A Strong and Dedicated Team is Your Foundation to Success in Buying or Selling Real Estate

Jesse Vose, Owner

Y

O U M A Y R E C A L L several commercials that aired on television a decade or so ago that featured entrepreneurs who purchased companies after their positive experiences with the very products or services offered by these same companies. Well, history has repeated itself right here in Knoxville. Local entrepreneur and Exit Real Estate Professionals Network Associate Broker, Jesse Vose, who first began his self-employment career at a very early age in a business started by his parents, just recently purchased Exit Real Estate Professionals Network, located at 165 West End Avenue in Farragut. Jesse, who has earned a reputation for successful new business startups, is also credited with launching two other successful area businesses, including Knox Graphics & Design in 2017. As an Associate Broker at Exit Real Estate Professionals Network, Jesse had the unique opportunity to observe first-hand how a strong and dedicated team of real estate professionals could combine their individual talents to consistently deliver positive results for their many clients. Recognizing that success in real estate extends far beyond a listing and yard sign, Jesse and his team have developed a comprehensive market approach that is customized for each client and designed to deliver optimal results. We trust you will enjoy this recent interview with Jesse. EK: Describe your early experiences as an Associate Broker at Exit Real Estate Professionals Network. How do they help their Associate Brokers to provide maximum support for their clients and to succeed professionally? Jesse: I was truly excited about my new career as an Associate Broker. Exit’s

training is first class and the strong emphasis on teamwork is very exciting. Their in-depth marketing programs for clients are designed to help new agents like me achieve real success right out of the starting gate. I also appreciate the family atmosphere that exists. My experience truly exceeded my expectations. E K : Purchasing Exit Real Estate Professionals Network had to be the furthest thing from your mind when you launched your new career as an Associate Broker. How did working with your Exit Realty team convince you that purchasing Exit Real Estate Professionals Network was the right decision? Jesse: The positive office culture and big family feel are amazing. It’s what sold me. Our entire focus is directed to our clients, whether they’re buyers or sellers. We treat everyone with the highest level of respect and professionalism. Our clients are consistently expressing their appreciation for the efforts of our team on their behalf. They also share their appreciation for our comprehensive marketing efforts and use of the latest innovations and technologies in today’s fast-paced and ever evolving real estate marketplace. Clients are even more amazed to learn that the Exit Realty Corporation donates 10% of all closed real estate transactions to Habitat for Humanity. When the opportunity to invest in Exit Real Estate Professionals Network became available, it was an easy decision. What’s not to love, right? E K : Describe your comprehensive approach to marketing on behalf of your clients. Jesse: Our marketing efforts extend far beyond the customary listing agreement and yard sign. We make a thorough evaluation of your home. We conduct a price analysis, evaluate demographics on likely buyers, create print and online marketing pieces, and implement email and social media campaigns designed to reach your target audience. And because homes and neighborhoods are often unique, we may utilize a variety of other marketing tools designed to sell your home for the highest possible price and in the least amount of time. EK: How can our readers learn more about Exit Real Estate Professionals Network?

Jesse: We would like to invite them to visit us in person or check us out online on Facebook or Instagram. If they’re looking to buy or sell, we have a team of highly qualified agents available to assist them in selling their existing home or buying their dream home. We really would like your readers to experience what I experienced when I first walked into our office. I think they’ll be as surprised as I was. EK: Because your office has also earned a reputation for training and developing successful Associate Brokers, how can a person who might be considering a full-time or part-time real estate career learn more about joining the Exit Real Estate Professionals Network? Jesse: They can contact me directly at 865335-7270 or email vosepropetygroup@gmail. com, stop in to see what we are about, or set up an appointment. Come see what Exit’s all about and what separates us from the competition, from our marketing, branding, and contributing to our community, to our team building exercises and support for local community events. We are here to help guide you through the process. Whether you’re new to real estate or a seasoned veteran, we look forward to the opportunity to helping you succeed. Watch for our announcements for monthly career nights. We encourage you to RSVP, as space is limited. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Jesse: Only that I look forward to meeting as many of your readers as possible. Buyers, sellers, and potential new agents – we’re anxious to share with you how our success story can become your success story when buying, selling, or searching for a new career opportunity.

Understanding how well you can financially and emotionally withstand a market downturn is critical to building a diversified investment portfolio that suits you. Why is this so very important? When you are invested in your right mix, you’ll stay in the market through its inevitable ups and downs. If you inadvertently take too much risk, you’ll flee to safety as many investors did in 2008. And if you get out, when do you get back in? For those too terrified to get back in the market, they missed the significant upswing in 2009 and beyond. The ability to stay invested in the market over time is critical. According to a Fidelity study, if you invested $10,000 in the S&P 500 index in 1980, it would have grown to $659,591 by 2018. If you missed just five of the best days in that time period, you would only have $427,041. Those five days cost more than $230,000! The statistics don’t lie – jumping in and out of the market does not work. Diversification and disciplined rebalancing is THE key to building wealth over time. It’s simple but not easy.

Six Fun Fashion Tips for Summer B Y C A R R I E M C C O N K E Y, C A R R I E M FA S H I O N C O N S U LT I N G . C O M

S

UMMER ISN’T ONLY about beach vacations and lying by the pool – it’s also the perfect season to add some zing to our everyday wardrobes. Certain items offer both fashion and function during the warm summer months and are easy and affordable to acquire if they aren’t already in our closets.

1. Make white your new neutral. It’s tempting to fall into wearing black yearround. Resist the urge and introduce a crisp white blazer, pant, or other core piece of clothing into your summer wardrobe. Purchase washable pieces if you are prone to spills or stains! 2. Choose a cheerful purse. Airy and fun, woven straw bags bring a bit of the beach to your daily routine. Classy rattan purses provide a dressier look and are guaranteed to bring compliments. Seeking something more traditional? Opt for a colored leather in your choice of pastel or bright. 3. Seek out two pairs of shades. Two sets of sunglasses are all you need to look the part no matter where your summer adventures may lead. Choose a sporty pair for weekend and outdoor activities and an elegant set for when you want to feel as sophisticated as Jackie-O. 4. Invest in special coverage bras. While it’s always good to take stock of your unmentionables (experts recommend replacing bras every six months to a year depending upon how often they are worn), body-baring summer fashions often require strapless and racer back styles. Buy them before you need them!

5. Wear a pair of wedges. Wedge heels mimic the benefits of stilettos by elongating the leg, shaping the calf, and encouraging a sexy stride. But unlike their chic cousins, easygoing wedges provide the benefit of a sturdier, pain-free platform on which to strut one’s stuff. 6. Turn heads in a dress. Summer is the ideal time to break out every woman’s secret weapon: The dress. What can be easier in the morning than not worrying about mixing and matching pieces? Put on a feminine frock and off you go, projecting an effortless elegance the entire day. The lengthy days of summer are a time to recharge and renew before the busy school and holiday months begin. Make the most of the season by integrating these timeless elements into your daily fashion routine and enjoy the sunshine!

Dreading Refinishing Your Home’s Hardwood Floors?

H

O M EOW N E RS SH A R E two common fears when contemplating refinishing their hardwood floors. First, it’s the dust that can permeate every room in their homes, and second, it’s the concern over toxic, solvent-based finishes that can drive you out of your house. First, the finishes. Homeowners have a va riet y of f inishes to select from, including acid-cured and oil-modified. Acid-cured finishes give off formaldehyde (a carcinogen) during the curing process, which can last more than 30 days. And oil-modif ied and acid-cured finishes emit very high VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and harmful fumes, causing the homeowner, pets, and plants to vacate the home for two to three days. Both finishes contain petroleum distillates, which are combustible and flammable. A third finish, from Bona, the world’s premier authority and manufacturer of h a rdwo od f lo or i n g i n s t a l l at ion , maintenance, and renovation products and systems since 1919, is a waterborne finish that is far superior to today’s acid-curate and oil-modified finishes. So where can you learn more about Bona? The answer is simple: From a Bona certified craftsman, Valera Tomescu, owner of European Fine Hardwood Floors. While protecting your family’s safety during the refinishing project and installing the finest and most durable finish available anywhere, Valera will also describe European Fine Hardwood Floors’ most advanced and 99.8% dust-free refinishing system from Bona, the Atomic DCS®. ENTERTAINMENT LINEUP

The Coveralls While The Coveralls have established themselves as full-tilt rockand-roll heavies on the bar scene, their unique versatility and warm energy make them ideal for any party. Their sharp dress and natural ability to fit every party vibe have made them particularly successful at weddings. They have a special gift for “reading the room” and seem to know how to play just the right tunes at just the right time. Classic jazz standards, Motown hits, funk, rock & roll classics, and pop chart gems… they cover it all. With enough advance notice, The Coveralls can even learn special requests, be they special songs for fatherdaughter/couple’s first dances or simply old favorites. Too elaborate for a four-piece? They can DJ to fill in the gaps, making the entire occasion musically seamless, even when they aren’t playing.

Soulfinger They are the keepers of SOUL, those who bare the torch that brings the flame to a new generation to light the fires of FUNK. Soulfinger’s live shows often take on gigantic proportions, stretching deep into the night with a sweaty combo of funk and R&B classics and original songs. The eight-man band, led by singer Tim Spencer and horn player Pee Jay Alexander, shows that they can lay it down smooth.

Take That First Step to a New, Healthier You

Sandra and Michael completed the Spartan Race with their trainer, Taylor (on left), earlier this year

“W

E HAVE BEEN married for

more than 27 years and have three kids – two out of college and one in college,” said Michael Jones, CFO of a local civil engineering firm. “So we are basically empty nesters except for our four dogs – two greyhounds and two mixed breeds.” A few years ago, Michael and his wife, Sandra, a physical therapist, decided it was time to get back in shape. “We both love being active and enjoy standup paddle boarding,” he said. “I am more into sports and play volleyball, golf, and basketball when I can. We were both getting older. We had two kids running track and cross country in college, and we knew we were both out of shape and needed to lose weight. “We selected Fitness Together because the trainer that we started with understood the weight loss process from his own personal experience. My wife thought that this would help him understand the challenges of getting started, and she was right. Our trainer was very good at designing programs to do both with him and on our own at home, and to us, this was invaluable to get started and to keep our momentum. That inspired us to run a Spartan Race along with our trainer.” When asked if they had achieved their individual goals, Michael responded, “I lost about 20 pounds, and my wife lost nearly the same. I would recommend Fitness Together to others because they create workouts for the level you are at and push you to improve.” Would you like to experience a healthier lifestyle? What are you waiting for? Just pick up the phone and call or text Fitness Together at 865-273-0380 today to arrange for your no-cost, no-obligation, complimentary consultation and training session and take that first step to a healthier you.

SUN’S OUT, SNACKS OUT: IT’S FESTIVAL SEASON Secrets to Snacking for Good Health This Festival Season A R T I C L E C O U R T E SY O F B P T

I

T IS THE HEIGHT of festival season, themed around

everything from music, food, and drinks to culture and more. Preparation is key to having a healthy and happy summer. Keeping up your energy levels throughout the day with cleverly planned snacks can help control hunger levels. Check out these tips and tricks, recommended by registered dietitian Toby Smithson, to ensure you’re concentrating on the fun stuff and not depleting energy levels during your favorite festival outings. Long wait, smart snack Always carry smart, portable snacks to have on hand for long breaks between festival sets or to tide the group over before the main food event. Sometimes the food selection is slim, or you don’t feel like standing in a seemingly never-ending line for overpriced food. That’s why it’s also key to have more filling snack foods on hand in case nothing appealing is available and you need them to supplement a meal. Smithson encourages snacks with protein, fiber, and good fats to help you stay energized and full longer. “Almonds are normally included in my go-to snack,” he said. “A carb-only snack just isn’t going to cut it during a full day or afternoon of festival fun!” Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate Bring a reusable water bottle or thermos that you can fill up at water fountains or water stations to stay hydrated all day long, especially if alcohol is involved in your fun! Add orange slices or mint leaves to give your water a refreshing twist. Balance it out Snacks like chips and sweet treats can mean unbalanced eating with too many empty calories that cause your energy to nose-dive. Nutrient-packed snacks like whole fruit and nuts can balance out the spread, helping you to stay strong no matter how long the wait. It’s all about options On your journey to the festival, why not create an on-the-go trail mix by keeping a selection of popcorn, dried fruit, and almonds in the car? It can be easily transferred to your backpack for a quick energy boost. You can also keep this trail mix handy while you enjoy your day and mix up the selection with sweet and savory ingredients. Following are a few great trail mix recipes to try!

Avoid Separation Anxiety as Kids Head Back to School

A

UGUST IS A M O NTH of

change for the family dog. Kids go back to school, football season begins, and we’re constantly on the go. Dogs are creatures of habit – they feel the additional stress of the family’s changing schedule, which can result in anxiety. Causes include: » Separation anxiety: With no kids to play with during the day, begin preparing your dog. A week before school, separate your dog from the family for a short 15 minutes, gradually increasing the time. The dog has been the center of attention during the summer, romping and playing with the kids, and this routine needs to change before school starts. Provide toys for the dog. Have the dog spend more time playing by themselves. Each time you leave the home begin ignoring the dog at least 10 minutes before you depart. » Boredom: Dogs sleep much of the day, and when they wake up, they want something to do. Provide interactive toys, such as peanut butter

filled Kongs, Buster Cube, or a Roll-a-Treat ball. » Holding (nature) too long: It is not reasonable to expect a dog to routinely “hold it” for much longer than eight hours maximum. Do not expect a young or small dog to “hold it” longer than two to four hours. Don’t leave your dog alone for an unreasonable amount of time. » Consider “doggy day care” at Ms. C’s Bed & Biscuits, who offers day camp from 7:30 am to 6 pm Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Dogs love to dig, play, and romp, and Ms. C’s provides a fun, safe, calming environment when family members need to be away for several hours during the day. The Ripple Effect of Delivering Hope

M

ANY PEOPLE in our commu-

nity already know that Random Acts of Flowers (RAF) improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering hope, encouragement, and personal moments of kindness through bouquets of repurposed flowers. But what they – and you – may not realize is that the impact of our mission goes far beyond our direct recipients in hospitals, assisted living homes, hospice, and other community health organizations. Every arrangement delivered also impacts family members, friends, healthcare providers, and volunteers at both RAF and the facilities we serve.

Families and friends can see the positive effect that a floral delivery has on their loved ones. “My husband was at UT Medical Center receiving his chemotherapy, and he received one of your beautiful arrangements. We want to thank you so much!” – Beth, family member Recipients’ healthcare providers and caregivers also get an emotional boost knowing that their patients will be having better days because of the flowers and moments of kindness and connection extended to them. “We can’t begin to thank you enough. They look so beautiful in all of our residents’ rooms.” – Beth, healthcare provider Further, our volunteers often cite the joy

that they get in brightening the days of their neighbors as their main reason for working with us. They know that their efforts don’t just provide one better day to a recipient, but many better days as the flowers will be a recurring reminder that someone cared for them and is thinking of them. “He said he rarely got visitors, let alone flowers, and he really appreciated it. Amazing what a bouquet of flowers can do for a person!” – Becky, RAF volunteer This is what Random Acts of Flowers calls “the ripple effect of delivering hope.” The number of lives impacted by a single delivery goes far beyond the recipient. Our deliveries affect family member, friends, caregivers, volunteers, and – hopefully – you, too! New Feature Exhibition, “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew, Open at the Museum of East Tennessee History MOUNTAIN DEW.

Today it’s the soft drink of gamers and programmers. It “fuels” skateboarders, snowboarders, and racecar drivers. And, for some, it’s the perfect pairing for Doritos or Taco Bell fare. High in sugar and caffeine, Mountain Dew ranks as the third most popular “liquid refreshment brand,” behind only Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola. How did Mountain Dew become so popular at a time when many Americans are looking for healthier beverage options? In a new feature exhibition “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew at the Museum of East Tennessee History, you can explore the drink’s storied history, which began here in the hills of Appalachia. Mountain Dew was invented in Knoxville, Tennessee, in 1946 when Barney and Ally Hartman, of the Hartman Beverage Corporation, first debuted their new soft drink at a Gatlinburg convention. The drink’s trademark became official in 1953. Originally, Mountain Dew’s flavor was lemon-lime similar to 7-Up or Sprite, and it was created by the Hartman brothers primarily as a mixer for hard liquor. In fact, the name Mountain Dew came about because the brothers joked that when mixed with liquor, the drink resembled a fine Tennessee moonshine. To continue the hillbilly aura, the old Mountain Dew bottles depicted a Tennessee moonshiner shooting at a revenuer as he exits an outhouse. Although Mountain Dew was born in Knoxville, it grew up in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sales of the lemon-lime flavored Mountain Dew were modest around Knoxville, so the Hartmans decided to expand their reach by issuing their first franchise to Charlie Gordon of Tri-City Beverage in Johnson City in 1954. Charlie Gordon used unique and aggressive advertising techniques to promote Mountain Dew and to dramatically increase the drinks hillbilly 28

desirability. However, it was not until 1960 when Tri-City’s manager, Bill Bridgforth, changed the flavor to the citrus-lemonade flavor we know today, that the drink began to soar. As Bridgforth put it, “it took off like a cat hit on the tail with a hammer.” About “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A Hillbilly History of Mountain Dew The Museum of East Tennessee History will feature “It’ll Tickle Yore Innards!”: A (Hillbilly) History of Mountain Dew, on view now through January 20, 2020. The exhibition highlights the drink’s history, from the origins of the term “mountain dew” and the development of the marketable hillbilly image that influenced media and culture to becoming the third most popular soft drink brand. The exhibition includes more than 200 artifacts highlighting the drinks history, moonshining, and the hillbilly image. The exhibition begins with video footage of early moonshine busts and a visit to a moonshine still in Cocke County in 1938. A variety of liquor jugs, dating from as early as the 1890s, are on display with other moonshine paraphernalia. There is an assortment of artifacts reflecting the early color writers and their effects on the hillbilly image, as well as artifacts from Knoxville’s 1910 Appalachian Exposition. One case contains a variety of “hillbilly” memorabilia, including Beverly Hillbillies dolls, comic books, Lil’ Abner items, and a pair of Hee Haw overalls. The exhibition features a 1900 carbonation machine from the Roddy Coca-Cola Bottling Company in Knoxville and a sizeable display of rare and highly collectable bottles, including a few dating to Knoxville in 1927, a progression of Mountain Dew bottles over the years, and a variety of other vintage soft drinks from around the region. Of special interest are the “Barney and Ally” bottles, which were the first Mountain Dew bottles

ever produced. In 1951 and 1952, the Hartman Beverage Company produced 7 oz. green and clear bottles. The applied color labels bear the name of the creators of Mountain Dew. In the early 1950s, green bottles were reserved for “colorless” flavors, while clear bottles were used for drinks where the color would reflect the actual flavor. Mountain Dew was originally bottled as a set of flavored drinks and not as a specific flavor like today. Also displayed are a variety of items relating to the Hartmann family. The exhibition by the East Tennessee Historical Society is made possible through a partnership with PepsiCo Knoxville. The exhibit is on view at the Museum of East Tennessee History through January 20, 2020. The Museum of East Tennessee History is open 9 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm Sunday. Museum admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, and FREE for children under 16. Each Sunday admission is FREE to all, and ETHS members always receive FREE admission. The museum is located in the East Tennessee History Center, 601 South Gay Street in Knoxville. For more information about the exhibition, scheduling a school tour, or visiting the museum, call 865-215-8824, email eths@eastTNhistory.org, or visit www. easttnhistory.org. for a new overnight tour: Home of the Corvette in Bowling Green, KY, on Thursday and Friday, September 19 and 20. Visit the National Corvette Museum, the Lost River Cave, and the Fathers of Mercy and enjoy southern hospitality and food. See the National Corvette Museum Explore the 115,000-square-foot museum that features more than 70 Corvettes. You won’t want to miss the “Corvette Cave-in” exhibit that chronicles the sinkhole that opened up in 2014 at the museum, swallowing eight Corvettes. The museum now features a real C6 Corvette augmented with a racing simulator, which, for a small fee, allows visitors to take a virtual drive with life-like movements. For an additional cost, you can reserve a spot and experience racing first-hand! Choose to drive or be behind the wheel of a Corvette (or Camaro) as a passenger. High speed laps put you in the passenger seat with an experienced driver in a Corvette, or you can choose to explore the thrill of the NCM Kartplex, offering high speed go-karts, and race against other members of our tour. Not interested in getting behind the wheel or riding in a Corvette on a racetrack at racing speeds? Step back in time and get a close look at passenger travel with a guided tour of

five authentically restored railcars. Wander through the two-story museum filled with original pieces of history and stories about the railroads. Thursday night dinner will be at Montana Grille, which is warm and inviting, from the hand-hewn logs to the stone wood-burning fireplaces. Cast iron and copper highlights our dining area, including the rotisserie and cooking areas, which are in full view. Details surround our guests, from the décor to our quality food and service. Your trip includes a boat tour of Lost River Cave in Bowling Green, which offers a visit into the timeless world of this natural wonder. BOZ SCAGGS Performs at the Tennessee Theater September 5 IT’S APPROPRIATE

that Boz Scaggs’ latest album is Out of the Blues (July 2018), since the blues is what first sparked his five-decade musical career. Born William Royce Scaggs in Canton, Ohio, on June 8, 1944, he grew up in Oklahoma and Texas, where he spent his teenage years immersed in the blues, R&B, and early rock ‘n’ roll. While attending school in Dallas, he played in local combos. After several years as a journeyman musician around Madison, WI, and Austin, TX, Scaggs spent time traveling in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia, eventually settling in Stockholm, where he recorded the album Boz. Returning to the U.S. in 1967, Scaggs joined the Steve Miller Band in San Francisco, performing on that group’s albums Children of the Future and Sailor before launching his solo career with 1968’s seminal Boz Scaggs LP, recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, for Atlantic Records. Scaggs continued to mine a

personalized mix of rock, blues, and R&B influences, along with a signature style of ballads on such influential ‘70s albums as Moments, Boz Scaggs & Band, My Time, Slow Dancer, and 1976’s Silk Degrees. The latter release became a massive commercial breakthrough, reaching number two and remaining on the album charts for 115 weeks. It spawned three Top 40 hit singles: “It’s Over,” “Lido Shuffle,” and the Grammywinning “Lowdown.” Subsequently, “We’re All Alone,” from that same album, would become a number one single for Rita Coolidge. Silk Degrees was followed by the albums Down Two Then Left and Middle Man and such hit singles as “Breakdown Dead Ahead,” “Jo Jo,” and “Look What You’ve Done to Me.” Despite his ‘70s successes, Scaggs spent much of the 1980s out of the music-biz spotlight, traveling, opening a family business, fathering young children, and founding the San Francisco nightclub Slim’s, He returned to the studio after an eight year hiatus and

released Other Roads, Some Change, Dig, the Grammy-nominated Come on Home, the unplugged Fade Into Light, the in-concert retrospective Greatest Hits Live, as well as a stint touring with Donald Fagen’s New York Rock & Soul Review – all while continuing to maintain a loyal audience in the U.S. and overseas, particularly in Japan. A pair of albums of jazz standards, But Beautiful and Speak Low, the latter topping the Billboard Jazz chart, demonstrated Scaggs’ stylistic mastery, as did the Southern-flavored Memphis and the rhythm & bluesy A Fool to Care. “Music has been a constant companion and I’m feeling more free with it than ever,” said Scaggs. “I feel like I’ve found my voice through all these years, and I’ve gotten closer to where I want to be with my approach.” Scaggs will be performing at the Tennessee Theatre on September 5 at 7:30 pm. Tickets range from $45 to $95. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.tennesseetheatre.com.

GORDON LIGHTFOOT B Y R A N DY PAT T E R S O N , B O O M E R O C I T Y. C O M

I

MAGINE BEING AN ARTIST

whose career is about to span seven decades (yes, seven). Imagine writing songs that are immediately recognizable by every generation who listens to music today. Imagine writing songs that have been recorded by the likes of Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan, Barbara Streisand, Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Olivia Newton-John, John Mellencamp, Harry Belafonte, and countless others.

The artist who personifies that and so much more is none other than Gordon Lightfoot. My earliest remembrances of the Canadian artist (and national treasure, in the opinion of The Band’s Robbie Robertson) are of hearing “If You Could Read My Mind” on the Phoenix radio stations when I was a radio listening 11 year old. I became an instant fan. That following was further solidified when I watched Elvis Presley cover “Early Morning Rain” on his historic “Aloha from Hawaii” televised concert. When I heard that the Canadian legend was going to be performing at Chattanooga’s Tivoli Theatre, I had to reach out for an interview and was thrilled that it was granted. I reached Gordon at his home in Toronto. After making small talk, I asked him how he felt about still performing and having performed for more than six decades. “ We l l , I t h i n k I b e tte r b e prepared!” he said. “I think I had better be prepared and stay prepared. I have a group of people working with me, and they’re all prepared. We’re ready to go. We go on tour seven times a year. Each time we do about 10 or 11 shows. So if you add up the year, we’ve done about 80 shows, and we play all across North America!” Word has been circulating about a possible new album of new material by Gordon, so I asked him about it. “The record is from some newly discovered material that I had forgotten I owned. Honestly. At that point, I really didn’t have enough for another album, but when I found this stuff accidentally one day while cleaning my office, it became

apparent that I had enough material available. It was interesting, too, because it was done just before I had a serious illness. I was at full strength. I was playing really strong on my guitar. My vocals were really at a peak at that point. It was about the year 2000. The stuff was written over a three year period there. I dug it out, and it was so good that I kept it all. I was 32

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2019

able to work on it and do some orchestrating. That stuff sounds great! That’s going to be my 21st album. All original material.” Since Elvis had a song or two of his, I asked Gordon what his thoughts were of the King. “He covered my song Early Morning Rain better than anybody, and I tell ya, a lot of people recorded that song. I like George Hamilton IV doing it best of all. But Elvis? Yes, I almost jumped out of my car when I heard it on my car radio, because that was the first time I knew that he even did the song, when I heard it one day on my car radio when I was driving down the highway. I didn’t even know about it. All of a sudden, there it was, and I said, ‘Oh my goodness! He’s done it!’ I remember buying a guitar when I was 14 when I first started hearing Elvis Presley, and there he was. I almost jumped out of my car, but I was doing about 75 miles per hour at the time. Ha! Ha!” And why does he still do it? “I’m over 80. You’re not supposed to still be doing this when you’re over 80, so they say; still out there playing music. They tell me some people still play until they’re 90. A prime example is Willie Nelson. Tony Bennett. They’re still playing their music. They’re not getting any younger. I really love the work. I feel confident, and I like my material. I stay ready to perform. I stay prepared. You’ve always got to be in a state of readiness to go out seven times a year.” We all hope that Gordon Lightfoot is around and performing for many more years to come. That said, I asked him a question that I’ve asked many of his peers: How do you want to be remembered, and what do you hope your legacy is? His answer was short, sweet, and to the point. “My answer is a l way s s o s i m p l e , it’s so stupid: That I took care of business! Yeah!” My chat with Gordon Lightfoot can be read in its entirety at www.boomerocity.com. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirtysix years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity. com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Mudroom: Form and Function Work Together

M

UDROOM. While some hate

the label “mudroom,” it’s a good description of how we often use the space. It can be a messy catchall for daily items like shoes, coats, bags, and dog leashes. However, the mudroom has evolved into a highly functional family center. Since it’s in a common entryway that visitors see, homeowners want the mudroom to match the style of the house while functioning as a control center. So besides a place to sit as you put on your shoes, the mudroom can be designed to do so much more. Include Hooks and Cubbies Every member of the family needs their own coat hook and cubby space. Kids are more likely to hang their backpack and jackets on a hook, keeping them organized and saving valuable time on school mornings. Cubbies help everyone keep track of everyday items like a purse or cap. Add Cabinets A mudroom is part of your home, so dress up the look of the space by adding cabinet doors over the cubbies. Doors make a mudroom look more stylish rather than a catchall zone. And, let’s be honest, a cabinet door hides any cluttered shelves. Put in a Hamper With a hamper, clothes that are wet or

muddy have a place to go. Otherwise those clothes end up dropped on the floor or left in a kid’s backpack. Nobody wants to discover a smelly, wet t-shirt days later in a backpack! Create a Communications Station Since the mudroom sees daily traffic, make it a place for family communications. Include a chalk or corkboard for reminders such as grocery items or baseball practice. Now the refrigerator won’t be covered with

notes, invitations, and pictures. Also, include USB ports to create a place to recharge cell phones, tablets, and other electronic equipment. Install a Sink A sink helps to cut down on the dirt. So if you have the space, install one to help keep everyone – and your house – clean. Use the Garage If you don’t have the space for a mudroom inside your house, use the garage! Placed just outside the door, a garage mudroom serves the same purpose and keeps a lot of the dirt out of the house. Want to create a mudroom for your house? Tailored Living of Knoxville will work with you to design, select materials that coordinate with the rest of your house, and install the space that best fits your family’s needs. You’ll love your new space and ask yourself, “Why didn’t we do this sooner?”

NOXVILLE’S HISTORIC residential

neighborhoods are important. They contribute to the architectural character of the city, provide walkable neighborhoods, which add to the quality of life for the people who live there, and help tell the story of this city’s history and place in the world. All across the city there are historic neighborhoods and buildings. The National Register of Historic Places recognizes many of these places as either individually important or important as a district when many buildings are grouped together to form notable historic neighborhoods. Edgewood – Park City, Old North Knoxville, and Fourth and Gill are good examples. Some such districts have enhanced protection through city zoning, which designates them as H-1 Historic Districts. These districts have design guidelines that regulate repairs and changes that are reviewed by the Historic Zoning Commission before issuing a Certificate of Appropriateness. Knox Heritage, with funding from the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund, is offering limited “gap funding” to eligible homeowners residing within one of the City of Knoxville’s H-1 Historic Overlay districts. The intent of the Gap Fund program is to assist eligible homeowners with “additional costs” that may derive from requirements associated with receiving a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior property repairs, maintenance, or improvements. It will also reimburse the Historic Zoning Commission application fee in full For Level I or II. How do you know if your project will require a Certificate of 38

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE August 2019

Appropriateness (COA) from the Historic Zoning Commission? Homeowners can check the design guidelines for their district on the MPC Historic Zoning Commission website. Examples of qualifying projects include repair or replacement of roofs, windows, front entrances, porches, siding, and masonry. Items that would not qualify include exterior painting, fences, landscaping, lighting, walkways, and driveways. This is a reimbursement program that will reimburse a qualifying portion of total project expenses. Applicants must be able to pay for all project costs in advance. Funding is available on a first come, first served basis based on the date the application is received. All projects must be completed by December 1, 2019.

For more information, visit www.knoxheritage.org. Knox Heritage preserves structures and places of historic or cultural significance for our community. Established in 1974 as a non-profit educational corporation, our organization works to protect and raise awareness of what is beautiful and irreplaceable in East Tennessee.

individuals wishing to sell unused furniture items either placed an ad in a local newspaper or had a yard sale, but not anymore. Concerns about personal safety have resulted in many Americans turning away from trying to sell any number of household items by themselves. In fact, things have gotten so bad that those selling items on Craigslist are being encouraged by law enforcement agencies across the nation to complete their sales transactions in the parking lots of their local police stations. Selling furniture by yourself is akin to selling your home by yourself. Sure, it can be done, but is it really worth all the effort? Do you really want to invite strangers into your home? Are they there for legitimate reasons or other purposes? Do you take their personal check? What about scheduling appointments and then the annoying no-shows? Let Us Help You Make Your Neighbors Jealous!

M

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM, C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

ANY YEARS AGO my family got a great deal on a large home just

outside of town. I loved the space, the possibilities, and the kitchen. The inside was everything I wanted in a home. Our home was dubbed the “office building.” It was undoubtedly because of its overwhelming brick facade and its lack of windows or landscaping. At that time, my husband, John, was working six days a week, and I was caring for our small children. Sad to say, in the five years we lived there, it STILL lacked curb appeal. Sorry neighbors! Fast forward 15 years… we now run a business that specializes in making homes look their best inside AND out. Most of you probably know as us the “tile cleaning company,” and that’s partially true. For 12 years, tile and grout cleaning has been our most known specialty. We clean most any surface inside the home, including tile and grout, carpeting, granite, and marble. It’s a lesser known fact that we are exceptional at cleaning outdoor surfaces as well. We offer soft-washing for your home’s roof, as well as its exterior, whether brick, siding, or stucco. Soft-washing is effective and safe for your home because of the specialized detergents we use. Many homes are damaged by traditional pressure washing, which is a completely different process than we use. Because we only use a soft pressure spray, your foliage, shutters, and joints will remain intact and protected. We also remove black streaking from roofs before permanent damage occurs. Often sidewalks and pool patios develop mold or algae problems. Without proper cleaning and removal of the imbedded debris, these walkable areas will become slip hazards and suffer permanent damage. Driveways, especially white ones, can become unsightly as they lose their luster and accumulate oil stains. Traditional pressure washing will pit the concrete and cause costly repairs. We have visited many homes where well-meaning homeowners have sadly destroyed their sidewalks and driveways trying to pressure wash them. If you have wood and decking, you may also be dealing with slick areas due to algae build up. Perhaps it has become dry and brittle and needs to be properly cleaned and sealed to avoid costly replacement. We can remove the mold and seal the wood. Each area of your home requires a unique solution. Give Surface Doc a call today for a free inspection and quote. John and his team are specifically qualified to tackle each element and the challenges they represent. Surface Doc will make your home the envy of the neighborhood.

Create Zones for an Organized Pantry

I

F YOU’RE LIKE MOST people,

your pantry could use a little more organization. An organized pantry helps create extra, usable space and allows you and your family to locate and retrieve items more easily. It will also help you keep track of the freshness of your food and manage your overall on-hand inventory. A great first step to more organization is to create pantry “zones,” which simply means that you are grouping like items together and assigning them to a specific area within the overall pantry. It will save you time and effort and increase the joy you get from your kitchen. Here are some suggestions for zoning success. Zone 1: Non-essentials Store lesser-eaten foods in remote areas like top shelves or back corners. Save the accessible areas for everything else. Zone 2: Dry ingredients Place dry ingredients like beans, rice, pasta, flour, and oats in clear, air-tight containers. This will keep them fresh and let you see how much you have left of an ingredient.

VISIT US AT THE KNOXVILLE HOME & GARDEN SHOW 2019 August 24 & 25 Knoxville Expo Center

Zone 3: Canned goods For safety, accessibility, and visibility, store canned goods within arm’s reach. Zone 4: Quick meals Place quick breakfast, lunch, and dinner items at eye level. These are “meal helpers,” and it’ll help you if they’re easy to see and easy to reach. Add an area for snacks where kids and grandkids will be able to reach. Zone 5: Liquids Oils, vinegars, and any non-refrigerated sauces or condiments should be placed as low as possible on a spill-proof mat. Zone 6: Herbs and spices As long as your pantry remains cool and dry, spices can go just about anywhere. Just be certain to place them in an area where they’re easy to reach. A spice rack placed

on the back of the pantry door is a popular option. Zone 7: Special foods Does someone in your home have allergies? Is someone in need of gluten- and wheat-free meals? Consider designating an area in the pantry specifically for those special needs.

Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival at Ijams Nature Center UPCOMING EVENTS AT IJAMS »» August 3: FREE Guided Trail Walk »» August 10: Kayak Program: Evening Wildlife Watch »» August 15: Nature Nuggets: Water Ways »» August 17: Farragut Program: Insect Safari; Bird Abouts: Whip-poor-wills at Chota Memorial

THE

9TH ANNUAL Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival will be held on Saturday, August 24, from 8 am to 2 pm at the Visitors Center at Ijams Nature Center. Visitors have the opportunity to see rubythroated hummingbirds up close at a banding demonstration by Mark Armstrong, a certified Master Bander. Banding demonstrations will take place between 8 and 11:30 am. However, banding is weather dependent and may end earlier if hummingbirds can’t be captured. The Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival began as a joint effort between Ijams and the Knoxville Chapter of the Tennessee Ornithological Society. The event features speakers on nature topics, wildlife educational demonstrations, and local art and craft vendors that specialize in products that showcase nature. Come browse our marketplace of

photography, pottery, jewelry, textiles, and more. This event also features local nurseries with a wide variety of native plants designed to attract hummingbirds and other pollinators to your yard. But the main highlight of this event is the opportunity for visitors to get close to rubythroated hummingbirds and learn about them during the banding demonstrations. Hummingbirds are harmlessly captured, weighed, measured, and banded before being sent on their way. Banding provides a way to document hummingbird movement during migration. August and September are busy migration months in Tennessee, with thousands of hummingbirds moving south on their way to wintering grounds in Central America and Southern Mexico. Parking for this event will take place in all

Ijams Nature Center parking lots. Visitors also can park at Forks of the River Wildlife Management Area (3140 McClure Lane) and take a shuttle to the event. Please note that we do not allow dogs at the Wonder of Hummingbirds Festival. Although dogs are welcome at many of our events, the Hummingbird Festival is not a good fit since all of the speakers and the children’s crafts are indoors (where dogs are not allowed), and dogs are not allowed at the banding station. Tickets are available at the door on the day of the event and cost $8 for ages 12 and up, $4 for children ages 5-11, and free for children 4 and under. Family passes for parents/guardians plus up to four children are available for $20. For more information, visit www.ijams.org.

The Holiday Season Begins in Just 4 Months BY KERRY MCDUFFIE, OWNER OF SUPERIOR CARPET & RUG CLE ANING

T

HAT’S RIGHT, Thanksgiving is less

than four months away. Remember last holiday season? Remember the pre-holiday to-do list? Remember trying to complete that to-do list in just a few days instead of a few months? Remember wishing the holidays were over? This is a great time to begin planning for this season’s holiday events. As a father and grandfather, I know how important this time of the year can be for families but also how stressful. At Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning, we’ve been helping busy families prepare for busy holiday seasons since 1985. Is cleaning your home’s carpeting, Oriental and area rugs on your to-do list? Why not enhance the appearance of every room in your home while providing a clean and healthy surface for your children and grandchildren to play on? There’s also a practical side. Clean carpets and rugs will not only look better longer, but they’ll also last longer. Abrasives, dirt, and other contaminants are tracked into our homes and onto our carpeting and rugs not only make them look dull and dingy, but can also permanently damage your carpeting and rug fibers. And snow and ice removal chemicals that are tracked into your home over the course of the winter can chemically bond to carpet and rug fibers, significantly shortening their life expectancy. Our truck-mounted cleaning system uses stateof-the-art technology to remove the dirt and grime that other systems simply leave behind. And our Oriental and area rug cleaning boutique uses an 11-step proprietary cleaning process that can safely clean most rugs that mat be destined to become a family heirloom. We have also recently made significant investments in even newer technology to ensure that we can continue to offer you the very best Oriental and area rug washing services in East Tennessee. So if you can use a little help preparing for the holiday season this year – and who couldn’t – remember the company who has earned a superior reputation for unmatched superior cleaning: Superior Carpet & Rug Cleaning.

UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Chastetree BY CAROL REESE, UT EXTENSION WESTERN REGION HORTICULTURIST, AND RICHARD GIBSON, ASSISTANT HORTICULTURIST AT THE UT GARDENS, JACKSON

ANCIENT CHASTETREES,

also called Vitex agnus-castus, can be found at old homes across the South, a testimonial to its durability. A couple of decades ago old homesteads were about the only place you might run across them, as they were considered passé and were no longer carried in garden centers. Fortunately, chastetrees have gone through a revival in popularity, and many forms are currently available in the trade. A variety of growth habits, from small trees to rounded shrubs, will suit many landscapes. Terminal bloom panicles are usually in shades of blue, purple or lilac, but white- and pink-blooming forms can also be found. Although its other attributes are plenty, the bloom time for this plant has been extended later in the year in some of the newer cultivars, making chastetree an even more garden-worthy plant. It is also extremely drought tolerant once established and has no pests or disease issues. Another endearing quality of this plant is the back story. Chastetree earned its name because it was said to be an herb given to monks to suppress their sex drive and thus help to keep them chaste. It was also strewn into the beds of women whose husbands were away in war to help cool their lust. The plant’s Latin name acknowledges the story, with ‘agnus’ being derived from the Greek word ‘hagnos’, meaning pure or virginal, and the Latin word ‘castus’, meaning chaste and moral. If you peruse herbal products sold in drugstores that are intended to help women with a variety of hormone-based disorders, you will find chastetree listed as an ingredient, and in a small number of reputable double-blind studies, it has been shown to have some efficacy. This does not confirm the plant’s storied reputation for suppressing the libido, but it does hint that there is some effect on human hormone levels. Plant this deciduous shrub in full sun and well-drained soil. Larger cultivars can be limbed up to form small trees, and dwarf cultivars make rounded shrubs that range from three feet to several feet tall. When needed, chastetree size can be controlled by 48

pruning back as it will bloom on new growth. This is an asset that allows it to be used as a cutback shrub in regions of Tennessee where it is marginally hardy. Even in warmer parts of Tennessee, there may be dieback during years of severe winter, but re-growth from roots can be expected from well-established plants. Some common cultivars include: » Blue Puffball™ (First Editions®), deep blue blooms, 3 to 4 feet tall and wide » Delta Blues™ (First Editions®), purple blooms, 10 feet tall » Blue Diddley® (Proven Winners®), purple blooms, 7 feet tall » ‘Shoal Creek’, purple bloom, 15 feet tall with 12-inch inflorescences

Gardeners in colder parts of Tennessee may wish to try a different species of chastetree, Vitex negundo, which is hardier by several degrees. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. Designated as the official botanical garden for the State of Tennessee, the collections are part of the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The Gardens’ mission is to foster appreciation, education, and stewardship of plants through garden displays, educational programs, and research trials. The Gardens are open during all seasons and free to the public. For more information, visit www. ag.tennessee.edu/utg. Photo by C. Reese, courtesy UTIA

August in the Garden BY LISA GRUGIN

WELCOME

TO the Dog Days! Is August anyone’s favorite month? It is hot and humid, bugs and fungus are rampant, and gardening chores that were once pleasant are now a true chore. Those jobs must be done, however, so pick a nice cool morning and head on outside with a cold beverage, a bottle of bugspray, and a hat! » Do your walk around. You can’t properly check your plants from the recliner in the AC! Check up, down, and all around for problems that need to be addressed. I know the temptation is to just give up and let things die, but many plants will perk up as temps cool. » Please keep an eye on your trees. I know several people who have had to have trees cut this year because they had become a hazard. If the tree has ever been topped, if it has lots of woodpecker holes, if it has shelf mushrooms, or if it is oozing, have it checked by an arborist. We had one cut last week that I am sure would have landed on our bedroom in the next big storm. » You can still plant small shrubs,

perennials, and annuals this month. If your containers or bedding plants have gone south, don’t hesitate to pull plants out and replace them. Life is too short for ugly plants! » What is the water situation? We never know if Mother Nature is going to be kind or cruel, so always be prepared. Remember that 1” of rainfall or more each week is necessary to get trees and shrubs established, and watering at ground level with a soaker hose or hand watering is best for most plants. (As a reminder, shrubs are not considered established until after the first full year and trees take up to three years.) » I have seen all sorts of fungal problems on everything from trees to vegetables, so keep an eye out for that. Many fungal diseases can be treated organically with copper or a horticultural oil, but a few will need more aggressive treatment. Stop by with a sample and we can help you figure out the best treatment. » What is the insect population in your yard? Remember that not all bugs are bad, so determine what is actually

causing problems before you start spraying. Aphids, thrips, mites, mealybugs, lacebugs, and whiteflies are bad. Ladybugs, lacewings, bees, centipedes, and spiders are good. If the bad bugs are winning, start with the lowest strength chemical possible (like insecticidal soap) and then increase the intensity if necessary. It is also best to spray in the evening after bees have returned to the hive. In any case, please call us or do your research before treating. The overuse of insecticides is killing beneficial insects and causing the bad guys to become resistant. » How are your vegetables? I know the erratic rainfall has caused some problems in my garden, and I have also lost a couple of plants to disease. It happens, so don’t take it personally if some things fail. That’s how we learn. Here are a couple of suggestions: 1. Take your watering seriously. Ground level watering is best. Erratic watering causes splitting and adds to blossom end rot problems. 2. Don’t waste your time and money on flimsy tomato cages. I hate those because just as your tomato reaches a nice height, the stupid things fall over in the wind! 3. Don’t overdo the fertilizer. Too much nitrogen will give you a lovely green plant with no produce. 4. Make sure you are getting enough sunlight. Six hours is the minimum. 5. Move things around. Do not put the same plants in the same place every year or you will end up with diseases. 6. Mulch. This protects the plants from splashing, keeps soil temps and moisture levels stable, and keeps squash and other produce off the soil. It will also help to keep the weeds out. » Speaking of weeds, what is your weed situation? Have you been using a pre-emergent and doing regular weeding, or are you up to your eyeballs in unwanted plants? It is best to get them out now before they go to seed, so don’t put this chore off too long! » Did you do something for the earth this year? Did you plant for pollinators? Did you lay off the toxic chemicals? Do you have a birdbath and/or bird feeder? If not, please consider doing it now or next year. Mother Nature needs our help. Remember that we will be getting our fall merchandise in soon, and this is also a good time to start planning for fall planting. Stop by and see us to start the planning process or if you have questions!

Are Fall Invaders Already In Your Home?

BEFORE

they arrive!

A

S THE SUMMER heat continues

through August, Fall Invaders – such as ladybugs, kudzu bugs, box elder bugs, and stink bugs – are building up large populations in and around your house. When the weather cools, they will try to get inside your home to hibernate. In the meantime, all the Warm Weather Pests are still out in full force – mosquitoes, ants, bees, ticks, fleas, roaches, and yellow jackets. Bedbug populations peak in the warmer months, so be on the lookout for them especially when you travel or buy any used furniture. Once bedbugs get inside your home, they can reproduce quickly and cause a heavy infestation. The best pest management approach is to have Dayton’s professionals protect your home yearround with quarterly perimeter pest control! It’s convenient, affordable, and effective in controlling bugs so you won’t end up with a bigger problem. Fall Invaders require a special treatment protocol, so it’s best to get your home treated NOW – prior to their arrival – so they won’t spend the fall and winter inside your home. And yes, mosquitoes are still out biting and carrying diseases like the West Nile or Zika virus! Dayton’s can get rid of all your pests, guaranteed!

retractable screens, you’re likely not enjoying your outdoor living spaces to their fullest. Why? Because the hot summer sun and biting insects, in larger numbers than ever due to abundant rain and humidity, are probably keeping you indoors. But there’s a solution. Homeowners across the country are increasingly creating popular outdoor “rooms” such as porches and lanais with kitchens complete with large, permanently-installed grills, refrigerators and work areas, luxurious fireplaces, beautiful lighting, and even artwork specially made to be weather-proof. Unfortunately, hot afternoon sun and biting insects often keep homeowners from using their new outdoor living spaces as often as they might have hoped to. Retractable screens provide the perfect solutions to these problems. By combining indoor and outdoor spaces, these innovative screen solutions enhance and promote the outdoor living experience. They provide shade and allow people to enjoy the out-of-doors during hot summer days, extending the time spent on patios while keeping annoying, biting insects at bay. Large, motorized screens are a perfect example of how to blend function with comfort. These screens can be recessed into the beams or walls of a building, thereby staying truly hidden when fully retracted. One of the best features of retractable screens is that these screening solutions don’t diminish your views or your home’s aesthetics, as the screens are in place only when needed. For the ultimate in elegance, many of the retractable screen solutions can be blended into virtually any architectural style. These retractable screens are available in a variety of custom colors and wood grain finishes to complement your home’s interior or exterior color schemes. The screens can also be programmed to come down and retract with sun and wind sensors and can be connected to your home’s automation system to have the screens come down at a specific time of day when extra shade or insect protection are called for. Start enjoying your home’s great out-of-door living spaces. For more information about retractable screen options, visit www.phantomscreens.com.

Clear the Garage Clutter

N

O, IT’S NOT just you. Some of

the mess and mounds of stuff in your garage are often just the busyness of life. However, without efficient storage and organization solutions, clutter and chaos will continue to plague you. If your garage looks chaotic, you can quickly gain control with custom garage storage cabinets from PremierGarage of Knoxville. PremierGarage, powered by Tailored Living, will help you find storage space for just about everything. One of the biggest advantages of custom garage cabinets is they are tailored to your specific space so you can maximize the available storage space. Cabinets are designed to fit around water heaters, electrical panels, doorways, and windows. You’ll get a clean, uniform look throughout your garage without having to piece together readymade, do-it-yourself storage pieces. Styles include traditional cabinet doors or sliding doors for enclosed cabinets in narrow spaces. Cabinets can be integrated with countertops, drawers, and wall-hanging storage systems to maximize your storage space. One-inch-thick adjustable shelves inside the cabinets hold large plastic bins and other large items. Other cabinet and storage options include: » Adding locks to doors or drawers provides

additional safety precautions to keep tools or toxic products like paint thinner, radiator coolant, and fertilizer out of reach of children. » Slatwall with its various hooks and baskets is ideal for sports equipment and large tools like rakes, shovels, and hoses. Slatwall helps keep everything off the floor and close to the wall for easy accessibility. » Overhead automated lift systems for bikes, kayaks, and other items keep large objects safe from the outside weather but doesn’t take up valuable garage floor space.

» Tailored Living’s wide range of styles, finishes, and colors let you coordinate your garage cabinets with your home’s existing décor, or you can create a whole new look for the garage. The perfect foundation for your garage cabinets is a durable custom garage floor. PremierGarage, the nation’s leader in garage enhancements and remodeling, can transform an oil-stained, pitted, or peeling epoxy-coated garage floor into a showroom quality look. PremierGarage uses a proprietary hybrid polymer technology to provide a high-quality finish that is chemical, stain, and slip resistant. And there are multiple colors that coordinate with your cabinets. Never dread going into the garage again! Call PremierGarage of Knoxville to schedule a free, in-home consultation to help clear the clutter!

“Pardi Gras” with Roux du Bayou Cajun Band August 30 from 6 to 8:30 pm The “Fat Friday Mardi Gras” Alive After Five has been the most popular theme show here for many years, and ever since their first performance in 2012, by popular demand, Roux du Bayou Cajun Band has been invited back every year to play for it. This year, due to a scheduling conflict at the museum, we were unable to schedule “Fat Friday Mardi Gras,” but that’s not stopping us from bringing Roux du Bayou back to play for us. Led by Paul Gregoire from Dulac, Louisiana, Roux du Bayou plays authentic cajun, zydeco, swamp pop, mardi gras music, and more. The band has been together for 17 years, and in 2010, they won the prestigious 1st Runner-Up award in the category Prix de Hors Nous for best cajun band outside of Louisiana from the Cajun French Music Association. It’s a few months past Mardi Gras, so we’ll call it “Pardi Gras,” and everyone is encouraged to wear purple, gold, and/or green to add to the “Big Easy” merriment as we “laissez les bontemps roulez” on Labor Day weekend! Terina Gillette

Terina Gillette: Discovery: An Exploration of the Nuances of Life in the Main Gallery Discovery: An Exploration of the Nuances of Life is a celebration in acrylic, pastel, and mixed media of all the small things that work together to bring joy, happiness, peace, or puzzlement. Sometimes hearing a bird singing or seeing a fish swimming makes us take notice of the simple beauties that create our world. Each of us have small nuances that greet us daily, and when we stop to discover them, we embrace who we are, where we have been, and where we are going. Many of the pieces in this exhibition represent special moments in the artist’s life, and perhaps these are things that you also celebrate. Terina Gillette is a Tennessee native. She works in a wide variety of mediums and is diverse in her expression and abilities. She creates colorful, texturized abstracts, as well as detailed local landmarks. She is also a face and body painter and spends each weekend painting theatrical face paints on living canvas. She believes that art is the full expression of life. You can find various installations of her painted window glass art, as well as her chalk murals, around East Tennessee. Gillette holds a double cognate in counseling and crisis, grief, and trauma, as well as business, and is currently completing her master’s in psychology. Her educational pursuits heavily influence her pieces, and her view of art is immersed in expression regardless of the subject matter.

Mariclair Tan

Broadway Studios & Gallery: Rare Combinations in the Balcony Gallery Rare Combinations features an eclectic mix of work in various media by 10 artists based in Broadway Studios and Gallery (BSG): Sheila Chesanow, Nancy Rowland Engle, Anne Freels, Jessica Gregory, Paula Johnson, Katie Kinney, Jeremy Logan, Stacy Monday, Pat O’Neil, and Mariclair Tan. BSG is a co-op of artists working in individual studios under one roof. These uniquely talented artists create original sculpture, paintings, pysanky, jewelry, photography, collage, and fine craft on-site. Adam Newman: Delusionary on the North Wall Statement: Delusionary can be defined as one having the ability to see and believe alternate versions and personalities of others formed in an ever-evolving environment of the mind, which may or may not be based upon Adam Newman real interactions. Born of frustration and confusion, delusionary is an investigation. An intro, a sore yet needful beginning to what will hopefully yield a promising conclusion. A collection of introspective works presented through mixed media panels. Created by working through the subjective rather than the objective. Unlike my last project in which I utilized a realism style, here I work with less planning and in most all cases find myself coming to dead ends that I am forced to work past rather than simply starting over. The process mimics that of my thoughts in a romantic relationship. In viewing these panels, you see firsthand my struggles, and to this point failure, to orchestrate a working version of romantic love. Michelle Barillaro: Travel in the Display Case This new exhibition features abstract paintings with acrylic, charcoal, and graphite. Michelle Barillaro is a native of South Florida and moved to Knoxville more than 20 years ago, graduating from the University of Tennessee, School of Architecture. She remained in the Knoxville area because of the friendly folks,

Michelle Barillaro

natural beauty, and pleasant climate. However, many of her paintings seem to reflect the colors, movement, and serenity of the Florida coast. She paints with acrylic and oil and cold wax and often incorporates a dash of charcoal, graphite, and pastels. She uses palette knives, bowl scrapers, credit cards, her fingers, and an occasional hake style brush to create her work. As a result, her paintings are abstract in nature with a multi-textural, often ethereal feel.

League of Scruffy Photographers: Observing Knoxville in the Atrium The League of Scruffy Photographers was formed initially as a social group for local photographers. It became readily apparent that there was a tremendous amount of talent and experience contained in that initial group of seasoned individuals. As the group grew with younger, eager, and undiscovered artists, the potential for a group that could educate and put forth a number of projects coalesced. Currently the group includes educators and long-time volunteers, so workshops and collaborations with other entities are in the future. Taking a page from Roger May’s “Looking at Appalachia” and a photo project proposed for TVA in the 1980s, “Observing Knoxville” came about. The League intends over the next year to document all aspects of Knoxville. The good and the bad. A candid, no holds barred look at our fair “Scruffy” city. Beginning with its neighborhoods and moving on to its people and what they do for work and leisure to lifestyles, education, transportation, music, food, and drink to government. The exhibitions are on display at the Emporium Center, located at 100 S. Gay Street in downtown Knoxville. Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday from 9 to 5 pm. Your Untapped Sales Potential B Y TO M I R M E N

IF

Y O U ’ R E a small business owner that finds it necessary to employ salespeople (we call them account executives today), you’re not alone. But hiring and retaining great salespeople can be a challenge. Not that there aren’t great salespeople out there, but they are coveted by their employers who often pay them high salaries and commissions, and a growing number of these sales superstars have decided to pursue their own self employment dreams. But there is even a larger, untapped sales force available to you that will cost you very little and consistently outperform even your greatest sales superstars. Who am I talking about? Your customers. And all you need to do to unleash this untapped potential is to deliver a product or service that provides a value that’s perceived to be far greater than the price paid.

By focusing entirely on the results that meet or exceed your clients’ expectations, your efforts will lead to referrals, which will lead to new sales, which will lead to more referrals, which will lead to more sales. Sound too simple? It is, but few businesses take advantage of this free and unlimited resource. Why? One reason is that far too many business owners and their salespeople are in hot pursuit of the sale and not the

customer experience. If you sell advertising, instead of focusing on commissions and sales revenue, focus all of your attention on producing results that exceed your clients’ expectations. If you don’t think your client knows the difference, you’re fooling yourself. By focusing entirely on the results that meet or exceed your clients’ expectations, your efforts will lead to referrals, which will lead to new sales, which will lead to more referrals, which will lead to more sales. You get it. Instead of chasing advertising revenue, you’ll discover that revenue will be chasing you, because revenue growth is the by-product of a successful customer experience and not the reverse. Put your customers’ expectations ahead of your own, and watch your customers turn into the greatest sales team you’ve ever known.
