.” Here’s what fans can expect from the CD/DVD: “It’s a great snapshot of living for four years,” said Lukather. “I’m glad Paige is in it, because Dave’s not – you know, his health is not great. He’s 65, and he is pretty much is done touring, you know? What can fans expect from this tour? “We’re going to give it the best we’ve got,” said Lukather. “We’re fine. We just want to get through this and have a great time doing it. We’ve had an incredible run of this. he Foothills Craft Guild, Inc. (FCG) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization chartered in 1968 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to promote fine crafts by (1) setting high standards of creativity and excellence of execution for a variety of handcrafts, (2) providing demonstrations, scholarships, and education about fine craft for people of all ages, and (3) promoting the sale of fine crafts. FCG is the oldest member craft guild in the state of Tennessee and has earned a reputation nationwide as one of the best in the Southeast region.

Iron Works Grille on The River

oug Morris, a former pilot with Delta Air Lines, discovered Tellico Plains about a decade ago while pursuing his passion for motorcycles. During one of his many trips, Doug fell in love with the area and decided to make Tellico Plains his home. He launched a cabin rental business in 2014 while contemplating the opening of a restaurant on the scenic Tellico River. BD (cannabidiol oil) is one of many cannabinoids found in cannabis. Cannabis is the genus name for both marijuana and hemp. Today’s CBD comes from the hemp plant, which is rich in CBD while having negligible THC. CBD Types

» Full Spectrum (Whole Plant) – Contains all hemp cannabinoids, as well as terpenes (essential oil with healing properties) plus trace amounts of THC. CBD and terpenes produce the entourage effect, which results in a variety of health and wellness benefits. Third party labs include a terpene profile, which shows the levels of each terpene in the product. Do not use full spectrum if drug testing is a concern. » Broad Spectrum – Cannabinoids plus terpenes but no THC. These products have been processed to the isolate form, then have additional cannabinoids and terpenes added in. When CBD has a strength, it’s the amount in the entire bottle. For example, 100mg has 100mg CBD per container, not per piece. » Isolate – Pure CBD that has been isolated from the rest of the hemp plant up to 99.8%. The crystalline isolate CBD powder is usually in a carrier oil like MCT oil. Oil Types » Regular – Traditional oil good as an oral drop or mixed with food. » MCT Oil – Extracted from coconut oil and mixed with honey. Find a company that provides independent lab testing on their products and that makes it readily available to their customers. 3. Some companies have a customer experience team available to answer questions. 4. Third party lab testing-the lab checks for potency and for residual solvents and heavy metals. You can call the lab to verify if the report is real. 5. Do they have a current website? More important, does the brand have a website? Look for an address, email, and phone number. Search the address online to make sure it matches the company’s location. 6. Public feedback – A company’s reputation is very important. Don’t just believe ratings on their website; check other sites for negative information. Seek out news articles of police raids where the product might be mentioned. 7. Sourcing – Who is producing the hemp? Hemp from China tends to be low quality and high in heavy metals. 8. Transparency – If a brand has their own farm, are they willing to discuss harvesting and processing practices? Would they be willing to let you visit the corporate office? You don’t have to go that far, but transparency and being willing to communicate with customers is very important. 9. Synthetics – If you see a report that a product has even a hint of synthetic cannabinoids, steer clear. ’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes.” It’s kind of true, actually. And my job is to make sure that the “tax” part is kept to a minimum. There are actually several different types of tax triggered at someone’s passing, including estate tax and income tax. Under the current tax code, estate tax only comes into play if you have more than $11.4 million in assets, so for the vast majority of us, it doesn’t apply. But income tax is another story, and that depends on what type of account is inherited and whether beneficiaries have been named or not. Bank accounts and non-retirement invest-

ment accounts are not taxable to your heirs. They get a “step-up” in tax basis, meaning any unrealized gains are wiped away, and the inherited assets have a new, stepped up basis. Accounts are retitled into the heirs’ names and they’re done. Easy enough. Pre-tax retirement accounts: These are the MOST complicated accounts to inherit by far. They are taxable to your heirs as they receive distributions. Spouses have the unique ability to combine an IRA with their existing IRA and continue as if they always owned the account. They use their own age for Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) rules and wait until age 70½ to begin taxable withdrawals. Non-spouse beneficiaries can take a

lump sum distribution, or withdraw the balance over five years, or transfer the balance into an Inherited IRA and begin taking RMDs based on their age. The most tax-advantageous method is to set up an Inherited IRA. But many times beneficiaries don’t understand these options and inadvertently take a fully taxable lump sum distribution. In that unfortunate circumstance, almost 40% of your hard-earned retirement account could go to the IRS rather than to your heirs. An integral part of financial planning is ensuring that all beneficiaries are properly named, accounts are property titled, and your estate planning structure is in place to avoid accidental taxation at your passing. MCFA Dogs of the Week

re you looking for a well-behaved older companion? Oreo is a 7-year-old shih tzu-mix dog who is looking for his furever home. At 14 pounds, he is just the right size for snuggling. He is blind but gets around just fine. Oreo is part of the Second Chance Pals program, which partners with the shelter to help get older dogs adopted. Adopting a senior dog has many advantages. Senior dogs at shelters need homes just as badly as younger dogs. Many older dogs were once owned and loved by someone. For whatever reason, they were given up and abandoned in a shelter and need a home. Just like puppies and younger adoptable dogs, they make loyal and loving companions. Older dogs usually come trained and understand at least basic commands. Most older dogs are potty trained and have mastered the basic commands such as “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “down.” Adopting an already-trained dog will save you a lot of time and energy that you’d normally have to dedicate towards training a young dog. You can teach an old dog new tricks. Dogs can be trained at any age, and older dogs are just as smart as younger ones. Older dogs have a greater attention span than a puppy, which make them easier to train. Older dogs are calmer and less energetic than younger dogs. An adult dog has graduated from the puppy stage and has an established demeanor and temperament. Older dogs have all their adult teeth and are out of the energetic puppy phase, which will result in less destruction to your home. Many of them do well with young children as they have a lower energy level and have possibly lived with them in their past homes. Older dogs make instant companions. Unlike a puppy, which requires leash training, etc., an older dog is ready to accompany you on a long walk and already knows how to play fetch. An adult dog will make a great workout partner, a loyal companion, and a

late night snuggle buddy. Dolan is the sweetest, most mellow guy at the shelter. He is a 46 pound mixed breed brown and white boy and about seven years old. Dolan loves other dogs, children, long walks on a leash, and just life in general. If you are looking for a chilled-out companion to travel or just hang out with, Dolan is the dog for you. Dolan is neutered and ready to roll if you would like to come and meet him. Dolan has many friends who are also at the shelter, waiting for furever homes. Beau is a medium size mixed Australian Shepherd with a huge grin. He is about three years old but still has a puppy personality. Beau is housebroken and can be crated if you are home; however, he will bark if he is crated with no one home. He is fully grown at 37 pounds and has a beautiful full black/white merle colored coat. Beau is a healthy and happy boy who is looking for someone to love him. Looking for something to do to get out of the heat? he calendar says fall, but the temperatures while I write this still say summer! This is posing some problems, so let’s address those first. Number one: It is terribly dry, and October is typically our driest month. This means that you are going to HAVE to water well, or your plants are going to die. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because you need to get water 12” into the soil at least once a week, preferably twice during this drought. (As a guideline, I’m putting five gallons on smaller shrubs, 10 on trees and large shrubs.) You can’t do that with a sprinkler! Hand water or use a drip line. Number two: Some of your plants probably look like crap. This doesn’t mean they are dead. Many deciduous trees and shrubs are losing so much water through evaporation that they can’t pull it from the roots fast enough. The leaves are going to dry up and fall off. Some will try to replace them, and other plants will just decide that they are done for the year. As long as your branches are flexible, they will most likely come back out next spring. You still need to water them! The same is true for perennials. Some of mine have gone completely dormant, but I know from experience that they will come back. Number three: Yes, fall is still a good time to plant. We just have to push the timing back a little. The temperatures in October are great for planting, but it is dry as a bone (see #1). This means that for trees and shrubs, November has now become the star month. We usually start get-

Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t forget viburnums, cotoneaster, hollies, Pyracantha (watch those thorns), and good ole Nandinas. (Side note on Nandina: Those berries that we have been growing for the birds actually contain cyanide. While the quantity is small, if a bird consumes enough, it will kill it. We no longer carry the Nandina domestica because of this.) Mahonia also has a good berry set in the fall and winter. There are also some perennials that either bloom in the fall or keep their foliage. Anemones, Joe Pye weed, Sedums, and Turtlehead bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers such as Coreopsis, Coneflowers, Black Eyed Susan, and Russian Sage often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the perennials that are evergreen! Dianthus, some Sedums, Lenten Rose, Heuchera, and Candytuft are just a few that stick around for the winter months. Grasses also add color and movement through the ugly months. As for annuals, you can’t beat a pansy for color. Plant them now and they will last until next May! They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good. I will finish by reminding you that there are a few chores that need to be done in the fall: 1. Clean up your flower beds. You can choose to leave plants that provide seeds for the birds but get fallen leaves and debris up so that fungal spores and insects don’t overwinter in them. JDRF to Honor Dr. Joe Johnson at 27th Annual Dream Gala

r. Joe Johnson, President Emeritus of The University of Tennessee, has been named as the T1D Champion for the 27th Annual JDRF Dream Gala. Dr. Johnson will be acknowledged for his longstanding commitment to JDRF’s vision of a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). Dr. Joe Johnson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes in his 40s and has inspired others in the T1D community with his service at the University of Tennessee and throughout the East Tennessee community while also managing this 24/7 condition. Dr. Johnson is a devoted advocate of diabetes research, sits on countless boards, and has made a tremendous impact on those living daily with T1D. JDRF East Tennessee (formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) is proud to honor this legendary member of our community at the JDRF Dream Gala. The black-tie event, chaired by University of Tennessee alumni, Ashley and Ryan Jones, will be held at the Knoxville Convention Center on Saturday, November 9, and is expected to draw 500 guests.
