lthough we were not fortunate enough to have been born and raised in East Tennessee, we were nonetheless blessed to discover its natural beauty years later. Our first exposure to East Tennessee began on a road trip to the “beach” as it is popularly referred to by native Tennesseans. Arriving in the Knoxville area in the darkness of night, we were greeted by a blinding rain storm and the news that I-40 was impassable, the result of a not so uncommon mountain rock slide. Our adventure resumed early the next morning with now clear skies and a series of detours designed to circumnavigate yesterday’s rock slide. My growing

impatience with this interruption to our vacation plans was soon replaced with the awe inspiring, natural beauty and splendor of East Tennessee that we experienced as we meandered through the foothills and mountains of the Great Smokys enroute to our final destination. It was then that we fell hopelessly in love with East Tennessee. Not many years later we sold our home and our business and moved to our new home – East Tennessee. And even though over 2 decades has passed since our very first East Tennessee adventure, we anxiously await each new morning when we welcome a brand new East Tennessee landscape masterpiece created from nature’s unlimited palette of colors, hues and textures. Monday, October 12, 2020 was one such day. We had been invited to visit Windy Hill Farm and Preserve in Loudon County by one of its owners, Steven Brewington, a 29-year-old Tennessee native, husband, dad, and visionary who possesses an uncommon passion for the

land, it’s preservation and sustainability. Our visit began with an ATV tour of this 550 acre sanctuary, where we traversed its rolling terrain, pastures, meadows, stands of timber, breathtaking views of the Great Smoky Mountains and picturesque vistas on its 2 miles of pristine shoreline along the Tennessee River. Well known to area sportsmen, Windy Hill Farm and Preserve has earned a reputation as one of the South’s premier destinations for

responsible quail hunting. Our journey began at the Lodge where quail hunting enthusiasts gather prior to their upland hunting adventure on 5 different warm season grass courses, each providing a different experience. Windy Hill Farm and Preserve welcomes groups and individuals in pursuit of both Dove and Bobwhite Quail. habitat maintenance. They know and embrace the land and the tradition of the hunt. Joined by their trained guides and dogs, Windy Hill offers sportsmen an enjoyable and fruitful quail hunting experience. Quail hunting guests meet at the Lodge the morning of their half- or full-day hunt to enjoy a hearty breakfast and to be introduced to their guides. Guests are driven to one of the preserve’s wildlife habitat areas to begin their morning hunt. Lunch is served at the Lodge for both half- and full-day excursions. Following lunch and a brief period of relaxation, full-day guests return to the field. Before departure, guests will receive their birds cleaned and packaged to take home. Next, we visited the Farmhouse Inn, a rustic, yet modern 5 bedroom home built by Steven’s grandfather, which sits atop one of the more commanding ridges on the preserve. The Inn, which overlooks the Tennessee River, features magnificent views of the river and surrounding rolling

countryside through its expansive floor to ceiling windows, great room, fireplace and 1,000 square foot panorama deck for viewing. Perfect for hosting family getaways, corporate retreats or hunting groups, the Inn offers visitors an experience that will be treasured by friends and family for many years to come. The final destination on our tour was the Home Farm where we traversed rolling pastures, crop fields, grazing cattle and heirloom hogs. We were somewhat surprised to witness a large expanse of sugarcane being grown for use in a variety of eco-friendly paper products. Currently under development, and scheduled to open in Fall 2021, are 12 new upscale cabins featuring floor to ceiling windows offering panoramic views of the Preserve. Guest packages will include Farm to Table/Field to Fork dining experiences in the Lodge, as well as agritourism programming, water and other outdoor activities. What perhaps surprised us most about this natural 550 acre sanctuary was not only its ability to protect, preserve and promote this area’s abundant wildlife, nor the views from its panoramic ridges, nor its

2 miles of Tennessee River shoreline and its often mist-shrouded lowlands. Cheekwood’s Holiday Lights to Open November 20 Annual Lights Display Returns with New Nutcracker Exhibition Nashville, Tennessee

heekwood’s Holiday Lights festival is set to return November 20 and will run through January 10, 2021. Featuring more than a million lights throughout Cheekwood’s gardens, the carefully planned course offers holiday experiences designed to appeal to all ages. Now in its sixth year, the popular wintertime program was voted Best Local Event/Festival by Nashville Scene in 2019. New this year, Cheekwood will partner with the Nashville Ballet to present a collection of traditional and non-traditional nutcrackers and costumes from Nashville’s Nutcracker throughout its Historic Mansion and Museum. The exhibit will tell the traditional holiday story through vignettes across Cheekwood’s period rooms. Also new this year, Holiday Lights will be presented alongside the works of artist Dale Chihuly with Chihuly at Cheekwood, offering a new and unique experience to this year’s display. Voted Best Art Happening by Nashville Scene in 2020, visitors can experience the highly acclaimed art exhibition and the holiday festival simultaneously across the estate and gardens through January 10. Cheekwood will activate its new Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden as Children’s Wonderland, featuring an outdoor display of custom-made LED trees with programmed lights. hanksgiving Day was always a flurry of activity in our kitchen when I was growing up. My mother wanted everything to be picture perfect for the holiday dinner, and she and my grandmother were busy all day with preparations. The turkey was stuffed and in the oven early, and the aroma of the cooking filled the house. My sister and I were in charge of setting the table. We had to be extra careful, because for holiday dinners, we used the special china, silver, crystal, and table linens. No paper napkins or plastic tablecloth for this dinner. My dad was in charge of carving the turkey and leading us in a Thanksgiving prayer. It was a special family time for all of us, and those memories come flooding back every time I look at that special set of china, which is now in my keeping. My mom and dad will not be a part of those dinners anymore, but they will always be with us in spirit. And because of Covid-19, all our Thanksgiving celebrations this year will be a bit different. What am I grateful for this Thanksgiving? I am grateful to have been a part of family gatherings and grateful to have had mom and dad as my parents. I am grateful for my husband of now 49 years and for all the friends I have made all across the country. I am grateful for my health and for living in this country where I have the opportunity to own a business. I am grateful for all those who have served and are now serving our country and honor them this Veterans Day. I am grateful for all of our advertising partners that have put their trust in us throughout the years. And I am grateful for all of our readers that support our advertisers’ businesses. Monroe County Animal Shelter Pets of the Month

uff is a male 2-year-old DSH tabby. Ready is a male 2-year-old DSH black cat. Ruff and Ready are stray cats brought into the shelter on August 17. Although they don’t have to be adopted together, it would be amazing if that happened. Both Ruff and Ready are laid back and content. They would make great companions for an older person looking for gentle, sedate company. Currently they live together and like each other, but as they are just “go with the flow” cats, they will probably be fine adopted separately. It would still be great if they lived in their forever home together. Both of these cats are just as adorable as can be. Merlin is a black 2-year-old male DSH cat found wandering around alone and lonesome on 9/25. When he looks at you with those big, beautiful eyes you can’t help but want to pet and love him. Since one of his great pleasures is being petted, it’s a win-win situation. He is a super friendly boy.

His companionable, lovable nature makes him a great fit for a home with children. He would do well with anyone that wants an adorable, sweet attention loving cat. Black cats have a bad rep through no fault of their own. Every cat has its own personality black, calico, white or orange. Talk to an owner of a black cat and you will find they are as lovable, charming and sweet as any other color cat or they might be aloof and independent just as any cat. Ready and Merlin are both solid black cats, lovable, each in their own way. Ready just wants to chill at home. Merlin is looking for a home where he can play and receive lots of attention. They are both beautiful black very adoptable cats looking for forever homes. Ruff is not black but he and Ready share the same personality traits proving black cats are no different than any other cat. There are many ridiculous myths about black cats.

Black cat owners will tell you these myths are false. They feel lucky to have an onyx gem beauty. When you meet the many beautiful black cats up for adoption, it’s obvious they are sweet, loving cats looking for good homes. unter is a one-year old beautiful male mixed breed and he weighs around 50 pounds. He came into the shelter on August 8 with a fractured back leg. It was repaired but he still has pins in his legs which will come out in a couple of weeks. He is very sweet. His tail constantly wags, and he looks for attention by putting his head in your lap. What more could you want?!!! If you are interested in Hunter, he can go home in a “foster to adopt” situation until the pins come out of his leg. Don’t you think this young pup deserves a chance? The Library Corner

he Public Library at Tellico Village is a fullservice library open to all who live in Loudon and the surrounding communities. The mission of the Library is to be the center for lifelong learning, providing the community with access to information, materials, technology and services to fulfill personal growth, cultural enrichment and knowledge in all fields of interest. This year we have had an opportunity to reinvent some of our fund raising activities. The annual book sale in April became several mini book sales during the year and our summer fundraiser, the 4B’s (Books, Beer, Bluegrass and BBQ), became a Fall Road Rally. We have also taken advantage of technology to use electronic viewing apps to experiment with presenting some of our workshops and seminars. The mini book sales are theme driven and have included a puzzle and games sale, a Truth is Stranger than Fiction sale, a Mystery Madness sale, and the October sale was History Repeats Itself. The December book sale, just in time for holiday gift giving, will take place in the Library courtyard on December 5th from 10am – 1:00pm, and its theme will be A Holiday Book Sale: Gifts for All Ages. For those looking to have a little fun while supporting the Library, November 7th is the date for a Literature and Local History Road Rally. Teams of 2-4 people will have the opportunity to explore Loudon, Lenoir City and Vonore while solving local history clues, and show off their knowledge of literature while cruising the neighborhoods of Tellico Village deciphering titles of books. Tickets are available for purchase now at the Library in Tellico Village and will be sold through the morning of the rally, Saturday, November 7. Participation in the rally and a day of fun in the outdoors will only cost you $20/person or $15 if you are a member of the Friends of the Tellico Village Library. Clues will be handed out to the teams between 10am and 11am on rally day and the solutions need to be returned between 3pm and 5pm that afternoon. The Grand Prize winner will take home a $100 gift card from Carmichael Inn in Loudon. Tickets include a 25% off coupon from AWE Hospitality, a great supporter of our Library. The coupon can be used from November 7-12. The Public Library at Tellico Village is a unique public library in that it is supported almost exclusively by the non-profit corporation known as the Friends of the Tellico Village Library (FOTVL). Ownership of the building, the collections, programs and most of the operating expenses of the library are the financial responsibility of the Friends. We encourage everyone who loves reading and supports literacy to become a Friend to keep the Library open and available to serve our community. The Friends membership drive has been taking place through September and October, and we are making our

final appeal for old Friends to renew and New Friends to join the first week in November. If you want to support our Library and the services provided to Loudon County, there will be a volunteer at the Library from 11am – 5pm, November 2-6, ready to sign you up and give you an introductory tour of the Library. What Do We Have to Be Grateful For?

e are living in a global season of lament said a local pastor recently. How then are we supposed to be grateful and live with a spirit of Thanksgiving? Look around, doom and gloom – Covid, economy, civil unrest, riots, looting, wild fires – but what do we see when we take another look …….. Industries starting up that were un-thought of just a few months ago. Who could have imagined that we would have a whole business of masks – boxes of disposable masks flying off the shelves, cottage industries of masks in all shapes, sizes and colors, you can even buy a mask to look like your pet! • Curbside pickup and home delivery of groceries and restaurants bringing meals to your front door, • Outdoor dining in coats and earmuffs? • Neighbors and churches gathering – online or 6 feet apart, but together. • Charities faced with huge losses because of regulations that don’t allow them to hold their normal fund-raisers finding new and creative ways to bring in support. • Most of us never even heard of Zoom before, yet here we are attending meetings and Bible studies on our phones and tablets. People care - How are you? In the past, that question was one of little thought. “How are you? “I am fine” was the automatic response. In today’s strange new culture, when someone asks “How are you?”, they really are asking how you are and you are willing to give an honest answer. Sometimes folks even really want to know details and are willing to share their experiences and feelings. People are talking with each other. Even those who are isolated at home can be in touch with people who really do care about them through the magic of telephones and computers. Some days are harder than others to feel gratitude and we need to search for the joy that seems to be gone. History of WATeR and its Major Programs

he founding committee who established WATeR’s By-laws established the Mission Statement to preserve and protect the environment of the Tellico Lake Watershed. The structure of the association is for program committees to be created under the umbrella of a Board of Directors. The Board therefore established three committees for program areas – collecting trash initially along the shoreline, building a trail along the eastern shoreline of Tellico Lake, and addressing aquatic environmental issues throughout the Tellico Watershed. Watershed Trash Collection - Much trash had obviously been deposited well before the lake was filled in 1979. Other litter had come from campers and boaters. Clear public support of this program confirmed the need to continue it as an annual event. Under the leadership of Bruce Rein, a committee structure was formed and links to various organizations created. After several years, leadership was transferred to Bill Webster where it resides today. Various governmental agencies and private organizations have provided support and grants for equipment and disposal of the trash. Annual support of hundreds of volunteers and the more than 140 tons of trash removed from throughout the watershed clearly demonstrate compliance with the Mission Statement. Hiking Trails - Building a hiking trail near the lake was among the projects initially considered by the WATeR Board during the first year. TVA had designated the property along the downstream half of the eastern shoreline to be undeveloped and classified as “natural resource conservation” in 1972 and confirmed in their Land Management Plan of 2000. This strip of shoreline presented an excellent location for a hiking trail since most residents were driving many miles to the National Park to hike. Several sites for this trail were considered, but the Board deferred this project initially until the association became more established to undertake such a large project. When the TVA Board ignored both land use plans and initiated sale of land to developers that was designated for natural resource conservation and was entertaining other such sales, the WATeR Board objected. To combat the claim that this shoreline property was inaccessible to the public and only of value if developed, WATeR initiated plans to construct a hiking trail to allow public access. On March 7, 2003, TVA and WATeR completed a legal Cooperative Agreement granting WATeR the right to begin construction of the East Lakeshore Trail. In anticipation of this agreement, WATeR had begun preparation by purchasing tools for construction and sending volunteers for training in building methods and safety with those building the Cumberland Trail State Park. Immediately after the TVA agreement, volunteers began mapping a route, training other volunteers, and constructing the trail. Jerry Barr was named chairman of the Trails Committee and began organizing volunteers. After several years and miles of construction, chairmanship was transferred to Bob Martin. Under the leadership of these two, the East Lakeshore Trail has become a popular local hiking trail extending about 30 miles along the shoreline and designated a National Recreation Trail. Water Quality - The third major program area established by the WATeR Board dealt with the lake and creeks of the watershed. The intent was to include all aquatic issues under the umbrella of a single committee because they are all so closely interrelated. The intent was to encompass not only water quality, but also issues related to fisheries, reservoir operations, permitting and enforcement of discharge permits, environmental policy, and any other such related aquatic issues that might develop in the future. The committee selected the title Water Quality Improvement Committee (WQIC). The Board wanted to hear from the various agencies with environmental responsibilities of Tellico Lake. Representatives of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC), and the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency (TWRA) were invited to speak and answer questions at a public meeting in June 2001 entitled the State of the Lake. About 150 enthusiastic people attended. The speakers were asked to address three issues concerning the Tellico 205 Chota Road • Loudon, TN 37774 lake Watershed - what are your agencies responsibilities, what are the environmenwww.fbctellicovillage.org • 865-408-0110 tal concerns, and how can WATeR best contribute to protecting and improving the environment. This meeting not only provided a clear understanding of how and where WATeR might contribute, but also cemented a working relationship with the government agencies charged with environmental responsibilities. Shortly thereafter, the WQIC was established with John Rogers as chair. With guidance and financial support of TVA, the committee began to develop plans to improve the water quality of Fork Creek, and then Baker Creek, both of which were classified as impaired streams by TDEC. These efforts have contributed to local government agencies receiving cost-share grants from government agencies to date totaling $1.43 million to assist farmers to modernize farming methods which will improve water quality of Fork, Baker, and Bat Creeks. As originally envisioned, in addition to supporting better farming methods, the WQIC has dealt with a diversity of aquatic related environmental concerns. The list includes preventing bank erosion, changes in TVA annual reservoir operations, restrictions for floating cabins, litigation to force compliance of a discharge permit, Asian Carp, Catfish Consumption Advisory, environmental education in schools, trends in lake quality, and most recently promoting methods for reducing pollution from urban stormwater runoff. In doing so, WATeR has developed respect and solid working relationships with Local, Social distancing measures will be in place for all services. State, and Federal environmental agencies as well as residents throughout the watershed.

Artist Michael Cheval By Randy Patterson, Boomerocity.com

here’s a famous quote about great art that says, “I know it when I see it.” I’m not a fine art connoisseur, but I do know it when I see it.

While visiting the home of Boomerocity contributor Jim Kroemer, I noticed two amazing prints he had hanging on his office wall. I inquired about them and shortly thereafter tracked down a couple of prints that were similar to Jim’s. The artist’s name is Michael Cheval, an extraordinary man with a huge, warm heart and a smile that never seems to leave his face. I reached out to Michael by phone at his New York home to chat about his work and how the pandemic has affected him and his career. Unlike many people in the world, Michael told me that the pandemic has had a positive impact on him.

“Honestly, it worked very well for me,” said Michael. “For many years, I was between galleries and between cruise ships and auctions and exhibitions. I was rarely in town. I barely was in my studio. It was very inconvenient. There was no time to concentrate; no time to just relax you know, have like a daydream, let’s say. “We had the last show in March in Florida, and I told my wife - who’s also always with me on the road - that I cannot do it anymore. I need a break. I need at least a six month break just to be in the studio. I have so many ideas, so much in my head, and I need to sit down and concentrate and do something that I eagerly wanted to do. I don’t know, maybe God heard me. I’m sorry that it happened with the pandemic, but it’s not me who created that. “I was born in 1966 in a small town in the south of Russia. It’s near Volgograd, a former Stalingrad city. You remember from history what happened to Stalingrad, and how it turned, in World War II - the Soviet Army beating the German Army? Anyway, I was born in an artistic family - full of artists, poets, and musicians. I grew up in this environment, and to me, it was natural to draw, to play instruments, to write poetry, to read a lot of books and illustrate them. So I didn’t actually think about another occupation to do in my life. “My father was an army officer. When I was 14, he was directed to go to East Germany. I spent three years in high school there, and then I served two years in the Soviet Army. I moved to Central Asia to Turkmenistan, which is right in the middle of the desert. The city was built on the oil because Soviets found the oil there. I spent eight years there then graduated school in Ashgabat. I moved back to Russia in ‘94, and in ‘97, I immigrated to United States.” Michael then shared what led to his current body of work. “I got interested in surrealism,” he said. “Actually, two factors helped me develop my style: First was my childhood dream to be an illustrator from my passion for books and the illustrations. Another was when I was 15,

my friend brought me a calendar with Dali’s works. In the Soviet Union, Salvador Dali was prohibited like many other things in fine art, literature, and music. For example, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath were prohibited, and even The Beatles were prohibited. I don’t know why. Salvador Dali’s art was prohibited, and it was impossible to find a book or even a picture of his work, especially living in a small town. And when I saw his paintings, it blew my mind. I said to myself, ‘This guy - he’s crazy, but he’s opening another dimension to me like another gate, another universe.’ “That’s how I came up with my style, which I call ‘absurdity’. Since that time, I started developing my style. When I came to the United States, I already had in mind what I wanted to do - it just needed to be more developed because, honestly, my old works - what I did in Russia - I don’t think I could successfully exhibit in the galleries where I exhibit now in the United States or in Europe, because it was very depressive - it was so dark.”

The subject of Mr. Cook’s presentation, the story of Oak Ridge, can best be described by his flier, “Imagine 75,000 Americans working in a top secret industrial site outside Knoxville during World War II. An Evening with Jack Nicklaus

ast month, the Athens Chamber welcomed Jack Nicklaus to the 14th Annual Benefit to the delight of over 900 people. The event, originally scheduled for June 27, was held in a safe and clean environment at McMinn County High School. The Chamber staff and volunteers did a wonderful job of making sure everyone had a good, enjoyable time while being safe. Masks were required upon entry and safe distancing was encouraged. As far as our special guest, Mr. Nicklaus was wonderful! He spent the first hour greeting our VIPs and sponsors with pictures and autographs. After dinner, we ventured down the hall to the gymnasium where he was introduced to a loud standing ovation. For the next hour, he answered questions from our moderator, Steve Hartline, and shared many stories. Jack Nicklaus’ path to being a golf legend began when he was 10 years old. As a young boy, he had stuck his dad with a bill after hitting $350 worth of golf balls. Growing up, Nicklaus said his best sport was baseball. He also payed football in high school and was recruited to play basketball at Ohio State. He decided to go into golf essentially out of a process of elimination considering his options. Nicklaus noticed the golf “seemed to fit what I could do.” Nicklaus said the people who made the most impact on his life were his father and mother and his wife, Barbara. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Asked the secret of a successful marriage, he said it is 95% give, 5% take on both sides. And of his 18 major championships, he noted that he maybe had won three of those without the support of his wife. He also talked about how he prepared for major tournaments, and it’s a plan he followed after winning his first two Masters in 1963 and 1965. In both of those, he had

skipped the tournament from the week before and instead scouted Augusta National that week. And that is how he prepared for majors ever since, by scouting the course the week before. his is the time of year when thoughts turn to helping others in need, whether with monetary donations, volunteer time, or charitable legacy planning. While you are making your charitable giving plans, consider these tips to maximize the tax benefit of your good deeds: • Rather than donating cash to your favorite charity, donate appreciated investments instead. Perhaps you bought stock many years ago that is now worth much more than you paid for it. If you give the stock to the non-profit, and they cash it in, they don’t have to pay the tax on the capital gain. • If you are taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your IRAs, and in turn writing a check to your church or charity, wait a minute! You need to know about the Qualified

Charitable Distribution rules where the IRS allows you to donate your RMDs (up to $100,000) directly to your non-profit, and not count that RMD as income on your tax return. Who knew the IRS could be so kind? This is a great way to restore a tax deduction for charitable giving that you aren’t otherwise receiving if you don’t itemize your deductions. (And if your financial advisor hasn’t told you about this little gem, you might need to reassess the value your advisor is bringing to the table.) • Perhaps you would like to leave some money to your church or charity in your will. Great idea! However, instead of gifting through your will, designate your non-profit as a beneficiary on your IRA. Why? Because IRA assets are taxable as ordinary income to your heirs, but not taxable to your favorite charity. Let your heirs inherit your after-tax investments instead. • Or maybe you like the idea of leaving some of your IRA money to your favorite charity but hate to think of short-changing your heirs. One solution is to use a portion of your RMDs and buy permanent life insurance. Then you can freely give that taxable IRA to your non-profit knowing that your family will receive a tax-free life insurance payout. Now everyone is happy! (Except perhaps the IRS) Tax planning and charitable giving is not just for the rich – it’s for anyone who wants to choose where their hard-earned money goes – to taxes or to charities. November In the Garden

hat a lovely fall we are having! It is wonderful to be able to go outside without freezing or having a heat stroke! November is an important month in the garden because it is the month when it is time to “put your garden to bed.” There are steps that you can take to make the transition into the cooler months easier for your plants and to prepare your yard for next year. The first step is to go out and walk all the way around your yard. Peer into the nooks and crannies and see what is going on. Look up and check for damage to branches and trunks of trees. Look for signs of critters such as moles and voles. Do you have disease or insect problems that need to be addressed? Are there plants that should be pruned/divided/removed? Make notes and give yourself a to-do list for pretty days this winter when you have spring fever and are desperate to work outside. Step two is a final clean-up. Pick up any plant debris that has fallen and remove all that show signs of disease and insect problems. Cut back dead or dying foliage on your perennials, but be careful not to cut into the crown (the low growth at the base). Remove any annuals that have managed to hold on. Trim off dead or damaged branches on shrubs. Step three is to add compost or other amendments to your soil. Leaf mulch, topsoil and decomposed manure can also be used. If you add them now they will break down over the winter and the nutrients will be available to your plants in the spring. It is critical that you get rid of the weeds that are already starting to pop up. Pull or spray them and then apply a pre-emergent such as Preen to make your

It is important that you re-apply every 3 months to keep those weed seeds from germinating. Now that you have everything all nice and cleaned up, it is a good time to plant! Trees and shrubs will get roots established before summer if put in now. Many perennials also do well if planted in the fall. Pansies and violas can still be planted to give you a wonderful show of color during the colder months. Bulbs should be planted by the end of November or placed into the refrigerator to chill. The final step is to mulch your beds to keep soil temperature and moisture levels stable through our roller coaster winters. (If you applied mulch in the spring and still have an adequate lay-

er, take a rake and “fluff” the mulch. It becomes very hard and compacted over the summer.) 3”-4” is all that you need, and remember not to pile the mulch around your trees! It should look more like a donut rather than a volcano. Hardwood mulch, pine needles or leaf mulch works well. Remember to run over your leaves with a lawn mower to chop them up before using them! Leaves that aren’t chopped or that bury your grass will kill your lawn. Rodney blows ours out into the lawn, runs over them a couple of times with the mower, and then blows them back into the beds. Don’t forget to keep our feathered friends in mind during the upcoming months. All ceramic or concrete birdbaths should be drained and stored for the winter, but think about buying a small plastic or metal replacement.

Birds get thirsty and dirty in the winter too! It is also critical that you keep your feeders clean and full as natural sources of food become scarcer. I will finish by reminding you that we are a great source for your holiday decorating needs. We have Poinsettias from our family farm in Fentress County and freshly cut trees and greenery from a farm in North Carolina. Next month I will give you a detailed list of care instructions for holiday plants. Until then, I wish all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving!

So what can you do, particularly the elderly population, to protect yourselves from this serious disease? First, let’s look at some statistics. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), just under 10% of the American population have some form of diabetes, 25% of which are people 65 and older. Some experts project those numbers to increase exponentially as our elderly population increases. In its simplest form, diabetes affects how your body turns food into energy. Food is broken down into sugar (glucose) and is then released into your bloodstream. When your blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin to allow your body to use that glucose as energy. Volunteers Needed for 31st Ijams River Rescue November 21

olunteer registration is now open for the 31st Ijams River Rescue, presented by Home Federal Bank and TVA, on Saturday, November 21st, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ijams Nature Center’s annual communitywide event focuses on removing trash and tires from 32 sites along the Tennessee River and its creek tributaries from the river’s headwaters in Knoxville to the shores of Loudon County. “This event was originally scheduled for March 28th, but the pandemic forced us to cancel it,” Ijams Executive Director Amber Parker said. “Because the cleanup is outside and volunteers can distance themselves from each other or work with family members and friends in their own ‘bubble,’ it’s something we can do safely to bring the community together and make a difference.” Volunteers can register using an online, interactive site map accessible from the Ijams River Rescue page on Ijams’ website at https://www.ijams.org/ijams-river-rescue. Slots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and typically book quickly. The deadline to register is November 14th or until all slots have been filled. Those wishing to sign up as a group should have all members register individually so that they can complete a waiver and provide personal contact information should Ijams need to communicate with everyone at a particular site. The 31st annual Ijams River Rescue is sponsored by Home Federal Bank, TVA, City of Knoxville Stormwater Management, First Horizon Foundation, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, CAC AmeriCorps, Knoxville TVA Employees Credit Union, Waste Connections, and the Water Quality Forum.
