A big Thank You to them both, as we truly could not continue this publication without them! Beautiful Plant-based Products That Make Your Skin Happy

I

N SEPTEMBER of this year,

Knoxville got its own Soap Makery - Buff City Soap. Known for it’s fresh, handcrafted soaps made daily in-store by local Makers, Buff City Soap has more than 25 unique and customizable scents across dozens of handcrafted soap products, including its famous soap bars, bath bombs, foaming hand soap, and even laundry soap. Located in the Turkey Creek Pinnacle at 11277 Parkside Drive in Suite 516, Buff City Soap has created a higher quality alternative to commercial soap that is free from harsh chemicals, detergents, animal fats, and sulfates and full of nourishing plant-based goodies to make your skin happy! With every

6

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2020

product being made in a bakery-like setting called a Soap Makery, customers are able to watch their products being handcrafted right in front of their eyes - giving them the opportunity to customize any product while seeing the whole making process live. “After watching Buff City grow from the ground up and becoming faithful customers ourselves, we knew it was time to get involved with the brand,” states Brittany Vick, co-owner, “We cannot wait to help grow Buff City Soap’s presence in Tennessee, and we are confident that the Turkey Creek Pinnacle community will absolutely love our array of delightfully scented, handcrafted products.” Jessica Pace, also co-owner, echoes that sentiment

by saying “Buff City Soap offers quality, handmade soap products that I believe in and stand by 100%!” Owned and operated here in Knoxville by partners Jamie Mason, Jessica Pace, Vince Sartori, Michelle Stokes, and Brittany Vick, they plan to greatly expand their Buff City Soap locations during the next few years. A location just opened in Kingsport, Tennessee, on November 13th, and they plan to open another location in Powell, Tennessee, in early December. Everything Knoxville was able to talk to Brittany Vick and Jessica Pace about Buff City Soap’s Knoxville presence and why they feel this unique store is so important to this area and others.

BV: Each bar of Buff City soap is handcrafted in what we call our Soap Makeries. Every soap item sold here is made here, where you can see exactly what goes into the products you put on your body. We love that we can provide our customers with an experiential shopping experience. JP: Our mission is to create handmade products that are full of skin nourishing, plant-based ingredients - no harsh chemicals. Buff City products are fresh and made in our Soap Makery daily with ingredients you can pronounce. Get any product with any of our signature scents. Once you go Buff, you’ll never go back! EK: What exactly is a Soap Makery? BV: Our store allows shoppers to experience the soap making process and have input in the type of skin care products they want to use. With as much fun as it is to make soap, we couldn’t keep it all to ourselves! Our Soap Makery offers co-creation opportunities for all ages and all occasions. Any day that you pop into the Buff City Soap Makery, we’ll be right here creating or customizing a soap,

body butter, laundry soap, and so much more. JP: Just pick out your favorite scent, and we’ll show you how we make the magic happen! We might need your help drizzling the final touch on some bath bombs or tossing fragrance into a batch of laundry soap. Be sure to bring the kiddos along - we always put on a good show to entertain them while you shop! EK: Will you tell our readers more about your signature scents and ingredients? BV: We have a bit of a “mad lab” stocked with ingredients like gardenia petals, lemon zest, hemp seed oil, shea butter, charcoal, and tea tree oil. Even our body scrubs are squeaky clean with natural exfoliants like chopped loofah bits, crushed walnut shells, and poppy seeds. JP: As far as our signature scents go, our Narcissist soap is one of our most beloved fragrances - it smells like Peachwood & Me Time! With notes of peaches, raspberries, and patchouli sandalwood, Narcissist scents combine to create the most wonderful aroma! BV: What you will never see in our products continued ....

EK: Why did you decide to start this particular business in the Knoxville area? JP: Brittany and I are both East Tennessee natives with a passion for success and a heart for our community! With more than 20 years combined professional experience in the health and wellness industries, we quickly recognized a unique opportunity with Buff City Soap. Founded in 2013, Buff City Soap is on a mission to create handmade personal care and home products free of harsh ingredients and full of plant-based nutrients. BV: Can I get on a soapbox for a minute? Most of the “trusted brands” we’re all used to washing with are made with detergents, chemicals, and tallow, which is just another name for cow fat (umm… gross). Sulfates, artificial detergents, and parabens can cause irritation, trigger allergies, and have other unpleasant side effects. That doesn’t exactly say “refreshing shower” to us. So our aim was to find an alternative. The answer Buff City Soap! EK: What makes Buff City Soap different from other soap shops?

are artificial detergents, surfactants, dyes, or other harsh chemicals. We have our fragrances specifically manufactured for us to ensure they are free of phthalates, parabens, and formaldehyde containing /forming ingredients. You can customize your products with the scent (or non-scent!) of your choice and the ingredients that you prefer. The possibilities are endless! EK: Describe some of your unique products and their benefits. JP: In addition to our natural, plant-based bars of soap, we carry a wide selection of other personal care products - from bath bombs to shower fizzies, body butters to face creams, shave soaps to beard oils. Our products let you put the best ingredients on your skin every day. BV: We also carry scent customizable laundry soap that is free of harsh chemicals only the good stuff! - and proudly handcrafted here in the U.S. It keeps clothes soft and smelling fresh while preventing that starchy feeling that some detergents can cause. Once you use Buff City Laundry Soap, you will never

want to go back to anything else! EK: Are you offering any special seasonal products for the holidays? BV: Mr. and Mrs. Claus aren’t the only ones preparing for the holidays ahead. We’ve been busy dreaming up new festive scents to share with our favorite Buff City elves, too. Good, clean holiday fun awaits you this year, friends! Try our Candy Cane Forest soap with the scent combination of peppermint leaves, sugar, and eucalyptus. We added a sprinkle of glitter on top to bring you into the season with a bit of shine! JP: Our Cinnamon Spice scented soap may inspire you to break out the cookie cutters, while our The Perfect Gift scented soap reminds us of holiday gatherings with notes of patchouli, musk, citrus, and vanilla! BV: Feeling festive yet? Break out the tinsel and head on over to our seasonal soaps section to browse these goodies yourself! Pair them with a bath bomb or soap scrubby for a complete Buff City gift set, and you’ll check everyone off your list in no time. JP: And, as always, feel free to order online

Buff City Soap has recently created a new soap called “Birthday Song,” which gets its name from the Centers for Disease Control’s recommendation of singing the “Happy Birthday Song” to yourself twice while washing your hands with warm water to safely clean your hands. For each bar of Birthday Song Soap that is sold, Buff City Soap is donating $1 to local and national Covid-19 relief efforts.

and take advantage of our safe curbside pickup. EK: How can interested customers learn more about your business? BV: Your can find Buff City Soap at www. buffcitysoap.com or stop in and visit our Turkey Creek store - just follow your nose!

ESIGNER GARAGES, a subsidiary of Chris McKenry’s award-winning business Closets by McKenry, is now open and offers homeowners the opportunity to expand and beautify their living space using the most underutilized room in the house. This is Knoxville’s first garage showroom featuring the hottest home decor trend: Customized garages. “The garage segment in the closet and storage industry has grown into its own in recent years,” said Chris McKenry. “Today, garages are used for many functions besides just storage and parking the car.” Plenty of Potential Man caves, entertainment spots, home gyms, and hobby hubs are just a few of the new uses for garage spaces. “It’s become an extension of the home; a place where activities happen,” said McKenry. De-cluttering and re-purposing inside the house has made storage in the garage a must, and homeowners are discovering that functionality can be blended with style in modern garage décor. Clean and Classy Flooring When making your garage more livable, work from the bottom up by giving concrete floors an epoxy-finished facelift. Holiday Pet Safety Tips

I

T’S THE HAPPIEST time of the year: Christmas and New Years - after 2020, aren’t we all ready for a joyful holiday season? OUR BEST TIP: While decorating your home, lessen stress by arranging doggy daycare at Ms. C’s - your dog will have a blast, and you will not be tripping over him! Decorating safety precautions: » Were you aware that tree water can be toxic? Make a lid to cover the opening, then secure with clips. » Fallen tree needles can be eaten - not good for internal organs - choose artificial if possible. » Avoid tinsel, foil garland, and artificial snow that can contain toxic chemicals and cause damage and blockages if ingested. » Wire ornament hooks can cut paws - bend tightly around branches so they don’t fall off. » Hide electrical cords so they don’t become chew toys - in paper tubes, under the tree skirt, or inside a box disguised as a package. During colder months: » Prevent frostbite on pup’s ears, tail, and feet by shortening their length of

time outside. » After walks when it’s icy, rinse and dry dog ’s feet so pads don’t chafe - soften pads with petroleum jelly to prevent tiny cuts and cracks. » When out, use a doggy sweater to keep them warm and dry. Back in the house, put blankets and pads on wood, tile, and cement floors, because floors can get mighty cold! » Remember that outdoor fresh air and exercise is still key to good health! Make happier, healthier holidays by keeping your pets in mind. Thank you for your continued support, and we wish you amazing holidays! To set up daycare or boarding, visit www.MsCsBedandBiscuits.com and click “Book A Reservation.” We look forward to pampering and loving your fourlegged kids!

HE GROWTH of Random Acts of Flowers since its beginning in 2008 has been quite remarkable. During the past 12 years, Random Acts of Flowers has delivered more than 130,000 bouquets of upcycled, re-purposed flower arrangements to individuals in healthcare facilities here in the Greater Knoxville area. With a staff of just two full-time employees and one part-time employee, the only way Random Acts of Flowers can create and deliver this many personal moments of kindness is thanks to its dedicated, funloving, and hard-working volunteer base. In 2020, even with the difficulties that we all have faced, Random Acts of Flowers is still up and running. This year, the volunteers put more than 6,000 hours into creating and delivering 11,000 flower arrangements and personal moments of kindness. The volunteers perform a variety of activities: Some collect flower donations from grocery stores, florists, and events around the area; some sort and prepare the flowers; and some repurpose them into beautiful individual bouquets. Volunteers come to Random Acts of Flowers for a variety of reasons: Some volunteer to enjoy the commradery of being with others that enjoy giving back to the 12

uncertainty of the economy and stock market has millions of Americans worried that their retirement could be rocky and unstable. Yvonne® Marsh, CFP , CPA When the stock market is roaring, it’s easy enough to believe that potential gains will continue to fund a stable retirement. But when the stock market becomes wobbly and unpredictable, current and future retirees start to ask themselves: Will my income in retirement be reliable? If you’re in the critical period of five years before through ten years after retirement, you might be worried about maintaining your income during times like these. The market and economy teeter back and forth, and you’re concerned about being caught on the downside - right when you need the money. You might be asking yourself: » Is there anything I can do to help stabilize my cash flow, even if my investments are fluctuating? » How do I handle the uncertain future without giving up too much? » Will my spouse be able to enjoy a steady stream of cash flow when I’m gone? Here are 3 reliable ways to steady your income: 1. Social Security is the biggest source of government-guaranteed, inflation-adjusted, lifetime income you’ll have in retirement, but much of the available information is contradictory, confusing, and downright incorrect. Fortunately, there are still decisions you can make to boost your Social Security payout as much as you possibly can. 2. Though many Americans no longer have access to pension plans, some do. Pensions can be a critical component to help provide steady retirement income if you have access to one. Understanding how to potentially maximize your benefits is key to optimizing this key source of income. 3. Transitioning your portfolio from the “building phase” to the “retirement phase” is critical to creating your stable income stream. Fortunately, there are many strategies that don’t fluctuate just because the stock market does. Including these assets for a portion of your portfolio can help steady it, even when markets or the economy are teetering on the edge. Don’t allow stock market uncertainty to destabilize your retirement income. We can help you discover ways to balance chaotic market conditions with a more reliable stream of income through the turbulent times ahead. Visit our website and download your free guide on this topic or give us a call to learn more.

Assisted Living vs Independent Senior Living

A

S YOU or your loved one ages, the

question of care begins to come to the forefront. How much daily care does the elder adult in your life require? And how do you find the appropriate senior housing to fit their needs in a respectful, dignified setting? Determining whether an assisted living facility is the correct path, or if an independent senior living facility is the suitable choice, is a good place to start. Assisted Living Assisted living facilities focus on helping residents with the activities of daily life. Some residents may require assistance with personal hygiene, mobility, medication, and even eating. Staff members are trained to offer this level of supervision and support, and some facilities have skilled nursing and medical services on-site. Active Senior Living Community In most cases, an active adult community provides minimal hands-on care by facility staff. If you or your seniors are in good health and are excited about a burden-free lifestyle, then an independent living facility would be your choice. This type of facility offers freedom from the responsibilities that come with home ownership along with the benefit of socialization with other seniors. As an independent senior community, Parkview Senior Living provides private apartments with access to multiple common areas, on-site dining, housekeeping/laundry services, weekly events and activities, building security, and with staff on premises 24/7 - peace-of-mind. While they don’t have on-site medical care, pill maintenance and other services are available. With the goal of making their residents’ lives easier with fewer responsibilities, Parkview also provides opportunities for socialization, exercise, and a sense of community. Which Community is Right for You? If you or your seniors are struggling to manage day-to-day needs, then assisted living is likely the right choice. If you’re an active senior, still able to care for your daily needs, and you’d like to connect with other active seniors, then an independent senior living community is your best bet.

Give the Gift of Prevention This Season Reap the Benefits of Healthier Water While Evading Costly Plumbing Issues B Y D AV I D B R E W S T E R , O W N E R O F AQ U A C L E A R WAT E R SY S T E M S , L LC

WHILE OUR HOLIDAY

gatherings may look different this year, it doesn’t change how much we care about the comfort of our family and friends. If you’re hosting, there are those stressors like deep cleaning and buying enough Christmas chocolates for the kids’ stockings. (And who are we kidding, adults’ stockings, too!) And if you’re traveling, logistics can be a real headache. But there’s one potentially hidden Grinch-like stressor I’d like to identify and solve before it becomes a major issue: That problem is pinhole leaks in your pipes. There are a few root causes of pinhole leaks. Chlorine in water is corrosive and reacts with copper to create a chemical compound: Copper Chloride. This compound can slowly attack pipes from the inside, resulting in those tiny, but destructive, pinhole leaks. Also, hard water - an abundance of calcium or magnesium like we have here in East Tennessee - can erode copper if a hot water recirculation pump is installed. I’ve heard pinhole leaks can become a huge pain - thankfully, not from personal experience, but from our clients. We’ve encountered

countless stories of massive flooding, ripping out ruined drywall, hidden mold lurching behind walls, and $10K-20K re-plumbing jobs due to these leaks. The sad part is most people think there is no repair alternative for old pipes except to completely gut the plumbing system. Fortunately, we have been able to save many clients from needing to turn their home into a job site by simply fixing the water that travels through those old pipes. The last thing any of us wants is to have holiday gatherings ruined by unexpectedly flooding or to return from travel to a horrible surprise. Aqua Clear’s Kinetico Water Systems remove the chlorine, chloramines, and the hardness that can harm copper pipes. We then add a special filter that re-coats and restores copper plumbing from the years of damage. After installing hundreds of Kinetico Systems to fix our clients’ pinhole leak issues, we can say with 100% certainty that it works. We’ve been saving our valued clients from costly repairs by investigating their pipes before there is a problem. Not only does this save their indoor plumbing, they also reap the

benefits of installing a Kinetico whole house water filtration system - healthier drinking water, smoother hair, softer skin, as well as extending the life of their appliances. At Aqua Clear Water Systems, we are so confident in our turn-key pinhole leak prevention system that we will refund your investment if it doesn’t stop your pinhole leak problem. Give us a call or text 865-986-4234 to schedule your FREE pinhole leak assessment, and get a jump start on ensuring the best experience for your holiday guests this season and for all the seasons to come!

ITNESS TOGETHER is perfectly

positioned to serve clients during Tennessee’s economic reopening phase, and here’s why: » Fitness Together works with clients on an appointment only basis. We practice a high degree of control in keeping our associates and trainers who may be ill out of the studio. » We only allow two trainers and no more than two to four clients to exercise in our facility at the same time. Each client has their own private training suite, and all equipment used during the session is cleaned and disinfected after each use. » For those still not ready to exercise outside of your own home, perhaps because you or someone you live with is immunocompromised, we will continue to offer LIVE Virtual Training through Zoom or FaceTime meetings. Here are testimonials from several Fitness Together clients that have taken advantage of our Virtual Training sessions: “Andrew, we just finished our third virtual workout. I can always count on you to give me a great, challenging workout. These sessions are almost like being there with you and certainly the best thing I can do right now for my health and happiness. Thank you - it’s about as close to normal life as we can get!” - Karen P. “My virtual FaceTime workout was great! I’m so pleased that I can continue a quality workout no matter where I am. It helped me emotionally, as well as physically. Thanks to my trainer Mac and the FT team!” - Nancy C. “That was one of the best workouts I’ve ever had! Thanks for the virtual “Get ‘Er Done” workout! See ya tomorrow in my family room!” - Dee Dee Brogan At this time, we wish to thank our clients for their continued support and encouragement. We want you to know that the safety of our clients and associates is our first priority and that we remain fully committed to helping you achieve and maintain the healthiest lifestyle possible.

ID YOU KNOW many of us spend more than 90% of our lives indoors? As winter approaches and the days get shorter, Personal Space Construction is frequently asked about the different ways to bring additional sunlight in to make our clients’ homes lighter and brighter. In addition to acting as a natural disinfectant by reducing harmful bacteria, sunlight is essential to our well-being, and the health benefits are many, including boosting vitamin D, warding off seasonal depression, and improving productivity. The “sunshine vitamin,” vitamin D - an important nutrient that prevents bone loss, reduces the risk of heart disease, weight gain, and various cancers - can only be absorbed through our skin with the help of sunlight. Thankfully, it doesn’t discriminate based on whether you get your sunlight indoors or outdoors. Those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a very real mood disorder, can be strongly affected by the lack of sufficient periods of natural light. And regulation

24

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2020

of our circadian rhythms of wake and sleep intervals can also be altered by our exposure to natural sunlight. Fortunately, there are quite a few options for ways in which natural light can be let in to our homes. If budgeting allows, you could install additional windows or replace solid exterior doors with windowed ones. Adding ceiling skylights or solar tubes is a budget-friendly way to increase your

interior sun exposure. Even the selection of your interior finishes and paint colors, along with well-placed mirrors, can bring more healthful sunlight in to a space. With so many choices, it is often beneficial to have a professional help you decide which solutions are best for your home. As an experienced architect and licensed ge ne ra l c ont ra c tor, Pe rso nal Space Construction is well qualified to help you evaluate the best solutions for bringing more light in to your house to create a healthier, happier, more comfortable, and more sustainable home. From an interior design standpoint, the lighter and brighter the room, the more comfortable and inviting it is. So if you are wanting to increase your home’s value while increasing you and your family’s health benefits, contact us for sustainable home design ideas that focus on maximizing natural light.

Storage Wars: Don’t Live It in Your House W HILE YOU MAY enjoy watching the TV show Storage Wars, it’s definitely not fun to be living a storage war! Are you constantly battling for space and organization to store things, especially in your closets - piles of shoes on the floor, shirts and sweaters thrown chaotically on a shelf, and that jumbled mess of scarves and belts hung on a spare hanger? And we all have clothes stuffed in our closet that we just don’t wear - still hoping that someday we can fit into them again! Here are a few tips for sharing a more organized closet space with your spouse: Your Side vs. Their Side Sharing a closet is nearly impossible when a couple’s clothes are mixed together. It’s confusing and definitely frustrating as you struggle to find things, so separate your items. And yes, some women need more space for their clothing and accessories. Tall boots, ankle-high boots, longer dresses, and purses all need dedicated space. A double set of drawers can create a visual “dividing line” that clearly indicates who has what space. These drawers can be centered if you are sharing the closet fifty-fifty or offset if one of you needs additional wall space for hanging items. Avoid the Back-and-Forth Routine Having drawers in your closet for socks, underwear, jewelry, etc. means you won’t

spouse if he/she gets up later in the morning. New houses now have larger master closets to accommodate space for drawers. Use Vertical Storage Space If you have high ceilings in your house, it’s important to take advantage of vertical storage. Even small closets designed with tall cabinets will provide big storage options. The top shelf in older homes is often just over seven feet, but today’s new homes have ceilings that are nine feet or higher. Stay on Your Side of the Closet Respecting one another’s space and belongings is key to maintaining shared closet harmony. Make an effort to keep your area of the closet tidy, and don’t let your collection of workout clothes or jeans overflow into your partner’s space. No matter the size of your closet or budget, call Tailored Living of Knoxville for a design that maximizes both your storage space and budget!

A set of double drawers is a must in a shared master closet.

A Christmas Perspective

I

BY CHRISTINA FITZWILLIAM, C O - O W N E R O F S U R FAC E D O C , I N C .

N 2012, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Thyroid Cancer. After a botched surgery, I was left without a voice for seven long months. I wish I could tell you I kept a great attitude, but the truth is I was desperate and depressed. In January 2013, some friends prayed over me that my voice would be restored, and that very day I received an answer. I went from a barely audible whisper to about 75% of my speaking voice. I can now talk to my family and friends and even on the phone. If I had simply woken from the surgery with a less than stellar voice, I would have been focused on the loss. But having come from nothing to 75% was an amazing gift. It gave me a new perspective, and for that I am grateful. When we began the Surface Doc company in 2008, the economy was in a recession.

Those first few months we nearly starved as we waited for the phone to ring. We had friends who brought us meals, and one of our first clients was a pizzeria who paid our company with pizza credit. I am not exaggerating to tell you that we ate pizza for a solid week – breakfast, lunch, and dinner! The kids loved that week, but I couldn’t eat pizza for years after that. I’ll admit, I did do a bit of whining before my perspective was forced to shift to gratitude. We ended up coming through that season feeling loved and cared for by family and friends… and we know God sent us that pizza! Christmas is a season where we are particularly mindful of our blessings. As I reminisce over the last decade or so, it is obvious that the seasons of real personal growth (and faith!) have taken place during

particularly difficult experiences. I am reminded that the Lord CAN change any situation we find ourselves in. But, when the situation doesn’t change to our liking, we have an opportunity for growth and to realign our perspective with His. Our desire this season is to do a better job recognizing the Lord’s movement here in the middle – before the promise is fulfilled, before the promotion comes through, before the kids are on the path we desire for them. The middle is a difficult place for most of us, but I want to encourage you… that wherever you may find yourself, God’s grace is sufficient to carry you. And me. It is our heartfelt prayer that each of us feels the love of our Savior Jesus Christ and His blessings that surround us. Merry Christmas from Surface Doc.

10 years!

Why I'm Grateful for 2020 This time of year I always like to sit down and count my blessings, and this year is no exception. I can easily say that this has been a year of new experiences for all of us. I am grateful for all of the new opportunities that these experiences have created. Collectively we have all found ways to connect with each other, and truly value our time together, even more than before. We realize just how important our friends and family are, and how precious those moments together can be. We have rediscovered hobbies, be it cooking, art, gardening, writing, and more. As well as found new ways to keep entertained all while at home. As a business, we have found new ways to help our clients digitally, reassuring them through our customer service and our open communication. Likewise, I am grateful for all of the support our clients have given us this year. Home is where the heart is, and I think 2020 has helped all of us appreciate, just a little bit more, the comforts of home. - Sandy

cypress, Taxodium Distichum is a deciduous conifer native to the southeastern United States. Pyramidal in shape, bald cypress grow to be a towering 70 feet tall with a spread that measures up to 50 feet. These trees love wet sites and require full sun to thrive. Often growing at water’s edge, bald cypress are known for their knees - projections that grow out of the ground around the base - making them a very interesting plant to add to your landscape. One of the best features of T. distichum is its foliage. Soft, needle-like leaves emerge in spring. In East Tennessee, this foliage then turns a gorgeous bronze in the fall that creates stunning autumnal colored mats in the garden after leaves fall from the tree. With more than one tree, the fallen leaves will result in several inches of useful leaf mulch. As winter approaches, the reddish-brown bark becomes the star. The slightly exfoliating bark, along with its deciduous nature, gives this tree its common name, bald cypress. The water-resilient wood has been traditionally used for a variety of furniture items, as well as flooring, shingles, caskets, and flower boxes. Some say these trees are living fossils,

020 WAS a year like no other, and many of you used the time you had at home to work on your landscape. Others are still working. Now that we are moving into winter, it is a good time to evaluate what you have done or what you want to do. If things didn’t quite turn out the way you wanted or if you still have plans, let us help you put the right plant in the right place. The ground seldom freezes here, so you can continue to plant right on through the winter. With that being said, I know that most of us are not going to do a lot of yard work this month. There is simply too much to do during the holidays, so I am going to do what I traditionally do and tell you how to take care of some of your holiday plants. If you have questions about others, such as Amaryllis and Cyclamen, give us a call. Christmas Cactus The Christmas cactus and its cousins are very low maintenance, but there are a few tricks to growing them: » They are tropical cactus, not desert cactus. They don’t like hot afternoon sun and do not like to get bone dry. They do like lots of light, however, and won’t bloom well if kept in too dark a spot. » The bloom cycle is triggered by cool temperatures and longer periods of darkness. Keep them away from heat sources and give them 13 hours of darkness per day. » Don’t overwater. Every couple of weeks is fine for most homes. Once the blooms have finished, let them rest for a bit by withholding water for five to six weeks. When you see new growth, it is time to resume regular watering. If the plant has been in the same pot for more than three to four years, or if it is very crowded, you will need to up-pot. Don’t worry if you accidentally break some pieces off, because they are easy to propagate. Call us if you need instructions. Cut Christmas Trees and Greenery The number one rule for cut trees is to know when the tree was cut! If you don’t cut it yourself, ask. Some of the trees that go to box stores, warehouse stores, and grocery stores were cut in October for the sake of logistics. Rule two: After you pick your tree, have the seller do a fresh cut or do it yourself when you get home. Immediately put the tree in water and do NOT let it dry out. They can drink a gallon of water a day at first, so choose a stand with sufficient capacity.

Some people will recommend various additives to help your tree stay fresh longer, but most experts say that water is fine on its own. As for wreaths and garland, they will do best if they are sprayed with an antitranspirant to prevent moisture loss or misted with water regularly. They are also happiest if they get some shade from hot afternoon sun. Poinsettias Poinsettias are considered plant divas, but it is because someone decided a tropical plant would be a great winter flower. If you want to keep them alive, follow these guidelines: » Always buy from a greenhouse or garden center. The box stores and groceries simply do not have the experience to handle a poinsettia. » Please don’t purchase a plant that is already in a plastic sleeve. This camouflages damage and creates a fungal breeding ground around the plant. The plant should be placed in a sleeve for transportation, but remove the sleeve when you get home by cutting it off or pulling it from the bottom. » Don’t expose the poinsettia to cold temperatures. Anything below 50 will

damage it. Freezing temperatures will kill it in less than a minute. Keep it away from drafts or windows and doors. » The bracts are very fragile because of the size of the blooms. This means they should be put where they will not be bumped or brushed against. » The poinsettia is not poisonous. Some people (and animals) may have a reaction to the sap, however, so keep them away from pets and children. » Water the plant when the soil feels dry. I find it easiest to take mine out of the wrap and put it in the sink to water it. After it drains, I put it back in the wrap. Don’t let water stand in the wrap, however, because the poinsettia is prone to root rot. That’s all for this month! Don’t forget to keep bird feeders and birdbaths clean and full, and stop in and see us during the winter for any garden needs! From all of us to all of you, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Make a few batches of these pecan recipes and you’ll be ready with on-the-go snacks and treats when you need something tasty to tide you over. Although beloved in pie, pecans are a versatile nut that can be used beyond the pie shell - add them to a snack mix, incorporate them into granola, or simply munch on them straight from the bag. Delicious and nutritious, 1 ounce of pecans offers 3 grams of plant-based protein and 3 grams of fiber, plus 12 grams of “good” monounsaturated fats and only 2 grams of saturated fat - perfect to power you through those long days spent getting ready for the upcoming holidays. This season, try munching on a handful of these spiced Gingerbread Pecans for a sweet and savory snack while decorating the house or wrapping presents late at night, and be sure to set out a bowl for the family to enjoy! Snack-sized versions of your favorite holiday desserts are great to have on-hand when you’re craving a quick and tasty treat. Chopped pecans add a flavorful and nutrient-dense crunch to these paleofriendly No-Bake Pumpkin Pecan Pie Bites, while pecan halves provide a festive touch to these cute Reindeer Pecan Brownies.

Prep time: 20 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Yield: 20 brownies

Ingredients: » Nonstick cooking spray » 1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, melted » 1 tablespoon pecan or canola oil » 1 cup, plus 2 tablespoons, granulated sugar » 2 large eggs » 1 teaspoon vanilla extract » 1/2 cup all-purpose flour » 1/2 cup cocoa powder » 1 teaspoon espresso powder (optional) » 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt » 20 raw pecan halves, cut in half » 40 candy eyeballs » 20 red chocolate candies » 1/4 cup chocolate chips

Directions: Preheat oven to 350º F. Spray mini muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray. In large bowl, whisk melted butter, oil, and sugar until well combined. Add eggs and vanilla extract; beat until mixture is thick and pale in color, about 1 minute. Sift in flour and cocoa powder. Add espresso powder, if desired, and salt. Using rubber spatula, fold dry ingredients into butter mixture until just combined. Batter should be thick. Using 1 tablespoon cookie scoop, transfer batter to prepared mini muffin tin. Bake 13-15 minutes until toothpick inserted in center comes out mostly clean, with some lingering crumbs. Add chocolate chips to a heat-proof bowl; microwave until smooth and melted. Pour melted chocolate into sandwich bag and cut off small portion of one corner to use as tip. Use melted chocolate to “glue” on pecan antlers, candy eyeballs, and red candy noses to brownies. Allow chocolate to set before transferring brownies to airtight container.

staples in many homes, adding to the aesthetic of virtually any space. While the visual benefits of plants are widely embraced, many people are unaware that they support mental and physical well-being, too. “Plants offer benefits beyond beauty,” explains Alfred Palomares, vice president of merchandising at 1-800-Flowers.com. “From improving air quality to having calming and healing benefits, plants are an important component for any home.” Stress Reduction Have you noticed that when you visit a garden or park, you instantly feel at ease? Greenery has the ability to calm and reduce stress. The sights and smells promote calm and a feeling of escape, which is particularly important during times of stress. Work is a top source of stress for many, so plants are a smart addition to workspaces. “The positive effects of office plants” by Nursery Papers Technical found employees had many benefits, including: » Depression/dejection reduced by 58% » Anger/hostility reduced by 44%

» Tension/anxiety reduced by 37% » Confusion reduced by 30% Because many people are now working from home and children are attending school remotely, add plants to office and study spaces to reduce stress and make them more welcoming. Plant to consider: Lavender has delicate purple buds that offer a splash of color and a scent with its calm-invoking characteristics. Improve Air Quality Plants can improve air quality by decreasing the levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by up to 89%, according to NASA Stennis Space Center. VOCs are commonly found in household items and paints and include formaldehyde, benzene, and trichlorethylene, among others. Many green houseplants can: » Reduce carbon dioxide levels » Control humidity levels » Reduce indoor pollution levels » Reduce airborne dust levels » Add oxygen to the air Plant to consider: Peace Lily can remove pollutants and absorb harmful substances like ammonia and xylene, plus it has a pleasant scent when in bloom.

Healing and Health-Promoting Plants are believed to calm and promote healing in people of all ages. Scientists believe the calming effects of nature can reduce cortisol levels and improve mood, effectively speeding up the healing process. A Journal of Alternative Complementary Medicine article found that patients recovering from surgery with plants and flowers in their room have experienced: » Lower blood pressure and heart rate » Lower ratings of pain, anxiety and fatigue » Fewer intakes of pain medication Whether you’re recovering from an illness or want to promote overall wellness, consider placing plants throughout your most-used spaces to reap the benefits. Plant to consider: Aloe Vera is an ancient natural remedy that adds visual appeal, plus the clear gel from the plant’s leaves also soothes the skin. “The power of plants is incredible,” said Palomares. “Whether you bring plants into your own home to promote calm and wellness, or you gift a loved one with a special surprise, greenery is a wonderful way to elevate a space.” Learn how plants can boost wellness at 1800flowers.com/blog/plants.

Adelia Armstrong Lutz: The Local Darling of the 1893 World’s Fair N

INETEENTH CENTURY

artists routinely entered works o f a r t i nto c o m p e t i t i o n s a n d exhibits to increase their visibility and the World’s Fair became a popular event for artists to do this. World’s Fairs, also called Expositions, are large-scale industrial and cultural exhibitions in which several nations participate. The Great Exhibition of Products of Industry of All Nations, held in London in 1851, is recognized as the first true World’s Fair, and it was succeeded by an international exhibition held every few years in a major international city. The first World’s Fair held in the U.S. was the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The second World’s Fair held in the U.S. was the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition commemorated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the New World in 1492. The fair was an influential cultural and social event that had a profound effect on architecture, fine arts, industry, and the American self-image. Artists from the United States and 19 foreign countries exhibited at the Exposition. Hundreds of painters submitted works, and more than 1,000 paintings in oil, and more than 200 in watercolor, were selected for competition and exhibited in the Palace of Fine Arts with additional works, not in competition for medals, were exhibited in other exposition buildings and individual state buildings. Adelia Armstrong Lutz was a Knoxville artist active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was one of the artists that entered her works of art into competitions and exhibits. During her lifetime, she exhibited throughout America, including the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Lutz exhibited two paintings, a still life and portrait. The Knoxville Journal and Tribune announced the achievement on May 21, 1893: “The many friends and sincere admirers of Mrs. Adelia A. Lutz were gratified to read the announcement that two of her pictures had been accepted for exhibition at the World’s Fair. Mrs. Lutz is a charming and talented woman who has worked quietly and faithfully in her chosen art, producing works which have commanded the attention and appreciation of all who have seen them. Mrs. Lutz is a prolific worker, and her charming suburban home, ‘Westwood,’ is graced with many striking and artistic productions of the brush. Sincere congratulations are in order 38

for this gifted painter for her triumph in the world of art.” During the summer and fall of 1893, Lutz, with her friends and family, frequently traveled to Chicago to attend the fair and view her paintings, as well as the others, on exhibition. She was then invited by the woman’s literary club, Ossoli Circle, to write a paper about the foreign art on exhibit at the fair and present it at their meeting on November 6, 1893. Lutz opened her presentation by cautioning the reader to “be modest and cautious in the pronouncing of positive opinions on the subject of art; for every one of us has a particular source of enjoyment.” She continued by describing her philosophy on art: “We all know that ideas of beauty are among the noblest which can be presented to the human mind, invariably exalting and purifying it and that all art shines to express beauty in some form – whether of surface or of soul. Painting, with all its technicalities, difficulties, and particular ends, is a noble and expressive language, invaluable as the vehicle of thought. Art is something accomplished. It is the birth of a new joy into the world. Art teaches you the philosophy of life – it shows you that there is no perfection. There is light and there is also shadow.” “We plead for the introduction of art to an ever increasing extant into our homes, not merely because it is lovely, but because it is possible to all and it is work that is faithful, strong, enduring, and honorable - work that is powerful in its influence. If we only look for it, we are surrounded by the beautiful always. Cherish it; love it. Take it into your hearts and it will be your very life.” Adelia Armstrong Lutz continued to enter works of art into competitions and exhibits until her death in 1931. She exhibited works at the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta, the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition in Nashville, the

Adelia 1888

1910 and 1911 Appalachian Exposition in Knoxville, and the 1913 National Conservation Exposition in Knoxville. But by far, Adelia’s greatest accomplishment was her participation in the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition. The Knoxville Journal and Tribune announced it best on May 21, 1893: “Sincere congratulations are in order for this gifted painter for her triumph in the world of art.” Want to learn more about Lutz and her studio? EXILE’S J.P. PENNINGTON REFLECTS ON 42 YEARS OF KISSING PEOPLE ALL OVER BY RANDY PAT TERSON,BOOMEROCIT Y.COM

A

NY BABY boomer who listened to the radio for even just a little bit in the ’70s has, undoubtedly, heard the song “Kiss You All Over” by the band Exile. If you’ve heard it once, you’ve surely heard the popular song a thousand times. It may come as a complete surprise to you (as it did to Boomerocity) that this year marks the 42nd anniversary of “Kiss You All Over” hitting number one on the music charts - where it remained for four weeks. It was the number five song of 1978, and Billboard Magazine ranks it as ninth in their 50 Sexiest Songs list. Currently, the song has amassed more than 15.7 million Spotify streams and is included in more than 75,000 playlists. The year 2020 also celebrates the 57th anniversary for the band, which formed in Richmond, Kentucky, in 1963. Having had number one hits on both the pop and country charts, Exile is far from a “one hit wonder.” They have achieved 10 number one hits on the country chart, three Gold albums, and more than eight million records sold. As Kentucky Music Hall of Fame members, Exile continues to tour performing their greatest hits and fan-favorite on-the-road songs. Boomerocity reached out to founding Exile member, J.P. Pennington, via a Zoom video call to his Kentucky home to discuss the 42nd anniversary of “Kiss You All Over,” as well as what J.P. and the band have been working on during the tour lull due to the pandemic. I began our conversation by commenting on the fact that, despite the song’s age, it still has “legs” and sounds as though it was written and recorded yesterday. Pennington responded by saying “Well, thank you! You know, the song has a good beat, a good feel to it. It’s a very simple song as far as the feel of it goes - that’s part of the reason it has held up over the years. Of course, lyrically, when you’re singing ‘I Want To Kiss You All Over,’ it resonates with people. That song, when it first came out, caused a lot of trouble - especially in radio. “We had so many people who came out against it at the time - like radio program directors, some of them quitting their jobs because their bosses told them to play the song. Even though the information going around was actually negative, it started making that song sell like hotcakes! “Jesse Jackson came out against it on the national nightly news. He commented that it was people like us causing the degradation of American society. And man, after that, the song - it just took off. But

40

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2020

compared to now, the song is really pretty innocent.
“I mean, it says, ‘I want to kiss you all over,’ and, literally, that would mean you want to kiss someone all over. But in essence, it was really written as a double entendre, meaning ‘I want to kiss you again. I want to kiss you all over.’” J.P. clarifies, “That was kind of our ‘out,’ you know? We think our fans like to make of it what they will, which is fine with us! We’re extremely pleased and thankful to be one of the lucky artists that have had a ‘signature song’ in our careers - one of those songs that stays around through the years, from generation to generation.” “Kiss You All Over” has recently been included on the soundtrack for the major motion picture The Big Ugly, starring Vinnie Jones, Ron Perlman, and Malcolm McDowell. It has also been included in 32 other productions, including Happy G i l m o r e , M a n O n t h e M o o n , Z o o k e e p e r, W i l d H o g s , Employee of the Month, Hello Ladies, American Swing, and miniseries Mindhunter (Netflix), Pose (FX), Red Oaks (Amazon), and Imposters (Bravo). As 2020 has changed the landscape of fan interaction, the band has released a new face mask with the well-recognized “Kiss You All Over” lip logo to commemorate the song’s anniversary and to keep fans safe. “We’d love to ‘Kiss You All Over,’ but in the interest of keeping everyone healthy, here’s our solution to keep us all safe and Covid free!” shares Exile’s band members. The mask can be ordered from their website, www.Exile.biz. Watch the fascinating video of our entire conversation at www.boomerocity.com. In it, J.P. shares about upcoming Exile albums (yes, more than one!), as well as future tour plans with none other than the legendary country group, Alabama. Randy’s first interview was at the tender age of 13 with none other than Col. Tom Parker. Thirty-six years later he founded the webzine, Boomerocity.com, and has conducted close to 200 interviews with some of the most interesting people in music.

Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Wraps Families in the Light of the Season

W

ITH CHRISTMAS approaching

and the calendar set to turn from 2020 to 2021, Dollywood’s Smoky Mountain Christmas, now through January 3, is poised to wrap guests in the warm light of timeless family traditions, new memories, and joyous time spent together. Thanks in part to the glow of more than five million gleaming Christmas lights and a dazzling new holiday fireworks show, guests can bask in the memories of yesterday while embracing the hope of tomorrow. Dollywood immediately envelopes guests in the illumination of millions of holiday lights, which create a festive Christmas atmosphere that has become a cherished family tradition for generations. While the lighting itself remains familiar to guests, brand new area-based themes and lighting designs throughout the park provide a sense of wonder and discovery around each turn. Guests will find themselves strolling through a literal winter wonderland, as more live lighted Christmas trees will adorn the park than during any Christmas festival before. “Christmas is so precious because of the time we take to gather with friends and family to share the light of love and hope with each other,” said Dolly Parton. “It’s so good to be able to laugh about old memories and traditions and even start a few new ones. “Some Christmases are more memorable than others, and I think this year is certainly one we won’t forget. I want families to feel the warmth and comfort of all the great things they remember about Dollywood at Christmas, with a few new experiences that will become the memories they share years from now. In 20 years, when someone says, ‘Do you remember 2020?,’ of course they’ll think about how strange this year has been, but I also hope they’ll stop and say, ‘Yes, but remember that special time we had at Dollywood during Christmas that year?’” Just one of the new experiences guests can

enjoy this season is an end-of-the-evening event that will add a little sparkle to the “Dolly-days” this year. A Christmas fireworks display called Merry & Bright! celebrates the season with a colorful and energetic show featuring a number of contemporary holiday songs that will add a little cheer for guests. Performance dates will be available on www. dollywood.com and the Dollywood app. The spotlight also shines brightly on the park’s award-winning entertainment this season. Christmas in the Smokies - a heartwarming tradition that families have enjoyed for 30 years - returns indoors to center stage at DP’s Celebrity Theater. A new show, called Heart of the Holidays, features several members of Dolly’s family and includes a mix of some of her holiday favorites alongside songs from her new Christmas album, A Holly Dolly Christmas. Another returning guest favorite, Christmas with the Kingdom Heirs, can be found at the Pines Theater. Heartfelt entertainment abounds during the festival, including O’ Holy Night, Appalachian Christmas with the Smoky Mountain String Band, Holiday Wild Roots, The Mistletones, and the Candlelight Carolers, a new choral group who can be found performing on the steps of the Robert F. New Year’s Resolutions for You and Your Small Business B Y TO M I R M E N

TH E

O R I G I N S of New Year’s resolutions, which were primarily religious in nature, date back to the ancient Babylonians. Today almost 40% of all Americans are estimated to make resolutions annually, despite the fact that their failure rate is a whopping 88%. The failure rate of New Year’s resolutions is based on the failure to achieve a stated goal – for instance, losing 25 pounds. But the real success, I believe, results from acknowledging a needed area of self-improvement. Execution of your plan to achieve your desired results can be refined through trial and error over time. So don’t give up on identifying areas of self-improvement just because you’ve come up short in the area of execution. Here are sure ways to succeed: » Identify areas requiring self-improvement. » Implement a common sense approach to achieving your goals. » Make yourself accountable to a trusted friend.

... consider supercharging your potential for success by becoming accountable for your resolutions to a trusted friend, mentor, or co-worker Want to stretch yourself just a bit further in 2021? How about combining your personal resolutions with those of your small business? Just like yourself, your small business most likely can benefit from resolutions focusing on its financial health, well-being, and its relationships with customers. Ask yourself

these questions for starters: » Are you managing your small business or is it managing you? Identify possible areas for healthy future growth, and invest time implementing a well-thought out plan for success. Try delegating routine tasks to co-workers to free up the needed time. » Can your customers and prospective new clients differentiate you from your competitors? Don’t expect great success in a generic marketplace. Identify those areas where you can successfully differentiate your small business and then implement a marketing strategy to educate existing and future new customers. Like personal resolutions, success with business resolutions begins when you identify areas of improvement and then implement an achievable plan for succeeding. But consider supercharging your potential for success by becoming accountable for your resolutions to a trusted friend, mentor, or co-worker. Happy New Year!

EVERYTHING KNOXVILLE December 2020

W E M O V E toward 2021, I encourage you to make time this season to unplug, engage with family and friends, and allow yourself to step back from the busyness to enjoy the holidays (whatever shape that may take this year!). This can also be a great time to evaluate how you and your business (or your role within your profession) present yourself in the marketplace – whether online, via social media, or in print. We frequently hear about “branding consistency” and its importance. So… what is it, why is it important, and are you doing it? For example, if your truck is yellow, your business card green, your street sign pink – all appearing inconsistent and disconnected – then it may be time to update your marketing materials, website, and company gear. Logo, fonts, color palette, tag lines, and overall look and feel are just one part of your story, but it makes a big impact in conveying consistency, professionalism, stability, and TRUST! According to experts in the field, one of the primary goals of recognized branding is to gain customer trust. In order for customers to trust you, they must feel like they “know” you,

and to know you, they have to be aware of your business’ community presence. To recognize and remember you, a consistent message and image (how you are recognized and perceived) are needed in a manner that reinforces your expertise, capabilities, stability, and character. Simple, right? Think of why you choose certain brands or packaging at the grocery store. It may not be apparent, but there is a reason – as this awareness and recognition is often processed subconsciously. Perhaps you grew up with this brand in your home, the label may have appeal, or you have seen hundreds of advertisements that have made an impression. The first step is simple – if a potential customer, who doesn’t know your business, were to see your website, business card, vehicle, apparel, FB page, and any other promotional or marketing material, would they recognize it’s the same business? Evaluate how your business is presenting itself, and ask others for feedback. If you find yourself in the “needs work” category, there are local resources available to help, professionally and affordably, that will enable you to put your best self forward as we begin 2021.

Surgeons, facial contouring continues to be the most desired aesthetic procedure for those seeking to achieve more defined facial characteristics and a youthful appearance. Evoke by Inmode is the first and only non-invasive, hands-free facial remodeling device. The painless Evoke procedure sculpts the face without surgery, anesthesia, or downtime. Evoke’s non-invasive technology is an industry first. Similar to body sculpting, this procedure delivers a structural reorganization of facial and submental tissue with radiofrequency energy, causing a thermal reaction that tightens skin, reduces fat, and creates a contoured appearance of the jowls, cheeks, jawline, and chin. Evoke was created and based on the development and clinical success of the proprietary A.C.E. (Acquire, Control, and Extend) technology. A.C.E. technology targets deep within the skin to ensure that no areas are under- or over-treated, thereby maximizing results and providing consistent outcomes. Evoke treatments are very comfortable. Patients can relax,

read a book, or watch TV in the Evolution Lounge while Evoke does all the work defining facial features to restore a more youthful appearance. Patients will feel a warm sensation very similar to a facial or heated stone massage. Evoke treatments are customized to each patient and can be used on every skin type and skin tone. There is absolutely no recovery period or downtime associated with Evoke. It is a quick and painless treatment that can be done during the lunch hour, allowing patients to return to normal activities immediately. Most patients will begin to see gradual improvements in the treatment area following their first few Evoke sessions. Southeastern Dermatology is proud to be the premier provider of Evoke in the Knoxville area. Dr. Doppelt and his staff will create a customized treatment plan that will determine the frequency, duration, and number of sessions at your complimentary consultation.
