Skillfully Using Today’s Technology to Find Your Next Home

T

oday’s Real Estate market is moving at light speed. Numerous buyers are home shopping at a distance and are unable to physically view homes they are interested in before they are sold. More than ever, the skilled use of today’s technology provides the solution for many of these buyers.

Allen Realty is one such firm that utilizes professional-grade photographs and listing videos to assist buyers and sellers in making the quick and informed decisions that are often required today to create a win-win sale. The powerhouse driving Allen Realty is Sam Allen. He and his wife, Randi, both love East Tennessee. They are young, enthusiastic, and driven. They also love the real estate business. In a way, Sam even has real estate in his blood. Both of his parents sold and built real estate, and he enjoyed the process from his childhood. It is not a surprise that he ended up running his own successful real estate company. Sam and Randi created and designed

Allen Realty to go the extra mile to create a personalized, intimate experience for their clients in their home sale or purchasing endeavors. Allen Realty uses an approach to real estate that combines sales and marketing savvy with today’s leading-edge technology. Sam’s video narrations convey not only the details of the house, but also the emotional reasons that would lead a buyer to see the value in this property as their future “home”. He goes the extra mile to show potential buyers how it might feel for them and their family to actually live there. And even though today’s technology is pivotal to the success of Allen Realty, equally important is Sam’s ability to truly listen and learn about his clients. In this issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are happy to introduce you to this energetic and focused couple, Sam and Randi Allen. MV: Tell us a little bit about yourselves. Randi: We both grew up in a small suburban town in southern California called Murrieta. Sam grew up with his mom and dad and two sisters. He was the captain of our high school football team and went on to pursue an engineering degree after graduation at California State University Maritime Academy. Sam: Randi grew up with her mom and dad and three siblings. She played

E AT fW o tesy Cour

competitive soccer, and later pursued her degree in Child and Adolescent Development at Point Loma Nazarene University. We started dating our junior year of high school and remained together throughout college. Sam: I relocated to East Tennessee a few years later where I married my high school sweetheart, Randi, and have been selling real estate ever since! We currently live in Rarity Bay on Tellico Lake with our dog Mr. Benny. I can truly say I love

what I do! Real estate is something that I’ve enjoyed since I was a kid. Both of my parents sold and built real estate. MV: Tell us about your decision to leave California and why you chose East Tennessee. Sam: In 2017, we made our move to Nashville where Sam worked as an engineer at Omni Hotel, and Randi pursued her BSN in nursing at Marian University. Continued on page 2A ...

Allen Realty cover article continued ...

Sam’s parents had been looking to retire and move near a lake in Tennessee, and Randi’s sister lived in Nashville. We both decided that moving to Tennessee would be a great option for us as we both absolutely loved visiting, and a large amount of our family were relocating to Tennessee as well. Randi: Also, we chose to make East Tennessee our forever home because of the undeniable beauty and countless activities it has to offer. We both felt that this was truly an amazing place to one day raise a family, while also providing uniquely beautiful communities for our parents to retire. MV: Sounds like you’re both quite committed not only to each other, but to real estate as well! Sam: Randi is as fully committed to our real estate venture as I am. We left 2 otherwise successful careers to pursue new careers in the real estate marketplace, and we are as committed to supporting each other as we are committed to every single client. We wouldn’t be making a major investment in a state-of-the-art real estate facility in Vonore if we weren’t committed! MV: Tell us more about your transition

from engineering, and Randi’s decision to leave nursing to join you at Allen Realty. Randi: After a few months of working at Omni hotel, Sam decided that engineering was not for him, and pursued real estate as a full-time career. Sam had been around the real estate world for as long as he could remember, as his grandmother was a broker, his mother was a real estate agent, and his father built homes. He took an interest in real estate at an early age, and always knew he would somehow incorporate it into his life. Sam moved to Vonore from Nashville, and I soon followed when we got married in 2018. After three years of working as a realtor, Sam expanded his business further by getting his broker’s license. Sam: Randi started working as a nurse at UT Medical Center after she moved to Vonore but decided to quit in 2020 after we made the decision to open our own real estate office. Randi is now completing her real estate license. MV: How does Allen Realty differentiate itself from other realtors in the area? Sam: We are a boutique real estate firm, which differentiates us from majority of other firms in the area. We are meticulous

and go the extra mile to create a personalized, intimate experience from start to finish when assisting clients with their home search. We created our office space for clients to feel at home and want everyone to see and feel the pride we take in our business as well as the sincere gratitude we have for those who choose to work with Allen Realty. I believe our meticulous nature can be clearly visualized through the quality of work we provide when helping clients buy or sell homes. MV: How important are the quality photos you provide your clients compared to the cell phone images that others often rely upon? Sam: We use top notch photographers and videographers to perfectly capture the essence of every unique home. The personalized photos and videos that we use to advertise have very clearly set us apart from other firms in the area. MV: Describe your marketing philosophy. Sam: We place a big emphasis on online marketing because 90% of buyers nowadays search online. We spend the majority of our marketing dollars on online advertisement to get our listings in front of as many people as possible.

MV: Anything else you feel would be important to add? Maybe your secret weapon, Mr. Benny? Randi: Our passion and enthusiasm for this area is ultimately what led us to opening our own real estate office. We want as many people as possible to be aware of East Tennessee and assist those interested in finding a place to call home. Sam: We’re passionate about real estate, and I believe that can be seen in everything that we do. Selling real estate is more than just a career to us, it is our genuine calling in this life. We are absolutely thrilled to be opening our own office, and we hope to see many new faces walking through our doors! You may or may not be greeted by our joyful, enthusiastic office dog, Mr. Benny! Randi: And don’t forget! Be sure to check out our website and “take a tour” yourself! One of those amazing properties could be your next home! December Highlights From the Publisher

Y

et another year has passed; each seems to go by more quickly than the last, and in many ways, this last year was not what we expected. Many of us hoped that 2021 would put an end to the pandemic. While that did not come about completely, it is good to remember that Christmas, itself, is about hope - hope for the future. With that hope, we have begun to adapt, venture out, and move on with our lives. With all the uncertainty and stress in the world, it can be reassuring to reflect on what is truly important in our lives. Things like friends, family, and loved ones, not to mention living in beautiful East Tennessee. Reflecting on our amazing area, it is not just the beauty of the landscape that makes this such a wonderful place to live, but it’s the people and the care shown for one another. So, this holiday season, as we are busy with our everyday lives, take time to slow down and remember what’s important. You are important to us. We at East Tennessee’s Mountain Views have come to appreciate all of our readers and advertisers, many of whom have become great friends. We wish all of you and your families a blessed Christmas and a safe and prosperous New Year. We look forward to continuing to serve our community by highlighting all the best the Knoxville and surrounding areas have to offer while making new friends along the way. Enjoy the holiday season!

Enjoy a Superior Holiday Season with Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning By Kerry McDuffie – Owner – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

M

any of us have already begun planning for holiday events and family gatherings. And this year’s holiday season will likely be even more meaningful after nearly two years of social distancing and curtailed family activities. As a parent and grandfather, I know just how important this time of the year is but how stressful holiday preparation can be as well. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for the holidays and all types of family events for more than 30 years. So, why is it important to clean your home’s carpets and Oriental and area rugs before your guests arrive? Well, for starters, to enhance the appearance of every room in your home. Also, if children and grandchildren play on your rugs and carpeting, you’ll want these surfaces to be as clean and healthy as they can be.

There’s also a practical side. Well-maintained carpets and rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. You see, abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants are tracked into our homes and onto our carpeting and rugs from the bottoms of our shoes and our pet’s feet. Not only do these elements contaminate our carpets and rugs, making them look dull and dingy, but many of these contaminants are abrasive in nature and can permanently damage carpeting and rug fibers. Also, some of these tracked-in elements are snow and ice removal chemicals that can chemically bond to your home’s carpet and Oriental rug fibers, shortening their life expectancy. Our truck-mounted cleaning system uses today’s stateof-the-art technology to remove dirt and grime that other systems simply leave behind. Also, our Farragut based Oriental and area rug cleaning boutique uses an 11-step proprietary cleaning process that can safely clean most rugs that might just become a family heirloom. And with the recent addition of new state-of-the-art rug washing

technology your rugs will be cleaner than ever before. Also, for you dog lovers, if Fido has had an accident on one of your valued Oriental or area rugs, call us immediately. Pet urine alters a rug’s pH and can negatively impact your rug’s color stability, causing color bleeding. So, act quickly! Time is your biggest enemy. If you can use a little help preparing for the holidays this year – and who couldn’t – remember the company who has earned a superior reputation since 1985 for unmatched superior cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning. We are so thankful for all our friends like you who have entrusted us to take care of your cleaning needs for more than three decades. From our family to yours may your holiday season be a blessed time with family and friends. Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning 865-691-5686 www.superiorofknoxville.com info@superiorofknoxville.com

Are You Living a Just-In-Case Retirement?

I

By Yvonne Marsh, CFP®, CPA

’ve noticed a trend…as I work with retired clients who have saved diligently their entire lives and accumulated a significant nest egg, they aren’t living out the retirement dream lifestyle they imagined for themselves. They’re still in preservation mode, living a Just-in-Case retirement. As in, we shouldn’t buy that dream house or dream car or dream vacation Just-In-Case we need that money. What if we get sick, my spouse gets sick, the markets take a dive, taxes go way up, or we live a really long time? They end up never spending their nest egg, so their kids inherit it and, you guessed it… the kids buy their own dream house and drive their own dream car and take their own dream vacation. An integral part of my job is to create financial plans that can withstand the unknowns in retirement – market corrections, bad health, higher taxes and living a long time. When these are identified and addressed, it becomes

much easier to relax and let the good times roll. Here’s a quick run-down on how we do it: • Market corrections: Let’s be honest, it’s not “if” the market corrects when you’re retired, it’s “when” and how many times. Crafting an Investment Bucket Strategy segmented into time horizons and need is a straightforward and effective strategy to combat inevitable market corrections. • Bad health: Make a plan to pay for health care costs Medicare doesn’t cover. Perhaps you think that you and your spouse will always be in perfectly good health and pass peacefully in your sleep with zero medical costs, which sounds lovely but may be wishful thinking. Look at asset-based long term care insurance plans that can leverage your dollar and create tax-free pools of money for home health care costs all the way through full skilled care. • Higher taxes: Taxes are on sale right now, and Roth IRA conversions should be on your agenda if you have significant pre-tax dollars. Roth IRAs are taxfree and insulated from future tax increases.

• Living a long time: Create a base layer of guaranteed income, using Social Security, pensions, and income annuities to literally create income you cannot outlive. The reassurance of a sound financial plan can give you the permission you need to live your dream retirement rather than leaving your hard-earned money for your kids to live theirs. Call or email and tell me what you’re dreaming about. We’ll make a plan, together. Easily Overcome Anxious Moments at the Dentist

H

aving first begun her search for a new family dentist online, Vicki Ailey found Heritage Family Dentistry. “They had all five-star reviews,” she said. “Heritage Family Dentistry is a wonderful practice. I have major ‘dental anxiety,’ and they always put me at ease. They treat you like family. Dr. Bradshaw and his team are very gentle and make sure you are comfortable throughout your entire procedure.” Vicki’s first procedure was a dental implant. Dental implants are fast becoming the preferred treatment option for patients with missing teeth. Most patients can’t tell the difference between dental implants and their natural teeth. And, more importantly, dental implants continue to promote healthy bone density in the jaw. In the absence of natural teeth or dental implants, bone density can deteriorate, often creating a sunken or premature aging appearance. “Dr. Bradshaw is also very informative,” said Vicki. “He takes the necessary time to explain everything in detail and always makes certain that you fully understand the recommended treatment plan and procedure. “Heritage Family Dentistry is the best dental office I have been to. I have moved often and have seen at least 10 dentists. I would absolutely recommend them to others. They are the best dentistry team I’ve ever experienced.” Patients at Heritage Family Dentistry can further relax with warm neck wraps and their choice of soothing music or nature television. A course of Halotherapy is recommended to achieve lasting results for airway cleansing, congestion relief, skin refreshment, and inflammation reduction - not to mention stress relief!

• Wide selection of natural supplements with expert recommendations • Immunizations and travel vaccines • Diet and wellness products

Ce d

Halotherapy comes from the Greek word Halos, meaning Salt. In this therapy, salt is fed through a halogenerator to heat, crush, and grind it into fine particles. Those particles are then dispersed using a dry spray aerosol to be inhaled by the nose and mouth - expelling pollutants and opening breathing passages - or absorbed topically to penetrate skin conditions. This therapy kills bacteria, reduces inflammation, and expands airways to benefit those struggling with: • Breathing issues from allergies, asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, sinus infections, cough, and sinusitis. • Skin conditions including dermatitis, psoriasis, acne, and eczema. • And chronic ailments like ear infections, cystic fibrosis, rhinitis, and ENT issues.

Believing it’s time to focus on patients, not just their prescribed medications, staff members even receive additional training to become Certified Health Coaches. Ellen and her team strive to provide a custom-tailored experience for each

customer/patient by treating them as a whole individual and not just their specific ailments or prescription medications. Their name says it all, “We Believe in You” and your goal for better health, well-being, and longevity. In addition, to believeRX, Ellen and her team of health-conscious professionals have created believeRXtra in the same location, offering fresh, healthy great tasting fresh juices, smoothies, and bowls, made with real ingredients and without any added sugar. They are sweetened with only natural sweeteners such as local honey or agave - and they taste fantastic! Medical grade protein, Blender Bombs, YourSuper, CBD Oil, MCT oil, collagen, and many other options to help promote weight loss round out the offerings to help equip you to maintain good health, and break sugar addiction! Choose from a wide variety of smoothie flavors such as: Chocolate Thunder, Mango Margarita, Strawberry Lemonade Smoothie, Acai Blueberries, Guava Berry, or Matcha Green Tea, just to name a few. If a fresh juice is more to your craving, try Anti-inflammatory Juice, Immune Booster, Summertime Mojito, Creamsicle, Tropical Carrot or one of the many other symptom fighting or just plain healthy, but always delicious, recipes. Smoothie bowls are a great option for those interested in more “crunch.” From Dragon Fruit Bowls or Chocolate Teddy Graham Bowls to Guava Protein Bowls or Acai Banana Berry Bowls, (or one of the numerous other choices) believeRXtra is sure to have a menu item you’ll love. When I was growing up, my dad owned a pharmacy in a small town in California. Like believeRX, he also featured personal, caring service and after-hours home delivery, when needed. He even had an ice cream and soda fountain. Also, like believeRX, it was very different from many assembly-line medical pharmacies

of today. My dad knew his customers and treated them as individuals and friends. Going into a large, chain pharmacy, I used to feel like I was treated like I was only a number. Lately, some of them are so bureaucratic and disorganized that I feel that it would be a step-up for them to treat me like a number! It is refreshing and encouraging to me that believeRX still believes in personal, caring, and holistic customer service. believeRX even has a modern/healthy version of the old-fashioned soda fountain: believeRXtra Fresh Juices and Smoothies!

To experience a friendly, caring pharmacy that you might have thought no longer existed in today’s big box, assembly-line pharmacy world, you are invited to visit believeRX or believeRXtra today! believeRX/believeRXtra 9627 Countryside Center Lane Knoxville, TN 37931 865.214.6672 www.believeRXtra.com Monday - Friday 9 am to 6 pm, Saturday 9 am to 2 pm

Advent = Practicing Patience

10A • East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, December, 2021

By Donna Navratil

e are fast approaching the end of another year and with that the season of “Advent” where churches and people all around the world anticipate and prepare for the Christmas holiday. The dictionary defines advent as a coming into place or arrival. During this time, Christians are awaiting the arrival of the baby Jesus. Maybe you are also waiting for other things to come into place at this time of year as well - a long awaited promotion, reconciliation from estrangement, a visit from a long-distance friend or family member, a new baby or grandbaby. Whatever it may be, it is

always hard to wait! Today we live in a world of instant gratification, and as we move into the Christmas season this seems to increase as we deal with a barrage of invitations. We seem to be called upon to eat more, do more, drink more and buy more. Do you find yourself dreading this time of year because of all the commitments and plans that take up so much of your time? That’s why “Advent” is the perfect time to practice patience. Patience through this chaotic season can provide us with the support we need to slow down. A little bit of patience can go a long way in helping us better enjoy Christmas and understand

the real reason for the season! We all know how excited children get with the approaching Christmas celebration. Oftentimes they say that they just can’t wait until Christmas. We as adults always remind them to be patient. Christmas will be here before you know it! Let’s practice what we preach and learn to tolerate delays, and the suffering of crowds. Let’s try not to get angry or upset with the many demands of the Christmas season. In so doing, you may just find yourself enjoying Christmas all the more! Shepherd of the Lake will be offering

midweek Advent services at 5:00 pm on December 1, December 8, and December 15 followed by a soup and bread supper in Friendship Hall for those who feel comfortable sharing a meal. You are welcome to join us for some quiet reflection amidst the holiday chaos! All are invited to our Christmas Eve Candlelight Service with Holy Communion at 4 PM on December 24. ina Smith, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Center in Madisonville, announced that beginning November first, 2021, the center will began selling a State of Tennessee approved lottery game. “Our goal is to begin the new year with funding that will continue to allow us to continue to provide free food, clothing, and other services to those in need in Monroe County.” The lottery is set to offer only 600 tickets priced at $50/ticket with awards set at 1st Prize $5,000, 2nd at $3000 and 3rd at $1500. The lottery will end February 25th with a computerized random number drawing. It will be the first time the center has used a lottery game to provide a funding resource for its client services. Margaret Cummings, President of the Board said: “Certainly Covid and economic conditions have increased demand, and we have to continue to seek additional sources of funding. All net funding will go to allow us to purchase food and pay for daily operations.” Tickets will be sold by members of the board and volunteers and at several locations throughout Monroe County or Monday-Thursday 9-noon at the Good Shepherd Center, 5150 Hwy 411 S, Madisonville, TN 37354. The Center’s phone number is 423-420-8888. What does Good Shepherd Provide? Our main expense is the overall operation of the Center. Good Shepherd serves approximately 1000 people and 30,000 pounds of food per month. In addition, we offer such things as: The Kid Friendly Food Program offering meals/snacks when school’s out The Christmas in July Program providing back-to-school clothing The ETHRA Transportation Program The Layette Program providing all kinds of items for newborns The Free Eyeglass Program The Winter Coat Program Winter assistance heating program “By asking for donations from everyone, we are hoping to build a sense of community,” said Tina Smith, Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Center. “The people of our area have always been outstanding in support of our mission, whether it’s been individually or through their places of work, civic clubs or their church organizations. While the demand is huge, we are always there to provide what we can to those in need.” The Center is also creating reserve funds for an addition to the existing building to increase the level of service to our clients. People can make a onetime donation or a pledge over time: monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually. Any level of donation would be appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible. The Center is a 501(c)3 organization. The current campaign will continue through October; however, funds are accepted year long. s the Holiday Season waxes and wanes, we always prepare ourselves for the end of the current year and the fresh start promised by the year to come. As The Village Salon ends its 33rd year and looks forward to its 34th, there is time for reflection. We remember our salon starting in a basement on Tuhdegwa Way in 1988. We remember signing our first lease in the Village Square in 1990 before the groundbreaking.

We remember our first 800 square foot store front that was quickly outgrown in 1992 and moving into our current location in 1995. We remember Teammates from the past; Diana, Bunny, Sandy, Heather, Cindy, Patty, Karen, Peggy, Christine, and Kim, just to name a few. We are thankful for our 20-year club members Andrea, Diana, Kay, Sandy, Tammy, and Amy. We are thankful for all of our Teammates that have Brian K. Whitehead worked through the diffiManaging Partner cult last couple of years: The Village Salon Barbara, Lee, Kathy, Holly, Chris, Andrew, Kathy, Lisa, Sue, Kim, and Sarah. We are also very thankful for our Guests, many of whom have been with us since the very start. Without your continued faithful support, the past two years may have proved to be a strain our salon could not bear. We are thankful for our founders and our inspiration, Faye and Bud Whitehead. Without their dreams, vision, and hard work, none of this would have become a reality. Hopefully, the end of 2021 finds all of you well, and may GOD Bless us all with a happy, safe, and healthy 2022.

A Perfect Gift...

he holiday season is in full swing as party invitations arrive

and plans with family and friends are finalized for this special time of year. Whether you’re shopping for the perfect gift or something special just for yourself, we are here to help you select all the perfect pieces!

If you are considering women’s apparel as a gift, remember how difficult and sometimes frustrating shopping can be. You’re sure you’ve chosen the perfect gift, only to discover that it’s not even the right size. How disappointing when you wanted to please her! This is where Santa’s helpers at The Lily Pad come in! We’ll ask questions relating to hair color, eye color, approximate height and weight, and lifestyle so we can assist you in selecting the perfect items. Unfortunately, there’s no universal sizing code in women’s apparel, so we may suggest a size 6 from one company and a size 10 from another, basing our suggestions on how each garment is fitting. Our sales associates are knowledgeable about each line, how they’re sized, the care involved in cleaning, fabric contents, and general information about all the lines we represent. If you aren’t comfortable selecting clothing, a Lily Pad gift certificate is a wonderful gift that every woman will appreciate! That way she can choose the pieces she really wants. And,

Fashion Sense

best of all, with each $100 gift certificate purchased before Christmas, you’ll be entered to win a $500 gift certificate! This drawing will take place on December 26th. During this holiday season more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those who have made our success possible. In this spirit we simply, but sincerely, thank you and our wishes for a joyous holiday season!

You Trim Your Tree – We’ll Trim Your Waist!

I

f your tree and your waist could benefit from some trimming this holiday season, we invite you to call your compassionate and caring medical professionals at Farragut Family Practice for your free consultation. While they won’t be able to help you with your tree, they can certainly help you to start trimming your waistline before the holidays. As is so often the case with today’s advances in medical technology, new technologies emerge that allow physicians to offer new treatments to their patients that were unavailable just a few short years ago. One such technology available today is truSculpting 3D, an innovative, non-surgical treatment that helps to contour your body regardless of your shape or fitness level. Available exclusively at Farragut Family Practice, Dr. Kevin Buchanan, MD and his team of caring and compassionate healthcare providers, offer patients a truSculpting 3D experience that can produce impressive results in as few as four 45-minute treatments and with no downtime, allowing patients to significantly eliminate fat in stubborn areas around their abdomen and flanks, where no amount of exercise and dieting succeeds. Perhaps the most remarkable outcome from the truSculpting 3D experience extends far beyond just your enhanced self-esteem and self-confidence. It also encourages many patients to focus on their overall well-being, including proper nutrition and exercise, which can lead to a more fulfilling life and greater longevity. Clinically proven to be safe and effective, truSculpting 3D permanently eliminates body fat in stubborn areas by up to 24% while also tightening the skin, producing quick results in most patients

– usually within 12 weeks. “After thoroughly evaluating a variety of non-surgical body sculpting and contouring systems,” said Dr. Buchanan, “we chose truSculpting 3D for a variety of reasons but, in particular, because of its ability to tighten and improve skin tone, as well as to eliminate stubborn fat cells, and truSculpting 3D is usually far less expensive for our patients. In addition, as with any treatment, patients often have some level of apprehension. Fortunately, our patients experience the peace of mind that comes from knowing that we have a medical provider on site.” “Patients share their excitement in fitting into clothing that they haven’t worn in years, especially their skinny jeans. We have had several women tell us that they now wear sleeveless shirts after receiving treatments on their arms, which both eliminated stubborn fat and tightened their skin. Many truSculpting 3D patients also have reported that in addition to the elimination of stubborn fat cells, they have observed a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.” To learn how you too can benefit from a truSculpting 3D experience before the holidays, you are encouraged to call Farragut Family Practice today at 865-675-1593, ext. 224 and ask for Ashley to set up your free consultation appointment. ith another busy tax season just weeks away, tax year 2021 promises to be another period of challenge for all of us as we attempt to navigate the barrage of new tax rules and regulations, numerous federal and state forms, and a variety of pandemic related tax issues. At Allen A. Scott, CPA, we are prepared to help you to successfully navigate these hurdles. We have been busy preparing for this upcoming tax season through our ongoing continuing education efforts, as well as making other important changes designed to streamline our process, making it more convenient for our clients. In doing so, we have listened carefully to your comments over the last year. Many of you have mentioned the increasing traffic congestion and parking issues you’ve experienced accessing our Lenoir City branch. Others have commented on the fact that I am only available on a part-time basis in Lenoir City, as I split my time between our two branches. To address your concerns, we recently made the decision to consolidate our two branches into a single, full-service location in Madisonville, TN that will feature all the resources you require to efficiently meet all your tax and other accounting needs. Our Lenoir City area clients who visit our new consolidated location will avoid the traffic congestion and occasional gridlock they have experienced in the past. In addition, the inconvenience having to search for an available parking space will be a thing of the past. For our Lenoir City clients that prefer the convenience of just dropping off their tax or other accounting related information, we will shortly be announcing the availability of a convenient drop-off location in Lenoir City. We trust that these changes will result in an even better experience when using our services in the future. Our entire team would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your many years of loyal support and to wish you and your family a blessed Christmas holiday season. Allen A. Home Organization Includes the Pantry

F

all has arrived, and we’ll be celebrating the holidays in a few weeks. If you have plans to entertain this holiday, you may need to whip your pantry into shape. “While newer houses often have a larger pantry space, the size of your pantry doesn’t matter as much as organization,” said Kathryn Norton, co-owner of Tailored Living of Knoxville. “A well-designed small pantry often provides better, more convenient and functional storage than a poorly designed larger pantry.” No matter its size, today’s pantry should be: » Convenient – Located at or near the area where food is prepared » Visible – Everything in the pantry can be seen at-a-glance. » Accessible – Every item can be easily reached and removed without having to move anything else out of the way. Heaviest items, like a mixer, close to the floor and least-used items at the highest point. When designing the layout of your pantry, Tailored Living believes what works best for the homeowner is a design that fits their lifestyle. Our designers will discuss with you how you want to utilize your pantry. Some of the questions our designer may ask are: » What will be in the pantry besides food? Do you want to store dishes, serve ware, table linens, grilling items, or cleaning supplies in the space? » Do you entertain a lot and need to store party supplies? » Do you have a specific design style in mind? » If you have the space, do you want a counter-top – often called a landing area -- to put bags of groceries on or, if there’s an outlet in the pantry, everyday items like a coffee maker? Other pantry elements to consider are drawers or pullout baskets. Incorporating baskets makes it easy for kids to see and get the food they like to eat or to store large-bulk items like onions or potatoes. Drawers are perfect for linens, grilling utensils, napkins, or any smaller items. Slide-out spice and wine racks add convenience. How much you’re able to customize depends on the size of your pantry. Whether your pantry provides a walk-in space or is a reach-in, Tailored Living of Knoxville listens to your individual or family needs to design a space that works well for your lifestyle. Their job is to design and install a well-organized pantry that brings order to chaos.

Sweetwater Flower Shop Introducing New Owner & Mom-trepreneur Casey Camp

Casey with Sutton, 2 years, and Kendrick, 5 months

A

ccording to the Small Business Administration an estimated twenty percent of all small businesses fail after their first year in business, and only half survive beyond the five-year mark. So, ask yourself: what is the likelihood that a small business could last a century or more? Are you ready for this? According to 2006 U.S. census data, only .00897% of businesses survive beyond one hundred years. So, what does that say about a business that actually achieves this historic milestone? Sweetwater Flower Shop in historic downtown Sweetwater, TN has earned a reputation for quality and exceptional customer service, not for one year or for five years, but for nearly one hundred years. As one of the oldest businesses in Monroe County, how has Sweetwater Flower Shop continued to thrive over the years? By expanding the number of products and services it offers its customers beyond just the fresh cut flowers and arrangements for which it is so well known since first opening its doors in the 1920’s. Over the years, it has also added boutique gifts, silk florals, women’s apparel and accessories, seasonal items and even a restaurant. And while well-known as a destination for shopping aficionados throughout East Tennessee and beyond, what is often best remembered by visitors is Sweetwater Flower Shop’s own brand of southern hospitality where customers become friends immediately upon entering the Shop. And as we all experience changes in our lives, Sweetwater Flower Shop is no exception. Just recently Sweetwater Flower Shop owner Jack Wilson passed on the torch after more than 4 decades of ownership to new owners, wife and husband team, Casey and Derek Camp. In this December 2021 issue of East Tennessee’s Mountain Views, we are excited to bring you this interview with local mom-trepreneur and new Sweetwater Flower Shop owner Casey Camp as she shares her vision for Sweetwater Flower Shop’s next one hundred years. ETMV: Tell our readers a little bit about yourself. Casey: Well, to start with, I’m a Sweetwater native. I believe I was born to be an entrepreneur. I secured my master’s degree from Tennessee Tech and later pursued a marketing career at a local regional hospital. This experience helped me

to further refine those requisite skills so important to those intent on entering the challenging world of self-employment. During this same period, I married the love of my life, Derek. We have been blessed with two beautiful children. ETMV: Tell us about how the Sweetwater Flower Shop opportunity presented itself. Casey: When we learned that Sweetwater Flower Shop owner, Jack Wilson, was planning on retiring, we immediately became excited about the opportunity to own and operate this nearly century old business that we were convinced offered so much upside potential. It was also an opportunity to maintain this extraordinary Sweetwater City and Monroe County institution that has become so much a part of our area’s history. ETMV: What are your plans for the future of the Sweetwater Flower Shop? Casey: In the months ahead, we look forward to expanding not only our fresh and silk flower business, but also our gift boutique for which the Sweetwater Flower Shop has become so well known. Also, look for us to expand our women’s apparel and accessories offerings, and of course the reopening of our signature restaurant, Upstairs at the Mansion. ETMV: The reopening of the Upstairs at the Mansion Restaurant is going to excite many of our readers. Can you share more with us? Casey: The new restaurant owners have a mid-January target date to open Upstairs at the Mansion. It will likely be a soft opening initially. I would further anticipate that they will expand their menu options and hours of operation over time. As with any new business, particularly a restaurant, there are the inevitable learning curves. The new owners hope to best meet your expectations by gradually introducing and expanding their offerings.

ETMV: What other changes can our readers look forward to at the all-new Sweetwater Flower Shop? Casey. The sky’s the limit. We have many exciting plans for the future. Some are our own, others, those of our loyal customers who have offered many valuable suggestions. The restaurant venue will likely be expanded to include fashion shows, special events and even entertainment in the future. ETMV: This all seems exciting, and we wish you the very best going forward. In closing, is there anything you wish to add? Casey: Well, let me start by offering our thanks to so many of you that have extended us your best wishes and words of encouragement for the future. You have our personal commitment that we will do everything possible to maintain and further the reputation of Sweetwater Flower Shop and it’s nearly 100-year-old tradition in historic downtown Sweetwater. I also want to let everyone know about the other services we will offer here such as interior and exterior design for the holidays, everyday décor, and custom graveside pieces. And if you need to help in transforming this holiday season into a spectacular and magical Christmas, I invite you to visit our two floors of holiday decorating and gift giving ideas. Please be sure to introduce yourself on your next visit. We thank you in advance for your past loyalty and ask your patience as we introduce these many exciting changes in the future intended to enhance your Sweetwater Flower Shop experience. Sweetwater Flower Shop 118 W. North Street, Sweetwater, TN 37874 423.337.6623 Open Mon – Fri. 9am to 5pm and Saturday 9am to 12pm

hen someone we truly care about begins to lose the skills and abilities they have always taken for granted, it can mark an often difficult period of transition for them as well as those around them. Hearing is one such ability that many of us will experience some loss of during our lifetimes. And while many hearing loss sufferers seek treatment, others ignore the problem altogether. In some instances, hearing loss occurs so gradually that it often goes unnoticed. Sufferers, often unknowingly, compensate by turning up the volume on the television, or they may ask others to speak a bit louder. They might also ask others, perhaps a good friend or spouse, to repeat what others have just said, thinking that the speaker was mumbling or that background noise was interfering with their ability to hear clearly. Still others have difficulty acknowledging that they are experiencing hearing related issues, believing that their hearing loss is a sign of aging. Refusing help can be the first stage of denial. But like so many other ailments in life, when left untreated, hearing loss can actually hasten the loss of other skills including loss of balance and cognitive function thereby accelerating the aging process. Most hearing loss occurs as we age, but so does the loss of the 20/20 vision we once enjoyed when we were younger. Fortunately, the loss of our once crystal-clear vision is easily overcome with corrective lenses. The same is true of hearing loss. Technological advances in today’s hearing instruments, can actually help you, a

friend, or a loved one to lead full and active lives. Ignoring your hearing loss can get you into trouble. I laugh when I remember the Seinfeld episode “The Low Talker” where Elaine and Jerry pretend to understand what Kramer’s date is saying and Jerry unknowingly agrees to wear a “puffy shirt” on a TV show. Many people refrain from addressing their hearing loss because they think they will look old. The new hearing aids we sell are not your Grandma’s hearing aids! People will not even notice that you’re wearing them. The Christmas holiday is nearly upon us. Many of us will scramble, last minute, to discover that perfect holiday gift. But if you, a friend or a loved one is experiencing the loss of hearing, I believe the greatest gift you can give them this holiday season is the gift of hearing, a gift the wearer will remember and enjoy every day for the rest of their lives. So, what’s that next step? Get yourself or your loved one in for a free hearing test and evaluation of your/their current hearing situation. Experience the compassionate caring that you will only find at Tellico Hearing Solutions. And remember that Robert is not only a Certified Hearing Instrument Specialist, but he is also a hearing instrument wearer. Call us today and make this Christmas one you’ll always remember by rediscovering the life’s gift of hearing. Combining Old-world Oriental Rug Craftsmanship with Today’s Rug Washing Technology

O

By Kerry McDuffie – Owner – Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning

riental rugs continue to grow in popularity among homeowners and business owners. Often referred to as art for our floors, Oriental rugs embrace centuries-old handcraftsmanship that remains literally unchanged. These rugs combine all-natural fiber, primarily wool, all-natural dyes, and are still hand-knotted on looms as they have been for many hundreds of years. Oriental rugs can last almost indefinitely when well cared for and have earned a reputation for being extremely durable. In fact, many Oriental rug owners pass on their treasured rugs as family heirlooms to be enjoyed by future generations. But these durable and long-lasting rugs also have a gentler side. Their all-natural fibers and dyes make proper, periodic care all the more important. Unlike their wall-to-wall cousins, Oriental rugs cannot be cleaned using traditional carpet cleaning methods, as they would likely be damaged in the process. Genuine Oriental rugs can only be thoroughly and safely cleaned by “washing” them – a process that can’t be properly performed by even the most ardent DIYer. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we have used our more than three decades of experience to create a proprietary 11-step rug washing process to safely clean even your most valuable Oriental rugs. You can watch our informative rug washing video online at www.superiorofknoxville.com. But our commitment to you doesn’t end there. We routinely attend training seminars offered by Oriental rug washing experts from across the nation to learn how to improve our craft. We also make significant financial investments in the latest, state-of-the-art equipment and technologies, which further enhance our already modern, state-of-the-art Oriental rug washing boutique located in Farragut. Recently, we have invested in the latest technological advancements in the Oriental rug washing marketplace, including the “Marinator Decon System,” which enables us to wash the most difficult area of any rug, the inner rug fibers. The Decon System is perfect for the removal of pet contamination. In addition, we have just installed the Centrum Force Rug Wash Floor which directs a gentle cascade of 100% pure, clean water down the sloped floor and over and through your rug to ensure that it is as bright and clean as possible. Other rug washers use an immersion pool to wash your rug. Comparing the Centrum to an immersion pool is like comparing your morning shower to a bath. Be sure also to ask about our large selection of rug cushions and the application of rug protectant, both of which are designed to prolong the life of your Oriental and area rugs Committed to protecting your precious heirlooms for generations to come, why not trust the family that thousands of other Knoxville area families have trusted since 1985: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning? new exhibit about the construction of TVA’s Norris Dam and the people that were forced to relocate from the region in which the dam was built. The centerpiece of this exhibit is a newly restored Arnwine Cabin. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Arnwine Cabin is a prime example of primitive Appalachian life before the construction of Norris Dam. The exhibit features historic photographs and an animated map of the region before-and-after the construction of Norris Dam, highlighting the locations of homes, farms, churches, and schools that now sit at the bottom of Norris Lake. hinese wild ginger is a shining example of a tough and versatile ginger. If you are tired of groundcovers so ordinary that you don’t even see them anymore, then you will appreciate the exquisite glossy marbling on each leaf of Chinese ginger. Asarum splendens is a spreading evergreen member of the pipevine family, Aristolochiaceae, and develops into a groundcover that spreads swiftly enough to achieve satisfying coverage but not so fast as to be rampantly difficult to control. With a height of just 6-8 inches, Chinese ginger provides a low but richly textured flooring under azaleas, aucuba or bigleaf hydrangeas. Its substantial cordate leaves offer bolder foliage than the typical evergreen groundcovers, well appreciated in the shade garden once the summer foliage of hostas have been erased by frost. Winter containers benefit from its mounding dark foliage to anchor sparkling golden or variegated sedges and saucy pansies. The deep green leaves are almost black yet offer shimmering glints of silver when struck by light. Don’t worry about putting Chinese ginger into all day sun during the cooler months. During summer, either move the container to a shady setting or add a tall plant to the combination that can offer shelter from the sun during the hottest parts of the day. In the landscape, remember that its very dark foliage can make it almost disappear in deep shade, so bring it forward where it can enjoy a few hours of late or early sunlight, or use in bright shade – or at least provide some contrast with lighter foliaged plants for backdrop. This plant does well in dry shade as long as soils are not terribly droughty and is happy in the company of autumn fern, heuchera and hellebore. It is deer resistant, and durably perennial in Zones 5 to 9. In the very coldest Tennessee winters or regions, it may lose some foliage to a severe drop in temperatures but will rebound in spring. Let’s face it, most evergreen perennials generally fall into two categories – the overused and predictable groundcovers or the sadly underutilized – when there are many that can play a variety of roles for year-round interest. ’d like to cover a bit on landscaping before I talk about holiday plants: ✻ Yes, you can still plant. Our soil seldom freezes, so trees and shrubs can continue to be planted. This gives them an advantage over plants installed in the spring. ✻ If you haven’t mulched lately, consider adding enough to give you about 3” to keep the soil temperature and moisture levels more stable. ✻ Evaluate your landscape after the leaves fall. Is it boring? Do you need to add plants for visual interest in the winter? ✻ Keep weeding! Now let’s talk about the care of seasonal plants: Christmas Cactus The Christmas cactus and its cousins are very low maintenance, but there are a few tricks to growing them: ✻ They are tropical cactus, not desert cactus. They don’t like hot afternoon sun or to get bone dry. They do like lots of light, however, and won’t bloom well if kept in too dark a spot. ✻ The bloom cycle is triggered by cool temperatures and longer periods of darkness. Keep them away from heat sources and give them 13 hours of darkness per day. ✻ Don’t overwater. Every couple of

weeks is fine for most homes. Once the blooms have finished, let them rest for a bit by withholding water for 4-5 weeks. When you see new growth, it’s time to resume regular watering. If the plant has been in the same pot for more than 3-4 years or if it’s very crowded, you’ll need to up-pot. Don’t worry if you accidentally break some pieces off, because they’re easy to propagate. Call us if you need instructions. Cut Christmas Trees and Greenery Please be aware that there’s a tree shortage. I suggest you don’t procrastinate in finding one! You might also end up with a tree that doesn’t quite meet all your wishes, but remember that all trees are beautiful once decorated. We will do a fresh cut on your tree, but you need to get it in water within 20-30 minutes or the cut will re-seal. If that happens, you should do another cut when you get it home. Use a tree stand that holds at least a gallon of water and keep it full. Once a tree dries out, the cut seals and it will no longer take up water. As for wreaths and garland, they will do best if they’re sprayed with an anti-transpirant or misted with water regularly. They are also happiest if they get some

his promises to be a much more interesting Christmas than last season as we learn that many of our most coveted holiday gifts might just be stuck for many months to come on ships anchored in U. S. ports, the result of supply-chain related issues. There are other important issues that we will need to confront in the months ahead as well that will involve decisions related to our personal finances, both immediate and long-term. Parents and grandparents alike revel in the holiday experience as families gather for traditional holiday meals, catching up on months past, and our all-time favorite: watching the children tear open their gifts in just minutes that took hours to wrap. Enjoying these holidays creates all new family memories that will last a lifetime. I still cherish my memories of Christmas, both as a child and now, as a father. But don’t ignore your year-end financial planning responsibilities that will secure your family’s future and your retirement dreams. Just like supply-chain challenges can disrupt your best laid holiday planning, a myriad of potential financial marketplace threats can derail even your best laid financial plans. Possible changes to the 2017

Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, new tax proposals, skyrocketing inflation, historically low interest rates, rising gas and food prices, and political uncertainty can have a significant impact on you and your family’s future. And if you think that riding it out on autopilot is a strategy, just think of the inherent risk of doing nothing. As a son, husband, and father, I encourage you to make this year the best and most memorable Christmas season ever. But I also encourage you to take a closer look at what’s under your tree this Christmas. Don’t fixate on the gifts that might not arrive on time, but rather offer your family the gift of security: a well thought out and carefully implemented financial plan that will secure your family’s Christmases for many years to come, not to mention your retirement dreams. Getting started is easy. Simply call me today, and together we can make these upcoming holidays a season you’ll long remember. guess we have all heard about the $10K - $20k that area homeowners have shelled out to repair the pinhole leaks in their homes copper plumbing. Clients I have worked with tell stories of massive floods, ripping out drywall, hid-

den mold growing behind walls, and the $10k - $20k re-plumbing jobs that have resulted. What many of us may not have heard about is that, in most cases, there is a safe and effective alternative to replacing your existing plumbing. Fortunately

for many a homeowner, we have helped them avoid turning their home into a job site by simply fixing the water that travels through their existing pipes. Chlorine is corrosive to copper. It reacts with the copper to create a chemical com-

pound: Copper chloride. This compound can slowly attack copper from the inside, which results in those tiny but destructive pinhole leaks. Also, hard water, which is an abundance of calcium/magnesium, can erode copper pipes if a hot water recirculation pump is installed. Kinetico water systems from Aqua Clear can safely remove the chlorine, chloramines, and hardness that can attack copper pipes from the inside. We also add a special coating filter, after the Kinetico system, to recoat the copper plumbing from the years of damage. After installing hundreds of Kinetico systems to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that this system works! We’ve been saving our valued clients from the expense of $10k - $20k re-plumbing jobs and also from turning their home into a job site. Not only did they save their plumbing, but they also get all the other benefits of installing a Kinetico whole house water filtration system. We are so confident in our turn-key pinhole leak prevention system, that we will refund your investment if it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Garage Floor Coatings – They’re Not Created Equal

D

o you cringe at the sight of your pitted and stained garage floor? Has it become unsafe with crumbling concrete, cracks or slick spots caused by years of leaked oil? The garage is the first part of your house you see when arriving home and is often the largest room in the house. So, to make the garage a safe extension of the home’s living space, homeowners are investing in concrete coatings for the garage. “There are options for garage flooring, but all are definitely not created equal,” explained Brian Falls, a co-owner of PremierGarage of Knoxville, the area’s most experienced garage flooring company. “The decision usually comes down to a choice between an epoxy or polyuera system. A polyurea flooring system, however, presents the most advanced and durable coating in concrete flooring technology. It’s truly quality you can stand on.” Additional benefits of using a polyuera system for your garage floor include: Surface that Withstands Practically Everything From extreme pressure, heavy impacts, and spills, polyuera is strong and durable. It provides better protection than epoxy against chemicals commonly found in garages, like gasoline, auto fluids and paint thinner. Its chemistry makes it more flexible and up to 20 times stronger than epoxy flooring. It is also UV resistant and

contains no harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Most importantly, unlike epoxy, it can withstand extremely high temperatures, making it resistant to hot tires lifting and peeling the coating. Makes Your Garage a Safer Place Used in combination with full coverage of polymer paint flakes adds safety to your space. The combination creates a slip-resistant surface, reducing the chances of accidents when the floor is wet. The coating is also antibacterial, stain-resistant, and nontoxic. Fast-Curing and Long-Lasting This kind of garage floor coating takes only a few hours to harden and one day to be ready for use. Standard epoxy coating systems take three to five days to harden completely. PremierGarage’s polyuera floor coating, which retains it color and finish integrity, has a 10-year warranty. Easy Maintenance Spills clean up easily with a paper towel, but an occasional cleaning with just water and a small amount of vinegar will keep the floor looking brand new. Bottom line, a polyurea garage floor is definitely worth the investment and increases the value of your home. Yes, a garage floor can be both beautiful and strong! Because of Amniotic Band Syndrome, Harmon was born without feet, with no right hand, and with only a palm, pinky and thumb on his left hand. He is an advocate for people with disabilities and a strong supporter of Spark. “I’m honored to be a part of Toy Tech this year because children with disabilities deserve toys they can operate,” Harmon says. “They should have toys that make them laugh, pretend, imagine, and belong.” The Crabtree family has a personal history with Toy Tech. Elliot, born with arthrogryposis, or AMC, uses an electric wheelchair. His range of motion is much greater now, but at birth, his mobility was severely limited. “Elliot is really excited to be helping Santa at Toy Tech,” says his mom, Angela Crabtree. “When we discovered Spark, Elliot had zero toys that he could play with on his own, and that was so discouraging to us.” But when he was about 9 months old, Elliot attended his first Spark Toy Tech, and he was delighted to receive a button-activated, specially modified Dancing Elmo. “Spark gave Elliot his first toy that he could manipulate by himself,” Angela says. “He was so excited. It was a milestone moment. And now, he’s distributing toys to others this year. We love that Spark gives independence to children and a chance for them to play.” Harmon says donning the Santa suit carries personal Design Décor offers concierge level, seasonal, and special event decorating for your home or business. It’s Not Too Late to Take Advantage of These 2021 Tax Saving Ideas A Still Waiting on Your 2020 Refund? s of September 8, 2021, the IRS had a backlog of 7.8 million individual income tax returns that require manual processing. Many needed further review because the amount of Economic Impact Payments (Stimulus) claimed as being received differed from the IRS records. This contributed to over 9 million returns identified with math errors prompting notices being sent to taxpayers. The good news is this is a great improvement over the 16.7 million unprocessed returns as of June 25. As of September 8 there were more than 2.8 million Forms 1040X (Amended Tax Returns) that were awaiting processing. Business returns were also backlogged with some 2.3 million unprocessed employment tax returns filed on Form 941. And good luck trying to call the IRS with a question or to check on the status of your refund. So far in 2021, only 9% of callers reached a live IRS customer service representative. Part of the problem is the historic number of phone calls. The IRS reports receiving over 200 million calls so far in 2021 The American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) introduced many new tax changes when it was enacted in March 2020. Many of those changes will affect the 2021 tax return filings. Economic Impact Payments ARPA enacted another round of economic impact payments that were sent to qualifying taxpayers in 2021. Just like the two 2020 rounds of stimulus payments, the payments were sent out in advance. The 2021 recovery rebate credits provided individuals with a $1,400 recovery rebate credit ($2,800 for married taxpayers filing a joint tax return) plus $1,400 for each dependent claimed on their 2021 income tax return. The credit is phased out for single taxpayers with adjusted gross income (AGI) over $75,000 and is completely phased out with AGI over $80,000. For married taxpayers who file married-filing- jointly, the phase out starts at $150,000 and the credit ends at $160,000. The payments started being sent to eligible taxpayers in April and will continue throughout year. While the payments are not considered taxable, you will have to declare them on your 2021 income tax return if you received the payment. For eligible taxpayers who do not receive the advance payment, they will receive it when they file their 2021 income tax return. So be sure to confirm that you received your payment. Child Tax Credit ARPA also expanded the Child Tax Credit and provided for advance payments. The credit is fully refundable for 2021 and 17 year-olds are eligible. The credit was increased to $3,000 per child ($3,600 for children under 6). The increase is phased out for taxpayers whose income is over $150,000 ($75,000 for single taxpayers). The credit phases out by $50 for each $1,000 of income over these thresholds.

Advance payments for 50% of the credit were sent to eligible taxpayers from July through December. You will need to reconcile the advance payments you receive in 2021 with the actual amount of credit you are entitled when you file your 2021 tax return. Employee Retention Credit ARPA extended the employee retention credit through the end of 2021. The employee retention credit was originally enacted in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) and allows eligible employers to claim a credit for paying qualified wages to employees. Year-End Gifts Now is a great time to consider gifts of appreciated property. A taxpayer can make gifts to any number of donees before the end of the year as long as each gift is no more than $15,000. Non-taxable gifts will not be included in the donor’s unified estate and gift tax exemption. Gifts to any one donee in excess of $15,000 will reduce the unified estate and gift tax exemption and may be worthy of consideration if Congress reduces the exemption. Married taxpayers can make joint gifts up to $30,000 for each donee. Gifts should be made prior to December 31 and checks dated in 2021, but not deposited or cashed until 2022 are considered gifts made in 2022, not 2021. For taxpayers who have to take the Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) and who wish to make a charitable donation to a qualified charity should consider a Qualified

Charitable Donation (QCD). You should direct your plan administrator to make the donation directly from your IRA and it will count as part of your RMD. Realize Stock Losses to Off-set Gains Taxpayers who own appreciated investments but have realized capital losses in 2021 should consider selling appreciated investments. Or if they have realized gains on stocks, should consider if they have losses that can be realized to off-set the capital gains. Amounts Paid for Home COVID-19 Tests are Medical Expenses The cost of personal protective equipment, such as mask, hand sanitizers, wipes and home COVUD-19 tests are considered medical expenses for taxpayer’s who itemize their medical expenses on Schedule A. Simplified Per Diems Set by IRS For 2022 the simplified per diems for lodging, meals and incidentals in high-cost locales, is $296 per day. The daily amount for all other areas is $202. For meals and incidentals only, the rates are $74 a day in high-cost locales and $64 elsewhere. The per diem for solely incidental expenses is $5. The use of these simplified amounts can reduce the amount of records and receipts required to be maintained. Understanding the complexity of the tax code and making sure you realize the full benefit of the tax laws can be very challenging. $5 Admission Benefits Food Ministry

n November 4, 2021, Dollywood officials visited the Sevier County Food Ministries to provide the nonprofit with a check for $65,605, the proceeds from the park’s summer Sevier County Days. The presentation occurred as Dollywood prepares to host its next Sevier County Days during Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana. County residents have an opportunity to help their neighbors while also enjoying the festive environment of one of the nation’s premier Christmas events. Dollywood hosts Sevier County Days each operating day Nov. 6-14, allowing anyone who lives or works in the county to visit the park’s Christmas festival for a $5 donation to the Sevier County Food Ministries. All proceeds from the visits go to the food ministry, helping the non-profit purchase more food items as it approaches the busy holiday season. “It is really special each time we are able to provide

Jim Davis and his hard-working team at Sevier County Food Ministries with the proceeds from our Sevier County Days,” said Carol Agee, Dollywood Community Affairs and Philanthropy Manager. “They do so much to take care of our community, and we are always so honored to help them in their mission. It is the perfect time to provide this check to them because they are preparing for what is one of their busiest times of the year. The winter session Sevier County days took place November 6-14th. Dollywood first started giving to Sevier County Food Ministries in 1998. Since that time, total contributions to the program are more than $1.3 million. In addition to monetary support, Sevier County Food Ministries always accepts passionate volunteers ready to serve others through their efforts. For more information about how to volunteer, please visit seviercountyfoodministries.org.

Dion DiMucci

S

By Randy Patterson Boomerocity.com

ay the name “Dion” (as in Dion and the Belmonts) and all sorts of great songs come to mind. Tunes like “I Wonder Why,” “No One Knows,” “A Teenager in Lover,” “The Wanderer,” and “Runaround Sue” are among the many songs Dion DiMucci has burned into the memory of baby boomers the world over. Since those wonderful days in the late ’50s and early ’60s, Dion has continued to record so much great music, crossing genres and remaining fresh and relevant all the way to today. For proof, one only has to purchase his new album, Stomping Ground, to hear how strong, fresh, and catchy Dion’s new music is. He’s joined on the disc with other great artists such as ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons, Bruce Springsteen, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, Peter Frampton, Joe Bonamassa, and several others. During my conversation with Dion, we talked about the recent album. When I asked how this album is different from the 30+ other albums he has recorded over the years - either solo or with the Belmonts, Dion shared this insight.

“Well, I’d say the last two albums have been the most fun,” he said. “First of all, I feel like I can express a song better than I ever could. I’m writing better songs. Again, I have more life experience, and more to draw on so the songwriting is getting better. I feel like the singing is getting better. My guitar playing has certainly gotten better. I’m picking solos now! I feel like my skills have really improved and developed and evolved. I’ve evolved to what I’m doing now.” Putting a fine point to that comment, Dion said, “I’ve settled (down), and it’s just a beautiful feeling - the friendships and the pouring out of a giving spirit. It’s making great music and making friends with the music; making new friends through the music. It’s been an amazing time for me. I’m glad I lived this long.” When I asked Dion which song on the new album he would point to as a calling card for the whole album, he answered by sharing the story behind “Angel in an Alleyway.” “I’ve been clean and sober 53 years, and

I really felt like, at once. In 1968, an angel touched me, because I haven’t had a drug or drink since. It was killing me. I was really in the throes of like alcoholism and drug addiction. I wrote the song ‘Angel in the Alleyway’ with my guitar, and I sent it to Patti (Scialfa) and Bruce (Springsteen). They sent me back 64 tracks. What you’re hearing is Patti’s arrangement. I told Patti, ‘You’re an angel from Jersey!’” Solidifying his choice of that song, Dion concluded, “Yeah, I’m gonna go with that song, because a few people have responded to it. I love it.” He added that when asked about what the song is about, he explains what “spiritual” means to him. “I felt like I was touched in a very spiritual way at times in my life. To define spiritual means, not physical. Right? There’s a higher reality that people may not get to experience. But if you just open up, are willing, and you ask God to come into your life, there’s a higher reality. Faith is above reason. It’s a higher reality; divine reality; a permanent reality. It’s God’s reality. And I choose to accept his invitation to it. As for what’s on Dion’s radar in the coming months, he shared, “Well, I’ve got a great band. A few of the guys on the album keep calling me and say, ‘Let’s do a show together.’ So maybe there’s a PBS show in the works? I don’t know. But as the country opens up, I just got to get my band and hit the road!” Wrapping up our chat, I asked Dion what he hoped his legacy will be and how

he hopes to be remembered. “I hope people just say he was real, you know? When you unzip him and looked inside - who he was on the outside, he was on the inside. Remembered as a man of prayer. A man who adored his family. “I met this guy - he used to define words for me. He taught me what love meant. I thought love was a feeling. I thought, ‘Boy, I don’t love her anymore.’ No, that’s not love. Love is a decision; it’s an act of your will. You choose to love.” And the world chose to love Dion DiMucci for many decades now and we always will. Dion’s album is available wherever you buy music. You can also order it directly from his website, www.DionDimucci. com, where you can keep up with the latest from Dion.
