Design Decor’s Tips for a Designer-Quality Christmas Tree

Knoxville Decorators Deliver the Holidays to Your Home or Business

It’s the most wonderful time of the year

Full disclosure: I am one of those people who loves to go “all out” with decking the halls for the holidays. We’re talking trees, lights, garland - every room in my home gets to share in the spirit of the season. It’s part of the reason why I wanted to get into the decorating business! And using festive touches of decor to help families and businesses make their own holidays a little happier brings me joy as well.

We deliver that joy through Design Decor, a full-service decorating dream team based here in Knoxville that’s able to transform your space with designer-quality decor cus tomized to fit your personal style.

One tradition many of us share during Christmastime is displaying a decorated tree. And since I am not personally a designer (I hire the team at Design Decor!), I asked Linda Heaton Ridings, Design Decor’s designer and co-owner, to share her top tree-trimming tips: Size it up

Since it’s likely the biggest decoration you’ll have in your home for the holidays, the tree is the star of the show. But, it still needs to fit the stage… er, space... where it will spend the season. If you have tall ceilings, a 4-foot tree isn’t going to have the same impression as one that stretches the height of the room.

In a pinch, tables can help small trees feel larger. Or, if it’s a particularly large open space, you might even consider grouping multiple trees of varying widths and heights to combine for a larger unified focal point.

Top it off

To decorate the tree, start at the top and work your way down. That means the topper, whatever you’re planning to have at the tippy top of the tree, goes on first, that way there’s no chance of knocking off any ornaments while climbing your way to the pinnacle.

Linda suggests having in mind a color scheme or a theme before placing anything on a branch. She likes to use toppers that

stand out and draw the eyes up to the top. Big bows or sparkling twigs can help have that effect and help tie the whole tree together.

Keep things in perspective

The lights are on, the topper’s on, now it’s time to fill the branches with ornaments. Keeping the theme you picked in mind, Linda says you can create a more visually inter esting tree by mixing up shapes and textures. For example, pair flowers with glass ball ornaments. We have lots of different options here in our showroom.

But, the thing to keep in mind here is that the placement of each piece is key. Larger ornaments are best on the bottom branches where the tree is widest, with smaller orna ments toward the top. This strategy helps create a flow from top to bottom and is easier on the eyes.

Tucking a wide ribbon around the tree helps fill any bare spaces without ornaments and is another way to add texture and dimension.

Or just call us!

Let’s be honest, bringing the tree and decorations out of storage is a chore in itself,

Welcome

A Time to be Thankful!

What does Thanksgiving mean to you? We get into a flurry of activity to prepare for the guests to arrive or to make our travel preparations to visit family. We clean and decorate our homes, shop for food – and more food, and begin prepping the turkey and other delicious goodies days in advance. It’s easy to make it all about the food or other holiday activities.

What do you look forward to the most? Is it the food with the following food coma nap? Is it getting up early to watch the Thanksgiving Day parades? Is it getting up REALLY early on Friday to catch some great Black Friday deals?

This Thanksgiving, I pray you have the opportunity to bask in Thankfulness. To really take some time to focus on what you are thankful for. Hymn writers over the years have encouraged us to “Count Your Many Blessings (name them one by one)”; Bing Crosby taught Rosemary Clooney (and us) to “Count Your Blessings Instead of Sheep”, and the list goes on.

Being thankful, or counting your blessings, is not just a tra dition or a nice thing to do, but it’s good for you! Studies have shown that those who focus on what they are grateful for (rather than the negative) tend to be happier and often healthier. It’s certainly a lot more enjoyable.

There is so much I am thankful for: my wonderful husband of

39 years and business partner, Tim, and our fantastic son, daugh ter-in-law and granddaughter. I am grateful that my mother is still with us and healthy (and enjoying East Tennessee SO much) and for all she has taught me. I am grateful to live in such a beautiful area. I am grateful for my health and for living in this country where I have the opportunity to own a business. I am so grateful for our graphics designer and friend, Meredith, who always cheerfully helps us meet our crazy deadlines. I am grateful for all of our advertising partners that have put their trust in us throughout the years. And I am grateful for all of our readers that support our advertisers’ businesses.

I am grateful for all those who have served and are now serv ing our country and honor them this Veterans Day.

Our blessings are many and I shall continue to count them. I pray this Thanksgiving you take the time to reflect on yours. From all of us at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views to all of you, we wish a very happy Thanksgiving.

Confidently Living Single, Now or in the Future

Ok, ladies, this article is mostly for you. Whether you’re living single this very minute or not, odds are that you will at some point in your life. Statistically, women outlive men by about 7 years, so we need to embrace our longevity, celebrate it, and plan for it.

When I talk with my single women cli ents, one theme resonates repeatedly, and that is one of independence and self-suffi ciency. “I don’t want to be a burden to my kids” or “I want to maintain my financial independence” are common expressions.

What’s it like living single? To be ex pected, cash flow is typically tighter. The

household has one Social Security check instead of two, tax rates are higher for a single person, and ex penses don’t turn out to be half of what a two-person household requires. Fixed expenses such as property taxes, homeowners’ insurance and utilities stay the same regardless of the number of occupants.

You need to know your income strategy. If you’re married now, look at the cash flow you’ll have with one social security check and understand whether your spouse’s pension income will continue or cease at his passing. Will you receive life insurance from your spouse? Is your house paid for, so you won’t have a housing payment?

If you’re unsure of what the future looks like, don’t just hope for the best – reach out to a financial planner, whether me or your current advisor – and have them help you think through the “single” scenario and how your lifestyle could continue undiminished. This is too important to leave to chance. The single retired women I work with know this to be true.

You also need to plan for long-term care costs. I know I’m a broken record on this topic, but I have to be. There’s a reason that it costs women more for LTC protection than men – because insurance companies know women are more apt to need it and use it. Remember my favorite type: asset-based LTC insurance. Its cost is guaranteed at issue and has a death benefit for your heirs if you never need

it. This is a gift you give yourself AND your family. Let’s be honest, your kids love you, but they don’t want to be your caregiver. Am I right?

We can do this, ladies. We’re all in this together.

Remember the old-fashioned pharma cies of the 60’s? Like believeRX, they also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when need ed. Some even had ice cream and soda fountains. Also, like believeRX, they were very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies of today. Those phar macists knew their customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, many feel treated like only a number. It is refresh ing and encouraging that believeRX still

WhenI was growing up, the coming of November was always a very special time. It meant my birthday month had arrived, but it also meant that Thanksgiving was soon to be rolling around again. My family was not religious, and so we celebrated Thanksgiving with a gusto perhaps intended to make up for our lack of observance at other times of the holiday calendar. Thanksgiving meant getting up while it was still dark and piling into the car with my grandparents, mother, and uncle. We would make the two-hour drive from our home in rural Carrol County to Pontotoc, MS, where my great grandmother, Ruby Matthis, lived. When we got there, Ruby would be waiting there to greet us with her 7 other children and all of their spouses and children.

Ruby couldn’t have stood over 5ft 1 inch tall, and so in my earliest memories I am looking up at her as she leaned down to hug me, and in later ones I am looking down at her smiling face with my arm around her shoulders. Even with a room crowded full of people, Ruby made me feel like she had been waiting just to see me. I would plop down on the floor in front of the tv and watch the parade while the aromas of thyme, rosemary, and sage wafted out of the kitchen. Finally, it would be time for the food. I had a special chair with a yellow plastic step that let me climb up to the table. I remember the year I had gotten too old to use my chair, and a younger cousin was allowed to sit in it, but we won’t speak of that day. Even with the huge crowd of family, there was always more than enough to eat.

As far as I knew, Ruby did not attend church either. However, on her dresser was a bible that I would leaf through. There were paintings on her walls of a kind looking man who she called Jesus. We didn’t have paintings like that at our house, so it interested me very much that this bible and these pictures seemed to mean so much to Ruby. Later on, I would start going to church on my own. Much later on, I would go to seminary and learn more about this man Jesus who always welcomed people, no matter what, as if they were the only people on Earth. He would talk and tell stories that made people come away feeling better and stronger. He would make wine out of water and multiply bread and fish so there was more than enough for everyone. After knowing Ruby, none of that surprised me much.

When Thanksgiving rolls around, I give thanks to Jesus that he showed up first for me as a little lady named Ruby, and I give thanks that he keeps showing up in the tables of welcome we keep setting.

Celebrating the Birth of Christ this Advent Season

First Baptist Church of Tellico Village

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” Luke 2:13-14

FirstBaptist Church of Tellico Village invites the area community to celebrate the Advent and Christmas season with us starting with the Hanging of the Green on November 27th; the first Sunday of Advent. Worship services Sunday are at 9:00 or 10:30 a.m. For those that have not experienced a Hanging of the Green Service, it is a very special worship service in which our congregation adorns the church with Christmas and Advent decorations. During this annual worship celebration, our sanctuary is transformed with the symbols of the season as we worship together through scripture and carols. Live streaming of the service will be available at 10:30 am by going to our website at www.fbctv.org.

On Sunday and Monday, December 4th, and 5th, at 7:00 p.m., our Music and Worship Ministry will present, “The Joy of Christmas”. This outstanding musical celebration is conducted by our Minister of Music, David Whipple, Jr., with narration by Sauni Rinehart, and will feature our Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra, along with members of Tellico Singers and the Knoxville Symphony. Admission is free, but tickets are required. Free tickets are available through the church office beginning November 1st. For more information call the church office at (865) 408-0110, watch our live streaming service each Sunday at 10:30 a.m., or go to FBCTV.org.

The Eight Percent Solution

The good folks on the television keep telling us that inflation here in The United States of America is hovering around eight percent. We have been conditioned to believe that if they say it on television, then it surely must be true.

However, as a small busi ness owner, it is very difficult to understand just where this ‘eight percent’ number comes from, and here are just a few examples of why I personally believe that the inflation number is significantly higher than eight percent.

Since January 20, 2021, here are just a few examples of how our operating costs have risen.

» air filters up 88%

» hair colors up 36%

» bleach up 38%

» foils for bleach up 100%

» developer up 28%

» cleaning supplies up 32%

» ink for printers up 35%

» shipping fees up 25%

» fuel costs for commuting employees up 100%

As you can clearly see, there is nothing at our place of business that has gone up anywhere near eight percent, and it is likely that if you do a household audit during the same time period, you will find similar results as well.

In keeping with our traditions, our salon has not had a site wide price increase since the first of the year as we normally do. This decision was made with the hopes that the current economic trends would improve and that the rapid rise in costs over the past twenty months would begin to trend downward. This has simply not been the case.

In my twenty-seven years of being a small business owner, never before have we seen the operating chal lenges like the ones we now face nearing the end of 2022. And that is saying something immediately following The Covid years of 2020-2021.

To those of you who faithfully support small business in the area, know that you are appreciated, and without you, there would be no us...

Having first begun her search for a new family dentist online, Vicki Ailey found Heritage Family Dentistry.

“They had all five-star reviews,” she said. “Heritage Family Dentistry is a wonderful practice. I have major ‘dental anxiety,’ and they always put me at ease. They treat you like family. Dr. Bradshaw and his team are very gentle and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire procedure.”

Vicki’s first procedure was a dental implant. Dental implants are fast becoming the preferred treatment option for patients with missing teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between dental implants and their natural teeth. And, more importantly, dental implants continue to promote healthy bone density in the jaw. In the absence of natural teeth or dental implants, bone density can deteriorate, often creating a sunken or premature aging appearance.

“Dr. Bradshaw is also very informative,” said Vicki. “He takes the necessary time to explain everything in detail and always makes certain that you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and procedure.

“Heritage Family Dentistry is the best dental office I have been to. I have moved often and have seen at least 10 dentists. I would absolutely recommend them to others. They are the best dentistry team I’ve ever experienced.”

Patients at Heritage Family Dentistry can further relax with warm neck wraps and their choice of soothing music or nature television.

To learn more about Heritage Family Dentistry, request a tour and a free, no-obligation consultation by calling 865816-9211, or visit them online at www.hfdsmiles.com. Also, be sure to ask them about Invisalign, the revolutionary clear alternative to metal braces.

Now with Expanded Hours in Tellico Village

Here at Courtley Chiropractic, our heart is to help people not only with their current health challenges but with their future health as well. It may surprise you to learn that your body is designed to heal itself - from a cut on your skin to a broken bone. If your body is not healing itself, it’s our job to find out why. Many times, when faced with this situation, people start masking their symptoms through medications and a variety of other methods that can end up further increasing inflammation and leading to more disease and discomfort down the road.

Our mission here at Courtley Chiropractic is twofold. We want to help relieve pain and ease symptoms, but we are also passionate about teaching you about your body and how to gain and maintain overall health. Our goal is to empower you for the future and help you be healthy and active.

We are also excited about our new, expanded hours in our Tellico Village location next to Food Lion! Pre viously, we were only open Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:00 am to noon in Tellico Village. Now, we are open Mondays from 9 am to noon and then from 3 pm to 5 pm, Tuesdays from 9:00 am to noon, Wednesdays from 3 pm to 5 pm, and Thursdays from 9:00 am to noon. These new hours are in addition to our operating hours in our Farragut office.

Dr. Scott Courtley grew up north of Detroit in Shelby Township, Michigan. He pursued his undergraduate stud ies in Michigan and received his doctorate from Sherman Chiropractic College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After completing his doctorate, he came to Tennessee and found ed Courtley Chiropractic here in Tellico Village. After ten years, Dr. Courtley’s practice expanded to serve the broader Knoxville community for over 25 years. Earlier this year he returned to Tellico Village to reopen his second office.

Dr. Courtley has helped thousands of people regain their health and improve their quality of life, and he believes that God has anointed him to help thousands more. He constantly studies the newest chiropractic techniques, both integrator and traditional manipulation, and continuously integrates them into his practice to achieve maximum results for his patients. Not only that, but he is also deeply involved in the chiropractic revolution seminars. When he is not working, you will find him outdoors, as he especially enjoys golfing, hunting, and spending time on the lake with his family.

For your first visit, we will carefully evaluate your condition(s) through x-rays and personal evaluation tech niques. A doctor will then thoroughly explain their find ings to you and develop a customized plan for your needs. We don t just use a one-size-fits-all approach when treat ing our patients. We create a personalized plan, using a variety of techniques for each and every one. Constantly keeping up on the latest advances in Chiropractic care, we are able to utilize the method that will best help you.

The team is genuinely friendly and super helpful. Dr. Courtley is very thorough (which I appreciate) and is fantastic at what he does. He has addressed every issue that I was having and made a plan for me to follow. The massage therapist is very expe rienced and knowledgeable as well. She does an amazing job. The office is very clean and spacious. Even the bathroom is nice! If I could rate it higher than a 5, I would!

The Summer Grasshopperand Winter Ants

Thegrasshopper had enjoyed a won derful year. On hatching, he found spring exceeded all his expecta tions, what with its larder of delights to chew on paired with wonderful views. Ev ery hop there was a new treat to nibble on, and a brand new scene to take in.

Summer was even better. With warm days and warm nights, there was plenty of good company to keep him occupied, and as always, plenty to gnaw on.

One evening though, he noticed a trail of ants hard at work hauling pieces of food and material back to their colony. While he continued munching on the tender leaf beside him, they continued to work.

“Whatever are you doing all that for?” he asked. “Why bother taking all that food home when you could eat out and enjoy the sights?”

“Winter is coming,” they all replied. “We have to prepare if we’re going to have enough food until spring.”

The grasshopper looked around at the flowers and vegetation too numerous even for his appetite, and shook his head at the ants’ foolishness.

But then the days grew shorter, and the nights grew colder. The flowers he had enjoyed withered away. The leaves dried out and began to fall. He shivered when he hopped now, searching for something to stave off his hunger.

Finally, winter arrived. The ants cel ebrated their hard work throughout the year, having achieved their quota through patience and determination.

The short-sighted grasshopper heard them, and now fac ing a freezing night with an empty belly, finally understood who had made the best use of spring and summer.

At Fairweather Financial, we embrace the wisdom of preparing for the future, during the easy and hard times. The springs and summers of our lives are golden opportunities to lay up stores for the hard

winters. But for some, sadly, it sometimes takes a winter to realize how important those springs and summers are.

Whether you are the ant or the grass hopper is your decision. Even if you fear you’ve lived in the grasshopper’s role til this point, know it’s not too late to adopt a new approach and start actively plan ning for what life has in store. Like the diligent ants in our story, our preparations may seem small and insignificant, but with patience and perseverance, a little seed can yield great increase. And remember, these ants weren’t working alone, but as a team, ensuring their best chances of success.

That’s why we invite you to put our ser vices at your disposal as you plan to secure your financial future. Call me today and set up your private, at no cost or obligation con sultation. Winter is coming. Are your stores ready to see you through till spring?

Convenience

In 2017, when the Henrys moved to Tennessee from North Carolina, they were sure to include a few convenient roll-out drawers in the kitchen cabinets of their house when it was being built. They quickly be came aware that the limited number of roll-out shelves actually made it more difficult to access the items in the deep lower section of their cabinets. Not big fans of resorting to dropping to their knees on the floor in order to reach items way in the back, they decided that more roll-out shelving would be the best solution.

They had seen ads for Shelf Help, noticing that it was a local company, and gave them a call for a free estimate. After a very positive meeting with the owner of Shelf Help, where they were able to see product samples, dis cuss solutions for more challenging areas - like cabinets under sinks - and an installation time line, the Henrys were ready to place an order. And what an order it was!

“After Shelf Help gave us an estimate, we were so impressed with them and their product that we immedi ately ordered more than 40 roll-out shelves,” said Dick Henry. “We decided to install them everywhere there were cabinet shelves in the entire house. We ordered them for the kitchen, the laundry, the butler’s pantry, our rec room, and the master bath, which has his and her sink areas. We also ordered shelves for under the kitchen, laundry, and bathroom sinks where we never thought we could have them. Shelf Help can come up with a solution for anywhere you want roll-outs.”

The Henrys were able to have their practical and use ful roll-out shelving installed in just a couple of weeks

- as promised! The roll-out drawers fit right into any home’s existing cabinets or pantry, providing easier ac cess, better organization, and maximum use available storage space. Shelf Help was able to complete the in stallation in less than a day so that disruption was limit ed. Excited to have their cabinet access and function re stored, the Henrys could not be happier with their Shelf Help roll-out shelving. Jane Henry reflects, “Never a day goes by that we don’t mention how glad we are to have the many roll-outs. The quality of the shelves is outstanding, it can’t be beat!”

If you are experiencing challenges reaching items in your cabinets, Shelf Help has the understanding and know-how to evaluate, design, measure, and pro fessionally install solutions tailored to your needs and budget. Locally owned and operated, let Shelf Help make the most of your home’s kitchen, bath, or pantry storage space.

In the GardenNovember

Fallhas been beautiful but was dry there for a while. I am hoping that by the time this is published, we will have started getting some good rainfall. I am tired of dragging the hose around my yard!

Many of you are under the miscon ception that gardening tasks are over, but November is an important month. This is when you “put your garden to bed.” To prepare your yard for next year and to make the transition into the cooler months easier for your plants, take steps now.

Step 1: Go out and walk all the way around your yard. It has been hot and dry for a long time, and there are some areas you probably haven’t looked at for weeks. Check for damage to branches and trunks of trees. Look down for signs of chipmunks, moles, and voles. Look for disease or insect problems that need to be addressed. Are there plants that should be pruned/divided/removed? Create a to-do list for nice days when you need to get outside.

Step 2: Final clean-up. Pick up fall en plant debris but don’t compost any that shows signs of disease and insects. Cut back dead or dying foliage on your perennials, but be careful not to cut into the crown (the low growth at the base). Remove any remaining annuals. Trim off dead or damaged branches on shrubs. This is not the time for major prun ing, however - save that until late win ter. Give us a call if you have questions. Get rid of weeds that are already start ing to pop up. Pull or spray them and then apply a pre-emergent such as Preen. Pre-emergents should be used every 3-6 months throughout the year, depending on the type that you use. A little effort in the fall will save you a lot of effort in the spring.

Step 3: Amend your soil. Leaf mulch, topsoil, and decomposed manure added now will break down during the win ter, giving nutrients to your plants in the spring. Having trouble with particular ar eas in your yard? Do a soil test to determine

what you need to add. Now that you have everything all nice and cleaned up, it is a good time to plant! Trees and shrubs plant ed now will get roots established and be ready to grow by spring. Some perennials also do well if planted in the fall. Pansies and violas give a wonderful show of color during the colder months. Bulbs should be planted by the end of November or placed into the refrigerator to chill. Frost resistant container gardens that are thick enough to provide root ball protection can be turned into spectacular fall and/or winter dis plays. Grasses, evergreen perennials, and small evergreen shrubs make a great start ing point for containers. Let us help if you are low on ideas.

Step 4: Mulch your beds or fluff spring mulch. Mulch - hardwood, pine needles, or leaf - is important to keep soil temperature and moisture levels sta ble through our roller coaster winters. 3 ” to 4 ” is all that you need, and remember not to pile the mulch around your trees! It should look more like a donut than a volcano.

Let’s talk about leaves for a minute. We have been conditioned to believe that we must get all the leaves off our yard. This is false. Leaves are a terrific source of nutrients for your plants, so it is illogical to remove them only to turn around and fertilize. Unless you have a heavily wooded yard, just run over them with the mower and leave them there. If you do have a lot of trees, simply blow the excess into the tree line. Over time they will form a wonderful leaf mold that keeps down weeds and can be used in beds to add nutrients. I do not advise this is when you have had a problem with disease. Sick leaves will need to be removed.

Have you noticed a change in your bird feeder visitors? Don’t stop feeding, because food will become scarcer in the coming months. Switch to a higher fat seed, such as black oil sunflower seeds. All ceramic or concrete birdbaths should be drained and stored for the winter, but think about buying a small plastic or metal replacement. Birds

Tailored Living Announces New Name: THE TAILORED CLOSET

Autumn has arrived, and this year’s holiday season is fast approach ing. For many of us, this means treasured times with family and friends, good food and even better conversation is just around the corner. Unfortunately, some of us may feel a little daunted by that last part conversation. As we age and experience hearing loss, we often also experience loss of enjoyment in those intimate gatherings that used to mean so much to us, simply because it’s difficult to hear and therefore participate in the conversation. Instead of feeling included, we begin to feel excluded, at the very time we expect to enjoy our close relationships with family and friends the most.

Even if this is a difficulty you haven’t experienced yet, odds are you have a dear family member or close friend cur rently experiencing these troubles. It’s demoralizing and saps enjoyment from these gatherings, no matter how much love and care is sent our way. Sadly, this can lead to individuals becoming more and more withdrawn, when the trouble of asking others to repeat themselves or speak more loudly finally outweighs the benefits of finally understanding what the conversation was about thirty sec onds earlier.

Some people have difficulty even ac knowledging they suffer from hearing loss, feeling it’s an early admission of advancing age. But denial comes with its own additional problems besides missing out in social gatherings, as un treated hearing loss can also hasten loss of other senses, such as balance and cognitive function. On the other hand, as corrective lenses can compensate for

loss of 20/20 vision, hearing loss can be similarly dealt with.

That’s why we’re here.

Tellico Hearing Solutions was start ed so you could discover if a hearing device might help you, your spouse, or your family member recover lost hear ing, allowing them to engage in the con versation as they used to, be it day to day, or on those special occasions we treasure forever. Robert, our Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, knows what it like to suffer from hearing loss, being a hearing instrument wearer him self. That’s why it’s so important to us to offer the best solution for you.

We use the latest cutting-edge technol ogy to conduct testing either in our office, or if more convenient, in the privacy of your home. If appropriate for your situa tion, we will then equip you with the best hearing aid for your budget and you. In addition, we can provide assistive listen ing devices for use with your tv, phone, or audio equipment, making your day-to-day activities easier.

These aren’t the hearing aids your grand ma used to use. Thanks to the new technolo gy available, we can help you optimize your ability to address hearing loss, and work toward the possibility of recovery. So much of our social interaction turns on our ability to hear and respond to others, and many of us don’t realize how devastating the loss of that interaction is until we begin to lose it. If you or your family member is experiencing hearing loss, don’t wait until you’re in the middle of the holiday season to address it. These days as we near the end of the year are precious, so why not face your hearing loss and take the necessary steps to over come it?

Our PLACE Creates Moments of Joy

In March of 2022, Our PLACE Adult Day Services opened its doors and became a much-needed support in serving individuals and families of Loudon and Mon roe Counties, and surrounding areas, living with Alzheimer’s and related demen tias. There are more than 120,000 Tennesseans living with Alzheimer’s; in Loudon and Monroe Counties alone, over 11,500 residents and caregivers are affected by dementia related diseases.

Our PLACE is a daytime structured program of services and activities for senior adults in need of cognitive intervention, social interaction, and supervision because of either physical or mental impairments. The mission of Our PLACE is to improve the quality of life of each participant, as well as to support caregivers through respite, sup port, education, and resources. Trained staff members and volunteers create an environ

ment of safety, nurturing, and person-centered care. Ongoing communication between staff members and family members is frequent, whether it is to share a pleasant day or discuss an issue.

Each day brings different opportunities for the participants, from enjoying musical groups, socializing with visiting dogs, exercising together, or putting together a recipe for a snack. It is in those social interactions that moments of joy are created, for the participants and the staff. The feeling of accomplishment that comes with making a pumpkin crescent roll, or a colorful art project that decorates the walls, can be seen in the smile of each person in the room. Our PLACE becomes a second home and family for each individual and their families.

The second Wednesday of each month at 4:30, a worship service takes place for the participants and families at Our Place.

The Caregiver Support group meets the second Friday of every month at the Public Library at Tellico Village, 9-11am. Everyone is welcome to attend the support group, where staff, guest speakers or other caregivers share tips on activities that can be done at home, safety, and security precautions. The library’s new Memory Care Center, created in conjunction with Our PLACE, has support books for caregivers, as well as games, puzzles, videos, picture books, and short stories that may be borrowed.

The Our PLACE Board of Directors continue to adapt to the needs of their partici pants, communicate the word and reach of their services. As a non-profit that relies on community giving, the Board will be launching an “Angels for Our PLACE” campaign. We hope you will consider making a difference in someone’s journey with dementia by contributing to Our PLACE. As we celebrate the blessings of Thanksgiving, we are so thankful for the support of our communities that have made Our PLACE a reality of joy and hope for many families in the area.

Our PLACE is open Monday through Friday, 8:30-4:30 (Monday 9:30-4:30), and is located at 103 Cheeyo Way, Loudon. More information can be found on the website, OurPlaceTN.org, or by calling 865-657-7222. Our PLACE is a 501 C 3 nonprofit or ganization.

A Collective Thank You to Volunteers, Donors, and Community

On Friday, September 30, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity volunteers, staff, and future home owners picked up large donations and unloaded cars in preparation for the Annual Garage Sale and Bou tique at the Community Church at Tellico Village, while Community Church Crafters and volunteers sorted and priced the merchandise. After a 2-year hiatus because of the pandemic and for the eighteenth year, the two groups partnered for the sale which featured donated items rang ing from furniture and home goods to lawn equipment, sporting equipment and clothing. At 8am on Saturday, October 1, the doors opened to an awaiting crowd of shoppers.

Kathy Blevins and Charlene Barton were the Commu nity Church Crafters co-chairs again this year. “So many

of the shoppers were so happy to have the sale return and thanked us for having the sale,” said Kathy Blevins. “We thank everyone who contributed to the sale’s success— to all those who helped set up, brought donations, each volunteer, the kitchen team, packing and clean-up and, of course, all the shoppers!”

“We were thrilled with the wonderful turnout from the community,” said Tony Gibbons, Loudon County Habitat for Humanity executive director. Gibbons said Sammie Shanks, Habitat volunteer coordinator, along with Craft ers Blevins and Barton organize the event. Gibbons con tinued by stating, “We have a long history with the Com munity Church at Tellico Village and the Tellico Village community, and we are grateful to the church for again hosting the event.”

Sammie Shanks added her appreciation by saying, “More families in our community will receive assistance because of the help of more than 150 volunteers who over the course of three days contributed to the sale’s success. We are thankful for each of these generous and kindheart ed people.”

Loudon County Habitat for Humanity is an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a worldwide Christian housing organization. All funds to build in Loudon Coun ty are raised locally to provide safe, affordable houses for low-income families who are willing to partner with Hab itat. These future homeowners help build their houses and then buy them from Habitat through an affordable mortgage. Funds from these mortgages go into a Fund for Humanity which allows Habitat to build other houses.

Ijams Nature Center Celebrates Re-Opening of River Trail

IjamsNature Center celebrates the re-opening of the north side of River Trail and a new section of the River Board walk on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m. The public is invited.

Attendees will gather at the intersection of North Cove Trail and River Trail on the bluffs behind the Ijams Visitor Center. Ijams Executive Director Amber Parker and City of Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon will make short remarks. Afterward, guests will explore the new trail, including the boardwalk, to its intersection with River Landing. River Trail is only accessible by foot and the route includes significant inclines. The total length of the walk is about one mile.

A large section of River Trail washed away during flood ing in February 2019, forcing its closure. The boardwalk re mained open but could be accessed only from the opposite side of the trail.

Ijams Nature Center staff called in partners to determine the best way to repair the trail and stop further erosion.

“We brought together government, commercial and non profit partners, as well as individual members of this commu nity, to develop a plan to restore one of Ijams’ most visited and beloved places,” Parker said. “This was a major project with many nuances, and it would not have been possible without their contributions.”

While planning was under way, Ijams staff and volunteers began removing invasive species from the area to open up the view to the river and allow native species to repopulate. Ap palachian Mountain Bike Club created a new section of trail farther from the river’s edge.

The next step was to install a support system on the side of the cliff, which had to be done from the water and required massive equipment. Ijams needed to find a barge company,

and with all of the damage caused by the flood and other work that needed to be done, the waiting list was long.

In June 2022, Knoxville Barge, Inc., drove pilings into the side of the cliff to provide support for a new section of the River Boardwalk to connect the trail and existing boardwalk.

Earthadelic then tackled the rest of the project, which in volved construction on a cliff face and seamlessly marrying new construction to the existing boardwalk. The original wooden structure was designed and built by Don Niday in the mid 1990s. Earthadelic completed its work in early October.

The City of Knoxville and an individual donor helped cov er the cost of the project.

Ijams Nature Center is a nonprofit, 318-acre educational nature center for all ages, abilities and walks of life. Ijams’ mission is to encourage stewardship of the natural world by providing an urban greenspace for people to learn about and enjoy the outdoors through engaging experiences. Located just three miles from downtown Knoxville, Ijams features 12+ miles of hiking and mixed-use trails, a public access river dock, swimming, boating, biking and more. The center offers hundreds of educational programs annually for all ages. The Ijams grounds and trails are open every day from 8 a.m. until dusk. Starting Nov. 1, 2022, the Visitor Center will switch to fall and winter hours and will be open daily 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday and Sunday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday. AMERICAN MINK

If you’ve ever seen an American mink, then you’ve probably met the cutest animal in Tennessee, in my opinion anyway! Al though these little animals can be aggressive, my encounters with them have been anything but aggressive. They seem more curious than anything, and I have had one come up to me and touch my shoes. Since they are very quiet and solitary animals, I haven’t had the chance to spend good quality time with minks and learn about them as every encounter has been short and sweet. I am always on the lookout, especially when I am out exploring around dams, swampy areas, or really just anytime I am near a river - they like to burrow in the riverbanks. Minks can be hard to spot as they are mostly nocturnal and small. They only get to about 2 feet long with half their length being their tails. They’re often mistaken as weasels but seeing a weasel in the state of Tennessee is uncommon. So, more than likely if you’re seeing a little ferret like animal near a body of water, it’s probably a mink!

Contact: Kalleybcook@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/kalleycookphotography https://kalleycook.smugmug.com

I mean, just look how cute that face is! My heart melts every time I see one, and how could it not? They have the cutest little round ears and eyes. Their coat comes in brown or black, and they have a little white on patch on their chin and sometimes on their throat - like this one. Their fur is also very thick and soft with oily guard hairs that make it waterproof. This one is very healthy looking and more than likely a male. I say this because of how “large” he was and in the mink world, males are typically larger - with “large” being only 3 pounds!

You may notice that it was raining in this photo when I saw him; perfect weather to spot a mink during the day!

Though wildlife and nature photography hold her heart, you can contact Kalley for all of your photography needs, including sports, portraits, still life, food, realestate, weddings, and photojournalism. Kalley uses a Canon 7d markii, paired with a Canon 100-400mm lens for all of her photos.

You can purchase photos or prints of Kalley’s wildlife photography on a variety of products (mugs, mousepads, magnets, etc.). Have a favorite animal that you’d like some text included?

Custom orders welcome. Just go to https://kalleycook.smugmug.com or email Kalley. Shipping is available.

Minks are so secretive, and if you’re near dams very much, it’s possible one has crossed your path and you never knew. They are so quick and quiet, which is what makes them so great at hunting. You would think that little eyes and ears can’t see or hear well, but they have excellent eyesight and hearing. As I men tioned earlier about them being solitary animals, you rarely see two together un less it’s mating season or a female with her babies (called kits). Minks don’t make many sounds, but they will purr like a cat when happy and hiss when threatened. They also can spray a foul-smelling odor when alarmed. For the most part, they communicate with one another through chemical signaling, like marking territo ries, especially for the males.

Knoxville Opera presents The Merry Widow

Returning to Knoxville Opera after twenty years, Franz Lehar’s The Merry Widow is an effervescent romantic comedy that follows a group of Pontevedrians living in Paris as they try to convince the titular widow, Hanna Glawari, to marry a Pontevedrian so her vast wealth won’t leave the country.

Operatic high-jinks ensue as Hanna and Count Danilo literally dance around their romantic feelings for each other. This charming show will have you and your family full of joy and delight by the end of the evening. This production is in collaboration with the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre and will feature many students and alumni.

“We see great value in this collaboration and plan to grow and further the oppor tunities with the University of Tennessee Opera Theatre. Investing in these rising young singers enables us to build a strong foundation for a robust, thriving artist community in Knoxville. We intend to rival Barnes, Harper, Heupel, and Vitello in our effort to bring top-tier talent to Knoxville!” says Jason Hardy, General Director

Minks are semi-aquatic, so it only makes sense that they are excellent
swimmers.
They hunt
around the water ’s edge for their food and
will dive 100 feet under the water to search out food on the river bottom. Although
small, these fierce predators are strictly carnivorous
with their diet consisting of frogs, salamanders, fish, mice, ducklings, muskrats, as well as aquatic
birds
and sometimes even
rabbits.
Not only are they great swimmers, but they are also skilled at climbing trees to search for food as well.
This was the actual mink that ran up to me and touched my shoes. I saw it come running toward me, and all I could think to do was sit still. After touching me, it ran back, stopped, and looked at me full of curiosity. It’s showing off that very long neck that minks have. Their cute legs are short with par tially webbed toes built for swimming. Minks have been known to live up to 8 years in the wild with very few natural predators. However, their greatest danger is humans because of water pollution and trapping for their valuable fur. Anytime I am out, especially next to dams, I always try to pick up trash I come across, not just for minks but for all creatures.
