usch Gardens Williamsburg has decked the halls with its popular Christmas Town celebration, which began November 16. For 38 magical days, the world’s most beautiful theme park is transformed into one of the largest Christmas light displays in North America, celebrating the spirit of the season through January 5, 2020. Park-goers will have the chance to not only marvel at more than 10 million lights, but ride the Christmas Town Express holiday-themed train ride, visit in Santa’s Workshop, and partake in festive food, drinks, and unique holiday shopping. New for 2019 is an inspirational holiday music show and all-new Christmas tree maze, where guests will experience holiday traditions celebrated around the world.

“Christmas Town is one of our favorite times of the year, when all of Busch Gardens transforms into a magical holiday landscape,” said Jeff Thomas, interim Park President for Busch Gardens and Water Country USA. “With endless bright lights, magnificent shows, and thrilling new rides, our park is the place to be this holiday season.” Among the many attractions and experiences at Christmas Town, guests will have a chance to deliver their wish lists to jolly ole’ Saint Nick and dine with Mrs. Claus, enjoy musical performances from their favorite Sesame Street® characters, snap memorable photos with everyone’s favorite reindeer, Rudolph, and witness the spectacular returning yuletide shows, including Deck the Halls, Scrooge No More!™, and ’Twas That Night (opens December 22).

Additional 2019 highlights include:

December Highlights

D

From the Publisher

ecember is a great month to reflect back on the current year and start to make plans for the coming year. Why wait for January to begin working on 2020 resolutions? You can start on those resolutions right now. As a business owner, my husband Tom and I periodically evaluate how our business is tracking for the year and make adjustments as necessary. It’s not advisable to get “comfortable” with how you do business. Every so often changes need to be made to a business so that it can continue to grow. And that also applies on a personal and financial level. This month we are pleased to highlight Marsh Wealth Management (on the cover of Section B) and the company’s founders and husband and wife team, Mike and Yvonne Marsh. Don’t let another year go by without planning for your retirement. Let Yvonne and Mike and their team of experts help you to successfully navigate the many uncertainties often experienced during retirement. They are focused on helping you to maintain or enhance your lifestyle whether you’re retired, near retirement or even years away from retirement. Make a sound financial future your top priority and your New Year’s resolution in 2020. Family and their personal and financial security is your most important focus. This holiday season as you prepare for Christmas and New Year’s celebrations, take time to surround yourself with family and engage in conversation and activities. Take a drive to see the pretty decorations and lights in your neighborhood or just take a walk as a family. Make family and the people around you your priority. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views would like to wish all of you, our readers and advertisers, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the season!

Historical Spotlight: Battle of Athens

O

ne of the things that make Athens so unique is its rich history. The Battle of Athens is one of those events that people travel to downtown Athens from miles away to learn more about. In 1946, soldiers returned from World War II to McMinn County, only to find a county government that was controlled often by unethical means. In an attempt to have fair elections, the soldiers joined the Good Government League and were present during the election. Following several scuffles, law enforcement in control of the county attempted to forcibly take the ballot boxes to the county jail to ensure a victory for their party. A battle ensued in the county and came to a climax with the deputies hiding in the jail while thousands of gun rounds were shot into the building. Cars were overturned around the courthouse and the county government was overthrown. This was the only time in history that a government in the U.S. has been overthrown by force. For more information, contact the Tennessee Overhill office at 423-263-7232 for a map of significant locations where events took place of this still much talked about event in American history. There is also an impressive

display on the Battle of Athens at the McMinn County Living Heritage Museum. Historical walking tours are also available.

Christmas and All of That Jazz: Past, Present, Future

A

thens Area Council for the Arts presents the perennial favorite holiday event for two performances on Friday, December 6, and Saturday, December 7, at 7:30 pm at The Arts Center in Downtown Athens. “Jazzy” 2019 takes a nod from AACA’s November 2019 community theatre production A Christmas Carol and embraces the “past, present, future” theme for the variety show. Pam Thigpen, who created “Jazzy,” directs the first of three sets: “Jazzies Past,” which includes performances by AACA veterans Ellen & Art Kimball, Kay & Mike Simmons, Tim Frazier, Rusty Patterson, Janet Martin, Liz Schreck, and Jennifer Blevins. Jennifer Nunley, a long-time participant and director, leads the “Jazzy Present” set, which features performances by Leslie Arnold, Josh Bragg, Dave Graybeal, Abriel Hardaway, Lindsey Kimball, Cynthia McCowan, Emerson McKenzie, Jennifer Nunley, and Lauren Shepherd. Josh Bragg, another long-time participant and director, leads a group of young musicians representing “Jazzies Future” who are Jackie Dodd, Baruch Gabel, Raegan Graves, Cade Hipps, Natalie Leonesio, Hannah McCall, Emma Stratton, Ashleigh Turner, Maddie Watts, and Maddie Yates. Each set will include a mix of choral music and solo performances from a variety of genres, including sacred and spiritual holiday music. The Joe Littleton Holiday Band provides live musical accompaniment and includes Joe Littleton on bass, Andrew Kimball on drums and guitar, Kyle Littleton on guitar, Nathan Crisp on drums, and Cody Hensley on keys and horn. All tickets to “Christmas and all of that Jazz” are $20 and include light refreshments catered by Michael’s. Seating begins at 7 pm, when refreshments and cash bar are available, and the show begins at 7:30 pm. As this event generally sells out, patrons are encouraged to purchase tickets well in advance. Tickets are available now a The Arts Center, over the phone at 423-7458781, or online at www.athensartscouncil.org.

President of SNAP (Spay/Neuter Volunteer Assistance to Pets) to Retire Grant Writer SNAP to Merge with Monroe County Friends of Animals

M

ike Cleverdon recently announced that after 20 years, effective April 1, 2020, he will step down as president of SNAP. Beginning at a date to be announced, SNAP will become an important part of Monroe County Friends of Animals, and its mission will continue to be as it always has been since its incorporation. “We are excited and honored to be selected to carry on the work that Mike and his SNAP volunteers have done over the years,” said Jim Barrett, Monroe County Friends of Animals President. “I am confident that the mission of SNAP will continue under the direction of Monroe County Friends of Animals,” said Cleverdon. “We share a common goal to eliminate euthanasia of healthy cats and dogs in Monroe County.” Since SNAP incorporated in 2003, more than 19,000 spay/ neuter surgeries of dogs and cats have been completed. These surgeries contributed significantly to the 92% reduction in shelter euthanasia since the peak year of 2009. Simple math provides the answer to why successful spay or neutering has such a dramatic impact on reducing the euthanasia rate. Imagine if, on the average, the 19,000 cats and dogs that had spay/neuter surgeries had

sired or birthed two litters that totaled 12 kittens or puppies. The population of unwanted kittens and dogs could be as much as an additional 228,000 (12 x 19,000) unwanted animals born in Monroe County. “That’s what makes Longtime Monroe County investing in spay/neuter resident, Mike Cleverdon, to such a smart investment,” step down from his position said Cleverdon. “The as President of SNAP (Spay/ Neuter Assistance to Pets) procedure reduces the suffering of unwanted cats and dogs and the cost to the county in housing and euthanizing the animals. Our work in providing vouchers to financially distressed families assures that everyone can afford to have their cat or dog spayed or neutered.” The SNAP program costs county taxpayers little or nothing. SNAP funds are provided from foundations after completing a formal grant application and approval process. Grant awards typically range from $1,000 to $10,000, with a few reaching $25,000. One of the top priorities at Monroe County Friends of Animals is to have a new SNAP grant manager in place by year end. Plans are to have Cleverdon train the new grant manager during the first quarter of 2020 and be available on a consulting basis thereafter. Computer skills including Internet, Word, and Excel are essential for this work. All work can be done from home. “Anyone who wants to be considered for this unpaid volunteer position or knows of a candidate, please contact Mike Cleverdon at 423-884-6801 or cleverdon190@tds. net,” said Barret.

About SNAP

SNAP attacks the root cause of the pet overpopulation problem – unwanted litters. SNAP provides free spay/neuter vouchers to low income residents of Monroe County to sterilize their cats and dogs. Low income pet owners are targeted because they are the major source of unwanted litters, strays, and abandoned pets, and most cannot afford the cost of sterilization surgery or unwanted litters. Voucher recipients must meet SNAP low income criteria and provide proof of residence to receive a free voucher. Vouchers are accepted at three local veterinary hospitals. About 98% of all SNAP income is used to pay veterinary spay/neuter surgery costs. For more information, visit www.monroecountyfriendsofanimals.org/snap.html.

About Monroe County Friends of Animals

Who Loves Cats and Dogs Needed for Important Job

S

NAP (Spay/Neuter Assistance for Pets, Inc.) is currently searching for a retiree who is passionate about cats and dogs and is looking for ways to give back to the community. The ideal candidate will have basic computer skills including Internet, Excel, and Word and knowledge and interest in animal welfare. As Grant Manager, you will obtain and administer grants for our outstanding spay/neuter program and serve on the SNAP Board of Directors. In addition, you will interact with foundations, organizations, and our SNAP team to administer new grants from initial funding application to final report. As a member of our team, you will be part of a success story that has helped reduce the number of unwanted cats and dogs by providing free spay/ neuter services to financially distressed families. To date, we have obtained grants totaling more than $1 million, which has paid for 19,000 spay/neuters. To put that in perspective, if those surgeries had not been performed and each of the 19,000 cats and dogs either birthed or sired two litters totaling 12 offspring, that would be 228,000 additional unwanted cats and dogs born in our community. Our work has contributed heavily to the 90% reduction in euthanasia at the Monroe County Animal Shelter since 2009. This is your chance to continue the SNAP tradition of success in helping reduce the population of unwanted cats and dogs. Act now and contact Mike Cleverdon at 423-884-6801 or cleverdon190@tds. net. All SNAP officers, board members, and volunteers are unpaid, and 98% of all SNAP income is used to pay for veterinary spay/neuter surgery expense. For more information, visit www.spayneuter-monroe-tn-snap.webs.com.

The mission of Monroe County Friends of Animals is to provide for, and continuously improve, the health, happiness, and fortunes of the homeless and abandoned cats and dogs in Monroe County, Tennessee. Since its founding in 2004, the organization has helped save the lives of more than 25,000 cats and dogs. Through fundraising efforts, grants, donations, and the operation of a thrift store, Monroe County Friends of Animals contributes more than 30% of the operating budget of the Monroe County Animal Shelter. It also supports county spay/ neuter efforts, transporting adoptable cats and dogs to rescues, and the raising of funds for the construction of a new county shelter.

Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is Back at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

he Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is now open, and it is steaming us towards the holidays. During the past months, the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have been hard at work putting the intricate details on the exhibits and are now enjoying the reactions of the guests of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend. “The new additions that the club has created really help tell the story of Townsend, as well as bringing the holiday spirit to East Tennessee,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “We are so glad that the Heritage Center is becoming a part of folks’ holiday traditions. With the addition of our Hands-On Discovery Zone for kids, families get to enjoy their time together and make new memories!” “It has taken a lot of highly detailed work and a great deal of time to complete, but the end product is worth the effort,” said Allan Gartner, President of the Maryville Model Railroad Club.

Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit Hours of Operation: Friday-Saturday 10 am – 5 pm Sunday 12 – 5 pm

Museum Hours of Operation through January 5th, 2020: Monday-Saturday 10 am – 5 pm Sunday 12 – 5 pm

The MMRC has volunteered hundreds of hours to create the exhibit and to make sure everything is running smoothly. Some of the new models that have been added to the exhibit include the Kinzel Springs Hotel, a replica of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, and the Little River Saw Mill. Each day that the trains are running, a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer questions and to show how they operate the trains. Additionally, with the opening of the Hands-On Discovery Zone, families get to join in on the fun of trains. Specially designed with young children in mind, the Discovery Zone has multiple train tables where children get to experiment, build, and show off their creativity in an area just their size! “As a teaching museum, letting kids be kids and being hands-on is very important, and by offering the Discovery Zone, we hope that a love of history and trains will be instilled,” said Hull. “We have supplied the track, trains, and wooden building logs, so bring out your Junior Engineers!” “Letting my children play while also learning about the history of the area is an amazing way to spend the day,” said Jennifer Bowen, Maryville resident. “I majored in history at Maryville College, so this is especially meaningful to our family, and we love coming out to the Heritage Center.” The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit and the Hands-On Discovery Zone are up and running on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through January 5th. Admission to the exhibit is included in the museum admission ($8 adults, $6 seniors and children 6 and up). It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. The experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center and to children 5 and under. To enjoy all the benefits of membership to the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, call 865-448-0044 or ask about it at the front desk on your next visit. Membership includes museum admission, most special events, concerts, and discounts on items in the gift shop, and it’s good for 12 months. The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is made possible by the generous support of our sponsors: Blount Partnership, East Tennessee Foundation, Richardson Construction, and Herb Handly. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, which opened in 2006, preserves, interprets, and shares the history and culture of the diverse peoples and Native Americans who have inhabited the Southern Appalachians, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and offers exhibitions and programs for educational and cultural enrichment. It is a registered 501(c)(3) not-for-profit. Located on the “quiet side of the Smokies” in Townsend, the Heritage Center offers gallery exhibits, educational programs, demonstrations, and festivals to guide you on a historic journey through time to visit the diverse cultures of Townsend and Tuckaleechee Cove. Museum of Appalachia Honors General Carl Stiner and Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. at

“Heroes of Southern Appalachia” Award

L

ast month, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Museum of Appalachia presented its firstever “Heroes of Southern Appalachia” awards to General Carl Stiner and the late Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. The fireside reception hall overflowed with attendees eager to pay tribute to these two “heroes” who dedicated their lives to service. Deborah York, great-granddaughter of World War I hero Sgt. Alvin C. York and Executive Director of the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation, explained the impact General Stiner has had on all branches of our nation’s special forces, while United States Senator Lamar Alexander reflected on the life and legacy of Senator Baker. “We thought honoring those who truly embody the spirit of the Appalachian people and have fearlessly and selflessly served this region would be a wonderful way to commemorate this milestone anniversary,” said Elaine Irwin Meyer, Museum of Appalachia President. The criteria for choosing recipients included honoring a person(s) from the Southern Appalachian region who exemplifies the characteristics of perseverance, fortitude, self-reliance, and service. United States Army Four-Star General Carl Stiner from LaFollette, Tennessee, has had a lasting impact on all branches of U.S. military special forces. His 35-year career includes involvement in capturing the Achille Lauro terrorists, apprehending Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega, and all special operations during Desert Storm, and he was the second Commander in Chief of the United States Special Operations. “General Stiner transformed special operations in our country by tearing down walls of inefficiency and building collaboration and cooperation that had never existed before,” said Deborah York. “He is a hometown hero who has had an enduring influence on our American military, as well as our nation’s security. He is as good a man as he was a soldier and has a heart for his community and his home state. We owe a debt of gratitude for General Stiner’s years of service and sacrifice to our great nation, and I am honored to present him with this award.” Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. grew up in Huntsville, Tennessee, or as he called it, “the center of the known universe.” The first popularly elected Republican senator in Tennessee history, he earned the nickname “The Great Conciliator” in his roles as Senate minority and majority leader because of his reputation as a fair and thoughtful leader. His extensive public service, which also included roles as President Reagan’s chief of staff and U.S. Ambassador to Japan, earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “How fortunate we were to know, to be inspired by, and to learn from Tennessee’s favorite son and one of our country’s finest leaders, Howard Baker,” said Alexander. “The nation got to know him during the Watergate hearings. He then became the majority leader of the United States Senate, chief of staff for President Reagan, and President George W. Bush’s Ambassador to Japan. He began an era of two-party competition that has changed Tennessee politics permanently. By his eloquence and personality, Howard inspired a number of young men and women,

including me, to join him in that endeavor. Howard made us Tennesseans look even better, and I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive the museum’s first-ever Heroes of Southern Appalachia Award.” As a non-profit, Smithsonian affiliated organization, the museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts and culture

of an earlier time for the benefit of future generations and to instill in the community – regionally, nationally, and internationally – a greater knowledge of and appreciation for Southern Appalachian heritage. The museum is located 16 miles north of Knoxville at I-75, exit 122. For more information, visit www.museumofappalachia.org.

Knoxville Community Invited to Celebrate Our Diversity at “Lights & L’Chaim” – A Celebration of Music and Foods of Our Holiday Seasons

T

he Jewish observance of Hanukkah, also known as the “Festival of Lights,” will be celebrated at the Foundry on Sunday, December 15, at “Lights & L’Chaim” – a community-wide event to usher in the spirit of holiday celebrations. “L’Chaim” means “To Life!” in Hebrew. And Lights & L’Chaim will definitely celebrate our many traditions with delightful music and delicious foods featuring holiday-inspired menu and songs from Klezmer, gospel, soul, and Arabic traditions. This year’s program offers a special treat: Combining the energizing musical experience of local Knoxville band Dor L’Dor with the outstanding jazz, gospel, and soul sounds of vocalist (and ukulele player extraordinaire) Kelle Jolly and her multi-woodwind instrumentalist husband, Will Boyd, two of the leading figures in Knoxville’s jazz scene. Also joining the program this year will be members of Sawt al-Wadi (“Voice of the Valley,” formerly known as the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble) directed by Dr. Lillie Gordon and members of the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Praise Team. Proceeds will support Heska Amuna Synagogue’s new community outreach initiative slated to begin in 2020 to revitalize the inspirational efforts of Gene Rosenberg, a congregant who died last year. Gene single-handedly engaged thousands of children, teens, and adults through his “traveling trunk” program. He filled trunks with artifacts from hate crimes – shackles, a piece of the World Trade Center, a charred cross – to encourage dialogue on promoting tolerance for all people. Funds will provide educator stipends to share this program across our community. How do these genres mix? Dor L’Dor (which means “generation to generation” in Hebrew) characterizes the music and the makeup of the band, originally comprised of Ken and Susan Brown and their three children, all now professional musicians. “While Klezmer music may have originated in Eastern Europe borrowing melodies and rhythms from European countries and traditions, it has always been a true melting pot of cultures across generations with each generation drawing from and adding to the tradition,” said Ken Brown. “We’re excited to have Kelle and Will and members of Sawt al-Wadi and the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church Praise Team join us, and we invite all of Knoxville to experience this concert. Help us build a

Event chairs Kim Hedrick and

Frank Floyd welcome the community to our holiday celebration. In their words, “L’Chaim is a traditional Jewish toast that simply means ‘To Life!’ We’re looking forward to sharing our culture and raising a toast to life with all of you.” Heska Amuna Synagogue wishes to acknowledge Mayor Madeline Rogero and the City of Knoxville’s Community Agency Grants program and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs for supporting this community cultural event.

About Heska Amuna Synagogue

he 2019 Christmas season commences at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village on Sunday, December 1, with the annual Hanging of the Green at both the 8:50 and 10:15 morning worship services. According to Pastor Charlie Barnard, “This has been our tradition for 14 years of our 22 years of existence as a church.” Throughout the service, Pastor Barnard explains the significance of each of the traditional decorations of Christmas as they are placed in the sanctuary while carols are sung by the congregation. This year’s Christmas celebrations, which continue throughout the month, will abound with music. On Monday evening, December 2, Minister of Music Emeritus, Eugene Hattaway, presents a “Carol Sing” featuring The WhiteStone Singers. “For more than 20 years, the WhiteStone Singers have been providing music in the community for Christmas, July 4, and other special occasions,” said Hattaway. “The chorus is made up of 16 singers from area churches and community choruses.” The choral group will be accompanied by the First Baptist Church of Tellico Village Orchestra, along with members from Knoxville Symphony. The concert begins at 7 pm in the sanctuary and is open to the community free of charge. Friday, December 13, is the annual Christmas Tree Lighting at the Village Square at 6 pm. “The Community Tree Lighting is part of our gift back to the community,” said Pastor Barnard. “We have had a Community Christmas Service for the past 14 years, and we always invite the churches of our community to join us in the celebration. This year the HOA joins us to make it an even larger Community Tree Lighting. Santa and one of his elves will make a special appearance, and the Tellico Singers will lead us in the singing of Christmas Carols.” All residents of the village are invited to the merriment of this special Christmas gathering. The following Sunday and Monday, December 15 and 16, the FBCTV Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra present “The Joy of Christmas” at 7 pm in the church sanctuary. “We are excited each Christmas for the opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ with our community through music,” said David Whipple, Minister of Music. “This program is comprised of a variety of Christmas choral pieces presented in a variety of styles. We are honored to include several exceptional musicians, including members of the Knoxville Symphony, who will be joining our own excellent orchestra to accompany our choir in this presentation. Also, the talented Sauni Rinehart will provide narration for the program. I am confident that those who attend will leave with joy in their hearts as we celebrate anew the birth of Jesus.” Again, this is a free concert that is open to all. The most significant night of the season, of course, is Christmas Eve. The church honors the holiness of the season with a traditional Candlelight Service at 5 pm. Please join us at First Baptist Church of Tellico Village as we join together to celebrate the wondrous birth of Christ our Lord. A Talk Back with the actors will take place Sunday, December 8, following the matinee. The Open Captioned performance is Sunday, December 15, at 2 pm. In “A Christmas Carol,” miserly boss, Ebenezer Scrooge, is forced to face the true cost of his behavior in a series of supernatural visits from ghosts of Christmases Past, Present, and Future. “Remembrance and forgiveness, ignorance and want – those four concepts continually circled my thoughts as I prepared for this production of ‘A Christmas Carol’ and reconsidered the impact of Charles Dickens’s classic novel,” said Kathleen F. Conlin, Director. “His Victorian world – so similar to our own – contained the hollows of despair for a remarkable number of his countrymen. Poverty, homelessness, and hunger disenfranchised children and adults as they scrambled for a few crumbs of human warmth and decency. Not content to simply contrast this cultural underbelly to Victorian middle-class comfort, Dickens ingeniously chose to tell of the transformation of one man whose own heart mirrors that disenfranchisement from generosity and mercy.” Conlin has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as professional stage director, casting director, associate artistic director, university administrator, and award-winning professor. She served for 22 seasons as Associate Artistic Director and Casting Director for Utah Shakespeare Festival. She has guest directed at Kent State University, Illinois Opera in productions at the Krannert Center, Definition Theatre, a multi-ethnic professional theatre in Chicago, Colony Theatre in LA, Peterborough Players Michigan Repertory, Theatre South Carolina, and others. At the University of Illinois, she served as both Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts and the Barnard Hewitt Professor of Theatre/Director in Residence. A native of Ohio, she also has served as Director of Theatre at Ohio University and Chair of Theatre at Ohio State University. She was most recently the Frank B. Weeks Visiting Professor and Department Chair at Wesleyan University in Connecticut. Terry Silver-Alford (Musical Director) serves as Distinguished Lecturer for the UT Theatre Department and teaches Musical Theatre Performance, Honors Introduction to the Theatre and Acting. t’s hard to believe that next year marks the 50th year since The Beatles broke up, each going their own creative ways. Since the break-up, there’s been a plethora of books, movies, compilation albums, and documentaries. Someone who was there pretty much from the get-go is the legendary Peter Asher. For those of you who don’t know who Peter is, he is the “Peter” of the ’60s British duo, Peter and Gordon. Their first big hit as a song was “A World Without Love,” written by Paul McCartney, who happened to be engaged at the time to Peter’s sister, actress Jane Asher. Peter later moved into artist management, with people like James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt among his clients. He has also been a record label executive and prolific record producer for a wide range of artists such as Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, Andrew Gold, and J.D. Southern. If you’re a SiriusXM subscriber, you may have caught Peter’s show, From Me to You, on the Beatles Channel (channel 18). When he’s not on the radio, he’s performing shows with Jeremy Clyde (of Chad & Jeremy). Amid all of this, Peter has written an interesting and intriguing book entitled The Beatles from A to Zed. The book is a natural off shoot from his satellite radio program. In it, he shares his reflections into a unique alphabetical journey through

some of the Beatles’ songs that happen to start with each letter. He spotlights recurring themes within the songs, talks about the instruments used, and other interesting factoids behind and about the songs. I chatted with Peter by phone as he was working on some advance recordings of his radio show. He shared what the advance buzz was on his book. “Apparently people seem to be liking it,” he said. “There have been a few advanced reviews that have been very positive, so I don’t know. The book world is new to me. I’ve got some friends who are authors, but I’ve never had a book out before. So it’s a different process. And it’s fascinating. But apparently they tell me everything is going very positively and that the reaction, so far, is good. So we shall wait and see. “I love that it rambles quite freely. But it’s not, in any sense, an encyclopedia or meant to be any sort of a definitive reference book. I think the description of it is alphabetical mystery tour, which was the thought. It is quite apt in the sense that I’d sort of follow a similar idea with my radio show, follow the story wherever it led me. And use the alphabet as a very rough format. It doesn’t use the alphabet for just song titles, but people and places and musical instruments and musical styles and all kinds of stuff. It’s a very freeform encyclopedia. “So as far as what I hope people get out

of it, I hope they’re entertained by it, that they’re amused by the passage of time. But I also hope that maybe they listen to the music with a new appreciation; that it (the music) is actually brilliant how The Beatles were and are.” What is the biggest misconception of the Beatles? “I think because it ended in some arguments and anger, perhaps people give undue weight to that part of the story and forget how incredibly well they got along for so many years,” said Peter. “They were an incredibly well-blended band. It was the perfect storm both musically and personality wise and everything. They fit together so extraordinarily well when I did have an opportunity to watch them work together in the studio or on a project or whatever. I think the misconception is that, like all bands, they did end with some arguing and some anger. But I think one forgets the extent to which they were genuinely cohesive, coherent, and a creative whole for a long time. And that’s how they created this body of work that is unequaled

in the history of rock and roll.” Concluding our chat, I closed our conversation by asking how Peter hopes to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “Maybe one is supposed to worry about one’s legacy,” he said. “But other than leaving my family well and my wife and daughter and all of that, I don’t really have any post-death ambitions, nor do I have any belief that there is any such thing as post-death. So as far as I’m concerned, you’re dead and it’s all over and that’s it. As a staunch atheist, I find myself minding not very much about after I’m dead.” There is quite a bit more to this interview that you can read at www.boomerocity. com. Catch Peter’s show, From Me to You, on SiriusXM and follow him at www. PeterandGordontheSingles.com.

Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Charitable Giving and the Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

re you over 70 ½ and have an IRA? If so, you should be taking your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Also, if you donate to charities, you have an opportunity to save some taxes. IRA owners over 70 ½ should consider supporting your favorite charities using a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). A QCD is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year as long as certain rules are met. Under the new Tax Cut and Jobs Act (TCJA), the standard deduction for 2019 will increase to $24,400. For those taxpayers over 65, there is an additional $2,600. It is very likely the $24,400 or $27,000 standard deductions will be greater than any itemized deductions. When you reach the age of 70 ½, you must start taking a Required Minimum

Distribution (RMD) from your non-Roth IRAs. Most RMDs are taxable and are included in income and increase the adjusted gross income (AGI). This increase often results in an increased portion of Social Security benefits being taxed and some deductions being limited. The Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows an IRA owner over the age of 70 ½ to make a charitable contribution directly from their IRA up to $100,000, without including the distribution in taxable income. This presents a significant opportunity to make a charitable contribution through a QCD and not increase your AGI. Although the QCD comes out of your IRA and satisfies your annual RMD, it is not reported as income on your tax return, as it goes directly to the charity of your choice. This allows you to claim the standard deduction of $27,000 and the QCD. Here’s an example. Assume you and your spouse are both over 70 ½ and you anticipate a taxable income totaling

$80,000, not including your RMD. You generally donate about $10,000 to your favorite charities each year. You will claim a standard deduction of $27,000 since both of you are over the age of 65. Since the standard deduction includes the deduction for charitable donations, you get no additional benefit for the donation. If you and your spouse are required to withdraw $10,000 to satisfy your RMD and you donate it to your favorite charity, your taxable income is increased by the $10,000 RMD and your standard deduction remains at $27,000. You are taxed on the $10,000 RMD. However, if you make a QCD directly to your favorite charity, it satisfies your RMD and is not included in your taxable income. You claim the $27,000 standard deduction and save taxes on the $10,000 RMD. This could be a potential tax savings of several thousands of dollars. Some rules do apply. The donation must be transferred directly from your

IRA custodian to the charity. The QCD is capped at $100,000 per person each year. RMDs are deemed to be satisfied by the first distributions from your IRA for the year, so if you wish to satisfy your RMD by a QCD, it needs to be your first distributions of the year. Lastly, married couples who each have an IRA each can contribute up to $100,000 from their own IRA. When making a QCD, you must receive the same type of acknowledgement of the donation that you would need to claim a deduction for a charitable contribution. The bottom line is IRA owners who wish to lower their adjusted gross incomes can use the Qualified Charitable Distribution strategy to efficiently disperse money to a charity of their choice and save taxes. As your tax advisor, the professionals at WarrenJackson CPAs can help you determine if both your IRA and charity qualify for QCDs. Contact one of our offices to speak to a tax professional.

LakeHomes.com Awards 2019 Best Retirement Lakes

December, 2019, East Tennessee’s Mountain Views • 19A

L

akeHomes.com, the leading web destination for lake real estate data and sales information, has identified its list of 2019 Best Retirement Lakes (www.lakehomes.com/info/articles-and-news/2019-bestretirement-lakes). The list was compiled with data from Lake Homes Realty’s quarterly Lake Real Estate Market Report (www.lakehomes.com/info/lake-real-estatemarket-reports) in conjunction with the 2019 SmartAsset Best Places to Retire (https://smartasset.com/retirement/ where-to-retire). The editorial committee measured markets with a minimum lake market listings value of $10 million. The criteria included data points such as accessibility to healthcare facilities and the portion of the existing population that are senior citizens, along with each area’s cost of living and tax burden. “Our data tells us that lake real estate buyers and sellers are primarily retirees or soon to be retired individuals,” said Mark Griggs, Marketing Director of Lake Homes Realty/LakeHomes.com. “Buyers often shop across multiple states and lakes to find the ideal location for their life stage. We have compiled our list of the best lakes based on the top retirement preferences for this demographic.” The awarded lakes for 2019 are: » Lake Granbury, Texas » Lake Hickory, North Carolina » Lake Lanier, Georgia » Lake Guntersville, Alabama » Lake Keowee, South Carolina » Tellico Lake, Tennessee » Lake of the Woods, Virginia “Our lake focused real estate agents are experts in helping customers find the perfect property to fit any lifestyle,” said Glenn S. Phillips, CEO of Lake Homes Realty/LakeHomes.com. “Each one of our agents live, work, and play on the lakes they service. That local knowledge includes awareness of the attractive qualities that retirees are seeking.” “I was so excited to hear the news about Tellico Lake receiving this award,” said Karen Packett, listing/selling broker on Tellico Lake and Fort Loudoun Lake with Lake Homes Realty. “I’ve lived here all my life, and to see

Tellico Lake and all the lake communities like Tellico Village and Rarity Bay experiencing such wonderful growth is heartwarming. Since I specialize in lake community properties on Tellico Lake, I truly feel blessed to be able to introduce my buyers to my wonderful area and all we have to offer!”

(From L to R) Karen Packett with Mitch Ingram, Monroe County Mayor, and Blaina Tallent Best, Monroe County Director of Tourism.

(From L to R) Rachel Baker, Director of Tourism for Visit Loudon County, Karen Packett, Lake Homes Realty listing/ selling broker on Tellico Lake and Fort Loudoun Lake, and Rodney Grugin, President of the Loudon County Chamber of Commerce.

“As we continue to build our marketing strategies for both travel inspiration and retiree relocation, we are proud that Tellico Lake has been recognized as one of the Best Retirement Lakes by LakeHomes.com,” said Rachel Baker, Director of Tourism for Visit Loudon County. “As retirees are estimated to visit a community three to five times before making a decision to relocate, it is a natural fit for our organization to target this demographic.” Loudon and Monroe counties have become an ideal location to visit and to retire. Retirees become “permanent tourists,” according to Baker, seeking a well-positioned location with easy access to a metro area and airport, access to premier healthcare, and a low cost of living. No state income tax, four mild seasons, extensive outdoor recreation, and community-focused amenities are also desired among today’s retiree.

“We are honored to be considered one of the best retirement lakes in the nation in 2019,” said Monroe County Mayor Mitch Ingram. “We are excited that Tellico Lake is receiving the recognition that reflects the true experience it offers to our retirees in this area,” said Blaina Tallent Best, Monroe County Director of Tourism. “We invite anyone looking to retire to consider Tellico Lake. You will not regret retiring here.”

enced travel guide, how can Marsh Wealth Management help me to successfully navigate my retirement? Yvonne: We know the number one goal for retirees is to maintain their lifestyle in retirement without the worry of running out of money. So our approach is three-fold: First, we help people define what their lifestyle is going to look like. Second, we help them identify potential pitfalls or obstacles and come up with solutions that fit them. Then, just as importantly, we act as their guide on this “retirement trip,” making sure everything works smoothly leading up to retirement, the transition from a paycheck to a play check is seamless, and all of the little gotchas are taken care of for them. Their biggest task is deciding on their first post-work vacation! MV: Mike, what is the number one mistake would-be and existing retirees make in planning? Mike: They stay aggressively invested for too long as they’re approaching retirement. The Fragile Decade – the five years leading up to retirement and the five years after retirement – is the most critical time period in predicting

e work our entire lives with the goal of achieving a sound retirement. But as the time draws near, we often become apprehensive, recognizing that retirement is much more than the savings that you’ve managed to accumulate and your newfound free time. You find yourself asking: » Will I need to reduce my spending in retirement? » Is there a chance I will outlive my retirement savings? » Will future tax increases erode my savings? » How will I be able to afford an unexpected medical emergency? And that doesn’t count the more concrete questions of when to start Social Security and which Medicare supplement plan to choose. Retirement is uncharted waters. You’ve observed your parents and others during retirement, you search online for retirement related subjects, you share experiences and expectations with family and friends. You make the best decisions you can, often guided only by your gut instinct. But in retirement, there are no do-overs, so a growing number of people are choosing professional help with a comprehensive approach that combines investment advice with financial planning, tax strategies, insurance solutions, and legal planning. In this month’s issue of Mountain Views, we are delighted to share with you our recent interview with Marsh Wealth Management founders, and husband and wife team, Mike and Yvonne Marsh. Having earned a well-deserved reputation among retirees for their comprehensive approach to retirement planning, we are confident that you will enjoy their thoughts on retirement whether you’re retired, near retirement, or years away from retirement. MV: Yvonne, I enjoyed the analogy on your website comparing the navigation of retirement to planning a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before. Like an experi-

the success of a 30+ year retirement plan. Waiting until a year or two ahead of retirement to reduce the risk in your portfolio is waiting too long. MV: The equity markets have a long history of very good returns on average, but I’m fearful of losing money in a market downturn. What suggestions do you have for me? Mike: We use an investment bucketing strategy that allocates a client’s portfolio into time segments: Now, Soon, and Later. The idea is simply that the Now buckcontinued on page 2A ...

ou’re watching what you eat, you’re staying active, but you’re still unhappy with your body shape. Sound familiar? That stubborn problem area on your waistline can be annoyingly resistant to diet and exercise. That’s where the truSculpt® 3D procedure can help. Developed by Cutera, the global pioneer in performance and innovation within the cosmetic and aesthetic laser device field, the non-invasive, truSculpt® 3D procedure can help you sculpt your body by quickly and easily targeting both large and small problem areas. We recently interviewed J. Kevin Buchanan, MD, Knoxville area’s family practice physician and truSculpt® 3D practitioner, to discover just how this revolutionary, new, state-of-the-art medical breakthrough can help patients treat those problem areas around their midsections. MV: Dr. Buchanan, truSculpt® 3D uses radio frequency technology to help decrease circumference and diminish fat in patients. Tell our readers just how this technology works. Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D uses

conductive radio frequency to achieve selective and effective disruption of the subcutaneous fat tissue, the fat that lies directly beneath the skin, while maintaining comfortable surface temperatures. MV: Just how safe is truSculpt® 3D? Dr. Buchanan: truSculpt® 3D, which is FDA cleared, is a safe, non-invasive body sculpting technology, where the temperature of the skin and subcutaneous tissue are maintained at comfortable levels while consistently achieving the best results. MV: How quickly will clients see visible results? Dr. Buchanan: Visible results can usually be seen as soon 6 to 12 weeks, with maximum benefits at 12 weeks. Some clients report seeing results in as little as 4 to 6 weeks. MV: How much fat thickness reduction will patients experience? Dr. Buchanan: Clients can expect fat reduction of targeted areas of up to 24%. MV: Is it possible to treat more than one problem area per session? Dr. Buchanan: Yes, it is possible to

treat multiple areas in a single session, including the neck, upper arms, abdomen and flanks, back, and thighs. MV: Should clients experience any discomfort or downtime after the procedure? Dr. Buchanan: Some clients may experience some redness of the skin that typically resolves itself in 8 to 12 hours. Others report soreness of the treatment area that may last for a few days. There is no restriction on activity following the procedure. MV: Treatments are administered by an NP or medical assistant under your personal supervision, correct? Dr. Buchanan: We have a nurse practitioner, two medical assistants, and myself who are all trained and certified to perform the truSculpt® 3D procedure. MV: How can our readers who are interested learn more about the truSculpt® 3D? What is the best way to reach you? Dr. Buchanan: Call Ashley Burchfield at 865-675-1953 ext. 224 for more information or to schedule a free consultation or visit www.tru3dbody.com.

Marsh Wealth Management et is rainy day, emergency, and planned expenses tucked safely in bank accounts. The Soon bucket is money earmarked for spending in a retiree’s first phase of retirement and more conservatively invested, while the Later bucket is money designated for the second phase of retirement so it can have more growth orientation. We all know that we build wealth by staying invested in the markets over time, and this three-tiered allocation gives our clients the confidence to do just that. MV: How can you help me overcome the often high costs arising from an unexpected medical emergency that was not in my spending plan? Yvonne: By helping you be proactive and not reactive: Planning for those costs before they happen. First, we help clients identify and quantify which costs aren’t covered by Medicare, and then we talk about their options. Many folks don’t know there is a great option that pays for home health care, assisted living, and other longterm care costs and also provides a death benefit to heirs if you don’t end up needing those benefits. The cost and the benefits are guaranteed at issue, so it really creates a lot of clarity and confidence for today’s retirees. It’s a great solution, but only about one out of every 10 people I talk to have ever heard of it. MV: What is the impact to today’s retirees who are living longer than either their parents or grandparents? Mike: We think of longer life spans as a risk multiplier – it multiplies the number of times to which your portfolio could experience a market correction and the higher likelihood someone will experience an expensive health event. And inflation is a sneaky factor that can really eat into a retiree’s ability to afford everything they are used to buying. We work with clients to design strategies that will serve them well no matter how long they live. Yvonne: That’s right. I never want an 85 year old client to come to me and say, “Well, it’s been fun, but I’m out of money.” Our plans are designed to last as long as they do! MV: What if the government should raise taxes during

cover article continued ...

my retirement years? Yvonne: Well, truthfully, we already know that they are going to raise taxes when our current tax code expires at the end of 2025. It’s already written into the law that our personal tax rates will revert back to the higher preTax Cuts and Job Act of 2017 levels. So taxes are on sale right now! Many people should be, at a minimum, executing Roth IRA conversion strategies up to and within the current 24% bracket. That is an integral service we offer to our wealth management clients. MV: It’s obvious that a successful retirement plan includes a great many considerations. How can you help me create a comprehensive plan that will help me to sleep at night? Yvonne: It’s so true that the devil is in the details. And we actually start with some non-financial details – such as reviewing healthcare directives and identity theft protection and providing a survivor’s guide for heirs. Some clients don’t need extensive financial planning, so we focus on creating an Investment Bucket Strategy that can sustain their income needs. Other clients need extensive financial and tax planning, so we create a comprehensive plan addressing those needs. It’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all process. MV: What is the best way to select a qualified wealth advisor as I’m trying to navigate all of the financial decisions a retiree has to make? Yvonne: First, understand how they are paid. A fiduciary

is compensated as a percentage of assets, whereas a broker dealer is compensated by commissions on account activity. You have to decide which business model best aligns with your own interests. Second, professional credentials are important, and we proudly have CFP®s and CPAs in our office. The continuing education commitment that these licenses require keep us technically sharp. Third, and just as important, is finding someone you can connect with on a personal level. Your advisor is there to guide you through a journey that will be uniquely yours – and you want to have a relationship that you are confident to call on at any time. MV: We’ve talked a great deal about would-be and existing retirees, but what about those of us that are still working and saving for retirement? Where’s the best place to invest our savings? Mike: By far, the number one thing we get asked by people still working is “Can you help me with my 401(k)?” And truthfully, this is a huge societal issue. Companies have moved away from pensions and put the burden of saving and investing on their employees, but the vast majority of people don’t know which investments to choose. And who wants to go home after a hard day at work and research mutual fund choices while you’re juggling kids and dinner? So we’ve just introduced a service called Plan Confidence, which allows us to help people choose their 401(k) investments, using the mutual funds that their employer offers, with no IRA rollovers needed. The money stays right in the 401(k). It’s a monthly subscription service, and we connect with clients through a secure website and mobile app. No office visits required for busy people! MV: How can I learn more about Marsh Wealth Management? Do you offer a complimentary consultation to determine if there is a “good fit” between your integrated team and myself? Yvonne: Our website is always a great place to start. We’ve worked hard to lay out how we approach retirement planning and the strategies that we employ, so it gives people an easy first step to see if we would be a good fit for them. Then give our office a call to set up a time where we can introduce ourselves and hear your story – what you’re excited about and what you’re worried about – and decide how we might be of help to you on your retirement journey. MV: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Yvonne and Mike: Truly, we are all in this together. Everyone’s future is equally unknown, and there’s no need to try to figure it out by yourself. Our entire team believes in building long-lasting relationships with our clients – to be that resource that gives you a guiding hand, a word of encouragement, or an ear to just listen. We know there will be unexpected twists and turns in your retirement journey, but we’re here every step of the way, so you can relax! Visit Knoxville Announces Partnership on Sunsphere Ornament to Benefit the Sunsphere

isit Knoxville is proud to partner with Knoxville natives Guinn and Derek Boyce to present a first-ever, hand-crafted glass ornament of the Sunsphere. The Boyces commissioned the ornament from Joy to the World Collectibles, a Knoxville-based company. Each ornament is meticulously crafted by hand by European artisans. Ornaments will be available for purchase at the Knoxville Visitors Center, located at 301 S. Gay Street, and online at www.sunspherefund.com. Cost of the ornament is $55 plus tax. Five dollars from the purchase of each ornament will go to the Sunsphere Fund, a fund created by Visit Knoxville, with the city’s support, to help preserve and maintain this beloved city icon. Ornaments may be shipped for an additional fee, or a free pickup location may be selected. Only 500 Sunsphere ornaments will be available before Christmas. Additional ornaments will be available for purchase in January 2020. The idea for the ornament originated with Knoxville natives Guinn and Derek Boyce. TURN KEY INTERIOR DESIGN

About the Sunsphere Since 1982, the Sunsphere, the symbol of the 1982 World’s Fair, has served as an iconic feature of the Knoxville skyline. It’s the only structure of its kind in the world. After the World’s Fair, with brief exception, the Sunsphere was closed to the public. It reopened after renovation in 2007. In 2014, in an effort to provide an enhanced experience for visitors and locals, Visit Knoxville updated the 4th Floor Observation Deck with new graphics and information on Knoxville and the World’s Fair. Since that time, the Sunsphere has welcomed countless visitors from (rather appropriately) around the world. Designed by the architecture firm Community Tectonics as the theme structure for the 1982 World’s Fair, the Sunsphere is noted for its unique design and stands 266 feet high/26 stories tall. The 24-karat gold-dust filled, glass-paneled ball is 75 feet in diameter. Each pane of glass is made with 24-karat gold, giving the Sphere its reflective gold color. Each pane cost around $1,000 at the time of construction.

Your home should be rejuvenating and as stress free as possible! With our turn key interior design services, let us do the heavy lifting while you focus on what matters to you. Happy Holidays! - Sandy Kozar

A Prescription for Transparency

4B • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, December, 2019

By Ellen Phillips, PharmD & Founder of believeRx

S

o many times in my career I have had patients asking me why their copay was what it was. I wanted to share a few things that I know about behind-thescenes of retail pharmacy, as well as what you can do about it when you are charged an unexpected price. First, I recommend that a patient shop around until they find a pharmacist they can trust and stay there due to the dangers of duplicate therapies and drug interactions. If something costs a little more than you expected, talk with your pharmacist and make an appointment to sit down and talk about your situation. If you have government funded insurance, you are not eligible for most advertised drug discount cards that allow patients to pay a certain amount for their prescription if they use the drug card put out by the manufacturer. Most discount cards put out by manufacturers always have a limit on what they will pay. A card may advertise that the copay will be a certain amount, but it depends on the commercial insurance plan’s copay. In other words, if a patient has not met their deductible, they may end up paying the difference between the maximum amount the discount card pays and what the insurance company pays. If a patient is a cash patient, they are sometimes not eligible for a drug discount card because eligibility criteria for the majority of manufacturer cards is that the patient must have commercial insurance. As far as free discount cards that you can print off the Internet, sometimes the price listed under each pharmacy is not correct. Free discount card companies do not set pharmacy prices. The price you pay is based on how much the pharmacy paid for the drug, and it can vary from each distributor. Most pharmacies do not match prices from wholesale businesses like Sam’s or Costco. Most of the time the price they advertise is part of being in a yearly subscription to their clubs. As far as being an independent pharmacist, we actually look for the cheapest prices as long as we can receive quality medications. We are not big corporations, and we

Now Open! choose to be where we are so we can honor our patients the way they deserve. Communication is key. You can call around and check prices all day long with the big chains, and you may even find a pharmacy that gives you the price that you are looking for. However, it is so important to sit down with the pharmacist you have and go over your medications and out-of-pocket cost. If not, you put yourself in possible danger by having your medications at more than one place. The software we have can only pick up what it knows. If you are a cash patient, it only picks up what we have filled. We are your advocate! We can tell you if there is an equiv-

alent that might save you money, and we can help point you in the right direction. We might even discover a medication that you do not even need anymore. We can find discount cards for you and can connect you with help if necessary. We are in this for you, and it is my pleasure to save you money and help you remain or get healthy. That is what I am here for. Call or come by for a consultation. believeRX 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865-214-6672 www.mybelieveRX.com

Heartwarming Christmas Show Comes to Life at Dolly Parton’s Stampede This Holiday Season

T

he “high-spirited adventure” of Dolly Parton’s Stampede Dinner Attraction receives a festive twist for the holiday season with the magnificent sights and sounds of Christmas, including a full-scale living Nativity, holiday decorations, Santa Claus, and a fabulous four-course yuletide feast. The Christmas show at “The Most Fun Place to Eat in the Smokies” runs through January 4, 2020. “Christmas is a very special time of year at Dolly Parton’s Stampede,” said David Swangel, General Manager of the Stampede in Pigeon Forge. “While our thrilling show provides fun for our guests, we also take time to celebrate the true meaning of the season thanks to a full-scale, living Nativity that will transport guests back to that first Christmas so long ago. It’s special to our entire cast and staff when families take the time to share with us that this show has become a treasured part of their annual holiday traditions.” Guests will be awed by the birth of Jesus re-enacted with Mary, Joseph, the wise men, and a living Nativity of camels, donkeys, and sheep. This touching scene is a reminder of the importance of the Christmas season. Families also will thrill at “Toys Come to Life,” an amazing musical fantasy starring The Sugar Plum Fairy and a number of toys she magically brings to life in a musical celebration, which includes a stunning aerial display

formed into a winter wonderland of glistening, freshly fallen snow, Old Saint Nick arrives by sleigh to complete the festivities. The entire Christmas experience is enhanced by the state-of-the-art, LED wall backdrop to the show’s 35,000-square-foot arena, which seamlessly complements the exciting action with stunning holiday scenery. Guests will feel as if they instantly have been transported deep in to the natural beauty of Christmas from the foothills surrounding the Great Smoky Mountains and to the clear skies above Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth. Christmas dinner, the other star of the show, includes Stampede’s signature fourcourse holiday feast consisting of Stampede’s original creamy vegetable soup, homemade buttery biscuit, a whole rotisserie chicken, hickory-smoked barbequed pork loin, corn on the cob, herb-basted potato, Stampede’s own specialty holiday dessert, and unlimited beverages. America’s Best Christmas Event Returns During Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas

Photos courtesy of The Dollywood Company

C

hristmas comes early in the Smokies thanks to the festival voted the Best Theme Park Christmas Event in America for 12 consecutive years, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana (now through January 4, 2020). During the festival, the park boasts an impressive count of more than five million brilliant lights, heartwarming Christmas entertainment, delicious holiday meals, and the fun of Dollywood at Christmas. Glacier Ridge presented by Goo Goo Cluster® opened last season, providing guests a completely new way to experience the Smokies at Christmas. Thanks to the opening of Wildwood Grove earlier this year, there is even more to explore in this dazzling area. Glacier Ridge offers a number of activities, displays, and dining options to enjoy for guests while they wander through this immense winter wonderland, which includes the areas of the park known as Timber Canyon, Wildwood Grove, Wilderness Pass,

and the upper portion of Craftsman’s Valley. “There’s nothing like Christmas in the Smokies,” said Dolly Parton. “I’ve been a lot of places and seen a lot of things, but the feeling of being home with the people I love at Christmas really is one of the most special things in the world to me. It’s my hope that the people who come experience my Dollywood at Christmas make those same sweet memories they’ll be able to share forever. I also hope we’re able to help them start some brand new Christmas traditions right here!” Guests visiting Glacier Ridge may feel as if the Smokies have frozen over, and they’ve been transported to the arctic. The Plaza at Wilderness Pass transforms into a winter wonderland, complete with a 50-foot tall animated tree which anchors the area. Every 30 minutes the Plaza sparkles to life, presenting a fully-synchronized, dazzling light show complete with holiday hits that leave guests singing along.

For those entering from Timber Canyon, the Arctic Passage, a 130-foot long programmable light tunnel transports them into Glacier Ridge in a stunning array of light and color. Once emerging from the tunnel, guests are greeted by polar bears who have made a home at Drop Line Bay. Those coming to Glacier Ridge through Craftsman’s Valley experience a one-of-a-kind light installation that mimics the natural phenomenon known as the aurora borealis. Guests can walk through Dollywood’s version of the Northern Lights, brought to life with music as only Dolly can do to help guests feel as if the aurora borealis has come south, even if for just a few weeks. From the cheer and joy of Dollywood’s Parade of Many Colors to traditional holiday shows like It’s a Wonderful Life and Christmas in the Smokies, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas fosters family memory making for guests. For those who wander through the spectacular scenery, it is easy to understand why it has become a family tradition for so many. Guests can experience the fun enchantment of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and friends straight from the children’s holiday classic or sit down together for a fabulous Christmas feast at many of Dollywood’s award-winning dining locations. Most of Dollywood’s signature rides and attractions also operate in this merry environment, with rides racing along just above the millions of twinkling lights. Amusement Today contributors and voters bestowed the Best Theme Park Christmas Event award on Dollywood in 2008 when the honor was first created. Dollywood is the 12-time – and only – winner of the award. A season pass purchased during Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas provides unlimited admission to this year’s Christmas festival along with unlimited admission for Dollywood’s entire 2020 season. Guests should purchase their 2020 season pass online now or upgrade their paid one-day admission ticket on the day of their visit. Ticket purchasers receive credit for the value of a regular one-day ticket toward the purchase of a 2020 season pass. Dollywood celebrates its 35th anniversary season next year with the new Flower & Food Festival, the return of the Gazillion Bubbles Show, and a calendar full of fantastic festivals and entertainment. ugar and Spice are both girls were picked up as strays in Sweetwater and have not been claimed by anyone. Since they are almost identical, we are assuming they are sisters who are about 10 months old. Each has a sweet puppy personality and would need a place to run and play. They love to play together but can be separated. Given that they are still puppies, some training would be needed, but we feel either or both girls would fit nicely into a home with children. Boomhauer came to the shelter as a stray from Tellico Plains. Boomhauer was picked up as a lanky hungry boy who was eating out of trash bins. He is about two years old, weighs 32 pounds, and has a beautiful red/mahogany coat. Boomhauer is being treated for heartworms and is reacting very well to the medication. He is friendly and gets along with other dogs. Although he does love to walk on a leash, he could use a firm hand to teach him some manners. If you would like Boom to be part of your family, please stop by to meet him.

or would be a great addition to any home where any other cats are already altered. She can live a very long, happy, healthy life in the right home. She must be an INDOOR ONLY cat. FIV positive cats can live with negative cats as long all are fixed and not aggressive. Lyla is spayed, wormed, vaccinated, and microchipped… her bag is packed and she’s waiting for you! She is a silver-gray DSH and is about 16 months old. FIV facts from Bestfriends.org: The most common route of infection is a deep bite wound from an FIV-positive cat to another cat. It can also be transmitted via blood, in utero, and from the milk of an infected mother cat. It is very rare for cats to get FIV just from being around infected cats, sharing food bowls, or from a person touching an FIV-positive cat and then touching an FIV-negative cat. Many FIV-positive cats and FIV-negative cats live together in the same home for years without spreading the virus to the non-infected cats. There are no specific signs of FIV infection. FIV-positive cats have a weaker immune system, so they are more prone to getting infections, such as upper respiratory in-

fections, ringworm, and dental disease. Other than that, FIV-positive cats tend to live normal lives in a stress-free environment and have a normal length of life. FIV cannot be transmitted to humans or dogs. Can FIV-negative and FIV-positive cats live together? Yes, as long as the cats get along and do not fight. The risk of an FIV-positive cat spreading the virus to an FIV-negative cat can be minimized by putting the new cat in a separate room until you are confident that they will not fight with each other using the slow-introduction process. Can FIV-positive cats have a good and long life? Yes, FIV-positive cats can live normal lives, both in quality and duration. They just need to be INDOOR ONLY cats, monitored for infections and dental issues. But if they’re well cared for, they can be healthy, happy, wonderful pets. Feed a good, healthy diet (not raw due to immunity issues with uncooked meat and eggs), an immunity boosting supplement, and check-ups twice per year at the vet. These foster homes help older and/or sick pets that need more assistance than the usual homeless pet. They often cannot be treated until they have a foster home commitment where they can safely stay until their recovery needs are met. Veterinary care and expenses are provided for their treatments and they are closely monitored. SCP also helps pets who have had to be given up by their owners. Give the Gift of Unlimited Out-of-Door and Fun-Filled Family Activities this Christmas

W

hile most family events have moved indoors for the winter, why not surprise your family this holiday season with a special gift that will ensure unlimited, fun-filled, out-of-door events next season? Winter is the perfect time to install the totally unique underdeck ceiling under your home’s existing raised decks. This will ensure that next season’s events will be protected from unexpected and unwanted rain and the searing summertime sun. “This is the perfect time to weatherproof all of your out-of-door events,” said Jim Conn, owner of Undercover Systems. “Throughout the entire process, our skilled craftsmen work with you, each step of the way, until your project is complete. Because your project will be completed this winter, you can enjoy your new outdoor living spaces at the first sign of spring.” Undercover’s patented system also helps extend your outdoor season of family enjoyment by protecting you from early spring showers, July and August’s relentless sun, and autumn rains. You’ll appreciate Undercover Systems’ attention to detail, which comes from years of experience, as they help you craft a seamless transition from your home’s interior to your new out-of-door living spaces, which will perfectly complement your existing architecture and landscaping plans. You’ll also appreciate the fact that every installation is customized to meet your exact needs using Undercover Systems’ proprietary underdeck ceiling components and not the “big box” store, one-size-fits-all generic products used by the competition. A complaint-free member of the Better Business Bureau, Undercover Systems offers homeowners the peace of mind that they deserve in a building contractor. Why not surprise your family this holiday season with the gift of unlimited and memorable out-of-door activities for next year? Call Jim Conn at 423-267-0091 today and let the party begin.

id you enjoy the four days of fall that we had before Mother Nature decided she was going to jump straight to winter? Wow! I am not a fan of temperatures below freezing, so I have not been a happy camper lately. Yes, some of your plants are going to have some damage, but there is nothing you can do right now, so just chill and give them time to heal what they can. You can prune out damage in a few weeks. This is the time of year when I tell you how to take care of some of those plants that we see during the holidays. Let’s get started. Amaryllis

An Amaryllis is usually purchased as a bulb or as a blooming plant. If it is a bulb, simply plant it into a good potting soil. I usually leave 1/3 of the bulb above the soil, but it can be planted up to the neck in a nice, heavy pot that leaves about 1” of space on the sides. After planting, place it in a warm spot where it gets direct sunlight. Water sparingly until the stem appears, and then slowly increase the amount of water to once a week or so. After the flowers emerge, turn the plant frequently to keep it from leaning. Staking may be necessary. After flowering has ended, cut the flowers from the stem. Once the stem turns brown and starts to sag, remove it also. Continue to water and occasionally fertilize to keep the leaves that have emerged happy, and treat it as a houseplant. They also like to spend summers outside in an area that gets some afternoon shade. Note: There are a few amaryllis that are hardy in our area, but the ones that are available now generally are not. If you want it to re-bloom next year, give us a call for directions or stop by for a handout. Christmas Cactus This is the easiest holiday plant to keep alive, and it can live for decades if you keep a couple of things in mind: 1. It is a tropical cactus, not a desert cactus. It does not like hot afternoon sun, and it does not like to get bone dry. It does like lots of light and won’t bloom well if kept in too dark a spot. 2. Re-blooming is triggered by cool temperatures and longer periods of darkness. If it is inside, keep it away from heat sources and give it 13 hours of darkness per day. Once the blooms have finished, let it rest for a bit by withholding water for 5-6 weeks. When you see new growth, it is time to resume regular watering. Be careful not to overwater, however. Make sure your pot has good drainage, and only water it every couple of weeks during the winter. As with the Amaryllis, call or stop by if you want to learn how to get it to re-bloom. Cut Christmas Trees and Greenery The most important rule for greenery is to buy from a reputable source. If you don’t cut the tree yourself, ask when and where it was cut. Some of the trees that go to box stores, warehouse stores, and grocery stores were cut in October for the sake of logistics. After you pick your tree, either have the seller do a fresh cut or do it yourself when you get home. Immediately put the tree in water and do NOT let it dry out. If it does, the sap seals the cut and it is no longer able to take the water up. Fresh trees can drink up to a gallon the first day, so get a good-sized stand and keep it full. Some people will recommend various additives to help your tree stay fresh longer, but most experts say that water is fine on its own. Keep your tree away from heat sources as much as possible. As for wreaths and garland, they will do best if they are sprayed with an anti-transpirant or misted with water regularly. They are also happiest if they get some shade from hot afternoon sun.

Poinsettia The poor Poinsettia has the misfortune of being a tropical plant that is featured during winter. If you want to keep it alive, follow these guidelines: 1. Always buy from a greenhouse or garden center. The box stores and groceries simply do not have the experience to handle a Poinsettia. 2. Don’t purchase a plant that is already in a plastic sleeve. This camouflages damage and creates a fungal breeding ground around the plant. The plant SHOULD be placed in a sleeve for transportation, however. Remove the sleeve when you get home by cutting it off or pulling it from the bottom. Never try to pull it over the top. 3. Don’t expose the Poinsettia to cold temperatures. Anything below 50 will damage it. Freezing temperatures will kill it is less than a minute. Keep it away from drafts or windows and doors. 4. The bracts are very fragile because of the size of the blooms. This means they should be put where they will not be bumped or brushed against. 5. The Poinsettia is not poisonous, but some people (and animals) may have a reaction to the sap. Keep it away from pets and children. 6. Water the plant when the soil feels dry. I find it easiest to take mine out of the wrap and put it in the sink to water it. After it drains, I put it back in the wrap. Don’t let water stand in the wrap because the Poinsettia is prone to root rot. Don’t forget to keep bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full, and stop in and see us during the winter for any garden needs! From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Learning About Random Acts of Flowers

O

ne of our favorite questions to ask is, “How did you hear about Random Acts of Flowers?” For many, it was through a television, magazine, or newspaper story. For some, it was from our website (www.RAFKnoxville.org), and for others, it was through word of mouth. But the most touching and impactful is when people first learn about us by having been personal recipients of a Random Acts of Flowers arrangement. Many times we hear that our visit was a wonderful, uplifting moment for the recipient during their hospital

stay, or we hear from a family member that the time a Random Acts of Flowers volunteer spent with a loved one in an assisted living facility gave an emotional boost to the whole family. Sometimes there is an element of magic that comes along with the stories of recipients who received an arrangement that included a favorite flower or favorite color. During one delivery, a volunteer heard a man’s voice in a room she was delivering to and thought he might be a veteran. She picked out an arrangement that had red, white, and blue flowers and a small American

Flag in the arrangement, and she walked into the hospital room and asked the gentleman if he was a veteran – and he said yes! Somehow our flowers have a knack for finding their way in the hands of just the right recipient, and these moments of kindness are not soon forgotten! If you have a story to share, or you want to make an impact with Random Acts of Flowers by volunteering or making a donation, please call us at 865-633-9082, email us at info@RAFKnoxville.org, or visit our website at www.RAFKnoxville.org.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Indoor Citrus

O

By Margeaux Emery, Senior Editor/Writer, UTIA Marketing and Communications

ranges, lemons, and limes are members of the genus Citrus, which is part of the rue family. The fruit is native to southern Asia, Malaysia, and Australia. Humans began moving citrus from these regions during some of the earliest migrations of ancient times. The fruits’ history, in fact, is every bit as colorful as its skin. Romans cultivated citrus trees across their territory. Traders on the Silk Road bartered in them, and Spanish conquistadores brought them to Florida. George Washington grew them at Mount Vernon. You can enjoy a citrus tree of your own in just the way our first president did by growing the plant in a container. Bring the pot indoors well before the first frost and return the plant to the outdoors in spring after the weather is reliably above 50 degrees. Whether you choose an orange, lemon, or lime tree, citrus offer the excitement of watching tiny fruit grow and mature. Plus, citrus blossoms offer a heavenly fragrance. The following varieties do well as indoor citrus grown in pots. Look for them at area plant nurseries and garden centers: » Improved ‘Meyer’ lemon (Citrus x meyeri ‘Improved’) is a luscious lemon-orange hybrid with a very thin skin and sweeter pulp than other types of lemons. The plant has dark, shiny leaves. » Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa or Citrus madurensis) is grown largely as an ornamental because its small, round, orange fruit are sour. ‘Peters’ is an eye-catching variegated form. » ‘Trovita’ orange (Citrus sinensis) grows medium-small, flavorful fruit that ripens quickly. The plant often is alternate bearing. » Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix) is an exotic citrus prized for its fragrant leaves that are used in Thai and other Southeast Asian cooking. It does produce a small, bumpy green fruit. Kaffir trees have striking foliage where one leaf appears to grow from another.

The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www.ag.tennessee.edu/utg.

Care Citrus need quick-draining, somewhat acidic soil. Cactus mix works well. Use a well-draining, deep pot to help stabilize the tree, and size pots up as the plant grows. Keep soil moist but not sodden. When the tree is indoors, less water will be needed because growth slows. Adding humidity to the dry indoor air, though, is important. Mist regularly and consider using humidity trays or a small humidifier. Citrus trees need 8 to 12 hours of sun a day. Choose a spot outdoors that’s out of strong winds. A site near a heat source, such as a brick wall, is beneficial. Indoors, place the tree in a sunroom or the sunniest window you have, keeping it out of drafts. Use of grow lights will extend short winter days, and the added light is important for fruit production. Expect some leaf and fruit drop to occur as the plant adjusts to being indoors. Once back outside, though, the tree will rebound quickly. Acclimate the tree across a week or more each time you move it indoors and out. In fall, first move the tree from sun to dappled light, then to shade. Reverse the process in spring. Citrus are heavy feeders. Specialized citrus/avocado fertilizers can be found, yet any all-purpose fertilizer with at least a 2-1-1 ratio can be used, as can fertilizers sold for acid-loving plants. Choose a granular, slow release formulation, although diluted soluble fertilizers can be applied when the plant is actively growing. While citrus are generally healthy, they do attract a few pests. Spider mites often appear in late winter. Spray them with a water solution to which a squirt of dishwashing soap has been added. Heavier infestations may require horticultural soap or oil. Once the tree is outdoors, keep watch for scale. Ants can aggravate scale infestations. Lower that risk by use of ant traps or by applying a 3- to 4-inch band of sticky insect barrier such as Tanglefoot® around the trunk near the tree’s base. The occasional aphid or two can be brushed away by hand.

A Christmas Perspective By Christina Fitzwilliam, Co-owner of Surface Doc

n 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Thyroid Cancer. After a botched surgery, I was left without a voice for seven long months. I wish I could tell you I kept a great attitude, but the truth is I was desperate and depressed. In January 2013, some friends prayed over me that my voice would be restored, and that very day I received an answer. I went from a barely audible whisper to about 75% of my speaking voice. I can now talk to my family and friends and even on the phone. If I had simply woken from the surgery with a less than stellar voice, I would have been focused on the loss. But having come from nothing to 75% was an amazing gift. It gave me a new perspective, and for that I am grateful. When we began the Surface Doc company in 2008, the economy was in a recession. Those first few months we nearly starved as we waited for the phone to ring. We had friends who brought us meals, and one of our first clients was a pizzeria who paid our company with pizza credit. I am not exaggerating to tell you that we ate pizza for a solid week – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The kids loved that week, but I couldn’t eat pizza for years after that. I’ll admit, I did do a bit of whining before my perspective was

forced to shift to gratitude. We ended up coming through that season feeling loved and cared for by family and friends… and we know God sent us that pizza! Christmas is a season where we are particularly mindful of our blessings. As I reminisce over the last decade or so, it is obvious that the seasons of real personal growth (and faith!) have taken place during particularly difficult experiences. I am reminded that the Lord CAN change any situation we find ourselves in. But, when the situation doesn’t change to our liking, we have an opportunity for growth and to realign our perspective with His. Our desire this season is to do a better job recognizing the Lord’s movement here in the middle – before the promise is fulfilled, before the promotion comes through, before the kids are on the path we desire for them. The middle is a difficult place for most of us, but I want to encourage you… that wherever you may find yourself, God’s grace is sufficient to carry you. And me. It is our heartfelt prayer that each of us feels the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and His blessings that surround us. Merry Christmas from Surface Doc. Surface Doc

Things Evolve... How About Your Fashions?

O

By Karen Lantry, Owner of Serendipity Boutique

ver the course of a single generation, we have experienced an incredible evolution in just about everything – from how we communicate, to dramatic advancements in healthcare, and to fashion – and our perception of fashion differs significantly from that of our mothers. When I launched Serendipity Boutique in historic downtown Loudon, my goal was to encourage women to break free from the unwritten fashion rules that suggest we have to dress like our moms. I, for one, don’t wish to dress like my mother did. And guess what? None of us have to. We should dress according to our body style and NOT our age. Have fun with fashion while looking great at the same time. I have spent many years helping women look younger with the right fashions. Women come to me all the time and say “I can’t wear this or that.” Really? You can oftentimes wear many of today’s trendy fashions if the item is the right cut for your body type. At Serendipity Boutique, we specialize in carrying today’s latest fashion styles and trends that can defy ages. We can help you make ONEX a splash in a fashionable ontrend leather jacket at 60 and look fabulous! Do you have MARY FRANCES an event coming up where you would like to make an CLARA SUNWOO entrance? Let us help you create that new look you have been searching for. We can even help you conceal those few extra pounds that you’re working on losing. Are you looking to find that perfect gift for someone on your holiday shopping list? Serendipity Boutique has all kinds of wonderful FRANK LYMAN things for your holiday needs that make great gifts, including gift certificates, which make great stocking stuffers. I would like to invite you to experience an entire new world of women’s fashions that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. In our new upscale boutique, you will discover many exciting new lines from top designers from around the world that will help you to re-imagine fashion. Located in historic downtown Loudon, you are just a few short minutes from 322 Grove Street, Loudon, TN 37774 Holiday Hours: a fabulous new you.
