But as the time draws near, we often become apprehensive, recognizing that retirement is much more than the savings that you’ve managed to accumulate and your newfound free time. You find yourself asking: » Will I need to reduce my spending in retirement? » Is there a chance I will outlive my retirement savings? » Will future tax increases erode my savings? » How will I be able to afford an unexpected medical emergency? And that doesn’t count the more concrete questions of when to start Social Security and which Medicare supplement plan to choose. Retirement is uncharted waters. You’ve observed your parents and others during retirement, you search online for retirement related subjects, you share experiences and expectations with family and friends. You make the best decisions you can, often guided only by your gut instinct. But in retirement, there are no do-overs, so a growing number of people are choosing
professional help with a comprehensive approach that combines investment advice with financial planning, tax strategies, insurance solutions, and legal planning. In this month’s issue of Everything Knoxville, we are delighted to share with you our recent interview with Marsh Wealth Management founders, and husband and wife team, Mike and Yvonne Marsh. Having earned a well-deserved reputation among retirees for their comprehensive approach to retirement planning, we are confident that you will enjoy their thoughts on retirement whether you’re retired, near retirement, or years away from retirement. EK: Yvonne, I enjoyed the analogy on your website comparing the navigation of retirement to planning a trip to somewhere you’ve never been before. Like an experienced travel guide, how can Marsh Wealth Management help me to successfully navigate my retirement? Yvonne: We know the number one goal for retirees is to maintain their lifestyle in retirement without the worry of running out of money. So our approach is three-fold: First, we help people define what their lifestyle is Photos by D. Roberts Photography
going to look like. Second, we help them identify potential pitfalls or obstacles and come up with solutions that fit them. Then, just as importantly, we act as their guide on this “retirement trip,” making sure everything works smoothly leading up to retirement, the transition from a paycheck to a play check is seamless, and all of the little gotchas are taken care of for them. Their biggest task is deciding on their first post-work vacation! EK: Mike, what is the number one mistake would-be and existing retirees make in planning? Mike: They stay aggressively invested for too long as they’re approaching retirement. The Fragile Decade – the five years leading up to retirement and the five years after retirement – is the most critical time period in predicting the success of a 30+ year retirement plan. Waiting until a year or two ahead of retirement to reduce the risk in your portfolio is waiting too long. EK: The equity markets have a long history of very good returns on average, but I’m fearful of losing money in a market downturn. What suggestions do you have for me? Mike: We use an investment bucketing strategy that allocates a client’s portfolio into time segments: Now, Soon, and Later. The idea is simply that the Now bucket is rainy day, emergency, and planned expenses tucked safely in bank accounts. The Soon bucket is money earmarked for spending in a retiree’s first phase of retirement and more conservatively invested, while the Later bucket is money designated for the second phase of retirement so it can have more growth orientation. We all know that we build wealth by staying invested in the markets over time, and this three-tiered allocation gives our clients the confidence to do just that. EK: How can you help me overcome the often high costs arising from an unexpected medical emergency that was not in my spending plan? Yvonne: By helping you be proactive and not reactive: Planning for those costs before they happen. First, we help clients identify and quantify which costs aren’t covered by Medicare, and then we talk about their options. Many folks don’t know there is a great option that pays for home health care, assisted living, and other long-term care costs and also provides a death benefit to heirs if you don’t end up needing those benefits. The cost and the benefits are guaranteed at issue, so it really creates a lot of clarity and confidence for today’s retirees. It’s a great solution, but only about one out of every 10 people I talk to have ever heard of it. EK: What is the impact to today’s retirees who are living longer than either their parents or grandparents? Mike: We think of longer life spans as a risk multiplier – it multiplies the number of times to which your portfolio could experience a market correction and the higher likelihood someone will experience an expensive health
event. And inflation is a sneaky factor that can really eat into a retiree’s ability to afford everything they are used to buying. We work with clients to design strategies that will serve them well no matter how long they live. Yvonne: That’s right. I never want an 85 year old client to come to me and say, “Well, it’s been fun, but I’m out of money.” Our plans are designed to last as long as they do! EK: What if the government should raise taxes during my retirement years? Yvonne: Well, truthfully, we already know that they are going to raise taxes when our current tax code expires at the end of 2025. It’s already written into the law that our personal tax rates will revert back to the higher pre-Tax Cuts and Job Act of 2017 levels. So taxes are on sale right now! Many people should be, at a minimum, executing Roth IRA conversion strategies up to and within the current 24% bracket. That is an integral service we offer to our wealth management clients. EK: It’s obvious that a successful retirement plan includes a great many considerations. How can you help me create a comprehensive plan that will help me to sleep at night? Yvonne: It’s so true that the devil is in the details. And we actually start with some non-financial details – such as reviewing healthcare directives and identity theft protection and providing a survivor’s guide for heirs. Some clients don’t need extensive financial planning, so we focus on creating an Investment Bucket Strategy that can sustain their income needs. Other clients need extensive financial and tax planning, so we create a comprehensive plan addressing those needs. It’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all process. EK: What is the best way to select a qualified wealth advisor as I’m trying to navigate all of the financial decisions a retiree has to make? Yvonne: First, understand how they are paid. A fiduciary is compensated as a percentage of assets, whereas a broker dealer is compensated by commissions on account activity. You have to decide which business model best aligns with your own interests. Second, professional credentials are important, and we proudly have CFP®s and CPAs in our office. The continuing education commitment that these licenses require keep us technically sharp. Third, and just as important, is finding someone you can connect with on a personal level. Your advisor is there to guide you through a journey that will be uniquely yours – and you want to have a relationship that you are confident to call on at any time.
EK: We’ve talked a great deal about wouldbe and existing retirees, but what about those of us that are still working and saving for retirement? Where’s the best place to invest our savings? Mike: By far, the number one thing we get asked by people still working is “Can you help me with my 401(k)?” And truthfully, this is a huge societal issue. Companies have moved away from pensions and put the burden of saving and investing on their employees, but the vast majority of people don’t know which investments to choose. And who wants to go home after a hard day at work and research mutual fund choices while you’re juggling kids and dinner? So we’ve just introduced a service called Plan Confidence, which allows us to help people choose their 401(k) investments, using the mutual funds that their employer offers, with no IRA rollovers needed. The money stays right in the 401(k). It’s a monthly subscription service, and we connect with clients through a secure website and mobile app. No office visits required for busy people! EK: How can I learn more about Marsh Wealth Management? Do you offer a complimentary consultation to determine if there is a “good fit” between your integrated team and myself ? Yvonne: Our website is always a great place to start. We’ve worked hard to lay out how we approach retirement planning and the strategies that we employ, so it gives people an easy first step to see if we would be a good fit for them. Then give our office a call to set up a time where we can introduce ourselves and hear your story – what you’re excited about and what you’re worried about – and decide how we might be of help to you on your retirement journey. EK: In closing, is there anything else you would like to add? Yvonne and Mike: Truly, we are all in this together. Everyone’s future is equally unknown, and there’s no need to try to figure it out by yourself. America’s Best Christmas Event Returns During Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas

early in the Smokies thanks to the festival voted the Best Theme Park Christmas Event in America for 12 consecutive years, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas presented by Humana (now through January 4, 2020). During the festival, the park boasts an impressive count of more than five million brilliant lights, heartwarming Christmas entertainment, delicious holiday meals, and the fun of Dollywood at Christmas. Glacier Ridge presented by Goo Goo Cluster® opened last season, providing guests a completely new way to experience the Smokies at Christmas. Thanks to the opening of Wildwood Grove earlier this year, there is even more to explore in this dazzling area. Glacier Ridge offers a number of activities, displays, and dining options to enjoy for guests while they wander through this immense winter wonderland, which includes the areas of the park known as Timber Canyon, Wildwood Grove, Wilderness Pass, and the upper portion of Craftsman’s Valley. “There’s nothing like Christmas in the Smokies,” said Dolly Parton. “I’ve been a lot of places and seen a lot of things, but the feeling of being home with the people I love at Christmas really is one of the most special things in the world to me. It’s my hope that the people who come experience my Dollywood at Christmas make those same sweet memories they’ll be able to share forever. I also hope we’re able to help them start some brand new Christmas traditions right here!” Guests visiting Glacier Ridge may feel as if the Smokies have frozen over, and they’ve been transported to the arctic. Those coming to Glacier Ridge through Craftsman’s Valley experience a one-of-a-kind light installation that mimics the natural phenomenon known as the aurora borealis. Guests can walk through Dollywood’s version of the Northern Lights, brought to life with music as only Dolly can do to help guests feel as if the aurora borealis has come south, even if for just a few weeks. From the cheer and joy of Dollywood’s Parade of Many Colors to traditional holiday shows like It’s a Wonderful Life and Christmas in the Smokies, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas fosters family memory making for guests. For those who wander through the spectacular scenery, it is easy to understand
why it has become a family tradition for so many. Guests can experience the fun enchantment of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer and friends straight from the children’s holiday classic or sit down together for a fabulous Christmas feast at many of Dollywood’s award-winning dining locations. ANY OF US relish time outdoors in beautiful East Tennessee during the spring, summer, and fall. But when football season ends and the busy Christmas season hits, our attention turns to indoor activities. The cold winter months of the New Year seal the deal when it comes to hunkering down at home. There’s no better time to organize the interior of your house and no better project than tackling your closet! The Big Empty Empty your entire closet if you can. (Considering a closet redesign? Now is the time to act since you’ll have to take everything out anyway.) If you can’t remove the whole lot at once, take clothing groups out one at a time (for example, all jeans) and set up a staging area to examine them unhindered. Purge if it doesn’t fit, is dated, or if you think it’s boring or unimpressive when you see it. (Yes, even if you’ve never worn it.) Make a pile to donate or consign, but leave it overnight in case one of the pieces calls out to you that it’s not ready to leave quite yet. Clothes Zones Create zones in your closet that reflect your life activities. Make a “workout zone” for your gym wear, a “career zone” for work clothes, a “weekend zone” for social
duds and figure out why they haven’t made their debut. Did you buy the item at the end of the last season and haven’t had the chance to wear it yet? Is the piece a “goal” size that remains, ummm, a goal? Or did it get trapped between some other clothes and you simply forgot you had it? Revisit why you bought the garment, and don’t be afraid to let go if your heart is telling you it just isn’t going to work. As 2019 comes to a close and you’re preparing for new experiences in 2020, do the same in your closet. Sing Auld Lang Syne as you reminisce and purge, creating space to let new sartorial adventures unfold!

The Boyces commissioned the ornament from Joy to the World Collectibles, a Knoxville-based company. Each ornament is meticulously crafted by hand by European artisans. Ornaments will be available for purchase at the Knoxville Visitors Center, located at 301 S. Gay Street, and online at www.sunspherefund.com. Cost of the ornament is $55 plus tax. Five dollars from the purchase of each ornament will go to the Sunsphere Fund, a fund created by Visit Knoxville, with the city’s support, to help preserve and maintain this beloved city icon. Ornaments may be shipped for an additional fee, or a free pickup location may be selected. Only 500 Sunsphere ornaments will be available before Christmas. Additional ornaments will be available for purchase in January 2020. The idea for the ornament originated with Knoxville natives Guinn and Derek Boyce. About the Sunsphere Since 1982, the Sunsphere, the symbol of the 1982 World’s Fair, has served as an iconic feature of the Knoxville skyline. It’s the only structure of its kind in the world. After the World’s Fair, with brief exception, the Sunsphere was closed to the public. It reopened after renovation in 2007. In 2014, in an effort to provide an enhanced experience for visitors and locals, Visit Knoxville updated the 4th Floor Observation Deck with new graphics and information on Knoxville and the World’s Fair. Since that time, the Sunsphere has welcomed countless visitors from (rather appropriately) around the world. Designed by the architecture firm Community Tectonics as the theme structure for the 1982 World’s Fair, the Sunsphere is noted for its unique design and stands 266 feet high/26 stories tall. The 24-karat gold-dust filled, glass-paneled ball is 75 feet in diameter. Each pane of glass is made with 24-karat gold, giving the Sphere its reflective gold color. Each pane cost around $1,000 at the time of construction.

ABY BOOMERS certainly remember the great days when quality TV programming was available. Some of my earliest childhood memories were watching the Dean Martin Show and the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts on TV with my parents. They were absolutely hysterical and entertaining. For as far back as I can remember, one of the songs I heard countless times every Christmas season was Dean Martin’s 1959 classic, “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” I never gave it much thought past the fact that it was a great Christmas classic. In more recent years, but “PC” (pre-controversy), Colbie Caillat and Gavin DeGraw, Rufus Wainwright and Sharon Van Etten, Cee Lo Green and Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson and Ronnie Dunn, and Lady Gaga and Joseph Gordon-Levitt all recorded the classic song. Last year the Dean Martin classic (written by Frank Loesser in 1944) became the focus of controversy because of what is known as the “Me Too Movement.” Then, suddenly, the song was felt to be radioactive by many due to a perception by some that the lyrics portrayed a seduction. The controversy gained moment with the Me Too Movement and the news that a Canadian radio station banned it from airplay for a period of time. Last year Dean Martin’s daughter, Deana, voiced her perplexity at the sudden “concern” about the lyrics of the song. Christmas came and went, and we all thought the storm about the song had permanently blown over. It was recently announced that John Legend and Kelly Clarkson have re-recorded the Christmas classic with politically correct/Me Too sensitive lyrics. Ms. Martin has, again, commented regarding her dismay about the past and new controversies about her dad’s hit. Deana called me from her Beverly Hills home to discuss the hullaballoo. Starting on the subject of the “Baby It’s Cold Outside” controversy, she said: “Well, the whole thing is so funny, because I thought we were over all of this last when it was banned from, I think, a Cleveland radio station. I saw that on my iPhone or something. So I tweeted, ‘I think this is insane. You know, what do you think? This is crazy.’ And all of a sudden, it went viral. I mean, it was just nuts. People were calling me to do TV shows and radio shows all over. I just could not understand. It was just so bizarre to me that they were going to pull that song. “After I tweeted it and started doing all those radio shows, the song was put back onto all the radio shows and it went to number one. I had two hundred thousand texts and tweets and emails – positive ones. Nothing negative, which is really good. You know, it’s like, ‘You go, girl!’ “That was last year. And then, all of a sudden, I find out that John Legend has re-written the words – he changed the lyrics. I adore him. I think he’s a fantastic entertainer and musician. And Kelly Clarkson, she’s spectacular. What a voice and what a personality she has! But I thought it’s gone way too far with the P.C. police. “I’m all for the Me Too Movement. But I think that we’ve all gone insane. And when I think why on earth would he want to change the lyrics to a classic from 1944 – a Frank Loesser song? It won the Academy Award. That’s what I’m telling you. But I think what he did with changing the lyrics, he made it sexual when he said, ‘It’s your body, it’s your choice.’ I’m thinking, ‘Wait a minute.’ “To me, it was just preposterous that he would even do that. And I understand that it was written 60 years ago and there are different sensibilities now. But it still irks me that he’s changed the lyrics for just a fantastic, evergreen, classic holiday song. But I do understand what he wants and what he’s trying to do. And he’s a good guy. But when I think, ‘Why is he changing the lyrics to that fabulous song?’ It was perfect the way it is. He’s a good writer. He could write his own 16

song. He could do some Christmas song. So that’s how I feel. “People have asked me about what my dad would think. My dad was so cool and laidback. He wouldn’t have thought anything about this. He was, ‘Okay, whatever you want to do is fine.’ He was over all of that. S THE DAYS shorten and the weather turns chillier, absorbing vitamin D from the sun becomes more challenging. Why does that matter? Less vitamin D can lead to a weakened immune system, fatigue, joint pain, and even impaired wound healing. Essentially, vitamin D helps your whole system run better, from your digestive system to your nervous and circulatory systems. Vitamin D can help your body ward off diseases while also boosting your mood and helping to fight depression. It also enhances the body’s absorption of calcium, which helps form and maintain strong bones and aids in maintaining muscle strength, healthy body fat levels, and body tissue health. How can you make sure to get enough vitamin D as the season changes? Registered dietitian and nutritionist Dawn Jackson Blatner offers a few expert tips on healthy hacks for your diet: 1. Opt for fatty fish when eating seafood When you’re looking for a seafood option for meals or when dining out, choose the fattier types of fish such as salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines, and anchovies, as they are rich dietary sources of vitamin D. In addition, oysters and shrimp are also good sources of vitamin D. 2. Choose high-quality eggs with increased vitamin D content Eggs are a great option for vitamin D, but keep in mind that not all eggs are created equal. Mushroom & Onion Dutch Baby Prep Time: 40 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Yield: 6 servings Ingredients » 8 tablespoons butter » 1 medium onion, diced » 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced » 5 large Eggland’s Best eggs » 1 1/4 cup whole milk » 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour » 1/2 teaspoon salt » 1/4 teaspoon white pepper » 1 cup grated aged Gouda cheese » 2 tablespoons chopped fresh thyme » 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage Instructions Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large sauté pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat and cook for 2-3 minutes until melted and foamy. Add onions and cook, stirring for 2-3 minutes until they begin to soften. Add the herbs, then stir in the mushrooms and cook for another 3-5 minutes until they are browned and softened as well. Remove from heat. Put the Eggland’s Best eggs, milk, flour, salt, and pepper into a blender and blend at high speed for about a minute. Stop, scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula, and blend for another 30 seconds. Place the remaining 6 tablespoons of butter into a 12-inch cast iron skillet and put the pan into the oven. Wait until the butter is completely melted and bubbling, then carefully take the pan out and swirl the butter around to make sure the pan is coated. Spread the onions and mushrooms on the bottom of the cast iron skillet. Pour the egg and flour mixture on top. Finally, sprinkle cheese all over and put back into the oven for 20 minutes, until browned on top. The pancake will puff up as it bakes. When finished, take the Dutch baby out of the oven. You can scatter more sage and thyme across the top, if you desire. For a more decadent touch, melt a tablespoon of herb butter on top of the pancake as soon as it leaves the oven.

I have had patients asking me why their copay was what it was. I wanted to share a few things that I know about behind-the-scenes of retail pharmacy, as well as what you can do about it when you are charged an unexpected price. First, I recommend that a patient shop around until they find a pharmacist they can trust and stay there due to the dangers of duplicate therapies and drug interactions. If something costs a little more than you expected, talk with your pharmacist and make an appointment to sit down and talk about your situation. If you have government funded insurance, you are not eligible for most advertised drug discount cards that allow patients to pay a certain amount for their prescription if they use the drug card put out by the manufacturer. Most discount cards put out by manufacturers always have a limit on what they will pay. A card may advertise that the copay will be a certain amount, but it depends on the commercial insurance plan’s copay. In other words, if a patient has not met their deductible, they may end up paying the difference between the maximum amount the discount card pays and what the insurance company pays. If a patient is a cash patient, they are
sometimes not eligible for a drug discount card because eligibility criteria for the majority of manufacturer cards is that the patient must have commercial insurance. As far as free discount cards that you can print off the Internet, sometimes the price listed under each pharmacy is not correct. Free discount card companies do not set pharmacy prices. The price you pay is based on how much the pharmacy paid for the drug, and it can vary from each distributor. Most pharmacies do not match prices from wholesale businesses like Sam’s or Costco. Most of the time the price they advertise is part of being in a yearly subscription to their clubs. As far as being an independent pharmacist, we actually look for the cheapest prices as long as we can receive quality medications. We are not big corporations, and we choose to be where we are so we can honor our patients the way they deserve. Communication is key. You can call around and check prices all day long with the big chains, and you may even find a pharmacy that gives you the price that you are looking for. However, it is so important to sit down with the pharmacist you have and go over your medications and out-of-pocket cost. If not, you put yourself in possible danger by

Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame Announces “The Jump Off” – 1st Ever Global Championship THE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Hall of Fame (WBHOF) announced the launch of “The Jump Off,” the biggest and best showcase created for the world’s top women’s teams. Launching in May 2020, this international women’s basketball event will feature teams from 5th-10th grade competing across eight different regional brackets to arrive for the final showdown in Knoxville during the WBHOF Induction celebration in June 2020. The championship games will be played at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium and Coliseum and televised on a national sports network. “We are thrilled to share the values and mission of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame with the next generation of promising athletes,” said Dana Hart, Hall of Fame President. “This women’s basketball event, spanning multiple grades around the globe, will feature tomorrow’s basketball stars and leaders.” The road to Knoxville will begin with the two top teams at each grade level competing on a regional level to earn the coveted spot at the global championship. The eight regions are New England, Northeast, West, Gulf, 22

Midwest, Tennessee Valley, Texas, and International. Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival Brings Vibrant Spring Fun to the Smokies in 2020 New five-week event highlights theme park’s 35th anniversary season

I N T H E Great Smoky Mountains is about to get a little brighter thanks to Dollywood’s inaugural Flower & Food Festival, a vibrant new event that adds another touch of dazzling color to the natural beauty that already surrounds the award-winning theme park. Coinciding with the park’s 35th anniversary, the first new festival experience at Dollywood since 2006 immerses park guests in the splendor of spring flowers through creative and aromatic displays, as well as the freshest food flavors of the spring with delicious and mouth-watering Smoky Mountain cuisine selections. The five-week festival is slated for May 8 through June 14. Dollywood’s Dreamer-In-Chief Dolly Parton loved springtime in the Smoky Mountains as a child and continues to draw inspiration from the beauty of what she calls “God’s Coloring Book.” With nearly half-amillion plants and flowers throughout the park, it will be easy for guests to feel as if they are walking through those pages. “When I was just a little girl, spring was a wondrous time,” said Parton. “Everything came to life – flowers bloomed in the meadow near our house, and the Dogwood, red bud, and fruit trees blossomed with the sweetest smells. I imagined having my own special field of flowers that were a fragrant home to my favorite animal friends in the woods. Now my Dollywood becomes that special place

with everything made of flowers – I can’t wait to share it with everyone just in time for our 35th season!” Dollywood’s Flower & Food Festival brings Dolly’s dreams to life in an all-new way with floral displays that bloom in a kaleidoscope of colors. In partnership with internationally-acclaimed Mosaicultures flower sculpting team, a multitude of flowers come to life throughout Dollywood as Smoky Mountain turtles, raccoons, frogs, and black bears. Dolly’s rich influence through song comes alive in blooming topiary tributes to “I Will Always Love You” with a floral heart umbrella and to “Coat of Many Colors” with a brilliant butterfly and a marvelous scenic sculpture of her mother sewing the priceless garment. Just like Dolly, these topiaries are larger than life – measuring 10-15 feet tall – and each spring sculpture offers a variety of colors and flowers. The festival takes its blooms and brilliance throughout Dollywood, starting with photo opportunities before guests step foot through the turnstiles. Once in the park, the Showstreet area of Dollywood becomes a colorful shower of flowers – literally! Guests quickly find themselves under an “Umbrella Sky” with hundreds of multi-colored umbrellas dancing above their heads. “This gives all new meaning to one of my favorite sayings – ‘If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain,’” said Parton.
“With these umbrellas, it’s sure to be a sunshine kind of day no matter what!” Flit and Flutter, the colorful characters from Wildwood Grove, venture throughout the park for special meet and greet experiences and photo opportunities during this new event. Special “Instagramable” photo locations and interactive activities allow families to capture special memories that will live on long after the festival flowers bloom. The colorful splendor created by an artful array of flowers and plants is accented by the delicious dishes of spring’s freshest tastes for a mouth-watering festival of flavors. Dollywood’s team of culinary experts dug deep into the traditions of Southern and Smoky Mountain cuisine to plant tantalizing tastes sure to take root on the list of favorite foods for every festival visitor. Learning About Random Acts of Flowers

favorite questions to ask is, “How did you hear about Random Acts of Flowers?” For many, it was through a television, magazine, or newspaper story. For some, it was from our website (www.RAFKnoxville.org ), and for others, it was through word of mouth. But the most touching and impactful is when people first learn about us by having been personal recipients of a Random Acts of Flowers arrangement. Many times we hear that our visit was a wonderful, uplifting moment for the recipient during their hospital stay, or we hear from a family member that the time a Random Acts of Flowers volunteer spent with a loved one in an assisted living facility gave an emotional boost to the whole family. Sometimes there is an element of magic that comes along with the stories of recipients who received an arrangement that included a favorite flower or favorite color. During one delivery, a volunteer heard a
man’s voice in a room she was delivering to and thought he might be a veteran. She picked out an arrangement that had red, white, and blue flowers and a small American Flag in the arrangement, and she walked into the hospital room and asked the gentleman if he was a veteran – and he said yes! Somehow our flowers have a knack for finding their way in the hands of just the right recipient, and these moments of kindness are not soon forgotten! “Journey to Japan” at Children’s Museum Gala T HE CHILDREN’S MUSEUM
of Oak Ridge will “Journey to Japan” for its 18th annual Gala from 6 to 9:30 pm on Friday, December 6. The evening will celebrate Japanese life and culture, as well as Oak Ridge’s sister city friendship with Japan, while benefitting the Children’s Museum. The Gala evening will feature musical entertainment, fine dining, and auctions at the museum, located at 461 West Outer Drive in Oak Ridge. Guests are invited to dress in Japanese or cocktail attire. Frank Murphy, voted as Knoxville’s finest emcee by readers of Blank Newspaper in 2018, will serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies. Murphy is host of Scholars’ Bowl on East Tennessee PBS and co-host of Morning in the Mountains on the Mountain Fun Life streaming channel. He’s also a member of the comedy improv troupe Einstein Simplified, which performs Tuesday nights at Knoxville’s Scruffy City Hall. Guests will be greeted with a mural focusing on the Gala theme created by artist Gale Hinton. Take Out Thyme Catering, a familyowned business for 20 years, will prepare and serve an elegant dinner highlighting the Gala’s “Journey to Japan” theme. Oak Ridge and Naka, Japan, have been sister cities for 28 years, with international exchanges taking place aided by the Oak 28

MONTH, in celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Museum of Appalachia presented its first-ever “Heroes of Southern Appalachia” awards to General Carl Stiner and the late Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. The fireside reception hall overflowed with attendees eager to pay tribute to these two “heroes” who dedicated their lives to service. Deborah York, great-granddaughter of World War I hero Sgt. Alvin C. York and Executive Director of the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation, explained the impact General Stiner has had on all branches of our nation’s special forces, while United States Senator Lamar Alexander reflected on the life and legacy of Senator Baker. “We thought honoring those who truly embody the spirit of the Appalachian people and have fearlessly and selflessly served this region would be a wonderful way to commemorate this milestone anniversary,” said Elaine Irwin Meyer, Museum of Appalachia President. The criteria for choosing recipients included honoring a person(s) from the Southern Appalachian region who exemplifies the characteristics of perseverance, fortitude, self-reliance, and service. United States Army Four-Star General Carl Stiner from LaFollette, Tennessee, has had a lasting impact on all branches of U.S. military special forces. His 35-year career includes involvement in capturing the Achille Lauro terrorists, apprehending Panamanian Dictator Manuel Noriega, and 38

Karen Baker, Timothy Baker, Senator Lamar Alexander, Samuel Baker, Darek Baker, and Matthew Baker all special operations during Desert Storm, and he was the second Commander in Chief of the United States Special Operations. “General Stiner transformed special operations in our country by tearing down walls of inefficiency and building collaboration and cooperation that had never existed before,” said Deborah York. “He is a hometown hero who has had an enduring influence on our American military, as well as our nation’s security. He is as good a man as he was a soldier and has a heart for his community and his home state. We owe a debt of gratitude for General Stiner’s years of service and sacrifice to our great nation, and I am honored to present him with this award.” Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. grew up in Huntsville, Tennessee, or as he called it, “the center of the known universe.” The first popularly elected Republican senator in Tennessee history, he earned the nickname “The Great Conciliator” in his roles as Senate

General Carl Stiner minority and majority leader because of his reputation as a fair and thoughtful leader. His extensive public service, which also included roles as President Reagan’s chief of staff and U.S. Ambassador to Japan, earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “How fortunate we were to know, to be inspired by, and to learn from Tennessee’s favorite son and one of our country’s finest leaders, Howard Baker,” said Alexander. “The nation got to know him during the Watergate hearings. He then became the majority leader of the United States Senate, chief of staff for President Reagan, and President George W. Bush’s Ambassador to Japan. He began an era of two-party competition that has changed Tennessee politics permanently. By his eloquence and personality, Howard inspired a number of young men and women, including me, to join him in that endeavor. Howard made us Tennesseans look even better, and I cannot think of a more deserving person to receive the museum’s first-ever Heroes of Southern Appalachia Award.” As a non-profit, Smithsonian affiliated organization, the museum’s mission is to preserve the artifacts and culture of an earlier time for the benefit of future generations and to instill in the community – regionally, nationally, and internationally – a greater knowledge of and appreciation for Southern Appalachian heritage. A Christmas Perspective

N 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Thyroid Cancer. After a botched surgery, I was left without a voice for seven long months. I wish I could tell you I kept a great attitude, but the truth is I was desperate and depressed. In January 2013, some friends prayed over me that my voice would be restored, and that very day I received an answer. I went from a barely audible whisper to about 75% of my speaking voice. I can now talk to my family and friends and even on the phone. If I had simply woken from the surgery with a less than stellar voice, I would have been focused on the loss. But having come from nothing to 75% was an amazing gift. It gave me a new perspective, and for that I am grateful. When we began the Surface Doc company in 2008, the economy was in a recession.
Those first few months we nearly starved as we waited for the phone to ring. We had friends who brought us meals, and one of our first clients was a pizzeria who paid our company with pizza credit. I am not exaggerating to tell you that we ate pizza for a solid week – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The kids loved that week, but I couldn’t eat pizza for years after that. I’ll admit, I did do a bit of whining before my perspective was forced to shift to gratitude. We ended up coming through that season feeling loved and cared for by family and friends… and we know God sent us that pizza! Christmas is a season where we are particularly mindful of our blessings. As I reminisce over the last decade or so, it is obvious that the seasons of real personal growth (and faith!) have taken place during
particularly difficult experiences. I am reminded that the Lord CAN change any situation we find ourselves in. But, when the situation doesn’t change to our liking, we have an opportunity for growth and to realign our perspective with His. Our desire this season is to do a better job recognizing the Lord’s movement here in the middle – before the promise is fulfilled, before the promotion comes through, before the kids are on the path we desire for them. The middle is a difficult place for most of us, but I want to encourage you… that wherever you may find yourself, God’s grace is sufficient to carry you. And me. It is our heartfelt prayer that each of us feels the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and His blessings that surround us. Merry Christmas from Surface Doc.

Each walk is guided by a naturalist who can answer your questions about what you are seeing, ongoing projects, future programs, and more. This is a perfect way to get to know more about Ijams Nature Center. Please bring weather appropriate clothing. Trails are dirt with some elevation changes and have low accessibility for strollers or persons with mobility concerns. Dogs are NOT allowed on any Ijams hike. UT Gardens’ Plant of the Month: Indoor Citrus BY MARGEAUX EMERY, SENIOR EDITOR/WRITER, UTIA MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS
ORANGES, LEMONS,
and limes are members of the genus Citrus, which is part of the rue family. The fruit is native to southern Asia, Malaysia, and Australia. Humans began moving citrus from these regions during some of the earliest migrations of ancient times. The fruits’ history, in fact, is every bit as colorful as its skin. Romans cultivated citrus trees across their territory. Traders on the Silk Road bartered in them, and Spanish conquistadores brought them to Florida. George Washington grew them at Mount Vernon. You can enjoy a citrus tree of your own in just the way our first president did by growing the plant in a container. Bring the pot indoors well before the first frost and return the plant to the outdoors in spring after the weather is reliably above 50 degrees. Whether you choose an orange, lemon, or lime tree, citrus offer the excitement of watching tiny fruit grow and mature. Plus, citrus blossoms offer a heavenly fragrance. The following varieties do well as indoor citrus grown in pots. Look for them at area plant nurseries and garden centers: » Improved ‘Meyer’ lemon (Citrus x meyeri ‘Improved’) is a luscious lemon-orange hybrid with a very thin skin and sweeter pulp than other types of lemons. The plant has dark, shiny leaves. » Calamondin (Citrofortunella microcarpa or Citrus madurensis) is grown largely as an ornamental because its small, round, orange fruit are sour. ‘Peters’ is an eye-catching variegated form. » ‘Trovita’ orange (Citrus sinensis) grows medium-small, flavorful fruit that ripens quickly. The plant often is alternate bearing. » Kaffir lime (Citrus hystrix) is an exotic citrus prized for its fragrant leaves that are used in Thai and other Southeast Asian cooking. It does produce a small, bumpy green fruit. Kaffir trees have striking foliage where one leaf appears to grow from another. Care Citrus need quick-draining, somewhat acidic soil. Cactus mix works well. Use a well-draining, deep pot to help stabilize the tree, and size pots up as the plant grows. Keep soil moist but not sodden. When the tree is indoors, less water will be needed because growth slows. Adding humidity to the dry indoor air, though, is important. Mist regularly and consider using humidity trays or a small humidifier. Citrus trees need 8 to 12 hours of sun a day. Choose a spot outdoors that’s out of strong winds. A site near a heat source, such as a brick wall, is beneficial. Indoors, place the tree in a sunroom or the sunniest window you have, keeping it out of drafts. Use of grow lights will extend short winter days, and the added light 44

is important for fruit production. Expect some leaf and fruit drop to occur as the plant adjusts to being indoors. Once back outside, though, the tree will rebound quickly. Acclimate the tree across a week or more each time you move it indoors and out. In fall, first move the tree from sun to dappled light, then to shade. Reverse the process in spring. Citrus are heavy feeders. Specialized citrus/avocado fertilizers can be found, yet any all-purpose fertilizer with at least a 2-1-1 ratio can be used, as can fertilizers sold for acid-loving plants. Choose a granular, slow release formulation, although diluted soluble fertilizers can be applied when the plant is actively growing. While citrus are generally healthy, they do attract a few pests. Spider mites often appear in late winter. Spray them with a water solution to which a squirt of dishwashing soap has
been added. Heavier infestations may require horticultural soap or oil. Once the tree is outdoors, keep watch for scale. Ants can aggravate scale infestations. Lower that risk by use of ant traps or by applying a 3- to 4-inch band of sticky insect barrier such as Tanglefoot® around the trunk near the tree’s base. The occasional aphid or two can be brushed away by hand. The UT Gardens include plant collections located in Knoxville, Jackson, and Crossville. N O T H E R Y E A R is coming to an end. How are things in your yard? This year was pretty brutal on some plants, so you need to walk around and make notes about what did well and what didn’t. I know that most of us are not going to do a lot of yard work this month, so I’m going to do what I traditionally do and tell you how to take care of your holiday plants. Amaryllis Amaryllis can be purchased as loose bulbs, in a kit, or as blooming plants. If you get a bulb, plant it into a good potting soil in a sturdy pot that won’t fall over when the plant gets tall. I usually leave 1/3 of the bulb above the soil, but it can be planted up to the neck. Push the soil firmly down into the pot so the bulb is anchored. Whether planting or buying a plant, place your amaryllis in a warm spot where it gets direct sunlight. Water sparingly until the stem appears, then slowly increase the amount of water to once a week or so. After the flowers emerge, turn the plant frequently to keep it from leaning. Staking may be necessary. Christmas Cactus The Christmas cactus and its cousins are
very low maintenance, but there are a few tricks to growing them: 1. They are tropical cactus, not desert cactus. They don’t like hot afternoon sun or to get bone dry. They do like lots of light and won’t bloom well if kept in too dark a spot. 2. The bloom cycle is triggered by cool temperatures and longer periods of darkness. Keep them away from heat sources and give them 13 hours of darkness per day. Once the blooms have finished, let them rest for a bit by withholding water for 5-6 weeks. When you see new growth, it’s time to resume regular watering. If it’s been in the same pot for more than 3-4 years or if it’s very crowded, you need to up-pot. Don’t worry if you accidentally break some pieces off because they’re easy to propagate. Call us if you need instructions. The main enemy of the Christmas cactus is overwatering. Make sure your pot has good drainage, and only water it every couple of weeks during the winter. Cut Christmas Trees and Greenery The number one rule for cut trees is to know when the tree was cut! If you don’t cut it yourself, ask. Some of the trees that go to box stores, warehouse stores, and

grocery stores were cut in October for the sake of logistics. Rule two: After you pick your tree, have the seller do a fresh cut or do it yourself when you get home. Immediately put the tree in water and do NOT let it dry out. If it does, the sap seals the cut and it’s no longer able to take up the water. Fresh trees can drink up to a gallon the first day, so don’t use one of those wimpy little stands. Rule three: Keep your tree away from heat sources as much as possible. Some people will recommend various additives to help your tree stay fresh longer, but most experts say that water is fine on its own. As for wreaths and garland, they will do best if they’re sprayed with an anti-transpirant or misted with water regularly. They are also happiest if they get some shade from hot afternoon sun. Poinsettia Poinsettias are considered plant divas, but it isn’t their fault. They are tropical plants that humans have decided to use for decoration during winter! If you want to keep them alive, follow these guidelines: 1. Always buy from a greenhouse or garden center. The box stores and groceries simply don’t have the experience to handle a poinsettia. 2. Pick a nicely colored plant with healthy looking green leaves. 3. Do NOT purchase a plant that’s already in a plastic sleeve. This camouflages damage and creates a fungal breeding ground around the plant. The plant should be placed in a sleeve for transportation, however. Remove the sleeve when you get home by cutting it off or pulling it from the bottom. Never try to pull it over the top. 4. Do NOT expose the poinsettia to cold temperatures. Anything below 50 will damage it. Freezing temperatures will kill it in less than a minute. Keep it away from drafts or windows and doors. 5. The bracts are very fragile because of the size of the blooms. They should be put where they won’t be bumped or brushed against. 6. The poinsettia is not poisonous, but some people (and animals) may have a reaction to the sap, so keep them away from pets and children. 7. Water the plant when the soil feels dry. I find it easiest to take mine out of the wrap and put it in the sink to water it. After it drains, I put it back in the wrap. Don’t let water stand in the wrap because the poinsettia is prone to root rot. Don’t forget to keep bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full, and stop in and see us during the winter for any garden needs! From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit is Back at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center

Model Train Exhibit is now open, and it is steaming us towards the holidays. During the past months, the members of the Maryville Model Railroad Club have been hard at work putting the intricate details on the exhibits and are now enjoying the reactions of the guests of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center in Townsend. “The new additions that the club has created really help tell the story of Townsend, as well as bringing the holiday spirit to East Tennessee,” said Logan Hull, Director of Special Events at the Heritage Center. “We are so glad that the Heritage Center is becoming a part of folks’ holiday traditions. With the addition of our Hands-On Discovery Zone for kids, families get to enjoy their time together and make new memories!” “It has taken a lot of highly detailed work and a great deal of time to complete, but the end product is worth the effort,” said Allan Gartner, President of the Maryville Model Railroad Club. The MMRC has volunteered hundreds of hours to create the exhibit and to make sure everything is running smoothly. Some of the new models that have been added to the exhibit include the Kinzel Springs Hotel, a replica of the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, and the Little River Saw Mill. Each day that the trains are running, a knowledgeable member of the MMRC will be on-site to answer questions and to show how they operate the trains. Additionally, with the opening of the Hands-On Discovery Zone, families get to join 52

in on the fun of trains. Specially designed with young children in mind, the Discovery Zone has multiple train tables where children get to experiment, build, and show off their creativity in an area just their size! “As a teaching museum, letting kids be kids and being hands-on is very important, and by offering the Discovery Zone, we hope that a love of history and trains will be instilled,” said Hull. “We have supplied the track, trains, and wooden building logs, so bring out your Junior Engineers!” “Letting my children play while also learning about the history of the area is an amazing way to spend the day,” said Jennifer Bowen, Maryville resident. “I majored in history at Maryville College, so this is especially meaningful to our family, and we love coming out to the Heritage Center.” The Smoky Junction Model Train Exhibit and the Hands-On Discovery Zone are up and running on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through January 5th. Admission to the exhibit is included in the museum admission ($8 adults, $6 seniors and children 6 and up). It can also be purchased separately for only $4 for ages 6 and up. The experience is free to the members of the Heritage Center and to children 5 and under. Each year Knox Heritage and the East Tennessee Preservation Alliance recognize outstanding persons, projects, and organizations working to preserve our heritage for future generations. This year’s award winners were recognized during a special ceremony at the Bijou Theater on November 14th. The event was sponsored by Home Trust Bank. Mayor Madeline Rogero was presented with the Partner in Preservation Award acknowledging her leadership in developing the City of Knoxville’s Preservation Fund. The Fund has had a noticeable impact in several neighborhoods within the city. Mayor Rogero presented the City of Knoxville Mayor’s Award to Ignite Solutions LLC for the restoration of the Keeton Jewelers Building in Burlington. The Knox County Mayor’s Award was presented to the Town of Farragut for restoration of the Campbell Station Inn. The town of Farragut purchased the house and property in 2013, and it will become the centerpiece of a new park. The Spirit of Kristopher Award was presented to Dianna and Peter Osicky for restoration of the General John T. Wilder House, a National Register property located at 2027 Riverside Drive. The 1904 home had fallen into a severe state of disrepair during the last 20 years. Kyle Lang received the Volunteer of the Year Award. Kyle has been an exceptional volunteer on the Knox Heritage Special Events Committee for the past five years, supporting our organization with her time, talents, and service. WBIR was presented with the Media Award. Elizabeth Sims and Leslie Ackerson are the producers for the station’s Abandoned Places digital-first series. The series explores Tennessee’s historic buildings that have been left behind. Smee + Busby Architects garnered the Adaptive Reuse Award for their renovation of the 1930 Marble City United Methodist Church on Sutherland Avenue for their offices. Millie and Elder Brown received the Stewardship Award for Craiglen, the historic home they purchased in 2018. The Preservation Service Award went to Steve Cotham for his extensive time as a commissioner

T’S HARD TO BELIEVE that next
year marks the 50th year since The Beatles broke up, each going their own creative ways. Since the break-up, there’s been a plethora of books, movies, compilation albums, and documentaries. Someone who was there pretty much from the get-go is the legendary Peter Asher. For those of you who don’t know who Peter is, he is the “Peter” of the ’60s British duo, Peter and Gordon. Their first big hit as a song was “A World Without Love,” written by Paul McCartney, who happened to be engaged at the time to Peter’s sister, actress Jane Asher. Peter later moved into artist management, with people like James Taylor and Linda Ronstadt among his clients. He has also been a record label executive and prolific record producer for a wide range of artists such as Cher, 10,000 Maniacs, Andrew Gold, and J.D. Southern. If you’re a SiriusXM subscriber, you may have caught Peter’s show, From Me to You, on the Beatles Channel (channel 18). When he’s not on the radio, he’s performing shows with Jeremy Clyde (of Chad & Jeremy). Amid all of this, Peter has written an interesting and intriguing book entitled The Beatles from A to Zed. The book is a natural off shoot from his satellite radio program. In it, he shares his reflections into a unique alphabetical journey through some of the Beatles’ songs that happen to start with each letter. He spotlights recurring themes within the songs, talks about the instruments used, and other interesting factoids behind and about the songs. I chatted with Peter by phone as he was working on some advance recordings of his radio show. He shared what the advance buzz was on his book. “Apparently people seem to be liking it,” he said. “There have been a few advanced reviews that have been very positive, so I don’t know. The book world is new to me. I’ve got some

friends who are authors, but I’ve never had a book out before. So it’s a different process. And it’s fascinating. But apparently they tell me everything is going very positively and that the reaction, so far, is good. So we shall wait and see. “I love that it rambles quite freely. But it’s not, in any sense, an encyclopedia or meant to be any sort of a definitive reference book. I think the description of it is alphabetical mystery tour, which was the thought. It is quite apt in the sense that I’d sort of follow a similar idea with my radio show, follow the story wherever it led me. And use the alphabet as a very rough format. It doesn’t use the alphabet for just song titles, but people and places and musical instruments and musical styles and all kinds of stuff. It’s a very freeform encyclopedia. “So as far as what I hope people get out of it, I hope they’re entertained by it, that they’re amused by the passage of time. But I also hope that maybe they listen to the music with a new appreciation; that it (the music) is actually brilliant how The Beatles were and are.” What is the biggest misconception of the Beatles? “I think because it ended in some arguments and anger, perhaps people give undue weight to that part of the story and forget how incredibly well they got along for so many years,” said Peter. “They were an incredibly well-blended band. It was the perfect storm both musically and personality wise and everything. They fit together so extraordinarily well when I did have
an opportunity to watch them work together in the studio or on a project or whatever. I think the misconception is that, like all bands, they did end with some arguing and some anger. But I think one forgets the extent to which they were genuinely cohesive, coherent, and a creative whole for a long time. And that’s how they created this body of work that is unequaled in the history of rock and roll.” Concluding our chat, I closed our conversation by asking how Peter hopes to be remembered and what he hopes his legacy will be. “Maybe one is supposed to worry about one’s legacy,” he said. “But other than leaving my family well and my wife and daughter and all of that, I don’t really have any post-death ambitions, nor do I have any belief that there is any such thing as post-death. So as far as I’m concerned, you’re dead and it’s all over and that’s it. Alliance proudly presents its 2019 Members Show, the largest annual exhibition of local artists in the Greater Knoxville area. The fresh mix of two- and three-dimensional works created within the last two years encompasses a wide variety of media such as oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, photography, fine craft, sculpture, ceramics, fiber, and more from regional artists who are all individual members of the Arts & Culture Alliance, which serves and supports a diverse community of artists, arts organizations, and cultural institutions. Most of the works in the 2019 Members Show are for sale and may be purchased through the close of the exhibition. An opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on December 6 from 5 to 9 pm with complimentary hors d’oeuvres. The First Friday reception features dances presented by Circle Modern Dance and Knoxville Argentine Tango Society and music by the Knoxville Gay Men’s Chorus. The WIVK Santa Claus Parade starts at 7 pm along Gay Street and passes in front of the Emporium. “We always look forward to this exhibition as a highlight and culmination of a year’s productivity on the part of Knoxville’s diverse and enthralling artist community,” said Liza Zenni, Executive Director for the Arts & Culture Alliance. Individual members of the Alliance participate locally and regionally in gallery exhibitions, art festivals, sculpture trails, weekend shows, studio tours, and public murals. Some of the members are fulltime artists, while others have day jobs and create on evenings and weekends. Some Alliance members include art professors with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Carson-Newman University, Maryville College, Pellissippi State, Roane State, and Walters State. Others are teachers within Knox and surrounding county’s elementary, middle, and high schools.
