Dollywood’s Harvest Festival Brings Fall
Family Fun to American’s #1 Theme Park
New Hoot Owl Hollow displays provide more fun for “owl”
Dollywood guests are sure to have a “hoot” during this year’s Harvest Festival presented by Humana (through Oct. 29) thanks to a brand-new area created within the family-favorite Great Pumpkin LumiNights presented by Covenant Health. Appropriately named Hoot Owl Hollow, the area features hundreds of pumpkins in Dollywood’s Craftsman’s Valley that celebrate the nocturnal creature, including a massive 14’ tall version created with more than 150 carved white pumpkins. It’s just the latest addition to the event that has overwhelmingly become one of America’s favorite fall family destinations, and it surely will have guests pulling an “owl-nighter” in order to experience “owl” the fun!
A longstanding tradition for so many, the Harvest Festival greets guests with the surrounding mountainsides draped in vibrant colors. Dollywood’s landscaping and fresh décor accent the autumn atmosphere and bring the beauty right into the park, making it ripe for families to create their picture-perfect pumpkin photo ops to share with friends!
At night, Great Pumpkin LumiNights, one of the nation’s premier family-friendly harvesttime events, provides bushels of memories for guests, thanks to thousands of glowing and carved pumpkins throughout Dollywood. For those with small children— or anyone looking for a fun, not scary experience—this event is certainly the cream of the crop. Families can bask in the glow as they wander through displays in Dollywood’s Timber Canyon, Wilderness Pass, Wildwood Grove and Craftsman’s Valley areas. Beyond the impressive displays, guests can find a number of exciting activities to create long-lasting memories together.
“I think everybody knows I believe every day in the Smoky Mountains is beautiful and truly a gift from God,” Dolly Parton said, “but I do feel like fall is when He really puts on a show for all of us to admire and enjoy. As the leaves change, the mountains transform into a patchwork of bright, vibrant colors that make them look as if they’ve come alive. The hot summer days start to fade and crisp, cool winds bring that fresh mountain air down into the valleys and right into my Dollywood. To me, this

“I just know folks are going to get a kick out of the new Hoot Owl Hollow. And in ‘owl’ seriousness, I hope our guests make their own precious Smoky Mountain memories while they are here. As I look back on my favorite family memories, so many of them took place during this time of year, and I hope our guests leave with the those special moments they’ll share forever.”
No festival at Dollywood is complete without award-winning entertainment, and the Harvest Festival certainly delivers. Several genres are well-represented with a wide-range of Southern gospel and bluegrass artists, as well as Americana acts and classic country performers scheduled to appear. In all, more than 1900 performances take place during the Harvest Festival.
Fresh off a finalist appearance on America’s Got Talent, Chapel Hart graces the stage of DP’s Celebrity Theater on Oct. 2. Country music legend John Anderson—known for hits like Swingin’, Seminole Wind, and Straight Tequila Night—visits the park on Oct. 10. Christian artists Karen Peck and New River (Oct. 5), Triumphant Quartet (Oct. 19) and The Isaacs (Oct. 21) also entertain guests throughout the festival. Bluegrass is well represented with Rhonda Vincent and the Rage (Oct. 24), Dailey & Vincent (Oct. 24) and more set to perform. Knoxville’s Emily Ann Roberts—who placed second on season nine of NBC’s The Voice—performs Oct. 20.
A complete schedule can be found on Dollywood.com. Performances take place on indoor and outdoor stages throughout the park, allowing the beautiful sounds to echo through the surrounding hillsides and create a highly engaging entertainment offering.
Dollywood’s culinary team has created a smorgasbord of creations to take advantage of the bountiful supply of crops provided by the Smoky Mountain harvest. The smells of smoked bratwursts, turkey legs, or smoked andouille sausage mac and cheese pair nicely with the fresh tastes of sweet potato poutine, spiced pumpkin bisque and BUSH’S three bean pumpkin chili. For sweet treats, the ever-popular pumpkin spice is in full supply with items ranging from pumpkin spice churros with pumpkin fluff to pumpkin spice iced coffee. Items like the maple pecan bacon
funnel cake, hot apple cider, wassail or an apple pie milkshake are perfect to carry and enjoy while admiring the beauty of Dollywood in the fall.
Several other guest favorites return to the Harvest Festival, including the colossal pumpkins—last year’s pumpkins ranged in weight from 800 to 1500 lbs. each—which come from growers across the East Coast. Visiting artisans and makers display their handmade wares at locations throughout Dollywood, with many demonstrating the talented skills and techniques they use as they create their one-of-a-kind treasures.
With so many opportunities for creating vibrant new family traditions, Dollywood’s Harvest Festival is a mustsee experience this season.
Dollywood is open 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. each day of operation (Sept. 23- Oct. 29) during the Harvest Festival. The park is closed on Tuesdays throughout the festival. For more information and a park operating calendar, visit Dollywood.com or download the Dollywood app.

AsI write this, I am sitting on my porch swing on my deck overlooking the forest behind our home. This is my happy place! The leaves are beginning to change, and I know that soon the rich, vibrant colors of fall will take over the landscape.
And yet, most of us don’t like change. It’s hard. Many of us shy away from change, even when we know it’s for the better – in favor of staying in our comfort zone, in favor of what’s familiar.
This last year has been full of so much change for us, expected and unexpected. Good change, and hard change. That’s what hap pens when, after spending your entire life in one state, you move 2,500 miles away. Moving from our California home of 24 years was a dream come true, but still incredibly hard and stressful. We bought our home in Loudon and have been changing that too (but let’s not get into that)!
Few things in life are certain, and one of them is change. Moving and trying to put down new roots, financial challenges, loss of a job, learning a new job, dealing with house repairs and contractors - even our trash not getting picked up on a regular basis - they’re all challenging, stressful, and often painful, but they’re all just a part of life that we often can’t control.
As I sit on my swing, drinking in the beauty of nature, I am re minded that God is the creator of all, and He never changes. Maybe the beauty and splendor of fall, especially here in East Tennessee, is God reminding us that change can be beautiful if we embrace it and
count our blessings. Moving can lead to new opportunities, new freedoms, and new friends. Getting out of our comfort zone can lead to new experiences and new personal growth.
Just a few minutes ago, I received our weekly church email which included this message from our interim pastor at First Baptist Church TV. It ties in beautifully:
“… Soon we may see firsthand the beauty of nature in the fall colors for which East Tennessee is famous. Have you ever noticed that the beauty of fall comes at the season of change related to dormancy and dying? As nature protects the integrity of deciduous trees and shrubs by removing old foliage to make way for spring time buds and flowers, we may learn a valuable lesson of spiritual growth as well. ‘Though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day. For our light affliction worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory’, 2 Corinthians 4:16-17. Take courage, Christian. God is working on His church, His masterpiece.’” - Brother Charlie
So, enjoy fall. Enjoy the beautiful colors of nature and the cooler weather. And remember that change can lead to something beautiful.
Kathy Rose East Tennessee’s Mountain ViewsChanges to Medicare in 2023 That You Need to Know
By yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPaExciting changes are afoot for 2023, and I can’t wait to share them with you. In fact, they’re so exciting that we’re hosting a Zoom call to share more information with you – but more on that later.
Whatever your political leanings, if you are one of over 60 million Americans in the Medicare system, there is no denying that the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act will bring predictability to your prescrip tion costs. Here are the big takeaways:
Insulin costs will be capped at $35/ month beginning in 2023. Costs of insulin have been steadily increasing and ac cording to the Kaiser Family Foundation, Part D enrollees spent $1 billion out of pocket on insulin in 2020, more than four times the amount spent in 2007. This new monthly cap is a sigh of relief to the millions of diabetics within the Medicare system.
You’ve probably heard of the “doughnut hole” in the current Part D programs, where Medicare covers expensive medications for a period of time before the retiree falls into
the hole and has to pay out of pocket before Medicare kicks back in as catastrophic coverage. Retirees can spend tens of thousands of dollars on expensive chemotherapy drugs and rheumatoid arthri tis drugs for example. But no more - annual out of pocket prescription costs will be capped at $2,000/year begin ning in 2025. Game changer.
The US Government will finally be able to use its weight to negotiate prescription drug prices on behalf of Medicare recipients. It starts slowly, with 10 pricey drugs being ne gotiated in 2026, and goes on to add another 15 drugs in both 2027 and 2028, and then yet another 20 drugs in 2029. The ramp-up is slow, but this change will make Medicare a more cost-effective health insurance plan for both the government and its recipients.
Lastly, vaccines of all types will be free for Medicare recipients. No more delaying on those pneumonia or shingles vaccines!
Now, let’s switch gears and talk about Medicare Advantage Plans. Remember that Advantage plans are all-inclusive plans that have very low monthly premiums and then
you pay a co-pay when you visit the doctor or hospital. The 2 big knocks were high maxi mum out of pockets and limited ability to be covered beyond your local network. Before you say “not interested”, you should take a fresh look. Insurance companies are rolling out 2023 Advantage plans that include $2,000 - $3,000 dental coverage, significant vision and eyeglass coverage, hearing aid coverage, and a $200 quarterly payout for over-the-counter pharmacy items. And I’m not done yet: the maximum out of pocket for those co-pays is dropping to $3,200 in 2023 and then down to $2,000 in 2024. No more worrying that a hos pital stay could drain your savings with high co-pays. Most importantly, plans are putting into writing that you can see any network pro vider while traveling in the US and the copay will be the same.
This is game changer stuff, people. When you add up the cost of your total health costs under traditional Medicare: the supplement premium, the prescription premium, the out of pocket for dental, vision, hearing aids, OTC needs, and then stack it up against an Advantage plan that covers all of that, you’re in for a pleasant surprise.
As I mentioned, we are so excited about
both the Medicare changes brought by the Inflation Reduction Act and the improve ment in plan options for retirees in 2023, that we want to host a Zoom call to talk more about it. Rick Austin, will be our featured speaker. He is an independent Medicare insurance professional who has provided our clients with Medicare expertise for the last 8 years. He is known for his no-nonsense approach to finding the best Medicare deal out there, and his easy-going friendly per sonality actually makes Medicare planning fun. He is a wealth of information, and I hope you’ll join us on Thursday, October 6th at 10:30 AM EST for a 45-minute Zoom. Please email terri@marshwealth.com to request the Zoom link.

Ellen and her compassionate, caring team of highly trained pharmaceutical associates have a mission to provide traditional pharmacy services combined with a holistic approach to health and well-being. Now, with the addition of their newest pharmacist, Arlyn Cuccia, the care available at believeRX just got even better.

believeRX is very different from the “na tional chain” pharmacy you are used to. Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches.
Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each cus tomer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ail ments or prescription medications. Remember the old-fashioned pharma cies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when need ed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those phar macists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like only a number. It is refresh ing and encouraging that believeRX still
believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service.
To experience a friendly, caring phar macy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assem bly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today!

Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, in Tellico Village, Has a New “Shepherd”
Pastor Phillip Vickers answered the call this month to lead the congregation, replacing Rev. Ingrid Schalk, who resigned last winter after serving the church for five years.
Pastor Phil came to Tennessee after begin ning his career in the Texas panhandle and more recently in Kansas City, Kansas. He brings with him his wife of 20 years, Cheryl, and their three children, Autumn, Zoe, and Sean.
Pastor Phil was raised in the Mississippi Delta. He was the first in his family to attend college. While studying English at Mississippi State, he also found faith, and was baptized by the campus minister at the Wesley Foundation (an outreach of the Methodist Church).
Shortly thereafter, Pastor Phil met his fu ture wife Cheryl who introduced him to the Lutheran faith. He received his Master of Divinity from Lutheran Theological Seminary in 2007. He served an internship in North Carolina at Winston-Salem before his first assignment in Texas. At Hutchison, Kansas, he supervised an intern and served as dean of the area, providing pastoral care for Lutheran clergy. He served there as associate pastor for family life ministries. In Kansas City, he was chair of the Resolutions Committee, receiving and editing proposals to be considered by the yearly assembly.
Pastor Phil delivered his first sermon at Shepherd of the Lake on September 4 and will soon lead a Wednesday morning Bible study on the Biblical Foundations of Lutheranism. These studies will begin at 10 a.m. at the church, 143 Chota Center, Loudon. The pastor will be formally installed at a church ceremony October 23 that will include regional leaders.
Pastor Phil enjoys hiking with his family, cooking and, per his English degree, reading and writing.

CELEBRATING 25 YEARS
First Baptist Church of Tellico Village
These are exciting times and important times at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village as we prepare to celebrate our Silver Anniversary (25 Years) on Sunday, November 6th during two worship services at 9 am and 10:30 am.
Our humble beginnings found its roots in 1995 when the faith of a small group of believers met to establish a new church. As this group expanded and organized on November 2nd of 1997, a first worship service was conducted in a store front in Lakeside Plaza of Tellico Village. In December of 1999 Cooper Properties donated 9.5 acres of land to the church onto which it broke ground on July 1st, in 2001. The building was completed and dedicated in May of 2002.
It was in July of 2005 that Dr. Charlie Barnard was called to be our second pastor and would remain so until April of 2022. Under Pastor Charlie’s leadership core values for the church were defined and a purpose statement adopted. The results of these two developments led to the church growing from around one hundred members to over five hundred members during his pastorate. The church would also expand the facilities with a new sanctuary, added in 2010, followed by a Fellowship Hall, additional office space, and a Library. All were completed in 2015 with all construction related debt retired by the congregation in December of 2018.
Today our church membership continues to grow, reflecting the demographics of our local community. The membership represents as many as twenty different church backgrounds but is grounded in its Baptist roots which is the single largest church demographic.
As a church we unite together to “Love God, Love Others, and Reach our World for Christ. You are invited to participate in our Silver Anniversary worship services on November 6th, at 9:00 or 10:30 am. Former staff members Charlie and Teresa Barnard, as well as Glenn and Shirley Gregg, will be leading in both services. If you are unable to attend, you can watch our live-stream broadcast of the worship service on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. on our website at www.fbctv.org. We hope that you will consider visiting with us or participating in one of the many activities planned throughout the year.
Good Shepherd Center Thanks Local Food Partners
During challenging times, it is always good to have strong partnerships. The Good Shepherd Center, located in Madisonville has developed key food partners that assist them in providing needed food for up to 1500 clients per month, just in Monroe County.
Three times a week our truck goes to Madisonville Walmart and picks up a variety of quality food, some is fresh produce, some go into our cooler, some to our freezer. Also, each week we pick up Little Ceasar pizzas to add variety and fun to our normal food distribution. Food City in Vonore provides food seven days a week that includes cakes, breads and other specialty items. On Saturday, our van arrives at the Tellico Plains Community Market to pick up fresh produce. This allows the Good Shepherd to provide healthy fresh vegetables to our cli ents. Each month each client receives two recipes to aid in healthy eating.
Many local churches also hold food drives, donate
household and personal hygiene items. We also have individuals who on a continuing basis purchase fruits, vegetables, meat, and other food items. They personally deliver them to the Center.
Tina Smith, Exec. Director stated, “We are so thankful for all the contributions these organizations and individ uals make to impact the lives of those in need in Monroe County! Their support along with the financial support of so many people allow us to continue in operation. Inflation has certainly been felt in our food purchase program at Second Harvest and now with lack of USDA food for the past two months, our clients are feeling the effects.”
If you wish to be a part of helping us in what we do, please feel free to reach out to us. We are always in need of prayer partners, community partners, volunteers, and financial support. If you would like to meet with either Tina or Ray for a tour or if you would like to donate:

Very Still Please
Itis a well know fact that a good bit of our communi cation is nonverbal. We can express ourselves with smiles, postures, hand gestures, and other general body language methods of communicating.
These are all very import ant methods of communi cating and this column is in no way intended to speak negatively about any of these nonverbal methods. But, as they say, there is a time and a place for everything.
In many cases, your stylist is responsible for creating a ‘work of art’ on your skull and is often using bleach and or sharp instruments to do so. This is not the time to have them chasing your head all over the place as you use it for emphasis recapping the past months current events.
The time in your providers chair is also not the time to use your hands to help show your frustration with a neighbor or family member.
Both the ‘rubber necking’ of a head bobber and the ‘talk with my hands’ of a good storyteller can be detri mental to your salon visit. They can affect the quality of your outcome, may result with you getting a hair color or bleach on you or your clothing, or simply exhaust your stylist by the end of your visit.
The best canvases to work on are the ones that are stationary and do not have any moving objects in their orbit. For best results, simply sit in your providers chair with both your hands in your lap and provide them with a good work area.
Remember, when your provider asks you to be “Very Still, Please,” they are asking that in an effort to serve you better. K Whitehead Managing Partner The

While there are lots of styles in your traditional fall colors... think greens, browns, and rusts... there are some bright and bold styles available this year as well. Try a hot pink or chartreuse sweater for a fun pop of color in your fall wardrobe!
still tend to be warmer, but the crisp evening requires an extra wrap. There are many styles to choose from this season... denim jackets, sweater vests, and lots of puffer coats to ease you into the cooler temperatures ahead.
Consider adding a piece of faux leather to your wardrobe this season. Whether you choose a jogger, legging, or jacket, you’ll be right on target with even a bit of detailing on your sleeve or down the pant leg.
Plaids are always a classic fall look! Wear them casually in the customer favorite “shacket” (a combination of a shirt and a jacket - perfect paired with leggings or jeans), or choose a dressier piece, like the Gretchen Scott tartan plaid pieces photo graphed in our advertisement.
Layering for fall has always been a strong look... our days

In the past, treatment options included bridges and dentures, but unfortunately, neither option addresses the issue of bone loss of the jawbone that often results from the loss of natural teeth.
One of the major advantages of dental implants is that the implant root, which is placed into the bone socket of the missing tooth, actually helps to support and maintain a
healthy level of jawbone mass, much the same as your nat ural teeth. Preventing jawbone loss helps to maintain both your health and a more youthful appearance, preventing the “collapsed” jaw look of those who have experienced signifi cant bone loss of the jaw. The presence of natural tooth roots or implant roots continues to preserve the jawbone through the pressure and stimulus resulting from normal chewing action. This healthy pressure and stimulus is reduced by 90% or more with conventional dentures.
So the positive and healthy impli cations of dental implants go far beyond just your appearance. With good oral hygiene and regular dental care, your implants can function just like your natural teeth while lasting a life time. And with the added advantage of the implants’ roots, you can avoid that sunken, premature appearance that hap pens when jawbone loss occurs.
At Heritage Family Dentistry in nearby and convenient Farragut, Dr. Jonathan Bradshaw and his team of experi enced, caring, and compassionate dental professionals can assist you in making the right choice of dentures or implants, as well as provide family friendly dental care. Heritage Family Dentistry can also assist you with financing to help assure that you receive the dental care you need. By Darla Zorn owner/FounDer express BlinDsThis month is National Window Covering Safety month, so we’ll be taking some time to draw attention to the safety standards that went into effect in 2018. Corded window coverings are now considered a potential hazard in your home. In fact, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) considers corded window coverings one of the top five hidden home hazards. Of course, this is of most concern for homes with infants and children, who may become tangled in window covering cords by accident. Because children are so curious and likely to explore their environment, they may play with cords that are too long, and in some cases, this can result in serious injury.
CHECK LIST FOR WINDOW COVERING SAFETY
Please check the following:
Make sure window coverings with operating cords areshort enough so young children can’t reach them.
Move all furniture, beds, cribs, toys, etc. far away fromwindow coverings so children can’t climb on them toreach any accessible cords.
Make sure window coverings with a continuous loopoperating cord / bead chain have a restraining device installed.
Make sure window coverings with cord stops/cordconnectors are properly assembled and functional.
Make sure window coverings with cord locks havecord cleats installed.
Make sure window coverings with accessible cordshave bottom rail warning labels attached.

To protect your loved ones, be sure to inspect the window coverings in your home for safe ty risks. The window covering industry has also launched the “Best for Kids” certification program. This program helps draw attention to the potential problems corded window cov erings pose to children, and to help you select the best and safest window coverings for your family. Here at Express Blinds, we sell many “Best for Kids” certified window coverings.
To be “Best for Kids” certified, a window covering manufacturer must submit their products to a testing facility. These products will have inaccessible inner cords but no operating cords, inner cords that are accessible but cannot form a potentially dangerous loop, or no cords at all. Window coverings that meet these requirements will then be labeled “Best for Kids” certified.
If your home window coverings have cords that are long enough to present a risk to a child or don’t meet any of the requirements for “Best for Kids” certification, we recom mend replacing them as soon as possible with safer products. In addition, be sure not to place your child or grandchild’s crib, playpen, or climbable furniture close to a window, as this may further increase the odds of your child becoming entangled in a window covering cord during the course of play.
Continuous Loop cords for window coverings may also pose a risk if they are not properly anchored. Window coverings that feature breakaways, tie-downs, cleats, and other similar safety devices don’t qualify for this program and will not be considered “Best for Kids” certified.
After the implementation of new safety standards in 2018, all new window coverings are required to meet these safety standards. Older window coverings, however, may not. While there are certainly window coverings (both new and old) that pose less risk to children in the home, products with the “Best for Kids” certification have undergone rigorous testing to verify they are as safe as possible for your child or grandchild. This certification and its accompanying label will also make it easier to find the best products for your family and your home.
Additionally, to help make window coverings as safe as possible for their children, we’ve put together and attached our window covering safety checklist to be used as a guide. Be sure to consult this checklist as you walk through your home and inspect your window coverings and cords. Please contact the manufacturer of your window cover ings for more information.
A good rule of thumb is to replace any corded window covering made before 2001, and to make sure cordless window coverings are installed in bedrooms and play areas where children will be present.
But can you really combine beauty and safety? Sound like a daunting task? Don’t worry, we’re here to help. There are many excellent window covering options available with cord less lift systems. Another excellent option to protect your little ones is to motorize your win dow coverings – the ultimate in safety and convenience! With cellular blinds, roller blinds, honeycomb shades, dual and layered shades, natural wovens, and even wood and faux wood blinds to choose from, not to mention the hundreds of colors, textures, and pattern options available, safe yet beautiful window coverings are definitely within reach.
If, however, you aren’t able to replace your window coverings, free child-safe retrofit kits can be ordered by calling 1-800-506-4636 or by visiting fulfillmentinnovations. com. These kits, once installed, can lower the risk of injury. Instructions for how to install these retrofit kits are included with the order.
And remember, if you have small grandchildren, or hope to in the future, these pre cious little ones will be even more curious in your home; the danger is even higher in your home due to the less familiar surroundings.
If it’s time to upgrade your window coverings to safer options, don’t hesitate; call Ex press Blinds, Shutters, Shades & Drapes today at 865-730-4880. Our team of designers and installers will work closely with you to provide the fashionable and safe window treatments you’ve been dreaming of.

While shedding velvet isn’t rare itself, actually seeing it happen is a rare occurrence. It doesn’t last more than a day or two, and they will rub against trees to peel it off faster. They will also eat their velvet as it is full of nutrients. As you can see, this is a fresh shed as the hard antlers are still a little red and, since this a mature buck, he knows exactly what to do to get it off faster. Even though he was facing away from me, you can tell he still has his attention on me just by looking at those ears. While some might look at this and think shedding is painful to deer, it really isn’t - this is just what bucks do. This beautiful 10 point is almost ready for the rut!
As I mentioned earlier about bachelor groups, this is only 2 of the 5 bucks that were together. The bucks in a bachelor group are often around the same age, and they will often stay with each other all spring and summer. You might notice bucks tending to each oth er and giving each other scratches, and just all being buddies. During the rut, they will separate and, after its all over with, will come back together. They will often stay in same group year after year. Most people don’t realize that bucks loose their antlers after the rut is over. A few months later, the antlers begin to regrow - repeating the whole process. A buck’s ant lers will change every year, either being bigger with more points or smaller. It is said that a buck’s antlers are among the fastest growing tissue in the animal kingdom.
By the time the rut comes to an end, some of these poor guys look quite beat up.
Most bucks will get their eyes poked by their rival’s antlers, antlers broken off, lose weight, sustain other injuries espe cially to the ears, and hopefully most will make it the next rut. But don’t worry, most injuries heal by the time the next rut rolls around. They will eat plenty and rest a lot during spring and summer, and hopefully there will also be many cute little fawns running around. As you can see, this guy is finally able to rest and the rut only left him with a small eye injury and a broken antler. Believe me when I tell you, the white-tailed deer are some of the toughest animals I know.
White-Tailed Deer
many white-tailed deer we have here in Tennessee, I never grow tired of seeing them and always have to photograph any I see. During this time of year, white-tailed bucks are preparing for the rut, which only happens during October-December and possibly into January if it’s cold enough.
As
You might notice the bucks are beginning to shed their velvet, a very soft mem brane on the antlers, as well as their coats which will turn from an orangish color to a brown color. Their velvet is loaded with blood vessels and nerves and actu ally provides nourishment and protection to the hard antlers underneath during the 5-6 month period they grow before the rut.
While their antlers are growing, you find bucks in what they call “bachelor groups;” a group of bucks all in somewhat the same age group. By the time the velvet sheds, they will often be found alone to start searching for a doe; those who were recently buddies might become rivals. Antler changes are not the only thing that happens before the rut - you may also notice how their bodies start to “beef-up” especially in the circumference of the neck which can increase 50% during the rut due to testosterone. During rut, bucks will often rub on trees with their antlers to leave their scent and to help build their neck muscles, similar to a work out - the bigger the neck, the stronger.
Rutting bucks are some of the toughest animals I’ve ever photographed. I have seen several buck battles and watch them walk away with crazy injuries and still survive. I really recommend going up to Cades Cove on a cold morning and watching these bucks in action! It’s also very important to be careful while driving during these months as deer tend to cross streets more.

Drop tines are the usually genetic, and in a protective place like Cades Cove, these bucks are able to grow to their full potential. He might be older, but I’m sure not many bucks will challenge him during rut. As you can see, he has a massive neck and chest and I’m sure is quite strong. I never got to see this guy again but will forever remember this short encounter.Autumn Change is

By tom irmenThe 2022 boating season is nearly at an end and it’s time to start thinking about winterizing our boats in prepa ration for everything that ‘Old Man’ winter can throw at us. That means hours of work cleaning, winterizing your engine and water system, detailing and hauling out that spider infested winter boat cover. But there’s an alternative to this same old annual routine thanks to Touchless Boat Cover Systems from Lifetime Docks, LLC.
Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by the Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your ve hicles. We installed a new Touchless Boat Cover System in 2020 and our 2021 and 2022 boating seasons could not have been more enjoyable.
Well the proof, as they say, was in the pudding. When we opened up our boat for the beginning of the 2021 boating sea son, we were pleasantly surprised. And although we had considered using our old winter boat cover as added protection, we avoided the temptation. We simply pressed our Touchless key fob and our boat, which was detailed last summer, ap peared, looking showroom new. No bird droppings and no spiders.
We lowered our boat lift, turned on the battery, started the blower and after the re quired interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake.
Truly the best investment we have made in years, and we plan on taking great care of our new Touchless Boat Cover System that takes such great care of our family boat. Thanks to our good friends at Lifetime Docks, LLC we plan on taking advantage of their Basic Maintenance Package which includes the lubrication of the system’s 20 to 25 pulleys, checking and adjusting all components, and a thorough test/inspection of the entire cover. Lifetime also offers a va riety of other helpful Maintenance Packages that they are anxious to share with you.
Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake in 2023 without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Bor ing at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today. Docks, LLC Boring 865.719.0027
A Season of Change - For the Better
By connie Ferraro tellico hearing solutionsAutumn has arrived, and change is in the air. The leaves on the trees are shifting through so many spectacular hues, and the rest of nature is moving into high gear to prepare for the coming winter. As the temperature be gins to fall, the summer routines have to give way. Autumn is our chance to assess where we are and make sure we’ve suf ficiently prepared for what’s around the corner, be it snow, icy roads, long nights, or for many of us, an encroaching loss of hearing.
Have you had difficulty hearing the wind rustle through the trees, or catching the different bird songs when you’re out on a walk? Are you regularly having to turn up your tv volume higher than those around you? Do loved ones you’ve al ways conversed with easily seem to mum ble now, when their speech was previous ly clear?
Changes like these are the ones we don’t like to think about. They’re uncom fortable, and we have the temptation to ignore them, hoping inaction will make them go away. Unfortunately, in the case of hearing loss, inaction all too often makes it worse and leads to other faculties being adversely affected, such as balance and cognitive function. To face chang es like these, we must choose to make changes of our own, that while sometimes off-putting, steer us once again in the right direction.
If you haven’t yet experienced the neg ative changes to your life brought on by hearing loss, the odds are high you have a dear family member or close friend currently experiencing these downward shifts. As symptoms become harder to ignore, and their day-to-day interactions become more difficult, there is a great temptation to withdraw from friends and loved ones out of a belief that pursuing participation to the same degree as before is too much of a bother now.
But that’s where we enter the picture.
Tellico Hearing Solutions was started so you could discover if a hearing device might provide the positive change you need to turn your hearing loss around.
Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, knows what it’s like to suffer from hearing loss, being a hearing instru ment wearer himself. Having experienced both the downturns of lost hearing, and the positive change of taking it back, it’s fundamental to his philosophy to offer the best solution for you and yours.
We know change is difficult. It can be downright frustrating sometimes. But we also believe that working toward positive change is crucial in all walks of life, es pecially when it comes to our ability to hear and thereby interact with the world around us. Come and see what we have to offer. We conduct testing either in our of fice, or in your home depending on what is most convenient for you. Using that new ly gleaned information, we can then set you up with a hearing aid optimized for you and your budget.
It’s our goal to provide the best avenues for positive change, but the decision rests with you whether to take the step, embrace that change, and pursue the possibility of recovery. Don’t wait for the downturns in your day-to-day routine to spiral in even worse directions. So much of our social interaction turns on our ability to hear and respond to others, and many of us don’t realize how devastating the loss of that interaction is until we experience it. If you or your family member is undergoing hearing loss, don’t wait to turn it around. Seasons of change come and go, and there
is no time like the present.
So come and get either yourself or your loved one scheduled for a free hearing test and evaluation. It’s that easy, and a small step to start heading in a positive direc tion. Get to know the thoughtful, heart-felt care you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. Call us today and take hold of a change for the better.

If you are (or were) a current hearing aid user, new technological advances, even just in the past 6 months, have made remarkable differences in the quality of sound. New technology is way beyond just making sound louder. Hearing is perception of sound, and listening is understanding and “untangling” those words.
We use the latest technology that allows us to perform complete testing either in our office or your home, whichever is more convenient and comfortable for you.

Robert Connie Ferraro, designed by FreepikNeed a Custom Closet?
4 Questions to
Ask Yourself
Are you always sorting through the never-ending amount of garments you have hanging in your closet just to put together the single outfit you had in mind? Can’t find the pants to match the shirt? Or the shoes to match the pants?
While life can be messy and disor ganized, a closet should not. Closets should make life easier. A custom closet that’s designed and organized based on your needs provides more organization and maximizes storage space, which means less frustration.
Tailored Living of Knoxville pro fessionals will meet with you in your home, listen to your specific needs, and work with you to design a space that fits your lifestyle. After a recent move to west Knoxville, Tailored Living has a larger showroom to meet with cus tomers to finalize detailed designs.
Here are some preliminary ques tions to ask yourself before calling for your free in-home consultation:
What is my budget?
While the cost depends on the size of your closet and organizational needs, a basic system with hanging and shelv ing is very affordable. Adding drawers and cabinets with doors will increase the cost. Additionally, the finish color you choose impacts the cost. White will always be less expensive than wood grains and darker finishes.
What types of clothing am I stor ing?
Some people only want to hang shirts, blouses, and pants in their closet and leave other items such as under garments stored in a bedroom dresser. If there is space available, most people now prefer to add drawers in the clos et so everything is in one place and it eliminates the need for a bulky dress er in the bedroom. Think about what types of clothing and accessories you want to store inside your closet, and it will help you put together a picture of your organizational needs.
Which accessories do I need?
Convenient accessories like jewelry drawers, fold-out ironing boards, tiltout hampers, and pullout belt racks are among the many options that bring more order to the closet and help you easily find everyday items.
What look do I want to create?
A closet that fits with your home’s interior helps you be organized without diminishing your home’s style. From a contemporary white to a rich warm wood grain finish, you can find an at tractive finish to perfectly complement your home décor. Adding extra design touches like an island, full-length mir ror, and vanity will enhance the look of your closet even more.
These are just a few ideas to consid er when thinking about a custom closet. Once you have considered your budget and what you need to store, Tailored Liv ing of Knoxville will design a custom closet system with features built around you and your lifestyle.

Iam writing about October in the mid dle of September, and it is still hot. We do, however, have the occasional nice, cool day thrown in so we don’t lose all hope. I’m ready for a real fall. For days in the 70s and nights in the 50s and pump kins and pansies and mums. How about you?
Let’s talk about fall planting first. This is typically the best time to plant trees and shrubs, because fall and winter is when the vast majority of root growth occurs. That means that any trees and shrubs planted between now through the end of Decem ber have a head start on those planted next spring. There are a few things you need to know about fall gardening, however. » October is typically our driest month. This means that you’re going to HAVE to water well. Sprinklers are inadequate for trees and shrubs because you need to get water 12" into the soil at least once a week. (As a guideline, I plan on 5 gallons on smaller shrubs, 10 on trees and large shrubs.) You can’t do that with a sprinkler! Hand water or use a drip line.
» Some of your plants probably don’t look great. This doesn’t mean they are dead or dying. We had a lot of dis eases and insects this year, so spotty, holey leaves are more common than nice green ones right now. Some trees have already defoliated. Some plants are leggy and overgrown. When we have one of those glorious cool days, I suggest you go out and do a little work. Pull weeds, trim overgrown plants (call us if you don’t know what to prune), apply an organic fertilizer, and fluff up your mulch.
You can plant other things besides trees and shrubs, but you need to do it soon. Most perennials and veggies need to get roots going before we have a frost, and our average first frost is October 23rd. Let’s discuss fall color. You know the obvious tree choices (maple, gingko, dog woods, crepe myrtles), so let’s talk about shrubs.
Camellias are one of my favorites, and we just got a new load, so let’s start there. The Camellia sasanqua is a fall bloomer
In theOctober Farm-to-Table Dinner
and tends to be a little less temperamental than the japonica, which blooms in the spring. The blooms will last for sever al weeks. Camellias prefer morning sun, afternoon shade, and acidic soil. There is a new line from Southern Living that stays a bit smaller, so the size range is 4' to 20'. Most bloom white, pink, or red. A few have variegated blooms. They are all beautiful.
I also love oakleaf hydrangeas, which turn a deep burgundy in the fall. Even af ter the leaves drop, the shape and bark are lovely. Burning bush, Virginia sweetspire, cotoneaster, and blueberries also turn red. For yellow shades, try clethra, forsythia, or witch hazel.
What if you’re looking for berries? Beautyberry is my favorite, but don’t for get viburnums, cotoneaster, chokeberry, and hollies. Mahonia also has a good ber ry set in the fall and winter.
There are also some perennials that ei ther bloom in the fall or keep their foliage. Anemones, Joe Pye weed, sedums, and turtlehead bloom now. In addition, many of the summer bloomers such as coreop sis, coneflowers, black-eyed Susan, and Russian Sage often put on a new flush as temperatures cool. Don’t forget the peren nials that are evergreen! Dianthus, some sedums, Lenten rose, heuchera, and can dytuft are just a few that stick around for the winter months. Grasses also add color and movement through the cold months.
As for annuals, you can’t beat a pansy for color. Plant them now, and they will last until next May! They do well in the ground and in containers, so stop by while the selection is good.
I will finish by reminding you that there are a few chores that need to be done in the fall:
» Clean up your flower beds. Cut back fading perennials, and clean up debris. You can leave plants that provide seeds for the birds, but get diseased leaves up.
» If you didn’t have any fungal prob lems, run over fallen leaves with your mower and then add them to your bed. They make wonderful compost!

» Pull any weeds, then apply a pre-emer gent to keep them from coming back.
» Keep harvesting cool season veggies and herbs along with any pumpkins, squash, and gourds that are still on the vine.
» Mulch bare areas to help keep the weed population down and the temperature and water levels stable.
» Don’t forget the birds! Keep those feeders clean and full. If you have a birdbath that can remain outside, keep it clean and full also. Otherwise, clean it and store it for the winter.
Please call or stop by if you have any questions. Don’t forget that we have ev erything you need for fall decor, and we will soon have everything you need for Christmas!

Step 2: Clean the floor
The best way to clean the floor is by us

Cleaning solutions that will clean while protecting the finish include am monia. Just mix five ounces of clear ammonia per gallon of water. Also, a diluted solution of a degreaser like Sim ple Green mixed with one-half-cup per gallon of water cleans well.
Step 3: Rinse and Dry
Use a hose and spray nozzle to rinse the floor. Your garage floor will have a natural slope from the back of the garage to the driveway, so start at the highest point at the back to spray and rinse. Be careful un der cabinets to limit splashing water onto wood components. Hose back and sides of the floor to the middle, and then out the door. To quickly dry the floor and ensure no standing puddles of water remain, use a floor squeegee (18 or 24 inches to speed things up) or a clean street broom to move any water out of the garage, using the same back-and-sides-to-middle routine.
Remove the plastic baggies from the ga rage door sensors and you’re done,
