HEN MOMTREPRENEUR Mary Ellen Nichols first launched Christmas Decor Plus More in 2020, she approached this new venture with her same unbridled level of enthusiasm that has marked her entire business career. Mary Ellen started in business as a commercial banker with a large regional bank, later leaving to acquire multiple The UPS Store franchises with her husband, John. With their desire to diversify and Mary Ellen’s love for everything Christmas, they acquired an existing business, Christmas Decor of Knoxville, in 2020. For 15 years, Christmas Decor of Knoxville had focused primarily on holiday outdoor decorating and lighting. But why stop on just the outside? Mary Ellen and new business partner, Linda Heaton Ridings, soon expanded their services to include interiors with their newly launched Design Decor, an allinclusive concierge decorating company specializing in seasonal and event décor and interior decorating. Linda is also no stranger to Knoxvillians. The creative genius of Design Decor, Linda is the former owner of Knoxville-based Elegant Essentials, master florist, interior decorator, former Executive Director of Marketing for East Tennessee PBS, master networker, full-time realtor, culinary artist, wife, and mom. Ask a busy woman, RIGHT? In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are excited to bring you this recent interview with two of Knoxville’s busiest women and dynamic duo, Mary Ellen Nichols and Linda Heaton Ridings. Whether you’re considering a future event or if your holiday décor or home’s interior requires a much needed boost, this interview will be sure to please.

MV: First of all, for all the aspiring women entrepreneurs out there, what motivated you to launch your own businesses? Mary Ellen: As a commercial banker, I first became inspired by my almost daily interactions with small business owners. I understood their commitment and responsibilities to their businesses, but I also saw the enthusiasm for their futures that only seemed to be limited by the size of their dreams. Linda: My mom said that I was born an entrepreneur. Self-employment soon became an outlet for my creative side. A traditional career path might have stifled my creativity by placing me in a box. Regardless of your age, it’s never too late to venture out on your own and to pursue your dreams! MV: Does Design Decor provide services to both residential and business clients? Linda: Absolutely! Homeowners and business owners understandably become frustrated with the time required to properly decorate the interior and exterior of their homes and businesses for the holidays. They also get bored with their two decades old ornaments and seasonal décor. Mary Ellen: We take the frustration out of seasonal and event decorating. We do it all, leaving you with nothing but the fond memories of a very special event or seasonal celebration enjoyed with close friends and family. Continued on page 2A ...

MV: To be clear, Design Decor is not just limited to the Christmas holiday, correct? Mary Ellen: Correct. For any season and any reason, we can assist you in finding the perfect décor to fit your unique style. From Christmas to graduations, from autumn celebrations to weddings, and from grand openings to anniversaries, our talented and experienced decorators will inspire your imagination. Linda: And it all begins with our free consultations, where we listen to your dreams and offer you the benefit of our decades of planning expertise to create a special or seasonal event designed to exceed your wildest expectations! MV: What options are available? Linda: For our seasonal clients, there are a variety of interior and exterior packages available. We help you select a signature theme

- say Champagne Taste or Crystal Christmas, just to name a few - which can be leased or purchased. We create, install, maintain, remove, and store your themed décor. Also, you’ll especially like our protective floor coverings used during setups and removals, which help ensure that not one piece of sparkle or glitter remain after we’ve gone! Mary Ellen: We do everything from A to Z, freeing you up to enjoy your holidays or special events. We also offer a wide variety of options and price points for every budget. All you need to do is to enjoy your stress-free holiday or event! MV: What else would you like our readers to know about Design Decor? Mary Ellen: We encourage your readers to visit our recently remodeled retail showroom at 627 American Glass Way in Knoxville.

We’re located just off the I-40 and Lovell Road interchange on Outlet Drive. Our showroom features a variety of beautifully decorated vignettes designed to inspire you into your world of endless possibilities. Linda: We offer a full range of interior decorating services as well. Our experienced decorators can help you achieve that designer-inspired look that you’ve been dreaming of, whether it’s a single room or your entire home. Visit us online at www.designdecorknoxville. com, where you can purchase a wide variety of seasonal and interior design décor items all personally selected by Mary Ellen and myself. MV: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Linda: We hope that you will take the time to visit our designer showroom Tuesday through

With Just a Few Short Weeks to Thanksgiving We Remain So Ever Grateful

espite a barrage of seamlessly negative news emanating from the media, we do indeed have so much to be grateful for as Americans. I am reminded of just how blessed we are each and every morning when we are greeted by yet another spectacular East Tennessee sunrise reigning over our mist shrouded, rolling landscapes, our over 350 miles of pristine Tellico Lake shoreline and our stunning Smoky Mountains. Is it any wonder that in a recent poll of most popular states to relocate, that our Volunteer state ranked fourth? And yet while finishing behind three other popular destinations, Tennessee ranked number one in the hearts of our good friends, Tim and Kathy Rose, who only moved to Tellico Village from Northern California just a few short weeks ago. Our good friends of 30+ years, you can rest assured that you’ll be seeing a great deal of Kathy and Tim, both of whom enjoy immersing themselves in a variety of local church and community activities. In fact, if you attend the Tellico Community Players upcoming production of Undercover Christmas opening on December 2nd, you’ll have an opportunity to see Kathy perform as Virginia Mae Bell. Kathy has a passion for the theater where she has performed, built sets, sewn costumes and directed numerous shows. We are also thankful for another role that Tim and Kathy will be performing in the community as they join our leadership team at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views. Both as entrepreneur, civic, and faith leaders, the Rose’s will be a welcomed addition to our creative team. As we enter into our 22nd year of business, we remain grateful for the outpouring of encouragement and support that so many of you have offered over these many years. And as we celebrate Veterans Day on November 11th, let’s be sure to thank our veterans to whom we owe so much. Their selfless service and dedication has secured a level of freedom that many others throughout our world long for.

Oriental Rug Washing is Truly an Art Which Combines Today’s Technology with Old-World Craftsmanship

O

riental rugs continue to grow in popularity among homeowners and business owners. Often referred to as art for our floors, Oriental rugs embrace centuries-old hand-craftsmanship that remains literally unchanged. These rugs combine all-natural fiber, primarily wool, all-natural dyes, and are still hand-knotted on looms as they have been for many hundreds of years. Oriental rugs can last almost indefinitely when well cared for and have earned a reputation for being extremely durable. In fact, many Oriental rug owners pass on their treasured rugs as family heirlooms to be enjoyed by future generations. But these durable and long-lasting rugs also have a gentler side. Their all-natural fibers and dyes make proper, periodic care all the more important. Unlike their wall-to-wall cousins, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using traditional carpet cleaning methods, as they would likely be damaged in the process. Genuine Oriental rugs can only be thoroughly and safely cleaned by “washing” them – a process that can’t be properly performed by even the most ardent DIYer. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have used our more than three decades of experience to create a

proprietary 11-step rug washing process to safely clean even your most valuable Oriental rugs. You can watch our informative rug washing video online at www.superiorofknoxville.com. But our commitment to you doesn’t end there. We routinely attend training seminars offered by Oriental rug washing experts from across the nation to learn how to improve our craft. We also make significant financial investments in the latest, state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, which further enhance our already modern, state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique located in Farragut. Recently we have invested in the latest technological

advancements in the Oriental rug washing marketplace, including the “Marinator Decon System,” which enables us to wash the most difficult area of any rug, the inner rug fibers. The Decon System is perfect for the removal of pet contamination. In addition, we have just installed the Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor which directs a gentle cascade of 100% pure, clean water down the sloped floor and over and through your rug to ensure that it is as bright and clean as possible. Other rug washers use an immersion pool to wash your rug. Comparing the Centrum to an immersion pool is like comparing your morning shower to a bath. Be sure also to ask about our large selection of rug cushions and the application of rug protectant, both of which are designed to prolong the life of your Oriental and area rugs Committed to protecting your precious heirlooms for generations to come, why not trust the family that thousands of other Knoxville area families have trusted since 1985: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning? Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

Don’t Guess About Your Financial Future, Plan For It

Helping Your Aging Parents

T

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

he passage of time can catch you off-guard – years fly by and suddenly you realize that your parents might need help when it comes to managing their finances. Whether that time is imminent or somewhere in the unknown future, a critical first step is simply having a conversation with your parents about their finances. Make sure you are covering these topics: • Bill paying: Do they have enough current income to pay their bills, and do they have a process to make sure payments don’t accidentally get missed? This is especially important for annual life insurance or longterm care insurance premiums. Policies they have been paying for years could lapse due to non-payment. • Do they have critical legal documents in place? We all think of a will as important, but do they have a financial power of attorney that will allow someone to act in their place if they are incapacitated? How about

H

a living will and a healthcare power of attorney? • Do they have long-term care insurance that can help pay for their care later in life? It’s good to know what your financial responsibility might be in the future if they haven’t made any long-term care plans. And many plans pay for in-home care, so it’s good to read the policy to see what it covers. • Are their IRA beneficiary designations up to date? Keep in mind that beneficiary designation forms override the will for IRA accounts. Additionally, there are critical tax consequences when IRA accounts are passed to the next generation without properly completed beneficiary forms. • Do you know where their investments and life insurance or long-term care insurance policies are? I have witnessed first-hand how hard it will be for you – as the adult child financial caregiver – if you have to search for this information. • Are accounts titled in such a way that the will would be circumvented? For instance, if your mom has a joint bank account with your sister, your sister will

own the entire account at your mom’s passing, no matter what the will says. Talking about money with your parents can be tough, but who knows? They might be waiting for you to start the conversation. And if you need help managing a financial transition in your life, give me a call. I can help make the complex decisions easier. Easily Overcome Anxious Moments at the Dentist

aving first begun her search for a new family dentist online, Vicki Ailey found Heritage Family Dentistry. “They had all five-star reviews,” she said. “Heritage Family Dentistry is a wonderful practice. I have major ‘dental anxiety,’ and they always put me at ease. They treat you like family. Dr. Bradshaw and his team are very gentle and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire procedure.” Vicki’s first procedure was a dental implant. Dental implants are fast becoming the preferred treatment option for patients with missing teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between dental implants and their natural teeth. And, more importantly, dental implants continue to promote healthy bone density in the jaw. In the absence of natural teeth or dental implants, bone density can deteriorate, often creating a sunken or premature aging appearance. “Dr. Bradshaw is also very informative,” said Vicki. “He takes the necessary time to explain everything in detail and always makes certain that you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and procedure. “Heritage Family Dentistry is the best dental office I have been to. I have moved often and have seen at least 10 dentists. I would absolutely recommend them to others. They are the best dentistry team I’ve ever experienced.” Patients at Heritage Family Dentistry can further relax with warm neck wraps and their choice of soothing music or nature television. Grace – what does that mean? 10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, November, 2021

W

By Donna Navratil

e frequently and casually talk about the grace of God, but what does that mean to Christians? The definition of grace in the Oxford Dictionary as relates to Christians is “the free and unmerited favor of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.” Even as the world seems in turmoil, we can find the many ways that God has granted us grace and as recipients of grace, we are called and privileged to grant grace to others. At Shepherd of the Lake, we are a small congregation by some standards, yet we share God’s love in astounding ways both locally and globally. Many of our outreach ministries have been activated by just one member with a passion for that ministry. One noteworthy example is Water to Thrive (watertothrive.org), a faith-based American nonprofit that funds the building of wells in eastern Africa and

spreads awareness about the African water crisis. We began with one couple asking for donations to build one well. At present, the Shepherd of the Lake congregation has funded the money to build ten wells that are currently providing clean drinking water to more than 4,442 people who previously had no local access to life-giving water. This number more than likely serves 3 to 4 times that many as the wells are shared with neighboring communities. The 11th well has been funded and construction will begin shortly. Locally, our members participate in many charitable and caring organizations in both Loudon and Monroe Counties, including: • Our PLACE Adult Day Center (Loudon, Monroe, and Roane counties) • Kiddie Kingdom Day Care (Philadelphia, TN) • Knoxville Area Rescue Ministries (KARM)

Gail Henley And Volunteers Honored By Good Shepherd Center

G

ail Henley was named Volunteer of the Year by the Good Shepherd Center, Monroe County’s non-profit human services organization. The announcement was made at a picnic at Kefauver Park honoring the Center’s many volunteers. Good Shepherd Center, which serves over 1,000 people each month, has about 100 volunteers who manage and distribute the free food and clothing and provides additional services to those in need. Volunteers pick up food from area grocery stores, a farm market and restaurants; unload food trucks from Second Harvest; work in the office; and help distribute USDA food to the community on the fourth Friday of each month. “Since the COVID epidemic, Gail has gone way beyond the call of duty,” said Good Shepherd’s Executive Director Tina Smith. “She’s been helping with the food and clothing, doing inventory, serving as receptionist, doing intake information for new clients, coordinating the use of the van to pick up food, and serving as the volunteer coordinator – and serves as member of our Board of Directors-all of this as a volunteer!” In addition to helping at Good Shepherd Center, Henley is involved as an advocate with CASA Monroe which helps abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court. She is on the board of Homeless Management of Monroe County and serves as an Elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Madisonville and helps with their Community Café which offers supper on Tuesday evenings to anyone wanting a hot meal at no charge. When she’s not doing community work, Henley stays active as a member of the Sequoyah Hiking Club as well as keeping up with her 3 children and their families who are raising her 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. “We have such a wonderful group of volunteers, which makes my job easier because they are so helpful, cooperative and kind,” said Smith. “We could not serve this community without them.” “When you distribute about 30,000 pounds of food every month, you need a lot of help,” concluded Margaret Cummings, president of the board of Good Shepherd Center which sponsored the Volunteer picnic. “We always need more volunteers, and I would urge anyone with a heart for those in need, to join us. We have a great group of people here.” For more information on volunteering and a tour at Good Shepherd Center, call the office in Madisonville at (423) 420-8888 Monday through Thursday 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Tellico Village pet owners experienced a day of joy and gratitude on October 4 as they brought their pets to the Toqua Pavillion for the annual Blessing of the Animals. Pastors from Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church and the Tellico Village Community Church officiated for this special service honoring St. Francis of

Assisi, patron saint of animals and environment. He could be viewed as the original Earth Day advocate…..Francis cared for the poor and sick, he preached sermons to animals and praised all creatures as brothers and sisters under God. As smiling owners and tail-wagging pets gathered together to celebrate this day, blessings abounded. Generous donations were received to be distributed to the local animal shelters to help those animals who have no home. Jesus says, “As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you” (John 20:21). God’s mission of grace and love is for the entire world. Shepherd of the Lake 865-816-4756 www.shepherdofthelaketn.org

Fashion Sense Kick Off Your Holiday

D

Let vegan leather add sheen to your holiday fashions.

I

Season in Style!

E COR AT IO N S A R E N’ T just to be used in your home or on your tree this year - holiday fashions are all about shine! Whether you choose vegan leather for a little bit of sheen, either on tops or the popular jogger bottom, you’re right on target. Enjoy the inventive details... laser cut motifs, smooth as leather to the touch, and cutting-edge materials. Look for the shimmer of gold or silver threads woven through fabrics as lurex becomes a key eye-catcher. A soft shimmer pervades the fabric whenever even a small touch of lurex weaves its way into a simple design... head-to-toe glamorous! The holiday sweater as we once knew it has softened into the sporty chic look that is now so popular. Effortless dressing with a clean style, maybe in French terry or soft cotton knit, is that dressed down look we have all grown to love.

This style is perfect for the woman on the go... lunch with friends, holiday shopping, dinner out, or maybe all three! These casual but polished looks are perfect no matter what the day holds. Pants are running the gamut this holiday season with so many lengths and widths available. A full leg pant or a skinny? Let our sales associates help you choose the best look for your occasion and your body. Remember, that’s what we’re here for and what we love to do... find the best look for you! We look forward to helping you shop for yourself and your loved ones this holiday season. We carry a wonderful selection of “easy” gift items, including Brighton jewelry, Joy Susan handbags, Capri Blu candles, and more... perfect for any and every woman on your holiday shopping list! We look forward to seeing you soon!

You Trim Your Tree – We’ll Trim Your Waist!

f your tree and your waist could benefit from some trimming this holiday season, we invite you to call your compassionate and caring medical professionals at Farragut Family Practice for your free consultation. While they won’t be able to help you with your tree, they can certainly help you to start trimming your waistline before the holidays. As is so often the case with today’s advances in medical technology, new technologies emerge that allow physicians to offer new treatments to their patients that were unavailable just a few short years ago. One such technology available today is truSculpting 3D, an innovative, non-surgical treatment that helps to contour your body regardless of your shape or fitness level. Available exclusively at Farragut Family Practice, Dr. Kevin Buchanan, MD and his team of caring and compassionate healthcare providers, offer patients a truSculpting 3D experience that can produce impressive results in as few as four 45-minute treatments and with no downtime, allowing patients to significantly eliminate fat in stubborn areas around their abdomen and flanks, where no amount of exercise and dieting succeeds. Perhaps the most remarkable outcome from the truSculpting 3D experience extends far beyond just your enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence. It also encourages many patients to focus on their overall well-being, including proper nutrition and exercise, which can lead to a more fulfilling life and greater longevity. Clinically proven to be safe and effective, truSculpting 3D permanently eliminates body fat in stubborn areas by up to 24% while also tightening the skin, producing quick results in most patients

– usually within 12 weeks. “After thoroughly evaluating a variety of non-surgical body sculpting and contouring systems,” said Dr. Buchanan, “we chose truSculpting 3D for a variety of reasons but, in particular, because of its ability to tighten and improve skin tone, as well as to eliminate stubborn fat cells, and truSculpting 3D is usually far less expensive for our patients. In addition, as with any treatment, patients often have some level of apprehension. Fortunately, our patients experience the peace of mind that comes from knowing that we have a medical provider on site.” “Patients share their excitement in fitting into clothing that they haven’t worn in years, especially their skinny jeans. We have had several women tell us that they now wear sleeveless shirts after receiving treatments on their arms, which both eliminated stubborn fat and tightened their skin. Many truSculpting 3D patients also have reported that in addition to the elimination of stubborn fat cells, they have observed a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.” To learn how you too can benefit from a truSculpting 3D experience before the holidays, you are encouraged to call Farragut Family Practice today at 865-675-1593, ext. 224 and ask for Ashley to set up your free consultation appointment. Holiday Visitors?

5 Ways To Make Them Fall In Love With Your Space

A

lthough in-law jokes abound -- and usually in bad taste -most families like each other and spending time together is important. When your in-laws or other family members come to visit you want to ensure they have a good time at your house. The hustle and bustle of more people in the house is both fun and sometimes anxiety-inducing. Tailored Living of Knoxville, your local whole-home organizing company, has some suggestions to help you stay calm and get your home ready for family visits by enhancing organization to create a calm and comfortable home for everyone’s benefit.

Welcoming Sleeping Space

Nothing makes a guest feel more unwelcome than to be a burden at bedtime. The “where can we stick you?” attitude would put anyone off. Making sure that your guests have appropriate, comfortable sleeping quarters will add to their appreciation of your home and you! If there are no extra beds, you can convert a home office, craft room, or playroom into a guest room when needed with a custom Murphy Bed that disappears when your guests are gone. Also, make sure to have extra pillows of varying firmness.

Think Like a Resort Hotel

Adding amenities make guests feel like they are in a five-star hotel. First, be sure they have closet and drawer space to use so they aren’t living out of suitcases. Then create a welcome basket with shampoo, soap, a new toothbrush, toothpaste—things they might have forgotten to pack.

Respect Morning Rituals

Check ahead of time to see what they prefer in the morning—coffee or tea, and if they use milk, creamer or sweeteners. We all have a preferred beverage for starting our days and this small act of kindness will make them feel more at home.

Have a User-Friendly Pantry

Take a look at your pantry. Could someone visiting find what he or she wants? Are cereals in one place? Are all the snacks in one section? A well-stocked, organized pantry invites everyone to help themselves when the need-to-feed strikes. Give a quick “pantry tour” so they don’t feel like trespassers and won’t be hesitant to serve themselves.

Create a Technology Information Sheet

Every home is different with how technology functions for TV viewing, Wi-Fi access and smart-home systems. Save everyone repeating instructions, frustration and embarrassment when things don’t work by creating a cheat-sheet about your home’s technology with passwords and steps to make everything work. If an impending visit from family has you questioning the suitability of your home for company, maybe it is time to evaluate your space. From your closet to your pantry, the design professionals at Tailored Living of Knoxville will take time to understand your family needs and style preferences to create an organizational solution that is tailored to your needs.

I

recall the event as if it had occurred only yesterday, although several years have passed. We were at a social gathering seated at a large table of ten. Robert was struggling to keep up with the group’s discussion. He kept leaning over to me asking what the others had said. He also suggested that I was mumbling and he could not understand me. We had ourselves talked about his difficulty following conversations with others. Was it because of background distractions? Were others talking over each other? Were others mumbling? Were others speaking quietly so as not to disturb others in the room? When we drove home that evening, I shared with Robert my observations and my concerns. He is very sociable and really enjoys opportunities to socialize with old and new friends alike. This and other experiences, in addition to his need to turn up the volume on the radio while driving or our television at home to uncomfortable levels, led me to conclude that he was likely suffering from the early stages of hearing loss. Our conversation on our return home that evening was positive. I credit Robert’s response in part to the research I had done online. I learned that how you approach this oftentimes touchy issue with your spouse or loved one could make all the difference in the world in their outcomes. The important thing I learned was to be supportive, caring and most of all loving. This was just one of life’s many speed bumps that we will experience in our lives. With proper diagnosis and treatment we were confident that Robert’s hearing loss could be overcome. I also learned to avoid confrontation, like complaining about the

volume on the TV being too loud or acting annoyed when he asked me to repeat what others might have just said. Fortunately, Robert sought treatment, his loss of hearing was confirmed, and he was fitted with hearing instruments. I wish you could have seen the smile on his face when his hearing was restored. Not only did our lives return to normal, but we also headed off some of the potential problems like speech impairment and balance that often result from untreated hearing loss. But the good news didn’t end there. Robert was so impacted by his own personal experience that he decided to pursue a career as a Hearing Instrument Specialist, convinced that his own hearing loss would help him to assist others to overcome their own hearing loss in ways that other specialists simply could not relate to. Since then, I have heard from many clients’ spouses that they have gone through the identical experiences as I had. And they tell me that it is a real chore! It is hard to repeat an entire evening back to someone! I personally now have a lot more fun when we both converse with a group socially. And obviously he does too. If you suspect that you or a loved one are experiencing hearing loss, I encourage you to act immediately. The sooner you act, the better the results. Why not let Robert’s own story become a first step on your own personal journey to A Life Worth Hearing? And remember, Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Why Not Let Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning Help You to Prepare for This Year’s Holiday Season

M

By Kerry McDuffie – Owner – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

any of us have already begun planning for holiday events and family gatherings. As a parent and grandfather, I know just how important this time of the year is but also how stressful holiday preparation can be as well. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for the holidays for more than 35 years. So why is it important to clean your home’s carpets and Oriental and area rugs before your guests arrive? Well, for starters, to enhance the appearance of every room in your home. Also, if children and grandchildren play on your rugs and carpeting, you’ll want these surfaces to be as clean and healthy as they can be. There’s also a practical side. Well-maintained carpets and rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. You see, abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants are tracked into our homes and onto our carpeting and rugs from the bottoms of our shoes and our pet’s feet. Not only do these elements contaminate our carpets and rugs, making them look dull and dingy, but many of these contaminants are abrasive in nature and can permanently damage carpeting and rug fibers. Also, some of these tracked-in elements are snow and ice removal chemicals that can chemically bond to your home’s carpet and Oriental rug fibers, shortening their life expectancy. Our truck-mounted cleaning system uses today’s state-of-the-art technology to remove dirt and grime that other systems simply leave behind. Also, our Oriental and area rug washing boutique uses an 11-step proprietary cleaning process that can safely clean most rugs that might just become a family heirloom some day. Also, for you dog lovers, if Fido has had an accident on one of your valued Oriental or area rugs, call us immediately. Pet urine alters a rug’s pH and can negatively impact your rug’s color stability, causing color bleeding. So act quickly! Time is your biggest enemy. If you can use a little help preparing for the holidays this year – and who couldn’t – remember the company who has earned a superior reputation since 1985 for unmatched superior cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. We are so thankful for all our friends like you and your family who have entrusted us to take care of your cleaning needs for more than three decades. May your holiday season be a blessed time with family and friends. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning 865-691-5686 www.superiorofknoxville.com info@superiorofknoxville.com

It’s Almost Time to Winterize the Family Boat By Tom Irmen

T

he 2021 boating season is nearly at an end and it’s time to start thinking about winterizing our boats in preparation for everything that ‘Old Man’ winter can throw at us. That means hours of work cleaning, winterizing your engine and water system, detailing and hauling out that spider infested winter boat cover. But there’s an alternative to this same old annual routine thanks to Touchless Boat Cover Systems from Lifetime Docks, LLC. Like other area boaters, we frequently see boats in docks, both private and some community docks that are protected by the Touchless Boat Cover System. The concept is a simple one...create a garage for your boat that protects your watercraft like your home’s garage protects your vehicles. We installed a new Touchless Boat Cover System in 2020 and our 2021 boating season could not have been more enjoyable.

Well the proof as they say was in the pudding. When we opened up our boat for the beginning of the 2021 boating season, we were pleasantly surprised. And although we had considered using our old winter boat cover as added protection, we avoided the temptation. We simply pressed our Touchless key fob and our boat, which was detailed last summer, appeared, looking showroom new. No bird droppings and no spiders. We lowered our boat lift, turned on the battery, started the blower and after the required interval, started our engine. We were off for an enjoyable day on the lake. Truly the best investment we have made in years and we plan on taking great care of our new Touchless Boat Cover System that takes such great care of our family boat. Thanks to our good friends at Lifetime Docks, LLC we plan on taking advantage of their Basic Maintenance

Package which includes the lubrication of the system’s 20 to 25 pulleys, checking and adjusting all components, and a thorough test/inspection of the entire cover. Lifetime also offers a variety of other helpful Maintenance Packages that they are anxious to share with you. Prepare for a season of fun in the sun on the lake in 2022 without the long hours of detailing your boat by calling Patrick Boring at Lifetime Docks, LLC. Avoid the rush by calling Patrick today. November In the Garden

W

by

Lisa Grugin

e have had a beautiful fall so far! It has been a bit warmer than some of my workers would prefer, but I am a warm weather lover. I turn cranky when it gets cold.

I know that many of you will be switching into holiday mode once that calendar page turns to November, but there are still plenty of things that can be done in your yard. This is the month to start “putting your garden to bed.” What does that mean? It means doing a few little things that will help your plants make it through the winter without any worries. ✻ The first thing of course is a good walk about. You know the drill: Look up, down, and all around to see what is hiding. Check trees, shrubs, perennials, vegetables, and annuals to see how they are doing. Are they happy or sad? Do you have insects, diseases, damage, etc.? Let us know if you have questions about how to address those issues. ✻ The second thing is a good cleanup. You can dramatically reduce your insect and disease problems next year by cleaning up plant debris this year. Insect eggs and fungal spores like to hang around on old leaves during the winter so they can emerge to a host next spring. ✻ Cleanup also involves weeding. I know you are tired of pulling weeds, but letting them go to seed will make your life much harder next year. Get as many out as possible and apply a

Visit us for Your Holiday Decorations! ALL POINSETTIAS ARE GROWN ON OUR FAMILY FARM CHRISTMAS TREES AND GREENERY ARE FROM A FARM IN NORTH CAROLINA pre-emergent to keep them from coming back. Remember that those products do not stop weeds with bulbs (nut sedge) or “running” weeds (clover, Bermuda, smilax). You will have to keep pulling those. ✻ This is a good time to add mulch. Some of you had your mulch wash away with the rains, or you might have skipped re-applying it this spring. Mulch helps to keep soil and moisture levels stable. It helps roots establish and keeps perennials from heaving out of the ground. Once you get things tucked in, there are other things that can be done as well: ✻ If you have bare areas, keep planting. and shrubs can be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen. Let’s have a little refresher course on planting trees and shrubs: Dig your hole twice as wide as your root ball, but no deeper. Mix the soil that comes out of the hole 50/50 with a good planting mix or soil conditioner. If your plants want acidic soil, add soil acidifier. Loosen up the roots on your plant. Place your plant into its hole and backfill with the soil mixture. Press the soil firmly around the root ball. Water your plant well and use a root stimulator to help feeder roots establish. ✻ There are some perennials that can still be planted. You want to get them in soon, however. Roots need to get established before the ground gets too cold. ✻ Pansies and violas can still be planted. They add such a ray of sunshine when we get into those grey, dreary days of winter! ✻ Fluff those containers and get them ready for the holidays. Replace annuals with pansies or evergreen foliage. Don’t be afraid to play around with colors and textures! ✻ Continue to remove falling leaves from grassy areas. Chop them up with your lawn mower and then use them as mulch around your plants. Decomposing leaves are wonderful for your soil! ✻ Speaking of soil, fall is a good time to add compost and manure so they can break down and enrich your soil during the winter

months. Now I am going to switch gears and talk about Christmas trees, because many of you are buying them earlier than you used to. Here are some things that you need to be aware of: ✻ There is a shortage. My order was cut 35% by the grower, and some sizes are not available. Many of the growers have gone out of business, and it isn’t a quick fix. Trees take 5-10 years to grow and must be sheared, cleared, and watched. You might end up with a tree that is not quite the size, shape, or variety that you would have preferred. Please remember that all Christmas trees are beautiful once decorated, and don’t let a bare spot or European styling (more space between branches) keep you from buying. ✻ Ask where the trees come from and when they were cut before you buy, and only buy from a reputable source. ✻ Keep your tree watered. Use as big a stand as you can, and don’t let it go dry. The tree will seal over if it isn’t in water continuously and will no longer be able to “drink.” I will talk about other holiday plants next month. We have gorgeous plants and gifts still coming in. Stop by and see us soon!

November New Year’s Resolution? You’ve got to be kidding me. I hardly remember the resolutions I made this past January. You know – knock off a couple of pounds around the middle, read that self-improvement book, schedule more frequent date nights, and on and on and on. I’ve heard people say that resolutions are made to be broken. With that logic, why take the trouble to make them at all? Resolutions have a place in all of our lives. They can serve as significant mileposts that help to enhance not only our own health and well-being, but also the health and well-being of those we love. Attained resolutions can shape our futures and eliminate future regrets. We’ve all witnessed families struggling not only with the loss of a loved one, but also struggling with carrying out the final wishes of the deceased in the absence of a will. Or how about the elderly couple now struggling to subsist solely on Social Security because they failed to plan adequately for their retirement. And while the loss of a loved one, retirement and other of life’s eventualities are unavoidable, well thought out plans can often serve to minimize their potential negative impact on our lives and those that matter the most to us. If you’ve been postponing action on creating plans to deal with life’s uncertainties,

the time to act is now. Do you have a will, a medical and financial power of attorney, or how about a financial plan designed to help you to enjoy retirement to its fullest and to take care of those you care about the most after you’ve gone? Do You Have Pinhole Leaks? It Might Be Your Water…

By david Brewster, Owner of Aqua Clear Water Systems, LLC

have heard pinhole leaks are a huge pain. Not from personal experience, but from the clients I have worked with. Stories of massive floods, ripping out drywall, hidden mold growing behind

the wall, and $10k-$20k re-plumbing jobs having to be done. And the sad part is most people think it’s just their old plumbing, and there is no alternative but to invest in totally gutting the plumbing. Luckily, we

have saved many clients from turning their home into a job site by fixing the water that travels through those old pipes. Chlorine is corrosive to copper. It reacts with the copper to create a chemical com-

pound: Copper chloride. This compound can slowly attack copper from the inside, which results in those tiny but destructive pinhole leaks. Also, hard water, an abundance of calcium/magnesium, can erode copper pipes if a hot water recirculation pump is installed. Kinetico water systems remove the chlorine, chloramines, and hardness that can attack copper pipes. We also add a special coating filter, after the Kinetico system, to recoat the copper plumbing from the years of damage. After installing hundreds of Kinetico Systems to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that it works. We’ve been saving our valued clients from $10k-$20k re-plumbing jobs and from turning their home into a job site. And not only did they save their plumbing, but they also get all the other benefits of installing a Kinetico whole house water filtration system. We are so confident that we have a turn-key pinhole leak prevention system that we will refund your investment if it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Don’t Forget to Winterize Your Garage

November, 2021, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 7B

T

he daylight hours are getting much shorter and the temperatures are getting cooler as winter approaches. And so the yearly ritual of preparing your home for colder weather is underway. As you think about your house, don’t forget about prepping your garage. While the weather isn’t bitter cold outside, don’t procrastinate getting your garage winter ready so your car doesn’t spend another winter outside in the cold. PremierGarage of Knoxville, serving East Tennessee for 15 years, has the following suggestions in helping to get your garage ready for winter. Declutter Garages are the go-to dumping ground for items that you’re reluctant to part with or just can’t find a storage spot for within your heated living space. Getting your garage organized and keeping it that way requires you to regularly declutter. Yes, it takes time, but it is worth the effort! It will make you feel better emotionally, especially every time you step into your garage. Don’t Keep Certain Items in the Garage There are certain household items many homeowners tend to keep in the garage that should be stored in their heated living space. They include: • Paint, cleaning products, and many household chemicals – Frigid temperatures affect their consistency and effectiveness • Electronics you plan to donate – Condensation can damage solder joints and cause circuit board crack or rust • Clothing or linens that aren’t in vacuum-sealed storage bags • Paper products – They attract rodents and other pests Make the Garage More Energy Efficient Your garage doors account for as much as a third of your home’s front exterior. Make sure they are properly insulated to keep as much cold air out. Additionally, make sure window frames and any other doors have weather stripping to eliminate drafts. Investing in a durable garage floor coating will also help. Cracks in your concrete floor may be leaking heat into the ground underneath. Additionally, with snow come roads covered in salt and de-icers. These chemicals make it safe to drive, but they attach to the undercarriage of our cars, only to be deposited on bare concrete. Once this brine is diluted by enough melting snow, or when temperatures drop extremely low, it refreezes inside concrete pores, expanding and slowly breaking it apart, resulting in broken concrete known as spalling. For the toughest garage floor available, PremierGarage’s high-quality finish protects your garage floor all year long from spalling and is chemical, stain, chip, and slip resistant. The company’s PremierOne coating protects and beautifies with a permanent, seamless finish that is twice as hard as most other epoxy finishes. And it’s easy to clean. With winter weather fast approaching, call PremierGarage of Knoxville. Home really does begin in the garage!

Bigleaf Magnolia: Magnolia macrophylla

omething about big flowers and foliage is so enticing to me. The first time I saw Magnolia macrophylla was at a botanical garden in Kentucky, and I was totally taken aback by the gargantuan leaves and flower buds. I knew at once this was one of my favorite plants I have come across. Commonly known as bigleaf magnolia, this is a deciduous, native tree that reaches 30-40 feet tall. It is commonly found in the eastern part of the state, along with western North Carolina, southeast Kentucky and parts of Alabama and Mississippi. This underutilized tree works well in spaces that get full or part sun. Sporting the largest non-compound leaves in North America, mature leaves are green above

and an attractive silvery-gray below and can be up to 36 inches long and 12 inches across. The large leaves can add a unique texture to your landscape! M. macrophylla also has the largest flowers of any tree in North America. The cream-colored blooms are usually 8-10 inches across, beautifully fragrant and appear in late May. After flowering, the seed pods swell with seeds covered in a protective red seed coat. These three unique characteristics of the flowers and foliage make this species easy to identify in its native habitat as an understory tree. Two cultivars of this plant are ‘Palmberg,’ which has even larger flowers than the species, and ‘Purple Spotted,’ a cultivar that has purple marking near the center of the

flower. Though these cultivars are hard to find on the market, they will make a beautiful and interesting addition to any landscape. The UT Gardens includes plant collections located in Knoxville, Crossville and Jackson. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the UT Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, see the Gardens website: utia.tennessee.edu/ state-botanical-garden.

This Season, Are You a Buyer or a Seller? By Aaron Hunt, Co-Owner of Premiere Consignment

K

now any shoppers who want to pay full retail price, especially for furniture? Me neither! That’s why we launched Premiere Consignment in nearby Tellico Village. We offer both buyers and sellers the perfect venue for conveniently buying and selling quality, name brand, gently used furniture, décor, rugs, and art at prices far below their original retail selling prices! Homeowners, here’s a great suggestion when planning for the upcoming holidays. Think back to how conveniently and comfortably your guests were able to enjoy your home last holiday season. Did a particular

room appear cluttered, or was the traffic pattern or flow obstructed? Was there sufficient seating for everyone? Was your dining room table too large or too small? Would a buffet or sideboard have been helpful when serving meals? Reflecting on last year’s holiday events provides you with the perfect opportunity to determine how to improve your home for the upcoming holiday season, allowing you to comfortably and efficiently entertain friends and family this Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s. If you find that letting some items go would be the best option, Premiere Consignment is the safest and most convenient way to sell no longer used, quality items. Safe because sellers won’t have to invite strangers into their home or wait for poten-

tial buyers - who may never show up - or who want to negotiate an already agreed upon price. Convenient because sellers don’t need to be concerned about bad checks or handling large amounts of cash. If you find that you could use those extra guest chairs, a rug for cold feet, or a smaller table, Premiere Consignment has a large selection of home décor with every style imaginable represented. Buyers can browse our extensive showroom during business hours, as well as having access to our full-service eBay store. Buyer or seller, Premiere Consignment can help. From décor to furniture, we can help you enhance every room in

your home or help you find a new home for those quality items that you find you may no longer need. Let us take the inconvenience out of buying and selling quality, name brand furniture, décor, rugs, and art while saving up to 90% off full retail prices. You can also visit our website to view our current inventory and shop from your couch! Premiere Consignment is simply your smartest and easiest way to buy and sell. uilding any home is exciting yet can be stressful. This would be our second custom home to build and being from a different state makes it even more daunting.

In searching for a home builder we needed to feel confident and excited to pursue this project. Being not from the area, I searched the internet and “phone interviewed” 4-5 builders before settling on Kit Keener. Seeing the other testimonials on his website and meeting Kit felt confident he and his team were best suited for us. www.keenerhomes.net | 865-458-1759

We moved from Columbus Ohio, just after they broke ground to a condo rental in Maryville to be available to pick products and see the changes. Kit provided many choices and options with vendors to stay in budget, and worked well when on a few times, I ventured outside his circle to choose an alternate product or vendor. We soon learned from other subcontractors and a few locals that Kit partners with some of the top subcontractors in the area. One day 3 separate individual contractors, (electrical, plumbing, HVAC) were onsite, and all met and worked well with each other coordinating a plan to most efficiently work with each other without being in each other’s way. On several occasions I was told by many other subs that “Mike”, Kit’s choice for the trim carpenter, is the “best in the area”. After watching him work and seeing his final results, quickly realized Mike is a very talented craftsman. It’s a example of how Kit and his team partner with some of the most talented artisans in their field. Kit, Derek and Krisha are always a cell phone call away and solve any issues that arise. Our experience was very positive and Kit Keener would be our first choice if ever to do it again.

hances are that you haven’t heard of the artist Mutlu (pronounced mootlu). However, once you catch his show at Knoxville’s Open Chord on November 11, you will never forget him. That was certainly the case of none other than Daryl Hall and John Oates. Mutlu is a first-generation American whose parents moved from Turkey to the United States in the 1970s. He discovered the strength of his voice in high school while singing in a Broadway revue. He liked being on stage but didn’t anticipate pursuing it as a career. However, while earning a marketing degree from Drexel University, he spent innumerable hours practicing guitar, writing songs, and playing open mic nights. Now, roughly 15 years into a career as a professional musician, he believes that his Turkish heritage informs his perspective as an artist. He shares, “From a writing standpoint, having that multicultural background from a young age fuels your creativity in a different way. It makes you empathize with things differently than you would have.” Coming up in the scene, he played around town and in area clubs before landing his first tour opening for Joe Jackson. Since then, he’s toured across the U.S. and Europe with his musical brother, Amos Lee, who discovered Mutlu’s music just as both of their careers were taking off. In addition, he’s found an advocate with Daryl Hall and John Oates, who invited Mutlu to support a national theater tour. Mutlu reflected, “Representing the sound and legacy of Philly music is at the core of everything I do. My music is an extension of the city that I grew up in, and it’s shaped who I am as an artist and a songwriter. Us-

ing my music as a vehicle to provide social commentaries is very important to me. This is true of songs like ‘Lifeline,’ ‘Not Escapable,’ and ‘95 to 5.’ ‘Lifeline’ was inspired by, and is a tribute to, the late Civil Rights hero and Georgia Congressman John Lewis. The album’s title, Good Trouble, is also a tribute to John Lewis.” Mutlu also has a less serious side, as he’s the first to offer that an element of humor is integral to his overall body of work. He offered, “My song ‘Caramel’ is a good example of that. It’s a song that’s both sexy and absurd. I want to communicate a whole range of emotions, and being able to make people laugh is a key part of making a strong connection to the audience. On a broader level, being able to deliver the songs in the simplest, most direct manner is paramount to what I do. I love working with a great band, but I know a song is truly special when I can impact the audience with just my voice and guitar.” Whether crooning a love song like “Caramel” (which echoes the Gamble & Huff output of the ’70s), spreading optimism in “Lifeline,” or sharing a look into his own life as in “Scarred,” Mutlu can bring his diverse catalog together through the power of his voice. He’s been recog-

nized by the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, and The Philadelphia Inquirer for his sweet, silky tone. Bruce Warren of WXPN once described Mutlu’s music as “a mix of soul, reggae, world music, and folk, all tied together in the singer-songwriter tradition.” “The vocal connection - that’s the cornerstone of everything I do,” he said. “Everything else is in service of that, performance-wise and production-wise. In R&B and soul music, singers try to really emotionally connect, vocally. It’s about that special thing that can happen when you really dig down deep and give a performance that moves people.” Mutlu launched his career on Manhattan Records with the 2008 album Livin’ It, produced by mentor and friend T Bone Walker. Since then, he’s developed his international audience through touring, multiple appearances on Live from Daryl’s House, and a steady stream of independent singles and EPs, most recently 2019’s Good Trouble. He cites songs like “Livin’ It,” “Hello Morning,” and “One Life with You” as staples in his set, yet he believes that the show experience is far

more than just playing the same material every night. “For people who know the songs, it’s about giving something more than they would get on the record,” he said. “I tour a lot solo, and for me it’s about going beyond just playing the songs. Building a community around my music is as important to me as anything. Whether it’s through the online community, live concerts, or my involvement in programs like Musicians On Call, using my music to build personal relationships and make an impact on people’s lives is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a musician.” Join the Mutlu community at the Open Chord on November 11.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

he Public Library at Tellico Village is a self-supporting public library. The County supports 1.5 personnel – the Library manager and a half time time assistant. With the help of the Friends of the Tellico Village Library, through memberships, fundraising events and grants, Friends built the building and keep the doors open. However, without our many volunteers the Library could not keep its day to day operations available to patrons. VOLUNTEERS at the Tellico Village Public Library are how the Library keeps going. With more than 150 volunteers, they serve the Library in so many ways: circulation desk; helping with regular, simple maintenance at the Library; mini-book sales; help with shrub and plant care on the grounds; marketing; membership; setup and tear down for special events; fundraising events and choosing and/or delivering materials to local assisted living and nursing homes. Not to be forgotten is the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Library. These are the folks who handle the fundraisers, publicity, finance, memberships, etc., all working with the volunteers mentioned above. There is a need for two specific volunteers at this time. We need a retired IT specialist to support the IT systems and support services in the Library. We have 20 PC’s/ Laptops, 4 printers and 1 server. If you are interested in volunteering some time to this very worthwhile cause, please contact FOTVLTreasurer@gmail.com. Another on-going need of the Friends is for help with set-up and take-down of tables and chairs for our events. Please add your name to the list of volunteers to help us out with this very important job. You will be called when needed. Please contact fotvlassistanttreasurer@gmail. com if you can help. All other volunteers can go to our website at tvlibrary.org, press the search button and type in the word “volunteer”. The search will take you to a volunteer application page. Please fill it out and submit it online. Someone will get back to you regarding your application. The volunteers at the circulation desk are a delightful group numbering 35 who work in shifts throughout the month. There are two desk volunteers per shift and 2 shifts a day. So no one is asked to work more than a couple of times a month. Volunteers have said they really enjoy their interaction with the patrons of the Library – sometimes recommending a book, sometimes instructing them on Tennessee Reads, sometimes just chatting with them about a good book the patron has read and wants to talk about and/or recommend it. If you want to put a book on hold, if you need a name tag, if you want to sign up for a class, if you want directions inside the Library as to where to find your book, all you need to do is ask one of these smiling individuals. Two of the desk volunteers are being highlighted this month: Barbara Eidenmuller is an 8 ½ year resident of the Village having moved from Western Pennsylvania with her husband. She has spent the last 8 years as a circulation desk volunteer; other volunteer “jobs” in the Village include working at the Friendship Kitchen through the Community Church, member and chair of her neighborhood Care Committee, various duties supporting our tennis groups and working with Together We Rise, a support program for 3rd world countries. Not to just work at the desk, Barbara has taken on other volunteer duties at the Library – she has helped set-up and take-down for the annual book sale as well as our now very popular mini book sales. She works with a committee of three to design the beautiful bulletin board in the foyer – soon to be redone for the Fall/Winter. She has also learned how to remove scratches from our cds so they can be loaned out again! Barbara loves fiction and non-fiction, as well as historical novels, again fiction and non-fiction and thrillers. When she reads a book, she wants to make sure it is a “worthwhile read” before pass-

She has just finished a book by a new author, Sara Nisha-Adams, THE READING LIST – a story about a chance encounter with a list of library books that helps forge an unlikely friendship between 2 very different people in a London suburb. Barbara says this is definitely worthwhile. Ruth Newman loves to read – she can read 3 books a week but still has time to volunteer at the Library doing her favorite thing – talking about books. Ruth is from Florida, she and her husband moved to the Village five years ago and has served four of those years as a circulation desk volunteer. She loves non-fiction books but has certain authors she likes to follow in other genres. Fredrik Beckham (A Man Called OVA and Britt Marie Was Here) are two books she especially enjoyed and has recommended both to many patrons. She is an avid Louise Penny fan and can’t wait to read the new Hilary Clinton and Louise Penny book: State of Terror. Two other new books that have caught her attention are: The Dressmakers of Auschwitz – a true story of the women who sewed to survive by Lucy Addington and by Ron and Clint Howard: The Boys: A Memoir of Hollywood and Family. The best part about volunteering at the circulation desk, according to both Barbara and Ruth, is being able to connect with people who are readers and really love to read and to talk about books. Being able to help someone find a new author, a different genre, best sellers, or long-time favorites is the reason they continue volunteering. The Friends of the Tellico Village Public Library have

progress the Association has made in monitoring water quality in the lake, keeping the environment around the lake as clean as possible and ongoing maintenance work on the East Lakeshore Trail, which was built under WATeR’s sponsorship. Organization leaders are also excited to share with attendees a new program, which WATeR will be encouraging participation in among all area residents. They expect this exciting program will have a direct, positive impact on the water quality of Tellico Lake, both now and in the future. The meeting area will be set up so as to maintain appropriate social distancing. For the safety of everyone, masks will be required. Everyone living within the Tellico watershed and guests are invited to attend. Admission is free.

It’s Not Too Late to Take Advantage of These 2021 Tax Saving Ideas

Still Waiting on Your 2020 Refund? s of September 8, 2021, the IRS had a backlog of 7.8 million individual income tax returns that require manual processing. Many needed further review because the amount of Economic Impact Payments (Stimulus) claimed as being received differed from the IRS records. This contributed to over 9 million returns identified with math errors prompting notices being sent to taxpayers. The good news is this is a great improvement over the 16.7 million unprocessed returns as of June 25. As of September 8 there were more than 2.8 million Forms 1040X (Amended Tax Returns) that were awaiting processing. Business returns were also backlogged with some 2.3 million unprocessed employment tax returns filed on Form 941. And good luck trying to call the IRS with a question or to check on the status of your refund. So far in 2021, only 9% of callers reached a live IRS customer service repre-

sentative. Part of the problem is the historic number of phone calls. The IRS reports receiving over 200 million calls so far in 2021 The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) introduced many new tax changes when it was enacted in March 2020. Many of those changes will affect the 2021 tax return filings. Economic Impact Payments ARPA enacted another round of economic impact payments that were sent to qualifying taxpayers in 2021. Just like the two 2020 rounds of stimulus payments, the payments were sent out in advance. The 2021 recovery rebate credits provided individuals with a $1,400 recovery rebate credit ($2,800 for married taxpayers filing a joint tax return) plus $1,400 for each dependent claimed on their 2021 income tax return. The credit is phased out for single taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) over $75,000 and is completely phased out with AGI over $80,000. For married taxpayers who file married-filing- jointly, the phase out

starts at $150,000 and the credit ends at $160,000. The payments started being sent to eligible taxpayers in April and will continue throughout year. While the payments are not considered taxable, you will have to declare them on your 2021 income tax return if you received the payment. For eligible taxpayers who do not receive the advance payment, they will receive it when they file their 2021 income tax return. So be sure to confirm that you received your payment. Child Tax Credit ARPA also expanded the Child Tax Credit and provided for advance payments. The credit is fully refundable for 2021 and 17 year-olds are eligible. The credit was increased to $3,000 per child ($3,600 for children under 6). The increase is phased out for taxpayers whose income is over $150,000 ($75,000 for single taxpayers). The credit phases out by $50 for each $1,000 of income over these thresholds. Advance payments for 50% of the credit were sent to eligible taxpayers from July through December. You will need to reconcile the advance payments you receive in 2021 with the actual amount of credit you are entitled when you file your 2021 tax return. Employee Retention Credit ARPA extended the employee retention credit through the end of 2021. The employee retention credit was originally enacted in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) and allows eligible employers to claim a credit for paying qualified wages to employees. Year-End Gifts Now is a great time to consider gifts of appreciated property. A taxpayer can make gifts to any number of donees before the end of the year as long as each gift is no more than $15,000. Non-taxable gifts will not be included in the donor’s unified estate and gift tax exemption. Gifts to any one donee in excess of $15,000 will reduce the unified estate and gift tax exemption and may be worthy of consideration if Congress reduces the exemption. Married taxpayers can make joint gifts up to $30,000 for each donee. Gifts should be made prior to December 31 and checks dated in 2021, but not deposited or cashed until 2022 are considered gifts made in 2022, not 2021. For taxpayers who have to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and who wish to make a charitable donation to a qualified charity should consider a Qualified Charitable Donation (QCD). You should direct your plan administrator to make the donation directly from your IRA and it will count as part of your RMD. Realize Stock Losses to Off-set Gains Taxpayers who own appreciated investments but have realized capital losses in 2021 should consider selling appreciated investments. Or if they have realized gains on stocks, should consider if they have losses that can be realized to off-set the capital gains. Amounts Paid for Home COVID-19 Tests are Medical Expenses The cost of personal protective equipment, such as mask, hand sanitizers, wipes and home COVUD-19 tests are considered medical expenses for taxpayer’s who itemize their medical expenses on Schedule A. Simplified Per Diems Set by IRS For 2022 the simplified per diems for lodging, meals and incidentals in high-cost locales, is $296 per day. The daily amount for all other areas is $202. For meals and incidentals only, the rates are $74 a day in high-cost locales and $64 elsewhere. The per diem for solely incidental expenses is $5. The use of these simplified amounts can reduce the amount of records and receipts required to be maintained. Understanding the complexity of the tax code and making sure you realize the full benefit of the tax laws can be very challenging. The tax professionals at WarrenJackson can assist in you maximizing your tax advantages.
